  1. Well, it's good to be back with you this morning.

  2. I've been away for three weeks.

  3. ! I was supposed to be teaching a few weeks ago in Central Asia.

  4. That did not happen.

  5. There was a little bit of a change to our schedule,

  6. as some of you are aware of.

  7. About a month ago, Sunday night,

  8. many of you are aware, some of you are not,

  9. my daughter had a cardiac arrest right after the service.

  10. And she, for all intents and purposes,

  11. died right there in the bathroom.

  12. But by God's grace,

  13. through some of your actual activity

  14. in helping to restore her, resuscitate her,

  15. over the next several minutes,

  16. she is now at home.

  17. Actually, I think she's here.

  18. She's here.

  19. Right?

  20. Right?

  21. This morning's passage is going to be a picture

  22. of what our family,

  23. what our family experienced

  24. over the past several weeks.

  25. A picture of investment.

  26. A picture of interest.

  27. A picture of

  28. a church that is vested.

  29. A church that cares.

  30. A church that has been faithful to pray.

  31. A church that has been engaged

  32. in the process

  33. of ministering to

  34. Rachel and her husband and family.

  35. Also to us

  36. and extended family.

  37. I am grateful

  38. for Maranatha Baptist Church.

  39. I cannot think of another church

  40. I would rather be in

  41. than Maranatha Baptist.

  42. It's the work of the Spirit.

  43. God's work

  44. through the lives

  45. of

  46. the saints

  47. who were here

  48. that came through,

  49. that was evident,

  50. that was,

  51. that drew attention

  52. to the power of God

  53. and drew attention

  54. to the work of God

  55. in your lives

  56. as God's Spirit

  57. worked in you

  58. to minister

  59. to our family.

  60. Thank you

  61. for your

  62. active,

  63. deliberate,

  64. and faithful

  65. investments

  66. in ministries

  67. to us

  68. over the last

  69. several weeks.

  70. Thank you.

  71. This morning

  72. we're going to be

  73. looking at a passage

  74. that is familiar

  75. to us.

  76. A passage

  77. where the Holy Spirit's

  78. power

  79. is so visible,

  80. is so evident,

  81. and draws

  82. so much attention

  83. to His work

  84. in the lives

  85. of people

  86. that it is

  87. extraordinary.

  88. It helps

  89. to accentuate

  90. what God

  91. intends

  92. or wants

  93. and desires

  94. to do

  95. for every

  96. single one

  97. of us.

  98. God's Holy Spirit

  99. dwells in

  100. every believer.

  101. Everyone this

  102. morning of you

  103. who know

  104. Jesus Christ

  105. as your Savior,

  106. who have come

  107. to the place

  108. of admitting

  109. your sin,

  110. confessing

  111. your sin,

  112. and believing

  113. that Jesus Christ

  114. not only died

  115. for your sin,

  116. took the cost

  117. of your sin

  118. and mine

  119. on His body,

  120. and then was

  121. resurrected

  122. on the third day

  123. to extend

  124. to us

  125. eternal life

  126. for those

  127. who believe.

  128. For everyone

  129. in this room

  130. and everyone

  131. who is watching

  132. on the live stream

  133. who have come

  134. to enjoy

  135. and experience

  136. the saving work

  137. of Jesus Christ

  138. through faith,

  139. you have

  140. the indwelling

  141. Holy Spirit.

  142. And since you

  143. have the Holy Spirit,

  144. the Holy Spirit

  145. intends to do

  146. something in you.

  147. the Holy Spirit

  148. will not allow you

  149. to stay where you are.

  150. If you

  151. and if I

  152. are responsive

  153. to His work,

  154. His active,

  155. consistent,

  156. deliberate,

  157. faithful work

  158. day by day,

  159. if we are responsive

  160. to that work,

  161. what we're going to see

  162. this morning

  163. from our passage

  164. in Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  165. should shine

  166. through every single life,

  167. every single member

  168. of this body.

  169. I think all of us

  170. could say

  171. that we want to see

  172. the power of God

  173. work in our life.

  174. Would you agree?

  175. I want to see

  176. the power of God

  177. work

  178. in my life.

  179. I want it to be

  180. so unmistakable.

  181. I want it to be

  182. so clear.

  183. Not because I want

  184. attention

  185. on me,

  186. but I want the attention

  187. to go to Him.

  188. I want God's glory

  189. to be so evident,

  190. to be so visible,

  191. to be so obvious,

  192. that the people

  193. that see my life

  194. and the people

  195. that see

  196. the lives

  197. of every believer

  198. filled

  199. with the Spirit

  200. will say,

  201. I want what they have.

  202. There's something

  203. quite exceptional

  204. about their life.

  205. Something quite

  206. extraordinary

  207. about them.

  208. I want that

  209. to be true

  210. of me too.

  211. But as we work

  212. through this passage

  213. today in Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  214. and I would encourage

  215. you to turn there,

  216. Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  217. if you're using

  218. the Pew Bible,

  219. it's on page 912.

  220. The truth

  221. of this passage

  222. this morning

  223. is that while

  224. the power

  225. of the Spirit

  226. is present

  227. and the power

  228. of the Spirit

  229. is available,

  230. in order for us

  231. to really access

  232. and enjoy

  233. and experience

  234. the power,

  235. most times

  236. it comes one way.

  237. You're not going

  238. to enjoy

  239. or experience

  240. the power

  241. of God

  242. if you don't

  243. need it.

  244. You're not

  245. going to experience

  246. or enjoy

  247. the power

  248. of God

  249. if you

  250. push it away

  251. and choose

  252. a road

  253. that's easy.

  254. You're not

  255. going to enjoy

  256. the evident

  257. power of God

  258. without a struggle,

  259. without opposition,

  260. without hard things.

  261. That's when

  262. the power

  263. of God

  264. shows up

  265. and by

  266. God's grace

  267. His power

  268. was so evident

  269. four weeks ago.

  270. His power

  271. was evident

  272. and I want

  273. to see God's

  274. power

  275. but what often

  276. like,

  277. oh,

  278. I want to see

  279. your power

  280. but I want

  281. to see the power

  282. easy,

  283. I want it to be

  284. easy, Lord.

  285. But it doesn't

  286. happen that way

  287. because when

  288. things are easy,

  289. you just don't

  290. need God's power.

  291. power.

  292. I want to

  293. encourage you

  294. right in this

  295. moment

  296. before we even

  297. get started

  298. in this passage

  299. today.

  300. I want just

  301. you and the

  302. Lord,

  303. can I just

  304. encourage you

  305. to close,

  306. just you and

  307. God right now,

  308. close your eyes

  309. and think,

  310. you and God

  311. right now,

  312. answer this

  313. question.

  314. God,

  315. I want

  316. to see

  317. your power.

  318. Oh God,

  319. please,

  320. let me see

  321. your power.

  322. And oh God,

  323. please,

  324. this next step,

  325. allow me

  326. to be open

  327. to you doing

  328. whatever it takes

  329. for that power

  330. to be evident.

  331. Would you be

  332. willing to have

  333. that conversation

  334. with the Lord?

  335. God,

  336. whatever it takes,

  337. I know you

  338. are good.

  339. I know you

  340. allow hard things

  341. sometimes to

  342. happen so that

  343. your power can

  344. show up.

  345. God,

  346. it's worth it.

  347. It's worth it

  348. so that your

  349. glory can be

  350. put on display.

  351. Well,

  352. I trust that

  353. is your prayer

  354. this morning.

  355. And our passage

  356. today from Acts

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  357. chapter 4

  358. will encourage us

  359. to see what

  360. that power

  361. looks like.

  362. It is the

  363. power of God.

  364. The power

  365. of God

  366. is resident

  367. in your life.

  368. Do you see it?

  369. Can you enjoy it?

  370. Are you experiencing it?

  371. I trust you are.

  372. And I trust

  373. that as people

  374. are looking at

  375. your life,

  376. they're like,

  377. oh wow,

  378. the Spirit of God

  379. is so powerful

  380. through them.

  381. I can see

  382. Him at work.

  383. Oh,

  384. may God be glorified

  385. through His

  386. evident power

  387. in us.

  388. You remember

  389. the context

  390. of Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  391. We're going to be

  392. in verses 32,

  393. but you remember

  394. the story.

  395. It actually traces

  396. back to Acts

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  397. chapter 3.

  398. Where Peter and John

  399. are going to the temple

  400. on the day of prayer.

  401. And it's this hour

  402. of prayer.

  403. And they encounter

  404. this lame man.

  405. He's been lame

  406. since birth.

  407. And we come to find out,

  408. well,

  409. he's been alive

  410. for the last 40 years.

  411. And so,

  412. he's been there

  413. at the temple

  414. asking for money.

  415. This is just about

  416. survival for him.

  417. He wants money.

  418. So he asks Peter and John,

  419. they're walking by,

  420. do you got anything

  421. you can give to me?

  422. And Peter says,

  423. well,

  424. you know,

  425. silver and gold

  426. have I none,

  427. but what I have

  428. I'm going to give to you.

  429. In the name of the Lord

  430. Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

  431. rise up and walk.

  432. And he doesn't just try

  433. to kind of

  434. creak up

  435. and try to stumble

  436. into place.

  437. No,

  438. it says he leaps up.

  439. He's walking

  440. into the temple.

  441. He's praising God.

  442. It is clear

  443. that the work

  444. of God has happened.

  445. And because of this

  446. work of God,

  447. it says the people

  448. in the temple

  449. rush to where he is.

  450. They're like,

  451. we know this guy.

  452. What is going on?

  453. There's something

  454. taking place here.

  455. What are we,

  456. what's happening?

  457. Some power

  458. has happened.

  459. And of course,

  460. these people

  461. in the temple,

  462. they remember

  463. just a few weeks

  464. before

  465. that the same power

  466. was present

  467. in the Lord Jesus.

  468. And they're making

  469. this correlation.

  470. Okay,

  471. wait a second.

  472. This same power

  473. happened just a few

  474. weeks ago

  475. in Jesus.

  476. Now it's happening again.

  477. Who are these people?

  478. And Peter

  479. and John

  480. take,

  481. capitalize on the opportunity

  482. to teach the gospel.

  483. They teach in boldness.

  484. And it says that Peter,

  485. by the power

  486. of the Spirit,

  487. he says,

  488. it's by the power

  489. of Jesus Christ,

  490. this man,

  491. has been healed.

  492. Not that by the power

  493. of us.

  494. And he shares

  495. the gospel with them.

  496. It says he shares

  497. the gospel

  498. about the death

  499. of Christ

  500. and the resurrection

  501. of Christ.

  502. He shares with them

  503. the truth

  504. they need to hear.

  505. The only truth

  506. that will save them

  507. from their situation,

  508. from their sin.

  509. And it's the same gospel

  510. that we preach today.

  511. And I would have you know

  512. the consistent pattern

  513. as we work our way

  514. through the book

  515. of Acts

  516. is that every gospel

  517. message must include

  518. the resurrection.

  519. There is not a gospel

  520. without the resurrection.

  521. And we're going to see

  522. attention drawn to that again

  523. as we work our way

  524. through this passage.

  525. Well, the people

  526. are excited

  527. about what God

  528. has done.

  529. Their response

  530. is 5,000

  531. come to faith

  532. in Christ.

  533. But while

  534. they're excited,

  535. the religious leaders

  536. are not.

  537. And they arrest them,

  538. they draw them in,

  539. they interrogate them.

  540. And Peter and John

  541. are there along

  542. with this

  543. once lame man

  544. who's now

  545. in the company.

  546. And they're interrogated

  547. and threatened

  548. by the Sanhedrin.

  549. Well,

  550. the Sanhedrin releases them.

  551. They go back

  552. to their place.

  553. So we find

  554. in chapter 4,

  555. verse 23,

  556. speaking of

  557. John

  558. and Peter,

  559. when they were released,

  560. they went to their friends

  561. and reported

  562. what the chief priests

  563. and elders

  564. had said to them.

  565. And when they heard it,

  566. they lifted

  567. their voices

  568. together

  569. to God.

  570. And we find

  571. that they prayed.

  572. This is the first lesson.

  573. This is not in the notes,

  574. by the way.

  575. Not the first point.

  576. But I think it's

  577. an important lesson

  578. for us to know.

  579. If we want

  580. to be people

  581. who are demonstrating

  582. confidence

  583. in God,

  584. we want to be people

  585. who are experiencing

  586. the power of God,

  587. we're people who pray.

  588. We're going to be

  589. people who pray.

  590. That's what they do.

  591. They pray.

  592. They exalt

  593. the sovereignty

  594. of God.

  595. They acknowledge

  596. His authority

  597. in all situations.

  598. I love the fact

  599. that they

  600. don't pray

  601. like me.

  602. They're not praying

  603. that God

  604. would fix

  605. this hostility.

  606. That He would

  607. put down

  608. the resistance.

  609. That He would

  610. do away

  611. with the adversity.

  612. They're not praying

  613. that way.

  614. They know that God

  615. is sovereign,

  616. that God has a plan,

  617. and that God

  618. delights in using

  619. hard things

  620. to call attention

  621. to His glorious power.

  622. They understand that,

  623. and so they're praying

  624. not for the problems

  625. to go away,

  626. but for courage

  627. to speak

  628. in the midst

  629. of those problems.

  630. give us boldness,

  631. God.

  632. Oh God,

  633. help us

  634. to be courageous

  635. and bold

  636. to speak

  637. about You

  638. because they want

  639. the power of God

  640. to be evident

  641. in their life.

  642. They want the gospel

  643. to be clear.

  644. They want God

  645. to get glory.

  646. It only happens

  647. this way,

  648. and so God answers.

  649. We find that in

  650. chapter 4,

  651. verse 31.

  652. And when they had prayed,

  653. the place

  654. in which

  655. they were gathered

  656. together was

  657. what church?

  658. Shaken.

  659. And they were filled

  660. with the Holy Spirit

  661. and continued

  662. to speak the word

  663. of God

  664. with boldness.

  665. The Holy Spirit

  666. comes on them

  667. in an extraordinary way

  668. and the room

  669. is shaken.

  670. It is unmistakable.

  671. God is present.

  672. God is here.

  673. God's power

  674. is uncontested.

  675. You can trust it.

  676. And if we get

  677. a sense of that,

  678. we will enjoy

  679. the benefits

  680. of this unstoppable God.

  681. The same God

  682. who dwells

  683. in every single believer

  684. and promises

  685. the same power.

  686. Want access

  687. to that power?

  688. You have it.

  689. You want to enjoy

  690. the benefits

  691. of that power?

  692. You can.

  693. And what does

  694. that power look like?

  695. Well,

  696. sometimes,

  697. it doesn't often look

  698. like a room

  699. that shakes.

  700. Matter of fact,

  701. sometimes it looks

  702. a little common

  703. and I think that's

  704. sometimes what

  705. our problem is.

  706. And that's what

  707. we see.

  708. We're going to see

  709. this extraordinary

  710. work of God

  711. among these people.

  712. And maybe it doesn't

  713. look extraordinary

  714. but it is.

  715. I wonder this morning

  716. if this is your experience.

  717. Have you experienced

  718. God's power this way?

  719. Do you want

  720. to experience

  721. God's power this way?

  722. I trust we do.

  723. But it's costly.

  724. It's costly

  725. because God's power

  726. has to make

  727. a weak people

  728. so that His glory

  729. can show up.

  730. because,

  731. as Paul will say,

  732. His grace

  733. is made perfect

  734. in weakness.

  735. We have to be willing

  736. to be

  737. shattered

  738. in order for

  739. God's power

  740. to overcome

  741. the breaking.

  742. Just a brief word

  743. about filling

  744. with the Spirit.

  745. They were filled

  746. with the Spirit.

  747. What is that talking about?

  748. Well,

  749. it's not talking about

  750. a second indwelling.

  751. Okay?

  752. Once we have

  753. the Spirit,

  754. we have the Spirit

  755. fully,

  756. completely.

  757. It's not a second filling.

  758. It's not a power-up

  759. as it were.

  760. Like they got

  761. some of the Spirit

  762. and they're able

  763. to operate

  764. a little bit

  765. but now this

  766. you got this power-up

  767. and the Holy Spirit

  768. I'm filled now.

  769. Now I can do ministry.

  770. No.

  771. They had access

  772. to the Spirit

  773. entirely

  774. at the beginning.

  775. This filling

  776. is about

  777. more about

  778. dispensing

  779. self

  780. so that we can be

  781. more filled up

  782. with the Lord.

  783. It's about

  784. putting away

  785. the things

  786. of our flesh

  787. so we can allow

  788. God to occupy

  789. more of our life.

  790. Paul refers to it

  791. this way

  792. in Ephesians.

  793. He talks about

  794. do not be

  795. drunk with wine

  796. but be filled

  797. with the Spirit.

  798. And the Greek

  799. is actually

  800. pretty emphatic

  801. where it says

  802. be being

  803. kept filled.

  804. This is a continual

  805. process

  806. of the Christian life.

  807. This is laying down.

  808. This is submitting

  809. to His authority

  810. in our life.

  811. And this is moving

  812. moving according

  813. to His plan.

  814. Not grieving

  815. the Spirit.

  816. Not quenching

  817. the Spirit.

  818. But walking

  819. in the Spirit.

  820. What the Spirit

  821. says through

  822. His Word

  823. we do

  824. without question.

  825. The more we do that

  826. the more the Spirit

  827. will occupy

  828. the spaces

  829. of our life

  830. and we'll enjoy

  831. His power.

  832. Okay.

  833. How do we see

  834. the Spirit show up?

  835. First we see

  836. the Spirit show up

  837. in their united

  838. participation.

  839. Their united

  840. participation.

  841. Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4:32

  842. verse 32.

  843. It says this,

  844. Now the full number

  845. of those who believed

  846. were of one heart

  847. and soul

  848. and no one said

  849. that any of the things

  850. that belonged to Him

  851. was His own

  852. but they had everything

  853. in common.

  854. We see their

  855. participation.

  856. This Greek word

  857. plathos

  858. is the word

  859. full number.

  860. That's the

  861. that's where we get

  862. the translation

  863. full number.

  864. It's really the word

  865. multitude.

  866. It's the word

  867. for many.

  868. This specific group

  869. is also governed

  870. by this definite article.

  871. It is the multitude

  872. not just an anonymous group

  873. and it's the multitude

  874. of those who believe.

  875. Every single person

  876. who believe

  877. is part of this number

  878. and the full number

  879. every single one of them

  880. united.

  881. That is the work

  882. of the Spirit.

  883. Full participation.

  884. a church

  885. that knew

  886. they belonged

  887. together.

  888. And

  889. it wasn't just

  890. something

  891. theological

  892. that they

  893. gave mental

  894. assent to.

  895. It was something

  896. that they

  897. were actively

  898. a part

  899. of

  900. shoring up

  901. the process

  902. and

  903. making sure

  904. that was

  905. true about them.

  906. That they were

  907. in fact

  908. as a multitude

  909. however large

  910. that multitude

  911. must have been.

  912. they were

  913. together.

  914. They were

  915. unified.

  916. One heart.

  917. One soul.

  918. As many of the

  919. individuals

  920. as there

  921. must have been.

  922. And we saw

  923. from Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  924. there's at least

  925. 3,000 men.

  926. We see from

  927. Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  928. there's at least

  929. another 5,000 men

  930. plus all the ones

  931. that got saved

  932. along the way.

  933. In Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2:47

  934. verse 47

  935. day by day

  936. the church

  937. grew and multiplied

  938. as God had favor.

  939. this could have

  940. been at least

  941. 10,000 men

  942. and you add

  943. women and children

  944. who knows

  945. 20,000

  946. 30,000

  947. and God

  948. had done such

  949. a work in their

  950. life

  951. they're characterized

  952. this way

  953. one heart

  954. one soul

  955. full participation.

  956. It's extraordinary.

  957. It's a work

  958. of God

  959. and it's

  960. significant

  961. that when

  962. the first signs

  963. of persecution

  964. begin to confront

  965. this church

  966. it doesn't

  967. fracture them

  968. it makes them

  969. that much more

  970. enabled

  971. and empowered

  972. to settle in.

  973. We belong

  974. together

  975. and we've seen

  976. this over and over

  977. again as the mark

  978. of this

  979. people

  980. going all the way

  981. back to Acts

    Acts 1:14

  982. chapter 1

  983. verse 14

  984. these all

  985. with one

  986. accord

  987. were devoting

  988. themselves

  989. to prayer

  990. together

  991. with the women

  992. and Mary

  993. the mother of Jesus

  994. and his brothers.

  995. Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2:1

  996. verse 1

  997. when the day

  998. of the Pentecost

  999. arrived

  1000. they were all

  1001. together

  1002. in one place.

  1003. Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1004. 42 and 44

  1005. and they devoted

  1006. themselves

  1007. to the apostles

  1008. teaching

  1009. and the fellowship

  1010. the breaking of bread

  1011. and prayers

  1012. and all who believed

  1013. were together

  1014. and had all

  1015. things in common.

  1016. Their unity

  1017. is a work

  1018. of the Spirit.

  1019. That's what

  1020. the Spirit does.

  1021. He unifies

  1022. a people.

  1023. He makes them

  1024. one.

  1025. One heart

  1026. one soul

  1027. this is exactly

  1028. what Jesus Christ

  1029. prayed

  1030. for

  1031. future followers

  1032. of him.

  1033. This is what

  1034. Jesus Christ

  1035. prayed for

  1036. Maranatha.

  1037. Here's his prayer.

  1038. Jesus Christ

  1039. prayer for

  1040. this church

  1041. captured

  1042. in John

    John 17:20

  1043. chapter 17

  1044. verse 20

  1045. says this

  1046. I do not

  1047. ask for these

  1048. only

  1049. but also

  1050. for those

  1051. who will

  1052. believe in me

  1053. through their

  1054. word.

  1055. That's you.

  1056. That's me.

  1057. That they

  1058. may be

  1059. one

  1060. just as you

  1061. father are in me

  1062. and I in you

  1063. that they may

  1064. be in us

  1065. so that the

  1066. world may believe

  1067. that you

  1068. have sent

  1069. me.

  1070. Jesus

  1071. cares

  1072. about

  1073. oneness.

  1074. He cares

  1075. about

  1076. unity

  1077. of this

  1078. church

  1079. and not

  1080. just that we

  1081. all kind of

  1082. gather in

  1083. one spot

  1084. and not just

  1085. that there's no

  1086. presence of

  1087. conflict here.

  1088. That's not

  1089. what we're

  1090. talking about

  1091. in terms of

  1092. unity.

  1093. No, we're

  1094. talking about

  1095. a church

  1096. that is so

  1097. vested,

  1098. a church that

  1099. is so

  1100. involved,

  1101. a church that

  1102. cares about

  1103. one another

  1104. so much

  1105. that they

  1106. are one

  1107. heart,

  1108. one soul,

  1109. one objective,

  1110. one priority,

  1111. one purpose,

  1112. one mission.

  1113. It's all,

  1114. they're all

  1115. in.

  1116. All in.

  1117. There's a

  1118. research done

  1119. back in the

  1120. mid-90s.

  1121. It's called

  1122. the Robin Dunbar's

  1123. research on

  1124. social network

  1125. layers.

  1126. And basically,

  1127. they did an

  1128. evaluation of

  1129. how many

  1130. relationships do

  1131. we have and

  1132. kind of what

  1133. are the

  1134. different spheres

  1135. of those

  1136. relationships.

  1137. And what

  1138. they found

  1139. is this.

  1140. In the

  1141. study,

  1142. 5,000

  1143. recognizable

  1144. faces.

  1145. People that

  1146. you recognize,

  1147. you walk

  1148. along,

  1149. I think I

  1150. know that

  1151. face.

  1152. I think I've

  1153. seen them

  1154. before.

  1155. I can't quite

  1156. place it.

  1157. There's about

  1158. 5,000 of

  1159. those,

  1160. okay?

  1161. And then

  1162. within that

  1163. group,

  1164. there's 1,500

  1165. of people who

  1166. would be

  1167. considered familiar.

  1168. Known

  1169. names.

  1170. You can

  1171. generally

  1172. identify that

  1173. person by

  1174. name.

  1175. Then,

  1176. a subgroup

  1177. of 500,

  1178. 500

  1179. acquaintances.

  1180. You actually

  1181. know who

  1182. they are,

  1183. but the

  1184. relationship is

  1185. a little

  1186. superficial.

  1187. Now,

  1188. we're tightening

  1189. even more.

  1190. Now,

  1191. 150

  1192. meaningful

  1193. relationships,

  1194. people with

  1195. whom there

  1196. is real

  1197. history,

  1198. reciprocal

  1199. relationship

  1200. and trust,

  1201. some sense

  1202. of obligation

  1203. to them.

  1204. And this

  1205. was kind

  1206. of all done

  1207. through a

  1208. study where

  1209. who sends

  1210. Christmas cards

  1211. and how many

  1212. are being sent

  1213. and who do

  1214. you send

  1215. them to.

  1216. And usually

  1217. this 150

  1218. is this

  1219. group,

  1220. okay?

  1221. That there's

  1222. some relationship,

  1223. there's some

  1224. reciprocity

  1225. happening,

  1226. there's something

  1227. reciprocal,

  1228. give and take

  1229. that's happening

  1230. there.

  1231. But then we

  1232. kind of tighten

  1233. a little bit

  1234. more to 50.

  1235. 50 what would

  1236. be considered

  1237. good relationships,

  1238. good friendships,

  1239. people with whom

  1240. you maintain

  1241. personal relationship

  1242. with.

  1243. And then 15

  1244. who would be

  1245. close or

  1246. considered best

  1247. friends,

  1248. people you

  1249. would confide

  1250. in and turn

  1251. to when there's

  1252. something significant

  1253. in your life.

  1254. And then 5,

  1255. intimate,

  1256. intimate

  1257. friendships,

  1258. these are the

  1259. people who will

  1260. drop everything

  1261. to come to

  1262. your assistance.

  1263. I wonder

  1264. who are

  1265. your 50.

  1266. Who are

  1267. your 50?

  1268. How are

  1269. you cultivating

  1270. in that 50

  1271. of good

  1272. friendships

  1273. here at

  1274. Maranatha,

  1275. how are you

  1276. cultivating

  1277. better friendships?

  1278. I think it

  1279. usually happens

  1280. through service.

  1281. It happens

  1282. as we

  1283. are ministering.

  1284. Maybe it's

  1285. a little bit

  1286. more casual,

  1287. but there's

  1288. service taking

  1289. place.

  1290. There's a

  1291. give and take

  1292. that's happening.

  1293. There's an

  1294. interest in

  1295. their life.

  1296. There's a

  1297. personal

  1298. commitment

  1299. to try

  1300. to minister

  1301. to their

  1302. needs.

  1303. I wonder

  1304. who are

  1305. the 15?

  1306. Who are

  1307. these close

  1308. friends or

  1309. best friends?

  1310. Who are you

  1311. praying for

  1312. faithfully?

  1313. Who do you

  1314. care about

  1315. enough to

  1316. know what

  1317. their needs

  1318. are and to

  1319. take it to

  1320. the throne

  1321. of grace

  1322. and to

  1323. follow up

  1324. with them

  1325. to make

  1326. sure that

  1327. that friendship

  1328. continues to

  1329. grow deeper?

  1330. And maybe

  1331. the five,

  1332. this intimate

  1333. circle?

  1334. Who are you

  1335. inviting to

  1336. your home?

  1337. Who are those

  1338. friendships that

  1339. you're developing

  1340. and taking

  1341. deeper?

  1342. This is

  1343. something that

  1344. takes activity.

  1345. It doesn't

  1346. just happen

  1347. by accident.

  1348. It's something

  1349. that as the

  1350. Holy Spirit is

  1351. working in your

  1352. life, he

  1353. cultivates this

  1354. kind of life,

  1355. participation.

  1356. But it takes

  1357. work.

  1358. It takes

  1359. work.

  1360. Are you

  1361. vested?

  1362. Do you

  1363. care for

  1364. the Holy

  1365. Spirit to

  1366. show up in

  1367. your life

  1368. this way?

  1369. I've got to

  1370. admit, this

  1371. is one of

  1372. the harder

  1373. ones for

  1374. me.

  1375. It's

  1376. something I

  1377. definitely

  1378. need to do

  1379. better.

  1380. And those

  1381. of you who

  1382. are part of

  1383. the Maranatha

  1384. directory app,

  1385. it can be

  1386. really easy.

  1387. And those

  1388. of you who

  1389. are following

  1390. along with

  1391. the powerhouse

  1392. prayer, there

  1393. are names

  1394. that are in

  1395. that and

  1396. through the

  1397. course of

  1398. the months

  1399. working through

  1400. every family

  1401. and every name

  1402. of individuals

  1403. who call

  1404. Maranatha

  1405. their home.

  1406. Are we

  1407. serious about

  1408. seeing the

  1409. Spirit's power

  1410. show up in

  1411. our life?

  1412. Enough to

  1413. take this

  1414. seriously.

  1415. To be

  1416. participating in

  1417. one another's

  1418. lives.

  1419. Not just

  1420. showing up on

  1421. a Sunday

  1422. morning, but

  1423. being active

  1424. in participation.

  1425. I know I

  1426. need to do

  1427. better.

  1428. I trust that

  1429. you will

  1430. also press

  1431. in.

  1432. Their united

  1433. participation.

  1434. Second, we

  1435. see their

  1436. eager

  1437. cooperation.

  1438. Their eager

  1439. cooperation.

  1440. We see that in

  1441. verses 32 and

  1442. 34.

  1443. It says,

  1444. Now the full

  1445. number of those

  1446. who believed

  1447. were of one

  1448. heart and

  1449. soul, and no

  1450. one said that

  1451. any of the

  1452. things that

  1453. belonged to

  1454. him was his

  1455. own, but they

  1456. had everything

  1457. in common.

  1458. Verse 44,

  1459. And all who

  1460. believed were

  1461. together, and

  1462. had all things

  1463. in common, and

  1464. they were selling

  1465. their possessions

  1466. and belongings, and

  1467. distributing the

  1468. proceeds to all as

  1469. any had need.

1470. Now I just want to,

1471. just a word of the

  1472. book of Acts.

  1473. This is descriptive,

  1474. not prescriptive,

  1475. meaning this is what

  1476. the church did, not

  1477. necessarily what the

  1478. mandate for us is.

  1479. But let me tell

  1480. you, when the

  1481. Holy Spirit is

  1482. present, we want

  1483. to follow the

  1484. Spirit's lead,

  1485. right?

  1486. And so, if this

  1487. is what extravagant

  1488. love and

  1489. participation looks

  1490. like, if this is

  1491. what cooperation

  1492. looks like, if this

  1493. is what the

  1494. Spirit on a life

  1495. looks like, oh

  1496. Lord, please help

  1497. me.

  1498. Help me to do

  1499. better at this.

  1500. Help me to be

  1501. aware of needs.

  1502. Help me to be

  1503. cooperative in the

  1504. process.

  1505. And look at the

  1506. comprehensiveness of

  1507. these words.

  1508. How comprehensive.

1509. No one said any of

  1510. the things, everything

  1511. in common.

  1512. Comprehensive nature

  1513. of their sharing

  1514. because they were

  1515. all one heart, one

  1516. soul.

  1517. They were a family,

  1518. a spiritual family.

  1519. family.

  1520. This body was

  1521. engaged.

  1522. They were alert.

  1523. They knew the

  1524. needs.

  1525. They were actively

  1526. identifying and

  1527. meeting those needs.

  1528. They knew who they

  1529. were.

  1530. They knew who the

  1531. problems were.

  1532. They knew how they

  1533. could contribute to

  1534. those problems and

  1535. help to remedy those

  1536. problems.

1537. You know, when I was

  1538. a kid growing up, I

  1539. learned from the

  1540. example of my

  1541. family.

  1542. And I trust that

  1543. as families, we

  1544. are setting this

  1545. pattern for our

  1546. children as well.

  1547. And I think a lot

  1548. of the things that

  1549. I've learned and

  1550. have benefited from

  1551. have resulted from

  1552. the great

  1553. indoctrination of

  1554. my mom and dad.

  1555. When I was growing

1556. up, my dad being a

  1557. pastor, he did not

  1558. make much at all.

1559. But my mom and dad

  1560. had a spirit of

  1561. generosity.

  1562. They wanted to

  1563. invite people into

  1564. their home.

  1565. They wanted to

  1566. meet needs.

  1567. And oftentimes

  1568. what that meant is

  1569. when we had people

  1570. over to our house,

  1571. there was only so

  1572. much that could be

  1573. put on the table.

  1574. And so when you

  1575. have a family of

  1576. six plus other

  1577. guests that are

  1578. coming, then that

  1579. means there's not a

  1580. whole lot to go

  1581. around.

1582. So my dad had a

  1583. code.

  1584. The code that he

  1585. would say before

  1586. any of us would

  1587. sit down was

  1588. FHB.

  1589. FHB.

  1590. What does that

  1591. mean?

  1592. Well, it means

  1593. family hold back.

  1594. Family hold back.

  1595. And so when he

  1596. said FHB,

  1597. we knew our

  1598. portions were

  1599. going to be

  1600. intentionally small

  1601. so that we

  1602. could defer to

  1603. our guests.

  1604. I wonder if

  1605. in the church

  1606. of Jerusalem

  1607. that was kind

  1608. of the mantra.

  1609. Hey, FHB.

  1610. FHB.

  1611. Family hold

  1612. back.

  1613. We have the

  1614. joy of

  1615. contributing.

  1616. The joy of

  1617. sharing.

  1618. The joy of

  1619. distributing.

  1620. Family hold

  1621. back.

  1622. for the sake

  1623. of the glory

  1624. of God

  1625. and the

  1626. wonder

  1627. of God

  1628. providing

  1629. through

  1630. us

  1631. and his

  1632. spirit

  1633. working in

  1634. us

  1635. not only to

  1636. meet the

  1637. needs of

  1638. others

  1639. but then to

  1640. see how

  1641. God graciously

  1642. meets and

  1643. attends to our

  1644. needs as well.

  1645. You see,

  1646. we can't

  1647. understand or

  1648. see that God

  1649. is able to

  1650. meet a need

  1651. when that

  1652. need is not

  1653. present.

  1654. And what a

  1655. beautiful portrait

  1656. of God's work

  1657. when we're

  1658. willing to

  1659. share.

  1660. And that the

  1661. family intentionally

  1662. holds back.

  1663. It was also

  1664. important to

  1665. see is that

  1666. there wasn't

  1667. a needy person

  1668. because the

  1669. needy people

  1670. also had the

  1671. same goal.

  1672. They

  1673. understood

  1674. that

  1675. they needed

  1676. to press in

  1677. as well.

  1678. They needed

  1679. to contribute

  1680. as well.

  1681. And so

  1682. their needs

  1683. were smaller.

  1684. They were

  1685. real needs.

  1686. They were

  1687. truly impoverished.

  1688. They were

  1689. truly in short

  1690. of what was

  1691. necessary.

  1692. And they

  1693. only took

  1694. what was

  1695. necessary so

  1696. the rest

  1697. could be

  1698. distributed

  1699. to others.

  1700. It was a

  1701. collaborative,

  1702. cooperative

  1703. effort.

  1704. MacArthur

  1705. has said

  1706. they were

  1707. focused

  1708. beyond

  1709. themselves

  1710. to reaching

  1711. the lost

  1712. world with

  1713. the truth

  1714. of the

  1715. gospel.

  1716. That left

  1717. them little

  1718. time to

  1719. bother with

  1720. trivial

  1721. personal

  1722. matters.

  1723. Sharing

  1724. requires

  1725. awareness.

  1726. It requires

  1727. alertness.

  1728. It requires

  1729. being involved.

  1730. It requires

  1731. relationship so

  1732. we know what

  1733. the needs

  1734. are and the

  1735. work of the

  1736. spirit in our

  1737. life to be

  1738. willing to

  1739. share for the

  1740. glory of God.

  1741. So we've

  1742. seen their

  1743. united

  1744. participation,

  1745. their eager

  1746. cooperation,

  1747. and in

  1748. verse 33

  1749. we see their

  1750. spirit-filled

  1751. proclamation.

  1752. Spirit-filled

  1753. proclamation.

  1754. And with

  1755. great power

  1756. the apostles

  1757. were giving

  1758. their testimony

  1759. to the

  1760. resurrection,

  1761. here it is,

  1762. resurrection of

  1763. the Lord

  1764. Jesus.

  1765. Great

  1766. power.

  1767. It's the word

  1768. mega.

  1769. mega.

  1770. Mega

  1771. dunamai.

  1772. Great

  1773. power.

  1774. And this

  1775. is the

  1776. mark.

  1777. This is the

  1778. mark of a

  1779. church that

  1780. is filled by

  1781. the spirit.

  1782. This is the

  1783. promise that

  1784. Christ gave to

  1785. the disciples

  1786. very early on

  1787. in Acts chapter

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1788. 1.

  1789. He says in

  1790. Acts 1.8,

  1791. remember what he

  1792. says?

  1793. You will

  1794. receive

  1795. power when

  1796. the Holy

  1797. Spirit has

  1798. come upon

  1799. you.

  1800. See,

  1801. power always

  1802. has a

  1803. purpose.

  1804. Power always

  1805. has an

  1806. objective.

  1807. It's always

  1808. directional.

  1809. It's always

  1810. with the

  1811. purpose of

  1812. making much

  1813. of God,

  1814. not in

  1815. making much

  1816. of me.

  1817. And that

  1818. power was

  1819. promised early

  1820. and it

  1821. becomes this

  1822. consistent

  1823. evidence of

  1824. what we see

  1825. all the way

  1826. through.

  1827. Acts chapter

    Acts 2:43

  1828. 2,

  1829. verse 43,

  1830. awe came upon

  1831. every soul

  1832. and many

  1833. wonders and

  1834. signs were

  1835. being done

  1836. through the

  1837. apostles.

  1838. That's

  1839. power.

  1840. Acts 3.12,

  1841. and when

  1842. Peter saw

  1843. it, he

  1844. addressed the

  1845. people, men

  1846. of Israel,

  1847. why do you

  1848. wonder at

  1849. this or why

  1850. do you stare

  1851. at us as

  1852. though by

  1853. our own

  1854. power or

  1855. piety we

  1856. have made

  1857. him walk?

  1858. Power was

  1859. present.

  1860. The Spirit

  1861. was working.

  1862. It was a

  1863. power of

  1864. proclamation.

  1865. That's what

  1866. they prayed

  1867. for.

  1868. Courage,

  1869. boldness to

  1870. proclaim Christ.

  1871. And this is

  1872. when people

  1873. turn to God.

  1874. They find that

  1875. God gives

  1876. them overcoming

  1877. strength.

  1878. Overcoming

  1879. strength.

  1880. And they

  1881. return to

  1882. pray with

  1883. their friends

  1884. and God

  1885. through his

  1886. Spirit gives

  1887. them, his

  1888. Spirit fills

  1889. them for a

  1890. purpose to

  1891. proclaim, to

  1892. witness.

  1893. And when they

  1894. come back, what

  1895. do they do?

  1896. They witness,

  1897. they speak.

  1898. I wonder how

  1899. many of us

  1900. need that

  1901. kind of

  1902. power.

  1903. Man, it's so

  1904. easy to be

  1905. afraid, isn't

  1906. it?

  1907. It's so easy

  1908. to be

  1909. intimidated by

  1910. opposition.

  1911. And maybe

  1912. some of you

  1913. are in

  1914. positions where

  1915. you've been

  1916. told to keep

  1917. your mouth

  1918. shut.

  1919. That if you

  1920. say certain

  1921. things, that

  1922. you're going to

  1923. risk losing

  1924. your job.

  1925. And I

  1926. don't know,

  1927. there's wisdom

  1928. in speaking at

  1929. the right times,

  1930. being wise as

  1931. serpents and

  1932. harmless as

  1933. doves, but I

  1934. wonder, even in

  1935. some of those

  1936. casual relationships,

  1937. how much of us,

  1938. God, I need

  1939. your power to

  1940. be present in

  1941. my life.

  1942. I need your

  1943. speaking,

  1944. proclaiming power,

  1945. not only to

  1946. have courage, but

  1947. the wisdom of

  1948. your Spirit to

  1949. be able to say

  1950. what needs to be

  1951. said in this

  1952. moment.

  1953. He will give

  1954. that.

  1955. He gives

  1956. wisdom.

  1957. He gives

  1958. power.

  1959. His Spirit

  1960. provides it.

  1961. United

  1962. participation,

  1963. eager

  1964. cooperation,

  1965. Spirit-filled

  1966. proclamation,

  1967. and then

  1968. Spirit-enabled

  1969. transformation.

  1970. We see that at

  1971. the end of

  1972. verse 33.

  1973. And with

  1974. great power,

  1975. the apostles

  1976. were giving

  1977. their testimony

  1978. to the

  1979. resurrection of

  1980. the Lord

  1981. Jesus, and

  1982. then this,

  1983. and great

  1984. grace was

  1985. upon them

  1986. all.

  1987. Great grace

  1988. was upon

  1989. them all.

  1990. What does

  1991. that mean?

  1992. They're already

  1993. saved.

  1994. They're already

  1995. part of the

  1996. fellowship.

  1997. They've already

  1998. experienced the

  1999. grace of God,

  2000. this unmerited

  2001. favor in

  2002. drawing them

  2003. in to Christ.

  2004. They've enjoyed

  2005. the benefits of

  2006. this work in

  2007. their life.

  2008. What is this

  2009. grace that we're

  2010. talking about?

  2011. Great grace

  2012. was upon them.

  2013. And I think

  2014. as we read

  2015. through the

  2016. rest of the

  2017. book of Acts,

  2018. and as we

  2019. then access

  2020. some of the

  2021. letters that

  2022. the apostle

  2023. Paul preached

  2024. and wrote,

  2025. then we come

  2026. to understand

  2027. grace is more

  2028. than just

  2029. salvation.

  2030. It's the work

  2031. of the Spirit

  2032. in life.

  2033. It is the

  2034. evident nature,

  2035. the evident

  2036. presence of

  2037. the Spirit

  2038. working in

  2039. a life to

  2040. transform them,

  2041. to make them

  2042. something that

  2043. they're not,

  2044. to change them

  2045. from what they

  2046. were to what

  2047. Christ intends

  2048. to do for

  2049. them.

  2050. God's grace

  2051. was evident.

  2052. It means His

  2053. Spirit was so

  2054. obvious, so

  2055. tangible, so

  2056. evident, so

  2057. visible, it's

  2058. like, wow, God

  2059. is here.

  2060. That's what we

  2061. mean when we

  2062. talk about the

  2063. grace of God,

  2064. the great grace

  2065. of God.

  2066. That everyone

  2067. looking at this

  2068. church said,

  2069. ah,

  2070. I know how

  2071. to explain

  2072. this.

  2073. God is here.

  2074. God is among

  2075. His people.

  2076. It's unquestionable.

  2077. I know what's

  2078. happening.

  2079. And we,

  2080. as we look

  2081. through the

  2082. book of Acts,

  2083. that's what we

  2084. see.

  2085. Acts chapter 6

    Acts 6:8

  2086. verse 8, I'll

  2087. just give you a

  2088. couple examples.

  2089. And Stephen,

  2090. full of grace

  2091. and power.

  2092. He's already

  2093. saved.

  2094. What is this

  2095. grace?

  2096. Well, it's the

  2097. evident work of

  2098. the Spirit.

  2099. Coupled with

  2100. power.

  2101. With great

  2102. grace and power

  2103. was doing great

  2104. wonders and signs

  2105. among the people.

  2106. The grace of God

  2107. was on him.

  2108. Acts 11, 23.

  2109. This is the

  2110. church of Antioch.

  2111. This church of

  2112. Antioch was

  2113. growing and

  2114. multiplying and

  2115. flourishing because

  2116. of the preaching of

  2117. God's word.

  2118. And Barnabas will go

  2119. to this church.

  2120. And it's

  2121. interesting.

  2122. It's fascinating.

  2123. Notice what it

  2124. says in 11, 23.

  2125. When he came,

  2126. speaking of

  2127. Barnabas, when he

  2128. came and saw the

  2129. grace of God, he

  2130. was glad.

  2131. And he exhorted

  2132. them to all remain

  2133. faithful to the

  2134. Lord with steadfast

  2135. purpose.

2136. He saw the grace of

  2137. God?

  2138. What did he see?

2139. Oh, he saw this kind

  2140. of church that we're

  2141. talking about this

  2142. morning.

2143. He saw a church that

  2144. was participating with

  2145. one another.

2146. He saw a church that

  2147. was cooperating in

  2148. sharing.

2149. He saw a church that

  2150. was thriving in

  2151. gospel proclamation

  2152. because the church

  2153. was exploding.

  2154. The grace of God

  2155. was there because

  2156. the Spirit was

  2157. working.

  2158. It was evident.

  2159. It was clear.

  2160. God's here.

  2161. God is here.

  2162. Oh.

  2163. You want that kind

  2164. of grace?

  2165. That's the kind of

  2166. grace that the

  2167. Spirit desires to do

  2168. for every single

  2169. one of us.

  2170. Great grace.

  2171. Not just

  2172. supplementary grace

2173. to get you to the

  2174. next day.

  2175. But great,

  2176. extravagant,

  2177. overflowing,

  2178. abundant grace.

  2179. The power of God

  2180. working in your

  2181. life.

  2182. That kind of

  2183. grace.

  2184. That's what we can

  2185. have if we allow

  2186. the Spirit to have

  2187. His way in our

  2188. life.

  2189. life.

2190. But it comes at a

  2191. cost.

  2192. And so that's what

  2193. the Apostle Paul

  2194. talks about in

  2195. 2 Corinthians 12.9.

  2196. Where Jesus says to

  2197. Paul, after he says,

  2198. will you take away

  2199. this inconvenience in

  2200. my life?

2201. And by the way, I

  2202. think it's appropriate

  2203. to pray that God

  2204. takes away thorns in

  2205. our flesh.

  2206. That is appropriate.

2207. But we need to be

  2208. ready for the response

  2209. when the response

  2210. comes.

  2211. And God's response

  2212. to him is,

  2213. Paul, my grace,

  2214. my grace is

  2215. sufficient for you.

  2216. For my strength is

  2217. made perfect in your

  2218. weakness.

  2219. Therefore, I will boast

  2220. in my infirmities that

  2221. the power of Christ

  2222. may rest upon me.

  2223. I want the grace.

2224. And if that means I

  2225. got to be weak,

2226. oh God, give me the

  2227. weakness so I can

  2228. enjoy your grace,

  2229. your power,

  2230. your strengthening

  2231. might for your glory.

  2232. In verses 34 to 35,

  2233. we come to their

  2234. deliberate act of

  2235. consecration.

  2236. Their deliberate act

  2237. of consecration.

  2238. It says,

  2239. there was not a

  2240. needy person among

  2241. them.

2242. For as many as were

  2243. owners of lands or

  2244. houses sold them and

  2245. brought the proceeds

  2246. of what was sold

2247. and laid it at the

  2248. apostles' feet.

  2249. And it was

  2250. distributed to each

  2251. as any had need.

  2252. I love this.

  2253. And consecration is

  2254. a word to set

  2255. apart from common

  2256. or secular use to

  2257. something that's

  2258. consecrated,

  2259. something that's

  2260. dedicated to God,

  2261. something that has a

  2262. spiritual purpose.

  2263. And that's what these

  2264. people were doing.

  2265. these disciples who

  2266. wanted to contribute,

  2267. they were aware of

  2268. needs, but sometimes

  2269. they weren't.

2270. And in their desire to

2271. be part of the work

  2272. of God, they just

  2273. entrusted or consecrated,

  2274. they dedicated those

  2275. funds to the

  2276. apostles.

2277. They laid it at their

  2278. feet and said,

  2279. this is for Christ.

2280. This is for Him to

  2281. use however He sees

  2282. fit.

  2283. And sometimes we are

  2284. in, as it were,

  2285. the driver's seat of

  2286. helping to meet

  2287. specific needs of

  2288. people around us

  2289. because we're aware

  2290. of them.

  2291. But sometimes,

  2292. sometimes we don't

  2293. know about needs and

  2294. sometimes we might

2295. know about a need but

  2296. we want to be

  2297. anonymous in the

  2298. process.

  2299. We consecrate this to

  2300. God.

  2301. We lay this offering

2302. at the feet of the

  2303. leaders and we allow

2304. God to use our gifts

  2305. for His glory.

  2306. A couple principles

  2307. of giving.

  2308. First, giving is to

  2309. be anonymous.

  2310. It's to be anonymous.

  2311. In Matthew chapter

    Matthew 6:3

  2312. 6 verses 3 and 4 it

  2313. says,

  2314. When you give alms,

2315. do not let your left

  2316. hand know what your

  2317. right hand is doing.

  2318. May your Father who

  2319. sees in secret repay

  2320. you openly.

  2321. Trust the Lord,

  2322. give anonymously.

  2323. Second, giving needs

  2324. to be in faith.

2325. And we find that all

  2326. throughout the

  2327. scripture.

  2328. We find from 1st

  2329. Timothy chapter 3

  2330. 3 that the

  2331. qualification for a

2332. leader is not to be

  2333. a lover of money.

  2334. We find throughout

  2335. the scripture the

  2336. commitment of giving

  2337. that requires a

  2338. measure of faith.

  2339. We're trusting the

2340. Lord to take care of

  2341. the needs that we

  2342. have as we're

  2343. distributing to

  2344. others.

  2345. Third, giving needs

  2346. to be voluntary.

  2347. We find that from

  2348. 2nd Corinthians

  2349. chapter 9 verse

  2350. 7.

  2351. Each one must give

  2352. as he has decided

  2353. in his heart,

  2354. not reluctantly or

  2355. under compulsion,

  2356. for God loves a

  2357. cheerful giver.

  2358. Fourth, giving is an

  2359. eternal investment.

  2360. Lay not up for

  2361. yourselves treasures

  2362. on earth, where

  2363. moth and rust corrupt,

  2364. where thieves break

  2365. through and steal,

  2366. but lay up for

  2367. yourselves treasures

  2368. in heaven, where

  2369. neither moth nor rust

  2370. corrupt, where thieves

  2371. do not break through

  2372. or steal, for where

  2373. your treasure is,

  2374. there will your heart

  2375. be also.

  2376. We recognize that

  2377. the giving that we

  2378. contribute, while

  2379. physical in nature,

  2380. really has a

  2381. spiritual element.

  2382. We are giving for

  2383. the sake of

  2384. eternity.

  2385. We're trusting the

  2386. Lord with those

  2387. gifts and asking

  2388. that he would be

  2389. glorified in the

  2390. giving of those

  2391. things.

  2392. Finally, we've seen

  2393. their united

  2394. participation,

  2395. their eager

  2396. cooperation,

  2397. their spirit-filled

  2398. proclamation,

  2399. their spirit-empowered

  2400. transformation,

  2401. their deliberate act

  2402. of consecration,

  2403. and finally, the

  2404. continuing evidence

  2405. of dedication.

  2406. The continuing

  2407. evidence of

  2408. dedication.

  2409. And now the

  2410. spotlight shifts to

  2411. one.

  2412. Now we've been

  2413. working to look at

  2414. an entire group,

  2415. a multitude there

  2416. in Jerusalem,

  2417. and now the lens

  2418. kind of shifts,

  2419. and now we're kind

  2420. of spotlighting this

  2421. person Barnabas or

  2422. Joseph.

  2423. He's just one of

  2424. the collective.

  2425. But God uses this

  2426. dedication of this

  2427. man Joseph, who is

  2428. known by the

  2429. apostles as Barnabas,

  2430. as kind of a

  2431. starting point as it

  2432. were, to launch the

  2433. rest of his faith-filled

  2434. ministry.

  2435. Verse 36,

  2436. Thus Joseph, who was

  2437. also called by the

  2438. apostles Barnabas,

  2439. which means son of

  2440. encouragement, a

  2441. Levite, a native of

  2442. Cyprus, he sold a

  2443. field that belonged

  2444. to him and brought

  2445. the money and laid

  2446. it at the apostles'

  2447. feet.

  2448. This is significant.

  2449. He sold his

  2450. property.

  2451. We find earlier in

  2452. verse 34 and 35,

  2453. they sold their

  2454. homes.

  2455. This in the first

  2456. century was

  2457. significant because

  2458. this was their

  2459. future.

  2460. And much of this

  2461. property had been

  2462. handed down generation

  2463. after generation

  2464. after generation.

  2465. This was their

  2466. legacy.

  2467. And yet they were

  2468. willing to abandon

  2469. these things for the

  2470. sake of the cause.

  2471. Primarily the cause

  2472. of showing Christ

  2473. and being useful for

  2474. gospel ministry.

  2475. And here's Barnabas.

2476. And we know his story

2477. because this is kind of

  2478. the first glimpse of

  2479. his dedication that God

2480. then takes this work or

2481. act of faith and he

  2482. multiplies it.

  2483. What seemed like a

  2484. subtraction for

  2485. Barnabas will actually

  2486. become an addition

  2487. because God will now

  2488. multiply his ministry.

2489. Yes, he's laid down his

  2490. physical property, but if

2491. you know the rest of the

  2492. story, you'll understand

  2493. that Barnabas becomes so

  2494. influential and so

  2495. prominent that it is

  2496. Barnabas that actually

  2497. goes and fetches Paul,

  2498. brings him back to

  2499. Antioch, and the church

  2500. mission begins.

  2501. That's Barnabas.

  2502. Sometimes God uses

  2503. extraordinary acts of

  2504. faith, obedience, to

  2505. begin the process of

2506. working in our life to

2507. get us to something even

  2508. greater.

2509. But my guess is for

2510. most of us in this room,

  2511. God will normally just

  2512. use common and

  2513. ordinary steps of

  2514. faith.

  2515. What does God say?

2516. How do I need to

  2517. obey?

2518. How will I then benefit

2519. and see the work of

2520. God's grace in my life?

  2521. I trust that every

2522. single one of us want

  2523. great grace.

  2524. It happens one way.

2525. It happens as God leads

  2526. leads us through his

  2527. word and through his

  2528. spirit, and we say

  2529. yes.

  2530. Are you willing to

2531. say yes to the things

2532. that God has called you

  2533. to do this week?

2534. And when you do, God

  2535. by his spirit will

  2536. enable that work and

  2537. glorify himself.

  2538. May God be glorious

  2539. among us.

  2540. Let's pray.

  2541. Father, thank you for

  2542. the example of this

  2543. church that we see

  2544. here in Acts chapter

  2545. four.

2546. And Lord, I pray that

2547. you would help us not

2548. to see this and just

  2549. epitomize this.

  2550. This is an exceptional

  2551. church, and we can

  2552. draw attention to the

2553. wonder of what you did

  2554. among these people.

2555. And while that is true,

2556. Lord, I pray that you

  2557. would help us to

  2558. recognize that you can

2559. do this same work in

  2560. us because we have

  2561. the same spirit.

  2562. Lord, may we be

  2563. yielded to your work.

2564. May we learn to say

  2565. yes.

  2566. And may the

  2567. mantra

  2568. of our

  2569. efforts and

  2570. activities be

  2571. FHB,

  2572. family hold back

  2573. for the sake

2574. of the glory of God

  2575. and the benefit

  2576. benefit of the body.

  2577. May you be glorified.

2578. We pray in Jesus' name.

  2579. Amen.

  2580. God bless you.

  2581. Have a great week.
