  1. Told you, if something's weird, we have to pay extra attention

  2. to it. We have to make sure we

  3. understand it, right? So let's get weird.

  4. Some of you have been here for a while.

  5. You know, any time a sermon starts with that, we're going to

  6. talk about some interesting stuff.

  7. Did you all know there's things in the world you don't know?

  8. I just throw that out there. So, yeah, there's, there's all

  9. sorts of stuff. And did you know that?

  10. There's things you don't know about yourself in the world?

  11. Did you know that it's interesting, you know, the

  12. scripture talks a lot about like not being self deceived.

  13. The heart is desperately wicked in all of this.

  14. This is only loosely connected, but please hear me on this

  15. because this is something I found out about myself in the

  16. last week. About six days after returning

  17. from Scotland, which which was Cassie and and my second trip to

  18. Scotland, you know, partnering with living water adopt A child.

  19. I decided I wanted to do this big deep dive into my ancestry.

  20. I wanted to chase down my grandparents and their

  21. grandparents. I want to see how far back I can

  22. go just to see because as far as I know it, I'm, I'm mostly

  23. Swedish, you know, I've got some Polish in there.

  24. I've got like a, a good dose of, of Irish and then a bunch of all

  25. of the other white issues from European Europe.

  26. I don't know if you can tell, but I am, I am what they call

  27. white. So I'm researching this and when

  28. I look at this and I've done it, I've done them both.

  29. I've done ancestry, I've done the 23andMe.

  30. You know, I've heard some people say like the government's not

  31. getting my DNA sucker. They already got it.

  32. I spit in a tube. I want to know what I am.

  33. So, so I'm I'm looking at this and it says I'm about 3% Irish.

  34. Here's why about every so often they refine with the new

  35. science, right? And So what was listed as Irish

  36. was because of the British Isles and it was narrowed to sort of

  37. this area, but it was a broad area and I haven't checked it in

  38. a couple of years. I'm about 3% Irish.

  39. I'm about 22% Scottish now. Now here's what's cool about

  40. this. Not only do I here's how I know

  41. because it has traced it to a very specific region of

  42. Scotland, which is up in the Highlands around Inverness,

  43. which is where I have visited twice and didn't know it.

  44. So I come from, when I've talked to people who do know these

  45. things, they're like, oh, that's a big one.

  46. I'm like, yeah, I guess so. I'm from a clan that's called

  47. the Donald clan. Donald is my middle name.

  48. It's where McDonald McDaniel come from.

  49. Same family, same clan. I walked on a battlefield both

  50. of my visits that has my dead ancestors buried there and

  51. didn't know it, didn't know it. So now I'm looking into kilts

  52. and all that, Right? So that was a joke.

  53. All right, so I'm looking into my new heritage.

  54. Here's the thing, there's a lot about my own genetics, my own

  55. family line that I just don't know.

  56. My dad's side of the family was a complete mystery.

  57. What I want you to know is even for how you've been created and

  58. placed on this earth, you do not know every single good work that

  59. God has created you for. So having a good chat with a

  60. good friend of mine, you know, text and encouragement back and

  61. forth, texting is one of the primary ways we encourage each

  62. other nowadays. But you know, we have to be very

  63. careful because sometimes we can miss a moment and sometimes also

  64. we can stay in a moment longer than we're supposed to.

  65. But the moment that you're in right now is the moment where

  66. God wants you. And so a lot of times we feel

  67. unsatisfied and we're like, well, if I only had this, or if

  68. this would happen, or if I could just see this fruit, then I'd

  69. hold on. But this is the moment where God

  70. wants you. If he wanted you in a different

  71. moment, he would orchestrate it to be so.

  72. And you may wish that you were in another moment, but God

  73. doesn't. God wants you present where you

  74. are, and he wants you fully equipped.

  75. In the month of November, we're going to be talking a lot about

  76. how to handle demonic influence and demonic oppression.

  77. And for some people, they're like, oh, buddy, I can't wait.

  78. And for some people, they're like, I normally get sick in

  79. November. Look, if you want to be a

  80. Christian, there are dark powers out there and you need to be

  81. equipped against them. So we're going to talk about it.

  82. We're not going to do in a way that sensationalizes them.

  83. They are not more powerful than the God that you serve.

  84. So you're OK. I want you to be able to walk

  85. into this not unaware. I want you to be fully equipped.

  86. But I did have somebody doesn't go to this church.

  87. I had somebody say, why didn't you talk about the demonic stuff

  88. in in October? You know, like I said, like

  89. where Halloween is. And they were like, yeah.

  90. And I went because I don't I don't theme the the messages

  91. around holidays. It's not like a, it's like a

  92. Thanksgiving sale, you know, or something, you know, But the

  93. real reason is this. Before we talk about how to

  94. handle demonic things, you need to have the best understanding

  95. you can of the Holy Spirit. You don't have, you don't have a

  96. prayer against the demonic if you don't have the Lord.

  97. We have one more message in this series called Ghost Stories.

  98. It's about the Holy Spirit next week, which will be all about

  99. the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which we'll touch on briefly

  100. today and cover in depth next week.

  101. Today is about tongues and what is that?

  102. I think I did this last week, but how many of y'all have have

  103. heard that tongues are something that is not for today?

  104. Anybody ever hear that? OK, how many of you ever seen

  105. tongues and it's freaked you out?

  106. OK, how many of you don't really know what you believe about it,

  107. right. So OK, we're going to walk

  108. through a lot of scripture today.

  109. Welcome to Bible college. So I want to start by talking

  110. about a name that a lot of Christians know, very famous

  111. Christian author, His name is Max Lucado.

  112. We aware of Max Lucado. All right, So man, he's like the

  113. poster child for this now. So most of you probably know who

  114. he is. And if you don't, just know that

  115. he's written over 60 books. So he's been a pastor for

  116. decades. And he's one of the most widely,

  117. widely read Christian authors in the world.

  118. And he comes from a church background that was definitely

  119. not known for speaking in tongues.

  120. Doesn't matter what it was. What's interesting is that he

  121. encountered this pretty early in his life.

  122. And this is a part of his story. Not a lot of people know he had

  123. encountered this because when he was young, he came up in what we

  124. now call the Jesus movement. I'm so grateful for the Jesus

  125. movement. I'm just going to say this

  126. though, it's man, what a lazy name for it though, because

  127. isn't it all supposed to be the Jesus movement?

  128. Like that's Christianity. The Jesus movement though, was

  129. this big uptick in like spirit filled things, getting fresh

  130. words, All the stuff we talked about last week, Word of wisdom,

  131. word of knowledge, right? Having the Spirit fall upon his

  132. people and creating unity that you couldn't orchestrate on your

  133. own happened a lot in the 70s, early 80s.

  134. And he's coming up through this, and as he's coming up through

  135. it, he decides he's going to try to pray in a language he's never

  136. learned. He was open to it, and he tried

  137. and nothing happened. So he moved on.

  138. And he decided I must have been wrong.

  139. But eventually, Max Lucado, he wandered from God, came back to

  140. God, went into ministry, became a pastor, and spent decades

  141. serving Jesus. And I want you to hear what I'm

  142. not saying. He has been a faithful servant

  143. to the Lord. As far as I know, it's a big

  144. Kingdom. Different denominations don't

  145. upset me. But the tradition that he came

  146. from taught that these kinds of supernatural gifts, including

  147. tongues, had ceased, that they had a purpose in the early

  148. church, but that they weren't something Christians should

  149. expect today. And then Max Lucado got to be

  150. about 64 years old. And I love this part of the

  151. story. And I say his age there on

  152. purpose because I want you to know that Max had been doing

  153. this for a very long time. And at this point, he had

  154. preached thousands of sermons. He had written more books than

  155. most people ever read. Nobody would have looked at his

  156. life and thought, this guy needs to learn a little bit more about

  157. Christianity. And he came across a verse, and

  158. it's an exact verse that we ended with last week.

  159. I'm going to read it to you. It's first Corinthians 14.

  160. One, let love be your highest goal.

  161. But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit

  162. gives, especially the ability to prophecy.

  163. Max Locato said his assumption had been essentially, well, I

  164. became a Christian. God gave me the gifts he wants

  165. me to have. So I guess I have what I'm

  166. supposed to have. That is how most Christians

  167. live. We have become Christians.

  168. We have gotten saved. And we assume if He wants us to

  169. have something, He would do it. We assume if He ever wanted us

  170. to get up and preach or share our story, then He would make us

  171. love public speaking. Little do you know that most

  172. people who do public speaking for church don't enjoy public

  173. speaking. It puts a spotlight on them.

  174. It makes them a target of discussion when they're not in

  175. the room. But we don't get to choose the

  176. gifts that God gives us because if you remember from last week,

  177. the Holy Spirit alone decides what gifts we are to receive.

  178. So he just said, well, I don't really have tongue, so I guess

  179. that's not for me. But Paul says to desire them.

  180. I mean, we just read this. And so it hit Max Lucado.

  181. He said, I don't know if I've ever eagerly or depending on

  182. your translation, earnestly desired the spiritual, spiritual

  183. gifts. I've just accepted what he gave

  184. me. So he started praying God, what

  185. do you want me to have? I, I want to want what you want

  186. me to want. Paraphrase mine.

  187. He was just taking the scriptures that Paul authored

  188. seriously and asking God if there was anything else he

  189. wanted to give him. And then one morning at 64 years

  190. old, Max Lucado said he was praying.

  191. And he began praying in what he describes as a heavenly

  192. language. And he's been pretty open about

  193. the fact that it surprised him because he had been taught that

  194. these languages stopped. But it has now become a part of

  195. his private prayer life. And he describes that his words

  196. as a very tender part of his morning with God.

  197. Here's something I really appreciate about the way that he

  198. tells the story. By the way, he goes out of his

  199. way to say this, This doesn't make me a better Christian.

  200. And I want you to hear that he does not believe it makes him a

  201. super St. He's like levelled up.

  202. He's got the plus package. He doesn't even display his gift

  203. of tongues publicly. That's a different category.

  204. We'll get there. This is just something that

  205. happens privately between him and God.

  206. And so I wanted to start there today because not that I'm

  207. telling you, you need to be the next Max Lucado or something.

  208. Max Lucado is not scripture. He's just a decent author.

  209. But I do think his story gives us a good view about what we're

  210. going to talk about today. Maybe you assume that there was

  211. nothing more. Maybe you assume you understood

  212. it. But I'm going to tell you the

  213. day that you assume you understand everything about God,

  214. despite every scripture that talks about it being a mystery.

  215. That's the day you become spiritually closed off to

  216. anything new that God may want to do in you.

  217. You think Balaam expected his donkey to talk in the Old

  218. Testament? He did not, right.

  219. Do you think that Moses expected the water to part before God

  220. said do this? He did not.

  221. Do you think the disciples expected so much of what they

  222. witnessed in the life of Jesus? And I'm just standing up here as

  223. a humble servant of the Lord, telling you that I refused to

  224. read through the Old Testament and all the supernatural things.

  225. I refused to read through the New Testament to hear about all

  226. the supernatural things that happened with Jesus and after

  227. his death, burial and resurrection happened through

  228. His disciples, His apostles, all of His servants.

  229. I have read enough of church history to know that the

  230. supernatural does happen. I've also watched enough TV to

  231. know that some people take advantage of it.

  232. But you do know that the fact that a counterfeit exists means

  233. there's something real, right? Monopoly money only makes sense

  234. because money exists, but only one of them spends.

  235. Ask me how I know. So this morning, I'm not asking

  236. for you to agree with me on everything that I'm about to say

  237. to you. I'm not asking you to agree with

  238. everything that you've seen somebody do in the name of the

  239. Holy Spirit. I am asking you to do what Max

  240. Lucado did. Here's what I'm asking you.

  241. This is my request. Before I really start preaching,

  242. I want you to become curious enough to open the Bible again.

  243. Not just willing, not faithful, not obedient.

  244. I'm asking you to become curious about what God may have for you.

  245. In fact, I taught on this before and when I did, I gave everybody

  246. these fill in notes because I didn't want you to just listen

  247. to me talk about tongues for 50 minutes and then go home

  248. believing whatever I told you. I want you to be able to look

  249. into it after today for yourself.

  250. We're going to do that again today.

  251. Also. A lot of times you'll hear a

  252. good point in a sermon, whether it's here or another church, and

  253. then somebody that you love, you'll be telling them about it

  254. and they'll say, well, what did they say?

  255. And you can't quite remember all of it because there's a lot of

  256. information that gets handed out in a sermon.

  257. You're now armed with the paperwork.

  258. OK, There's a lot in the Bible about this, and I think part of

  259. the reason Christians have argued about tongues so long is

  260. that we've taken several different things in scripture,

  261. called them tongues, and assume they must all work the same way,

  262. but they don't. So what does the Bible actually

  263. say? If you're following along in the

  264. notes, I'm going to start giving you some answers.

  265. There are four different experiences that are all

  266. referred to as tongues. 2 of them are very similar, but there

  267. are four different experiences that are all referred to as

  268. tongues, and the first one is the day of Pentecost.

  269. So let's talk about tongues at Pentecost, right?

  270. This is part of tongues in in public.

  271. If we're going to figure out what the Bible means when it

  272. talks about tongues, then the obvious place to start is

  273. Pentecost. Jesus has told the disciples at

  274. this point, he has told them to stay in Jerusalem and then wait.

  275. And in Luke 2449, it says that they are going to be clothed

  276. with power from on high. And in Acts chapter 1, he tells

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  277. them the Holy Spirit is going to come upon them and give them the

  278. power to be his witnesses. That's a, that's a big umbrella

  279. to sit under though, isn't it? He says the Holy Spirit will

  280. come upon you. He'll empower you.

  281. You'll be able to be my witnesses.

  282. They don't have any other details.

  283. And we have the whole New Testament, but I want you to

  284. imagine that you're in that day. You have no clue what to expect.

  285. They just know Jesus told them to wait, so that's what they do.

  286. So in Acts chapter 2, very first verse, it says on the day of

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  287. Pentecost, all the believers were meeting together in one

  288. place and suddenly there was a sound from heaven like the

  289. roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where

  290. they were sitting. And then what looked like flames

  291. or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each one of them.

  292. Ironically, that's not even the tongues we're talking about, but

  293. everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began

  294. speaking in other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them this

  295. ability. That tells me they didn't even

  296. all get that ability at the same time.

  297. It said as the Holy Spirit gave this to them.

  298. At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in

  299. Jerusalem and when they heard the loud noise, everyone came

  300. running and they were bewildered to hear their own languages

  301. being spoken by the believers. They were completely amazed.

  302. They said how can this be? These are all people from

  303. Galilee, but we hear them speaking in our own native

  304. languages. It goes on to list a whole bunch

  305. of them and it says in verse 11, both Jews and converts to

  306. Judaism, were there Cretans and Arabs?

  307. And it says, and we all hear these people speaking in our own

  308. languages about the wonderful things that God has done.

  309. So it's not just the ability to speak in another language.

  310. It is specifically praising God and speaking about the wonderful

  311. things he's done there. And it says they stood there

  312. amazed and perplexed and said, what can this mean?

  313. Just like we would have. I don't have time to really dive

  314. into it, But I do think it's funny too, when people are like,

  315. well, maybe they're drunk. Every preacher has always said a

  316. sentence every now and then that they were like, I never thought

  317. I'd have to say that. But you know, Peter comes in,

  318. he's like 9:00 AM is much too early to be drunk.

  319. That's his answer to them. But this is where a lot of

  320. people immediately think about when they hear the phrase

  321. speaking in tongues. But there's something very

  322. specific happening at Pentecost that I don't want us to miss.

  323. These are actual earth languages that the people around them

  324. recognize. So these are people in Jerusalem

  325. that are they're from all over the known world, and they're

  326. amazed because they're hearing Galileans speaking in their own

  327. native languages. I mean, if I start suddenly

  328. preaching in fluent in Mandarin this morning, something has

  329. happened, right? Nobody's going to say Pastor

  330. Blake must have had a really productive Duolingo week, right?

  331. But, but as far as we know, and I want to be clear on this, this

  332. is the only time in Scripture that this has ever happened.

  333. I'm not willing to tell you that it's never happened on the earth

  334. outside of this, but I am willing to tell you in Scripture

  335. this is the only time this has ever happened.

  336. And this is important. You don't have to turn there

  337. yet, but I'm going to read this to you first Corinthians 14.

  338. Two, this is as Paul is talking to the church in Corinth.

  339. Listen to what he says about tongues.

  340. If you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking

  341. only to God. Only to God.

  342. Does that sound like what we just read?

  343. No, you'll be talking only to God.

  344. He says since people won't be able to understand you, you'll

  345. be speaking by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  346. But it will all be mysterious. So already you can see the split

  347. in at least 2 because you heard this time where they've got

  348. tongues happening and everybody hears them in their own

  349. language. But now you've got to hear where

  350. he says you're only talking to God.

  351. Nobody's going to understand what you're saying.

  352. Two different things. So at Pentecost, you hear people

  353. listening and saying I understand what they're saying,

  354. but Paul says they're not going to.

  355. And there are actually two other places in the book of Acts where

  356. tongue shows up spontaneously. So before we move on to that,

  357. let me give you a couple of your blanks right under Luke 2449 in

  358. your notes. If you're following along and if

  359. you're not, you won't hurt my feelings.

  360. What happened with this wave of the Holy Spirit that fell?

  361. It happened due to three things, due to unity, prayer, and

  362. obedience. And I'm just standing up here

  363. telling you that it is very rare for a church to be unified with

  364. all of this, to be unified with one another, unified in prayer,

  365. unified in obedience. Most of us, honestly, we are

  366. semi obedient Christians in America.

  367. We will do the things that we know God wants us to do and we

  368. will do the things that make us feel like good Christians.

  369. And then when He tells us to do something difficult, we count on

  370. the fact that He's so forgiving and He'll understand if we drag

  371. our feet. But if we would get unified in

  372. prayer and obedience, it would change everything.

  373. The next word in your blanks there is unique.

  374. This is unique. Just like I told you everyone

  375. understood them. This is the only time that

  376. happens in scripture. Your blank under Acts 2 is that

  377. this never happens again in the Bible, never in the Bible.

  378. And your last blank before we move on to #2 is that they could

  379. understand them in the story from Acts 2.

  380. So clearly, this is not the gift of tongues.

  381. It is a supernatural experience that can be appropriately

  382. described as tongues, but it is not the gift of tongues.

  383. OK, All right #2 everybody good. If you're not, cheat off of your

  384. neighbor #2 this is what we would call spontaneous tongues.

  385. This happens in three places. The first one, we've just read

  386. through the day of Pentecost. We can see some sort of

  387. miraculous thing happened on the day of Pentecost.

  388. Then in Acts chapter 10, this is what we call the Gentile

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  389. Pentecost. Who are we?

  390. I don't know, That's just what somebody told me.

  391. Acts 10, starting in verse 44, it says this.

  392. Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell

  393. upon all who were listening to the message.

  394. The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed at the

  395. gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles too,

  396. for they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God.

  397. And then Peter asked, Well, can anyone object to their being

  398. baptized now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as

  399. we did? So he gave orders for them to be

  400. baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

  401. Afterwards, Cornelius asked them to stay with him for several

  402. days. We get to Acts 19 after that,

  403. and Acts 19 is actually our foundational scripture for next

  404. week. So I won't spend a lot of time

  405. on this, but this is Paul on the road to Ephesus.

  406. This is where he approaches some believers and they say, what

  407. baptism did you receive? And they look at Paul and they

  408. said, well, John's baptism. And they, you know, Paul says,

  409. listen, John, John had a baptism that was for repentance, but the

  410. baptism, the Holy Spirit will baptize you in power.

  411. They look at him and they say, we haven't even heard that

  412. there's a Holy Spirit, which unfortunately would be like a

  413. lot of modern Christians too, because the Holy Spirit doesn't

  414. get the same attention that the Father and the Son do.

  415. And so at that point, he lays hands on them and prays for them

  416. and baptizes them in the name of the Holy Spirit, in the name of

  417. the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And they start speaking in

  418. tongues. So you can see four places here

  419. that happened spontaneously. Why do I want you to know this?

  420. Because it is not the norm for it to happen spontaneously.

  421. This is something I did not know before I started attending this

  422. church well over 20 years ago. I got my information about

  423. tongues from TV and we didn't even have streaming back then,

  424. right? So, So what I saw was, was

  425. normally not even made as Christian media.

  426. It was normally like a little kid scared looking through his

  427. window at some preacher or some church service.

  428. And it looked like somebody was having a spiritual seizure,

  429. yelling out Shamala Hamala, right.

  430. And the kid didn't know what was happening.

  431. And so I just assumed, well, if that ever happens to me, then

  432. God's going to have to force it to happen.

  433. I remember when we were first teaching on the Holy Spirit, we

  434. had a student who flung himself over into a chair and then he

  435. said the Holy Spirit hit him so hard that he bruised his

  436. forehead. And the youth pastor at the time

  437. that I was serving under, he said, I've never known the Holy

  438. Spirit to harm somebody. So here's what I want you to

  439. know. It can be easy to get swept up

  440. in what you think it looks like and try to get moved by emotion.

  441. That's not what you do. You cannot be pursuing these.

  442. You can desire them, but you can't try to force them to

  443. happen. Like we've been saying through

  444. this whole series, here's what I want you to really understand in

  445. Acts 19. Here's your blanks here.

  446. Paul's introducing the disciples to the baptism of the Holy

  447. Spirit, and it says tongues and prophecy followed.

  448. Here's what's so important. None of these moments had

  449. someone asking for tongues. None of them were even seeking

  450. the gift of tongues. All they were seeking was more

  451. of God. If we would genuinely seek God

  452. and everything that He desires for us, He will equip us with

  453. what we need. Now the next section, which I'll

  454. get to in just a moment, is the public display of tongues,

  455. church services. And this is where we'll spend

  456. most of today because this is where almost all of the

  457. confusion comes from. I don't want people sitting here

  458. saying I don't want tongues and I'm not going to pursue it.

  459. I also don't want people here thinking that they're less than

  460. if they don't have it. I just want you to know that all

  461. throughout the book of Acts, it shows us pretty clearly tongues

  462. are real. They showed up in really

  463. significant moments as the gospel began moving beyond

  464. Jerusalem. And this is where Paul begins to

  465. give us some boundaries on it. So here's what you need to know

  466. before we start working through what Paul says about tongues in

  467. First Corinthians. There's something about this

  468. letter that is really important to understand.

  469. And you may say, well, Pastor Blake already know.

  470. Well, cool. Not everybody does.

  471. This is not the first letter can be confusing, right, because

  472. it's called First Corinthians. The first letter was sent to

  473. Paul. So he helped establish this

  474. church in Corinth. Corinth had questions.

  475. They had a lot of issues. As a matter of fact, I've often

  476. thought about how fun it would be to just do a study and go

  477. through 1st and 2nd Corinthians. And I thought, like, I want to

  478. call it, you know, we've got issues, right?

  479. Because it's literally they sent him a letter and oh, how I wish

  480. we had it where they said, here are all the problems happening

  481. in our church. For the love of God, Paul,

  482. please help us. And so he writes back with what

  483. we now know as First Corinthians with answers and suggestions and

  484. methods. And this is all sorts of things

  485. from like gender roles in church to sexuality issues to sin that

  486. was running rampant to tongues. So you need to understand, even

  487. if you don't know what you believe right now, for what

  488. we're going to read in these next few chapters, I want you to

  489. read it through the filter that Paul believed tongues was normal

  490. and he was answering problems and he was trying to help them.

  491. OK, We know that from First Corinthians 7/1, by the way,

  492. that they had already written to him.

  493. So you can write that down if you want to look at it.

  494. But on top of all their questions, Paul had received

  495. reports about problems in the congregation from other people.

  496. So we are getting his responses to their questions and his

  497. corrections about things that he has heard.

  498. For the Corinthians, you need to know that speaking in tongues

  499. was a normal part of church life, and you don't find a

  500. single verse where Paul tries to convince them that tongues is

  501. real. He's just talking to them like

  502. it is. OK.

  503. So whatever disagreements Christians have about the gifts

  504. today, we need to recognize that the controversy Paul's

  505. addressing isn't whether these things should exist, it is how

  506. they are handled. Apparently the Corinthians had

  507. turned their church services into something of a free for

  508. all. Paul was trying to get everybody

  509. back on the same page. Normally I like to do an

  510. illustration where I have a drummer do this, but I didn't

  511. set it up today. We had a ghost drummer today.

  512. Our team is so good. They can do whatever, but I'll

  513. have the drummer come up and start drumming while I'm in the

  514. middle of preaching and just show you how distracting it is

  515. when something happens where it's not supposed to.

  516. Drums are extremely helpful during the worship portion,

  517. aren't they? I'm so grateful for the people

  518. who practice their vocals and they sing.

  519. I'm so grateful for the people who run sound so well.

  520. But if they start playing around with all those things at one

  521. time, it's discordant, it's chaos, it's out of order, right?

  522. This is what Paul's going to tell them.

  523. So let's go and start in First Corinthians chapter 12.

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  524. Look at this long list of scriptures you got there.

  525. Isn't that beautiful? All right, this will sound

  526. familiar. There are different kinds of

  527. spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them.

  528. All. This is in the context of a

  529. church service back in the day. OK, there's different kinds of

  530. service, but we serve the same Lord.

  531. God works in different ways, but is the same God who does the

  532. work in all of us. Spiritual gift is given to each

  533. of us so that we can help each other.

  534. Once again. Every gift you'll ever get from

  535. the Lord is for somebody else. To one person, the Spirit gives

  536. the ability to give wise advice. To another, the same Spirit

  537. gives a message of special knowledge.

  538. The same spirit gives great faith to another and to someone

  539. else. The one spirit gives the gift of

  540. healing. He gives one person the power to

  541. perform miracles and another the ability to prophecy.

  542. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a

  543. message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit.

  544. That's where we ended last week. We covered those 7 gifts.

  545. And he goes on to say still another person is given the

  546. ability to speak in unknown languages or tongues, while

  547. another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.

  548. It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts.

  549. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

  550. This is a huge list of things that were happening in the

  551. church. People were getting words of

  552. wisdom, words of knowledge. People were seeing miracles,

  553. right? People were experiencing great

  554. faith for one another. And yes, messages were being

  555. delivered in tongues and there were being interpretations.

  556. He's just trying to emphasize this.

  557. Everybody's getting a different gift.

  558. So there is room for everybody in this, yes.

  559. So we already started a lot of those gifts last week.

  560. But I want you to remember that these gifts are so we can help

  561. each other. So if you've got a gift of

  562. tongues, it's not because you got a little special extra

  563. something, something from the Father.

  564. It is because you are supposed to be praying things that you

  565. need to be praying, which we'll cover more in a moment.

  566. OK, Fast forward First Corinthians 12/27.

  567. It says all of you together are Christ's body and each of you is

  568. a part of it. Here are some, not even all.

  569. Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church.

  570. First, our apostles. Second, our prophets.

  571. Third, our teachers. Then those who do miracles.

  572. He just gave up on the numbering, didn't He?

  573. Those who have the gift of healing.

  574. Those who can help others. Did you know helping others as a

  575. gift. Those who have the gift of

  576. leadership. Those who speak in unknown

  577. languages or tongues. He was on to say, Are we all

  578. apostles? Are we all prophets?

  579. Are we all teachers? Do we all have the power to do

  580. miracles? Do we all have the gift of

  581. healing? Do we all have the ability to

  582. speak in unknown languages? Do we all have the ability to

  583. interpret unknown languages? Of course not.

  584. So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts.

  585. Well, there's that idea again, isn't it?

  586. How do you know what the most helpful gift for you is?

  587. You probably don't, but I know someone who does.

  588. He says this. Now let me show you a way of

  589. life that is best of all. All right, on your notes here,

  590. this is addressed exclusively in First Corinthians 12/13 and 14.

  591. All right, Paul is addressing issues that were written to him.

  592. He calls it a gift. That's your next blank there.

  593. Paul calls it a gift. So whatever you think of it,

  594. remember, it's a gift. Paul asks this giant run on

  595. rhetorical question, and the assumed answer is no.

  596. Do we all have these abilities? Paul never discredits it.

  597. What's your next blank? Paul never discredits it.

  598. He regulates it for order in a church service and even

  599. encourages it. Get ready.

  600. Your next blank, by the way, is that Paul will call it the

  601. language of angels. So when we're talking about a

  602. public gift of tongues, we're talking about something that's

  603. intended to function in a gathering of believers for the

  604. benefit of the congregation. Paul is pretty clear that not

  605. everybody's going to have this gift in a church service.

  606. And so we're going to come back to that in just a little while.

  607. I think there's a a big difference between the public

  608. gift Paul is talking and what he describes as praying in tongues

  609. privately. But before he tells them how to

  610. handle these gifts, he does something that's interesting.

  611. I don't want you to miss this. He stops and he spends an entire

  612. chapter talking about love. Now, this is a chapter that's

  613. worked into weddings a lot of times.

  614. I think sometimes we read First Corinthians 13, a wedding so

  615. often we forget why Paul wrote it, but it's wedged right in the

  616. middle of him talking about these gifts and these ways that

  617. we're supposed to uplift one another and edify one another in

  618. a church service. And I'm not saying it's bad to

  619. have it in a wedding, but I just want you to understand that

  620. being spiritually gifted doesn't automatically make you

  621. spiritually mature. So he's saying, I want you to

  622. desire these gifts, but not as much as I want you to have love

  623. for one another. And we've heard this before.

  624. It's been in that song for for king and country saying and all

  625. of that. But if I possess all of this,

  626. all knowledge, all of this, and I can speak languages of the

  627. angels, but I don't have love. I'm nothing.

  628. He says love is what really does matter the most.

  629. You must genuinely love one another.

  630. If you want tongues because you feel like you're missing out,

  631. wrong motive. If you want tongues because you

  632. want to feel better than you are right now, you're missing out.

  633. If you want tongues because you think you might be able to

  634. benefit another believer and you don't know what else to do, and

  635. you will start eagerly desiring the gifts that the Spirit has.

  636. Bingo. All right, so listen to this.

  637. The beginning of 13 First Corinthians 13.

  638. He says it. If I could speak all the

  639. languages of earth and of angels, but didn't have love for

  640. others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

  641. You ever known somebody like that?

  642. That's OK if you do, just don't look at them, he says in verse

  643. 2. If I had the gift of prophecy

  644. and if I understood all of God's secret plans and possessed all

  645. knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move

  646. mountains but didn't love others, I would be nothing.

  647. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrifice to

  648. my body, I could boast about it, but if I didn't love others, I

  649. would have gained nothing. This is heavy.

  650. This is very serious to Paul, and we trivialize them.

  651. We put it on some sort of like Hobby Lobby decor.

  652. We do. But Paul even mentioned speaking

  653. in tongues of men and angels. And people have spent a lot of

  654. time talking about if he's describing an actual angelic

  655. language. I had a chat with somebody

  656. yesterday who said that if it's the language of angels, then

  657. when you speak in tongues and somebody else speaks in tongues,

  658. it should sound identical. And I went, no, that's that's

  659. the way we understand it. But we actually have lips and a

  660. tongue and all of that. These spiritual beings, they're

  661. made of something different than we are.

  662. We'll get to it. This is also where people

  663. sometimes point to Paul saying that tongues and prophecy will

  664. eventually cease. Listen to this First Corinthians

  665. 13/8. Prophecy and tongues and special

  666. knowledge will become useless, but love will last forever.

  667. Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of

  668. prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture.

  669. But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will

  670. become useless, he says. When I was a child, I spoke and

  671. thought and reasoned as a child, but when I grew up I put away

  672. childish things. That's its own sermon.

  673. Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a

  674. mirror. But then we will see everything

  675. with perfect clarity. And he says, All that I know now

  676. is partial and incomplete. But then I will know everything

  677. completely, just as God now knows me completely.

  678. And then of course, we know this one.

  679. Three things will last forever. Faith, hope, and love.

  680. And the greatest of these is love.

  681. So he says that tongues will cease.

  682. But he also says prophecy and special knowledge will become

  683. useless. And he connects some of that to

  684. the time when what's partial gives way to what is complete.

  685. Think about this. When we step into glory one day,

  686. who's going to have to give a word in tongues and get an

  687. interpretation? Or are you going to be OK

  688. because you're right there sitting in front of the Father,

  689. not going to need it? Would it not be weird if you're

  690. sitting right in front of the Father and then somebody comes

  691. to you and says, I have a word from the Father for you.

  692. He would go, Father does he, right?

  693. So a lot of these gifts that he's talking about, he says one

  694. day you won't need these. They'll be complete and you'll

  695. understand so much more. Right now, you only understand

  696. part of it. He's even saying he only

  697. understands part of it. Now, some people use this

  698. scripture to say that the perfect has come, that the time

  699. of the perfect has come, and what they're talking about is

  700. the Scripture, and I understand where they're coming from with

  701. it. But he does also say that words

  702. of knowledge and prophesying will also cease.

  703. And in that same school of thought, which is primarily put

  704. in like the Matthew Scofield expository, like commentary and

  705. all of this, it talks about how prophesying is the same as

  706. preaching. Those words are interchangeable

  707. to them. And unless you find a church

  708. that says preaching is no longer necessary, it's a weird church.

  709. I don't know what it looks like. It hasn't all ceased, OK?

  710. We can't just pick one gift that we're uncomfortable with and

  711. declare that it's finished. How would you like to look God

  712. in the face one day and say, I limited what you could do on

  713. this earth because I told people you don't do that anymore.

  714. So I would just be very hesitant before you declare that it's

  715. over. But Paul also wants you to

  716. remember love is the thing that has to govern everything that

  717. you do with what God gives us. Any word of knowledge, any word

  718. of wisdom, any miracle, any laying on of the hands, any sort

  719. of debate, any apologetics, anything that you do for the

  720. Lord should be fueled by love. If it's not, throw it away.

  721. All right, First Corinthians 14, let's go to the first verse.

  722. All right, says in verse one he's continuing this.

  723. So let love be your highest goal.

  724. Does this sound familiar? We said the first verse earlier,

  725. but you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit

  726. gives, especially the ability to prophecy, which again is

  727. interchangeable in some denominations as preaching.

  728. Now he says, if I have the ability to speak in tongues,

  729. listen to this so carefully. If you have the ability to speak

  730. in tongues, you will be talking only to God since people won't

  731. be able to understand you. So tongues is a thing and who

  732. are you talking to? God.

  733. He says you will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it

  734. will all be mysterious. So the one who prophesized

  735. strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.

  736. A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but

  737. the one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire

  738. church. So in other words, if I get up

  739. here and it's just because of a funny video I saw online, I'll

  740. just use Shamala Hamala as the placeholder.

  741. If I stand up here and preach Shamala Hamala and it's genuine,

  742. not the weird video I saw. It says right here what we read

  743. is that I am personally strengthened and y'all are

  744. sitting there like what is happening?

  745. So again, he's talking about a public church service and he's

  746. saying if you're going to do this, I'd rather you prophecy if

  747. you're going to get a gift because you know what, if I've

  748. got a prophecy, then I can say, hey, you know what Ahava, this

  749. is what is going to happen. The Lord says this to you.

  750. Fill in the blank. I don't know what it is, right?

  751. But that's what prophecy is that benefits you.

  752. But Shamala, Hamala strengthens me.

  753. He's like, guys, you're gathering together.

  754. Why are you making it all about you?

  755. Now let's go on verse 5. Listen to what Paul says.

  756. I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish

  757. you could all prophecy for prophecies greater than speaking

  758. in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying

  759. so that the whole church will be strengthened.

  760. So I just picked on Ahava, but if I were to Shamala, Hamala

  761. right here, right? And then Ethel stands up and is

  762. like the Lord said, that what that means is that Ahava is

  763. going to win an Emmy or whatever it is.

  764. OK, well that's funny. You're sitting next to Emmy

  765. anyway. I didn't even think about that

  766. when I said it. Now, not only has there been a

  767. prophecy for the whole congregation, but for people

  768. that are new, that are curious about the Spirit, they've just

  769. witnessed a miracle. That's going to be important to

  770. understand. We'll get there.

  771. Paul doesn't discourage speaking in tongues.

  772. He says, I wish you could all do it, but in a church gathering,

  773. I'd rather you prophecy because it'll strengthen everybody.

  774. He's saying I want you to have the best possible church

  775. gathering you can have. I want the most people to be

  776. impacted. I want the most people to

  777. receive something from the Lord that is possible.

  778. So tongues without interpretation does not

  779. accomplish that for a congregation.

  780. Somebody could stand up and deliver the most incredible

  781. message you've ever heard and you wouldn't know it because it

  782. was all in tongues. And they would be strengthened.

  783. And they'd go home and say, I've been great.

  784. And you'd be like, that guy's crazy.

  785. I'm never coming back here. So it's not enough for somebody

  786. to stand up and say something that nobody understands and then

  787. have everybody agree. It was a really spiritual

  788. moment. That would be weird, wouldn't

  789. it? What was church like today, man?

  790. Somebody got up and prayed in tongues for 35 minutes.

  791. Oh my goodness. What was the interpretation?

  792. What did they say? Oh, I don't know what it meant,

  793. but it was God. You could tell he was in the

  794. room. What does that do to equip you

  795. for your faith? It's not the purpose when we

  796. gather together in the ecclesia, in the gathering, OK, in the

  797. assembly. And that's why Paul includes

  798. interpretation as another gift of the Holy Spirit when in

  799. public, when in a church service, because the purpose is

  800. not for you to impress everybody with something supernatural.

  801. It is for the church to be strengthened.

  802. First Corinthians chapter 14. Now we're in verse 6.

    1 Corinthians 14 chapter mention

  803. Listen, dear brothers and sisters, if I should come to you

  804. speaking in an unknown language, how would that help you?

  805. But if I bring you a revelation or some special knowledge or

  806. prophecy or teaching, that will be helpful.

  807. Even lifeless instruments like the flute or the harp must play

  808. the notes clearly or no one will recognize the melody.

  809. If you've ever been to a middle school band concert, it wasn't.

  810. It wasn't anybody you know that was playing it that way.

  811. It was the other kids. But all I'm saying is I remember

  812. getting my recorder in the 4th grade and said, mom, listen to

  813. me play hot cross buns. Thanks, mom.

  814. All right, Verse 8, if a bugler doesn't sound a clear call, how

  815. will the soldiers know they're being called the battle?

  816. And he says in verse 9, it is the same for you.

  817. If you speak to people in words they don't understand, how will

  818. they know what you're saying? You might as well be talking in

  819. the empty space. By the way, I know this is not

  820. exactly what he's talking about there.

  821. I also think about that when we use what I call Christianese, we

  822. get so inundated into church culture and then we talk to

  823. somebody who's not in a church and we start using all these

  824. church terms and they're like, you're, you're covered in wet

  825. blood. Like, I mean, explain it to

  826. them, understand, like help them.

  827. OK. So listen, verse 10.

  828. There's many different languages in the world and every language

  829. has meaning. But if I don't understand a

  830. language, I'll be a foreigner to someone who speaks it.

  831. And the one who speaks it will be a foreigner to me.

  832. And the same is true for you. Since you're so eager to have

  833. the special abilities the Spirit gives, seek those that will

  834. strengthen the whole church. That is such a practical

  835. argument, isn't? It's hard to argue that I want

  836. you to have some cool stuff from God, but I really want it to be

  837. the stuff that's going to benefit the whole church because

  838. he's not interested in just raising up one and two people.

  839. He wants to raise up a whole church that's on fire for the

  840. Lord, wants to know what their gift is, wants to discover their

  841. purpose, wants to make a difference.

  842. And how do you do that unless you are lifting one another up?

  843. Paul takes it even further and he starts talking about those

  844. people that might visit like we were talking about in verse 20

  845. of the same chapter. He says don't be childish in

  846. your understanding of these things.

  847. Be innocent as babies when it comes to evil, but be mature in

  848. understanding matters of this kind.

  849. It's written in the Scriptures and he gives, he gives some

  850. scriptures here. And then in verse 22, he says,

  851. you see that speaking in tongues is a sign not for believers, but

  852. for unbelievers. Doesn't mean there's no purpose

  853. for believers, but it's not a sign for believers.

  854. We're already believers. Even so, unbelievers or people

  855. who don't understand these things may come into your church

  856. meeting and hear everyone speaking in an unknown language.

  857. They will think you are crazy. Have you ever dealt with that

  858. before? This is the first church I ever

  859. heard people pray in tongues, and it is far from the only

  860. church where they do it. But when I first got here, I was

  861. like, what is that? But if all of you are

  862. prophesying and unbelievers or people who don't understand

  863. these things come into your meeting, they'll be convicted of

  864. sin and judged by what you say. As they listen, their secret

  865. thoughts will be exposed in the fall to their knees.

  866. Didn't worship God, declaring God is truly here among you.

  867. In other words, if somebody comes in, they don't know God

  868. and you say Shamala Hamal, they're like, oh cool, I found a

  869. cult. But but if they walk in here and

  870. they meet somebody and they're like word of knowledge, word of

  871. wisdom, one of these things pops up, right?

  872. Some sort of prophecy moment. You're really hurting.

  873. You have a family member that is far from you and the Lord wants

  874. you to know their story's not over.

  875. What happens when they walk into a church and that hits and they

  876. haven't told anybody there. Is she right?

  877. So he's saying that this is extremely valuable for somebody

  878. who does not understand these things.

  879. Now in verse 26, well, we'll do verse 26.

  880. Let me give you some some blanks here first, OK?

  881. They speak not to men, but they speak to God.

  882. I think that's at the top of one of your sheets for those of you

  883. who are doing the notes right. Although this alone is not

  884. enough to verify tongues, the next one is no one understands

  885. him. The person praying in tongues,

  886. nobody understands him. His spirit is speaking mysteries

  887. to God. Mysteries to God.

  888. Paul goes on to say tongues in public edify nobody.

  889. That's your blank Nobody, unless accompanied by an

  890. interpretation. OK.

  891. Paul wishes that everyone spoke in tongues with the caveat that

  892. there is an interpretation. Interpretation so that the

  893. church will be built up. And we're about to read this

  894. part coming up shortly. But he instructs the orderly

  895. display in public while still encouraging it.

  896. Orderly. And Paul explicitly forbids

  897. anybody. Nobody forbids.

  898. He forbids the forbidding of speaking in tongues.

  899. We'll get there. Here's what he says in First

  900. Corinthians 1426. He says, Let's summarize.

  901. When you meet together, one will sing, one will teach, some will

  902. give a special revelation God has given.

  903. Another will speak in tongues. Another will interpret what is

  904. said. But everything that is done must

  905. strengthen all of you. Somebody's teaching something

  906. and there's no application. It's not going to apply to your

  907. life. Shouldn't be teaching.

  908. If somebody's going to sing and they want to sing, it's a small

  909. world after all, instead of worship, music shouldn't be up

  910. here singing, OK? It has to strengthen everybody.

  911. And he says no more than two or three should speak in tongues.

  912. Even there, he's like, let's not get crazy.

  913. You need to have room for everything else.

  914. And he says they must speak one at a time and someone must

  915. interpret what they say. Isn't that interesting?

  916. So if there is a spiritual seizure that takes over a

  917. believer, which there isn't, how could they go one at a time?

  918. You have control over when you start in tongues and when you

  919. stop praying in tongues all throughout worship.

  920. When I'm over here, I can alternate 5050.

  921. I pray in tongues. I pray with my understanding and

  922. listen to this. This is an interesting statement

  923. in verse 28. But if no one is present who can

  924. interpret, they must be silent in your church meeting.

  925. Some people wish that's where that sentence ends because it

  926. says and speak in tongues to God privately.

  927. So I've also spoken to people who say, well, I believe that

  928. it's a miracle that happens sometimes in a church service,

  929. but there's no such thing as a prayer language.

  930. Well, I understand that the term prayer language isn't in the

  931. Scripture, but neither is the word Trinity and most people

  932. don't have a problem with that. Also, another word that's not in

  933. the Bible is Bible. So it says if they're speaking

  934. in tongues, but there's no one present who can interpret, they

  935. have to be silent in the church meeting and speak in tongues to

  936. God privately. There must be a benefit to doing

  937. it in private. Let two or three people

  938. prophecy, let others evaluate what is said.

  939. But if someone's prophesying and another receives A revelation

  940. from the Lord, the one who's speaking must stop.

  941. And this way all who prophecy or preach will have a turn to speak

  942. one after another so that everyone will learn and be

  943. encouraged. Remember that those who prophecy

  944. are in control of their Spirit and can take turns.

  945. For God is not a God of disorder, but of peace, as in

  946. all meetings of God's holy people.

  947. So nobody gets to use the Holy Spirit as an excuse for

  948. interrupting everybody, refusing correction, or taking over the

  949. service. I've seen it happen in a public

  950. church service here maybe three times or so in the last five

  951. years that I've been leading the church as a lead pastor.

  952. But I'll never forget Pastor Anna, who was our worship pastor

  953. for many years. She was up here and, and I

  954. remember during worship one morning because Miss Judy right

  955. there had a word from the Lord and she was proclaiming

  956. something in tongues and had the interpretation.

  957. And I watched Pastor Anna immediately go, you remember it,

  958. Sarah, do you remember this morning?

  959. Like she goes, she goes like this and everybody just kept

  960. doing what they're doing because she was like, we're making room

  961. for this moment. And you had the word and you had

  962. the interpretation. And then Pastor Anna very wisely

  963. said what you guys just saw was biblical.

  964. It was a manifestation of tongues and an interpretation.

  965. She explained what it was. Now, the next day at staff

  966. meeting, I said, what would you have done if that was a stranger

  967. that we didn't know to be somebody who who is a a man or

  968. woman of God? She goes, oh, I'm pretty sure

  969. Jed would have turned up the sound a little bit more, right.

  970. So so we're not somewhere where we're just going to let whoever

  971. do whatever they want. Everything needs to be done in

  972. order. So if you can tell if the Lord's

  973. Spirit is speaking to your spirit that tongues is

  974. happening, or if it's somebody that you recognize with a gift

  975. that that has been proven true, it's a whole different ball

  976. game, right? Nobody gets to use the Holy

  977. Spirit as an excuse for interrupting everybody or for

  978. refusing correction or for taking over service.

  979. It will not happen in this house.

  980. The rest of the chapter talks about instructions about women

  981. speaking in the gathering, and that's a separate discussion and

  982. a separate sermon that we don't have time to settle this

  983. morning, but I'm happy to talk about it.

  984. But then he finishes with two verses that I really wish

  985. Christians on both sides of the tongues discussion would take

  986. seriously. Listen to this in 39 and 40, my

  987. dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophecy and don't

  988. forbid speaking in tongues, but be sure that everything is done

  989. properly and in order. You should never forbid speaking

  990. in tongues, but you also can't let people do whatever they want

  991. at any time. It's a both end and and there

  992. are church traditions that say that you are not saved unless

  993. you speak in tongues. It's false.

  994. There are also church traditions that say you go to hell if you

  995. speak in tongues because it's demonic.

  996. That's false. Paul says don't forbid it.

  997. He just gives them boundaries while continuing to encourage

  998. the gift. How can you exercise boundaries

  999. and have it be orderly if you're not in control of it?

1000. So I just think some churches have allowed so much disorder

1001. that they've ignored practically everything else Paul said about

1002. it. Neither of those ideas seems

1003. like a particularly good way to handle the Scripture.

1004. So here's what I want you to understand about tongues in the

1005. church. Paul says it's a genuine gift of

1006. the Holy Spirit. Not everybody receives that

1007. public gift. He teaches that it needs

1008. interpretation if it's going to benefit the congregation.

1009. And then he says speak in tongues to God privately.

1010. So not everybody has the public gift.

1011. And one of the reasons, you know, you're not supposed to do

1012. it in public, as if there's not an interpretation, but I really

1013. believe that we have access to it in private.

1014. So let me go ahead and lay that out for you before we go home

1015. today. Private tongues #4 in your

1016. notes, private tongues or a prayer language?

1017. Prayer language is a better way to call it that.

1018. If you want to talk about freaking out people that aren't

1019. in the church, tell them that you learned about private

1020. tongues and see what they think about that sentence.

1021. So we're going to say prayer language.

1022. All right. Now this is where the

1023. conversation gets really interesting because most of the

1024. arguments I've heard with people that say tongues don't happen

1025. today. They focus almost exclusively on

1026. what happens in a church service.

1027. And people will point to Paul saying not everybody speaks in

1028. tongues and there has to be an interpretation, but they're

1029. correct in a public sense. But he does say, if you don't

1030. have an interpretation, go home and pray to God in tongues in

  1031. private. Listen to this.

1032. Let love be your high school, right?

1033. If you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be speaking

1034. only to God since people won't be able to understand you.

1035. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit.

1036. It'll all be mysterious. You are speaking to God when you

1037. speak in tongues. But you notice how Paul says it?

1038. He says you're only speaking to God, not other people.

1039. So sometimes people will say like, I didn't get anything out

1040. of that. That's not genuine.

1041. No, it lines up with Scripture. If you got up here and prayed in

1042. tongues right in front of me, unless the Lord wanted to do

1043. something for the whole church, I would have no clue what you're

1044. saying, nor should I. Why?

1045. Why would I, right? But there's clearly a personal

1046. benefit that's being described here.

1047. Paul isn't saying that personal strengthening is bad.

1048. He's just saying if you get up in front of everybody and try to

1049. strengthen yourself instead of everybody, that's bad.

1050. So he goes on even further. 1st Corinthians 1413.

1051. Here's what Paul says, his personal experience with

1052. tongues. Lord, would you please just set

1053. some people free today? Says in verse 13, anyone who

1054. speaks in tongues should pray also for the ability to

1055. interpret what has been said. I've had people tell me you

1056. can't pray for your own interpretation.

1057. What does that mean? Then anybody who speaks in

1058. tongues should pray also for the ability to interpret what has

1059. been said. OK, verse 14, for if I pray in

1060. tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don't understand what I'm

1061. saying. Sometimes people have tried to

1062. pray in tongues and they said, Pastor Blake, I tried it, I just

1063. didn't really understand it. Good.

1064. You're on the right track. OK, well then what shall I do?

1065. Here's what Paul says. Here's what Paul does.

1066. You can do what you want. He says I'll pray in the Spirit

1067. and I'll also pray in words that I understand.

1068. He says I'll do both. He says I'll sing in the Spirit,

1069. but I'll also sing in words I understand.

1070. Guys, I've never sang in the Spirit.

1071. I've heard it. I've never done it.

1072. I try not to sing publicly to begin with.

1073. So, but listen to him in verse 16.

1074. He says, if you praise God only in the Spirit, how can those who

1075. don't understand you praise God along with you?

1076. How can they join with you and giving thanks if they don't

1077. understand what you're saying? And here's what he says about

1078. praying in the Spirit, verse 17. You will be giving thanks very

1079. well, but it won't strengthen the people who hear you.

1080. So even in praying in tongues, you can be giving thanks to the

1081. Lord very well and not understand what you're saying.

1082. He just says nobody else is going to get it.

1083. And then you know Paul, he's a little bit of a knucklehead.

1084. Listen to him in verse 18. I thank God that I speak in

1085. tongues more than any of you. All right, Paul.

1086. But then he brings it back home, verse 19.

1087. But in a church meeting, I would rather speak five understandable

1088. words to help others than 10,000 words in an unknown language in

1089. a church meeting. OK, lots of things are going on

1090. there, right? So his understanding is not

  1091. involved. That's disengaged here.

1092. He's saying in a church meeting, it's better to say words that

1093. edify other people. But here's where my own

1094. conviction comes in, and I want you to understand this.

1095. I believe that while the public gift of tongues is distributed

1096. by the Holy Spirit according to His will, I fully believe that a

1097. private prayer language is something every believer can

1098. earnestly desire and ask God for.

1099. But you're going to feel weird if you've never done it before.

1100. It's going to be weird. As a matter of fact, if you've

1101. done it before, it still might feel weird to you.

1102. But I also don't believe that receiving the Holy Spirit means

1103. you've automatically experienced everything that God wants you

1104. to. He is constantly revealing

1105. Himself. Let me go ahead and say this

1106. real quick. We'll be in Romans 8 in just a

1107. moment. If I say the words red frog to

1108. you, what did you just picture a red frog?

1109. OK, good. It was not a trick question.

1110. I am surprised nobody went. Jesus, give me the VBS answer.

1111. You picture a red frog. You know why?

1112. Because you know what red means and you know what frog means.

1113. OK, listen to this in Romans chapter 8, verse 26 through 28.

    Romans 8:26–28

1114. Everybody loves verse 28, but we'll get there in a couple

1115. verses. The Holy Spirit helps us in our

1116. weakness. For example, we don't know what

1117. God wants us to pray for, but the Holy Spirit prays for us

1118. with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.

1119. And the Father who knows all hearts knows that what the

1120. Spirit is saying for the Spirit capital S Spirit pleads for us

1121. believers in harmony with God's own will.

1122. And we know here we are in verse 28 that God causes everything to

1123. work together for the good of those who love God and are

1124. called according to His purpose for them.

1125. Now, I love this because I think he acknowledges something that

1126. every Christian can relate to. Sometimes we don't really know

1127. what to pray for. First of all, I love that If

1128. Paul got a little baffled when he got in the prayer closet, I

1129. feel a little bit better about myself.

1130. But he says this, He says that the Holy Spirit helps us in our

1131. weakness. And I don't think that praying

1132. in tongues is the only thing he's talking about in Romans 8.

1133. I don't want you to think like, oh, just out of nowhere, he's

1134. got this random spot where he's just talking about tongues.

1135. What I want you to know is what he's speaking about there is the

1136. Holy Spirit and how sometimes we just don't know how to pray.

1137. We don't know exactly what God's will is.

1138. So what does the Holy Spirit do? He intercedes for us in power,

1139. in our weakness, and he intercedes in groans that words

1140. can't understand. Now, does that mean the shamala

1141. hamala that comes out? Or is that just spiritual talk?

1142. Doesn't matter. What we know is this.

1143. The Holy Spirit can pray in line with his own will.

1144. And here's why this matters. When I pray for you, I've prayed

1145. for most people that I can see here that if I know you by name,

1146. I've prayed for you at some point.

1147. I pray my will. I pray with my understanding.

1148. I pray my will to God's ears. I also pray in tongues.

1149. So I don't know what I've prayed about you there, but I hope that

1150. I've prayed God's will on me and God's will on you.

1151. A lot of times we are filling up our prayer time asking God for

1152. things that we know to ask for. But the tongues will end up

1153. asking him for things that we don't know to ask for.

1154. And we'll be giving him thanks in different ways too, because

1155. his own spirit prays in conjunction with our spirit to

1156. pray God's will. We don't always pray God's will,

1157. we pray our will. Does that make sense?

1158. So that being said, under private tongues and prayer

1159. language, I believe that a prayer language is for every

1160. spirit filled Christian. This is a relevant topic for

1161. today to address why Christians seem to lack power in their

1162. prayer life. And I'm not here to make anybody

1163. feel bad, but if there's conviction, that's between you

1164. and the Lord. I think that being able to pray

1165. in tongues adds power to your prayer life.

1166. We can only pray our will with our understanding.

1167. I can't pray His will. If I asked you to pray for me,

1168. you would pray the things that you want for me and you would

1169. pray the things you think I want for me, but you would have no

1170. guarantee of praying everything that God wants for me unless you

1171. pray in conjunction with his own Spirit.

1172. OK, now the Holy Spirit knows the will of God, even we we

1173. don't. So the last blank right there is

1174. that most critics focus on the public display and never get to

1175. the private benefits. And I've got a lot of context

1176. verses for you there, but I've got one more that I want to

1177. cover after these these blanks that are there with Romans 8.

1178. Here's what it tells us. First of all, we don't know how

1179. to pray. We don't know how to pray.

1180. Secondly, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

1181. Third of all, the Spirit within us prays according to God's

  1182. will. That's according to God's will.

1183. And by the way, this is in contrast to our own will.

1184. I know, I know. It may shock some of us to hear

1185. that our will is not His will. But OK, you don't have to turn,

1186. but I've got it listed there. First, John chapter 5, verses 14

    John 5:14

1187. and 15. Listen to what we hear about the

1188. nature of this God we serve. We are confident that He hears

1189. us whenever we ask for anything that pleases Him.

1190. And since we know He hears us when we make our requests, we

1191. also know that He'll give us what we asked for.

1192. Sometimes we don't get what we asked for because we don't ask

1193. in accordance with His will. But you know, it has a 100%

1194. accuracy rate. Tongues praying in the Spirit.

1195. OK, John says we're confident that God hears us when we ask

1196. for things that please him. And I'll be the first one to

1197. tell you I've prayed prayers that I know didn't please him.

1198. They weren't even bad prayers. They just weren't in line with

1199. his will. And then the last thing that

1200. I'll read in this section is Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

1201. It's just one verse, verse 18. How many of y'all have done

1202. Iwana Bible studies before anybody, right?

1203. I'm not bashing Iwana, by the way.

1204. You don't have to, like, hold your head in shame, right.

1205. You know, one of the things that I want to love covering, really

1206. just churches in general love covering of those.

1207. The armor of faith. Isn't it great what you got?

1208. You got the helmet of salvation. You just remember this, The

  1209. breastplate of righteousness. Yeah.

1210. The belt of which implies that there's pants, even though

1211. that's not covered, right. So we got the belt of truth,

1212. right. How about those shoes, The shoes

1213. of the shoes of peace, Right. Like, I know So.

1214. So you've got this, all right. And at the very end, it's it's

1215. talking about all the pieces of the armor of faith.

1216. And then it says this in verse 18.

1217. And I've never seen this in an Awana study that covers the

1218. armor of faith. Pray in the spirit capital S by

1219. the way, pray in the spirit at all times and on every occasion.

1220. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers

1221. everywhere. So if you say praying in the

1222. spirits just for church, why does it say at all times and on

1223. every occasion? That feels very inclusive,

1224. right? Stay alert and be persistent for

1225. your prayers for believers everywhere.

1226. This is included in the armor of faith.

1227. It's power guys. And so it might make you feel a

1228. little weird, but are you willing to feel a little weird

1229. if you're going to access something that's going to help

1230. embolden your prayers, strengthen your your prayer

  1231. life? Again, I wouldn't argue that

1232. every time that the Bible says pray in the spirit, it's talking

1233. about praying in tongues, but it's talking about whatever you

1234. have to do to pray your spirit in conjunction with God's

1235. Spirit. So one thing that I do want to

1236. make clear, I have something that I taught three years ago

1237. when I taught on this that I've changed on.

1238. And maybe you've heard this too, especially if you've been here

1239. for three years. I have taught before that when

1240. you pray in tongues, one of the added benefits is that the enemy

  1241. can't understand what you're saying.

  1242. I don't know that that's true. I don't know that that's true.

1243. I, I know stories of when I was under a demonic attack and the

1244. only way I could say the name of Jesus was in my mind and my, my

1245. lips didn't move and I was in a paralysis moment and it broke

1246. because I said the name of Jesus with my mind.

1247. Scripture never tells you whether or not I don't know how

1248. spiritual beings communicate. They don't have mouths like this

1249. is what I was talking about earlier with the tongues of

1250. angels. So I'm not here to tell you

1251. whether he can or can't hear your prayers.

1252. But what I will tell you is this.

1253. I am much more concerned that I am praying with the backing of

1254. heaven than to the confusion of hell.

1255. OK, so anyway, that's further revelation that I have.

1256. I don't want to explain something to you like it's

1257. scriptural if it doesn't come from the Scripture.

1258. I can't promise you that the enemy doesn't understand your

  1259. tongues. They're spiritual beings.

1260. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't. I don't really care because I

1261. know who I serve. Does that make sense?

1262. OK, so I do want you to consider as we wrap up this morning,

1263. whether or not you've ever actually asked God about this or

1264. if you've been so dogmatic and so convinced that it's not for

1265. you or it's not for today or it's not whatever, that you've

1266. never asked God for it. I think there's a big difference

1267. between saying God, I trust you with whatever you want to give

1268. me, and God, I trust you. But I've already decided that

1269. there are certain things I don't want to do.

1270. So should you pray in tongues? That's the last thing.

1271. If you want to, and I would encourage you, at least go for

1272. it this week. OK, here's what you do.

1273. The first thing you do is you ask for it.

1274. But I do want you to know, if you've never spoken in tongues,

1275. it doesn't mean that you are missing the Holy Spirit.

1276. It just means that maybe this is something you've not

1277. participated in before, but you've got to eagerly desire it.

1278. And we saw some spontaneous moments where people started

1279. praying in tongues, but it's not the norm.

1280. So if you want it, you're going to have to ask for it and you're

1281. going to have to get a little uncomfortable.

1282. This is where the second step comes in.

1283. You have to desire it more than you desire to control or

1284. understand it. These are also your blanks there

1285. at the end. You have to desire it more than

1286. you desire to control or understand it.

1287. You know, Pastor Tom was my pastor for many years.

1288. And he told the story about how his wife prayed in tongues

1289. before he did. And then he ended up in prayer

1290. saying, Lord, why does she get it?

1291. And I don't get it. I want to pray in tongues.

1292. So just for hours he was trying to say, God, I want you to give

1293. this to me. And then one day, or not one

1294. day, but one moment, he said that the Lord said, what does

1295. Marsha sound like when she does it?

1296. And he just said what he had heard her say, because he said

1297. I'm not going to go to bed until I speak in tongues.

1298. And the Lord said, what does she sound like?

1299. And he said what he heard her saying.

1300. He said the Lord said you can go to bed now.

1301. OK, when I say red frog, you picture a red frog because you

1302. know what these words mean. When you just give word vehicles

1303. to the Lord, you don't know what you're saying, but He does.

1304. Your spirit is praying in conjunction with His Spirit and

1305. you'll feel weird. So my advice is when you try it,

1306. try it alone, OK? Sit on the end of your bed, lock

1307. that door, put on a sound machine, play something from

1308. your phone. I don't know, do it alone

1309. because otherwise you're going to be worried about what other

1310. people think. I was part of an experiment one

1311. time where somebody stood people in a circle and told them to all

1312. try. At one time it was one of the

1313. most uncomfortable spiritual things I've ever been a part of.

1314. I'm around 12 people all faking tongues at one time.

1315. My poor OCD was screaming at me. Right.

1316. You have to desire it more than you desire to control it or

1317. understand it. And so if you really want to try

1318. it, you've got to be asking for it.

  1319. You've got to be trying. That's Part 3.

1320. Just try it, God. Just give them some words that

1321. aren't your own and see if the Holy Spirit gives you peace.

1322. You don't have to do it for hours.

1323. You don't have to do it for 15 minutes.

1324. Do it for 2 minutes and see what happens.

1325. And the last thing I would tell you is don't give up.

1326. Some people believe that you need the baptism of the Holy

1327. Spirit in order to have tongues. I don't think that that is true,

1328. but I think there's a lot of power in the baptism, the Holy

1329. Spirit. And I want you to know that's

1330. where we're going next week. This week, here's my challenge

1331. to you. This is what I want you to pray.

1332. Holy Spirit, is there anything you've wanted to do in my life

1333. that I have been unwilling to receive?

1334. If you get through this week and nothing's different, that's OK,

1335. Nothing's different. But if there is something

1336. different, whether it's tongues, whether it's a word of

1337. knowledge, whether it's just listening, whether it's him

1338. talking to you about your prayer life or how you treat your

1339. spouse, is there anything you want me to do that I have been

1340. unwilling to receive? Tell him I'm willing to receive

1341. it today and see if he speaks to you.

  1342. Amen.
