  1. Good morning. Our passage today is in Isaiah chapter 8 and then up until 9 verse 7 which is on page 693 in the church bibles.

    Isaiah 8 chapter mention

  2. ! The Lord said to me, take a large scroll and write on it with an ordinary pen, Meher Shalal Hashbaz.

  3. So I called in Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jebrakiah as reliable witnesses for me.

  4. Then I made love to the prophetess and she conceived and gave birth to a son.

  5. And the Lord said to me, name him Meher Shalal Hashbaz.

  6. For before the boy knows how to say, my father or my mother, the wealth of Damascus and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.

  7. The Lord spoke to me again, because this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shaloha and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Romalia.

  8. Therefore the Lord is about to bring against them the mighty floodwaters of Euphrates.

  9. The king of Assyria with all his pomp, it will overflow all its channels, run over all its banks and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it.

  10. Passing through it and reaching up to the neck.

  11. Its outspread wings will cover the breadth of your land, Emmanuel.

  12. Raise the war cry, you nations, and be shattered.

  13. Listen, all you distant lands.

  14. Prepare for battle and be shattered.

  15. Prepare for battle and be shattered.

  16. Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted.

  17. Propose your plan, but it will not stand, for God is with us.

  18. This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me, warning me not to follow the way of this people.

  19. Do not call conspiracy everything this people calls a conspiracy.

  20. Do not fear what they fear and do not dread it.

  21. The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy.

  22. He is the one you are to fear.

  23. He is the one you are to dread.

  24. He will be a holy place for both Israel and Judah.

  25. And he will be a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.

  26. And for the people of Jerusalem, he will be a trap and a snare.

  27. Many of them will stumble.

  28. They will fall and be broken.

  29. They will be snared and captured.

  30. Bind up this testimony of warning and seal up God's instruction among my disciples.

  31. I will wait for the Lord who is hiding his face from the descendants of Jacob.

  32. I will put my trust in him.

  33. Here am I and the children the Lord has given me.

  34. We are signs and symbols in Israel from the Lord Almighty who dwells on Mount Zion.

  35. When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists who whisper and mutter,

  36. should not a people inquire of their God?

  37. Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?

  38. Consult God's instruction and the testimony of warning.

  39. If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.

  40. Distressed and hungry, they will roam through the land.

  41. When they are famished, they will become enraged and looking upwards will curse their king and their God.

  42. Then they will look towards the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom.

  43. They will be thrust into utter darkness.

  44. Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress.

  45. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali.

  46. But in the future he will honor Galilee and the nations by the way of the sea beyond the Jordan.

  47. The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.

  48. On those living in the land of deep darkness, a light has dawned.

  49. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy.

  50. They rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest,

  51. as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder.

  52. For as in the day of Midian's feast you have shattered the yoke that burdens them,

  53. the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor,

  54. every warrior's boot used in battle,

  55. and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning,

  56. will be fuel for the fire.

  57. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,

  58. and the government will be on his shoulders,

  59. and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

  60. Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  61. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.

  62. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom,

  63. establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness.

  64. From that time on and forever,

  65. the zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

  66. Amen.

  67. Great. Well, keep that passage open.

  68. We are in the book of Isaiah.

  69. We have been working our way through it.

  70. We have arrived at chapter 8.

  71. Let's pray and ask for the Lord's help as we come to his word.

  72. Let's pray.

  73. Father, we do thank you so much for your word to us.

  74. We want to thank you that we're not kind of scrabbling around in the dark,

  75. wondering what you might be like or what you might say,

  76. but that here together this morning, as your word is open,

  77. we get a chance to listen to you,

  78. to hear your word to us.

  79. Oh Lord, how we pray that you might make us good listeners

  80. to you and your word.

  81. Pray that you might help me to speak clearly and faithfully.

  82. And Lord, that by your spirit, you would be at work,

  83. opening our ears to hear and our hearts to trust.

  84. In Jesus' name we pray.

  85. Amen.

  86. Amen.

  87. Well, if you're a Christian this morning,

  88. what you need to understand is that you are in the minority.

  89. The minority.

  90. Probably not in this room, at least I don't think so.

  91. But almost certainly at work, you'll be in the minority.

  92. You're possibly in the minority in your family.

  93. And if you are at school, you will definitely be in the minority.

  94. I was trying to work out this week with a little help from the census,

  95. how many people in our neighborhood find themselves in a gospel church this morning.

  96. If you go to the census, I think it's about 35%, maybe a few more,

  97. call themselves Christians in our neighborhood.

  98. But to call yourself Christian doesn't necessarily really mean you are a Christian.

  99. It just means that's how you identify yourself.

  100. And very few actually mean much by it.

  101. I think if you add up the congregations in our community,

  102. kind of places where you would hear the good news about Jesus,

  103. and you divide that by the population of our community,

  104. times by 100, that's how you work out percentages, right?

  105. I think you will get to about 3%.

  106. 3%.

  107. Put it another way, 97% of people in Queen's Park and West Kilburn

  108. are somewhere else doing something else this morning,

  109. with little or no thought of being otherwise.

  110. Which means I think by any count, we are a minority.

  111. Now, it's possible that that's quite shocking.

  112. I think as Christians, we've become quite adept to just sort of inoculating ourselves

  113. from this idea that we're in the minority.

  114. We might cover up the detail in all sorts of ways.

  115. You might find that all of your friends are Christians,

  116. so you just imagine that actually everybody's a Christian,

  117. because all my friends are.

  118. You might go to the odd big conference,

  119. where it feels like you're part of something much bigger and much grander.

  120. If you follow the right feeds on social media,

  121. you might get the impression that there is something bigger and more impressive.

  122. You might even console yourself that 2 billion people around the world

  123. would call themselves Christians, and that's no small number, is it?

  124. But actually, there are 6 billion people in the world

  125. who would say they are not Christian.

  126. Because the truth is, being a Christian,

  127. a genuine I-believe-in-Jesus Christian,

  128. puts you this morning, if that's you, in a minority.

  129. And if you live in this neighbourhood, in this time,

  130. then it puts you in a very, very, very small minority.

  131. Now, I want to suggest that because that is true,

  132. Isaiah's book is of supreme relevance to us this morning.

  133. Isaiah is writing between 700 and 800 years before the birth of Christ

  134. in a setting where God's people are in a massive minority.

  135. Now, that's not just because Judah and Jerusalem,

  136. to whom he is speaking,

  137. are no longer the world superpower that they once were,

  138. although that is true, right?

  139. You will find in the weeks to come

  140. that King Ahaz has put himself in the pocket of the king of Assyria.

  141. And that's a bad place for him to be,

  142. and he never really recovers.

  143. And Israel, Judah, never really recovers.

  144. But also, it's because most of the people of Judah

  145. are only now really God's people in name,

  146. but not really in personal faith or trust in the Lord.

  147. They are Jews, they are the children of Abraham,

  148. but most of them do not trust the Lord.

  149. Most of them have the same hopes, the same aspirations,

  150. the same goals, and the same idols, even,

  151. as the world around them.

  152. And so God's people find themselves in a minority,

  153. not just in the world,

  154. but even in the people that would call themselves God's people.

  155. And that's why one of Isaiah's favorite words,

  156. and I know it's one of his favorite words,

  157. because he calls his oldest child this,

  158. is the word remnant.

  159. Remnant, that's what he calls the minority.

  160. It's a small remainder, a little slice,

  161. a small group of people amongst God's people

  162. who still actually trust the Lord.

  163. His oldest son is called Sher Jashub.

  164. He says,

  165. which means the remnant will return.

  166. We met him last week, if you were with us.

  167. Now, we'll return to those ideas in a few moments,

  168. but what I want to show you is that the passage

  169. that we're looking at this morning,

  170. it divides really helpfully into three parts,

  171. and we will work our way through them

  172. and see these ideas there.

  173. So in verses one to eight, in chapter eight,

  174. you get a kind of narrative account

  175. of what's happening at the time.

  176. In verses nine to 22,

  177. you get the details of this minority group,

  178. this remnant and what marks them out,

  179. how you recognize them,

  180. what makes for them to be a remnant group.

  181. And then in verses one to seven of chapter nine,

  182. you see something of the hope for the remnant.

  183. So let's start part one with the story,

  184. the story in verses one to eight.

  185. Now, if you were with us last week,

  186. and someone did say to me last week

  187. that this was confusing,

  188. and I tried really hard to explain it simply,

  189. but I obviously didn't do a great job.

  190. But you'll know that the southern state of Judah,

  191. so God's people have been divided into Judah and Israel,

  192. Judah in the south, Israel in the north,

  193. and the southern community of Judah

  194. with Jerusalem as its capital city

  195. are now being threatened by Syria,

  196. which is called Aram in the story,

  197. and by Israel, which is sometimes called Ephraim.

  198. They formed an alliance together,

  199. and they have threatened Judah and Jerusalem.

  200. And that has put King Ahaz in a flap.

  201. And we found him last week like that,

  202. and Isaiah came to him and spoke God's word to him.

  203. And he told Ahaz, listen,

  204. I want to tell you, you must listen to God.

  205. And in order to persuade you to listen to God,

  206. there will be a sign.

  207. Ask for a sign.

  208. Ahaz refused.

  209. God gave him a sign anyway,

  210. and the sign was a child.

  211. And now as you pick up chapter eight, verse one,

  212. you find in verse one that Isaiah is taking out

  213. a large scroll, a banner, a placard of some kind,

  214. and he's writing the name Meher Shalal Hashbaz on it.

  215. And he's calling Uriah and Zechariah

  216. to witness to it in verse two.

  217. In some ways, this is kind of like a gender reveal party,

  218. although the gender's already been revealed.

  219. It's a name reveal party.

  220. And Isaiah is going early on the name.

  221. He is placarding the name of his new child around.

  222. Meher Shalal Hashbaz means something like speed,

  223. spoil, haste, booty.

  224. It's a reference to the coming Assyrian army.

  225. They're going to come really fast,

  226. and they're going to take all of the spoil.

  227. And effectively, the placard, I guess,

  228. means in some senses, like, the end is nigh.

  229. Yeah, you know those placards that people call,

  230. the end is nigh.

  231. That's basically what the placard is saying

  232. to the northern kingdoms of Israel and Syria.

  233. In verse three, you hear that the son is born

  234. to Isaiah's wife.

  235. Then I made love to the prophetess,

  236. and she conceived and gave birth to a son.

  237. And the Lord said to me,

  238. name him Meher Shalal Hashbaz.

  239. And just like God promised,

  240. before the child even knows or understands

  241. what an army is,

  242. the threat of Israel and Syria invading Judah has gone.

  243. Assyria, the swift, spoil, haste, booty kingdom,

  244. has swept through it and defeated the two nations.

  245. Verse five then picks up the story

  246. as the Lord himself tells it.

  247. The Lord spoke to me again.

  248. Because this people, that is the people of Israel,

  249. has rejected the gentle flowing waters of Shiloah,

  250. that is the stream that's flowing into Jerusalem,

  251. and rejoices over Rezin, that is the king of Syria or Aram,

  252. and the son of Ramalia, that is the king of Israel.

  253. Therefore, the Lord is about to bring against them

  254. the mighty waters of the Euphrates,

  255. the king of Assyria with all his pomp.

  256. It will overflow all its channels,

  257. run over all its banks,

  258. and sweep into Judah, swirling over it,

  259. passing through it, and reaching up to the neck.

  260. Its outspread wings will cover the breadth of your land, Emmanuel.

  261. The key to those verses, I think,

  262. is understanding those gentle flowing waters of Jerusalem.

  263. So while Jerusalem itself, we found,

  264. it was a fortress city.

  265. It had been reinforced by King Uzziah.

  266. Still, the water supply for Jerusalem was kind of flaky.

  267. It was this waters of Shiloah.

  268. And here the people are, effectively,

  269. they're looking at God's water supply into Jerusalem

  270. and going, that will never work.

  271. That will never stand.

  272. That will never be enough.

  273. And so they turn to the strength of their alliance.

  274. And then in what is some kind of, I guess, tragic irony,

  275. they discover, actually,

  276. that the God who is the God of the gentle flowing waters of Shiloah,

  277. who is supplying Jerusalem,

  278. is also, it turns out,

  279. the God of the great river Euphrates.

  280. And so God turns the river Euphrates

  281. and floods them.

  282. That river is

  283. a metaphor for the Assyrian army.

  284. And they wash away Syria,

  285. they wash away Israel,

  286. and they even come through Judah

  287. and up to the neck of Jerusalem itself.

  288. And that's exactly what happens.

  289. The Assyrian army marches down the coast,

  290. cuts off the supply lines of the Northern Alliance,

  291. and then destroys them completely.

  292. About 20 years later,

  293. working their way through Judah,

  294. they capture the cities

  295. and they get right to the gates of Jerusalem,

  296. which they fail to take.

  297. I want you just to imagine,

  298. I know this,

  299. it all feels very distant, doesn't it?

  300. But I want you to try and imagine with me,

  301. if you can,

  302. just what it might have been like to live there.

  303. You know,

  304. you're having a chat

  305. with one of your office colleagues,

  306. or whatever the equivalent is of an office

  307. in, you know,

  308. 700 BC.

  309. And you're by the water cooler,

  310. again,

  311. whatever the equivalent is of that.

  312. And you know,

  313. one of your colleagues says to you,

  314. do you believe in all that God stuff?

  315. Really?

  316. Do you believe all that stuff

  317. about, you know,

  318. Jerusalem being safe?

  319. Do you believe that?

  320. Do you believe that

  321. God will keep his people?

  322. I know that's what they say,

  323. isn't it?

  324. They say that God

  325. has this promise

  326. to look after his people.

  327. Do you believe that?

  328. That Ahaz really just

  329. has to do nothing

  330. but trust the Lord

  331. and everything will be okay?

  332. Do you believe that?

  333. Well,

  334. the conversation carries on,

  335. doesn't it?

  336. And everyone's answer

  337. is exactly the same.

  338. Of course I don't believe it.

  339. What a complete load of rubbish.

  340. Have you seen the water supply

  341. in Jerusalem?

  342. It's terrible.

  343. It's pathetic.

  344. It won't stand up to anything.

  345. And so you think,

  346. well,

  347. okay,

  348. I'm listening to this conversation

  349. and choices are hard to make,

  350. aren't they?

  351. It's difficult to make decisions

  352. and so basically

  353. I'm just going to do

  354. what everyone else does.

  355. I'm just going to believe

  356. what everyone else believes.

  357. And it turns out

  358. to be horribly wrong

  359. because it turns out

  360. that most people were wrong

  361. and the remnant were right.

  362. Now,

  363. I want to suggest to you

  364. that's exactly what you see

  365. happening around you

  366. all the time today.

  367. What do you think about Jesus?

  368. Do you really think

  369. Jesus is divine?

  370. Yeah,

  371. Christians say

  372. that Jesus is coming again

  373. to judge the living

  374. and the dead.

  375. Do you believe that?

  376. Really?

  377. I mean,

  378. just look around you.

  379. Everything seems to carry on

  380. as normal.

  381. People who don't believe

  382. in Jesus,

  383. they seem to have

  384. perfectly good lives.

  385. In fact,

  386. in some ways,

  387. they seem to have

  388. better lives.

  389. This cross and resurrection stuff,

  390. is that really important?

  391. Is that what life is for?

  392. No,

  393. of course it's not.

  394. You know,

  395. my friend's nephew's

  396. brother,

  397. sister,

  398. has read a bit of the Bible

  399. and they think

  400. they've found

  401. contradictions in it.

  402. And so,

  403. because choices

  404. and decisions

  405. are hard to make,

  406. most people

  407. just go with the flow

  408. and they reject Jesus.

  409. And like Syria

  410. and Israel,

  411. they will find themselves

  412. to be horribly wrong.

  413. Jesus himself said,

  414. for wide is the gate

  415. and broad is the road

  416. that leads to destruction

  417. and many enter through it.

  418. But small is the gate

  419. and narrow the road

  420. that leads to life

  421. and only a few find it.

  422. That's part one,

  423. the history

  424. or the story

  425. of what's been happening.

  426. Israel and Syria

  427. are defeated by Assyria

  428. before Isaiah's son

  429. is able to say

  430. mummy or daddy.

  431. The majority

  432. are in the wrong.

  433. Then comes part two,

  434. the marks

  435. of the remnant.

  436. verses 9 to 22

  437. of chapter 8.

  438. Now, I think

  439. you would be okay

  440. to be a little confused

  441. by these verses at first.

  442. They do dot around the place.

  443. Sometimes Isaiah

  444. seems to be speaking

  445. to himself.

  446. It's almost like

  447. you're reading from

  448. Isaiah's personal

  449. spiritual journal.

  450. And sometimes

  451. he's talking to

  452. a group of disciples.

  453. It seems to be

  454. a group of people

  455. he's gathered around him.

  456. Other times

  457. he's quoting the Lord directly.

  458. But the big idea here

  459. that I want you to capture

  460. is that Isaiah,

  461. as opposed to

  462. the rest of the people,

  463. is trusting in the Lord.

  464. And along with Isaiah

  465. trusting the Lord

  466. are a small group

  467. of others

  468. who are doing the same.

  469. So what you have

  470. is a nation

  471. that is in the large part

  472. in rebellion

  473. against God

  474. and then

  475. a small remnant

  476. who are remaining

  477. faithful with Isaiah

  478. at the heart of it.

  479. The majority

  480. going one way

  481. and a small group

  482. of faithful men

  483. and women

  484. going the other.

  485. Now, instead of walking

  486. through verse by verse,

  487. let's just pull out

  488. two marks

  489. of this remnant.

  490. The first mark

  491. is this,

  492. they listen to the Lord

  493. and not people.

  494. Let me pull out

  495. some verses for you.

  496. Look at your Bibles.

  497. Look down at verse 10.

  498. Devise your strategy,

  499. but it will be thwarted.

  500. Propose your plan,

  501. but it will not stand,

  502. for God is with us.

  503. Comes again

  504. in verse 13

  505. where Isaiah says,

  506. the Lord Almighty

  507. is the one

  508. you are to regard as holy.

  509. He is the one

  510. you are to fear.

  511. He is the one

  512. you are to dread.

  513. In other words,

  514. don't dread people,

  515. dread the Lord,

  516. fear the Lord,

  517. not people.

  518. You see it too

  519. in a negative way

  520. that they talk about

  521. the hopes of the masses

  522. around them.

  523. Turn over the page

  524. to verse 19.

  525. When someone tells you

  526. to consult mediums

  527. and spiritists

  528. who whisper and mutter,

  529. should not a people

  530. inquire of their God?

  531. Why consult the dead

  532. on behalf of the living?

  533. Here they're mocking

  534. the whispers

  535. and the mutterings

  536. or the squeaks

  537. and moans

  538. is more literal,

  539. I think,

  540. of the mediums

  541. and the spiritists.

  542. Comparing it

  543. to the word of God

  544. that they heard.

  545. This is the mark

  546. of the remnant

  547. marked out

  548. from the rest

  549. of the nation.

  550. This is a group

  551. of people

  552. who despite

  553. the attitudes

  554. and the convictions

  555. of the world

  556. around them,

  557. they have chosen

  558. to listen

  559. to what God says.

  560. They have come

  561. to the conclusion

  562. that God

  563. with them

  564. is better

  565. than the world

  566. with everyone else.

  567. That's what

  568. they concluded.

  569. that the world

  570. is wrong

  571. and God

  572. is right.

  573. Now,

  574. you're to hear that

  575. and you're to ask,

  576. I think,

  577. why on earth

  578. would they do that?

  579. What would persuade

  580. this small group

  581. of people

  582. against the opinion

  583. of everybody else

  584. that they should

  585. listen to God?

  586. what is it

  587. that they have seen

  588. that everyone else

  589. has missed?

  590. Well,

  591. it's not so much

  592. what they have seen,

  593. is it?

  594. It is what they have heard.

  595. So,

  596. in verse 11,

  597. you find that

  598. the strong hand

  599. of the Lord

  600. is on Isaiah

  601. and the Lord

  602. speaks to him,

  603. warning the people

  604. of the way

  605. to follow.

  606. And Isaiah

  607. listens

  608. and he trusts God

  609. and he trusts

  610. what he says.

  611. He fears the Lord

  612. and not people.

  613. See,

  614. this is Isaiah's

  615. radical claim.

  616. It's the claim

  617. of the whole Bible,

  618. which is that

  619. the world

  620. is ruled

  621. by a God

  622. you cannot see.

  623. A God

  624. who made you,

  625. who loves you,

  626. who will hold you

  627. to account.

  628. You cannot discover

  629. that God

  630. under a microscope.

  631. You cannot discover

  632. him with a telescope.

  633. But you can discover

  634. him through

  635. what he says,

  636. through his word.

  637. And faith in him

  638. comes from

  639. hearing him.

  640. The evangelist,

  641. the late Billy Graham,

  642. tells a story

  643. of being challenged

  644. by a friend

  645. about the reliability

  646. of the Bible.

  647. A friend told him

  648. in 1949

  649. that he was out of date.

  650. He said to Billy Graham,

  651. listen,

  652. no one believes

  653. the Bible anymore.

  654. What?

  655. It's ridiculous.

  656. Don't you know

  657. that science

  658. has disproved the Bible?

  659. And Billy Graham

  660. tells the story

  661. that that night

  662. he couldn't sleep

  663. and so he got up

  664. and he went for a walk.

  665. He took his Bible

  666. with him.

  667. He got into the middle

  668. of the woods

  669. and he put his Bible

  670. down on a tree stump

  671. and there he prayed.

  672. He records his prayer

  673. like this.

  674. He says,

  675. oh God,

  676. there are many things

  677. in this book

  678. that I do not understand.

  679. There are some areas

  680. in it that don't seem

  681. to correlate

  682. with modern science,

  683. but Father,

  684. I'm going to accept

  685. this as your word

  686. by faith.

  687. I'm going to allow

  688. faith to go beyond

  689. my intellectual questions

  690. and my doubts.

  691. I will believe this

  692. to be your inspired word.

  693. He stood up

  694. from his knees

  695. on that August night

  696. with tears in his eyes

  697. and he says,

  698. I sensed the presence

  699. and power of God

  700. as I had not sensed it

  701. in months.

  702. Not all my questions

  703. were answered,

  704. but I knew

  705. that a spiritual battle

  706. in my soul

  707. had been fought and won.

  708. That's Isaiah, right?

  709. God, I will listen to you.

  710. I cannot see you,

  711. but I can hear you

  712. and I will listen.

  713. And that's Billy Graham

  714. and that's Isaiah.

  715. Is that you?

  716. Is that you?

  717. Are you basically

  718. deciding what to trust

  719. based on what you see

  720. or based on what

  721. other people see?

  722. Or are you listening

  723. to what God says

  724. in his word?

  725. That's the first mark

  726. of the remnant.

  727. The second mark

  728. is that they are waiting

  729. for the Lord.

  730. Look down at verse 17

  731. of chapter 8.

  732. I will wait for the Lord

  733. who is hiding his face

  734. from the descendants

  735. of Jacob.

  736. I will put my trust

  737. in him.

  738. Here am I

  739. and the children

  740. the Lord has given me.

  741. We are signs

  742. and symbols in Israel

  743. from the Lord Almighty

  744. who dwells

  745. on Mount Zion.

  746. Notice what this means.

  747. Isaiah's here

  748. with the signs

  749. and symbols

  750. of his children.

  751. That's Sher Jashub

  752. whose name means

  753. the remnant will return

  754. and Meher Shalal Hashbaz

  755. who's referring

  756. to the Syrian army

  757. being really fast

  758. and quick

  759. and taking all the spoil.

  760. But he does not yet have

  761. does he

  762. what God has promised.

  763. He actually says

  764. God is hiding his face.

  765. In other words

  766. he is waiting.

  767. He doesn't have everything.

  768. According to verse 20

  769. as he's waiting

  770. the people around him

  771. are living in ignorance

  772. of God's word.

  773. They have no light.

  774. In verse 21

  775. people are even angry

  776. with God

  777. and cursing God.

  778. People are full

  779. of fearful gloom

  780. in verse 22.

  781. This is the world

  782. in which Isaiah

  783. is waiting.

  784. It's a tough world.

  785. It's a dark world.

  786. And they're in the minority

  787. and the minority

  788. even feel like

  789. God might be hiding.

  790. This is Isaiah's world.

  791. This is our world too, right?

  792. We've seen more

  793. of the fulfillment

  794. of God's promises

  795. than Isaiah had.

  796. We know

  797. that the Assyrian army

  798. did destroy

  799. the Northern Alliance.

  800. We know too

  801. that after them

  802. the Babylonian empire came

  803. and they destroyed

  804. the Assyrians

  805. and that after them

  806. and after a few others

  807. the Roman empire came

  808. and occupied Jerusalem

  809. and they crucified

  810. the Son of God.

  811. But we're still waiting

  812. for Christ's return.

  813. We're still waiting

  814. for his returning glory.

  815. We're still living

  816. in a place

  817. and a time

  818. where most people

  819. reject God

  820. and it's not led

  821. to happiness

  822. but to a new kind

  823. of misery and darkness.

  824. You and I live,

  825. don't we,

  826. in a world

  827. where the rich

  828. seem to get richer,

  829. the poor seem to get poorer,

  830. everyone seems to be

  831. out for themselves.

  832. We live in a world

  833. where it's sometimes

  834. dangerous just even

  835. to walk down the street

  836. at night.

  837. We live in a world

  838. dominated by false religion,

  839. false hope,

  840. false gods

  841. and shallow morality

  842. and this world,

  843. the world in which

  844. we live,

  845. it can still sometimes

  846. feel like God

  847. is hiding,

  848. can't it?

  849. And to be part

  850. of the remnant

  851. is not to be sheltered

  852. from those things,

  853. it is to trust God

  854. whilst waiting

  855. in the darkness.

  856. I don't know about you

  857. but I'm not brilliant

  858. at waiting

  859. and I have to practice it

  860. because I spend a lot

  861. of time waiting it seems.

  862. I have a wife

  863. who's not always brilliant

  864. at timekeeping.

  865. But you know,

  866. don't you,

  867. when you're waiting

  868. for stuff

  869. that you go through

  870. a whole range

  871. of emotions,

  872. don't you?

  873. At first,

  874. you're not that bothered.

  875. You know,

  876. well,

  877. they're a bit late,

  878. it's okay.

  879. Then you get into

  880. sort of like anger.

  881. I can't,

  882. does my time

  883. mean nothing to them?

  884. What are they waiting,

  885. why are they making

  886. me wait?

  887. And then you get

  888. kind of emotional

  889. and just sad

  890. and frustrated

  891. and slightly depressed.

  892. But if you,

  893. if you came to me

  894. and you saw me

  895. going through

  896. those range of emotions,

  897. what would you say?

  898. I think you'd say,

  899. listen,

  900. that's just a feature

  901. of waiting, Steve.

  902. That's just a feature

  903. of waiting.

  904. Listen,

  905. you this morning,

  906. you might find

  907. your Christian life hard.

  908. It might be difficult.

  909. Reading your Bible

  910. might feel like a slog.

  911. Going to school

  912. where you're the only Christian

  913. might feel really isolating.

  914. In your family,

  915. it might be really difficult

  916. because you're the only one

  917. who's a Christian

  918. and everyone else around you

  919. thinks it's a bit stupid,

  920. really.

  921. Why are you going

  922. to church again?

  923. Well, listen,

  924. that's what waiting's like.

  925. That's what waiting's like.

  926. Waiting in the darkness.

  927. And, you know,

  928. there are times of relief,

  929. aren't there?

  930. Sunday mornings

  931. and Sunday evenings

  932. are supposed to be like that,

  933. right?

  934. It's the Lord's day.

  935. It's not his half day,

  936. right?

  937. It's his full day,

  938. right?

  939. You can come morning

  940. and evening.

  941. But still,

  942. you won't find it easy.

  943. You will still find at times

  944. that you might think,

  945. maybe I've got this wrong.

  946. What is God doing?

  947. And that's what waiting's like.

  948. So let's look at part three,

  949. the hope for the waiting

  950. or the hope we are waiting for.

  951. If you look down

  952. at verse one of chapter nine,

  953. you'll see that there is great hope

  954. for the remnant

  955. walking in the darkness

  956. of this world.

  957. Nevertheless,

  958. there'll be no more gloom

  959. for those who are in distress.

  960. In the past,

  961. he humbled the land of Zebulun

  962. and the land of Naphtali,

  963. but in the future,

  964. he will honor Galilee of the nations

  965. by the way of the sea

  966. beyond the Jordan.

  967. The people walking in darkness

  968. have seen a great light.

  969. On those living in the land

  970. of deep darkness,

  971. a light has dawned.

  972. Notice what Isaiah does here.

  973. He's speaking to the people.

  974. He's speaking especially,

  975. I think,

  976. to the remnant.

  977. And he tells them,

  978. listen,

  979. there is a time,

  980. I know you're waiting,

  981. but there is a time coming

  982. when the light will break

  983. through the darkness.

  984. But so confident is Isaiah

  985. that this light will break

  986. through the darkness

  987. that he speaks as if

  988. it's already happened.

  989. The verbs are in the past tense.

  990. And suddenly,

  991. Isaiah is so certain,

  992. I can talk as if it's already here,

  993. that in the humble territories

  994. of God's people,

  995. Zebulun and Naphtali and Galilee,

  996. a light will come from there.

  997. The small remnant

  998. will become a great nation

  999. in verse three,

1000. and there will be great rejoicing,

1001. like people at a bumper harvest,

1002. like the kids in the sweet shop.

1003. That day will be like

  1004. Gideon's victory over Midian

  1005. in verse four,

  1006. when the oppression

1007. and the burden on God's people

  1008. was lifted.

  1009. In verse five,

1010. the victory will be final

1011. because no one will need

1012. warrior boots and clothes anymore.

  1013. They will be burned.

1014. There will be fuel for the fire.

  1015. But the point here

1016. is not so much about

  1017. the great victory.

  1018. The light is not

1019. the great victory, is it?

1020. The light is a person,

  1021. as it turns out.

  1022. Not Isaiah's children,

  1023. who in verse 18

1024. are just signs and symbols,

  1025. but the fulfillment

1026. of those signs and symbols.

  1027. Not just a sign

1028. that God is with us,

1029. but actually God with us.

  1030. Verse six,

1031. for to us a child is born,

1032. to us a son is given,

  1033. and the government

1034. will be on his shoulders.

  1035. He will be called

  1036. Wonderful Counselor,

  1037. Mighty God,

  1038. Everlasting Father,

  1039. Prince of Peace.

1040. Just think about those names

  1041. for a moment.

  1042. This is the light.

  1043. I know you're waiting,

1044. but this is the light.

  1045. A Wonderful Counselor

  1046. is coming.

  1047. It doesn't mean

  1048. Counselor like the person

  1049. that you sit down

  1050. and talk to

1051. and tell all your problems.

  1052. That's not the kind

  1053. of Counselor.

  1054. It's the Counselor

  1055. as in the person

1056. who knows what they're doing.

  1057. The wise one,

  1058. the wonderfully wise one

  1059. will come.

  1060. He'll be Mighty God,

  1061. God's power here,

  1062. Everlasting Father,

  1063. like a father

  1064. caring for his children,

  1065. Prince of Peace,

  1066. the Restorer

  1067. of the Remnants Peace.

  1068. Here's Isaiah's big point,

1069. the light you are waiting for.

  1070. This is the light

  1071. you are waiting for,

  1072. says Isaiah.

  1073. God will come,

1074. and he will be your king.

1075. The one that you are waiting for,

1076. the one of whom's government

  1077. will know no end.

1078. He will reign on David's throne

  1079. forever in verse 7,

  1080. establishing and upholding justice

  1081. and righteousness forever.

  1082. This is God.

  1083. This God,

  1084. the God whose glory

  1085. fills the earth

  1086. in Isaiah 6

1087. is humble to a baby,

  1088. Emmanuel,

  1089. who's kind of mentioned

  1090. in Isaiah 7,

1091. is now the warrior king

  1092. of Isaiah 9,

1093. come in the zeal of the Lord

1094. to accomplish the plans of God.

  1095. Now Isaiah, remember,

  1096. he's speaking as a prophet,

  1097. isn't he?

  1098. He's looking forward

1099. to the coming of Christ.

  1100. And Matthew 4

  1101. quotes Isaiah 9

1102. at the start of Jesus' ministry,

  1103. telling us that

  1104. Jesus' preaching

  1105. is the beginning

  1106. of the dawn

  1107. of the coming

  1108. of this light.

  1109. Jesus is the one

  1110. that Isaiah promised.

1111. You know that, don't you?

1112. Because we read this at Christmas,

  1113. you knew that already.

1114. But Jesus is the one promised.

  1115. And it's transfiguration,

  1116. you see, don't you,

  1117. that Jesus' humanity

  1118. and his divinity

1119. are in one person of the sun,

  1120. two natures,

1121. one not obliterating the other.

  1122. The God of glory

  1123. carried in humanity.

  1124. The mighty God

1125. is the child of the virgin.

  1126. The everlasting Father

1127. is on the throne of David.

1128. Emmanuel is with his people.

1129. And then you go, don't you,

  1130. from the shining brilliance

  1131. of the transfiguration,

1132. to the darkness of the cross.

  1133. What's happened?

  1134. What has happened

  1135. to Isaiah's light?

  1136. The darkness and gloom

1137. of a world of sin

1138. is laid on the shoulders

1139. of the light of the world.

  1140. The great light

  1141. is extinguished

  1142. until three days later,

1143. the light of the world

  1144. walks alive in flesh

  1145. from the tomb,

1146. victorious over sin and death,

  1147. leaving not so much

  1148. warrior's boots

  1149. and garments

1150. as fuel for the fire,

  1151. but leaving grave clothes.

  1152. I don't need those anymore.

  1153. We don't need those

  1154. where we're going.

  1155. And then he leaves,

  1156. ascending into glory,

  1157. sending his spirit

  1158. and promising to return

1159. so that you and I

  1160. are waiting for Christ's

  1161. second coming

  1162. in the same way

1163. as Isaiah and his remnant

  1164. were waiting

  1165. for his first coming.

  1166. So the Apostle John

1167. does an Isaiah for us, right?

  1168. He says, listen,

  1169. I know it's difficult.

  1170. I know you're in the tribulation.

1171. I know life is hard.

  1172. I know you're waiting,

  1173. but picture this,

  1174. says the Apostle John.

  1175. Revelation 19, verse 11,

    Revelation 19:11

  1176. he says this,

1177. I saw heaven standing open

  1178. and there before me

  1179. was a white horse

  1180. whose rider was called

  1181. Faithful and True.

  1182. With justice he judges

  1183. and wages war.

1184. His eyes are like blazing fire.

1185. On his head are many crowns.

1186. He has a name written on him

1187. that no one knows but himself.

1188. He is dressed in a robe,

  1189. dipped in blood,

  1190. and his name is

  1191. the Word of God.

  1192. The armies of heaven

  1193. were following him,

  1194. riding on white horses

1195. and dressed in fine linen,

  1196. white and clean.

1197. Coming out of his mouth

  1198. is a sharp sword

1199. with which to strike down

  1200. the nations.

  1201. He'll rule them

  1202. with an iron scepter.

  1203. He treads the winepress

  1204. of the fury

1205. of the wrath of God Almighty.

  1206. On his robe

  1207. and on his thigh

1208. he has the name written

  1209. King of Kings,

  1210. Lord of Lords.

1211. Let me end with this.

  1212. I wonder whether in Isaiah's day,

1213. the problem for most people

  1214. in Isaiah's day

  1215. is that their hopes

  1216. were just too shallow.

  1217. Most people were hoping

1218. for just a better King Ahaz.

  1219. That's what they wanted.

  1220. I just want a king

1221. who basically doesn't sell out

  1222. to foreign nations.

  1223. I want a king

1224. who has some kind of chance

  1225. of ruling this nation

1226. with some kind of wisdom

  1227. and intelligence,

  1228. who doesn't kind of

  1229. just trade our livelihoods

  1230. for his personal gain.

1231. And Isaiah kind of says

  1232. to the remnant,

  1233. doesn't he,

  1234. don't hope for that.

  1235. Let me tell you

  1236. what to hope for.

  1237. Hope's made for something

  1238. bigger than that.

  1239. You don't want

  1240. just a better King

  1241. than Ahaz.

  1242. You want God

  1243. to be King.

  1244. That's what you want.

1245. You want a divine King.

1246. You want God with us.

  1247. You know,

  1248. most people,

  1249. I think to date,

  1250. they're not interested

  1251. in Jesus

  1252. because they think

  1253. that they would be

  1254. fully satisfied

  1255. if only they just

  1256. could have the home

  1257. that they really wanted

  1258. or the friends

  1259. that they really wanted

  1260. or the marriage

  1261. that they really wanted

1262. or if only we could have

  1263. well-behaved children

  1264. or a bank account

  1265. full of money

  1266. or a decent reputation.

  1267. And then the tragedy

  1268. is that some people

  1269. sell Christianity

1270. as if it's mostly designed

  1271. to deliver those things.

  1272. But actually,

1273. if those are the things

  1274. you're hoping for,

  1275. you're better off

  1276. going somewhere else

  1277. because you're not promised

  1278. those things in Christianity.

  1279. The Bible says

  1280. you need to hope

  1281. for something better

  1282. than that.

  1283. There is something bigger

1284. and better to hope for.

  1285. Your hope,

  1286. if you will trust

  1287. in God's promise,

  1288. is that you

  1289. will personally

  1290. look into

  1291. the glorious face

  1292. of the God-man,

  1293. Jesus,

  1294. the one alone

1295. who can truly satisfy you,

  1296. the one whose counsel

  1297. is wonderful,

  1298. the one whose power

  1299. is mighty,

1300. the one whose very presence

  1301. chases away evil

  1302. and death

  1303. and brings eternal

  1304. peace and glory,

  1305. the one whose glory

  1306. and joy will last

1307. not just for a lifetime,

  1308. however long or short

1309. that might be for us,

  1310. but for eternity.

1311. This is why it's okay,

  1312. isn't it,

1313. to be in the minority

  1314. this morning.

  1315. It's okay to be

  1316. in the minority.

  1317. In fact,

  1318. it's the best place

  1319. to be

  1320. because popularity

  1321. now

  1322. is no substitute

  1323. for glory later.

  1324. Small hopes now

  1325. are no substitute

  1326. for God with us.

  1327. You know,

  1328. my plans now,

  1329. my popularity now

  1330. are no substitute

  1331. for eternal hope

  1332. and glory in Jesus.

  1333. And so we live,

  1334. don't we?

  1335. We wait,

  1336. listening to his word,

  1337. waiting in the darkness

1338. for the light to return.

  1339. Let me pray

  1340. as I close.

  1341. Amen.

  1342. Heavenly Father,

  1343. we want to pray

  1344. that you would

  1345. forgive us

  1346. for the times

  1347. where we have made

  1348. decisions about

  1349. the very most

  1350. important things

  1351. in life

  1352. just based on

  1353. what those around us

  1354. are doing.

  1355. we want to be

  1356. better at listening

  1357. to what you say

  1358. in your word,

  1359. trusting in you

  1360. and doubting

  1361. what our eyes see

  1362. and what others say.

  1363. And so, Lord,

  1364. we thank you

  1365. for this wonderful

  1366. hope in Jesus,

  1367. the one who conquered

  1368. sin and death.

1369. And we want to pray

1370. that you would help us

  1371. to live our lives

  1372. listening to him

  1373. in your word

  1374. and waiting

  1375. for his return.

  1376. Please, Lord,

  1377. keep us faithful.

  1378. Keep us going.

  1379. I pray especially

  1380. for those this morning

  1381. who do find themselves

  1382. in a really significant

  1383. minority

1384. in their places of work

  1385. or school or home.

  1386. Please give them grace

  1387. and courage

  1388. and strength

  1389. to keep going

  1390. and keep trusting

  1391. as we wait

  1392. for Christ's return.

1393. In his name we pray.

  1394. Amen.

  1395. Amen.
