  1. Well, good morning, church. Let me invite you to turn to Acts chapter 4, verses 1 through 22,

    Acts 4:1–22

  2. ! as we continue our series in the book of Acts today. That is page 857 or 868 in the pew Bible,

  3. depending on which edition you have. Acts chapter 4. So we're picking up in the middle of the story.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  4. Last week we saw in chapter 3 how the risen and ascended Jesus performed a miracle through Peter

  5. and John by healing a man who had been lame since birth. Then in the rest of chapter 3, Peter went

  6. on to explain the significance of this event, this healing. And the significance was this, that the

  7. crucified and risen Jesus was indeed the Messiah, the one appointed by God to bring about the restoration

  8. of all things, and that the healing of this man was a sign confirming the truth of what the apostles

  9. were teaching about Jesus. Now chapter 4 continues the story of that day in the temple courts. What

  10. happens when the ruling authorities start to catch wind of what the apostles are teaching? What happens

  11. when the message about Jesus reaches the ears of the powers that be? All right, well, let me pray for us,

  12. and then I'll read our text. Father, we thank you that we get to come to your word this morning,

  13. this life-giving word that for generation after generation has proclaimed your saving power in Christ our

  14. Lord. Lord, we ask for the Spirit's help this morning. Lord, that we would be able to truly hear

  15. what it is you are saying to us, and that in hearing we would believe, we would respond in repentance and

  16. faith, and that we would glorify and worship you with our whole lives. Father, we ask this in the mighty

  17. name of Jesus. Amen. All right, Acts 4, 1 through 22. And they, oh, sorry, and as they, that is Peter and John,

  18. as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon

  19. them, greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from

  20. the dead. And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already

  21. evening. But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about

  22. five thousand. On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem

  23. with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander and all who were of the high priestly family.

  24. And when they had set them in their midst, they inquired, By what power or by what name did you do this?

  25. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders,

  26. if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has

  27. been healed, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus

  28. Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by him this man is standing

  29. before you well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the

  30. cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men

  31. by which we must be saved. Now, when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and perceived that they

  32. were uneducated, common men, they were astonished and they recognized that they had been with Jesus.

  33. But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition.

  34. But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, saying,

  35. what should we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them

  36. as evidence to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. But in order that it may

  37. spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.

  38. So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

  39. But Peter and John answered them, whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you

  40. rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.

  41. And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them because

  42. of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened, for the man on whom this sign of healing

  43. was performed was more than forty years old." So apparently there was an English bishop who once complained,

  44. he complained that he didn't seem to be having the same impact as the first apostles.

  45. Everywhere they went, he said, there was a riot. Everywhere I go, they serve tea.

  46. How about us today? What sort of impact does our message in our life together have?

  47. The earliest Christian movement was full of a message so dynamic and so transformative

  48. that when it came into contact with the status quo, with the powers that be,

  49. with the ones who were kind of comfortably in charge, there was resistance, there was opposition.

  50. At times there was a riot. Why? What was it about the Christian message that made it so disruptive?

  51. Well, part of the message that made it disruptive then and that still makes it disruptive today is what we find in verse 12.

  52. Look again at this verse in the very middle of our passage.

  53. According to the apostles, Jesus is the world's only savior.

  54. There is salvation in no one else.

  55. For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

  56. Now, I want to spend some time this morning unpacking that central verse.

  57. And after we unpack it, then I want to walk briefly through the rest of the passage and look at some applications that this text has for us today.

  58. So we have a really kind of simple outline this morning. We're going to look at verse 12 and then we're going to walk through the passage and apply it.

  59. Okay?

  60. So, verse 12.

  61. Look, I think we have to admit, right, that at first this verse strikes us as incredibly challenging, does it not?

  62. Because it is saying in no uncertain terms that Jesus is the world's only savior. There is salvation in no one else.

  63. Now, there might be some helpful teaching. There might be some good advice.

  64. There might be some practical wisdom in other teachers and other philosophers and other world views.

  65. But there is salvation only in Jesus.

  66. Now, that, of course, runs right up against the religious pluralism of our day, doesn't it?

  67. We like to think that there are many paths up the mountain, as it were, right?

  68. And that if someone is sincere and if someone is well-meaning, then they'll eventually get to the top, right?

  69. There isn't one way. There are many right ways.

  70. But I think we have to examine that belief for a second that we have.

  71. Let's examine that belief for a second. Let's examine the belief that there are many paths and that they all lead to the same place if you're sincere and well-meaning.

  72. I think, first, it's worth pointing out that that belief is itself a particular and even exclusive belief.

  73. I think it was Leslie Newbigin who pointed this out with particular power.

  74. Leslie Newbigin was a 20th century theologian and missionary, and he spent a lot of time on the mission field and then came back to the West and realized that the West was also a mission field.

  75. And Newbigin said, you know, he said, here's what we tend to think.

  76. He said, in our pluralistic society, we tend to think that the different world religions and different life philosophies are all sort of grappling different aspects of the same reality,

  77. but that none of them can claim to grasp ultimate truth.

  78. He said, we sort of think that we're all kind of like blind men grabbing different parts of an elephant, right?

  79. One of them grabs the leg and says, oh, absolute truth is a tree, right?

  80. One of them grabs the trunk and says, oh, this animal must be a snake, right?

  81. One of them grabs the tail and says, oh, no, it's a rope.

  82. But, of course, none of them grasps the whole truth.

  83. None of them sees the truth absolutely.

  84. And that's how it is with different religions, different worldviews.

  85. They all see only part of the truth.

  86. Newbigin says that's how we tend to think.

  87. And at first that sounds kind of plausible, right?

  88. It sounds kind of nice.

  89. Makes some sense to us today.

  90. But here's the problem.

  91. That whole picture, that kind of metaphor, it assumes something.

  92. It assumes that you, that you actually can see absolute truth, doesn't it?

  93. That you, the religious pluralist, are able to step back and see the whole picture as it really is.

  94. You can see the whole elephant, and you can see those blind men trying to grasp it.

  95. You claim to see the whole mountain that those paths are trying to climb.

  96. In fact, you claim to have the ultimate view that takes it all in.

  97. The view that is really true for everyone.

  98. So you see what that means?

  99. It means that the kind of pluralist view, that at first sounds kind of broad and inclusive at first,

  100. actually does the very same thing that other religions and philosophies,

  101. according to the pluralist, can't and shouldn't do, right?

  102. The pluralist view is making an absolute claim.

  103. Right?

  104. Do you see that?

  105. And it means that the pluralist view and the Christian view are actually doing the same thing.

  106. They're both making an absolute claim to reality.

  107. And that claim to reality inevitably excludes other views.

  108. Think about it.

  109. If you say to me,

  110. hey, did you hear that the Brewers won the series against the Dodgers?

  111. And I say to you,

  112. no, no.

  113. I believe all the teams won the series against the Dodgers.

  114. Like, both of our views exclude the other, right?

  115. They're both kind of narrow and exclusive in their own way

  116. because they're both making a claim to what's really real.

  117. Now, why am I saying all this?

  118. I'm saying all this because as we come to a text like Acts 4,

  119. we can't just dismiss Christianity out of hand by saying,

  120. oh, it's so narrow and exclusive.

  121. Every view of reality excludes some other views.

  122. We're all kind of exclusive in that sense.

  123. We have to be.

  124. And the real problem with the pluralist view

  125. that we all sort of have this default in, in our culture,

  126. is that honestly, it's a bit narrow and exclusive

  127. without even realizing it and without even admitting it.

  128. It's fine if you want to think that all religions

  129. are blindly grasping an elephant

  130. or charting a different path up a mountain.

  131. But you have to also admit that when you claim that,

  132. you are claiming to have the God's eye view of everything,

  133. just like the other religions are.

  134. No?

  135. No?

  136. Okay, so with that being said,

  137. what are the apostles claiming here in Acts 4?

  138. Why?

  139. Why are they willing to say

  140. that there is salvation in no one else but in Jesus alone?

  141. Why do they make that particular claim?

  142. And why should we consider it this morning?

  143. Well, this idea that there is salvation in Jesus alone

  144. is what's sometimes called in theology the exclusivity of Christ.

  145. Now, what does one mean by that phrase, the exclusivity of Christ?

  146. We have to be really careful because it does not mean

  147. that Jesus is a Savior for some people and not for others,

  148. that Jesus sort of excludes people by who He is.

  149. That's not what we mean by the exclusivity of Christ.

  150. Rather, it means that according to Christianity,

  151. humanity cannot find salvation anywhere else except in Him,

  152. that He is the one and only Savior.

  153. That's what we mean when we talk about the exclusivity of Christ,

  154. that salvation is only found in Him.

  155. But here's the important thing to realize.

  156. Why does the New Testament make that claim?

  157. Why is that what the apostles taught?

  158. We have to understand that for the apostles,

  159. for the whole New Testament,

  160. the exclusivity of Jesus Christ in that sense,

  161. that He is the only Savior,

  162. is rooted in the singularity of Jesus Christ.

  163. In other words, salvation is only found in Jesus

  164. because no one else is like Jesus.

  165. He is utterly unique.

  166. So let's consider then the uniqueness of this claim.

  167. And the first thing we have to consider

  168. when we think about Jesus being the only Savior

  169. is that Jesus claims to offer a unique salvation.

  170. Look at verse 2.

  171. What is it that made the temple authorities

  172. so greatly annoyed at the apostles?

  173. Well, because they were teaching the people

  174. and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

  175. That's what annoyed them.

  176. They were proclaiming in Jesus

  177. the resurrection from the dead.

  178. You see, friends,

  179. Christianity holds forth a very unique salvation.

  180. Why?

  181. Because the Christian view of salvation

  182. is not just spiritual or emotional,

  183. but material and tangible.

  184. The Christian understanding of salvation

  185. is that God will put the whole world,

  186. the whole of creation,

  187. right again.

  188. He will not just restore our souls,

  189. but our bodies too.

  190. Not just our minds,

  191. but our relationships.

  192. That's why the healing of the man in chapter 3

  193. is such an important sign

  194. that we looked at last week.

  195. What is a sign?

  196. Well, a sign isn't the reality itself, right?

  197. But it points to that reality.

  198. The wholeness of this man's body in chapter 3

  199. is a sign pointing to the reality

  200. of the complete restoration

  201. that Jesus will bring

  202. when He returns and makes all things new.

  203. When sickness, death, and decay

  204. will be no more,

  205. and creation will be liberated

  206. to sing in freedom.

  207. Because the curse of sin and death

  208. is banished once for all.

  209. You know, it's interesting.

  210. You read the story in Acts 3

  211. of the man rejoicing

  212. because he's been healed.

  213. And then you go back in the Psalms

  214. and you read these Psalms

  215. where it says,

  216. when God finally comes in fullness,

  217. the trees are going to clap their hands

  218. and the mountains are going to rejoice.

  219. All of creation is going to sing

  220. like this man who had been set free

  221. from this disability.

  222. But how can we be sure

  223. that's going to happen?

  224. Because in Jesus' own resurrection,

  225. it's already happened.

  226. His own resurrection,

  227. when God the Son took on human flesh,

  228. took on our nature,

  229. and rose from the dead,

  230. it is as if the thick ice

  231. of sin and death

  232. had been cracked once and for all.

  233. And what's true of Him

  234. because He has united Himself

  235. to us will be true

  236. of all creation one day

  237. because He is creation's Lord.

  238. But friends, at the center

  239. of this unique salvation

  240. that Jesus offers

  241. isn't just the healing

  242. of the material creation,

  243. as glorious as that is.

  244. At the center

  245. is the healing

  246. of our relationship

  247. with our Creator.

  248. At the heart of the unique salvation

  249. that Christianity holds forth

  250. to all who believe

  251. is nothing less

  252. than reconciliation

  253. with God.

  254. To know God.

  255. To really

  256. know Him.

  257. Not as some distant force,

  258. not as a stern judge,

  259. but as a loving

  260. heavenly Father

  261. who forgives all your sins

  262. and faults and flaws,

  263. who provides comfort

  264. in every trial,

  265. who rejoices over you

  266. with love.

  267. Christianity offers

  268. this unique salvation.

  269. It says,

  270. God will now be your God

  271. and you will be loved

  272. as His son,

  273. as His daughter,

  274. and nothing will separate you

  275. from this love

  276. in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  277. So this is what Christianity

  278. means by salvation,

  279. reconciliation with God,

  280. and the renewal

  281. of all creation.

  282. But this unique salvation

  283. is found

  284. in a unique Savior.

  285. Why is salvation

  286. found in Jesus alone?

  287. What makes Him

  288. unique?

  289. Well, three things,

  290. actually.

  291. First,

  292. He has a unique identity.

  293. Jesus is a unique

  294. person.

  295. He alone

  296. is fully human

  297. and fully God.

  298. Two natures

  299. in one person.

  300. No other religious leader,

  301. no other wise philosopher

  302. was ever

  303. the incarnate Son

  304. of the Father.

  305. Only in Jesus Christ

  306. did the one true

  307. eternal God

  308. take on human flesh

  309. and live our human life

  310. in every way.

  311. The book of Hebrews

  312. even says that Jesus

  313. was tempted

  314. in every way as we are,

  315. except without sin.

  316. Right?

  317. Now, of course,

  318. there have been people

  319. throughout history

  320. who have claimed

  321. to be God, right?

  322. Most of them

  323. were rightly dismissed

  324. as being mentally unstable.

  325. But for the followers

  326. of Jesus,

  327. they saw His deeds

  328. and they heard His claims

  329. and their conclusion

  330. was not that He was

  331. out of His mind,

  332. but that in Him

  333. they were,

  334. impossible as it might seem,

  335. beholding the glory

  336. of God in human flesh.

  337. And consider the claims

  338. that Jesus Himself made.

  339. John 14, 6,

  340. Jesus said,

  341. I am the way,

  342. the truth,

  343. and the life.

  344. No one comes to the Father

  345. but through Me.

  346. Or Matthew 11, 27,

  347. where Jesus says,

  348. all things have been handed

  349. over to Me by My Father,

  350. and no one knows

  351. the Father except the Son,

  352. and no one knows

  353. the Father,

  354. no one knows the Son

  355. except the Father,

  356. and no one knows

  357. the Father except the Son,

  358. and anyone to whom

  359. the Son chooses

  360. to reveal Him.

  361. Could you imagine

  362. hearing Jesus on that day

  363. saying,

  364. no one knows

  365. the Father except the Son?

  366. Okay, Jesus,

  367. you have a unique

  368. knowledge of God.

  369. But then He turns around

  370. and says,

  371. no one knows the Son

  372. except the Father.

  373. His being is so glorious,

  374. so deep,

  375. so profound,

  376. that the only one

  377. who could possibly

  378. comprehend Him

  379. is God Himself.

  380. Could you imagine

  381. if I said that?

  382. What a crazy thing to say.

  383. And yet,

  384. as the disciples

  385. follow Jesus

  386. throughout His ministry,

  387. they start to think,

  388. goodness gracious,

  389. I think He might be right.

  390. Jesus was stating

  391. very clearly

  392. that He was equal

  393. to the Father,

  394. and therefore,

  395. no one could know

  396. the Father except through Him.

  397. So when Peter says

  398. in Acts 4

  399. that there's salvation

  400. in no one else,

  401. He's actually proclaiming

  402. what Jesus Himself taught,

  403. that Jesus,

  404. He alone,

  405. is the way back

  406. to the Father.

  407. But you see,

  408. it's not just

  409. Jesus' unique person.

  410. That makes Him

  411. the only Savior.

  412. It's also His unique work.

  413. Because He is a unique person,

  414. fully God and fully human,

  415. He can accomplish

  416. a unique work.

  417. Listen to how Peter

  418. sums it up in verse 10.

  419. He says,

  420. Let it be known

  421. to all of you

  422. and to all the people

  423. of Israel

  424. that by the name

  425. of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

  426. whom you crucified,

  427. whom God raised

  428. from the dead,

  429. by Him this man

  430. is standing before you well.

  431. Whom you crucified,

  432. whom God raised

  433. from the dead.

  434. What makes Jesus different

  435. than some of the other

  436. religious leaders,

  437. even those who have

  438. made claims to be divine?

  439. You know,

  440. there have been others,

  441. people who have claimed

  442. to be divine,

  443. and not all of them

  444. were written off

  445. as mentally unstable.

  446. What makes Jesus different

  447. than the Egyptian pharaohs

  448. who claim to be divine?

  449. What makes Jesus different

  450. than the Buddha,

  451. who even if the Buddha

  452. didn't teach that He was divine,

  453. a lot of other people

  454. around Him

  455. thought that He might be?

  456. Friends,

  457. is it not this,

  458. that Jesus Christ

  459. came to do a unique thing

  460. amidst all the world religions,

  461. He came to lay down

  462. His life

  463. in the place of sinners.

  464. He didn't come

  465. just to teach

  466. a way of godliness

  467. or teach a way

  468. of enlightenment.

  469. He came actually

  470. to stand

  471. in the place

  472. of the condemned

  473. and to be judged

  474. and punished

  475. in their place

  476. so that they could

  477. be forgiven

  478. and set free

  479. from the penalty

  480. of sin and death.

  481. In short, friends,

  482. no other religious leader

  483. died for your sins.

  484. Who else saw us

  485. in our plight

  486. as lost sinners

  487. under the just

  488. sentence of death?

  489. Who else emptied himself

  490. of heavenly glory

  491. and honor

  492. and took the form

  493. of a servant for us?

  494. Who else

  495. didn't just come

  496. and say,

  497. well, if you want

  498. to get out

  499. from under that,

  500. you've got to do

  501. all these things,

  502. but said,

  503. I'll do the thing.

  504. I'll stand

  505. in your place

  506. and bear the wrath

  507. that you deserve.

  508. Who else

  509. loved us

  510. that much?

  511. Loved us

  512. to the point

  513. of laying down

  514. His life for us.

  515. Only Jesus Christ.

  516. Why is He

  517. the only Savior?

  518. Because only He

  519. atoned for our sins

  520. through His death

  521. and only He

  522. rose again

  523. on the third day

  524. for our justification.

  525. And He rose

  526. so that all

  527. who trust in Him,

  528. all who come

  529. to unite themselves

  530. to Him

  531. through faith,

  532. all who do that

  533. will receive

  534. the same

  535. verdict

  536. that the Father

  537. spoke over Jesus

  538. on that first

  539. Easter morning.

  540. You see what was being

  541. said in the resurrection?

  542. The powers that be

  543. said Jesus was guilty,

  544. He was a criminal,

  545. He was condemned,

  546. He was a blasphemer,

  547. but in the resurrection

  548. the Father spoke

  549. over the Son

  550. this word,

  551. He is the righteous

  552. one.

  553. He is my Son.

  554. Death has no

  555. holder over Him.

  556. He lives no more

  557. to die.

  558. And in His life

  559. we live.

  560. His was a unique work.

  561. Only Jesus died

  562. and rose again

  563. for our salvation.

  564. And you see,

  565. because of His unique work

  566. and because of His

  567. unique person

  568. and because of His

  569. unique person

  570. having accomplished

  571. that unique work,

  572. Jesus now occupies

  573. a unique office,

  574. a unique standing.

  575. In verse 11,

  576. Peter quotes

  577. Psalm 118.22.

  578. He says,

  579. this Jesus

  580. is the stone

  581. that was rejected

  582. by you,

  583. the builders,

  584. which has become

  585. the cornerstone.

  586. Quoting Psalm 118.22.

  587. You see,

  588. the rulers

  589. and authorities

  590. of Jesus' day

  591. refused

  592. to receive Him

  593. and instead

  594. they rejected Him.

  595. But when God

  596. raised Him up,

  597. God was declaring

  598. that Jesus

  599. is indeed

  600. all that He claimed

  601. to be.

  602. And God

  603. made Jesus,

  604. according to Peter,

  605. that cornerstone.

  606. Or actually,

  607. better,

  608. it's a capstone,

  609. right?

  610. It's the rock

  611. that sits at the top

  612. of an arch

  613. and it holds it

  614. all together.

  615. In other words,

  616. God has made

  617. and God has established

  618. the risen Jesus

  619. as the key figure

  620. in His plan

  621. for the restoration

  622. of His people

  623. and the renewal

  624. of the whole creation.

  625. That's why in verse 12,

  626. Peter can say,

  627. there's no other name

  628. under heaven

  629. given among men

  630. by which we must be saved.

  631. The Father gave

  632. His one and only Son

  633. for this role

  634. and He demonstrated it

  635. by raising Him

  636. from the dead.

  637. The Father has seated Him

  638. at His right hand.

  639. Listen to how Paul speaks

  640. to the same thing

  641. in Philippians 2,

  642. 8-11.

  643. He says,

  644. of Jesus being found

  645. in human form,

  646. He humbled Himself

  647. by becoming obedient

  648. to the point of death,

  649. even death on a cross.

  650. Therefore,

  651. God has highly exalted Him

  652. and bestowed on Him

  653. the name that is

  654. above every name

  655. so that at the name

  656. of Jesus

  657. every knee should bow

  658. in heaven

  659. and on earth

  660. and under the earth

  661. and every tongue confess

  662. that Jesus Christ

  663. is Lord

  664. to the glory

  665. of God the Father.

  666. So on the basis

  667. of His unique identity,

  668. His unique work

  669. and His unique status,

  670. Jesus is the only Savior.

  671. So friends,

  672. what are you trusting in today?

  673. Perhaps on the one hand,

  674. our vision needs

  675. to be expanded

  676. so that you can see

  677. the fullness

  678. of this unique salvation

  679. that God has in store.

  680. God's plan is to remove

  681. all sin, death,

  682. and decay

  683. from His creation.

  684. He's working

  685. to reconcile sinners

  686. to Himself

  687. not so that they can

  688. grovel in fear

  689. before Him

  690. but so that they can

  691. worship and love Him

  692. as His children.

  693. But if that is the salvation

  694. that God has in store,

  695. what are you trusting in

  696. to be a part of it?

  697. The truth is, friends,

  698. we need a Savior.

  699. We need someone

  700. to forgive our sins.

  701. We need someone

  702. to remove the curse

  703. of death from us.

  704. We need someone

  705. to bring us out

  706. from under the wrath

  707. of God

  708. that our sins deserve.

  709. But what will do that?

  710. Will our good works

  711. be enough

  712. to kind of cancel

  713. that debt that we owe?

  714. No.

  715. Will sincere religious effort

  716. be enough

  717. to work our way back

  718. out from under

  719. the curse of death?

  720. No.

  721. And if you trust

  722. in any of those things,

  723. you will remain

  724. in your sins,

  725. alienated from God

  726. and far off

  727. from His salvation.

  728. But friends,

  729. here's the good news.

  730. That great debt

  731. that we owe,

  732. Jesus paid it all.

  733. What you could not do,

  734. He did in your place.

  735. And if you entrust

  736. your life to Him,

  737. He will clothe you

  738. with His righteousness.

  739. And His saving death

  740. will wash away your sins

  741. and you will be saved.

  742. Jesus is the only Savior,

  743. yes,

  744. and He receives

  745. everyone who comes to Him.

  746. No one who comes to Him

  747. will be turned away.

  748. And if you have trusted in Christ

  749. as your and the only Savior,

  750. what do we see

  751. in the rest of this passage?

  752. What does living

  753. in light of this truth

  754. that Christ is the only Savior

  755. mean for us

  756. as we live for Him?

  757. Well, let's walk through

  758. the passage

  759. and just point out

  760. a few things

  761. as we wrap up.

  762. First,

  763. consider that

  764. our message about Jesus

  765. ought to both

  766. annoy

  767. and attract.

  768. We saw in verse 2

  769. how the message

  770. of the gospel

  771. greatly annoyed

  772. the temple authorities,

  773. right?

  774. I love that word

  775. that Luke chose there.

  776. But look at what Luke

  777. tells us in verse 4.

  778. The temple authorities

  779. were greatly annoyed,

  780. but many of those

  781. who had heard the word

  782. believed,

  783. and the number of men

  784. came to about 5,000.

  785. The message of Jesus

  786. and the resurrection

  787. was both challenging

  788. and compelling.

  789. It was both

  790. greatly annoying

  791. and wonderfully attractive

  792. all at the same time.

  793. And friends,

  794. that's how it will always be.

  795. Every time,

  796. every place,

  797. every culture

  798. will have things within it

  799. that when confronted

  800. with the gospel,

  801. it will find both attractive

  802. and repulsive.

  803. Right?

  804. Think of us today.

  805. The gospel is a message

  806. of forgiveness,

  807. of love,

  808. of unity,

  809. of misdifference.

  810. And those things resonate

  811. deeply with our culture,

  812. do they not?

  813. But the gospel is also

  814. a message that says

  815. you are not your own.

  816. You were bought with a price.

  817. Your personal freedom

  818. and expression

  819. must come under

  820. the lordship of Christ.

  821. And we don't like that one bit.

  822. Right?

  823. No thanks.

  824. And so,

  825. as we are sharing the gospel

  826. and living the gospel

  827. as a church,

  828. we shouldn't be surprised

  829. if people are offended

  830. by the claims of the gospel.

  831. People will be greatly annoyed.

  832. That's how it always been.

  833. But,

  834. we should also expect

  835. that the gospel will

  836. at the same time

  837. attract.

  838. Right?

  839. Because it's a life-giving message.

  840. And if we find,

  841. if we find

  842. that there's only one

  843. or the other,

  844. people are only kind of

  845. comforted and attracted,

  846. people are only kind of

  847. offended and repulsed,

  848. if we find that it's only

  849. one or the other,

  850. we may be missing something

  851. in our message.

  852. Second application.

  853. Not only does the message

  854. of Jesus both annoy

  855. and attract,

  856. but we should also

  857. be praying

  858. and looking for opportunities

  859. to turn our conversations

  860. and interactions

  861. explicitly to who Jesus is

  862. and what he's done.

  863. Notice how in the second

  864. paragraph of our passage,

  865. Peter and John

  866. are brought to trial

  867. and the authorities say,

  868. tell us by what power

  869. and by what name,

  870. that is,

  871. tell us by what authority

  872. you're doing all this.

  873. And think about Peter.

  874. Peter could have said,

  875. well, gee,

  876. you know,

  877. we prayed

  878. and look what happened.

  879. God just happened

  880. to heal this guy.

  881. I don't know,

  882. it's pretty surprising to us too.

  883. I mean,

  884. you're not going to just

  885. punish us

  886. for a good deed, right?

  887. I mean,

  888. we're all in agreement

  889. that people need to be helped,

  890. right?

  891. Peter could have answered

  892. that way.

  893. But instead of kind of

  894. backtracking,

  895. what does Peter do?

  896. He says this,

  897. he says,

  898. well,

  899. if you're really asking me

  900. how this man was healed,

  901. I'll tell you,

  902. Jesus did it.

  903. The same Jesus

  904. you crucified

  905. a few weeks ago.

  906. God raised him

  907. from the dead.

  908. And now,

  909. just like the psalm said,

  910. he's the capstone

  911. of God's people

  912. and there isn't salvation

  913. in anyone else.

  914. Ouch.

  915. Ouch.

  916. In other words,

  917. when asked about

  918. what was really going on,

  919. Peter

  920. made Jesus

  921. the hero

  922. because he is.

  923. Now,

  924. we don't always get the chance

  925. to be as forthright

  926. as Peter,

  927. do we?

  928. You know,

  929. sometimes our conversations

  930. are a little further upstream.

  931. But the same spirit

  932. that filled Peter

  933. in that moment

  934. to speak what he ought to say

  935. to testify to Christ

  936. also fills us.

  937. You know,

  938. Jesus promised in Luke chapter 12,

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  939. back in the gospel of Luke,

  940. the first chapter

  941. of Luke's two-part work.

  942. In Luke chapter 12,

    Luke 12:11–12

  943. verse 11 through 12,

  944. Jesus said,

  945. when they bring you

  946. before the rulers

  947. and authorities,

  948. the Holy Spirit

  949. will teach you

  950. what you ought to say.

  951. And here in Acts 4,

  952. we see that Jesus' promise

  953. is coming true.

  954. And that same promise

  955. is true for us.

  956. The Spirit helps us

  957. in our everyday moments

  958. with what we ought to say.

  959. He will help us

  960. to turn our conversation

  961. to the things of the gospel

  962. in a way that's fitting

  963. and natural to the moment.

  964. We might not get a chance

  965. to say everything

  966. that we want to say

  967. about Jesus

  968. or that we hope

  969. to say about Jesus,

  970. but we can still pray

  971. for the opportunities

  972. to draw people

  973. a little closer

  974. to the unique Savior

  975. who holds out

  976. this unique

  977. and beautiful salvation.

  978. So I think we learn

  979. from this text

  980. to be praying,

  981. to be depending

  982. on the Spirit,

  983. to turn the corner

  984. of our conversations

  985. to make Jesus known.

  986. Right?

  987. How many of you,

  988. when you, you know,

  989. run into friends

  990. or things like that,

  991. and you're like,

  992. oh, I was, you know,

  993. I was, what were you doing

  994. this weekend?

  995. Oh, I was at church.

  996. Oh, it's nice to have community,

  997. isn't it?

  998. Right?

  999. I hear that a lot, actually.

  1000. And it is nice

  1001. to have community.

  1002. Isn't it wonderful?

  1003. Yeah?

  1004. Yeah?

1005. Oh, what would the Holy Spirit

  1006. prompt us to say

  1007. in that moment?

  1008. You know,

  1009. community is great,

  1010. but I'll tell you,

1011. the one at the center

  1012. of our community

  1013. is even better.

  1014. I don't know.

  1015. The Holy Spirit

  1016. will lead you,

  1017. brothers and sisters.

  1018. Third and last,

1019. we should not only pray

  1020. for opportunities

  1021. to speak about Jesus.

  1022. If He is indeed

  1023. the only Savior,

  1024. then the most important

  1025. thing we can do

  1026. is spend time

  1027. with Jesus.

  1028. Notice the last paragraph

  1029. of our passage.

  1030. The rulers and authorities

  1031. are sort of surprised

  1032. at the boldness

  1033. of Peter and John.

  1034. They speak

  1035. not just with courage,

  1036. but that word there,

  1037. that word there,

  1038. courage or boldness

  1039. also means clarity

  1040. and insight

  1041. and freedom,

  1042. freedom of speech.

  1043. Right?

  1044. And the authorities

  1045. are surprised

  1046. at that courage,

  1047. at that boldness,

  1048. because Peter and John

  1049. are uneducated,

  1050. common men.

  1051. That is,

  1052. that is,

  1053. technically what that means

  1054. is that they hadn't

  1055. gone through

  1056. the formal rabbinical training

1057. that the religious authorities had.

  1058. They hadn't been schooled

  1059. in their schools.

  1060. They hadn't been trained

  1061. in their methods,

  1062. right?

  1063. They hadn't gotten

  1064. their certification.

  1065. Peter and John,

  1066. in other words,

  1067. were not religious professionals.

1068. They were just lay people.

  1069. And yet,

  1070. they spoke

  1071. with insight,

  1072. with conviction,

  1073. with courage.

  1074. How could that be?

  1075. What gave them

  1076. that boldness?

1077. Well, the rest of verse 13 reads,

  1078. and they recognized

  1079. that they had been

  1080. with Jesus.

  1081. They had been

  1082. with Jesus.

  1083. You see,

1084. Jesus also hadn't been trained

  1085. in the rabbinical schools

  1086. of the day.

  1087. He also hadn't gotten

  1088. their same credentials.

  1089. And yet,

  1090. no one taught

  1091. with the authority

  1092. and the clarity

  1093. and insight

  1094. that Jesus did.

  1095. In Jesus,

  1096. all the wisdom,

  1097. all the fullness

  1098. of wisdom and truth

  1099. and goodness dwelled.

  1100. In Jesus,

  1101. the very radiance

1102. of the glory of God

  1103. shone forth

  1104. in human form.

  1105. And Peter and John,

1106. that they hadn't been trained

  1107. in the schools,

  1108. had been with Jesus.

  1109. Now, friends,

  1110. of course,

  1111. there is great value

  1112. in learning,

  1113. in study,

  1114. in education.

1115. Most of you are here

  1116. in New Haven

  1117. to do just that.

1118. And these are good gifts,

  1119. and they're worth pursuing.

  1120. And Christianity

1121. has always been a learning

  1122. and teaching faith.

  1123. But, friends,

  1124. what matters most

1125. is if we have been

  1126. with Jesus.

1127. Jesus is the only Savior.

  1128. And if He is,

  1129. then the great pursuit

  1130. of our earthly lives

  1131. ought to be

  1132. to commune with Him

  1133. in prayer,

  1134. to learn of Him

  1135. in His Word,

  1136. and to worship Him

  1137. in fellowship

  1138. with His body,

  1139. the local church.

  1140. The passage ends

  1141. with the authorities

  1142. threatening Peter and John

  1143. to never speak

  1144. about Jesus again.

1145. And then they say this

  1146. in great courage,

  1147. whether it's right

1148. in the sight of God

  1149. to listen to you

  1150. rather than God,

  1151. you must judge,

1152. for we cannot but speak

1153. of what we have seen

  1154. and heard.

  1155. Wow!

  1156. Where did they get

  1157. the courage

  1158. to go on preaching

  1159. and to suffer

  1160. the consequences?

  1161. Friends,

  1162. it's because

  1163. they had been

  1164. with Jesus.

  1165. They had been

  1166. with Him,

1167. and they had to speak

1168. of what they had seen

  1169. and heard.

  1170. And that's where

  1171. our courage,

  1172. that's where our boldness

  1173. will come from too.

  1174. Brother, sister,

  1175. if you feel weak

  1176. or weary,

  1177. if you feel timid

  1178. or afraid,

  1179. spend time

  1180. with your Savior.

  1181. Be with Jesus.

  1182. Learn to worship

  1183. and love Him

  1184. in prayer.

  1185. Read and meditate

  1186. on His Word

  1187. until it starts

  1188. to warm your soul.

  1189. Spend time

  1190. with fellow believers

  1191. who can encourage you.

  1192. Spend time

  1193. with Jesus Himself.

1194. And may it be said

1195. of us as a church

  1196. as it was said

  1197. of Peter and John,

  1198. and they recognized

  1199. that they had been

  1200. with Jesus.

1201. And if that is true

  1202. of us,

  1203. then more and more

  1204. and more,

  1205. our message

  1206. and our life

  1207. together as a church,

  1208. it won't only be

  1209. disruptive

  1210. to the status quo,

  1211. right?

  1212. It won't just

  1213. maybe bring a riot

  1214. or two every once

  1215. in a while

  1216. instead of tea.

  1217. It won't just be

  1218. disruptive

  1219. to the status quo,

  1220. but our message

  1221. and our common life

  1222. will also be

  1223. transformative

  1224. and healing.

  1225. It won't be something

  1226. that simply tears down,

  1227. but something

  1228. that builds up.

  1229. Because

  1230. it will be

  1231. Jesus Himself

  1232. that we bring

  1233. to others.

  1234. And they recognized

  1235. that they had been

  1236. with Jesus.

  1237. May God grant it

1238. to be so with us,

  1239. friends.

  1240. Let's pray.

  1241. Lord,

  1242. we are so grateful

  1243. that You are indeed

  1244. a unique Savior,

  1245. that the great need

  1246. that we had

  1247. to be reconciled

  1248. to God

  1249. for this world

  1250. to be renewed

  1251. and healed.

  1252. You have come,

  1253. Lord Jesus,

  1254. and accomplished

  1255. all that was required.

  1256. So we worship

  1257. and we praise You.

  1258. May our witness

  1259. to You,

  1260. Lord Jesus,

  1261. in lip

  1262. and in life

  1263. be fueled

  1264. not by fear,

  1265. not by pride,

1266. but may it be fueled

  1267. by that rich communion

  1268. with You.

  1269. O Lord,

1270. help us even this week

  1271. to be with You,

  1272. to commune with You,

  1273. to walk with You,

  1274. to keep in step

  1275. with Your Spirit.

  1276. Lord,

  1277. I pray that You

  1278. would open

  1279. the eyes

  1280. of those

1281. who are far from You,

  1282. who are seeking You.

  1283. Help them

  1284. to see in Christ

  1285. the only Savior,

  1286. to trust in Him

  1287. and be saved.

  1288. Lord,

  1289. we pray this

  1290. in Jesus' mighty name.

  1291. Amen.

  1292. Amen.
