  1. Let's hear the word of the Lord. Genesis chapter 29 verse 31 to 35.

    Genesis 29:31–35

  2. ! When the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb.

  3. ! But Rachel was barren, and Leah conceived and bore a son.

  4. And she called his name Reuben.

  5. For she said, Because the Lord has looked upon my affliction, for now my husband will love me.

  6. She conceived again and bore a son, and said, Because the Lord has heard that I am hated,

  7. he has given me this son also. And she called his name Simeon.

  8. Again, she conceived and bore a son, and said, Now, this time my husband will be attached to me.

  9. Because I have borne him three sons. Therefore his name was called Levi.

  10. And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, This time I will praise the Lord.

  11. Therefore she called his name Judah. Then she ceased bearing.

  12. This is the word of the Lord.

  13. Praise be to God. Thank you, Joe. Please take a seat.

  14. So we continue through the book of Genesis.

  15. And this story is getting juicier and juicier as it goes.

  16. This is the historical breakdown of what happens to this family, from Abraham to Isaac to Jacob.

  17. And honestly, it's been nothing but messy, plus messy, plus messy.

  18. Christina and I, we love watching TV shows, after we've read the Bible, of course.

  19. Maybe our favorite one more recently is called Slow Horses.

  20. Has anyone watched Slow Horses on Apple TV?

  21. It's a very dry, British kind of TV show.

  22. Another one we've watched is The Pits, that we watched with Sarah while she was hanging out with us as well.

  23. That's also good.

  24. And as I was reading this journey that this family goes on, I can't help but imagine that this is just a TV show about a dysfunctional, ancient family.

  25. It just, actually, if I've never been more convinced right now as looking at this, that God's perfect plan works through imperfect people.

  26. Works through all the dysfunction.

  27. Works through all the mess.

  28. And yet here we are, still recipients of grace.

  29. Recipients of the blessing.

  30. And let me just rewind your mind a little bit about this guy called Jacob.

  31. He steals his older brother's blessing.

  32. Okay, remember, he mocks his dad and says, oh, I am Esau.

  33. And then he says, the Lord your God blessed me to go and get this very quickly, so it is me.

  34. Last week, though, Gabe shows us a little bit of a turnaround.

  35. The turnaround here is that actually, Jacob goes from saying, this is the Lord your God, Dad, to now, this is the Lord my God.

  36. But he encounters God himself in the dream.

  37. And, of course, he doesn't do anything to deserve this.

  38. He is still just as messed up.

  39. He's running away from his older brother because he stole his blessing and because his older brother wants to kill him.

  40. So his mom, who has been plotting with him, sends him away to uncle.

  41. And on the way to uncle, he has this dream and he encounters God.

  42. And he's like, surely, surely, chapter 28, verse 16, surely the Lord is in this place.

  43. And I did not know it.

  44. Wow, God has been with me.

  45. I just wasn't aware of it.

  46. And then he carries on later.

  47. Then the Lord shall be my God.

  48. No longer my dad's God.

  49. He is now my God.

  50. And just when we think, oh, maybe the TV show can end here in the happily ever after, it does not.

  51. Even though he encounters God, even though he declares this is my God now, he still goes on a journey.

  52. And we unravel a really interesting part of the story.

  53. I've had Joe read a little bit of it because we're actually going to go through 29 and 30.

  54. So we're going to fly through this story, which is why I didn't ask him to read all of it.

  55. But let me set the scene.

  56. So he runs from his brother.

  57. He heads towards Uncle Laban.

  58. He sits at a well, still figuring out his life.

  59. Remember, at this point, he doesn't know this, but he's never going to see his mom again because of the deceit that they started.

  60. And he sits at a well.

  61. And then when he sits at a well, he sees a group of shepherds come over.

  62. These shepherds are here to hang out and wait for more shepherds to come.

  63. When the more shepherds come at this well, there's a big rock covering the well that they need the water to.

  64. So, but custom and tradition dictates that they wait for everyone to come together.

  65. They push the rock out together.

  66. And so they all have access to the water together.

  67. So it's fair.

  68. So he's sat there waiting and he talks to these guys.

  69. And this is where chapter nine, if you're following in scripture, you can follow me here.

  70. He says this, verse four.

  71. My brothers, where do you come from?

  72. They said, we are from Haran.

  73. He said, oh, I know someone from Haran.

  74. Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?

  75. They said, we know him.

  76. He said, is it well with him?

  77. Is he doing okay?

  78. They said, it is well.

  79. See, Rachel, his daughter is coming with the sheep.

  80. So you call it coincidence, but we call it here that God is continually paving the way for this deceiver, this messed up deceiver.

  81. God keeps pouring out blessing.

  82. It doesn't seem fair, but this is how God works with all of us.

  83. And so they say, yeah, Laban's doing all right.

  84. Oh, there's his daughter coming.

  85. As soon as Jacob sees Rachel from afar, it is love at first sight.

  86. He sees her from afar and actually he tries to get rid of them.

  87. He's like, hey, haven't you guys got jobs to do?

  88. Go, go, do something.

  89. And so he wants to hang out with them.

  90. And verse nine, while he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess.

  91. Now, as soon as Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother, Jacob came near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth and watered the flock.

  92. He's showing off.

  93. So they're supposed to wait for everyone to come and move the rock together.

  94. The moment he sees the girl, he's like, guys, stand to the side.

  95. I will push this rock myself.

  96. Do you not know that I do high rocks?

  97. And so I pushed the rock myself.

  98. Look how strong I am, Rachel.

  99. Fall in love with me now, please.

  100. And so he tries to impress her and he's very excited to see her.

  101. Then Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud because he realized, I am so messed up.

  102. I've just lost my family.

  103. And how good is it that I'm sat at this random well in the middle of the day.

  104. And yet God would send me a relative.

  105. God would send me family.

  106. And he's relieved to the point where he's so excited.

  107. And Jacob then tells Rachel that her father's kinsman, actually, they're related, that he was Rebecca's son.

  108. And she ran and told her father.

  109. As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister, he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house.

  110. Jacob told Laban all these things.

  111. So he breaks down to Uncle Laban.

  112. This is exactly what happened.

  113. Now, he's a deceiver, remember.

  114. So I'm not here under any delusions that he's telling the full accurate story of what happened.

  115. He's probably putting himself in a decent light here.

  116. But Laban is very, very excited to see him.

  117. And Laban said to him, surely you are my bone and my flesh.

  118. You are my family now.

  119. Pause.

  120. Just before you think that Laban is a good guy, we need to remember who Laban was.

  121. Actually, Laban is super excited about seeing Jacob because it wasn't that long ago when he met another servant a few chapters before where Isaac sends his servant out to find his son Jacob's wife.

  122. Sorry, Abraham, Isaac.

  123. And so that's when he meets Rebecca, when the servant meets Rebecca.

  124. Do you remember that?

  125. And actually, Laban gets really rich from that interaction.

  126. What happens is in order to get Rebecca's hand, they pay a dowry and actually get lots of ornaments.

  127. And so Laban gets very, very rich from this.

  128. And so he sat, suddenly hears from Rachel that that family has come again, that rich family has come again.

  129. And what do you think he's doing?

  130. He's licking his lips.

  131. He's like, here we go again.

  132. And so he goes out, greets him, and he says, you are my family.

  133. Come and join me.

  134. And you know straight away that something is wrong because straight afterwards, verse 15, when Laban said to Jacob, because you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing?

  135. He hears the story about Jacob and he realizes something.

  136. He's like, okay, I probably stand a chance to get rich from this again.

  137. But this guy, he's just ran it from his family and he actually doesn't have much money.

  138. How can I take advantage of this situation?

  139. I know.

  140. I'll bring him into my family and I'll make him work for me.

  141. And so then what he says is, tell me, what shall your wages be?

  142. Very quickly, without anyone realizing, Jacob turns from family to servant.

  143. Turns from someone who was supposed to be bone and flesh to suddenly, I will pay you and you'll work for me.

  144. You will become mine.

  145. I will own you and you will work for me.

  146. Isn't this what happens when we go out and chase things and take matters into our own hands?

  147. Because very quickly, things can turn on us.

  148. And we turn from something that we think will complete us, but then owns us and corrupts us and turns us into servants instead.

  149. He knows he doesn't have money, but he does know.

  150. Remember at this point now, verse 14 tells us, Jacob stays with Laban for a month.

  151. And he sees, Laban sees that Jacob is smitten over his daughter, Rachel.

  152. So he's like, look, how can I pay you?

  153. And so what happens, they come into an arrangement.

  154. Now, Laban had two daughters.

  155. The name of the older was Leah and the name of the younger was Rachel.

  156. Leah's eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance.

  157. It's a really interesting way to describe two sisters.

  158. Leah's eyes were weak.

  159. People don't really truly know what that means, but it may be means that she has poor eyesight.

  160. But on the whole, we can just take from this that she just wasn't the prettier one out of the two.

  161. Just like how my brother is not the prettier one out of the two of I, what we see here is a very similar thing.

  162. And that's easily understood for you guys.

  163. But Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance.

  164. She was not only good looking, she was actually attractive, sexually attractive.

  165. And so Laban knows what he's doing.

  166. And so he asked Jacob, well, how can I pay you?

  167. And then Jacob here says, well, I love Rachel.

  168. I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter, Rachel.

  169. Bearing in mind, that's a lot of money.

  170. The average would have been one to two years, but he loved her so much.

  171. I will be willing to stay for seven years to work for you in order for me to be able to marry your daughter.

  172. Laban says, well, it's better that I give it to you than to anyone else.

  173. So, OK, stay with me.

  174. And so Jacob stays for seven years.

  175. And this is so romantic, verse 20.

  176. And they seem to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.

  177. And then it comes to the wedding night.

  178. It comes to the wedding night.

  179. They have a big festival.

  180. They have a lot of fun.

  181. And from there, it's time to give his daughter to Jacob.

  182. But instead of giving him Rachel, he gives him Leah.

  183. Jacob doesn't realize because they've spent a whole week celebrating.

  184. It's pretty dark.

  185. He's pretty drunk.

  186. So he gets given Leah.

  187. He doesn't know it until he wakes up the next morning.

  188. And verse 25, it says this.

  189. Can you see how much of a TV show this is?

  190. And it's Jacob said to Laban, what is this you have done to me?

  191. Did I not serve you with you for Rachel?

  192. Why then have you deceived me?

  193. Oh, the irony in all of this.

  194. The deceiver is deceived.

  195. And the deceiver is outraged that he was deceived.

  196. The audience just sits and goes, serves you right.

  197. What comes around, God goes around, comes around.

  198. Laban is a very smart man.

  199. He says this, verse 26.

  200. It is not so done in our country to give the younger before the firstborn.

  201. Remember, he knows what Jacob did.

  202. He knows that Jacob stole the blessing from his firstborn.

  203. So he's kind of going to him, Jacob, Jacob.

  204. You know what I did here.

  205. You know what this is about.

  206. Don't you start telling me about deception.

  207. Don't you start telling me about firstborn.

  208. You know what's happened here.

  209. Jacob knows this.

  210. And so he says, fine.

  211. So actually, Laban then says, complete the week of this one.

  212. And then we will give you the other in return for another seven years.

  213. So what turned out to be just trying to marry one person, he has to give up 14 years in order to be able to marry both of them.

  214. Just in case you're wondering, if you're not familiar with the Bible, you're like, wait, does the Bible condone people, polygamy?

  215. Does the Bible condone this kind of deception?

  216. Does the Bible condone marrying two sisters?

  217. The answer is no.

  218. It is simply just documenting history here.

  219. And actually, if you were to look at this, you will be able to see and deduce very quickly that marrying more than one wife, especially if they are sisters, is a terrible, terrible idea.

  220. No one should do this.

  221. I don't know why you want more than one wife.

  222. Here he has two, and he chooses sisters.

  223. And for the rest of his life, I can tell you he is going to be in pain.

  224. So just a side note here.

  225. But here's where the main topic that I'm going to focus on today is verse 30.

  226. So Jacob went into Rachel also, and he loved Rachel more than Leah and served Laban for another seven years.

  227. 14 years he gives his life, and now we reach the passage that Joe read for us.

  228. When the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

  229. There are 12 tribes of Israel.

  230. What we're about to see is how this came about, how the 12 children came.

  231. And I wish I could tell you it was through prayer and meditation and devotion and holiness.

  232. No, it is from complete chaos, dysfunction, envy, and mess.

  233. St. Augustine talks about this idea of disordered loves.

  234. You look at the problems in the world right now, it's because we have disordered loves.

  235. We've put things in the wrong place.

  236. We have prioritized the wrong things.

  237. God tells us to love him and only him, but we prioritize all these other things,

  238. and we have all these disordered loves that come in, and now we have the consequence that we have in this world.

  239. So those disordered loves we can see here, and I'm going to use another term here, which is just misplaced desire.

  240. When you desire the wrong thing, this is what comes about.

  241. When you desire the wrong thing, when you yearn for the wrong thing, this is what happens.

  242. What is that called?

  243. It's called idolatry.

  244. Which now to a Chinese culture is quite a familiar word.

  245. It's like, well, don't have statues in your house.

  246. Don't kind of, just don't worship all these other things.

  247. But actually, idolatry, yes, is those things, but it is actually way more.

  248. An idol is something that just isn't God.

  249. It's something that you put all your attention and your focus and your worth on.

  250. Tim Keller says, your idol, if you want to find out what your idol is, wherever your mind wanders to aimlessly, that's your idol.

  251. The thing that your mind wanders to when you have a moment of space just to reflect and just to think.

  252. What are you most consumed by?

  253. Is it a relationship?

  254. Is it the stock market?

  255. Is it your job?

  256. Is it your social life?

  257. What is it?

  258. We all have these idols.

  259. John Calvin says, the human heart is a factory of idols.

  260. We can't help but desire.

  261. We can't help but want.

  262. But it's those misplaced desires that cause us problems.

  263. And what you find here is misplaced desires all over.

  264. Laban has a misplaced desire because all he wants is profit and personal gain.

  265. Jacob's misplaced desire is now he's found all his hope in this one woman.

  266. Leah and Rachel is what we're going to study a little bit more today.

  267. You see that they also have their misplaced desires.

  268. Here's the problem when you have misplaced desires.

  269. You put all your hope in one thing, hoping that you're going to get satisfaction and contentment from it.

  270. But actually very soon it turns against you.

  271. Tim Keller has this thing that when he's talking about this passage, he says,

  272. you go to bed with Leah.

  273. You go to bed thinking that it's Rachel, but you wake up in the morning and it's Leah.

  274. And he asks the question to all of us is, what are the things that we go to bed with,

  275. that we put all our hope in, thinking that it will be perfect for us,

  276. thinking that it will bring us complete and utter satisfaction,

  277. thinking that it's Rachel, but we wake up and actually it's quite the opposite.

  278. It's not what we expected.

  279. It's not what we wanted.

  280. But before you know it, you've made decisions and you've gone down this slippery slope

  281. and you know where you want to be.

  282. You thought it was Rachel, but it turned out to be Leah.

  283. Misplaced desires is what we're going to focus on today.

  284. Verse 31, when the Lord saw that Leah was hated,

  285. unloved is another translation, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

  286. It's really interesting.

  287. This covenant family that was going to bless nations.

  288. Every generation there seems to be infertility.

  289. Almost just to show us that it's not going to be them that is going to do it.

  290. It's only going to be God that does it.

  291. It's only going to be God who opens the womb.

  292. It seems to be God's MO also,

  293. that he seems to choose those who are despised and rejected and unloved.

  294. He seems to choose those.

  295. And so he sees late Leah.

  296. He opens her womb and Rachel was barren.

  297. And Leah conceives her first son and called his name Reuben,

  298. because the Lord has looked upon my affliction.

  299. For now my husband will love me.

  300. It's interesting.

  301. So she has a baby.

  302. And yet what she really wants is her husband's affection.

  303. So she's like, finally.

  304. I mean, this is easy for us to identify,

  305. because I think there's traits of this even now in modern society.

  306. But especially back then in the ancient world,

  307. a woman's sole purpose is to bear children.

  308. That is it.

  309. If you don't bear children, you are ashamed of the family.

  310. So for her and for Rachel, there's this race now to have babies.

  311. And so Leah starts off first.

  312. It's 1-0 to Leah.

  313. She has a baby.

  314. She hopes that this baby brings her husband's love.

  315. It does not.

  316. She conceives again and bores a son.

  317. 2-0.

  318. Because the Lord has heard that I am hated.

  319. He has given me the son also.

  320. And just before halftime, she called his name Simeon.

  321. Again, she conceived and bore another son.

  322. And this time my husband will be attached to me,

  323. because it is now 3-0 to Leah.

  324. She's like, I'm good.

  325. I'm in a good place.

  326. Surely now, with three children, my husband will love me.

  327. Doesn't happen.

  328. Doesn't work.

  329. All right.

  330. We'll try again.

  331. And then she conceived again and bore a son.

  332. And this time I will praise the Lord.

  333. Therefore, she called his name Judah.

  334. 4-0 to Leah.

  335. It's halftime.

  336. Then she ceased bearing.

  337. Can you just imagine the dynamics and the relationship

  338. between these two sisters right now?

  339. Leah and Rachel.

  340. One.

  341. Remember, it's not even just about Jacob.

  342. Because Rachel would have been the prettier one from the beginning.

  343. So actually, this is what Leah would have had to put up with

  344. the whole of her life.

  345. Being overlooked.

  346. Being unloved.

  347. Being unchosen.

  348. To the point where, when it's the wedding day,

  349. your father sneaks you in to a man's bedroom

  350. because he realizes, he thinks,

  351. that you won't ever get married.

  352. So this is the only way you're going to get married.

  353. Imagine the heartbreak.

  354. Imagine the resentment.

  355. Feel how Leah is feeling.

  356. And yet the Lord sees and gives her babies.

  357. And you'd have thought of Rachel.

  358. Well, the pretty one.

  359. Everyone would have been just praising her for the whole of her life.

  360. Wow.

  361. And yet, is she happy?

  362. No, she's not.

  363. Because why?

  364. She also has misplaced desires.

  365. When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children,

  366. she envied her sister.

  367. She said to Jacob,

  368. give me children or I shall die.

  369. We're going to stop here and talk a little bit about the topic of envy.

  370. This dangerous, dangerous topic.

  371. Charles Swindle says,

  372. envy is the great enemy of peace.

  373. It makes me think about all of us who are struggling through anxiety to some degree,

  374. whether it's a low-grade hum of anxiety,

  375. always thinking that you're not quite enough,

  376. or you're wanting something that someone else has.

  377. This is it.

  378. In a city, we're surrounded by it.

  379. We're constantly being told what we don't have.

  380. Constantly being told what other people have that we should try to have.

  381. But envy is the great enemy of peace.

  382. Roosevelt was the one who said,

  383. comparison is the thief of joy.

  384. Where does envy come from?

  385. It comes from comparison.

  386. It comes from looking at someone going,

  387. wow, that guy has a head full of hair.

  388. And it's just such a waste.

  389. He just doesn't do anything with it.

  390. It's just so annoying.

  391. In fact, if I can't have it,

  392. neither should he.

  393. And now I'm just stripped of joy

  394. because people are misusing God's blessings to them.

  395. Comparison is the thief of joy.

  396. John Tyson said that comparison is the assassin of contentment.

  397. Do you feel content?

  398. As you look at your life, do you feel content?

  399. Gab, you're shaking your head not fully.

  400. How many of us really do?

  401. Isn't that the battle?

  402. Paul says godliness leads to contentment,

  403. but how many of us are truly content?

  404. Or how many of us are actually just looking somewhere else?

  405. Going, oh, I want that.

  406. I need that.

  407. If I don't have that, what does Rachel say here?

  408. Give me children or I shall die.

  409. So even though Leah wants affection and attention,

  410. Rachel just wants babies.

  411. Idolatry is when you have something so high in your priority list

  412. and if you don't get it,

  413. you feel as though it's not worth living your life anymore.

  414. That's what we see here.

  415. Reminds me of another story in the Bible

  416. when David and Saul,

  417. they beat Goliath.

  418. We know David and Goliath.

  419. So even if you didn't grow up in the church,

  420. you probably have heard that story.

  421. And what happens?

  422. They beat the Philistines.

  423. They go home and everyone's just celebrating.

  424. Saul's celebrating.

  425. David's celebrating.

  426. Everyone's celebrating.

  427. And then there is a chant.

  428. And it's in 1 Samuel 18 where they say,

  429. Saul has killed people by the thousands.

  430. And he's like, yes, I'm the man.

  431. And then turns out that's just the first line of the verse first

  432. because the second verse is,

  433. but David has killed people by the ten thousands.

  434. And so even though Saul was like celebrating,

  435. yeah, thousands.

  436. And he's like, wait.

  437. Wait.

  438. You say thousands for me and ten thousands for him?

  439. It's just a story.

  440. It's just a song.

  441. It's just a poem.

  442. But he took it personally.

  443. He took it very personally.

  444. And from that moment on,

  445. Saul does not look at David in the same way.

  446. What is that?

  447. That is comparison, stealing, joy.

  448. That is the assassin of contentment.

  449. That is the enemy of peace.

  450. It makes me think what we have.

  451. As you look elsewhere,

  452. as you look constantly elsewhere,

  453. what is the thing that you are holding on to?

  454. What is your idol?

  455. Jacob is funny.

  456. So Rachel says,

  457. give me children or I shall die.

  458. Blames him completely.

  459. Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel and said,

  460. am I in the place of God

  461. who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?

  462. What he's saying is,

  463. don't blame me.

  464. I'm doing the same thing.

  465. It's 4-0 this side and there's nothing here.

  466. I'm not doing anything different.

  467. And it tells me something else.

  468. When we put all of our hope in the idol,

  469. when we put all of our satisfaction and contentment,

  470. our hopes for it onto one person,

  471. we will always, always fail.

  472. We experienced,

  473. and some of us got to see Trevor and Teresa

  474. get married yesterday

  475. and it was the most beautiful of weddings.

  476. But one thing that we like to say a lot

  477. to couples getting married

  478. or even those who are married

  479. is practicing the sentiment

  480. of looking your spouse in the eye

  481. and saying,

  482. you will never be enough for me.

  483. In fact,

  484. if a wedding couple ever asked me

  485. to preach from Genesis 30

  486. for their wedding,

  487. this is what I would say.

  488. No one's ever asked me to do it in the past,

  489. but maybe one day they will be.

  490. I would say,

  491. your wife will never truly satisfy you.

  492. Your husband will never truly satisfy you.

  493. Your spouse will never truly satisfy you.

  494. If you think that they will,

  495. what will happen is they won't

  496. and then you'll be disappointed

  497. and then you will crash.

  498. You cannot put a human being

  499. in the place of God.

  500. God is the only one who can truly satisfy.

  501. So it's actually a beautiful thing

  502. when a couple romantically in love

  503. can look each other in the eye

  504. and go,

  505. you will never satisfy me fully.

  506. Only God can.

  507. What we see here is Leah and Rachel

  508. were both putting their hope

  509. in this one stupid man

  510. that is called Jacob.

  511. And you see how stupid he is

  512. because the story continues.

  513. Remember, it's 4-0.

  514. Keep track.

  515. Then she said,

  516. here is my servant Bilal.

  517. If I can't have a baby,

  518. let me give my servant to you

  519. so then she can have a baby on my behalf

  520. so at least I can catch up.

  521. And so Jacob's like,

  522. yeah, sure, whatever.

  523. So she gave him her servant Bilal

  524. and Jacob went into her

  525. and guess what?

  526. Bilal conceives.

  527. So it's 4-1.

  528. Kind of.

  529. Not really,

  530. because it's not really Rachel's.

  531. But she's trying to put matters

  532. into her own hands.

  533. She's like,

  534. look, the camp of Leah

  535. is doing too well.

  536. Let's try and figure out

  537. another way, guys.

  538. This is the new strategy.

  539. We're going to use servants.

  540. And so that happens.

  541. And then Rachel said,

  542. God has judged me

  543. and also heard my voice

  544. and give me a son.

  545. Therefore she called his name Dan.

  546. Rachel's servant Bilal

  547. then conceived again

  548. and bore Jacob a second son.

  549. Then Rachel said,

  550. with mighty wrestlings,

  551. I have wrestled with my sister

  552. and have prevailed.

  553. So she called his name Naphtali.

  554. It's 4-2.

  555. Leah's getting a little bit nervous

  556. because the score's getting

  557. a little bit tight.

  558. And remember,

  559. her womb is now closed

  560. because she has seized bearing

  561. at the end of 29.

  562. So then she goes,

  563. okay, well,

  564. if you're going to do that,

  565. then I will do that too.

  566. Subs,

  567. bring in my servant too.

  568. Let's go.

  569. And so what happens is,

  570. verse 9,

  571. when Leah saw that she had

  572. seized bearing,

  573. she took her servant Zilpah

  574. and gave her to Jacob as a wife.

  575. And Jacob's like,

  576. sure, whatever.

  577. Then Leah's servant Zilpah

  578. bore Jacob a son.

  579. And Leah said,

  580. good fortune has come.

  581. So she called his name Gad.

  582. Leah's servant Zilpah

  583. bore Jacob a second son.

  584. Whoa, 6-2.

  585. Happy am I,

  586. verse 13.

  587. For women have called me happy,

  588. so she called his name Asher.

  589. You can see the ugly side of envy.

  590. You can see the ugly side of idolatry

  591. when you put someone

  592. in the place of God.

  593. Someone who will never be able

  594. to satisfy you.

  595. We've all done this before.

  596. We've all thought that job

  597. would give us

  598. the ultimate satisfaction.

  599. We've all thought that relationship

  600. will help us feel better

  601. about ourselves.

  602. And time and time again,

  603. it does not.

  604. And then we wonder why.

  605. This story sounds ridiculous.

  606. But yet it is the story of us.

  607. It is the story of our hearts

  608. putting our hope

  609. in the wrong things.

  610. The misplaced desires.

  611. And there's a really

  612. interesting story.

  613. In the days of wheat harvest,

  614. Reuben went and found mandrakes

  615. in the field

  616. and brought them

  617. to his mother, Leah.

  618. Reuben, at this point,

  619. was about 5-6 years old.

  620. If you're interested,

  621. this whole thing

  622. happens in the space

  623. about 10-14 years.

  624. In my head,

  625. I was just like,

  626. the amount of nappies,

  627. the amount of sleepless nights,

  628. I don't even know

  629. how this is possible.

  630. So at this point,

  631. the firstborn, Reuben,

  632. is getting a little bit older.

  633. He's out in the field,

  634. just hanging out,

  635. and he finds mandrakes.

  636. Mandrakes,

  637. which is actually

  638. a fertility plant.

  639. It's an aphrodisiac.

  640. People would take it

  641. hoping that they would

  642. get pregnant from it.

  643. And so,

  644. little boy Reuben

  645. runs around in the field,

  646. finds mandrakes,

  647. and brings them back home

  648. to his mom, Leah.

  649. Then Rachel said to Leah,

  650. please give me

  651. some of your son's mandrakes.

  652. Remember,

  653. they're living

  654. in the same house together.

  655. And you imagine

  656. just the drama.

  657. And so,

  658. Rachel sees

  659. little Reuben

  660. come in

  661. with his fertility plant,

  662. and she's like,

  663. I want those mandrakes.

  664. And then,

  665. Leah completely overreacts

  666. in some ways

  667. and says,

  668. is it a small matter

  669. that you've taken away

  670. my husband?

  671. Would you take away

  672. my son's mandrakes also?

  673. So you've already

  674. taken my husband.

  675. Leave the mandrakes alone.

  676. The mandrakes belong to us.

  677. Why would you do that?

  678. Of course,

  679. Rachel is desperate

  680. because Rachel

  681. is 6'2 down.

  682. So she's trying to think,

  683. how can I do this?

  684. Bear in mind here

  685. that Rachel is actually

  686. the head of the harem.

  687. She's in control.

  688. Why?

  689. Because she's the loved one.

  690. She's the favored one.

  691. So she actually gets

  692. to decide

  693. where her husband

  694. goes to spend the night.

  695. Interesting,

  696. because it's the

  697. overreact

  698. because she's

  699. the younger one.

  700. But anyway,

  701. they strike a deal.

  702. Would you take away

  703. my son's mandrakes also?

  704. Rachel said,

  705. then he may lie

  706. with you tonight

  707. in exchange

  708. for your son's mandrakes.

  709. So they make a deal.

  710. Mandrakes for the husband.

  711. Some wives are like,

  712. a plant for a husband?

  713. Good deal.

  714. Jacob comes home

  715. from work

  716. and he gets told,

  717. Leah went out to me

  718. and said,

  719. you must come in to me

  720. for me,

  721. for I have hired you

  722. with my son's mandrakes.

  723. And Jacob says,

  724. yeah, sure, whatever.

  725. And so he goes in

  726. with her.

  727. Rachel's happy

  728. because now she has

  729. a plant.

  730. So she's turned it

  731. into a soup

  732. and she's drinking it

  733. and she's just

  734. bathing in it.

  735. She's doing whatever

  736. she needs to do

  737. to pull the score

  738. back even.

  739. And yet,

  740. the most twisted thing

  741. happens here.

  742. She gives away,

  743. she takes the mandrakes,

  744. but actually,

  745. the fifth lady

  746. goes to Leah.

  747. Leah's womb

  748. opens again.

  749. And even though

  750. she takes matters

  751. into her own hands,

  752. God listened to Leah,

  753. verse 17,

  754. and she conceived

  755. and bore Jacob

  756. a fifth son.

  757. Seven,

  758. two.

  759. God has given me

  760. my wages

  761. because I gave

  762. my servant

  763. to my husband.

  764. So she called

  765. his name Issachar.

  766. And Leah conceived

  767. again and she

  768. bore Jacob

  769. a sixth son.

  770. God has endowed

  771. me with a good

  772. endowment.

  773. Now my husband

  774. will honor me

  775. because I have

  776. bore him

  777. six sons.

  778. She called

  779. his name

  780. Zebulun.

  781. Afterwards,

  782. she bore

  783. a daughter

  784. and called

  785. her name

  786. Dina.

  787. the sad story

  788. of when we go

  789. chasing after idols,

  790. the sad story

  791. of us being

  792. engrossed in comparison

  793. that leads to envy,

  794. that kills

  795. contentment,

  796. kills peace,

  797. robs joy.

  798. How often do we

  799. have that as

  800. children of God

  801. ourselves,

  802. not happy with

  803. what we've been

  804. given,

  805. looking elsewhere

  806. thinking,

  807. if only I had

  808. that,

  809. I will be happy.

  810. And yet here

  811. we see what

  812. happens,

  813. what are the

  814. consequences of

  815. that.

  816. Then something

  817. interesting happens

  818. and we're near

  819. the end of this

  820. story.

  821. Then God

  822. remembered Rachel

  823. and God

  824. listened to her

  825. and opened

  826. her womb.

  827. The word

  828. remembered there

  829. isn't God

  830. saying,

  831. oh,

  832. sorry,

  833. I totally

  834. forgot about

  835. you,

  836. Rachel.

  837. Did not

  838. remember that

  839. you existed.

  840. That's not

  841. what it is.

  842. It's the same

  843. remembered when

  844. God remembered

  845. Noah.

  846. What that

  847. remembered word

  848. means is

  849. is that he

  850. acts on the

  851. promise that

  852. he had given

  853. before.

  854. So he

  855. activates the

  856. promise.

  857. That's what

  858. he means.

  859. So when God

  860. remembers someone

  861. he's activating,

  862. he's putting

  863. into action

  864. what he had

  865. promised in

  866. the past.

  867. So then God

  868. remembered Rachel

  869. and God

  870. listened to her

  871. and opened her

  872. womb.

  873. She conceived

  874. and bore a

  875. son and said,

  876. God has taken

  877. away my

  878. reproach and

  879. my shame.

  880. This is her

  881. first one,

  882. remember,

  883. even though it's

  884. seven to eight

  885. two now,

  886. but actually this

  887. is her first one

  888. because the

  889. years was from

  890. the servants.

  891. And she

  892. called his name

  893. Joseph,

  894. which is a

  895. familiar name

  896. to us as we'll

  897. find out in

  898. later Genesis.

  899. And you think,

  900. oh,

  901. finally,

  902. she's got what

  903. she wants,

  904. right?

  905. Don't we have

  906. that moment when

  907. we finally get

  908. the job that we

  909. went,

  910. finally get the

  911. girl,

  912. finally get the

  913. guy,

  914. finally get the

  915. thing that we

  916. want?

  917. And you're

  918. like,

  919. now I am

  920. completely

  921. satisfied.

  922. You imagine

  923. Rachel going,

  924. I have now

  925. completely found

  926. contentment,

  927. God,

  928. I trust you

  929. for the rest

  930. of my life.

  931. Is that what

  932. she says?

  933. It is not.

  934. What she says

  935. is,

  936. may the Lord

  937. add to me

  938. another son.

  939. She can't

  940. get enough.

  941. She realized

  942. even though she's

  943. got what she

  944. wanted,

  945. it still doesn't

  946. give her the

  947. true satisfaction

  948. that she needs.

  949. She needs to

  950. keep going.

  951. Isn't that the

  952. same as us?

  953. We get,

  954. we finally get

  955. what we want

  956. and actually we

  957. just keep wanting

  958. more.

  959. Comparison.

  960. Envy.

  961. Leads us down

  962. this path,

  963. leads us to

  964. utter destruction

  965. and sad to say,

  966. this other son

  967. that she asks for,

  968. she eventually

  969. does get a few

  970. years later,

  971. but it leads to

  972. her death

  973. because as she

  974. bears Benjamin,

  975. Rachel dies.

  976. these misplaced

  977. desires,

  978. they will mess

  979. you up.

  980. They will lead

  981. you down a path

  982. that you can't

  983. come back from.

  984. What is this?

  985. This is choosing

  986. the flesh.

  987. This is choosing

  988. to not trust God.

  989. This is sin.

  990. And what that does

  991. is leads to our

  992. destruction.

  993. But just before,

  994. actually let's just

  995. catch a breath.

  996. We've got the 12

  997. kids coming up now.

  998. Israel is sorted.

  999. The tribe is ready.

  1000. But my goodness,

  1001. how did it happen?

  1002. We should take no

  1003. pride in how we

  1004. have the 12 tribes

  1005. of Israel.

  1006. It happened

  1007. because two

  1008. sisters were

  1009. trying to find

  1010. contentment in

  1011. purpose,

  1012. in a person,

  1013. and they end up

  1014. in this very

  1015. horrible war

  1016. that leads to

  1017. death.

  1018. The question is,

  1019. what hope do

  1020. we have?

  1021. as we

  1022. battle with

  1023. envy,

  1024. as we

  1025. battle

  1026. with comparison.

  1027. Let's put

  1028. ourselves in

  1029. the shoes of

  1030. Leah once again.

  1031. Henry Nouwen

  1032. says this,

  1033. self-rejection

  1034. is the greatest

  1035. enemy of the

  1036. spiritual life

  1037. because it

  1038. contradicts the

  1039. sacred voice

  1040. that calls us

  1041. beloved.

  1042. Imagine if Leah

  1043. just knew that,

  1044. that she was

  1045. loved.

  1046. all of this

  1047. comes from a

  1048. place where

  1049. she was

  1050. not loved.

  1051. Bring it down

  1052. to where we

  1053. live right now,

  1054. some of the

  1055. actions that we

  1056. see around the

  1057. world, the

  1058. consequences of

  1059. pain and death.

  1060. How much of

  1061. that can we

  1062. trace back to

  1063. the fact that

  1064. people just

  1065. don't feel

  1066. loved?

  1067. I would say

  1068. a high chance.

  1069. Henry Nouwen

  1070. continues,

  1071. the world

  1072. tells us we

  1073. are only as

  1074. good as our

  1075. performance,

  1076. our beauty

  1077. or our

  1078. popularity.

  1079. God tells us

  1080. our value

  1081. was settled

  1082. before the

  1083. foundation of

  1084. the world.

  1085. Why do you

  1086. come to

  1087. church?

  1088. Why do you

  1089. come and sing

  1090. some songs and

  1091. sit here and

  1092. listen?

  1093. We have the

  1094. gathering statements

  1095. and those are

  1096. all true, but

1097. I was to boil it

  1098. all down.

  1099. If every single

  1100. person who comes

  1101. into this room

  1102. and sits in the

  1103. presence of God

  1104. and hears the

  1105. word of truth

  1106. uttered over them

  1107. that they would

  1108. experience one

  1109. thing and that

  1110. they are loved.

  1111. Imagine if you

  1112. walked out of

  1113. here, head to

  1114. the elevator,

  1115. wait there, go

  1116. down for lunch,

  1117. but you're just

  1118. filled with this

  1119. profound sense

  1120. that my goodness,

  1121. I am loved.

  1122. I don't need to

  1123. go searching for

  1124. this.

  1125. I don't need to

  1126. go chase after

  1127. this.

  1128. I don't need to

  1129. envy.

  1130. I don't need to

  1131. compare because I

  1132. am deeply loved

  1133. and fully known

  1134. by God.

  1135. Wouldn't that be

  1136. beautiful?

  1137. But instead,

  1138. Dorothy Sayers

  1139. says this,

  1140. envy is the

  1141. religion of the

  1142. mediocre.

  1143. It comforts

  1144. them, it

  1145. responds to

  1146. the worries

  1147. that gnaw at

  1148. them deep

  1149. down, and

  1150. if it does

  1151. not calm

  1152. their hearts,

  1153. it offers a

  1154. surrogate peace

  1155. by allowing

  1156. them to

  1157. project their

  1158. own spiritual

  1159. poverty onto

  1160. others.

  1161. Envy is the

  1162. religion of the

  1163. mediocre.

  1164. I think the

  1165. message today is

  1166. to stop

  1167. envying.

  1168. Do not

  1169. covet.

  1170. Do not look

  1171. at someone

  1172. else and go,

  1173. I want that,

  1174. or if I can't

  1175. have that,

  1176. neither should

  1177. they.

  1178. That goes

  1179. directly against

  1180. the heart of

  1181. God.

  1182. It goes

  1183. directly against

  1184. what he desires

  1185. for you.

  1186. If he knew

  1187. that you were

  1188. truly loved,

  1189. if you knew

  1190. how loved you

  1191. were by him,

  1192. that is the

  1193. key to all

  1194. of this.

  1195. But there are

  1196. moments of hope

  1197. as you look at

  1198. this story.

  1199. Verse 22,

  1200. before Rachel

  1201. has her first

  1202. own baby,

  1203. then God

  1204. remembered Rachel

  1205. and God

  1206. listened to her

  1207. and opened her.

  1208. What does that

  1209. mean?

  1210. She stopped

  1211. taking matters

  1212. into her own

  1213. hands.

  1214. She's gone to

  1215. God.

  1216. He listened

  1217. to her,

  1218. which means

  1219. that she

  1220. spoke to

  1221. him.

  1222. The woman

  1223. who offered

  1224. her servant

  1225. as a way,

  1226. the woman

  1227. who tried

  1228. to get

  1229. a fertility

  1230. plant to

  1231. help her,

  1232. the one

  1233. who took

  1234. matters into

  1235. her own

  1236. hands,

  1237. finally realizes

  1238. the only way

  1239. to this

  1240. is to God.

  1241. She's not

  1242. perfect by

  1243. any stretch.

  1244. She still

  1245. doesn't fully

  1246. get it,

  1247. but she's

  1248. starting to

  1249. get it a

  1250. little bit.

  1251. There's another

  1252. example that

  1253. Leah,

  1254. even though she

  1255. is engrossed

  1256. in this battle,

  1257. she also

  1258. starts getting

  1259. it too.

  1260. If we go

  1261. back to the

  1262. end of 29,

  1263. she has

  1264. three kids.

  1265. Each time,

  1266. she puts

  1267. all the

  1268. hope in

  1269. that kid

  1270. to bring

  1271. her husband

  1272. back to

  1273. her,

  1274. and it

  1275. doesn't

  1276. happen.

  1277. But by

  1278. the fourth

  1279. one,

  1280. something

  1281. changes.

  1282. Remember,

  1283. after Reuben,

  1284. because the

  1285. Lord has

  1286. looked upon

  1287. my affliction,

  1288. my husband

  1289. will now

  1290. love me.

  1291. That's

  1292. number one.

  1293. Simeon

  1294. comes because

  1295. I am

  1296. hated.

  1297. He has

  1298. given me

  1299. this son.

  1300. And then

  1301. now this

  1302. time my

  1303. husband

  1304. will be

  1305. attached

  1306. to me.

  1307. But by

  1308. verse 35,

  1309. and she

  1310. conceived

  1311. again and

  1312. bore her

  1313. son.

  1314. This is the

  1315. fourth son.

  1316. This time

  1317. I will

  1318. praise the

  1319. Lord.

  1320. The first

  1321. three times

  1322. I hope

  1323. this does

  1324. it.

  1325. I hope

  1326. this brings

  1327. him back

  1328. to me.

  1329. And it

  1330. doesn't work

  1331. time after

  1332. time after

  1333. time again.

  1334. By the

  1335. fourth time

  1336. she starts

  1337. to get

  1338. it.

  1339. This

  1340. time I

  1341. will

  1342. praise

  1343. the

  1344. Lord.

  1345. God

  1346. still works

  1347. through

  1348. dysfunction,

  1349. misplaced

  1350. desires,

  1351. and you

  1352. see it

  1353. happening

  1354. right here.

  1355. This

  1356. time I

  1357. will

  1358. praise

  1359. the

  1360. Lord.

  1361. Therefore

  1362. she

  1363. called

  1364. his

  1365. name

  1366. Judah.

  1367. What

  1368. is the

  1369. significance

  1370. of

  1371. Judah?

  1372. Leah,

  1373. this

  1374. unloved,

  1375. ugly

  1376. woman

  1377. that was

  1378. passed

  1379. over time

  1380. and time

  1381. again,

  1382. ends up

  1383. being the

  1384. mother of

  1385. the Levites,

  1386. ends up

  1387. being the

  1388. great,

  1389. great,

  1390. great,

  1391. great

  1392. grandmother

  1393. of King

  1394. David,

  1395. ends up

  1396. being the

  1397. great,

  1398. great,

  1399. great,

  1400. great,

  1401. great,

  1402. great,

  1403. great,

  1404. great,

  1405. great,

  1406. great

  1407. grandmother

  1408. of Jesus

  1409. himself.

  1410. Can you

  1411. see woven

  1412. into this

  1413. story so

  1414. subtly is

  1415. you see when

  1416. someone finally

  1417. chooses to

  1418. trust in

  1419. the Lord,

  1420. when someone

  1421. finally chooses

  1422. to surrender

  1423. the idols

  1424. that they

  1425. battle with

  1426. and they

  1427. choose to

  1428. give praise

  1429. and trust

  1430. to God?

  1431. Salvation

  1432. comes.

  1433. Down this

  1434. line,

  1435. not Rachel's

  1436. line.

  1437. Growing up,

  1438. the uncles

  1439. and aunties

  1440. would have

  1441. been like,

  1442. well,

  1443. Rachel's

  1444. definitely

  1445. the one

  1446. who's

  1447. going to

  1448. be going

  1449. places.

  1450. Leah has

  1451. weak eyes,

  1452. she can't

  1453. even see

  1454. properly.

  1455. So you'd

  1456. have thought,

  1457. oh,

  1458. this covenant

  1459. of family

  1460. is definitely

  1461. going to go

  1462. through Rachel,

  1463. it's going

  1464. to be the

  1465. strong,

  1466. it's going

  1467. to be the

  1468. highly

  1469. accomplished,

  1470. it's going

  1471. to be the

  1472. beautiful.

  1473. But time

  1474. and time

  1475. again,

  1476. God says,

  1477. the way of

  1478. the world

  1479. is not the

  1480. way of

  1481. the kingdom.

  1482. In fact,

  1483. I'm going

  1484. to choose

  1485. exactly what

  1486. you don't

  1487. think I

  1488. will choose.

  1489. The way of

  1490. the kingdom

  1491. of God

  1492. is upside

  1493. down.

  1494. And yet,

  1495. we still

  1496. rely on the

  1497. things of

  1498. this world.

  1499. We still

  1500. try to

  1501. accumulate

  1502. and collect

  1503. as many

  1504. rewards

  1505. and awards

  1506. and certificates

  1507. and letters

  1508. after our

  1509. names as

  1510. possible,

  1511. thinking those

  1512. are the

  1513. things that

  1514. are going

  1515. to earn

  1516. us

  1517. recognition,

  1518. those are

  1519. the things

  1520. that are

  1521. going to

  1522. earn us

  1523. love,

  1524. and yet

  1525. what we

  1526. see here,

  1527. the tables

  1528. turn time

  1529. and time

  1530. again,

  1531. and what

  1532. you see is

  1533. God chooses

  1534. the unchosen.

  1535. Jesus himself,

  1536. coming from the

  1537. line of Judah,

  1538. ends up being

  1539. despised and

  1540. rejected.

  1541. Isaiah 52

  1542. says this,

  1543. our savior,

  1544. you could not

  1545. even look at

  1546. because he was

  1547. not much to

  1548. look at.

  1549. how much do

  1550. we put our

  1551. hope in the

  1552. things that

  1553. we think

  1554. look great

  1555. will help

  1556. us further

  1557. our lives

  1558. and our

  1559. accomplishments,

  1560. and yet in

  1561. the midst

  1562. of this,

  1563. we see

  1564. someone breaking

  1565. the cycle

  1566. of sin,

  1567. of envy,

  1568. of comparison

  1569. because he

  1570. who had it

  1571. all emptied

  1572. himself taking

  1573. the form of

  1574. a servant,

  1575. he breaks

  1576. the cycle.

  1577. Jesus breaks

  1578. the cycle.

  1579. I'll finish

  1580. by going

  1581. back to

  1582. Saul and

  1583. David.

  1584. Remember,

  1585. Saul takes

  1586. it personally.

  1587. This song,

  1588. he doesn't

  1589. like the

  1590. lyrics to

  1591. this song.

  1592. But

  1593. interestingly,

  1594. Saul has

  1595. a son,

  1596. and in the

  1597. same chapter

  1598. in 1 Samuel

  1599. 18,

  1600. just before

  1601. the song,

  1602. you see

  1603. his son

  1604. Jonathan

  1605. having just

  1606. this beautiful

  1607. relationship,

  1608. friendship,

  1609. with David.

  1610. To the point

  1611. where there's

  1612. one moment

  1613. when Jonathan

  1614. sees David

  1615. and cares

  1616. for him

  1617. and brings

  1618. him in,

  1619. Jonathan

  1620. actually takes

  1621. off his

  1622. own robe

  1623. and puts

  1624. it around

  1625. David.

  1626. Remember,

  1627. David is a

  1628. shepherd's

  1629. boy.

  1630. Jonathan

  1631. is the

  1632. heir apparent.

  1633. Jonathan

  1634. is going

  1635. to be king.

  1636. And yet,

  1637. in that

  1638. moment of

  1639. selflessness,

  1640. of love,

  1641. without a

  1642. hint of

  1643. envy,

  1644. just imagine

  1645. a second

  1646. from where

  1647. Jonathan

  1648. sits.

  1649. Everyone knows

  1650. he's going

  1651. to be king

  1652. in the future.

  1653. And then

  1654. this David,

  1655. this young

  1656. boy,

  1657. walks in.

  1658. And people

  1659. are singing

  1660. this song

  1661. that are

  1662. saying how

  1663. this David

  1664. is actually

  1665. better than

  1666. your dad.

  1667. What do you

  1668. think is going

  1669. through Jonathan's

  1670. mind?

  1671. What if we

  1672. were Jonathan?

  1673. We were like,

  1674. whoa,

  1675. this guy's

  1676. going to

  1677. take my

  1678. job.

  1679. This guy's

  1680. going to

  1681. take my

  1682. kingdom.

  1683. But what

  1684. does Jonathan

  1685. do instead?

  1686. He takes

  1687. off his robe

  1688. and gives

  1689. it to David.

  1690. Breaks the

  1691. cycle of envy,

  1692. breaks the cycle

  1693. of comparison,

  1694. breaks the

  1695. cycle of

  1696. jealousy.

  1697. We sit

  1698. here today

  1699. as recipients

  1700. of a robe

  1701. that belongs

  1702. to a king

  1703. but has now

  1704. been placed

  1705. around us.

  1706. Can you just

  1707. imagine for a

  1708. second?

  1709. I know that

  1710. we're all in

  1711. just casual

  1712. gear here,

  1713. but just imagine

  1714. for a moment

  1715. that you have

  1716. a robe

  1717. placed around

  1718. you that you

  1719. do not

  1720. deserve.

  1721. how silly

  1722. that feels,

  1723. but yet

  1724. this robe

  1725. is the most

  1726. expensive thing

  1727. that you'll

  1728. ever touch.

  1729. You don't

  1730. deserve this.

  1731. You can never

  1732. afford this

  1733. robe,

  1734. and yet

  1735. it's yours.

  1736. Can you

  1737. imagine wearing

  1738. this robe

  1739. and being

  1740. filled with

  1741. the gratitude

  1742. of having

  1743. this,

  1744. yet looking

  1745. across and

  1746. going,

  1747. well,

  1748. I wish

  1749. I had

  1750. that.

  1751. Oh,

  1752. the robe

  1753. looks better

  1754. on that

  1755. person than

  1756. on me.

  1757. you won't

  1758. care because

  1759. you realize

  1760. you did

  1761. nothing to

  1762. deserve this

  1763. robe that

  1764. you've got

  1765. on you.

  1766. Just like

  1767. Jonathan,

  1768. as the

  1769. prince gives

  1770. up his

  1771. robe for

  1772. David,

  1773. the prince

  1774. of heaven

  1775. himself gives

  1776. up his

  1777. robe for

  1778. us and

  1779. breaks the

  1780. cycle of

  1781. envy,

  1782. of discontentment,

  1783. of comparison.

  1784. We're going

  1785. to finish

  1786. now by just

  1787. asking ourselves,

  1788. asking the

  1789. Holy Spirit

  1790. to show us

  1791. what are the

  1792. misplaced

  1793. desires in

  1794. our hearts.

  1795. And we all

  1796. have them.

  1797. They're not

  1798. bad things.

  1799. Honestly,

  1800. every parent

  1801. in the room,

  1802. one of the

  1803. biggest

  1804. misplaced

  1805. desires is

  1806. what?

  1807. Our

  1808. children.

  1809. We want

  1810. what's best

  1811. for our

  1812. children.

  1813. We want

  1814. them to

  1815. do well.

  1816. But we

  1817. put them

  1818. above God.

  1819. And then

  1820. when things

  1821. don't go

  1822. well,

  1823. we can't

  1824. sleep at

  1825. night.

  1826. We put

  1827. our

  1828. trust

  1829. in

  1830. something

  1831. else.

  1832. Maybe

  1833. it's

  1834. your

  1835. work.

  1836. Maybe

  1837. what keeps

  1838. you up

  1839. at night

  1840. is your

  1841. work.

  1842. Because

  1843. you're

  1844. afraid that

  1845. if you

  1846. don't do

  1847. what you

  1848. need to

  1849. do,

  1850. you won't

  1851. climb up

  1852. as fast

  1853. as you

  1854. want to

  1855. climb up,

  1856. or you

  1857. may even

  1858. lose the

  1859. job that

  1860. you believe

  1861. that God

  1862. gave you

  1863. in the

  1864. first place.

  1865. And if

  1866. God

  1867. gave it

  1868. to you,

  1869. then

  1870. he's

  1871. the one

  1872. who's

  1873. in

  1874. control,

  1875. right?

  1876. Or it's

  1877. a

  1878. relationship.

  1879. Maybe

  1880. there's

  1881. a

  1882. relationship

  1883. that you're

  1884. just

  1885. terrified

  1886. of

  1887. losing,

  1888. or that

  1889. you're

  1890. just

  1891. desperate

  1892. to want

  1893. to have.

  1894. Well,

  1895. I would

  1896. sincerely

  1897. ask you,

  1898. is that

  1899. a misplaced

  1900. desire?

  1901. Is that

  1902. a disordered

  1903. love?

  1904. Let's

  1905. spend a

  1906. moment now

  1907. just to

  1908. reflect

  1909. on that.

  1910. I can

  1911. invite you

  1912. just to

  1913. close your

  1914. eyes,

  1915. bow your

  1916. heads,

  1917. whatever

  1918. posture

  1919. that you

  1920. feel is

  1921. appropriate

  1922. for you.

  1923. And let

  1924. me lead

  1925. us in

  1926. a

  1927. prayer.

  1928. God,

  1929. we keep

  1930. running in

  1931. circles.

  1932. we keep

  1933. chasing

  1934. after

  1935. things

  1936. that we

  1937. think

  1938. will

  1939. give

  1940. us

  1941. true

  1942. contentment.

  1943. We

  1944. keep

  1945. keeping

  1946. score,

  1947. comparing

  1948. what we

  1949. have to

  1950. what others

  1951. have.

  1952. But we

  1953. can see

  1954. from your

  1955. word how

  1956. ridiculous

  1957. that looks.

  1958. we

  1959. who

  1960. were

  1961. orphans,

  1962. who

  1963. were

  1964. blind,

  1965. lost,

  1966. and

  1967. dead,

  1968. now sit

  1969. in the

  1970. most high

  1971. place with

  1972. a robe

  1973. that does

  1974. not belong

  1975. to us.

  1976. How sad

  1977. it is that

  1978. our hearts

  1979. would even

  1980. try to

  1981. covet and

  1982. envy.

  1983. love

  1984. love

  1985. enough.

  1986. But we

  1987. confess that

  1988. it comes

  1989. from a

  1990. place of

  1991. not knowing

  1992. your love

  1993. enough.

  1994. So,

  1995. Holy Spirit,

  1996. I ask that you

  1997. would just

  1998. highlight to

  1999. us

  2000. whether

  2001. there is

  2002. any

  2003. greed of

  2004. Laban,

  2005. deceit of

  2006. Jacob,

  2007. resentment

  2008. of Leah,

  2009. and

  2010. desires of

  2011. Rachel that

  2012. are not

  2013. of you.

  2014. we

  2015. sit as

  2016. recipients of

  2017. your grace.

  2018. We sit as

  2019. children who

  2020. are fully

  2021. loved.

  2022. it's like

  2023. you when

  2024. you opened

  2025. up the

  2026. heavens before

  2027. Jesus had

  2028. done a

  2029. single thing

  2030. and you

  2031. said,

  2032. this is my

  2033. son with

  2034. whom I am

  2035. well pleased,

  2036. my beloved.

  2037. today would

  2038. you declare the

  2039. same thing

  2040. over us,

  2041. remind us

  2042. of that

  2043. truth.

  2044. to be

  2045. fully known

  2046. and fully

  2047. loved is

  2048. what we

  2049. yearn for,

  2050. is the

  2051. desire that

  2052. we have,

  2053. but do

  2054. not let that

  2055. desire be

  2056. misplaced.

  2057. We place

  2058. that desire

  2059. unto you

  2060. and only

  2061. you.

  2062. may

  2063. may

2064. Before we respond in worship, I'd just like to share,

2065. if any of you are sat here struggling with comparison and envy and discontentment,

2066. and you have been keeping score,

2067. keeping score with those around you, keeping score with your family.

2068. Can I ask you to try for a moment and utter the words that Leah says?

2069. This time, I will praise the Lord.

2070. This time, I will trust the Lord.

2071. Knowing that small act of faith will break that cycle

2072. that will lead to salvation, that will lead to freedom,

2073. that will lead to contentment.

2074. I'm going to hand the time over to Paul to lead us in a song of worship,

2075. but if you feel as though you need prayer,

2076. then there are a few of us up here.

2077. Feel free to come up and we'll happily, gladly pray for you.

2078. may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may
