  1. So a couple of things. First, if you're using the notes this morning, you'll notice they're

  2. ! a little bit in the wrong order, but the page is numbered one, two, three, three, three, three,

  3. four. So just follow page one to four, and then you'll be able to keep up and follow along.

  4. Last week, we started into chapter 13, which is really the beginning of one whole section that

  5. ends at the end of chapter 17, covers roughly 24 hours just before the arrest and crucifixion of

  6. Jesus. And Jesus is spending time with his disciples, teaching them and preparing them for his going back

  7. to be with the Father. And today, we're going to read from chapter 13, verse 18, down to verse 30.

  8. John's Gospel, chapter 13, verse 18, down to verse 30.

  9. Jesus is speaking. I am not referring to all of you. I know those I have chosen. But this is to

  10. fulfill this passage of scripture. He who shared my bread has turned against me. I am telling you now

  11. before it happens so that when it does happen, you will believe that I am who I am. Very truly, I tell you,

  12. whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me. And whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.

  13. After he said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, very truly, I tell you, one of you

  14. is going to betray me. His disciples stared at one another at a loss to know which of them he meant.

  15. One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. Simon Peter motioned to this

  16. disciple and said, ask him which one he means. Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, Lord, who is it?

  17. Jesus answered, it is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.

  18. Then dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

  19. As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, what you are about to do,

  20. do quickly. But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. Since Judas had charge of

  21. the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival or to give

  22. something to the poor. As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out and it was night.

  23. Well, let's keep our Bibles open there at that section and we'll pray and ask for the Lord's help.

  24. Father, we are weak and we are helpless. And therefore, we come and ask that you would pour out your spirit

  25. upon each one of us, that we may focus our minds upon you and your word,

  26. and that it may change our hearts and cause us to wonder and worship

  27. at our victorious champion, Jesus Christ.

  28. Help us now, we pray. Amen.

  29. So two words can sum up what we're going to be looking at this morning. Warning and worship.

  30. Warning and worship. Warning, Satan's opposition to Jesus and his church. And worship, Jesus' defeat of

  31. Satan for the church. So first, warning, Satan's opposition to Jesus and his church.

  32. As Jesus loved and served his disciples, so the sinister forces of darkness were at work. Go back to verse 2.

  33. The evening meal was in progress. The devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.

  34. And then it gets even darker. The disciples want to know, who could it possibly be? Who would betray Jesus?

  35. Jesus. Verse 26.

  36. Jesus answered,

  37. It's the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.

  38. Then dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

  39. As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.

  40. You see, Satan is opposed to Jesus.

  41. He wants rid of Jesus.

  42. He wants the mission of Jesus to fail.

  43. And it seems to be working.

  44. Verse 30.

  45. As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out.

  46. And it was night.

  47. The dark night reflected Satan's dark schemes.

  48. And Judas' dark soul.

  49. Within a few hours, Jesus would be arrested, betrayed, beaten, mocked, crucified.

  50. The forces of darkness are real.

  51. Now there's two things that we can learn from this warning.

  52. The first one is this.

  53. The reality of Satan.

  54. The reality of Satan.

  55. Satan or the devil is not make-believe.

  56. He's not a cartoon character dressed in a red cape with two horns and a pitchfork.

  57. He's real.

  58. Jesus spoke about him in chapter 8, verse 44.

  59. Where he describes Satan as the father of lies.

  60. That when he speaks lies, he's speaking the language of lies.

  61. There's no truth in him.

  62. He is the father of lies.

  63. In chapter 12, verse 31.

  64. Satan is described as the prince of this world.

  65. Or the ruler of this world.

  66. From the beginning of time, he has sought to oppose Jesus and his church.

  67. And one of the ways he does this is by working through betrayal.

  68. We expect most of the time for opposition to come from the outside, but never from the inside.

  69. Friends don't betray friends.

  70. Well, it seems sometimes they do.

  71. Sadly, this sinister work of Satan is all too common.

  72. Almost on a weekly basis now, I hear or read about influential church leaders across the world

  73. who have betrayed Jesus and his church.

  74. It might be an affair.

  75. It could be stealing funds.

  76. It could be telling lies.

  77. It could be false teaching.

  78. But it's not just confined to leaders.

  79. It's there in the whole church.

  80. People can slander one another.

  81. Spread lies and stir up trouble.

  82. Betrayal can come in many forms.

  83. And when it does, it's devastating.

  84. It brings disorder, division and disruption.

  85. You see, Satan is not a joke.

  86. He is in opposition to Jesus.

  87. And he is in opposition to the church.

  88. So first, we learn there's the reality of Satan.

  89. But second, we can learn the responsibility of man.

  90. You see, as we read this text, we might be feeling a little bit of sympathy for Judas.

  91. It seems he didn't have a chance.

  92. Satan had prompted Judas in verse 2.

  93. And then Satan entered Judas, verse 27.

  94. We can think that, well, poor Judas didn't have a chance.

  95. The devil made me do it.

  96. Oh, no, he didn't.

  97. Judas is responsible for his actions and his choices.

  98. You see, when it says in verse 27 that Satan entered Judas,

  99. it's not like he was put into a spellbound trance or that he's under some kind of robotic control.

  100. No, the phrase means he was influenced by Satan.

  101. Through his life, one step at a time, he began to listen to the father of lies

  102. and began to follow the prince of this world.

  103. Look back with me to chapter 12, verse 4.

  104. Chapter 12, verse 4.

  105. Here we're introduced to a woman called Mary

  106. who had poured a very expensive bottle of perfume on Jesus' feet.

  107. We're told in the text that it cost a year's wage.

  108. So, well, whatever your wage is, let's say 30,000 euro on a bottle of perfume.

  109. That's a lot, isn't it?

  110. It was an act of devotion and love towards Jesus.

  111. But not everyone was happy, verse 4.

  112. But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot,

  113. who was later to betray Jesus, objected.

  114. Why wasn't this perfume sold in the money given to the poor?

  115. It was worth a year's wages.

  116. He did not say this because he cared about the poor,

  117. but because he was a thief.

  118. As a keeper of the money bag, the treasurer,

  119. he used to help himself to what was in it.

  120. Go back to chapter 13.

  121. You see, it implies that Judas had been tempted.

  122. Judas, you work so hard.

  123. And you get so little for it.

  124. Why don't you just take some cash?

  125. You deserve it.

  126. And so it can be with us.

  127. We stop listening to the word of God

  128. and we begin to listen to the lies of Satan.

  129. We engage with his prompts.

  130. We come under his influence.

  131. You see, we need to be very careful

  132. that we don't end up like a Judas.

  133. As one writer put it like this,

  134. Judas had spent three years with Jesus.

  135. Judas saw the clearest evidence.

  136. Judas heard the finest teaching.

  137. Judas followed the greatest example.

  138. But Judas still betrayed Jesus.

  139. Well, we can come to church.

  140. We can hear the word being taught.

  141. It mightn't be the finest,

  142. but it's still God's word.

  143. We can serve in ministries.

  144. But at the same time,

  145. we can ignore those sinful habits and patterns.

  146. No one else knows what they are deep inside.

  147. But you do.

  148. And I know what's in my heart.

  149. And we need to be so very careful

  150. because we have an enemy who opposes Jesus

  151. and will use people to cause division

  152. and disorder and upset.

  153. You see, we can never say,

  154. the devil made me do it.

  155. I choose to do it.

  156. So first, let's hear the warning of this message.

  157. Satan is opposed to Jesus and his church.

  158. And he will use people to bring destruction to the church.

  159. So warning.

  160. Second,

  161. worship.

  162. Jesus' defeat of Satan for the church.

  163. You see, despite Satan's opposition to Jesus,

  164. Jesus is the one who defeats Satan.

  165. You see, Jesus and Satan are not equal and opposite forces.

  166. This is not yin and yang.

  167. No, God's word is telling us that Jesus has absolute power

  168. and supreme authority over Satan

  169. and all his schemes.

  170. Again, there's two things we can learn from this.

  171. First, Jesus' sovereignty over Satan.

  172. His sovereignty over Satan.

  173. Satan's attack was not a surprise.

  174. Go back to verse 10.

  175. Jesus had been washing the disciples' feet,

  176. a sign of a deeper spiritual cleansing that he would do.

  177. Look at the middle of verse 10.

  178. And Jesus says,

  179. And you are clean,

  180. though not every one of you.

  181. For Jesus knew who was going to betray him,

  182. and that was why he said not everyone was clean.

  183. You see, it wasn't a surprise.

  184. Jesus knew.

  185. In fact, it was all part of God's bigger and wider plan.

  186. Look at verse 18.

  187. Jesus says,

  188. I am not referring to all of you,

  189. to all of those who I said were clean.

  190. I know those who I have chosen.

  191. But this is to fulfill,

  192. this betrayal is to fulfill this passage of Scripture.

  193. He who shared my bread has turned against me.

  194. Now, the quote Jesus has here from Psalm 41

  195. is a psalm from David lamenting how in his struggle

  196. people turned against him.

  197. And here's the full quote.

  198. You can read it there on the screen.

  199. Even my close friend,

  200. someone who I trusted,

  201. one who shared my bread,

  202. has turned against me.

  203. You see, Jesus is taking this psalm

  204. and he's showing us this was my experience.

  205. A close friend,

  206. someone who I trusted,

  207. someone who I shared my meals with,

  208. has turned against me.

  209. But it's not just showing us Jesus' experience.

  210. He's also showing us that what David had written

  211. a thousand years before

  212. was ultimately about Jesus

  213. and his betrayal to come.

  214. Verse 18,

  215. this is to fulfill the passage of Scripture.

  216. He who shared my bread

  217. has turned against me.

  218. You see, the betrayal is not just known by Jesus.

  219. It was all part of God's bigger and wider plan.

  220. He knew what was going to take place.

  221. He planned it.

  222. In fact, it's all under the control of Jesus.

  223. Verse 21,

  224. After he had said this,

  225. Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified,

  226. Very truly, I tell you,

  227. one of you is going to betray me.

  228. Verse 27,

  229. As soon as Judas took the bread,

  230. Satan entered into him.

  231. So Jesus told him,

  232. What you are about to do,

  233. do quickly.

  234. You see, Jesus is the one who

  235. actually sends Judas out

  236. and tells Judas,

  237. Go and do what you're meant to do.

  238. He gives him permission

  239. to carry out the betrayal.

  240. You see, Jesus uses

  241. the schemes of Satan

  242. to achieve his ultimate purpose.

  243. Satan wanted rid of Jesus.

  244. His plan was to use Jesus

  245. to have him arrested

  246. and ultimately killed.

  247. And Jesus was crucified.

  248. But it was no defeat.

  249. The death of Jesus

  250. was the defeat of Satan.

  251. Jesus shows us this

  252. if you go back to chapter 12,

  253. verse 31.

  254. Again, he knew what was going to happen.

  255. Chapter 12, verse 31.

  256. He'd been speaking about his coming death.

  257. He says,

  258. Now is the time for judgment on this world.

  259. Now the prince of this world,

  260. that is Satan,

  261. will be driven out.

  262. And when I am lifted up from the earth,

  263. will draw all people to myself.

  264. He said this

  265. to show the kind of death

  266. he was going to die.

  267. Jesus' death

  268. would secure

  269. the defeat of Satan.

  270. He would drive the prince

  271. of this world out.

  272. Jesus is sovereign

  273. over Satan

  274. and all his schemes.

  275. But there's something else we can learn.

  276. And that is

  277. Jesus' victory

  278. over Satan.

  279. Not just his sovereignty,

  280. ruling over everything,

  281. but his victory.

  282. Listen to what he says,

  283. verse 19.

  284. I am telling you now

  285. before it happens

  286. so that when it does happen,

  287. you will believe

  288. that I am

  289. who I am.

  290. He's making it clear

  291. that he's in control

  292. of all that's going to happen.

  293. Even though the disciples

  294. don't understand now,

  295. he says,

  296. when it does happen,

  297. when the betrayal

  298. does take place,

  299. when my death

  300. takes place,

  301. then you will understand.

  302. He puts it like this,

  303. verse 19.

  304. When it does happen,

  305. you will believe

  306. that I am

  307. who I am.

  308. Now,

  309. doesn't that seem

  310. a very strange way

  311. to refer to himself?

  312. I am

  313. who I am.

  314. Who are you?

  315. I am

  316. who I am.

  317. But Jesus' words

  318. are intentional.

  319. And they're full

  320. of victorious power.

  321. Keep your finger

  322. in John chapter 13

    John 13 chapter mention

  323. and go all the way

  324. back to Exodus

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  325. chapter 3.

  326. Exodus chapter 3.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  327. Here God appears

  328. to Moses

  329. from the burning bush

  330. and he speaks

  331. to Moses.

  332. And he's calling

  333. Moses to go

  334. and to save

  335. God's people

  336. who are

  337. in slavery

  338. under the cruel

  339. tyrant

  340. Pharaoh.

  341. We're going to

  342. pick it up

  343. in verse 7.

  344. The Lord said,

  345. I have indeed

  346. seen the misery

  347. of my people

  348. in Egypt.

  349. I have heard

  350. them crying out

  351. because of their

  352. slave drivers

  353. and I am concerned

  354. for their suffering.

  355. So I have come

  356. down

  357. to rescue.

  358. Verse 10.

  359. So now go,

  360. I am sending you

  361. to Pharaoh

  362. to bring my people,

  363. the Israelites,

  364. out of Egypt.

  365. Verse 13.

  366. Moses said to God,

  367. Suppose I go

  368. to the Israelites

  369. and say to them,

  370. The God

  371. of your fathers

  372. has sent me

  373. to you

  374. and they ask me,

  375. What is his name?

  376. Then what shall

  377. I tell them?

  378. God said to Moses,

  379. I am

  380. who I am.

  381. That is what

  382. you are to say

  383. to the Israelites.

  384. I am

  385. has sent me

  386. to you.

  387. Let's go back

  388. to John 13.

  389. The self-existing,

  390. self-sustaining God,

  391. the one who has

  392. no beginning

  393. and no end,

  394. the one who is

  395. eternal,

  396. I am

  397. who I am,

  398. will release

  399. and free

  400. God's people

  401. from slavery.

  402. Now Jesus

  403. comes on the scene

  404. and he declares

  405. to be,

  406. I am

  407. who I am.

  408. Jesus

  409. is the eternal,

  410. self-existing God

  411. who has come

  412. to free people

  413. from a greater

  414. slavery,

  415. slavery to sin

  416. and to death

  417. and to Satan.

  418. through my death,

  419. Jesus is saying,

  420. I will break

  421. the chains

  422. that enslave you

  423. to the prince

  424. of this world.

  425. I will drive

  426. him out

  427. and I will

  428. free all those

  429. who come to me.

  430. As Jesus

  431. said in John 8,

  432. so if the son

  433. sets you free,

  434. you will be free

  435. indeed.

  436. You see,

  437. on the cross,

  438. Jesus died

  439. for our sins.

  440. He took the judgment

  441. that we deserve.

  442. He suffered

  443. hell for us.

  444. He went into

  445. that battle

  446. and died

  447. on our place.

  448. He is the

  449. victorious

  450. champion.

  451. Here is how

  452. the Bible

  453. puts it.

  454. you can follow

  455. on the screen

  456. there.

  457. Jesus has

  458. rescued us

  459. from the

  460. dominion

  461. of darkness

  462. and brought

  463. us into

  464. the kingdom

  465. of the son

  466. he loves

  467. in whom

  468. we have

  469. redemption,

  470. the forgiveness

  471. of sins.

  472. Or here

  473. in Colossians,

  474. Jesus

  475. cancelled

  476. the charge

  477. of our

  478. indebtedness

  479. which stood

  480. against us

  481. and condemned

  482. us.

  483. He has

  484. taken it

  485. away,

  486. nailing it

  487. to the

  488. cross

  489. and having

  490. disarmed

  491. the powers

  492. and authorities

  493. that is Satan

  494. and his

  495. demons,

  496. he made

  497. a public

  498. spectacle

  499. of them

  500. triumphing

  501. over them

  502. by the

  503. cross.

  504. Or

  505. Hebrews,

  506. Jesus

  507. by his

  508. death

  509. breaks

  510. the power

  511. of him

  512. who holds

  513. the power

  514. of death,

  515. that is

  516. the devil,

  517. and frees

  518. those who

  519. all their

  520. lives

  521. were held

  522. in slavery

  523. by their

  524. fear

  525. of death.

  526. Rescued

  527. from darkness

  528. to light,

  529. cancelling

  530. the charge

  531. that stood

  532. against us,

  533. setting us

  534. free from

  535. our slavery

  536. to death,

  537. Satan,

  538. the ancient

  539. serpent,

  540. has been

  541. crushed

  542. and defeated

  543. through the

  544. death and

  545. resurrection

  546. of Jesus.

  547. Now this

  548. has massive

  549. implications

  550. for us

  551. because

  552. Jesus'

  553. victory

  554. directs

  555. and shapes

  556. the purpose

  557. of the

  558. church today.

  559. Look at

  560. verse 20,

  561. chapter 13,

  562. verse 20.

  563. Very truly

  564. I tell you,

  565. whoever

  566. accepts

  567. anyone

  568. I send

  569. accepts

  570. me,

  571. and whoever

  572. accepts me

  573. accepts the

  574. one who

  575. sent me.

  576. You see,

  577. Jesus comes

  578. as the

  579. victorious

  580. champion,

  581. and he is

  582. sending his

  583. church with

  584. a triumphant

  585. message,

  586. the good

  587. news of a

  588. decisive

  589. victory.

  590. You see,

  591. if you are a

  592. Christian today,

  593. if you are

  594. in the

  595. church,

  596. you are

  597. a true

  598. freedom

  599. fighter.

  600. Our weapons

  601. are not

  602. guns and

  603. bullets,

  604. but the

  605. gospel

  606. and prayer.

  607. As we

  608. declare

  609. Jesus,

  610. as we

  611. call people

  612. to repent

  613. of their

  614. sins and

  615. to trust

  616. Jesus,

  617. as we

  618. pray for

  619. that message

  620. to take

  621. effect,

  622. so people

  623. by God's

  624. power are

  625. setting people

  626. free to

  627. live a new

  628. way,

  629. a life

  630. not of

  631. lies and

  632. darkness,

  633. but a

  634. life full

  635. of truth

  636. and light.

  637. Jesus is

  638. the great

  639. I am who

  640. has won

  641. an eternal

  642. victory for

  643. us,

  644. and he

  645. sends us

  646. now with

  647. the power

  648. of the

  649. Holy Spirit

  650. as new

  651. people,

  652. a new

  653. creation,

  654. where we

  655. can now

  656. say no

  657. to sin

  658. and yes

  659. to Christ,

  660. and we

  661. go into

  662. a world

  663. that is

  664. opposed to

  665. him,

  666. and we

  667. bring this

  668. liberating

  669. free message

  670. of Jesus

  671. and show

  672. how people

  673. can be

  674. delivered

  675. from the

  676. prince of

  677. this world

  678. and from

  679. the father

  680. of lies.

  681. We have

  682. a glorious

  683. truth,

  684. a truth

  685. that sets

  686. people free

  687. and changes

  688. their life

  689. now and

  690. for all

  691. eternity.

  692. So what

  693. do we

  694. learn?

  695. well, I

  696. hope we

  697. hear the

  698. warning.

  699. Don't be

  700. like a

  701. Judas.

  702. Don't be

  703. sitting here

  704. today knowing

  705. what's going

  706. in your

  707. heart and

  708. never ever

  709. dealing with

  710. it.

  711. Run to

  712. the victorious

  713. king who

  714. has defeated

  715. your sin and

  716. offers forgiveness

  717. today.

  718. instead, may

  719. we all come

  720. and worship

  721. that we

  722. would bow

  723. before Jesus

  724. the great

  725. I am, our

  726. victorious

  727. champion who

  728. has secured a

  729. victory for us

  730. and sends us

  731. out with a

  732. triumphant

  733. message.

  734. worship him

  735. who has

  736. rescued us

  737. for life

  738. eternal.

  739. Let's pray

  740. together.

  741. Father, help

  742. us to

  743. take the

  744. warning of

  745. your words

  746. seriously.

  747. Help us

  748. to run to

  749. the Savior,

  750. to experience

  751. light and

  752. life.

  753. the truth

  754. and the

  755. hope of

  756. eternal life

  757. to come.

  758. Help us

  759. that we

  760. would bow

  761. in worship

  762. and live

  763. lives of

  764. worship this

  765. week as we

  766. declare the

  767. victory of

  768. Christ to

  769. those who

  770. remain enslaved

  771. in sin and

  772. death.

  773. May they

  774. come to

  775. know the

  776. hope of

  777. Christ and

  778. the glory to

  779. come.

  780. in Jesus'

  781. name.

  782. Amen.

  783. Let's

  784. stand together

  785. as we

  786. sing.

  787. Come

  788. behold
