You're listening to a message to go from X Church.
-
We hope this message will light up your day.
-
Today, I'm going to be sharing about the Holy Spirit.
-
How many of you know that the Holy Spirit is
-
still at work in our lives? The Holy Spirit is
-
still at work in Malaysia. And every single country that
-
you're coming from. And, you know, there is, you know,
-
there were sparks of revival that happened even in one
-
of our campuses in Nilai. Starting time back, you know,
-
the sparks started in COVID during the pandemic time. And yes,
-
you know, you know, You know sparks, right? And then
-
causes fire. Very good fire that does not cause us haze.
-
And it has spread across different campuses called IPG. That's
-
our Teachers Training Institute all across Malaysia. And yeah, all
-
of this. Yeah. Through the enabling of the Holy Spirit.
-
It's not by any amount of human strength or ability
-
or capability. But it is through the enabling of
-
the Holy Spirit. Now a lot of times in
-
our faith, we kind of, you know, talk a lot
-
more on God the Father and on... The Son as
-
well as Jesus. Whenever, you know, if ever, you know,
-
and we know, you know, God the Father, His attributes,
-
who He is. And you know, Jesus as well,
-
we know what he has done. Who he is
-
and what he can do. But many times, we
-
will actually leave out the Holy Spirit. We don't
-
talk much about him. And today I want to
-
title him, not title him, but title my message as
-
the Forgotten One. A lot of times we forget That
-
we have the Holy Spirit in us. Or sometimes,
-
maybe culturally, some people are afraid of the Holy Spirit.
-
You know, in some cultures, like, oh, is this a ghost?
-
You know, spirit, sometimes it equates spirit to ghost, right?
-
Or, you know, maybe some people have a misconception.
-
And they may have some associations, okay, if I have
-
the Holy Spirit, I'll have erratic behavior.
-
You know, when the.
-
Holy Spirit comes upon the church in different service, suddenly
-
there'll be chaos. Everyone will be breaking in times and
-
running everywhere or whatever not. Because of what we see
-
or perceive on, you know, on TV sometimes. Not TV,
-
but videos that we watch, okay, get circulated. Sometimes you
-
feel like, hey, you know, is it an emotional manipulation?
-
Or, you know, it's the speaking task, I don't understand, like,
-
you know, I'm afraid of it. Hence, because sometimes
-
of that, the Holy Spirit gets locked out. It's
-
like he gets locked in a basement in a house.
-
Although we acknowledge he's the third person in the Trinity.
-
But we have never ever invited him into our life.
-
Sometimes people take him you know, like an impersonal force.
-
You know, sometimes you may understand, okay, you know, my past,
-
you know, church, you know, preach about the Holy Spirit being,
-
you know, dynamite, you know, dynamite power. You know, Sometimes
-
people will use him and equate him like, okay, there's
-
electricity or sometimes people give a comparison that the Holy
-
Spirit is like a gravity force. And sometimes, because of that,
-
we treat him very impersonal. We just treat him as
-
a force. But today, I would like to share with
-
you more that the Holy Spirit is not that impersonal.
-
It's not just a force. It's not the third person
-
in the trinity that causes chaos. But he is a person.
-
Beyond a person, he is a divine person. That's
-
why you realize we do not refer to him as
-
an it. Because when we refer to a force,
-
we will just refer to it as an it, right?
-
But He is the third person of the Trinity. Whole
-
eternal with the Father and the Son. Until and unless
-
we are able to experience Him as a person. We
-
will never be able to experience the fullness of life
-
that God has given to us. We would not
-
be able to experience the extent of Jesus' sacrifice on
-
the cross for us. And the Holy Spirit as
-
well was not just given to us post-sacrifice. Jesus' death, right?
-
He was already there in the Old Testament. Alright, let's
-
look at Genesis chapter 1, verse 1 to 2. And
-
we will read it together. Okay, if you guys are there,
-
say yes. Alright, let's read it in 1, 2 and 3.
-
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
-
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was
-
on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of
-
God was hovering over the face of the waters. Alright? So,
-
to understand and know the Holy Spirit more, we have
-
to look back to the beginning.
-
Alright?
-
And it says here in verse 2,
-
the Spirit was there. Before there was light and
-
there was land, there was the Spirit. So the...
-
We read here in the word Hebrew, okay, the original
-
language is actually Ruach. So, you know, when we read
-
verse 2, it says, And the Ruach of God was
-
hovering over the face of the waters. It actually means
-
the breath and the wind. The meaning is that the
-
breath and the wind And in the Hebrew's mind, these
-
three concepts of the spirit, the wind and the breath
-
is actually inseparable. We definitely cannot see wind.
-
We can feel the movement of air right now.
-
So we cannot see the wind, but we can
-
actually see its powerful effects. Wind, you know, the
-
powerful effects, it can actually uproot a tree as well.
-
Wind shifts the ocean. And now, you know, with
-
the hay situation in Malaysia, we really, really need the wind, okay,
-
to move all across from the Indian Ocean, okay? The
-
whole Illinois. We cannot see breath. But breath itself is
-
the essence of our life, right? If any one
-
of us are not here, means this morning we didn't
-
manage to wake up with breath in us. That
-
would mean we have gone back to see Jesus, right?
-
So therefore, Ruach Elohim, right? The Spirit of God, He
-
is invisible, but He is powerful. He is like giving.
-
He is the active, moving presence of God. And you
-
can see here in verse 2, so that's the second
-
part to this verse, right? So, and the roar of
-
God was hovering over the face of the waters. So
-
this word hovering, okay, in Hebrew, it actually does not
-
mean like how your drone or helicopter now hovers. Alright,
-
in these days, like your drone or helicopter, it hovers.
-
But it has the same meaning in
-
Deuteronomy 32 verse 11 Let's turn to that
-
It will help us understand what this hovering means more
-
Okay Deuteronomy chapter 32 verse 11 If you're there, you
-
can say yes. Alright, and then we shall read it
-
together in 1, 2 and 3. As an eagle stirs
-
up its nest, hovers over its young, spreading out its wings,
-
taking them up, carrying them on its wings. So this
-
word itself, hovers now, gives a Better depth, right? As
-
we read Deuteronomy 32, 11. It's described as how like
-
a mother eagle broods over or hovers over her nestlings.
-
Fiercely protecting them, inspiring them for life. Have any one
-
of you tried to.
-
Okay, have you watched any National Geographic video? I think
-
you have not been to an eagle's nest. But you
-
all know how it looks like? How fierce the eagle
-
will be? So think about, you know, now, the
-
theological implication of this. When our life, like in
-
Genesis 1 verse 2, feels like there's no form and void,
-
there's darkness, there's void and it's in chaos. Know that
-
the Spirit of God, know that the Holy Spirit is
-
not afar. It is hovering. He is close to us.
-
enough to actually protect us or help us through even
-
the chaos of our life. Waiting for us
-
to say, help me, Holy Spirit, help me, God.
-
So that, you know, order and deliverance can come in
-
through that void and chaotic situation. Let's
-
look to Ezekiel chapter 37 verse 9. Another even powerful,
-
even reference of what raw is, okay? You guys
-
are there? Alright, let's read it together. In 1, 2
-
and 3. Prophesy to the breast, prophesy son of man,
-
and say to it that this is what the sovereign... Okay.
-
Verse 9, yeah. Sorry, Ezekiel chapter 37 verse 9. Yeah.
-
All right, let's read it together in 1, 2 and 3.
-
Prophesy to the breath, prophesy son of man and say
-
to it, this is what the sovereign Lord says, come
-
breath from the four winds and breathe into this slain
-
that they may live.
So when the roar of
-
God When the spirit of God Enters these dead bones
-
It didn't just put flesh But it
-
caused something cause them up, cause it to stand up
-
into a living army. And you know, before this verse,
-
God had to ask the prophet Ezekiel, can these bones live?
-
Sometimes we ask ourselves, what can come out of this?
-
It's just a valley of dry bones.
-
-
But God commanded Prophet Ezekiel to prophesy into the bones.
-
I don't know what situations we are at at
-
the moment. Or you are in at the moment.
-
It may look like a valley of dry bones.
-
Maybe, you know, dreams that you once had are
-
now dead. The faith that you have now may
-
feel dry and brittle. And you know, church, I
-
have you know, seen and noticed, the amount of help
-
that we can get from around us will not fix
-
the problems. Because every, you know, solutions that we can
-
get out of this world, it's just a temporal help.
-
What the experts can help you through it as well
-
is temporal. All we need to have as believers is
-
the spirit, the ruach of God. That is able, not
-
what God says, that is able to resurrect what is temporary.
-
Alright, so we're going to move and transition now
-
From the temporary Okay, you're like, huh? What's that? Alright,
-
that's my second point From the temporary to permanent
Alright, in Psalm Let's turn to Psalm 51, verse
-
Psalm 51, 11. If you're there, you can
-
say yes. Alright, let's read it together in 1, 2
-
and 3. Do not cast me away from your presence
-
and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Alright. Alright.
-
So who is this me? So who is this me?
-
It was King David, right? And we know what happened
-
to him. He wrote this after he has committed sin.
-
So in the Old Testament, the Spirit of God was
-
given to different ones at different points of time for
-
different specific needs. So it was In a way, temporary
-
because he can be removed from them. And David
-
had to pray that because he was afraid that the
-
Spirit of God would leave. And you know, in
-
other parts of the Bible, Word of God as well,
-
the Spirit of God was also referred to the presence
-
of God.
-
-
Was only confined to, limited to buildings and places. His glory.
-
His Shekinah glory will dwell behind the thick curtains in
-
the Holy of Holies. And in Old Testament, people who
-
wanted to experience His glory, presence and His glory. They
-
will travel all the way to one location which is
-
in Jerusalem. Then, you know, they have to bring
-
the sacrifices of animals and their crops or whatever and
-
give it to a priest. And they were hoping
-
that hopefully my sacrifice is acceptable. And the only person
-
that is able to enter to that glory, the Holy
-
of Holies, is also the priest. So in the Old Testament,
-
the Holy Spirit was limited. Sorry, I should correct myself.
-
Not limited, but temporary because it has different tasks to achieve.
-
But now in the New Testament, when Jesus arrived, He
-
became the game changer, okay? Let's look to John chapter 14,
-
verse 16 to 17. If you're there, you can say yes.
-
Verse 16, it says here, let's read it together. One,
-
two and three. And I will pray the Father and
-
He will give you another helper that He may abide
-
with you forever. The Spirit of truth whom the world
-
cannot receive because neither sees Him nor knows Him. But
-
you know Him for He dwells with you and will
-
be in you. Let's read 1 Corinthians 14, 16, and
-
17 together. 1 Corinthians 14, 16, 17 Alright, so Jesus
-
being the game changer, you know, he said this before
-
the night of his crucifixion. And I'm very sure that
-
his disciples that was close to him, he was saying
-
this to his disciples, right? They were terrified. Because anyone
-
of you, I mean, if you have a close friend,
-
your family member will just tell you, okay, tomorrow I'll
-
be leaving, I will no longer be around anymore. And,
-
you know, you're like, oh no, what's going to happen now? And,
-
you know, It might be the valley of dry bones,
-
even for His disciples. But Jesus looked at them
-
and promised this, that totally changed human history after.
-
So this very important word here, He didn't even say
-
the Holy Spirit yet, but He just calls him another helper.
-
The word another in Elos is Elos in Greek. Alright,
-
it actually means another of a same exact kind, quality
-
and nature. So if, you know, I ask Yanyi, okay,
-
can you help me look for Musang King durian? Yanyi,
-
Alright, and I think the Rao Pahang one is
-
known to be the best quality. But then
-
she'll come back, okay, it's not in the season now
-
for Pahang. Can I get the Mosang King
-
from Penang? That's my hometown. It has the same exact
-
kind and quality and nature. So Jesus says, I am leaving. Guys,
-
dear disciples, I am leaving but I am sending you Another,
-
that's someone exactly like me. That has my same nature.
-
And my power. And even my love for you. And
-
the word, the other word, right? So another helper, all right?
-
And some versions in the Bible uses counsellor. So
-
the Greek word for helper here is actually Paracletus.
-
It is actually a legal military term. So the
-
meaning of Paracletus is he is our advocate. He
-
is our defense attorney, right? So if there is
-
a case against you and you stand beyond, you know,
-
in front of a whole hostile courtroom. The defense attorney
-
will fight on your behalf. Then everything come against you
-
will be there to fight on your behalf. And it's
-
also used in a military term because it's like a
-
veteran soldier, all right? Who would still stand back to
-
back when a junior soldier has to go into a
-
chaotic battlefield. You will no longer have
-
to go into a chaotic battlefield alone. What it
-
means by veteran soldier means they have all the experience, right?
-
And they will know best, you know, how to
-
fight the enemy. That's the Holy Spirit. That's the helper
-
that has been promised to us. So we... no longer have,
-
you know, Jesus was telling His disciples and I'm also
-
letting us know that we do not have to travel
-
to a specific temple to find the Shekinah glory. We
-
no longer have to pray in a way like David,
-
terrified that the Spirit will leave us. So the advocate,
-
the helper, It's living in us right now. Not just
-
in a building, in a temple. But in our body. Why?
-
You know, the Apostle Paul confirms this in 1 Corinthians 6,
-
verse 19. Is it here? Or do you not
-
know that your body is the temple of the Holy
-
Spirit who is in you, whom you have got, and
-
you are not your own?
-
So the creator of the universe who was there at
-
the beginning, the Ruach of God that was hovering across
-
the waters of the earth is permanently with us. So
-
know that wherever we go right now, into our campuses,
-
in our schools, in our place, our families, the housing
-
area that you live in, We carry the presence
-
of God with us. Even the darkest alley may
-
think that any ghost will jump out at you. He
-
carries his presence there as well. Maybe not so
-
afraid of ghosts, like cockroaches will start flying towards you, right?
-
Know that.
-
The presence of God is with you there. The third point,
-
you know, I started with that, that He is a
-
divine person. The Holy Spirit is a person that we
-
need to know intimately. Not a power to be used.
-
Because we ain't know any Avengers, right? I don't know.
-
Never mind. From Marvel. Okay, we donate him because... We
-
don't need just the power, but we need to know
-
Him personally. So because the Holy Spirit dwells within us,
-
we need to know how to relate to Him. Like
-
in any friendship, relationship, you know, husband, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, once.
-
In a way, you get together, but even before you
-
get together, you learn how to relate with each other.
-
-
We can only relate to a person. If the
-
Holy Spirit is just a force, 如果这个圣灵它只是一个能量而已的话, Like electricity, 就好像电这样。
-
We cannot have relationship with electricity. You can try.
-
I think you'll be badly electrocuted, okay? Electricity,
-
you can switch on and off, on and off, right?
-
But not the work of the Holy Spirit in
-
our life. Not the power of Holy Spirit that
-
can work in and through our life. So we cannot
-
just have to say like, okay, I want the benefits
-
of him as my helper without wanting him in our life.
-
Very easy, when crisis hits us. I have a
-
final year project to finish, my thesis to write. God,
-
first help me, I need you.
-
Things are coming.
-
And falling apart. God, I need you. So a lot
-
of times, we just want him to be at work
-
but not wanting him in our lives. To know how
-
to relate to him, we need to know the characteristics
-
of his personhood. You're like, okay, I know this person's
-
character so I understand him more. So we're going to
-
Know of his character, characteristics. Yes. Okay. First is
-
from 1 Corinthians 2, verse 10 to 11. 1 Corinthians 2,
-
verse 10 to 11. Okay, I'll read it. But
-
God has revealed them to us through His Holy Spirit.
-
For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things
-
of God. For what man knows the things of a
-
man except the Spirit of man which is in him?
-
Even so, no one knows the things of God except
-
the Spirit of God. Alright, so the Holy Spirit, the
-
first point, the first characteristic is the Holy Spirit has
-
an intellect. He is not just a blind force.
-
According to these two verses, he possesses the infinite,
-
unsatiable wisdom of God. And he knows the mind
-
of the Father. So that, In simple terms, he
-
will take the things of God and because he knows
-
the Father, he will reveal it to us and help
-
us understand the Father more. Probably, you know, a lot
-
of times our lives is in pieces. Because we do
-
not have the Holy Spirit with us. We can easily
-
read the Bible from cover to cover. Know the Bible
-
inside out. But our life is not changed. Our actions
-
does not show it.
-
Why?
-
Perhaps when we read it, we are not asking God, God,
-
can you reveal to me your heart through your word?
-
And sometimes you read, you don't understand. Okay, I just
-
read through like any novel that I'm reading. And you
-
just read it but you just don't understand. And when
-
you don't understand, it does not sink in and transform us.
-
But then when we read the Bible and the verses
-
start leaping out to us and we.
-
Fully can understand it and apply it into our lives.
-
That's the intellect of the Holy Spirit teaching us. Okay,
-
second characteristic of the Holy Spirit is from 1 Corinthians 12,
-
verse 11. Okay, if you're there, you can say yes.
-
1 Corinthians 12, verse 11. And we shall read it together. Yes. Yes. Okay,
-
in 1, 2 and 3. But one and the same
-
Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually
-
as He wills. Alright, so the Holy Spirit,
-
the second characteristic of Him is He has a will.
So He is like... The executing person of the church.
-
The sovereign executor of the church. And our lives as well.
-
He determines and decides where we serve. what giftings we
-
are given and how we use it. And the Spirit
-
also is very instrumental in how the gospel advances as well.
-
In Acts chapter 16, we can see that the Holy
Acts 16 chapter mention
-
Spirit actually forbid Paul to preach in Asia. So he
-
has a will 所以他是有自己的一个意志能力。 And he actually makes sovereign choices also.
-
His third characteristic is in Ephesians chapter 4 verse 30.
-
Let's turn to that. And if you are ready,
-
we can read it together. Ready? Okay, in 1,
-
2 and 3. Grieve the Holy Spirit of God by
-
whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Alright, so it says here, and do not grieve
-
the Holy Spirit of God. Why? Because the
-
Holy Spirit has emotions. Let's think of the word grief.
-
If what we think the Holy Spirit is just
-
a force. And it is just like your gravity force.
-
The force of gravity. And if you drop.
-
A book, okay? I wanted to drop my Bible, but
-
I shouldn't, okay? Drop a Bible, the gravity won't feel
-
it at all. Alright, we cannot grieve gravity, although it's
-
a force. We cannot grieve electricity, although it's a force.
-
We cannot grieve electricity, although it's a force.
-
So the Holy Spirit is a person, hence he can
-
actually be grieved. And we can only grieve someone
-
when the person is so deeply and profoundly love you.
-
Grieve them, break their heart Because they really
-
really care for you And the depth of
-
the grief of the person Or you know the brokenness
-
of the person It's also dependent on how much and
-
how close they are with you, right?
-
So a lot of times, let me give an
-
example in relationships. Either, you know, in the analogy
-
of a marriage or friendship as well. Or in families.
-
A lot of times, we avoid doing things that
-
you know... will not make the person happy and you know,
-
you'll break rules. And maybe usually that happens at the
-
early stage of any relationship. You're like, okay, I understand
-
this person. For example, like, loves the car so much
-
that I cannot eat. And snack in the car. So,
-
out of care for the person's feeling, okay lah, I
-
don't break that rule lah. But as relationship deepens with
-
the person, you don't just do things to avoid from
-
breaking rules, but you don't do things that will break
-
the person's heart. Let me bring it closer to our
-
relationship with God. And I want to bring this to
-
this focus and area of sin. Alright. We don't just
-
avoid Sinning against God because God will punish us. Or
-
sometimes you're like, okay, you know, I avoid sinning because
-
I don't go to hell. That's a punishment, right? It's
-
a consequence of our action. But the perspective of a
-
personal relationship is this. that I do not want to
-
sin because I do not want to bring sorrow to
-
this person, to God which, you know, bring sorrow to
-
this person of the Holy Spirit, okay? This third person
-
in the Trinity. I do not want to bring sorrow
-
to this intimate God person that is living inside of me.
-
When we harbor bitterness towards someone. I don't know.
-
You know, I was just preparing this. Maybe, you know,
-
some of us harboring bitterness towards a family member.
-
Unrepented lust, that is sin. Sometimes we engage in gossip
-
and slander the church, gossip and slander each other, you know,
-
that's the sin. And know that we are not just
-
breaking a theological rule. I'm not breaking, not, you know,
-
just what the Bible is telling me not to do.
-
But we are causing the third person of the Trinity
-
that is living in us to weep, to grieve.
-
We are causing pain. to the person who is supposed
-
to be our dearest friend and our advocate to grieve.
-
You know, to know the Holy Spirit means... I'm going
-
to close already. To know the Holy Spirit means... We
-
need to learn how to walk with Him daily. You know,
-
ask Him every day, Holy Spirit, what brings you joy today?
-
Have you asked that before in the morning?
-
Really?
-
Really? That's why he's always, you know, the forgotten one.
-
Or wake up in the morning and ask, Holy Spirit,
-
what can I do today that honors your presence in
-
my life? A lot of times, sometimes in
-
the morning you wake up like, God, I need help.
-
Or sometimes it's okay like, God, good morning. Very
-
rare we will say good morning, Holy Spirit. Very
-
rare we'll ask, you know, today, thank you for giving
-
me breath. What can I do today to honour your
-
presence in my life? Alright, so I'll close with this.
-
Acts chapter 1 verse 8. But you will receive
-
power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. Sorry, the
-
Holy Spirit is here. The Holy Spirit is with us.
-
You know, we don't have to be continuously exhausted, you know,
-
trying to live life on our own. You know, we
-
don't always try and try. It's like pushing a car.
-
You're trying to push. A car uphill. Maybe it's
-
not functioning. Okay, let me just try with all my
-
effort to push it uphill. And I'm very,
-
very sure however much we try, we won't be able
-
to push it up. But a lot of
-
times we forget, 欸, actually I forget to put the
-
ignition key in. I forget to start the engine.
-
When the engine is ignited, that's where power comes into
-
the car. So we don't have to go
-
on in our faith, you know, trying... To be like
-
the person to keep pushing the car uphill. Actually, we've
-
just forgotten to ignite. Oh, now you know
-
a lot is just push up button. You forget to
-
just switch on. Hallelujah. You know, today, I just
-
want to encourage us to surrender. Why we need
-
to surrender? We need to surrender and invite the Holy
-
Spirit into our life. Because the Spirit of God will
-
not force His way into the driver's seat of our life.
-
He is a gentleman. We need to invite Him to
-
be part of our life. We need to tell ourselves,
-
I need to involve the Holy Spirit. And if you
-
want to see revival happen, first in our life, we
-
need the Holy Spirit's help. And to know Him, to
-
understand who He is as well.
