  8. keep these Bible Stories going. Ask most people what the

  9. mark of the beast is, and the answer comes back fast.

  10. Something scanned, something implanted, something that will one day stop

  11. a person at a checkout counter and decide whether they

  12. eat this week. Underneath that answer sits a fear, and

  13. it is the reason this chapter keeps sincere people awake

  14. at night. If the mark is a device, then it

  15. can be done to you. Someone could press it into

  16. your skin while you slept, or slip it into a

  17. card in your wallet, and you would belong to the

  18. wrong side without ever choosing it. Believers have spent years

  19. wondering whether they already took it and simply do not know.

  20. So open Revelation 13 and count. The chapter runs 18 verses.

  21. The mark appears in three of them, and all three

  22. sit at the very end. Fifteen verses go by before

  23. John ever mentions a hand or a forehead, and not

  24. one of them is about technology. They are about worship.

  25. who is being bowed to, who is being copied, and

  26. what a crowd does to the person still standing when

  27. everyone else has knelt. By the time the mark arrives,

  28. the bowing has already happened. The mark is what gets

  29. handed to a person afterward. Revelation never tells us what

  30. the mark is made of, not once in the whole chapter.

  31. It tells us whose it is, and it does that

  32. with a single word that every reader in the first

  33. century recognized on sight. It is not a word about

  34. materials at all. There is one more thing, and it

  35. is why this chapter has been misread for so long.

  36. Revelation had already put a mark on people well before

  37. chapter 13. It happens earlier in the book, in a

  38. passage most readers pass straight over, and once you find it,

  39. the beast's mark stops looking like an invention and starts

  40. looking like a forgery. We will get there. Let us

  41. read the chapter the way John wrote it, from the

  42. first line. Chapter 13 does not begin a new subject.

  43. It finishes one. The chapter before it ends with a

  44. dragon at war. He has already been thrown out of heaven.

  45. He has already failed to destroy the child he was hunting.

  46. Now he turns on everyone else who belongs to God,

  47. and the last thing John shows us is the dragon

  48. walking down to the shore and standing on the sand

  49. of the sea. Then the next verse opens, and something

  50. comes up out of the water. That is one scene,

  51. not two. Whatever rises from the sea rises because the

  52. dragon is standing there waiting for it. This is the

  53. frame John gives us before a single detail is described,

  54. and it decides how everything else should be read. The

  55. beast is not a rival power that happens to appear.

  56. He is the dragon's instrument called up in front of him.

  57. Most people know this first beast by another name. They

  58. call him the Antichrist, and that name fits what John

  59. is describing, though it is worth knowing that Revelation never

  60. once uses the word. John only ever writes it in

  61. his letters, and there he uses it for something much

  62. closer to home. John describes what he sees, ten horns,

  63. seven heads, the body of a leopard, the feet of

  64. a bear, the mouth of a lion. Those are not

  65. random animals. Centuries earlier, Daniel had seen four beasts come

  66. up out of a churning sea, and they were a lion,

  67. a bear, a leopard, and a fourth creature too terrible

  68. to name, with ten horns. John sees all of them

  69. fused into one body. Every empire that ever crushed God's

  70. people gathered into a single animal standing on the beach.

  71. Then comes a phrase that repeats through the whole chapter,

  72. and it is easy to read past. A mouth speaking

  73. great things and blasphemy was given to him. Authority for

  74. the forty-two months of the great tribulation was given to him.

  75. Authority over every tribe and people and language and nation

  76. was given to him. Given. Four times John writes the

  77. beast's power as something handed over rather than something seized.

  78. So this creature that looks unstoppable is operating on permission.

  79. He has time because it was measured out to him,

  80. 42 months and no more. Nothing in the chapter suggests

  81. he took any of it by force from a God

  82. who could not stop him. That is the flaw under

  83. everything that follows. The beast is terrifying, and he is

  84. also on a leash, and John tells us so before

  85. he tells us anything else. Then John notices something about

  86. one of the heads. One of his heads looked like

  87. it had been wounded fatally. His fatal wound was healed,

  88. and the whole earth marveled at the beast. Revelation 13.3

  89. A death blow. a body that should be finished. And

  90. then it is not finished, and the whole world stops

  91. and stares. We have heard this before. It is the

  92. shape of the gospel told by the wrong mouth. The

  93. beast's entire claim on the world rests on a story

  94. he borrowed, and it works. John says the whole earth marveled,

  95. and then that they worshipped the dragon because he had

  96. given his authority to the beast, and they worshipped the

  97. beast too. Notice where the worship goes first. To the dragon.

  98. The beast is the public face, but the bowing runs

  99. past him to the one standing on the sand. People

  100. who worship the beast are worshipping something behind the beast,

  101. whether they know it or not. That is what makes

  102. it a deception rather than an announcement. And notice what

  103. is missing from this scene. Nobody is being forced yet.

  104. Nobody has been marked. There is no threat in these

  105. verses at all. The world worships because it is impressed,

  106. and a healed wound was enough. That is how the

  107. whole thing begins. The pressure comes later, and it comes

  108. to the ones who did not join in while everyone

  109. else was still amazed. Halfway through the chapter, John looks

  110. away from the sea and sees a second creature. I

  111. saw another beast coming up out of the earth. He

  112. had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke like

  113. a dragon. Revelation chapter 13 verse 11. Two horns like

    Revelation 13:11

  114. a lamb. That is the most frightening sentence in the chapter,

  115. and it does not sound frightening at all. That is

  116. the point of it. The first beast is obviously monstrous.

  117. Seven heads, a lion's mouth, a bear's feet. You would

  118. run from it in the street. The second beast looks

  119. like a young sheep. Small horns, no threat, nothing to

  120. be afraid of. And then it opens its mouth and

  121. the dragon's voice comes out. Earlier in Revelation, John had

  122. already seen a lamb, and that lamb had seven horns,

  123. because seven is the number of fullness in this book.

  124. This second creature has two. It is a poor imitation,

  125. and it does not need to be a good one.

  126. It only needs to look harmless long enough for people

  127. to listen. A copy that fools you does not have

  128. to be impressive. It has to be familiar. Revelation comes

  129. back to this creature three more times before the book ends,

  130. and every time it uses a different name for him.

  131. It calls him the false prophet. What does this creature do?

  132. He does not build his own kingdom. He points at

  133. the first beast and makes the earth worship him. That

  134. is his entire job. He works signs, John says, real

  135. enough to hold a crowd, even calling fire down out

  136. of the sky in front of everyone. Fire from heaven

  137. has a history. It fell on Elijah's altar in front

  138. of a nation that had forgotten who God was, and

  139. it settled the question that day. So when the second

  140. beast calls fire down, he is reenacting a moment God's

  141. people already trust, and using it to point the crowd

  142. somewhere else. Each of these is something holy, wearing a mask.

  143. Nothing in this chapter tries to make evil attractive on

  144. its own terms. It all works by looking like something good.

  145. Then the second beast tells the world to make something.

  146. An image of the first beast, a statue, an object,

  147. a likeness that people can gather around. And John says

  148. something is given to that image using the same word

  149. he has been using all along. Breath. The image is

  150. given breath, and it speaks. and the order goes out

  151. that anyone who will not worship it should be killed.

  152. An image that breathes is the boldest copy in the sequence.

  153. In Genesis, God formed a body from the dust and

  154. breathed into it, and the man became living. What God

  155. did in a garden, the dragon servant now does with

  156. a statue, and the world falls down in front of it.

  157. This is also the moment the mood of the chapter changes.

  158. Up to here, people worshipped because they were amazed. Now

  159. there is a penalty for standing still. The crowd that

  160. was impressed becomes a crowd that is watching who does

  161. not bow. And once a room is watching, a person

  162. does not need a law to feel the pressure. They

  163. just need to notice that they are the only one

  164. still standing. Hold on to this, because everything after it

  165. depends on it. The order to worship comes before the mark,

  166. and so does the killing. The whole system of allegiance

  167. is already running, fully public, before a single hand or

  168. forehead is touched. So by the time we finally reach

  169. the verses everyone quotes, the question has already been settled

  170. for every person in the chapter. The mark does not

  171. decide anything. It records what was decided. Now we come

  172. to the three verses at the end. He causes all,

  173. the small and the great, the rich and the poor,

  174. and the free and the slave, to be given marks

  175. on their right hands or on their foreheads. Revelation chapter

    Revelation 13:16

  176. 13 verse 16. Look at how carefully John spreads that out.

  177. Small and great, rich and poor, free and slave. He

  178. is closing every door a person might hope to slip through.

  179. Whatever this is, it reaches the palace and the field,

  180. then the pressure. No one would be able to buy

  181. or to sell unless he has that mark, the name

  182. of the beast, or the number of his name. Revelation

    Revelation 13:17

  183. chapter 13 verse 17 That sentence has frightened people for

  184. two thousand years, and it should. Buying and selling is

  185. not a luxury. It is bread. It is medicine. It

  186. is rent. Cut a person out of the market, and

  187. you have not argued with them. You have made living

  188. hard enough that most people stop refusing. But read the

  189. second half of that verse again, because it carries the definition,

  190. and almost nobody stops on it. The mark is the

  191. name of the beast or the number of his name.

  192. A name, that is what the mark is. Revelation defines

  193. it by whose name is on it and says nothing

  194. at all about what it is made of. And the

  195. word John chose for mark makes that unmistakable to his

  196. first readers. In everyday Greek, that word meant the official

  197. stamp pressed into a document to show it was authorized.

  198. It meant the image struck onto a coin to show

  199. whose face and whose empire stood behind it. And it

  200. meant the brand put on a slave, so that anyone

  201. who saw him would know who owned him. It is

  202. ownership language, top to bottom. So the chapter is not

  203. asking us to identify a product. It is telling us

  204. that people end up carrying the name of the one

  205. they belong to, in a place where everyone can see it.

  206. Which raises the question almost nobody asks. Why the hand

  207. and the forehead? Of all the places on a human body,

  208. why those two? It is one of the most familiar

  209. commands in the Old Testament, and every Jewish reader of

  210. Revelation would have heard it the instant John named those

  211. two places. You shall bind them for a sign on

  212. your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.

  213. Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 8. That comes from the passage

    Deuteronomy 6:8

  214. Israel recited every morning and every evening. Love the Lord

  215. your God with all your heart. Teach these words to

  216. your children. Talk about them when you sit at home

  217. and when you walk down the road. And then bind

  218. them on your hand and set them between your eyes.

  219. Jewish families took that seriously enough to make it physical.

  220. They wrote the words of God on small pieces of parchment,

  221. put them in little boxes, and strapped them to the

  222. hand and to the forehead when they prayed. Not because

  223. leather boxes are holy, but because the two places mean something.

  224. The hand is what you do, your work, your money,

  225. your choices, the things you reach for. The forehead is

  226. what you think, your beliefs, your loyalty, the things sitting

  227. behind your eyes shaping how you see everything else. Together

  228. they mean all of you. The command was about a

  229. life where God's words govern both the hands and the head,

  230. so that what you believe and what you do are

  231. the same thing. Now go back to Revelation 13. The

  232. beast marks the hand and the forehead. He is quoting

  233. Scripture at us. Everything God asked of Israel, the beast

  234. now demands for himself in the same two places, using

  235. the same picture. Your work and your loyalty, your hands

  236. and your mind, all of you. That is why the

  237. mark has always been about worship. It is stamped on

  238. the exact spots where devotion was supposed to live. So

  239. what about the card in your wallet? What about a

  240. world closing its cash registers and an identity number attached

  241. to everything you buy? Here is the honest answer from

  242. the chapter. Revelation describes a system where refusing to worship

  243. costs you the ability to eat, and any age that

  244. can shut a person out of the market has the

  245. machinery for that. The concern is not foolish. But the

  246. chapter puts the mark at the end of a road

  247. that begins with worship, and it never once describes a device.

  248. A payment system can make refusing expensive. It cannot make

  249. you bow. What John warns about is what a person

  250. gives their loyalty to when refusing finally costs them something,

  251. and no card in a wallet has ever decided that

  252. for anyone. And this is where the fear people carry

  253. begins to loosen. If the mark were a technology, it

  254. could be applied to a sleeping man. But a stamp

  255. on the hand and the forehead, in the language the

  256. Bible has already given us, is a picture of a

  257. person's whole life pointed in one direction. That is not

  258. something anyone can do to you while you are not looking.

  259. It is built out of the hundred small decisions a

  260. person makes when the room has gone silent and everyone

  261. is waiting to see whether they will kneel. Then the

  262. chapter ends on a riddle that has swallowed more Christian

  263. energy than almost any verse in the Bible. Here is wisdom.

  264. He who has understanding, let him calculate the number of

  265. the beast, for it is the number of a man.

  266. Revelation chapter 13 verse 18. And then the number 666.

    Revelation 13:18

  267. Two things in that verse are worth slowing down for,

  268. and neither of them is the number itself. The first

  269. is the word calculate. That was not a strange invitation

  270. in the first century. In both Hebrew and Greek, letters

  271. doubled as numerals, so every name a person could write

  272. also added up to a figure. People played with this constantly.

  273. Someone scratched a line into a wall in Pompeii that reads,

  274. in effect, I love the girl whose number is 545.

  275. So when John says, calculate, his readers knew exactly what

  276. kind of puzzle they were being handed. The second is

  277. the phrase that follows. It is the number of a man,

  278. a man. Whatever John is pointing at here comes down

  279. in the end to a single person, not to a

  280. nation or a system of trade. And there is something

  281. in the number itself that the ancient reader would have

  282. felt straight away. Seven is the number of completion in Revelation.

  283. Seven churches, seven seals, seven trumpets, seven horns on the Lamb.

  284. Six is one short. Six is the number of the

  285. creature who was made on the sixth day and who

  286. was never meant to stand alone. 666 is that failure,

  287. three times over, a man trying to be seven and

  288. coming up six no matter how many times he tries.

  289. Christians have spent centuries trying to solve the name, and

  290. I understand the pull. But watch what the chapter does

  291. right at this point. It says, here is wisdom, and

  292. then it closes without telling us the answer. And in

  293. the very next chapter, when John describes the people who

  294. came through all of this without bowing, he says nothing

  295. about their skill at arithmetic. which is the strongest hint

  296. in the chapter that the hunt is not the assignment.

  297. Now for the thing we left waiting at the beginning.

  298. Six chapters before any of this, John saw four angels

  299. holding back the winds so that nothing could happen. be harmed.

  300. And then another angel came up from the east, carrying

  301. a seal, and shouted at them to wait. Don't harm

  302. the earth, neither the sea nor the trees, until we

  303. have sealed the bondservants of our God on their foreheads,

  304. Revelation chapter 7 verse 3. Put that beside chapter 13,

    Revelation 7:3

  305. and the whole shape of the thing turns over. God

  306. marks his people on the forehead, and he does it first,

  307. before the storm arrives, before the beast rises, before anyone

  308. is asked to bow to anything. The marking is so

  309. important that the judgment of the whole earth is held

  310. up until it is finished. So when the beast stamps

  311. foreheads in chapter 13, he is doing what he has

  312. done all along. The healed wound, the lamb's horns, the

  313. image with breath in it, and now the mark, each

  314. one made in the image of something that was already God's.

  315. And the order is what matters. God sealed his people first,

  316. and the beast produced the forgery afterward. And the picture

  317. does not stop there. As soon as chapter 13 ends

  318. on that number, chapter 14 opens on a hillside. John

  319. looks and sees the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and

  320. standing with him is a great crowd of people, and

  321. they have a name written on their foreheads. It is

  322. the name of the Lamb and the name of his Father.

  323. Two chapters, side by side, and the same body part

  324. in both. One crowd carrying the name of a beast,

  325. another crowd carrying the name of God. John has arranged

  326. the whole thing so that we cannot miss it. Which

  327. brings us to the fear I mentioned at the start,

  328. the one that keeps sincere believers awake. Could I take

  329. it without knowing? Could it already be on me? Revelation

  330. 13 answers that, though the answer sits in a verse,

  331. people rarely connect to it. Right in the middle of

  332. the chapter, describing the crowd that worships the beast, John

  333. writes this, All who dwell on the earth will worship him,

  334. everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation

  335. of the world in the book of life. Revelation chapter

    Revelation 13:8

  336. 13 verse 8 There is a book, and there are

  337. names in it, and those names were written before the

  338. world had a foundation under it. Look at what that

  339. does to the timeline. The beast is late, terribly, hopelessly late.

  340. He arrives to a world where the naming has already

  341. been done, in a book that was open before the

  342. first day of creation, and nothing he stamps on a

  343. hand can reach back and cross out what is written there.

  344. He can pressure a market and empty a bank account.

  345. He cannot get into that book. And put that beside

  346. everything the chapter has already shown us. The mark comes

  347. after the worship every single time. Nobody in Revelation 13

  348. is marked by accident or in their sleep or by

  349. touching the wrong thing at a market stall. They are

  350. amazed first, then they bow, and the mark is what

  351. the crowd gives them afterward. A person who is frightened

  352. of taking the mark is a person who does not

  353. want to belong to the beast. That fear itself is

  354. evidence of where their loyalty already sits. The people in

  355. this chapter who receive the mark are not afraid of it.

  356. They want it. It is their ticket into a world

  357. they have already decided to be part of. Revelation does

  358. say what follows for those who take it. One chapter later,

  359. an angel flies through the sky with a warning, and

  360. he does not soften it. Anyone who worships the beast

  361. and receives his mark will drink the wine of God's

  362. anger and be tormented with fire and sulfur in the

  363. presence of the holy angels and in the presence of

  364. the Lamb. That is severe, and it is meant to be.

  365. But notice who the warning is for. It is announced

  366. out loud, in advance, to a world that still has

  367. time to hear it. God does not spring this on anyone,

  368. so if you have lain awake over this, hear the

  369. chapter clearly. It was never describing an accident. It was

  370. describing a choice made in public by people who had

  371. already made it in their hearts. If identifying the beast

  372. is not the assignment, what is? Revelation tells us twice,

  373. and both times it says the same thing. At the

  374. end of chapter 13, right after John describes the beast

  375. making war on God's people and winning, he stops the

  376. narration and speaks directly to the reader. Here, he says,

  377. is the endurance and the faith of the saints. That

  378. is all. In the middle of the worst thing in

  379. the book, the instruction to the reader is to hold on. Then,

  380. one chapter later, after the warning about the mark has

  381. been spoken by an angel, John does it again. Here

  382. is the perseverance of the saints, those who keep the

  383. commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. Revelation chapter

    Revelation 14:12

  384. 14 verse 12. That is the whole assignment. Keep going,

  385. keep trusting Jesus, and keep doing what God has asked

  386. on an ordinary Tuesday when nothing dramatic is happening. It

  387. is a strangely small instruction for such a large chapter.

  388. Revelation was written to churches where the cost of not

  389. bowing was your business, your reputation, sometimes your life. Those

  390. believers did not need a chart of world powers. They

  391. needed to know that staying faithful was enough. That is

  392. still the instruction. Endurance rather than watchfulness over every new

  393. payment method or a search for the man behind the number.

  394. the kind of faith that gets up again on a

  395. bad morning and stays with Jesus one more day. You

  396. only endure something that is hard and that lasts. God

  397. does not promise this chapter will be painless. He promises

  398. that holding on is the victory, and he says it

  399. right where the beast appears to be winning. Because the

  400. beast does appear to win. The chapter says so plainly,

  401. he makes war on the saints and he overcomes them.

  402. I do not want to soften that. God's people lose

  403. this fight, visibly, in front of everyone. The chapter offers

  404. no rescue in the middle, no last-minute reversal, no fire

  405. from heaven on the right side. It simply says, the

  406. beast overcame them. Then, two chapters later, John looks up

  407. and sees something like a sea of glass mixed with fire.

  408. and standing on it are the people who overcame the beast,

  409. and his image, and the number of his name. They

  410. are holding harps, and they are singing. Read those two

  411. accounts together. The people described as overcome in chapter 13

  412. are the same people described as overcomers in chapter 15.

  413. Nothing changed in the events. What changed is the vantage point.

  414. From the ground they lost, from the sea of glass

  415. they won, and they are the ones singing about it.

  416. Revelation never denies the loss. It shows you the same

  417. event from far enough away to see how it ends.

  418. Think of a believer who cannot drive anymore, whose world

  419. has shrunk to a few rooms, whose faith costs her

  420. something every week that nobody sees. From the outside, that

  421. looks like a small defeat. Chapter 13 would call it

  422. Being Overcome. Chapter 15 shows her standing on glass and

  423. fire with a harp in her hands, and the thing

  424. that kept the beast's mark off her was simply that

  425. she stayed. Everything in Revelation 13 is a copy, and

  426. copies only make sense when you know the original. There

  427. is a wound in this book that healed for real.

  428. Early in Revelation, John weeps because no one is worthy

  429. to open the scroll, and then he is told to

  430. look at the Lion of Judah, and when he turns,

  431. he sees a lamb standing there, as though it had

  432. been slain, standing and still carrying the wound. That is

  433. the original. The beast's healed head is the forgery of it.

  434. The difference between them lies in what each one does

  435. with the worship afterward. The beast takes his healed wound

  436. and demands that the world bow, then kills the people

  437. who will not, then stamps his name on the ones

  438. who do. The lamb takes his wound and opens a

  439. scroll no one else could open, and the song that

  440. goes up around him says he purchased people for God

  441. from every tribe and language and nation. He buys them

  442. at his own cost, and the price was the wound

  443. he is still carrying. Both of them end up with

  444. people who belong to them. Only one of them paid

  445. for it himself. The beast's mark is taken by people

  446. trying to survive. God's seal is placed on people before

  447. the trouble even starts, by an angel sent out ahead

  448. of the storm for that exact purpose. One is a

  449. receipt for compliance. The other is a gift with a

  450. name on it. So let me say plainly what Revelation

  451. 13 says the mark is. It is the name of

  452. the beast, worn where a name is worn by someone

  453. who is owned, on the hand that works and the

  454. forehead that thinks. It is given after worship, never before it.

  455. It is enforced through the ordinary machinery of buying and selling,

  456. where most people can be reached, and it is a forgery,

  457. from beginning to end, of a seal God had already

  458. placed on his own people before any of this began.

  459. The chapter never tells us what it is made of,

  460. and I have come to think that silence is a mercy.

  461. It keeps us from spending our lives watching the wrong thing.

  462. I want to speak to you directly now. Some of

  463. you are older than you ever expected to be, and

  464. your world has gotten smaller. Some of you are tired

  465. in a way that sleep does not touch. Some of

  466. you have been carrying a fear about this exact chapter

  467. for years, wondering whether you missed something, whether the church

  468. you left or the card in your purse or the

  469. thing you agreed to has put you on the wrong

  470. side of God without your knowing. Hear the chapter. Nobody

  471. gets marked by the beast by accident. The mark comes

  472. at the end of a road that people walk on purpose,

  473. with their eyes open, in front of a crowd. If

  474. the thought of belonging to anyone but Christ makes your

  475. stomach turn, then your loyalty has already answered the question

  476. that this chapter is asking. And hear the rest of it, too.

  477. Your name was written in a book before the world

  478. had a foundation under it. An angel was sent ahead

  479. of the storm to seal God's servants on their foreheads,

  480. and the judgment of the whole earth waited until it

  481. was done. It was done for you in advance by

  482. a God who did not want you to face any

  483. of this unmarked. That is where Revelation ends. The last

  484. chapter of the Bible describes a city with no more

  485. curse in it, and a throne, and people who serve

  486. God there. They will see His face, and His name

  487. will be on their foreheads. Revelation chapter 22 verse 4

    Revelation 22:4

  488. The final picture of the redeemed in all of Scripture

  489. is a face turned toward God, with a name written

  490. on the forehead. Everyone ends up marked. The whole book

  491. has been telling us so. The only thing that was

  492. ever in question is whose name it would be. And

  493. if you belong to Jesus, that was settled a long

  494. time ago by someone who paid for it with a

  495. wound he still carries. So keep going, not because you

  496. are strong and not because you have the beast figured out.

  497. Keep going because you have been named and sealed and

  498. written down, and because the one who did all three

  499. is standing at the end of it with your name

  500. already on his lips. If this video helped you grow
