  1. Hello, everybody.

  2. Thank you so much for joining us here on Pastor

  3. Rick's Daily Hope with Rick Warren. Well, today we're continuing

  4. in this timely series called Strategies for Stressful Times. In

  5. this series, Pastor Rick shares timeless truths from God's Word

  6. that will help you manage stress, overcome worry, and experience

  7. the peace and stability that only God can provide. Well,

  8. I can't wait to get started with part one of

  9. a message called Jesus's Secrets to Resilience.

  10. This week, I want us to continue with part five

  11. of my series called Strategies for Stressful Times. Specifically, we're

  12. going to look at how Jesus personally handled stress. And

  13. I want you to see what I call Jesus's Seven

  14. Secrets of Resilience. Now, maybe you've never thought about it,

  15. but the Bible says that we are to look to

  16. Jesus as our model for enduring tough times. The Bible

  17. says we are to look to Jesus as our model

  18. for enduring tough times. We are to follow his example

  19. of resilience and we are to follow his example of

  20. stress management. And the Bible says it this way. If

  21. you've got your notes there, right at the top of

  22. your outline, Hebrews chapter 12 says this, verses one to

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  23. three out of the New Living Translations. Since we are

  24. surrounded by such a crowd of witnesses to this life

  25. of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows

  26. us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress.

  27. And let us run with endurance, underline that, run with

  28. endurance the race that God has set before us. We

  29. do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus. Do you

  30. see that? We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus,

  31. on whom our faith depends from start to finish. Jesus

  32. was willing to die a shameful death on the cross

  33. because of the joy he knew would be his afterwards.

  34. And now he is seated in the place of highest

  35. honor beside God's throne in heaven. Think about all he endured.

  36. That's what we're talking about this weekend, resilience. Think about

  37. all he endured when sinful people did such terrible things

  38. to him so that you don't become weary and give up. Now,

  39. what does that passage tell us? Nobody experienced greater stress

  40. than Jesus Christ. He experienced enormous pressure. He was criticized constantly.

  41. He was misunderstood. There were constant demands on his life.

  42. He had little privacy and there were people who were

  43. trying constantly to kill him. I doubt that's true of you,

  44. but that's stress. And yet when we look at the

  45. life of Jesus Christ, we look at his ministry, we

  46. see that he walked and he lived with an amazing peacefulness.

  47. No matter how difficult the situation became, he modeled a

  48. calmness and a resilience in the face of outrageous demands.

  49. And this is why the book of Hebrews advises us

  50. to keep our eyes on Jesus. And that's what we're

  51. gonna do today. We're gonna watch his example of endurance.

  52. We're gonna learn his secrets of resilience. And today I'm

  53. going to unpack Jesus' seven secrets of resilience. You're going

  54. to need this. So I want to encourage you to

  55. take notes. Now we learn these seven secrets of resilience

  56. from Jesus' own words. Let's get started. The first secret

  57. of resilience when you're under stress is this, write this down.

  58. Remember how much God loves me. That's the first antidote

  59. It's the first secret of resilience. It is the principle

  60. of compassion. Jesus had no doubt in his mind that God,

  61. the Father, loved him. He talks about it over and

  62. over and over and over. Just one verse on your outline,

  63. John 10, verse 17. The Father loves me. The Father

    John 10:17

  64. loves me. Now, knowing and remembering that God loves you

  65. unconditionally and God loves you extravagantly, And God loves you continuously.

  66. And he will never stop loving you. That is the foundation.

  67. That's the first secret, the foundation of a resilient life.

  68. As Paul says in the book of Romans, if God's

  69. for us, who could be against us, okay? Who could

  70. be against us? We are resilient because we know that

  71. God will never stop loving us. Now, I know what

  72. you're thinking. You think, well, of course God loves Jesus.

  73. He's his son. But did you know that Jesus said

  74. the same thing about you too? Yeah, in John 15

  75. verse nine and 10 says this, Jesus says, just as

  76. the father has loved me, so have I loved you.

  77. Now remain in my love. And if you obey my commands,

  78. you'll remain in my love. Now I've talked to you many,

  79. many times about how much God loves you because it

  80. is really the basis of your personal security. If you're

  81. not convinced that God always loves you, that he loves

  82. you unconditionally, completely, instantly, continuously, that he never stops loving you,

  83. that you can't make him stop loving you. If you

  84. don't really have this foundation of God's unconditional love in

  85. your life, you're gonna be easy prey for the disapproval

  86. of other people. You're gonna be a people pleaser. Now,

  87. how much does God love you? Well, look there on

  88. your outline. 1 John 3, verse one says this. How great.

  89. How great is the love of the Father that he's

  90. lavished on us that we should be called the children

  91. of God. And that is what we are. So the

  92. first key to resilience is to build the baseline that

  93. God will never stop loving me. Jesus knew it, you

  94. need to know it. Number two, the second key that

  95. we see in the life of Jesus and you need

  96. this for your stress resistance is this. Remember who I am.

  97. Don't just remember that God loves you unconditionally. Remember who

  98. I am. This is the principle of identification. Now, why

  99. is this important? Because if you're not sure who you

  100. really are, you're going to be whipped around and manipulated

  101. and molded by the pressures and the problems and the

  102. other people around you. when you have a confused identity,

  103. when you have an unclear identity, when you don't really

  104. know who you are, it makes you more prone to stress. Why?

  105. Because our culture will try to fit you in its mold.

  106. It's gonna make you into what it wants you to be.

  107. And until you settle this issue, first, God loves me unconditionally, second,

  108. I know who I am, I'm a child of God,

  109. you're gonna be prone to stress. Now, we know that

  110. Jesus never had any doubts about his identity. He knew

  111. exactly who he was. In fact, 18 times in scripture,

  112. he publicly defines himself, 18 times. These are famous statements

  113. called the I am statements of Jesus, the I am

  114. statements of Jesus. I've listed just a few of them

  115. there on your outline. Mark chapter 14, John 8, John 14,

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  116. John 6, many different places. Jesus says, I am, and

  117. then he fills it in. I am the light of

  118. the world. I am the son of God. I am

  119. the way. I am the truth. I am the life.

  120. I am the bread of life. Over and over, he

  121. defines himself. He knew exactly who he was. Why is

  122. this helpful in handling stress? Well, in John 8, 18,

  123. Jesus says, in other words, I testify to my own behalf.

  124. I don't need other people to tell me who I am.

  125. I know who I am. I don't depend on the

  126. opinions of others to validate myself. Do you do that?

  127. If you depend on the opinions of others to validate yourself,

  128. you are prone to stress and you certainly aren't resilient

  129. to chronic stress. The fact is, if you don't know

  130. who you are, other people will decide it for you.

  131. They'll force you into a mold. They'll create stress. You'll

  132. end up pretending. You'll end up faking it. You'll end

  133. up wearing a mask. You'll end up trying to be

  134. a man or woman that you're not really who you are.

  135. You're who everybody else wants you to be. And that's

  136. called stress. Stress happens when you try to be something

  137. you're not. Doesn't matter if it's for the sake of

  138. your parents or the sake of your boss or the

  139. sake of your spouse or the sake of your boyfriend.

  140. Doesn't matter who you're doing it for. You're going to

  141. be pressured and you're going to be stressed and you're

  142. not going to be resilient. Now you say, well, of course,

  143. Jesus knew he was the light of the world. Of

  144. course he knew that. But did you know that Jesus

  145. said the same thing about you? He said, I'm the

  146. light of the world. But in Matthew 5, 13 to 16,

  147. Jesus says this, you are the light of the world.

  148. He says, you are the salt of the earth and

  149. you are the light of the world. Don't hide your light.

  150. Do you realize how special God says you are? There's

  151. nobody in the world exactly like you. When God made you,

  152. he broke the mold. Just like God doesn't make two

  153. snowflakes same, God doesn't make clones of people. Even identical

  154. twins are different in thousands of different ways. There will

  155. never be in the history of humankind someone like you

  156. at all. You're unique and you need to know that

  157. God loves you unconditionally and you need to know who

  158. you are. Now, identity, this issue of identity, this is

  159. the second principle, the principle of identity. When you don't

  160. know your identity, it increases your stress. And it comes

  161. out two different ways, comparing and copying, comparing, copying, comparing.

  162. When you say, well, I'm going to compare myself to

  163. everybody else. God says, don't do that. And copying others,

  164. we all begin as originals, but we end up as

  165. carbon copies of other people. God does not want copies

  166. of anybody. God does not want clones. That's why he

  167. only created one of you. God wants you to be you.

  168. And when you get to heaven, God isn't gonna say,

  169. why weren't you more like Moses? The point is you

  170. must become comfortable with being you. You must accept your

  171. strengths and you must accept your limitations and your weaknesses.

  172. You must accept the truth about you. When you do that,

  173. this second principle, the principle of I know who I am,

  174. you'll have a lot less stress, all right? Now here's

  175. the third secret of resilience that we learn from looking

  176. to Jesus as our model. I know that God loves me.

  177. I know who I am. Here's the third thing. Know

  178. who I'm trying to please. Know who I'm trying to please.

  179. In other words, know who you're living for. Now, this

  180. is the principle of motivation. You need to know what

  181. is your deepest motivation. If you don't know that, if

  182. you haven't figured it out, you are prone to get stressed.

  183. What motivates you every day? You see, mixed motivation, are

  184. a third great cause of stress. Jesus said, no man

  185. can serve two masters. This third cause of stress is

  186. trying to please everybody. The truth is you can't. You

  187. get crowd A pleased, crowd B ticks off, gets ticked off.

  188. By the time you get crowd B happy, crowd A

  189. is upset again. Did you know that even God can't

  190. please everybody? Somebody's praying for it to rain and somebody's

  191. praying for it to be sunny on the same day.

  192. Somebody's praying for some team to win and others praying

  193. for another team to win or this guy to get

  194. elected and somebody else is praying for somebody else. You know,

  195. as a pastor, I have learned that for 42 years,

  196. I'm always disappointing somebody. Why? Because everybody has different expectations. Okay,

  197. they have different expectations. The Bible says the fear of

  198. man is a trap. It will capture you. It will

  199. cause you to stumble. That's why Jesus says in John 5, 30,

  200. I'm not trying to do what I want, but only

  201. what my father who sent me wants. I know who

  202. I'm trying to please. Now, if you're not trying to

  203. please God, in all likelihood, you're trying to please a

  204. bunch of people. It's a whole lot easier to say,

  205. I'm just gonna focus on pleasing God and let the

  206. chips fall where they may. Because if you please God,

  207. it'll always be the right thing. If you don't please

  208. God and you're trying to please others, you just get

  209. stressed out with what this person wants, that person wants.

  210. This was the third reason Jesus was so stress resistant.

  211. He was only trying to please one person. Notice there

  212. on your outline, John 8, 29. I always do those

  213. things that are pleasing to him. And if you're pleasing God,

  214. it's always the right thing. It also simplifies your life.

  215. Because I don't have to worry about, am I pleasing

  216. everybody else? I'm just trying to please God. Jesus never

  217. let approval, or for that matter, rejection, control him. He

  218. lived for an audience of one. As I mentioned earlier,

  219. Luke 16, 13, no man can serve two masters. You

  220. can't please multiple audiences. He focused only on pleasing God. Now,

  221. this is what you need to do if you wanna

  222. be resistant to stress and if you wanna be resilient

  223. to when you get knocked down. Galatians 1.10, Paul says,

  224. I'm not trying to be a people pleaser. This is Paul.

  225. I'm not trying to be a people pleaser. No, I'm

  226. only trying to please God. If I're still trying to

  227. please people, he says, I wouldn't be Christ's servant. I

  228. love that in the New Living Translation. One of the

  229. biggest myths, that will make you miserable is this, I

  230. must be loved by everybody in order to be happy.

  231. That's just not true. You don't need other people's approval

  232. to be happy. But let me ask you, right now,

  233. whose approval are you depending on for your happiness? Who

  234. are you still trying to please? Somebody's been trying to

  235. please an unpleasable parent and they've been dead for a while.

  236. You know, we love, to blame other people for our stress.

  237. I have to do this. I must do this. I

  238. can't do that. You are as free as you choose

  239. to be. Nobody can pressure you without your permission. That's

  240. why the third secret of resilience is know who you're

  241. trying to please. Jesus said, I know who I'm trying

  242. to please. I'm only trying to please my father. I'm

  243. not worried about anybody else. That's why we're looking at

  244. him as our model. Now, here's the fourth thing that

  245. Jesus did. Here's the fourth secret of resilience and resistance

  246. to stress. I need to not only know God loves me.

  247. I need to not only know who I'm trying to please.

  248. I need to not only know that God has called me.

  249. That's the fourth thing. I know my calling. If you

  250. wanna be resistant to stress, you need to get alone

  251. with God until you know your calling. I must know

  252. exactly and believe exactly what God has called me to

  253. do with my life. Now, this is the principle of vocation, vocation.

  254. And until you clarify this and it becomes crystal clear

  255. in your mind, you're gonna be more prone to getting

  256. stressed out. But when you know what God's called you

  257. to do, you know what God has called you to do,

  258. you also know what God has called you not to do.

  259. In other words, when you're sure of your calling, you

  260. know what's your business, but you also know what's none

  261. of your business. And that simplifies life too. Jesus knew

  262. exactly what he was called to do. Here's the fourth thing.

  263. In John 8, 14, he says, I know where I

  264. came from and I know where I'm going. To me,

  265. that sounds like a purpose-driven life. I know where I

  266. came from and I know where I'm going. He lived

  267. a purpose-driven life.

  268. What a great message from Pastor Rick today. There's something

  269. I always take away from his message. Here's Rick to

  270. tell you how you can help support this ministry.

  271. Jesus told his disciples that they should live their lives

  272. according to five specific purposes. He said, you've got to

  273. love God with all your heart. That's worship. And love

  274. your neighbor as yourself. That's ministry. That's called the great commandment.

  275. And then Jesus said, go make disciples. That's evangelism. Baptize

  276. them into the family of God. That's fellowship. a sign

  277. of fellowship. And then he said, teach them, obey everything

  278. I've taught you. That's discipleship. And we call that the

  279. great commission. We believe at Daily Hope that a great

  280. commitment to the great commandment and the great commission will

  281. produce a great Christian, a great church, a great company,

  282. a great community. You know, I started Daily Hope so

  283. I could spread the good news about Jesus, not just

  284. across America, but all around the world. And we want

  285. people to know that God's word is filled with hope

  286. and truth. And the power that we need to follow

  287. him every day is available to every single one. You

  288. know as well as I do that the word of

  289. God changes lives. It's alive, it's active, and it breathes

  290. new life and new love into all of our lives.

  291. So wherever you listen to this, whether you listen on

  292. the website, whether you listen on a radio station, whether

  293. you listen through a podcast, you're a part of the

  294. Daily Hope family. And I need your help. We could

  295. not do this without your support. We're 100% listener funded.

  296. Would you continue to pray for this broadcast? And would

  297. you continue to support us? And write to me. Let

  298. me hear from you. I absolutely love reading the stories

  299. that are sent to me. So write me, pray for me,

  300. and support this ministry. And God will bless it. And

  301. God will bless you. And we'll get to heaven. And

  302. we'll thank God for all the people going to be

  303. in heaven because you cared.

  304. Hey, if you'd like to support Pastor Rick's Daily Hope,
