-
Serving others starts out feeling like a calling and can totally turn into a weight that quietly crushes the very people carrying it.
-
The meals delivered, the late-night phone calls, the endless meetings, we tell ourselves we can rest later once the need eases up, but the need rarely eases up on its own.
-
Galatians 6 9 says, Let us not become wary in doing good, for that the proper time will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
-
Isaiah 40, 30 and 31 adds, even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall, but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
-
It will soar on wings like eagles, it will run and not grow wary.
-
Paul acknowledges that doing good is genuinely tiring work, and he offers a promise for the proper time rather than an instant fix for today's exhaustion.
-
Isaiah goes even further, admitting that even the young and strong grow tired and stumble.
-
Strength was never meant to come from our own reserves in the first place.
-
It comes from hoping in the Lord, actively waiting on him, not from simply pushing harder or serving longer on an empty tank.
-
Jesus, you withdrew to quiet places to pray even while surrounded by crowds with real urgent needs, showing us that rest and compassion can coexist.
-
Thank you that your care for us was never dependent on what we could produce or accomplish for you.
-
Now ask God to reveal how close you actually are to empty right now.
-
Even if you've been telling yourself and everyone else that you're fine.
-
Confess that honestly and ask God to help you discern the difference.
-
Caregiving, or another role of constant service.
-
Pray that the Holy Spirit would meet them in their exhaustion before they burn out.
-
Rather than leaving them, they carry it all alone.
-
God, thank you that you renew the weary, and our strength was never meant to come from ourselves alone.
-
We bring you our depleted hearts and our tired hands, and we ask you to restore what has been poured out and to help us rest in your sufficiency.
-
Amen.
