-
When worry takes over, it can affect both your mind and your body.
-
Your thoughts may race through everything that could go wrong.
-
You may have difficulty breathing through the weight you feel in your chest.
-
You may even feel guilty for being anxious, which only adds another burden to what you are already carrying.
-
Sometimes the harder we try to force ourselves to stop worrying, the more frustrated and overwhelmed we become.
-
Philippians 4, 6 through 7 gives us an invitation for moments like these.
-
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
-
These verses are familiar to many Christians, but familiarity can sometimes cause us to overlook their depth.
-
Paul does not simply tell us to stop worrying, he gives us somewhere to take our worries.
-
Instead of carrying every fear by ourselves, we are invited to bring each concern honestly before God.
-
And notice what God promises in return.
-
He does not promise that every problem will immediately disappear.
-
He promises his peace, a peace greater than what our circumstances can explain, to guard our hearts and minds in Christ.
-
Today we do not have to solve every problem before we can experience his peace.
-
We can bring our concerns to the God who cares for us and trust him with what we cannot control.
-
Let's begin by praising Jesus that he understands at the deepest level what it means to feel anxious.
-
Praise him for his sacrifice on the cross, which came with a price.
-
Praise him that he truly understands.
-
Thank Him that you can come to Him honestly without pretending that everything is fine.
-
Ask God to help you understand what is beneath those worries.
-
What fear, uncertainty, or situation has been occupying your thoughts?
-
Be honest with God about how you feel.
-
Bring your concerns to Him one by one, trusting that nothing is too large or too small for His attention.
-
Ask God to fulfill His promise by guarding your heart and mind with His peace.
-
Pray for the strength to trust Him with what you cannot control and the wisdom to handle what is within your responsibility.
-
What name comes to mind that you can pray for today?
-
Ask God to meet that person in whatever uncertainty or anxiety they may be facing.
-
Pray that his peace would steady their heart and quiet their thoughts.
-
Ask God to give them strength to keep moving forward and remind them that they do not face their struggles alone.
-
Lord, thank you for meeting us with compassion in our weakness.
-
Thank you that you are present in every concern, whether large or small.
-
We bring our worries to you today, guard our hearts and minds, strengthen our trust in you, and lead us in the way of your peace.
-
Amen.
