  1. I want you to think of a time when a friend, family member, fellow church member, or even maybe your own child came to you with a complex problem in his life.

  2. ! Hold that memory.

  3. He came to you for help and you want to help him.

  4. His problem is messy.

  5. It's confusing.

  6. It's hard to understand.

  7. It's complicated in every respect.

  8. You listen.

  9. You think.

  10. You even pray while he is explaining the problem to you.

  11. Then the most important moment happens.

  12. He stops and it is your turn to speak.

  13. You have to say with words something.

  14. What will you say?

  15. It is the most important moment for him.

  16. Will you immediately choose his side of the situation in order to please him?

  17. Or will you lean on a recent podcast you heard recently on kind of his question?

  18. Or will you lean on your prior education and what a long ago professor said in a lecture you heard long ago?

  19. The question is this.

  20. What will be the foundation from which you will build upon in helping your friend, family member, fellow church member, or child?

  21. This is where what you believe about the sufficiency of scripture comes into real life.

  22. Maybe you can resonate with this feeling.

  23. Life seemed more simple when you were young and in college.

  24. But now three kids deep into the married life things don't seem so simple.

  25. Maybe life has become more complex than what you ever thought and you find it more difficult to apply scripture to yourself and your family.

  26. The sufficiency of scripture has real life consequences for both faith and practice.

  27. One author describes getting this doctrine wrong as both devastating and unending.

  28. The stakes are high for getting this doctrine right.

  29. For the time we have this morning, let us dive into the doctrine of the sufficiency of scripture.

  30. For the sake of our friend, seeking our counsel, for ourselves as we navigate through these complex times, and for the glory of God who gave us his word.

  31. So it will not surprise you that our text today will be 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  32. So please turn with me in God's word to 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  33. And the verses we will be zoning in on here is 14 to 17.

  34. But first, let us pray for our time together.

  35. So pray with me.

  36. Father, as we read your word together this morning, being reminded that your word,

  37. that you have spoken is enough for us no matter our circumstances.

  38. Help us through the work of your son and the power of the Holy Spirit to rightly divide and interpret your word

  39. so that we might rightly live out your word for your glory and your glory alone.

  40. Amen.

  41. 2 Timothy 3, 14 to 17.

  42. This is Paul writing his last letter to Timothy.

  43. The word of God reads,

  44. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed,

  45. knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings,

  46. which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  47. All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

  48. that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

  49. There are several doctrines of scripture we could teach from this text.

  50. We could talk about the necessity of scripture, its inspiration, its authority, etc.

  51. But today we will zoom in on the sufficiency of scripture.

  52. This doctrine asks a simple question.

  53. Is scripture enough?

  54. Is scripture enough?

  55. My goal today is to show you from this text that the answer is yes,

  56. even though there are no literal scripture is sufficient verse in scripture.

  57. In the complexities of this life, there is hope in looking to Jesus from God's word and the Holy Spirit for counsel in any area of our life.

  58. At the risk of contradicting my claim, I will begin with some, I believe, helpful definitions outside of scripture for us.

  59. Then we will deep dive into 2 Timothy 3.

  60. I will give you one short definition and one long definition.

  61. So, first, the shorter one.

  62. When I was in college, probably the most influential theologian for me was John Frame.

  63. Maybe because he leaned into the spicy side of theological debates.

  64. But most probably because he took really complex topics in systematic theology and explained them in really short and memorable bites.

  65. For a simple person like me, that was a lifesaver.

  66. One definition has been with me for years, though.

  67. John Frame defines theology like this.

  68. Theology is the application of scripture to every area of life.

  69. Theology is the application of scripture to every area of life.

  70. In the same book, The Doctrine of the Word of God, John Frame goes further to say that

  71. scripture contains all the divine words needed for any aspect of human life.

  72. This is his short and memorable definition of the doctrine of the sufficiency of scripture.

  73. For a longer one, I'll quote Wayne Grudem in his systematic theology.

  74. Scripture's sufficiency means that scripture contains all the words of God he intended his people to have.

  75. That's at each stage of redemptive history.

  76. And that it now contains everything we need.

  77. God to tell us for salvation.

  78. For trusting him perfectly.

  79. And for obeying him perfectly.

  80. I'll read that one more time.

  81. Scripture's sufficiency means that scripture contained all the words of God he intended his people to have.

  82. At each stage of redemptive history.

  83. And it now contains everything we need God to tell us for salvation.

  84. For trusting him perfectly.

  85. And for obeying him perfectly.

  86. One author I read commented on Grudem goes on says one of the strongest points about this definition.

  87. Is that it allows us to say though we must believe in the progress of revelation.

  88. Being God didn't say everything he wanted to at once.

  89. But did so incrementally.

  90. At any point during scripture's composition.

  91. It would have been correct to say that the books already written.

  92. Had the characteristic of sufficiency.

  93. The characteristic of sufficiency.

  94. In short, Old Testament saints.

  95. Like David or Moses.

  96. Etc.

  97. Could rightly say in their own day.

  98. That scripture is enough.

  99. But let us be like the Bereans from Acts 17.

  100. And let us examine the scriptures ourselves.

  101. To see if these things are so.

  102. Like I said.

  103. The stakes are high.

  104. For getting this doctrine correct.

  105. So our text.

  106. Second Timothy 3.

  107. 14 to 17.

  108. Gives us a simple two point outline.

  109. Just a simple two point outline.

  110. The first two verses is the first point.

  111. The last two is the last point.

  112. Evenly divided.

  113. It is.

  114. Scripture is enough.

  115. For faith.

  116. Scripture is enough.

  117. For faith.

  118. And that's verses 14 to 15.

  119. And the last two verses.

  120. 16 to 17.

  121. Is the second point here.

  122. I'm dividing it up.

  123. Scripture is enough.

  124. For practice.

  125. Scripture is enough.

  126. For practice.

  127. For faith.

  128. And practice.

  129. I want you to notice that it is not.

  130. The opposite order.

  131. Here.

  132. It is not.

  133. Practice.

  134. Then faith.

  135. But.

  136. Paul puts it.

  137. It is faith.

  138. Then.

  139. Practice.

  140. As we'll see.

  141. The first.

  142. Is the foundation.

  143. Of the second.

  144. The first.

  145. Is the foundation.

  146. Of the second.

  147. So.

  148. First.

  149. Scripture.

  150. Is enough.

  151. For faith.

  152. Verses.

  153. 14 to 15.

  154. Look with me.

  155. Verse 14 reads.

  156. But as for you.

  157. Continue.

  158. Continue.

  159. Or remain.

  160. In what you have learned.

  161. And have firmly believed.

  162. I'll say.

  163. Faith.

  164. Knowing from whom.

  165. You learned it.

  166. Notice.

  167. The progression.

  168. From having learned.

  169. To having firmly believed.

  170. From having learned.

  171. To having firmly believed.

  172. Not only that.

  173. That.

  174. But Timothy.

  175. Heard the word.

  176. From his family.

  177. Here.

  178. Is a clear.

  179. Call.

  180. To parents.

  181. Although.

  182. We cannot impart.

  183. A saving knowledge.

  184. Of God.

  185. To our children.

  186. Which is the role.

  187. Of the Holy Spirit.

  188. We are called.

  189. To be faithful.

  190. To teach them.

  191. Scripture.

  192. So they might.

  193. Learn.

  194. The truth.

  195. Let us.

  196. Not only.

  197. Speak.

  198. The truth.

  199. And love.

  200. To our children.

  201. Daily.

  202. But also.

  203. Help us.

  204. We also.

  205. To pray.

  206. For them.

  207. Daily.

  208. To have the gift.

  209. Of a firm.

  210. Faith.

  211. Look with me.

  212. Next verse.

  213. 15.

  214. It reads.

  215. And how from childhood.

  216. You have been.

  217. Acquainted.

  218. With.

  219. Or known.

  220. The.

  221. Sacred.

  222. Writings.

  223. Which are able.

  224. To make you.

  225. Wise.

  226. For salvation.

  227. Through.

  228. Faith.

  229. In Christ.

  230. Jesus.

  231. There are two things.

  232. We can say.

  233. About this verse.

  234. As it pertains.

  235. To.

  236. Scripture's.

  237. Sufficiency.

  238. First.

  239. We can say.

  240. That Timothy.

  241. Learned.

  242. And known.

  243. The scriptures.

  244. Even from an early age.

  245. Like we just.

  246. Pointed out.

  247. The ESV.

  248. Puts it.

  249. As.

  250. Have been.

  251. Acquainted.

  252. With.

  253. The sacred writings.

  254. I'll be short.

  255. With this.

  256. Application.

  257. You cannot.

  258. Do.

  259. What.

  260. You do not.

  261. Know.

  262. Know.

  263. You cannot.

  264. Do.

  265. What.

  266. You do not.

  267. Know.

  268. Another.

  269. Way.

  270. We can.

  271. Put it.

  272. Is.

  273. You cannot.

  274. Practice.

  275. What.

  276. You have not.

  277. Heard.

  278. Or.

  279. Read.

  280. Cannot.

  281. Practice.

  282. What.

  283. You have not.

  284. Heard.

  285. Or.

  286. Read.

  287. Knowledge.

  288. Of.

  289. God.

  290. Is.

  291. Not.

  292. Enough.

  293. For.

  294. True.

  295. Faith.

  296. As.

  297. James.

  298. Points.

  299. Out.

  300. With.

  301. The demons.

  302. Having.

  303. A belief.

  304. In.

  305. God.

  306. But.

  307. Not.

  308. A trust.

  309. Christ.

  310. As.

  311. Paul.

  312. In.

  313. Romans.

  314. 10.

  315. Writes.

  316. So.

  317. Faith.

  318. Comes.

  319. From.

  320. Hearing.

  321. And.

  322. Hearing.

  323. Through.

  324. The word.

  325. Of.

  326. Christ.

  327. Second.

  328. On this.

  332. Neither.

  333. Paul.

  334. Nor.

  335. Timothy.

  336. Had.

  337. The complete.

  338. Canon.

  339. Of.

  340. Scripture.

  341. That is.

  342. To say.

  343. Not.

  344. All.

  345. Sixty.

  346. Six.

  372. Significant.

  373. And.

  374. I point.

  375. This.

  376. Out.

  492. And.

  493. For.

  494. Training.

  495. In.

  496. Righteousness.

  497. There is a lot we could say.

  498. About this verse.

  499. But I'll only highlight points that are related to our topic of sufficiency.

  500. All.

  501. Scripture.

  502. All.

  503. Scripture.

  504. Is.

  505. A.

  506. Continuation.

  507. Of.

  508. Our.

  509. Last.

  510. Point.

  511. That.

  512. Both.

  513. Old.

  514. Testament.

  515. And.

  516. New.

  517. Testament.

  518. Point.

  519. To.

  520. Salvation.

  521. In.

  522. Christ.

  523. Both.

  524. Covenants.

  525. Point.

  526. To.

  527. The.

  528. New.

  529. Covenants.

  530. Culminating.

  531. In.

  532. Christ.

  533. Paul.

  534. Goes.

  535. On.

  536. To.

  537. Give.

  538. Two.

  539. Descriptions.

  540. Of.

  541. Scripture.

  542. That.

  543. Of.

  544. God.

  545. Breathed.

  546. And.

  547. Profitable.

  548. Profitable.

  549. There is a detail here with the word that the ESV renders as breathed out by God that

  550. I don't want you to miss.

  551. Paul smashes two words together to make one new word.

  552. Nowhere else does this word exist besides outside this one text.

  553. He makes a brand new word.

  554. These two words are both God.

  555. He smashes it up against spirit or breath.

  556. He makes a new.

  557. So God breathed or breathed out by God as the ESV expands out for us.

  558. But for us today I want you to dwell on the fact that in this one.

  559. I'm sorry.

  560. Usually incorrectly this is used to point to the inspiration of scripture.

  561. But for us today I want you to dwell on the fact that in this one word Paul is reminding

  562. us that the spirit is required for a right understanding of the word.

  563. The spirit is required.

  564. The second description is that of profitable or useful, advantageous, beneficial, gain.

  565. This is followed by four uses of scripture that is meant to be comprehensive in nature.

  566. These include for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training or upbringing in righteousness.

  567. Read the last verse with me.

  568. Verse 17.

  569. That the man of God may be complete.

  570. Equipped for every good work.

  571. To remind us of the old covenant promises leading into the new.

  572. This man of God may be complete.

  573. Or as my older ESV renders it, competent.

  574. This word is similar to the equipped word in the last half of this verse.

  575. They share a root.

  576. So it goes.

  577. This is where I'm going with this.

  578. So it goes from complete to equipped.

  579. I think Paul is wanting you to make that connection.

  580. For what is he equipped for?

  581. For every good work.

  582. Since the words for all and every, all and every, are the same in the Greek language.

  583. I want to point out the connection Paul is making when beginning with, beginning with all scripture.

  584. And then ending on every good work.

  585. Connecting scripture with good work.

  586. He completes the circle of his point that scripture is enough for both faith as well as practice.

  587. I want you to think back to our original question.

  588. What will be the foundation from which you will build upon in helping your friend, family member, fellow church member, or child?

  589. By looking closely at the doctrine of the sufficiency of scripture,

  590. I hope you will be encouraged to challenge yourself to apply all of scripture to all of life.

  591. That in the tense moments this week, you will take the initiative to step back and ask how scripture speaks into your current circumstance.

  592. With time, practice, and the Holy Spirit, by seeking to obey God's word in every area of your life,

  593. you will become even more competent to speak godly counsel to those in need.

  594. From friends, family, church members, coworkers, whoever God places in your life.

  595. And as Proverbs 3, 5 to 8 says,

  596. Do not lean into your own understanding,

  597. but into the wisdom of God alone found in his word.

  598. Those complexities of life will still be complex,

  599. but the word remains the same.

  600. It will be true,

  601. wise,

  602. life-giving,

  603. and a sufficient...

  604. So in closing,

  605. I want to leave you with two warnings

  606. and two exhortations.

  607. Two warnings

  608. and two exhortations

  609. on the topic of the sufficiency of scripture.

  610. The first warning is this.

  611. Beware of what I will call

  612. good book fatigue.

  613. Good book fatigue.

  614. Every fall season,

  615. Christian book publishers

  616. all come out with their annual catalogs

  617. of books that are new and forthcoming.

  618. If you are a huge nerd,

  619. you look forward to this every year.

  620. I do.

  621. But as time has gone by,

  622. I not only get less excited,

  623. but I tend to ask the question more and more

  624. about most of the titles I see.

  625. Does someone really need this?

  626. But don't get me wrong.

  627. I have read some great books

  628. that were very niche

  629. that has had a big impact on me.

  630. But for us,

  631. who are in the broadly reformed corner

  632. of evangelicalism,

  633. there is a warning here.

  634. Let us guard against

  635. merely holding scripture up

  636. in high regard

  637. by saying it has both,

  638. is both authoritative

  639. and sufficient

  640. while not reflect,

  641. reflecting this

  642. in our reading practices.

  643. I want you

  644. to compare

  645. how much time

  646. you are in scripture reading

  647. and praying

  648. to the times

  649. you are consuming

  650. even good

  651. resources

  652. on scripture.

  653. Think books,

  654. audiobooks,

  655. podcasts,

  656. etc.

  657. Again,

  658. reading good books

  659. is good and beneficial,

  660. but let us not

  661. neglect time

  662. reading,

  663. meditating,

  664. studying,

  665. and memorizing

  666. the very words

  667. of God

  668. that he has given

  669. to us

  670. in our own language.

  671. do not feel

  672. as if you have

  673. to read

  674. all the good books.

  675. In light

  676. of knowing

  677. that scripture

  678. is enough,

  679. let us dig

  680. deep into his word

  681. so that we will

  682. practice his word

  683. out into the world

  684. for the glory

  685. of the creator

  686. and sustainer

  687. of the universe.

  688. So,

  689. second warning.

  690. Beware of requiring

  691. what scripture

  692. has not

  693. required.

  694. Beware of requiring

  695. what scripture

  696. has not

  697. required.

  698. Jesus warns

  699. of this

  700. in Mark 7.

  701. I'll read.

  702. This is Mark 7,

  703. 5 to 8.

  704. And the Pharisees

  705. and the scribes

  706. asked him,

  707. Why do your disciples

  708. not walk according

  709. to the tradition

  710. of the elders

  711. but eat with

  712. defiled hands?

  713. And he,

  714. Jesus,

  715. said to them,

  716. Well did Isaiah

  717. prophesy of you hypocrites.

  718. As it is written,

  719. This people

  720. honors me

  721. with their lips,

  722. but their heart

  723. is far from me.

  724. In vain

  725. do they

  726. worship me,

  727. teaching as doctrines

  728. the commandments

  729. of men.

  730. You leave

  731. the commandment

  732. of God

  733. and hold

  734. to the tradition

  735. of men.

  736. If scripture

  737. is enough

  738. for both

  739. faith

  740. and practice

  741. as we've seen,

  742. we need to be careful

  743. to reflect this

  744. in the things

  745. we require

  746. of one another.

  747. Which leads

  748. to a question.

  749. Does what

  750. you believe

  751. about God

  752. think

  753. theological bent?

  754. Does your

  755. theology

  756. reinforce

  757. scripture

  758. is sufficient?

  759. Or will it

  760. call into question

  761. scripture's

  762. sufficiency

  763. to others

  764. around you?

  765. Beware,

  766. brothers and

  767. sisters,

  768. of becoming

  769. convinced

  770. of a belief

  771. that you first

  772. saw in a book

  773. or heard

  774. in a podcast

  775. and only

  776. then saw

  777. in scripture.

  778. Beware.

  779. Pray that

  780. you would

  781. see clearly

  782. the difference

  783. between the

  784. tradition of

  785. men

  786. and the

  787. commandment

  788. of God.

  789. Now,

  790. to the

  791. exhortations.

  792. First,

  793. I'll call this

  794. exhortation,

  795. new problems,

  796. ancient answers.

  797. New problems,

  798. ancient answers.

  799. Jeremiah 6,

  800. 16 says

  801. this,

  802. thus says

  803. the Lord,

  804. stand by the

  805. roads and

  806. look and

  807. ask for the

  808. ancient paths

  809. where the

  810. good way

  811. is and

  812. walk in it

  813. and find

  814. rest for

  815. your souls.

  816. But they

  817. said,

  818. we will not

  819. walk in it.

  820. that was

  821. Jeremiah 6,

  822. 16.

  823. In an

  824. increasingly

  825. complex world

  826. where we

  827. do not know

  828. what might

  829. come next,

  830. rest assured

  831. that the

  832. path has

  833. been made

  834. and it

  835. is not

  836. new,

  837. but ancient.

  838. Built

  839. into this

  840. doctrine that

  841. scripture is

  842. enough is

  843. the truth

  844. that no

  845. matter how

  846. complex

  847. the next

  848. biomedical

  849. technology

  850. might

  851. be around

  852. the corner.

  853. Scripture

  854. is enough

  855. for us

  856. to think

  857. through

  858. and make

  859. decisions

  860. on

  861. whatever

  862. the world

  863. might throw

  864. at us.

  865. Let us

  866. not refuse

  867. to walk

  868. on that

  869. ancient

  870. path.

  871. Next,

  872. my last

  873. exhortation

  874. is actually

  875. coming from

  876. Psalm 1

  877. and I

  878. did not

  879. tell Nathan

  880. this,

  881. but he

  882. put Psalm

  883. 1 in

  884. your

  885. bulletin,

  886. which is

  887. great.

  888. Providence,

  889. right?

  890. The

  891. providence

  892. of the

  893. Lord.

  894. So,

  895. you can

  896. turn with

  897. me there.

  898. This is

  899. where we'll

  900. end.

  901. Psalm 1

  902. gives us

  903. a way

  904. to read

  905. scripture

  906. well.

  907. psalm 1.

  908. It is

  909. not only

  910. a rubric

  911. to

  912. read

  913. the entire

  914. psalms

  915. well,

  916. because it

  917. gives us

  918. a paradigm

  919. for the

  920. rest of

  921. that book,

  922. but it

  923. gives us

  924. a way

  925. to read

  926. and to

  927. think about

  928. scripture

  929. well.

  930. So,

  931. I'm going

  932. to read

  933. it.

  934. Psalm 1.

  935. The Way

  936. of the

  937. Righteous

  938. and the

  939. Wicked.

  940. Blessed is

  941. the man

  942. who walks

  943. not in

  944. the counsel

  945. of the

  946. wicked,

  947. nor stands

  948. in the

  949. way of

  950. sinners,

  951. nor sits

  952. in the

  953. seat of

  954. scoffers,

  955. but his

  956. delight is

  957. in the

  958. law of

  959. the Lord,

  960. and on

  961. his law

  962. he meditates

  963. day and

  964. night.

  965. He is

  966. like a

  967. tree,

  968. planted

  969. by streams

  970. of water,

  971. yet yields

  972. its fruit

  973. in its

  974. season,

  975. and its

  976. leaf does

  977. not wither.

  978. In all

  979. that he

  980. does,

  981. he prospers.

  982. The wicked

  983. are not

  984. so,

  985. but they

  986. are like

  987. chaff that

  988. the wind

  989. drives away.

  990. Therefore,

  991. the wicked

  992. will not

  993. stand in

  994. the judgment,

  995. nor sinners

  996. in the

  997. congregation

  998. of the

  999. righteous.

  1000. For the

  1001. Lord knows

  1002. the way

  1003. of the

  1004. righteous,

  1005. but the

  1006. way of

  1007. the wicked

  1008. will

  1009. perish.

  1010. But his

  1011. delight

  1012. is in

  1013. the law

  1014. of the

  1015. Lord,

  1016. and on

  1017. his law

  1018. he meditates

  1019. day and

  1020. night.

  1021. As one

  1022. author puts

  1023. it,

  1024. you cannot

  1025. delight

  1026. in what

  1027. you do

  1028. not

  1029. meditate

  1030. on.

  1031. You

  1032. cannot

  1033. delight

  1034. in what

  1035. you do

  1036. not

  1037. meditate

  1038. on.

  1039. As the

  1040. Baptist

  1041. pastor

  1042. John

  1043. brought

  1044. us,

  1045. who is

  1046. one of

  1047. the

  1048. founders

  1049. of the

  1050. Southern

  1051. Baptist

  1052. Theological

  1053. Seminary,

  1054. has said,

  1055. let us

  1056. be those

  1057. who are

  1058. known to

  1059. be,

  1060. quote,

  1061. mighty

  1062. in the

  1063. scriptures,

  1064. mighty

  1065. in the

  1066. scriptures.

  1067. Let us

  1068. be mighty

  1069. in the

  1070. scriptures,

  1071. mighty

  1072. in our

  1073. faith,

  1074. and

  1075. mighty

  1076. in

  1077. our

  1078. practice.

  1079. Pray

  1080. with

  1081. me.
