  1. Pray.

  2. Our God and Father, this morning as we who are your children come into your presence, we do so

  3. ! We do so because you are the one who in your loving kindness and grace lifted us out of the pit

  4. and changed the heart of a rebel into a worshiper.

  5. We're thankful that this morning as we look into your word and we rely upon the ministry of the Holy Spirit,

  6. we can see more of the Lord Jesus and we can grow in appreciating his love and his work.

  7. And we can have our hearts stirred to look forward to the day that we will see him face to face.

  8. We're mindful this morning that our hearts, our thoughts are inclined to wonder.

  9. And we recognize that we need your help, your encouragement, the work of the Holy Spirit,

  10. that we would think deeply of the truths that you have for us

  11. and that seeing those truths, we would be changed from glory into glory,

  12. growing to be more like the Lord Jesus Christ,

  13. reflecting our Savior's character and heart

  14. to the people that you place us in connection with

  15. and that you would stir us this morning to love righteousness and hate sin, even like Jesus.

  16. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  17. Amen.

  18. I want you to turn your Bibles this morning to John chapter 19, verse 28.

    John 19:28

  19. And as we begin this morning, let me just take a minute

  20. and remind you of something that I anticipate probably doing for about another year.

  21. I think there's been very few Sundays that I have not said to one or many of you,

  22. pray for me.

  23. That's not a lesson that I learned early in pastoral ministry,

  24. but one that I remember actually sitting back about where Joe Holloway is

  25. because my youngest son was an absolute infant at that time.

  26. And I was sitting back there when Bill Brock resigned from the ministry here

  27. and became the state representative.

  28. And he taught a series of lessons about the importance of praying for your pastor

  29. and the role that prayer had in ministry.

  30. And it affected me deeply.

  31. It's carried me through the last 35 years.

  32. So you're going to hear me say that for about another year.

  33. Remember to pray for me.

  34. And I trust that that will have stuck in your mind adequately

  35. that whether or not Pastor Shearer says it as often as I do,

  36. my wife accuses me of being profoundly redundant.

  37. I love her anyway, but, you know, I say things many times.

  38. I trust whether or not Pastor Shearer says it as often as I do,

  39. you will remember to pray for him because the Scriptures encourage you to pray

  40. for those that God calls to teach the Word of God.

  41. So you pray for me,

  42. and you rely upon the Holy Spirit to take the Word of God

  43. and hammer it home to the glory of Christ.

  44. Let me read, beginning there in verse 28.

  45. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished,

  46. said to fulfill the Scripture,

  47. I thirst.

  48. A jar full of sour wine stood there,

  49. so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch

  50. and held it to his mouth.

  51. When Jesus had received the sour wine,

  52. he said,

  53. it is finished.

  54. And he bowed his head

  55. and gave up his spirit.

  56. I have to tell you this morning,

  57. as I take this passage in hand,

  58. I am profoundly aware

  59. of the significance of my dependence

  60. and your dependence on the Holy Spirit

  61. in understanding and applying this passage to our life.

  62. We are looking this morning at the very epicenter,

  63. the focal point of the plan of God in redemption.

  64. And this morning's passage is not one

  65. that I trust you will sit here

  66. and allow it to kind of waft over you

  67. and just kind of think,

  68. oh, well, okay, you know,

  69. he did the blah, blah, blah.

  70. No.

  71. This should be a passage that affects you.

  72. And if it does not,

  73. the fault does not lie in the text,

  74. but the fault will lie in you and in me.

  75. So prayer.

  76. With that being said,

  77. I want you to recognize

  78. that as we take this passage there in verse 28,

  79. we're dealing, first of all,

  80. with Jesus making a very clear announcement

  81. of his completed work.

  82. Recognize the opening words of verse 28,

  83. after this,

  84. prompt us to take a moment

  85. and really stop and think of the larger context

  86. of what had been taking place.

  87. If you were to look in John alone,

  88. you would recognize that over there in verse 27,

  89. Jesus made a comment about the relationship

  90. that John the Apostle was to have with his mother.

  91. But if you were to take the larger part

  92. of the synoptic Gospels,

  93. you would understand that actually

  94. between the time of Jesus being put on the cross

  95. and the time of his death,

  96. there was a substantial amount of time that elapsed.

  97. John, consistent with his objective

  98. of focusing principally on the glory

  99. and the supremacy of Jesus as God himself,

  100. does not give us a great deal of information

  101. about the history

  102. or the practical issues related to the crucifixion.

  103. It focuses primarily on Christ,

  104. the Lord, and his death.

  105. What you would note,

  106. if you were to look at the synoptic Gospels,

  107. is that there had been a three-hour period of darkness.

  108. And during that time,

  109. one of the things that took place,

  110. Jesus had cried out in accordance with the Old Testament,

  111. particularly in Psalm 22,

  112. my God, my God, what?

  113. Why have you forsaken me?

  114. And if you were to stop and go back there,

  115. and I'm not asking you to do that,

  116. but you'll remember in that passage

  117. that Jesus, even as he was thinking

  118. of what was taking place,

  119. his heart must have found some comfort

  120. in the remainder of the passage in Psalm 22,

  121. which says this,

  122. but thou art holy.

  123. God could not look upon the sinfulness

  124. that Jesus bore at that moment.

  125. And so here we find these two little words

  126. tell us about what had taken place in this time

  127. as Jesus bore our sins.

  128. Now what we read next in the passage is this,

  129. Jesus, knowing that all was now finished,

  130. said to fulfill the Scriptures,

  131. I thirst.

  132. Jesus knew at this time

  133. that his work was complete before he died.

  134. I want you to ponder that just for a moment.

  135. Jesus knew,

  136. and here's a little point to stick in your mind,

  137. the words of Scripture are preeminently important,

  138. and we do not help ourselves

  139. if we don't think carefully

  140. about the exact nature

  141. of what the Holy Spirit has tended,

  142. in this case, to tell us.

  143. Do you follow?

  144. Why is it there?

  145. What's that say?

  146. How does it fit?

  147. What's its value to me?

  148. Here is Jesus knowing in advance

  149. that his work is completed.

  150. His death had not happened yet.

  151. So you have to ask yourself the question,

  152. how could it be said

  153. that he knew that his work was finished?

  154. Look at the word again there in verse 28,

  155. Jesus knowing that all was now finished.

  156. I want you to recognize in relationship to that,

  157. first of all,

  158. that all of the Old Testament prophecies

  159. concerning him had been completed and fulfilled.

  160. There wasn't a single prophecy

  161. given in the Old Testament

  162. that Jesus had not brought to fruition

  163. and fulfilled.

  164. And so when he said,

  165. it is finished,

  166. he understood

  167. and he was clear in his thinking

  168. that all that had been prophesied regarding him

  169. had been cared for.

  170. Secondly,

  171. he knew that he had glorified his Father

  172. and done everything

  173. that the Father had appointed him to do.

  174. It is finished.

  175. Furthermore,

  176. I want you to understand

  177. that Jesus had suffered for our sins

  178. and satisfied the judgment

  179. that we were due.

  180. So how can you say,

  181. in advance of his work being complete,

  182. how could he say,

  183. it is finished?

  184. Well, let me propose two thoughts

  185. in relationship to that.

  186. For one,

  187. the sovereign plan of God

  188. to send his Son

  189. into the world

  190. to take our place

  191. and die for our sins

  192. had been accomplished

  193. by Jesus coming

  194. as an infant,

  195. living,

  196. and then dying as he was,

  197. dying at that moment on the cross.

  198. And so when he said,

  199. it is finished,

  200. before his death,

  201. he was referencing

  202. the plan of God

  203. for salvation

  204. and the fact that it had come to fruition.

  205. Now,

  206. it's a little bit like,

  207. I'm thinking about

  208. the men's retreat

  209. that will take place.

  210. I'm debating

  211. whether I want to go off

  212. the zip line again.

  213. You have to climb

  214. way up high

  215. on the zip line.

  216. Anybody else done it?

  217. It's kind of an arduous journey up there

  218. and you're asking yourself,

  219. why am I doing this?

  220. I did say that several times,

  221. but I thought,

  222. once I started up,

  223. no going back down.

  224. And they buckle you in

  225. and you are there

  226. teetering

  227. into the face of eternity.

  228. Your feet are kind of

  229. resting on the very

  230. cusp of the moment

  231. and you don't have

  232. to jump off, right?

  233. But the minute

  234. you give in to gravity,

  235. it's all over.

  236. And here was Jesus

  237. hanging on the cross

  238. and the reality of this

  239. is that

  240. the inevitability

  241. of what God had ordained

  242. was taking place

  243. and he said,

  244. it is finished.

  245. And we understand

  246. that the unchangeable nature

  247. of God

  248. and his infinite power

  249. was bringing

  250. to complete fruition

  251. that had been planned

  252. from eternity past.

  253. Furthermore,

  254. and I'm not going to have you

  255. turn back to the passage

  256. we looked at

  257. in Isaiah chapter 53 earlier,

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  258. but if I were to direct you

  259. to that passage

  260. just for a moment,

  261. you will notice

  262. that 700 years

  263. before Christ died

  264. on the cross,

  265. the Spirit of God

  266. speaking through Isaiah

  267. chose to use

  268. the past tense

  269. in numerous instances

  270. referring to what Christ

  271. would do for us.

  272. He was wounded

  273. for our transgressions.

  274. He bore our sin

  275. upon himself.

  276. It says,

  277. it pleased the Lord

  278. to bruise him.

  279. And on repeated occasions

  280. as we read in Isaiah,

  281. we see here

  282. that the indication

  283. is that God

  284. had accomplished

  285. already,

  286. prophetically though

  287. it was being uttered,

  288. he'd already accomplished

  289. the work of redemption.

  290. Another little note

  291. in relationship to this

  292. is that the way

  293. in which we determine

  294. accomplished action

  295. has primarily to do

  296. with time.

  297. Something that's going

  298. to take place

  299. in the future,

  300. it will be.

  301. Something that has been done,

  302. we say,

  303. it was.

  304. And in the Greek,

  305. in the Hebrew,

  306. and particularly more

  307. in the Greek,

  308. the aspect that is used

  309. here in the tense

  310. is referring to something

  311. that is accomplished

  312. not necessarily simply

  313. by virtue of time

  314. but also by virtue of intent.

  315. And by the way,

  316. when God intends

  317. to do something,

  318. is it something

  319. that's still a question?

  320. What's the answer?

  321. No, not at all.

  322. So here is Jesus

  323. and he is hanging

  324. on the cross

  325. and he says,

  326. knowing that all

  327. was finished,

  328. he announces

  329. the statement,

  330. he takes first of all

  331. the wine

  332. to moisten his lips

  333. and then after he has

  334. had adequate refreshment

  335. or at least moisture

  336. so he can speak

  337. carefully,

  338. he says,

  339. it is finished.

  340. Now,

  341. John uses this exact

  342. same word,

  343. it is finished,

  344. earlier in the passage

  345. in a number of different

  346. places actually

  347. that John uses it

  348. but if you were to look

  349. at the first part,

  350. we're now in verse 30

  351. so recognize,

  352. Jesus here,

  353. he says,

  354. it is finished.

  355. Jesus had used

  356. that same Greek statement

  357. in 28.

  358. Some of you

  359. in your translations

  360. in 28 will have

  361. knowing that all

  362. was accomplished,

  363. right?

  364. How many of you

  365. have the word accomplished?

  366. It's another way

  367. in which it is translated.

  368. The word is

  369. tetelestai

  370. and it refers to the fact

  371. that that work

  372. had been done.

  373. In John chapter 7,

    John 7 chapter mention

  374. 17 rather,

  375. verse 4,

  376. we find Jesus

  377. in his prayer

  378. to the Father,

  379. remember,

  380. I've accomplished

  381. all the work

  382. that you've called me

  383. to do,

  384. I've done what you've asked.

  385. He used the same

  386. terminology

  387. to communicate

  388. the fact that

  389. even before the cross,

  390. he'd accomplished

  391. all that needed

  392. to be done.

  393. The Greek word

  394. was used

  395. in a number

  396. of different

  397. area,

  398. arenas.

  399. For one,

  400. it was used

  401. in business,

  402. it was used

  403. in accounting,

  404. accounting.

  405. It was also used

  406. in religious circles

  407. and it was a very

  408. common word,

  409. you find it

  410. in ancient

  411. vocabulary and text,

  412. that it was used

  413. in relationship

  414. to sacrifices.

  415. When the work

  416. was done,

  417. it was announcement

  418. that the matter

  419. had been completed

  420. or that the debt

  421. was paid in full.

  422. And so here is Jesus,

  423. even before his death,

  424. he is making the statement

  425. that he had accomplished

  426. all that God

  427. had sent him

  428. to do.

  429. I want you to understand

  430. that when he said,

  431. it is finished,

  432. it was not kind

  433. of the cry

  434. of a person

  435. who was despairing

  436. of what was taking

  437. place at all.

  438. It was a declaration,

  439. it was the announcement

  440. of a victor

  441. that the game,

  442. the matter,

  443. had been settled.

  444. I think it's pretty

  445. important to remember

  446. that.

  447. When we hear him say,

  448. it is finished,

  449. it is an absolute

  450. resonating

  451. declaration

  452. that we have

  453. the joy

  454. and certainty

  455. of our finished

  456. salvation as well.

  457. I want you to stop

  458. and realize

  459. that when he said

  460. this,

  461. he was referring

  462. to the broad scope

  463. of the plan

  464. of redemption.

  465. I want you to turn

  466. over,

  467. if you would,

  468. to Hebrews 10,

    Hebrews 10:14

  469. verse 14.

  470. Hebrews 10,

    Hebrews 10:14

  471. verse 14,

  472. as you think

  473. about what all

  474. had been accomplished

  475. on the cross.

  476. Hebrews 10,

    Hebrews 10:14

  477. verse 14.

  478. For by a single

  479. offering,

  480. he has perfected

  481. for all time

  482. those who are

  483. being sanctified.

  484. And the Holy Spirit

  485. also bears witness

  486. to us,

  487. for after saying,

  488. this is the covenant

  489. that I will make

  490. with them

  491. after those days,

  492. declared the Lord,

  493. I will put

  494. my law

  495. in their hearts

  496. and write them

  497. on their minds.

  498. Then he adds,

  499. I will remember

  500. their sins

  501. and their lawless

  502. deeds no more.

  503. Where there is

  504. forgiveness of these,

  505. there is no longer

  506. any offering

  507. for sin.

  508. I don't know about you,

  509. but I get cold chills,

  510. literally,

  511. reading that passage.

  512. Why?

  513. Because it is clear

  514. in the Scriptures

  515. that the work

  516. of Christ

  517. in our redemption

  518. is absolutely

  519. satisfied

  520. and concluded.

  521. The broken sinner

  522. who comes to faith

  523. in Christ

  524. has an eternal

  525. and irreversible

  526. salvation

  527. because Christ

  528. satisfied

  529. the guilt

  530. and shame

  531. or the penalty

  532. for my sins

  533. and he has given

  534. eternal salvation

  535. to all who believe

  536. in him.

  537. And so if you're

  538. sitting here

  539. this morning

  540. and you are

  541. genuinely the child

  542. of God,

  543. you have come

  544. to him by faith,

  545. you've confessed

  546. your sins,

  547. you've believed

  548. in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  549. you can say

  550. along with Jesus,

  551. it is finished.

  552. There's no question

  553. of how your story ends.

  554. I like that.

  555. I love that.

  556. And often when I am

  557. in communication

  558. with other people

  559. comes the opportunity

  560. of asking them

  561. that little practical

  562. question,

  563. and so God

  564. were to ask you

  565. how you should

  566. get into heaven

  567. or why he should

  568. let you in,

  569. I'm amazed at how

  570. often I hear people

  571. tell me,

  572. well,

  573. I'm hoping he will.

  574. I'm not positive

  575. but, you know,

  576. I'm hoping my good,

  577. hey, listen,

  578. Christ satisfied

  579. the judgment

  580. I deserved

  581. and I am resting

  582. in his finished work.

  583. Going back to

  584. John chapter 19,

    John 19 chapter mention

  585. I want you to pick up

  586. now and the remainder

  587. of what we find

  588. here in the text

  589. and look at

  590. verse 30.

  591. It says that

  592. after he'd received

  593. the sour wine,

  594. he says it is finished

  595. and he bowed his head

  596. and he gave up

  597. his spirit.

  598. Christ chose

  599. when he would die.

  600. Christ chose

  601. when he would die.

  602. Unless Jesus

  603. comes back first,

  604. every one of us here

  605. are going to die.

  606. It's a fact.

  607. Every one of us here

  608. are going to die.

  609. And apart from those

  610. who tragically

  611. choose to commit suicide,

  612. the rest of us

  613. are really not

  614. going to have much

  615. to do with the moment

  616. of our passing.

  617. Do you follow that?

  618. One thing or another,

  619. it's going to happen

  620. when it happens.

  621. In Job chapter 14,

    Job 14:5

  622. verse 5,

  623. it says this,

  624. since his days

  625. are determined

  626. and the number

  627. of his months

  628. is with you.

  629. The point that

  630. Scripture makes

  631. is this,

  632. is that God

  633. God is the one

  634. who chooses.

  635. Earlier in the book

  636. of Job,

  637. Job said this,

  638. the Lord gives

  639. and the Lord

  640. takes away.

  641. Blessed be the name

  642. of the Lord.

  643. When I die

  644. is not up to me.

  645. And I can tell you

  646. as a pastor

  647. of some 35 years,

  648. I've watched

  649. over the years

  650. individuals,

  651. particularly as they

  652. reach their older

  653. ages,

  654. they would like

  655. to go sooner.

  656. I mean,

  657. after all,

  658. remember what

  659. Paul said?

  660. To live is Christ,

  661. to die is what?

  662. It's good.

  663. I tell you,

  664. one of the more

  665. unnerving things

  666. I say to people

  667. that don't know me

  668. better,

  669. when they ask me

  670. how it's going,

  671. I say,

  672. any better

  673. than I'd be dead.

  674. It's like,

  675. oh no,

  676. really?

  677. Yeah,

  678. yeah.

  679. I tell you what,

  680. when I go up,

  681. it's going to be great.

  682. All of us

  683. have no real control

  684. over when we die.

  685. And I want you

  686. to recognize

  687. that when Jesus

  688. did what he did,

  689. Jesus chose

  690. the moment of his death

  691. and he made his deity

  692. absolutely clear.

  693. Look at the passage again.

  694. He bowed his head

  695. and gave up

  696. his spirit.

  697. When his work

  698. was done,

  699. he chose the moment

  700. that he would

  701. pass away.

  702. I want you to turn back

  703. just for a moment

  704. to John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  705. and we want to look

  706. at John chapter 10

    John 10:17

  707. verse 17 and 18.

  708. For this reason,

  709. the Father loves me

  710. because I lay down

  711. my life

  712. that I may take it up again.

  713. I lay down my life.

  714. Verse 18,

  715. no one takes it from me,

  716. but I lay it down

  717. of my own accord.

  718. I have authority

  719. to lay it down

  720. and I have authority

  721. to take it up.

  722. This charge

  723. I have received

  724. from my Father.

  725. I want you to stop

  726. and realize

  727. that his death

  728. for our sins

  729. was entirely voluntary.

  730. One thing

  731. that Jesus had said

  732. repeatedly

  733. to his disciples

  734. is that his death

  735. was going to be

  736. of his own choosing.

  737. It was something

  738. that he had determined

  739. beforehand

  740. to accomplish

  741. and the time

  742. and the way

  743. in which it all played out

  744. was something

  745. that was entirely

  746. according to God's plan

  747. and God being in control

  748. of it,

  749. Christ being God,

  750. happened according

  751. to his plan.

  752. You know,

  753. it's very interesting

  754. when you stop

  755. and think about

  756. how many times

  757. people wanted

  758. to kill Jesus

  759. and they didn't

  760. accomplish it.

  761. They wanted to do it.

  762. One time,

  763. remember,

  764. they took him

  765. up to the edge

  766. of a cliff,

  767. they were going

  768. to throw him off

  769. and what happened?

  770. Jesus just walked

  771. out between them,

  772. gone.

  773. And repeatedly,

  774. they planned for murder

  775. or whatever else

  776. and it didn't come about.

  777. And so here,

  778. Jesus makes it clear,

  779. the scripture makes it clear

  780. that Jesus died

  781. according to the plan

  782. that the Father,

  783. the Son,

  784. and the Holy Spirit had

  785. and he died exactly

  786. according to their own plan.

  787. I want you to recognize

  788. he chose to do it for us.

  789. Turn,

  790. you're there in John chapter 19,

    John 19 chapter mention

  791. keep your finger there

  792. for a moment

  793. but go if you would

  794. to Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  795. Look at Philippians chapter 2

    Philippians 2:7

  796. verse 7 and 8.

  797. Actually,

  798. let me pick up

  799. if I may

  800. in verse 5.

  801. Have this mind

  802. among yourselves

  803. that is yours

  804. in Christ Jesus

  805. who though

  806. he was in the form of God

  807. did not count equality

  808. with God

  809. a thing to be grasped

  810. but made himself

  811. of no reputation,

  812. made himself nothing,

  813. taking the form

  814. of a servant,

  815. being born in the likeness

  816. of men

  817. and being found

  818. in human form,

  819. he humbled himself

  820. by becoming obedient

  821. to the point of death,

  822. even death on the cross.

  823. Remember when Pilate,

  824. earlier in John,

  825. was a little irritated

  826. that Jesus

  827. wasn't responding

  828. as Pilate

  829. thought he should

  830. and he let him know,

  831. don't you know

  832. I have the power

  833. to crucify you

  834. or to let you go

  835. and what was Jesus'

  836. response?

  837. Hey,

  838. nah.

  839. This is something

  840. that you've been given

  841. the ability to do

  842. and were it not

  843. for the plan of God,

  844. in essence,

  845. this would not take place

  846. and earlier,

  847. Jesus had made it

  848. had made it clear

  849. that if this matter,

  850. if this was a matter

  851. of my kingdom,

  852. my subjects,

  853. my servants would fight

  854. and I can call

  855. legions of angels

  856. to accomplish

  857. the deliverance

  858. that I would need

  859. if that was my plan.

  860. So here we are,

  861. we recognize

  862. that Jesus chose

  863. the moment of his death

  864. and I want you

  865. to realize this morning

  866. that when you stop

  867. and meditate

  868. upon what Jesus did,

  869. I want you to understand

  870. he chose to die

  871. in your place.

  872. Let me ask you a question,

  873. how can I be warm

  874. and indifferent

  875. to that issue?

  876. Do you follow that?

  877. You deserving to die

  878. for your sins,

  879. God was willing

  880. to send his son

  881. and his son

  882. was willing to die

  883. in your place.

  884. Thoughtfulness

  885. about the reality

  886. of what Christ

  887. has done for us

  888. invariably

  889. warms our heart

  890. and causes us

  891. to love him more.

  892. Let me come

  893. to one other thing

  894. that's very interesting

  895. actually in John.

  896. You pick up there

  897. if you will

  898. as we work

  899. our way through

  900. in verse 31.

  901. Since it was

  902. the day of preparation

  903. so that the bodies

  904. would not remain

  905. on the cross

  906. on the Sabbath

  907. for the Sabbath

  908. was a high day

  909. the Jews asked Pilate

  910. that their legs

  911. might be broken

  912. that they might

  913. be taken away.

  914. John actually

  915. spends considerably

  916. more time

  917. dealing with this issue

  918. of the authenticity

  919. of the veracity

  920. of the death

  921. of Christ

  922. than he actually

  923. deals with the fact

  924. that he died.

  925. Pretty interesting.

  926. We find that his death

  927. is confirmed

  928. very clearly.

  929. John dedicated

  930. seven verses

  931. to giving us

  932. a detailed look

  933. at our Savior's death.

  934. In one sense

  935. he spent more time

  936. on helping us

  937. understand the facts

  938. of his death

  939. than he actually did

  940. on what happened

  941. at the crucifixion.

  942. That's not an accident

  943. and it deserves

  944. our attention.

  945. You ask yourself

  946. why is it there?

  947. Why is that much text

  948. given to the subject

  949. and what's its significance?

  950. I am struck

  951. for a moment

  952. by the absolute

  953. cruel hypocrisy

  954. of the Jewish leaders.

  955. They had no problem

  956. with a completely

  957. trumped up judgment.

  958. They had no problem

  959. lying about Jesus.

  960. They had no problem

  961. in hatred

  962. desiring his execution.

  963. They had no problem

  964. with all of the wickedness

  965. of their heart

  966. but when it came

  967. to this business

  968. of Jesus hanging

  969. on the cross

  970. past sundown

  971. they really went off

  972. on the Old Testament law.

  973. Stop just for a minute.

  974. How many of you realize

  975. that your hypocrisy

  976. and my hypocrisy

  977. when it displays itself

  978. has righteous indignation

  979. in very narrow bands

  980. of appointment?

  981. Do you follow that?

  982. Oh we get righteously

  983. indignant about A, B, C

  984. but the rest of the issues

  985. in our life

  986. we're not so troubled by.

  987. Here were the Pharisees.

  988. Here were the scribes.

  989. Here were the religious leaders.

  990. And they were all about

  991. what it had to say

  992. in Deuteronomy chapter 21

    Deuteronomy 21:22

  993. verse 22 and 3

  994. where a man who was executed

  995. was not to hang

  996. on the tree

  997. beyond sundown.

  998. Get him down.

  999. So do you know

  1000. how they wanted

  1001. that accomplished?

  1002. Look at the passage.

  1003. They come to Pilate

1004. and ask that their legs

  1005. might be broken

1006. that they might be taken away.

1007. Kind of a subtle way of saying

1008. we want you to take

  1009. a large club

1010. and smash their shin bones

  1011. so that they cannot

  1012. bear their weight

  1013. and as a result

  1014. they die quicker.

1015. They don't suffer any less.

1016. In fact in some senses

1017. they suffer a little bit more.

  1018. Their suffering

  1019. is not as long.

1020. And as you look at this

  1021. you find that

  1022. here they were

  1023. asking that Pilate

  1024. would have soldiers

  1025. go out

1026. and take this large club

  1027. and smash the legs

1028. and shatter the shin bones

1029. or I doubt the femur.

1030. No one seems to indicate that.

  1031. But that way

  1032. they would die quicker.

  1033. That was very merciful

  1034. wasn't it?

  1035. I mean something

  1036. about that.

1037. Just have your shin bones

  1038. crushed by an absolute

  1039. giant club.

  1040. You die quickly.

  1041. Here they are.

  1042. Oh their righteousness

1043. they don't want these guys

  1044. hanging too long

  1045. and you know

  1046. so what happens?

  1047. You look there

  1048. it says

  1049. so the soldiers

  1050. came and broke

1051. the legs of the first

  1052. and of the other

  1053. who had been crucified

  1054. with him

  1055. and when they came

  1056. to Jesus

  1057. verse 33

1058. and saw that he was

  1059. already dead

1060. they did not break his legs.

1061. Now if you were to go

  1062. to one of the

  1063. synoptic gospels

1064. I believe it is Mark

  1065. when the report

  1066. comes back to Pilate

  1067. from one of the

  1068. common soldiers

  1069. hey

  1070. Jesus is dead.

  1071. he doesn't buy it

  1072. and he makes

  1073. a centurion

  1074. double check

  1075. the fact.

  1076. Now by the way

  1077. in Roman

  1078. military

  1079. decorum

  1080. if you ask

  1081. a centurion

  1082. to verify it

  1083. and it came back

1084. and he didn't get you

  1085. the accurate facts

  1086. guess what the

  1087. consequences were?

  1088. Not pretty.

  1089. So here's the centurion

  1090. double checking

  1091. and he says

  1092. yeah he's dead

  1093. and by the way

  1094. how do we know

  1095. he died?

  1096. He was already dead.

  1097. You look there

  1098. in the passage

1099. but one of the soldiers

  1100. pierced his side

  1101. with a spear

  1102. and at once

  1103. there came out

  1104. blood and water.

  1105. It's interesting

  1106. that Christ's death

  1107. was confirmed

  1108. by a spear thrust.

  1109. I'm not talking

  1110. about just tapping

  1111. on his body

1112. to see if he responded.

1113. It was a spear thrust

  1114. thrust up into his

  1115. chest cavity

  1116. up into his heart

  1117. probably

  1118. and when that

  1119. happened

  1120. out came

  1121. blood and water.

  1122. Now I don't want to

  1123. it's very interesting

  1124. when the scripture

  1125. doesn't give you

  1126. the exact fact

  1127. one of the things

  1128. that sometimes

  1129. happens in

  1130. commentaries

  1131. is people

  1132. go off

  1133. on speculation

  1134. about

  1135. what does that

  1136. really mean?

1137. I got to tell you

  1138. there are

  1139. at least probably

  1140. two different

  1141. medical theories

  1142. about what the

  1143. blood and water

  1144. are referenced to

  1145. but the scripture

  1146. suffice it to say

  1147. we know

  1148. Jesus

  1149. was dead.

  1150. So ask yourself

  1151. the question

  1152. is it important

  1153. that Jesus

  1154. actually died?

  1155. How many of you

  1156. have friends

  1157. that are Muslims?

  1158. Let's try this

  1159. how many of you

  1160. know people

  1161. that are Muslims?

  1162. How many of you

  1163. know that the

  1164. Muslims believe

  1165. that Jesus

  1166. actually didn't

  1167. die on the cross?

  1168. Pretty significant.

  1169. How do we know

  1170. that Jesus died?

  1171. Well a soldier

  1172. took a spear

  1173. and thrust it

  1174. up into his

  1175. chest cavity

  1176. and out came

  1177. blood and water.

  1178. What's the

  1179. significance of that?

  1180. I want you to

  1181. look in your

  1182. Bibles now

  1183. you're there in

  1184. John but I want

  1185. you to turn over

  1186. if you would

  1187. to Romans

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  1188. chapter 6

  1189. Romans chapter 6

    Romans 6:23

  1190. verse 23

  1191. here's what we

  1192. know

  1193. is the reason

  1194. that Jesus

  1195. died for us

  1196. for the wages

  1197. of sin

  1198. is death

  1199. but the free

  1200. gift of God

  1201. is eternal life

  1202. through Jesus

  1203. Christ our Lord.

  1204. Let's get this

  1205. clear

  1206. Jesus died

  1207. to pay the

  1208. penalty

  1209. for my sins

  1210. Jesus died

  1211. to pay the

  1212. penalty

  1213. for my sins

  1214. Jesus died

  1215. for our sins

  1216. to satisfy

  1217. the judgment

  1218. of God

  1219. against sin

  1220. furthermore

  1221. he died

  1222. to satisfy

  1223. the righteous

  1224. judgment

  1225. of God

  1226. against sin

  1227. that God

  1228. had deferred

  1229. or he had not

  1230. dealt with

  1231. immediately.

  1232. Turn back

  1233. if you would

  1234. to Romans

    Romans 3:25

  1235. chapter 3

  1236. verse 25

  1237. and 26

  1238. whom God

  1239. put forward

  1240. what's that

  1241. saying

  1242. God took

  1243. his son

  1244. and moved

  1245. him to that

  1246. center point

  1247. of the issues

  1248. of all of life

  1249. and eternity

  1250. and God put

  1251. his son on

  1252. the cross

  1253. why

  1254. as propitiation

  1255. by his blood

  1256. to be received

  1257. by faith

  1258. this is to show

  1259. God's righteousness

  1260. because in his

  1261. divine forbearance

  1262. he had passed

  1263. over former

  1264. sins

  1265. are you not

  1266. glad that God

  1267. delayed his

  1268. judgment

  1269. of you

  1270. for your sins

  1271. are you not

  1272. glad for that

  1273. he could have

  1274. judged you

  1275. immediately

  1276. on the moment

  1277. of the first

  1278. sin that you

  1279. committed

  1280. and where would

  1281. you have spent

  1282. eternity

  1283. condemned for

  1284. all eternity

  1285. do the angels

  1286. understand God

  1287. being forbearance

  1288. forbearing in

  1289. relationship to sin

  1290. the answer is no

  1291. not at all

  1292. but God

  1293. was patient

  1294. and he

  1295. was forbearing

  1296. and he did not

  1297. judge our sins

  1298. immediately

  1299. but he had

  1300. Jesus come to

  1301. be our

  1302. substitute

  1303. Jesus died

  1304. for our sins

  1305. because God

  1306. had been patiently

  1307. waiting to deal

  1308. with our sins

  1309. and how did he

  1310. deal with them

  1311. by having Jesus

  1312. die in

  1313. our place

  1314. here's the

  1315. wonderful fact

  1316. that just

  1317. flows out of

  1318. this passage

  1319. God was

  1320. willing to

  1321. send his

  1322. son the

  1323. Lord Jesus

  1324. Christ to

  1325. pay the

  1326. penalty for

  1327. our sins

  1328. upon the

  1329. cross

  1330. to offer

  1331. salvation and

  1332. complete forgiveness

  1333. to all who will

  1334. repent and believe

  1335. in the Lord Jesus

  1336. Christ

  1337. and so the

  1338. practical question

  1339. is this

  1340. this morning

  1341. number one

  1342. have you come to

  1343. the place where

  1344. the spirit of

  1345. God has been

  1346. convicting you

  1347. of the reality

  1348. that you deserve

  1349. the eternal

  1350. judgment of God

  1351. for the sin

  1352. of your life

  1353. and if you have

  1354. come to that

  1355. point the

  1356. question is this

  1357. have you believed

  1358. on the Lord Jesus

  1359. Christ in whom

  1360. alone is salvation

  1361. and complete

  1362. forgiveness

  1363. there is a fact

  1364. it says in the

  1365. scriptures that

  1366. appointed unto man

  1367. once to die

  1368. and after that

  1369. the judgment

  1370. if you're sitting

  1371. here today

  1372. and you have

  1373. not come to

  1374. the point

  1375. where you have

  1376. recognized

  1377. your sin

  1378. I would ask

  1379. you do you

  1380. need any more

  1381. empirical evidence

  1382. or do you need

  1383. any more

  1384. practical evidence

  1385. to convince you

  1386. that you have

  1387. a dark and

  1388. nasty heart

  1389. if you do

  1390. not need

  1391. any more

  1392. evidence

  1393. the practical

  1394. question that

  1395. follows is this

  1396. is have you

  1397. come to the

  1398. place where you

  1399. have cast

  1400. yourself upon

  1401. the mercy of

  1402. Christ and you

  1403. have asked him

  1404. to forgive you

  1405. and to be your

  1406. savior

  1407. here's the

  1408. truth

  1409. Jesus died

  1410. for your sins

  1411. and it is

  1412. unconscionable

  1413. it is extremely

  1414. offensive to

  1415. God

  1416. for us who

  1417. know the

  1418. darkness of our

  1419. own heart

  1420. to be indifferent

  1421. to the penalty

  1422. that sin brings

  1423. because God

  1424. sent his son

  1425. to be

  1426. our savior

  1427. and to say

  1428. I'm not

  1429. interested

  1430. is pretty

  1431. irritating

  1432. by the way

  1433. God will

  1434. delay his

  1435. judgment

  1436. but I want

  1437. to assure you

  1438. of this

  1439. to be

  1440. indifferent

  1441. to his

  1442. offer

  1443. will ultimately

  1444. if you

  1445. refuse his

  1446. gift

  1447. will amplify

  1448. the consequence

  1449. of his

  1450. judgment

  1451. against you

  1452. and I would

  1453. plead with you

  1454. as it says

  1455. in 2nd Corinthians

  1456. be reconciled

  1457. to God

  1458. now

  1459. let's close

  1460. in prayer

  1461. our father

  1462. God this

  1463. morning we are

  1464. thankful for the

  1465. work that the

  1466. Lord Jesus Christ

  1467. did on our

  1468. behalf

  1469. that he

  1470. willingly came

  1471. to be the

  1472. sacrifice for our

  1473. sin

  1474. and that all

  1475. who believe in

  1476. him may have

  1477. complete forgiveness

  1478. and redemption

  1479. in his

  1480. blood

  1481. I pray for those

  1482. who are here today

  1483. that know the

  1484. Lord Jesus Christ

  1485. that this morning

  1486. as they consider

  1487. what Jesus has

  1488. done for them

  1489. that their hearts

  1490. would be lifted up

  1491. and they would

  1492. delight in him

  1493. and look forward

  1494. to the day

  1495. that they will

  1496. see him

  1497. let that be

  1498. something that

  1499. stirs our heart

  1500. to delight

  1501. and satisfaction

  1502. in the Lord

  1503. Jesus Christ

  1504. and I pray for

  1505. those that are

  1506. here today

  1507. that do not

  1508. know Christ

  1509. that even today

  1510. your spirit

  1511. would be working

  1512. even as we

  1513. come to a close

  1514. of this service

  1515. drawing them

  1516. to the cross

  1517. to believing

  1518. in the Lord

  1519. Jesus Christ

  1520. and faith

  1521. in his finished

  1522. work

  1523. we ask this

  1524. in Jesus name

  1525. amen
