  1. Now you've probably noticed that you often get tired. In fact,

  2. you're tired a lot.

  3. And at the end of the day, you're kind.

  4. Of worn out and you run out of energy. And

  5. the reason why is real simple. You're a human being.

  6. Your strength is finite. God's strength is infinite. You know,

  7. probably the most common greeting that you hear, particularly among believers,

  8. is God bless you. And we say it not just

  9. when people sneeze, We say, God bless you. Have you

  10. ever thought, what in the world does that mean?

  11. What's a blessing?

  12. How do you define a blessing? Would you know a

  13. blessing if it slapped you in the face? I mean,

  14. the Bible says that sometimes a problem is a blessing.

  15. So when you say, God bless them really great, you say,

  16. given a bunch of problems? Really, what in the world

  17. is a blessing? And if you pray for God to

  18. bless somebody, how do you even know if it's happened

  19. or not if you don't know what a blessing is?

  20. The word blessed in the Bible is the Greek word.

  21. Makarios, makarios.

  22. And makarios is the word for happy, happy. It is

  23. the word for happiness. To be blessed is to be happy.

  24. To have a blessing is to have happiness in your life.

  25. And when Jesus talks about you're blessed if you do this,

  26. he's saying you're going to be happy if you do this.

  27. It's the exact same word. Now today we're going to

  28. begin quite a long series through Jesus' most famous sermon.

  29. It's called the Sermon on the Mount.

  30. And Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount by talking

  31. about eight ways to be blessed by God. Eight ways

  32. to receive God's blessing on your life. You could call

  33. it eight ways to be happy. The truth is, I

  34. want you, as your pastor, I love you, I love you.

  35. And I want God to bless your life. I want

  36. him to bless your relationships. If you're in school, I

  37. want him to bless your studies. If you're married, I

  38. want you to bless your marriage. I want him to

  39. bless your finances. I want God to bless your health.

  40. I want God to bless your talent. I want God

  41. to bless your future. So I'm extremely interested in how

  42. to receive the blessings of God. Now, as we study scripture,

  43. we find that the problem isn't with God, the problem

  44. is with us. God wants to bless your life, you

  45. just have to get blessable. And a lot of us

  46. don't live lives in ways that God can bless. God

  47. isn't gonna bless sin. God isn't gonna bless arrogance. God

  48. isn't gonna bless indifference. There are a lot of things

  49. God will not bless. And so when Jesus starts his

  50. most famous sermon, the first thing he begins with, I'm

  51. gonna teach you the eight conditions for receiving God's blessing

  52. in your life. And for the next eight weeks, we're

  53. gonna look at each of those eight conditions in detail.

  54. We're calling it the P's to a blessed life. Now

  55. let me read the first verses. In Matthew chapter five,

  56. this isn't on your outline, but the Sermon on the

  57. Mount is in Matthew chapter five, chapter six, and chapter seven.

  58. We're gonna go through all three of those chapters verse

  59. by verse in the days ahead. And chapter five starts

  60. like this. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up

  61. on the mountain, and after he sat down, His disciples

  62. came to him and he began to teach them. Now notice,

  63. in Bible times, the teacher always sat and the people,

  64. the audience, always stood.

  65. I think that's a good idea. I want to be

  66. like Jesus.

  67. So maybe I'll just sit down right now and I'm

  68. going to ask all of you to stand up for

  69. the next 45 minutes, all right?

  70. No, no, we won't do that.

  71. But you know, I want to be like Jesus. Jesus

  72. doesn't wear socks, so I don't wear socks. But Jesus,

  73. it says, sat down. That was the way they taught

  74. in those days. The teacher sat and everybody else stood.

  75. And then he gives the first of these eight conditions

  76. for being blessed by God. And he says this, blessed

  77. are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom

  78. of heaven. Now that doesn't tell me a whole lot

  79. because I don't understand most of the words in that verse. First,

  80. I don't know what poor in spirit means, and I

  81. don't know what the kingdom of heaven is. So we've

  82. gotta unpack this for you to understand the benefit to

  83. your life. First, what is the kingdom of heaven? Is

  84. that different from the kingdom of God? Well, I'm gonna

  85. ask you to hold your questions on this, because I

  86. promise you, in this series, we're gonna deal in depth

  87. with this issue. We're going to look at what is

  88. the kingdom of God and why it is so incredibly

  89. important to your life and why you definitely want to

  90. be a part of it. And we're going to go

  91. into that in detail, explaining what is the kingdom of God.

  92. But this week as we start the series, I want

  93. us to look at just the first six words of

  94. Jesus' most famous sermon. And the first six words he

  95. starts with, the first word he starts with, blessed. Now

  96. I like that. God starts teaching with a blessing. He

  97. doesn't start with let me give you eight curses. He

  98. gives you eight blessings. That's my kind of preacher. And

  99. he says let me tell you eight ways to be happy.

  100. That's the first thing Jesus talks about in the Sermon

  101. on the Mount.

  102. Here's what he says.

  103. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the

  104. kingdom of heaven. So the first word out of his

  105. mouth to you is a blessing. Now what does it

  106. mean to be poor in spirit? Well, he's not talking

  107. about physical poverty. He didn't say blessed are the poor.

  108. He says blessed are the poor in spirit. He's not

  109. talking about economic poverty. He's not talking about material poverty.

  110. He's not talking about physical poverty. He's talking about spiritual poverty.

  111. He's talking about maintaining a certain kind of attitude. For

  112. you to understand this, I put there on your outline

  113. several other translations of this verse so you could actually

  114. see a fuller understanding of what it means to be

  115. poor in spirit. For instance, the New Living Translation says,

  116. God blesses those who realize their need for him. The

  117. God's Word Translation says, God blesses those who recognize they're

  118. spiritually helpless. The Common English Version says, God blesses those

  119. who depend only on him. And New Century Version says,

  120. God blesses those who know they have a great spiritual,

  121. have great spiritual needs.

  122. You can see a pattern developing here.

  123. He's saying, I recognize that I am inadequate to live

  124. my life without God. Without God in my life, I

  125. am spiritually poor. Without God's help in my life, I

  126. am spiritually poor.

  127. I am inadequate.

  128. A good verse that... Helps clarify, this is Psalm 146.

  129. There in your outline, verse five. The Lord blesses everyone

  130. who trusts him and depends on him. Circle the word

  131. trust and the word depend. This is the first condition

  132. for God's blessing on your life. You gotta trust him.

  133. You've gotta depend on him. And that's what it means

  134. to be poor in spirit. In fact, let me give

  135. you a definition. Why don't you write this down? To

  136. be poor in spirit, which is the first condition for

  137. God's blessing on your life, means I humbly depend on

  138. God instead of myself.

  139. That's what it means.

  140. To be poor in spirit means I humbly depend on

  141. God instead of myself, because I know I'm inadequate to

  142. handle all the problems that face me in life. So

  143. if I want God's blessing on my relationship to my girlfriend,

  144. my boyfriend, my husband, my wife, or anybody else, then

  145. I've got to be dependent upon God. If I want

  146. God's blessing in my work, in my career, in my studies,

  147. if I want God's blessing in my finances, in my health,

  148. I have to humbly depend on God instead of myself.

  149. So then the question becomes, how do you do that?

  150. How do I actually depend on God on a daily

  151. basis and on a moment by moment basis? Well, this weekend,

  152. I wanna give you five practical ways to do this

  153. from the word of God. And these are five practical ways.

  154. You can practice every one of them this week. And

  155. if you practice these, you will become a woman or

  156. a man who is poor in spirit, which means you

  157. depend on God rather than yourself. You understand your need

  158. for God in your life. And then that's the kind

  159. of woman, that's the kind of man that God says

  160. I like to bless. So let me just get right

  161. into it. You might write this first one down. Five

  162. ways to express my dependence on God. Number one, to

  163. be blessed by God, first, I depend on God's wisdom,

  164. not mine. I depend on God's wisdom, not my wisdom,

  165. not my own. In other words, I listen to what

  166. God says, I follow what God says to do, and

  167. I do what he says to do. Now let's look

  168. at some verses together from the Bible. Proverbs chapter 14

    Proverbs 14:12

  169. verse 12 says this. There is a way, there is

  170. a way that seems right to a man, but in

  171. the end it leads to death. Now circle the word seems.

  172. There's a way that seems right to us, to human beings,

  173. but in the end, it's a dead end. He said

  174. our ideas often lead to dead ends. It leads to death.

  175. Have you ever in your life had this feeling that

  176. something was so very, very, very right and you just

  177. knew it was the right thing to do? and you

  178. felt it with all your heart, and then you did it,

  179. and it ended up being so very, very dumb, or very,

  180. very wrong, or it became a total fiasco and a failure.

  181. That's what this verse is all about.

  182. There's a way that seems right to us, but it

  183. often ends, he says, in a dead end, and every

  184. one of us could give a testimony on this, where

  185. you've had this feeling, this hunch that, This is the

  186. perfect job, and it ends up being a dead end.

  187. This is the perfect relationship, the one I've always needed,

  188. the one I've always wanted, and that relationship ends up

  189. a dead end. This is the perfect person that I

  190. should marry, and I know this is the person, and

  191. we all know people who've made that decision.

  192. And it flopped miserably.

  193. Parents will often think, I know this is the right

  194. thing to say to my kids. And then it has

  195. the exact opposite effect on the kids and actually harms

  196. them rather than hurting them. It happens in friendships. It

  197. can happen in investments. I know this is where I

  198. should put my money. This is a sure winner. This

  199. is a big deal. I know if I invest in this, man,

  200. I'm gonna clean house. It's gonna be great. And then

  201. it just totally flops. You could probably, and we could

  202. probably spend the rest of the night doing this, Think

  203. of painful examples where you wish that you would listen

  204. to God instead of your gut. Because God is filled

  205. with truth and your gut is filled with pizza. So

  206. your gut's often wrong. Just because you think it doesn't

  207. make it right. And just because you feel it certainly

  208. doesn't make it right.

  209. Feelings lie. They lie to you all the time.

  210. I mean, there's an old country western song that says,

  211. how could it be wrong when it feels so right?

  212. Are you kidding me?

  213. There are a lot of things that are wrong that

  214. feel so right at the moment.

  215. Are you kidding me?

  216. That's about the most immature, stupid thing you could say.

  217. Because a lot of stuff feels so right and it

  218. ends up being so bad. And six months later you're

  219. saying about that relationship, what was I thinking? How in

  220. the world did I get messed up in that one?

  221. How did I get my life so tangled in something

  222. so stupid and so dumb and now I'm scarred and

  223. I'm hurt and I'm burdened and I'm going, am I gonna.

  224. Recover from this?

  225. The Bible says there's a way that seems right but

  226. it ends in a dead end.

  227. So the first way to.

  228. Get God's blessing in your life is I depend on

  229. God's wisdom Not my feelings, not my thoughts, not what

  230. everybody else is telling me. I depend on God's wisdom,

  231. not mine. Now, if you want to have fewer dead

  232. ends in your life, if you want to have fewer defeats,

  233. fewer failures in your life, this next verse is for you.

  234. Proverbs 3, five to seven. Trust the Lord with all

  235. your heart. Do not depend on God. on your own understanding.

  236. In other words, don't depend on your wisdom. Don't depend

  237. on what you think is the right thing to do.

  238. Don't depend on your hunches and your feelings. Those are often,

  239. lead you astray. Do not depend on your own understanding.

  240. Seek his will, God's will, in all you do, in

  241. everything you do, how you spend your time, your money,

  242. your relationships, everything. And he, God promises, he will direct

  243. your paths. Don't be impressed with your own wisdom. What

  244. he's saying there, Don't go around saying, I got this

  245. all figured out. I can handle this. I'm a big girl.

  246. I'm a big guy. I know what I'm doing. I've

  247. got it all figured out. I got a plan. He's saying,

  248. don't be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, respect the

  249. Lord and turn your back on evil. So if I

  250. really want God's blessing, the first thing is I depend

  251. on God's wisdom, not what my feelings say, not what

  252. my gut says, not what my friends say, not what

  253. I think. but I trust in the Lord with all

  254. my heart and lean not on my own understanding. Now,

  255. how do I get God's wisdom?

  256. Two ways. You pray and you read.

  257. You pray, you talk to God, and you read the Bible,

  258. you let him talk to you. And that's how you

  259. get God's wisdom. Look at this next verse. The Bible

  260. says in James 1, verse five, if any of you,

  261. if any of you lacks wisdom, You should pray and

  262. ask God who gives it grudgingly and sparingly to all.

  263. That's not what it says.

  264. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should pray and

  265. ask God who gives it, read it with me, generously

  266. and graciously to all. Now notice he gives it to everybody.

  267. All you gotta do is.

  268. Ask for it.

  269. You don't have to be qualified for it. All you

  270. have to do is ask for it. You see, God

  271. doesn't want you to be stupid. God doesn't want you

  272. to make dumb mistakes. God doesn't want you to hit

  273. dead ends. God doesn't want you to go through failure

  274. after failure after failure after failure.

  275. In your life.

  276. God wants you to succeed in your life. He wants

  277. you to be wise. He wants you to make smart

  278. decisions with your time, your money, your relationships, and everything else.

  279. And it's not like you're waiting on him, he's waiting

  280. on you. God's saying, hey, I'm here, and I'll give

  281. you wisdom, and I'll give it generously. and I'll give

  282. it graciously, I'm not grudging about it, I love to

  283. give you, I wanna make you wise, but you just

  284. gotta ask. Now, how do you know when you are

  285. living on God's wisdom rather than on your wisdom? How

  286. do you know if you're really depending on God's wisdom?

  287. You're talking to God throughout your entire day, and you're

  288. reading his word on a daily basis. If you're not

  289. talking to God throughout your whole day, God, I'm getting

  290. ready to go into this meeting. I'm getting ready to

  291. go into this class. I'm getting ready to go meet

  292. with some friends. What do I do?

  293. What do I say?

  294. And you're not talking to God like that all day.

  295. And if you're not reading God's word on a daily basis,

  296. you are depending on your own wisdom. You're just fooling yourself.

  297. You're not depending on God's wisdom. You're depending on your own.

  298. And it's why you have so many problems and why

  299. so many things fall through and why you end up

  300. with so much pain in your life. Because you're not

  301. depending on God's wisdom by reading the book and talking

  302. to the author.

  303. Would you write this down?

  304. God's wisdom and God's will are in God's word. God's

  305. wisdom and will is in God's word. They're in God's word.

  306. God's wisdom and will are in God's word. And if

  307. you're not in the word, you don't know God's will.

  308. And if you're not in the word, you don't have

  309. God's wisdom. And if you don't have God's wisdom, you

  310. can't be blessed. So that's the starting point. I gotta pray,

  311. talk to the Lord, and I gotta let him talk

  312. to me.

  313. Let me give you another one, number two.

  314. If I really want God's blessing on my life, and

  315. not only depend on God's wisdom, I depend on God's strength,

  316. not mine. I depend on God's strength, God's power, God's energy,

  317. not mine. Now, you've probably noticed that you often get tired.

  318. In fact, you're tired a lot. And at the end

  319. of the day, you're kinda worn out, and you run

  320. out of energy, and the reason why is real simple.

  321. You're a human being. Your strength is limited. God's strength

  322. is unlimited. Your strength is finite. God's strength is infinite.

  323. Your strength is exhaustible. That's why you get exhausted. God's

  324. strength is inexhaustible. God never runs out of energy. God

  325. never gets tired. And so I need to depend on

  326. God's strength, not my own. Let me show you some verses.

  327. Psalm 84 verse five. God says, you bless all who

  328. depend on you for their strength. You want God's blessing

  329. in your life? You need to depend on God for

  330. your strength. Now what do you do when your strength evaporates?

  331. You're at the end of the day and you go,

  332. I'm just out of steam, I'm out of energy. I

  333. don't have the energy to go into this next week.

  334. I got too many things to do and not enough

  335. energy to do it. Here's a good promise, Isaiah 40, 31.

  336. Those who trust in the Lord for help will find

  337. their strength renewed. They will rise on wings like eagles.

  338. They will run and not get weary. They will walk

  339. and not grow weak. And I'll give you a personal

  340. testimony on this one. I have been living this verse,

  341. this one, Isaiah 40, 31, for the last year. Because

  342. there's no way I could face the loss of my

  343. son on my own energy, on my own strength. I

  344. needed God to pull me through many, many dark times.

  345. Now let me just say this, in the darkest moments

  346. of your life, when you cannot see your way forward,

  347. and doesn't matter what they are or where they came from,

  348. in the darkest moments of your life, you need God's

  349. strength to get you through. And the reason why most

  350. people never get through it is they don't have God's strength.

  351. I've seen people go through a divorce and they never recover.

  352. I've seen people go through a breakup and they never recover.

  353. I've seen people go through a major illness. I've seen

  354. them go through a bankruptcy or getting fired or getting

  355. laid off or getting arrested. I've seen people go through

  356. all kinds of different things. Abuse and they never recover, why?

  357. Because they're depending on their own strength. You're not gonna

  358. get through it on your own strength. You're gonna get

  359. stuck at that stage and you get miserable the rest

  360. of your life. The only way you get through the

  361. darkest days of your life is on God's strength. You

  362. gotta depend on him. Now I've put down here a

  363. couple verses that I would encourage you to memorize. One

  364. of them is for when you're young and another one

  365. is for when you're old. But the first one, everybody

  366. can memorize this, it's only one sentence, Psalm 71 16,

  367. look at this verse.

  368. I walk in the strength of the Lord.

  369. I walk in the strength of the Lord. That's an affirmation.

  370. Psalm 71 16. In fact, let's memorize it right now.

  371. Let's say it together. Psalm 71 16, I walk in

  372. the strength of the Lord.

  373. And where is that verse?

  374. Psalm 71 16. And what does Psalm 71 16 say?

  375. I walk in the strength of the Lord. Now here's

  376. what I encourage you to do. Write that verse on

  377. a card. and read it over and over and over

  378. until you got it memorized so you can say it

  379. 10 times a day. And here's what you do. You

  380. make it the most important affirmation in your life. And

  381. when you get up in the morning and you wanna

  382. go right back to bed, and you're worn out and

  383. you go, I don't even have enough energy to get

  384. started today, you sit on the side of your bed

  385. and you say, I.

  386. Walk in the strength of the Lord.

  387. And then when you get up and you go to

  388. school or you go to work or whatever you're doing

  389. and you have that first conflict with somebody, you say,

  390. I walk in the strength of the Lord. And later

  391. in the afternoon when you get a phone call and

  392. it's bad news and it's terrible and you're frustrated and

  393. you're scared and it creates anxiety and stress, you say,

  394. I walk.

  395. In the strength of the Lord.

  396. When late in the day you're just running out of

  397. energy and there's still a whole lot more to do,

  398. you say to yourself.

  399. I walk in the strength of the Lord.

  400. And when you go to bed at night, as you

  401. put your head down on the pillow and all of

  402. the things that you didn't get done and all of

  403. the worries and the fears and loneliness and any other

  404. thing that tends to pile in, you say, I walk

  405. in the strength of the Lord. That is the kind

  406. of woman God blesses. That is the kind of man

  407. God blesses. I walk in the strength of the Lord.

  408. I don't just depend on God's wisdom and.

  409. Do the right thing.

  410. I do the right thing with the right power. I'm

  411. not doing the right thing under my power, I'm doing

  412. the right thing under God's power. God, I need you

  413. to give me the energy. I need to plug into

  414. the power. When you get older, you're gonna face the

  415. pains and problems of aging.

  416. And that gets pretty frightening.

  417. Just talk to somebody who's getting up in age and

  418. ask them that.

  419. And here's a good verse for then.

  420. When maybe your body isn't working like it should and

  421. your mind isn't as sharp as it used to be

  422. and maybe you're starting to get a little Alzheimer, a

  423. little dementia, Psalm 73 26 says this. My heart may fail,

  424. my health may fail, My health may fail and my

  425. spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of

  426. my heart.

  427. He is mine forever. That's a great verse to remember.

  428. Everything may else fall apart in my life, but God

  429. is the strength of my heart.

  430. He is mine forever.

  431. One of the most famous Christians of the 19th century

  432. was a guy named Hudson Taylor. He was a very

  433. famous missionary to China and he was a spiritual giant.

  434. A brilliant man.

  435. Later though in age, he lived to be an old

  436. man and in his old age he lost his health

  437. and became very, very weak. And he wrote this letter

  438. to a friend and it said this. I am so

  439. weak I can no longer work. I am so weak

  440. I can no longer study. I'm so weak I can

  441. no longer read my Bible. I cannot even pray. I

  442. can only lie still in the arms of God like

  443. a little child and trust.

  444. That's good enough.

  445. Sometimes in your life you're gonna be so weak you

  446. can't even pray. Sometimes in your life you're gonna be

  447. so weak you can't read the Bible, you can't go

  448. to a Bible study, you can't work, you can't do anything.

  449. What do you do in those moments? You're just laying

  450. there in bed so weak. I rest in the strength

  451. of the Lord. in his arms like a little child

  452. and I trust. You see, weakness can actually be a

  453. good thing in your life if it causes you to

  454. depend on God. Look at this verse up here on

  455. the screen. This is from Saint Paul. Paul says this,

  456. 2 Corinthians 12. Three times I begged God to take

  457. away my weakness. Now you got some weaknesses you'd like

  458. God to take away. You've probably asked him to. And

  459. each time God said, my grace is all you need.

  460. My power works best in your weakness. So you don't

  461. need anything else.

  462. You just need me.

  463. My power works best in your weakness. So, Paul says,

  464. I now gladly boast. I boast about how weak I am.

  465. I used to hide my weaknesses. I used to be

  466. ashamed of my weaknesses. Paul says, not anymore. I'm proud

  467. of my weaknesses. Why? Because when I'm weakness, when I'm weakest,

  468. the power of Christ works in me and shows up

  469. through me. And when I'm weak, then I am strong. See,

  470. that's the paradox of depending on God. The more you're weak,

  471. the more you depend on God. The more you depend

  472. on God, the stronger you get. You know that verse,

  473. they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength,

  474. like we just looked at earlier? I was quoting that

  475. verse all this last week. I had 12 Easter services

  476. to preach, and I'd be sitting backstage, and I'm thinking,

  477. they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.

  478. They will mount up with wings as eagles. They shall

  479. preach and not grow weary. They shall preach and not faint.

  480. And you do the right thing, but you do it

  481. in the power of God, not in your own power. Now,

  482. there's a third one, and this is a big one,

  483. where you can learn dependence, being poor in spirit this

  484. week so.

  485. God can bless you. And Tom's gonna come talk about it.

  486. To be blessed by God, I depend on God's wisdom

  487. and I depend on God's strength, but the third thing

  488. is I depend on God's timing, not mine. I depend

  489. on God's timing, not mine.

  490. The older I get, the more I understand how timing

  491. is so important in every area of life.

  492. Look at it in sports, you can see it easily.

  493. The difference between a professional pitcher and an amateur is timing.

  494. The difference between a professional golf player and an amateur

  495. is timing. You can see it in things like cooking.

  496. A professional cook knows that it takes 37 seconds in

  497. the toaster for the perfect Pop-Tart. They know that if

  498. they're a real professional. You just see it in all

  499. kinds of areas of life. You see it in your life.

  500. God's timing, the right timing, is God working in the

  501. right way in your life.

  502. The Bible's really.

  503. Clear about the fact that there are seasons to our life.

  504. And the fact, I don't like this, but the fact

  505. is one of those seasons that God talks about again

  506. and again is the season of waiting.

  507. He is working in our lives during this season of waiting.

  508. While you're waiting, God is working.

  509. Don't think that the season of waiting means that God

  510. has stopped working.

  511. He's still working.

  512. He's just taking us through a season of waiting because

  513. of timing, because of what he's doing in our lives,

  514. because of what he's doing in circumstances. So that's why

  515. the Bible says in Psalm 31, 14, and 15, I

  516. trust in you, O Lord.

  517. You are my God.

  518. My times are in your hands.

  519. You're going to spend a lot of life waiting.

  520. And if you don't figure out how to trust God

  521. while you're waiting, you're going to spend a lot of

  522. life not trusting God. Because there's a lot of life

  523. where we are in God's waiting room. You ever been

  524. in a hurry when God wasn't? That happen to anybody

  525. else I'm talking about? I mean, you want it to

  526. go along, but it's just not going along. God is

  527. never in a hurry. God is never in a hurry.

  528. Because he's eternal. And he is watching. He is working.

  529. He is seeing how and when you will trust him

  530. as you're waiting. We're saying, when, Lord? When is it

  531. going to happen?

  532. And God's saying, what am I doing in your life?

  533. You can trust me with this. Now, the problem with

  534. waiting is our human nature and the culture around us,

  535. everything about it says don't wait.

  536. Get things as quickly as you can.

  537. I mean, we have Fast Track and Fast Passes and

  538. one of the best business magazines is Fast Company.

  539. Everything is fast.

  540. When I go through the drive-through, I don't know if

  541. you guys are like this for getting food, I like

  542. to give my food at the first window and I

  543. wanna see the bag come out so I can just

  544. sort of keep driving by and grab it as I

  545. go by.

  546. I don't wanna even wait 20 seconds. That's the way

  547. we tend to.

  548. Be wired in our culture, and it goes against God's

  549. blessing in our lives.

  550. Because God's blessing comes through these times of waiting.

  551. Ecclesiastes 3.11 says, God has set the right time for everything. Now,

  552. I know some of you right now, you are in

  553. a time of waiting. Maybe it's for school to end.

  554. Maybe it's for a man or a woman to come

  555. into your life. Maybe it's for a marriage to happen

  556. or for a baby to come. You're in this time

  557. of waiting in your life. And if you were honest,

  558. you would say, I'm frustrated right now with how slow

  559. this is working. We've all been there at times. There's

  560. a promise in the Bible that tells you not only

  561. that God is working, but also how God is working.

  562. It's an important promise to understand for how God works

  563. in our lives during these times of waiting. Isaiah 60

    Isaiah 60:22

  564. verse 22 says, I am the Lord, and when it

  565. is time, I will make these things happen quickly.

  566. Quickly.

  567. Here's how God's working in how he works in our lives.

  568. And it will drive you crazy. You wait and wait

  569. and wait for something. And then all of a sudden,

  570. God just gives it to you all at once.

  571. And it's just overwhelming.

  572. And you say, I was asking for it, but could

  573. you slow it down a little bit now? This can

  574. happen with, I know a lot of people who've been

  575. through adoptions like this, where they've started the adoption process

  576. and they thought the adoption was going to go through

  577. in a few months and they waited months and months

  578. and sometimes years and years and thought it never was

  579. going to happen.

  580. And then they get the phone call and the phone call.

  581. Says, okay, we got the baby for you. Are you

  582. ready in two days? And you got to go pick

  583. them up in another country. Can you do that?

  584. That's how God works many times. That's how God works

  585. in sending Jesus into this world.

  586. The Bible tells us that the world waited thousands of

  587. years for Jesus to come the first time. But at

  588. the right time, Jesus came into the world. And we've

  589. been waiting 2,000 years now for Jesus to come again.

  590. When's he going to come again? God's right time. That's

  591. when he's going to come.

  592. You might write this down in your outline, just this sentence.

  593. A delay is not a denial. Just remember that a

  594. delay is not a denial. We think God is saying no,

  595. but really God is saying not yet.

  596. Will you keep trusting me through this?

  597. And this has to do many times with how we

  598. talk to God about it, how we pray. Sometimes when

  599. we pray about something, we say, God, it's like, I

  600. want to give you first option on this. Can you

  601. do this really fast? If you don't get it done,

  602. then I'm going to go get it done myself. I

  603. don't care what I have to do. I'm going to

  604. get it done. And God's saying, no, are you trusting me?

  605. Micah talked about that. Micah 7 says, I trust the

  606. Lord to save me.

  607. And I will wait on him.

  608. I'm not going to go out and get it myself.

  609. I'm not going to accomplish this myself. I'm going to

  610. wait on him to answer my prayer. That is the

  611. kind of faith that God blesses.

  612. You know, one of the things that Tom just said,

  613. and I didn't see anybody writing it down, and it's brilliant,

  614. so you need to write this down. While I'm waiting,

  615. God's working. You need to write that down. He said,

  616. while I'm waiting, God's working. A lot of times we think,

  617. while I'm waiting, nothing's happening. But God is often working

  618. behind the scenes in ways you can't even see to

  619. get you ready for the answer to your prayer. While

  620. you're waiting, God's working. It's not like God's waiting. While

  621. you're waiting, God's working. Good example of that is how

  622. we got this land for Saddleback Church here at Lake Forest.

  623. You know, we started many, many years ago over in

  624. Laguna Hills High School. And the church began to grow,

  625. and the more it began to grow, we had to

  626. go to other different buildings. And at one point, we

  627. were using four different high schools in the same week.

  628. We were using Laguna Hills High School on one day,

  629. Mission Viejo High School on another day, El Toro High

  630. School on another day, and Tribuco Hills High School on

  631. another day. In fact, in the first 13 years of

  632. this church, because we didn't have any land, to build on,

  633. we used 79 different buildings.

  634. Can you imagine that?

  635. We said, we're the church if you can figure out

  636. where we are this week, you get to come. Because

  637. we only want really smart people. If you can't find us,

  638. you're too dumb. And we were literally, you know there's

  639. a church up in LA called the Church on the Way.

  640. We were the church on the move. Because you never

  641. knew where we were from week to week. And the

  642. church kept growing. and we went from one service to

  643. two services, to three services, to four services, and I'm

  644. getting tired, to five services, to six services, and I'm going, anytime, Lord,

  645. we'd like to have a building now. And I'd look

  646. around at friends of mine who were pastors, they got

  647. a building, and they got a building, and they got

  648. a building, and one day God said to me, Rick,

  649. who are you doing this for?

  650. I said, well, I'm doing it for you, Lord.

  651. He said, well, Does it matter what other, what does

  652. it matter to you what I do in other people's lives?

  653. You just follow me. And he said, would.

  654. You still serve me if the church I call you

  655. to lead and pastor never has a building?

  656. And I said, of course I would. Of course I would.

  657. The fact is, while we were waiting, God was working.

  658. And God was preparing this piece of land, 120 acres.

  659. That's bigger than most college campuses. But the problem was,

  660. nobody knew where this piece was. Because while we were

  661. starting the church, there was no city of Rancho Santa Margarita.

  662. There was no city of Foothill Ranch. There wasn't even

  663. a lake forest. There was an El Toro. There were

  664. no roads around here. There was no freeway. This was

  665. a cow pasture. Nobody even knew it was here. But

  666. a thousand years ago, a million years ago, God had

  667. already planned, that's where I'm gonna put part of my church,

  668. part of my body called Saddleback, I'm gonna put him

  669. right there. And we just had to wait for everything

  670. to happen for God.

  671. To give us this piece of property.

  672. And I can't tell you how many times we were

  673. tempted in early years, to settle for something small. And

  674. people say, here's a half acre of land, here's a

  675. third acre of land. We could have bought that, but

  676. each time I'd say, no, no, it's too small, it's

  677. too small. And I just kept trusting God for this.

  678. If we had bought it, we would have built a

  679. church that seated 200, and none of you would be here.

  680. Now let me just give you a little lesson. God

  681. always gives his best to those who wait.

  682. Wait.

  683. And if you get in a hurry, you're gonna settle

  684. for second best in your life. And before God brings

  685. the best man into your life, the best woman into

  686. your life, the best job into your life, the best

  687. opportunity into your life, Satan's gonna give you all kinds

  688. of detours.

  689. And he's like, hey, see me over here, me over here.

  690. And you go, oh, you know, I'm getting tired. Why

  691. don't we just pick this one? And you settle for

  692. less than God's best in your life. Don't do it.

  693. As your pastor who loves you, I'm telling you, don't

  694. do it. If you will wait for God's best, God

  695. always gives his best to those who leave the choice

  696. to him. But if you get frantic and you get

  697. nervous and you get in a hurry and you start

  698. trying to answer your own prayer, you will have a

  699. fatal flaw and a terrible mistake in your life when

  700. you try to answer your own. That's what Abraham did.

  701. God promised Abraham, I'm gonna give you a son. And

  702. when it didn't happen and didn't happen and didn't happen

  703. and didn't happen and didn't happen, because his wife was

  704. unable to conceive at that point, he took her handmaid,

  705. got her pregnant, and had a little boy named Ishmael

  706. and said, here God, I got the miracle son. And

  707. God says, that's not the baby I'm gonna give you.

  708. That's your plan. That's not my plan, that's your plan.

  709. If you want God's blessing, you gotta learn this truth

  710. very deeply. Spiritual poverty means I don't do it myself.

  711. I depend on God's wisdom. I depend on God's strength.

  712. And I depend on God's timing. And he'll answer it

  713. when he's ready to answer it and when he knows

  714. I'm ready for the answer. I'm gonna trust him, all right?

  715. Number four, let me give you another way to practice

  716. this week. To be blessed by God, I depend on

  717. God's wisdom, God's strength, God timing, and I also depend

  718. on God's defense, not mine. I'll explain this. But I

  719. depend on God's defense, not mine. There's always gonna be

  720. people in your life who misunderstand you.

  721. Do you agree with that?

  722. There will always be people around you who misunderstand. There

  723. will always be people who don't like you. There will

  724. always be people who criticize you, judge you, attack you,

  725. gossip about you, spread rumors about you. And a lot

  726. of people are like, you know, if I could just

  727. be perfect, then everybody would like me. Wrong. Jesus was perfect,

  728. and a lot of people didn't like him. So even

  729. if you were perfect, even if you were Jesus, there

  730. would be people who are just not going to like you.

  731. And so they're going to attack and they're gonna criticize

  732. and they're going to try to get, and even in

  733. your closest relationships, those who love you most, your boyfriend,

  734. your girlfriend, your husband, your wife, those who love you most,

  735. you're still gonna be misunderstood by them because we live

  736. in a broken world. And when you are misunderstood, you're

  737. gonna have a tendency to get in there and defend yourself.

  738. And when you're attacked, your tendency is to attack back.

  739. When people criticize you, you want to criticize back. People

  740. slam you, you want to slam them back. People insult you,

  741. you want to insult them back. You're out on the freeway,

  742. somebody expresses to you the international sign of displeasure. You

  743. wanna express the international sign of displeasure back to them.

  744. Don't do it.

  745. Let God be your defender, don't defend yourself. God says

  746. every time you get under attack, get criticized, get put down,

  747. get misunderstood, now you.

  748. Got two choices.

  749. You can defend yourself or you can let me defend you.

  750. What it'll be. Who do you think can do a

  751. better job of defending you? Yeah, God can. Now, you are,

  752. listen to me very closely. You're most like Christ, you're

  753. most like Jesus when you say nothing in the face

  754. of attack, in the face of unjust, unfair criticism, in

  755. the face of lies about you. You're most like Jesus

  756. When you say nothing and you remain silent and you

  757. just say, I'm gonna put this in the hands of

  758. God and let him be my defender and I'm gonna

  759. try on myself and defend myself back. Let me show

  760. you a verse about Jesus up here on the screen.

  761. In 1 Peter 2, 23, we talked about last week

  762. Jesus' crucifixion and his resurrection. It says, when they hurled

  763. insults at him, Jesus, he did not retaliate. When he suffered,

  764. he made no threats back. Instead, he entrusted himself to

  765. God to set things right. That means I depend on

  766. God to be my defender. You know, I told you

  767. last week that they did six trials for Jesus, three Roman,

  768. three Jewish trials. All of them were sham trials. They

  769. were all fake, phony trials. And one time, the religious

  770. leaders take Jesus to Pilate, who was the Roman governor

  771. of Israel at that time, Palestine, and they bring him

  772. in and they make a false charge of Jesus and

  773. they said, this guy's trying to overthrow you. He wants

  774. to be king. He wants your job, Pilate. He wants

  775. to overthrow you. He thinks he's the king. Pilate looks

  776. at him and goes, is that true? He's asking Jesus,

  777. you want my job? You trying to overthrow me? I'm

  778. the Roman appointed governor. You claim to be the king

  779. of Israel? Not when they don't have a king? You

  780. on my job? Is that what you're saying? And the

  781. Bible says Jesus would not even dignify that false accusation

  782. with an answer. It said he remained totally silent. He

  783. spake not unto them. He said not a word unto them.

  784. You are most like Jesus when you face flack and

  785. don't defend it, and don't attack back. Now here's an

  786. interesting thing. When people don't like you, they get what's

  787. called motivated reasoning, and so often, if people don't wanna

  788. like you, they'll.

  789. Believe anything negative. Isn't that true?

  790. If people don't want to like you, they are quick

  791. to believe the negative, and they do not believe anything positive.

  792. They only wanna believe the negative. Now here's the problem.

  793. Today on the internet, Anybody can say anything about you,

  794. and it's global, it's searchable, and it's permanent. And it's

  795. never going off. So somebody can say something bad about you,

  796. and it's there, and nobody's ever taken it down. And

  797. 10 years from today, somebody can Google your name and

  798. find that, and it wasn't true today, it won't be

  799. true 10 years from today, but they'll believe it.

  800. That's the kind of world you're gonna live in.

  801. So you gotta learn how to depend on God's defense

  802. not your own, why? Because to be a leader is

  803. to be misunderstood. If you're gonna be a leader in

  804. your home, if you're gonna be a leader at your school,

  805. in your community, in your church, or anywhere else, to

  806. be a leader means somebody's gonna misunderstand you. You can

  807. spend all your time trying to correct those misunderstandings, but.

  808. Here's what happens.

  809. If they don't like you, and they have motivated reason,

  810. a lot of people are like, well, if I teach

  811. them the truth, then they'll like me. But if actually

  812. you teach them the truth, it just makes them more mad.

  813. It makes them more mad because you've disproven they were

  814. wrong and now they really don't like you.

  815. And so they go out and they find out something else.

  816. The more effective you are in life, the more you're

  817. going to be attacked. You know, I decided a long

  818. time ago that I'm not gonna spend any of my

  819. time trying to answer every lie, every criticism, every rumor,

  820. every gossip, every false misrepresentation, I'm just gonna leave it

  821. to God.

  822. Why?

  823. Because if I did spend my time trying to correct

  824. all those things, I wouldn't have any time for anything else.

  825. The more influence you have, the more you're gonna be

  826. criticized in life.

  827. Just count on it.

  828. And pioneers get the arrows in the back. If you're

  829. gonna call the shots, you're gonna take the shots. So

  830. to be a leader in a business, means you're gonna

  831. be criticized. To be a leader in a church means

  832. you're gonna be criticized.

  833. Community, anywhere else. I want you to be fearless.

  834. What God wants is a generation of fearless men and

  835. fearless women who say, I'm gonna do the right thing,

  836. doesn't really matter what anything else, because I'm living for

  837. an audience of one. Well done, now good and faithful servant.

  838. That's what I'm living for. Now, you just leave it

  839. to God. Because you can't correct it all, and even

  840. if you did, they're not gonna change your attitude. Now

  841. let me show you a couple verses. Psalm chapter two,

  842. verse 12. God blesses and God protects everyone who runs

  843. to him. Not everybody who defends himself, not everybody who

  844. fights back, not everybody who goes tit for tat and

  845. you hit me, I hit you back. No, God blesses

  846. those who run to him. So you let God be

  847. your defender against accusations and against critics. The next verse,

  848. Psalm 62, on your outline, gives us five metaphors for

  849. God's protection. I want you to underline them. He says,

  850. and by the way, David who wrote this was criticized

  851. his entire life. He was attacked his entire life. In fact,

  852. most of his life, people wanted to kill him because

  853. they were jealous. And a lot of people are gonna

  854. be jealous of your success and they're gonna wanna attack

  855. you for many different reasons. David says this, I depend

  856. on God alone. I put my hope in him. He

  857. alone protects, underlines. He alone protects. He alone saves, underline saves.

  858. He alone protects and saves me. He is my defender,

  859. underline that, my defender. I shall not be defeated, underline

  860. not be defeated. My salvation and honor depend on God.

  861. What's your honor? It's your reputation. It's your reputation. My

  862. salvation and my reputation depend on God. He is my

  863. strong protector and he is my shield. Underline my shield.

  864. Now notice the five metaphors.

  865. God says he's my protector, he's my savior, he's my defender,

  866. he's my victor, and he's my shelter.

  867. He's saying, let me handle it.

  868. When you do that, you are being poor in spirit.

  869. You're saying, God, I'm not depending on myself. I'm depending

  870. on you. I depend on your wisdom. I depend on

  871. your strength. I depend on your timing and your plan.

  872. And I depend on your defense, not mine. And when

  873. God sees a person like that, he.

  874. Goes, that's my boy. That's my girl.

  875. That's who I want to bless. You're most like Jesus

  876. when you don't defend yourself. Now, One of the greatest

  877. sources of stress you're gonna have in your life is

  878. anxiety about money. In fact, studies show it's the number

  879. one cause of divorce, financial pressure.

  880. It's the number.

  881. One anxiety-producing issue, money. Am I gonna have enough to survive?

  882. Am I gonna have enough to make it? Financial worries.

  883. It keeps people awake at night and it causes people

  884. to do all kinds of stupid things. because they start

  885. worrying about money. So let me just give you one

  886. more way to depend on God, and that is this,

  887. number five, I depend on God's wealth, not mine.

  888. For my own safety, for my own.

  889. Security, I depend on God's wealth, not my wealth, for

  890. my security. If you put your security in your bank account,

  891. you are an insecure person, because you can lose everything

  892. you got in the bank. If you put your security

  893. in your job, you are a very insecure person, because

  894. you can lose your job. If you put your security

  895. in your investments, you're a very insecure person, because you

  896. can lose your investments. You have to put your security

  897. in something that cannot be taken from you, and that

  898. is God. Here's what the Bible says about God's wealth,

  899. not yours. Philippians 4.19. And my God will supply all

  900. my needs. My God will supply all my needs from

  901. his abundant wealth.

  902. Circle that.

  903. It's God's wealth, not your wealth, that makes you secure.

  904. From his abundant wealth. Because of what Christ Jesus has.

  905. Done for me.

  906. So I depend on God's wealth, not my wealth. I

  907. depend on how much God's got, not how much I've got.

  908. to be secure and to not be anxious. Now I

  909. want you to write this down. Write it down on

  910. your outline. My job is a channel, but God is

  911. my source. Let me explain this, very important. If you

  912. understand this, you'll have so much less stress in your life.

  913. My job is a channel. but God is the source

  914. of my supply. Let me give you an example. If

  915. I were to go home from this service and I

  916. were to turn on the faucet in our kitchen and

  917. no water came out, what would I do? Would I say, oh.

  918. My, the world has run out of water.

  919. There's no more water left in the whole wide world.

  920. I turned on the faucet, there is no more water left.

  921. Of course not.

  922. I know the problem is not with the source. The

  923. problem is with the distribution point. The problem is not

  924. the source. There's plenty of water in the world. The

  925. problem is the channel. The channel has gotten blocked.

  926. One way or another.

  927. And you know what, if one channel gets blocked in

  928. your life and this faucet stops working, God can turn

  929. on another faucet just as easy. And if God closes

  930. a door in your life, he can open another door.

  931. And if another door closes, he can open a window

  932. and you can crawl through it. God is not limited

  933. to your ability and capacity. Your job is a channel,

  934. God is a, if you think that your job is

  935. what keeps you financially secure, you're gonna be insecure your

  936. entire life.

  937. Living poor in spirit means.

  938. I realize that God is the source of my supply

  939. and I depend on God's wealth. My God shall supply

  940. all your needs according to his riches and glory in

  941. Christ Jesus. And I'm gonna trust in him, that is

  942. gonna handle me. Jobs may come and go. Bank accounts

  943. may come and go. Economies can go up and down.

  944. Stock markets can go bull or bear.

  945. Doesn't matter.

  946. My source of supply is in God. And the more

  947. you do that, the more blessed you're gonna be. So

  948. here's the first key to blessing. I don't depend on

  949. my wisdom. I don't depend on my wealth. I don't

  950. depend on my strength, I don't depend on my plan

  951. and timing, and I don't depend on my defending myself. Instead,

  952. I trust God in all of those areas. So, here's

  953. what I want us to do. Let's take this, and

  954. I want you to rate yourself on each of these five.

  955. I want you to give yourself a plus or a minus.

  956. Let's go back over all five. And a plus means

  957. I'm doing pretty good in this area. I'm trusting God

  958. really well. A minus means I need to work on

  959. this one this week, okay? How about the first one?

  960. I depend on God's wisdom, not mine. Okay, here's the test.

  961. Are you talking to God constantly throughout the day and

  962. are you reading the Bible every day? If you're not,

  963. you are not depending on God's wisdom, you're depending on

  964. your wisdom. Because you're not talking to him about your decisions,

  965. You've given first choice to every decision and you're not

  966. reading his word. So you're either doing those things and

  967. depending on him or you're not.

  968. So give yourself a plus or minus.

  969. How about the second one? I depend on God's strength,

  970. not mine. Are you doing that? Are you walking in

  971. the strength of the Lord? Are those who trust in

  972. the Lord will renew their strength? Okay, give yourself a

  973. plus or minus. How about number three? I depend on

  974. God's timing, not mine. How impatient are you? Plus or minus?

  975. Am I going, God, you're too slow. I'm gonna take

  976. matters into my own hands. I'm gonna find me a man.

  977. Okay?

  978. I'm taking it in, okay? Or are you just saying, God,

  979. I'm gonna make sure, I'm gonna make this job happen

  980. or whatever. Are you depending on God's timing or are

  981. you depending on your timing? Okay, number four. I depend

  982. on God's defense, not mine. How well are you doing

  983. on that one? Somebody says something mean to you on Instagram,

  984. you immediately slam them back on anything else. I depend

  985. on God's defense, not mine. And how about where are

  986. you looking for your source of security? Are you depending on, man,

  987. I'm so nervous because I don't have any money, or

  988. are you depending on God to meet your needs?

  989. Give yourself a plus or minus on each of those.

  990. Now, what's the first step you need to take in

  991. this first condition of the blessings of God? Well, you

  992. need to make a public declaration of dependence. You know,

  993. in America, we have the declaration of independence.

  994. And that's a good thing.

  995. But for you personally, you need to make a declaration

  996. of dependence. God, I'm depending on you. in all five

  997. of these areas. By the way, do you know what

  998. the public demonstration of your dependence on God is?

  999. It's baptism.

1000. Baptism is saying to the whole world, I am totally

1001. depending on God. I'm gonna depend on God for my strength.

1002. I'm gonna depend on God for my wisdom, my wealth,

1003. my defender. My plan in life, I'm getting.

1004. All wet for Jesus. I'm all in.

1005. I'm totally submerged into this will and I am in

1006. and God says that's the person that I wanna bless.

1007. Let me show you this last verse. The Bible says

1008. this in Romans chapter six. This is what happens in baptism.

1009. By the way, did you know that baptism is actually

  1010. a Greek word?

  1011. It's baptizo.

1012. And the word baptism simply means to dip or submerge.

  1013. So baptism isn't actually a word, it's a transliteration. The

1014. translation of the word baptism is dip. So like chips

1015. and dips, so you'd go home to a party and say,

1016. I'd like some chips and baptism, please. Because the word

1017. baptism literally means dip. That's what it means, it means

  1018. to dip.

1019. Under, okay? This is what happens in baptism.

1020. When we went under the water, we left the old

1021. sin behind. And when we came up out of the water,

1022. we entered into a new life of grace. Then Romans

1023. 6 says this, when we're lowered into the water, it's

1024. like the burial of Jesus, and we're raised up out

1025. of the water, it's like the resurrection of Jesus. We

1026. are raised to live a new life. Now, if you've

1027. never been baptized like Jesus modeled, and in the way

1028. Jesus was baptized, as an adult, he was 33 years

1029. old when he was baptized. You need to do that

1030. as your public declaration of dependence. And you say, well,

1031. I was baptized as a baby. I'm not talking about that.

1032. Lots of us were baptized as babies. Lots of us

1033. were dedicated, confirmed as babies. There's nothing wrong with that,

1034. but that was your parents' decision, not yours. You don't

1035. even remember it. When Jesus was a baby, they took

1036. him to the temple and he was dedicated. That's what

1037. his parents did, and there's nothing wrong, that's a good

1038. thing to dedicate your baby to Jesus. But when Jesus

1039. was a full grown adult, he went out and made

1040. his decision to be publicly baptized. Have you done that?

1041. Jesus commanded it. He commanded it, that we be baptized.

1042. And he said, if you're ashamed of me, I'll be

1043. ashamed of you. It's your coming out of the closet

1044. for Jesus party. Little boy asked me one time, Pastor Rick,

1045. when can I get advertised? And that's what baptism is.

1046. It's an advertisement for Jesus. Baptism says, I am all in.

1047. I'm getting all wet. I'm totally submerged. I'm really into this.

1048. I'm not just tinkling in here, twinkling in. I'm just

  1049. tippling in.

1050. No, I am all in.

1051. And I'm gonna depend on God for my strength. And

1052. I'm gonna depend on God for my wisdom and for

1053. my wealth and for my defense and for the plan

1054. of my life. If you haven't done that, what are

1055. you waiting on Really, why not now? I mean, could

1056. it be that your pride is keeping you from being baptized?

1057. That's the exact opposite of being humble in spirit. It's

1058. the exact opposite of the attitude that God blesses. I'll

1059. tell you what, it's the end of the day. After

1060. this service, Tom, will you do this with me?

  1061. Okay. Okay.

1062. We're gonna go out and we're gonna do a baptism

1063. after this service, okay? And we got water, and we

1064. got baptism, and we got, you know, towels and, okay? So,

1065. this is gonna be the Nike baptism, just do it.

1066. Okay? So I'm making the decision to.

1067. Just do it, you make the decision to just do it,

1068. and we'll see you out there. Let's bow for prayer. Oh,

1069. let me show you one more verse. Look up here

1070. on the screen. Never mind. Matthew 5, 6, happy are

1071. those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires.

1072. God will satisfy them fully. Do what God requires. Let's

1073. bow our head. I'm gonna pray a prayer and you

1074. can follow me in it. Dear God, thank you for

1075. sending Jesus to teach us how to live.

  1076. Just say that.

1077. Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to teach us

1078. how to live and to die for my sins. I

1079. want your blessing on my life. So today, I wanna

1080. take this first step of learning to depend on you more.

1081. Let's pray this. I wanna depend on your wisdom this week.

1082. Your wisdom, not mine, so you can replace my confusion

1083. with your confidence. I wanna depend on your strength, not mine,

1084. so your power can show up in my weakness. I

1085. wanna depend on your timing Help me to be patient

1086. and quietly trust. I know that at the right time,

1087. you can change things instantly. And Lord, when people misunderstand

1088. me or criticize me, I wanna quietly trust you for

1089. my defense. I don't wanna retaliate, I wanna be like Jesus. Finally, Lord,

1090. I wanna look to you as a source to meet

  1091. all my needs.

1092. Help me this week to walk in the strength of

1093. the Lord. Help me to walk in the strength of

  1094. the Lord.

1095. And as my public declaration of dependence, I want to

1096. be baptized. And I pray this in Jesus' name.

  1097. Amen.
