  1. Please open your Bibles to the book of Ruth.

  2. We're back in Ruth.

  3. We did the first chapter two weeks ago.

  4. Heavenly Father,

  5. Heavenly Father,

  6. I am weak and inadequate,

  7. but you are strong

  8. and you are sufficient

  9. for all that my dear brothers and sisters need.

  10. You know where they have been.

  11. You know their tossing and turning.

  12. You know their thoughts,

  13. the wrestlings of their hearts,

  14. their cries to you.

  15. Would you please,

  16. in and through your word,

  17. meet them this morning,

  18. comfort them,

  19. speak to their hearts this morning.

  20. Exalt your son,

  21. glorify his grace and love toward us.

  22. Revealed on the cross.

  23. Make it fresh for us this morning from your word.

  24. In Jesus' name we pray.

  25. Amen.

  26. If you are able,

  27. please stand and join me in honoring the Lord

  28. as we read from his word together.

  29. Ruth chapter two,

  30. verses one to 23.

  31. Now,

  32. Naomi had a relative of her husband's,

  33. a worthy man of the clan of Elimelech,

  34. whose name was Boaz.

  35. And Ruth,

  36. the Moabite,

  37. said to Naomi,

  38. let me go to the field

  39. and glean among the years of grain

  40. after him in whose sight I shall find favor.

  41. And she said to her,

  42. go,

  43. my daughter.

  44. So she set out

  45. and went

  46. and gleaned in the field

  47. after the reapers.

  48. And she happened to come

  49. to the part of the field

  50. belonging to Boaz,

  51. who was of the clan of Elimelech.

  52. And behold,

  53. Boaz came from Bethlehem.

  54. And he said to the reapers,

  55. the Lord be with you.

  56. And they answered,

  57. the Lord bless you.

  58. Then Boaz said to the,

  59. to his young man

  60. who was in charge of the reapers,

  61. whose young woman is this?

  62. And the servant

  63. who was in charge of the reapers answered,

  64. she is the young Moabite woman

  65. who came back with Naomi

  66. from the country of Moab.

  67. She said,

  68. please let me glean

  69. and gather among the sheaves

  70. after the reapers.

  71. So she came

  72. and she has continued

  73. from early morning until now,

  74. except for a short rest.

  75. Then Boaz said to Ruth,

  76. now listen,

  77. my daughter,

  78. do not go to glean

  79. in another field

  80. or leave this one,

  81. but keep close

  82. to my young woman.

  83. Let your eyes

  84. be on the field

  85. that they are reaping

  86. and go after them.

  87. Have I not charged

  88. the young men

  89. not to touch you?

  90. And when you are thirsty,

  91. go to the vessels

  92. and drink what the young men

  93. have drawn.

  94. Then she fell on her face,

  95. bowing to the ground

  96. and said to him,

  97. why have I found favor

  98. in your eyes

  99. that you should take notice

  100. of me

  101. since I am a foreigner?

  102. But Boaz answered her,

  103. all that you have done

  104. for your mother-in-law

  105. since the death

  106. of your husband

  107. has been fully told to me

  108. and how you left

  109. your father and mother

  110. and your native land

  111. and came to a people

  112. that you did not know before.

  113. The Lord repay you

  114. for what you have done

  115. and a full reward

  116. be given you

  117. by the Lord,

  118. the God of Israel,

  119. under whose wings

  120. you have come

  121. to take refuge.

  122. Then she said,

  123. I have found favor

  124. in your eyes,

  125. my Lord,

  126. for you have comforted me

  127. and spoken kindly

  128. to your servant.

  129. Do I am not

  130. one of your servants?

  131. And at mealtime,

  132. Boaz said to her,

  133. come here

  134. and eat some bread

  135. and dip your morsel

  136. in the wine.

  137. So she sat beside the reapers

  138. and he passed to her

  139. a roasted grain

  140. and she ate

  141. until she was satisfied

  142. and she had some left over.

  143. When she rose to glean,

  144. Boaz instructed

  145. his young men saying,

  146. let her glean

  147. even among the sheaves

  148. and do not reproach her.

  149. And also,

  150. pull out some

  151. from the bundles

  152. for her

  153. and leave it

  154. for her to glean

  155. and do not rebuke her.

  156. So she gleaned

  157. in the field

  158. until evening.

  159. Then she beat out

  160. what she had gleaned

  161. and it was about

  162. an ephah of barley.

  163. And she took it up

  164. and went into the city.

  165. Her mother-in-law

  166. saw what she had gleaned

  167. gleaned.

  168. She also brought out

  169. and gave her

  170. what food she had left over

  171. after being satisfied.

  172. And her mother-in-law

  173. said to her,

  174. where did you glean today?

  175. Where have you worked?

  176. Blessed be the man

  177. who took notice of you.

  178. So she told her mother-in-law

  179. with whom she had worked

  180. and said,

  181. the man's name

  182. with whom I work today

  183. is Boaz.

  184. And Naomi said

  185. to her daughter-in-law,

  186. may he be blessed

  187. by the Lord

  188. whose kindness

  189. has not forsaken

  190. the living or the dead.

  191. Naomi also said to her,

  192. the man is a close relative

  193. of ours,

  194. one of our redeemers.

  195. And Ruth the Moabite said,

  196. besides,

  197. he said to me,

  198. you shall keep close

  199. by my young men

  200. until they have finished

  201. all my harvest.

  202. And Naomi said to Ruth,

  203. her daughter-in-law,

  204. it is good,

  205. my daughter,

  206. that you go out

  207. with his young woman,

  208. lest in another field

  209. you be assaulted.

  210. So she kept close

  211. to the young woman

  212. of Boaz,

  213. gleaning until the end

  214. of the barley

  215. and wheat harvests.

  216. And she lived

  217. with her mother-in-law.

  218. This is God's holy

  219. and authoritative word.

  220. In his classic 1952 novel,

  221. Invisible Man,

  222. Ralph Ellison writes

  223. from the perspective

  224. of an unnamed black narrator

  225. who feels invisible

  226. in society

  227. because of his race.

  228. He begins in the prologue

  229. by saying,

  230. I am an invisible man.

  231. Not because of his,

  232. not because he's

  233. an immaterial ghost

  234. or because,

  235. you know,

  236. he's made of other things

  237. or ethereal things,

  238. but no,

  239. he says,

  240. I'm made of flesh and bone,

  241. fiber and liquids

  242. like any other man.

  243. But he says,

  244. I am invisible,

  245. understand,

  246. simply because people

  247. refuse to see me.

  248. It's a common experience

  249. for marginalized peoples.

  250. The poor

  251. and those employed

  252. in professions

  253. in society

  254. that are deemed menial

  255. often feel

  256. unseen or overlooked

  257. like a hapless pawn

  258. in a world

  259. run by the rich,

  260. rise of automation

  261. that leads to

  262. unemployment,

  263. persistent inflation

  264. caused by wars

  265. and tariffs

  266. beyond their control

  267. being treated

  268. as transactional functions

  269. rather than

  270. as relational humans.

  271. And so on.

  272. Foreigners and immigrants

  273. often feel

  274. similarly unseen.

  275. They are regarded

  276. as other.

  277. Their complex

  278. national and

  279. ethnic identities

  280. and histories

  281. are erased

  282. and lumped

  283. into broad,

  284. monolithic,

  285. racial or regional

  286. categories.

  287. They don't have

  288. the same legal

  289. recourses

  290. and rights

  291. as citizens.

  292. Their professional

  293. qualifications

  294. and credentials

  295. that they enjoyed

  296. in their home country

  297. are now meaningless

  298. because they're not

  299. recognized in their

  300. new locale

  301. and forcing them

  302. toward underemployment

  303. Unemployment!

  304. Unseen!

  305. Unknown!

  306. Unnoticed!

  307. Perhaps some of you

  308. have felt like that lately.

  309. Does anyone

  310. see

  311. what I'm going

  312. through?

  313. Does anyone

  314. care?

  315. Does anyone

  316. notice?

  317. Our passage

  318. this morning

  319. teaches us

  320. that in his

  321. loving kindness

  322. the Lord

  323. takes notice

  324. of foreigners

  325. who take refuge

  326. under his wings.

  327. And we're going

  328. to explore that

  329. by examining

  330. closely three

  331. the main

  332. characters

  333. in chapter 2.

  334. First Ruth,

  335. second Boaz,

  336. and third Yahweh

  337. himself,

  338. the Lord God.

  339. If anyone

  340. could go

  341. unseen,

  342. unnoticed,

  343. unknown,

  344. it would have

  345. been Ruth.

  346. Look at verse 2

  347. and 6

  348. and 21.

  349. Ruth,

  350. the Moabite.

  351. She's called

  352. a Moabite

  353. seven times

  354. throughout the book.

  355. A foreigner

  356. from a people

  357. who have

  358. a bitter

  359. and belligerent

  360. history

  361. with Israel.

  362. people of

  363. Bethlehem

  364. would have

  365. been naturally

  366. prejudiced

  367. against her

  368. and anyone

  369. from her

  370. country.

  371. Not only

  372. that,

  373. Ruth was

  374. poor.

  375. Later in

  376. chapter 4,

  377. we see that

  378. Naomi sells

  379. the parcel

  380. of land

  381. that belonged

  382. to her

  383. deceased husband

  384. Elimelech.

  385. Whether Elimelech

  386. already sold

  387. the land

  388. ten years prior

  389. when they were

  390. moving away

  391. to Moab

  392. or whether

  393. they held

  394. on to it

  395. and because

  396. he already

  397. sold and needed

  398. to be redeemed

  399. or whether

  400. they had

  401. held on

  402. to it

  403. and now

  404. they're

  405. trying to

  406. sell it

  407. because they

  408. have no

  409. one to

  410. work the

  411. field and

  412. desperately

  413. need money.

  414. Either way,

  415. Naomi and

  416. Ruth are

  417. destitute.

  418. They have

  419. no money.

  420. In verses

  421. 2-3,

  422. Ruth proposes

  423. to Naomi,

  424. let me go to

  425. the field

  426. and glean

  427. among the

  428. ears of grain

  429. after him

  430. in whose

  431. sight I

  432. shall find

  433. favor.

  434. This was

  435. a practice

  436. of the

  437. poor

  438. in Israel.

  439. Old Testament

  440. harvest laws

  441. specify that

  442. when you reap

  443. the harvest

  444. in your field,

  445. you are not

  446. to harvest

  447. it right up

  448. to the edge

  449. lest you

  450. leave nothing

  451. for the poor,

  452. the sojourners

  453. and the widows.

  454. Also,

  455. when you gather

  456. the wheat

  457. or whatever

  458. you are harvesting

  459. into bundles

  460. and into sheaves,

  461. whatever you drop

  462. along the way,

  463. you are not

  464. supposed to go

  465. back and pick

  466. it up.

  467. You are supposed

  468. to leave it

  469. for the poor,

  470. the sojourners

  471. and widows

  472. so that they

  473. have something

  474. to eat.

  475. It was a

  476. wise,

  477. compassionate

  478. social welfare

  479. system designed

  480. for the poor

  481. and the marginalized.

  482. It wasn't a

  483. free handout

  484. that disincentivized

  485. work or

  486. fosters complacency

  487. and long-term

  488. dependency.

  489. It preserved

  490. the principle

  491. of 2 Thessalonians

  492. 3.10,

  493. if anyone is

  494. not willing

  495. to work,

  496. let him not

  497. eat.

  498. It afforded

  499. the poor

  500. an opportunity

  501. for the dignity

  502. of work.

  503. Look at how

  504. hard Ruth works

  505. in verse 7.

  506. The word

  507. continued can

  508. be translated

  509. more literally

  510. as stood.

  511. She has

  512. stood from

  513. early morning

  514. until now

  515. except for

  516. short rest.

  517. It's not

  518. talking about

  519. her just

  520. standing around

  521. idly and

  522. doing nothing.

  523. It's saying

  524. that she was

  525. on her feet

  526. the whole

  527. day.

  528. I know

  529. most of you

  530. work jobs

  531. where you

  532. sit all day,

  533. so it's hard

  534. to appreciate

  535. how hard

  536. it is to

  537. be on

  538. your feet

  539. all day.

  540. It's

  541. exhausting

  542. just

  543. standing

  544. all day.

  545. She was

  546. not just

  547. standing,

  548. she was

  549. standing

  550. and

  551. working,

  552. working

  553. hard to

  554. collect

  555. the

  556. gleanings.

  557. The Old

  558. Testament

  559. approach

  560. to this

  561. kind of

  562. compassionate

  563. care for

  564. the poor

  565. and welfare

  566. as it

  567. also commands

  568. the well-to-do

  569. to be

  570. generous,

  571. to have

  572. compassion

  573. on the

  574. less well-off

  575. rather than

  576. having a

  577. penny-pinching

  578. attitude

  579. toward

  580. maximizing

  581. their own

  582. wealth

  583. and profit.

  584. That's a good

  585. lesson for all

  586. of us too.

  587. It's great

  588. that you're

  589. trying to

  590. save for

  591. the future

  592. and for

  593. the house

  594. and for

  595. retirement,

  596. but if you

  597. are harvesting

  598. right up to

  599. the edge

  600. and whenever

  601. you have

  602. droppings,

  603. you know,

  604. gleanings that

  605. you've dropped

  606. along the way,

  607. you go back,

  608. make sure to go

  609. back every single

  610. time to collect

  611. every last

  612. one to

  613. maximize your

  614. profits

  615. instead of

  616. caring for

  617. those who

  618. are poor,

  619. sojourners,

  620. widows,

  621. then it

  622. exposes the

  623. fact that

  624. you have

  625. misaligned

  626. affections and

  627. priorities,

  628. that you

  629. don't have

  630. room in

  631. your heart

  632. for generosity

  633. toward God

  634. and others.

  635. Of course,

  636. during Ruth's

  637. day,

  638. as in ours,

  639. there was no

  640. guarantee that

  641. people would

  642. actually obey

  643. God's commands

  644. and have

  645. compassion toward

  646. the poor,

  647. and that's why

  648. Ruth makes

  649. this suggestion,

  650. let me go to

  651. the field and

  652. glean among

  653. the years of

  654. grain,

  655. after him in

  656. whose sight I

  657. shall find

  658. favor.

  659. She's well

  660. aware that

  661. not everyone's

  662. going to look

  663. kindly upon

  664. her.

  665. She might go

  666. to one field

  667. and be driven

  668. out of the

  669. field and have

  670. to go to

  671. another one

  672. and then to

  673. another one

  674. and then to

  675. another one.

  676. She doesn't

  677. know with

  678. whom she's

  679. going to

  680. find favor.

  681. She's at

  682. the mercy

  683. of others.

  684. She's poor.

  685. Not only was

  686. Ruth a

  687. foreigner,

  688. a Moabite,

  689. and poor,

  690. she was also

  691. a widow.

  692. She didn't

  693. have the

  694. social standing

  695. and the

  696. material

  697. provision

  698. and the

  699. physical

  700. protection

  701. that usually

  702. fell upon

  703. husbands in

  704. this culture

  705. to provide

  706. for their

  707. wives.

  708. Remember the

  709. historical

  710. backdrop of

  711. the book

  712. of Ruth.

  713. It said

  714. in Ruth

  715. 1.1,

  716. in the

  717. days when

  718. the judges

  719. ruled,

  720. as I

  721. mentioned

  722. two weeks

  723. ago,

  724. the days

  725. when the

  726. judges

  727. ruled were

  728. not happy,

  729. prosperous

  730. times.

  731. They were

  732. lawless

  733. times when

  734. people did

  735. whatever they

  736. saw fit.

  737. Judges 21.25

  738. summarize it

  739. this way,

  740. in those

  741. days there

  742. was no

  743. king in

  744. Israel.

  745. Everyone

  746. did what

  747. was right

  748. in his

  749. own eyes.

  750. These were

  751. lawless

  752. times that

  753. Ruth lived

  754. in, and

  755. women,

  756. especially

  757. widows,

  758. were vulnerable

  759. to exploitation.

  760. Throughout the

  761. book of Judges,

  762. you see women

  763. treated as

  764. disposable

  765. property.

  766. In Judges 19,

  767. a local mob

  768. surrounds the

  769. house of a

  770. man who has

  771. taken in a

  772. traveling Levi

  773. to host him.

  774. And this

  775. mob shows

  776. up and

  777. demands to

  778. have the

  779. traveling

  780. Levite for

  781. sexual sport.

  782. To appease

  783. them, the

  784. host offers

  785. up his own

  786. virgin daughter,

  787. and the

  788. traveling Levite

  789. offers up his

  790. own concubine

  791. and tells

  792. them,

  793. quote,

  794. violate them

  795. and do to

  796. them what

  797. seems good

  798. to you.

  799. people doing

  800. whatever seems

  801. good to

  802. their own

  803. minds.

  804. And the

  805. Levite's

  806. concubines

  807. gang-raped

  808. all night.

  809. The times

  810. of the

  811. judges were

  812. not safe

  813. for women.

  814. And you

  815. see hints

  816. of this dark

  817. background

  818. throughout this

  819. chapter.

  820. In verse

  821. 9, Boaz

  822. charges the

  823. young man

  824. not to

  825. touch

  826. Ruth.

  827. Why does

  828. he have to

  829. tell them

  830. to not

  831. touch

  832. Ruth?

  833. I mean,

  834. isn't that

  835. just what

  836. they should

  837. do normally?

  838. Why?

  839. Because if

  840. he doesn't

  841. tell them

  842. and if

  843. he doesn't

  844. use his

  845. authority to

  846. make sure

  847. they don't

  848. touch her,

  849. they might.

  850. And the

  851. word touch

  852. in Hebrew

  853. as it does

  854. in English

  855. has a range

  856. of meanings

  857. including

  858. assault,

  859. abuse,

  860. harassment.

  861. We also

  862. see this

  863. risk,

  864. this dark

  865. backdrop in

  866. verse 22

  867. when Naomi

  868. says to

  869. Ruth,

  870. it is good

  871. my daughter

  872. that you

  873. go out with

  874. Boaz's young

  875. woman,

  876. lest in

  877. another field

  878. you be

  879. assaulted.

  880. Ruth,

  881. as a

  882. young

  883. woman,

  884. as a

  885. foreign

  886. woman,

  887. as a

  888. widowed

  889. woman,

  890. as a

  891. poor

  892. woman,

  893. was

  894. quadruply

  895. vulnerable.

  896. And now

  897. we can

  898. appreciate the

  899. extraordinary

  900. courage it

  901. took for,

  902. likely took

  903. for Ruth

  904. to even

  905. suggest going

  906. out to the

  907. field of

  908. strangers to

  909. glean.

  910. She's not

  911. looking out

  912. for herself,

  913. she's looking

  914. out for her

  915. mother-in-law

  916. who can't

  917. go out to

  918. glean.

  919. I'm going to

  920. provide for

  921. her.

  922. I told her

  923. I'll be

  924. with her

  925. till death

  926. do us part.

  927. I need to

  928. provide for

  929. her, care

  930. for her.

  931. I don't

  932. know what

  933. will happen

  934. to me,

  935. but I will

  936. go looking

  937. for a favor

  938. where I can

  939. find it.

  940. she is a

  941. worthy woman,

  942. a woman

  943. of hesed,

  944. loving

  945. kindness,

  946. covenant

  947. loyalty.

  948. And then

  949. we're

  950. introduced to

  951. Boaz in

  952. verse 1.

  953. The narrator

  954. tells us that

  955. he was a

  956. worthy man

  957. of the clan

  958. of Elimelech.

  959. So she is a

  960. relative of

  961. Naomi.

  962. The phrase

  963. worthy man

  964. can be more

  965. literally translated

  966. as a mighty

  967. man of

  968. wealth.

  969. Some

  970. translations

  971. wonder like

  972. the King

  973. James Version

  974. puts it

  975. that way.

  976. The word

  977. for man

  978. here literally

  979. means strong

  980. man.

  981. It means

  982. mighty man

  983. or a hero.

  984. Compare that

  985. to his name,

  986. the meaning

  987. of his name,

  988. Boaz,

  989. which means

  990. in the

  991. strength,

  992. likely in

  993. the strength

  994. of Yahweh,

  995. in the strength

  996. of the Lord.

  997. It's such a

  998. strong name.

  999. Later,

  1000. like when

  1001. Solomon builds

  1002. his temple,

  1003. there are two

  1004. pillars,

  1005. main pillars

  1006. that uphold

  1007. the building,

  1008. and one of

  1009. the pillars

  1010. they name

  1011. Boaz.

  1012. In the

  1013. strength.

  1014. The other

  1015. one they

  1016. name

  1017. Yakin,

  1018. which means

  1019. the Lord

  1020. establishes.

  1021. So it's a

  1022. strong manly

  1023. name like

  1024. a pillar.

  1025. Surprise,

  1026. I haven't

  1027. met more

  1028. men with

  1029. the name

  1030. Boaz.

  1031. And he's

  1032. also a

  1033. worthy man.

  1034. The Hebrew

  1035. word translated

  1036. worthy here can

  1037. mean a number

  1038. of things.

  1039. It can mean

  1040. valor,

  1041. it can mean

  1042. wealth,

  1043. it can mean

  1044. skill,

  1045. excellence,

  1046. nobility,

  1047. which is

  1048. why some

  1049. people think

  1050. it means

  1051. wealthy in

  1052. this context,

  1053. which wouldn't

  1054. be wrong.

  1055. Boaz is

  1056. wealthy.

  1057. He's got

  1058. land,

  1059. he's got

  1060. servants,

  1061. he's a

  1062. wealthy man.

  1063. However,

  1064. considering that

  1065. the penniless

  1066. Ruth herself

  1067. is later

  1068. described in

  1069. Ruth chapter

    Ruth 3:11

  1070. 3 verse 11

  1071. with the exact

  1072. same word

  1073. as a

  1074. worthy woman,

  1075. I doubt

  1076. that wealth

  1077. is a primary

  1078. meaning intended

  1079. here.

  1080. That same

  1081. word is used

  1082. in Proverbs

    Proverbs 31:10

  1083. 31 verse

  1084. 10.

  1085. An excellent

  1086. wife who

  1087. can find.

  1088. She's far

  1089. more precious

  1090. than jewels.

  1091. The heart

  1092. of her husband

  1093. trusts in her

  1094. and he will

  1095. have no lack

  1096. of gain.

  1097. She does him

  1098. good and not

  1099. harm all the

  1100. days of her

  1101. life.

  1102. Ruth is the

  1103. only named

  1104. woman in the

  1105. Old Testament,

  1106. in the Hebrew

  1107. Bible,

  1108. who is called

  1109. by that title

  1110. of Proverbs

  1111. 31,

  1112. an excellent

  1113. woman,

  1114. a noble

  1115. woman,

  1116. woman of

  1117. noble

  1118. character.

  1119. And I think

  1120. a similar

  1121. meaning is

  1122. intended here

  1123. for Boaz.

  1124. He's not

  1125. merely a

  1126. wealthy man.

  1127. More importantly,

  1128. he is a

  1129. worthy man,

  1130. a man of

  1131. godly,

  1132. noble character,

  1133. a manly

  1134. man in the

  1135. true sense

  1136. of the word,

  1137. a man who

  1138. does not

  1139. use his

  1140. strength and

  1141. position to

  1142. take advantage

  1143. of others,

  1144. to stand on

  1145. top of others,

  1146. but a man who

  1147. uses his

  1148. strength and

  1149. position to

  1150. carry others

  1151. and to lift

  1152. up others

  1153. around him.

  1154. We see

  1155. this in the

  1156. many actions

  1157. that Boaz

  1158. takes on

  1159. behalf of

  1160. Ruth to

  1161. provide for

  1162. her, to

  1163. protect her.

  1164. He not

  1165. only lets

  1166. Ruth glean in

  1167. his field,

  1168. he encourages

  1169. her to glean

  1170. only from

  1171. his field,

  1172. under his

  1173. watchful eye

  1174. and protection.

  1175. And then he

  1176. goes above

  1177. and beyond

  1178. that and

  1179. instructs his

  1180. reapers to

  1181. let Ruth

  1182. glean,

  1183. not only

  1184. from the

  1185. gleanings,

  1186. the droppings

  1187. from the

  1188. harvest,

  1189. but also

  1190. from among

  1191. the sheaves

  1192. that they've

  1193. collected and

  1194. bundled up

  1195. together.

  1196. And he

  1197. tells them

  1198. as they're

  1199. putting the

  1200. sheaves

  1201. together to

  1202. intentionally

  1203. pull

  1204. sheaves,

  1205. pull stuff

  1206. out from

  1207. the sheaves

  1208. and leave

  1209. them for

  1210. Ruth.

  1211. It's like,

  1212. oh,

  1213. oops,

  1214. so that she

  1215. could collect

  1216. even more.

  1217. And even

  1218. though Ruth

  1219. is a

  1220. lowly

  1221. servant

  1222. in terms

  1223. of her

  1224. social

  1225. position

  1226. and status,

  1227. in fact,

  1228. as Ruth

  1229. says herself

  1230. in verse

  1231. 13,

  1232. she's not

  1233. even one

  1234. of his

  1235. servants.

  1236. She doesn't

  1237. even have

  1238. the rights

  1239. that Boaz's

  1240. servants

  1241. have.

  1242. She's not

  1243. even one

  1244. of his

  1245. servants.

  1246. And yet,

  1247. Boaz invites

  1248. her,

  1249. tells his

  1250. man to

  1251. draw water

  1252. for her.

  1253. Drink from

  1254. that water

  1255. when you

  1256. are thirsty.

  1257. Tells her

  1258. to come

  1259. here.

  1260. Here's the

  1261. bread that

  1262. we're eating.

  1263. Dip your

  1264. bread into

  1265. our dipping

  1266. wine.

  1267. And here's

  1268. the roasted

  1269. grain.

  1270. Come have

  1271. lunch with

  1272. us.

  1273. Gives her

  1274. so much

  1275. food that

  1276. she has

  1277. enough

  1278. left over

  1279. to take

  1280. home and

  1281. feed her

  1282. mother-in-law

  1283. Naomi.

  1284. You can

  1285. imagine how

  1286. overwhelmed

  1287. and grateful

  1288. Ruth must

  1289. be,

  1290. considering the

  1291. risk that

  1292. she took

  1293. to go out

  1294. to that

  1295. field where

  1296. she knew

  1297. no one.

  1298. And she's

  1299. overwhelmed by

  1300. Boaz's care,

  1301. gestures twice.

  1302. She says,

  1303. once in

  1304. verse 10,

  1305. why have I

  1306. found favor

  1307. in your

  1308. eyes?

  1309. That you

  1310. should take

  1311. notice of

  1312. me since I

  1313. am a

  1314. foreigner.

  1315. And in

  1316. verse 13,

  1317. I have

  1318. found favor

  1319. in your

  1320. eyes,

  1321. my Lord,

  1322. for you

  1323. have comforted

  1324. me and

  1325. spoken kindly

  1326. to your

  1327. servant,

  1328. though I

  1329. am not

  1330. one of

  1331. your servants.

  1332. That word

  1333. favor

  1334. translates

  1335. to the

  1336. Hebrew word

  1337. that is

  1338. often

  1339. translated

  1340. as

  1341. grace.

  1342. It's the

  1343. word used

  1344. to describe

  1345. our Lord

  1346. God in

  1347. Exodus 34

  1348. when he

  1349. reveals himself

  1350. as the

  1351. Lord,

  1352. the Lord,

  1353. the gracious

  1354. and compassionate

  1355. God.

  1356. It's a

  1357. word that

  1358. especially

  1359. applies when

  1360. you're the

  1361. one that's

  1362. receiving a

  1363. favor from

  1364. a benefactor,

  1365. someone who's

  1366. in a superior

  1367. social position

  1368. than you,

  1369. like in this

  1370. instant with

  1371. Ruth and

  1372. Boaz or

  1373. with a

  1374. servant and

  1375. a king.

  1376. And when

  1377. you're treated

  1378. with favor,

  1379. you're not

  1380. being treated

  1381. fairly.

  1382. Right?

  1383. Like when you

  1384. tell people,

  1385. don't have

  1386. favorites.

  1387. It's like you

  1388. shouldn't have a

  1389. favorite kid,

  1390. some people say,

  1391. right?

  1392. You shouldn't

  1393. have a favorite

  1394. church member.

  1395. You know,

  1396. you should have

  1397. a don't play

  1398. favorites,

  1399. right?

  1400. It's like when

  1401. you have favorites,

  1402. when you favor

  1403. someone,

  1404. you treat

  1405. them with

  1406. special affection.

  1407. You don't

  1408. treat them

  1409. equally,

  1410. fairly,

  1411. like everybody

  1412. else.

  1413. No,

  1414. you treat

  1415. them with

  1416. special attention.

  1417. That favor

  1418. word is a

  1419. key word in

  1420. the book of

  1421. Esther.

  1422. She's someone

  1423. who has

  1424. favor,

  1425. favor from

  1426. people who

  1427. see her,

  1428. favor from

  1429. the king.

  1430. That's why

  1431. she's given

  1432. access to the

  1433. king that

  1434. is normally

  1435. not granted

  1436. to people.

  1437. That's why

  1438. the king

  1439. listens to

  1440. her and

  1441. not to

  1442. Haman.

  1443. It's because

  1444. she has

  1445. favor.

  1446. And Boaz

  1447. shows Ruth

  1448. favor.

  1449. even though

  1450. she is

  1451. a foreigner,

  1452. a Moabite,

  1453. a poor

  1454. widow,

  1455. and not

  1456. even one

  1457. of his

  1458. servants

  1459. that he's

  1460. responsible

  1461. for.

  1462. And in

  1463. doing that,

  1464. Boaz is

  1465. imitating

  1466. God who

  1467. is gracious

  1468. with people

  1469. like that.

  1470. Isn't that

  1471. how God

  1472. drew near

  1473. to us?

  1474. Ian,

  1475. do we

  1476. deserve

  1477. anything

  1478. from our

  1479. Lord God?

  1480. Aren't

  1481. most of

  1482. us

  1483. Gentiles?

  1484. Not

  1485. even part

  1486. of the

  1487. original

  1488. chosen

  1489. people

  1490. of God?

  1491. Aren't

  1492. we the

  1493. people whose

  1494. ancestors

  1495. persecuted the

  1496. people of

  1497. God,

  1498. rebelled

  1499. against God,

  1500. and worshipped

  1501. and went

  1502. after idols?

  1503. Aren't we

  1504. the ones

  1505. who have

  1506. all sinned

  1507. against him?

  1508. Ones who

  1509. were alienated

  1510. from him?

  1511. Aren't we

  1512. the ones,

  1513. as Paul

  1514. describes in

  1515. Ephesians 2,

  1516. those who

  1517. were separated

  1518. from Christ,

  1519. the uncircumcision,

  1520. the Gentiles

  1521. and the flesh,

  1522. separated from

  1523. Christ,

  1524. alienated from

  1525. the common

  1526. wealth of

  1527. Israel,

  1528. apart from

  1529. God,

  1530. without God

  1531. and without

  1532. hope in

  1533. the world,

  1534. strangers to

  1535. the covenants

  1536. of promise?

  1537. That's what

  1538. we all

  1539. were.

  1540. And yet,

  1541. God

  1542. showed us

  1543. favor.

  1544. Gracious,

  1545. gracious,

  1546. graciousness.

  1547. He showed

  1548. us grace,

  1549. unmerited

  1550. favor,

  1551. undeserved

  1552. favor in

  1553. sending his

  1554. own son,

  1555. Jesus,

  1556. to save

  1557. us,

  1558. to call

  1559. us as

  1560. a people

  1561. for himself

  1562. to belong

  1563. to him.

  1564. That's what

  1565. Boaz is

  1566. doing,

  1567. extending

  1568. the favor

  1569. of God.

  1570. Why did

  1571. Boaz show

  1572. Ruth so

  1573. much favor?

  1574. I know

  1575. what some

  1576. of you guys

  1577. are thinking.

  1578. he's making

  1579. his moves.

  1580. I don't

  1581. know.

  1582. I'm not

  1583. sure about

  1584. that.

  1585. At least

  1586. maybe not

  1587. yet.

  1588. Because he's

  1589. very surprised.

  1590. He's a little

  1591. too old for

  1592. her.

  1593. So this

  1594. text very

  1595. artfully and

  1596. subtly kind

  1597. of builds

  1598. tension.

  1599. So he

  1600. mentions

  1601. Ruth as

  1602. a young

  1603. woman.

  1604. And then

  1605. the first

  1606. servant,

  1607. his foreman,

  1608. that he

  1609. mentions is

  1610. a young

  1611. man.

  1612. young

  1613. woman,

  1614. young

  1615. man.

  1616. Oh,

  1617. I wonder

  1618. what could

  1619. happen.

  1620. And then

  1621. again and

  1622. again,

  1623. young

  1624. men,

  1625. young

  1626. women.

  1627. And I

  1628. think there's

  1629. this tension

  1630. builds.

  1631. What's going to

  1632. happen to

  1633. Ruth?

  1634. Is she going to

  1635. find something?

  1636. Is she going to

  1637. find love?

  1638. And then

  1639. there's this

  1640. amazing plot

  1641. twist later

  1642. on when

  1643. she proposes

  1644. to Boaz.

  1645. And Boaz is

  1646. like,

  1647. what?

  1648. It's like,

  1649. me?

  1650. It's like,

  1651. how kind

  1652. of you,

  1653. your covenant

  1654. love,

  1655. your faithfulness

  1656. in seeking

  1657. home for

  1658. your mother-in-law

  1659. and to continue

  1660. the line of

  1661. your deceased

  1662. husband by

  1663. seeking to

  1664. marry a

  1665. kinsman

  1666. redeemer who

  1667. is too old

  1668. for you,

  1669. rather than

  1670. going after

  1671. the young

  1672. men,

  1673. he says.

  1674. And so

  1675. it's building

  1676. up.

  1677. And so

  1678. I'm not

  1679. sure he's

  1680. making his

  1681. moves yet.

  1682. But this

  1683. whole chapter

  1684. is structured

  1685. in a way

  1686. that gives

  1687. us an

  1688. answer to

  1689. that question.

  1690. It's

  1691. structured

  1692. chiastically.

  1693. The first

  1694. half of

  1695. Ruth chapter

  1696. two mirrors

  1697. the second

  1698. half of

  1699. Ruth chapter

  1700. two.

  1701. And that

  1702. means there's

  1703. a matching

  1704. element.

  1705. Every verse

  1706. has a matching

  1707. counterpart in

  1708. the second

  1709. half.

  1710. And then

  1711. when you get

  1712. to the

  1713. middle,

  1714. that's the

  1715. part that

  1716. stands alone.

  1717. It's the

  1718. part that

  1719. alone doesn't

  1720. have a pair.

  1721. And that's

  1722. verses 11

  1723. to 12.

  1724. The structure

  1725. intentionally brings

  1726. our focus to

  1727. that.

  1728. I think I have

  1729. this to show.

1730. So you can see it

  1731. in verse 1 to 3.

  1732. You have the

  1733. introduction with

  1734. the focus on

  1735. Boaz.

  1736. And in

  1737. verses 20 to 23,

  1738. you have the

  1739. conclusion with

  1740. the focus on

  1741. Boaz.

  1742. Workers bless

  1743. Boaz and Boaz

  1744. notices Ruth in

  1745. verses 4 to 5.

  1746. Naomi blesses

  1747. Boaz for noticing

  1748. Ruth in verses

  1749. 19 to 20.

  1750. Ruth gleans in

  1751. Boaz's field in

  1752. verses 6 to 7.

  1753. And then

  1754. Ruth brings

  1755. back what she

  1756. gleaned in

  1757. Boaz's field in

  1758. verses 17 to 18.

  1759. And then

  1760. Boaz provides for

  1761. and protects Ruth

  1762. in verses 8 to 9.

  1763. And then Boaz

  1764. provides for and

  1765. protects Ruth again

  1766. in verses 14 to 16.

  1767. And then

  1768. Ruth's amazement

  1769. at Boaz's favor in

  1770. verse 10.

  1771. Ruth's amazement

  1772. at Boaz's favor in

  1773. verse 13.

  1774. And that,

  1775. like a shining

  1776. arrow,

  1777. is bringing its

  1778. attention to

  1779. verses 11 to

  1780. 12.

  1781. All that you

  1782. have done for

  1783. your mother-in-law

  1784. since the death

  1785. of your husband

  1786. has been fully

  1787. told to me.

  1788. And how you

  1789. left your father

  1790. and mother and

  1791. your native land

  1792. and came to a

  1793. people that you

  1794. did not know

  1795. before.

  1796. The Lord repay

  1797. you for what you

  1798. have done.

  1799. And a full reward

  1800. be given you by

  1801. the Lord, the God

  1802. of Israel, under

  1803. whose wings you

  1804. have come to

  1805. take refuge.

  1806. That's the key

  1807. verse.

  1808. That's why Boaz

  1809. is showing her

  1810. favor.

  1811. That's why God's

  1812. showing her favor.

  1813. In showing covenant

  1814. loyalty and steadfast

  1815. love toward her

  1816. mother-in-law,

  1817. Naomi, Ruth has

  1818. done what is

  1819. pleasing to

  1820. Yahweh.

  1821. But Boaz

  1822. recognizes that

  1823. in throwing her

  1824. lot in with

  1825. Naomi, Ruth has

  1826. done more than

  1827. simply that.

  1828. Look at how he

  1829. phrases it in

  1830. verse 11.

  1831. How you left

  1832. your father and

  1833. mother and your

  1834. native land and

  1835. came to a people

  1836. that you did not

  1837. know before.

  1838. Does this remind

  1839. you of anything

  1840. else in scripture

  1841. in the Old

  1842. Testament?

  1843. This is exactly

  1844. what the Lord

  1845. God, Yahweh,

  1846. called Abram to

  1847. when he first

  1848. chose him and

  1849. his descendants

  1850. to be his

  1851. people.

  1852. Genesis 12,

  1853. 1 to 3.

  1854. Go from your

  1855. country, your

  1856. kindred, and

  1857. your father's

  1858. house to land

  1859. I will show you.

  1860. And I will make

  1861. of you a great

  1862. nation.

  1863. I will bless you

  1864. and make your

  1865. name great so that

  1866. you will be a

  1867. blessing.

  1868. I will bless

  1869. those who bless

  1870. you and whoever

  1871. curses you I

  1872. will curse and

  1873. in you all the

  1874. families of the

  1875. earth shall be

  1876. blessed.

  1877. Remember what

  1878. Ruth said vowed

  1879. to Naomi in

  1880. chapter 1 verse

  1881. 16.

  1882. Your people shall

  1883. be my people and

  1884. your God my

  1885. God.

  1886. In following

  1887. Naomi to

  1888. Bethlehem, Ruth

  1889. has switched

  1890. religious spiritual

  1891. allegiances.

  1892. She has chosen

  1893. the Lord, Yahweh,

  1894. as her God.

  1895. And so Boaz says

  1896. to her in verse

  1897. 12, the Lord

  1898. repay you for

  1899. what you have

  1900. done and a

  1901. full reward be

  1902. given you by the

  1903. Lord, the God

  1904. of Israel, under

  1905. whose wings you

  1906. have come to

  1907. take refuge.

  1908. Because he is

  1909. your God.

  1910. So yes, Boaz is

  1911. providing for Ruth

  1912. and protecting her,

  1913. but he's doing

  1914. that because

  1915. ultimately, Yahweh,

  1916. the Lord, is

  1917. taking notice of

  1918. Ruth and taking

  1919. care of her.

  1920. Boaz, the

  1921. kinsman

  1922. redeemer, is

  1923. merely an

  1924. instrument in

  1925. the hands of

  1926. our divine

  1927. redeemer.

  1928. Naomi remarks

  1929. in verse 20,

  1930. may Boaz be

  1931. blessed by the

  1932. Lord, whose

  1933. kindness has

  1934. not forsaken

  1935. the living or

  1936. the dead.

  1937. It's that

  1938. recurring word

  1939. again, hesed,

  1940. kindness, loving

  1941. kindness, covenant

  1942. loyalty.

  1943. But whose

  1944. kindness is

  1945. Naomi speaking

  1946. of?

  1947. Look at verse

  1948. 20 again.

  1949. Whose kindness

  1950. is Naomi speaking

  1951. of?

  1952. Is it Boaz's

  1953. kindness?

  1954. Is it the

  1955. Lord's kindness?

  1956. Yes.

  1957. The answer is

  1958. both.

  1959. It's intentionally

  1960. unclear in the

  1961. narrative.

  1962. It's not spelled

  1963. out because it's

  1964. both.

  1965. Boaz is certainly

  1966. showing kindness

  1967. to the living

  1968. and to the dead,

  1969. showing kindness

  1970. to the living,

  1971. Naomi and Ruth,

  1972. to the dead,

  1973. their deceased

  1974. husbands,

  1975. Elimelech and

  1976. Melon,

  1977. respectively,

  1978. but ultimately

  1979. it's the Lord

  1980. who is showing

  1981. them kindness.

  1982. And this is in

  1983. answer to Naomi's

  1984. prayer early in

  1985. chapter 1,

  1986. verse 8.

  1987. What did she say

  1988. to her daughters-in-law

  1989. in chapter 1,

  1990. verse 8?

  1991. May the Lord

  1992. deal kindly

  1993. with you,

  1994. hesed.

  1995. And now,

  1996. the Lord's doing

  1997. exactly that.

  1998. The Lord is

  1999. treating Ruth

  2000. with kindness

  2001. because he's

  2002. looking out

  2003. for her

  2004. in answer

  2005. to Naomi's

  2006. prayer.

  2007. Even that

  2008. prayer that

  2009. Naomi uttered

  2010. in the depths

  2011. of her own

  2012. despair and

  2013. bitterness and

  2014. disillusionment,

  2015. the Lord heard

  2016. and he's now

  2017. answering that

  2018. in the kindness

  2019. that Boaz

  2020. extends to

  2021. Ruth.

  2022. And I love

  2023. verse 3.

  2024. It's ironic.

  2025. Ruth

  2026. happened to

  2027. come to the

  2028. part of the

  2029. field belonging

  2030. to Boaz.

  2031. delightful

  2032. understatement.

  2033. How did

  2034. Ruth just

  2035. happen to

  2036. come to

  2037. that one

  2038. field belonging

  2039. to Boaz,

  2040. her potential

  2041. kinsman

  2042. redeemer?

  2043. The Hebrew

  2044. word used

  2045. here is the

  2046. word that's

  2047. used for

  2048. chance.

  2049. In 1 Samuel

  2050. 6, the

  2051. Philistines come

  2052. under the

  2053. judgment of

  2054. God and the

  2055. wrath of God

  2056. because they

  2057. steal the

  2058. ark of God

  2059. from the

  2060. tabernacle.

  2061. and these

  2062. Philistines are

  2063. experiencing all

  2064. kinds of

  2065. plagues and

  2066. judgment from

  2067. God because of

  2068. the ark.

  2069. The ark is not

  2070. supposed to be

  2071. with them.

  2072. It's supposed to

  2073. be with Israel.

  2074. And so the

  2075. Philistines are

  2076. like, okay,

  2077. what do we do?

  2078. All right, let's

  2079. tie the ark to

  2080. some cows.

  2081. And then let's

  2082. see if they

  2083. act strange, if

  2084. they act like

  2085. they're possessed

  2086. by something and

  2087. they walk

  2088. directly to

  2089. Israel and

  2090. take the ark

  2091. back where it

  2092. belongs, then we

  2093. know that this

  2094. is the doing of

  2095. Israel's God.

  2096. He's bringing

  2097. these plagues

  2098. upon us.

  2099. But if the

  2100. cows just wander

  2101. off wherever

  2102. they want to

  2103. go like the

  2104. cows normally

  2105. do, then we

  2106. know that this

  2107. is not the

  2108. Lord's doing.

  2109. It is happening

  2110. to us by

  2111. chance, by

  2112. coincidence.

  2113. It's the way

  2114. it's translated

  2115. in 1 Samuel 6.

  2116. So it's a

  2117. really interesting

  2118. choice of word.

  2119. It is an

  2120. intentional

  2121. understatement.

  2122. Ruth happened

  2123. to come to the

  2124. part of the

  2125. field belonging

  2126. to Boaz.

  2127. You don't

  2128. happen to

  2129. come to

  2130. something like

  2131. that.

  2132. This is the

  2133. Bible we're

  2134. talking about

  2135. here.

  2136. In the

  2137. Hebrew worldview,

  2138. in the

  2139. biblical worldview,

  2140. there is no

  2141. such thing as

  2142. chance or luck.

  2143. Proverbs 16.33

  2144. says,

  2145. the lot is

  2146. cast into the

  2147. lap, but

  2148. every decision

  2149. is from the

  2150. Lord.

  2151. Your every

  2152. dice roll is

  2153. from the

  2154. Lord.

  2155. He's

  2156. sovereign over

  2157. everything,

  2158. every Adam,

  2159. everything that

  2160. goes down in

  2161. the history of

  2162. humanity.

  2163. He's

  2164. sovereign over

  2165. all of it.

  2166. She didn't

  2167. just happen to

  2168. come to it.

  2169. And you see

  2170. there in that

  2171. statement,

  2172. God's providential

  2173. care, even in

  2174. invisible ways that

  2175. we often don't

  2176. notice.

  2177. When I was a

  2178. sixth grader in

  2179. South Korea,

  2180. my dad

  2181. happened to be,

  2182. just happened to

  2183. be the one

  2184. engineer that his

  2185. company in

  2186. Korea decided

  2187. to send to

  2188. a partner

  2189. company in

  2190. Seattle.

  2191. One engineer.

  2192. Because of

  2193. that, my

  2194. family, who

  2195. had never

  2196. ever planned

  2197. to move out

  2198. of Korea,

  2199. ends up in

  2200. the United

  2201. States.

  2202. A year or

  2203. two later,

  2204. the company

  2205. that he left

  2206. in Korea

  2207. goes out of

  2208. business.

  2209. He's the only

  2210. guy from the

  2211. company who

  2212. still has a

  2213. job to

  2214. provide for

  2215. our family.

  2216. and here,

  2217. I receive a

  2218. great education

  2219. and I grow

  2220. much deeper

  2221. in my

  2222. relationship

  2223. with the

  2224. Lord.

  2225. When I was

  2226. a busy

  2227. college student

  2228. planning my

  2229. future and

  2230. studying hard

  2231. and showing

  2232. no interest

  2233. whatsoever in

  2234. women,

  2235. I just

  2236. happened to

  2237. go to the

  2238. university

  2239. retreat where

  2240. Williams College

  2241. and Amherst

  2242. College,

  2243. we're doing

  2244. the retreat

  2245. together.

  2246. And then I

  2247. meet this

  2248. beautiful woman

  2249. and then my

  2250. life is never

  2251. the same again.

  2252. That's my

  2253. wife, just so

  2254. you're wondering.

  2255. Yeah, yeah,

  2256. yeah.

  2257. Right.

  2258. When I'm

  2259. wandering from

  2260. church to

  2261. church,

  2262. because I

  2263. have these

  2264. reformed

  2265. convictions,

  2266. my theological

  2267. convictions,

  2268. but also these

  2269. convictions about

  2270. the gifts of

  2271. the Holy Spirit,

  2272. not wondering

  2273. where to go,

  2274. I just

  2275. happened to

  2276. talk to the

  2277. one friend who

  2278. knows about a

  2279. sovereign grace

  2280. church in

  2281. Haverhill,

  2282. Massachusetts in

  2283. seminary.

  2284. So end up in

  2285. that church,

  2286. disciple there,

  2287. mentor there,

  2288. ordained as a

  2289. pastor there,

  2290. and sent out to

  2291. plant a church in

  2292. Cambridge,

  2293. Massachusetts from

  2294. there.

  2295. It just

  2296. happened to

  2297. happen.

  2298. Sheer luck?

  2299. I think not.

  2300. I think sometimes

  2301. we worry a little

  2302. too much about

  2303. our lives,

  2304. about our

  2305. plans.

  2306. I have to get

  2307. all my ducks

  2308. in order.

  2309. I have to have

  2310. all these plans

  2311. set out.

  2312. I have to have

  2313. everything happen

  2314. exactly the way I

  2315. envisioned,

  2316. because who else is

2317. going to do it for

  2318. me?

2319. I have to look out

  2320. for myself.

  2321. No one else is

  2322. doing it.

  2323. I need to make

  2324. sure things go

  2325. well because no

  2326. one else is doing

  2327. it for me.

  2328. No, no, no,

  2329. that's not true.

  2330. It's not true that

  2331. no one else is

  2332. doing it for you.

  2333. You have a

  2334. sovereign God

  2335. who is providentially

  2336. watching over every

  2337. detail of your

  2338. life.

  2339. Because Ruth has

  2340. come under the

  2341. wings of Yahweh to

  2342. take refuge in

  2343. verse 11.

  2344. This is what's

  2345. happening to Ruth.

  2346. This image of

  2347. taking refuge,

  2348. under the wings of

  2349. Yahweh is a

  2350. richly biblical and

  2351. vivid imagery.

  2352. The law of Moses,

  2353. the Torah, or the

  2354. Pentateuch, the first

  2355. five books of the

  2356. Bible, it begins with

  2357. the Lord God hovering

2358. as his spirit over the

2359. face of the waters in

  2360. Genesis 1 verse 2.

    Genesis 1:2

  2361. And then that

  2362. Pentateuch, the first

  2363. five books of the

  2364. concludes in

  2365. Deuteronomy 32, 10

  2366. to 12, with the

  2367. Lord God hovering again

  2368. over his people,

  2369. Israel.

2370. And it says that he

  2371. encircled Israel.

  2372. He cared for him.

2373. He kept him as the

2374. apple of his eye, like

2375. an eagle that stirs up

  2376. its nest, that flutters

  2377. over its young, spreading

  2378. out its wings, catching

  2379. them, bearing them on

  2380. its pinions.

  2381. The Lord alone guided

  2382. him.

  2383. No foreign God was

  2384. with him.

  2385. It's the same word,

  2386. flutter, hover, same

  2387. Hebrew word.

  2388. The psalmists, throughout

  2389. the Psalms, often speak

  2390. of us taking refuge

  2391. under the shadow of

  2392. the wings of Yahweh.

  2393. Where are you taking

  2394. refuge this morning?

2395. Is it under the wings

2396. of Yahweh or is it

  2397. someone else's wings?

2398. Is it your own wings?

  2399. Maybe you're a single

  2400. woman wondering if any

  2401. man will ever notice

  2402. you.

2403. Maybe you're out of work

  2404. and wondering if any

  2405. employer will ever

  2406. notice you.

  2407. Maybe you're languishing

  2408. in your marriage and

  2409. wondering if there's any

  2410. help or change forthcoming.

  2411. Maybe you're dealing

  2412. with chronic pain or

  2413. illness that everybody

  2414. else seems to forget,

2415. but you know for sure

  2416. you can't ever forget

  2417. because it's real and

  2418. present.

  2419. Maybe you've been

2420. unable to have a child

2421. for a long time and

  2422. you grieve silently

  2423. because no one knows.

  2424. Whatever situation

  2425. you're in, wherever you

  2426. are, remember that the

  2427. Lord takes notice

  2428. of you.

  2429. He cares for you.

  2430. In Genesis 16, when

  2431. Sarah, her mistress,

  2432. mistreats her and her

  2433. master and the father

  2434. of her child, Abraham,

  2435. leaves her, hangs her

2436. out to dry, Hagar is

  2437. forlorn and then she

  2438. flees.

2439. But in her plight, who

  2440. notices her?

  2441. It's Yahweh.

  2442. He notices her and

  2443. cares for her.

2444. So that Hagar calls the

2445. name of the Lord who

2446. spoke to her, you are a

  2447. God of seeing.

2448. For she said, truly here

2449. I have seen him who

  2450. looks after me.

  2451. When nobody else sees

  2452. you, even when your

  2453. earthly pastors and

  2454. shepherds fail to see

  2455. you.

2456. Ed and I feel like that

  2457. all the time.

  2458. There's so many needs,

  2459. so many precious saints

  2460. and brothers and

  2461. sisters, so many things

2462. that you suffer and you

  2463. struggle with and you

  2464. wrestle with and we

  2465. want to care for

  2466. everybody but we can't

  2467. care for everybody the

  2468. way we would like.

  2469. Even when the Lord,

2470. even when we fail you,

  2471. even when your brothers

2472. and sisters fail and we

2473. don't notice you and we

2474. don't see you, the Lord

  2475. God takes notice of

  2476. you.

  2477. He sees you.

  2478. He's the God of

  2479. seeing.

  2480. Psalm 34, 15 to 18

2481. says, the eyes of the

  2482. Lord are toward the

  2483. righteous and his ears

  2484. toward their cry.

  2485. When the righteous cry

2486. for help, the Lord hears

2487. and delivers them out of

  2488. all their troubles.

2489. The Lord is near to the

  2490. brokenhearted and saves

  2491. the crushed in spirit.

  2492. That's our God.

  2493. That's Yahweh.

  2494. And come under his

  2495. wings.

  2496. Take refuge under his

  2497. wings.

  2498. In Matthew 23, 37,

2499. Jesus cries out in lament

  2500. over the unrepentant city

  2501. of Jerusalem.

  2502. Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem,

2503. how often would I, would

  2504. I have gathered your

  2505. children together as a

2506. hen gathers her brood under

2507. her wings and you were

  2508. not willing.

  2509. Prophesying of his

  2510. crucifixion, Jesus said

  2511. in John 12, 32, and I,

2512. when I am lifted up from

  2513. the earth, he's talking

2514. about the cross, will draw

  2515. all people to myself.

  2516. the outstretched arms of

2517. Jesus on the cross are the

  2518. very wings of Yahweh

  2519. inviting you.

2520. Come under the auspices of

  2521. my wings.

  2522. Come under this cross.

2523. Come under the shadow of

  2524. the cross that provides

2525. refuge for sinners, refuge for

  2526. embattled sinners, shelter for

2527. those who are receiving the

2528. withering attacks of the enemy,

  2529. the condemnation and accusation

  2530. of Satan.

2531. Come under the shadow of my

  2532. wings.

2533. Come under the shadow of the

2534. cross and there you will find

  2535. rest.

  2536. There you find refuge.

2537. On the cross, Jesus died for our

  2538. sins.

  2539. He took our place.

  2540. place.

2541. He bore the pain, the wrath, the

  2542. punishment, the shame, the

  2543. condemnation that we deserved

2544. like a mother bird hovering over

2545. her young, protecting them from

  2546. predators and the elements.

2547. He took it all on that cross.

  2548. So that's the invitation.

2549. Yahweh, the Lord, is the one who

  2550. notices foreigners, strangers, the

2551. outcasts, sinners like you and me.

2552. So come take refuge under his

  2553. wings today.

  2554. Let's pray.

  2555. Oh, Lord God.

2556. We find such comfort under the

  2557. shadow of your wings.

2558. Oh, Lord, we know well that

2559. outside of that protection, we

  2560. would not last.

2561. We are guilty sinners, guilty as

  2562. charged.

2563. Condemnation is what we deserve.

2564. Eternal damnation in hell is what

  2565. we deserve.

2566. Yet how can it be?

2567. That my Lord should die for me.

2568. Oh, Lord, we love your cross.

2569. Thank you for stretching out your

2570. arms and your wings over us in

2571. mercy, in grace, in undeserved,

2572. unmerited favor, in loving kindness,

  2573. covenant loyalty.

  2574. Taking undeserving servants, the

  2575. lowliest servants, rebellious servants,

2576. and adopting us as sons and daughters

2577. of the kingdom of God.

2578. O Lord, help us to stay, stay near the

2579. cross, under the refuge of your

  2580. wings.

2581. In Jesus' name we pray.

  2582. Amen.
