  1. Good morning. The reading today is from John chapter 21, verses 1 to 14.

    John 21:1–14

  2. ! If you're using a church Bible, that's page 1090.

  3. ! It's John chapter 21, verses 1 to 14.

    John 21:1–14

  4. Afterwards, Jesus appeared again to his disciples by the Sea of Galilee.

  5. It happened this way. Simon Peter, Thomas, also known as Didymus,

  6. Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.

  7. I'm going out to fish, Simon Peter told them, and they said, we'll go with you.

  8. So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

  9. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

  10. He called out to them, friends, haven't you any fish? No, they answered.

  11. He said, throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.

  12. When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

  13. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, it is the Lord.

  14. As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, it is the Lord, he wrapped his outer garment around him,

  15. for he had taken it off and jumped into the water.

  16. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish,

  17. for they were not far from shore, about a hundred meters.

  18. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it and some bread.

  19. Jesus said to them, bring some of the fish you have just caught.

  20. So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore.

  21. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many, the net was not torn.

  22. Jesus said to them, come and have breakfast.

  23. None of the disciples dared ask him, who are you?

  24. They knew it was the Lord.

  25. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them and did the same with the fish.

  26. This is now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

  27. Thank you, Christopher.

  28. Let's pray and ask for God's help as we study this passage together.

  29. Our Lord Jesus, we thank you for yet another opportunity to gaze at your glory.

  30. Holy Spirit, we pray you'd open our eyes to see Jesus now.

  31. Amen.

  32. I wonder what's the first thing that comes to your mind whenever I read this sentence.

  33. I can't come to Jesus today because...

  34. Fill in the blank.

  35. Even as people who are united to Christ in faith,

  36. I was just wondering,

  37. why do we so often hang back from Jesus in our day-to-day experience?

  38. We keep our distance.

  39. We withdraw from him.

  40. Why is that?

  41. I think it's primarily because of the shame and guilt that we feel from our sin.

  42. We wrongly assume Jesus needs a bit of space whenever we've wronged him yet again.

  43. We wrongly assume that we should keep our distance until his disappointment in us has worn off.

  44. What's your reason for often hanging back from Jesus?

  45. Because what we're going to find in this text is that no such reasons exist.

  46. To Jesus, there is no single reason why he would turn away any person who truly comes to him for mercy and for refuge.

  47. We're the ones who make up false reasons why Jesus wouldn't want us or accept us.

  48. And our problem is we're not really seeing his glory.

  49. That is the beauty and radiance of his character.

  50. We're just seeing a watered-down version of Jesus.

  51. Jesus, John says in the first verse of this text, he says afterwards, Jesus again appeared to his disciples by the Sea of Galilee.

  52. And John started off his gospel account back in chapter 1 and verse 14.

  53. He said this,

  54. In this last chapter, John gives us one more window into the glory of the Son.

  55. God the Son.

  56. That we also would see and believe and have life in his name.

  57. And John shows us not only Jesus' glory, but what's interesting in this text, he shows us Peter's response.

  58. An ordinary person, Peter's response to seeing Jesus' glory.

  59. So that's where we're going today.

  60. So first of all, we're going to look at three examples of Jesus' glory in this text.

  61. The first one, see the glory of Jesus' power.

  62. John tells us that seven of the disciples are together on this occasion.

  63. And verse 2 says this,

  64. I'm going out to fish, Simon Peter told them.

  65. And they said, we'll go with you.

  66. So they went out and got into the boat.

  67. But that night, they caught nothing.

  68. Now, you don't need to be a fisherman to know that is frustrating.

  69. In fact, we've all had some experience of going to work.

  70. Nothing went to plan that day.

  71. It felt like we came home empty-handed.

  72. But as for these guys, it was a loss of income for them as well.

  73. Verse 4.

  74. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore.

  75. But the disciples did not realize it was Jesus.

  76. He called out to them,

  77. Friends, haven't you any fish?

  78. No, they answered.

  79. He said, throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.

  80. And when they did,

  81. they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

  82. See the glory of Jesus' power.

  83. The one who created and sustains the universe commands the fish in the Sea of Galilee to swim right into the disciples' net.

  84. Nothing is beyond his power.

  85. Now, you might say, that's well and good for the disciples.

  86. They saw this amazing miracle right in front of their eyes.

  87. We have just as much evidence of Jesus' power.

  88. Who set the earth spinning at a precise tilt of 23.4 degrees in its orbit around the sun,

  89. at a precise distance from the sun, not too close, not too far, perfectly calibrated,

  90. so we could live out our days here.

  91. Think about last night.

  92. Who kept your heart pumping blood at a rate of 5 litres per minute?

  93. That's 2,500 litres pumped while you slept,

  94. sustaining over 30 trillion cells in your body.

  95. Who started it?

  96. Who sustains it?

  97. We just went to sleep.

  98. Do you see the glory of Jesus' power around you?

  99. Do you pause to wonder and praise?

  100. How blind we often are to the glory of his power.

  101. Notice also how he uses his power to provide for his people.

  102. Read verse 11.

  103. Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore.

  104. This guy's a Hulk, by the way.

  105. Did you know how strong Simon Peter was?

  106. There you go.

  107. The net was full of large fish.

  108. 153.

  109. But even with so many, the net was not torn.

  110. Now, this was not just an average catch of average-sized fish.

  111. It was 153 whoppers.

  112. It's like Jesus is saying to all of us,

  113. I'm able to do immeasurably more than all you could ask or imagine,

  114. and I love to use my power to provide for my people.

  115. Read the Gospels.

  116. That is his heart.

  117. Take comfort in that.

  118. He wants to provide for us.

  119. If Jesus cares about his disciples having a good return

  120. from their shift at work and a hot breakfast,

  121. ready for them when they're tired and hungry,

  122. he also cares about the little things in our lives as well.

  123. And he calls us to ask of him,

  124. to ask of his father,

  125. knowing that if he doesn't give us what we have asked for,

  126. it's not that our father isn't able to provide.

  127. It's because he has something better for us.

  128. So do you and I really believe

  129. that he desires to use his power to provide for us personally?

  130. That he cares about the specific things in our little lives

  131. that no one else even knows about?

  132. Do you ask him to provide or just keep him separate?

  133. Ask of him and see the glory of his power.

  134. Secondly, I think we can see the glory of Jesus' humility in this.

  135. John, he also saw a vision of Jesus

  136. in the brilliant glory of his future judgment and all evil.

  137. It's not in our text today, but I just want to show you it

  138. just for a moment because I think it's good context.

  139. These verses come from Revelation 19.

  140. It says this,

  141. I saw heaven standing open

  142. and there before me was a white horse

  143. whose rider is called Faithful and True.

  144. This is Jesus.

  145. With justice, he judges and wages war.

  146. His eyes are like blazing fire

  147. and on his head are many crowns.

  148. Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword

  149. with which to strike down the nations.

  150. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.

  151. On his robe and on his thigh,

  152. he has this name written,

  153. King of Kings

  154. and Lord of Lords.

  155. This is Jesus.

  156. He has all power and authority.

  157. He has the last say.

  158. Let's not forget that

  159. as we read these words now

  160. from verse 9 in our passage

  161. and see the glory of his humility.

  162. Verse 9,

  163. When they landed,

  164. the disciples saw a fire of burning coals

  165. there with fish in it

  166. and some bread.

  167. Jesus said to them,

  168. Bring some of the fish you have just caught.

  169. Again,

  170. verse 12,

  171. He said to them,

  172. Come and have breakfast.

  173. None of the disciples dared ask him,

  174. Who are you?

  175. They knew it was the Lord.

  176. Jesus came,

  177. took the bread

  178. and gave it to them

  179. and did the same

  180. with the fish.

  181. I think we can just see the disciples

  182. standing there,

  183. stunned.

  184. The King of Kings

  185. and Lord of Lords

  186. is cooking them breakfast

  187. on a beach.

  188. No doubt they were thinking,

  189. It's we should be serving him breakfast.

  190. But the one who has all power

  191. and authority

  192. stoops down low

  193. to serve them first.

  194. What humility.

  195. You see,

  196. those who have power

  197. and authority

  198. in our world

  199. expect to be served.

  200. We can all think

  201. of many examples.

  202. They expect to be served

  203. on a silver plate.

  204. But Jesus,

  205. being in very nature God,

  206. did not consider

  207. equality with God

  208. something to be grasped.

  209. Rather,

  210. he made himself nothing.

  211. By taking the very nature

  212. of a servant,

  213. being made

  214. in human likeness

  215. and being found

  216. in appearance

  217. as a man,

  218. what did he do?

  219. He humbled himself

  220. by becoming

  221. obedient

  222. to death.

  223. Even death

  224. on a cross.

  225. He went that low

  226. to lift us up.

  227. Do you look

  228. at the glory

  229. of his power

  230. and think,

  231. oh,

  232. he wouldn't really care

  233. about my situation.

  234. He wouldn't,

  235. oh,

  236. he's too great

  237. and glorious

  238. to ever come down

  239. to where I'm at.

  240. No.

  241. That's not Jesus.

  242. This is what Isaiah

  243. said of him.

  244. A bruised reed

  245. he will not break

  246. and a smoldering wick

  247. he will not snuff out.

  248. Though he is high

  249. and lifted up,

  250. he lowers himself

  251. to us.

  252. Can you see

  253. the glory

  254. of Jesus'

  255. humility?

  256. Thank you.

  257. Thirdly,

  258. see the glory

  259. of his grace.

  260. Of all the things

  261. the disciples

  262. expected Jesus

  263. to say,

  264. come and have

  265. breakfast

  266. was definitely

  267. the last

  268. on the list.

  269. I mean,

  270. think about it.

  271. They had abandoned

  272. him

  273. in his darkest hour

  274. the night

  275. before his death.

  276. But Jesus

  277. demonstrates

  278. the glory

  279. of his grace

  280. in inviting

  281. them

  282. to breakfast.

  283. And Jesus

  284. shows us

  285. the glory

  286. of his grace

  287. by inviting us

  288. in our

  289. brokenness,

  290. our mess,

  291. our repeated

  292. failings

  293. to come

  294. to him

  295. again

  296. and again

  297. and again.

  298. Grace

  299. is when you're

  300. given something

  301. so wonderful

  302. you never

  303. deserved.

  304. The glory

  305. of Jesus'

  306. grace

  307. is his

  308. welcome

  309. to bankrupt

  310. sinners

  311. to share

  312. in his riches.

  313. he welcomes

  314. the empty-handed

  315. with nothing

  316. to offer him

  317. but their mess

  318. and failings.

  319. And he calls

  320. them friends.

  321. And as he

  322. hands out

  323. the bread

  324. to each

  325. of those

  326. disciples

  327. around that

  328. little charcoal

  329. fire,

  330. they have

  331. this visible

  332. reminder.

  333. My body

  334. broken for you.

  335. My body

  336. broken

  337. for you.

  338. Their sin

  339. has been

  340. paid for

  341. on the cross.

  342. Jesus took

  343. the judgment

  344. they deserved.

  345. And now he

  346. gives them

  347. his

  348. relationship

  349. with the

  350. father,

  351. the status

  352. of sons

  353. and daughters

  354. to one's

  355. enemies.

  356. This

  357. is the

  358. glory

  359. of his

  360. grace

  361. to every

  362. one of us

  363. who would

  364. come

  365. empty-handed

  366. to him.

  367. Do you

  368. see the

  369. glory

  370. of Jesus'

  371. grace

  372. this morning?

  373. So that's

  374. the glory

  375. of Jesus

  376. that we

  377. see in

  378. this passage.

  379. His

  380. power,

  381. his

  382. humility,

  383. his

  384. grace.

  385. But what

  386. happens

  387. when we

  388. really see

  389. his glory?

  390. Like,

  391. truly see

  392. it?

  393. Well,

  394. Peter's

  395. response

  396. tells us.

  397. Now,

  398. the funny

  399. thing is,

  400. for these

  401. disciples,

  402. this event

  403. was all a

  404. bit of

  405. deja vu.

  406. I want

  407. you to

  408. keep your

  409. finger

  410. in John.

  411. Turn back

  412. with me

  413. one book

  414. to Luke

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  415. chapter 5.

  416. Matthew,

  417. Mark,

  418. Luke,

    Luke 5:1

  419. chapter 5,

  420. verse 1.

  421. That's on

  422. page 1032

  423. if you're

  424. using the

  425. church

  426. Bible.

  427. And this

  428. was the

  429. first day

  430. that Luke

  431. records

  432. Jesus

  433. ever

  434. meeting

  435. his

  436. disciples.

  437. day

  438. one

  439. and such.

  440. And I

  441. want you

  442. to note

  443. the

  444. similarities

  445. between

  446. this

  447. event

  448. and the

  449. one

  450. that we

  451. just

  452. read

  453. in

  454. John 21.

  455. This

  456. is very

  457. interesting.

  458. So,

  459. verse 1,

  460. Luke chapter 5.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  461. One day,

  462. as Jesus

  463. was standing

  464. by the

  465. lake of

  466. Gennesaret,

  467. that is,

  468. Sea of

  469. Galilee,

  470. same place,

  471. the people

  472. were crowding

  473. around him

  474. and listening

  475. to the

  476. word of

  477. God.

  478. he saw

  479. at the

  480. water's

  481. edge

  482. two

  483. boats

  484. left

  485. there

  486. by

  487. fishermen

  488. who

  489. were

  490. washing

  491. their

  492. nets.

  493. He

  494. got

  495. into

  496. one

  497. of

  498. the

  499. boats,

  500. the

  501. one

  502. belonging

  503. to

  504. Simon,

  505. Simon

  506. Peter,

  507. and asked

  508. him to

  509. put out

  510. a little

  511. from shore.

  512. Then he

  513. sat down

  514. and taught

  515. the people

  516. from the

  517. boat.

  518. When he

  519. had finished

  520. speaking,

  521. he said

  522. to Simon,

  523. put out

  524. into deep

  525. water

  526. and let

  527. down

  528. the nets

  529. for a

  530. catch.

  531. Simon

  532. answered,

  533. Master,

  534. we've

  535. worked hard

  536. all night

  537. and haven't

  538. caught

  539. anything.

  540. But because

  541. you say

  542. so,

  543. I will

  544. let down

  545. the nets.

  546. And when

  547. they had

  548. done so,

  549. they caught

  550. such a

  551. large number

  552. of fish

  553. that their

  554. nets

  555. began to

  556. break.

  557. So they

  558. signaled

  559. for their

  560. partners in

  561. the other

  562. boat to

  563. come and

  564. help them.

  565. And they

  566. came and

  567. filled both

  568. boats so

  569. full that

  570. they began

  571. to sink.

  572. And listen

  573. to this,

  574. verse 8.

  575. When Simon

  576. Peter saw

  577. this,

  578. he fell

  579. at Jesus'

  580. knees and

  581. said,

  582. Go away

  583. from me,

  584. Lord.

  585. I am a

  586. sinful man.

  587. Peter

  588. sees the

  589. dazzling

  590. glory of

  591. Jesus'

  592. power and

  593. holiness for

  594. the first

  595. time,

  596. and he

  597. is petrified

  598. of it.

  599. because he

  600. knows the

  601. blackness of

  602. his sin.

  603. That's the

  604. reason why.

  605. He said,

  606. I am a

  607. sinful man.

  608. What's

  609. interesting is

  610. Isaiah had

  611. exactly the

  612. same response

  613. when he

  614. saw Jesus

  615. in all his

  616. glory.

  617. He said,

  618. Woe is

  619. me,

  620. for I am

  621. ruined,

  622. for I am a

  623. man of

  624. unclean lips.

  625. my eyes

  626. have seen

  627. the king,

  628. the lord

  629. of hosts.

  630. See,

  631. when we

  632. see God

  633. in his

  634. dazzling

  635. holiness

  636. and purity

  637. and power,

  638. the ugly

  639. darkness of

  640. our sin

  641. is laid

  642. bare.

  643. We can

  644. begin to

  645. fool ourselves

  646. that our

  647. sin isn't

  648. all that

  649. bad.

  650. You know,

  651. I'm okay,

  652. I'm not

  653. as bad

  654. as,

  655. you know,

  656. that person

  657. over there

  658. or that

  659. person I

  660. read about

  661. on the

  662. news.

  663. No,

  664. when we

  665. really see

  666. the holiness

  667. and power

  668. of God,

  669. we are

  670. left on

  671. our faces

  672. in terror

  673. at our

  674. sin and

  675. where that

  676. leaves us

  677. with a

  678. holy God.

  679. We instantly

  680. realize we

  681. have defiled

  682. God's good

  683. creation.

  684. we have

  685. rebelled

  686. against

  687. his

  688. good

  689. rule.

  690. You see,

  691. Peter and

  692. Isaiah,

  693. their responses

  694. are natural.

  695. They wish

  696. the ground

  697. to swallow

  698. them up

  699. because they

  700. know their

  701. sin condemns

  702. !

  703. And that's

  704. where our

  705. sin must

  706. actually bring

  707. all of us

  708. as well.

  709. We need to

  710. come to the

  711. place where

  712. we see God

  713. as just

  714. in condemning

  715. us for

  716. our sin.

  717. to see

  718. that we've

  719. not just

  720. fallen a

  721. little bit

  722. short of

  723. God's

  724. glory,

  725. but in

  726. so many

  727. ways we

  728. have torn

  729. up his

  730. creation,

  731. his rule

  732. book,

  733. his love,

  734. and thrown

  735. it back in

  736. his face.

  737. But God

  738. does not

  739. want us to

  740. stay in

  741. that place

  742. of horror

  743. at our

  744. own sin

  745. and condemnation.

  746. Flick back

  747. to John.

    John 21:7

  748. 21,

  749. verse 7.

  750. Because three

  751. years later,

  752. we have the

  753. same Sea

  754. of Galilee,

  755. we've got

  756. the same

  757. fishing boat,

  758. we've

  759. exactly the

  760. same miracle

  761. performed,

  762. but oh

  763. so different

  764. a response

  765. to Jesus.

  766. Read with

  767. me from

  768. John 21,

    John 21:7

  769. verse 7.

  770. Then the

  771. disciple whom

  772. Jesus loved

  773. said to

  774. Peter,

  775. it is

  776. the Lord.

  777. As soon

  778. as Simon

  779. Peter heard

  780. him say,

  781. it is the

  782. Lord,

  783. he wrapped

  784. his outer

  785. garment around

  786. him,

  787. for he had

  788. taken it

  789. off,

  790. and jumped

  791. into the

  792. water.

  793. The other

  794. disciples

  795. followed in

  796. the boat,

  797. towing the

  798. net full of

  799. fish,

  800. for they

  801. were not

  802. far from

  803. shore,

  804. about a

  805. hundred

  806. yards.

  807. See,

  808. the first

  809. time this

  810. miracle

  811. happens,

  812. Peter begs

  813. Jesus to

  814. get away

  815. from him.

  816. The second

  817. time,

  818. Peter can't

  819. get to

  820. Jesus fast

  821. enough.

  822. What has

  823. changed?

  824. What drives

  825. this fisherman

  826. to abandon

  827. his catch

  828. and throw

  829. himself into

  830. the sea

  831. and swim

  832. freestyle,

  833. about 90

  834. meters,

  835. to the shore?

  836. 46 seconds,

  837. by the way,

  838. is the

  839. Olympic record

  840. set in

  841. Paris,

  842. back in

  843. 24.

  844. I think

  845. Peter came

  846. close.

  847. I don't

  848. know about

  849. you.

  850. Here's my

  851. guess as to

  852. what changed

  853. for Peter.

  854. The first

  855. time around,

  856. Peter only

  857. saw the

  858. glory of

  859. Jesus'

  860. power and

  861. holiness,

  862. and it

  863. condemned

  864. him.

  865. Now,

  866. three years

  867. later,

  868. he's also

  869. seen the

  870. glory of

  871. Jesus'

  872. grace and

  873. his humility,

  874. which is

  875. freedom from

  876. his condemnation.

  877. Before,

  878. he cried,

  879. away from

  880. me,

  881. Lord,

  882. I'm a

  883. sinner.

  884. Now,

  885. he knows

  886. he's a

  887. sinner more

  888. than ever.

  889. But he's

  890. thrashing

  891. through the

  892. waves to

  893. get to

  894. Jesus.

  895. Before,

  896. his awareness

  897. of sin kept

  898. him away

  899. from Jesus.

  900. Now,

  901. it propels

  902. him towards

  903. his Savior.

  904. He sees

  905. the glory

  906. of Jesus'

  907. grace and

  908. humility.

  909. Peter knows

  910. Jesus has

  911. paid for

  912. every one

  913. of his

  914. failings,

  915. so he

  916. doesn't have

  917. to hide.

  918. Peter knows

  919. Jesus came

  920. to save

  921. those who

  922. freely admit

  923. their sin.

  924. He can run

  925. to Jesus,

  926. not hide

  927. from him.

  928. for everyone

  929. whose faith

  930. is wholly

  931. placed in

  932. Christ's

  933. death and

  934. resurrection,

  935. we can say

  936. it is

  937. finished.

  938. There is

  939. no condemnation.

  940. There is

  941. nothing left

  942. to pay.

  943. Our guilt

  944. is gone.

  945. The sin

  946. atoned for.

  947. There are

  948. no reasons

  949. left to

  950. stay away

  951. from Jesus

  952. now.

  953. No

  954. reasons

  955. left.

  956. The tragedy

  957. is we keep

  958. coming up

  959. with reasons

  960. as to why

  961. we need

  962. to stay

  963. away.

  964. We start

  965. hanging back

  966. from Jesus.

  967. Now,

  968. if there was

  969. anyone in

  970. this situation

  971. who had a

  972. reason to

  973. hang back

  974. from Jesus,

  975. you'd have

  976. to say it

  977. was Peter,

  978. right?

  979. He's the

  980. one who

  981. failed Jesus

  982. the most

  983. in the

  984. context of

  985. these

  986. disciples.

  987. He flat

  988. out denied

  989. knowing Jesus

  990. three times,

  991. abandoned him

  992. on the night

  993. before his

  994. death.

  995. And the

  996. natural feeling

  997. is shame

  998. to hide

  999. yourself,

  1000. just like

  1001. Adam and

  1002. Eve did,

  1003. in the

  1004. garden,

  1005. after they

  1006. had sinned.

  1007. As those

  1008. united to

  1009. Christ,

  1010. how often

  1011. do we

  1012. hang back

  1013. from Jesus

  1014. in the

  1015. moment of

  1016. our sin?

  1017. We keep

  1018. our distance.

  1019. We say

  1020. things like,

  1021. oh,

  1022. I've fallen

  1023. again.

  1024. I can't

  1025. even face

  1026. him now.

  1027. I just

  1028. know he's

  1029. so disappointed

  1030. in me.

  1031. We say

  1032. things like

  1033. that.

  1034. And instead

  1035. of moving

  1036. toward him,

  1037. we avoid

  1038. him.

  1039. We busy

  1040. ourselves.

  1041. We doom

  1042. scroll.

  1043. We watch

  1044. the next

  1045. episode.

  1046. Here's a

  1047. quote from

  1048. Dane

  1049. Northland.

  1050. He says

  1051. this,

  1052. perhaps

  1053. Satan's

  1054. greatest

  1055. victory in

  1056. your life

  1057. today is

  1058. not the

  1059. sin in

  1060. which you

  1061. regularly

  1062. indulge,

  1063. but the

  1064. dark

  1065. thoughts of

  1066. God's

  1067. heart that

  1068. cause you

  1069. to go

  1070. there in

  1071. the first

  1072. place and

  1073. keep you

  1074. cool toward

  1075. him in

  1076. the wake

  1077. of it.

  1078. what a

  1079. tragedy

  1080. when

  1081. Christ's

  1082. bride,

  1083. his people,

  1084. whom he

  1085. has clothed

  1086. in his

  1087. righteousness,

  1088. think that

  1089. they must

  1090. withdraw from

  1091. him in

  1092. their

  1093. brokenness.

  1094. Yes,

  1095. we will

  1096. struggle with

  1097. sin, but

  1098. our sin can

  1099. never separate

  1100. us from

  1101. Christ now.

  1102. It only

  1103. draws him

  1104. to us.

  1105. To think

  1106. that Christ

  1107. would ever

  1108. be resentful

  1109. or disappointed

  1110. or angry

  1111. with his

  1112. bride is

  1113. a lie

  1114. of the

  1115. devil.

  1116. That lie

  1117. is designed

  1118. to destroy

  1119. our joy

  1120. in him.

  1121. Here's

  1122. another

  1123. quote.

  1124. As

  1125. Christ's

  1126. people,

  1127. his bride,

  1128. we are

  1129. loved with

  1130. all the

  1131. madness

  1132. in Christ's

  1133. soul.

  1134. If you

  1135. can only

  1136. see a

  1137. frowning

  1138. saviour

  1139. on the

  1140. beach

  1141. waiting for

  1142. you,

  1143. that's a

  1144. Jesus of

  1145. your

  1146. imagination.

  1147. Can you

  1148. see the

  1149. glory of

  1150. his power

  1151. and his

  1152. grace?

  1153. Can you

  1154. see your

  1155. smiling saviour

  1156. there on

  1157. the beach

  1158. with a

  1159. meal ready

  1160. to serve

  1161. you?

  1162. At the

  1163. start, I

  1164. put this

  1165. line up.

  1166. I can't

  1167. come to

  1168. Jesus today

  1169. because

  1170. whatever

  1171. reasons

  1172. you or

  1173. I put

  1174. in there,

  1175. if our

  1176. trust is

  1177. in Christ,

  1178. we can

  1179. rip them

  1180. up.

  1181. We can

  1182. throw them

  1183. away.

  1184. we can

  1185. burn them

  1186. in the

  1187. fire of

  1188. Christ's

  1189. unquenchable

  1190. love for

  1191. us, his

  1192. bride.

  1193. The more

  1194. we see

  1195. of the

  1196. glory of

  1197. his power

  1198. and grace,

  1199. the more

  1200. we are

  1201. drawn to

  1202. him, like

  1203. Peter was,

  1204. in his

  1205. beauty.

  1206. The more

  1207. we depend

  1208. on him

  1209. for our

  1210. daily bread,

  1211. the more

  1212. we long

  1213. to hear

  1214. his words

  1215. spoken to

  1216. us, the

  1217. more satisfied

  1218. we are in

  1219. his love,

  1220. the more

  1221. we are

  1222. filled with

  1223. joy in

  1224. his presence.

  1225. Come and

  1226. have breakfast,

  1227. Jesus says

  1228. to each

  1229. one of us.

  1230. There are

  1231. no reasons

  1232. left to

  1233. stay away.

  1234. Now,

  1235. maybe you're

  1236. thinking this

  1237. morning,

  1238. Sam, I

  1239. just

  1240. struggle to

  1241. see the

  1242. glory of

  1243. Christ in

  1244. all its

  1245. fullness.

  1246. And so

  1247. often we

  1248. see like a

  1249. lopsided

  1250. version of

  1251. Jesus, we

  1252. see maybe a

  1253. lot of the

  1254. glory of

  1255. his power,

  1256. but not

  1257. much of the

  1258. glory of

  1259. his grace.

  1260. Or it

  1261. could be the

  1262. other way

  1263. around.

  1264. And whichever

  1265. way, it

  1266. causes us in

  1267. different ways

  1268. to draw back

  1269. from Jesus

  1270. and not

  1271. to come

  1272. to him.

  1273. In all of

  1274. this, we

  1275. have a

  1276. helper, the

  1277. Spirit of

  1278. Christ, who

  1279. dwells in

  1280. all those who

  1281. are united

  1282. with him.

  1283. And the

  1284. Spirit's job

  1285. is to help us

  1286. to see Christ

  1287. in all of his

  1288. glory.

  1289. So we can

  1290. pray, we can

  1291. ask the

  1292. Spirit to help

  1293. us see Christ

  1294. in all his

  1295. glory.

  1296. Pray for the

  1297. Spirit to open

  1298. your eyes to

  1299. see him more

  1300. clearly in his

  1301. word, in the

  1302. world around

  1303. you.

  1304. Pray this for

  1305. your family, for

  1306. your friends, for

  1307. your neighbors.

  1308. Pray that they

  1309. will be drawn

  1310. irresistibly to

  1311. Jesus, satisfied

  1312. in him.

  1313. And I also

  1314. want to say, if

  1315. you're somebody

  1316. sitting here

  1317. today, and

  1318. in your heart

  1319. you know that

  1320. you've never

  1321. come to

  1322. Jesus for

  1323. mercy and

  1324. refuge,

  1325. don't wait

  1326. another day.

  1327. He invites

  1328. you to

  1329. come and

  1330. receive from

  1331. him forgiveness,

  1332. grace,

  1333. everything you

  1334. need.

  1335. Come to

  1336. him while he

  1337. may be found.

  1338. Paul asks this

  1339. question in

  1340. Romans chapter

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  1341. 2.

  1342. He says, do

  1343. you show

  1344. contempt for

  1345. the riches of

  1346. his kindness,

  1347. forbearance,

  1348. and patience?

  1349. not realizing

  1350. that God's

  1351. kindness is

  1352. intended to

  1353. lead you to

  1354. repentance.

  1355. God is

  1356. kind and

  1357. patient with

  1358. you so that

  1359. you can turn

  1360. to him and

  1361. find forgiveness.

  1362. Either run

  1363. to him now as

  1364. your loving

  1365. savior, or

  1366. one day face

  1367. Jesus as

  1368. your righteous

  1369. judge.

  1370. Jesus is

  1371. calling out

  1372. to you now

  1373. to turn from

  1374. your sin,

  1375. trust in his

  1376. work for you

  1377. on the cross.

  1378. You don't have

  1379. to have everything

  1380. figured out.

  1381. You don't need

  1382. to understand all

  1383. the ways he works

  1384. in this world.

  1385. You don't have

  1386. to have a certain

  1387. amount of Bible

  1388. knowledge.

  1389. know.

  1390. All you need

  1391. to know is

  1392. you are a

  1393. sinner in

  1394. desperate need

  1395. of his

  1396. mercy,

  1397. and that he

  1398. would give it

  1399. to you if

  1400. you would

  1401. come to

  1402. him.

  1403. So come to

  1404. him while he

  1405. may be found.

  1406. Blessed is

  1407. the one who

  1408. takes refuge

  1409. in him.

  1410. May we

  1411. all be

  1412. those who

  1413. see the

  1414. glory of

  1415. Jesus and

  1416. run to the

  1417. refuge like

  1418. Peter again

  1419. and again.

  1420. Let's pray.

  1421. Amen.

  1422. We thank

  1423. you,

  1424. Father,

  1425. for showing

  1426. us your

  1427. brilliant glory

  1428. in your

  1429. son,

  1430. Jesus.

  1431. Thank you

  1432. for giving

  1433. us this

  1434. text that

  1435. we might

  1436. see his

  1437. glory in

  1438. its fullness.

  1439. Lord

  1440. Jesus,

  1441. we thank

  1442. you for

  1443. humbling

  1444. yourself and

  1445. dying on a

  1446. cross for

  1447. our wickedness.

  1448. Thank you

  1449. for destroying

  1450. every possible

  1451. reason to

  1452. keep us

  1453. from you.

  1454. Holy Spirit,

  1455. give us

  1456. new eyes to

  1457. see the

  1458. glory of

  1459. Christ's

  1460. power,

  1461. humility,

  1462. grace,

  1463. everything

  1464. else.

  1465. That we

  1466. would not

  1467. hang back

  1468. in shame,

  1469. but run

  1470. to him

  1471. for mercy

  1472. and refuge.

  1473. Amen.
