  1. Now, here's what I'm going to do, okay? First question

  2. I'm going to ask today is simply this. Have you

  3. ever wondered, a legitimate question, am I experiencing spiritual warfare

  4. or am I just having an incredibly lousy week? You

  5. ever thought about that? How many of you? I mean,

  6. that's me all the time. Like, is this spiritual warfare

  7. or am I just the most unfortunate dude on this earth?

  8. So how do you know whether Satan's attacking you? Or

  9. it's just a combination of maybe our bad decisions or

  10. unfortunate bad breaks. So here's what I'm going to do. Now,

  11. I need everybody. I feel pity for the people who's

  12. going to walk in after this illustration because this illustration

  13. sets up the whole sermon. Here's what I'm going to do.

  14. I'm going to tell you a 100% true story. And

  15. then I'm going to interpret it two different ways afterwards.

  16. And that's going to set us up for today. So

  17. pay attention because if you don't pay attention to this,

  18. you're going to be lost more than you usually are.

  19. All right, here we go. Now, the first youth group

  20. that I led, we were experiencing God's hand. We were

  21. seeing a couple hundred students come on Sunday night. Most

  22. of these kids did not go to church anywhere. So

  23. it was just a God thing, a revival. And he

  24. was doing some things that just shocked us. There was

  25. four of us on staff. Now pay attention to this

  26. because if you don't get this, you'll be very confused.

  27. Four of us on staff. There was an older youth pastor.

  28. There was me, the younger youth pastor. And then there

  29. was two part-time youth pastors, one male and one female.

  30. One older youth pastor, me, a young part-time female, and

  31. a young part-time male. Okay, so God's doing a great work,

  32. but we were preparing for this big mission trip. And

  33. within a few weeks, almost the whole team was taken

  34. out of action. Very first thing that happened was the

  35. female part-time staffer was hit by a semi and was

  36. almost killed and was in ICU for quite a while.

  37. Bunch of broken bones. It was bad. The male part-time

  38. staffer had been disciplined and needed to step back from

  39. ministry for a season. And that led to a down

  40. season for him significantly. Suddenly, because this is the week

  41. before the mission trip, there are two openings on the trip.

  42. So a young couple from the church volunteered to go,

  43. and they were going to help in the kitchen and

  44. wherever else we needed them to help. About halfway through

  45. the trip, I jumped on a horse... and got bucked off.

  46. I suffered a severe concussion, broke my back, and at

  47. first I was told by a doctor I was going

  48. to die, and then when we got to the hospital,

  49. they said you might not ever walk again. And so

  50. my wife and I naturally were now not on the

  51. mission trip, but in the hospital. The young couple who

  52. came in last moment, who were helping in the kitchen,

  53. now took over my responsibilities on the field And they

  54. went on to the mission field and they got to

  55. be on the same site as, ready, the other youth pastor.

  56. All right. This couple, who should have never even been

  57. on the trip, you know, if everything would have went

  58. as planned, were now on the same site and became

  59. very good friends with the older youth pastor. Fast forward

  60. a couple months, just a couple. The wife of that

  61. couple and the older youth pastor fell in love and

  62. had an affair. Broke up family. It was bad. Hurt

  63. the youth ministry significantly and rocked a lot of us. Okay,

  64. so here's interpretation number one. Ready? Satan was trying to

  65. destroy a growing ministry. First, Two part-time staff members couldn't

  66. go because of unforeseen circumstances. Their replacements came, a young couple.

  67. Then I was injured and I had to leave the trip.

  68. And that brought the other couple who replaced the staffers

  69. closer to the other pastor. And their friendship eventually blossomed into, unfortunately,

  70. an affair. Now, you can clearly look at this story

  71. and see how Satan's hand was all over it. He

  72. eliminated two staffers just so the couple could go in

  73. the first place. Then he took me and my wife

  74. out so that these replacements could become friends with the

  75. older youth pastor. And then Satan began his great work

  76. of helping them fall in love and have an affair.

  77. All right, that's interpretation number one. Here's interpretation number two

  78. of the exact same story. The young male staffer made

  79. some poor decisions and faced discipline. He went through a

  80. painful season. He's okay today. The female staff member reached

  81. for something on the floor in her car, became distracted,

  82. and got hit by a semi. I wanted to be

  83. funny and jumped on a horse that was tied to

  84. an abandoned car that was upside down. The couple who

  85. came on board, they just wanted to help. Circumstances beyond

  86. their control moved them into a different responsibility. And the

  87. wife of that couple and the other youth pastor made

  88. decisions that crossed boundaries that led to an affair. Their

  89. decisions led to a lot of pain for many people.

  90. So here we go. Same events. Two ways of explaining it.

  91. Which one's true? Was Satan arranging all these events? Or...

  92. Was it a combination of people just making a lot

  93. of poor decisions? Or could it be there was Satan

  94. at work and also some really bad decisions at work? Now,

  95. I know what happened. I lived through this. But I

  96. cannot prove to you what happened behind the scenes. But

  97. I do know this, that an affair was not part

  98. of their destiny. They could have stopped. They could have

  99. asked for help. They were responsible for their choices. And

  100. this is where we need to begin today. See, when

  101. it comes to spiritual warfare, get this. We need to

  102. be honest about what we do not know and clear

  103. about what God has told us. All right. So the

  104. Bible doesn't give us an explanation of every accident, illness

  105. or disappointment, but it does tell us what we need

  106. to know about our enemy. All right. So I want

  107. to start here today. Here's four truths about Satan. Number one,

  108. Satan is real and he opposes God and his people. Peter,

  109. in our text today, is going to call him an enemy.

  110. And spiritual warfare is more than just a figure of speech. Okay?

  111. Number two, Satan tempts and deceives. Look at this. He

  112. tempted Jesus over and over and over and over again.

  113. Jesus in John 8 calls Satan a liar. Okay? So

  114. Satan wants us to believe these lies and do wrong.

  115. Number three, Satan... can actually be involved in affliction, oppression,

  116. and opposition in your life. His activity goes beyond a

  117. battle in your mind, okay? Scripture gives us examples of this.

  118. Diseases started by Satan. Spiritual depression. Opposition that comes from Satan.

  119. But the Bible also is very clear that Satan is

  120. not God's equal. That his power has limits. Number four.

  121. Satan's influence, and this is big today, does not remove

  122. our responsibility. In Acts chapter 5, Ananias and Sapphira, they

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  123. got a lot of money. They have this property. They

  124. decide to sell this property. And they could have kept

  125. all the money for themselves. And for some reason, they

  126. decided to keep some of the money back for themselves,

  127. which was perfectly okay. But for who knows why, they

  128. told everybody that they were giving the whole amount for

  129. what they sold the property for. So Peter confronts them.

  130. Now pay attention to what Peter does here. Okay. The

  131. first thing that Peter does is, well, he attributes some

  132. of it to Satan. Okay. But also, he also lets

  133. Ananias know that he's responsible too. Let's look at this.

  134. Then Peter said, Ananias, how is it that Satan has

  135. so filled your heart? In other words, why have you

  136. allowed Satan to tempt you to this level? And then

  137. he turns to Ananias and says, you have lied. Get it?

  138. He didn't say Satan lied for you. He says, you

  139. lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself

  140. some of the money you received for the land. So

  141. Satan was involved. But who's responsible? Ananias. He could have

  142. told the truth. He chose a lie. And again, that

  143. reminds us that spiritual warfare does not remove us from

  144. our own responsibility. See, we cannot blame Satan for every problem.

  145. And we cannot use Satan as an excuse for our choices. Okay?

  146. These two truths belong together. see if if we okay

  147. ignore the enemy we might overlook a you know real

  148. danger in our lives but if we blame him for

  149. everything guess what we're never going to grow spiritually either

  150. so the question is not just what is satan doing

  151. But the better question is this, am I taking responsibility

  152. for my response? Okay, see, we have these moments in

  153. Scripture where Scripture pulls back the curtain and lets us

  154. see behind the scenes of the spiritual world, okay? And

  155. so we can learn something from these moments in Scripture

  156. where we actually get insight into the spiritual world. Number one,

  157. we learn from Job. You guys remember Job? And Job

  158. lost his children, his possessions, his health. Why? Because Satan

  159. came to God one day and he told him, he said, listen.

  160. He says, Job only loves you and Job is only

  161. dedicated to you because you've blessed him in every single way.

  162. And God says, no, Job truly loves me. And so

  163. Satan says, well, then let me touch him. Let me

  164. afflict him. Let me take away everything and let's see

  165. if he still loves you. God agrees to that. But

  166. then also God sets the limits because God is still

  167. in control. Now, here's the interesting thing. Job has no

  168. idea this conversation is going on. And that reminds all

  169. of us, there could be more in your life than

  170. what meets the eye. There could be some real spiritual

  171. warfare going on in your life that you have no

  172. idea about. Now, it does not mean that every one

  173. of us who suffers, we're experiencing satanic warfare. No, no, no.

  174. We also see where Daniel prays. One time Daniel prays,

  175. he does not get an answer for 21 days. 21

  176. days after Daniel prays, the archangel Michael shows up and

  177. he says, hey. We weren't ignoring you. On day one,

  178. we heard your prayers and your prayer was answered on

  179. day one. But you were held up by the demon,

  180. the prince of Persia. Okay, so there was an actual

  181. spiritual battle going on in the heavens that delayed the

  182. angel from answering Daniel's prayer. So what we understand is, okay,

  183. spiritual warfare, it could be literal spiritual warfare. But we

  184. should also not be delusional all the time, I think.

  185. Every time you don't have an answer prayer, be like, well,

  186. the angels are up here fighting over me today. Number three,

  187. we also see that Jesus met a man who was

  188. tormented by demons. He lived among the tombs. He was isolated.

  189. He was suffering. But after he encountered Jesus, what happened?

  190. We see him sitting there. cleaned up in his right mind.

  191. So the possession's real, but what do we learn? Jesus'

  192. authority is greater. Lastly, in Revelation. Now this is fascinating.

  193. In Revelation, Jesus warns the church that Satan is going

  194. to have some of the saints of God put into prison.

  195. Now why do I share that? I'm sharing that to

  196. let you know that even if you do everything right,

  197. you go to church every single week, you pray daily,

  198. you seek the Lord, you want to do what's right,

  199. and you want to please him, that does not mean

  200. that Satan won't attack you. Okay? See, faithfulness does not

  201. mean you will avoid painful experiences from Satan. So those Christians,

  202. they were doing what they were supposed to do, but

  203. they were opposed. Now, you put all of these passages together,

  204. what do we understand? Spiritual opposition is real. It can

  205. involve temptation, suffering, and forces we cannot see. Now, here's

  206. what I could do for the rest of the morning.

  207. And if I was a TV evangelist, I would do this.

  208. I would just make up a bunch of things. No,

  209. I'm kidding. I could spend the rest of the time

  210. together today trying to help you figure out what's behind

  211. the scene. Is this what Satan is? What's Satan doing here? Okay.

  212. But who knows if I'm right? Instead, here's what we're

  213. going to do. We're going to look at how God

  214. tells us to respond. Okay? So that's something that we

  215. can control. And actually, as we close up the book

  216. of Peter, Peter actually gives us the answer. Let's look

  217. together at the end of the book. He says, talking

  218. about spiritual warfare. He says, be alert. Okay? And of

  219. sober mind. Your enemy, the devil, what's he do? He

  220. prowls around like a roaring lion. Looking for someone to devour.

  221. Resist him. Standing firm in the faith. Because you know

  222. that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing

  223. the same kind of suffering. The first word I want

  224. to look at here. And as we jump into this,

  225. I want you to know our big idea today is

  226. simply this. Stand firm against the enemy by standing close

  227. to God. How do we stand firm against the enemy?

  228. By standing close to God. Now what is our response

  229. to spiritual warfare? I only have two points today. Two points. One, okay,

  230. pay attention to the enemy and your own heart. You

  231. got to pay attention to your own heart. Peter begins

  232. by saying what? Be alert and of sober mind. Let's

  233. look at this word sober mind first, okay? Now, in

  234. the Greek, it's the word nepho. Now, what does this mean?

  235. It means basically to think clearly about situations. Don't jump

  236. to conclusions, okay? Process what's going on. You know, have

  237. discernment when you're experiencing trials or temptations. Don't panic. See,

  238. don't assume you know what causes every problem. Look honestly

  239. at the facts and your own decisions. This summer, the

  240. same week, both my vehicle and Gina's vehicle broke down

  241. and it... had thousands, I mean like a lot of

  242. thousands of dollars in damage. Mine broke down when I

  243. was almost home from the mission trip. Hers broke down

  244. in Kentucky on the way home from a vacation with

  245. my family without me while I served the Lord. Okay,

  246. so let's ask this question. Did my vehicle get attacked

  247. by Satan because I was serving the Lord while hers

  248. was just ordinary life or a gentle reminder from the

  249. Lord that her husband could use a vacation as well? Or,

  250. being sober-minded, is it possible that two vehicles way over

  251. 10 years old that were driving many, many, many, many,

  252. many miles in 100-degree weather could possibly break down. Okay,

  253. now I can't diagnose whether it's spiritual warfare or not,

  254. but here's what I'm not going to do. I'm not

  255. going to go around to people and say, you wouldn't

  256. believe what happened. Satan just crawled in through my exhaust pipe,

  257. through my catalytic converter, and then he whirled around to

  258. my carburetor and got my carburetor so mad that it

  259. blew a gasket. Hallelujah, praise the Lord. No, I'm not

  260. going to tell you that because that sounds insane. It's

  261. fun to say it that way, but it sounds insane.

  262. Have you ever heard people just tell you the craziest

  263. reasons why stuff happens? You don't know. And you lose

  264. all your credibility if you go around saying crazy stuff.

  265. The second word, Gregorio. It really means to pay attention.

  266. And what it means is to pay attention to what's

  267. really growing in your heart. Because, see, that's the thing.

  268. Satan is a deceiver. A liar. And really, the greatest

  269. way that we fell at spiritual warfare is by not

  270. paying close attention to our hearts. See, you might not

  271. know why someone criticized you, but you can recognize that

  272. you want to get even. You might not know why

  273. something went wrong, but you can recognize when your heart

  274. starts to believe that God doesn't care about you. See,

  275. we may not know what caused the problem, but we

  276. can recognize our temptation in response. Peter calls us to

  277. pay close attention. very close attention to our soul and

  278. our attitude when we face trials or unfortunate circumstances now

  279. pay attention he's saying whenever you're experiencing these things peter

  280. continues on he says your enemy the devil prowls around

  281. like a warring lion looking for what someone to devour

  282. he doesn't just want to injure you he wants to

  283. destroy your life now here's what's interesting a lion is

  284. always looking for an opportunity to strike his prey Yet

  285. we have to understand how a lion approaches. A lion

  286. will use cover. It will use trees, high grass, other

  287. vegetation to cover their approach. Here's what they're trying to do.

  288. They're trying to camouflage their approach and hunt the prey themselves.

  289. when they're unaware of what's happening. And this helps us

  290. understand why Peter says we have to stay alert. We

  291. have to pay attention to the temptations in our life. See,

  292. Satan will help us camouflage even our own temptations in

  293. our life. He helps us move into denial. He helps

  294. us lie to ourselves about what's really going on in

  295. our sinful nature. Also, the enemy, the greatest way that

  296. the enemy helps us camouflage is by giving us excuses.

  297. Gives us excuses all the time. See, a dangerous relationship

  298. can grow through conversations we begin hiding with a person

  299. of the opposite sex. But we can give excuses. Well,

  300. it's just innocent. Right? Bitterness can grow while we keep

  301. replaying the hurt in our mind over and over again.

  302. Dishonesty can grow when we start with one lie, but

  303. then we have to tell a bunch of other lies

  304. to cover up for that one. Pride can grow when

  305. we stop listening to others because we think we already

  306. know better. And Satan, what he wants to do is

  307. he wants us to camouflage all that. He'll give us

  308. excuse after excuse after excuse so we don't actually pay

  309. attention to what's really going on inside our soul. See,

  310. the danger of falling into sin is that sin can

  311. grow while we keep camouflaging the truth by telling ourselves

  312. nothing is wrong. By telling ourselves nothing is wrong. Now,

  313. here's where I had a lot of fun this past

  314. week in writing. Maybe a little bit too much fun.

  315. You'll be able to figure this out. I start realizing

  316. as I start thinking through Satan, Satan is old. Been

  317. around a long time. Satan has watched probably the great

  318. battles of history. Satan knows the great generals' war plans.

  319. Satan has experienced one war after one war, after battle,

  320. after battle. He knows the insights of messed up people,

  321. of generals, all these things. He knows warfare. And so

  322. I started thinking, you know what? I wonder if I

  323. can look at maybe the greatest book ever written on warfare.

  324. The Art of War by Sun Tzu, which was written

  325. over 2,500 years ago. And I wonder if Sun Tzu's Okay,

  326. if Sun Tzu's points about how to have war and

  327. defeat your enemy would line up with Satan's points on

  328. how to destroy your enemy. And guess what? They do.

  329. I got five of them. So this is my favorite

  330. section I've ever titled in my whole life. Sun Tzu

  331. and Satan, warfare experts. First of all, Sun Tzu said

  332. that all warfare is based on what? Deception. Deception. Think

  333. about this. In Genesis 3, from the very beginning, Adam

  334. and Eve are saying, hey, all of this is yours.

  335. Don't touch that one plant. Don't touch that fruit. Satan comes.

  336. What does Satan do? Satan starts to act like maybe

  337. God's lying to you. Maybe God doesn't want you to

  338. have that because you'll be able to know the same

  339. things he knows. So what does he do? Satan convinces

  340. Eve that maybe God does not have all good for her.

  341. So she starts looking at the fruit differently. She starts

  342. desiring it. She takes it. She eats it. She gives

  343. it to her husband. Now here's what the serpent did. Satan.

  344. They made disobedience look like a better choice than trusting God.

  345. Now we hear these lies today when we say, well,

  346. nobody will get hurt. Yeah, they will. You deserve this. Really?

  347. God's way is, well, it's keeping you from being happy.

  348. We have those same excuses today. We need to ask this.

  349. Am I trusting what God has said or am I

  350. making excuses for what I want to do? Number two,

  351. the second place that Sun Tzu and Satan line up

  352. is attack them where he is unprepared. Peter says stay watchful, okay?

  353. And we should not leave any of our areas of

  354. our lives unguarded, okay? Now think about the person who

  355. says this. You know what? I would never have an affair. So?

  356. Here's what they do. They don't pay attention to any

  357. boundaries because they're pretty confident that that could never happen

  358. to them. So they don't think nothing when they begin

  359. having private conversations. Or they start to share their frustrations

  360. about their marriage with someone else. Or they enjoy the attention.

  361. Or they start hiding the relationship. Or they, you know,

  362. their confidence has made them careless. See, saying I would

  363. never is not the same as guarding your heart. It's

  364. not the same. Number three, Sun Tzu says, If his

  365. forces are united, separate them. Oh, man. This is how

  366. Satan destroys the church and families. Okay, let's just go

  367. church history. Church history has typically been divided by when

  368. a church members, you know, they start gossiping about each

  369. other or having resentment towards each other, and it's never addressed.

  370. As a result of that, Well, you see church splits.

  371. Churches break apart. That happens all over the United States.

  372. I know of several church splits just in the last

  373. few years. A couple in this area. All right. Then, okay,

  374. so there's those church splits, but what about our families?

  375. How has Satan worked in our families the last few years?

  376. Let me tell you how. I've seen it. I've seen

  377. it by one family member believing this political party and

  378. another family member believing this political party And all of

  379. a sudden, they can't even be in the same room

  380. with each other. And Satan's back here going, this is phenomenal.

  381. This is phenomenal. This is great. You should fight more.

  382. This is good for the grandkids. And so Satan will

  383. often try to divide us because a family that's weak

  384. can be broken easily. So we resist division by, well,

  385. what are we going to do? We've got to address

  386. the hurt. We've got to tell the truth about how

  387. we're feeling. We've got to work toward peace. Number four,

  388. Son of Zeus says, hold out baits to entice the enemy. Now,

  389. basically what he is saying is that trick your enemy

  390. into thinking it's a good time to attack. And a

  391. lot of times what they would do, an army would

  392. make it look like they're disorganized or they're not ready.

  393. So the other enemy will come and attack. And what

  394. they've done is they've really set a trap for them

  395. to surround the army. So they use themselves as bait. See, bait,

  396. here's what it does. It offers you something you want

  397. while hiding what it's actually going to cost. Here's what

  398. temptation does in your life. It draws your attention to

  399. the pleasure of and away from the consequences. Again, this

  400. is why Peter says, pay attention, stay alert. Last one today.

  401. If your opponent is of a choleric temper, seek to

  402. irritate him. What's choleric temper? It's somebody who is quick-tempered. Oh,

  403. and by the way, if you're a quick-tempered person, you're

  404. like Satan's punching bag. You are so easy. If you

  405. have a quick temper, Satan just goes, what was that?

  406. You know, Satan loves. And people who are quick-tempered, well,

  407. you're more likely to make some mistakes. Okay? You're easily provoked.

  408. And see, being provoked, here's what I want you to understand.

  409. It might not be your fault. Seriously, you might not

  410. have been the one to provoke the situation. But you

  411. have to understand that being provoked does not give us

  412. permission to sin. Now, before you respond and stop and ask,

  413. am I trying to obey Jesus or am I trying

  414. to get evening? Here's what I want to do. I

  415. want you to understand that this last tactic about using

  416. our tempers is exactly the same tactic he used on

  417. Peter over and over again. And it's one that I

  418. hate to, I'm going to share with you here in

  419. a moment, I hate to confess that I got caught

  420. up in sin a couple weeks ago. If you remember,

  421. Peter was told again and again and again by Jesus

  422. that his kingdom was not of this earth. But then

  423. what happens whenever the army came and attacked the disciples?

  424. Peter grabs out a sword and the Bible says that

  425. he cut the guy's ear off. Do you understand what

  426. really happened? He tried to cut his head off. He

  427. missed and hit the dude's ear. He was a bad shot. Okay? Now,

  428. If that would have went forward, what would have happened

  429. that night? Jesus' disciples would have been killed by the

  430. Roman army. And God's will would not have been fulfilled.

  431. This is why Jesus looked at Peter like, you've got

  432. to be kidding me. And he's like, oh, sorry, guy.

  433. Slapped the dude's ear back on, healed it. We all good?

  434. We all good? Okay. See, because Peter let his temper

  435. get the best of his emotions. Now, was he right

  436. in his heart about saying that the Romans should not

  437. be arresting Jesus? Absolutely. Well, but what he did, was

  438. it God's will? No. And I understand. You know, I

  439. can react. For some reason, if I'm really, really embarrassed,

  440. I can sometimes react by saying something very stupid. Didn't

  441. know if you know that about me. But my best

  442. friend from childhood was visiting a couple weeks ago, and

  443. we were sitting on our back patio, and he told

  444. a story from my past that was buried in my past.

  445. And he told a story in front of my wife,

  446. and they both started laughing at me hysterically. I was

  447. a little embarrassed. And so I don't know why, but

  448. this horrible story of something he did that we vowed

  449. never to ever bring to the light a day again.

  450. And I thought, this is a good time to share that.

  451. And I shared that story of something that happened to

  452. him way before he came to Christ. I looked over

  453. at him on the couch on my patio. He grabbed

  454. ahold of his chest. He goes, oh, I didn't know

  455. you would ever bring that up. And that's when I realized,

  456. I think I just sinned. And I immediately, I started

  457. to think, and man, the Holy Spirit grabbed ahold of

  458. me like, You know what, just because you're embarrassed, you

  459. need to pull that story out. That story that, I

  460. don't know why. And I immediately looked at them and said, guys,

  461. I've sinned to you and I've sinned before God. I

  462. am so, so sorry. But wasn't that a funny story? No,

  463. I didn't say that. No, I didn't say that. But see,

  464. we could quickly lose ourselves. That's why Peter says, pay

  465. attention to what you say, what you think, what you do.

  466. Process what's going on. All right, the second point, very

  467. small point. Okay, here we go. Resist the enemy by

  468. standing firm in your faith. Peter goes on to say,

  469. resist him standing firm in the faith. Now, this first

  470. Greek word we use here for resist, it means simply

  471. do not give in. In other words, keep trusting Jesus,

  472. keep obeying the truth, keep believing his truth. And here's

  473. the thing, Peter's instruction that he gives us for standing

  474. against the enemy. By the way, it's not a guarantee

  475. that faithful people will never suffer. No, the same verse

  476. reminds us that people around the world are suffering. See,

  477. you can be suffering and standing firm. So what does

  478. resistance look like for us? Well, here's our defense system.

  479. Very simple. We need to pray before we react. What

  480. if I would have prayed before I told that horrible

  481. story on my friend? Believe me, God would have said, no. Instead,

  482. I felt horrible. Absolutely horrible. Before you send the message,

  483. before you answer the criticism, or you make a decision, pray.

  484. Number two, Replace the lie with God's truth. See, when

  485. the thought is, well, this will never hurt anyone. Remember,

  486. there's going to be other people hurt. Or when the

  487. thought is, I cannot stop. Don't forget the Bible teaches

  488. us in 1 Corinthians that God will always give us

  489. a way out of our temptation. When the thought is

  490. that God can never forgive this. No, no, no, no.

  491. Come to Jesus, confess your sin and receive his forgiveness.

  492. Remember that a strong feeling, does not make a lie true.

  493. Just because you have a strong feeling, you can't trust

  494. your feelings all the time. Let me tell you something.

  495. I have had, not one, not two, but at least three,

  496. three couples over the years where one person came to

  497. me and said this, I have fallen in love with

  498. this other person from this other marriage. And I really

  499. believe it's God's will for us to be together. And

  500. I'm like, I know it's not. It is not God's will.

  501. And they will go on and on and tell you

  502. all the signs and tell you that God has showed

  503. them that they missed their soulmate. Like, this isn't just once.

  504. This has happened multiple times. And I'm like, no, this

  505. is sinful. And don't blame this stuff on God. And

  506. guess what? They never talked to me again. Because they

  507. would rather have their own desires met then obey God.

  508. You can't trust your feelings. Your feelings might, see, the

  509. strength of your feelings does not determine whether your decision

  510. honors God. And lastly today, when you don't know what

  511. to do, just take the next obedience step. And this

  512. is why early obedience matters. As soon as you're convicted,

  513. as soon as you doubt that this might be God's will, stop, pray, thank, obey.

  514. So here's what I'm gonna do as we close up today.

  515. What I want to do is I'm going to do

  516. something different. So the sermon's over, and now we're moving

  517. into response time. And I'm going to do something I've

  518. never done before, but as I was praying for you

  519. this week, I thought about how Satan might attack each

  520. group in our church. And so what we're going to

  521. do here, this is an all play. Here in a moment,

  522. I'm going to go through a lot of categories, and

  523. I'm going to talk about how to prepare yourself or

  524. watch out for what Satan is doing. While I do that,

  525. everybody's going to be standing. And then when I'm done,

  526. what we're going to do is I have, or the ushers,

  527. the prayer partners, have been prepared to do a prayer

  528. of protection and power over you. Okay, so it's kind

  529. of like communion this week, but it's not communion, it's anointing.

  530. You don't have to get up and say anything. You

  531. don't have to share anything. If you don't want oil

  532. on your head, just walk up and do this. If

  533. they don't get that that means you don't want oil,

  534. we'll do some training later. But what we're going to

  535. do is we want to pray a prayer of power

  536. and protection over every single one of you. So here's

  537. what I'm going to do now. I'm just going to

  538. share some of these things that I believe that a

  539. lot of us deal with in temptation. So let's stand

  540. as we Hear these temptations. And then we'll respond here

  541. in a moment. All right. To the Father. Providing for

  542. your family is a good and loving responsibility. But you

  543. may be tempted to believe everything depends on how much

  544. you accomplish, earn, or provide. Your family also needs your presence.

  545. Listen to them. Make time for them. Let them see

  546. you pray, show kindness, and apologize when you're wrong. You

  547. do not have to be a perfect father to show

  548. your family what following Jesus looks like. To the mother,

  549. you may be tempted to believe your worth depends on

  550. keeping everyone happy and having a family that looks perfect.

  551. Then comparison leaves you feeling like a failure. Resist by

  552. remembering your worth in Christ. Ask for help. Let your

  553. family see honest faith instead of a performance. To the

  554. young couple, you may be tempted to keep score, hide

  555. spending and share your frustrations with someone who begins taking

  556. your spouse's place. Resist by telling the truth, protecting your

  557. boundaries and addressing problems before secrecy grows. To the older couple,

  558. you may be tempted to stop investing in one another

  559. or treat years of marriage as permission to become unkind.

  560. Resist by listening again. Apologize. make time together. A long

  561. history does not remove the need for daily faithfulness to

  562. the single person. You may be tempted to let loneliness

  563. persuade you to accept a relationship that pulls you away

  564. from God. Resist by protecting your convictions and building friendships

  565. where you can receive love, encouragement, and accountability to the

  566. young person. You may be tempted to believe fitting in

  567. matters more than following Jesus or that or what you

  568. do online doesn't really count. Resist by making the faithful

  569. choice when pressure arrives. Ask for help. You do not

  570. have to compromise to matter. To the older person in

  571. this room, you may be tempted to believe that God

  572. has finished using you. Resist by encouraging someone, sharing your

  573. faith and staying open to what God can still do

  574. through you. To the new believer in the room, you

  575. may be tempted to think a struggle means your faith

  576. is not real or that failure means you should quit.

  577. resist by staying close to Jesus and his people ask

  578. questions receive correction and when you fail repent and keep

  579. growing and lastly to the long time believer which is

  580. a lot of us in this room you may be

  581. tempted to think you no longer need accountability you know

  582. the right words but you have stopped allowing God to

  583. correct you resist by remaining teachable keep praying keep examining

  584. your heart experience does not make us immune to temptation

  585. So this morning, friends, we understand that we might not

  586. be able to figure out what Satan's doing here or

  587. what Satan's doing here, but we do know that he

  588. is deceitful, that he can cause significant trials in your life.

  589. And so we just want to love on you today

  590. by simply praying a blessing over you of power and protection.

  591. So just go ahead and come down as you want.
