  1. Now the fact of life is that life is tough.

  2. It's not easy. Life is tough. Life is hard. Life

  3. is difficult. Since Adam's sin, the world was broken and

  4. everything on the planet is broken. Nothing works perfectly. I've

  5. said this many times. Your body doesn't work perfectly. The

  6. economy doesn't work perfectly. No relationship works perfectly. Your marriage

  7. doesn't work perfectly. And life is full of losses. We

  8. have defeats and we have disappointments. This is not heaven.

  9. That's why we pray, thy will be done on earth

  10. as it is in heaven. Because in heaven, there are

  11. no defeats. There are no disappointments. But on earth, nothing

  12. works perfectly all the time. How do you rise above

  13. the inevitable losses in your life. How do you rise

  14. above them? Well, today we come to the second beatitude.

  15. It's Matthew chapter five, verse four, and Jesus says this.

  16. God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

  17. What in the world does he mean by that? In

  18. other words, the way to be happy is to be sad?

  19. That just seems like a great reversal. What does he

  20. mean by this? God blesses those who mourn. Well, that's

  21. what we're going to look at this weekend on how

  22. to handle the losses of life and how God blesses

  23. a broken heart. Now, I don't know what you're going

  24. through right now. I hope you're going through a relatively

  25. easy time, but you may not. You've got conflicts. You've

  26. got chaos. You've got a bad health report. You just

  27. got laid off. You've had a fight with your Boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife,

  28. the money isn't there where you need it, and you're

  29. under tension. There are things, you've had a loss in

  30. your life, or you've had a death in your life,

  31. or you've had something that has caused you to have grief.

  32. I wanna just give you a few things on how

  33. to be blessed in a broken world. One of them

  34. is this, God doesn't expect me to be happy all

  35. the time. That's just a fact of life. God doesn't

  36. expect you to be happy all the time. There is

  37. this myth that Christians, if you're a believer, if you

  38. know Jesus, you should be always smiling, always happy, always cheerful,

  39. skipping the hills and picking flowers and talking about peace

  40. and love. No, no you're not. In fact, the Bible

  41. says in Ecclesiastes 3, 4, there's a time for everything.

  42. There's a time for everything. And there's a season for

  43. every activity under heaven. In other words, life is a

  44. series of opposites. There's a time to weep. There's a

  45. time to laugh. There's a time to mourn. And there's

  46. a time to dance. And so the Bible says that

  47. sometimes weeping is appropriate. Sometimes mourning is appropriate. Sometimes grieving

  48. is appropriate. Because the fact is the world is filled

  49. with a lot of sadness. All you have to do

  50. is read the paper and read about little girls getting

  51. kidnapped and fires and murders and wars and all kinds

  52. of things. There's a lot of pain on this planet.

  53. And sometimes the only appropriate logical response to life is grief.

  54. God doesn't expect you to simply grin and bear it,

  55. to stuff your emotions, and to smile in the middle

  56. of all of the storms of life. No, in fact,

  57. the Bible says, blessed are those who mourn. God blesses

  58. you when you grieve. Why? Why does he do that? Well,

  59. we're gonna look at that. Now, a lot of people

  60. think that grief is only for funerals, like, you know,

  61. if you lose a loved one then you grieve. But

  62. the fact is, there are a lot of losses in life.

  63. There are thousands of losses. You can lose your health,

  64. you can lose your job, you can lose your money,

  65. you can lose your reputation, you can lose your energy,

  66. you can lose a dream. There are thousands of different

  67. losses in life. And God says, the only appropriate response

  68. to the losses of life is not to fake it,

  69. but to face it. And not to go around grinning,

  70. but to actually grieve But the Bible says I'm to

  71. mourn my losses, which is things, bad things that happen

  72. to me. And the Bible says I'm to mourn my disappointments,

  73. which are good things that didn't happen to me. Good

  74. things that didn't happen to you. That's a reason to mourn.

  75. The Bible says I'm to mourn my sins, that I'm

  76. to grieve over my sins. The Bible says I'm to

  77. grieve and mourn over the suffering in the world and

  78. not be, you know, blasé about it. The Bible says

  79. I'm actually to grieve for my friends who don't know Jesus,

  80. who are spiritually lost. And there are a lot of

  81. things the Bible tells us to grieve over, but God

  82. doesn't expect you to be happy all the time. Second thing,

  83. write this down, is that grief is essential to my health.

  84. It's essential to my emotional health, to my spiritual health,

  85. to my physical health, and to my mental health. In fact,

  86. If you never grieve about anything, if you're never sad

  87. about anything, it means one of three things. A, you're

  88. out of touch with reality, because there's a lot of

  89. things to be sad about in this world. Or B,

  90. you are out of touch with your own emotions and

  91. you're living in denial, because when you love and you

  92. see sad things, that makes you grieve. Now grief is

  93. a painful emotion, but it's a healthy emotion, and it's

  94. a helpful emotion. And it is God's gift, it's the

  95. tool that God gives us to get through the transitions

  96. of life. I've told you this before. There is no

  97. growth in your life without change. You can't grow without change.

  98. There is no change without loss, because you lose some

  99. of the old for the new. There is no loss

  100. without pain, and there is no pain without grief. To

  101. go through life without grieving would be like a mother

  102. who says, I wanna have a baby without going through

  103. the pain of labor. It isn't gonna happen. Now, there

  104. are two unhealthy reactions to the losses of life. One

  105. is repression and the other is suppression. Repression is when

  106. I unconsciously try to block a painful thought out of

  107. my mind. That's repression. I unconsciously try to block a

  108. painful thought out of my mind. Suppression is when I

  109. consciously try to block a pain. I'm not gonna think

  110. about that. I'm not gonna think about that. when I

  111. consciously try to block a painful thought out of my mind.

  112. Both of these are denials. When you go through a

  113. tough time, when your heart is hurting, when your heart

  114. is breaking, God doesn't want you to suppress it. God

  115. doesn't want you to repress it. God wants you to

  116. express it to friends and confess it to him. And

  117. when you do that, you're on the road to healing.

  118. If I don't let it out, I will act it out.

  119. If I don't let it out in healthy ways, I'm

  120. gonna act it out in unhealthy ways. Some of you

  121. were hurt many years ago growing up. Maybe your parents divorced.

  122. Maybe you were abused. Maybe you were hurt by something

  123. somebody said about you. And it hurt very, very deeply.

  124. But as a child, you didn't know how to grieve healthy.

  125. You didn't know how to grieve good. So you just

  126. pushed it down and you stuffed it down and you've

  127. never grieved over that hurt. Well, you need to go

  128. back and grieve over it. Why? Because if you don't

  129. grieve the losses of life, you get stuck at that stage.

  130. Let me say that again. This is one of the

  131. most important things you're ever gonna learn. When you don't grieve,

  132. when you don't go through grief, when pain happens in

  133. your life and you don't let it, you don't feel it,

  134. you push it down, you get stuck emotionally at that

  135. stage and you spend the rest of your life reacting

  136. to something that happened a long time ago and you're

  137. taking it out on the people around you now and

  138. that's not fair. It's unhealthy to stuff it. You've heard

  139. me say this before. When I swallow my grief, my

  140. stomach keeps score. If I don't talk it out, I

  141. take it out on my own body or on other people.

  142. And if I don't let it out in healthy ways,

  143. then I'm gonna act it out in unhealthy ways. And

  144. when you swallow negative emotions, your body gets sick. I've

  145. said many times, it's not just what you eat, it's

  146. what eats you. that makes you sick. David talked about

  147. this in Psalms. David says in Psalm 32 verse three,

  148. when I kept things to myself, I felt weak deep

  149. inside me and I moaned all the day long. When

  150. you go through a loss in life, you lose a job,

  151. you lose a friend, you lose a deal, you lose

  152. something in your life that you were hoping would happen

  153. or something you had and you lost it. You lose

  154. a marriage. You can either mourn or you can moan.

  155. Moaning is negative. Mourning is positive. Mourning is having a

  156. pity party. Mourning is calling out to God in your

  157. grief and in your pain. Psalm 39 verse two, David says,

  158. I was silent and I held my peace to no

  159. avail and my distress only grew worse. The things that

  160. happen to you around you, the bad things happen to you,

  161. they're not your choice. But grief is a choice. And

  162. it's a healthy choice. And when you choose to let

  163. it out, you have to choose to allow yourself to

  164. feel the sad emotions. So I don't like feeling sad. No,

  165. you don't. But not everything that's helpful feels good. Not

  166. everything that's healthy feels good. If you don't mourn the

  167. losses of life, you get stuck at that stage. What

  168. I want us to look at is how God blesses

  169. broken hearts. Because the second beatitude, Jesus says this, God

  170. blesses those who mourn. I want God to bless your

  171. life in spite of all the bad things that have

  172. happened and in spite of all the bad things that

  173. are gonna happen. And in order for God to bless

  174. your life, Jesus says, blessed are those who mourn for

  175. they shall be comforted. How does God comfort me when

  176. I grieve? I can speak from experience on how God

  177. comforts And as I've looked back over my life, I

  178. see six ways that God blesses a broken heart. So

  179. how do you get through? You don't get over it.

  180. A lot of people think, well, I'm just gonna get

  181. over this grief. No, you're not gonna get over it.

  182. If it's serious, if you're married for a certain number

  183. of years and then you divorce, you don't get over it,

  184. you get through it. If you have a loved one,

  185. a husband, a wife who dies, you don't get over that,

  186. you get through it. Now, you can't go over grief.

  187. You can't go under grief. You can't go around grief.

  188. You gotta go through the grief. And if you're scared

  189. to express emotion and you refuse to go through it, that,

  190. as I said, that's where you get stuck. But how

  191. do I get unstuck? You let God help you. Let

  192. God comfort you. Blessed are those who mourn, for they

  193. shall be comforted. And how does God comfort us? Six ways.

  194. The first way God blesses a broken heart is God

  195. draws us close to himself. Psalm 34, verse 18. The

    Psalms 34:18

  196. Lord is close to the brokenhearted and he saves those

  197. whose spirits have been crushed. When you are grieving, you

  198. often feel like God's a million miles away, but he's

  199. not a million miles away. He's never been any closer.

  200. What you feel and what's real are not the same thing.

  201. Not everything you feel is real, and not everything that's

  202. real do you feel. The Bible says God is close

  203. to the brokenhearted. He's paying attention. He's not aloof. He's

  204. not distant. Hebrews 13, 5, I will never leave you.

  205. That means even in your worst pain. It means even

  206. in your most embarrassing disgrace. It means even in your

  207. most massive failure. Even in the thing you're most ashamed

  208. of in your life. I will never leave you and

  209. I will never abandon you. In 2 Corinthians 6.10, it

  210. says this, our hearts ache, but at the same time,

  211. we have the joy of the Lord. What does that mean?

  212. That's the difference Jesus makes. If you don't have Jesus

  213. in your life, then God isn't close to you at

  214. that moment and you're on your own. You don't have

  215. any other resources. You're there to handle the pain by yourself.

  216. God never intended for you to handle the pain by yourself. First,

  217. the Bible says God draws us close to himself. And

  218. then here's the second thing, write this down. God grieves

  219. with us. Now, the reason you have the ability to

  220. grieve is because you are made in God's image. The

  221. only reason you have any emotion at all is because

  222. God is an emotional God. God is a suffering God.

  223. And God is a sympathetic God. He's not aloof. He's

  224. not apathetic. He's standing, not standing on the sidelines. He

  225. suffers with us. Isaiah 53 verse three says this. Jesus

  226. was a man of sorrows. Have you ever seen that verse? Jesus,

  227. it's out of Isaiah, it's prophecy, was a man of

  228. sorrows acquainted with bitterest grief. He knew suffering firsthand. So

  229. when you come to Jesus, it's not like Jesus goes,

  230. I have no idea what you're talking about When your

  231. heart is breaking and you're in pain, it's not like

  232. Jesus is going, I don't understand it, I don't get that,

  233. just buck up and put on a happy face. No,

  234. Jesus was a man of sorrows. He was acquainted with grief.

  235. I told you that grief is actually an evidence of love.

  236. And the more you love, the more you're gonna grieve

  237. about things. The more you love, the more you're gonna

  238. understand grief. Sadness is not weakness. Jesus was the strongest

  239. man who ever lived. For a man to show emotion

  240. is not a sign of weakness. It's actually a sign

  241. of strength. Weak men are scared of their emotions. Weak

  242. men are afraid of tears. It freaks them out. They

  243. go nutty. Why? Because it scares them. When you're a

  244. strong man, you're not afraid of emotion. You're not afraid

  245. to show it. You're not even afraid to cry. Jesus

  246. was the strongest man who ever lived. So never be embarrassed.

  247. Never be embarrassed by tears. Now there's a third thing

  248. that God does in blessing our broken hearts. And that

  249. is this. God gives us a church family for support.

  250. God never meant for you to go through life on

  251. your own. And God says, I didn't intend for you

  252. to go through grief. You know, the old statement that

  253. when you share a joy, it's doubled, and when you

  254. share a sorrow, it's halved. When you carry it all yourself,

  255. you're carrying a load that God never intended for you

  256. to have. When something bad happens to you, and you say,

  257. I'm not gonna tell anybody about this, I'm gonna keep

  258. it a secret, I'm gonna keep it to myself, you

  259. have just broken one of the principles of God's word.

  260. God says we're meant to grieve in community. Healing comes

  261. in groups. Healing comes in the church. Healing comes in community.

  262. We're better together. You weren't meant to carry it on

  263. your own. Look at this verse, Romans 12, five, 10,

  264. and 15. Three verses in Romans chapter 12. In Christ,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  265. we who are many form one body, and each member

  266. belongs to all the others. Be devoted to each other

  267. like a loving family. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and

  268. mourn with those who mourn. Now, these are commands, and

  269. if you call yourself a follower of Christ, they're commanded

  270. for you. In Christ, we form one body, that's the church.

  271. The church is the family of God, and it's the

  272. body of Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5.11 says, comfort each other,

  273. and give each other strength. Now let me give you

  274. a couple suggestions, because right now, you're in one of

  275. two positions. You're either going through pain yourself, and you

  276. need comfort. or you're not going through pain and you

  277. need to comfort others. Let me give you two suggestions

  278. for comforting people when they go through any kind of loss.

  279. Number one, never minimize another's pain. Kay was talking the

  280. other day, we were in London, and she was speaking

  281. and she said, one of the words you can delete

  282. from your vocabulary when you're talking to somebody in pain

  283. is the word at least. And she told me about

  284. a lady, a mother, who had lost a child through drowning.

  285. And a neighbor came over in a meaningful attempt to comfort, said, well,

  286. at least you're young enough to have another child. Are

  287. you kidding me? I'm sure that mama said, I'm not

  288. wanting another child. I want my child back. I want

  289. my child back. Don't tell me. Well, at least you've

  290. got three other kids. Are you kidding me? Well, at

  291. least you've got your, eliminate the phrase at least from

  292. your vocabulary when talking to somebody in pain. It doesn't help.

  293. Just never minimize the pain of others. And I would

  294. say again, parents, stop trying to teach your kids to

  295. stop it. Don't cry now. You know, the typical reaction

  296. when somebody's in pain, we try to fix it immediately.

  297. Don't be in a hurry to fix anything. You don't

  298. need to fix it. God will fix it in due time.

  299. What you need to do is just be there and

  300. be aware and care. So never minimize. The other thing

  301. is never rush people. Never rush people. Pain and grief

  302. takes time. And nobody can figure out how long the

  303. grief's gonna take for any particular thing in your life

  304. but you. I can't tell you what's the appropriate time

  305. to grieve. For anything in your life. You're just going

  306. to have to figure that one out yourself. And it's

  307. different for everybody else. A feeling is neither right or wrong.

  308. It's just a feeling. Let me say that one again.

  309. A feeling is never right or wrong. It's just a feeling.

  310. So husbands, quit trying to talk your wife out of feelings. Why?

  311. quit trying to talk your husbands out of feelings. And

  312. so you show grace to each other and you never

  313. rush people. There's a fourth way that God blesses broken hearts.

  314. God uses grief to help us grow. God uses grief

  315. God uses pain, even, to help us grow. And he

  316. does it in three ways. Here are three verses that

  317. illustrate three different ways. First, God uses pain to get

  318. our attention. Pain is God's megaphone. Pain is saying, hello!

  319. We rarely change when we see the light. We change

  320. when we feel the heat. Here's what the Bible says,

  321. Proverbs 20, verse 30. Sometimes it takes a painful experience

    Proverbs 20:30

  322. to make us change our ways. That's in today's English version.

  323. Anybody agree with that verse? Yeah, sometimes it takes a

  324. painful experience to make us change our ways. Second way,

  325. he brings good out of bad. One of the most

  326. famous verses in the Bible is Romans 8, 28. We know,

  327. we know, not guess, not hope, we know that in

  328. all things, not some, not just the good, In all things,

  329. God works. In all things, God works for the good

  330. of those who love him. It's an opportunity to grow

  331. in character. Every time you go through pain. And the

  332. third thing he does is he prepares us for eternity.

  333. Look at this next verse. 2 Corinthians 4, 17 and 18.

  334. These troubles are getting us ready for an eternal glory.

  335. What troubles? the pain you're going through right now. These troubles,

  336. that sickness, that sadness, that suffering, that lack, that loss,

  337. that pain, that pressure, that problem, these troubles are getting

  338. us ready for an eternal glory that will make all

  339. our troubles seem like nothing, like nothing. Things that are

  340. seen don't last forever. The things that are not seen

  341. are eternal. God's more interested in your character development than

  342. in your comfort. Why? Because comfort's gonna be on for

  343. trillions and trillions and trillions and trillions a year. This

  344. is the get ready stage. This is the learning stage.

  345. You see, you can handle an enormous amount of pain

  346. when you can realize there's a good purpose in it,

  347. like labor and having a baby. But when you don't

  348. see any purpose in the pain, then it's easy to

  349. give up. When the pain is unceasing, when the pain

  350. never stops, when the pain keeps going, you need to

  351. see God's purpose. And what is God doing? First, is

  352. he trying to get my attention? Second, is he trying

  353. to bring good out of bad? Third, is he preparing

  354. my character for heaven? Is he giving me an opportunity

  355. to grow in Christ-likeness? Things that are seen don't last forever,

  356. but things that are not seen are eternal. The fifth

  357. way that God comforts us when we mourn is that

  358. God gives us the hope of heaven. This life is

  359. not all there is, that this is just the warm-up act,

  360. and that we're living for so much more. The amount

  361. of time you're gonna spend on earth is really quite small.

  362. You're only gonna get 80, 90, at the most, maybe

  363. 100 years. That's nothing, nothing. It's gonna be over before

  364. you realize it. It's nothing compared to millions and millions

  365. and millions and millions and millions and millions of years

  366. in heaven. The Bible says we have the hope of heaven.

  367. If there were no hope of heaven, I would be

  368. in despair. Because there's just too much bad in the world.

  369. But the fact is, the Bible says, 1 Thessalonians 4.13,

  370. talking about believers who died. Paul says, we don't want

  371. you to be ignorant about believers who've died. We don't

  372. want you to grieve like the people who have no hope.

  373. There's two kinds of grief. You can grieve with hope

  374. or you can grieve without hope. Let me tell you,

  375. you want the first one. I don't know how many

  376. funerals that I've done. I don't know how many times

  377. I've stood at the bedside of somebody taking their last breath.

  378. I have been at the funerals and looked in the

  379. faces of people who had no hope when a loved

  380. one died. And I've seen the terror on their face

  381. and the despair on their face. You see, the test

  382. of your faith, the test of your belief system, the

  383. test of your worldview is not how you handle the

  384. parties of life. The test of your worldview is how

  385. you handle the failures and how you handle the funerals

  386. and how you handle the deaths of life. That's the

  387. acid test. The Bible says we have a hope, and

  388. so we grieve, but we grieve with hope. When a

  389. Christian dies, why do we grieve? I mean, that Christian

  390. is going to heaven, they're going where they're made for,

  391. they're going where they're gonna spend eternity, and they're going

  392. where you're gonna go too if you know the Lord.

  393. We're not grieving them in a funeral. We're grieving us.

  394. We miss them. We grieve with hope. Nonbelievers grieve without

  395. any hope. That's disastrous. It's devastating. It's debilitating. It's despairing.

  396. What is our hope? Revelation 21 verse four says this.

  397. God will wipe every tear from their eyes and there

  398. will be no more death or mourning or crying, or pain.

  399. For the old order of things will have passed away.

  400. I am looking forward to that day so much. Finally,

  401. there's one more thing, and this is a big one.

  402. God uses our pain to help others. There's a purpose

  403. in your pain. This is called redemptive pain. This is

  404. the highest and best use of the pain you go through.

  405. God does not want you to waste a hurt. God

  406. never wastes a hurt, but we often do because we're

  407. not willing to use it to help other people. God

  408. uses our pain to help others. This is the highest

  409. and best use. Who can better help the mother of

  410. a special needs child than another mother of a special

  411. needs child? Who can better help somebody who's lost a

  412. son or daughter in a war than somebody who lost

  413. a son or daughter in a war? Who could better

  414. help somebody who has gone through the pain of an

  415. addiction or a marriage failure or a molestation or any

  416. of the other evils in the world than somebody who

  417. went through that? God does not want you to waste

  418. your hurt. This is redemptive hurt. He wants you to

  419. redirect your focus. 2 Corinthians 1.4, God comforts us in

  420. all our troubles so that we can comfort others with

  421. the same comfort we receive from God. Now listen very closely.

  422. Your greatest ministry will come out of your deepest hurt.

  423. Your greatest ministry will come out of your deepest hurt.

  424. You see, we think the world is impressed by how

  425. we handle prosperity. But the world is actually impressed by

  426. how we handle adversity. We think that it is our

  427. success that gives us credibility to be a witness. But

  428. God says, no, it is our suffering that gives us credibility.

  429. And here's the bottom line, I'll say it again. We're

  430. in a broken world, and so every day, nothing works perfectly.

  431. And that means every day you need to be either,

  432. you either need comfort or you need to comfort others.

  433. Right now, you're in one of two categories. Put yourself

  434. on it. Right now, you either need help because you're

  435. in really bad pain or you need to help others.

  436. And maybe, just maybe, God wants to do both at

  437. the same time. That's called being a wounded healer. If

  438. you wait until you're completely healed to help other people,

  439. guess what? You're gonna wait a long time. Because you're

  440. not gonna be fully healed of everything in your life

  441. until you get to heaven.
