  1. I was very surprised by a recent Bara

  2. survey that showed that 71%

  3. of Americans still believe in hell. Is

  4. that surprising to you? That was very

  5. surprising to me. 71% of Americans still

  6. believe in hell. That's really shocking

  7. because only 60% of Americans claim to

  8. believe in Jesus.

  9. I was not at all surprised though to see

  10. that less than 1% of Americans believe

  11. that they deserve to go to hell.

  12. I think the discrepancy between these

  13. two percentages of those who believe in

  14. hell and those who believe they deserve

  15. hell reveals something about us.

  16. It reveals the human desire for

  17. punishment of other evil people,

  18. just not me. I'm not evil. They're evil.

  19. punish them.

  20. There needs to be a hell for murderers

  21. and rapists and for human traffickers

  22. and for genocidal tyrants. Everyone

  23. wants them to burn,

  24. but almost no one sees themselves as

  25. worthy of hell.

  26. And I think this is because all of us

  27. just instinctively know that punishments

  28. for evil on earth are just not enough

  29. for some kinds of evil. It's not quite

  30. satisfying enough. We feel the

  31. injustice. Like for Hitler, for example,

  32. many would feel that him drinking

  33. cyanide in a bunker in Berlin in 1945

  34. was not a sufficient enough punishment

  35. for killing 6 million Jews. That's not

  36. bad enough for him. We want something

  37. more for him.

  38. or Joseph Stalin after orchestrating the

  39. death of 20 million of his own people

  40. dies years later from a stroke.

  41. That's not satisfying.

  42. That's not enough for someone so wicked.

  43. We all want more. We want him to get

  44. more. We feel like a lethal injection is

  45. not severe enough punishment for certain

  46. serial killers. It's human nature to

  47. want God to punish people. evil people.

  48. And so even people who don't believe in

  49. Jesus have a psychological need for hell

  50. to exist.

  51. This morning I want to show you from the

  52. Bible that hell is as horrific as heaven

  53. is wonderful. Hell is as horrific as

  54. heaven is wonderful. In the last four

  55. Sundays, we've been exploring what will

  56. happen to us in the next life. In week

  57. one, Elliot showed us that when

  58. believers die, our disembodied souls

  59. leave our dead bodies in the ground and

  60. depart to be with the Lord in the

  61. intermediate state or in a present

  62. non-permanent heaven.

  63. There we await the day of the Lord,

  64. which we explored in week two, the day

  65. when Christ returns to earth and raises

  66. the dead from all of time, believers and

  67. unbelievers. and he separates the

  68. believers from the unbelievers and

  69. assigns them to their eternal states.

  70. And in week three, we learned from

  71. Pastor Eric that believers who are

  72. raised on the day of the Lord are

  73. invited into the new world, the new

  74. heavens and the new earth. A world where

  75. heaven and earth are finally one as they

  76. were meant to be in Eden.

  77. A world that is entirely physical and

  78. entirely spiritual at the same time. A

  79. world in which death and sin and tears

  80. and pain will be no more.

  81. And then last week in week four, we

  82. learned what it will be like to finally

  83. see our God face to face. As Pastor Josh

  84. explained for us, the beatotific vision,

  85. that blessed sight that is the best

  86. thing that could ever happen to anyone

  87. ever.

  88. And here in week five of our series,

  89. we're going to look at the dark side of

  90. the new world. We're going to explore

  91. hell. Our text this morning is

  92. Revelation 20 11-15. And I really wanted

  93. to read all of Revelation 20. In fact, I

  94. told Eden that our text was going to be

  95. Revelation 20. And I lied. It's actually

  96. going to be 11-15. I don't have time to

  97. unpack the entire millennium for you.

  98. It's going to be too dicey. So, we're

  99. just going to talk about hell.

  100. verses 11 through 15. And as I've said,

  101. as we've all said in these last four

  102. weeks, that this is not an an exogetical

  103. sermon. We're not going to unpack every

  104. aspect of this particular text. We're

  105. going to launch from this text into the

  106. rest of scripture and understand what

  107. the Bible says theologically about hell.

  108. So, Revelation 20 11-15,

  109. John writes, "Then I saw a great white

  110. throne, and him who was seated on it.

  111. From his presence, earth and sky, fled

  112. away, and no place was found for them.

  113. And I saw the dead, great and small,

  114. standing before the throne, and books

  115. were opened. Then another book was

  116. opened, which is the book of life. And

  117. the dead were judged by what was written

  118. in the books, according to what they had

  119. done. And the sea gave up the dead who

  120. were in it. Death and Hades gave up the

  121. dead who were in them, and they were

  122. judged, each one of them, according to

  123. what they had done.

  124. Then death and Hades were thrown into

  125. the lake of fire. This is the second

  126. death, the lake of fire.

  127. And if anyone's name was not found

  128. written in the book of life, he was

  129. thrown into the lake of fire. This is

  130. the word of God. God help me with this

  131. text.

  132. Today, my aim is simple. I want to give

  133. you biblical answers to some of the most

  134. common questions and objections about

  135. hell. The first question,

  136. where do unbelievers go when they die?

  137. before the day of the Lord.

  138. We learned that in week one that

  139. Christians who die before the day of the

  140. Lord comes or be before Christ returns

  141. will leave their bodies here on earth

  142. and will enter the presence of the Lord

  143. disembodied in the intermediate state.

  144. What we call heaven for short.

  145. It's not the permanent heaven, but it's

  146. a temporary heaven. Christians who die

  147. go to join the Lord at his throne and

  148. they reign with him according to

  149. Revelation chapter 6 and Revelation

Revelation 6 chapter mention Revelation 20 chapter mention

  150. chapter 20. But what about unbelievers?

  151. The Christians are reigning with Christ

  152. right now. Your loved ones who have

  153. already died are with Christ in heaven

  154. reigning,

  155. waiting for the resurrection. But what

  156. about your loved ones who were not

  157. Christians?

  158. Where do they go?

  159. Do they just stay dead until the day of

  160. the Lord? Well, no. The scripture is

  161. clear. There's also an intermediate

  162. state for unbelievers. We call it hell.

  163. Although it's no more permanent of hell

  164. than the intermediate state of heaven is

  165. a permanent heaven. In the New

  166. Testament, you'll sometimes refer to

  167. this place of this intermediate hell

  168. referred to as Hades.

  169. We get a glimpse of this intermediate

  170. hell in Luke 16:es 19-31. Let me read

  171. that for you. Jesus says, "There was a

  172. rich man who was clothed in purple and

  173. fine linen and who feasted sumptuously

  174. every day. And at his gate was laid a

  175. poor man named Lazarus covered with

  176. soores, who desired to be fed with what

  177. fell from the rich man's table.

  178. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked

  179. his soores."

  180. The poor man died and was carried by the

  181. angels to Abraham's side. The rich man

  182. also died and was buried. And in Hades,

  183. being in torment, he lifted up his eyes

  184. and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at

  185. his side. And he called out, "Father

  186. Abraham, have mercy on me." And send

  187. Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in

  188. water and cool my tongue, for I am in

  189. anguish in this flame.

  190. But Abraham said, "Child, remember that

  191. you in your lifetime received your good

  192. things, and Lazarus in like manner bad

  193. things, but now he is comforted here,

  194. and you are in anguish. Besides all

  195. this, between us and you, a great chasm

  196. has been fixed in order that those who

  197. would pass from here to you may not be

  198. able, and none may cross from there to

  199. us."

  200. And he said, "Then I beg you, father, to

  201. send him to my father's house, for I

  202. have five brothers so that he may warn

  203. them, lest they also come into this

  204. place of torment."

  205. But Abraham said, "They have Moses and

  206. the prophets. Let them hear them."

  207. And he said, "No, Father Abraham, but if

  208. someone goes to them from the dead, they

  209. will repent."

  210. He said to him, "If they do not hear

  211. Moses and the prophets, neither will

  212. they be convinced if someone should rise

  213. from the dead."

  214. Now, a few observations about this

  215. passage. First, we don't know if this is

  216. a parable or not. Scholars are very

  217. divided on this point. It sounds like a

  218. parable. It's very similar to a lot of

  219. the parables that Jesus tells. But if

  220. this is a parable, it is the only

  221. parable in the entire New Testament

  222. where Jesus names a person, a specific

  223. person.

  224. He identifies the poor man as a man

  225. named Lazarus. In every other parable,

  226. the story is made up, but it teaches a

  227. true principle.

  228. But because it's not about the details

  229. of the story, Jesus never names anybody

  230. in those other parables. Here he does.

  231. So if this is not a parable but is in

  232. fact a true account, then this is a true

  233. accounting of a believer entering into

  234. the intermediate state, joining his

  235. ancestor standing at Abraham's side as

  236. Jesus calls it. And it's also about

  237. another man, an unbeliever, going to his

  238. intermediate state, the present hell or

  239. hades as Jesus calls it.

  240. Now, how do we know that this is about

  241. the intermediate state and not the

  242. eternal state after the day of the Lord?

  243. Well, there's a hint in the passage here

  244. because the rich man is begging Abraham

  245. to send people back, to send Lazarus

  246. back to warn his brothers. If this were

  247. after the day of the Lord, guess where

  248. his brothers would be? They would be

  249. with him.

  250. So, this is before the day of the Lord.

  251. This is the intermediate hell. This is

  252. Hades.

  253. There's a few things I want to point out

  254. about this present hell, this

  255. intermediate hell before we move on to

  256. the everlasting hell. First, this man

  257. who was rich in this life is now in

  258. torment. I believe Jesus is telling this

  259. story and the rich man as a character in

  260. the story are using some figurative

  261. language. Jesus telling the story and

  262. the character are using some figurative

  263. figurative language here such as have

  264. him cool my tongue.

  265. If he's in the intermediate state, he

  266. probably doesn't have a body. He's a

  267. disembodied soul. But it's so tormenting

  268. that this is the language that Jesus is

  269. using. You need to be cooled. You're in

  270. anguish in this flame.

  271. He's asking for a drop of water. And

  272. Abraham, who is the father of faith in

  273. God, seems to be the spokesperson in

  274. this story. And Abraham tells the rich

  275. man, "No, there is a chasm between these

  276. two places which no man may cross. You

  277. cannot switch sides anymore. It is

  278. appointed for a man to die once and then

  279. after that comes judgment. Once you die,

  280. there is no changing sides of this

  281. chasm. It's permanent.

  282. Now, have you ever heard anyone think

  283. like this? Or maybe you thought like

  284. this before you were a Christian. Man, I

  285. kind of want to go to hell. I've heard

  286. people talk like this. I kind of want to

  287. go to hell. Hell kind of seems like a

  288. giant party.

  289. It's where all my friends are going to

  290. be.

  291. I hate everything God loves. Therefore,

  292. I want to be far away from him. And he

  293. hates everything I love. So maybe I'd

  294. have way more fun in a place with all

  295. the stuff that I love.

  296. But did you notice what the rich man

  297. said?

  298. He said, "Warn my brothers. Don't let

  299. them come here. This is not a party.

  300. This is torment. He begs for messengers

  301. to be sent to his brothers before it's

  302. too late so that they might have a

  303. chance to repent and avoid coming to

  304. this place.

  305. So that's the intermediate state, the

  306. temporary hell for unbelievers who are

  307. awaiting the day of the Lord and the

  308. resurrection of their bodies who will

  309. then enter the permanent hell. Now let's

  310. talk about that.

  311. We're just going to refer to this

  312. permanent hell as hell from here on out,

  313. just for the sake of simplicity.

  314. Believers go to enjoy the face of God in

  315. the new heavens and the new earth for

  316. all of eternity. Hell is the eternal

  317. state for the damned. Let me give you my

  318. definition of hell. Hell is a place of

  319. physical,

  320. spiritual,

  321. and conscious torment wherein

  322. unbelievers are punished by God for

  323. their sins forever. Now, each of those

  324. words was very carefully selected. So,

  325. let me say that definition again. Hell

  326. is a place of physical, spiritual, and

  327. conscious torment wherein believers are

  328. punished by God for their sins forever.

  329. Now, I want to unpack that definition a

  330. bit by answering some of the common

  331. questions and objections about hell. So,

  332. our next question, what is hell like?

  333. What is hell like? And we'll spend the

  334. bulk of our time here.

  335. There's actually a lot of biblical data

  336. on what hell is like.

  337. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to

  338. read you several passages of scripture

  339. and unpack them a little bit. And Jesus

  340. actually spoke a lot about hell that may

  341. be surprising to you.

  342. The first feature of hell that I want to

  343. tell you about is that it is a prison.

  344. Hell is God's prison.

  345. The verse right before the text we read

  346. today in Revelation 20:10, John writes

    Revelation 20:10

  347. this. And the devil who had deceived

  348. them was thrown into the lake of fire

  349. and sulfur where the beast and the false

  350. prophet were. And they will be tormented

  351. day and night forever.

  352. Here Satan is being described as being

  353. thrown into the lake of fire. Even death

  354. and Hades, the temporary hell are thrown

  355. into the lake of fire along with all the

  356. unbelievers. anyone whose name is not

  357. written in the Lamb's Book of Life. Now,

  358. I'm going to admit something to you.

  359. When I was a kid, I used to be really

  360. scared of hell. Not for the reasons that

  361. I'm going to talk about today, but

  362. because I thought that Satan was there

  363. as the warden of hell and the demons

  364. were like the correctional officers of

  365. this prison. And I think I got that from

  366. Far Side where you have like this obese

  367. Satan with a pitchfork and a and a

  368. thorny tail poking people and like

  369. trying to torture them or something,

  370. right? And that's the image of hell that

  371. I that I had.

  372. You can put that in Josh's drawer of

  373. ridiculous ideas. If you weren't here

  374. last week, we started a junk drawer.

  375. We're going to be adding to it over

  376. time.

  377. That idea of Satan being the captain of

  378. hell goes in that drawer.

  379. Satan is not the captain of hell. He is

  380. the chief captive of hell.

  381. He doesn't run the place. He is the most

  382. tormented being ever.

  383. Revelation 20 tells us that he and all

  384. the unbelievers are cast into the lake

  385. of fire on the day of the Lord will they

  386. will be tormented day and night forever.

  387. Now this begs the question if Satan is

  388. undergoing the most severe torment of

  389. all instead of inflicting the torment as

  390. we previously thought who is doing the

  391. tormenting? Who runs hell?

  392. The absolutely terrifying, amazing

  393. answer is this.

  394. God

  395. God runs hell.

  396. I have heard so many well-meaning

  397. people, Christians, describe hell as

  398. eternal separation from God.

  399. That is unfortunately not the whole

  400. picture. The Bible does talk about

  401. separation from God in describing hell.

  402. It does, and we'll get to that verse in

  403. a moment. But that is not all that hell

  404. is. That's a reductionistic view of

  405. hell.

  406. To be away from the presence of God

  407. completely, hear this. Listen to this.

  408. To be away from the presence of God

  409. completely

  410. is what people in hell would be begging

  411. for.

  412. To have just a second of reprieve from

  413. the presence of God

  414. would be like a cool drop of water on a

  415. burning tongue.

  416. Hell is not eternal separation from all

  417. of God. It is eternal separation from

  418. God's grace, from his mercy, from his

  419. love, from his fellowship, from

  420. communion with him.

  421. God is present in hell. But people in

  422. hell will not experience all of God. Not

  423. all of his attributes.

  424. It's present in hell.

  425. But we don't want the attributes of God

  426. that are in hell expressed toward us. We

  427. want them expressed toward evil, towards

  428. the evil that's being that he's pouring

  429. it out on in hell.

  430. Anyone who goes to hell will find

  431. himself eternally tormented by God

  432. himself. They will find themselves

  433. facing his un or his righteousness

  434. against all of their ungodliness, facing

  435. his indignation against their sin,

  436. facing his well-deserved hatred against

  437. his enemies, facing his all-consuming

  438. holiness in bodies that cannot die.

  439. Facing the wrath of God that they have

  440. accumulated for themselves while on

  441. earth.

  442. So, how do I know that God runs hell? Am

  443. I just making that up or is that in

  444. scripture? It's in the Bible. Let me

  445. give you a few passages.

  446. Before I read this verse though, every

  447. few years I come across a Christian who

  448. tries to tell me that the wrath of God

  449. is not a biblical concept. I hear that

  450. every couple years. The wrath of God is

  451. not it's not in the Bible. It's not a

  452. biblical concept. Don't let anyone ever

  453. convince you of that.

  454. Romans 2:5-9 Paul writes, "But because

    Romans 2:5–9

  455. of your hard and impenitent heart, you

  456. are storing up wrath for yourself on the

  457. day of wrath, when God's righteous

  458. judgment will be revealed. He will

  459. render to each one according to his

  460. works." To those who by patience and

  461. welloing seek for glory and honor and

  462. immortality, he will give eternal life.

  463. But for those who are self-seeking and

  464. do not obey the truth, but obey

  465. unrighteousness,

  466. there will be wrath and fury.

  467. Here's another one that I think is even

  468. more clear.

  469. Revelation 14 9-11.

  470. And then another angel, a third,

  471. followed them, saying with a loud voice,

  472. if anyone worships the beast in its

  473. image and receives a mark on his

  474. forehead or on his hand, that's

  475. Revelation's way of talking about

  476. unbelievers. He also will drink of the

  477. wine of God's wrath poured full strength

  478. into the cup of his anger. And he will

  479. be tormented with fire and sulfur in the

  480. presence the presence of the holy angels

  481. and in the presence of the lamb.

  482. Christ is there

  483. and the smoke of their torment goes up

  484. forever and ever. and they will have no

  485. rest day or night. These worshippers of

  486. the beast and its image and whoever

  487. receives the mark of its name,

  488. these people, these unbelievers who

  489. rejected Christ in this life are being

  490. scorched forever in the presence of

  491. Christ.

  492. He's there and the angels are there.

  493. They are the correctional officers and

  494. he is the warden of hell.

  495. And they are administering the wrath of

  496. God that unbelievers have stored up for

  497. themselves. They are pouring out that

  498. wrath upon them and causing the

  499. inhabitants of hell to drink that cup

  500. and to smoke in torment.

  501. Now, I don't know how literal John is

  502. trying to be in Revelation, but I can

  503. tell you even if he's being symbolic,

  504. that doesn't lessen

  505. That doesn't weaken the imagery here. If

  506. a lake of fire is a symbolic lake of

  507. fire, what is that symbolic of?

  508. Something absolutely horrific.

  509. Something far worse than physical fire.

  510. I assure you. [snorts]

  511. Don't let people tell you there's no

  512. literal hell. There is a physical hell.

  513. I don't know what that means. I don't

  514. know what that looks like. But I can

  515. tell you that the scriptures are clear

  516. about it being horrifying and it being

  517. bodily physical.

  518. God

  519. runs hell.

  520. There's one more thing I want to point

  521. out to you from Revelation 14. In verse

  522. 11, John saw the smoke of their torment

  523. that goes up forever and ever, and they

  524. have no rest, day or night.

  525. No rest.

  526. This is infinite insomnia.

  527. Anyone here who has ever ever wrestled

  528. with severe insomnia knows that it

  529. messes with your mind.

  530. It messes with your mind. It changes

  531. your brain, your ability to think, to

  532. reason, to be rational.

  533. And the longer you go without sleep, the

  534. more insane you become.

  535. Josh didn't get into this last week, but

  536. one of the most common biblical words or

  537. associations with heaven in the

  538. beatotific vision in the Bible is the

  539. word rest.

  540. Rest.

  541. Seeing God's face

  542. means finally entering his rest.

  543. Finally, after decades, after a lifetime

  544. of suffering, of temptation, of falling

  545. into sin, of failing, of being hurt and

  546. being in pain, you finally enter his

  547. rest. And then in hell it says there is

  548. no rest.

  549. God's wrath poured out on you means

  550. having no rest day or night for all of

  551. eternity. Can you imagine, church, the

  552. insanity that would ensue?

  553. Millions of people in one place who have

  554. not slept in billions of years.

  555. This is no mere prison. This is an

  556. asylum for the mentally deranged. This

  557. will make the fictional Arkham Asylum of

  558. Gotham City feel like Disneyland.

  559. And it will only compound forever and

  560. ever.

  561. It gets worse.

  562. Not only is insanity compounding, sin is

  563. compounding in hell.

  564. And therefore, wrath is compounding. We

  565. see this in Revelation 16:es 10-11.

  566. The fifth angel poured out his bull on

  567. the throne of the beast and its kingdom

  568. was plunged into darkness. People noded

  569. their tongues in anguish and cursed the

  570. God of heaven for their pain and soores.

  571. They did not repent of their deeds.

  572. They cursed God.

  573. They did not repent. the prisoners of

  574. hell rather than recognizing their own

  575. worthiness to be there rather than

  576. seeing God's punishment and wrath poured

  577. out on them and being like, "Oh my

  578. goodness, I have aired. Let me repent."

  579. Instead of doing that, they curse God

  580. and they do not repent. They sin more in

  581. hell than they did on earth.

  582. They hate God even more than they did

  583. before. They hate God for punishing

  584. them. Do you hear the cycle in there?

  585. You're being punished by God, so you

  586. curse him. You hate him. So, he punishes

  587. you more. So, you curse him more.

  588. Hell is a place of compounding insanity

  589. and compounding sin and compounding

  590. wrath.

  591. Let me give you a few more.

  592. Hell is extremely physical. I've

  593. mentioned that, but I want to prove that

  594. unbelievers have a new body in the

  595. permanent hell.

  596. One that cannot be destroyed, but it can

  597. be hurt and it can be tormented.

  598. Listen to Paul in 2 Thessalonians

  599. chapter 1:es 6-9, a passage I read a few

  600. weeks ago that speaks of the day of the

  601. Lord and what happens after the day of

  602. the Lord.

  603. Paul writes, "Since indeed God considers

  604. it just to repay with affliction those

  605. who afflict you and to grant relief to

  606. you who are afflicted, as well as to us

  607. when the Lord Jesus is revealed from

  608. heaven with his mighty angels in flaming

  609. fire, inflicting vengeance on those who

  610. do not know God and on those who do not

  611. obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They

  612. will suffer the punishment of eternal

  613. destruction."

  614. eternal destruction

  615. away from the presence of the Lord and

  616. the glory of his might. There's away

  617. from the presence language. Did you

  618. catch that phrase in verse 9? They will

  619. suffer the punishment of eternal

  620. destruction. How can you eternally be

  621. destroyed?

  622. Doesn't destroyed mean being brought to

  623. an end?

  624. Only

  625. Only by putting on an immortal body can

  626. you be eternally destroyed.

  627. and be tormented day and night forever.

  628. Can you imagine? This is describing the

  629. painful process of dying

  630. but never being able to successfully

  631. die.

  632. It's the longing for annihilation but

  633. being never able to achieve it.

  634. You keep on living while being destroyed

  635. physically, mentally, spiritually.

  636. I think this is what Jesus meant when he

  637. said in Mark 9:44-49,

    Mark 9:44–49

  638. "And if your hand causes you to sin, cut

  639. it off. It is better for you to enter

  640. life crippled than with two hands to go

  641. to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And

  642. if your foot causes you to sin, cut it

  643. off. For it is better for you to enter

  644. life lame than with two feet to be

  645. thrown into hell. And if your eye causes

  646. you to sin, tear it out. It is better

  647. for you to enter the kingdom of God with

  648. one eye than with two eyes to be thrown

  649. into hell. Where the worm, listen to

  650. this, where the worm does not die and

  651. the fire is not quenched. For everyone

  652. will be salted with fire.

  653. The worm does not die.

  654. To me, this is the most grotesque image

  655. of hell.

  656. Jesus is picturing a corpse that is

  657. buried in the ground being eaten by

  658. worms. But in hell, the body is still

  659. alive and the worms don't stop and you

  660. can't die.

  661. I'm trying hard to be appropriate here,

  662. but Jesus is being so graphic.

  663. Hell is physical. I don't know all of

  664. what that means.

  665. But here we get a glimpse across the

  666. chasm.

  667. And I haven't even covered Jesus's

  668. descriptions of outer darkness,

  669. the furnace,

  670. weeping, and nashing of teeth.

  671. When you nash your teeth, it's because

  672. you are so angry or in so much pain that

  673. you have to grind your teeth together.

  674. Hell is physical.

  675. Hell is also spiritual.

  676. The prophet Daniel speaking about the

  677. day of the Lord several centuries before

  678. Jesus was born wrote this in Daniel

  679. 12:es 1-2.

  680. At that time shall arise Michael the

  681. great prince who has charge of your

  682. people and there shall be a time of

  683. trouble such as never has been since

  684. there was a nation till that time. But

  685. at that time your people shall be

  686. delivered, everyone whose name shall be

  687. found written in the book, and many of

  688. those who sleep in the dust. The earth

  689. shall awake, some to everlasting life,

  690. and some to shame

  691. and everlasting contempt.

  692. I don't know if we categorize shame and

  693. contempt as mental or spiritual or even

  694. physical punishment. Nowadays, if you

  695. have too much shame in your life, you'll

  696. be diagnosed with a mental illness.

  697. Shame can lead to physical consequences.

  698. So, it's hard to know how to categorize

  699. this, but let's just say it's all of

  700. these things. Shame is physical, mental,

  701. spiritual. Shame is a part of hell.

  702. Every person who goes to hell will know

  703. exactly why they are there.

  704. They will be ashamed.

  705. They will remember every choice they

  706. made,

  707. every time they chose sin over Christ.

  708. They will recall every disobedience,

  709. every crime, every oversight, every lack

  710. of charity, every lack of patience,

  711. every gossip, every sin will all come to

  712. mind

  713. and they will be eternally ashamed.

  714. And just like their sin will compound in

  715. hell, so will will their shame.

  716. Just like heaven will be infinitely

  717. better and longer the longer you are

  718. there, so hell will be infinitely worse

  719. the longer you are there

  720. because of compounding shame.

  721. So, we've answered a few questions that

  722. we could ask about hell, such as where

  723. do unbelievers go before the day of the

  724. Lord? What is hell like? who runs hell.

  725. Now, very briefly, I'd like to address

  726. two of the most common objections I hear

  727. about hell. And I hear these objections

  728. from both Christians and non-Christians.

  729. First,

  730. hell doesn't seem fair.

  731. And what's usually behind that objection

  732. is it doesn't feel proportionate.

  733. Doesn't feel proportionate.

  734. It doesn't seem fair that someone can be

  735. a really good person here on earth, a

  736. faithful spouse, a good parent, a

  737. contributing member to society, and all

  738. that they have done wrong, the only

  739. thing that they've done wrong is they

  740. have not believed in Jesus. That doesn't

  741. seem fair that that person would go to

  742. hell.

  743. How is that fair?

  744. [snorts]

  745. What we mean by that objection is that

  746. if there must be a hell, let it be a

  747. hell that's at least proportionate to

  748. the sins according to our standards.

  749. Now, in addressing that objection to

  750. hell, I need to settle an assumption

  751. that we have that that causes that

  752. objection. The assumption in that

  753. scenario is that the person going to

  754. hell is actually a good person. And

  755. that's why it's not fair because they're

  756. good. They don't deserve to be there.

  757. Man looks at the outward appearance, but

  758. God judges the heart.

  759. That good person has defied God over and

  760. over and over again throughout their

  761. life. They have rejected Christ over and

  762. over again throughout their life. While

  763. he was busy showering them with

  764. blessings and opportunities for faith

  765. and obedience, they were happily

  766. accepting the blessings and slapping him

  767. in the face at every call to obedience.

  768. These people were so nice to you. They

  769. are so nice to you. They're good people

  770. to you and that's why you like them. And

  771. that's why you don't want them to go to

  772. hell. You don't object to Hitler going

  773. to hell,

  774. but we object to the nice good people

  775. going to hell. But let me tell you as

  776. clearly as I possibly can, there are no

  777. good people.

  778. None. No one is righteous. No, not one.

  779. There is none who seeks after God. All

  780. have sinned and fallen short of the

  781. glory of God.

  782. The people who are nice to you and nice

  783. to me but don't believe in Jesus have

  784. slapped God in the face a thousand

  785. times. They have infinitely offended a

  786. holy God who had made them and loved

  787. them and pleaded with them to repent and

  788. they didn't do it.

  789. They rejected him.

  790. Now let me try to illustrate the the

  791. grievousness of this to you. I heard

  792. this illustration from another preacher.

  793. I don't remember who. It's not mine, but

  794. it really helped me. If you fire a gun

  795. at a paper target,

  796. there will be no consequences. You're

  797. fine. Nobody will be upset at you.

  798. Nobody will bat an eye.

  799. But if you fire that same gun, take the

  800. same action, fire that same gun, and you

  801. miss your target and you strike a house

  802. and break the window, there will be some

  803. consequences. You'll have to pay for the

  804. window. You'll probably get in a little

  805. bit of trouble for being a terrible

  806. shot.

  807. If you fire a gun at a stranger and you

  808. injure them, you will definitely serve a

  809. long sentence for attempted murder.

  810. Now, if you fire a gun at the president

  811. of the United States,

  812. you will be hunted down by the Secret

  813. Service so that you will not see the

  814. light of a courtroom.

  815. The thing that you strike, the same

  816. action, firing a gun,

  817. depending on the thing that you strike,

  818. determines the nature of the offense and

  819. the severity of the consequences.

  820. The more valuable the object that you

  821. strike, the greater the consequences.

  822. We may not be so offended by the sins of

  823. our friends. We see them sin and it's

  824. like it's no big deal. It's a big deal

  825. when it's against us, but if it's just

  826. seems like no big deal. It is a big deal

  827. to God.

  828. All sin against God is a big deal. All

  829. sin is highly offensive to him. He is

  830. the one who is always being struck and

  831. he is the he is of ultimate value and

  832. therefore the consequences will be

  833. ultimate.

  834. Those people whom we perceive as good

  835. have been taking shots at God and he has

  836. been patient with them for decades

  837. waiting for them to repent giving them

  838. opportunities to repent but there will

  839. be consequences if they do not.

  840. So my first response to that objection

  841. that hell is not proportionate or fair

  842. is that we do not judge hell rightly. We

  843. don't understand the offense against God

  844. that sin is. My second response to that

  845. is that there are gradations in hell.

  846. There are variations of punishment in

  847. hell.

  848. Meaning the sweet old lady down the

  849. street who loves you but hates God will

  850. suffer a very different version of hell

  851. than Hitler will. And we see this in 2

    2 Corinthians 5:10

  852. Corinthians 5 verse 10 where Paul

  853. writes, "For we must all appear before

  854. the judgment seat of Christ so that each

  855. one may receive what is due for what he

  856. has done in the body, whether good or

  857. evil."

  858. This verse is teaching us that each one

  859. will get exactly as they have earned.

  860. exactly as they have earned. No more, no

  861. less. God is going to be extremely fair

  862. and just.

  863. If someone is less evil in this life,

  864. then their pen punishment will be less

  865. severe than somebody who is more evil

  866. because God is always just.

  867. But I think we will all be very

  868. surprised on the day of the Lord of just

  869. how evil we actually were. I think we'll

  870. be surprised.

  871. One other thing, I didn't put this in my

  872. notes, but

  873. sometimes we we ask the question, how

  874. can somebody go to hell for just not

  875. hearing about Jesus?

  876. Did you know nobody ever goes to hell

  877. for not hearing about Jesus?

  878. Everyone goes to hell because of sin.

  879. That's it.

  880. Hearing about Jesus, believing in Jesus,

  881. that's the way out. But everyone who is

  882. there absolutely deserves to be there.

  883. Everyone.

  884. Next objection.

  885. This is a doozy.

  886. How can a good God send people to hell?

  887. We've all heard this before. We've been

  888. tripped up by this before.

  889. How can a good God send people to hell?

  890. To which I respond, and I think the

  891. scriptures respond, how can a good God

  892. not send people to hell?

  893. God's justice is at stake.

  894. Hell is more, hear this, hell is more

  895. about God than it is about you. It was

  896. never about man or mankind. It's always

  897. been about God. It's been about his

  898. holiness, his righteousness, his glory,

  899. his name, his reputation. As humans, we

  900. are masters of making everything about

  901. us.

  902. Some will ask, "How can a good God send

  903. people to hell?" And the church for

  904. centuries has responded, "How could a

  905. good God leave sin unpunished?"

  906. Forgive the darkness of this analogy,

  907. but this is what happens. This is where

  908. your mind goes when you think about hell

  909. for a month. If there was a serial

  910. killer who kidnapped my little girl

  911. and brutally murdered her and then he

  912. was arrested and brought to trial

  913. and the judge came up and sat on his

  914. bench and he said, "Due to the

  915. overwhelming evidence against this man,

  916. I find him guilty.

  917. But because I am a good judge, I'm going

  918. to let him go free.

  919. the outrage.

  920. I mean, you want to see, you see those

  921. videos of people flying over the bench.

  922. None of us would sit still. None of us

  923. would stand for that.

  924. That is not a good judge.

  925. That is a corrupt judge.

  926. We don't call that justice. How can a

  927. good judge not bring down the hammer of

  928. justice on an evil person?

  929. We all long for justice in this life,

  930. but we get squeamish because we feel

  931. that hell may be disproportionate in

  932. punishment in the next life. But this is

  933. the promise of God. Deuteronomy 32:4,

    Deuteronomy 32:4

  934. the rock, his work is perfect, for all

  935. his ways are justice. A God of

  936. faithfulness without iniquity. Just and

  937. upright is he.

  938. He is always just. He is always fair. He

  939. will never be disproportionately angry

  940. or wrathful towards anyone.

  941. [snorts] If there were ever such a thing

  942. as a light sin, it would receive a light

  943. punishment from God.

  944. But all sin is a slap in God's face and

  945. it will receive a proportionate

  946. response.

  947. None of us would complain about Hitler

  948. or Stalin or serial killers going to

  949. hell. We don't complain about God's

  950. justice in their cases. In fact, we

  951. praise the rightness of that,

  952. but we do not understand the wickedness

  953. of the rest of us.

  954. We are less wicked than them. Yet, we

  955. have still offended a holy God. All of

  956. us have.

  957. As Christians,

  958. we often say things like, "Hell is bad

  959. news and the gospel is the good news.

  960. I want to push back on that a little

  961. bit, that perspective.

  962. Hell is part of the gospel. [snorts]

  963. Hell is part of the gospel.

  964. Hell is good news because it means that

  965. God will take vengeance on your behalf.

  966. For every evil act that has ever been

  967. committed against you and the ones you

  968. love and against every evil act that's

  969. been committed against everyone in

  970. history, think of the atrocities that

  971. our world has seen. And God will not let

  972. those lie. He will deal with all of it

  973. perfectly.

  974. He will make it all right. Isn't that

  975. good news?

  976. Why do we call it bad news?

  977. He is good. He will punish all that is

  978. bad.

  979. And so the final question I want to

  980. answer today is this.

  981. How do we escape hell?

  982. How do we escape this horrifying place?

  983. The answer is so simple.

  984. It's so beautiful.

  985. John 3:16.

    John 3:16

  986. For God so loved the world that he gave

  987. his only begotten son that whoever

  988. believes in him will not perish

  989. but have everlasting life.

  990. It's the simplest thing.

  991. It's the easiest thing.

  992. If you don't want to perish for

  993. eternity, you believe in God's son. You

  994. believe that he died on the cross to pay

  995. the penalty for your sin. You believe in

  996. your heart, with your intellect, with

  997. your soul, that Jesus was crucified,

  998. that he drank the cup of God's wrath

  999. empty for you. You believe it with your

1000. heart, with your mind, with your soul

1001. that he drank every single drop and

1002. there is no more wrath.

1003. And he did it because he loves you.

  1004. [snorts]

1005. That is the only escape,

  1006. the only refuge

  1007. from hell is Christ.

  1008. >> [snorts]

1009. >> Now, in my last few minutes, I want to

1010. give you a few ideas about [snorts] how

1011. we should live in light of the reality

1012. and the horror of hell.

  1013. First, [snorts]

1014. we need to recognize that our neighbors

  1015. are immortal.

1016. Our friends, our co-workers, [snorts]

1017. our classmates, they will live forever.

1018. Will you let them go to hell without you

1019. at least pleading with them to cast

  1020. themselves desperately on Christ?

1021. [snorts] The reality of hell should

1022. awaken an urgency for us for evangelism.

1023. Have you been stalling to have that

1024. conversation about Jesus with your

1025. friends? Have you been waiting? Well,

  1026. didn't it's not the right time. Doesn't

  1027. feel right yet.

  1028. Today is the day.

1029. You don't have to preach hell to them.

1030. Hell to my neighbor. No, you don't.

1031. Hell is a doctrine for Christians, too.

1032. Hell should be a reminder for us to

1033. consider the consequences if you fall

  1034. away from Christ.

1035. Don't presume upon the grace of God.

  1036. Keep on repenting.

1037. If you're trapped in sin, keep on

  1038. repenting. Repent again.

1039. You have to make it all the way to the

  1040. end to be saved.

1041. You have to run the race with endurance.

1042. This is the entire message of the book

1043. of Revelation. The one who conquers

1044. will have eternal life. You have to make

  1045. it.

1046. You can't let up. You can't lose faith.

1047. Let the flames of hell always keep you

1048. close to Christ. Christians, let the

1049. flames of hell always keep you close to

1050. Christ. If you have drifted today, let

1051. today's sermon, let the text, let hell

1052. be the thing that draws you back and

1053. says, "I am coming back, Jesus. I have

1054. wandered and I'm back. Thank you for

  1055. taking me again."

  1056. Third,

1057. let me speak to our attitude and our

  1058. tone about hell.

1059. We should not be embarrassed.

1060. We should not be embarrassed that we

  1061. believe in hell.

  1062. Hell makes sense.

  1063. It's rational. It's just. It's

  1064. proportionate. It's in the Bible. It's

1065. the outflow of God's goodness and

1066. righteousness. And yet, we should never

1067. feel cavalier about it. Even while not

1068. being embarrassed, we shouldn't feel

1069. cavalier about hell or triumphalistic

1070. about it. I think of people who stand on

1071. street corners with signs telling people

1072. that they're going to hell or God hates

  1073. You've seen those signs.

1074. I wish I could hold out a sign that says

1075. God once hated me too.

1076. But God being rich in mercy with a great

1077. love with which he loved me.

  1078. But God.

1079. Those signs convey this attitude of I'm

  1080. better than you.

  1081. You deserve hell, but I don't.

  1082. That's wrong thinking.

  1083. That's unbiblical.

1084. The reality is that all of us were

1085. running, sprinting towards hell. But God

1086. was so rich in mercy, loved you so much.

1087. He stopped you in your tracks and said,

  1088. "Believe in me."

1089. And by his grace you did.

1090. By grace. By grace you have been saved.

1091. There is no room for arrogance among

  1092. Christians.

1093. If you believe in hell,

1094. you are not the judge. We are to be

1095. instruments of grace, not instruments of

  1096. wrath.

  1097. Finally,

1098. let your speech about hell be

  1099. compassionate.

1100. Let your speech about hell be

  1101. compassionate. [snorts]

1102. About 10 years ago, I had a really good

1103. friend of mine and we got into a

  1104. theological argument.

1105. He was telling me that he had moved from

1106. a position of the orthodox traditional

1107. Christian position of believing in a

1108. literal physical conscious hell [snorts]

1109. and he had now become a universalist. A

1110. universalist is a position that believes

1111. that everybody will ultimately end up in

1112. heaven. No matter what their stance here

1113. on earth, that they might have to be

1114. punished for a time in some other place

1115. or be purified in some way, but

1116. ultimately everybody will come to

1117. acknowledge God and to repent and to be

  1118. in heaven.

1119. So we argued about this for a while.

1120. This debate lasted several weeks and his

  1121. primary argument

1122. I thought was he was saying you know

1123. Jesus talks about this place Gehenna in

1124. the gospels and Gehenna was a known

1125. garbage dump outside of Jerusalem where

1126. they would they would burn trash and

1127. just always smoking and there's fire

1128. there and it's the place where the

1129. Israelites of old used to sacrifice

  1130. their babies to Baal.

  1131. It's just a terrible place but it's not

1132. permanent. And so he would take this one

1133. passage that's not super clear about

1134. hell and he would build he built a

  1135. theology about it. [snorts]

1136. And I remember arguing with him over and

1137. like I'm like look at the all of these

1138. verses that I read for you guys today.

1139. There's so much in scripture about hell

1140. that contradicts what he was saying. And

1141. I was like can't you see the evidence?

  1142. It's real.

  1143. And I was a I was mad. I was bugged with

1144. him. Like how could you embrace this

  1145. other doctrine?

1146. And at the end of the day, he told me,

  1147. "Jason,

  1148. my dad's not a Christian.

1149. If what you're saying is true, he's

  1150. going to hell."

1151. And I realized, oh, our tone matters.

  1152. We have loved ones

1153. who are who are there.

  1154. should break our hearts

1155. and we we should talk about it

1156. accordingly in accordance with broken

  1157. hearts with compassion.

1158. Church, let me leave you with this.

  1159. Hell is real.

1160. It is as horrifying as heaven is

  1161. wonderful.

1162. So flee to Christ your refuge. Let's

  1163. pray.

  1164. >> [snorts]
