Want to quickly share as um as we've been going through this Who's Your One series, my personal awareness of people around me has greatly increased.
-
I am meeting up with lost friends I haven't seen in a long time.
-
I'm having conversations with new people I had never met before.
-
I mean, to me, it's it's incredible to see how God moves when you actually follow his word and align with his desires, right?
-
Shocking, right?
-
I'm sure it's blowing people's minds away, but but it's so amazing to see that he he the way he does these things.
-
In fact, one of the areas uh I personally started to become more intentional about is my community's clubhouse area and and the gym that I go to in the community.
-
My my main thing is I I want to start friendships with more people who don't know Jesus right in my backyard.
-
Right?
-
So I here's a very spiritual, very strategic, you know, your pastor, the gym missionary, right?
-
Uh so this week, I'm I'm I'm you know, earlier this week, I'm at my gym at my usual time, and uh this guy walks in.
-
This guy that I haven't seen in like two years.
-
And this isn't just some random guy.
-
This is a guy who caused some real damage between me and a couple of really good friends of mine.
-
I had actually, well, let's put it this way I had filed him away under not worth it.
-
So I see him walk into the gym, and I did what any mature, spirit-filled pastor would do.
-
I snupped him.
-
The whole workout, head down, earbuds in.
-
I mean, I gotta tell you, I have never been so interested doing leg presses in my entire life.
-
I just snubbed him and didn't even look at him.
-
And then my phone buzzes.
-
It's a text message from Sarah, my wife.
-
And she says something in the text message.
-
She said, Maybe he's one of your ones that God wants you to reach.
-
And in my head, I said, Oh, not a chance.
-
Church, that's your pastor talking.
-
We're four weeks into this series called Who's Your One?
-
And just this past week, that was my reaction.
-
So I know this can be challenging.
-
I go through two.
-
Look, three weeks ago, Jesus showed us in our first sermon in this series, Jesus showed us that He throwed that heaven throws a party over one lost sheep coming home.
-
In other words, one lost soul coming to faith in Jesus.
-
Two weeks ago, a lot of you started writing names on tags, and we've been hanging it on that tree out there in the lobby, praying for those lost souls.
-
These are friends, family members, coworkers, neighbors.
-
Look, that that tree, I even this morning, I walk in this morning, the bowl is filled with new names to be added to the tree.
-
These are people's lives at stake, their souls at stake that we are praying for every single week.
-
Last week, we saw how Jesus was walked into a locked room and he said to his disciples, as the Father has sent me, I am sending you.
-
So we learned that we are a sent people.
-
Each and every one of us, if we are in Christ, we are a sent people.
-
And I know, last Sunday, some of you walked out of here, you're like, okay, Pastor, I've got a name.
-
I know that I'm sent.
-
But now what do I actually do when Monday morning comes around?
-
So the passage we're in this morning, the passage we're gonna dive into answers that question.
-
See, most of what the New Testament says about evangelism either tells us to go or it shows us somebody going.
-
The passage we're gonna be looking at this morning is one of the few places where Paul sits down and tells ordinary Christians how.
-
In fact, I'd argue it's probably the clearest how to in the whole New Testament when it comes to evangelism and reaching the lost.
-
So if you have Bibles, you can open up to Colossians chapter four, or you can follow along on the screen with us.
-
Colossians chapter four.
-
And we're gonna be starting in verse 2.
-
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
-
And pray for us too that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ for which I am in chains.
-
Pray that I may proclaim it clearly as I should.
-
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders.
-
Make the most of every opportunity.
-
Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
-
Now, when Paul wrote this, he was a prisoner, most likely in Rome, under house arrest.
-
And a prisoner like Paul was usually chained to a Roman soldier.
-
And while he's in chains, look at what he asked for.
-
Verse 3 again, he says, Pray for us too, that God may open a door for our message.
-
He doesn't ask God to open his door.
-
He asks God to open the door for the message.
-
He'd rather get the that the gospel would get out rather than he get out of prison.
-
That's what he's praying for.
-
Now, look, this morning, I'm not going to spend a whole lot of time on prayer.
-
We we went through that uh about two weeks ago on a Sunday.
-
So you can go back to that sermon online and look at it.
-
But look, I one thing I don't want you to miss.
-
Paul starts here.
-
Before he says one word about how to talk to an outsider, he says pray.
-
So clearly, reaching the lost starts on our knees.
-
And notice something else.
-
Who does the opening?
-
God does.
-
Contrary to what you might believe, you can't open your lost one's heart.
-
I can't either.
-
I've tried.
-
Only God opens the door.
-
And actually, that takes a lot of pressure, that takes so much pressure off of you.
-
Because the ultimate outcomes aren't on you.
-
It's on God.
-
Which frees us to pray.
-
In fact, it frees us to walk, to speak to our lost ones while trusting God with the outcomes.
-
So this morning, I want to focus really on two things that Paul gives us from this particular passage.
-
I want to focus on the way and the words of reaching your lost one.
-
Okay, so first we're gonna focus on the way.
-
Verse five, it says, be wise in the way you act toward outsiders.
-
Make the most of every opportunity.
-
Be wise in the way you act.
-
See, the word Paul actually uses here is walk.
-
Walk wisely toward outsiders.
-
It's the same word he uses back in chapter two in the same letter.
-
Continue to live your lives in him.
-
In other words, continue to walk in him, in him being Jesus.
-
So walking with Jesus and walking toward outsiders is part of the same walk.
-
And let me clarify this.
-
Outsiders is Paul's word for talking about people who are outside the family of God.
-
This isn't a put down, it's about location.
-
Paul is telling us to walk towards those who are outside the family of God.
-
Emphasis on towards.
-
Here's why I say that.
-
He's not saying, you know, not past them, not go around them, don't wait for them to come to you.
-
He's saying go towards them.
-
And you do it wisely.
-
Be wise in the way you talk, you the way you walk toward outsiders.
-
So what is the wisdom?
-
What is this wisdom he's actually talking about?
-
Now look, it's not the same as being smart.
-
I know plenty of really smart people who are not wise.
-
In fact, I've been one of them.
-
See, wisdom is, let me put it this way, wisdom is Bible truth with street smarts.
-
It's knowing the right thing to do with the right person at the right time for Jesus.
-
And Paul tells us a couple chapters earlier in the same book where to get it.
-
In chapter two, he says this: he says, In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
-
So, you want wisdom toward outsiders?
-
You get close to Jesus.
-
You watch how he does it.
-
In fact, I want us to look at one of the ways he does it.
-
In John 4, in the Gospel of John, in John 4, Jesus, he is headed north to Galilee.
-
And John says in verse 4, now he had to go through Samaria.
-
He had to.
-
See, John told us that Jews do not associate with the Samaritans.
-
Okay?
-
Jews and Samaritans hated each other.
-
Centuries of bad blood.
-
They had different temples, there were different mountains.
-
Each side was sure the other side was going to go to hell.
-
And Jesus had to go through Samaria.
-
Jacob's well was there.
-
And Jesus, he's making this long journey.
-
He's tired.
-
He's tired from this journey.
-
He sits down by the well.
-
It's about noontime.
-
And understand, noon, hottest part of the day.
-
So Jesus, he's done this long journey.
-
He's tired.
-
He sits down by this well and he's thirsty.
-
And here comes this woman, a Samaritan woman.
-
She's come into the well alone in the hottest part of the day, probably because she knew no one else would be around.
-
And you find out later in this story that she's had five husbands, and the man she's living with right now isn't her husband.
-
So her own people have treated her basically like an outsider on every account.
-
And respect so the Samaritans treat her like an outsider.
-
Jewish people, I mean, a respectable Jewish rabbi would not be caught dead talking to her.
-
And here you have Jesus sitting there, waiting.
-
And he made time for.
-
Listen, reaching your lost ones, it takes time.
-
It takes relational investment on your part.
-
There needs to be genuine trust and relational credit if you want them to hear what you have to say about Jesus.
-
So it takes time.
-
And I know, look, I know most of us have our list of reasons we don't walk toward anybody.
-
I don't have time.
-
They won't listen.
-
I don't know what to say.
-
I don't want to be that guy.
-
And some of us maybe have one more that they wouldn't say out loud, like myself.
-
They're not worth it.
-
I mean, I've used every one of these.
-
But let me ask you something.
-
Do you remember the first time you came to Jesus?
-
Do you remember that moment?
-
I mean, you you probably couldn't shut up about him.
-
You told your parents, you told your friends, you told the guy that that was next to you on the bus.
-
I mean, you didn't have much theology yet.
-
You didn't have have everything figured out perfectly yet.
-
You just knew you had been found and you got, you had to let everybody know.
-
You were so pumped about it.
-
I mean, I know when I first came to faith, I was pumped.
-
I wanted to tell everybody, I went to shout it from the mountaintops that Jesus is Lord.
-
But then, as time went on, it slowly started to fizzle away.
-
Maybe you got busy, you got comfortable, you made church friends, and the people outside stopped being people you knew.
-
They became people you drove past.
-
And I think, at least in part, it's because we forgot what it's like to be on the outside.
-
And church people, I'll tell you, are the worst at this.
-
Myself included.
-
Right?
-
We've got we got church small groups, we got church breakfasts, we got church events, we got church friends, and look, nothing is wrong with any of that.
-
Those are all good things.
-
But if your whole life revolves just around church people, who's left to hear about Jesus?
-
Who's left?
-
Church, it is time we started walking toward outsiders.
-
It's time for us to start walking toward outsiders.
-
In fact, when we do, we need to make the most of every opportunity.
-
That's what Paul says in this passage.
-
Make the most of every opportunity.
-
Sei the opportunity.
-
The idea is in this verse is to buy up the opportunity.
-
Don't waste.
-
This is what Paul is trying to get at.
-
Do not waste the moments God has given you.
-
In Ephesians, Paul says the same thing, and he tells us why.
-
He says, making the most of every opportunity.
-
Why?
-
Because the days are evil.
-
Listen, church.
-
There are some doors that won't stay open forever.
-
Your coworker transfers, maybe out of state.
-
Your neighbor moves away.
-
Your kid leaves for college.
-
And look, none of us knows how long we've got or how long your lost one has got.
-
And look, I'm not saying this to try and put you into a panic.
-
I'm saying this to get you to pay attention.
-
Pay attention to what God is doing around you.
-
Remember what God, what Paul says in verse 2 and 3, be watchful in prayer and ask God to open doors.
-
We need to be looking for these doors to be open.
-
We need to be praying and asking God, God, open these doors.
-
And then we need to be seizing those moments, seizing those opportunities.
-
But church, we've gotten so busy and so consumed with ourselves that we walk right past opportunities that God may be opening for us all around us.
-
And look, I'll tell you this.
-
I believe this in everything, with everything in me.
-
I believe this so deeply that for each and every single one of you, God has placed you in a particular place at a particular time for a particular person or persons.
-
Are you hearing me?
-
God has placed each and every one of you in a particular place at a particular time for a particular person.
-
So walk toward them.
-
Walk toward them.
-
Walk toward them where you live.
-
Your streets, your building, the neighbor you you wave at, or you know, give the head nod and don't really know them.
-
Walk toward them.
-
Walk toward them where where you work.
-
The lady at the cubicle across from you.
-
Or the guy at the next register, or the nurse on your shift, the partner down the hall, or the classmate at the desk next to you.
-
Walk toward them where you work.
-
And walk toward them where you play.
-
For me, it's the gym.
-
Could be the barbershop, the nail salon, the pickleball courts, the football game, the same restaurant you eat at every single Friday.
-
In fact, small, small sidebar, I'm at the gym again.
-
This guy looks at me and he, you know, kind of gives me the head nod.
-
I give him the head nod back.
-
But then I realize I think he knows me.
-
Do I know him?
-
I don't know.
-
Do I know this guy?
-
Anyways, I awkwardly walk over and I'm like, hey, good to see ya.
-
And he's like, yeah, yeah, great to see you.
-
I'm like, I gotta ask, what's your name again?
-
And he gives me his name.
-
I'm like, I don't know who this guy is.
-
This was on a Monday.
-
I found out who this guy was yesterday.
-
He works at a sushi restaurant I eat at fairly regularly.
-
I had no idea.
-
But now I'm at the restaurant, I'm having a conversation with this guy.
-
And guess what?
-
He's gonna be one of my people.
-
He's gonna be one of my people that I try to reach.
-
So walk toward them where you live, where you work, where you play.
-
In fact, just start pick one place.
-
Same place, same time, every week.
-
Show up on purpose.
-
Pray for open doors and watch for them.
-
And when God opens one, seize the moment.
-
Seize the moment.
-
Pray, walk, and speak.
-
Now let's look at the words.
-
We've looked at the way.
-
I want to look at the words.
-
Verse six.
-
Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
-
Now, salt, if anyone's a cook here, you would know that salt doesn't do much sitting in the cabinet.
-
Right?
-
It's gotta get close to the food.
-
Likewise, your words can't season a conversation you never walk into.
-
Paul says, speak full of grace, seasoned with salt, always.
-
Not just on a Sunday, not just when the pastor's watching, always.
-
Even if you're in the public's parking lot when somebody takes the spot that you were clearly waiting for, you still, even in those moments, you speak full of grace.
-
Full of grace.
-
Not half full, not quarterful, not a pinch, full of grace.
-
And salty.
-
Now, I know salty for some of you young people means something very different.
-
I gotta say, it amazes me how the English language is just progressively getting butchered more and more and more.
-
Anyways, salty.
-
When you guys hear salty, you young people, I see some of you young people over there, maybe a few over there, when you hear that, you're thinking bitter, annoyed, upset, usually over something really small.
-
That's not what Paul means here.
-
Look, full of grace means your words are kind.
-
They are for the other person.
-
Seasoned with salt means they've got some flavor.
-
They make people think.
-
And look, again, one of the best ways to see how this plays out, watch how Jesus does it.
-
I mean, let's go back to the Samaritan woman.
-
He's tired, you know, he's tired, he's thirsty, it's noon.
-
What are his first words to this woman?
-
He says, Will you give me a drink?
-
He doesn't start with a sermon.
-
He asks her for help.
-
Again, this is the woman who's got, who's had five husbands, and the woman she's living with right now, not her husband.
-
He doesn't start off with a sermon, he doesn't start off with a reprimand, he doesn't start off with anything like he asks her for help.
-
That's grace.
-
He's honoring her.
-
And understand, nobody honors this woman.
-
Yet the Son of God sits there and lets her do something for him.
-
And she can't believe it.
-
She says to him, You're a Jew, and I'm a Samaritan woman.
-
How can you ask me for a drink?
-
And then Jesus, he adds the salt.
-
He says, if you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks, that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him.
-
And he would have given you living water.
-
Now what does he do there?
-
What does he do there?
-
He's made her curious.
-
Living water?
-
Who is this guy?
-
That's salt.
-
He doesn't push.
-
He makes her want to know more.
-
Now look, Jesus then does say a horror truth.
-
Truth, go call your husband and come back.
-
Well, I have no husband, she says.
-
Jesus says, You're right.
-
You've had five, and the man you're with now isn't your husband.
-
You see, Jesus knew.
-
He knew everything, and he didn't leave.
-
He didn't leave her.
-
He didn't treat her horribly.
-
He honored her.
-
He gave her grace and salt at the same time.
-
He told her the truth about her life and he stayed in the conversation.
-
So, what does she do next?
-
Well, she changes the subject.
-
Like what most of us do when things start to get way too close down here, right?
-
Tend to deflect and we change the subject.
-
She says, our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.
-
Basically, what she's doing here, let's argue about church.
-
And a lot of us, if we've been in the church for any length of time, we like to argue about church.
-
We like to argue about denomination.
-
We like to argue about all those things.
-
We stop focusing on the essentials and start focusing on all the secondary and tertiary issues.
-
So she's trying to argue about church.
-
Now he answers her, but he's not going to let it turn into an argument.
-
He tells her, he tells her a day is coming when it won't be about this mountain or that mountain.
-
It'll be about worshiping the Father in spirit and in truth.
-
And then she says, I know that the Messiah is coming.
-
And when he comes, he will explain everything to us.
-
And then Jesus says it.
-
See, that's the prayer in verse 4.
-
Pray that I may proclaim it clearly.
-
And look, this is more important than I would imagine many of you realize.
-
I learned this the hard way of what it looks like when you don't make it clear.
-
Let me share a quick story.
-
Early on in India, nobody had ever trained me on how to share the gospel.
-
I just loved Jesus and I loved people, and I want to see lost people come to faith in Jesus.
-
I had a friend there.
-
For years we met for lunch and for coffees.
-
We talked about work.
-
We talked about family.
-
We talked about our life.
-
And I would tell him what Jesus was doing in my life.
-
But the thing I kept coming back to was man, oh God, God, God's got a bigger purpose for you.
-
He's got a plan for you.
-
He's got a big purpose for you.
-
You are special.
-
And God's got a plan and purpose for your life.
-
And he loved it.
-
He was eating it up.
-
He started agreeing with me.
-
He started leaning in.
-
And then one day he messaged me, Rajiv, let's meet today.
-
I've got big news.
-
It's about God's purpose for me.
-
I thought, yes, finally, praise God.
-
He's got it.
-
He's going to be saved today.
-
And I'm running, I'm practically running to this lunch.
-
And he sits down and he's glowing.
-
He says, Rajiv, I figured it out.
-
I found my purpose.
-
I found my God-given purpose.
-
Let me give you some context.
-
He worked for one of the biggest banks in the world.
-
His boss had asked him for somebody to lead a huge global initiative.
-
DEI programs for LGBTQ.
-
He would travel to various countries.
-
He would speak everywhere.
-
He would change the world.
-
And he said, this is it.
-
This is God's purpose for me.
-
And I'm sitting there smiling.
-
And in my head, I'm going, oh, what did I do?
-
Years of lunches.
-
Years of coffee.
-
And I never made Jesus clear.
-
He heard God has a plan for you.
-
He never heard about sin.
-
He never heard about the cross.
-
He never heard what it means to be made right with God.
-
Look, God has a plan for your life.
-
That's true.
-
Just isn't the gospel.
-
It isn't the good news of the kingdom of God and how we can be a part of it.
-
And look, a fuzzy message?
-
Let my friend fill in the blank with his own dream.
-
I walked with him for two years, never made it clear.
-
So I want to make it clear to you this morning.
-
I don't want you going down and making the same mistake that I've made.
-
Paul says, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
-
So what do you actually say?
-
Look, let me say that look, Jesus didn't have a one-size-fits-all script.
-
Right?
-
He talked to Nicodemus at night about being born again.
-
He talked to this woman at noon about water.
-
Same Jesus, same gospel, but a different door, different opportunity each time.
-
So here's what I would start off with.
-
Start by asking questions.
-
Get to know the person.
-
Get to know their hopes and dreams, their loves, what they trust in.
-
Get to know their beliefs.
-
In fact, get to know the why behind their beliefs.
-
Be genuinely genuinely curious about them.
-
Be genuinely curious about them.
-
Ask them, how are you really doing?
-
Like, how are you really doing?
-
Ask questions like, hey, you know, is there something I can pray for you about?
-
I'll tell you this.
-
No matter what faith background you come from, or no faith background at all, if you ask someone, what can I pray for you about?
-
nine out of ten times, maybe almost nearly 10 out of 10 times, they're gonna give you something to pray about.
-
That's a good way to start a conversation.
-
Maybe ask the question do you think of yourself as a spiritual person?
-
What gives you hope when life gets heavy?
-
What do you think about Jesus?
-
Maybe you can be that direct.
-
Look, none of these questions needs a seminary degree or anything like that.
-
Just ask curious questions and then listen.
-
And I mean really listen.
-
And when the door opens, seize the opportunity.
-
Make it clear of how a lost person can be found.
-
And look, if you're here this morning and you don't know Jesus yet, I'm not just teaching, teaching the people in this church who have been coming here for a long time.
-
I'm not just teaching them how to say this.
-
I'm saying it to you too.
-
And look, it can be as simple as this.
-
Ready for your note-takers?
-
It can be as simple as this.
-
God made us for himself.
-
But all of us have turned our backs on him.
-
Romans 3.23.
-
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
-
All have sinned.
-
Not some, not just a few of us, the guy who's done time, and the guy who's never had a parking ticket.
-
All.
-
All have sinned.
-
Every one of us has turned our back on God.
-
That's what being lost means.
-
And listen, you can't fix this by being good.
-
You can't work your way back.
-
Ephesians 2, 8, verse 9, 2, Ephesians 2, verses 8 and 9.
-
It is by grace.
-
Listen to this.
-
It is by grace you have been saved through faith, not by your works.
-
Why?
-
So that no one can boast.
-
Grace means God gives you what you could never earn.
-
Jesus came and lived the life we could not live.
-
He died on the cross for our sin, and he rose from the dead.
-
And in John 14, 6, Jesus says, I am the way, the truth, and the life.
-
No one comes to the Father except through me.
-
And let me make that really clear.
-
Jesus is not a way, he is the way, he is the only way.
-
There is no other way.
-
So turn from trying to be your own master over your own life.
-
Turn from your sin and trust Jesus.
-
Declare him as Lord.
-
And when you do that, understand God forgives you.
-
But listen, he doesn't just forgive you.
-
He brings you into the family.
-
He brings you home.
-
He makes you his child.
-
That's the good news.
-
Now look, when you're in a relationship with these people, with your friends and your family members who are lost, I'm not saying you gotta say all of these key points every single time you meet up with them.
-
Use some wisdom on when and how you share different aspects of those points.
-
And look, I'll tell you this, they're gonna ask more and more questions.
-
Don't be afraid of that.
-
They're gonna ask questions you don't know the answer to.
-
That's okay.
-
You don't have to know the answer to every question every time.
-
But do tell them this.
-
Hey, I don't know.
-
But I'll find out and I'll get back to you.
-
Or even better, let's find out together.
-
Let's figure this out together.
-
Look, and you'll come to find out most people have one or two, maybe three real questions that they're wrestling with.
-
And you spend enough time with your one, you're gonna find out what theirs is.
-
In fact, that's why in about two weeks from today, we're gonna be starting a new series focusing on apologetics.
-
We're basically gonna battle and tackle the common questions that people have when it comes to God, Jesus, and the faith of Christianity.
-
We're gonna take real questions that your lost ones are asking and help bring answers.
-
So if you got questions, let me know what they are.
-
Bring me your questions.
-
In fact, better yet, bring me your one, bring your ones into church on Sundays, starting in two, well, you start now, but starting in definitely in two weeks.
-
Because we're gonna tackle a lot of these things and help equip you to better share your faith with the lost.
-
Be full of grace.
-
Seasoned with salt.
-
You know, it's important to actually say this as well, church.
-
Grace.
-
Let me say it like this.
-
Gracious words don't start in your mouth.
-
They start in your heart.
-
The mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
-
If your heart is full of grace, your words will be too.
-
And if your heart has decided, well, you know what, somebody isn't worth it, your mouth will show it.
-
Even if you never say a word.
-
Even if all you do is put your head down at the gym with your earbuds in.
-
So let me tell you about that guy again at the gym.
-
I want to kind of continue that story for a moment.
-
This past Wednesday night at our Bible study.
-
If some of you that were there probably saw in real time what happened to the pastor of this church, I started to teach through this very passage, Colossians 4.
-
Walk wisely toward outsiders, let your conversation always be full of grace.
-
And right there in the middle of teaching it, God convicted me like a ton of bricks.
-
Not worth it.
-
That's what I said in my head.
-
And underneath was something far uglier than that.
-
I thought I was better than him.
-
I did.
-
He's not worth it.
-
He's less than.
-
That's pride talking.
-
So Thursday morning, I sent him a text message.
-
I apologized for not saying hello, for not having a real conversation with him.
-
And then I said we should catch up sometime, maybe over lunch or coffee.
-
About two minutes later, he wrote back.
-
Yes, let's definitely catch up.
-
This week or next week, good for you?
-
Okay.
-
Great response.
-
Now I'd love to tell you, I would love to tell you that I prayed for him first.
-
I didn't.
-
God had to knock me down before I pray.
-
But over the next few days, the Spirit of God has been doing something.
-
He's been putting me on my knees for this man.
-
And my heart has started to soften toward him in a way I did not expect.
-
And the plan is for he and I to get together this week.
-
Now, look, I don't know how this is gonna end.
-
I don't know where the story ends up, but pray for me.
-
Because I'm human too.
-
I struggle with this stuff too.
-
But maybe more importantly, pray for him.
-
Because he doesn't know Jesus.
-
He doesn't have the hope that we have.
-
So yeah, pray for me, but pray for him.
-
God kept pressing on me all week.
-
Not worth it.
-
Rajiv, who do you think you are?
-
Because there was nothing in me that made me worth saving.
-
Not my background, not my resume, not my religion, nothing.
-
Here's the good news.
-
This was never about my worth.
-
This was never about the worth of the guy at the gym.
-
This was never about your worth.
-
It is about Jesus' worth and his worth alone.
-
He is the one who is worthy.
-
He is the one by through him we are made worthy.
-
Church, the woman at the well was looked down upon by just about everybody.
-
In fact, she probably looked down on herself.
-
And Jesus sat down at her well, thirsty.
-
You go to the end of John's gospel, Jesus hanging on a cross, and John tells us he says two words thirsty.
-
The same Jesus who sat thirsty at a well, offering living water to an outsider, hangs on a cross.
-
Thirsty.
-
He went thirsty so she could drink living water.
-
He went thirsty so you and I could drink living water.
-
Look, there has only ever been one person who was truly worthy, and we know it is Jesus.
-
In Revelation 5, all of heaven sings to Jesus, you are worthy because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
-
Purchased.
-
Jesus bought us with his own blood.
-
The worthy one went outside for the unworthy.
-
He took what we deserved so that he could give us what he deserved.
-
To present you holy in his sight.
-
Without blemish, free from accusation.
-
Holy without blemish and free from accusation.
-
That is how the Father sees you if you belong to Jesus.
-
Not through your past record, but through his son.
-
Everything Jesus is, everything he did, counted as yours.
-
So I don't walk toward the guy at the gym because I'm better than him.
-
I walk toward him because I'm not.
-
Somebody once said that evangelism is one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread.
-
This week, for me, it's about telling one thirsty man, oh, one thirsty man to another thirsty man where the living water is.
-
Now look, there's good news for us who keep failing at this.
-
Because I know some of you have been praying and walking towards outsiders, walking towards your loved ones who don't know Jesus.
-
You get frustrated, you get tired.
-
Sometimes you feel like giving up.
-
Sometimes you just keep making mistakes.
-
But here's the grace what God commands, his grace provides.
-
The same Jesus who tells us, tells you and me to walk towards outsiders.
-
Well, that same Jesus lives in you.
-
And he will make you able.
-
And look, if you're here this morning, you've been an outsider.
-
Maybe somebody brought you in this morning.
-
Maybe you've been sitting in the back of this church for weeks with your arms crossed.
-
Maybe you've desired decided that you're not worth it.
-
Listen to me.
-
You're that woman at the well.
-
Jesus already knows everything you've ever done.
-
And he hasn't left.
-
He's sitting here offering you living water.
-
He died for your sin.
-
He rose from the dead.
-
And he says, Come drink.
-
So turn from your sin and trust Jesus.
-
And church, every one of us has somebody in our life we've decided wasn't worth it anymore.
-
Maybe some of you have got a face in your mind right now.
-
I want you to remember this.
-
The grace that reached you on the outside is the grace you get to speak to them.
-
Look, somebody in this city, there's somebody in this city, at least one.
-
But I venture to say a lot more than one.
-
That I'm gonna spend forever with Jesus because you walk toward them.
-
You ask one more question, and full of grace, seasoned with salt, you spoke the message of Jesus clearly.
-
So this week, do three things pray it.
-
Lord, open a door with so-and-so.
-
Make Jesus clear.
-
Make me ready.
-
Pray it.
-
Walk it.
-
Pick your place where you live, work, or play.
-
Show up on purpose.
-
Seize those moments.
-
Speak it.
-
Ask questions.
-
Listen.
-
Add some salt to get them to think.
-
And when you get that moment, when you get that opportunity, share the truth of Jesus with them.
-
Church West Palm Beach is full of open doors.
-
And I venture to say it's gonna be full of open doors this week.
-
Let's walk through every single one that God opens.
-
Let's pray.
-
Father, I thank you this morning that you have commissioned us as your people to be as said people.
-
Help us to pray for open doors.
-
Help us to be watchful and have eyes to see those open doors all around us.
-
Empower us to walk through those doors and to buy up that moment to seize those moments to speak to the lost.
-
To share the beauty and hope and love and grace and mercy that is of you, God, that has come through your son Jesus.
-
And when those moments are right, help us to clearly share with them what it means to be a part of the kingdom of God and to be saved, to become children.
-
Father, we thank you.
-
And it's in your son's name we pray always.
-
Amen.
