  1. Alrighty, well

  2. I don't got no fireworks or nothing, just Luke 20.

  3. So

  4. if you got a Bible

  5. turn there, shouldn't shouldn't she

  6. just

  7. uh

  8. The scriptures should be uh

  9. should fire us up.

  10. Amen.

  11. All right.

  12. Okay.

  13. It's good to see my old friend

  14. this pulpit.

  15. But

  16. uh

  17. we

  18. uh

  19. we've been looking at Jesus in his

  20. Passion Week, and uh

  21. he's uh

  22. he's stirring things up just a little bit.

  23. Not very popular with the religious people.

  24. And

  25. um

  26. we saw him

  27. last time.

  28. Going to the temple daily, knowing what was coming, knowing that he was going to

  29. meet resistance, and uh

  30. knowing that this would be uh

  31. this would be a rough week

  32. And yet

  33. he stayed true

  34. to sharing the word of God.

  35. And it says, and the people were very

  36. attentive

  37. to hear him

  38. And

  39. we just live in a day, folks, where that has to be the case.

  40. If you're going to be a follower, a disciple of Jesus, you have to be attentive

  41. to what he says.

  42. You know, uh

  43. I've heard it a couple times from a friend of mine this last week.

  44. Why do you call me

  45. Lord, Lord, and you do not do the things that I say?

  46. Right?

  47. People will call Jesus Lord, but they won't do what he says.

  48. And uh it's a life of sacrifice, it's a life of uh to identify with his sufferings, it's a life that it

  49. 's not overly appealing.

  50. At face

  51. value.

  52. But

  53. once you start living that way, once you surrender your life to him

  54. and let him

  55. live his

  56. life through you, that's where you find life.

  57. It doesn't make sense to the world.

  58. It doesn't make sense to me sometimes.

  59. But

  60. I

  61. found it to be true.

  62. And

  63. uh, oh, just by the way, I want to thank all of you for praying for our dear little Augie.

  64. And uh

  65. he

  66. um

  67. He's doing much better.

  68. Um

  69. there's still maybe some issues down the road, but

  70. but uh

  71. he's he's eating pretty good and his heart beats a little better

  72. and and everything

  73. and he's changed our lives.

  74. So

  75. It's been really, really a good thing.

  76. And we're crazy about this kid.

  77. And so

  78. if you'd continue to pray for him,

  79. we'd appreciate it.

  80. But as we get into the word

  81. here, we're just going to read verses 1 through 8 this morning.

  82. I won't keep you long.

  83. Feel free to hang out and fellowship.

  84. uh

  85. afterwards

  86. uh

  87. because

  88. we're just kinda

  89. we're kind of just taking it all in.

  90. I'm a little bit numb.

  91. But uh it's it's nice

  92. nice to be here, nice to know that we don't have to tear down, we just hit the power button and we're good to go for a while.

  93. And um

  94. and God's

  95. God's really good that way.

  96. So uh I'm probably gonna take tomorrow off.

  97. So

  98. But these are some powerful words here in in this passage here in these eight verses.

  99. So read along with me if you would.

  100. It says, now it happened on one of those days.

  101. These are the days what Jesus was spending preaching in the temple and sharing God's word.

  102. One of those days, as he taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel.

  103. that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted him, and spoke to him, saying, Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things?

  104. Or who is he who gave you this authority?

  105. But he answered and said to them,

  106. I also will ask you one thing.

  107. And answer me, the baptism of John, was it from heaven

  108. or from men?

  109. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we say from

  110. heaven,

  111. he will say,

  112. Why then did you not believe him?

  113. But if we say from

  114. men

  115. All the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John

  116. was a prophet.

  117. So they answered, and they

  118. So

  119. they answered that they

  120. did not know where it was from.

  121. And Jesus said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

  122. Pray with me.

  123. Lord, we thank you.

  124. Thank you that

  125. you are our authority.

  126. You're the one who came

  127. and

  128. took death on

  129. and you overcame and conquered it

  130. Lord, the death that we all deserve to die.

  131. Lord, the sin that we've all

  132. committed and fallen short of your

  133. glory.

  134. And you came to remedy those two things that are so powerful in our lives

  135. if we have to deal with them on our

  136. our own.

  137. And Jesus, we thank you that you came.

  138. And because

  139. you were God in the flesh, you were able to conquer both sin and the grave.

  140. And so Lord, as we look at your word today, would you

  141. you minister to our hearts, Lord, take us to a place

  142. with you, maybe that we've never been before, Lord, that as we just draw near to you, realizing

  143. that

  144. in this life uh there's so much trouble.

  145. And yet

  146. you will see us through all of it.

  147. You'll give us the strength.

  148. You'll lift up our heads.

  149. You'll lift up our arms when we get weary

  150. You truly are our all in all.

  151. And I pray that we would uh surrender to that

  152. even today

  153. in Jesus' name.

  154. Amen.

  155. And

  156. so it says here that uh

  157. one of those days that

  158. he taught the people, he taught the people

  159. in the temple and preached the gospel.

  160. And I'm wondering what gospel

  161. he preached.

  162. You think about the old

  163. the gospel in the Old Testament, right?

  164. All those passages that pointed to Jesus, I think uh

  165. he might have taken them to Genesis chapter

  166. chapter 3.

  167. Right, verse 15 about the

  168. about the

  169. the seed of the woman and the

  170. and the seed of the serpent and how the seed of the woman was going to crush the head of the

  171. of the serpent and

  172. but he would bruise his heel.

  173. Maybe that's what he was talking about.

  174. Or maybe he took them, he had a couple days here.

  175. Many believe this is Tuesday in the Passion Week.

  176. And that

  177. Maybe he took them to Exodus chapter 12 about the Paschal lamb, that Passover lamb, that was a picture of the sacrifice that would come.

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  178. That when the death angel came

  179. and it saw the home with the

  180. with the blood on the on the doorposts, it would pass over.

  181. You realize you've

  182. if

  183. you

  184. got blood on the doorpost of your heart, the death angel's gonna pass over

  185. Right,

  186. uh

  187. fulfilling John

    John 11:25

  188. chapter 11, verse 25.

  189. I did a funeral yesterday and I share that

  190. I share that verse every time.

  191. I'm the resurrection of the life.

  192. He who believes in me, though he may die, yet shall he live.

  193. Whoever lives and believes in me.

  194. And then he asked that question, right?

  195. Do you believe this?

  196. I did a funeral the day before.

  197. at a gravesite and I asked that question, do you believe this?

  198. And this one old boy in the back goes, yep, I sure do.

  199. We had a little amen

  200. session there for a second

  201. at a funeral

  202. It was awesome.

  203. Because John said, right?

  204. When John the Baptist, there it

  205. behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.

  206. Maybe Jesus

  207. going, that Lamb?

  208. That's me.

  209. That's me.

  210. Or

  211. how about Daniel

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  212. chapter 2?

  213. It was

  214. in our reading this week, those of you

  215. who are doing the hang-on

  216. Bible reading.

  217. Powerful, powerful chapter, right

  218. where

  219. Nebuchadnezzar has this dream and Daniel comes along

  220. and

  221. saves the life of all the astrologers and the wise men in in Babylon.

  222. And he tells him, he said, I saw this figure.

  223. The same figure that

  224. Nebuchadnezzar saw in his dream, a head of gold and chest and arms of silver and

  225. a

  226. torso of bronze and

  227. Legs of steel and feet mixed with clay and iron.

  228. And he says, and then all of a sudden there was this big rock that comes and it crushes

  229. That was

  230. a representation of all the kingdoms of the earth.

  231. It comes and crushes all the kingdoms of the earth and it it

  232. grinds them to powder.

  233. And then this stone

  234. fills the whole earth.

  235. Jesus

  236. probably told that story.

  237. That stone?

  238. That's me.

  239. That's me.

  240. Or how

  241. about Isaiah, right?

  242. We do it at Christmas time

  243. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  244. chapter 9.

  245. I'm going to turn over there real quick.

  246. Isaiah chapter 9, and I love this, verse 2 says, the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  247. Those who

  248. Dwelt

  249. in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.

  250. Didn't Jesus say, I'm the light of the world?

  251. Maybe he took them there.

  252. Right?

  253. And then we go down to

  254. verse 6, the Christmas verses, for unto us a child is born

  255. Unto us the Son is given, and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his

  256. name will be called wonderful, counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, and the increase of the government

  257. and peace

  258. and

  259. increase of his government

  260. and peace there will be no end.

  261. Jesus is going, that's my government.

  262. That's the good news.

  263. Christ is the good news.

  264. He is the gospel.

  265. Amen.

  266. Think about your life right now for just one second.

  267. What would your life be

  268. like without Jesus?

  269. I'd be dead or in prison.

  270. And

  271. um

  272. probably

  273. dead

  274. But when Christ comes into your life and

  275. begins

  276. to change you, he begins to change your thought processes

  277. and your

  278. your

  279. The way you talk, your

  280. attitudes

  281. ,

  282. your desires, what's important and what's not

  283. He

  284. actually, he actually helps you and I look outside of ourselves

  285. because we're so self-consumed

  286. I'm not overly excited about looking in the mirror anymore.

  287. I remember hearing John Corison

  288. years ago saying, you know you're getting old when you get out of the shower and you're glad the mirror's fogged up

  289. Skin

  290. sagging where it never sagged before?

  291. I mean it's just

  292. like

  293. wow.

  294. But no doubt he was

  295. he was sharing this good news.

  296. Maybe he took him to Isaiah 52 and 53, the suffering

  297. savior.

  298. Nobody likes to see that one.

  299. We don't like to think about suffering.

  300. And yet, as believers, you and I are called to it.

  301. We're called to suffer

  302. Because

  303. this is like a training ground.

  304. Because after this one's over, it just gets gooder and gooder.

  305. But our focus, our focus needs to be

  306. on him.

  307. So we're still in in verse one

  308. here back in

  309. back in the 20th chapter of Luke, and it says.

  310. That

  311. the chief priests

  312. and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted him.

  313. They did not like what he was doing.

  314. No doubt they didn't like what he did

  315. a couple days before when he

  316. when he cleansed the temple.

  317. Jesus is confronted by the religious leaders.

  318. They obviously

  319. did not

  320. like the preaching of the gospel,

  321. but there

  322. were

  323. were

  324. they were no doubt irritated by the fact that

  325. Here is this itinerant preacher, a carpenter by trade,

  326. was invading their space.

  327. This was their

  328. house, so to speak.

  329. And

  330. um

  331. And he did it by an obvious authority

  332. and was turning over tables and speaking the word of God

  333. with a power they could not deny.

  334. You cannot deny the power of Christ, you and I.

  335. Try.

  336. Try if you will.

  337. You can't deny it

  338. Because nobody ever did what he did.

  339. He he stands alone

  340. in that

  341. John

  342. 7 tells us, and so there was a division among the people because of him.

  343. Now, some of them wanted to take him, but no one laid hands on him.

  344. Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who

  345. said to him

  346. Why have you not brought him?

  347. And the officers answered, No

  348. man ever spoke like this man.

  349. And then the Pharisees answered them.

  350. Are you also deceived?

  351. Have any of the rulers of the Pharisees believed in him?

  352. No, because

  353. that's why they are sad, you see.

  354. They don't believe in Jesus.

  355. They didn't accept him, right?

  356. Matthew 7:29, for he, Jesus, taught them as one having authority, not as the scribes.

    Matthew 7:29

  357. Though the scribes spoke the word of God, there was no anointing of the Holy Spirit.

  358. There was no power there.

  359. Have you read the word before and just

  360. the Holy Spirit just kind of blows your mind with it?

  361. You're going, oh

  362. My gosh, this stuff is, it's real.

  363. It's alive.

  364. It is like that sharp sword that the writer of Hebrews talks about.

  365. David Jeremiah says

  366. this.

  367. He says, the chief priests and the scribes saw themselves as the ultimate authority in the temple.

  368. And since

  369. Rome even supported the control of the priesthood.

  370. They had not given Jesus the approval to cleanse the temple, so

  371. they demanded to know

  372. by whose authority he had done so.

  373. And that's what it says there in verse 2.

  374. And spoke to him, saying, Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things?

  375. Or who is he who gave you this authority?

  376. The authority

  377. of Christ

  378. But

  379. the things that they saw him do, that's not

  380. authority enough.

  381. They saw him

  382. raise the dead, they saw him heal the blind.

  383. They saw him

  384. restore physical ailments of people.

  385. They saw him do it.

  386. It wasn't enough authority for them.

  387. But

  388. Jesus, like at other times, he responds in verses 3 and 4.

  389. And he says, and he answered and said to them, I

  390. also

  391. will ask you one thing, and answer me.

  392. The baptism of John, was it from heaven or from men?

  393. So

  394. he's playing a game with them here, obviously.

  395. And uh

  396. They've already purposed in their heart to reject Jesus.

  397. Back in Luke chapter 9, we read

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  398. in verse 22 where it says, the Son of Man must suffer many things

  399. and be rejected.

  400. by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed on the third day and be raised to life.

  401. Reject.

  402. They were going to reject him.

  403. They were rejecting him.

  404. You may be here today

  405. You may have an opportunity.

  406. In fact, the Lord may be speaking to your heart

  407. even right now.

  408. Believe me, I know.

  409. I've had that happen.

  410. When your heart goes up a

  411. little bit, your heart rate increases, and you're thinking.

  412. I think God might be talking to me.

  413. Right?

  414. Don't reject that.

  415. Respond to it.

  416. Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord.

  417. Let Him lift you up.

  418. And He will.

  419. He's so faithful to do so

  420. to those who will humble themselves.

  421. The word reject here it means to reject after examination.

  422. Because they've been examining him, right?

  423. That was the process

  424. for this uh Passover week.

  425. The Passover week they would

  426. they would

  427. Had to choose a Passover lamb and after

  428. examining it for four days to see if it had any flaws.

  429. If it did, they had to reject it.

  430. But

  431. what did Pilate say about Jesus?

  432. I

  433. find no

  434. fault in him.

  435. No fault.

  436. Here's the Passover lamb right before him.

  437. And he's perfect.

  438. He's that perfect Passover lamb.

  439. Warren Wersby

  440. puts it this way.

  441. It was required that the Jews carefully examine

  442. the Passover lamb

  443. From the 10th day to the 14th

  444. day to make sure that it had no blemishes.

  445. Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, was watched and tested by his

  446. enemies during that final week, and yet, in spite of what they saw,

  447. And

  448. learned

  449. they rejected him.

  450. I don't think anybody's going to be in hell on accident.

  451. Right?

  452. I believe that God's

  453. God's just, but He's also merciful and gracious.

  454. But when people are faced with the truth of the gospel and choose to reject it,

  455. Their judgment will

  456. be quite harsh.

  457. And rightly so, I believe

  458. Verses 5 through 7 it says, and they reasoned among themselves.

  459. They knew they were in a pickle, right?

  460. It was in a ringer.

  461. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, if

  462. we say

  463. from heaven,

  464. this is the question about John the Baptist, if we say from heaven

  465. He

  466. will say, why then did you not believe him?

  467. But if we say

  468. from

  469. men, all the people will stone us, for they have

  470. per

  471. For they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

  472. And so they answered, and they

  473. they answered that they did not know where he was from.

  474. Stinking liars.

  475. Right?

  476. They knew where he was from.

  477. They knew that John was sent from God.

  478. And unlike Jesus, John was from the priestly line.

  479. He was a

  480. Levite.

  481. And they should have listened to him.

  482. So

  483. they said

  484. we don't know.

  485. I heard somebody, a Christian, a well-known Christian

  486. on a talk show, ask.

  487. Was

  488. asked by the talk show hosts, is

  489. homosexuality wrong?

  490. And the Christian said, I don't know.

  491. You liar

  492. You

  493. do know.

  494. That's like, is fornication

  495. wrong?

  496. Is stealing wrong?

  497. Is

  498. taking the

  499. Lord's name in vain

  500. wrong?

  501. Yes.

  502. Just call a spade a spade.

  503. Let the chips fall.

  504. Yes, it might hurt.

  505. The truth usually does

  506. But the thing, cool thing about the truth is it also usually produces fruit

  507. when it's heated

  508. So they were conniving.

  509. They were just these conniving, slithering snakes, servants of the enemy.

  510. If we say this.

  511. And so

  512. we don't know.

  513. They're denying God's authority

  514. because

  515. John

  516. came preaching with authority.

  517. And what was his message?

  518. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  519. Repent, turn.

  520. Turn from your ways

  521. Because all authority comes from God.

  522. That's kind of a bizarre thought when you think about it.

  523. Romans

  524. 13.

  525. 1

  526. says, let

  527. everyone be subject to the governing authorities.

  528. For there is no authority except that which God has established.

  529. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

  530. Think about that.

  531. Really?

  532. These authorities that we see around the world that are horrific?

  533. Yeah.

  534. Yeah, they are.

  535. It's like God dishes out all this authority.

  536. He gives it to world leaders.

  537. And then they're responsible, they are responsible for what they do with that authority that God gives them.

  538. God gives you an eye authority.

  539. All of us.

  540. Every human has a certain amount of authority that God delivers to them

  541. He gives world leaders authority.

  542. He gives husbands and wives authority.

  543. He gives church leaders authority.

  544. He gives older siblings authority over younger siblings, though the younger siblings would argue that to the grave.

  545. I love seeing families with kids like 12 or 13 years apart, and how a four-year-old and a 17-year-old can fight.

  546. It's hilarious.

  547. But the 17-year-old, because he's bigger and stronger, he can usually uh you know gain the upper hand on his younger siblings

  548. And we have authority from God over our own lives.

  549. God's given us this authority.

  550. We can do, to do, or to not do.

  551. That's the question.

  552. But

  553. what people do with this authority is on them.

  554. What you do with your life, the authority, the sovereignty that

  555. God has given each one of you, it's on us.

  556. The decisions that we make, the places that we go.

  557. The trouble that we get in

  558. or not, it's on us.

  559. You look at history and

  560. and and leaders

  561. You know, we've been going through the Old Testament and

  562. whether it's Nebuchadnezzar or King David

  563. or more modern history with

  564. uh

  565. Mao Zedong

  566. and Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein.

  567. All

  568. these people that I just met and

  569. mentioned abused the authority that God gave them.

  570. All of them did.

  571. Oh, King David, he was a man after God's own heart.

  572. Yeah, but he abused his authority as a king when he

  573. had one of his soldiers killed so he could sleep with his wife.

  574. Right

  575. And Nebuchadnezzar, why

  576. God did not cut that guy's head off and just snuff him out, I don't know.

  577. He was merciful, right?

  578. Turned him into a cow for seven years.

  579. And then brought him back to the throne.

  580. Go figure that one.

  581. It's his

  582. authority.

  583. He can do with it what he wants.

  584. It's his

  585. life.

  586. Your life is his, whether you know that or not.

  587. I don't know if you know that or not.

  588. But your life is his.

  589. We are not our own.

  590. We've been bought with a price.

  591. And so

  592. Jesus, he goes, All right, you guys want to go there?

  593. Neither will I tell you by what authority

  594. I do these things.

  595. I think about this and I said, why didn't Jesus just state the obvious?

  596. Right?

  597. He could

  598. he could have just stated the obvious.

  599. Listen, I'm God, you're not.

  600. It was like

  601. this question that they asked him was

  602. it was a gotcha

  603. question.

  604. You've been around people like that

  605. They ask you a question just to get you.

  606. I had a guy call me one time about this, and

  607. his name was Norman.

  608. Is this

  609. a name?

  610. Sorry, if your name's Norman, but

  611. I was just irritated when Norman called me.

  612. And he just wanted to argue.

  613. He didn't want any answers.

  614. He had questions

  615. about Jesus being the Son of God, as opposed to being God in human flesh.

  616. But

  617. they didn't really want an answer.

  618. Where do you get this authority?

  619. They really kind of put him in that place that no matter how he answered, he would be in trouble.

  620. If he said that he had

  621. No authority, then he was in trouble with the Jews

  622. for invading their temple and acting like a prophet.

  623. If he said that he

  624. his

  625. authority came from God, then he would be in trouble with the Romans, who were always alert to would-be

  626. messiahs, especially during the Passover week.

  627. And so they were gonna pit

  628. Jesus

  629. and

  630. either the government or Jesus and the religious rulers, no matter what, he was gonna be in trouble.

  631. So he chose

  632. not to answer.

  633. Just ask a question with a question.

  634. That's wisdom.

  635. Sometimes I think as believers we need to do that

  636. But notice when the

  637. when the Lord gives us life, the best thing that we can do with it

  638. is give it back to Him.

  639. It's the best thing you can do with your life.

  640. Just give it to the Lord.

  641. Now, I don't know how long it took you

  642. to

  643. realize that

  644. I'm kind of making a mess here.

  645. Right?

  646. I'm selfish, I'm self-centered, I'm sinful, I give in to these sinful desires, and uh I'm

  647. I'm really making a mess.

  648. It was 23.

  649. I was 23 when I finally came to the realization that

  650. I'm not doing so well

  651. with this life that God's given me.

  652. And I learned from a very young age that that there was this Jesus

  653. and that that

  654. mankind in his wickedness deserved this place called hell.

  655. I heard about that as a little boy.

  656. And so

  657. at 23, I threw my hands in the air.

  658. I said, okay

  659. ,

  660. I'm sick of me.

  661. I'm sick of hurting people.

  662. I'm sick of using people.

  663. I'm sick of

  664. This this

  665. these things that I'm addicted to,

  666. I'm just sick of it.

  667. And so I gave my life to him

  668. My

  669. how things changed.

  670. Right?

  671. Taste, the Bible says, and see that the Lord is good.

  672. He's worth giving your life

  673. to.

  674. And

  675. his

  676. authority is able to

  677. equip you.

  678. He gives us the authority by his Holy Spirit to take our thoughts captive.

  679. That's a novel idea.

  680. Right?

  681. Where most people have to go pay

  682. what

  683. 200 bucks an hour

  684. to shrink?

  685. How do you feel about that?

  686. No, just give your

  687. take your thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ as the word

  688. of God tells us.

  689. You have the authority to do that as a believer.

  690. I don't know that the world has the authority to do that.

  691. Because it appears

  692. I don't know about you, the world you live in, but the world that I'm seeing is

  693. no.

  694. People have not taken their

  695. thoughts captive.

  696. Their thoughts have taken them captive, and they are

  697. it, we're a we're

  698. we're a freight train headed towards a huge cliff.

  699. humanity is.

  700. Oh, that we would

  701. glorify the Lord.

  702. Oh, that we would come to him.

  703. And

  704. give what he has given us, give it back to him, and let him

  705. do with it what he will.

  706. I love

  707. Solomon's prayer.

  708. So powerful, right?

  709. Solomon was a mess.

  710. Even after the prayer, God granted him his

  711. wish, right?

  712. Filled him with all kinds of wisdom.

  713. And

  714. knowledge.

  715. The volumes that Solomon wrote.

  716. It's just fascinating.

  717. The man was brilliant, but he was dumb as a post when it came to girls and worshiping God.

  718. Because

  719. he worshipped all these idols.

  720. He had lost sight of the one who had given him the authority that he had.

  721. So

  722. with our lives

  723. And because

  724. Jesus is so powerful, that's why he is able to tell us

  725. in Matthew chapter 11, verses 28 through 30.

    Matthew 11:28–30

  726. Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

  727. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls

  728. For my yoke is easy

  729. and my burden is light.

  730. It's so simple.

  731. And yet we struggle so much with it

  732. And then

  733. in our lives, he

  734. he gives us this this this authority

  735. He gave

  736. his

  737. apostles authority over the demons and all diseases.

  738. I'm so thankful for the authority of Christ Jesus

  739. in this building

  740. Because this place was dark.

  741. This light right now is just like glorious.

  742. You should have been in this room when we first came in this building.

  743. Okay, I gotta

  744. I gotta share a story with you.

  745. So

  746. it was

  747. we were having

  748. okay I'm gonna say

  749. we were having hell

  750. With this

  751. fire alarm system connecting with our HVAC

  752. system here.

  753. It held us up for over a month.

  754. I didn't know what we we were up against.

  755. Nobody could

  756. put their finger on it.

  757. So

  758. about

  759. two

  760. weeks ago, Lee Kearns

  761. and I were in here putting up the security cameras

  762. and my wife, and we went to the back corner of this building.

  763. And it's dark back there.

  764. The only way you could see in there was flashlights.

  765. And we come across this set of double doors.

  766. This might be kind of superstitious stuff.

  767. I don't know.

  768. I think it was some real stuff.

  769. But

  770. and on the double doors were welded these big bars, and across these big bars were all these skulls.

  771. It just it just gave you the e b-jeebies, it just gave you the creeps.

  772. And then above that were

  773. welding into these doors these big black bats with this

  774. oozing gooey

  775. stuff coming out of them.

  776. It was just creepy.

  777. And so my wife and I, we take off, we go to Elko

  778. that one Sunday, and uh

  779. Tyler

  780. Rose, I believe, shared, and

  781. and um

  782. we're coming back, and my wife says, Scotty, what if there's something in that building that

  783. That

  784. uh

  785. we haven't eradicated.

  786. I don't know, well.

  787. She said

  788. like

  789. them doors

  790. Because the writing has been on the wall in this building.

  791. Right?

  792. I told you about the stay

  793. thing back here.

  794. We

  795. had a little powwow right here in this really dark room right here

  796. praying about this building

  797. and

  798. and um

  799. and and

  800. and I'm going back here thinking, no way.

  801. I'm by myself and I'm pacing back and forth

  802. Back and forth.

  803. I'm just pacing back and forth.

  804. I think

  805. there ain't no way.

  806. This building is too big, right?

  807. And

  808. um

  809. and

  810. it's dark.

  811. And I don't want to.

  812. But all the ones that we just prayed with said, we think this is it.

  813. And I'm going, no.

  814. And so I'm pacing back and forth right back here in this hallway.

  815. And I

  816. have my hands on my head and I'm talking to the Lord and I'm going.

  817. I says, we can't.

  818. And right there in big cursive letters, it says, stay.

  819. Stay.

  820. I said, You're kidding.

  821. So anyway, as the story goes, and there was a couple times I was in this building all by myself, and folks, I'm telling you, every hair on my body stood on end.

  822. And I know what that is.

  823. I know darkness, I know a demonic presence when I, and

  824. right, this was this was Death Alley here

  825. in

  826. the old planet Doom.

  827. So the next Monday when we get back, and we're still there there is no fix for what's going on here.

  828. I think we're out months before we can get this thing fixed.

  829. So I take my drill gun, I go take those doors off

  830. As my dad would say, they were heavier than a dead priest.

  831. Now, I don't know how heavy that is, but they were heavy.

  832. And so I picked these doors up, you know, got under them and picked them up and took them across the parking lot, faced them away from the building.

  833. And before I got the hole uh boarded up, I walked through here

  834. and

  835. the fire alarm guy was here

  836. And he said, hey, I just rewired all these

  837. duct

  838. uh detectors.

  839. He says, we're calling for an inspection.

  840. And I'm like, what?

  841. He said there

  842. were

  843. I

  844. you're gonna call for an inspection this week?

  845. Yeah, we're ready for an inspection.

  846. And that wasn't even

  847. on our radar.

  848. I mean, because we

  849. knew we were gonna have to fix this problem.

  850. And I'm just thinking, Lord, could it have been that simple?

  851. I believe it could have.

  852. But Jesus has the authority over the darkness that took place in this building.

  853. Right?

  854. Greater is He that is in us than He that is in the world.

  855. Amen.

  856. And that's so true.

  857. Because there is no authority except the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  858. There is nothing that can come

  859. can rival

  860. him.

  861. Nothing.

  862. Just like.

  863. We

  864. get to be the king's kids.

  865. And he transfers this authority to us.

  866. He gives us help.

  867. He gives us strength to

  868. resist the evil one and to

  869. overcome

  870. and to

  871. To be healed.

  872. He gives us all these things.

  873. I'm going to close with a passage out of 2

  874. Timothy this morning, and then

  875. we're going to do communion.

  876. And it's found in 2

    2 Timothy 4:1–5

  877. Timothy

  878. 4, verses 1 through 5.

  879. And it says, I charge you therefore

  880. before God

  881. and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead.

  882. At his

  883. appearing and his kingdom.

  884. Preach the word.

  885. Be ready in

  886. season and out of season.

  887. Convince, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering

  888. and teaching

  889. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heal

  890. heap up them for themselves

  891. teachers

  892. and they will turn their ears away from the truth and be turned aside to fables.

  893. But you

  894. be watchful in all things, endure affliction, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.

  895. Folks, that's to all of us.

  896. And so as we go forward, and like

  897. now we have a home here

  898. and

  899. other ministries are going to start up.

  900. Time is short.

  901. Let's go share the gospel.

  902. Do the work of an evangelist.

  903. People need to get saved.

  904. Yes, we're going to have to put more chairs in.

  905. That's okay.

  906. Right?

  907. We may have to go to multiple services.

  908. I don't know.

  909. I don't really like that, but whatever the Lord has for us, we need to be willing to do.

  910. Why?

  911. Because he has the authority to do it.

  912. We just have to come under his

  913. authority and say, yes, Lord, here

  914. am I, send me.

  915. Stand with me, would you, and let's pray.

  916. Take out your elements.

  917. Lord, thank you.

  918. Thank you for this

  919. life you've given us.

  920. Lord, these opportunities you tell us that the fields are widened to

  921. harvest.

  922. Pray that the Lord of the harvests

  923. and labors

  924. Lord, that would be us.

  925. Would you equip us?

  926. Would you help us to be

  927. your people in these days

  928. Lord, that we would realize that you have come

  929. to give us life and that more abundantly, Lord, and and that is the authority that you

  930. you have within yourself

  931. to give this life that we

  932. we can't have it without you

  933. And so, Lord, help us to never forget that.

  934. Would you be with your people, Lord?

  935. Go before us, direct our steps

  936. in Jesus' name.

  937. Amen.

  938. Let's hold the bread before the Lord as we remember the body that was broken for us.

  939. Father, thank you so much

  940. for your

  941. your

  942. body

  943. that you gave it up.

  944. Lord, you laid it down.

  945. You were that

  946. drink offering, Lord

  947. you were poured out, Lord, as you were uh

  948. brutalized and beaten, Lord.

  949. And uh

  950. we see even in this passage today the hatred that humanity and and the world and the devil have for you

  951. And so, Lord, thank you that you've changed our lives.

  952. You've

  953. made yourself real to us, Lord.

  954. And so we want to honor you today as we remember the body that was broken for us, Lord, that was uh

  955. that was pierced and shredded.

  956. and uh received a crown of thorns, Lord.

  957. None of it did you deserve.

  958. And all of us deserved exactly what you received, Lord.

  959. So

  960. we

  961. we worship you, we thank you, we pray that you would bless this bread as we remember your body.

  962. In Jesus' name, let's

  963. partake.

  964. And likewise

  965. He

  966. took the fruit of the vine and said,

  967. this is my blood.

  968. This is

  969. the blood of the new covenant.

  970. Lord, that you signed that covenant in blood.

  971. And uh

  972. your lifeblood, that you would give us life

  973. as we would come to you and receive your sacrifice.

  974. Lord, that uh if we confess with our mouth

  975. the Lord Jesus

  976. and believe in our heart that you were raised from the dead

  977. the dead, Lord, we're saved.

  978. And so Lord, we thank you for that promise, that hope,

  979. that

  980. that power, Lord, the power to

  981. cleanse us from our sin

  982. and to remove the fear of death, Lord, because of all that you did.

  983. there at Calvary

  984. as you allowed your

  985. lifeblood

  986. to be poured out.

  987. And Lord, we just

  988. we remember it with thanksgiving as we remember you.

  989. And we pray that you

  990. Bless the cup now as we partake.

  991. In Jesus' name, let's partake.

  992. Okay, we're gonna

  993. We're going to close with a with a little ditty

  994. and uh

  995. might be a knee slapper, but if you need

  996. if you need prayer over at the cross, uh

  997. please, as we're singing, go ahead and go over and get prayed for
