It's my turn today to tell the old story.
-
Turn to Hebrews chapter 2.
Hebrews 2 chapter mention
-
It's interesting.
-
I mean, we all we've been told stuff.
-
You've listened to stories all your life, right?
-
I mean, it's one of the things I remember when I was a kid being told very stories and and the stuff.
-
It's amazing at times how you you'll hear a story you've been told forever, and then you realize, dude, I don't remember that part of it.
-
Right?
-
Hey, I don't I don't remember that.
-
And as we had begun through Hebrews, and Brother Rod picked at me.
-
I picked at him.
-
I told him he better not change his mind when he had announced he was gonna preach through Hebrews because I bought a lot of mess to study along with him.
-
And I did.
-
I don't a small we added to the library pretty good at the house, just for Hebrews.
-
And as I have read along and I'd read all the various things, just reading scripture, a word, just leaps out or leapt out at me like.
-
Things aren't right.
-
And then he said, and what Ron was finishing or attempting to finish last week.
-
But we see Jesus.
-
But we see Jesus.
-
And today we really get to see Jesus.
-
Hebrews chapter 2, verse 10, if you would stand.
-
We're going to read chapter 10 or verse 10 through the end of the chapter.
-
For it was fitting for him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings, for both he who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, I will declare your name to my brethren in the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to you, and again I will put my trust in him, and again, here am I and the children whom God has given me.
-
Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared in the same, that through death he might destroy him who had the power of death, that is the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
-
For indeed he does not give aid to angels, but he does give aid to the seed of Abraham.
-
Therefore in all things he had to be made like his brethren that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God to make propitiation for the sins of the people, for in that he himself has suffered, being tempted.
-
He is able to aid those who are tempted.
-
Father, we're thankful today that Jesus indeed suffered for us.
-
Lord, it's amazing the depth of all that really means.
-
Help us today to see you more clearly again.
-
Christ's name, amen.
-
When you read, as you read through this and you you read in, and I have in times past uh looked at the very end of the book of Hebrews, and I'd read the whole book to get up to that.
-
And the writer of Hebrews is it's it's really interesting.
-
Uh he's an attorney who makes good arguments.
-
You know, it's it reads because I have before listened to the book of Hebrews being read in the car when I'm going down the road.
-
Uh that's one of the wonderful things out there available to us.
-
It don't cost you a nickel.
-
I mean, all technologies, there's a lot of weird and stuff done with, and I don't look, I'm old enough to not have a clue and young enough to play with it some.
-
But there's a lot of stuff out there I don't get.
-
But it's really neat to be some of the things you can do, and you can read or you can have the Bible read to you when you're driving.
-
And it's I like listening to talking when I drive, and sometimes I've done that, and it's really neat to listen to, and you you get to you get a feel for it sometimes more uh listening to the it sounds almost like an a lawyer making arguments through the book of Hebrews.
-
And uh I do I like that.
-
But when you get here and and as I was reading again through this, the author says it was fitting for him for this to happen.
-
Fitting for Christ to suffer.
-
It was fitting.
-
I might have understood necessary.
-
Right?
-
I might have under, you know, he had to do this, he had to, but it said it was fitting for him.
-
And that's just and it struck me.
-
Like never thought of it quite like that.
-
It was fitting.
-
Uh we were talking in Sunday school class this morning about that word.
-
Uh it was fitting.
-
We have various times through things, we'll have different occasions that arise for us.
-
And when occasions arise, you know, for me, I'm just I'll dig around the closet.
-
I'm looking for something that's appropriate, you know, to put on or whatever.
-
It's always interesting for me when something's coming up.
-
Mandy will go to the she'll go to the various things.
-
She's looking for a blouse, she's looking for a shirt, something for this occasion.
-
You know, and I'm a fella, I don't get all that stuff.
-
But you know what, it's okay.
-
But I mean, she'll go and she'll say, I found something to wear to this.
-
You know, I wanted, you know, I could open the closet door and say, I found a whole bunch of stuff that we already had.
-
But but she'll she'll be looking for something that's just right for some occasion.
-
I've got to go to this, I've got to do here.
-
She'll find this or that.
-
We'll go, or and she'll find something that's just so appropriate, right?
-
It just, you know, not only does it fit, but it's appropriate.
-
She went to a gala last week.
-
She and I didn't have to go, and that was a blessing.
-
But and beforehand, she went and she's looking for a shirt for the gala.
-
Because, you know, she wanted to be comfortable, but she wanted it to be, you know, be the right color, the right this, and all that.
-
And she comes and she says, I found the thing.
-
You know, it's it's appropriate, you know, it's appropriate to wear it.
-
It's fitting.
-
Even this morning, I was thinking earlier, end of the week.
-
It's like, dude, I gotta dress a little different Sunday morning because I gotta stand up here rather than being up there in the crow's nest.
-
Way it's way easier up there in the crow's nest.
-
Dude, I can hide in there.
-
Y'all don't know what's going on.
-
And I said, you know, I think I got a white shirt and a coat, and that seems appropriate enough.
-
It's appropriate.
-
It's fitting.
-
The writer here says it was fitting for him to suffer.
-
It was fitting.
-
It was appropriate.
-
It it was it was it it just it was the right thing.
-
Not only was it the right thing, it fit who his character is, it fit who he is for him to suffer.
-
And dude, that just that got on me.
-
It was it was it was the right deal.
-
God, God in his plan says it's appropriate, it's the right thing for him to suffer.
-
For whom to suffer?
-
The one who made all things.
-
So what it says here.
-
It was fitting for him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things.
-
And it wasn't effort.
-
I mean, in times past, I've Mandy used to laugh when I'd, you know, I'd work and I'd made, I've made things.
-
I'd have a little something I'd want, and I'd put together, I'd find, and I never most of my making of things does not involve going to the lumber yard.
-
It involves digging around and look things that have fallen apart, you know, and I'm a terrible hoarder of all things, but anything like dude, you get wood, and you just put stuff together, right?
-
And I work to build, you know, and I've made stuff.
-
I've been happy as a lark with horrible, you know, nothing square about nothing.
-
A little rickety.
-
But you know, I've but and when I was through, you know, there was it's effort.
-
It's dry this fall, and and we're just but dude, the briars.
-
I did a little cleaning up.
-
I'm on deer hunt.
-
Not much, not as much this year, but some.
-
When I did some cleaning up and I cleaned up with a weed eater and a hedge trimmer.
-
It's amazing what you can do with a hedge trimmer and weed eater.
-
And the briars.
-
I mean, I come in and it's I'm mostly healed up now.
-
But I mean I looked like I'd been in a fight with a cat, right?
-
And the cat won.
-
Real big.
-
Just beat up all over and cut, and I mean, I mean, there wasn't I mean my nose was bloody.
-
Just everything, and and I'm not gonna lie, when I got through, hot, you know, it's one of them where you don't put them them clothes in the in the laundry, they stay on their own on the floor and go straight to the washing machine, right?
-
Effort.
-
Effort to just clean out a little hole.
-
Effort.
-
The one who suffered made all things.
-
It wasn't no effort.
-
He spoke.
-
There it was.
-
And it isn't, I mean, and we don't, we don't, we don't catch on to how vast and how wonderful creation is.
-
We're still studying.
-
That's one of the wonderful one of the neat things about education is you go, if you look at it right, you can go and just see the value just the enormity of creation.
-
Now they may won't try to teach you wrong about it, but you can get pictures of the enormity of creation and the intricacy of creation.
-
When you take small things and just break them down, and you realize, like, dude, if we pulled you apart and strode your mess out that you were made up, it just there's so much.
-
Now, I don't plan on pulling none of us apart up here this morning to show, but can you imagine just all the stuff that one person's put together?
-
He made all that.
-
And not only did he make it all, he made it all for himself.
-
It was for him.
-
And yet it was fitting that he suffered.
-
That's hard to grab a hold of, isn't it?
-
It says it was fitting for him to suffer.
-
It was fitting for the and it depends on the translation you use, and I like them all.
-
You can for the captain of their salvation, for the author of their salvation.
-
It'd be I've I've read of like a leader.
-
It's very much like back in history class, uh, when you'd hear of the explorers, right?
-
Going around the world, conquering stuff.
-
Dude, Monday.
-
Miss Sarah, you get off Monday, don't you?
-
No.
-
Oh, I'm sorry.
-
Let's fix bank holiday for one of them explorers.
-
Not for Miss Sarah.
-
He'd go.
-
But you think of the explorers that would go into new places and you know, and they'd go and find that's what this the captain of our salvation, that's kind of what it the first one through.
-
I mean, and that's what that that word is.
-
It was he went through first.
-
He led the way.
-
And to bring many sons to glory, it was fitting, it was appropriate, it was the right thing, and it fits into who God is for him to suffer.
-
And boy, that's hard.
-
That's that's hard for me.
-
Because because I know me, right?
-
You know you.
-
You know enough about you to know you ain't worth suffering for.
-
That's right, isn't it, Brother Fred?
-
I love you.
-
Great dude.
-
One of my favorite folks, Brother Fred.
-
But he'd admit he ain't worth suffering for.
-
Especially not God Almighty suffering for you.
-
He ain't worth that.
-
And yet it was fitting for him to suffer for you.
-
It says for him to do that.
-
The verse says to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
-
And that's and there's another that board gets you his life.
-
What?
-
Wait a minute.
-
He didn't don't make bones about, don't, don't confuse things here.
-
He was perfect.
-
And he didn't like there's this Jesus was close but needed this little bit.
-
However, it completed the work.
-
Suffering is what completed the work.
-
Suffering is is what made him able to do more.
-
And he he he gets further into that earlier, later in the passage.
-
He went all the way through.
-
He completed, he had to do that.
-
He had to suffer to finish the job.
-
To perfect our captain.
-
For which reason he is not ashamed to call them brethren.
-
Why didn't he do it?
-
It to perfect our author, our captain, our our leader.
-
It's he completed the work.
-
It's so able, he was able to adopt us in.
-
That's a good thing.
-
We get we joke, I'll joke with people that come in to the office and and and we'll joke with other folks.
-
You know, somebody comes in and you'll you'll know of somebody that has a lot of lot of financial uh blessings.
-
Right?
-
They have a lot of abilities to go do stuff, you know, and they're maybe they're here or they're doing something, and we get a bit jealous.
-
We just we do.
-
It's like we get a little envious of something, or it's like, dead gun that'd be fun, and and you'll you'll pick, and and we've all done it at times.
-
It's like I I have said to folks, you know, ask them, do they need another son?
-
Hey dude, I ain't too old to be adopted, but hey, by any of you.
-
I'm not, and we we can we can tell we can change, I can change names every direction.
-
That courthouse will handle it.
-
But we'll pick at that somebody that that has those those things, and they'll go and do.
-
I'm a half beginning to wonder if my best buddy up in North Arkansas maybe I ought to ask him.
-
I mean, he's some of his adventures lately have been really neat.
-
But we'll pick about those to be adopted into that family.
-
Or maybe it's just maybe it's just a great doggone family.
-
It's like, man, I'd love to be adopted.
-
They may not be blessed with some, but man, it's just the system, the family, the support that's there.
-
Man, I'd like to be part of that, adopted in.
-
He suffered that we could be.
-
Right now, and I mean I'll I'll pick and about with people about boy be fun, so I could go whatever.
-
It'd be fun, so I'd be part of that thing.
-
And they may be decent enough stuff.
-
But Jesus suffered so we could be adopted into the best.
-
It says also it was a it was fitting, it was appropriate for him to suffer that he might conquer what we couldn't conquer.
-
It's just he might be the conquer the one who has the power over death.
-
Now, that doesn't mean that the devil controls when you die.
-
But the devil does influence sin in life.
-
Influences it, right?
-
And what causes death?
-
Sin.
-
Why, why, why do we see what we see around?
-
We have ones that are near to us, and we watch illness.
-
We watch people hurt.
-
We watch people, we watch people go down.
-
Man.
-
Painful.
-
And then we'll see things that are just tragic on folks that aren't old.
-
They didn't just go down.
-
They were taking literally, it seems like in the blink of an eye.
-
Tragic stuff.
-
Both tragic.
-
All in their own way.
-
Why?
-
Because sin in the world.
-
Because, dude, that's hope of who we all are.
-
No matter how no matter how good folks seem, we ain't.
-
Now the Bible says some worse than others, but we all a mess.
-
We're all infected fully.
-
And he conquered that.
-
He might destroy him who had the power of death, that that is the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
-
Isn't that a good description of this world?
-
Folks in bondage fear in the end.
-
It's a great design.
-
I mean, we we get all.
-
And why why do they why do they fear the end?
-
Because dude folks just don't know.
-
I mean, they're they just ain't there people aren't sure, and it affects.
-
When you're truly confident that this isn't it, you're a little more free right now, aren't you?
-
Right?
-
This isn't it, and it's like I'm truly confident God's got better waiting for me.
-
It's a lot better.
-
Now, don't make this easy, but it's easier to deal with.
-
Can you imagine?
-
Be somewhere good with hard things going on.
-
Be somewhere bad.
-
Grow up in some of the places I've gotten a seed, man.
-
How would you like to live in that and think this is as good as it's as good as it gets?
-
No hope for anything.
-
And I mean, you can you can see that on the other side of the world, you can see that across the street.
-
No hope, mourning hard, something hard and difficult, and no real hope for a future, and think this is as good as it is.
-
It ain't no wonder the pharmacists are busy.
-
Dude, if you have no, if if if you're that way and you have no hope for any of that, I mean, truly, the author is a wonderfully worded here.
-
You're living in bondage.
-
Right?
-
And he said, Man, I've come to rescue, to free.
-
I conquered and freed those who were in bondage.
-
And that's us.
-
That's us living in bondage.
-
For indeed, he does not give aid to angels, but he does give aid to the seed of Abraham.
-
And that's a wonderful, that's that's really interesting.
-
He he said, look, man, because you know, we've we've we've spent several weeks now discussing angels versus Jesus and you know how they are in the angels versus our perception and the popular perceptions of angels in the world and how they're portrayed in cartoons, how they're portrayed and all kind of stuff.
-
It's like, dude, Jesus didn't, he didn't stoop down for them.
-
He stooped down for us.
-
He didn't die for them.
-
He died for us.
-
Verse 17, therefore, in all things he had to be made like his brethren.
-
We talked about this in Sunday school a bit today, too.
-
He had to be made like his brethren.
-
It's one of those things I can't wrap my my mind around fully.
-
He's God.
-
Jesus is God, period.
-
He's man.
-
Period.
-
Hundred percent of each.
-
I mean, we talked about, you know, and it and all of that fits in his plans.
-
All of it fits.
-
It's like we were talking about the woman at the well.
-
You know, why was he there?
-
I mean, he had a plan.
-
He's gonna meet that woman there.
-
But as part of that plan was things that went on.
-
Why was he there?
-
Dude, he's walking that way.
-
And he's tired, he's thirsty, and he's hungry.
-
And he sat down there to rest and wait on something to eat.
-
I can identify with that.
-
Yesterday Mandy took Mandy to uh Jefferson, Texas.
-
That's Mandy's favorite town, I think, in America.
-
I did not realize that in Jefferson, Texas, yesterday was a uh a motorcycle rally.
-
There were lots of motorcycles in Jefferson.
-
Dude, streets blocked off, three wide biggons parked across the street, as far as you could see, both directions and multiple streets like that.
-
And then on other streets, they just parked here and I mean, and loud.
-
They cranked one of them up as Mandy and I were leaving.
-
We were walking back to the truck at the end, and they cranked one of them up, and I likened to have had a heart attack.
-
I wasn't expecting it, and that one had plenty to crank up.
-
There, everywhere.
-
And people, I mean, it's that's a busy little place to move.
-
Good night.
-
The fire ants were out yesterday.
-
Airwork.
-
And I'm following Mandy Ram from place to place, and she's she's looking at all for the precious things that we didn't know we needed, right?
-
I'm looking for I I found stuff too.
-
But it's just a mess and crowd.
-
I'm thinking, I'm planning in my mind.
-
And I we just kind of went going past through lunch, keeping looking for stuff.
-
A little bit later, I said, we kind of got and she I had a handful of stuff to tote, but then I said, we're gonna go back to the truck and unload, you know, and then figure from there.
-
And then it was time to find something to eat because I had done become unfull.
-
And it was time for me to go.
-
And I said, What do you want?
-
And and we sat and it was a good time.
-
We found they'd they cleared out a lot of the places, and we were able to go eat our cornbread sandwich because that's what we do when we go to Jefferson, Texas, have a cornbread sandwich.
-
If you've never had one, go and eat a cornbread sandwich.
-
I don't can't explain it.
-
It's it's phenomenal.
-
But I had my cornbread sandwich and piece of pie.
-
Mandy had her cornbread sandwich and dumplings and a piece of pie, and it was good.
-
But you know, I was ready for that.
-
Dude, I ate her down.
-
I was hungry.
-
Jesus was at that well, dude.
-
He had done, he'd hit that point.
-
He'd been through that.
-
We don't think about that.
-
Feet hurt, you know, wandering around there on them things and trying to duck all the peoples and through, and it's loud and stuff, and you get tired and he did that.
-
He was that.
-
Brother Cole brought up a good point.
-
Can you imagine all the stuff that that Jesus dealt with?
-
Because it is constant.
-
Even amongst his little core group, it was constant, right?
-
He had to be made like his brethren.
-
When you get tired, realize he got tired.
-
When you get really unhungr, unfull.
-
Remember, he he got that way.
-
Therefore, he had to be made like his brethren.
-
Why?
-
That he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God.
-
He knows where we've been.
-
He stands up for you.
-
Why?
-
He knows what you're doing, he knows what you're going through.
-
He's been made perfect through it.
-
He's been through it.
-
He can be a better high priest because he suffered.
-
It's what verse 18 says.
-
Why?
-
He in that he himself has suffered being tempted, he is able to aid those who are tempted.
-
He's been there.
-
God really knows.
-
When people say, well, God knows, yes.
-
No, he really knows.
-
You've been rejected by folks?
-
He really knows.
-
I mean, he sat and he said, Man, don't.
-
And they, I mean, the closest to him ran.
-
At the end, they ran.
-
Those who didn't run denied him.
-
He knows.
-
You've been stressed out?
-
Have you ever sweated great drops of blood?
-
He knows.
-
He can be a faithful high priest because he's been there.
-
It says he did all those things to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
-
There's something to think about.
-
I've been suffering about this before I read it, heard it somewhere, thinking.
-
Think of that.
-
What's that?
-
That's a big word.
-
What's it mean?
-
It means he paid your debt.
-
It means at the end he said to talest I when he was on the cross.
-
And that's a word you say, Greg.
-
I have less clue what it means in the first one.
-
It means paid.
-
Paid in full.
-
It's finished.
-
Talesty.
-
It's finished.
-
And that it's very much like when they give you the receipt, then he'd go to a store.
-
She'd hand me the thing she wanted.
-
She'd walk out of the store.
-
I'd pay for them, or they put them in a bag.
-
They'd hand me a receipt.
-
So she could tote them home.
-
Why?
-
Because it was paid in full.
-
That's what that means.
-
Only it's it's huge.
-
He could say that he could make propitiation for the sins of the people, and it's paid in full.
-
Now think of this.
-
Think of you.
-
Just okay.
-
Think of you.
-
Think of all, not just right, think of your sins.
-
And do we think of them as little hiccups?
-
No, think of them as what they really are sins against the holy God.
-
Think of your lifetime of mess that you've done.
-
Think of if you had to pay for them.
-
And there will be many that do have to pay for their own sins.
-
And an eternity of suffering is what it doesn't do it.
-
There isn't like there are times I I'll go as kids, as whatever, husbands, wives, there's certain things we all have to suffer through.
-
I have to go to this because somebody wants me to.
-
But I know sometimes Emmanuel look, she went to a ball game or something with me, and I'm watching, she's wanting to do something else, and she and I can point.
-
I said, that clock will get to zero, right?
-
And we'll be done.
-
You will have suffered through the game fully, and we go do something else.
-
It never strikes zero if you're paying for your own sins.
-
Right?
-
That's just yours.
-
Jesus in them hours, they beat the tar out of him.
-
Yes.
-
They did all those.
-
But God's punishment that you could not pay for in an eternity of being punished.
-
He took on yours, not just yours.
-
He took them all on in them ours and paid for them.
-
We don't have a clue.
-
We don't have a clue.
-
He took man's punishment on the cross.
-
He did.
-
He took he took all that folks could deal out to him.
-
But he took God's punishment.
-
Right?
-
At the same time.
-
And the Bible says it was fitting for him to do that.
-
It was fitting.
-
It fits who he is.
-
It's appropriate.
-
Why?
-
Man, he's a merciful God.
-
Fitting.
-
For God to pay my punishment.
-
And it says, because of all that, because of all that, he ain't scared to call us brethren.
-
He ain't scared to call us brethren.
-
And how are we, brethren?
-
Because all he did.
-
Amen.
-
It isn't like he's he's he's he's happy to call us brethren because we brought this to the table.
-
No, we ain't nothing.
-
It's just it's all him.
-
And it in reality, it's fitting.
-
That he would do all that to bring us in, and it fits who God is.
-
That he could, that he could keep all his stuff together.
-
He could be holy and just and perfect and allow us to be part of that.
-
It's fitting.
