  1. Good morning everyone, nice to see you today.

  2. And please turn in your Bibles to John's Gospel, chapter 13.

  3. John's Gospel, chapter 13.

  4. So if you've been with us over the last little while, you'll know that we were looking at

  5. the resurrection of Jesus Christ and those who had encountered the risen Jesus and the

  6. difference Jesus had made.

  7. And now we're going to jump back into the middle of John's Gospel.

  8. Chapters 13 to chapter 17 are really about 24 hours in the life of Jesus.

  9. Chapters 1 to 12 is about three years, but chapters 13 to 17 is really about 24 hours just before

  10. Jesus is arrested and crucified.

  11. Jesus spends time with his disciples, teaching them and preparing them for his departure.

  12. So over the next few weeks, we're going to be looking at that section, chapters 13 to 17,

  13. as Jesus prepares the disciples and teaches us through his word what it means to follow him.

  14. So we're going to read from verse 1 of chapter 13 to verse 17.

  15. Let us hear God's word.

  16. It was just before the Passover festival.

  17. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father.

  18. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

  19. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God.

  20. So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, wrapped a towel around his waist.

  21. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

  22. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him,

  23. Lord, are you going to wash my feet?

  24. Jesus replied,

  25. You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.

  26. No, said Peter, you shall never wash my feet.

  27. Jesus answered,

  28. Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.

  29. Then, Lord, Simon Peter replied,

  30. Not just my feet, but my hands and my head as well.

  31. Jesus answered,

  32. Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet.

  33. Their whole body is clean,

  34. and you are clean,

  35. though not every one of you.

  36. For he knew who was going to betray him,

  37. and that was why he said,

  38. Not everyone was clean.

  39. When he had finished washing their feet,

  40. he put on his clothes and returned to his place.

  41. Do you understand what I have done for you?

  42. He asked them.

  43. You call me teacher and Lord,

  44. and rightly so,

  45. for that is what I am.

  46. Now that I, your Lord and teacher,

  47. have washed your feet,

  48. you should wash one another's feet.

  49. I have set you an example

  50. that you should do as I have done for you.

  51. Very truly I tell you,

  52. no servant is greater than his master,

  53. nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

  54. Now that you know these things,

  55. you will be blessed if you do them.

  56. Well, let's pray as we ask for God's help.

  57. Again, Father,

  58. we say thank you for this word that we have read.

  59. A word written years ago,

  60. preserved and kept for us today,

  61. that we might learn what it is

  62. to be followers of the Lord Jesus,

  63. the King of Kings.

  64. I pray that as we hear your word,

  65. you would change us

  66. and mold us

  67. to be servant-hearted,

  68. loving others

  69. as you loved us.

  70. May you do that work in us

  71. for our good.

  72. We pray in Jesus' name.

  73. Amen.

  74. Amen.

  75. Have you washed your hands?

  76. I can still hear my mother say it.

  77. It was a very simple rule

  78. that we had in our house.

  79. Before sitting down for dinner,

  80. you had to wash your hands.

  81. The problem was,

  82. my mother's standard of cleanliness

  83. was a lot different to mine.

  84. Sticking your hands under a running tap

  85. for less than a second

  86. was not enough.

  87. I would be sent back to the bathroom,

  88. use soap and water,

  89. and dry your hands.

  90. Now having dirty hands

  91. not only meant no dinner,

  92. it also meant

  93. I couldn't sit at the table

  94. with my family.

  95. My hands needed to be cleaned first.

  96. Well in our text,

  97. Jesus is washing,

  98. not his hands,

  99. but he's cleaning

  100. his disciples' feet.

  101. But this isn't just

  102. a physical washing

  103. that is taking place.

  104. It's a much deeper

  105. and greater washing

  106. that we all need.

  107. You might have picked it up

  108. as we read.

  109. Look at the end of verse 8.

  110. Jesus said,

  111. unless I wash you,

  112. you have no part

  113. with me.

  114. You see,

  115. when we are washed

  116. by Jesus,

  117. we can enter

  118. into the full fellowship

  119. of God

  120. as Jesus

  121. cleans us

  122. so we can enjoy

  123. that relationship

  124. with the Father

  125. and the Son.

  126. So how can we be

  127. made clean today

  128. and what difference

  129. will that washing

  130. make to our life?

  131. well first

  132. notice

  133. that this washing

  134. is an act

  135. of love.

  136. Do you see it there

  137. at the end of verse 1?

  138. Having loved

  139. his own

  140. who were in the world,

  141. he loved them

  142. to the end.

  143. Jesus loved

  144. his disciples.

  145. He had spent

  146. the last three years

  147. with them.

  148. He cared for them

  149. deeply,

  150. but now he would

  151. show them

  152. just how much

  153. he loved them.

  154. He would love

  155. them to the

  156. end.

  157. A young man

  158. might declare

  159. his love

  160. for a woman,

  161. but to show

  162. the extent

  163. of his love,

  164. he goes and buys

  165. an engagement ring.

  166. We could say

  167. he loves her

  168. to the end.

  169. A husband

  170. may love

  171. his wife,

  172. but to show

  173. the depth

  174. of his love,

  175. he cares

  176. for her

  177. all the way

  178. through her

  179. illness.

  180. We could say

  181. he loved her

  182. to the end.

  183. Well Jesus

  184. is saying

  185. to us

  186. and to his

  187. disciples,

  188. I love you.

  189. And to demonstrate

  190. the extent

  191. of that love,

  192. to reveal

  193. the depth

  194. of that love.

  195. End of verse 1,

  196. he loved them

  197. to the end.

  198. As we will see

  199. in just a moment,

  200. Jesus showed

  201. his love

  202. for us

  203. by becoming

  204. a servant

  205. to wash us

  206. clean

  207. and to give us

  208. an example

  209. to follow.

  210. He showed us

  211. his love

  212. by becoming

  213. a servant

  214. servant,

  215. to wash us

  216. clean

  217. so that we

  218. might become

  219. servants

  220. to one another.

  221. He loved us

  222. to the very

  223. end.

  224. So let's

  225. together

  226. unpack

  227. this act

  228. of love.

  229. First,

  230. Jesus loves

  231. us

  232. by becoming

  233. a servant.

  234. He loves

  235. us

  236. by becoming

  237. a servant.

  238. Look at

  239. verse 4

  240. with me.

  241. So this is

  242. during the

  243. meal.

  244. Jesus got

  245. up from

  246. the meal,

  247. took off

  248. his outer

  249. clothing

  250. and wrapped

  251. a towel

  252. around his

  253. waist.

  254. After that,

  255. he poured

  256. water into

  257. a basin

  258. and began

  259. to wash

  260. his disciples'

  261. feet,

  262. drying them

  263. with the towel

  264. that was

  265. wrapped around

  266. him.

  267. Now the

  268. scene here

  269. is both

  270. shocking

  271. and

  272. embarrassing.

  273. In our

  274. culture,

  275. as I'm

  276. sure it is

  277. when you

  278. go home,

  279. we'll sit

  280. round a

  281. table

  282. to eat.

  283. Well in

  284. ancient

  285. cultures,

  286. people would

  287. eat by

  288. lying on

  289. the floor.

  290. So if you

  291. could imagine

  292. in your

  293. house where

  294. you have

  295. your dining

  296. table or

  297. where you

  298. eat,

  299. instead there

  300. is a

  301. great big

  302. carpet in

  303. the middle

  304. of it

  305. with food

  306. and dishes.

  307. And then

  308. each person

  309. would lie

  310. with their

  311. head towards

  312. the rug,

  313. in towards

  314. where the

  315. food was,

  316. with their

  317. feet pointing

  318. away from

  319. the rug.

  320. It was a

  321. perfect way

  322. to eat,

  323. relax and

  324. chat with

  325. your head

  326. on your

  327. arm,

  328. leaning in,

  329. eating away

  330. and how

  331. are you

  332. doing,

  333. how was

  334. the day

  335. and so

  336. on and

  337. so forth.

  338. But let's

  339. remember,

  340. people didn't

  341. wear socks

  342. or shoes

  343. either.

  344. they wore

  345. sandals.

  346. That meant

  347. your feet

  348. got sweaty

  349. and dirty

  350. in a very

  351. hot climate.

  352. Bits of

  353. sheep and

  354. goats'

  355. poo got

  356. stuck between

  357. your toes.

  358. They were

  359. smelly and

  360. dirty feet.

  361. So when

  362. you took up

  363. your place

  364. for dinner

  365. around the

  366. rug and

  367. to eat

  368. the food,

  369. the servant

  370. of the

  371. house would

  372. come around

  373. and wash

  374. everybody's

  375. feet.

  376. We don't

  377. want bad

  378. smells at

  379. the dinner

  380. table or

  381. dinner rug.

  382. Well,

  383. just as

  384. Jesus was

  385. about to

  386. wash his

  387. feet,

  388. wash the

  389. disciples'

  390. feet,

  391. you could

  392. imagine what

  393. the disciples

  394. must have

  395. thought.

  396. This is a

  397. servant's

  398. job.

  399. This is

  400. reserved for

  401. the lowest

  402. of the low.

  403. it must

  404. have been

  405. that there

  406. was no

  407. servant in

  408. attendance

  409. that day

  410. because,

  411. well,

  412. the disciples

  413. couldn't be

  414. bothered to

  415. wash each

  416. other's

  417. feet.

  418. But here

  419. Jesus does.

  420. Jesus gets

  421. himself ready,

  422. pours the

  423. bowl of

  424. water,

  425. and began

  426. to wash

  427. their feet.

  428. But the

  429. real shock

  430. comes when

  431. we realise

  432. who Jesus

  433. is.

  434. Look back

  435. in verse

  436. three.

  437. Jesus knew

  438. that the

  439. father had

  440. put all

  441. things under

  442. his power

  443. and that he

  444. had come

  445. from God

  446. and was

  447. returning to

  448. God.

  449. John is

  450. telling us

  451. that this

  452. is not

  453. just a

  454. mere human

  455. being.

  456. This is

  457. God in

  458. the flesh

  459. with absolute

  460. power over

  461. all things.

  462. The power

  463. that created

  464. the universe

  465. and sustains

  466. and provides

  467. all things.

  468. That power

  469. was with

  470. Jesus.

  471. He's telling

  472. us God

  473. is present

  474. with Jesus.

  475. Now with

  476. that in

  477. mind,

  478. how would

  479. you finish

  480. verse

  481. three?

  482. Let's read

  483. verse three

  484. again.

  485. Jesus knew

  486. that the

  487. father had

  488. put all

  489. things under

  490. his power

  491. and that

  492. he had

  493. come from

  494. God

  495. and was

  496. returning

  497. to God.

  498. So he

  499. demanded

  500. that he be

  501. treated with

  502. honour and

  503. respect.

  504. So he

  505. ensured that

  506. he was

  507. served

  508. first.

  509. No.

  510. Verse

  511. four.

  512. He got

  513. up from

  514. the meal,

  515. took off

  516. his outer

  517. clothing,

  518. and wrapped

  519. a towel

  520. around his

  521. waist and

  522. began to

  523. wash feet.

  524. Do you

  525. see what's

  526. going on

  527. here?

  528. God in

  529. the person

  530. of Jesus

  531. began to

  532. wash dirty,

  533. pooey,

  534. smelly feet.

  535. feet.

  536. Imagine our

  537. president,

  538. Catherine

  539. Connolly,

  540. hosting a

  541. banquet for

  542. distinguished

  543. guests.

  544. Just before

  545. the food is

  546. served, the

  547. president runs

  548. into the

  549. kitchen, puts

  550. on an apron

  551. and a nice

  552. pair of

  553. yellow

  554. marigold

  555. gloves, and

  556. begins to

  557. serve food

  558. and wash

  559. up and

  560. come out

  561. with other

  562. food, sweating

  563. in her

  564. forehead and

  565. placing food

  566. before them.

  567. It'd be

  568. shocking.

  569. Imagine the

  570. headlines around

  571. the world.

  572. Presidents

  573. are served.

  574. They don't

  575. do the

  576. serving.

  577. Well, as we

  578. peer into

  579. this room, as

  580. we see this

  581. meal taking

  582. place, as

  583. we see

  584. Jesus, we

  585. see God,

  586. the creator

  587. of the

  588. universe, from

  589. all time, from

  590. beginning to

  591. end, Lord

  592. of all,

  593. washing dirty,

  594. smelly feet.

  595. Is that

  596. your God?

  597. We see

  598. Jesus

  599. saying, I

  600. have come to

  601. serve you,

  602. not to

  603. demand of

  604. you.

  605. I have

  606. come to

  607. give to

  608. you, and

  609. not to

  610. crush you.

  611. In fact,

  612. Jesus came

  613. to wash

  614. us, and

  615. clean us.

  616. so Jesus

  617. loves us by

  618. becoming a

  619. servant, and

  620. second, Jesus

  621. loves us by

  622. washing us

  623. clean.

  624. Let's pick up

  625. the conversation

  626. in verse

  627. six.

  628. he came to

  629. Simon Peter,

  630. who said to

  631. him, Lord,

  632. are you

  633. going to

  634. wash my

  635. feet?

  636. Servants

  637. do that.

  638. You can't

  639. do that.

  640. Verse

  641. seven,

  642. Jesus

  643. replied, you

  644. do not

  645. realize now

  646. what I am

  647. doing, but

  648. later you

  649. will

  650. understand.

  651. No, said

  652. Peter, you

  653. shall never

  654. wash my

  655. feet.

  656. Jesus

  657. answered, unless

  658. I wash

  659. you, you

  660. have no

  661. part with

  662. me.

  663. You see,

  664. clearly there

  665. is something

  666. else going

  667. on.

  668. It's not

  669. just about

  670. the physical

  671. washing of

  672. feet.

  673. This is a

  674. sign of a

  675. deeper and

  676. greater

  677. cleaning that

  678. must take

  679. place.

  680. So what

  681. does this

  682. foot washing

  683. signify?

  684. What does

  685. it all

  686. mean?

  687. Well, the

  688. prophets spoke

  689. about it.

  690. To help

  691. us, let's

  692. go back to

  693. Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  694. chapter 36.

  695. Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  696. chapter 36.

  697. So keep

  698. your finger

  699. in John

  700. 13 and

  701. go back

  702. to Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  703. chapter 36.

  704. If somebody

  705. has a page

  706. number, that

  707. would help.

  708. 8, 6, 7.

  709. No?

  710. Okay.

  711. Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  712. chapter 36

  713. and we'll

  714. be looking

  715. at verse

  716. 24.

  717. Now, just

  718. some context

  719. here.

  720. God's people

  721. had been warned

  722. that if they

  723. continued to

  724. turn away

  725. from God,

  726. they would

  727. be taken

  728. into exile.

  729. And this

  730. physical

  731. separation,

  732. this exile

  733. from the

  734. land,

  735. mirrored

  736. their spiritual

  737. separation

  738. from God.

  739. and into

  740. this context,

  741. the prophet

  742. Ezekiel

  743. comes to

  744. speak of

  745. God's

  746. promise

  747. of renewal.

  748. Now, look

  749. carefully

  750. and listen

  751. carefully to

  752. the language

  753. that Ezekiel

  754. uses.

  755. Pick it up

  756. in verse

  757. 24.

  758. God says,

  759. For I will

  760. take you

  761. out of the

  762. nations

  763. and I will

  764. gather you

  765. from all

  766. the countries

  767. and bring

  768. you back

  769. into your

  770. own land.

  771. So the

  772. physical

  773. separation

  774. is now

  775. being

  776. reconciled

  777. as they

  778. come back

  779. to God.

  780. Verse 25,

  781. I will

  782. sprinkle

  783. clean water

  784. on you

  785. and you

  786. will be

  787. clean

  788. and I

  789. will cleanse

  790. you from

  791. all your

  792. impurities

  793. and from

  794. all your

  795. idols.

  796. Verse 28,

  797. clean

  798. then you

  799. will live

  800. in the

  801. land I

  802. gave to

  803. your

  804. ancestors

  805. and you

  806. will be

  807. my

  808. people

  809. and I

  810. will be

  811. your

  812. God.

  813. I will

  814. save you

  815. from all

  816. your

  817. uncleanness.

  818. You see,

  819. this idolatry

  820. that needs

  821. cleaned

  822. is all

  823. about us

  824. replacing

  825. God

  826. with

  827. something

  828. else

  829. or

  830. someone

  831. else.

  832. You see,

  833. we live

  834. as if

  835. we're

  836. God.

  837. We act

  838. as if

  839. we're

  840. the one

  841. with

  842. absolute

  843. power.

  844. My

  845. life,

  846. my

  847. choice,

  848. no one

  849. is going

  850. to tell

  851. me

  852. what to

  853. do.

  854. But all

  855. that does

  856. is separate

  857. us

  858. from

  859. God.

  860. We've

  861. become

  862. unclean,

  863. we've

  864. become

  865. dirty,

  866. and the

  867. only way

  868. that we

  869. can be

  870. brought

  871. back

  872. into

  873. fellowship

  874. with

  875. God

  876. is if

  877. we are

  878. cleansed.

  879. which is

  880. exactly

  881. what God

  882. promises

  883. us to

  884. do.

  885. Look at

  886. Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36:33

  887. 36

  888. verse

  889. 33.

  890. This is

  891. what the

  892. sovereign

  893. Lord

  894. says,

  895. on the

  896. day I

  897. cleanse

  898. you

  899. from

  900. all

  901. your

  902. sins.

  903. So

  904. here is

  905. a

  906. promised

  907. washing

  908. that's

  909. going to

  910. restore

  911. and

  912. renew,

  913. a

  914. cleansing

  915. that's

  916. going to

  917. bring

  918. about

  919. a new

  920. life,

  921. a new

  922. beginning

  923. and a

  924. fresh

  925. start.

  926. But how

  927. will this

  928. promised

  929. cleansing

  930. actually

  931. take

  932. place?

  933. Well,

  934. let's

  935. go back

  936. to

  937. John

    John 13 chapter mention

  938. chapter

  939. 13.

  940. You see,

  941. as Jesus

  942. is there

  943. with the

  944. bowl of

  945. water

  946. washing

  947. the

  948. disciples'

  949. feet,

  950. Jesus

  951. in a

  952. sense

  953. was

  954. saying,

  955. I

  956. am

  957. the

  958. one

  959. who

  960. was

  961. promised

  962. !

  963. And I

  964. am the

  965. one

  966. who's

  967. come

  968. to

  969. sprinkle

  970. clean

  971. water

  972. on

  973. you.

  974. I

  975. have

  976. come

  977. to

  978. cleanse

  979. you

  980. internally,

  981. to

  982. rid

  983. you

  984. of

  985. your

  986. impurity,

  987. of your

  988. idolatry.

  989. But how

  990. would Jesus

  991. actually

  992. clean us?

  993. Does he

  994. get out a

  995. bowl of

  996. soap and

  997. water and

  998. say,

  999. that's it,

  1000. you're

  1001. cleaned?

  1002. No,

  1003. Jesus

  1004. will

  1005. clean

  1006. us

  1007. by

  1008. his

  1009. death.

  1010. Look at

  1011. chapter

  1012. 13,

  1013. verse 1.

  1014. Jesus

  1015. knew

  1016. that the

  1017. hour had

  1018. come for

  1019. him to

  1020. leave this

  1021. world and

  1022. go to

  1023. the

  1024. Father.

  1025. Jesus

  1026. here is

  1027. talking about

  1028. his

  1029. death.

  1030. In

  1031. just a

  1032. few

  1033. hours'

  1034. time,

  1035. he would

  1036. be hung

  1037. on a

  1038. cross.

  1039. The

  1040. hour,

  1041. the

  1042. time of

  1043. his

  1044. death

  1045. and the

  1046. cross

  1047. is

  1048. about

  1049. to

  1050. happen.

  1051. Having

  1052. loved

  1053. his

  1054. own

  1055. who

  1056. were

  1057. in

  1058. the

  1059. world,

  1060. he

  1061. loved

  1062. them

  1063. to

  1064. the

  1065. end.

  1066. He loved

  1067. them to

  1068. the

  1069. fullest.

  1070. He loved

  1071. them by

  1072. going to

  1073. the cross

  1074. and dying

  1075. for them.

  1076. As

  1077. Jesus

  1078. would say,

  1079. greater

  1080. love has

  1081. no one

  1082. than this,

  1083. to lay

  1084. down one's

  1085. life for

  1086. one's

  1087. friends.

  1088. You see,

  1089. we're to

  1090. make a

  1091. connection

  1092. here.

  1093. The

  1094. external

  1095. washing

  1096. of the

  1097. disciples'

  1098. feet by

  1099. Jesus

  1100. is a

  1101. sign of

  1102. the

  1103. internal

  1104. washing

  1105. Jesus

  1106. achieved

  1107. through

  1108. his

  1109. death.

  1110. In

  1111. other

  1112. words,

  1113. we are

  1114. made

  1115. clean

  1116. by the

  1117. self-sacrificing

  1118. death of

  1119. Jesus

  1120. on the

  1121. cross.

  1122. As a

  1123. servant,

  1124. Jesus

  1125. enters into

  1126. the world

  1127. to take

  1128. our

  1129. place,

  1130. to die

  1131. for you

  1132. and for

  1133. me,

  1134. taking my

  1135. sin on

  1136. himself,

  1137. my

  1138. impurity,

  1139. my

  1140. uncleanness,

  1141. and making

  1142. it all

  1143. his own,

  1144. and in

  1145. its place

  1146. giving us

  1147. his purity,

  1148. his

  1149. cleanliness.

  1150. By his

  1151. death,

  1152. he washes

  1153. us

  1154. clean.

  1155. You see,

  1156. this is a

  1157. wonderful

  1158. picture,

  1159. because all

  1160. of us have

  1161. done things

  1162. that have

  1163. made us

  1164. unclean.

  1165. We have

  1166. lived lives

  1167. that have

  1168. left us

  1169. dirty,

  1170. and no

  1171. matter how

  1172. much we

  1173. try,

  1174. we cannot

  1175. remove that

  1176. stain of

  1177. that night

  1178. that went

  1179. too far,

  1180. that conversation

  1181. that ended

  1182. in a triad

  1183. of abuse,

  1184. that episode

  1185. in my

  1186. life that

  1187. spun out

  1188. of control.

  1189. Sometimes,

  1190. we actually

  1191. take a

  1192. physical

  1193. shower or

  1194. a bath

  1195. in an

  1196. attempt to

  1197. somehow

  1198. scrub away

  1199. guilt and

  1200. shame.

  1201. Have you

  1202. ever done

  1203. that?

  1204. Or maybe

  1205. you have

  1206. that buried

  1207. so deep

  1208. within your

  1209. life that

  1210. you're afraid

  1211. to admit

  1212. it or to

  1213. say anything

  1214. because God

  1215. will despise

  1216. you and

  1217. reject you.

  1218. Well,

  1219. look again

  1220. into this

  1221. room.

  1222. See this

  1223. meal that

  1224. is taking

  1225. place.

  1226. See Jesus,

  1227. the God

  1228. man with

  1229. absolute

  1230. power,

  1231. becoming a

  1232. servant

  1233. to wash

  1234. us clean.

  1235. You see,

  1236. by turning

  1237. to Jesus,

  1238. we're not

  1239. crushed,

  1240. we're made

  1241. clean.

  1242. we're not

  1243. rejected,

  1244. we're washed.

  1245. He gave

  1246. his life

  1247. for you

  1248. and for

  1249. me,

  1250. that we

  1251. would be

  1252. welcomed

  1253. into that

  1254. pure love

  1255. of the

  1256. Father and

  1257. the Son

  1258. to enjoy

  1259. him

  1260. forever.

  1261. So,

  1262. are you

  1263. clean?

  1264. look at

  1265. verse 10

  1266. with me.

  1267. Jesus

  1268. answered,

  1269. those who

  1270. have had a

  1271. bath need

  1272. only to

  1273. wash their

  1274. feet.

  1275. Their whole

  1276. body is

  1277. clean,

  1278. and you

  1279. are clean

  1280. though not

  1281. every one

  1282. of you,

  1283. for he

  1284. knew who

  1285. was going

  1286. to betray

  1287. him,

  1288. and that

  1289. was why

  1290. he said

  1291. not

  1292. everyone

  1293. was

  1294. clean.

  1295. You see,

  1296. Jesus sees

  1297. and knows

  1298. our hearts.

  1299. He can

  1300. peer right

  1301. into my

  1302. soul now,

  1303. and he

  1304. knows what's

  1305. on your

  1306. heart right

  1307. now.

  1308. But if

  1309. we have

  1310. come in

  1311. trust to

  1312. Jesus,

  1313. we have

  1314. been made

  1315. clean,

  1316. no blemish

  1317. remains,

  1318. every sin,

  1319. past,

  1320. present,

  1321. and future,

  1322. has been

  1323. washed

  1324. away.

  1325. But maybe

  1326. you are

  1327. here and

  1328. you're

  1329. weighed

  1330. down by

  1331. your sin,

  1332. bogged

  1333. down with

  1334. guilt and

  1335. shame of

  1336. the past.

  1337. Well,

  1338. don't fear

  1339. Jesus.

  1340. Come to

  1341. him,

  1342. sit as it

  1343. were at

  1344. the table,

  1345. and let

  1346. him serve

  1347. you.

  1348. Let him

  1349. wash you,

  1350. let him

  1351. clean you,

  1352. confess

  1353. your sins

  1354. to him,

  1355. and he

  1356. will make

  1357. you pure,

  1358. so that

  1359. you too

  1360. can enjoy

  1361. the pure

  1362. love of

  1363. the Father

  1364. and the

  1365. Son.

  1366. Let him

  1367. wash you,

  1368. for that

  1369. is why

  1370. he came.

  1371. God

  1372. so Jesus

  1373. loves us

  1374. by

  1375. becoming

  1376. a

  1377. servant.

  1378. He

  1379. loves

  1380. us

  1381. by

  1382. washing

  1383. us

  1384. clean.

  1385. And

  1386. third,

  1387. Jesus

  1388. loves

  1389. us

  1390. by

  1391. leaving

  1392. an

  1393. example.

  1394. Can you

  1395. turn up the

  1396. volume just a

  1397. little?

  1398. I'm raising

  1399. my voice too

  1400. much,

  1401. competing with

  1402. the rain.

  1403. Thank you.

  1404. And there

  1405. it's dying.

  1406. Isn't that

  1407. wonderful?

  1408. verse 12.

  1409. When he had

  1410. finished washing

  1411. their feet,

  1412. he had put on

  1413. his clothes and

  1414. returned to

  1415. his place.

  1416. Do you

  1417. understand what

  1418. I have done

  1419. for you?

  1420. Jesus asked

  1421. them.

  1422. You call me

  1423. teacher?

  1424. You want to

  1425. learn from

  1426. me?

  1427. You call me

  1428. Lord?

  1429. You say you

  1430. want to obey

  1431. me?

  1432. And rightly

  1433. so, for that

  1434. is what I

  1435. am.

  1436. And now

  1437. that I

  1438. am your

  1439. Lord and

  1440. teacher,

  1441. have washed

  1442. your feet,

  1443. so you

  1444. should also

  1445. wash one

  1446. another's

  1447. feet.

  1448. I have

  1449. set you

  1450. an example

  1451. that you

  1452. should do

  1453. as I

  1454. have done

  1455. for you.

  1456. Can we

  1457. hear what

  1458. Jesus is

  1459. saying?

  1460. I have

  1461. loved you

  1462. by serving

  1463. you,

  1464. so you

  1465. must serve

  1466. one another.

  1467. So next

  1468. Sunday,

  1469. who's on

  1470. welcome?

  1471. Hands up?

  1472. Oh Mary,

  1473. Mary and

  1474. maybe somebody

  1475. else.

  1476. You must

  1477. wash people's

  1478. feet as they

  1479. come in the

  1480. door,

  1481. right?

  1482. Well, not

  1483. necessarily,

  1484. thankfully.

  1485. We don't

  1486. wear sandals

  1487. and we

  1488. don't eat

  1489. and we

  1490. eat sitting

  1491. at a table,

  1492. so it

  1493. wouldn't make

  1494. sense for us

  1495. to be washing

  1496. each other's

  1497. feet.

  1498. However, the

  1499. principle is

  1500. we are

  1501. meant to

  1502. serve one

  1503. another with

  1504. humble love.

  1505. So two

  1506. things to

  1507. consider what

  1508. it means to

  1509. follow the

  1510. example of

  1511. Jesus as

  1512. we serve

  1513. one another.

  1514. Firstly,

  1515. no one

  1516. is above

  1517. being a

  1518. servant.

  1519. None of

  1520. us here can

  1521. say,

  1522. I'm not

  1523. a servant.

  1524. If we

  1525. have been

  1526. cleaned by

  1527. Jesus,

  1528. he has

  1529. cleaned you

  1530. to bring

  1531. you into

  1532. the sphere

  1533. of serving.

  1534. Look at

  1535. verse 16.

  1536. Very

  1537. truly I

  1538. tell you,

  1539. no servant

  1540. is greater

  1541. than his

  1542. master,

  1543. nor is a

  1544. messenger

  1545. greater than

  1546. the one

  1547. who sent

  1548. him.

  1549. if Jesus

  1550. who has

  1551. been given

  1552. all power

  1553. over all

  1554. things,

  1555. if Jesus

  1556. the God

  1557. man takes

  1558. the lowest

  1559. position

  1560. possible to

  1561. serve us,

  1562. then I

  1563. am not

  1564. above the

  1565. position of

  1566. servant.

  1567. In fact,

  1568. we are all

  1569. to assume

  1570. the position

  1571. of servant.

  1572. We live

  1573. our lives

  1574. as servants.

  1575. Do you

  1576. remember how

  1577. the apostle

  1578. Paul put

  1579. it?

  1580. We had

  1581. it read

  1582. to us

  1583. at the

  1584. beginning

  1585. of our

  1586. time

  1587. together.

  1588. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1589. chapter 2.

  1590. Let me

  1591. remind you

  1592. of the

  1593. words.

  1594. Philippians

    Philippians 2:5

  1595. chapter 2

  1596. verse 5.

  1597. In your

  1598. relationships

  1599. with one

  1600. another,

  1601. have the

  1602. same

  1603. mindset

  1604. as

  1605. Christ

  1606. Jesus.

  1607. Do you

  1608. get that?

  1609. In our

  1610. relationships

  1611. with one

  1612. another,

  1613. have the

  1614. same

  1615. mindset

  1616. as

  1617. Christ

  1618. Jesus.

  1619. Well,

  1620. what was

  1621. that?

  1622. Well,

  1623. who,

  1624. being in

  1625. very nature

  1626. God,

  1627. did not

  1628. consider

  1629. equality

  1630. with God

  1631. something to

  1632. be used

  1633. to his

  1634. own

  1635. advantage,

  1636. rather he

  1637. made himself

  1638. nothing by

  1639. taking the

  1640. very nature

  1641. of a

  1642. servant

  1643. and being

  1644. made in

  1645. human

  1646. likeness

  1647. and being

  1648. found in

  1649. appearance as

  1650. a man,

  1651. he humbled

  1652. himself

  1653. by becoming

  1654. obedient to

  1655. death,

  1656. even death

  1657. on a

  1658. cross.

  1659. That is

  1660. the mindset

  1661. we are to

  1662. have.

  1663. So when we

  1664. arrive on a

  1665. Sunday morning,

  1666. come as a

  1667. servant,

  1668. come ready

  1669. to give,

  1670. come ready

  1671. humbly to

  1672. love one

  1673. another.

  1674. During the

  1675. week,

  1676. plan,

  1677. how am I

  1678. going to

  1679. serve the

  1680. church family?

  1681. As Jesus

  1682. said,

  1683. I have set

  1684. an example

  1685. that you

  1686. should do

  1687. as I have

  1688. done for

  1689. you.

  1690. You see,

  1691. if I think

  1692. I am above

  1693. the place of

  1694. servanthood,

  1695. servanthood,

  1696. it is saying

  1697. I am actually

  1698. above the

  1699. Lord Jesus

  1700. Christ.

  1701. I am better

  1702. than him.

  1703. Oh no,

  1704. we are not.

  1705. He loved

  1706. us and

  1707. washed us

  1708. and cleaned

  1709. us so

  1710. that we

  1711. can serve

  1712. one another

  1713. in love.

  1714. So no one

  1715. is above

  1716. being a

  1717. servant.

  1718. And second,

  1719. no one

  1720. is below

  1721. being

  1722. served.

  1723. No one

  1724. is below

  1725. being served.

  1726. Look at

  1727. who

  1728. Jesus

  1729. served

  1730. in this

  1731. meal.

  1732. Go back

  1733. to verse

  1734. one.

  1735. Jesus

  1736. knew

  1737. that the

  1738. hour had

  1739. come for

  1740. him to

  1741. leave this

  1742. world and

  1743. go to

  1744. the

  1745. Father.

  1746. Verse

  1747. three,

  1748. Jesus

  1749. knew

  1750. that the

  1751. Father had

  1752. put things

  1753. all under

  1754. his power.

  1755. Verse

  1756. 11,

  1757. Jesus

  1758. knew

  1759. who was

  1760. going to

  1761. betray

  1762. him and

  1763. that is

  1764. why he

  1765. said not

  1766. everyone

  1767. was clean.

  1768. Jesus

  1769. knew

  1770. all that

  1771. was going

  1772. to take

  1773. place.

  1774. This

  1775. isn't a

  1776. surprise

  1777. to Jesus.

  1778. He knows

  1779. what's

  1780. around the

  1781. corner and

  1782. Jesus knew

  1783. what Judas

  1784. was going

  1785. to do.

  1786. But that

  1787. didn't

  1788. stop Jesus

  1789. washing

  1790. Judas'

  1791. feet.

  1792. He made

  1793. no distinction

  1794. as he went

  1795. round that

  1796. group of

  1797. disciples.

  1798. He served

  1799. them all

  1800. and he

  1801. came to

  1802. Judas and

  1803. he washed

  1804. his smelly

  1805. dirty feet

  1806. too.

  1807. You see

  1808. sometimes

  1809. we can

  1810. have the

  1811. mindset that

  1812. says

  1813. oh no

  1814. I can't

  1815. serve them.

  1816. They are

  1817. so ungrateful.

  1818. Why should

  1819. I ever

  1820. serve them

  1821. after what

  1822. they did

  1823. to me?

  1824. Well

  1825. imagine if

  1826. that was

  1827. the mindset

  1828. of Jesus.

  1829. What if

  1830. he bypassed

  1831. us and

  1832. says no

  1833. I'm not

  1834. washing you

  1835. clean.

  1836. You see

  1837. not one

  1838. of us

  1839. deserves

  1840. the humble

  1841. servant

  1842. love of

  1843. Jesus

  1844. but

  1845. knowing

  1846. and seeing

  1847. my

  1848. uncleanness

  1849. knowing

  1850. exactly how

  1851. I would

  1852. behave

  1853. and how

  1854. I would

  1855. treat him

  1856. Jesus

  1857. died for

  1858. me

  1859. and washed

  1860. me

  1861. clean.

  1862. That means

  1863. I can never

  1864. look at

  1865. anyone and

  1866. say they

  1867. are below

  1868. being served.

  1869. not one

  1870. person is

  1871. below

  1872. being

  1873. served.

  1874. And if

  1875. ever I

  1876. find it a

  1877. difficulty

  1878. or if

  1879. you find

  1880. it a

  1881. difficulty

  1882. to serve

  1883. another

  1884. person

  1885. well look

  1886. again at

  1887. the cross

  1888. and look

  1889. at Jesus

  1890. who died

  1891. for you

  1892. and served

  1893. you.

  1894. I have

  1895. set an

  1896. example

  1897. that you

  1898. should do

  1899. as I

  1900. have done

  1901. for you.

  1902. So what

  1903. does this

  1904. text teach

  1905. us?

  1906. Well very

  1907. simply

  1908. Jesus

  1909. showed his

  1910. love to

  1911. us

  1912. by becoming

  1913. a servant

  1914. to wash

  1915. us clean

  1916. and to

  1917. give us

  1918. a way

  1919. that we

  1920. might serve

  1921. one another

  1922. in humble

  1923. love.

  1924. Let's just

  1925. take a

  1926. moment in

  1927. the quietness

  1928. to reflect

  1929. on what

  1930. we've just

  1931. heard.

  1932. Let us

  1933. give thanks

  1934. to the

  1935. Lord Jesus

  1936. the God

  1937. man

  1938. who came

  1939. to serve

  1940. us

  1941. and give

  1942. his life

  1943. for us.

  1944. Ask

  1945. that the

  1946. Lord would

  1947. give us

  1948. the right

  1949. mindset

  1950. every day

  1951. as we

  1952. see how

  1953. Jesus

  1954. cleaned us

  1955. that we

  1956. too may

  1957. serve

  1958. one another.

  1959. Lord Jesus

  1960. thank you

  1961. thank you

  1962. for serving

  1963. us

  1964. thank you

  1965. for assuming

  1966. and taking

  1967. on the

  1968. role of a

  1969. servant

  1970. for dying

  1971. our

  1972. death

  1973. for being

  1974. mocked

  1975. and beaten

  1976. becoming

  1977. nothing

  1978. that we

  1979. would be

  1980. washed

  1981. clean.

  1982. we thank

  1983. you for

  1984. that

  1985. and would

  1986. you please

  1987. help us

  1988. to keep

  1989. our eyes

  1990. fixed on

  1991. the Lord

  1992. Jesus

  1993. so that

  1994. we too

  1995. in turn

  1996. may humbly

  1997. serve one

  1998. another in

  1999. love

  2000. recognizing

  2001. that not

  2002. one of

  2003. us

  2004. is above

  2005. the role

  2006. of servant

  2007. and not

  2008. one of

  2009. us is

  2010. below

  2011. ever being

  2012. served.

  2013. Please

  2014. help us

  2015. this week

  2016. to serve

  2017. each other

  2018. in love.

  2019. Amen.

  2020. Well we're

  2021. going to

  2022. sing together

  2023. and I

  2024. think we

  2025. sang it

  2026. last week

  2027. but we're

  2028. going to

  2029. sing it

  2030. again

  2031. because

  2032. it captures

  2033. exactly what

  2034. the Lord

  2035. has done
