  1. with the step into your holy of holies

  2. today. I don't want to just run through

  3. the motions

  4. this morning. God,

  5. give us all courage to step close to

  6. you. Jesus,

  7. we drop all the facades this morning and

  8. we come as we are, Lord, this morning

  9. because that's how you take us today.

  10. as we are.

  11. And your goodness is gonna get us over

  12. the finish line today, God. Not our

  13. goodness today.

  14. Because I love you, Lord.

  15. Oh, your mercy never fails me.

  16. And all my days

  17. I've been held in your hands. [singing]

  18. From the moment that I wake up

  19. until I lay my head,

  20. I will sing

  21. of the goodness

  22. of God.

  23. All my life,

  24. all my life, you have been faithful.

  25. All my life you [singing] have been so

  26. so good

  27. with every breath that I am [singing]

  28. able

  29. and I will sing

  30. of the goodness

  31. of God. I love your voice. I love your

  32. voice.

  33. You have led [singing]

  34. me through the fire.

  35. In the darkest night,

  36. you are close [singing] like no other.

  37. I've known you as a father.

  38. I've known you as a friend

  39. and I [singing] have lived in the

  40. goodness

  41. of God. All my life,

  42. all my life, you have been faithful.

  43. Oh my life, you have been [singing] so

  44. so good

  45. with every breath that I am able.

  46. [music and singing]

  47. And I will sing

  48. of the goodness of God. Oh my life

  49. you've been faithful. Sing it. All my

  50. life you have been faithful.

  51. All my life you have been so [singing]

  52. so good.

  53. with every breath that I am able [music]

  54. and I will sing

  55. of the goodness

  56. of God.

  57. Listen, our worship is about him. It's

  58. not about us.

  59. And God's praise isn't isn't conditional

  60. on where we're at this morning. His

  61. praise is a mandate. It happens one way

  62. or the other. Let's make his praise high

  63. this morning. He's worthy of praise

  64. today. This is about you, God, and what

  65. you've been doing in our lives. So, we

  66. sing to you, God. Your goodness,

  67. your goodness is running after. It's

  68. running after me.

  69. Your goodness is running after. It's

  70. running after me. With my life laid

  71. down, I surrender now. I give you

  72. everything.

  73. >> Your goodness is running after. It's

  74. running after me.

  75. >> Your goodness.

  76. Sing it out. Your goodness is running

  77. after. It's running after me. down.

  78. Your [music] goodness is running after.

  79. It's running after me. With my [singing]

  80. life laid [music] down, I surrender now.

  81. I give you everything. [music]

  82. Your goodness is [singing] running

  83. after. It's running after me. [music]

  84. One more time. Your goodness.

  85. Sing it. Your goodness is running after.

  86. It's running after me. We believe your

  87. goodness is running after. It's running

  88. after me. With my life laid down, I

  89. surrender now. I give you everything.

  90. Yeah. Your goodness [music] is running

  91. after. [singing]

  92. It's running after me.

  93. Oh my life you've been faithful. Sing

  94. it. Oh my life you have been faithful.

  95. [music]

  96. Yeah. Oh my life you have been so so

  97. good.

  98. with every breath that I am able.

  99. [music and singing]

  100. And I will sing

  101. of the goodness [singing]

  102. of God.

  103. Yes, I will sing of the goodness

  104. [singing]

  105. of God.

  106. Yes, I will sing of the goodness

  107. of God.

  108. And we believe that when we gather and

  109. we press in and we press into God,

  110. [music] we move into him, he moves

  111. closer. And uh oftentimes a passage will

  112. be stirred [music] up. And so Roger uh

  113. would like to share a passage with us

  114. this morning.

  115. This uh song [music] kind of prompted

  116. this.

  117. It's in Philippians 3

  118. and Paul is talking to the Philippians

  119. church and he says in verse 7,

  120. "But whatever was to my profit,

  121. I now consider [music] loss for the sake

  122. of Christ.

  123. What is more, I consider everything a

  124. loss compared to the surpassing

  125. greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my

  126. Lord. For whose sake I have lost all

  127. things I consider them rubbish, that I

  128. may gain Christ and be found in him. not

  129. having a righteousness of my own that

  130. comes from the law, but that which is

  131. through faith in Christ, the

  132. righteousness that comes from God and is

  133. by faith. I want to know Christ and the

  134. power of his resurrection and the

  135. fellowship of sharing [music] in his

  136. sufferings,

  137. becoming like him in his death. And so

  138. [music] somehow to attain to the

  139. resurrection from the dead,

  140. Paul was

  141. an apostle

  142. and he knew Jesus.

  143. And I just [music] encourage us to be

  144. drawn into Christ this morning.

  145. If you're here,

  146. thank you for [music] coming to share

  147. with all the fellowship of the

  148. believers.

  149. His presence is here this [music]

  150. morning. Enjoy his presence.

  151. Open your hearts to him [music]

  152. because it's about Jesus that draws us

  153. in.

  154. Cuz

  155. there was no way [music]

  156. until you made one.

  157. Grace upon grace. [singing]

  158. Hallelu.

  159. Even though I don't deserve it, you did

  160. it.

  161. And even though [music and singing] I

  162. couldn't earn it, you give it.

  163. Sing who am I [singing] that you keep me

  164. [music] on your mind. God, I'm just

  165. grateful for you.

  166. God, I'm just grateful for you.

  167. And all my life you've been right here

  168. by my side. God, I'm just grateful for

  169. you. God, I'm just grateful for

  170. [singing and music] you. Holy and holy,

  171. holy.

  172. There's only one.

  173. I give you [singing] glory

  174. for all that you've done.

  175. Even though I don't deserve it, you did

  176. it.

  177. And even though I couldn't earn it, you

  178. give it.

  179. Who am I? Who am I [singing and music]

  180. that you keep me? Oh, you're my God, I'm

  181. just [music] grateful for you. God, I'm

  182. just grateful for you all my life. Sing

  183. all my life. You've been right here by

  184. my side. God, I'm just grateful for you.

  185. God, I'm just grateful for who am I?

  186. Singing out who

  187. am I that you keep me on your mind. God,

  188. I'm just grateful [music]

  189. for you. God, I'm just grateful for you.

  190. [singing]

  191. All my life, all my life, you've been

  192. right here by my side. God, I'm just

  193. grateful for you. God, I'm just grateful

  194. for you.

  195. This is all about you, God.

  196. This is all [music] about you, God. This

  197. is your story, God.

  198. Oo,

  199. this is your story in my life. Your

  200. faithfulness day after day. [music] God

  201. sing I

  202. I'm lifting both of my hands

  203. cuz you gave me chance after chance

  204. after chance. [music and singing] And I

  205. I'm living all that I am cuz you gave me

  206. chance [music] after [singing] chance

  207. after chance. Singer,

  208. [screaming]

  209. I'm lifting both of my hands cuz you

  210. gave me chance after chance after

  211. chance.

  212. And

  213. [screaming]

  214. I'm giving all that I am cuz you gave me

  215. [music] chance after chance after

  216. chance. Who am I? Who am [singing]

  217. I that you keep me on your mind? God,

  218. I'm just grateful for you. God, I'm just

  219. grateful for you all my life. All my

  220. life you've been right here by my side.

  221. God, I'm just grateful for you. God, I'm

  222. just grateful for who am I singing who?

  223. Come on, church.

  224. Lift him up. God, I'm just

  225. God. I'm just [music]

  226. >> all my life. Sing it out.

  227. >> Who am I that you keep me on your mind?

  228. God, I'm just [music] grateful for you.

  229. >> God, I'm just grateful for [singing]

  230. you.

  231. >> And all my life, you've been right here

  232. by my side. [music and singing] God, I'm

  233. just grateful for you.

  234. >> God, I'm just grateful for you.

  235. Oh,

  236. let's practice just a moment of

  237. lingering.

  238. [singing] He is so good.

  239. Stretch our gaze out longer upon you

  240. [music] this morning, God.

  241. He's been writing a story in your life.

  242. Connect with it this morning that God

  243. has been faithful all of your days.

  244. And we were praying in pre-ervice.

  245. He was even faithful.

  246. When we were his enemy,

  247. he was loving us.

  248. And right now in these days, God, when I

  249. am faithless, you are faithful, God,

  250. you're writing a story in in our lives,

  251. Jesus.

  252. And it's built not on us, not on our

  253. works, God, but on the finished work of

  254. Jesus Christ.

  255. So, we rest,

  256. we settle in

  257. to your faithfulness, God, today.

  258. We build our lives

  259. upon the unmoving, unshaking rock of

  260. Jesus Christ today.

  261. You're the cornerstone, Jesus.

  262. Build your church today [music] in this

  263. place.

  264. In your name we pray. Amen. Amen. Tim

  265. Well, we're about to say our

  266. our Thanksgiving liturgy that we've been

  267. doing for the last month, and it's been

  268. so rich to kind of think about our

  269. stewardship in in many dimensions.

  270. [music] But this morning, the sense that

  271. I have is just um his lavish love for

  272. us. We have been given so much. The

  273. sense of thankfulness that is in this

  274. room, it's palpable. Like his presence

  275. is the best thing in the universe.

  276. It is what brings us life when we're

  277. dead. It's what le gives us freedom and

  278. healing when we're stuck.

  279. And just to be in his presence is what

  280. we're designed for, right?

  281. So we prayed this morning before um

  282. before service that every one of us that

  283. the that the we would we'd lean into

  284. reality. We would the scales on our eyes

  285. would rem be removed so that we would

  286. not think that God is far from us.

  287. That we would come to our senses like

  288. the prodigal son and not think that the

  289. father is angry with us but he's he's

  290. searching for us whether we know him or

  291. not. He's longing for us to come to him

  292. and receive our identity and everything

  293. that we need to live as a son and a

  294. daughter of his. So when we say this

  295. liturgy, think of your whole life and

  296. your stewardship

  297. and how we give back to him and our

  298. gifts and our talents and our resources

  299. and our time. It's it's nothing when

  300. we're aware of what we have been given

  301. and what we are being given on a daily

  302. basis.

  303. So, will you read this with me?

  304. >> In truth, I have nothing but you, O

  305. Christ,

  306. nothing that I might call my own

  307. [snorts]

  308. teaches.

  309. All things I give not what is mine but

  310. confess Lord that all I have is yours

  311. with every

  312. professing this timeless truth. Lord let

  313. me love well in my giving even as you

  314. father have loved me so well by giving

  315. me all things in Christ.

  316. that we plant these mortal seeds in

  317. expectation of immortal harvest.

  318. Bless now, oh Lord, this gift and its

  319. benefits that I might be received as

  320. evidence of your mercy and multip

  321. Ushers,

  322. if you could go ahead and pass the

  323. baskets.

  324. Hey, good morning church. My name is

  325. Mary Menddees. I get to do the

  326. announcements today. If you notice,

  327. there is a QR code. If you go back,

  328. there's a QR code. This is for the

  329. church center app. And this is a great

  330. way for you to know what's going on in

  331. our church. Um, it's also the way that

  332. we check in our kids. So, if you're new

  333. here, feel like there's some new faces.

  334. Um, you will need to download this app

  335. and register your children and then

  336. they'll get a sticker printed off and

  337. that will be the way that you pick up

  338. your kids too. Okay? So, it's for

  339. security and it's also for you to

  340. keeping um up to date with what's going

  341. on in our church. So, scan the QR code,

  342. download the app, and we'll get you

  343. going. All right, two quick

  344. announcements. Uh, tonight there's youth

  345. group. So, if you are a high schooler,

  346. you have had quite a busy weekend in

  347. exit. It has been homecoming homecoming

  348. dance and tonight we're just throwing in

  349. youth group. So,

  350. tonight youth group at the Pine Street

  351. Building, okay? From 6:00 to 7:30. Come

  352. invite your friends, you guys. This is a

  353. great opportunity for people who don't

  354. know Jesus to come and experience people

  355. who love Jesus and have fun. So, please

  356. come 6:00 to 7:30 at the Pine Street

  357. Building. It will be a great time.

  358. There'll be food and fun. So, come. And

  359. then we have an alpha retreat for our

  360. junior highs. So, they've been going

  361. through an alpha course. This is sixth,

  362. seventh, and eighth graders. They've

  363. been going through an alpha course and

  364. learning more about God and about Jesus

  365. and about who he is in their lives. And

  366. there will be a retreat to end this

  367. course on Saturday, October 24th. It

  368. will be at the Britain's house which

  369. again you can find the location on the

  370. church center app and it's from 8 to 4.

  371. So please register your junior higher

  372. for this event. It will be really really

  373. impactful. Um they'll have awesome

  374. opportunity to respond to what God's

  375. doing in their hearts and to have fun

  376. and to be fed. So register them 8 to 4

  377. at the Britain's October 24th.

  378. And with that, it is time to excuse the

  379. kids, but listen, if you are in a

  380. preschool, tots, you're going to meet

  381. Miss Misty back at the back door over

  382. here. So, if you have a tot preschooler,

  383. you'll meet and you they're going

  384. outside. Okay. If you are in

  385. kindergarten through junior high, you're

  386. going to go to the hub, which is the

  387. room behind the donuts. Okay. So

  388. you guys, everyone else who's not a

  389. child, meet and greet and we'll get

  390. started in a little bit.

  391. All right. All right. Grab a seat.

  392. My name is Travis Aland and I am Mary

  393. Mendes's older brother. And

  394. if you're

  395. if you're uh wondering why they gave

  396. this stranger a microphone, um it's

  397. because I pastor Radiant Vicelia. And so

  398. I get the joy of being uh with you uh

  399. this morning. And it's really powerful

  400. for me to

  401. uh be led this morning in pondering

  402. God's faithfulness over my life. And I

  403. hope you guys took the opportunity that

  404. Sean gave us to think about how faithful

  405. God's been through the years. But my

  406. first job in ministry was in this

  407. sanctuary uh working for the exit church

  408. of God. And I got uh hired to lead

  409. worship. I had led worship only once uh

  410. before.

  411. And I told them that when they offered

  412. me a job, I was like, I think you got

  413. the wrong guy. I've only done this once.

  414. Um, and so I can remember being a

  415. 19-year-old and leading uh right here

  416. with um Crystal Guzman on my right and

  417. Doobie uh on my left. And I I was tasked

  418. with leading the Church of God's Youth

  419. uh every Sunday morning at what they

  420. called the Rock, I think is what it was

  421. called. So pretty powerful for me to be

  422. in this sanctuary pondering God's

  423. faithfulness and all the chances

  424. that I've received over the years. So I

  425. planted Radiant Church 22 years ago

  426. and I did that with a a group of friends

  427. and and and my wife Tiffany who today's

  428. our 24th wedding anniversary. So, yeah.

  429. [applause]

  430. And I I was a little worried that I was

  431. going to remember how many years I've

  432. been pastoring and not remember how many

  433. years we've been married. It's getting

  434. in the It's getting up there to where

  435. I'm starting to lose track. You know,

  436. I'm like 20 four

  437. 24. So when we planted the church, uh we

  438. gathered an informal leadership team.

  439. The church met in my home for the first

  440. year. Uh my sister Mary would have been

  441. there. Sean and uh Lindsay would have

  442. been there uh as well.

  443. And um as the church began to grow, I

  444. started asking a question. And the

  445. question was this. How should this

  446. church be led? who makes decisions

  447. around here because I think we were

  448. changing and change requires leadership.

  449. And the best way I can say it is that

  450. when we first planted the church, it was

  451. like we had an infant and it needed very

  452. little. It needed care, of course. It

  453. needed you to goooo and gaga over it and

  454. there were some diapers.

  455. But about three years into leading the

  456. church, I started to feel like the

  457. church was acting like a toddler. And I

  458. was kind of thinking like, who's gonna

  459. tell this kid he can't jump on the

  460. couch? Who decides the direction of this

  461. church? Again, it was very uh loose and

  462. uh informal kind of leadership

  463. structure.

  464. And so I started asking the question as

  465. at at 27 years old, how should a church

  466. be led? And if you know anything about

  467. church, you know that different churches

  468. are led in different ways. So I started

  469. studying the scriptures and it led to

  470. about a year of research and a year of

  471. conversation with other pastors. Um, but

  472. I came to the conclusion and I'm even

  473. more convinced after 22 years of leading

  474. a church that the local church should be

  475. le led by a team of elders. That that is

  476. the best, most beautiful, most biblical

  477. way to lead a local church. Now, I get

  478. that that word elder is probably not one

  479. that you use very often. Pastor is one

  480. that we use often. What's interesting

  481. about the English word pastor is that

  482. only it only appears once in the New

  483. Testament.

  484. The word elder appears almost 70 times.

  485. And so I want to describe what we

  486. believe to be uh an elder. And actually

  487. on the back of the printouts you're

  488. receiving, there's

  489. a bit of a position paper that we've

  490. written on what an elder is.

  491. But I get it. You don't use that word

  492. often. And then when you do use it, it's

  493. odd. I always find it strange that some

  494. 20-year-old Mormon kid wants me to call

  495. him elder in his white short sleeve

  496. shirt. I'm like, I'm not sure I'm going

  497. to do that. Like, this feels weird. I

  498. can see your zits. And

  499. so,

  500. what is an elder?

  501. The terms elders and overseers are

  502. interchangeable

  503. and they designate the primary spiritual

  504. leaders of the church. The term elder

  505. emphasizes maturity and overseer

  506. emphasizes the leadership responsibility

  507. and ideally the local church has a

  508. plurality of elders.

  509. Elders are equal in authority but not

  510. equal in influence or gifting. Their

  511. authority is to be expressed in loving

  512. leadership and not lording over the

  513. flock.

  514. Elders are pastors who are responsible

  515. for the whole flock, but they're not the

  516. only ones who pastor because many in the

  517. church possess a pastoral gift.

  518. Elders have final responsibility before

  519. God for prayer ministry, ministry of the

  520. word, including teaching and guarding

  521. the church's doctrine, the

  522. administration of the church, and

  523. shephering the flock. Elders must be

  524. blameless in character, able to teach

  525. scripture and answer those who

  526. contradict it. An elder must be the

  527. husband of one wife. If we understand

  528. this that this qualification does not

  529. exclude an unmarried person, someone

  530. remarried after the death of a spouse,

  531. nor necessarily one who has divorced and

  532. remarried. In every instance, the ph the

  533. phrase describes a reputation as a

  534. faithful husband or a one wife kind of

  535. man. Elders are public leaders and so

  536. valid accusation of blame should only be

  537. accepted by two or three witnesses and

  538. result in a public rebuke like I'll I

  539. would come back on that day.

  540. In scripture elders were selected by the

  541. original church planter or by other

  542. elders with recognition from the

  543. congregation for its leaders. Scripture

  544. does not describe how elders should

  545. organize themselves. So, this is

  546. determined by church size, cultural

  547. context, and specific needs of the body.

  548. Again, all of that's written on the

  549. paperwork you guys just received.

  550. The big question around eldership is not

  551. necessarily what is an elder because

  552. that can kind of change from

  553. congregation to congregation, but the

  554. big question is who? Um,

  555. many of you know this because you know

  556. this at work is that you you can have a

  557. bad system, but if you have good people

  558. in a bad system, it's going to work. And

  559. you can have a good system, but if you

  560. have bad people in a good system, it's

  561. not going to work. Who is a really

  562. important question.

  563. First Timothy 3 says this about who

  564. should be an elder. Here's a trustworthy

  565. saying. Whoever aspires to be an

  566. overseer desires a noble task. Now the

  567. overseer is to be above reproach,

  568. faithful to his wife, temperate,

  569. self-controlled, respectable,

  570. hospitable, able to teach, not given to

  571. drunkenness, not violent, but gentle,

  572. not quarrelome, and not a lover of

  573. money. He must manage his own family

  574. well, and see that his children obey

  575. him. and he must do so in a manner

  576. worthy of full respect.

  577. If anyone doesn't know how to manage his

  578. own family, how can he take care of

  579. God's church?

  580. He must not be a recent convert or he

  581. may become conceited and fall under the

  582. same judgment as the devil. He must also

  583. have a good reputation with outsiders so

  584. that he will not fall into disgrace and

  585. into the devil's trap. I think you've

  586. probably noticed this as I read it, but

  587. character is the overwhelming emphasis

  588. in this passage.

  589. And I also want you to notice a couple

  590. other things. First, this list is not

  591. exhaustive, meaning this is not

  592. everything that a leader should be.

  593. There are other passages that speak to

  594. other traits that leaders need to

  595. possess. So, this isn't meant to be a

  596. closed book passage. We're supposed to

  597. look other places in scripture for other

  598. traits that a leader should possess. The

  599. second thing is that these things are

  600. traits, not legalistic laws.

  601. So, this is this is this can be tough,

  602. but it's like an elder needs to be able

  603. to teach. It doesn't even say good at

  604. teaching, just able. And so, you're

  605. like, "Was that able?"

  606. Yeah, maybe.

  607. eager to serve. Well, how do you measure

  608. that?

  609. How eager? Because on some days I'm more

  610. eager than others.

  611. What about manage his family? Well, I

  612. know some days I'm like, I'm managing my

  613. family well. There's about three of

  614. those a year, you know. So, according to

  615. who?

  616. And how do we measure that? And this is

  617. where I've just found team to be so

  618. helpful because sometimes like you I can

  619. be dealing with a ton of accusation.

  620. Like I can be living under condemnation

  621. from the enemy. And it really helps me

  622. to turn to my brothers and say this is

  623. my life. Do you see anything going on

  624. that would disqualify me from leading in

  625. the church? Because I can tell you this,

  626. the enem is in my ear trying to

  627. disqualify me day and night. So it can

  628. be hard to sort through what's you being

  629. hard on you. what's the enemy accusing

  630. you and what's real and needs to be

  631. dealt with. That's some of the beauty of

  632. being on team.

  633. Thirdly, our pursuit of these qualif

  634. qualifications is not about being a

  635. leader. It's about being more like

  636. Jesus.

  637. >> So, we pursue this stuff not to be an

  638. elder. We pursue this stuff to be

  639. sanctified.

  640. And then we just want people who are

  641. pursuing Jesus to be leading in the

  642. church. This is really important because

  643. if you pursue this like a checkbox and

  644. you just want to become sanctified in

  645. order to become a leader when you're not

  646. a leader, you let go of some of these

  647. decisions you've made to follow hard

  648. after Christ.

  649. The overwhelming emphasis in this text

  650. doesn't have a lot about leading the

  651. church. Actually, 1 Timothy 3 has a lot

  652. about leaders leading themselves.

  653. like and if you lead you, then you'll be

  654. able to lead people in the church.

  655. Paul exhorts the Ephesians elders and he

  656. says, "Keep watch over yourselves

  657. and then all the flock." But it's

  658. possible to keep watch over the flock

  659. and lose sight of ourselves. And so he

  660. says, "I want you to watch your

  661. doctrine. I want you to watch your life,

  662. not just other people's doctrine and

  663. other people's lives."

  664. I love this quote from DL Moody that

  665. says, "I've had more trouble with DL

  666. Moody than any other man alive."

  667. [laughter]

  668. So good.

  669. I've had I

  670. I'm the hardest person in my life to

  671. deal with. I'm the hardest person in my

  672. life to lead.

  673. Jack Parr says, "Looking back, my life

  674. seems to be one long obstacle course

  675. with me as the chief obstacle.

  676. So the first responsibility of a leader

  677. is that they lead themselves that they

  678. oversee and shepherd themselves and then

  679. this qualifies them to lead others. But

  680. here's the list. There are a number of

  681. things with relation to self.

  682. That a person be sober minded. That

  683. would be mentally and emotionally stable

  684. self-controlled that they have a

  685. disciplined life. Not a drunkard without

  686. addictions and not a lover of money.

  687. Financially content and upright. Content

  688. being probably the more difficult one.

  689. Right. Relation to family. Husband of

  690. one wife. A onewoman man. Submissive

  691. children like a successful father and

  692. manages family well. Provides for, leads

  693. and organizes family and relation to

  694. others. Respectable like worth following

  695. and imitating. Hospitable, welcoming

  696. strangers. Hospitable uh has to do with

  697. welcoming others, not welcoming

  698. brothers.

  699. So, this is an open door to the

  700. outsider, not just hosting church

  701. potlucks for the insider.

  702. Not violent

  703. like eventempered,

  704. gentle, that'd be kind and gracious and

  705. loving. Not quarrelome and well thought

  706. of by outsiders. that would be respected

  707. by exit

  708. and specifically non-Christians in exit.

  709. What I think is crazy powerful about

  710. this list is what's not said. So that's

  711. quite a list.

  712. What's really wild to me is what's not

  713. on this list because there's a number of

  714. things that we equate with spiritual

  715. maturity that are not on this list. Like

  716. gifting.

  717. Gifting is not on this list. And we

  718. often think if someone's really gifted,

  719. they must be really spiritually mature.

  720. And then we're always really

  721. disappointed when we find out that's not

  722. true. Or what about personality? There's

  723. nothing like on here that says the

  724. Lord's servant must be an extrovert.

  725. And you know, if you're here and an

  726. introvert that you feel like

  727. misunderstood often. And there's nothing

  728. that says like, you know, the pastor

  729. must be the life of the party. That's

  730. not in here. How about this? This is

  731. wild. There's no no mention of

  732. theological training.

  733. And when I meet someone with letters

  734. behind their name, I go, "Wow, they must

  735. be really spiritually immature." Maybe,

  736. maybe not. Or how about this one?

  737. There's no reference to power. When I

  738. see power, when I see someone cast out

  739. demons, when I see someone heal the

  740. sick, when I see someone operate in

  741. power, I think, they must be spiritually

  742. mature. There's no mention of power in

  743. this passage. How about this one? We

  744. love this one. Zeal, passion. People

  745. follow passion. They really do. But

  746. there's no mention of zeal or passion in

  747. here. And when I see someone who's super

  748. zealous, I'm like, dude, they're

  749. probably super spiritual. They must be

  750. really mature. Not necessarily. Now, by

  751. the way, I'm for all these things. Sign

  752. me up for the power. Sign me up for the

  753. zeal. Sign me up for the theological

  754. training. Sign me up for gifting. It's

  755. super helpful to do stuff that you're

  756. gifted in. This is not uh these these

  757. things can go together. We can have

  758. character and have these other things.

  759. But I just find this list to be

  760. altogether shocking because it doesn't

  761. possess many of the things that we're

  762. looking for.

  763. So what do the elders do in our context?

  764. Well, they pray.

  765. We give ourselves to prayer. It's the

  766. pattern in all the churches that we

  767. gather together on Wednesday mornings

  768. and we pray. We pray over the church

  769. because ultimately it's not our church.

  770. And so we ask God what he's doing and

  771. ask God how we could serve what he's

  772. doing. The other thing the elders do is

  773. embody the vision and values. So your

  774. church is in trouble if the vision and

  775. values are on the wall but they're not

  776. in the people.

  777. >> That's a problem. So it doesn't matter

  778. what you put on the brochure. Um if the

  779. people of the church and the leaders

  780. specifically don't embody and live that

  781. vision, it's not going to affect exit. I

  782. don't care how much you paid to print

  783. it.

  784. The third thing they do is they guard,

  785. they guide and they govern uh the

  786. church. And that typically happens uh on

  787. a once a month longer Sunday gathering

  788. for most of the churches.

  789. How should elders be selected?

  790. Well, there's about four parties

  791. involved with elder selection in the

  792. scriptures.

  793. The first is God.

  794. God picks elders.

  795. Paul reminds the church in my letters

  796. that it was the Holy Spirit that made

  797. them overseers

  798. and all pastors teachers have been given

  799. by Christ himself.

  800. The other party involved in installing

  801. elders is apostles. On their first

  802. apostolic trip, the apostles Paul and

  803. Barnabas appointed elders in every

  804. church. The Jerusalem apostles did the

  805. same in their region of churches. And

  806. then Paul commisss Titus with that same

  807. authority and says, 'When you go to

  808. churches, install elders. That'll be

  809. really helpful for them.

  810. And then the other piece is other

  811. elders. Timothy probably became an elder

  812. when the company of elders laid hands on

  813. him in 1 Timothy 4. And common sense

  814. would tell us that fellow elders would

  815. have a part in appointing elders because

  816. a huge piece of being on a team is

  817. chemistry on that team. So here's the

  818. five C's that we're normally looking for

  819. when we look for elders. We're looking

  820. for someone who has a sense of call

  821. like this isn't something they've

  822. decided they want to do, but this is

  823. something that God's called them to and

  824. they know that. Then we're looking for

  825. character

  826. that they have the character traits

  827. listed. Then we're looking for a sense

  828. of chemistry like they connect well with

  829. others. Then we're also looking to build

  830. a sense of competency in them. And then

  831. lastly is capacity which might be the

  832. biggest issue is you got to have time.

  833. And time is

  834. hard to come by. Can I get an amen?

  835. >> Amen.

  836. So, we've got an elder track that we do

  837. with all the churches. So, people from

  838. Vicelia, Talleria, and Exiter would hop

  839. into that. And after 18 months of

  840. kicking this around, we want to set Matt

  841. Plumber, Noah Sar, and Ralph Garcia in

  842. front of you guys and say we believe

  843. that these men should lead the way. Now,

  844. when I say that these men should lead,

  845. that doesn't mean that they're the only

  846. ones that lead. In fact, they're tasked

  847. with making sure other people are

  848. released in their giftings. So, please

  849. don't see some kind of two-layered

  850. system where there are elders and

  851. parishioners. That's not it. We actually

  852. feel like in empowering them, it's going

  853. to release the rest of the body to be

  854. equipped for uh ministry. And I just

  855. want to say a few things uh about these

  856. men to you. Is that all right?

  857. This is this is just supposed to be a

  858. glorified announcement that I'm making

  859. right now. [snorts]

  860. But uh my first meeting uh with Matt

  861. Flmer was without Celeste. Actually, the

  862. two of them came to one of our member

  863. meetings. They wanted to know more about

  864. Radiant uh Vicelia. And that was how

  865. long ago, guys?

  866. 2017

  867. >> 2017.

  868. So, we get to the end of the member

  869. meetings and Captain PhD comes to me and

  870. he's got questions, but his questions

  871. aren't like your questions. [laughter]

  872. And he was like, "Well, I heard you say

  873. this. What do you mean by that?" And I'm

  874. like, "Geez." I was like, "This is going

  875. to take a lunch." So Matt and I went to

  876. lunch together because uh well

  877. he knows more than I do about the Bible.

  878. So he's peppering me with questions and

  879. I'm asking him questions and at the end

  880. of that uh he told me, "You know what I

  881. want to do? Um, I want to make the

  882. states money and I want to help kids

  883. with their worldview at a junior

  884. college. And then I want to use the

  885. gifts that God's given me to serve a

  886. local church, a church that can't afford

  887. me. I want the state to pay me to serve

  888. the church.

  889. And I thought, I've got a place for this

  890. guy. I like this guy.

  891. And it's been an unbelievable privilege

  892. to lead with you guys.

  893. really [clears throat] thankful for your

  894. obedience

  895. and your heart for the church and your

  896. heart for exit which won't die even when

  897. you move from exit. So, that's saying

  898. something.

  899. I've loved recently, um, Matt's always

  900. been a bit of a thinker. Um, but more

  901. recently, I've watched him lead in the

  902. things of the spirit. Instead of being

  903. quiet and a thinker, he's getting loud

  904. and demonstrative,

  905. which is exciting to be around, to watch

  906. him lead in those ways. He's often

  907. praying louder uh than I do. Um, but I

  908. commend them to you. um after years of

  909. relationship. Um I think that you guys

  910. are very privileged to have Matt

  911. Celeste.

  912. Uh Noah

  913. is a shepherd in this city

  914. and the most pastoral place I've ever

  915. been is his office

  916. and I commend he and Jacqueline to you.

  917. They came and carved this out even when

  918. it wasn't radiant exit and I wasn't

  919. willing to go. So, the story is null was

  920. like, "I want to plant a church. It's

  921. 2020." And I tell him, "You're on your

  922. own, man. I I don't want to plant a

  923. church right now. It seems like poor

  924. timing." But Noah and Jacqueline came.

  925. And every time I would come, Jacqueline

  926. was doing something new or playing some

  927. new instrument. And I would ask I would

  928. ask null, "Who's leading worship?" And

  929. he's like, "Jacine?" And I was like,

  930. "Really? Like, she leads worship?" She's

  931. like, "She does now." So

  932. I just their their heart for exit and

  933. their heart for people calls them past

  934. their comfort zones and uh commend them

  935. to you. And Ralph and Lucy, I you guys

  936. [laughter]

  937. I I just don't know if you know this,

  938. but you just you hit the jackpot with

  939. these two. Like it's shocking to me. I

  940. I'll watch him do a funeral and I'll

  941. think, you've only been at this for a

  942. year. I'll watch him preach and think,

  943. you've only been preaching for a year?

  944. Like, what is going on here? Um, their

  945. heart to pastor people and care and

  946. their ability to communicate the gospel

  947. clearly, their heart for the outsider

  948. and the insider is just really clear.

  949. And uh, this is a good day. I'm not I'm

  950. not installing elders because this

  951. toddler is in trouble. The future's

  952. bright for this church. Um, and these

  953. are solid men and solid families that

  954. the Lord's called to this church. And I

  955. can see evidence in that and who who's

  956. being drawn uh to this place. These are

  957. guys uh worth following.

  958. They have a huge huge heart for the

  959. church and they have a huge heart for

  960. this uh city and they would be the first

  961. to tell you that that list of character

  962. qualifications is terrifying. I mean

  963. it's very intimidating. Um but they want

  964. to step to it because they believe the

  965. bride of Christ deserves leaders who

  966. look like this. So what I'm going to ask

  967. you to do is you should have received

  968. like playing cards. Um, you should have

  969. gotten a Matt Plumber playing card, a

  970. Noah Sar playing card, and a Ralph

  971. Garcia playing card. If you didn't,

  972. raise your hand and we'll put one in

  973. your uh hand. Aunt Pat needs one.

  974. What do we still have any left or do we

  975. run out?

  976. >> Okay. Yeah. Nice. Ry's got you. Keep

  977. your hand up.

  978. Ralph's going to come and he's going to

  979. do part two of the

  980. um glorified announcement Sunday.

  981. [snorts]

  982. Um but it gives you time to write down.

  983. Now, one of the things you can check is

  984. like, man, this is my first time here

  985. and I have to vote. [laughter]

  986. Like, what are you talking about? I

  987. don't even know these guys. So, you can

  988. just say, I trust you. Um I don't know

  989. these people at all, but you started

  990. crying. It sounds like you're real into

  991. them. So, [laughter]

  992. Good good luck. Um

  993. yeah, but you you know um and I would

  994. just encourage you if you have any

  995. questions or concerns, you can write

  996. those down and I'll be the one following

  997. up with you. So if you're like, well, I

  998. have questions about Ralph. Ralph's not

  999. going to be the one to phone you. So

  1000. [laughter]

1001. that might give you peace of mind.

  1002. You're like, geez, I don't know if I

1003. want to say that. So anyway, the idea is

1004. this. We're not voting here, but there

1005. should be a corporate echo. Like, it

1006. should be true. In fact, some I hope

1007. that most of you are like, I thought

1008. those guys already were elders. Why are

1009. we even doing this? I hope that's the

1010. response of this church. If this is the

1011. first time you've ever thought about

1012. these people in this way, we've done

1013. something wrong. But if you're here

1014. going like, "Duh, like that's it." um

1015. that that's probably the way we want to

1016. go because we want people to do

1017. eldinging long before we call them an

1018. elder if that makes sense. So you can

1019. write down any questions and I'll I'll

1020. collect those uh collect those today.

1021. But again, this is just if we're going

1022. to say that someone needs to be well

1023. thought of by outsiders, then we need to

1024. ask outsiders what they think. So this

1025. is an opportunity for you guys to say it

1026. sounds good to us and to the Holy

1027. Spirit. So I'm going to pray and hand

1028. the mic off to Ralph. Jesus, thank you

1029. like you've really blessed this house.

1030. I thank you for these these men and

  1031. these precious people,

1032. this army that you're raising up in the

  1033. city of Exit.

1034. Thank you for your faithfulness to us.

1035. Thank you for your grace which makes us

1036. who we are. It's not by our own effort

1037. or because we tried harder than the

1038. rest. Lord, your grace found us and we

  1039. are messed up.

1040. And you've given us purpose.

  1041. You've cleansed us. You've given us

1042. chance after chance after chance.

1043. Thank you for your deep commitment,

  1044. Jesus, to your bride.

  1045. It's way beyond ours.

1046. Thank you that you will have a radiant

1047. church without spot, without blemish.

1048. You will succeed in that. And we want to

1049. be a part of helping you get this bride

  1050. ready. Amen. Amen.

1051. >> Thank you, Travis. Thank you so much for

1052. being here this morning. Um,

1053. thank you for that intro to my sermon.

1054. Uh, I'm just kidding. No, I'm not gonna

1055. do that. Not gonna do that to you guys.

1056. Um, yeah, I I I love that. Um, what

1057. Travis talked about uh so it's such an

1058. ancient thing, right? We're reading

1059. about how this was done thousands of

1060. years ago and we're seeing that still

1061. play out in the church today. I think

1062. just speaks to the triedand-rue nature

1063. of God's church that he's still moving.

  1064. He's still speaking and we're still

1065. believing him for how he's going to move

1066. and lead ultimately his bride. And so,

1067. actually, some of what Travis talked

1068. about uh segus into where we're at in

1069. First Corinthians. If you're just

1070. joining us today, uh we are making our

1071. way through the book of First

1072. Corinthians together as a constellation

1073. of churches. Uh as Travis mentioned,

  1074. he's over at Radiant Vicelia. There's a

1075. radiant and we're here in Exit and we're

1076. going together. We believe that the book

1077. of first Corinthians is super relevant

1078. to us today. We you've heard us joke

1079. before it could be easily called first

1080. Californians. There's so much uh

1081. relevancy in this book and where we find

1082. ourselves even in our own state. And so

  1083. we're just going to briefly I'm I'm more

1084. of just going to tee up where we're

1085. going in chapter 5. So we're just going

1086. to touch it today. We'll tackle it next

1087. week. Uh but I think that there are some

1088. things that bleed over from what Travis

1089. talked about. uh where Paul finds

1090. himself in chapter 5. Chapters one

1091. through four has kind of been the leadup

1092. to where he's going and what he's going

1093. to address. And part of what Paul is on

1094. his way to Corenth to do is to lovingly

1095. correct and and administrate some

1096. discipline in the church. And so

1097. chapters five and six have to do with

1098. discipline. And the topic of discipline

1099. can seem like a bummer of a topic for a

1100. sermon. Um but I think you know it's

1101. because of our nature and our

1102. relationship with discipline. I think uh

1103. we tend to shy away from discipline,

1104. right? We want to say what we want to

1105. say. We want to eat what we want to eat.

1106. We we want to go where we want to go and

1107. we kind there's something in us that

1108. kind of just rebelss against discipline.

1109. But just like everything else, the Bible

1110. tends to flip everything on its head.

1111. And the Bible actually makes this

1112. connection between discipline and love.

1113. It's actually directly connected. In

1114. fact, Hebrews 12, uh, I'll put it up on

1115. the screen for you. Actually makes this

1116. connection for us directly. Um, it says

1117. here, "And have you completely forgotten

1118. this word of encouragement that

1119. addresses you as a father addresses his

1120. son?" It says, "My son, do not make

1121. light of the Lord's discipline and do

1122. not lose heart when he rebukes you

1123. because the Lord disciplines the one he

1124. loves and he chasens everyone he accepts

1125. as his son or daughter." And so here we

1126. see this connection between discipline

1127. and love. And Paul has established quite

1128. a few things, but there's one thing

1129. that's super evident when you read the

1130. book of First Corinthians or any of his

1131. books is that he loves the church. He

1132. loves the church. He's like, "Man, I've

1133. poured myself out. Like my back has

1134. scars. My wrists have had chains for the

1135. gospel and ultimately my love for his

  1136. bride. There's nothing I wouldn't do."

1137. And so if if I'm coming to to correct or

1138. to discipline, it's in that same vein.

1139. It's in that same vein of love. And and

1140. we only have to think about our own

1141. lives briefly to recognize the truth in

1142. this. You imagine running our households

1143. with absolutely no discipline. Like

1144. anything went and maybe you had a friend

1145. like that when you're growing up. I did.

1146. It was like, man, this kid had no

1147. bedtime, no curfew, no nothing, you

1148. know? And it's like, man, I want to live

1149. that kid's life, you know. But then you

1150. see, man, the trouble he starts getting

1151. into, you know, and just it it doesn't

1152. end well. It just doesn't end well, you

1153. know. When there's no bedtime,

1154. everyone's sleep suffers. You know, when

1155. there's no restrictions on what you say

1156. in the house, feelings get hurt. If no

1157. one's responsible for doing the dishes,

1158. you're like eating your cereal with a

1159. spatula. It's like, oh, you know, pass

1160. that beaker of water, all the cups are

  1161. dirty. It's like there it there's a

1162. result to that, right? And a lot of

1163. times it's like the the the no

1164. boundaries and the and the what we

1165. describe as freedom uh and no

1166. discipline. It ends up costing other

1167. people and not necessarily us. Other

1168. people suffer when there's no discipline

1169. in the house. And so we we see this this

1170. heart of of Paul saying, "Man, I love

1171. you. There's some things that are going

1172. really wrong, but I need to come and I

1173. need to have a talk with you." you. And

1174. he he ends chapter 4 with this line that

  1175. you've probably heard. I know I heard it

1176. many times in my household. It was,

1177. "Wait till your dad gets home.

  1178. [laughter]

1179. Wait till your dad gets home." That's

1180. when, you know, it's like, "All right,

1181. cross the line." Mom's like, "I'm not

1182. even going to deal with you. Just wait

1183. till your dad gets home." And uh Paul

1184. kind of uh ends chapter 4. He's like,

1185. "I'm on my way to see you, God willing."

1186. And uh I can either bring the rod of

1187. discipline or I can come in a spirit of

1188. love and kindness. And if you have the

1189. Spanish translation Bible, it says, "I

1190. can either come with my chla or I can

1191. come with some aalita hot chocolate."

1192. It's up to you. Nino ninñas. [laughter]

1193. And if you were raised in Hispanic home,

1194. you know about the chla. You know about

1195. the sandal. A mother could be cooking,

1196. remove that thing, and throw it behind

1197. her back and hit like one of the five

1198. kids that needs to get hit with it,

  1199. right? It's amazing. It's it's it's I'm

1200. like, man, did they do they get trained?

1201. I used to like peek in the backyard

1202. sometimes like is there like a a a range

1203. out there where they practice, you know,

1204. because I think it was like boomerang.

1205. It would like dodge other kids and hit

1206. the one kid that needed. It's like

1207. anyways, digressing just a little bit.

1208. But the point is Paul is like, "Hey man,

  1209. I I I can come with discipline or I can

1210. come in love and kindness." And and it's

1211. interesting that he phrases that way

1212. like there's an option. And the option

  1213. is this. He's actually saying, "I

1214. shouldn't have to be coming all this way

1215. to actually address these things."

1216. What's happening is the churches shine

  1217. away. They're they're they're they're

1218. sherking away from their responsibility

1219. to actually be in one another's lives in

1220. a way that sharpens, that calls each

1221. other accountable, that calls each other

1222. higher. He's like, "You guys actually

1223. have the handles for this stuff. Like, I

1224. shouldn't have to be coming all this way

1225. to administer justice. the the church is

1226. refusing to confront some open egregious

1227. unrepentanted sin in the church and it

1228. leads to a couple scandals that break

1229. out in the church and Paul's like it's

1230. gotten to such a level that I'm going to

1231. have to come address this but it got me

1232. thinking about a couple things. It got

1233. me thinking about community in and of

1234. itself. Paul's like, "Man, within the

1235. community of believers, you guys should

1236. be able to handle some of these things."

1237. And it it it got me thinking about my

1238. experiences with community and how

1239. powerful community can really be. My

1240. first experience with community was

1241. right after high school. I've shared

1242. this before. I enlisted in the United

1243. States Army and it was I didn't realize

1244. that I was really applying to be

1245. accepted into a community. And there was

1246. going to be a vetting process. They

1247. weren't just going to let anybody into

1248. this community. You were going to have

1249. to go through a process. And that

1250. process required discipline. It required

1251. shaping and it required forming. And

1252. there were times where uh I wanted to

1253. stop. I wanted to quit. I was like, man,

  1254. I made a really bad choice. I'm only 17.

  1255. Maybe there's a loophole. You know, I'm

  1256. just a kid. I didn't know what I was

1257. doing. You know, but you know what kept

1258. me there actually was the power of

  1259. community. I didn't have the language

1260. for it, but was like, man, I don't want

1261. to leave these guys. I don't want to

1262. leave these guys, man. We've we've gone

1263. through something. We're going through

  1264. something together. We're going

1265. somewhere together. And in that was a

  1266. bond and a community that I didn't want

1267. to be outside of. I was like, man, I'm

1268. going to go through this thing. I'm

1269. going to go through this hard thing. And

1270. it was community that kept us together.

1271. And one of the lessons that I learned

1272. very quickly that would pay dividends

1273. throughout my life. And we're actually

1274. going to see this in the text is that I

1275. learned very quickly that my actions

  1276. affected other people

1277. and and it could directly impact someone

1278. in a pretty grave way. And so to to to

1279. make this lesson uh written in stone in

1280. our minds, the drill instructors or

1281. drill sergeants, they they knew this

1282. that there was a method to their

1283. madness. So they do these things called

1284. integrity checks. So they give you

1285. instructions. They'll tell you what to

1286. do and then they'll check to see if you

1287. actually did it. And so one of the

1288. things was going on this uh rucksack

1289. march and they gave you the packing

1290. list. Hey, you put all these things in

1291. your rucks sack. Sounds pretty simple,

1292. right? And so we're going out the door

1293. and they're doing an integrity check.

1294. And what the integrity check was is one

1295. of the drill sergeants would hit the

1296. bottom of your ruck to make sure it had

1297. some weight in it. It shouldn't move

1298. very much. There was guy about three or

1299. four ahead of me hit that ruck sack.

1300. That thing went flying up in the air,

1301. snatched him out of line. He had two

1302. pillows stuck stuck in his rug sack.

1303. It's like, "Okay, we want to cheat. Bad

1304. day for you guys. Everyone get out onto

1305. the grinder." So, it's it's like the the

1306. cement that we um line up on. So, empty

1307. out your bags in front of your uh wall

1308. lockers on the third floor. So, you go

1309. up, empty your contents, you come back

1310. down, they have the packing list. Okay,

1311. we're going to go one by one. We're

1312. going to make sure everyone has

1313. everything in their bag. So, run up to

1314. the third floor and grab one sock.

1315. Okay? You run up and you grab the one

1316. sock. Okay? Now, go get the other one.

1317. And we did that until the rock sack was

1318. full. But here's the thing. Everyone

  1319. participated except the offender.

1320. He got to sit and watch in the shade.

1321. That guy was begging to go. No, please

1322. let me go. Let me go. But he we were

1323. being taught a lesson. what you do, how

1324. you act in community affects other

1325. people. It affects other people. And

1326. that's what Paul is kind of saying here.

1327. He's like, man, you've this this sexual

1328. scandal that that even the pagans don't

1329. approve of. They won't even tolerate the

1330. type of things that are going on in

1331. God's church. You have tolerated these

1332. things and it's affecting other people.

1333. And he and he quotes Jesus when he says,

1334. "A little bit of yeast is going to work

1335. through the whole batch of dough." And

1336. this shouldn't be and this word

1337. tolerating I think man what a relevant

1338. word for us today in the spirit of

  1339. tolerance

1340. right the Jesus said at one point in the

1341. future like people are going to call

1342. what's good evil and what's evil good

1343. and tolerance can sound like a good word

1344. and it is a good word but but our

1345. culture wants to shift it in such a way

1346. to say that you must tolerate everything

1347. If you don't tolerate everything and

1348. everyone's variation of truth, then

  1349. you're intolerant

1350. and that's actually evil. And so they

1351. flipped this whole thing. And guys, this

1352. is such a temptation for the church. It

1353. was in Corenth and it is today in

  1354. California.

1355. And if we don't go back to the

1356. scriptures, if we don't stand on the

1357. word of God, if we don't have the heart

1358. of Paul here, Paul is like tolerance

1359. whatever culture mildly interesting. I

1360. know one thing. Christ crucified.

1361. I know that one thing. And we touched on

1362. that last week. That is the driving

  1363. motive. He's like, I don't know what

1364. your truth is. I know what the truth is.

1365. And I'm not going to affirm or coddle or

1366. tolerate your view if it opposes the

1367. word of God. I just won't do it. I'm

1368. going to I'm going to I'm going to

1369. separate my love or I'm going to hate

1370. the sin and not the sinner. He's very

1371. clear on that. He's going to say, "Hey,

1372. this doesn't mean that we don't um love

1373. anyone in the world, that we don't uh go

1374. into like we would have to leave this

1375. world." He says, "If we're going to

1376. really like just eradicate ourselves

1377. from sin, that's not what he's saying.

1378. What he's saying inside the church, the

1379. bride of Christ should reflect his

1380. glory." And when there's unrepentant

1381. sin, unchallenged sin by brothers and

  1382. sisters,

  1383. it weakens our testimony.

1384. It weakens our testimony. And it

1385. ultimately is not loving or kind to one

  1386. another.

1387. It's not loving or kind to tolerate sin

  1388. in the church.

1389. It's it's not easy to do. It's easier to

1390. go, I don't want to deal with that

1391. person. I'll let someone else deal with

1392. it. I'm just going to overlook this

1393. thing. I don't want to have that

1394. conversation. I'm going to pass that

1395. buck to someone else. Maybe one of the

1396. leaders will handle it. And that's what

1397. happens here in 1 Corinthians chapter 5.

    1 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

1398. It has been passed on and passed on and

1399. unchallenged and unchallenged and has

1400. festered and grown to a stain on the

1401. church of God. And so

1402. Paul here is on his way

1403. and he's and he's believing that his

1404. trip that he's going to be able to come

  1405. and remind the church

1406. of the truth. He's going to be able to

1407. call back to mind, hey, this is the rock

1408. on which we stand. This is how we go

  1409. together.

1410. And we do have the handles for this.

1411. We have uh we have the word of God to

1412. help us in this area. And I want to

1413. point our attention here to exactly

1414. where this comes from because I'm not

1415. saying that we should come up with our

1416. own wisdom, that we should give our own

1417. advice. We don't have to make something

1418. up. We actually have the word of God to

1419. guide us. And what's interesting about

1420. the Bible is it actually makes a claim

1421. about itself, which is really cool. It's

  1422. in 2 Timothy 3:16.

    2 Timothy 3:16

1423. 2 Timothy 3:16, you can write it down in

    2 Timothy 3:16

1424. your notes. I'll read it to you here. It

1425. says, "All scripture is God breathed

1426. and is useful for teaching, rebuking,

  1427. correcting, and training in

1428. righteousness, so that the servant of

1429. God may be thoroughly equipped for every

  1430. good work."

1431. I'm so grateful this morning for the

  1432. word of God

1433. that it does all of these things. We

1434. don't have to come up with this on our

1435. own. It will correct us. It will rebuke

1436. us. It will train us. It will transform

1437. our hearts if we press into it and we

1438. allow it to do what it was intended to

  1439. do.

  1440. And so

1441. I am excited about tackling chapters

1442. five and six because I realize the

1443. strength and the importance and the

1444. fruit that comes from what Paul's

1445. getting ready to talk about. And so I

1446. just wanted to to to start start your

1447. mind thinking and wrapping around this.

1448. And I would ask you to do a little bit

1449. of homework before we meet next week is

1450. to read chapters five and six. Read it

1451. ahead of time. Read it a couple times.

1452. Maybe choose another translation. If you

1453. want to go a little step further, start

1454. journaling maybe some thoughts about it.

1455. Because guys, this is so crucial. Moving

1456. forward, c we we've just celebrated, you

1457. know, one year of being together and all

1458. that God is doing. moving forward is

1459. going to require us to stay together, to

  1460. go together,

1461. to love one another, to be our brothers

1462. and sisters keeper. And a part of that

1463. Paul's going to give us the handles for

1464. as we go into five and six.

1465. And so I just want to close. I think it

1466. was actually mentioned earlier this

1467. morning is that if you feel like you've

1468. kind of missed the mark in this or maybe

  1469. you've been outside of a spiritual

1470. community and you're just kind of

1471. waiting your way in or maybe you you

1472. were and you left. As I was reading

1473. through these passages, I was reminded

1474. of the parable of the prodigal son.

1475. And there's this point where, you know,

1476. he he wants his inheritance upfront and

1477. he takes it and he squanders it. So he

1478. was in community. He was in in his f

1479. within the confines and the protection

1480. of his family. And then he's outside of

  1481. that. And and here's what's interesting

1482. is like the church that in in Corinth

1483. and and what Paul's addressing was like

1484. the the only church in the area. There

1485. wasn't like churches on every corner

1486. where you could go church hop. So being

1487. outside of the church meant you were

1488. within the realm in in in the dominion

  1489. of Satan.

1490. >> It was dark out there. Like you could

1491. get spiritually hurt and killed. There

1492. were there were thieves ready to take

1493. what was yours. And so when the prodigal

1494. son is outside the the covering of his

1495. family and in the safety of that, man,

1496. he he is he he gets his butt kicked out

1497. there. He really does. At some point,

1498. he's he's eating cow patties, right? And

  1499. he's like, "Man, even my father's

1500. servants eat better than he's hit rock

1501. bottom, so they speak so to speak. He's

1502. hit rock bottom. And when he comes back,

1503. he's coming back." And the Bible says

1504. that that the father saw him from a

  1505. distance

1506. and that he already had preparations for

  1507. the son.

1508. He had a ring. He had a robe. He had

1509. sandals for his feet. He had a fattened

1510. calf ready to celebrate. So I just want

1511. to say as we start talking about

1512. community, like wherever you find

1513. yourselves on that spectrum, you feel

1514. like, man, I was there and I left. I've

1515. never really been apart or I'm in it. I

  1516. just don't know where I'm at, man. I I

1517. just want to I just want to speak over

1518. you. The truth of God is that he is

1519. calling you into community with fellow

1520. believers, fellow brothers and sisters

1521. in Christ. And he has preparations for

1522. you. No matter where you're at in that

1523. journey, no matter where you're at in

1524. that context, there is preparation for

1525. you in his family. And we're excited to

1526. go together with you guys. There is a

1527. real power in going together. Community

1528. comes with two things. Reward and

  1529. responsibility.

  1530. There's a reward in in community. That's

  1531. being together. That's, hey, I'll pray

1532. with you. I'll walk that mile with you.

1533. Or I'll just sit with you in this.

1534. That's the reward. The responsibility is

  1535. to one another.

1536. The responsibility is that man, I need

1537. to take accountability for my life so

1538. that my yeast doesn't work into the

1539. dough. And we put that before the cross

1540. and he shapes that. and he transforms

  1541. that.

1542. And so, one of the things that we do

1543. together as a family is we take

  1544. communion together.

1545. And we've prepared a table for you guys.

1546. We're going to wind down our time

1547. together this morning. And like I said,

1548. we'll we'll deep dive chapters five and

1549. six next week. But I just wanted to

1550. start kicking some things around in your

1551. mind. Worship team, prayer team, you can

  1552. you can join me

1553. as we approach the table this morning.

1554. I feel like and and I've mentioned this

1555. a little bit before, but I I feel like

1556. one of the things that I want to grow in

1557. um as I lead our gatherings here is just

1558. approaching the table with reverence

1559. and just just a holy awe of what we're

  1560. about to do represents.

1561. Like there's no the thing about the

1562. military is that the community was kind

1563. of the reward at the end of the day.

1564. like you got to wear the uniform, you

1565. got to fly the flag on your soul on on

1566. your shoulder. But being a part of

1567. community was the reward and that can be

  1568. idolized.

1569. But the thing about the kingdom of God

1570. is that Christ is our reward. [music]

1571. He is actually the reward is to be with

1572. him. To have right relationship with him

1573. is the reward. The community is the

1574. byproduct of that. So we don't want to

1575. divorce the two. We can't say I want all

1576. the benefits of community. I want

  1577. covering. I want fellowship. I want

1578. prayer. But I I'm not in obedience to

1579. God. I'm not walking in obedience to the

  1580. father. There's no reverence. There's no

1581. holy awe and wonder of what God's doing.

1582. We can't divorce the two.

1583. The cross must be first.

1584. It must be the first thing. So when we

1585. approach the communion table, as much as

1586. we love community, as much as there is

1587. reward in community, let us remember the

1588. first thing which is the cross of

1589. Christ, him crucified, that he would

1590. take our place, that he would take my

  1591. place,

1592. a substitution for the wrath and the

  1593. judgment that I deserved.

1594. And then once that was complete, he

1595. gifts us with the gift and the reward of

1596. community which is his church.

1597. As we approach the bread broken

1598. that represents [music] his body broken

1599. for us, may we call that to mind aresh

1600. and say, Lord, you are the first thing.

1601. You are the first reward in my life is

  1602. you.

1603. As we take up the juice that represents

1604. his blood poured out for us, we remember

1605. [music] that he willingly laid down his

1606. life. It wasn't taken from him.

1607. And he didn't he didn't just walt up to

  1608. the cross

1609. and he he got on his knees and on his

1610. face in the garden [music] and he pled

1611. with God, "Is there another way?

  1612. Is there another way?"

1613. And God said, [music] "No, there's not."

1614. He said, "Then your will be done, not

1615. mine." And he went to that cross

1616. willingly. He could have called down

  1617. 10,000 angels.

1618. But the joy set before him was seeing us

1619. freed to seeing [music] death and sin

1620. placed under his feet. That was the joy

1621. and he persevered for it. So may we

1622. approach this table, brothers and

1623. sisters, with a reverence for who that

1624. is and and what he is in our life. And

1625. if and if that is not your relationship

1626. with him yet, and I don't say this to

1627. shame you or to count you out,

1628. but I I would say to not approach the

  1629. table [music] yet

1630. says if we do that, if we don't soberly

1631. examine, we we bring judgment on

  1632. ourselves.

1633. And so we want to approach again in

1634. reverence and awe. And if that's not

1635. where you're at today, man, we would

1636. love to come alongside you and walk you

  1637. to that table.

1638. Yeah, this room is filled with people

1639. who would love to come alongside you

1640. today. Come and get prayer. Come and

1641. have a conversation with me. We'd love

1642. to do that. Let me pray for you. God,

1643. [music] we thank you for this morning.

1644. We thank you that this is not our idea.

1645. That we didn't conjure this up so we

1646. don't have to maintain it. We don't have

1647. to keep it [music] running. Holy Spirit,

1648. you are the one who empowers your

1649. church. You are the one who inhabits the

  1650. praise of your people.

1651. So we pray this morning, God, that the

1652. praise from our lips that these

1653. declarations of truth have made their

1654. way before your throne. And we thank

1655. you, Jesus, for going to the cross.

1656. We thank you for your sacrifice that has

1657. set us free. We thank you for the

  1658. discipline

1659. that comes through community that is

  1660. love for one another.

1661. Would you lead us in that way? Would you

  1662. lead us

1663. to the cross over and over again

1664. as the word has gone out about

1665. installing elders and leading forward?

1666. Yeah, I just I agree with Travis. would

1667. we not see that as a separation but as a

  1668. unifying [music]

1669. word and a covering that we would go

  1670. together.

1671. Yeah. Lord, we thank you for this

1672. morning. I bless every heart under the

1673. sound of my voice that we would be

1674. called more [music] and more into your

1675. likeness today. God, we want to be just

1676. a little more like you.

1677. We love you, God. We bless you with the

1678. affections of our heart in Jesus mighty

  1679. and precious name.

  1680. Amen.

1681. >> I'm lifting both of my hands

1682. cuz you gave me chance after chance

  1683. after chance.

  1684. And I

1685. I'm giving all [singing and music] that

  1686. I am

1687. cuz you gave me chance after chance

  1688. after chance.

  1689. And I

1690. I'm lifting both of my hands

1691. cuz you gave me chance [music] after

  1692. chance

  1693. after chance.

  1694. And

1695. I'll give you all [singing] that I am.

1696. Cuz you gave me chance after chance

  1697. [music]

  1698. after chance.

  1699. And

1700. I'm lifting both of [music] my hands

  1702. after chance.

1703. I'm giving all that I am cuz you gave me

1704. chance after chance after chance. Who am

  1705. I? [singing]

1706. Who am I that you keep me?

1707. [music and singing] Oh, you're my God.

1708. I'm just grateful for you.

1709. God, I'm just grateful for you.

1710. And all my life you've been right here

1711. by my side. God, I'm just grateful for

  1712. you.

1713. God, I'm just grateful for you. Who am

1714. I? Sing, [singing] who am I that you

1715. keep me on your mind, God? I'm just

1716. grateful [music and singing] for you,

1717. God. I'm just grateful for you all my

1718. life. Oh my life. You've

1719. [music and singing] been right here by

1720. my side. God, I'm just grateful for you.

1721. God, I'm [music] just grateful for you.

  1722. Lifting [singing] both. Tonight

  1723. I

1724. I'm lifting both of my hands

1725. cuz you gave [music] me chance after

1726. chance after chance. Yeah. [singing]

1727. And I'm [singing] giving all that I am

1728. cuz you gave me chance [music] after

  1729. chance. Oh,

  1730. and

1731. I've lifted both of [music] my hands

1732. cuz you gave me chance after [singing]

  1733. chance after chance.

1734. I'm giving all that I am cuz you gave me

1735. chance [music and singing] after chance

1736. after chance. Who am I? Who am I that

1737. you keep me on? You're my

1738. [music and singing] God, I'm just

  1739. grateful for you.

1740. God, I'm just grateful for you. All my

1741. life and all [singing] my life, you've

1742. been right here by my side. God, I'm

  1743. just grateful for you.

1744. God, I'm just grateful. Who am I? Sing

1745. it out. [singing] Who am I that you keep

1746. me [music] on your mind? God, I'm just

  1747. grateful for you.

1748. God, I'm just grateful for you.

1749. [singing] All my life and all my life,

1750. you've been right here by my side. God,

1751. I'm just grateful for you.

1752. God, I'm just grateful for [singing]

1753. you. God, I'm just grateful for you.

1754. God, I'm just grateful for you.

1755. God, I'm just grateful for you. God, I'm

1756. just grateful for you, [singing]

  1757. [music]

  1758. Jesus. This morning

1759. we remind ourselves today that

1760. everything that's happening in our lives

1761. and everything that's happening in this

1762. church is built on you and you alone,

1763. Jesus. It's not built on elders. It's

1764. not built on good worship teams. It's

1765. not built on good programs. It's built

  1766. on the rock,

1767. >> Jesus Christ. And it's fueled by the

1768. finished work of your cross today. Thank

1769. you, God, for keeping our eyes engaged

1770. on you and you alone. God doesn't

1771. dismiss the giftings that you've put in

1772. this church. And we thank you that there

1773. are gifts from the front to the back in

1774. this church. Everybody in this room

1775. filled with the Holy Spirit, you have a

  1776. place here.

1777. >> You have gifts that God has deposited in

1778. you. And Lord, we call them out of each

1779. other as community today. And we hold

1780. each other accountable not only to the

1781. things Lord that we're not doing but to

1782. the things that we should be walking in.

1783. The giftings of God in our lives are a

1784. gift. And we keep an eye on each other

1785. in this church. And we're going to say,

1786. "Hey, I see this in you." Sorry, I feel

1787. like I'm just prophesying a little bit

1788. here that there is there are gifts that

1789. are need to be awakened in the hearts.

1790. >> And for those in the in the quote

1791. unquote back of the church, there are

1792. giftings that God has put in you. and we

  1793. call them forth. Yeah.

1794. >> In the name of Jesus Christ and we say,

1795. "Holy Spirit, breathe on and bring alive

1796. the giftings in this church from the

1797. front to the back. Don't count yourself

1798. out. You have giftings in Christ." So,

1799. Holy Spirit, awaken those things in us

1800. this morning. And again, it all comes

1801. back to the one who it was began by, and

1802. that's you, Jesus. When you finished the

1803. work on the cross, we love you. You are

1804. the alpha and the omega, the beginning

1805. and the end. And we love you this

1806. morning in Jesus name. Ralph, you got

  1807. something?

1808. >> Amen. Yeah. Bless you as you go. Thank

1809. you for being with us. Uh the papers if

1810. you have if you want to hand those off,

1811. Tiffany and Travis will be in the back

1812. there where he has a basket in his hand.

1813. You can drop those off right there. But

1814. bless you guys as you go. We love you.

1815. We'll see you next time.

  1816. >> Thanks you guys.
