  1. All of you heard the big news last week that

  2. after founding this church 43 years ago, Kay and I

  3. are stepping aside for the next generation of leadership. And

  4. I announced it last weekend, Kay and I spoke together

  5. and that our church had called Pastor Andy Wood to

  6. become Saddleback's new senior pastor in September. Next weekend, June 18, 19,

  7. Andy and Stacey Wood are gonna be here at all

  8. of our services, and Kay and I are gonna sit

  9. on stage and interview them, the next generation senior pastor.

  10. It's gonna be a great time. So I hope you'll

  11. come back for that. Then the following weekend, I told

  12. you I was gonna do this, June 25 and 26,

  13. I'm going to explain in detail what I'm going to

  14. be doing post-saddleback, leading the global campaign called Finishing the Task.

  15. It's a campaign that I've been asked to lead for

  16. the next decade, by the Finishing the Task Coalition, which

  17. is already composed of about 1,600 mission agencies and denominations.

  18. And it's gonna grow exponentially from that. So I'm gonna

  19. be busy for the next decade. Don't miss that weekend

  20. when I tell you all we're gonna be doing in

  21. finishing the task in the next 10 years. Now, in

  22. preparation for that message on finishing the task in a

  23. couple weeks, what I wanna do this weekend is do

  24. a preliminary message on misplaced priorities, misplaced priorities. Most of

  25. you know that Saddleback Church was the first church on

  26. the internet way back in 1992, long before there was

  27. Internet Explorer or Google or any of that kind of stuff.

  28. We were using FTP and Gopher and Mosaic, and I

  29. started the first website for pastors, pastors.com, almost 30 years ago. Now,

  30. added to the fact that about 1.2 million pastors have

  31. been trained by Purpose Driven in 165 countries, that means

  32. that every day I get hundreds of calls and letters

  33. and emails from pastors, literally every day. And I'll tell

  34. you this right now, the number one problem I've discovered

  35. among church leaders today is discouragement. During the past two years,

  36. during the pandemic, I've spent a lot of time talking

  37. to discouraged pastors and talking them out of resigning for

  38. a lot of reasons. They say, Rick, I feel tired.

  39. I feel discouraged. I feel ready to quit. I feel

  40. like I'm just going through the motions. A lot of

  41. people have felt that way. But you know what? As

  42. I listened to all their stories of these pastors, I've

  43. come to the conclusion that one of the most common

  44. causes of this discouragement is misplaced priorities. They end up

  45. majoring on minor issues. They waste energy on secondary issues.

  46. They get caught up in doing what everybody else wants

  47. them to do instead of what God has called them

  48. to do. And they end up trying to do too much.

  49. It's no wonder they're tired because the ultimate gets crowded

  50. out by the urgent. Now, The reason I feel called

  51. to talk to you today about this issue of misplaced

  52. priorities is because I have the sneaking suspicion that you

  53. have misplaced priorities too. And that's dragging you down and

  54. it's causing fatigue and frustration in your life. Now the

  55. fact is you guys, so much of what we spend

  56. our time on isn't gonna matter in five years. Today,

  57. Christians are given first class allegiance to second class causes.

  58. And those causes, whether they're personal or they're cultural or

  59. they're social or political, they are bound to ultimately disappoint you.

  60. So what I want to do is talk about that

  61. today and look at God's word. What does God have

  62. to say about our priorities and our purposes? And let

  63. me remind you of three facts of life. First, you

  64. can't do it all, okay? You figured that out, I hope,

  65. by now. You can't do it all. But the second

  66. thing is, God doesn't expect you to do it all.

  67. That's good news. And number three, there are only a

  68. few things worth doing in the first place. One of

  69. my mentors, besides Billy Graham, you know, he was my

  70. mentor since I was 18, was John Stott. In fact,

  71. Billy was the guy who introduced me to John Stott,

  72. a famous pastor in London, England. And one of the

  73. things that John Stott said to me as a young

  74. man was this, Rick, he said, selection is the name

  75. of the game. Selection is the name of the game.

  76. He said, if you don't get control of your time

  77. and priorities, you're not gonna get control of anything else.

  78. You're not gonna have time in your ministry to care

  79. about and get involved in every little cause that people

  80. want you to join. So focus on the great commandment,

  81. focus on the great commissions. you know, right before both

  82. John Stott died and Billy Graham died, I made personal

  83. trips back to see them, flew to London, flew to Charlotte.

  84. And I just wanted to see them before they passed away.

  85. And I made those trips while they were bed fast,

  86. but they were both still focused in the end of

  87. their life, still focused on what really mattered most in

  88. life and in ministry. You know, years ago, I spoke

  89. at an SBC convention, and I think the theme was

  90. the highest power for the greatest task. That was the

  91. theme that year, the highest power for the greatest task.

  92. And as I thought about speaking on that theme, I

  93. realized we only get the highest power when we're doing

  94. the greatest task. God is not obligated to empower or

  95. energize us to do our own thing. God has no

  96. obligation to equip us or empower us to do our

  97. to-do list of priorities. He empowers his task, not ours.

  98. Now I've talked to you about this many times. Jesus

  99. lived a purpose-driven life. Jesus' very first recorded words, the

  100. first recorded words spoken was when he was only 12

  101. years old. He sat at the temple and he said,

  102. I must be about my father's business. Even at that

  103. early age, as a preteen, he already knew his priorities

  104. and his purpose. I don't know many 12 years old

  105. who would say, I gotta be about my father's business.

  106. But Jesus knew his purpose that early in life. And

  107. then at the end of his life, when he prays

  108. in the Garden of Gethsemane, in his last words before

  109. he goes to the cross, Jesus said this in his

  110. prayer to the father. Father, I have finished the work

  111. that you gave me to do. And that's what I

  112. call a purpose-driven life. The bookends on either side of

  113. his life, being able to say early in life, 12

  114. years of age, I've got to be about my father's business.

  115. And being able to say at the end, I finished

  116. the work you gave me to do. I want you

  117. to be able to say that with the rest of

  118. your life. And that's why I want to talk to

  119. you about priorities today. You know, the apostle Paul is

  120. another example of being purpose-driven. In Acts chapter 20, verse 24,

    Acts 20:24

  121. Paul says this. I consider my life worth nothing, nothing

  122. to me, if only I may finish the race and

  123. finish the task that the Lord Jesus has given me.

  124. And what was that task he was called to finish?

  125. The task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace,

  126. spreading the good news as far and as wide as possible.

  127. So Paul says, my life isn't worth anything unless I

  128. use it to finish the task I was given. Then

  129. at the end of his life, Paul says this in

  130. 2 Timothy 4, verse seven. I fought the good fight,

  131. I finished the race, and I've kept the faith. Both

  132. Jesus and Paul refused to be distracted from what mattered most.

  133. Both kept their purpose and their priorities crystal clear throughout

  134. their entire lives. So if you want your life to count,

  135. if you want your career to have an impact, if

  136. you want your ministry to make a difference, if you

  137. want our church to keep seeing lives changed by the

  138. thousands as we've seen over all these years, the starting

  139. point is to clarify what matters most in your life,

  140. and then reorder your priorities accordingly. So how do we

  141. do that? Well, as I've studied scripture, I think it

  142. includes three different things. And we see these three things

  143. in things that Jesus actually said, three statements of Christ.

  144. Number one, first, we have to lay aside our agendas

  145. and focus on God's agenda in the world. We must

  146. adopt God's agenda. That's the first thing we have to do,

  147. to live a life of purpose and priority. We have

  148. to adopt God's agenda for our lives, not our own agenda.

  149. So what is God's agenda in the world? Well, it's

  150. not what you think it is. God's agenda is not

  151. an economic agenda. God's agenda is not an international agenda. agenda.

  152. It's not a political agenda. God is not trying to

  153. save any particular group or even any particular nation. God

  154. is not a national God. God's agenda, listen, is what

  155. the Bible calls the kingdom of God. He's building a

  156. family of redeemed individuals from every nation, from every ethnic background.

  157. He's building a redeemed kingdom of God. Matthew 24, verse

    Matthew 24:14

  158. 14 is an incredible verse you need to understand if

  159. you wanna get in with God's agenda. Matthew 24, 14,

  160. this is the words of Jesus. He says this, the

  161. good news about the kingdom, God's agenda, will be preached

  162. throughout the world. Not just in America, not just in

  163. some other country, preached throughout the world so that all nations,

  164. circle the word all, A-L-L. God cares about all nations.

  165. He doesn't care any more about America than he cares

  166. about every other. He died for the world, not for

  167. one nation, so that all nations will hear it. And

  168. then the end will come. History is moving toward a climax.

  169. And he says the end's not gonna come until everybody

  170. God wants to hear has had a chance to hear

  171. till all nations have heard. It's not gonna happen. History

  172. is moving toward a climax. You can debate prophecy. You

  173. can get out your charts and maps. But Jesus said this,

  174. I'm not coming back until everybody I want to hear

  175. the gospel has heard the gospel. Now, The kingdom of

  176. God is the major theme of Jesus' ministry. The word

  177. kingdom is used 157 times in the New Testament. Did

  178. you know that? Kingdom was Jesus' favorite description of what

  179. God is doing in the world. In fact, go and

  180. read all of Jesus' 38 parables and Most of them

  181. or majority of them start off the kingdom of heaven

  182. or the kingdom of God is like. It's what Jesus

  183. cared about more than anything else. That's his agenda, building

  184. the kingdom of God. Not my reputation, not building my career,

  185. not building my city, not building my business but building

  186. the kingdom of God. So what is the kingdom of God?

  187. It is God's plan for history. It is God's people

  188. fulfilling God's purposes on God's planet, that's the king of God.

  189. God's agenda is the redemption of the whole world. Now

  190. listen very closely. If you want God's blessing on your life,

  191. if you want God's power in your life, if you

  192. want God's anointing through your life, you must care about

  193. what God cares about most. And what does God care

  194. about most? More than anything else, he wants his lost

  195. children found. That's the greatest task. The whole reason God

  196. created a universe is he wanted a family. And that

  197. is his number one goal in life, creating his family,

  198. his kingdom. That's what we've been doing here at Saddleback

  199. for decades. You know, the last 43 years of growing

  200. this Saddleback family from just Kay and I to as

  201. many of there are today, it hadn't been easy. I

  202. remember we went 15 years without a building. In fact,

  203. we grew to over 10,000 people in attendance every week

  204. without a building. We used 79 different locations. That meant

  205. setting up and taking down everything every week for 13 years.

  206. There's no glory in that. It was just a lot

  207. of hard work. And you know what? Here's a little secret.

  208. The bigger you get, the more problems you have. I've

  209. often been asked by the media, Rick, what keeps you going?

  210. What keeps you motivated? What kept you going for 43 years?

  211. And the answer is really simple. I'm addicted to change lives.

  212. I am addicted to change lives. Every one of those 56,000

  213. new believers we baptized over 43 years, they matter to God.

  214. Every one of them matters. You know, people have often

  215. said to me, you know, Rick, you're just into numbers.

  216. And I will reply, every number represents a person. And

  217. every number has a name. And every name has a

  218. story behind it, a story of transformation. Every number represents

  219. a person that Jesus said his blood for. Yes, we

  220. count people because people count. I had a guy tell

  221. me one time, I don't believe in counting attendance. I said, sir,

  222. do you count the offering? He goes, yeah. I go, oh.

  223. I said, then what you're saying is that money's more

  224. important than people because we count what counts to us.

  225. Why did we take an entire decade here at Saddleback

  226. Church to send out 26,869 of our members on mission?

  227. Our own members went to every nation in the world,

  228. 197 nations. And in our peace plan, they planted churches

  229. and they E, equipped leaders and they A, assisted the

  230. poor and they C, cared for the sick and they E,

  231. educated the next generation through our peace plan. Why did

  232. we invest all that time? Why did we invest all

  233. that energy? Why did we invest all that money? Why

  234. has this church given over $ 1 billion to kingdom causes

  235. since it started? The answer is real simple. Because we

  236. kept our priorities and our purposes clear. We didn't get

  237. caught up in controversies and cultural issues. You see, the

  238. bottom line is this. People matter to God. They will

  239. always matter to God. They always have mattered to God.

  240. They matter more than anything else. God has never made

  241. a person he didn't love. God has never made a

  242. person he didn't have a purpose for. God has never

  243. made a person he didn't want in heaven. The Bible

  244. says God is not willing that any should perish. How

  245. many is any? He wants everybody in his kingdom. That

  246. any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. That,

  247. my friends, is God's agenda. And anything less is an

  248. inferior man-made agenda. Think about this. How much does God

  249. care about lost people? If you want to know, look

  250. at the cross. With arms outstretched and nail-pierced hands and

  251. blood flowing down, he's saying, I love people this much.

  252. This much, and every drop of blood was saying, I

  253. love you, I love you, I love you. I love

  254. you so much it hurts. On the cross, Christ is saying,

  255. I'd rather die than live without you. That's how much

  256. people matter to God. That's God's agenda. Not anything else.

  257. Not build this or that or make America greater. God's

  258. agenda is people coming into his kingdom. The book of

  259. Revelation says that one day, We're gonna worship Christ with

  260. a song. Did you know that? And let me read

  261. you the words of that song. They're there on your outline.

  262. Revelation chapter five, verse nine. We're gonna sing this song

  263. in heaven one day. We're gonna sing, with your blood,

  264. you purchased men for God. You purchased men, obviously, and women,

  265. that's humanity, for God from every tribe and every language

  266. and every people and every nation. That's God's agenda. If

  267. you don't have that as your agenda, you don't have

  268. God's agenda for your life. Now leave that verse up

  269. there on the screen for just a minute. I want

  270. you to notice that that verse tells us that God's

  271. kingdom is multinational. Every language, every people, every nation, every tribe.

  272. God's kingdom is worldwide. God's kingdom is multi-ethnic. God loves diversity.

  273. It was his idea. In fact, the ultimate argument against

  274. racism is God. The person who says, I don't like

  275. people who don't look like me is basically saying, God,

  276. you made a mistake. You should have made everybody like me.

  277. That's the ultimate insult to God. It was God's idea.

  278. If you don't like diversity, you're going to hate heaven

  279. because most people aren't going to look like you in heaven.

  280. Did you know that? God's agenda is the redemption of

  281. the whole world, everybody, everywhere. If you just have a

  282. community vision, if you just have a state vision, if

  283. you just have a national vision, your vision is too small.

  284. You know, one of the problems I think that we

  285. have is this, the longer you're a Christian, the less

  286. you think like an unbeliever. And the longer you're a Christian,

  287. the more we forget how good the good news really is.

  288. We forget how hopeless we felt before we were saved.

  289. So how do you get over that? You know, when

  290. I get discouraged, when I get tired, when I feel

  291. like giving up, you know what I do? I go

  292. watch a baptism because it reminds me of the changes

  293. that God made in my life. And it reminds me

  294. of the changes that I've seen in literally tens of

  295. thousands of other lives. So the first step in having

  296. the correct priorities and the correct purposes for our lives

  297. is we have to adopt God's agenda for our lives.

  298. And his agenda is the kingdom of God, nothing less.

  299. Number two, the second thing we have to do, and

  300. we find these in the words of Christ, we have

  301. to abandon all distractions. Adopt his agenda, abandon all distractions.

  302. The secret of an effective life, as I told you,

  303. is one word, focus. Focus. Paul told the Corinthians in

  304. 1 Corinthians 7 35, do whatever will help you serve

  305. the Lord best. Circle that. Do whatever the Lord will

  306. help you serve the Lord best with as few distractions

  307. as possible. In other words, you just can't tack on

  308. God's agenda to everything else you wanna do in life.

  309. You have to decide, Am I gonna focus on my

  310. plans or am I gonna focus on God's plans? See,

  311. Jesus commanded this. Seek ye first the kingdom of God.

  312. Seek ye first and his righteousness and all these things

  313. will be added unto you. What are you seeking first

  314. in your life right now? Well, you say, how do

  315. I know what I'm seeking first? Real simple. Look at

  316. how you spend your money, spend your time. What do

  317. you spend the most of your time on? What do

  318. you spend the most of your money on? Show me

  319. your calendar and show me your credit card statement and

  320. I'll tell you what you're seeking first in life. Because

  321. the way you spend your time and the way you

  322. spend your money reveals your priorities. As I said, Jesus

  323. told us to pray, thy kingdom come, thy will be

  324. done on earth as it is in heaven. Now, why

  325. did Jesus tell us to pray that? Well, he wouldn't

  326. tell us to pray it if it was already being done. Okay,

  327. let me explain this. In heaven, God's will is done perfectly,

  328. it's done completely, it's done instantly, it's done all the time,

  329. and it's done with a good attitude. None of that's

  330. true on earth. Here on earth, God's will is done incompletely.

  331. It's done often with mixed motivations. Sometimes it's not done

  332. at all. Sometimes it's done with a grudge. It's done seldom.

  333. Every day, God has a will for my life. Satan

  334. has a will for my life, and my will is

  335. choosing God's will or Satan's will. God says, pray thy

  336. will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  337. What is that? Say, God, I want your will to

  338. be done completely, instantly, joyfully, continuously, completely, here on earth.

  339. That's what God wants. We adopt God's agenda, we avoid

  340. and get rid of all distractions. You know, I'm constantly asked,

  341. how has Saddleback continued to keep growing consistently year after

  342. year after year after year, you know, leading in baptisms,

  343. leading in evangelism, leading in discipleship, leading in church planting?

  344. How do we do this year after year after year

  345. after year? with all of the cultural and political changes

  346. we've been through. I mean, just look around. While denominations

  347. and other churches are often declining in evangelistic effectiveness, reaching

  348. fewer people, how does Saddleback keep leading and increasing in

  349. the number of people coming to Christ and being baptized

  350. year after year after year? The answer is real simple.

  351. We refuse to be distracted. Personally, I refuse to let

  352. anything else become more important than the salvation of other

  353. people and the discipling of other people and the equipping

  354. for ministry of other people and the sending out of

  355. other people on mission. That's all we do. We bring

  356. them in, we build them up, we train them for

  357. ministry and we send them out on mission. We bring

  358. them in, build them up, train them for, send them out,

  359. bring them in, build them up, train them for, send

  360. them out, bring them in, build them up, train them for,

  361. send them out, rawhide. We just keep doing what we've

  362. been doing year after year after year. We just try

  363. to do it better every year. We stay focused on

  364. God's five eternal purposes. What are God's five eternal purposes?

  365. They are the five verbs in the great commandment and

  366. the great commission. Two verbs in the great commission, two

  367. words in the great commandment, and three verbs in the

  368. great commission. We've built our church on these things. But

  369. it's not enough, friends, just to care about the people

  370. in your pathway, in your life. in your community. We

  371. have to think globally because that's God's agenda. Acts 1,

  372. verse eight may be the most misquoted verse in the Bible.

  373. I hear people pray it all the time where Jesus says,

  374. but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes

  375. upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem

  376. then Judea, then Samaria, and then the uttermost parts of

  377. the world. That's not what it says. That's a misquoting

  378. of that verse. It doesn't say, you're gonna be my

  379. witnesses in Jerusalem, then Judea. Jerusalem is your own city.

  380. Judea is like the county around you. Samaria is like

  381. the people of different cultures who live in your area,

  382. and then the rest of the world's the rest of

  383. the world. It's not then, then, then. It's and, and,

  384. and in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria and the uttermost

  385. parts of the world. It is not sequential. It is simultaneous.

  386. In other words, we have to do it all at once.

  387. It's no sin in being a small church. It is

  388. a sin in having a small vision. And you have

  389. to have global and local vision at the same time.

  390. You have to have glocal vision, global and local, in

  391. Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria and out of most parts

  392. of the world. A lot of churches say, well, let's

  393. just reach our community. Once we reach our community, we'll

  394. go after our county. Once we reach our county, we'll

  395. go after our state. Once we reach our state, we'll

  396. go after the rest of the world. That's not what

  397. the Bible says. Jesus said you'll do it all at

  398. the same time. You have to be global and local

  399. at the same time. So let me ask you, what

  400. is distracting you personally from fulfilling the kingdom of God?

  401. You think this is just for missionaries? You think this

  402. is just for pastors? God, if you are claiming to

  403. be a follower of Christ, God is calling you to

  404. build the kingdom of God. What's distracting you from seeking

  405. first the kingdom of God? You know, I sat down,

  406. this afternoon and I made a list of common distractions

  407. from the kingdom of God. Because Satan loves for you

  408. to do good things as long as you're distracted from

  409. God's agenda. He doesn't care, you can do all kinds

  410. of good things as long as you don't care about

  411. what God cares about most. So here's some common distractions

  412. from the kingdom of God. Number one, politics. Does this

  413. sound familiar? Could be either national politics or it could

  414. be denominational politics. God has not called us to save America.

  415. He's called us to save Americans, but he's also called

  416. us to save Mexicans and Canadians and everybody else in

  417. the world. So you just have to settle that issue.

  418. Are you called to be a politician? Are you called

  419. to be a follower of Christ? You know, the disciples

  420. repeatedly tried to get Jesus to be involved in politics.

  421. But Jesus said this, I want you to listen very closely.

  422. My kingdom is not of this world. Well, if his

  423. kingdom is part of this world, that's not my priority either.

  424. My kingdom, the kingdom of God, is not of this world.

  425. Another thing that causes us distractions, common current controversy. And

  426. of course, there's a controversy of the week in the

  427. newspaper and social media. But a lot of issues, honestly, folks,

  428. are like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. I remember

  429. reading in history reports that Nero fiddled while Rome burned.

  430. And you know what my fear is? That we'll fiddle

  431. around while the world goes to hell, worried about current

  432. controversies that aren't even gonna matter in 50 years. Here's

  433. another one that distracts us from the kingdom of God,

  434. comparing or criticizing other believers. Oh my goodness, we've made

  435. this an indoor sport in the church today. With the

  436. advent of social media, it is a platform from anybody

  437. to criticize anybody. That's not going to help our church grow.

  438. It's not going to help anybody else's church grow. In fact,

  439. 2 Corinthians 10, 12 says comparing is foolish. It's stupid.

  440. You should never compare yourself to anybody else for two reasons. One,

  441. You'll always find people who are doing a better job

  442. than you and you get discouraged. And two, you'll always

  443. find people you're doing a better job than and you

  444. get full of pride. Either way, you're dead in the water.

  445. You're benched. You're set on the sideline. God says, don't compare.

  446. Don't compare. Here's another one. Common distraction from the kingdom

  447. of God. Expecting non-Christians to act like Christians before they are.

  448. That's impossible. But we all get upset by people out

  449. in culture who don't act like God wants us to act. Well,

  450. the book of Romans says they can't act that way.

  451. because they don't have the power of the Spirit in them.

  452. They don't have the power to change. So when you

  453. ask people or expect people to have Christian values before

  454. they become Christians, it isn't going to happen. When you

  455. ask them to act like Christians before they're Christians, it

  456. isn't going to happen. Let me just say it as

  457. clearly as I know how to say it. The non-believers

  458. who are out there in society and culture, they're not

  459. the enemy. They're the mission field. And if you see

  460. them in the enemy, you're not gonna see them as

  461. a mission field. You're gonna see them as your cultural enemy.

  462. That is a distraction. Here's another one. Living in fear

  463. of criticism, especially now today on social media. It'll paralyze you.

  464. It'll keep you from launching out. It'll keep you from

  465. trying something new with your family. in your business, in

  466. your church, you know, wherever. You know, we would've never

  467. gotten anything done at Saddleback if we worried what other

  468. people think. What other people think of you is none

  469. of your business. You just live for an audience of one, okay? Now,

  470. if there happens to be any of you who are

  471. church leaders right now, in our church or other churches,

  472. let me just say this. Three things. Number one, people

  473. are gonna dismiss you when you're small. Number two, people

  474. are gonna criticize you when you grow. And number three,

  475. people are gonna resent you when you succeed. In every situation,

  476. you have to live for an audience of one. Don't

  477. worry about what other people think. As I said, what

  478. other people think of you is none of your business.

  479. Those are distractions. Hebrews 12, one says this. Look up

  480. there on your outline. We should remove from our lives anything,

  481. circle that, anything that would get in the way, that's

  482. a distraction, and the sin that so easily holds us back.

  483. There are sins and there are distractions. So let me

  484. ask you this very pointed question. What's keeping you from

  485. God's agenda? What is keeping you right now from God's

  486. agenda of caring about the whole world and taking the

  487. good news to the whole world? What's keeping you from

  488. God's agenda? Have you ever thought about why God keeps

  489. you alive after you're saved? Why didn't God just kill

  490. you and take you on to heaven? the moment you're saved.

  491. If ultimately we're made for eternity, why does he let

  492. us stay around here in all the sadness, sorrow, suffering, sickness,

  493. and shootings? Why does God keep you here on earth? Well,

  494. you know, God has five purposes for your life. To

  495. know him, to love him, to love his family, to

  496. grow in him, to serve him, and to share him.

  497. Of the five purposes God has for your life, four

  498. of them you're gonna do in heaven. You can worship

  499. in heaven. You can worship in heaven. You can fellowship

  500. in heaven. You can fellowship in heaven. You can grow

  501. in heaven. You can grow in heaven. You can serve

  502. in heaven. There's only one thing you can't do in heaven.

  503. Tell non-believers about the gospel. Tell non-believers about the gospel. Witness, share,

  504. share your testimony, evangelize. Now, of those things, which of those,

  505. since four of them you're gonna do in heaven, the

  506. only reason you're left here on earth is to tell others.

  507. There are only two things you can't do in heaven.

  508. Did you know that? Only two, you can pray in heaven,

  509. you can sing in heaven, you can relax in heaven,

  510. you can eat in heaven, you can have fun in heaven.

  511. The two things you can't do. You can't sin and

  512. you can't witness. So which of those two do you

  513. think God leaves you here on earth to do? Not sin.

  514. So what's keeping you from God's agenda? What is it

  515. that's keeping you from God's agenda? Whatever it is, let

  516. it go. I've had people say over the years, Rick,

  517. don't you have enough people? Why do you keep growing?

  518. We don't grow for our benefit. The bigger the church gets,

  519. the more problems there are. We grow because people need

  520. the Lord. We grow because as long as there's one

  521. person lost within driving distance of any of our campuses,

  522. we are commanded to reach out. The truth is, friends,

  523. the church that doesn't want to grow is saying to

  524. the world, you can go to hell. We're all saved.

  525. We're happy. We don't care about you. We've got our

  526. own little problems, our own little politics, our own little controversies.

  527. The rest of you, you can just go to hell. Now,

  528. let me just repeat what I've said now twice. If

  529. you want God's anointing on your life, you must care

  530. about what God cares about most, his agenda. He wants

  531. his lost children found. Many of you remember the story

  532. of my dad's dying words. My dad was a man

  533. with a mission. He was a pastor for 50 years

  534. who died of cancer, never pastored a church more than

  535. about 120 people, but he was a builder, he's a carpenter.

  536. And in his lifetime, he built over 150 church buildings

  537. all around the world. Take volunteers all around the world,

  538. building churches where there'd been disasters like floods and fires

  539. and all kinds of things. When Saddam kicked the Kurds

  540. into Northern Iraq, my dad took 19 guys, went to

  541. Northern Iraq and built a dozen wells to give water

  542. to the Kurdish people. Right before he died, he was

  543. dying of cancer. He said, son, I think I got

  544. one more church in me. They said, dad, you've always

  545. been a worker for the Lord. You've never been somebody

  546. to sit around laying in a lazy boy chair watching TV.

  547. I said, if you want to die with your boots on,

  548. it's okay with me. Where do you want to build

  549. your last church building? He said, in Siberia. I said, okay.

  550. One of the last pictures of I have of my dad,

  551. late in life, He's on the top of a small

  552. church building he had built in Siberia, in the middle

  553. of a snowstorm, snow all over the roof, nailing down

  554. the roof. And that's my memory of my dad. Last

  555. week of his life, we brought him home to Shondell's house,

  556. my sister's house. And he was there. And the last

  557. week of his life, he... He went into kind of

  558. a dreamlike state. The cancer was eating away at him.

  559. And for the last week, he dreamed aloud. And I

  560. sat by his bed for several days, listening to my

  561. dad dream. And in those dreams, it's interesting, he talked

  562. about his life. But he didn't review what I thought

  563. he might review. He never talked about being a hero

  564. in World War II, which he was in South Pacific.

  565. He never talked about fishing, which he loved. A day

  566. without fishing was a day wasted. He never talked about

  567. the books you read or the movies you saw. He

  568. talked about what was most important to him, building churches

  569. for God's kingdom. And he would replay. You guys take

  570. these videos, I mean, team, go over there, take that

  571. lumber over there and Make sure that Joyce is correct.

  572. And when you get the beams together, do that and

  573. make sure the wiring here and make sure everybody's back

  574. for lunch. And he just replayed building one church after

  575. another in his mind. And I sat there listening to him.

  576. I learned a lot about my dad listening to his dreams.

  577. A night before he died, I remember I was sitting

  578. there in that room at home with my wife, Kay,

  579. and my niece, Alyssa. The three of us were in

  580. the room And all of a sudden, my dad got

  581. very agitated. He was in this dreamlike state and he

  582. started trying to get out of bed. And this time

  583. he'd lost a lot of weight. He was very thin.

  584. And Kay said, Jimmy, whatever you need, just tell us,

  585. we'll get it for you. But he kept trying to

  586. get out of bed, kept trying to get out of bed,

  587. kept trying to get out of bed. And my wife

  588. Kay said, Jimmy, you're sick. And whatever you need, you

  589. don't need to get out. We'll get it for you.

  590. Just tell us whatever you need. But my dad kept

  591. trying to get out of bed. And finally, Kay got

  592. pretty stern with him, loving, but stern, said, Jimmy, you're dying.

  593. You can't get out of bed. Whatever you need, tell

  594. us and we'll get it for you. And my dad said,

  595. gotta save one more for Jesus. Gotta save one more

  596. for Jesus. Gotta save one more for Jesus. He began

  597. to repeat this over and over. One more for Jesus.

  598. One more for Jesus. Save one more for Jesus. One more.

  599. Reach one more for Jesus. I'm not exaggerating. There were

  600. two other people in the room that my dad said

  601. that maybe 100, I don't know, maybe 150 times in

  602. the next hour. Gotta save one more for Jesus. One

  603. more for Jesus. One more for Jesus. And as I'm

  604. sitting next to my dad, I bowed my head and

  605. tears are flowing down my face as I was thanking

  606. God for a dad who in his final moments was

  607. thinking about the kingdom of God, was not thinking about himself,

  608. was not thinking about fun, was not thinking about politics,

  609. was not thinking about money, was not thinking about what

  610. everybody else thinks about. He wasn't even thinking about his pain.

  611. He's thinking about the kingdom of God. And I bowed

  612. my head with tears coming down and I was praying,

  613. thanking God for the legacy of a dad like that.

  614. And my dad reached up his very frail hand and

  615. it was shaking kind of like this. And he put

  616. it over on my head. like a blessing. And he said,

  617. reach one more for Jesus. One more for Jesus. Save

  618. one more for Jesus. One more for Jesus. Bring one

  619. more to Jesus. I intend for that theme to be

  620. the theme for the rest of my life. I'm stepping

  621. down after 43 years at Saddleback. But I don't believe

  622. in retirement from the kingdom of God. And for the

  623. rest of my life, as God gives me breath, I

  624. will bring one more to Jesus. And I invite you

  625. to make it the theme of your life because nothing

  626. matters more. Nothing will leave a greater legacy. If you

  627. know something more important than to bring people to Christ

  628. that he shed his blood for, bring them to Christ,

  629. build them up to maturity, train them for their ministry

  630. and send them out on their mission. I invite you

  631. to stand up right now and tell us what it

  632. is because I decided a long time ago, I'm not

  633. gonna waste my life. And I haven't. I have not

  634. wasted my life. I've lived it with purpose and with priority.

  635. In the next 365 days, 231,000 Californians, that's my state,

  636. will die. And most of them will go into a

  637. Christless eternity without hope and without Christ. In the next

  638. 365 days, 2.3 million Americans will die. Doesn't matter if

  639. they're Democrat or Republican, red, yellow, black, or white, 2.3

  640. million Americans will die. And most of them will go

  641. into eternity without Christ. In the next 365 days, 54

  642. million people in the world will die. And most of

  643. them will go into eternity without Christ, without hope. Those

  644. statistics are almost unbearable to me. We have to adopt

  645. God's agenda. The kingdom of God matters more than anything else.

  646. We must abandon all distractions because the kingdom of God

  647. matters more than anything else. And number three, and this

  648. is from God's word too, we must appropriate God's power

  649. because we can't do this on our own. We can't

  650. finish the task on our own. the great commission that

  651. was given almost 2,000 years ago. In that verse, Matthew 6, 33,

  652. Jesus attaches a great promise. I love it in the

  653. New Living Translation. It says this, God will give you

  654. all you need. Listen, God will give you all you

  655. need from day to day if you live for him

  656. and make the kingdom of God your primary concern. That

  657. is the greatest priority. You know, for 20 years here

  658. at Saddleback Church, I personally taught every new membership class

  659. every month for almost 20 years. And one of the

  660. things I would say in every membership class is this,

  661. I make no apology in saying to you that the

  662. greatest thing you may do with your life is join

  663. this church, grow to maturity, Get involved in a ministry

  664. and go out on mission because that is going to

  665. outlast everything else you do. It's going to outlast your career.

  666. It's going to outlast your hobbies. Building the kingdom of God,

  667. growing a church, it's going to outlast us. And I

  668. say this, imagine 100 years from today, you're in heaven.

  669. And imagine 100 years from today, somebody comes up to

  670. you and says, I just want to thank you. When

  671. you say, thank me, I don't even know you. I said, no,

  672. you don't know me. But you were the pioneers of

  673. Saddleback Church. You were one of those people who back

  674. in the 2020s, the 2020s, you joined that church. and

  675. you got involved, and you grew to maturity, and you

  676. discovered your shape for ministry, and you took all those classes,

  677. and you got involved in serving, and you went on mission,

  678. and you took the gospel around the world. And 50

  679. years after you died, that church reached me for Jesus Christ.

  680. I'm in heaven because of you. Thank you. You think

  681. that'll be worth it? as I said just a second ago,

  682. if you know a greater task, a greater priority, a

  683. greater purpose than to do what we've just been talking about,

  684. I invite you to stand up and tell us. I'd

  685. like to know because I am not gonna waste my life.

  686. In fact, just friends, God is looking for people to

  687. use And in 2 Chronicles 16, verse nine, a verse

  688. that God gave me when I was 16 years old

  689. and called me to serve him full time the rest

  690. of my life, I started preaching on a 16, licensed

  691. to preach by my church while I was still in

  692. high school. 2 Chronicles 16, nine says this, the eyes

  693. of the Lord searched back and forth across the whole

  694. earth looking for people whose hearts are perfect toward him

  695. so that he can show his great power in helping them.

  696. Will you be that person? Will you commit to God's priorities,

  697. God's agenda, and finishing the task so that God can

  698. show his power in you? Let me just close with

  699. the pretty personal question. How badly do you want to

  700. be a part of God's agenda? Just something you'd like

  701. to do maybe in your spare time? You think God

  702. put you on earth to do something different? Are you

  703. willing to be criticized? Are you willing to be misunderstood

  704. because you don't adopt other people's agendas and you don't

  705. get involved in the spats and the controversies out there?

  706. Are you willing to go against the flow? Are you

  707. willing to serve in obscurity? And nobody knows what you're doing,

  708. but God does? You say, well, nobody knows what I'm

  709. doing for the kingdom. God does, he has every hair

  710. on your head numbered. And when he puts you in ministry,

  711. you stay put until he calls you to do something different. Now,

  712. what we've talked about is God's agenda. and God's priorities

  713. and God's purposes. And there are four possible responses that

  714. you can make to this greatest task of taking the

  715. good news across the street, across the nation, across the ocean,

  716. around the world. Four possible responses to what I've just

  717. talked to you about, what God's word has said. You

  718. can be like Moses, who when God called him, he said, who, me?

  719. Or you can be like Jonah who said, not me,

  720. not me. Or you can be like Habakkuk who said,

  721. why me? Why me? Or you can be like Isaiah

  722. who said, send me, send me. God is looking for

  723. a band of people who will disregard all the cultural

  724. distractions and and all of the divisions, and all of

  725. the criticisms in our culture, and we'll focus on the

  726. one thing that has always mattered most, the salvation of

  727. the people Christ died for. I invite you to make

  728. the rest of your life the best of your life

  729. by adopting God's agenda, abandoning all distractions, and appropriating God's power.

  730. It's the most important thing. Let's pray. Would you bow

  731. your heads with me? Father, I wanna thank you. Thank

  732. you for the privilege of being a part of the

  733. only thing that matters. The only thing that's gonna last

  734. for eternity. It's not gonna last five years or 100 years.

  735. It's gonna last for eternity. Thank you for the privilege

  736. of being a part of your kingdom and building your church.

  737. Would you pray this in your heart? Say, Lord, I

  738. realize that nothing is more important than what we've just

  739. talked about. I realize that. And I realize that nothing

  740. else is gonna last for eternity. Tell the Lord, forgive

  741. me for allowing other things to distract me me from

  742. what's most important in life. Why I'm still alive here

  743. on earth. I recommit my life to your agenda today.

  744. I want to be a kingdom builder. I want to

  745. help finish the task. that you gave AD 33 in

  746. the Great Commission. Expand my heart, Lord. Just say, expand

  747. my heart, Lord, and give me a world vision. Bring

  748. revival in my life, in my family, in my body,

  749. in our church, in our world. Start it in me.

  750. Like Isaiah, Lord, I'm saying, here am I, Lord, send me.

  751. Use me to make a difference and help me to

  752. reach one more for Jesus. If you've never opened your

  753. life to Jesus Christ, this is a great time to

  754. do that. Say, Jesus Christ, come into my life right now.

  755. And make yourself real to me. Just say, I don't

  756. understand it all, but as much as I know how,

  757. Jesus Christ, I open my life. Replace the emptiness in

  758. my heart with your love. Replace my pressure with your peace.

  759. Replace my regrets with your forgiveness. Replace my pressure with

  760. your purpose. I open my life to you. And I

  761. humbly ask you to accept me into your family. I'm

  762. putting my trust in you. I know I can't save myself.

  763. And I ask this in your name. Amen. Amen.
