  1. Please take your Bibles this morning and open them up to Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  2. ! We've been walking through the book of Colossians together as a church family,

  3. and we've come to Colossians chapter 3, and our passage this morning is verses 1 through 4.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  4. If you don't have a physical Bible of your own that you brought with you, that's okay.

  5. We have them all over the room and seat backs nearby,

  6. but I would encourage you to have a copy of God's Word available to you

  7. as you look on as I preach this passage this morning.

  8. When you found it, Colossians 3 verses 1 through 4,

    Colossians 3:1–4

  9. let's stand this morning together in honor of the reading of the Word of God.

  10. Paul says,

  11. If then you have been raised with Christ,

  12. Seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

  13. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

  14. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

  15. When Christ, who is your life, appears,

  16. then you also will appear with Him in glory.

  17. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the Word of the Lord endures forever.

  18. Father, we pray once more this morning,

  19. God, would you transform the minds of this church

  20. so that we would seek the things that are above,

  21. not things that are of the earth.

  22. Would you fill our thoughts with heavenly things?

  23. Would you fill our hearts with a love and a desire to seek Christ?

  24. We pray all of this in Jesus' name.

  25. Amen.

  26. You may be seated.

  27. I recently had the opportunity to share an important life lesson with my boys several weeks ago.

  28. One of them was just sitting innocently at the dinner table,

  29. minding his own business, looking off into the distance,

  30. apparently a little quieter than usual.

  31. And so Amanda looked at him and asked him,

  32. Hey, what's on your mind?

  33. To which he replied,

  34. Honestly, nothing.

  35. And I said, you know, this is one of those opportunities as a father

  36. that you have to capitalize on to be able to teach about God's world in which we live.

  37. And so I called all the boys together and I said,

  38. Hey, listen, I want you to understand exactly what just happened here.

  39. The female mind cannot comprehend the thought of having nothing at all on their mind.

  40. This is one of the main differences between men and women.

  41. I'm going to speak in general terms here.

  42. I know that there are general exceptions,

  43. but if ever there was evidence that these two genders are not interchangeable, this is it.

  44. The male mind is like a railroad and the female mind is like Spaghetti Junction.

  45. At any given time, they are thinking of 10, 15, 20 things,

  46. but the man, honestly, is possible for him to be thinking of genuinely nothing at all.

  47. There is a distinct difference between the mind of a man and the mind of a woman.

  48. That's how God has made us to be.

  49. This morning, as we look at Colossians chapter 3,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  50. Paul puts that same question before the church.

  51. What is on your mind?

  52. And gender differences aside, for a minute this morning,

  53. he's helping us to see that there ought to be a distinct difference

  54. between the mind of a believer and the mind of a non-believer.

  55. The Christian is called to be heavenly minded.

  56. So let's take a look at the passage,

  57. and I want us to see it in three parts this morning.

  58. This will be our outline.

  59. We try to make it easy for you to follow along and take notes.

  60. So three parts this morning.

  61. We'll see the mind of a Christian first.

  62. Second, we'll see the motivation for the Christian life.

  63. And third, we'll close with a method for Christian thought,

  64. a method for Christian meditation.

  65. I want to get very practical with you as we close this morning.

  66. So three parts, the mind, the motivation, and the method.

  67. Let's take a look.

  68. First, we see the mind of the Christian.

  69. Look there with me to verses 1 and 2.

  70. Paul begins here with a very important if,

  71. before he gives any sort of command here.

  72. Paul says,

  73. if then you have been raised with Christ,

  74. meaning if you are a Christian.

  75. To be a Christian is to be raised with Christ.

  76. It's to be united to the risen Christ by faith.

  77. If then you have been raised with Christ,

  78. seek the things that are above.

  79. That's an important if, isn't it?

  80. You know, the non-believer cannot be expected

  81. to set their minds on heavenly things.

  82. And they're still of the earth.

  83. But, Paul says,

  84. if you have been raised with Christ,

  85. then seek the things that are above.

  86. He's continuing this line of application

  87. that he started in chapter 2, verse 6.

  88. This was sort of the banner verse

  89. of the application section of Colossians,

    Colossians 2:6

  90. chapter 2, verse 6.

  91. He said,

  92. if you have received Christ Jesus as Lord,

  93. then you are called to walk in Him.

  94. Walk in Christ.

  95. And so the question then becomes,

  96. well, Paul,

  97. what does walking in Christ actually look like?

  98. Maybe you've thought that way yourself.

  99. And maybe you've asked that same question.

  100. You say,

  101. well, I know that I have received Christ Jesus as Lord.

  102. I know that I'm a Christian.

  103. I know that I believe in Him.

  104. But what does it actually look like

  105. for me to walk in Christ?

  106. Paul answered that in the negative for us.

  107. He told us what not to do in chapter 2.

  108. He said,

  109. to walk in Christ means to not let anyone take you captive,

  110. he said in chapter 2, verse 8.

  111. To walk in Christ looks like

  112. not letting anyone else pass judgment on you

  113. in regards to human tradition

  114. and legalism and laws and expectations.

  115. In verse 16 of chapter 2.

  116. He said,

  117. walking in Him looks like

  118. not letting anyone disqualify you.

  119. He said in verse 18 of chapter 2.

  120. But now as we turn to chapter 3,

  121. he turns and he then gives us

  122. some positive application.

  123. So we're moving from

  124. what we must not do

  125. to what we must do.

  126. What does walking in Him actually look like?

  127. And he tells us

  128. the Christian walk

  129. requires the engagement

  130. of your mind.

  131. The Christian walk,

  132. to walk in Him,

  133. requires the engagement

  134. of your mind.

  135. If then you have been

  136. raised with Christ,

  137. seek the things that are above

  138. where Christ is,

  139. seated at the right hand of God.

  140. Set your minds

  141. on things that are above.

  142. Your minds.

  143. Set your minds

  144. on things that are above.

  145. Not on things that are on the earth.

  146. The Bible calls God's people

  147. to devote their minds to Him.

  148. You think of some Old Testament passages.

  149. Do not let this book of the law

  150. depart from your mouth,

  151. but meditate on it

  152. day and night,

  153. Joshua 1.8 says.

  154. Blessed is the man

  155. who walks not

  156. in the counsel of the wicked,

  157. nor stands in the way of sinners,

  158. nor sits in the seat of scoffers,

  159. but his delight

  160. is on the law of the Lord.

  161. And on His law,

  162. He meditates,

  163. meditates,

  164. day and night,

  165. Psalm chapter 1 says.

    Psalms 1 chapter mention

  166. Or you go to the New Testament,

  167. it's no different.

  168. Do not be conformed

  169. to the patterns of this world,

  170. but be transformed

  171. by the renewal of what?

  172. Of your mind,

  173. He says in Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  174. Or in Philippians,

  175. He says whatever is true,

  176. whatever is honorable,

  177. whatever is just,

  178. whatever is pure,

  179. whatever is lovely,

  180. whatever is commendable,

  181. if there is any excellence,

  182. if there is anything

  183. worthy of praise,

  184. think about these things.

  185. Think, He says.

  186. Set your mind on these things.

  187. Think, think, think.

  188. Engage your mind

  189. in thoughts of God.

  190. This is the call of a Christian.

  191. And I know the objections, right?

  192. Because I've heard them before.

  193. I'm just not much

  194. of the academic type.

  195. I never went to seminary.

  196. All of these theological things

  197. are just too deep for me.

  198. Now listen,

  199. not everybody has to have

  200. a PhD in theology,

  201. but every Christian

  202. must devote their minds

  203. to the Lord.

  204. The pastor theologian,

  205. P.T. Forsyth,

  206. was often accused

  207. of preaching above

  208. the congregation's heads.

  209. And you know what his reply

  210. often was?

  211. Lift up your heads.

  212. It's not very pastorally sensitive.

  213. But he might be on to something.

  214. Church,

  215. we are all called

  216. to lift up our heads

  217. and to devote our minds

  218. to the exercise

  219. of thinking about God,

  220. thinking about His glory,

  221. thinking about spiritual truths,

  222. thinking about theology.

  223. Now before I became a Christian,

  224. I'll confess to you,

  225. I was not much of a reader at all.

  226. No one would have described me

  227. as an academic.

  228. I did not care to read a book at all,

  229. but I had good models,

  230. good examples

  231. who put good books into my hands.

  232. And they told me,

  233. go and read.

  234. Go and learn.

  235. Go and think about God.

  236. Go think about theology.

  237. Go think about the church.

  238. Go think about your salvation.

  239. Think about heaven.

  240. Think about your identity in Christ.

  241. Think about the mission

  242. God's given you.

  243. Think about holiness.

  244. The Christian life

  245. requires us to think.

  246. I remember hearing

  247. one of the leaders

  248. in our campus ministry in college

  249. say just in an offhand comment one day

  250. that one of his life goals

  251. was to be a master

  252. of the Word of God.

  253. I had never heard anybody

  254. talk like that before.

  255. Yeah, I knew the Bible was good.

  256. I knew it was full of good,

  257. helpful tidbits

  258. and information for my life,

  259. but never had I ever heard

  260. anyone express

  261. a desire to so fill their minds

  262. with God's Word

  263. that they are thinking

  264. the thoughts of God constantly.

  265. I want that for us, church.

  266. I want that for me.

  267. Paul says,

  268. you must fill your mind

  269. with the truth.

  270. Seek the things

  271. that are above

  272. with your minds,

  273. but not just your minds.

  274. Paul also says

  275. this walk with Christ

  276. also requires

  277. a delight of the heart.

  278. It requires a delight

  279. of the heart.

  280. Look there again

  281. to verse 1.

  282. Paul gives these two

  283. parallel commands here.

  284. One,

  285. seek the things

  286. that are above,

  287. verse 1,

  288. and 2,

  289. set your minds

  290. on the things above,

  291. verse 2.

  292. So,

  293. seek and set your minds.

  294. Those two are closely related.

  295. They're closely connected,

  296. but they're not exactly the same.

  297. That word for seek,

  298. it has the heart in view.

  299. It's the same language

  300. that Jesus uses

  301. when He says,

  302. seek first the kingdom of God

  303. and His righteousness.

  304. It's not just a mental pursuit.

  305. It demands the engagement

  306. and the delight of your heart.

  307. The NIV translates it well.

  308. We were talking about

  309. different translations

  310. in the Grow Class Hour.

  311. The NIV translates it well here.

  312. It says,

  313. set your heart

  314. on things above.

  315. And the KJV

  316. actually takes that angle

  317. in verse 2

  318. where it says,

  319. set your affection,

  320. the affections of the heart.

  321. Set your affection

  322. on things above,

  323. not on things

  324. that are of the earth.

  325. In other words,

  326. church,

  327. it is good

  328. and it's right

  329. to know what's true,

  330. but that is not enough.

  331. It's not enough

  332. to know the truth.

  333. We must also

  334. love the truth.

  335. It's not enough

  336. to know facts about God.

  337. We must also

  338. love the Lord our God

  339. with all of our heart,

  340. all of our mind,

  341. all of our soul,

  342. all of our strength.

  343. We have to know about Him

  344. in order to love Him.

  345. That's a requirement.

  346. But simply knowing

  347. about Him

  348. is not enough.

  349. We must love Him.

  350. We must set our heart

  351. on things above.

  352. Didn't Jesus press this home

  353. with the Pharisees?

  354. He said,

  355. nobody knew the bare facts

  356. about the Word of God

  357. than the Pharisees.

  358. They could honor Him

  359. with their lips

  360. all day long,

  361. but what did Jesus say?

  362. These people honor me

  363. with their lips

  364. and yet their heart

  365. is far from me.

  366. The Christian life

  367. requires that you set

  368. your heart

  369. on things above,

  370. not just your head.

  371. And the truth

  372. of who God is

  373. and what Christ

  374. has done for us,

  375. that's meant to move us

  376. in the affections

  377. of our heart.

  378. I do want to clarify

  379. something here

  380. that's very important

  381. because in our culture today,

  382. year 2026,

  383. when we hear

  384. the engagement

  385. of our heart,

  386. when we hear

  387. setting our heart

  388. on things above

  389. and seeking God

  390. with our heart,

  391. we think emotion,

  392. don't we?

  393. And we hear heart

  394. and we think emotion.

  395. I just want to make it clear

  396. that is not what Paul

  397. is saying here.

  398. In fact,

  399. I think Paul is likely

  400. throwing another subtle jab

  401. here at these false teachers

  402. in Colossae.

  403. They were really emphasizing

  404. the priority

  405. of having a deep

  406. emotional experience

  407. in worship.

  408. And they said,

  409. what was really important

  410. for you is that

  411. to be spiritually full,

  412. you have to have

  413. this overwhelming

  414. spiritual,

  415. emotional experience

  416. where you're overcome

  417. with emotion

  418. and that's how you know

  419. you've done something

  420. really special.

  421. Do you realize

  422. many Christians today

  423. think the same thing?

  424. They think that

  425. in order to have

  426. a truly valid

  427. religious experience

  428. in worship,

  429. it must be

  430. deeply emotional.

  431. And many churches

  432. arrange their gatherings

  433. to try and manipulate

  434. that emotional response.

  435. If they can just

  436. get people excited

  437. and emotional,

  438. well then that is

  439. the goal.

  440. We've done it.

  441. I've actually heard

  442. somebody say,

  443. and this is a direct quote,

  444. let's get them

  445. really excited

  446. and then later on

  447. they can figure out

  448. what they're excited about.

  449. Can I just say

  450. that that's completely

  451. backwards from the

  452. biblical pattern.

  453. The biblical pattern

  454. is truth

  455. that moves

  456. the heart.

  457. It's truth

  458. first as the leader

  459. that engages

  460. the affections

  461. of the heart.

  462. It's truth

  463. that stirs up

  464. love

  465. for the Lord.

  466. There's a difference

  467. between emotions

  468. and what the Puritans

  469. called the affections

  470. of the heart.

  471. Do you know

  472. this difference?

  473. Sam Storm

  474. summed it up well.

  475. Let me read this to you.

  476. He says,

  477. emotions

  478. can often be

  479. no more than

  480. physiologically

  481. heightened states

  482. of either euphoria

  483. or fear

  484. that are unrelated

  485. to what the mind

  486. perceives as true.

  487. Affections,

  488. on the other hand,

  489. are always

  490. the fruit

  491. or the effect

  492. of what the mind

  493. understands

  494. and knows.

  495. The will

  496. or inclination

  497. is moved

  498. either toward

  499. or away

  500. from something

  501. that is perceived

  502. by the mind.

  503. The Christian life

  504. must be centered

  505. on truth

  506. that stirs up

  507. the affections

  508. of your heart.

  509. And so Paul says

  510. the Christian walk,

  511. church,

  512. it requires

  513. your mind,

  514. it requires

  515. the engagement,

  516. the affections

  517. of your heart.

  518. And lastly,

  519. briefly here

  520. on this first point,

  521. we see that

  522. to walk in him

  523. requires

  524. an intention

  525. of your will.

  526. I just want to make

  527. this plain here

  528. before we move on.

  529. To seek

  530. and to set

  531. before,

  532. that requires

  533. some effort,

  534. church.

  535. And the truth is

  536. not one of us

  537. naturally drifts

  538. towards thoughts

  539. of heavenly things.

  540. and not one of us

  541. naturally wakes up

  542. in the morning

  543. feeling warm

  544. and eager

  545. to pursue heavenly truths.

  546. Our minds

  547. are foggy,

  548. our hearts

  549. are naturally cold.

  550. We're filled

  551. with thoughts

  552. of things we must do.

  553. We're filled

  554. with worries

  555. of this life.

  556. We're filled

  557. with thoughts

  558. about our jobs

  559. and our families

  560. and our health

  561. and our obligations.

  562. This is a discipline

  563. that will require

  564. effort out of you.

  565. And intentionality,

  566. you must make

  567. an effort

  568. to stop thinking

  569. about every earthly

  570. thing that demands

  571. your attention

  572. constantly

  573. and to set

  574. your minds

  575. on things above.

  576. You have to

  577. intentionally

  578. engage your mind

  579. with thoughts

  580. of Jesus

  581. and the finished

  582. work of the gospel.

  583. If you want

  584. to get warm,

  585. you have to move

  586. closer to the fire.

  587. If you want

  588. to be filled,

  589. you have to prepare

  590. and eat.

  591. If you want

  592. to be heavenly,

  593. you have to

  594. intentionally seek

  595. after heavenly

  596. things.

  597. My point is,

  598. church,

  599. the call of Christ

  600. is to seek Him

  601. with everything

  602. you have

  603. and everything

  604. you are.

  605. That's an overwhelming

  606. call, isn't it?

  607. The demands

  608. of Jesus on us

  609. are not small

  610. and light.

  611. They're not easy.

  612. This is a call

  613. to offer

  614. your entire

  615. self up to Him

  616. as a living

  617. sacrifice.

  618. Your mind,

  619. your heart,

  620. your very will.

  621. So second,

  622. we should ask,

  623. what is the

  624. motivating power

  625. behind this work?

  626. What is the

  627. motivation

  628. that God

  629. gives us

  630. for this task?

  631. What's the power

  632. behind this

  633. whole self-pursuit

  634. of heavenly things?

  635. Paul tells us

  636. the power

  637. is in

  638. who Christ

  639. is,

  640. what Christ

  641. has done

  642. and in

  643. the glorious

  644. fact that

  645. you are

  646. united

  647. to Christ

  648. by faith.

  649. See how

  650. he roots

  651. all of this

  652. in Christ

  653. and what

  654. he's done?

  655. Why does

  656. he tell us

  657. to seek

  658. things that

  659. are above?

  660. Why?

  661. Why set

  662. our minds

  663. on heavenly

  664. things and

  665. not of things

  666. that are of

  667. the earth?

  668. It's because

  669. that is

  670. where Christ

  671. is.

  672. Think of

  673. things that

  674. are above

  675. where Christ

  676. is,

  677. seated at

  678. the right

  679. hand of God.

  680. He's seated

  681. there.

  682. This is a

  683. reminder of

  684. the finished

  685. work of

  686. Christ.

  687. Christ is

  688. seated because

  689. the work

  690. of redemption

  691. is done.

  692. He's earned

  693. that seat.

  694. And Jesus

  695. has fully

  696. accomplished

  697. the work

  698. of salvation.

  699. Paul's

  700. reminding us,

  701. by the way,

  702. this is why

  703. you can't

  704. add to it

  705. with all

  706. of your

  707. rules and

  708. all of your

  709. regulations

  710. and all

  711. of your

  712. religion

  713. and all

  714. of your

  715. traditions,

  716. all of

  717. these burdens

  718. that the

  719. false teachers

  720. in Colossae

  721. wanted to

  722. add to

  723. the finished

  724. work of

  725. Christ.

  726. He says,

  727. no,

  728. no,

  729. no,

  730. no,

  731. no.

  732. We don't

  733. do as

  734. those false

  735. teachers

  736. wanted us

  737. to do.

  738. We don't

  739. labor and

  740. work and

  741. do all

  742. these religious

  743. things in

  744. order to

  745. climb our

  746. way closer

  747. to God.

  748. The gospel

  749. tells us

  750. God has

  751. come down

  752. to us.

  753. We don't

  754. need to

  755. achieve our

  756. salvation.

  757. Christ has

  758. come and

  759. achieved our

  760. salvation.

  761. We can't

  762. add anything

  763. to it.

  764. He's in

  765. heaven.

  766. He sat

  767. down.

  768. It's

  769. done.

  770. Jesus

  771. doesn't need

  772. any help

  773. from earth.

  774. He's already

  775. seated in

  776. heaven.

  777. That's what the

  778. gospel tells us.

  779. It's the finished

  780. work of God.

  781. The finished

  782. work of Christ.

  783. Your perfection

  784. that you must

  785. have to be

  786. made right with

  787. God.

  788. Guess what?

  789. Christ has

  790. already achieved

  791. it by His

  792. perfect life.

  793. The burden

  794. of debt that

  795. you've earned

  796. but you can't

  797. pay.

  798. Guess what?

  799. Christ has

  800. already paid

  801. for it by His

  802. sacrificial death.

  803. hope of eternal

  804. life that we

  805. can't ever

  806. achieve by our

  807. labors.

  808. Guess what?

  809. Christ has

  810. already risen

  811. from the

  812. grave.

  813. He's done

  814. it.

  815. He's taken a

  816. seat at the

  817. right hand of

  818. God.

  819. Not just any

  820. seat.

  821. The seat of

  822. eternal power

  823. and eternal

  824. authority at the

  825. right hand of the

  826. Lord where the

  827. Son of Man will

  828. reign as King

  829. for the rest of

  830. eternity.

  831. Church, this is

  832. why we're called

  833. to set our

  834. minds on

  835. heavenly things.

  836. We seek the

  837. things that are

  838. above because

  839. that's where

  840. Christ is but

  841. not only this.

  842. I want you to

  843. see this.

  844. We seek the

  845. things that are

  846. above because

  847. that's where we

  848. are in Him.

  849. I love this

  850. church.

  851. We have in

  852. these four

  853. verses such a

  854. beautiful picture

  855. of what we call

  856. our union

  857. with Christ.

  858. our union

  859. with Christ.

  860. If you want

  861. something to

  862. think about

  863. this afternoon,

  864. think about

  865. your union

  866. with Christ.

  867. Do you

  868. realize,

  869. Christian,

  870. that by

  871. faith in

  872. Jesus,

  873. you are

  874. spiritually

  875. united to

  876. the risen

  877. Lord Jesus

  878. Christ?

  879. And this

  880. union with

  881. Christ,

  882. that's at the

  883. very heart

  884. of your

  885. salvation.

  886. The Puritan

  887. Thomas Goodwin,

  888. he says that

  889. it's the ocean

  890. into which

  891. all other

  892. doctrines run.

  893. And the

  894. Bible uses

  895. metaphors for

  896. our union

  897. because it's

  898. just so hard

  899. for simple

  900. people like

  901. us to grasp

  902. the depth

  903. of it.

  904. It says,

  905. He is the

  906. vine and we

  907. are what?

  908. The branches.

  909. He is the

  910. head and we

  911. are what?

  912. The body.

  913. He is the

  914. bridegroom and

  915. we are the

  916. bride.

  917. He is the

  918. cornerstone and

  919. we are living

  920. stones being

  921. built up into

  922. a spiritual

  923. house.

  924. This is

  925. union

  926. language.

  927. Our entire

  928. existence as

  929. God's people,

  930. our Christian

  931. life together

  932. is empowered

  933. and motivated

  934. by the virtue

  935. of our union

  936. with the

  937. living Lord

  938. Jesus Christ.

  939. It's such a

  940. precious truth.

  941. It's a remedy

  942. for every doubt

  943. you might have

  944. in this world.

  945. if you look

  946. on earthly

  947. things like

  948. your own

  949. effort,

  950. your own

  951. religious

  952. rule keeping,

  953. you may

  954. wonder,

  955. am I good

  956. enough to

  957. get into

  958. heaven?

  959. But if you

  960. look to your

  961. union with

  962. Christ,

  963. you see the

  964. perfect life

  965. he lived.

  966. It's as if

  967. you perfectly

  968. obeyed.

  969. His record

  970. of perfect

  971. obedience is

  972. your record

  973. of perfect

  974. obedience because

  975. you are united

  976. to him.

  977. If you look

  978. on earthly

  979. things like

  980. your own

  981. lingering sin

  982. and your own

  983. heart,

  984. Christian,

  985. your own

  986. guilt,

  987. your own

  988. shame,

  989. you may

  990. wonder,

  991. how can I

  992. ever get

  993. out from

  994. under this

  995. burden of

  996. guilt and

  997. shame for

  998. my sin?

  999. You ever

  1000. feel that

  1001. way?

  1002. How can I

  1003. ever be

  1004. free from

  1005. the enslaving

  1006. power of

  1007. sin over

  1008. me?

  1009. But if you

  1010. lift your

  1011. eyes and

  1012. look to your

  1013. union with

  1014. Christ,

  1015. you see Christ

  1016. has already

  1017. died to sin

  1018. once and for

  1019. all.

  1020. He has

  1021. already paid

  1022. for sin.

  1023. He has

  1024. already destroyed

  1025. sin's

  1026. enslaving power.

  1027. He has

  1028. already removed

  1029. God's wrath

  1030. from me.

  1031. He has

  1032. already borne

  1033. my guilt.

  1034. He has

  1035. already carried

  1036. my shame.

  1037. I don't have

  1038. to bear that

  1039. anymore because

  1040. I am united

  1041. to him by

  1042. faith.

  1043. His death

  1044. is your

  1045. death,

  1046. Christian.

  1047. You have

  1048. died,

  1049. Paul says

  1050. in verse

  1051. 3.

  1052. If you look

  1053. on earthly

  1054. things,

  1055. you may

  1056. wonder,

  1057. how can I

  1058. ever live

  1059. this Christian

  1060. life that

  1061. God calls

  1062. me to live?

  1063. This all

  1064. in pursuit

  1065. of the Lord,

  1066. of heavenly

  1067. things.

  1068. How can I

  1069. offer up all

  1070. my mind,

  1071. all of my

  1072. heart,

  1073. all of my

  1074. will,

  1075. all of my

  1076. entire self?

  1077. may may

  1078. may may

  1079. may

  1080. may

1081. may may may may may may may

  1082. !

1083. you can see that you are raised to walk in newness of life.

1084. You are raised as a new creation in Christ.

1085. You can, as Paul calls us to do in Romans 6,

1086. reckon yourself, consider yourself dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

1087. It's almost unfathomably good news.

1088. And it's so hard to see right now the full depth of these truths,

1089. but church, soon and very soon we will see, Paul says in verse 3,

1090. you have died and your life is also hidden with Christ in God.

  1091. It is hidden.

1092. The real you has not yet appeared.

1093. But one day soon and very soon, Christ Jesus will return and our faith will be sight.

  1094. And verse 4 says,

1095. When Christ, who is your life, appears, you also will appear with him in glory.

1096. That if you look on earthly things, all you will see is this weak earthen vessel

1097. that gets sick and gets tired, gets discouraged, gets weary,

1098. wrestles with all sorts of sin and temptation.

1099. But when you lift your eyes to heaven and you look to Christ,

1100. and when you think on things where Christ is,

1101. you see Christ there risen and glorified,

1102. raised with a new, glorified, sinless, indestructible, perfected body,

  1103. never to die again.

  1104. And 1 John 3, 12 says,

1105. When we see him, we will be made like him.

1106. We will one day be glorified,

  1107. perfected,

  1108. victorious,

  1109. sinless,

1110. made fit for an eternity of joy in the presence of God.

1111. Don't you want to think on these things?

1112. Think on things where Christ is.

  1113. Seek him.

1114. Set your heart's affections on him.

1115. Make Christ and his glory the all-consuming desire and pursuit of your life.

1116. Because you are united to him,

1117. church, this is your life.

  1118. So third, and finally,

1119. I want to close by making this as practical as I can.

1120. I want to give you a method for how.

  1121. This is the how.

  1122. Okay?

1123. And what are we called to do?

1124. We're called to set our minds on Christ.

  1125. Why?

1126. It's because we are united to him.

1127. That's who we are in him.

  1128. So how?

1129. And I have seven very brief suggestions for you.

1130. I want to make this as practical as I can

1131. so that even this afternoon,

1132. you can go home and put it into practice.

  1133. First, number one,

  1134. start.

  1135. Start.

  1136. Start.

1137. Yeah, I understand this whole idea of,

  1138. of thinking and,

1139. and meditating and setting your minds on heavenly things.

1140. That may be new to you.

  1141. Okay, that's fine.

  1142. Just start somewhere.

1143. That's sometimes the hardest part.

  1144. Just start.

  1145. Just think.

  1146. Just start.

  1147. Number two,

  1148. set a time.

  1149. Make an appointment.

  1150. Set a time.

1151. Don't just wait for the random cracks in your schedule to appear

  1152. and,

1153. and then try and fill it.

1154. Although that is good to do as well.

  1155. Set a time.

  1156. Make an appointment.

1157. Put it on your calendar.

  1158. Set a timer,

  1159. even,

1160. for how long this appointment will last.

  1161. 10 minutes,

  1162. 20 minutes,

  1163. 30 minutes,

  1164. whatever it may be.

1165. But set a time and keep your appointments.

  1166. Number three,

  1167. silence all distractions.

1168. Because y'all know they're going to come.

1169. If you need to go outside,

  1170. go outside.

1171. If you need to leave your phone in another room,

  1172. I would recommend it.

1173. And this is one reason why,

  1174. by the way,

1175. this is a free nugget.

1176. This is one reason why I prefer a physical Bible

1177. as opposed to a digital Bible on my phone.

  1178. Because those distractions come,

  1179. don't they?

1180. It is way too easy.

1181. The task here is to set our minds on heavenly things.

  1182. We need to,

1183. as best as we can,

1184. set up the guardrails here

1185. so that we can focus our mind and our hearts on the Lord.

  1186. That's the goal here.

  1187. So number four,

1188. saturate your mind with the truth.

1189. Saturate your mind with the truth.

1190. And there is no such thing as too much.

  1191. Read your Bible.

  1192. Read your Bible.

1193. And come to it daily.

1194. And listen to the Word as you ride in your car.

  1195. Read good Christian books.

  1196. If you need recommendations,

1197. y'all know I got some for you.

  1198. Read above your head.

  1199. Read above your understanding.

  1200. Read together.

1201. Memorize passages of the Word.

  1202. Memorize verses.

  1203. Memorize chapters.

  1204. Memorize entire books.

1205. You can do it, church.

1206. Fill your mind with the truth.

1207. Listen diligently to sound teaching and preaching.

1208. And come not just to be entertained,

1209. but to grow and to listen and to learn

1210. in your understanding of God's Word.

  1211. Meditate on the truth.

  1212. You know,

1213. this is the difference between

1214. Eastern meditation and Christian meditation.

1215. But the goal of Christian meditation

1216. is not to empty your mind of all thoughts.

1217. The goal of Christian meditation

1218. is to fill your mind with the truth

1219. and to think on what's true.

  1220. Number five.

  1221. Number five.

  1222. Select one thing.

  1223. Select one thing.

  1224. If you're like me,

  1225. I read a passage

1226. and I got about a hundred different avenues

  1227. I could chase here.

  1228. Select one truth,

  1229. one idea.

1230. This may be one truth about who God is.

1231. Maybe it's one of His attributes.

1232. It may be one verse from a passage you're reading.

1233. It may be a main idea that summarizes a chapter.

1234. It may be a concept that you haven't quite figured out yet.

  1235. Whatever it is,

1236. I want you to select one thing.

  1237. That's enough.

  1238. And think about it.

  1239. Contemplate it.

1240. Toss it all around in your mind.

1241. Ask good questions about it.

1242. Ask as many questions as you can about it.

  1243. Pray about it.

  1244. And then, number six,

1245. I want you to savor it.

  1246. Savor it.

1247. Act as if you were tasting the greatest meal

1248. you have ever had placed before you.

1249. And you want to enjoy every single bite.

1250. And you want to take note of all the different flavors.

1251. You want to eat all of it completely.

1252. You want to enjoy that to its fullest degree.

  1253. That's what you do

1254. when you toss this truth around in your mind.

1255. You are seeking to delight in what is true.

1256. Not just to know it.

1257. You're seeking to savor what is true.

1258. You're seeking to feed and nourish

  1259. and satisfy your soul

  1260. with a feast from heaven's table.

  1261. And finally, number seven,

  1262. share it.

  1263. Share it.

  1264. Our evangelism,

1265. we pray often that we would be developing here

  1266. a culture of evangelism.

1267. Our evangelism ought to be the overflow

1268. of our delight in God and His truth.

1269. So you say to your neighbor,

1270. can I just share with you something

1271. that's been stirring in my mind today?

1272. Can I share with you something

1273. that I've been thinking about?

1274. Can I share with you something

  1275. I'm excited about?

1276. God, maybe our evangelism is dry

1277. because our hearts are dull

1278. and our minds are empty.

1279. It's not just good to share with non-believers.

1280. We also pray for a culture of discipleship

1281. within the church, don't we?

  1282. Share with one another.

1283. Can you imagine the growth

1284. that could happen in this church,

  1285. spiritual growth,

  1286. if every member

  1287. was so saturated

1288. with the truth of God

1289. and our hearts were so filled

1290. with love for heavenly things

1291. and then our mouths were open

  1292. sharing and proclaiming

1293. what God is showing us

1294. in His Word to one another.

1295. This is how the church

1296. builds itself up in love, isn't it?

1297. By speaking the truth in love,

  1298. we grow up

  1299. into Christ,

1300. but we can't give to others

1301. what we don't have yet

  1302. ourselves.

  1303. Church, there is

  1304. nothing greater

1305. that you can set your mind on

  1306. than thoughts of God

  1307. and His glory.

  1308. Amen?

1309. One of my favorite little books

  1310. is Richard Baxter's

  1311. The Saint's Everlasting Rest.

  1312. And in it,

  1313. he encourages believers

  1314. to think

  1315. and to meditate,

  1316. to contemplate the glory

  1317. that's ahead of you

  1318. who know the Lord.

1319. And I just want to share

  1320. a couple of passages

  1321. from that book

  1322. as we close.

  1323. He says,

1324. If there be so certain

  1325. and glorious

1326. a rest for the saints,

1327. why is there no more

  1328. earnest seeking after it?

  1329. One would think

1330. if a man did but once

1331. hear of such unspeakable glory

  1332. to be obtained

1333. and believed what he heard,

  1334. he would be transported

  1335. with the vehemency

1336. of his desire after it

  1337. and would almost forget

  1338. to eat and drink

1339. and would care for nothing else

  1340. and speak of

1341. and inquire after nothing else

1342. but how to get this treasure.

1343. And yet people who hear of it daily

1344. and profess to believe it

  1345. as a fundamental article

  1346. of their faith

1347. pay as little mind of it

  1348. or labor for it

1349. as if they had never heard

1350. of any such thing at all

  1351. or did not believe

1352. one word that they heard.

  1353. So he says,

  1354. make conscience

  1355. of daily exercising

  1356. thy graces

  1357. in meditation

1358. as well as in prayer.

1359. Retire into some secret place

  1360. at a time

  1361. the most convenient

  1362. to thyself

  1363. and laying aside

  1364. all worldly thoughts

  1365. with all possible seriousness

  1366. and reverence,

  1367. look up towards heaven.

  1368. Remember there

  1369. is thine everlasting rest.

  1370. Study its excellency

  1371. and reality

  1372. and rise from sense

  1373. to faith

  1374. by comparing heavenly

  1375. with earthly joys

  1376. and then having pleaded

  1377. the case reverently

  1378. with God

  1379. and seriously

  1380. with thine own heart

  1381. now hast pleaded thyself

  1382. from a clod

  1383. to a flame

  1384. from a forgetful sinner

1385. and a lover of the world

  1386. to an ardent lover

  1387. of God

  1388. from a fearful coward

  1389. to a resolved Christian

  1390. from an unfruitful sadness

  1391. to a joyful life

  1392. in a word

1393. thou hast pleaded thy heart

  1394. from earth

  1395. to heaven

  1396. from conversing below

  1397. to walking with God

  1398. until thou canst

1399. lay thy heart to rest

1400. as in the bosom of Christ

  1401. by some such meditation

  1402. of thy everlasting rest.

  1403. Church

1404. let us love the Lord our God

1405. with all of our mind

1406. if then you have been raised

  1407. with Christ

  1408. seek the things

  1409. that are above.

  1410. Father we pray

1411. would you fill our minds

  1412. with thoughts of Christ?

  1413. Would you remove

  1414. every desire

  1415. every inclination

  1416. of the heart

  1417. every thought

1418. that dwells on earthly things

1419. and would you replace it

  1420. with eternal truth?

  1421. Father we praise you

  1422. that Christ has come

  1423. from heaven to earth

1424. Lord to lift us up

  1425. from earth to heaven

  1426. and we pray God

1427. if there are any here

  1428. who have not yet

1429. put their faith in Christ

  1430. would you lead them

  1431. to do so

1432. by the power of your grace

  1433. by your spirit

  1434. unite them

  1435. with a risen Christ

  1436. we pray all this

  1437. in Jesus name

  1438. Amen

  1439. may may may
