  1. Well, it's good to be with you. I'm so glad

  2. that you're worshiping with us in person or online today.

  3. So we've been in our study for 2 Timothy for

  4. a while, and as we come to chapter 3, Paul

  5. kind of finishes this section. He's talked a lot about

  6. false teaching, and this is the last time in 2

  7. Timothy that Paul discusses false teaching. As you remember, Paul

  8. is in prison. He's in Rome, and he's facing his death.

  9. He's sending his last will, if you will, and testament

  10. to Timothy. He's writing to warn him. He's writing with

  11. a sense of urgency to Timothy. He wants Timothy to

  12. carry on his ministry. He wants the church to carry

  13. on his ministry. But there's some urgent things that Paul

  14. wants to convey to Timothy. And as we come to

  15. chapter three, you kind of sense this. He believes false

  16. teaching is a huge issue. There's a huge danger here.

  17. You know, in our house, we have natural gas. And

  18. so that's something that we have in our home. And

  19. You know, the thing about natural gas is natural gas

  20. is colorless. It's tasteless and it's odorless. You can't smell it.

  21. And so one thing that we have in our home

  22. is we have CO2 sensors, carbon monoxide sensors. They're all

  23. through our house. In our house, we have three stories.

  24. We have a basement, first floor and third floor. And

  25. we have a sensor on all three floors. And why

  26. do we do that? Because natural gas is dangerous. And

  27. if there was a leak in our home, we'd want

  28. something to alert us of the danger that might be

  29. in our home. So we put these alarms to always

  30. be looking for what? A dangerous leak. And if there

  31. is a leak, the alarm will detect it and what?

  32. It'll send off an alarm to us that there's natural

  33. gas in our home and for us to call the

  34. gas company, right? So that's in our home because we

  35. know it's danger. We want to be alerted if there

  36. is danger. And that's really the heart of this passage

  37. in chapter 3. Paul knows that there is a danger

  38. that's looking for all believers. There's a danger that you

  39. and I must be aware of. And it is false teaching.

  40. It is sin. And today he wants you and I

  41. to be alerted of this. He wants us to be

  42. prepared for this. And so he wants us to know

  43. what Scripture says about the dangerous times. The title of

  44. my sermon is Dangerous of the Last Days. Do you

  45. realize one of the things that Paul wants us to

  46. see that we're living in the last days? You know,

  47. as we, I think you've heard me say before that

  48. there is this always maybe curiosity around the last days.

  49. What is last days going to look like? What are the,

  50. when is that? When did that occur? And a lot

  51. of times people ask me through the years, through my ministry,

  52. are we living in the last days? And the answer

  53. is yes, we are living in the last days. In

  54. the Bible, it was not only important to us as

  55. church people, it was important to the people in the Bible. Actually,

  56. the prophet Daniel warned about the last days, just like

  57. Paul is here. He says in Daniel 12, 1, and

  58. at that time shall arise Michael and the great prince

  59. who is in charge of people and there shall be

  60. a time of trouble such as never has been since

  61. there was a nation till that time. But at that time,

  62. your people shall be delivered and everyone whose name shall

  63. be found in the written book. Jesus, not only did Daniel,

  64. a prophet, warn about the dangers of the last days,

  65. so did Jesus. Jesus in Mark chapter 13 warned of

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  66. the last days and the dangers of the last days.

  67. And the scripture says in Mark chapter 13 verse 3,

    Mark 13:3

  68. and he sat on the Mount Olives opposed to the

  69. temple and Peter and James and John and Andrew asked

  70. him privately, tell us when will these things be and

  71. what will be the sign when all these are about

  72. to be accomplished and Jesus began to say to them

  73. see that no one leads you astray many will come

  74. in my name saying I am he and they will

  75. lead many astray and we hear of wars and rumors

  76. of war don't be alarmed this must take place but

  77. the end is not yet for the nation will rise

  78. against the nation kingdom against the kingdom and there'll be

  79. earthquakes in various places there'll be famines but these are

  80. beginning of the birth pains but listen to this Jesus

  81. says be You see, Daniel warned of the last days.

  82. Jesus warned of the last days. And why did Jesus

  83. warn us about the last days? Because he wanted us

  84. to what? Be on guard. He wanted us to be alerted.

  85. He wanted us to be prepared. The early church, the

  86. apostles warned us of the last days. In 1 John,

  87. the apostle John wrote, children, it is the last hours

  88. as you've heard that the Antichrist is coming. So many

  89. Antichrists have come. Therefore, we know that it is the

  90. last hour. And so the early church warned us. The Daniel, Jesus,

  91. the early church says, John, and that's what Paul is

  92. doing here. Paul was warning us of the dangers of

  93. the last days. And he wants us, like Jesus, he

  94. wants us to be on guard. He wants us to

  95. be prepared. And so this morning, as we think about

  96. the dangers of the last days, we must be on guard.

  97. We must be prepared. We must be warned. You know,

  98. it's interesting that gas companies do something. Because natural gas

  99. is odorless, they add a little odor, a little... thing

  100. to the the gas to make us recognize that it's

  101. there it kind of smells like rotten eggs they either

  102. they add this little dye to the to the natural

  103. gas so we'll detect it why why do they do

  104. that because they want us to what sense smell and

  105. recognize there's danger that's what Paul's doing here he's putting

  106. us a warning in scripture to warn us of things

  107. that we are to look for so we will be

  108. prepared and the times of danger. So this morning, let's detect,

  109. if you will, the dangers of living in the last days.

  110. And I wonder today, can you detect those? Do you

  111. know what the dangers you're to look for? The gas

  112. companies wants us to detect the smell of those eggs, right,

  113. to detect. Can you detect what the dangers of the

  114. last days are? Do you know how to avoid them?

  115. Avoid them in your life, the life of your family,

  116. life of other believers. Do you know what dangers there are?

  117. Are you avoiding these dangers in your life, in the

  118. life of your family, in the life of others? Let's

  119. look at Scripture, what Scripture says are today the dangers

  120. of the last days. The passage begins, and let's look

  121. at it together. He says, but understand this, understand this is,

  122. is mark this, if you will, or it's the idea of,

  123. I want you to, to recognize this. I want you

  124. to mark this. I want you to remember this. Now,

  125. if you think about something in our, in our life,

  126. if we want to remember something, right, we, we mark

  127. it down. We write it down. Some of you today,

  128. or maybe you want to remember this sermon. So maybe

  129. you're taking notes. So you're, writing down things because you

  130. want to remember, you write it down. If you, or

  131. your wife is sending you to the grocery store, if

  132. you're going to the grocery store, a lot of times

  133. you'll get a list and you'll write down things on

  134. your grocery list. Why? Because you writing it down because

  135. you want to remember it. You don't want to get

  136. in the store and forget it, right? If you're reading

  137. a book and you take a break from where you're reading,

  138. you put a bookmark or you mark where you are

  139. in that because you want to remember what you read.

  140. You'll remember where you were. If you're working in your yard,

  141. maybe you're spraying your yard of weeds or different things.

  142. A lot of times you'll mark with flags to see

  143. where you've been so you can remember where you've been.

  144. That's the imagery here. Jesus and Paul was saying, or

  145. Paul was saying here, Understand this. Remember this. Mark this down.

  146. I want you to remember this in the future so

  147. you can remember what you're to look for. Now look

  148. at what he's saying here, but understand this, that in

  149. the last days, he used this term last days. The

  150. idea for last days is where we get, you may

  151. have heard the term in theology called eschatology. Eschatology, the

  152. first part of that is the understanding of last days.

  153. The ology part is a study of, eschatology is a

  154. study of the last days. Paul brings up this eschatological

  155. idea here, and he's trying to get the church to

  156. think about the eschatological perspective that you are living in

  157. the last days. Now, we think about the last days,

  158. and here he's describing what it will be like in

  159. the last days. But I think it's important for you

  160. to understand, for Paul, Paul and the early church knew

  161. that The last days had already begun. We know that

  162. after Christ died and rose again, the last days had begun.

  163. In Acts chapter 2, we know that because one of

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  164. the descriptions of the last days was not only an

  165. outpouring of sin, as we're going to look at in

  166. a minute, but there's an outpouring of the Spirit. There's

  167. two marks, if you would say, of the last days,

  168. and there will be an outpouring of the Spirit. And

  169. Acts chapter 2 verse 17 described this. It was the

    Acts 2:17

  170. prophet of Joel prophesied about the last days and what

  171. it would be like. And one of the descriptions that

  172. Joel the prophet gave of the last days would be

  173. an outpouring of the Spirit. Outpouring of the Holy Spirit

  174. living and residing in the life of people. And it

  175. said this in Acts chapter 17. In the last days

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  176. it shall be, God declares, I will pour out my

  177. Spirit on all flesh. And your sons and your daughters

  178. shall prophesy and your young men shall see visions. And

  179. your old men shall dream dreams. And they knew when

  180. the Pentecost came. and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit

  181. came at Pentecost, that was a mark that they were

  182. living in the last days. So I would say since

  183. Jesus died and rose again, we've been living in the

  184. last days. So to answer the question that I asked

  185. a minute ago, are we living in the last days? No. Yes,

  186. we've been living in the last days since Jesus rose again.

  187. This is the last days. And one of the marks

  188. of the last days is an outpouring of the Holy Spirit,

  189. according to Acts chapter 2 and Joel. But Paul wants

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  190. us to see one of the marks of living in

  191. the last days is an outpouring of sin. Notice what

  192. he says here. Understand that in the last days, today.

  193. I think sometimes we're guilty of the church individually. is

  194. that we don't have this ecological perspective. We think last

  195. days is something that's coming ahead. Maybe after we, after

  196. we're the next generation, the generation after, maybe that's when

  197. we'll be living in the last days. We're living in

  198. the last days today, right now. It's been happening since

  199. Jesus rose again. We're living in these moments. There is

  200. a pouring of the Holy Spirit and We know that

  201. because the Holy Spirit came to us when we accept

  202. Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. So they're outpouring

  203. the Holy Spirit, but also there's an outpouring of sin.

  204. And today we're living in these last days, and we

  205. have to have a mindset that lives in that reality

  206. that right now, moment by moment, day by day, month

  207. by month, year by year, we're living in the last

  208. moments of eternity. The last moments not of eternity, the

  209. last moments of this earth. We are in the last days.

  210. What will the last days be like? He wants us

  211. to understand this, to mark this, that in the last days,

  212. listen to what he says, there will come times of difficulty.

  213. This word difficulties is an interesting word. It's how Lepos

  214. in the Greek, it means violent, dangerous, hard, difficult. I

  215. think I wanted you to hear that because when we

  216. think difficulty, we think today was a difficult day. Maybe

  217. yesterday it was a little cold and rainy. It was

  218. a difficult day. Couldn't do anything outside. We think that's

  219. what difficulty is, right? It's more than that. This is dangerous.

  220. This is hard. This is violent. This word is only

  221. used twice in the New Testament. It's used here, and

  222. it's used in Matthew 8 of some demons who came

  223. to the disciples and Jesus. It's in Matthew 8, 28,

  224. and when they came to the other side in the

  225. country of the Gadarians, two demon-possessed men met him, and

  226. coming out of the tombs, listen to this, so fierce

  227. that no one could pass that way. The word fierce there,

  228. the fierceness of the demons, is the same Greek word

  229. that Paul uses here for difficulty. As we come into

  230. the last days, listen, it is dangerous. It's dangerous, the

  231. days we're living in today. I want you to notice,

  232. why is it so dangerous? Because first, it's dangerous because

  233. there is an outpouring of sin. These are the dangers

  234. of the last days. There's dangerous sins. And in this,

  235. Paul begins listing, if you will, a list of sins.

  236. This is, um, it's almost a list of vices or

  237. a list of sins. This is something that we see, um,

  238. a lot in scripture is also was, was common among

  239. the Jews to, to have a list of different sins.

  240. It was also common that during this period of time

  241. of writing that philosophers would list different list of sin.

  242. This list contains 18 different items, 18 different sins. Um,

  243. six which only occur in the New Testament, four that

  244. only occur in Timothy. Paul lists here in chapter 2,

  245. it's very similar to another list we found in the

  246. New Testament of Romans. Romans chapter 1, verses 29 through 31,

    Romans 1:29–31

  247. Paul writes a very similar list of sins and he

  248. lists just these different ones. The difference between the two

  249. I think are important is that in Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  250. as Paul is outlining a list of sins, In this

  251. list of sin, he's describing the common sins that were

  252. found in Rome at the time. It was found in

  253. the Gentile world when Paul wrote the book of Romans.

  254. As he's coming to chapter 2, he's not talking about

  255. the current sins that are prevalent in Rome or prevalent

  256. at time. He's writing prevalent sins that will be marks

  257. of the last days. Notice these sins as we walk

  258. through these. I think it's important as you begin this

  259. list and as we walk through these, he begins with

  260. kind of bookends, right? He starts with sins at the beginning,

  261. and the same sins are found at the end of

  262. the book. They're parallel in that they're lovers, right? Look

  263. at the beginning. For the people will be lovers of

  264. self and lovers of money. If you get to the

  265. very last one of this list is, again, the bookend.

  266. It's lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God. You see,

  267. at the beginning of this list, he's seeing that what

  268. flows from all these sin is a substitute. One who

  269. substitutes a love for God for loving something else, right?

  270. What do they love first? They love their self. They

  271. don't love God. They don't desire things of God. They

  272. They are their own God. They love themselves above God.

  273. Loving themselves is their chief desire. They don't seek God.

  274. They seek to find happiness in themselves. That is the

  275. first mark. The second one is the second sin that's

  276. listed is the lover of money. If they don't love themselves,

  277. they love their money. They love their materialism. Their chief

  278. desire in life is to have more. Have more money,

  279. more clothes, more things, more toys, more pleasures. And it's

  280. all found in the great green dollar. Love of money.

  281. But both of these are what? Replace God. Our chief

  282. end of man is to love God, right? And they've

  283. replaced loving God for loving something else. A substitute. And

  284. out of the flow of not loving God and loving

  285. self or loving money, flows all the other sins. Do

  286. you know that? Do you recognize that today? That when

  287. we love ourselves more than we love God, or we

  288. love money or the created things instead of the creator,

  289. all other sins flow from that. And that's what Paul

  290. wants you and I to see here. The marks of

  291. the last days is not an outpouring of the spirit.

  292. The marks of the last days is an outpouring of

  293. sin where we live in a world where people love

  294. themselves more than they love knowing God. where they love

  295. the money and the things of this world more than

  296. they love the one who created the things of the world.

  297. And flowing from that is all the other sins. He

  298. describes there, let's just follow along. Verse 2 says people

  299. will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud. The

  300. word proud here comes from a bounce of swaggering. You

  301. ever seen someone who kind of They have a swag.

  302. They kind of walk around like they are somebody. That's

  303. the imagery. This is the idea of someone who is

  304. proud of themselves. They brag about themselves. They're an arrogant person.

  305. It gives the idea of someone who speaks big words

  306. about himself. One writer described it as one whose mouth

  307. is too big for his body. He likes to brag

  308. about what, or he or she likes to brag about

  309. what they've done and what they've accomplished. They are proud,

  310. and they walk around with a swagger because they think

  311. they are somebody. They strut, if you will. The second,

  312. the next word there is arrogant. The idea of arrogant

  313. is someone who is haughty. This is someone who is

  314. just proud for. They're arrogant. They're an old dog. They

  315. believe that they are God's gift to mankind. They are arrogant.

  316. The next term here is abusive. This word abusive, in

  317. the Greek, it comes down to the idea of words.

  318. They're not abusive physically. They're abusive in the way they

  319. speak to others. In 1 Timothy 6, 4, this term

  320. is used, and it's understand someone who maliciously tears down

  321. someone with their words. They're abusive. The next term is

  322. they're disobedient to their parents. They don't care for their parents.

  323. They don't obey their parents. That's another example of this

  324. outpouring of sin in the last days. The next ones

  325. that flow from that, you may see a connection between

  326. the two. The next four that are listed all begin

  327. with a prefix, And the prefix we see in our language,

  328. if you go to, it will be lovers of self,

  329. lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive. disobedient to the parents.

  330. The next one you see all starts with a prefix

  331. of you in. And so they're not something, right? And

  332. we see that same prefix in the Greek. They're not grateful.

  333. They're ungrateful. You can see this imagery. They don't respect

  334. for their parents. And maybe they're ungrateful for what their

  335. parents have done to them, for them. They're ungrateful. Ungrateful

  336. is the idea of not feeling or showing gratitude. They're ungrateful.

  337. They're not only not grateful, but they're unholy. They're not holy.

  338. This term in the Greek means sinful. They're wicked. They

  339. don't have any desire for the things of God. They're sinful.

  340. They don't desire to be holy. They're ungrateful. This is

  341. seen in 1 Timothy 1.9. As Paul talked about this,

  342. he says, understand that the law is not laid down

  343. for the just, but for the lawless, the disobedient, the ungodly,

  344. the sinner, for the unholy, the profane. It's this idea

  345. of these don't desire the things of God. Scripture says

  346. they are in this here. We don't see the un here,

  347. but this translator is translated as heartless. They have no heart, right?

  348. It's the idea of they're without love. They have a

  349. lack of desire to show affection for others. They're heartless.

  350. They're unappeasable. Unappeasable, actually, the word is unforgiving. They're not forgiving.

  351. Some translations would say they're unforgiving. This idea is they're

  352. not capable of being reconciled to others. This literally in

  353. the Greek means without truce. It means that there's such

  354. a hostility toward others. A truce is not possible for them.

  355. It's impossible. There's no way they'll be willing to reconcile

  356. with others. The next word is slanderous. They're unappeasable there.

  357. I'm sorry. The unforgiving there. The next one is slanderous.

  358. You ever heard the word diabolical? This is the word

  359. in the Greek where we get that word. The word

  360. here literally means to engage in slander. Someone who engages

  361. in slander. We see this in 1 Timothy 3, 11.

  362. Their wives must be good character, not slanderers. The term

  363. may be rendered better or something that we would apply better.

  364. They're gossipers. They slander others. They're busy about gossiping about others,

  365. slandering others with their words. They're without self-control. Scripture says

  366. self-control is the idea of an attitude of mind that

  367. is controlled. They're not able to control themselves. They're not

  368. able to control their mind. They're not able to control

  369. their actions. They're brutal, Scripture says, is the next word here.

  370. They don't love good. Not loving good. This idea for

  371. not loving good is someone who really hates good. And

  372. they really instead replace it with something else more demanding.

  373. They don't love things of good. They don't like it's description.

  374. They're Tetris. That's the idea of literally means they're reckless.

  375. The word means in the Greek to fall headlong. It

  376. means to Be reckless. I feel like we see that

  377. sometimes on the roads, right? You drive around Durham, you think, man,

  378. that guy's Tetris. It means that he's reckless in how

  379. he drives. I mean, we saw, we were going down

  380. the road the other day and someone was trying to

  381. pass on the left side and they went into the

  382. turning lane. And then when they couldn't get across, they

  383. went across and they lost control of their vehicle and

  384. went up on the curb. They were reckless, right? That's

  385. the idea. But this is not in regards to driving.

  386. It's in how they live their life. Swollen with conceit

  387. is the next one here. Without self-control, brooding, not loving, good, treacherous, reckless,

  388. swollen with conceit. The word swollen renders an unwarranted desire

  389. of self-importance. They're conceited. They think they're more important than

  390. they really are. And then he finishes with the last one, right?

  391. The last one is, Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers

  392. of God. You take all 18 together, right? You put

  393. them all together. Starts out with people who say, you know, God,

  394. you created me to be in your image, to love you,

  395. to serve you. And God, I don't want anything to

  396. do with you. Instead, I want to love myself. I

  397. want my happiness to be my chief goal in life.

  398. It'll be those who seek that and be those who

  399. says maybe it's not their happiness, but it is the

  400. happiness of finding love and the things that are created things,

  401. the things of this world. I'm going to love the

  402. pleasures of this world, the material of this world, the

  403. money of this world, and I'm going to find my

  404. happiness in loving the things of the world. But at

  405. the end, they all produce all these different things, arrogance, pride, recklessness, Heartless,

  406. not able to be pleased, appeased, arrogant, abusive, disobedient, ungrateful, unholiness.

  407. And in the end, they love pleasure rather than they

  408. love God. I want you to, you know, I was

  409. thinking about, do I walk as I prepare for this message?

  410. Do I walk you through all of these different ones?

  411. Or do I just kind of read you through them

  412. and let you just kind of deduct in your mind

  413. what each one of these mean? But I think it's

  414. really important for me to go through each one. Why?

  415. Because you need to recognize these. You need to know like, okay,

  416. this is what this means. And here's the thing. Do

  417. I see any of this in me today? Is there

  418. anything in my life that resembles this? And Paul is

  419. wanting me to see that this is dangerous. This is dangerous.

  420. This is violence. This could tear me apart. This could

  421. destroy me. And this was something that Paul warned was

  422. coming in the future to destroy God's people. And I've

  423. got to recognize if this is something Not just maybe

  424. coming in the future, this is here now. And this

  425. is here now meant to destroy me. And if this

  426. is any of this in my life today, Lord, I

  427. need to repent. I need to flee. I need to run.

  428. I need to get this out of my life. Because

  429. it is a cancer that's going to take my very soul.

  430. just yesterday we were or Friday we were coming back

  431. most of you know my I was away this week

  432. and my stepdad passed away and so I was with

  433. my mom all week and we had the funeral on

  434. Thursday and so Friday we we stayed the night there

  435. in Charlotte area and then Friday we went by I

  436. saw my mom and on the way home we were

  437. coming down up 85 and and as we was coming

  438. up 85 I noticed that Traffic started backing up. There

  439. was some type of accident. Something was going on, and

  440. the traffic was backing up pretty quick. And I noticed

  441. kind of in the distance there was this kind of

  442. a black smoke kind of rising. And so I thought, well,

  443. something's happened. There looks like maybe a fire. As we

  444. got closer, we realized it had just happened, and there

  445. was a tanker that was all the way on the

  446. end of the side of the road. And as we

  447. got closer, I noticed it was on fire. Now, you

  448. put in your mind tanker, fire, right? This doesn't look

  449. like a good thing. So what did I do? What

  450. I did was like everybody else did. I got out

  451. of there as quick as I could, right? Because this

  452. is dangerous. This is dangerous. This could explode in my

  453. mind is what I was thinking about. And so I'm

  454. not going to run to it. I'm going to run

  455. from it, right? And that's the imagery that Paul wants

  456. you and I to see. then in the last days,

  457. there's going to be, listen to this, there's going to

  458. be an outpouring of sin. There's an outpouring of sin

  459. in the time of Rome, and that time is going

  460. to get worse than it's ever seen before. Listen, folks,

  461. I'm not trying to be negative Ned today, but what

  462. we've seen in our world is just going to get worse.

  463. It's not going to get better. And we're going to

  464. see more and more lovers of self, lovers of money,

  465. and lovers of pleasure than we've ever seen before, and

  466. we're going to see all the sins that outflow of it.

  467. But as believers in Jesus Christ, we must recognize what

  468. we see that's happening in our world, and we as

  469. believers must be ones who flee from it, who run

  470. from it, who say, I don't want to have any

  471. of this in my life or in the life of

  472. my family, in the life of my friends, or the

  473. life of our church. We must be ones. Who see

  474. the dangers of sin. The dangerous sins of our world.

  475. And we must be ones who flee. Who run. Paul

  476. always says. There's one. In this passage of scripture. There's one.

  477. application that Paul gives, and we're going to look at this.

  478. In verse 5, he describes them having the appearance, rather

  479. than lovers of God, they have the appearance of godliness,

  480. but denying its power. That's why he says, avoid such people.

  481. Avoid it. Avoid the people. Avoid these individuals. which you

  482. see the next part is not only a dangerous sin,

  483. but there's a dangerous deception. He's describing now, not only

  484. the sin, but he's describing who is leading people do this.

  485. And we know one of the issues for, for Paul

  486. leading all the way up to this chapter was false teachers.

  487. And Paul in chapter three, as we looked at the

  488. character of God's people, we are to be people who

  489. try to reach the false teachers or try to minister

  490. to them, try to, to confront them, to discipline them

  491. in order that they might repent, right? We see that.

  492. If you go to chapter 2, verse 25 and 26,

  493. correct his opponents with gentleness, maybe God may perhaps grant

  494. them repentance leading to the knowledge of truth, and they

  495. may come to their senses and escape from the snare

  496. of the devil after being captured by By him to

  497. do his will. See, Paul's goal, right, for Timothy was

  498. for Timothy to confront the false teachers or those who

  499. were going away from God's truth and following false teachers

  500. in the church. He used to do that gently. He

  501. used to discipline them. For the goal of what? To

  502. lead them to repentance, right? That they might turn away

  503. from false teaching and turn back to truth. So that

  504. was the goal, right? That's what we looked at last week.

  505. But as you come to chapter 3, Paul is realist, right?

  506. He knows that's the goal, is the goal is to

  507. corrupt the false teachers and hopefully lead them to repentance.

  508. But reality is, it was not going to end false teaching.

  509. False teaching was going to continue to grow. And that

  510. was going to be part of being in the last days.

  511. As you see the flow of the passage, what in

  512. verse 26, they may come to their senses and escape

  513. the snare of the devil after being captured by him

  514. to do his will. But you see the connection, the

  515. conjunction there. But understand this, in the last days, There'll

  516. be times of difficulty. He said that's the goal to

  517. reach them, but to understand that part of the last

  518. days is there's going to be a continue of growth

  519. of sin, but also there'll continue to be more deception.

  520. There'll become more deceivers. And in chapter, verse 5, he

  521. describes this. These false teachers are leading people to sin.

  522. They're leading people to these dangerous sins, but also they're

  523. leading them, secondly, to dangerous deception. He knows, he says,

  524. they're having the... The appearance of godliness but denying its

  525. power avoids such people. They lead people to sin, but

  526. they also lead them to deception. They lead them to

  527. believe that they can live this wicked lifestyle and that

  528. they're still okay with God. We see that in the

  529. church of Laodicea in Revelation. Jesus in Revelation, the beginning

  530. of chapter, I mean, the beginning of Revelation, Jesus writes

  531. four letters to, I mean, seven letters to seven different

  532. churches in Revelation. And one of the churches is the

  533. church of Thyatira. Thyatira was a church that, It had

  534. a false teacher in there. The false teacher was telling

  535. the people in the church that they can continue in

  536. their sin and they're okay with God. And God confronts

  537. the church at Thyatira and says, put away the false teacher, right?

  538. And what's the idea? The idea of the false teacher

  539. in Thyatira was saying what? You can live this life.

  540. You can live this sin, right? And you can still

  541. be godly. But the imagery here in this verse, they

  542. have the appearance of godliness, right? They act like they're religious,

  543. they act like they're godly, but the reality is they

  544. don't have God's power, but they deny its power. You see,

  545. Christ and Christianity or a relationship with Christ doesn't change them, right?

  546. They just have religion, but they don't have a relationship.

  547. And Paul was explaining that, and let me just walk

  548. through these quickly. He then describes the dangerous deception of

  549. Look at verse 6. He says, among them who creep

  550. into household and capture the weak women and burden them

  551. with sins and led astray by various passions. He's describing

  552. these false teachers. And he's really one of the things

  553. that Paul wants them to know and wants us to know,

  554. the kind of people that are dealing with. These are deceivers.

  555. And we're going to look at that in a little bit.

  556. But what is their goal? Their goal is to lead

  557. to a dangerous deception, that they deceive people. And he

  558. gives the ones that they're really preying on in the

  559. early church here. Look at verse 5. It's almost like

  560. a scary movie here. They're sneaking into a household there.

  561. And he's talking about the households of God. It's the church.

  562. And who are they capturing? They're capturing the weak women.

  563. This idea of weak women here literally means little women.

  564. it's not meaning that their stature or how tall they

  565. are or that they're little. It's the idea of they're feeble,

  566. not physically but spiritually. It's the idea of moral weakness.

  567. They're prone to fall into something. And what do they do? Again,

  568. they creep in, and the term here is they gain control.

  569. It's the idea of they take them captive. The word

  570. in the Greek here is literally a word that's used

  571. for prisoners of war. Their goal is to take them captive,

  572. to captivate them or capture them spiritually. You see that

  573. term in verse 6. Listen to what it says. How

  574. did they capture them? They burdened them with sins. And

  575. they led, in the end of verse 6, and they

  576. led them astray by various passions. There's this goal of

  577. the false teachers is what? It's to capture people to

  578. pray on the weak in the church, those who really

  579. probably don't know their Bible like they should, those who

  580. are maybe weak in their faith, and they creep into

  581. the church and they pray on the weak. And how

  582. do they pray on them? They seek to capture them.

  583. And how do they capture them? They capture them, they

  584. burden them with what sin? You see the imagery there.

  585. They burden them with sins that The idea of the

  586. verb here is to heap on. They burden them down

  587. with more and more sin. The sin becomes a burden,

  588. and they lead them astray with various passions, it says.

  589. That's the goal, is to capture. I think of this,

  590. I need to finish up here today, but as you

  591. think about this, you think about what's happened in our

  592. news just last year, the story of Sam Bateman. who

  593. was a false teacher in Utah, who came and told

  594. his followers, this was the Latter-day Saints, it's a sect

  595. off of them, but he told his followers that they

  596. must give his wife and his children to him as

  597. spiritual wives. He required that of them. He forced his

  598. followers to give him money, to provide money for him

  599. to buy him a house, to buy different houses, to

  600. buy cars. Again, it's burdening with his followers with him,

  601. these things. And here's what my fear is. I was

  602. thinking this preparing. I was thinking about telling you that story,

  603. and you were like, oh, a pastor, that's not. I mean,

  604. I know that's the big deal. It's happening in cults

  605. like the Mormons, but that doesn't happen here. Have you

  606. seen and heard the story of the death of a

  607. pastor's wife? It was a pastor of an evangelical church

  608. in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. And that pastor, J.P. Miller,

  609. did the same thing in a different way to his

  610. followers in his church, to his wife. He burdened them

  611. and says, this is what you've got to do to

  612. really follow Christ. And he led them away and he

  613. captured them. Listen, it happens in all across our world today.

  614. And I want you to hear today from Paul, from

  615. the word of God, that there's a danger of sins,

  616. but there is a danger of deception that's in our

  617. world today. And you and I, listen, we live naive

  618. to think cults and false teaching, that's what other countries

  619. deal with. We don't deal with false teaching in America. Listen,

  620. false teaching today is just as alive and well and

  621. deadly today in America than it is anywhere else in

  622. the world. Actually, I think it's more deadly here than

  623. it is anywhere else. Because here's the reason why. They

  624. recognize it as false teaching in other worlds. You and

  625. I don't recognize it as false teaching. And you and

  626. I have lost the sense. to be able to detect

  627. when there is a deception, but it's before us. And

  628. we toy with deception, not realizing it's seeking to hold

  629. us captive, to capture our family members and our friends

  630. and our loved ones, our church body that's seeking to

  631. prey on the weak. I want to finish up lastly,

  632. and that's the dangerous of deceivers, Paul says. There's dangerous

  633. sins and there's dangerous deception that seeks to capture people,

  634. the weak, But there's also dangerous deceivers who are actively

  635. seeking to target God's people. And that is a mark

  636. of the last days. It is one of the things

  637. of the last days. Listen look verse 8 he suggests

  638. as Janice and Jambres opposed Moses I'll quickly go through

  639. this in Exodus chapter 7 verses 11 through 12 Pharaoh

    Exodus 7:11–12

  640. when Moses came in Exodus and to deliver God's people

  641. we know that God gave Moses the ability to do

  642. perform miracles right Pharaoh opposed Moses. How did he do that?

  643. He did that through magicians. If you remember the story,

  644. Moses would do a sign and then Pharaoh would bring

  645. a magician out and he would copy what Moses did.

  646. Throughout church history in Judaism and Christianity, they began giving

  647. the names of who these magicians were. And by 150 BC,

  648. these two magicians were named. They were named Janus and Jambres.

  649. Paul knows that in this passage of scripture. He knows

  650. that Timothy knows this and those who would read 1

  651. Timothy would know that Janice and Jambres were the magicians

  652. who used to oppose God. And so Paul is using

  653. this as an illustration. Illustration that there would be those

  654. deceivers who come up, right, who seek to oppose God's

  655. word and truth. Just as Moses spoke the word of

  656. God and there were deceivers who rose up to what?

  657. Oppose God's word. They would be deceivers who would rise

  658. up in the time of Timothy and who would rise

  659. up today who seek, whose sole purpose is to oppose

  660. the truth of the word of God. Listen to what

  661. he says here in this passage. Just as Janice and

  662. Jambres opposed God, so these men also opposed truth. Men

  663. opposed What are they? Corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding

  664. the faith. There are today deceivers in our world. John

  665. said that at the very beginning of the passage of Scripture.

  666. I read to you in 1 John, right? Children, in

  667. the last hour, as you've heard, the end of Christ

  668. is coming and many antichrists, false teachers have come. Therefore,

  669. we know that it is the last hours. There are

  670. deceivers today. Who are actively seeking to oppose the word

  671. of God. Some of that comes in the form of

  672. liberal theology. Some of it comes in a false teacher

  673. like Joseph Smith. There's many different forms. But know there

  674. are deceivers today. And they're dangerous. Dangerous sins. Dangerous deception.

  675. Dangerous deceivers. Church today. What does God command us? What's

  676. right in this passage of scripture. Look at verse 5.

  677. having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power, avoid

  678. such people. We must avoid sin, the dangerous sins of

  679. the world. We must avoid dangerous deception, and we must

  680. avoid dangerous deceivers. Today, you recognize we're living in the

  681. last days. Do you know how to detect them? The sin,

  682. the deception, the deceivers? And how are you avoiding? Let's

  683. pray together. Lord, we love you. We thank you, Lord,

  684. for your word today. We thank you, Lord, today. That, Lord,

  685. you want us to recognize we're living in the last days. And, Lord,

  686. you don't want us just to conceptually recognize that in

  687. our minds. But, God, you want us to live on guard.

  688. Recognizing the dangerous sins that are of our world. Recognizing

  689. the dangerous deception that's in our world today. And recognizing

  690. that there are deceivers who are corrupt, who seek to oppose, Lord,

  691. your word. Lord, may we be your people today who

  692. live on guard. Avoid these things who protect our families

  693. and our friends, our loved ones, our church body. from

  694. these dangerous sins, this dangerous deception, and these dangerous deceivers. Lord,

  695. we love you. We thank you, Lord, for your word.

  696. We thank you, Lord, for how you've spoken to us today. Lord,

  697. if there's someone here today that doesn't know you as

  698. Lord and Savior, maybe today they have replaced a love

  699. for you for a love for self. Maybe today they've

  700. been living for money and the pleasures of material things.

  701. And Lord, they found themselves empty today. It's more that

  702. they pursue things of this world. They realize that there's

  703. no satisfaction in the things of this world. Lord, only

  704. you will satisfy their soul. Maybe there's some today that

  705. realize they live for their own pleasure rather than pleasing you, God.

  706. And I pray that it be those today that say, Lord,

  707. I don't want to love myself. I don't want to

  708. love the things of this world. I don't want to

  709. love my pleasure. Lord, today I want to love you, Lord.

  710. I pray there'd be those who admit that they're a sinner,

  711. they've sinned against you. Lord, today I hope there'd be

  712. those who say, Lord, I believe that you died on

  713. the cross for me. Lord, today I want to confess

  714. that I need you today, Jesus. Lord, I want to

  715. love you first above all else. Lord, forgive me. Lord,

  716. today I put my faith in you for salvation. Lord,

  717. come save me today. I give you my life. Lord,

  718. I pray there'd be those who make a prayer like

  719. that today. Lord, however you lead us today and as

  720. we respond, Lord, I pray this would be a time, Lord,

  721. that we respond to, Lord, how you've spoken. In your

  722. name we pray. Amen.
