-
Word of God this morning? Okay, the answer is
-
yes. Okay, thank you. Let's go ahead and open
-
your Bibles. Thank you, Jenny, thank you. Let's
-
open our Bibles to John chapter four. I wanna
-
just review just a little bit so that we get
-
into context of where we're heading this morning.
-
All these tears and it's all good. Man, you guys,
-
amazing church, amazing eldership, but what an
-
amazing God. I just, I... Literally in the language
-
this morning of what the Lord was speaking, I
-
knew he was, I mean, he speaks to everybody,
-
right? That's the beauty of Jesus is that, you
-
know, when Jesus is speaking, he speaks to everybody,
-
but yet he singles you out in the midst of it,
-
right? And I heard the Lord speaking to me this
-
morning very clearly, not just as I was seeing
-
what was happening, but... as AJ was releasing
-
the word of the Lord, there's language that is
-
very unique in how things are phrased, how the
-
Lord speaks to me where I know it's him. And
-
AJ, I don't think you even know this, but the
-
reality is you said things today that those very
-
things and very words in that form and cadence
-
were spoken to my heart. And just to remind me
-
that God is so near and real. and knows the thought
-
sometimes when we begin to wonder, Lord, how
-
long? Anybody in this room ever asked, Lord,
-
how long am I going to have to go through this?
-
Right? Well, I'm telling you this morning, I
-
was up at 2 a .m. to about 3, my mind on some
-
life Bible things, and I'm like, literally, Lord,
-
how stinking long? I'm up here looking at the
-
stars in the windows and I'm talking to you and
-
I'm like, God, you have, you gotta do something.
-
I mean, you've been doing, you know, and when
-
you say stuff like that, or at least when I do,
-
let me not put it on you, I'm gonna put it on
-
me. When I say stuff like that, then I'm reminded,
-
what, you're, okay, okay, okay, okay. You're
-
already doing stuff. I get it. You've been faithful.
-
Yes, you're doing it. It's not coming how, It
-
looked like when I first started praying about
-
this and what I believe for. So you're doing
-
it, but could you just open another gate? Kind
-
of like double portion type thing. And then this
-
morning as the Lord's showing up, just remind
-
us that he's the shepherd of our soul walking
-
with us. Incredible, incredible God that we serve.
-
We've been talking about Jesus and the journey
-
from, taking us from Passover to Pentecost. And
-
I've just kind of shortened it up because I only
-
planned to preach one or two sermons. And this
-
is my ninth message on this in the reality of
-
Jesus and the journey toward the outpouring of
-
the Holy Spirit. And as we dig down into this,
-
I was just thinking about this and waiting on
-
the Lord this weekend. As we dig down into this
-
truth, One of the greatest things that we have
-
in the church, and I'm not just talking about
-
Life Bible Church, I'm talking about the church
-
that Jesus Christ builds. One of the greatest
-
things that set us apart that is different than
-
all other religions or things or even Old Testament
-
understanding is that the Holy Spirit is now
-
available in us and comes to fill us. And that
-
is the most beautiful, incredible, powerful,
-
not just experience. It is not a one -time experience.
-
Salvation, you get, if you stay in it, you get
-
one time. But the Holy Spirit filling is meant
-
to be multiple times. Filling after filling.
-
after filling. That's what he promises. That's
-
why he uses the language in Ephesians says, do
-
not be drunk with wine, which is dissipation,
-
which means that the level of its power and its
-
flow and what it does dissipates, but be filled.
-
And the word there in the Greek is The intent
-
is keep being filled. Keep being filled. And
-
this is kind of, we probably should change the
-
title today. The name of the message should be
-
keep drinking. I mean, the reality is keep being
-
filled with the living water or the wine of the
-
Holy Spirit. is, that is the very plan purpose
-
of God's people. Even when David said it, you
-
prepare a table before me. At the table is the
-
wine of his spirit. That's what he does. We're
-
going to look at that sometime in the next few
-
weeks. But today we're dealing with this incredible
-
truth Of Jesus bringing people into an encounter
-
with living water. And last Sunday we talked
-
about Jesus reveals himself in humanity. We dealt
-
with, if you remember, we dealt with Revelation
Revelation 1 chapter mention
-
chapter 1. Which we barely even cracked into
-
the book of Revelation. Verse 4. Where Jesus
-
changes. to John the apostle, the order of the
-
eternal God to emphasize something. We're used
-
to Jesus or the spirit of God saying, who was,
-
who is, and who is to come. But in Revelation
-
chapter one, verse four, if you just want to
-
turn there and look for yourself, it says, to
-
the seven churches that are in Asia, grace to
-
you and peace from him who is, who was, and is.
-
Notice he focuses on the two things that are
-
still in play. He is now and he is to come. The
-
God who was, he's still that, but that is not.
-
primary in your now. Your now needs to have a
-
reframework of going. He is all that he was when
-
he was doing clear back from Genesis all the
-
way through the Old Testament, all the way through.
-
But now that the New Testament, the Old Covenant
-
has been fulfilled and the New Covenant has come,
-
he shows himself first in your now. And that's
-
a big deal. That now the two areas that you focus
-
on, I focus on, is now and what is coming. But
-
I can't get so focused on what is coming that
-
I miss my now. It's the same word. Now is to
-
come. Is now and is to come. You better spend
-
as much time in the now as you are thinking about
-
what's coming and is to come. And so if we understand
-
that, that Jesus was revealing his now mandate
-
from the father. as he encounters this Samaritan
-
woman, you and I are to be knowing Jesus in now
-
moments and walking according to the same grace
-
and anointing. Now we don't walk as the only
-
begotten son of God, but we walk with Jesus being
-
formed in us now and the spirit of God in us
-
now being able to be led just like he was. It's
-
Christ in us, the hope of glory. And so let's
-
turn to John, gospel of John chapter four, verse
-
three through nine. And Jesus left Judea and
-
departed again for Galilee. And as he had to
-
pass through Samaria, Jesus came to a town of
-
Samaria called Sychar near the field that Jacob
-
had given to his son, Joseph. And Jacob's well
-
was there. We talked about this, my last point.
-
We saw here the field, the inheritance. Jacob
-
had given his, to his son Joseph. Joseph would
-
be the one, if you will, the favored son. But
-
notice, any time there's favor, there's also
-
testing. You can look at it in the scripture.
-
Any time God says, behold, favor is upon you,
-
you can almost just put a dash and testing cometh.
-
It's almost a prophetic language because it's
-
coming. Why? Because it's got to test the character
-
so that the favor can come. Because favor without
-
the character developed will actually destroy
-
you. And so for the plan of fruitfulness and
-
the plan of God getting it to you and through
-
you and upon you, you have to be willing to allow
-
it to be tested. And this is what Jacob, when
-
he gave the double portion to Joseph. Why the
-
double portion? Because he had two sons. It was
-
inheritance. Ephraim and Manasseh. And the favored
-
one of the two, not by selection, the older one
-
missed. And Jacob crossed his hands and Joseph
-
didn't like it, but crossed his hands and blessed
-
Ephraim with a double portion. And so here's
-
the field of a double portion. And here is Jesus,
-
the living well, sitting, attired from his journey.
-
on a natural well. And that's kind of where we
-
left you last week. I won't go through all the
-
points, but just if you want to take a look at
-
that, just seeing Jesus at a well at about the
-
noon hour on a prophetic inheritance of covenant
-
and promise. And the new well is sitting on the
-
old well. What a great picture. The new well
-
is sitting on top of the old well. Now, that's
-
not in my notes, but I just felt like I'm supposed
-
to emphasize this. Why is that so important?
-
Because it is the picture of the scriptures supporting
-
what Jesus is now going to build in the New Testament.
-
Jesus always builds on the blueprints and the
-
truths that are in the old covenant. And so the
-
new well, is sitting on top of the old well.
-
Why? Because the one that finished that covenant
-
is going to have all of that covenant promise
-
in him and that will flow in new impartation.
-
You see, he doesn't just come to cut it off.
-
He comes to fulfill it. And when you come to
-
draw from Jesus, you're not just drawing something
-
that's brand new. You're drawing something that
-
was, is, and is to come. And here it is, the
-
picture of Jesus sitting on that well. And so
-
as he's sitting there, Jesus, wearied from his
-
journey, as he was sitting beside the well about
-
the sixth hour, verse seven, this is where we're
-
at, there came a woman of Samaria to draw water.
-
And Jesus said to her, give me a drink. I mean,
-
not even please. Not even in the text, shalom.
-
right? Every, this is what I love. Jesus is not
-
politically correct because politically correct
-
is going to be in the rest of the verse down
-
here. Let me just read that last little remark
-
from John for Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
-
So Jesus doesn't say hi. He doesn't. Number one,
-
talking to a woman. As a single guy. By yourself.
-
Not having any dealings. As the customary practice
-
was. And then not say even with a greeting. Shalom.
-
Or how are you. I mean none of it. Just looks
-
at her and says. Give me a drink. Now listen.
-
You cannot read that. And get. Jesus not being
-
just a little bit forward. against all social
-
and cultural norms. Just cut through, give me
-
a drink. Excuse me? Samaritan woman said to him,
-
and she basically said, excuse me, only she had
-
enough sand. Do you understand? It wasn't like,
-
oh, yes, sir, yes, sir. She went, how is it?
-
Now you have to get, see, we didn't spend any
-
time on this. You got to get the picture. of
-
a woman. I'm going to say this carefully, but,
-
but because Jesus isn't politically correct as
-
a chief shepherd, I'm not going to be today.
-
Here is a woman now I'm going to, okay, just
-
take it for what it's worth. Here is a woman
-
that has been with a variety of men. Now I, I'm
-
not sure if they had Samaritan cosmopolitan back
-
then. the magazine for ladies, but I'm telling
-
you if, because I certainly don't read Cosmopolitan,
-
I can tell you that right now, but I can tell
-
you dealing with cultural emphasis and what she
-
had dealt with with men, disappointment with
-
men, a desire, it was a love -hate relationship.
-
You can see it by the basis that she'd been with
-
five and the one she was with now was not her
-
own. So she had been through She had been through
-
the gauntlet. I'm not trying to get savory or
-
too spicy in church, but she had been through
-
the buffet a few times. And if you'd been through
-
the buffet a few times of picking men and destroyed
-
relationship, you would tend to be a little soured.
-
First, you just thought it was them. I'm not
-
looking for big amens here. It's their fault.
-
And about the third one, it begins to dawn on
-
you, huh, maybe my picker is bad. And about the
-
fifth one, you just, you can't live with them,
-
but they're just a necessary part of life and
-
you just don't like men. Hello? I'm talking to
-
our society here. And that process, you see,
-
Now, I'm saying this carefully because I know
-
my wife's personality, but if Jesus was to run
-
into Jenny at the well, it would have immediately
-
been, he would have said, give me a drink. She
-
would have said, yes, how much would you like?
-
How many times, how many glasses would you like?
-
I mean, that's Jenny's personality, just a servant.
-
But listen, you've got to get the background
-
of this lady. It's not the fact that she wasn't
-
willing to engage, but she had a little salt.
-
There was a little, as my grandfather once said,
-
man, she was as rough as a cob. And if you don't
-
understand what that means, just go back about
-
80 years. And that's what they used for toilet
-
paper. And when he says it's as rough as a cob,
-
he was meaning it was not smooth and silky and
-
didn't have Charmin on the end of it. It was
-
raw. Her attitude was raw. And Jesus comes to
-
her and says, give me a drink. You know what
-
her first response is? How is it? When a sentence
-
starts with how is it, that is a buddy, why are
-
you talking to me that way? I've seen your kind,
-
I've been with your kind, and I know what you're
-
after. How is it that you are a Jew, ask me a
-
Samaritan for a drink. If you aren't getting
-
that out of the text, you are missing something.
-
Because the reality, it wasn't this beautiful,
-
sterile encounter. It was suspicion. How is it?
-
That is a question. That is a folded arm question.
-
How is it that you would, let's just put a little
-
more sand on it. How is it? Probably threw her
-
hair back, but I've been out of practice at that
-
for a while. How is it? That you, a Jew, ask
-
me, a Samaritan, for a drink. I think there could
-
have been some just italics put under, I am not
-
that cheap, pal. Come on, you have to understand
-
that she carried an atmosphere. If you're not
-
seeing in the text that there's not an atmosphere
-
that follows her, if you're not seeing in the
-
text that the lifestyle actually opened her up
-
to multiple things that would have attached to
-
her, even demonically, about the attitude, the
-
mindset, the rejection, and all of it, it was
-
not a, oh, it's Jesus. It wasn't that. Why are
-
you asking me for a drink, bud? What's up? Look
-
at the text. How is it that you, just pause there.
-
That's a comma. How is it that you, a Jew, that
-
was culturally charged right there, ask for a
-
drink from me, a Samaritan woman. It's like,
-
you're going to try that chauvinist thing on
-
me? You're going to try to demand something of
-
me? After all that your race put us through and
-
what you call us, reminding us of our failure.
-
You see, that's what the Samaritan mindset was.
-
You have to remember when they got taken from
-
the 10 tribes of Israel and dispersed among the
-
Assyrian nations and now we're in Samaria, they
-
were part of the Jewish heritage, but the tribes
-
that did not get dispersed like that from Judah
-
and from Levi and that were there, they looked
-
at the Samaritans as half -breeds and those that
-
had failed and walked away and were unfaithful
-
to their God. So she is, every time a Jewish
-
person would address a Samaritan, it was, you're
-
always speaking to us as we are the rejects and
-
the losers of society. Are we not dealing with
-
modern culture right now with that mindset? That's
-
why this is so important. You can just see it
-
play out even right now. Just the heritage. I
-
can't take it for what it's worth. I've got a
-
backlog of hurts and mindsets that are right
-
now confronting. And think of it. She didn't
-
know it was Jesus. She didn't know it was the
-
son of God, but she is speaking as though this
-
is just some dude that wants her to give him
-
a drink because she's got stuff that she has
-
earned to get into the well to actually get water
-
out. And he's got nothing. Jesus answered her.
-
Verse 10. He didn't even say, don't talk to me
-
like that. He didn't, he didn't, he didn't. He
-
didn't confront that way. What would have happened
-
if it wasn't Jesus was, listen, just do what
-
I'm telling you. Why? Don't you realize I'm the
-
favored one and you're not? It was none of that.
-
What did he say? But he does get a little spicy
-
back. Jesus answered her, if you knew the gift
-
of God and who it is that is saying to you, give
-
me a drink, you would have asked him and he would
-
have given you living water. What an incredible,
-
I think we got to just drill down on this just
-
a little bit more. What an incredible answer
-
from Jesus. If you knew, because see from the
-
outside, this is the point of this story or this
-
account that actually brings things into a fuller
-
understanding. It looks as though this man, come
-
on, I need you to get this. From the Samaritan
-
woman's perspective, it looks as though this
-
man, we're reading it after the fact, has nothing.
-
The only thing he has is that he's Jewish. She's
-
coming to the well. She didn't see money bag.
-
She didn't see. his purse. He doesn't see any
-
traveling companions. There's no donkey. There's
-
no goods. There's no business. There's nothing.
-
Remember when Jesus told the disciples, you're
-
going to go to among the household of Israel.
-
Don't take a knapsack. Don't take a sword. Don't
-
take a money bag. Don't take anything. Just look
-
for the man of peace. You travel with nothing.
-
A labor is worthy of the heart. Folks, do you
-
get the picture here that Jesus, the disciples
-
went in to go buy food for Jesus to bring back.
-
Everything they would have had for the journey
-
was gone now. All she saw is some Jewish dude
-
sitting on a well, in essence, having nothing
-
to his name. And the first person that shows
-
up starts asking her for something out of his
-
lack. That's the natural perception. The natural
-
perception was that this guy needed her and he
-
didn't come across as needing her. You see, that's
-
part of the rub of the sand. When you're just
-
sitting at a well and you don't even have a portable
-
camping cup, those little collapsible ones, just
-
to uncollapse and say, can you fill my cup up
-
with water? He didn't even have a cup. She was
-
going to have to give him a drink either from
-
her own cup or from her own. Bona bag or whatever
-
jar she was pulling out of that. And she might
-
have had to pour water for him to grab and drink.
-
There was nothing. He looked like a dude sitting
-
on the sidewalk that was Jewish, had a religion,
-
and had nothing around him. So automatically
-
her mindset is, this guy's a deadbeat. Hello?
-
This guy has nothing to offer. And then as she's
-
kind of thinking about, I came out here to be
-
alone because of persecution. I came out here
-
alone because I'm kind of the off scour among
-
some of the women. They don't like it. So I'm
-
just, I don't want to deal with their social
-
media. I don't want to deal with their chatter.
-
I am coming by myself in the heat of the day
-
because I don't want to deal with it because
-
I've got myself in a fix. And now I got to deal
-
with this Jewish dude. with nothing except his
-
religion. That's the picture. And then Jesus
-
retorts back, if you knew who it was. Now, I'm
-
not saying Jesus said it snarky. If you knew
-
who it was, he didn't go that way. But he said
-
it like Jesus says it. And it's enough piercing
-
and enough calmness at the same time that it's
-
still unsettling, but it's palatable. If you
-
knew the gift of God and who it was that's saying
-
to you, give me a drink, you would have asked
-
him and he would have given you living water.
-
Now, when you look at the lens of that, what's
-
the next verse that's going to come about? It's
-
going to come about is, sir, the well is deep
-
and you have nothing to draw from. It's like,
-
are you touched? Are you a little mental? Are
-
you on the spectrum? You have to look at it.
-
She wasn't encountering thinking she was going
-
to encounter a prophet. She wasn't thinking that
-
she was going to encounter the Son of God. She's
-
looking at Jesus as an outcast like she was.
-
You see, you have to understand, everybody had
-
left Jesus. He's by himself. He had no representation
-
that would have said, he's somebody. And to get
-
into the Samaritan woman's mindset, and I don't
-
know if you've heard it preached this way before,
-
but you're hearing it right now. To get into
-
the Samaritan mindset, she was looking at things
-
at absolutely a male level perspective. Her interactions
-
with males, her perspectives of males, and a
-
perspective of a Jewish male. Having nothing.
-
And them being the one that seems superior. And
-
when Jesus said, if you knew who it was, I would
-
have given you. Now that had to pique her. Where
-
did mom go? Do we know? Okay. Come out, come
-
out wherever you are. Okay. We need you here.
-
I got, I got to land this plane. So thank you,
-
sir. Give her one travel voucher. She was already
-
on the air. No, just kidding. Oh man. If you
-
knew who it was. Now listen, if you knew, you
-
would have asked. That word there is, you would
-
have asked is actually one word. You would have
-
asked a bunch of English words, one Greek word,
-
ateo. It means you would have, if you knew who
-
it was. Now to me, This is the Holy Spirit doing
-
something very phenomenal here because the definition
-
means to crave and to desire and to want to receive
-
something from. Now, folks, you probably never,
-
thank you so much, guys. You probably never put
-
this together. And I'm telling you, the Lord
-
was speaking to me. Sometimes we make Bible accounts
-
so sterile, we don't see. the fleshly human element
-
that was actually in the text. Jesus was contrasting
-
now the water that she used to drink from men.
-
You've maybe heard the statement, man, drink
-
a cold water. It wasn't ever talking about natural
-
water. It was talking about the man that was
-
standing there that was all handsome. Man, he's
-
a cool drink of water. Any ladies ever heard
-
that expression? Okay, let's see. None of y 'all
-
reading any of the romance novels, but over here.
-
No, I'm messing with you. I'm messing with you.
-
A cool drink of water is a representation of
-
there was a desire in her heart. Now listen,
-
she's not saved. She's an idolater. She has lived
-
to this moment out of her flesh. And so she is
-
sizing up Jesus at this well, whether or not
-
he, what is he after? Is he after in her perspective,
-
what all men are after and what she's lived her
-
life in that process. So when she's asking the
-
question, trying to discern whether or not this
-
guy's a bum or is this guy a potential, because
-
remember everybody else in the city says, stay
-
away from this gal. She's sizing up on the basis
-
of, huh. And when Jesus. uses the phrase, if
-
you knew who it was, I would have given you living
-
water. It is a rhetorical statement that Jesus
-
is using what has been her very emphasis of her
-
whole life as getting carnal desire, as fulfilling
-
her life through carnality and the water of relationship
-
and sexual activity is exactly, and Jesus, turns
-
it on its head and said, if you knew, it means
-
what? You would crave. You would desire. You
-
would, even to the point, are you ready for this?
-
You would beg. He actually is speaking something
-
that had been her whole life in the natural side.
-
And he's using the natural side. I know this
-
sounds crazy to religious people, but it's what
-
he was doing. He was using the natural pull,
-
the natural perspective to bring her into a higher
-
level of encounter with the spiritual that would
-
cause a craving and a desire that she had known
-
before that dissipated, that would never make
-
her thirsty again. That's why. The thirst here
-
was so disappointing over and over. Failure,
-
failure, failure, failure. Jesus said, if you
-
knew who it was, if you knew who it was, you
-
would ask me for living water. She didn't know.
-
Guys, gals, she had no idea that Jesus was speaking
-
of the Holy Spirit. At this point in the conversation,
-
Holy Spirit was still working. hidden behind
-
the scene. She was simply letting Jesus bring
-
some analogies of her life and saying, I have
-
something that your thirst will be quenched.
-
And it wasn't until it went a little deeper that
-
she began to realize that this had turned from
-
a conversation in the natural now to something
-
deeper in the spiritual. And Jesus began to unlock
-
the guards that were there. And the moment as
-
we close here, and I got to close now and Pastor
-
Scott, you can come, but I want us to bow our
-
heads for a moment. I want us to think about
-
something out of all the things that could have
-
been in John chapter four, of all the encounters
-
that Jesus could have had right in the beginning
-
of John, the Holy Spirit decides to put a encounter
-
with a attitude and with a woman. And with the
-
very nature of life that had violated everything
-
in God's word and in God's perspective from the
-
old. Jesus would come to bring them into an encounter
-
with grace that she had never ever experienced.
-
Because the people around her didn't give her
-
grace. She had stopped giving herself grace.
-
There wasn't grace. There was just the idea,
-
as we showed, of rejection and loss, rejection
-
and loss and failure. This morning, as you bow
-
your head and you close your eyes, I'm here to
-
tell you that the Jesus who is, is the same right
-
now as he was right then. He is. He's here to
-
move you past the places where you've been stuck,
-
lost, rejected and failed. He wants you to come
-
to him afresh. He's not afraid to encounter you
-
even with wrong motives that you've had, wrong
-
ideas, even past failures of the degree of what
-
you think might be. How could God even love me?
-
He knows what I did was wrong. Yeah, he's seen
-
it all, but he comes to you at the well. He comes
-
to you at the well and he says, if you knew who
-
it was that is talking to you, you'd ask me,
-
you'd ask me, and I would give you living water.
-
If that's you this morning, you would say, you
-
know what? I choose right now. I want to identify
-
with Jesus. I want to identify with his word.
-
And you would say, I'm here this morning. I need
-
that living water. I've been stuck in my perspectives.
-
I've been stuck. It could be perspectives of
-
men, perspectives of women, perspectives of rejection,
-
perspectives of loss, perspectives of just absolutely
-
feeling like I have no platform to actually encounter
-
God's grace. If that's you this morning and you
-
would say, yes, I need the living water. Would
-
you be so bold this morning just to lift your
-
hands that I could send somebody to pray for
-
you? Thank you. Thank you, Chelsea. Right now,
-
find a lady. Men. Go, go, go, go, go all over
-
this room. Charles, you need that, sir? Okay,
-
yes. AJ, come on. Tim, keep your hands up until
-
I send somebody. Lori, go right behind you, right
-
behind you. Go pray with him, would you? We're
-
sending people to you right now. I need someone
-
in the back. We're moving quickly. Go, go, go,
-
go. Put your track shoes on. Amen. Father, you
-
see him. You see every person in this room. You
-
see those that are right there, right there.
-
Lord, the enemy has been just, has captured them.
-
They've come to the well with no expectation.
-
They've come to the well with no expectation.
-
But today, Jesus comes to the well. Jesus comes
-
and he offers you living water. He doesn't restrain
-
you from what you've done in the past. He doesn't
-
stop you from where life has been. He actually
-
comes to draw from his own life and to give you
-
a drink of acceptance and grace and healing and
-
hope in the name of Jesus. I pray that right
-
now, that in today's house, in the Lord's house,
-
As the shepherd of our soul is here this morning,
-
he's drawing you to himself and he's bringing
-
you as he says your voice, he's extending his
-
hand and bringing you back into that place of
-
these are my people. This is my sheep and you
-
are my son and daughter. And he gives to you
-
now fresh life as the people are praying with
-
you. Stay praying, the rest of us. In Jesus'
-
name, Lord, thank you for being the shepherd
-
of our soul. Pastor Scott. If you are in need
-
of prayer send us a text message at 541 -625
-
-1365. We would love to pray with you.
