  1. We have been going through a series, a

  2. collection of talks all about the

  3. subject matter of God's will. And we

  4. called it I will. Yeah. AND THE REASON

  5. WE CALLED IT I will. YEAH. IS BECAUSE

  6. WHEN AN IRISH PERSON says I will. Yeah.

  7. They mean NO I WON'T. IT'S KIND OF LIKE

  8. WHEN YOU INVITE SOMEONE in the in the in

  9. the WhatsApp chat, hey, can you make it?

  10. Can will you RSVP? AND IT'S FUNNY IN

  11. EVERY OTHER COUNTRY in the world when an

  12. RSVP goes out, there's two answers, yes

  13. or no. BUT OF COURSE IN IRELAND WE HAVE

  14. TO HAVE A THIRD ANSWER WHICH IS MAYBE.

  15. BUT MAYBE JUST MEANS NO. IF AN IRISH

  16. PERSON SAYS, "YEAH, MAYBE I'LL COME."

  17. WHAT THEY MEAN IS I'm not coming. And so

  18. this tension we all face with like we

  19. know sometimes that something is good

  20. for us. Something is right for us.

  21. Something is best for us. But we have

  22. this struggle, this tension of like, but

  23. I don't really want to do it. And so a

  24. few weeks ago, we had a great Sunday

  25. here. Maybe you were here. Uh it was a

  26. wonderful event. So we baptized a whole

  27. bunch of people. I baptized my brother,

  28. baptized my oldest son, Joshua, who's

  29. serving in North Dublin location. Shout

  30. out to my boy. And it was a great

  31. Sunday. And we talked about this

  32. incredible invitation that Jesus gave

  33. 2,000 years ago to his first heroes

  34. heroes, forgive me, and gives to us

  35. today, which is found in Matthew's

  36. Gospel 11 28 where it says, "Come to me

  37. all of you who are weary and burdened

  38. and I will give you rest." I mean, it it

  39. just sounds so good. take my yoke upon

  40. you. Yoke was a a yoke was like a a

  41. farming implemented tool. It was like a

  42. wooden beam that was put across the

  43. shoulders of two animals that would drag

  44. equipment like a plow. And Jesus is

  45. saying when it comes to the weight and

  46. the burdens and the difficulties of

  47. life. Who you're tethered to, WHO YOU'RE

  48. TIED TO, WHAT YOU'RE CONNECTED TO, WHO

  49. you're serving and following makes

  50. difference. And the invitation is if you

  51. allow me under the weight of your

  52. burden, I will carry the bulk of the

  53. weight. learn from me. He says, I am

  54. gentle and humble in heart and you will

  55. find rest for your souls. And so part of

  56. this invitation is that we would come

  57. into the knowledge, the understanding

  58. and alignment with God's will for our

  59. lives. But of course, it goes back to

  60. the tension, God's will versus my will.

  61. In other words, what I want versus what

  62. he wills. And part of the issue is that

  63. we discussed over the last weeks is that

  64. sometimes we think what God wants for

  65. us, what he wills for us is not what we

  66. want. We think that God wants to steal

  67. our fun and God wants to make life

  68. boring and God wants to put our

  69. perspective into black and white and

  70. that we should all be Ned Flanders type

  71. oy doily happy clappy Christians and AND

  72. THERE'S NO CRACK IN GOD BUT the truth is

  73. God is a good father and he doesn't want

  74. anything from us for what could we give

  75. him but he wants everything for us and I

  76. submit to you the best most rewarding

  77. most impactful most fulfilling most

  78. meaningful way to live your life on

  79. earth is to live your life of the love

  80. of God for the love of God helping other

  81. people to experience God's love. The

  82. challenge is sometimes what we do is we

  83. tend to overspiritualize God's will. We

  84. think I got to go up a mountain and and

  85. dance around a fire to try figure out

  86. God's will for our life is or we

  87. overanalyze it like what if this AND

  88. WHAT IF THAT WHAT IF THAT doesn't work.

  89. We try to manipulate God's will to suit

  90. what we want. But in every case, we

  91. always underestimate

  92. God's goodness, his strength, and his

  93. ability to get us where we need to go.

  94. So the question has been, so how do I

  95. understand God's will for my life? And

  96. so in week one, I give you a breakdown

  97. of the kind of four aspects, the four

  98. theological aspects of God's will is

  99. number one, his reigning will, which uh

  100. theologians often call his sovereign

  101. will. the idea that God is just in

  102. charge. LIKE IF GOD is real, perhaps

  103. you're not a believer, not a Christ

  104. farer or skeptic, and we're so glad

  105. you're here. That was my story. And

  106. perhaps you're thinking as I did, you

  107. know, there is no God. But just imagine

  108. if there is a supreme being, a creator

  109. of the universe, then by definition,

  110. that being has a sovereign will. And

  111. what that means is is whether we like it

  112. or not, whether we vote against it or

  113. not, whether we chose to close the

  114. curtains and ignore the weather or not,

  115. God's will will ultimately prevail. when

  116. he says in his word that there will be a

  117. day where every knee will bow AND EVERY

  118. TONGUE SHALL confess that Jesus Christ

  119. is Lord that will happen. What are we

  120. looking at? Because that is God's

  121. running will. There's also God's

  122. revealed will which theologians call his

  123. moral will which he shows us in his word

  124. how we ought to live. Like what's what's

  125. the best if he's invented life and he

  126. has an overall plan for how we should

  127. live life? How do we discern or

  128. ascertain what that is? and he reveals

  129. to us in his word. Then there's God's

  130. permissive will, which is very confusing

  131. because it's like God has a sovereign

  132. will and God has a revealed will. But

  133. God also gives us this incredible gift

  134. called free will, which means living

  135. under his will is our will. And we get

  136. to make choices. And our choices always

  137. lead to consequences. And usually when

  138. I'm talking to people who uh don't

  139. believe in God or think they can't

  140. believe in God, one of the reasons

  141. they'll push back is say, "Pastor Jamie,

  142. if God is so good and God is so kind and

  143. God is so benevolent, then why is there

  144. so much bad things happening in the

  145. world?" In fact, today we're going to

  146. talk about the end children in poverty.

  147. Why? If God was so good, then why would

  148. children live in poverty? THE ANSWER IS

  149. GOD HAS GIVEN US AS human beings all the

  150. resources we need in the world. THERE

  151. ARE ENOUGH BIG MACS AND DOUBLE quarter

  152. pounders to feed the whole world. The

  153. problem is some of us ARE EATING THREE

  154. AND four and some of us get none. So God

  155. gives us the resource, but people choose

  156. to make selfish and sinful and hurting

  157. choices that then have consequences that

  158. affect other people. And so the

  159. challenge is what way do you want it? Do

  160. you want a God who gives us no choice,

  161. no free will, who controls us and makes

  162. the world a perfect utopia? Or do you

  163. want a God that affords us the

  164. opportunity to make choices, to live the

  165. consequences, BUT ACTUALLY SO LOVES US,

  166. is involved in our mess, and redeems our

  167. brokenness, and somehow turns around for

  168. his glory. And lastly, of course, this

  169. is one we all want to hear. What's God's

  170. personal will for me? And so, we learned

  171. last week then in part two that your

  172. heavenly father, we're so obsessed when

  173. it comes to God's will, God's personal

  174. for me. What should I do? What should I

  175. do next? Where should I go? Up, down,

  176. left, right? Shake it all around, do the

  177. hokeyp pokey. AND IT'S LIKE, WHAT SHOULD

  178. WE DO? AND THE ANSWER IN PART IS, WELL,

  179. ACTUALLY, what you do is important, but

  180. what's more important is your heavenly

  181. father is more concerned with your who

  182. than your do. Who you are becoming is

  183. more important than what you are doing.

  184. And oftentimes we tend to over

  185. complicate God's will for our lives and

  186. underestimate his goodness. The best way

  187. to guarantee God's will for tomorrow is

  188. to live in God's will for your life

  189. today. Like I said last week, I

  190. summarized in 1 Corinthians 10:31 the

    1 Corinthians 10:31

  191. Apostle PAUL SAYS, "WHATEVER YOU DO, whe

  192. it's study, whether it's work, whether

  193. it's marry, where it's remain single,

  194. whether it's travel, whether it's stay,

  195. whoever you support, WHATEVER YOU WEAR,

  196. WHATEVER YOU DO WHEN IT COMES TO God's

  197. will, do it all for the glory of God.

  198. That is the first step to discovering

  199. what God's personal will is for my

  200. child." Today in part three, we're

  201. building on this. And I know that when

  202. it comes to trying to figure out, okay,

  203. I'll do it for God's glory, but still I

  204. need something. I need help. I need

  205. confirmation. I need someone to TELL ME

  206. I NEED A SIGN. RIGHT? Often times like,

  207. Lord, if you just show me a sign. I

  208. remember one time when I was like 14

  209. years old, didn't believe in God and was

  210. in a very rough, broken place. And I

  211. loved rock and roll music in my bedroom.

  212. my posters to all these different

  213. artists on my ceiling was like a a 4

  214. foot poster of the lead singer of a band

  215. called Nirvana. His name was Kurt

  216. Cobain. And the quote on THE POSTER THAT

  217. EVERY SINGLE NIGHT I WILL FALL ASLEEP to

  218. was this quote, "I hate myself and want

  219. to die." And of course, you know the

  220. story Kirk Cobain blew his brains out in

  221. 1984. He did. He he fulfilled his own

  222. prophecy. AND SO EVERY NIGHT IN my own

  223. brokenness and loss, I would wonder even

  224. if there was someone out there good,

  225. would they? Why would they? And I

  226. remember saying, GOD, IF YOU'RE OUT

  227. there and if you're real, YOU KNOW, SHOW

  228. ME, SHOW, DO SOMETHING LIKE, YOU KNOW,

  229. MAKE THE walls shake, you know, MAKE THE

  230. WINDOWS LIKE SEND AN ANGEL. You don't

  231. really want an angel after becoming a

  232. Christian, read the Bible, and realize

  233. you don't want an angel. Angels are

  234. terrifying figures. Imagine your

  235. mother-in-law in the morning. It's just

  236. a terrifying uh thing. And so, and so I

  237. remember praying AND AND SO OFTEN we we

  238. do this game of like, Lord, you know,

  239. SHOULD I DO MY HOMEWORK, GOD? WELL, if

  240. the bunny jumps over the crow and the

  241. crow then flies back to the horse, I'll

  242. take it as a sign that you really want

  243. me to do my homework. IT'S LIKE, SHOULD

  244. I GET UP OUT OF BED TODAY? WELL, you

  245. know what? If the alarm I didn't set

  246. goes off, I'll take AS A SIGN. WE PLAY

  247. THESE GAMES AND THE PROBLEM IS is they

  248. are games. That's why we don't tend to

  249. get a good result from our

  250. experimentation. We need a sign, but do

  251. we? As I was thinking about this, I was

  252. thinking about the story of the Apostle

  253. Paul. The Apostle Paul is an intriguing

  254. character. But why? Because number one,

  255. he was just a regular dude like all of

  256. us regular person. He's just an ordinary

  257. person. And the Apostle Paul wasn't like

  258. raised in church and pro-church and

  259. indoctrinating church. In case you're

  260. thinking like, "Oh, here comes another

  261. religious fanatic." No, Paul actually

  262. didn't like church. He was one of you

  263. who don't like church. One of like I

  264. was. He was anti-urch, anti-Christian.

  265. In fact, HIS FULL-TIME JOB AT ONE point

  266. was to find the church wherever it

  267. existed AND TO TRY TO SHUT IT DOWN.

  268. That's who he was until he had a

  269. personal encounter with the presence of

  270. Jesus that changed his life just like my

  271. just like most of us. And then Paul

  272. dedicated his life to serving God's will

  273. for his life. And you think about his

  274. story. I mean what he went through. I

  275. mean he authored most of New Testament

  276. stories, the pain, the turmoil, the

  277. sacrifice. As many historians believe he

  278. was ultimately uh martyed for his faith

  279. which is you know crazy. How can you go

  280. from like not like not just not liking

  281. but hating Jesus to one day being

  282. willing to die for Jesus? That can only

  283. happen if Jesus actually lives and still

  284. changes lives. And you know we would

  285. think Apostle Paul is like one of the

  286. most super spiritual characters in the

  287. New Testament. And yet, when it comes to

  288. the Apostle Paul's journey and his life,

  289. what's so amazing to me is that when it

  290. came to his, you know, discerning,

  291. ascertaining, choosing, deciding what

  292. God's will look like for his personal

  293. life, it wasn't always as super

  294. spiritual as we think it was. For

  295. example, let me show you today four ways

  296. that I see God's will at work in the

  297. Apostle Paul's life. This is going to

  298. really hopefully encourage you, but also

  299. challenge you. Number one, the first way

  300. God's will worked in the Apostle Paul's

  301. life was through open doors. Number two,

  302. the second way God's will worked apostle

  303. Paul's life is through closed doors.

  304. Hey, the third way the will of God

  305. worked the Apostle Paul's life is

  306. through frustrated plans. Come on,

  307. somebody. And lastly, and very

  308. interestingly, and we'll finish this,

  309. the fourth way God's will worked the

  310. Apostle Paul's life was through everyday

  311. choices. Let's jump in. Number one,

  312. God's will through open doors. In the

  313. first letter the Apostle Paul wrote to

  314. the church in Corinth, which is modern

  315. day Greece, chapter 16 verse 89, here's

  316. what he says. He says, "But we will stay

  317. on at Ephesus." Ephesus was a city in

  318. modern day Turkey, where a letter to

  319. Ephesians was written. And he's writing

  320. from Ephesus to Corenth. And he says,

  321. "We're going to stay here until the day

  322. of Pentecost, which is a holiday, which

  323. in terms of our calendar usually happens

  324. around May. uh because watch THIS NOT

  325. BECAUSE AN ANGEL told me not because I

  326. had a dream not be but because a great

  327. door for effective work has opened to me

  328. and I'll come to this a second there are

  329. many who oppose me notice this as the

  330. apostle Paul tries to discern what is

  331. God's will for life there was no vision

  332. there was no dream there was no angel

  333. there was just opportunity opportunity

  334. and sometimes

  335. God's will is simple as an opportunity

  336. comes your way and you run into the

  337. filter of like is it good for God? Is it

  338. good for me? Is it good for those I

  339. love? Is it inherently selfish? Or

  340. really is it for because the apostle say

  341. a great ministry a great door of

  342. ministry opened for me. And again I

  343. understand this because that's my story.

  344. In the year 2008, my wife, myself, at

  345. that point, our nine-month-old son

  346. Joshua, we were living in my hometown of

  347. Carlo, County Carlo. If you ever want to

  348. find out where Carlo is in Google Maps,

  349. just Google center of the world. That

  350. pin will drop. Boom. Right in my

  351. hometown. And uh we were we were just

  352. living life, you know, married a couple

  353. of years, had a son, you working a job,

  354. she was working a job, trying to get

  355. through stuff, really involved in local

  356. church, doing everything. And this

  357. opportunity came. Someone tapped us on

  358. the shoulder, a kind of a a spiritual

  359. leader, a mentor, and said, "Would you

  360. guys be willing to quit your jobs,

  361. uproot your lives, and move to Naven

  362. County Me?" Now, JUST FOR THE RECORD, I

  363. HAD NEVER BEEN in Navan County Me in my

  364. life. And because of a traditional rugby

  365. rivalry, I didn't like Navin County Me

  366. at this point in my life. I love it very

  367. much now. And uh and so we were like

  368. this is so crazy and we prayed and we

  369. felt like yeah this is a God

  370. opportunity. So the reason why we came

  371. and this church began and we're all here

  372. today almost 20 years later is that

  373. because of a vision or a dream or an

  374. angel because someone said would you be

  375. willing for the glory of God to go to

  376. this place and start something that

  377. would help those who are far from God

  378. find and follow Jesus. and we had no

  379. answers and we had no guarantees. Just a

  380. confirmation in our spirit this was of

  381. God. Now, here's the thing. That's a

  382. cool thing to know. But does that mean

  383. the last 20 years have been easy and

  384. smooth for us? Look at my face. Do I

  385. look like a person who's had an easy and

  386. smooth 20 years? Life has beating me up.

  387. I'm only 25 years old. No, I'm joking.

  388. Um, it's like it's like it's BEEN HARD.

  389. WHY? BECAUSE AN OPEN door does not

  390. guarantee a smooth journey.

  391. Just because a door is open and God

  392. wants to enter in doesn't mean it's

  393. going to be easy. By definition, usually

  394. if we're doing a good, godly, and

  395. meaningful thing, good, godly, beautiful

  396. things usually bring a degree of

  397. difficulty. In part because the price of

  398. doing anything in life that's worthy or

  399. meaningful or impactful is hard. But

  400. also because when we're doing it for

  401. God, we should expect spiritual push

  402. back.

  403. Because there is an enemy to this great

  404. work and there is an enemy of your soul

  405. and there is an enemy to God's will

  406. being fulfilled in your life. Listen up

  407. now Nav in the dog. There is an enemy

  408. and the enemy does not waste his time

  409. attacking people who are of no threat to

  410. him. So here's a great little like

  411. selfch check moment. IF YOU HAVE NOT

  412. BEEN UNDER SPIRITUAL ATTACK maybe you're

  413. doing nothing.

  414. That's for free. And maybe if YOU'RE

  415. LIKE MAN I JUST CAN'T SHAKE IT.

  416. EVERYWHERE I GO, I'M GETTING ATTACKED.

  417. MAYBE YOU'RE ON TRACK TO do something

  418. that's going to bring great benefit to

  419. our community, to our country, to our

  420. nation, but also most importantly to the

  421. kingdom of God. Opposition

  422. usually leads to opportunity, forgive

  423. me, usually leads to opposition. And in

  424. fact, what I have found, the greater the

  425. opportunity, the greater the opposition.

  426. And we shouldn't become discouraged and

  427. think, man, I chose to come here 20

  428. years ago and this has been so hard.

  429. Maybe I chose the wrong thing. NO, LET'S

  430. FLIP THAT. MAYBE proof you're doing the

  431. wrong thing is that you're facing

  432. spiritual opposition. So God's will was

  433. revealed to the Apostle Paul doors.

  434. God's will was also made evident through

  435. closed doors. This is a really

  436. interesting one, right? Not just through

  437. open doors, but also closed doors. in

  438. Acts chapter 16. This is the book of

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  439. Acts written by the historian Luke. Luke

  440. was not a follower of Jesus but came to

  441. know Jesus and follow him after the

  442. resurrection. And he was a trained

  443. historian. And he wrote the Gospel of

  444. Luke and he wrote the book of Acts as a

  445. two-part compendium capturing the story

  446. of the life of Jesus and the birth of

  447. the church. And in Acts 16, here's what

  448. Luke says. He says, "Next, Paul and

  449. Silas traveled through the area of

  450. Friia. That's where fridges come from.

  451. Not really. Uh and Galatia." Actually,

  452. no, I'm joking. UH BECAUSE WATCH THIS.

  453. THE HOLY SPIRIT had prevented them from

  454. what? FROM GOING on the roller coaster,

  455. from a long weekend, FROM SKYDIVING.

  456. THE HOLY SPIRIT PREVENTED them from

  457. preaching the word. This is so important

  458. in the province of Asia at that say with

  459. me time. Then coming to the borders of

  460. Misia, they headed north to the province

  461. of Bethna. But again, the spirit of

  462. Jesus did not allow them to go there.

  463. This is so interesting because look at

  464. the motives of Paul. They wanted to go

  465. to this place to tell people the good

  466. news of Jesus. And the spirit of God

  467. said no. That makes no sense, does it?

  468. Why would God say no to a right thing in

  469. a right place? I'll tell you why.

  470. Because it was the wrong time.

  471. What should we do in our lives when we

  472. think we're doing the right thing? We're

  473. trying to do the wrong the right thing

  474. and God says

  475. no.

  476. That's a difficult one. We have to

  477. understand that when God says no, no as

  478. in not here, no as in not now, not this,

  479. not with him or her or them, not this

  480. way or that way, isn't just a no. God

  481. saying no, here, now, this, him, her,

  482. them, this way, that way is still God

  483. directing us. The other day I was at a

  484. hotel and I turned the corner, walk into

  485. the hotel. The hotel has three doors and

  486. the doors near to me DIDN'T OPEN. SO, I

  487. STOOD IN front of the door

  488. and I looked right, I looked left and up

  489. and looked down and looked through and

  490. looked in. I saw the guy in the

  491. reception. He's like, "The other door?"

  492. I'm like, "Why do you have a stupid

  493. door? It doesn't open. What purpose is

  494. it solved?" if you serve, you know, and

  495. so I had to go around and a door opened.

  496. IT WASN'T LIKE YOU CAN'T COME IN. It was

  497. like there's another way. It's not this

  498. way and it's not now. Your heavenly

  499. father loves you so much, is so

  500. interested, and so involved in your life

  501. that sometimes he will close the wrong

  502. door to help you go the right way. And

  503. again, we notice as parents, if you're a

  504. parent or a good parent, you know that

  505. you don't say no to your KIDS BECAUSE

  506. YOU ENJOY THEIR MISERY. NO, CHILD.

  507. OH, DADDY, why are you so tough?

  508. GOOD PARENTS SAY NO BECAUSE YOU'RE LIKE,

  509. YOU'RE AN IDIOT. CUZ YOU'RE IMMATURE AND

  510. LACK EXPERIENCE. AND IF I SAY YES, NOT

  511. ONLY WILL YOU RUIN YOUR LIFE, BUT THAT

  512. BY DEFINITION MAKES ME A VERY WEAK, POOR

  513. PARENT. GOOD PARENT. NO ONE IS SAYING NO

  514. TO THEIR KIDS.

  515. IN FACT, ONE OF THE REASONS our culture

  516. is crazy RIGHT NOW IS ENOUGH. GOOD

  517. PARENTS, DON'T SAY NO ENOUGH. BUT NO

  518. DOESN'T MEAN NOT EVER. No may mean not

  519. this, not him, not her, not now.

  520. Sometimes we feel like when we get a no

  521. from our earthly parents or our heavenly

  522. father, it's like, why is God rejecting

  523. me? Maybe God's no isn't rejection.

  524. Maybe God's no is protection.

  525. Maybe God actually knows. HE SAYS NO

  526. BECAUSE HE KNOWS and he knows WHAT WE

  527. DON'T KNOW YET. AND SO HE'S HELPING us

  528. and leading us and actually answering

  529. the prayer that we pray. God help us.

  530. Maybe God's no now if we're willing to

  531. trust it will lead to a better yes

  532. later. And again I have so many examples

  533. this for you. Give you a couple quick

  534. ones. I'll give you one story. When we

  535. first decided from Naven that we're

  536. going to plant a church, we had picked

  537. three places. And you know what? What

  538. was not on our radar at all? This place.

  539. WE DID NOT PICK THIS PLACE. WE WERE

  540. LIKE, "WE'RE GOING TO GO TO THIS PLACE

  541. OR THAT PLACE." IT WAS NEVER EVEN MY

  542. RADAR. AND THEN THE HOLY SPIRIT SPOKE,

  543. SAID, "NO." I'm like, "Well, if this

  544. door is closed, that door's closed.

  545. Like, where should we go?" And actually,

  546. it was through a series of really crazy

  547. events where one guy had a dream,

  548. another person had a vision. I end up

  549. coming down here just to pray and it was

  550. like, man, we sense that God has called

  551. us to launch a new lifegiving lighthouse

  552. church in West Dson area. Crazy, right?

  553. Then we said, "Okay, we're going to go

  554. again and plant our third church." And

  555. we chose this place and that place,

  556. ANOTHER PLACE, AND AGAIN GOD SAID NO.

  557. AND WE'RE LIKE, "OKAY, LORD. WELL, IF

  558. YOU WANT TO SAY NO AGAIN, where should

  559. we go?" We felt GOD LEAD US TO DONE

  560. DOCK. THAT'S WHY WE'RE IN THE DOCK. SO,

  561. YOU'D THINK BY TIME FOUR, we know we

  562. could have learned the thing, right?

  563. wrong. We prayed AND GOD SAID NO. SO we

  564. said okay let's go to swords and no one

  565. opened the door and literally no one

  566. opened the door for us in swords. AND SO

  567. WE LAUNCHED A CHURCH called I church

  568. swords in sandry

  569. because God said no. Now we know that

  570. God wants to be exactly where we are.

  571. Come on North Dublin. But it was through

  572. a lot of nos. I remember when I had to

  573. make a decision. So like I told you I

  574. was tapped on the shoulder. would you

  575. consider quitting your jobs and moving

  576. up to Navan? At the exact same time, the

  577. strangest thing happened to me in my

  578. company I worked for. I worked in in

  579. sales uh and I was on worked in a shop

  580. as a manager and the owner of the

  581. company took a look into me and said,

  582. you know, I want to fast track you into

  583. corporate office. Here's a job going

  584. like you need like three years

  585. experience. Uh I needed an undergraduate

  586. degree in marketing and so on so forth.

  587. Like I had none of the qualifications,

  588. but he really liked me. My work ethic,

  589. my my character, because everything I

  590. was doing for the glory of God, I was

  591. selling shoes for the glory of God.

  592. THERE ARE SO MANY NIKE AIR MAXES OUT IN

  593. THE MARKET BECAUSE I was doing it for

  594. the glory of God and so hard work and so

  595. on. So he he said, "I want I want to

  596. fast track you into A CORPOR I MEAN, I'M

  597. 20 YEARS OLD. I'm going to be working in

  598. in a in the corporate sector." You know

  599. what I'm saying? I'm going to earn some

  600. real money, drive a nice car. THIS IS

  601. LIKE EVERYBODY'S DREAM, RIGHT? AND I

  602. remember praying saying, "God, you know,

  603. this is going to do good for us, Lord.

  604. You and me together. I'm going to go

  605. work there for the glory of God. I'm

  606. going to earn a whole bunch of money for

  607. the glory God. Don't worry, Lord. You

  608. know my heart. I I will honor you. I'll

  609. go to church." And as I was praying, I

  610. felt the Lord say, "No, the path you

  611. should take is you should move to Navant

  612. and earn no money and live in misery for

  613. next 20 years of life." Not all, not the

  614. whole 20. At least one and a half years

  615. were good.

  616. And I couldn't figure out why. But now I

  617. look back and see, man, God is so

  618. faithful. Would you believe that one

  619. year after? Because I we moved to Navan

  620. in May 2008. Anyone know what great

  621. global catastrophe happened May 2008,

  622. the recession, would you believe that

  623. company that I almost sold out my

  624. calling for was sold in bankruptcy for

  625. one euro one year later. I mean, what

  626. mess would I have got myself, my new

  627. wife, and my son had had I tried to

  628. manufacture my own destiny? and

  629. manipulate God's will for my life.

  630. Closed door is sometimes for our good.

  631. Number three, God's will can also be

  632. made clear to us THROUGH FRUSTRATED

  633. PLANS. COME ON, SOMEBODY. WHO LOVES

  634. FRUSTRATED PLANS? They're my favorite,

  635. as you can tell. It's so important. Paul

  636. shows us something really important

  637. about times of frustration. Maybe you're

  638. in a time of frustration right now

  639. wondering, do I go left? Do I go right?

  640. DO I SAY YES? DO I SAY NO? DO I INVEST?

  641. DO I HOLD BACK? DO I LAUNCH? Do I sit?

  642. Do I move? DO I STAY? DO I ACCEPT THE

  643. JOB OFFER? DO I DECLINE THE JOB OFFER?

  644. LIKE WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY LIFE?

  645. PAUL DOESN'T ACTUALLY TELL US WHAT WE

  646. SHOULD DO OUR LIFE, BUT HE SHOWS US HOW

  647. WE should live our life in the interim.

  648. Watch this. When Paul was going through

  649. incredible times of frustration, number

  650. one, when he was not certain.

  651. Number two, he was not nervous. This is

  652. so important when we live in a day and

  653. age that's characterized by such

  654. overwhelming anxiety. The Apostle Paul

  655. figured out that when I don't have

  656. answers, when things aren't clear, when

  657. I don't have certainty, I don't have to

  658. freak out and lose my beep and be

  659. nervous.

  660. Look at me in 1 Corinthians 16:5 says

    1 Corinthians 16:5

  661. this. It says, "After I go through

  662. Macedonia, which is an area which was

  663. north of uh of modern day Greece, I will

  664. come to you probably going through

  665. Macedonia. Perhaps I will stay with you

  666. for a while or even spend the winter so

  667. you can help me on my journey wherever I

  668. go. For I do not want to for I do not

  669. want to see you now. For I do not want

  670. you know and make only a passing visit.

  671. I hope to spend some time with you if

  672. the Lord

  673. permits.

  674. The apostle Paul is like saying this

  675. makes logistical sense.

  676. THIS MAKES PRACTICAL SENSE. THIS MAKES

  677. common sense. But he inserts with great

  678. humility the word perhaps.

  679. Perhaps I'm hoping I'm desiring

  680. reason at the right time. But ultimately

  681. everything I do is submitted to if the

  682. Lord that's why because this is the same

  683. person in his second letter to the

  684. Corinthians who would say for we as

  685. Jesus followers are a people who walk by

  686. faith and not by sight. Sometimes it's

  687. rational, sometimes it's logical,

  688. sometimes it's practical, sometimes it's

  689. common sensical, but it doesn't mean

  690. that is always the will of God. And it's

  691. really hard, especially for Christ, to

  692. stay still in a season of frustration.

  693. We can see that if I if I just help if I

  694. just help the Lord, we we can get out of

  695. this mess together. Do you know that's

  696. the worst thing you can do when you put

  697. your hands on that thing, it's going to

  698. be a disaster. If you're in a season of

  699. frustration, here's the pray your

  700. prayer. Not God, show me how to get out

  701. of this, but God, show me what you're

  702. trying to get out of me in this. What?

  703. Because if God's allowed you to go

  704. through a season, he's a good, loving,

  705. benevolent God. It's because he's trying

  706. to develop something in you that is

  707. crucial for your future.

  708. Paul didn't need absolute certainty to

  709. live in absolute trust. This is so

  710. important. I remember when in 2006 I was

  711. trying to figure out uh what I was going

  712. to do in my life. I had just finished my

  713. leavingert. I just gotten married. Yes,

  714. that's right. I got married the August

  715. that I did my leavingert. Whole

  716. different story. And um I had this

  717. wrestling in my soul that maybe I was

  718. called to help people in Ireland find

  719. and follow Jesus. There weren't churches

  720. like this at the time. There weren't

  721. very many many models or place to go. I

  722. had this this this ache in my soul.

  723. Somebody needs to stand up and tell our

  724. people that Jesus lives. Jesus loves and

  725. Jesus still liberates people. Like he is

  726. the real living God and can transform

  727. lives. Like that's worth celebrating.

  728. Come on. And so I found a guy who was

  729. doing something like that. And so I

  730. said, "Can I come and just shadow you

  731. for a couple weeks and see what you do

  732. because I'm trying to forget my life or

  733. go to university and make my own future

  734. or follow this crazy thought that I have

  735. of serving God." So I went with him and

  736. spend some time. And he was doing some

  737. work in a place called Longford. Now the

  738. reason I show you a map is because

  739. somebody like what's a Longford? It's

  740. not a thing. It's a place and it's right

  741. in the heart of Ireland. Okay. And he

  742. was just and he basically turned to one

  743. day and said, "Hey, would you consider

  744. moving from car at that time with your

  745. wife?" No kid yet. And help me to launch

  746. a church in Langford. You could be like

  747. my youth guy. Now, I never heard of

  748. launching a church because the last time

  749. I checked, the last church built in my

  750. town was 1824.

  751. Hello. No one launches churches, right?

  752. She's like, "What are we building? A

  753. steeple?" No, no, no. on a building, a

  754. community. Wow. And it was so weird

  755. because it seemed like it was the right

  756. thing. Like one day maybe I was called

  757. to launch a church. Was I right or

  758. wrong? Right. It seems like the right

  759. place as in Ireland needs new kinds of

  760. churches. Right. Was I right? Yes. SO

  761. IT'S LIKE I SHOULD DO THIS. I'M GOING TO

  762. IT INVOLVES UPROOTING MY FAMILY AND

  763. MOVING. RIGHT. RIGHT. OKAY. SO

  764. EVERYTHING SEEMED TO WORK except I

  765. didn't have peace.

  766. because it wasn't God's time and I was

  767. frustrated. I'm wondering why. But I

  768. made a decision. I can either wallow in

  769. my lack of certainty and allow anxiety

  770. to get the better of me or I can trust

  771. God in the gap and say, "Lord, whatever

  772. your will is, whether it's here or

  773. there, now or then, whatever I do now, I

  774. do for your glory." The problem is

  775. sometimes like this map, we want the

  776. whole map of our lives. We want the full

  777. picture. Let me tell you something. If

  778. God actually showed you the full map of

  779. your life, you would be terrified

  780. because like a hero's journey in a

  781. movie, you would see all the dungeons

  782. and dragons and castles and mountains

  783. and enemies. But what you won't be able

  784. to compute or or comprehend is the

  785. faithfulness of God in those seasons.

  786. Now, with retros back, you go, "Wow,

  787. look what all that God has done in my

  788. life. It's amazing. It's called a

  789. testimony." AND WE LAUGH ABOUT OUR PAIN,

  790. WHICH IS KIND OF CRAZY, but we want a

  791. whole map. We pray, "God, show me if you

  792. just give me confirmation. IF YOU JUST

  793. GIVE ME CERTAINTY, IF you'll just show

  794. me the steps." And God's like, "No, no,

  795. no. I'm not going to give you the whole

  796. map, but I will give you what you need

  797. to take your next step." Which is why we

  798. have a whole team in our church called

  799. the Next Steps team because we are so

  800. passionate about helping people on their

  801. journey with God, with his will to take

  802. their next step towards Jesus. In fact,

  803. a famous verse found in the book of

  804. Psalms 119 and verse 10 115 should be

  805. there's a typo here. It says, "Your word

  806. is a lamp for my feet." Ever been out at

  807. night walking through a forest with a

  808. torch? I love camping and so you you're

  809. in the middle of nowhere and there's no

  810. like uh light pollution, just total

  811. darkness and you're let's say it's 3

  812. o'clock in the morning, I need to use

  813. the restroom and there is no restroom

  814. because you're in a forest at 3 o'clock

  815. in the morning. You realize this lamp

  816. doesn't make the night turn day. IT

  817. DIDN'T EVEN SHOW ME THE FOREST. IT WILL

  818. EVEN illuminate the next 100 meters. It

  819. just gives me enough for my next step. I

  820. want you to go to the bathroom and thank

  821. God you can see your next step. You'll

  822. take it. Trust me, the alternative much

  823. is much worse because you might step

  824. into something anyway because someone

  825. else been to the bathroom. Stop. Um the

  826. same is true in our lives. God gives us

  827. through his person and through his word,

  828. through his presence enough to take the

  829. next step. So in your time of

  830. frustration, here's the advice. Trust

  831. God for our next step. Number four, and

  832. finally, God's will works through our

  833. life in everyday choices. THIS IS SO

  834. INTERESTING. GOD DOESN'T always give you

  835. a sign, a dream, a vision, an angel, an

  836. apparition.

  837. But sometimes God just gives you a

  838. choice.

  839. A choice. I think this is so powerful.

  840. It's like, should I go left if you want?

  841. So I go right if you want. It's like God

  842. somehow knows our motive and can see

  843. that his plan will still be fulfilled

  844. whether it's left or right sometimes. We

  845. see this time and time again in the life

  846. of the apostle Paul in Titus 3:12. He

    Titus 3:12

  847. said this. He said I have decided to

  848. stay there for the winter. Like I God

  849. didn't speak to me. It's not some like

  850. result. I just made a choice to stay

  851. here for the winter. And here by the way

  852. was in the Mediterranean. I believe it's

  853. everyone's God's will for all of us that

  854. we should spend the winter in the

  855. Mediterranean. Amen. Come on, somebody.

  856. He also said 1 Thessalonians 3:1, when

    1 Thessalonians 3:1

  857. we could stand it no longer, speaking of

  858. Athens, we decided to stay. Again,

  859. there's no angel apparition vision.

  860. These are decisions, choices the Apostle

  861. Paul is making in real time. In the book

  862. of Acts 15:36, he said, he said to

    Acts 15:36

  863. Barnabas, "LET'S GO BACK AGAIN." WHEN

  864. THE first when Paul and Barnabas first

  865. went out on their journey, it was a

  866. result of there was a vision, there was

  867. a prophecy, there was divine

  868. instruction. But the second time it was

  869. like, you know what, maybe we should go

  870. back and see those people. Like maybe

  871. maybe it's good for us to go and see how

  872. they're doing. This is so important.

  873. Why? Watch this. Sometimes God's

  874. reigning will

  875. because we are walking in his revealed

  876. will is his permissive will working as

  877. his personal will to give us

  878. freedom to choose. Watch again.

  879. Sometimes God's reigning pervasive

  880. all-encompassing will because we are

  881. walking we are holy. We're we're serving

  882. him. We're we're we're living according

  883. to his reveal will is allowing us

  884. according to his permissive will to

  885. personally make a choice. We have

  886. freedom to choose. They go, man, really

  887. I mean, how is it helpful? We're back to

  888. where we started. What should I do? Not

  889. what should you do. Who are you becoming

  890. in your doing? Well, should I go left or

  891. right, up or down? So, well, whatever it

  892. is, here's what the Apostle Paul does

  893. say in 1 Corinthians 10:31. Whatever you

    1 Corinthians 10:31

  894. do, do it all for the glory of God. And

  895. sometimes we're waiting for this like

  896. divine angelic confirmation. And God's

  897. like, I've already given you my word.

  898. I've already put you in a church

  899. community with good people who will

  900. speak life into you. I've put leaders

  901. around you who have wisdom and represent

  902. my heart as pastors. I want nothing from

  903. you, but the very best for you. I've

  904. given you so many resources, including

  905. your own intellect. I've given you

  906. faculties. I've given you wisdom. I

  907. given you know. I've given you all these

  908. things. And so I give you freedom to

  909. make the best choice.

  910. It's kind of hard because we're looking

  911. for, you know, divine confirmation. A

  912. choice we're going to give you today is

  913. today of course is compassion Sunday.

  914. And compassion Sunday is a Sunday that

  915. we take every single year to talk about

  916. poverty because poverty is close to the

  917. heart of Jesus. Because people are close

  918. to the heart of Jesus. And when I was

  919. praying about man, what should our role

  920. be as a church in trying to solve global

  921. problem? I mean, how do we even do this

  922. solve? It's so big, so massive. Yet, we

  923. have responsibility as God's people in

  924. Lighthouse Church in Ireland to do

  925. something to help relieve people from

  926. poverty. I remember God said, "Hey, do

  927. it for the least of these words of

  928. Jesus." Well, who at least? Well, if

  929. there's people who are poor, that's

  930. terrible. But perhaps the most

  931. vulnerable and the and the least of

  932. these in poverty are children. Children

  933. in poverty and more than just feeding

  934. for a day, which we do, we want to love

  935. them with the grace of God and break the

  936. cycle of poverty spiritually and

  937. economically over their lives so they

  938. can be set up to live their

  939. extraordinary purpose. And so we partner

  940. with a great organization we're talk a

  941. second called Compassion who help

  942. release people, children specifically

  943. from poverty in Jesus name. Well, what

  944. should we do? Well, you can sponsor a

  945. child or not sponsor a child. What do I

  946. believe? I believe that if you can s

  947. change someone's economic and spiritual

  948. life for all eternity for 30 euro or so

  949. a month, that sounds like something we

  950. should do. I say what I've done. I've

  951. made a commitment to God. For every

  952. child I have, I will sponsor a

  953. compassion child. I thought, man, four

  954. would be a lot. And then I had a fifth

  955. child. So, now I'm going to sponsor

  956. another compassion child. So, there you

  957. go. So, don't make that commitment.

  958. Otherwise, I have 21 kids. You know,

  959. it's a choice. Let me finish with this

  960. as we conclude. So, open doors, closed

  961. doors, frustrated plans, everyday

  962. choices. The question we're asking

  963. ourselves is, "But what if I miss it?

  964. What if I get it wrong?" Like, what?

  965. Okay, it's just too free. Like, I wanted

  966. a more I wanted more of like a a

  967. controlled answer, Jamie. Like, gosh,

  968. you mean tell me OPEN DOORS, CLOSED

  969. DOORS, FRUSTRATED PLANS, EVERY CHOICE.

  970. LIKE, AH, WHAT DO I DO? WHAT IF I SCREW

  971. UP? WHAT IF I FALL SHORT? WHAT IF I NOT

  972. HEAR GOD'S VOICE? WHAT IF I GET IT

  973. WRONG? WHAT IF? AND AND all of a sudden,

  974. FEAR AND ANXIETY BACK. AND FEAR AND

  975. ANXIETY DO NOT sound like, "Come to me

  976. all of you who are weary and I'll give

  977. you rest."

  978. Rest to me sounds like there is no fear.

  979. There is no anxiety because the one with

  980. us is carrying the the weight, the

  981. burden of our lives. What does the

  982. Apostle Paul say finally to the fear in

  983. our hearts of what if I miss it?

  984. Ephesians chapter 1 vers 11. We have

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  985. received an inheritance from God. Watch

  986. this. And he makes

  987. everything

  988. work out according to his plan.

  989. He makes everything work out according

  990. to his plan. We want a plan. We want a

  991. map. We want clarity. Next slide,

  992. please. We want

  993. all the answers. But God gave us

  994. something better. He gave us a person.

  995. And his name is the Holy Spirit.

  996. Holy, as we learned, set apart different

  997. dedicated God in spiritual form. And

  998. when you're sitting in a room like this

  999. and you're not a Jesus follower and you

1000. kind of feel that something that

1001. something just, you know, not your

1002. neighbor's hair on your shoulder, but

1003. like you just feel Something's like

1004. nudging at your heart. Someone's

1005. knocking. That's the Holy Spirit. That

1006. is God's person saying to you today

1007. personally as someone who does not

1008. believe, who has not embraced, hey, come

1009. to me and you'll find rest. For those

1010. who have come to believe and have

1011. shredded their lives, the Holy Spirit

1012. lives within us. And what does he do? He

  1013. comforts.

1014. He counsels, he guides, he leads.

1015. Sometimes he confronts and says, "Hey,

1016. it's not the way it's not the best way

1017. for you." He is like our spiritual GPS,

1018. always giving us what we need to take

1019. our next step. And so, as we close, and

1020. next week is the end of the series,

1021. we're going to finish with really

1022. practical things. What should we do in

1023. terms of God's will for life? Number

1024. one, the Apostle Paul's story shows us

1025. that we should just trust God.

1026. He is a good father and where it's open

1027. doors, closed doors, frustrated plans,

1028. everyday choices, here's the important

1029. thing that we lean in and trust in him.

1030. And number two, courageously, boldly, we

1031. take our next step towards
