  1. I would like you to turn in your Bibles this morning to Psalm 139 and follow with me as I begin reading

  2. ! Psalm 139, verse 13-17.

    Psalms 139:13–17

  3. For you form me, my inward parts. You knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you,

  4. for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works, my soul knows it very well.

  5. My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of

  6. the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance. In your book were written every one of them, the days

  7. that were formed for me. When as yet there were, there was none of them. How precious to me are

  8. your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more than the sand.

  9. I awake, and I'm still with you. Let us pray.

  10. Father, for us,

  11. prayer is not a habit, but a glad expression of our complete confidence in you,

  12. for an admission of our frailty and our necessity for your enabling, both in my preaching of the

  13. Word of God and your dear people hearing it and applying it accurately and faithfully.

  14. And so we ask that this morning, as we take your Word and we make it front and center in our thinking,

  15. that would also govern the way in which we live and act in the world in which you've placed us.

  16. We pray that we would be a people that do more than give lip service to the value of human life

  17. on this single Sunday, that our concern for the well-being of others,

  18. for the frail and the unborn,

  19. and those who are alive and occupy the time that you have planned for them during their life,

  20. would be marked by our sincere interest in seeing that not only do they enjoy the blessing of life,

  21. but also that they come to know Christ as their Savior.

  22. We pray, Lord, this morning that the Lord Jesus

  23. is seen as the one and only hope that we have

  24. and the delight of our souls.

  25. We ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  26. This is the Sunday that we as a fellowship have laid aside, set aside,

  27. to think about the pro-life movement, in particular,

  28. in the light of the decision that was made by the Supreme Court of the United States

  29. back in 1973-74 to legalize abortion.

  30. And in those years that have transpired from that time,

  31. it is estimated, and it depends on whose statistics you're relying on,

  32. that over 60 million babies have been murdered in their mother's wombs.

  33. And in the days that have passed,

  34. it's become not that uncommon for that murder to take place

  35. not only in a mother's womb in the early stages of that child's development,

  36. but even outside the womb, if necessary,

  37. for the sake and preference of the woman who can claim that that is her decision,

  38. and our government supports that.

  39. The truth of the matter is,

  40. is that our day and age is not the only age in which the small infant,

  41. the frail, the innocent,

  42. has been abused and misused.

  43. I was doing some reading last week about the subject of the way in which unwanted children,

  44. isn't that a horrible word to use, unwanted children?

  45. But in the ancient world,

  46. one of the very, very common ways of managing child size

  47. prior to having the modern technology that we have in medicine,

  48. to care for a child that was born that the family decided

  49. was not going to be appropriate for them to raise,

  50. one of the things that was common, very common,

  51. was for the child to be exposed.

  52. And the child was left,

  53. in some cases,

  54. in Roman culture,

  55. left in the marketplace,

  56. and it was picked up there,

  57. or left to die.

  58. It was picked up,

  59. and that child was introduced to slavery or to prostitution

  60. as a very common means.

  61. In Roman law,

  62. actually,

  63. when a child was born,

  64. it was not a person in one sense

  65. until the father of the home

  66. actually reached down

  67. and picked the child up.

  68. Do you understand that?

  69. Had no name.

  70. It was not viewed as a citizen

  71. or a subject of the Roman government

  72. until the father actually did that.

  73. And if the father did not reach down

  74. and pick up that child,

  75. it was then abandoned

  76. and left to die.

  77. If you read the Scriptures,

  78. you will find that child sacrifice

  79. was not uncommon in the pagan world,

  80. particularly in the Philistine culture.

  81. And one of the things,

  82. if you're reading your way through the Scriptures,

  83. 1 and 2 Kings,

  84. 1 and 2 Chronicles,

  85. it talks about kings

  86. who allowed their children

  87. to be sacrificed to Molech.

  88. I was curious as to

  89. how else children were disposed of,

  90. and I found out that

  91. there were a number of natural herbs

  92. and various toxic substance

  93. that a woman could take

  94. that could conceivably produce an abortion,

  95. or it could also cause her life to be at risk.

  96. The modern medical procedure

  97. did not really come into popular use

  98. until actually surgical instruments were designed.

  99. You all wanted to know this, didn't you?

  100. I'm trying to help you here.

  101. Until modern surgical instruments

  102. came into being

  103. that allowed for a relatively safe

  104. medical procedure

  105. for destroying the unborn.

  106. And we may not think of it

  107. as often as we should

  108. of how violent

  109. and how wicked and cruel

  110. the culture that we live in is.

  111. The fact of the matter is

  112. is that

  113. the pro-life movement

  114. went to great lengths

  115. to secure some videos

  116. that were played

  117. throughout this last summer,

  118. and it caused quite a dust-up,

  119. didn't it?

  120. I mean, Planned Parenthood

  121. was exposed

  122. as a murderous

  123. group of people.

  124. And yet,

  125. do you realize

  126. realize that most of the noise

  127. of that event

  128. has passed into the rearview mirror

  129. and people don't even

  130. think about it today?

  131. I mean,

  132. thankfully,

  133. Powerball is over as well,

  134. and so that's gone too.

  135. But, you know,

  136. given all the different things

  137. that occupy

  138. the buzz

  139. in our culture,

  140. what happened this summer

  141. with those Planned Parenthood

  142. videos

  143. and the exposure,

  144. it's gone.

  145. It's gone.

  146. A great deal of

  147. insensitivity

  148. has taken its place.

  149. I read something

  150. interesting about

  151. World War II

  152. when President,

  153. when General Eisenhower

  154. heard about Auschwitz

  155. and Treblinka

  156. and the other death camps

  157. that put to death

  158. some three million

  159. or so Jews.

  160. He insisted

  161. that, number one,

  162. that the army sent in

  163. videographers,

  164. cinematographers

  165. that would take pictures

  166. of all the detail

  167. of what was happening

  168. in the camps.

  169. Here's why he said

  170. they should do that.

  171. He said,

  172. within a generation,

  173. many will deny

  174. that it ever happened.

  175. He made the citizens

  176. of the German towns

  177. and cities

  178. close to those places

  179. of murder,

  180. he made them walk

  181. through the camp

  182. and he made them

  183. bury the bodies.

  184. And he said,

  185. I want this generation

  186. to remember

  187. just how cruel

  188. and indifferent

  189. it has been

  190. to the value of life.

  191. And I will tell you

  192. this morning

  193. as I began studying

  194. several weeks ago

  195. regarding this matter,

  196. I talked to Pastor Saul

  197. earlier today.

  198. I said,

  199. you know what?

  200. I think this is the first time

  201. I've preached on the pro-life movement

  202. for several years

  203. because Pastor Saul,

  204. somehow or another,

  205. well, the truth is

  206. I went deer hunting

  207. during this time.

  208. And so Pastor Saul

  209. would preach.

  210. And I have to tell you

  211. that as I began studying

  212. and praying about this,

  213. I found my heart

  214. convicted

  215. convicted

  216. for allowing this subject

  217. to become less important

  218. in my prayer

  219. and my thinking

  220. than it deserves to be.

  221. And I would venture

  222. to say that I am not

  223. entirely atypical

  224. in that

  225. the sanctity of human life,

  226. which is foundational,

  227. can become something

  228. of less significance

  229. just because we allow

  230. all other kinds of things

  231. to occupy its space.

  232. I remember a friend

  233. from Emmanuel Baptist Church

  234. calling me up

  235. and saying,

  236. we are having a great deal

  237. of trouble

  238. finding board members

  239. for the pro-life movement.

  240. So what I'd like us

  241. to do this morning

  242. is start at the beginning.

  243. And I want you

  244. to think with me

  245. of some things

  246. that I have no doubt

  247. the vast majority

  248. of you here

  249. are in principle

  250. fully persuaded of.

  251. But here's the truth.

  252. The things that we do not

  253. consciously and deliberately

  254. think about carefully

  255. can become unimportant

  256. and diminished

  257. in their value

  258. and less influential

  259. in our behavior

  260. than they should be.

  261. And so when we start

  262. thinking of our view of life

  263. and framing it properly,

  264. we have to begin with God.

  265. And so allow me

  266. to flesh this out for you

  267. by saying,

  268. first of all,

  269. our view of God

  270. governs our value of life.

  271. Our view of God

  272. governs our value of life.

  273. What we sincerely believe

  274. about God

  275. ends up affecting

  276. every part of our thinking

  277. and ends up

  278. determining the way

  279. in which we behave.

  280. Now, if you remember,

  281. kind of don't go back

  282. on the screen,

  283. but there was a little phrase

  284. I put as the title

  285. of the sermon,

  286. is there not a cause?

  287. God's love.

  288. That phrase actually

  289. comes from a passage

  290. in 1 Samuel 17,

    1 Samuel 17:29

  291. verse 29,

  292. in the King James Version,

  293. in which David,

  294. as a young boy,

  295. comes into the camp

  296. of Israel,

  297. who is engaged

  298. in battle

  299. with the Philistines,

  300. and every day

  301. there is this gargantuan

  302. tower of a man

  303. that comes out

  304. and kind of

  305. mocks Israel.

  306. Remember that?

  307. He's kind of

  308. putting a smackdown

  309. on these poor Israelites

  310. who are scared to death

  311. to go to battle with him.

  312. And David hears

  313. this guy ranting

  314. and he's a little irritated.

  315. And he says,

  316. well, say,

  317. hey, what's going to happen

  318. to the guy

  319. that trashes him

  320. and kills him?

  321. Oh, well,

  322. he's going to get

  323. tax-free benefits,

  324. blah, blah, blah.

  325. And so, you know,

  326. David says,

  327. well, I'll do it.

  328. Right?

  329. And in the ESV,

  330. it talks about

  331. his brothers get on him.

  332. Well, actually,

  333. in all translations,

  334. it talks about his brothers.

  335. You just came down here

  336. because you wanted to see

  337. blah, blah, blah.

  338. And David,

  339. I like the King James,

  340. David says this,

  341. is there not a cause?

  342. In other words,

  343. you guys are sitting here

  344. listening to Goliath

  345. smack our God around

  346. and some of you

  347. don't seem to care about it.

  348. I care.

  349. I'm going to go

  350. do something about it.

  351. And so,

  352. this morning,

  353. I want you to understand

  354. that the way we see God

  355. ends up influencing

  356. the way we behave.

  357. So when we think

  358. about the pro-life movement,

  359. let's start by recognizing

  360. all human life

  361. from conception

  362. to old age

  363. and the grave

  364. is precious

  365. because mankind

  366. was created

  367. by God

  368. and for His glory.

  369. I want you to look

  370. at a passage,

  371. if you will,

  372. in Colossians 1,

    Colossians 1:16

  373. verse 16.

  374. Go to Colossians 1,

    Colossians 1:16

  375. verse 16.

  376. Why is it that we,

  377. as believers,

  378. put the value

  379. that we do

  380. on life?

  381. Here's why.

  382. For one,

  383. it says,

  384. For by Him

  385. all things

  386. were created

  387. in heaven

  388. and on earth,

  389. visible and invisible,

  390. whether thrones

  391. or dominions

  392. or rulers

  393. or authorities,

  394. all things

  395. were created

  396. through Him

  397. and for Him.

  398. The one

  399. who created us

  400. is the one

  401. that we belong to.

  402. Over in Revelation

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  403. chapter 4,

  404. it says something

  405. very similar to that.

  406. It says that

  407. we,

  408. you and I,

  409. and all created beings

  410. exist for His glory.

  411. I was thinking

  412. earlier this week

  413. of the fact

  414. that one of the things

  415. that we find

  416. in the book of Job

  417. and connect it

  418. with a passage

  419. in Jeremiah,

  420. in Job it refers

  421. to the fact

  422. that Job,

  423. along with all

  424. the others there,

  425. were just a pinch

  426. of clay

  427. in the hand of God.

  428. How many of you

  429. ever did artwork

  430. in school?

  431. Remember?

  432. the art,

  433. I remember art,

  434. and the art teacher

  435. would say

  436. he had mixed up

  437. this mass of clay.

  438. He'd say,

  439. why don't you guys,

  440. you go get a lump

  441. of this

  442. and make something

  443. with it?

  444. I've got to tell you,

  445. when my lump

  446. was finished,

  447. it looked much like

  448. what had come out

  449. of the little pile there.

  450. It really did,

  451. it was still a lump.

  452. But when God

  453. takes the lump

  454. or the pinch of clay,

  455. as it says in Job,

  456. it says,

  457. He's the one

  458. who frames it

  459. and forms it.

  460. He makes you

  461. the way He made you

  462. and He was the one

  463. who created you.

  464. I like what it says

  465. in the passage

  466. in Jeremiah

  467. talking about

  468. the potter's house

  469. and then in the book

  470. of Romans it says,

  471. does not the potter

  472. have authority

  473. and power

  474. over the clay?

  475. He made me.

  476. He has the right

  477. to determine

  478. the frame of my life,

  479. the length of my days,

  480. and the day

  481. of my home going.

  482. And so when we think

  483. about how our view

  484. of God influences

  485. our value of life,

  486. we start out

  487. by recognizing,

  488. hey, He's the one

  489. who did it,

  490. made me the way I am,

  491. and I belong to Him.

  492. Furthermore,

  493. we understand

  494. that all human life

  495. from conception

  496. to old age

  497. in the grave

  498. is precious

  499. because God

  500. made mankind

  501. to be His image bearer

  502. and the overseer

  503. of His created world.

  504. We are made

  505. in the image of God

  506. and as a result

  507. of that,

  508. we are here

  509. to represent Him.

  510. All human life

  511. from old age,

  512. conception,

  513. the grave

  514. is precious

  515. and God reserves

  516. the right of life

  517. and death

  518. to Himself alone.

  519. He is the giver

  520. and He's the taker

  521. of life.

  522. Over in Psalm 31,

    Psalms 31:15

  523. verse 15,

  524. it says,

  525. My times

  526. are in your hands.

  527. My times

  528. are in your hands.

  529. Let's look at

  530. another passage,

  531. if you will.

  532. You're in Colossians,

  533. but turn back

  534. and we're going to

  535. skip around

  536. a little bit today

  537. as we kind of look

  538. at the broad frame

  539. in which the Scriptures

  540. lay the sanctity

  541. of human life.

  542. Turn to Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 32:39

  543. chapter 32,

  544. verse 39.

  545. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 32:39

  546. chapter 32,

  547. verse 39.

  548. See,

  549. now that I,

  550. even I,

  551. am He,

  552. and there is no

  553. God beside me,

  554. I kill

  555. and I make alive,

  556. I wound

  557. and I heal,

  558. and there is none

  559. that can deliver

  560. out of my hand.

  561. God,

  562. God alone,

  563. is the giver

  564. and taker

  565. of life.

  566. Ever since sin

  567. entered the garden

  568. and Satan

  569. tempted Adam

  570. and Eve

  571. to think

  572. that they could

  573. usurp

  574. God's rightful place,

  575. men have committed

  576. the most horrible

  577. of crimes

  578. against one another

  579. and particularly

  580. against the innocent

  581. and the weak.

  582. human history

  583. is filled

  584. with murder

  585. and the horrible

  586. abuse of power.

  587. And I want to tell you

  588. that in every case,

  589. in any case,

  590. when mankind

  591. ultimately turns

  592. its back

  593. on God's moral law,

  594. it invariably

  595. begins the slow

  596. descent into the pit

  597. and suffers the

  598. consequence

  599. of its rebellion

  600. against God's

  601. value system

  602. and structure.

  603. I did not know

  604. or I did not think

  605. when I was younger

  606. that I would live

  607. long enough

  608. to see

  609. God's judgment

  610. beginning to play out

  611. on this nation.

  612. But I think I am.

  613. I think I am.

  614. And I think

  615. one of the principal

  616. reasons why that

  617. is playing out

  618. has to do

  619. with the value

  620. that God places

  621. on human life.

  622. I remember

  623. back in the 70s

  624. when abortion

  625. was legalized,

  626. one of the statements

  627. that was floating around

  628. in the 70s and 80s

  629. is that if God

  630. did not judge America

  631. for its attitude

  632. towards abortion,

  633. He would have to

  634. apologize to Germany

  635. for what He did

  636. for the mistreatment

  637. and slaughter

  638. of the millions

  639. of Jews.

  640. I am

  641. not at all

  642. surprised

  643. by the

  644. diminution

  645. that I see

  646. in American culture

  647. and I got to tell you

  648. that the answer

  649. is not in,

  650. can I say it slowly

  651. so you don't miss it,

  652. it's not in Washington.

  653. And I would make

  654. an appeal to you

  655. who become

  656. quite irritated

  657. with what's going on

  658. in Washington,

  659. let me encourage you

  660. to understand

  661. that the solution

  662. will not be political,

  663. it will be spiritual.

  664. spiritual.

  665. And you would be

  666. well served

  667. to put more energy

  668. into the spiritual

  669. well-being

  670. of the people

  671. around you

  672. rather than

  673. everything else.

  674. Sixty million

  675. plus

  676. babies

  677. slaughtered.

  678. And the thing

  679. that really

  680. strikes me,

  681. really strikes me

  682. as I stop

  683. and think

  684. about how

  685. quickly

  686. the

  687. Planned Parenthood

  688. videos

  689. came

  690. and went

  691. and how

  692. little

  693. they really

  694. stirred

  695. this country.

  696. Another thing

  697. that I want

  698. you to understand

  699. is that our

  700. view of God

  701. controls our

  702. actions.

  703. As we take up

  704. this second point,

  705. let me be clear

  706. that actions

  707. flow from

  708. thinking and

  709. values.

  710. The way in

  711. which you

  712. act

  713. ultimately

  714. tells me

  715. what you

  716. value

  717. and what

  718. you think.

  719. You got

  720. that?

  721. What you

  722. value

  723. and what

  724. you think.

  725. I lost

  726. track

  727. of the

  728. number of

  729. times I've

  730. heard people

  731. tell me that

  732. they were

  733. saved.

  734. In fact,

  735. I had a

  736. conversation on

  737. Thursday and

  738. another conversation

  739. on Saturday

  740. in that same

  741. vein of,

  742. oh,

  743. absolutely,

  744. I'm saved.

  745. In fact,

  746. I believe the

  747. teaching of the

  748. Scripture is

  749. this,

  750. is that once

  751. a person

  752. comes to

  753. faith,

  754. they don't

  755. lose their

  756. salvation.

  757. I agree.

  758. But let me

  759. tell you

  760. something.

  761. One of the

  762. undeniable

  763. blessings of

  764. genuine

  765. conversion is

  766. that it

  767. changes the

  768. way you

  769. are and

  770. it changes

  771. the way

  772. you think.

  773. And we

  774. who are

  775. here bear

  776. testimony to

  777. that.

  778. Now,

  779. we're not

  780. where we

  781. want to

  782. be,

  783. but anyone

  784. who is

  785. genuinely

  786. converted can

  787. look in the

  788. rearview mirror

  789. and say,

  790. and I'm

  791. not who I

  792. used to

  793. be.

  794. And so

  795. when a person

  796. says to me,

  797. oh,

  798. I'm a

  799. believer and

  800. I'm saved

  801. and I am

  802. so very

  803. thankful for

  804. what Jesus

  805. has done

  806. in terms of

  807. my eternal

  808. destiny and

  809. the certainty

  810. I have in

  811. heaven,

  812. my question

  813. also follows,

  814. and what

  815. difference is

  816. he making

  817. in your

  818. life today?

  819. The way

  820. we act

  821. does not

  822. earn us a

  823. right relationship

  824. with God.

  825. A right

  826. relationship

  827. with him

  828. does drive

  829. right actions.

  830. in fact,

  831. apart from

  832. right actions,

  833. there really

  834. is good

  835. reason to

  836. question the

  837. authenticity of

  838. a person's

  839. profession.

  840. Does that

  841. make sense?

  842. If I don't

  843. see,

  844. hey,

  845. if I don't

  846. see in

  847. my life

  848. the evidence

  849. of progressive

  850. sanctification and

  851. the power of the

  852. Word of God

  853. enabled by the

  854. Spirit of God

  855. bringing about

  856. slow and

  857. progressive change,

  858. I'd like to

  859. change quicker,

  860. but I can

  861. look back

  862. and see

  863. I'm not who

  864. I used to

  865. be.

  866. And so when

  867. we think about

  868. this business

  869. of the fact

  870. that our

  871. view of God

  872. really does

  873. control our

  874. actions,

  875. recognize Jesus

  876. put us on

  877. the spot with

  878. something he

  879. said over in

  880. Matthew 7,

    Matthew 7:21

  881. verse 21.

  882. Not everyone

  883. that says to

  884. me,

  885. Lord,

  886. Lord,

  887. what?

  888. It's going

  889. to enter

  890. the kingdom.

  891. It is an

  892. interesting thing

  893. to recognize

  894. how much

  895. of the pro-life

  896. movement is

  897. driven by

  898. people of

  899. faith

  900. across the

  901. broad spectrum.

  902. I read a

  903. very interesting

  904. comment by

  905. Moore.

  906. Pastor Andrew,

  907. where are you?

  908. You're out there

  909. somewhere.

  910. Raise your hand,

  911. Pastor Andrew.

  912. Russell Moore,

  913. is that correct?

  914. The Southern

  915. Baptist theologian?

  916. Thank you.

  917. I was right.

  918. Mark that down.

  919. Russell Moore

  920. said this.

  921. He said,

  922. I would like,

  923. he put it

  924. this way,

  925. I would not

  926. like to see

  927. any fewer

  928. rosaries at a

  929. pro-life movement

  930. rally,

  931. but I would

  932. like to see

  933. more evangelicals

  934. at one of

  935. them.

  936. Do you know

  937. what he meant?

  938. How many of you

  939. understand?

  940. Raise your hand

  941. if you understand

  942. what he said.

  943. I'll say it

  944. again slowly

  945. so you

  946. understand it.

  947. In other

  948. words,

  949. he was saying

  950. if more

  951. evangelicals

  952. took this

  953. matter of

  954. the pro-life

  955. movement

  956. more seriously,

  957. it would

  958. put their

  959. profession of

  960. faith into

  961. evident

  962. practice.

  963. I was

  964. convicted this

  965. week.

  966. as I

  967. thought back

  968. to how

  969. my own

  970. affection and

  971. concern for

  972. the pro-life

  973. movement

  974. has waned

  975. to some

  976. degree because

  977. of focus on

  978. other things.

  979. It's a

  980. shameful thing

  981. for me to

  982. say that.

  983. And it's a

  984. little frightening

  985. for me to

  986. admit that

  987. moving forward

  988. Tim Knoyer is

  989. convicted by the

  990. Spirit of God

  991. that he

  992. needs to be

  993. more active.

  994. When we

  995. think about

  996. the pro-life

  997. movement,

  998. we recognize

  999. that most

  1000. of the

  1001. effect of

  1002. a right view

  1003. of God has

  1004. not been with

  1005. letters and

  1006. phone calls

  1007. and marches.

  1008. the greatest

  1009. effect has

  1010. been with

  1011. kindness and

  1012. evidence of

  1013. mercy and

  1014. interest in the

  1015. lives of those

  1016. that are deeply

  1017. afflicted by

  1018. sin's

  1019. unintended

  1020. consequences.

  1021. I was

  1022. humbled to

  1023. see the

  1024. crowd that was

  1025. here Saturday

  1026. doing blankets.

  1027. blankets.

  1028. But I would

  1029. appeal to you

  1030. don't make it a

  1031. once and done

  1032. deal.

  1033. How many of you

  1034. understood what I

  1035. said?

  1036. Your heart,

  1037. if it is

  1038. touched by the

  1039. value of human

  1040. life, engages

  1041. to do that.

  1042. it's not just a

  1043. matter of doing

  1044. blankets.

  1045. It's a matter of

  1046. volunteering at the

  1047. Maternity Resource

  1048. Center.

  1049. It's a matter of

  1050. offering to help

  1051. with prenatal

  1052. medical care.

  1053. It's a matter of

  1054. showing personal

  1055. interest in those

  1056. that are caught

  1057. in the snare.

  1058. It is a

  1059. willingness to

  1060. invite people

  1061. into your

  1062. home and invest

  1063. in their lives.

  1064. And can I tell

  1065. you something?

  1066. Everybody listen

  1067. carefully.

  1068. There is no

  1069. piece of ministry

  1070. that isn't

  1071. messy.

  1072. Even if you

  1073. limit your

  1074. ministry to

  1075. people in this

  1076. congregation,

  1077. the truth of

  1078. the matter is,

  1079. is once you

  1080. step past the

  1081. hellos in the

  1082. lobby, every

  1083. one of us has

  1084. baggage.

  1085. Ministry

  1086. means you're

  1087. going to be

  1088. involved in

  1089. carrying baggage.

  1090. And so I

  1091. would plead with

  1092. you that if

  1093. you are convicted

  1094. that your view

  1095. of God demands

  1096. action, that you

  1097. understand that

  1098. means that you

  1099. find ways to get

  1100. invested in what

  1101. is going on around

  1102. you and in the

  1103. lives of people

  1104. that are hurting

  1105. and you spend

  1106. some of your

  1107. energy doing

  1108. things that count

  1109. forever.

  1110. together.

  1111. I love what

  1112. James chapter 2

    James 2:26

  1113. verse 26 says.

  1114. I'll just read it

  1115. to you.

  1116. It says,

  1117. for as the body

  1118. apart from the

  1119. spirit is dead,

  1120. so also faith from

  1121. works is dead.

  1122. Hey, if you have

  1123. the faith, it ends

  1124. up in a tangible

  1125. evidence that you

1126. can kind of put your

  1127. finger on and say,

  1128. yeah, yeah, yeah,

1129. this is why I'm doing

  1130. that, because of

  1131. what I believe.

  1132. It's our faith in

  1133. Christ that leads us

  1134. to care for the

  1135. unborn.

  1136. It's our faith in

  1137. Christ that leads us

  1138. to be invested in

  1139. the lives of other

  1140. people.

  1141. It's our faith in

  1142. Christ, listen to me

  1143. carefully, that makes

  1144. us willing to keep

  1145. on being spent in

  1146. doing things that

  1147. count forever.

  1148. So let me conclude

  1149. with some practical

  1150. ways to honor God

  1151. in the pro-life

  1152. picture.

  1153. Make the pro-life

  1154. issues part of your

  1155. personal prayer life.

  1156. Can I tell you

  1157. something?

  1158. One of the things

  1159. that I've learned is

1160. that the things I pray

  1161. about consistently

  1162. invariably end up

  1163. kind of consuming

  1164. oxygen in my life.

  1165. Do you understand

  1166. that?

  1167. Say it again slowly.

  1168. The things I really

  1169. pray about pretty

  1170. consistently end up

  1171. consuming oxygen.

  1172. I do them.

1173. All you have to do

  1174. is ask Tim Knoyer,

  1175. hey, are you

  1176. praying for

  1177. opportunities to

  1178. share the gospel?

  1179. And guess what?

  1180. When I'm doing it,

  1181. guess what happens?

  1182. Bada, bada, bing.

  1183. I have opportunities.

  1184. I don't go out

  1185. trolling West Broad

  1186. Street, but it

  1187. happens.

  1188. Okay?

  1189. When you're praying

  1190. about something,

  1191. over time, God

  1192. brings those prayers

  1193. into fruition.

  1194. You pray according to

  1195. the things that

  1196. Scripture instructs us

  1197. in and he brings

  1198. them about.

  1199. Maybe not as fast

  1200. as you'd like,

  1201. but they're there.

  1202. Secondly, recognize

  1203. that your life and

  1204. daily testimony

  1205. speak volumes.

  1206. Do you realize

  1207. that?

  1208. Your testimony and

  1209. your life speak

  1210. volumes.

  1211. And if you're,

  1212. I'm going to go

  1213. slow here so you

  1214. don't miss me.

  1215. If you're kind of

  1216. a bristly, prickly,

  1217. easily offended

  1218. person, people who

  1219. have lots of baggage

  1220. in their life don't

  1221. want to get anywhere

  1222. near you anyway,

  1223. right?

  1224. Do you follow that?

1225. Do you know what I'm

  1226. talking about by a

  1227. person that's easily

  1228. offended?

  1229. The best place to

  1230. find out if a person's

  1231. easily offended is

  1232. here, right?

  1233. You follow what I'm

  1234. saying?

  1235. How many of you

  1236. know?

  1237. No, I won't go

  1238. there.

  1239. Okay.

  1240. You know, hey,

  1241. listen, if we can't

1242. kind of suck it up

  1243. and be adults here,

  1244. why would we go

  1245. outside and decide

  1246. we're really going to

  1247. be kind and generous

  1248. and sympathetic and

  1249. invest our lives in

  1250. the well-being of

  1251. broken lives, right?

1252. I mean, some of us

  1253. are once and done.

1254. I did speak to them

  1255. once, and they did

  1256. not return the favor.

  1257. I guess I'm going

  1258. somewhere else.

  1259. Okay.

  1260. Yeah.

  1261. I wonder how that's

  1262. going to work with

  1263. other people with

  1264. broken lives.

  1265. So, your life and

  1266. daily testimony speak

  1267. volumes.

  1268. I'm reminded of what

  1269. it says in Titus

    Titus 2:10

  1270. chapter 2, verse 10,

  1271. that our lives can

  1272. adorn the doctrine of

  1273. God.

1274. When we act like Jesus

  1275. acts and like Jesus

  1276. treats us, do you

  1277. know that other people

  1278. figure it out?

  1279. Right?

  1280. Right?

  1281. If you're a grumpy,

  1282. frumpy person at work,

  1283. nobody's going to be

  1284. coming to you and

  1285. dumping their garbage

  1286. next to you and

  1287. asking you to help

  1288. clean it up.

  1289. On the other hand,

  1290. when we are not

  1291. living our lives for

  1292. the Lord Jesus Christ,

1293. here's what it says in

  1294. Romans chapter 2.

    Romans 2 chapter mention

1295. It says, we cause the

1296. name of Christ to be

  1297. blasphemed.

  1298. Huh?

1299. So, your life is a

  1300. daily testimony.

  1301. Another thing is let

  1302. your good works and

  1303. charitable spirit reflect

  1304. the heart of your

  1305. Savior.

1306. Why do you act the way

  1307. you do?

  1308. Do you realize that

  1309. when the waitress gets

  1310. the order wrong, you

  1311. have an opportunity to

  1312. act like Jesus?

  1313. Do you understand

  1314. that?

  1315. I mean, do not have a

  1316. little meltdown because

  1317. they didn't get you

  1318. your hamburger done

  1319. just exactly the way

  1320. you want.

1321. I'm not paid for it.

  1322. You know, it's like,

  1323. thank you, Jesus.

  1324. Okay?

1325. Let your good works and

  1326. charitable spirit reflect

  1327. the heart of your

  1328. Savior.

  1329. Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5:16

  1330. verse 16, let your

  1331. good works so shine

  1332. before men.

  1333. Hey, you can all

  1334. recite the verse, but

  1335. do it out there.

  1336. Be supportive.

  1337. engage in the pro-life

  1338. movement.

  1339. Engage in the pro-life.

  1340. By the way, I don't

1341. know the number over the

1342. manual, but I guess you

1343. could Google it or you

  1344. could go to PDHC.

1345. What does that stand for?

  1346. PD.

  1347. Pregnancy distress.

1348. Stand up and say that,

  1349. please, Margie.

  1350. Pregnancy

  1351. decision

  1352. health.

  1353. Thank you.

  1354. Okay?

1355. Or you can go to the

  1356. Maternity Resource Center.

  1357. I hope that, here's the

  1358. deal.

  1359. If I preach and it doesn't

1360. make a difference in your

1361. life, then part of my

  1362. prayers have not been

  1363. answered.

  1364. Does that make sense?

  1365. Oh, really?

  1366. Really?

  1367. Okay.

  1368. It's hard being me.

  1369. It's messy, too.

  1370. Okay, here we go.

  1371. I got more points.

  1372. Be a supporter and

  1373. encourager of adoption.

  1374. Huh?

  1375. There are abandoned

  1376. babies all over the

  1377. world.

  1378. I don't care where you

  1379. get one from.

  1380. I really don't.

  1381. But we as a

  1382. congregation ought to be

  1383. supportive of that.

  1384. A lot.

  1385. Finally, look for gospel

  1386. opportunities to every

  1387. hand.

1388. What I mean by that is

  1389. that, hey, listen, the

  1390. best thing that ever

  1391. happened to Tim

  1392. Knoyer is Jesus saved

  1393. me.

  1394. I haven't gotten over

  1395. that yet.

1396. I wonder if you have.

  1397. Here's the deal.

  1398. The things that really

1399. make a difference in our

1400. life, we end up talking

  1401. about.

  1402. Do you realize that?

  1403. Isn't that true?

  1404. Huh?

1405. I was into Giant Eagle

1406. again and had to get a

1407. Home Depot credit card or

1408. gift card so I could get

  1409. gas in my truck.

1410. You know how it goes.

1411. And anyway, I go up and

  1412. without me participating,

1413. the girl at the front desk

  1414. tells me about Powerball.

  1415. It's gone.

  1416. It's done.

  1417. Somebody else has got

1418. their life trashed as a

  1419. result of it.

1420. But the world is kind of

1421. sucked up on this Powerball

  1422. thing, right?

  1423. You know?

  1424. Hey, listen, smile.

1425. We talk about what we

  1426. think is important, right?

1427. And Powerball is not it.

  1428. It's Jesus.

  1429. It's Jesus.

1430. I had someone talk to me about

  1431. evangelism.

1432. And I said, you know what?

1433. One of the most encouraging

  1434. things about evangelism in

1435. Maranatha is most of it

  1436. doesn't happen here.

  1437. I like that.

1438. Most of it happens where

  1439. you're bumping into hurting

  1440. people, left and right.

1441. They're all out there, right?

1442. God hired you to go to

1443. places to work where people

  1444. have broken hearts.

1445. God put you in neighborhoods

1446. where the wheels are coming

  1447. off.

1448. God put you into environments

1449. where people's lives are not

1450. what they should be and they

  1451. know it.

1452. And you have the privilege of

1453. saying to them, guess what?

1454. I want to introduce you to the

1455. one who made all the difference

1456. in the world for me.

  1457. That's Jesus.

1458. I'm not in favor of evangelism

  1459. as a drive-by shooting event.

1460. I am in favor of just living it.

1461. And what I mean by that is not

1462. kind of walking around with a

1463. super silly grin on your face,

  1464. but praying about opportunity

1465. to share the gospel and let

1466. people know that, man, you know

1467. what it's like to be hurting.

1468. And you know who the answer is.

  1469. It's Jesus.

1470. He came into the world to save

  1471. sinners.

1472. He came into the world to satisfy

1473. the debt that our sin

1474. and the judgment that our sin

  1475. deserves.

1476. He died on the cross in my place

1477. and in your place and he offers

1478. salvation to whosoever calls upon

1479. the name of the Lord.

1480. And so the pro-life issues,

  1481. abortion, broken homes,

1482. abandonment, is just a window

1483. through which we get to step

1484. and say, come meet the one

1485. who loves me and died for me

1486. and rose again and in whose name

  1487. I have confidence forever.

  1488. Let's close in prayer.

  1489. Our Father,

1490. we are thankful that you

  1491. delivered us from bondage

  1492. and darkness into light.

1493. We're thankful that you have

1494. called us to be your

  1495. on-site representatives

  1496. in a broken world.

  1497. And certainly, the area

1498. of what is taking place

  1499. in the world today

1500. in relationship to the unborn

  1501. deserves our conscious

  1502. and deliberate passion.

1503. not as the single event of life

1504. but as an evidence of the fact

  1505. that people need Jesus.

1506. Let us be a people that are

  1507. marked by mercy

  1508. because we receive mercy.

1509. Let us be a people that are

1510. engaged in that which lifts up

1511. the value of human life

1512. because it is precious to you.

1513. And let our lives speak volumes

  1514. to a broken world

  1515. that needs Christ.

  1516. And we pray this

1517. in the name of Jesus.

  1518. Amen.

  1519. Let's stand together as...
