  1. Verse number 11, where the Bible says this,

  2. And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable,

  3. ! Because he was nigh to Jerusalem,

  4. and because they thought the kingdom of God should immediately appear.

  5. He said, Therefore, a certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom,

  6. and to return.

  7. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them,

  8. Occupy till I come.

  9. But his citizens hated him.

  10. And he sent a message after him, saying,

  11. We will not have this man to reign over us.

  12. And it came to pass that when he was returned, having received the kingdom,

  13. then he commanded the servants to be called unto him,

  14. to whom he had given the money,

  15. that he might know how much every man hath gained by trading.

  16. Then came the first, in verse 16, saying,

  17. Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.

  18. And he said unto him,

  19. Well, thou good servant, because thou hast been faithful in a very little,

  20. have thou authority over ten cities.

  21. And the second came, saying,

  22. Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.

  23. And he said likewise to him,

  24. Be thou also over five cities.

  25. And he came, saying,

  26. And another came, saying,

  27. Lord, behold, here is thy pound,

  28. which I have kept laid up in a napkin.

  29. For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man,

  30. and thou takest up that thou layest not down,

  31. and reapest that thou didst not sow.

  32. And he saith unto him,

  33. Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant.

  34. Thou knewest that I was an austere man,

  35. taking up what I laid not down,

  36. and reaping that I did not sow.

  37. Wherefore, then gavest thou not my money into the bank,

  38. that it might at my coming have acquired,

  39. I have required mine own with usury.

  40. And he said unto them that stood by,

  41. Take from him the pound,

  42. and give it to him that hath ten pounds.

  43. Verse 25,

  44. And they said unto him,

  45. Lord, he hath ten pounds.

  46. For I say unto you, Jesus said,

  47. that unto everyone which hath shall be given,

  48. and from him that hath not,

  49. even that he hath shall be taken away from him.

  50. But those mine enemies,

  51. which would not that I should reign over them,

  52. bring hither and slay them before me.

  53. So Jesus is going to give us this very kind of intense parable.

  54. And we're going to see exactly what he's talking about.

  55. But he really wants to remind us,

  56. there's a job to do until he comes.

  57. The call of the Christian life is not,

  58. hang on until Jesus shows up.

  59. Here's what it is.

  60. Occupy till I come.

  61. There's a job to do,

  62. and there's a calling that we must all follow.

  63. And that's what we're going to see here this morning.

  64. Let's ask him to bless our reading.

  65. Father, thank you for the word of God.

  66. Thankful that we have a copy.

  67. We can hold it in our own hands.

  68. We can even carry it in our pocket on our phones.

  69. It's so accessible to us.

  70. But Lord, I pray that our familiarity with the word of God

  71. would not hinder it from getting into our heart,

  72. into our lives.

  73. And I pray that you would do that this morning.

  74. That you would help us to see the truth

  75. and the reminder that you have called us all

  76. to be in your service.

  77. We are to occupy until you come.

  78. But I pray that there is someone here

  79. that doesn't know you,

  80. that today would be that day.

  81. And we ask this in your son's precious name.

  82. Amen.

  83. Thank you so much for standing.

  84. You may be seated.

  85. I try not to think back to my days in school very often

  86. because that means I have to go back to school in my mind.

  87. And I don't want to be there.

  88. You know, because it was one of those things.

  89. But I remember, like you did,

  90. the teacher would say this,

  91. and this was very dangerous.

  92. I need to step out of the class for just a few minutes

  93. and I'll be right back.

  94. Nobody get out of your seat.

  95. Nobody talk.

  96. Anybody remember that?

  97. But in every class you ever went,

  98. everybody just stayed quiet and stayed still

  99. and did absolutely what they were told.

  100. No.

  101. I mean, as soon as the door closed,

  102. I mean, you're like watching her walk to the door

  103. and you're like waiting for the door to close

  104. and you kind of hear her feet maybe walking down the hallway

  105. and as soon as that happens,

  106. somebody starts talking,

  107. somebody's turning around.

  108. I mean, it's an all-out spitwad fight

  109. or whatever it may be

  110. and somebody's walking across the classroom.

  111. I cannot confirm or deny,

  112. I juggled scissors.

  113. I just learned to juggle.

  114. And I thought,

  115. this is a great opportunity to show my classmates

  116. this unique skill.

  117. But just like in all the situations you experienced,

  118. as soon as I was juggling them,

  119. the door opened.

  120. And here comes the teacher

  121. and just like she promised,

  122. she would come back

  123. and what everybody was doing up to that point

  124. suddenly mattered.

  125. Why?

  126. Because the authority's back in the classroom now.

  127. The teacher's there as she's promised

  128. and we're reminded of that little illustration

  129. that just because the teacher left,

  130. it doesn't mean that the assignment disappeared.

  131. It doesn't mean that her instruction disappeared

  132. and it certainly didn't mean that she wasn't coming back.

  133. And as we come to Luke chapter 19

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  134. in this lengthy passage of scripture

  135. that we read just a moment ago,

  136. Jesus is dealing with something far more serious

  137. than a teacher leaving a classroom.

  138. Really what he's reminding them

  139. is he knows things they don't know.

  140. And now he's tried to explain it a couple of times,

  141. but they didn't want to hear it

  142. and they were missing it

  143. that Jesus was coming not to set up a kingdom,

  144. but he was coming

  145. and he was marching towards a cross.

  146. And by the time we're here in Luke chapter 19,

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  147. we're about a week or so away

  148. from the arrest and the betrayal

  149. and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

  150. And see, he knows

  151. that he's about to leave them for a time.

  152. It'd be in this time frame

  153. coming up very closely

  154. in John's gospel

  155. where he goes to the upper room

  156. and they're gonna celebrate Passover.

  157. We're gonna see that here in a moment,

  158. but he tells them,

  159. hey, I'm going away.

  160. And they're troubled by that.

  161. And that's where he gave them

  162. that famous verse in John 14,

  163. let not your heart be troubled.

  164. You believe in God,

  165. believe also in me.

  166. If I go away,

  167. I'm gonna come again.

  168. That's what he reminds them here.

  169. But before he goes,

  170. he's reminding his disciples

  171. and in turn reminding us

  172. that you're not just to hide up

  173. and hole up

  174. and hang out until I come.

  175. No, there's a job to be done.

  176. That God wants us to be involved

  177. in the work

  178. and he gives them something to do

  179. and he says,

  180. here's what I want you to do

  181. and I want to remind you,

  182. I am coming back.

  183. I love that it is well.

  184. The third verse is probably my favorite,

  185. but the fourth is right up with it.

  186. And we're reminded of that great truth

  187. that Jesus Christ is coming back.

  188. We look at our world

  189. and we think he's forgot about us.

  190. No, he has not.

  191. You think, well,

  192. why hasn't he come back?

  193. Why is he tearing his coming?

  194. Here's why.

  195. Because God so loved the world

  196. that he sent his only begotten son.

  197. And he's there.

  198. We are here to share the gospel

  199. and he's saying,

  200. this is what I want you to do.

  201. Occupy, get to work,

  202. do what I've called you to do.

  203. And I love hearing the gospel of Luke.

  204. He's done it a couple of times

  205. and it makes somewhat my job a little easier

  206. as I study the passage.

  207. Verse number 11,

  208. Jesus tells us exactly why he's telling this parable.

  209. Like, why did Jesus tell this story?

  210. Did it just come to the top of his head?

  211. No, he tells us that they're getting close to Jerusalem.

  212. They've been working their way there,

  213. but Jericho's very close.

  214. About 17 miles, you know,

  215. just a good 17 mile hike up the road to Jerusalem.

  216. But in those days, that's pretty close.

  217. And he's moving his way towards there

  218. and the excitement is building at the end of chapter number 18.

  219. There on the way to Jericho,

  220. he saw a blind man on the side of the road

  221. and his name was Bartimaeus.

  222. And he cried out and said,

  223. Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.

  224. And Jesus healed the blind man.

  225. Of course, the frenzy begins to build.

  226. He gets into the town

  227. and he sees a chief publican,

  228. a very rich man,

  229. a notorious sinner,

  230. the kingpin of Jericho named Zacchaeus,

  231. who's been extorting his own people.

  232. And he's up in a sycamore tree

  233. and Jesus comes to him and says,

  234. hey, I'm going to go to your house today.

  235. And Jesus completely changed Zacchaeus' life.

  236. And really the idea is there's just this buzz going around.

  237. Hey, did you hear that Bartimaeus can see?

  238. Did you hear that Zacchaeus got saved?

  239. I mean, what is going on here?

  240. And really they believe

  241. and they're beginning to see

  242. kind of from a skewed view

  243. that Jesus is the Messiah.

  244. And he is the Messiah.

  245. But they're thinking he's a political savior.

  246. And really the thought is

  247. they're kind of conversing amongst themselves.

  248. And you read the other gospel accounts,

  249. the disciples begin to argue

  250. who's the greatest

  251. and who's actually going to sit next to him

  252. when he sets his throne up in Jerusalem.

  253. And that's what they're talking about.

  254. And so the idea is they're just thinking,

  255. man, this is it.

  256. I mean, this is what we signed up for.

  257. Hey, this is why we left our boats.

  258. This is why I left my tax booth,

  259. Matthew may have thought.

  260. This is why we're following this man.

  261. Rome is going down.

  262. Jerusalem, Israel is going to be

  263. in its rightful place.

  264. And everything we thought was going to happen,

  265. it's here.

  266. But verse 11 says,

  267. Jesus said,

  268. I think you got your times wrong.

  269. Your calendar, your dates are off.

  270. Because what they did not understand

  271. that he was going away.

  272. And really from Luke 17,

  273. even to this spot,

  274. he's showing us this tension that we live in.

  275. The already, but the not yet.

  276. That the king had come.

  277. And Jesus Christ was the king.

  278. He already was.

  279. Don't misunderstand that.

  280. But he's coming again.

  281. So the question and the opportunity

  282. Jesus wants you to see

  283. is what are we going to do in that in between?

  284. How are we going to live for him

  285. while he's gone?

  286. Because while he's gone,

  287. we see here in this parable

  288. that he entrusts his servants

  289. with great responsibility.

  290. That he expects them to do something.

  291. See, they were so fixated

  292. on when the kingdom will come.

  293. And really, we're kind of the same way.

  294. We get so focused on that today

  295. that we forget that the actual real thought

  296. of the text is

  297. how do we live

  298. until he comes again?

  299. That's what he wants us to see.

  300. That's where he wants us to understand.

  301. And so here's the big idea

  302. I want us to kind of get a hold of

  303. in this passage

  304. is that the king will return.

  305. He is coming back

  306. and so we must faithfully use

  307. what he has entrusted to us

  308. until he comes.

  309. That is the main thought

  310. of this passage that we see.

  311. So here's the question

  312. I want us to answer

  313. as we walk through it.

  314. How should we live

  315. until the king returns?

  316. The first thing we see is this,

  317. number one,

  318. that we should live

  319. under the king's authority.

  320. We should live

  321. under the king's authority.

  322. Verse number 12

  323. in our text this morning,

  324. he said,

  325. therefore,

  326. a certain nobleman

  327. went to a far country

  328. to receive for himself

  329. a kingdom

  330. and to return.

  331. Now to us,

  332. it just seems like

  333. the start of a story.

  334. But really,

  335. to the original audience

  336. and to those hearers

  337. right there in Jericho,

  338. I mean,

  339. their mind would have

  340. immediately understood

  341. what he was talking about.

  342. Because really what Jesus

  343. is doing here

  344. is he's kind of taking

  345. a front page news article

  346. and applying it

  347. to their life.

  348. Because I don't want

  349. to bore you with history,

  350. but just to give an idea

  351. of what's going on here,

  352. about 30 years prior

  353. to this account,

  354. there was a man

  355. named Herod the Great.

  356. And he was not great.

  357. He was a horrible guy.

  358. You probably know him

  359. from the Christmas story.

  360. This would have been

  361. the Herod that would have

  362. ordered all of the babies

  363. two years and younger

  364. to be murdered.

  365. So he was the ruler

  366. of Judea at that time.

  367. And he was trying

  368. to stamp out Jesus Christ

  369. as a young child.

  370. Well, one of his sons,

  371. Archiralius,

  372. is now,

  373. became the ruler

  374. after Herod the Great died.

  375. You see that in Matthew

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  376. chapter 2

  377. when they come back,

  378. when Joseph and Mary

  379. and Jesus come back

  380. from Egypt,

  381. they hear that Herod's

  382. son's ruling

  383. so they go to Nazareth.

  384. So really,

  385. this man,

  386. what he did is

  387. when a ruler

  388. would take over

  389. a new area

  390. in this situation,

  391. they would have

  392. to go to Rome

  393. and they would have

  394. to be kind of confirmed

  395. by Caesar

  396. to make sure

  397. they would be

  398. in control.

  399. And while he was going,

  400. obviously the people

  401. didn't care for him.

  402. They didn't like his dad.

  403. His dad was a murderer.

  404. He used the Jews.

  405. This man,

  406. when he kind of

  407. got control,

  408. he kind of killed

  409. about 2,000 or 3,000 Jews

  410. according to the historians

  411. just to kind of let them know,

  412. hey, I'm in charge.

  413. So obviously,

  414. they weren't real keen

  415. on this man ruling.

  416. So as he made his way

  417. to Rome,

  418. the people here

  419. in Judea

  420. sent a delegation

  421. and said,

  422. hey, we don't want

  423. this guy ruling over us.

  424. And we can see this

  425. throughout history.

  426. But what Jesus is doing

  427. is he's using

  428. this political situation

  429. that would have

  430. piqued their interest

  431. because Archiraglius

  432. would have ruled

  433. right in the area

  434. of Jericho.

  435. So this wasn't

  436. some long-distance story.

  437. Many of these people

  438. would have been alive

  439. that heard this story.

  440. And they would have

  441. recognized it,

  442. but he's teaching them

  443. a much bigger truth

  444. that he's not liking himself

  445. to this wicked ruler,

  446. but he's reminding,

  447. hey, the king

  448. is going to go away.

  449. And he's going

  450. to return

  451. and he is going

  452. to rule

  453. and what are we

  454. going to do there

  455. in the meantime?

  456. But we see in verse

  457. number 14

  458. that the citizens

  459. of this parable

  460. wanted nothing

  461. to do with the king.

  462. They simply

  463. don't just dislike

  464. certain things he does.

  465. They reject his authority

  466. altogether.

  467. Notice what they say

  468. in verse number 14.

  469. We will not have

  470. this man

  471. to reign over us.

  472. And I would submit

  473. to you that that's

  474. still the attitude

  475. of the world

  476. in general

  477. towards Jesus Christ.

  478. There's a lot of people

  479. that will agree with you

  480. that Jesus Christ

  481. was a great teacher.

  482. He was a good

  483. moral teacher.

  484. I mean,

  485. you look at the Beatitudes

  486. and you look at the

  487. Sermon on the Mount

  488. and you look at

  489. certain things

  490. that Jesus taught.

  491. I mean,

  492. they will agree with that

  493. and say,

  494. man,

  495. these are really good

  496. ways to live by.

  497. I mean,

  498. we should really employ

  499. the golden rule

  500. in our life.

  501. They may appreciate

  502. his compassion

  503. and his care

  504. for the poor

  505. and those in need.

  506. And they may even

  507. quote some of his words.

  508. But the reality is

  509. when it comes to

  510. the authority

  511. of Jesus Christ,

  512. when it comes to

  513. his right to rule,

  514. when it comes to

  515. his right to tell us

  516. and to command us

  517. how to live,

  518. the majority

  519. still cries today,

  520. we will not have

  521. this man rule

  522. on our lives.

  523. And really,

  524. he's making this point

  525. and he's showing them

  526. this truth

  527. that he's even

  528. experiencing to this point

  529. and is continuing

  530. until today.

  531. That rejecting the king,

  532. it does not remove

  533. the king.

  534. They would have

  535. understood this.

  536. They would have been

  537. living under the rule

  538. of Herod

  539. and Archalias

  540. and they would have

  541. understood these

  542. difficult things

  543. and just because

  544. they didn't like him

  545. doesn't mean

  546. that he wasn't the king.

  547. And Jesus is making

  548. a much deeper

  549. spiritual application

  550. that people may

  551. refuse his authority

  552. and they still do today.

  553. But let me just

  554. remind you,

  555. refusing his authority

  556. does not cancel

  557. his authority.

  558. That he is still

  559. in control

  560. and his physical presence,

  561. his physical absence,

  562. I should say,

  563. does not cancel it either.

  564. Yes, we don't see

  565. Jesus physically

  566. on this earth anymore,

  567. but we will one day.

  568. He is going to come back,

  569. he's going to set foot

  570. on the Mount of Olives

  571. and he is going to set up

  572. a kingdom on this earth.

  573. But I just want to remind you

  574. that he's still in control,

  575. that he still is the king

  576. and he still calls us

  577. to live under his authority.

  578. You say,

  579. well, what's his authority?

  580. It's right here.

  581. It's his word.

  582. It's what he's called us

  583. to live by.

  584. And let me just remind you,

  585. when he comes,

  586. Revelation chapter 19,

    Revelation 19:16

  587. verse 16 reminds us,

  588. he's coming with this name,

  589. King of Kings

  590. and Lord of Lords.

  591. When he was crucified

  592. and buried

  593. and he rose again,

  594. he didn't lose that title.

  595. He always was,

  596. he always is,

  597. and he always will be.

  598. And we must live

  599. under that authority.

  600. But that creates a question.

  601. If he is going away

  602. and they're dealing with,

  603. this is the disciples

  604. who are thinking,

  605. this is not how I thought

  606. it was going to go,

  607. but if he is going away,

  608. what are we supposed to do?

  609. I think the question

  610. still applies to us today.

  611. Since Jesus isn't here,

  612. we know he's coming again.

  613. Scripture makes that plain

  614. throughout the New Testament.

  615. What are we to do

  616. while he's gone?

  617. I think we see this.

  618. Number two,

  619. we are to invest

  620. what the king

  621. has entrusted to us.

  622. We're to invest

  623. what he has entrusted

  624. to us.

  625. I mean,

  626. verse number 13

  627. is a very simple command.

  628. Jesus calls his servants,

  629. and really,

  630. I mean,

  631. this man calls his servants,

  632. this noble man,

  633. and delivered unto them

  634. ten pounds,

  635. and said unto them,

  636. Occupy till I come.

  637. Now,

  638. we may hear the word occupy,

  639. and we may think,

  640. well,

  641. that means just to sit there.

  642. You are occupying your chair.

  643. I mean,

  644. some of you,

  645. you even occupy it

  646. when you're not here.

  647. You leave a blanket,

  648. and you leave your Bible.

  649. You're like,

  650. I'm coming back tonight,

  651. and this is my seat.

  652. I'm occupying this seat.

  653. You know,

  654. like nobody touches my stuff.

  655. You occupy

  656. is hold your place.

  657. You ever been in a parking lot,

  658. and you're trying to find

  659. a really good parking spot,

  660. and one opens up,

  661. somebody jumps out of the car,

  662. and they go and stand

  663. in that parking spot

  664. for that other person?

  665. That's wrong.

  666. They're occupying that spot.

  667. We might think of it

  668. as waiting,

  669. but that's not what

  670. Jesus means here.

  671. The idea here

  672. to occupy till I come

  673. has this thought.

  674. Do business.

  675. Get to work.

  676. Use what I have entrusted

  677. to you.

  678. Do the work

  679. of the Lord,

  680. and as believers,

  681. I mentioned already,

  682. we're not called

  683. just to hold on

  684. until Jesus comes.

  685. No,

  686. it's pretty simple.

  687. We are to occupy

  688. till He comes.

  689. We are to get to work

  690. until He comes,

  691. and we see here

  692. in verse 13

  693. that each of these servants

  694. receives 10 pounds

  695. or a mina.

  696. Maybe your Bible says

  697. the parable

  698. of the 10 minas,

  699. and really what it is,

  700. is it's a significant

  701. amount of money.

  702. Three months wages.

  703. I think we'd all sign up

  704. and say,

  705. hey,

  706. if you're going to give me

  707. three months wages,

  708. go ahead and do that.

  709. I'm for that.

  710. I want us to understand,

  711. it's not like He said,

  712. I'll be back tomorrow.

  713. No,

  714. it's a very significant

  715. amount of money

  716. that He entrusted with them,

  717. and He entrusted all of them

  718. with the same amount,

  719. by the way.

  720. This is not the parable

  721. of the talents.

  722. This is different than that.

  723. Now,

  724. some of us have

  725. different talents

  726. and different things

  727. and we use them for the Lord,

  728. but this particular thing

  729. that Jesus is showing us

  730. is we all have the same amount

  731. and what are we going to do with it?

  732. And the emphasis is very clear

  733. in verse number 13

  734. that He entrusted them

  735. to do something

  736. with what He gave them.

  737. They had a job to do.

  738. And I want to just remind us

  739. that ultimately,

  740. everything that you have

  741. in your life,

  742. everything that I have

  743. in my life,

  744. has been entrusted to me

  745. by God.

  746. Everything.

  747. Your time.

  748. I know in Brother Caleb's

  749. Sunday school class,

  750. they're going through

  751. stewarding your life

  752. and it's just a reminder

  753. that we aren't just

  754. to steward our finances.

  755. We think of that

  756. just as money

  757. and this parable

  758. has to deal with money.

  759. No,

  760. but we are called

  761. to steward our time,

  762. our resources,

  763. our opportunities

  764. to share the gospel

  765. at school and at work

  766. or wherever God may

  767. allow us to do so.

  768. We are to steward

  769. the influence

  770. that He's given us.

  771. We may have relationships

  772. that we can speak into.

  773. I have opportunities

  774. to share.

  775. We have relationships

  776. that we are to steward

  777. or our spouses

  778. and our children

  779. and our coworkers

  780. and our friends

  781. and here's what we are to do.

  782. We are to use everything

  783. God has given for Him

  784. and not for us.

  785. Because here's what

  786. we're prone to do.

  787. Here's what I'm prone to do.

  788. Hey, this is my stuff

  789. and I'm going to do

  790. what I want to do with it.

  791. Okay, I'm making sure

  792. I'm not the only one.

  793. You know,

  794. I worked hard for this.

  795. Hey, I deserve this.

  796. And listen,

  797. isn't that a different

  798. mess for a different night?

  799. God's not against you

  800. doing things

  801. and having nice stuff.

  802. But He wants us to understand

  803. that everything we have,

  804. every good gift

  805. and every perfect gift

  806. is from above.

  807. And it comes down

  808. from the Father of lights

  809. and He gives us

  810. this opportunity.

  811. But most importantly

  812. what He gives us

  813. is the gospel itself.

  814. I mean, what a joy.

  815. I mean,

  816. I keep going back to it

  817. because it just makes

  818. my heart want to burst.

  819. But singing it as well,

  820. the fact I can sing that song

  821. and know it's true

  822. in my life

  823. is an amazing thing.

  824. What a joy

  825. to know who Jesus is

  826. and what He's done.

  827. What a joy it is

  828. to experience His love

  829. and His mercy

  830. every single day.

  831. You don't have to come to church

  832. and just feel the mercy of God.

  833. No, I love what the psalmist says,

  834. daily He loadeth me down

  835. with benefits.

  836. I mean, we're so blessed

  837. we don't even realize

  838. how blessed we are.

  839. And the fact that we know that

  840. and the fact that we experience that

  841. and we know that message

  842. changed our life

  843. from darkness to light.

  844. We were on a road

  845. and we had no hope

  846. and life was falling apart

  847. but somehow,

  848. in some way,

  849. somebody invited you to church,

  850. somebody shared the gospel

  851. and it changed everything.

  852. The fact you know that

  853. is a wonderful thing.

  854. But here's the question.

  855. What are you doing with it?

  856. It is the most precious thing

  857. that you've ever experienced

  858. in your life.

  859. Jesus says,

  860. you better not put it in a napkin.

  861. You better not hide it.

  862. No, you better,

  863. you better,

  864. sorry that bothered me right there.

  865. You better,

  866. you better do something with it.

  867. See, Jesus didn't say,

  868. preserve until I come.

  869. Sometimes I think our church

  870. has become like a little

  871. history museum.

  872. Look at all the things

  873. God used to do.

  874. Man, remember when God did this

  875. and God did that?

  876. Listen, I'm so thankful

  877. God's done some great things

  878. in Central Baptist Church

  879. throughout the years.

  880. But we're not here

  881. to be a museum

  882. in Cook County.

  883. No, no, we're here

  884. not to preserve

  885. until Jesus comes.

  886. We're here to occupy.

  887. We're here to put to work

  888. what God has given us

  889. whether it is resources

  890. or it is time

  891. or it is prayer

  892. or it is the gospel

  893. in every situation.

  894. Simply put,

  895. here's what he's saying

  896. in verse 13.

  897. Use what the king

  898. has placed in your hand

  899. for the interest

  900. of the king.

  901. Not for your self-interest.

  902. Not for your own gain.

  903. Not for those things.

  904. And that's the difference

  905. between ownership

  906. and stewardship.

  907. I mean, an owner says,

  908. hey, this is mine.

  909. What do I want to do with it?

  910. But a steward says this,

  911. hey, this belongs to him.

  912. What does he want me

  913. to do with it?

  914. How does he want me

  915. to use it?

  916. Where does he want me

  917. to invest it?

  918. And that's why the wording

  919. is so important

  920. in verse number 16.

  921. Notice what the first servant says.

  922. Then came the first saying,

  923. Lord, thy pound

  924. hath gained 10 pounds.

  925. You know what we see here?

  926. The servant was in possession.

  927. The master gave it to him

  928. before he left.

  929. He said,

  930. here, I'm giving you

  931. these 10 pounds.

  932. I'm giving you this money.

  933. I want you to use it.

  934. I want you to occupy.

  935. And when he comes back,

  936. he didn't say,

  937. hey, Lord,

  938. look what I did

  939. with all my money.

  940. He said,

  941. thy pound,

  942. thy money,

  943. what you entrusted to me,

  944. I have used it for you.

  945. It was always the master's.

  946. It was never his.

  947. It never belonged to him.

  948. And that changes the way

  949. we look at a lot of things

  950. in our life.

  951. That's not your paycheck.

  952. That's not your children.

  953. I know that's tough

  954. for us to hear.

  955. No, they're just gifts

  956. from God

  957. that he has entrusted us

  958. to use them

  959. for the furtherance

  960. of his kingdom.

  961. And what we notice

  962. in verse number 16

  963. is this servant

  964. had simply just been faithful

  965. with what he'd been given.

  966. And one day,

  967. he's going to ask us

  968. what he did with it,

  969. what we did with it.

  970. How we used it

  971. for his glory.

  972. We see in verse number 18,

  973. the second comes.

  974. And he said,

  975. likewise unto him.

  976. He said,

  977. be thou over five cities.

  978. He invested

  979. what God had given him.

  980. And here's the point

  981. of these first two servants.

  982. That faithfulness matters.

  983. It really does.

  984. I mean,

  985. think about people

  986. God has used in your life.

  987. They're probably going to have

  988. this characteristic.

  989. They were just faithful to God.

  990. Wasn't some flash in the pan thing.

  991. No, they were there

  992. every time you went

  993. to Sunday school.

  994. They were there

  995. teaching that class.

  996. They were there

  997. in children's church.

  998. Your parents were there

  999. and you had that opportunity.

  1000. Maybe the bus came

  1001. and picked you up.

  1002. It was just people

1003. that God placed in your life

  1004. and they weren't flashy

1005. and they weren't about themselves.

  1006. They were just faithful.

  1007. They couldn't do a whole lot

  1008. but they just did

1009. what God wanted them to do.

1010. And that's all he requires.

  1011. And what we see

  1012. is not only

  1013. does faithfulness matter

  1014. but it's rewarded.

1015. In both of these situations

  1016. the nobleman says,

  1017. hey, because you're faithful

1018. I'm going to put you

1019. in charge of ten cities.

  1020. That's a pretty good

  1021. return on investment.

  1022. Ten pounds,

  1023. three months wages.

  1024. Now you're in control

  1025. of all these cities.

  1026. The idea is this.

  1027. Sometimes we think

  1028. faithfulness only counts

  1029. if it looks impressive.

  1030. Faithfulness doesn't,

  1031. a large ministry

  1032. doesn't mean faithfulness.

  1033. Great influence,

  1034. a lot of followers,

  1035. got all these followers

  1036. on TikTok and Instagram,

  1037. that doesn't mean

  1038. you're faithful.

  1039. Faithfulness is not something

  1040. that everybody notices.

1041. Faithfulness is what God notices.

  1042. Faithfulness is doing

1043. what God has called you to do.

1044. Where he has placed you

  1045. to serve.

  1046. Notice what Jesus says

  1047. in verse 17.

1048. Look at this little phrase.

1049. Because thou hast been faithful

  1050. in very little.

  1051. I love that.

  1052. Don't despise

  1053. the little things

1054. that God has put in your hands.

1055. You know, I think sometimes

1056. we can get so frustrated.

1057. Well, God, if you just

  1058. give me more

  1059. I'd be faithful.

  1060. Lord, I mean,

  1061. I can't do much with this.

1062. No, here's what you can do.

  1063. You can be faithful.

1064. That's what he's called you to do.

  1065. Maybe you don't have

  1066. the opportunity

  1067. to do certain things,

  1068. but maybe it's just

  1069. that conversation

  1070. with somebody

  1071. who's seeking Jesus.

1072. It can be had over lunch

  1073. at work

  1074. just multiple weeks.

  1075. Somebody asking

  1076. for the truth.

  1077. Maybe it's that child

  1078. you're raising.

  1079. Listen, that's kingdom work.

  1080. You are called

  1081. to instill

  1082. the truth

1083. of the word of God

  1084. into their life.

  1085. Listen,

1086. not everybody gets to see it,

  1087. but the Lord knows.

  1088. The Lord's watching.

  1089. We have some teachers

  1090. in here,

  1091. whether you're

  1092. a Sunday school teacher

  1093. or a school teacher,

  1094. having the opportunity

  1095. to speak truth

  1096. into people's lives.

  1097. Listen, God sees that.

  1098. Maybe God's giving you

  1099. an opportunity

  1100. to disciple somebody.

  1101. Maybe he's giving you

  1102. some resources

  1103. that you quietly use

1104. for the kingdom of God.

  1105. And God sees

  1106. just those ordinary days

  1107. that you live faithfully

  1108. to him.

  1109. And you think,

  1110. is any of this

  1111. making a difference?

  1112. Let me remind you,

  1113. he sees it.

1114. And he's going to tell us

1115. one day we've been faithful.

  1116. You've been faithful

  1117. with very little.

  1118. Look what you have.

  1119. Welcome.

  1120. Well done,

1121. thou good and faithful servant.

  1122. I'm so thankful

  1123. that the king

  1124. sees faithfulness.

1125. That's what he calls us to do.

  1126. And that's important

  1127. as we await

  1128. the return of Christ

1129. because we don't have to,

1130. we shouldn't have to dread it.

  1131. We shouldn't dread

1132. that the king is coming back.

  1133. I know some people

  1134. start looking

1135. at the book of Revelation

  1136. and they get scared.

  1137. They think,

  1138. I don't want to be,

  1139. I don't want to see.

1140. No, I want to be here

  1141. when Jesus comes back.

1142. I want to be like,

1143. I want to be like

  1144. the apostle Paul.

1145. He thought he was going

  1146. to be alive

  1147. when Jesus came back.

1148. I hope when the Lord

  1149. takes us up

1150. to be in the air,

  1151. I'm no longer afraid

  1152. of heights.

1153. That's got to go away, right?

  1154. I mean,

  1155. I can't find anybody

  1156. like, Lord, please.

  1157. I mean,

1158. I've prayed that once or twice.

  1159. I'm like, I hope I'm not

  1160. afraid of heights.

  1161. I'll just pass out

  1162. on the way up

  1163. and miss everything.

  1164. That would be awful.

  1165. Listen,

  1166. don't dread

1167. the return of the king.

  1168. But you know why

1169. you can dread it sometimes

  1170. even as Christians?

  1171. Because you know

  1172. you're not investing

1173. what he's invested in you.

  1174. There was times

  1175. growing up,

  1176. I wasn't super keen

1177. on my parents coming back

  1178. because I didn't do anything

1179. they asked me to do

  1180. while they were gone.

  1181. Because they'll say,

1182. hey, when I come back

1183. I want your room picked up

1184. and I want the kitchen cleaned up.

  1185. I'm like, alright.

1186. And then I hear the garage,

  1187. I'm like, uh-oh.

1188. You know why I dreaded it?

  1189. Because I wasn't doing

1190. what they had asked me to do.

1191. But when we are doing

1192. what God has asked us to do,

  1193. when we're faithful

  1194. in the little things,

  1195. we can look forward

  1196. to his return.

  1197. Listen,

  1198. faithfulness gives us

  1199. a reason to anticipate

  1200. the king,

  1201. not fear him.

  1202. So here's a question for you.

  1203. Are you using

  1204. what Christ has entrusted

  1205. to you?

  1206. Are you just trying

  1207. to preserve it?

  1208. Are you investing

1209. what he's invested in you?

1210. Are you using your life

  1211. for his interest?

  1212. For his kingdom?

  1213. For his cause?

1214. See, we see the first

  1215. two servants,

  1216. they were very active.

1217. They took what the master

  1218. gave them

1219. and they put it to work.

  1220. But here in these

  1221. closing verses,

  1222. in verses 20 through 27,

  1223. we see another servant

  1224. that wasn't as proactive.

  1225. And it brings us

  1226. to this final reminder

  1227. in these verses.

  1228. Number three is this.

1229. is that we should expect

  1230. to give an account.

  1231. We should expect

  1232. to give an account.

1233. Look at verse number 20.

  1234. And another came saying,

  1235. Lord, behold,

  1236. here is thy pound

  1237. which I have kept

1238. laid up in a napkin.

  1239. I think he was

  1240. very enthusiastic,

1241. at least in the way

  1242. he said it.

1243. He was trying to kind of,

  1244. you know,

1245. put lipstick on a pig,

  1246. so to speak.

1247. Lord, look what I did.

1248. I kept it all pretty

  1249. and shiny.

  1250. Nobody even knew

  1251. it was here.

  1252. I mean,

  1253. at first glance,

  1254. it doesn't sound terrible.

  1255. He still has it.

  1256. He didn't spend it.

  1257. He didn't lose it.

1258. But when we keep reading here

  1259. and we notice

  1260. that the master,

  1261. the nobleman,

1262. was not pleased at all.

  1263. Why?

  1264. Because this truth

  1265. that's running

  1266. through this text

  1267. is that preservation

  1268. is not the same

  1269. as faithfulness.

  1270. The master did not

  1271. give this man money

  1272. to keep it safe.

  1273. He gave him money

  1274. to use it,

  1275. to invest it,

  1276. to move the business

  1277. along further.

  1278. In verse number 21,

  1279. the servant explains

  1280. why he did this.

  1281. He said,

  1282. For I feared thee,

  1283. because thou art

  1284. an austere man.

1285. We don't use that word

  1286. a lot,

1287. but it carries this idea

  1288. of stern

  1289. and exacting

  1290. and harsh.

1291. Really what we see here

  1292. is this man's inactivity.

  1293. It really reveals

1294. his view of the master.

  1295. That he sees

  1296. his nobleman,

  1297. he sees this king

  1298. through fear

  1299. and suspicion.

  1300. He's essentially

  1301. saying this,

  1302. Well, I didn't really

  1303. trust you.

  1304. I feel like I'm better

  1305. with my things

  1306. than you are.

  1307. Ever thought that

  1308. with the Lord?

  1309. Lord, I know how

  1310. to invest this money.

  1311. I watched a YouTube video.

  1312. I mean,

  1313. sometimes that's how

1314. we think in our life.

  1315. I didn't really

  1316. trust you.

  1317. He's thinking,

  1318. Well, I thought

  1319. you were harsh

  1320. and I was afraid

  1321. what might happen

  1322. so I did nothing.

  1323. But nothing

  1324. in this parable

  1325. suggests

  1326. that the master

  1327. actually deserves

  1328. this description.

  1329. In fact,

  1330. we just saw

  1331. the generosity

  1332. of this master.

  1333. He gave 10 pounds

  1334. and they did

1335. what they were supposed to.

1336. He gave him 10 cities.

1337. He gave him 5 cities.

  1338. That's the type

  1339. of master we serve.

  1340. One that is loving

  1341. and kind

  1342. and rewards

  1343. far beyond

1344. what any of us deserve.

  1345. So the servant's view

  1346. here is not based

  1347. in reality.

1348. And let me just remind you,

  1349. a wrong view

  1350. of the king,

  1351. it produces

  1352. an unfaithful life.

  1353. A.W. Tozer

  1354. said it like this,

  1355. Nothing twists

  1356. and deforms

  1357. the soul

  1358. more than a low

  1359. or unworthy

  1360. conception of God.

  1361. God doesn't

  1362. respond

  1363. and act

  1364. and treat us

  1365. and do business

  1366. like somebody we know.

  1367. No,

  1368. he's perfect

  1369. and holy

  1370. and just

  1371. and he knows

  1372. what he's doing

  1373. and he's given us

  1374. the opportunity

  1375. and that's exactly

  1376. what we see here

  1377. is this servant's

  1378. view of the master

  1379. affected how he lived

  1380. while the master

  1381. was away.

1382. And we have to be careful

1383. not to fall in that trap.

  1384. That we know

  1385. who God is.

  1386. The Bible

  1387. makes it very clear

  1388. that he is high

  1389. and he's holy

1390. and he's all these things

  1391. and before we rush

  1392. to judgment,

  1393. we must make sure

  1394. that the same

1395. does not happen to us.

  1396. If you see God

  1397. as only harsh

  1398. and distant

  1399. and impossible

  1400. to please,

  1401. you're probably

  1402. going to spend

  1403. your life hiding

  1404. instead of actually serving.

  1405. And if we forget

  1406. his goodness

  1407. and we forget

  1408. his grace

  1409. and generosity

  1410. and his faithfulness,

  1411. we can begin

  1412. treating obedience

  1413. like a burden

  1414. instead of a privilege.

  1415. Listen,

  1416. it's a privilege

  1417. to obey God.

  1418. It is a privilege

  1419. to serve.

  1420. It is a privilege

  1421. to do the work

  1422. that the Lord

1423. has called us to do.

  1424. And in verse 22

  1425. and verse 23,

1426. we notice the master's response.

1427. And he said unto him,

1428. Out of thy own mouth

  1429. will I judge thee,

  1430. thou wicked servant.

  1431. Really what he's saying

  1432. in these verses,

  1433. we won't take time

  1434. to read them

1435. for the sake of time,

  1436. but what the king

  1437. is saying here

1438. is if you really believe

  1439. what you just said,

  1440. why didn't you just

1441. at least put it in the bank?

1442. I could have at least

  1443. got some interest

1444. when I showed back up.

  1445. Really what he's saying

  1446. is your own words

  1447. are exposing

  1448. how you're living.

1449. They don't even hold up.

  1450. It's a terrible excuse.

  1451. And in verse 24

  1452. and verse 25,

  1453. the king takes

  1454. his money,

  1455. the one pound

  1456. that he had,

  1457. the one mina

  1458. that he had,

  1459. and gives it

  1460. to the servant

  1461. that had ten.

1462. And you hear the gasp

  1463. in the crowd say,

  1464. you can't do that.

  1465. He can do anything

  1466. he wants.

  1467. He's the king.

  1468. But we've seen

  1469. throughout this

  1470. that he's not there

1471. just to keep his thumb

  1472. on us.

  1473. No, he's a loving king.

  1474. He cares.

  1475. He wants us

  1476. to be involved.

  1477. He's given us

  1478. an opportunity

  1479. to be involved

  1480. in the work.

1481. And then he gives us

  1482. this great principle

  1483. in verse 26,

1484. for I say unto you

  1485. that unto everyone

  1486. which hath

  1487. shall be given,

  1488. and from him

  1489. that hath not,

  1490. even that he hath

  1491. shall be taken

  1492. away from him.

  1493. Here's what Jesus

  1494. is saying

  1495. as he closes out

  1496. this parable.

1497. is that when we're faithful

  1498. it leads to

  1499. greater stewardship.

1500. The more that we're faithful

  1501. with the things

  1502. that God gives us,

1503. he's going to give us

  1504. more opportunities.

  1505. This is not some

  1506. wealth, health,

  1507. and prosperity gospel.

  1508. That's not what

  1509. Jesus is saying.

  1510. But he is saying

  1511. if you're faithful

  1512. with things,

  1513. God's going to give

  1514. faithful people

  1515. opportunities to serve.

  1516. But when we're faithless,

  1517. when we're fruitless,

  1518. here's what it does,

  1519. it leads to loss.

  1520. God's not going to

  1521. keep giving us things

1522. if we're not using it.

  1523. He didn't give you

  1524. all those gifts

  1525. we talked about earlier

1526. for you to hoard them,

  1527. to save them,

  1528. to store them.

1529. He gave them to you

  1530. to use them.

  1531. You know,

  1532. I see people

1533. that buy all these shoes

  1534. and some of you

  1535. may be sneakerheads.

  1536. They buy all these

  1537. awesome shoes

  1538. and they put them

  1539. in boxes with lights

  1540. and they put them

  1541. in their closet.

  1542. I was like,

  1543. that's cool,

  1544. but I thought

  1545. you were supposed

  1546. to wear shoes.

1547. We can't wear these shoes

  1548. because they're super cool

  1549. and they're super expensive.

  1550. What's the point

  1551. of a shoe then?

  1552. Set in a box?

  1553. Listen,

  1554. I don't know how

  1555. Christians live their life.

  1556. They got the coolest

  1557. thing in the world

  1558. but they're just going

1559. to sit in a box

  1560. in their closet

  1561. and they're going

  1562. to put it under

  1563. their arm

  1564. when they come

  1565. to church on Sunday.

  1566. It's the only time

  1567. they ever use it.

  1568. They only wear shoes

  1569. on special occasions.

1570. We can only use this

  1571. on special occasions.

  1572. No,

1573. we need to live it

  1574. every single day

  1575. of our life.

  1576. See,

1577. I want to remind us

  1578. this is not just

  1579. a fictional story.

  1580. It keeps coming up

  1581. over and over again

  1582. and Jesus reminds us

  1583. that one day

1584. the king's going to ask us

1585. what we did with it.

1586. He asked all of his servants,

  1587. what'd you do?

1588. He's not going to ask you

1589. what does somebody else do?

  1590. Sometimes we get

  1591. kind of cornered

  1592. and we say,

  1593. well,

  1594. they didn't do it.

  1595. You're not going to

1596. give an account for them.

  1597. You're going to give

1598. an account for your life

  1599. and what you've done

  1600. with what God

  1601. has given you.

  1602. I mean,

  1603. is there anything

  1604. in your life

  1605. that you're leaving

  1606. unused for him?

  1607. A relationship,

  1608. an opportunity,

  1609. some time,

  1610. the gospel?

  1611. But the parable

  1612. doesn't just end

  1613. with the servants.

1614. Look at verse number 27.

1615. This is a tough verse

  1616. to read.

  1617. But those mine enemies

  1618. which would not

1619. that I should reign over them

  1620. bring hither

  1621. and slay them

  1622. before me.

  1623. That sounds

  1624. really severe

  1625. and Jesus intends

1626. for it to sound severe.

  1627. Because the return

  1628. of the king,

  1629. when Jesus comes again,

  1630. he's not just coming

  1631. to bring a reward,

1632. it will also bring judgment.

  1633. What kind of God

  1634. would do that?

1635. The same kind of God

  1636. that would send

  1637. his only son

  1638. the first time

1639. and to die on the cross

  1640. for my sin

  1641. and for your sin.

  1642. Because the Bible

  1643. is clear that all

  1644. have sinned

  1645. and come short

1646. of the glory of God.

  1647. See, the first time

  1648. we already saw

  1649. in Luke chapter 19,

    Luke 19:10

  1650. verse 10,

  1651. here's why he came,

1652. to seek and to save

  1653. that which was lost.

  1654. So there will be

  1655. no excuse.

1656. He has made a way.

1657. He has paid the debt.

  1658. All of the things

1659. have been taken care of.

  1660. That's the king

  1661. that we serve.

  1662. But some are going

  1663. to outright reject

  1664. that king.

  1665. But it does not

  1666. change the truth

1667. that he is the king.

1668. And because he is just,

1669. he will have to punish sin

  1670. even though he took

1671. the debt on his own body

  1672. in that tree

  1673. as the apostle Paul

  1674. reminds us,

  1675. that there is going

  1676. to be severe judgment.

  1677. And those that reject

  1678. his rule

  1679. will answer to him.

  1680. So this parable

  1681. is not just,

1682. well, we need to use

  1683. our talents better.

  1684. I think the thrust

  1685. of this entire parable

  1686. is this,

  1687. what are you doing

  1688. with the king?

  1689. Some reject him

  1690. altogether.

1691. Some claim to serve him

  1692. but really waste

  1693. what he's entrusted

  1694. to them.

  1695. And others faithfully

  1696. serve him

  1697. looking forward

  1698. to his return.

  1699. So as we close

  1700. this morning,

1701. I just want to ask you

  1702. this,

  1703. what attitude

  1704. characterizes your life?

  1705. The king is coming.

  1706. He will come again.

1707. You don't have to dread it.

  1708. You can look forward

  1709. to it.

  1710. In fact, you should.

  1711. I love what John

  1712. says at the end

  1713. of Revelation.

  1714. Even so,

  1715. come quickly.

  1716. Come quickly,

  1717. Lord Jesus.

  1718. See, we started there

  1719. in verse number 11.

  1720. And the people

  1721. thought the question

1722. was when is the kingdom

  1723. going to appear?

  1724. But what Jesus does

  1725. in this text

  1726. is he redirects

  1727. their attention.

  1728. And it should be

  1729. the same for us.

  1730. Yes, the king

  1731. has gone away.

  1732. He's been away

  1733. for a while now

  1734. and the world mocks

  1735. and he's been gone

  1736. 2,000 years.

  1737. But he's given us

  1738. a great responsibility.

  1739. Go ye therefore

  1740. into all the world

  1741. and preach the gospel.

  1742. That's why we're having

  1743. a missions month.

  1744. That's why we brought

  1745. missionaries in.

  1746. That's why we want

  1747. to take the gospel

  1748. to Hong Kong

  1749. and check via.

  1750. That's why

  1751. Brother Zach and

  1752. Miss Cherish

  1753. are taking the gospel

  1754. to Nakona

  1755. and to see opportunities

  1756. there for people

  1757. to know the Lord.

1758. And so the big question

1759. I want you to answer

  1760. this morning

  1761. that we must answer

  1762. in our heart,

  1763. what am I doing

  1764. until he comes again?

  1765. That's really where

  1766. he's pulling us to.

1767. But because until he comes

1768. there is work to do.

  1769. There are people

  1770. that need the gospel.

  1771. There are opportunities

  1772. that he is placing

1773. in front of your life

  1774. right now.

  1775. You have some

  1776. at school tomorrow.

  1777. You have some

  1778. at the lunch table

  1779. at work.

  1780. Hey, around the water

  1781. cooler tomorrow.

  1782. There are resources

  1783. God has called you

  1784. to steward.

  1785. And he invites you.

  1786. There's cards in your

1787. chair back in front of me.

  1788. We'll talk about it

1789. next week a little more.

  1790. But faith promise.

  1791. Just get involved

  1792. in getting the gospel

  1793. across the world.

1794. There are people to love.

  1795. There's a church to serve.

  1796. There's a king to obey.

1797. And he just reminds us

  1798. over and over.

  1799. And I'll leave you

  1800. with this thought.

  1801. Until he comes

  1802. be faithful

1803. with what he has placed

  1804. in your hands.

1805. Because he is coming again.

1806. And would he find us

  1807. occupying,

  1808. serving,

  1809. doing the work

  1810. when he comes again.

  1811. Would you stand

  1812. with your heads bowed

  1813. and with your hands?
