    Jeremiah 39 chapter mention

  3. Appreciate those who persevered and

  4. being with us in this largest book of

  5. the Bible, the book of Jeremiah.

  6. That's quite a long trip. And here we

  7. are in chapter 39.

  8. This is a climax.

  9. As we come to this chapter in Jeremiah,

  10. we see the siege of the city of

  11. Jerusalem by the neoablonian empire

  12. is has taken effect

  13. and the walls have been broken through

  14. and the city defeated

  15. and people carried off into exile,

  16. evicted from the holy city by the holy

  17. Lord.

  18. Jeremiah

  19. went was in prison for that much of that

  20. siege uh in two different places. None

  21. of them very pleasant.

  22. And

  23. um

  24. Jeremiah is a wonderful book telling us

  25. about these incredible events

  26. and tragedy has followed tragedy.

  27. None of these things, none of these

  28. things would have happened

  29. if only the king had repented.

  30. Very amazing. All he had to do was

  31. embrace God's word.

  32. And he was told that over and over

  33. again,

  34. [snorts]

  35. but he did not repent.

  36. And he was too weak,

  37. too much under the thumb of other

  38. people. You know people like that, don't

  39. you? They're afraid to become a

  40. Christian because of a relative or a

  41. somebody at work or somebody that they

  42. know that dominates them.

  43. And

  44. it's all very very sad business really.

  45. And so

  46. without a doubt, the fall of Jerusalem

  47. described in this passage

  48. uh dramatically

  49. authenticated all of Jeremiah's

  50. prophecies.

  51. Just want you to think about that. When

  52. this big one came true,

  53. everybody that had been aware of

  54. Jeremiah for 30, 40 years knew

  55. he's a real prophet.

  56. And he'd been saying it. Everybody been

  57. fighting him. He kept saying it because

  58. God kept telling him. So without a

  59. doubt, this fall of Jerusalem was a

  60. vindication of the prophet.

  61. The coming of Jesus and the judgment of

  62. this world will be a vindication of you

  63. and me as Christians.

  64. We don't have to vindicate ourselves. We

  65. don't have to worry about our

  66. reputations.

  67. We don't have to worry about those who

  68. are against us because we're saved. The

  69. day is coming when everybody will know

  70. who was right and who was wrong.

  71. The day is coming when uh God's people

  72. and God's uh word will be vindicated

  73. from those who are against it.

  74. Um

  75. it's it's a rather solemn thought

  76. really. I mean if the the judgment of

  77. the holy city is a prefiguring of the

  78. judgment of the whole world.

  79. And so the God that kept his word about

  80. that, this city's going to be burned, is

  81. going to keep his word about the whole

  82. planet and the whole universe are going

  83. to be burned. Everybody follow me on

  84. that? God's told us both.

  85. And so this isn't just something that's

  86. ancient history.

  87. Uh 586 BC, way back even before Jesus

  88. was born. It is that, but it's also a

  89. very clear indication that when God says

  90. something's going to happen, it's going

  91. to happen.

  92. We better be listening.

  93. You better be listening.

  94. And so,

  95. um,

  96. this is quite important.

  97. And as we read it, let's just read it

  98. together. Jeremiah 39.

  99. In the ninth

  100. year of Zedekiah, king of Judah, in the

  101. 10th month came Neb Nebu Cadrezer, king

  102. of Babylon. You can call him

  103. Nebuchadnezzar or this particular

  104. spelling of his name, Nebu Cadrezer,

  105. or as my Old Testament professor

  106. professor called him, Nabu Kadori Utsor.

  107. if you want to call him by that,

  108. king of Babylon

  109. and all his army against Jerusalem and

  110. they besieged it. And in the 11th year

  111. of Zedekiah, now here we go. We start

  112. out with the ninth year. Now we're in

  113. the 11th year. This was this uh things

  114. are dug on.

  115. In the fourth month, the ninth day of

  116. the month, the city was broken up.

  117. So you remember Nebuchadnezzar came

  118. against it with his armies. Uh the

  119. armies got diverted by attention by

  120. Egypt. They left for a little while.

  121. They came back and then they just picked

  122. up where they left off.

  123. And all the princes of Babylon came in

  124. and sat in the middle gate, even Nargal

  125. Shereé,

  126. Samgar Nebo,

  127. Star Satim the Rabsarus and Nargal

  128. Sharzer and Rabmag with all the residue

  129. of the princes of the king of Babylon.

  130. I'm glad there were more of them because

  131. it was hard enough to read those.

  132. Now what's it talking about here? This

  133. is extremely significant.

  134. [clears throat]

  135. Business was done in the city gate

  136. and there was a place where the rulers

  137. would sit

  138. and make judgments on all kinds of

  139. things.

  140. But now with this uh defeat of the city

  141. and the breaking in of the walls, the

  142. Babylonians have taken over and the

  143. leadership of the Babylonian armies

  144. are now sitting in the place where the

  145. Jewish leadership

  146. used to sit.

  147. Remember in those times every little

  148. town you would you'd go to the gate,

  149. you'd sit at the gate and in the gate

  150. business was done. Remember the book of

  151. Ruth, the exchanging of the shoe and all

  152. that.

  153. Well, here it's the gate of the capital

  154. city of the theocracy.

  155. It's been taken over

  156. and these foreign leaders are now in

  157. authority.

  158. The Jewish leadership is not in

  159. authority anymore.

  160. They're beating they're beating feet out

  161. of town.

  162. uh they had a secret way to get out and

  163. pass through the lines.

  164. So now the Babylonians have total

  165. control over the city.

  166. They're running it.

  167. It came to pass that when Zedekiah, the

  168. king of Judah, saw them, verse four, and

  169. all the men of war, then they fled. So

  170. the king and some of the leadership of

  171. the army, they get out of town. They get

  172. out of dodge. They're they're they're

  173. gone. And there must have been some kind

  174. of secret way out that the Babylonians

  175. didn't know about for them to slip

  176. through the lines and do what they did.

  177. They fled and went forth out of the city

  178. by night by way of the king's garden by

  179. the gate between the two walls. And he

  180. went out the way of the Arabal.

  181. So they get out and they're trying to

  182. get away from the Babylonians.

  183. Uh it's shameful.

  184. He made decisions

  185. that everybody in that city suffered for

  186. that he didn't stay with them

  187. when the city had been taken. He was

  188. told by Jeremiah over and over and over

  189. and over again ad nauseium that the

  190. Babylons are going to conquer the city.

  191. surrender to the Babylonians. He didn't

  192. do it. He didn't do it to the end. And

  193. now he takes off trying to get away from

  194. the Babylonians.

  195. He hasn't surrendered to them. He's

  196. trying to sneak through their lines.

  197. He had no honor.

  198. This is Jerusalem wasn't the Alamo for

  199. him. He wasn't going to stay there and

  200. hide. He was going to see if he could

  201. get out and get away with his family.

  202. But the Calaldans's army pursued after

  203. them and they overtook Zedekiah in the

  204. plains of Jericho. He made it all the

  205. way from Jerusalem to Jericho. He made

  206. it that far. It's an amazing he made it

  207. that far. It's kind of shocking really

  208. that he made it that far. If you look at

  209. a map and you see Jericho and you see

  210. Jerusalem,

  211. uh, he made it all the way to Jericho.

  212. What's Jericho? That's the city on the

  213. border

  214. of the promised land.

  215. So his plan was to get out of the

  216. country and sneak off into who knows

  217. where.

  218. And when he so but they overtook

  219. Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And

  220. when they taken him, they brought him up

  221. to Nabu Ganedzar, king of Babylon to

  222. Ribla in the land of Hamas.

  223. I'm not going to get a map out or

  224. anything like that, but Ribblah was 200

  225. miles north of Jerusalem.

  226. It became a staging area just like the

  227. Nazis would stage the Jews when they

  228. want them to go to the camps. This was a

  229. staging area for the Jews to be put into

  230. exile.

  231. He made it all the way to Riblah in the

  232. land of Hoth where he gave judgment upon

  233. him.

  234. So fascinating. By the way, Riiblau is

  235. 65 miles north of Damascus.

  236. So it's 200 miles north of Jerusalem.

  237. It's 65 miles north of Damascus.

  238. Remember where Paul went to kill the

  239. Jews and got saved. So he's he's he he's

  240. up that far.

  241. He's up farther.

  242. Then the king of Babylon slew the sons

  243. of Zedekiah in Ribla before his eyes.

  244. The last thing that King Zedekiah saw

  245. was the slaughtering of his sons.

  246. That was done on purpose. That wasn't by

  247. accident.

  248. Uh

  249. the Babylonians were anything but uh

  250. moderate

  251. and so they this was this was to add to

  252. his pain for causing them all the

  253. trouble

  254. of having to take the city.

  255. You remember

  256. King Zedekiah was actually put in power

  257. by Nebuchadnezzar

  258. because the Babylonians already kind of

  259. controlled the area. And so when he

  260. decided he'd rebel against

  261. Nebuchadnezzar, he's rebelling against

  262. the one that actually put him in power.

  263. So he's asking for it now. He gets it.

  264. So

  265. uh

  266. notice he slew the sons of Zedeki and

  267. Ribblah before his eyes. Also the king

  268. of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah.

  269. Now this is interesting. This is very

  270. interesting.

  271. Often they didn't slay these nobles. In

  272. other places Nebuchadnezzar didn't slay

  273. the nobles. Who are these nobles?

  274. They're the ones that gave Jeremiah such

  275. a hard time.

  276. They're the very ones.

  277. This is what they got.

  278. Tell me God's not a god of justice.

  279. So

  280. in other in other earlier places the

  281. nobles were let go. In this place they

  282. weren't. Moreover, he put out Zedekiah's

  283. eyes and bound him with chains to carry

  284. him to Babylon. So they put his eyes

  285. out. So the last thing he saw was his

  286. sons getting killed and the nobles

  287. getting killed that he was afraid of and

  288. that he count out.

  289. And then he goes to Babylon just like

  290. Ezekiel said

  291. that he would see Babylon. That meant

  292. you'd be there. Not that he would be

  293. able to use his eyes, but he would see

  294. it in the sense of being there.

  295. And the Calaldanss burned the king's

  296. house. There goes Solomon's palace

  297. and the houses of the people with fire

  298. and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

  299. Why' they do that? That's a lot of work.

  300. They did that so that people would be

  301. discouraging from porting up and

  302. rebelling again.

  303. Then Nebuchadnezzar, the cap Nebu

  304. Zaredan, the captain of the guard,

  305. carried away captive into Babylon, the

  306. remnant of the people who remained in

  307. the city and those who fell away, who

  308. fell to him with the rest of the people

  309. who remained. But Nebu Zaredan, the

  310. captain of the guard, left the poor of

  311. the people who had nothing in the land

  312. of Judah and gave them vineyards and

  313. fields at the same time. Anybody who was

  314. an artisian, anybody who had some

  315. technical skills of building or art or

  316. something like that, they took to

  317. Babylon to work on the Babylonian city.

  318. You got a new job. You're going to be

  319. you're going to be decorating Babylon.

  320. You're going to be improving our city.

  321. But regular people with no skills, they

  322. just left. They didn't take them. You're

  323. not worth you're not worth the trouble

  324. of marching you all the way to Babylon.

  325. you will be here and we'll give you

  326. lands and you can feed the Babylonian

  327. armies. It's an occupying army.

  328. Something everybody's got to eat. So

  329. you'll be you'll be doing that. And so

  330. they had a pretty organized. They were

  331. used to taking things places over. So

  332. they knew what to do.

  333. And so that's the picture.

  334. And so

  335. um let me reread in verse 9. Nebu

  336. Zaredan, the captain of the guard,

  337. carried away captive into Babylon, the

  338. remnant of the people remained in the

  339. city, and those who fell away and who

  340. fell to him with the rest of the people

  341. who remained. But Nebu Zaredan, the

  342. captain of the guard, left of the poor

  343. of the people who had nothing in the

  344. land of Judah, and gave them vineyards

  345. and fields at the same time. That way

  346. the Babylonians wouldn't have to grow

  347. their own food to be grown for them and

  348. those people were left there for a

  349. purpose.

  350. Now Nebuadzer, king of Babylon, gave

  351. charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebu

  352. Zaredan, the captain of the guard. This

  353. came from the top.

  354. This came from Nebuchadnezzar himself

  355. to the chief

  356. uh one over all the armies.

  357. Find Jeremiah take care of it.

  358. Now, how did he know about Jeremiah?

  359. No doubt Jeremiah's preaching had caused

  360. some people to do what Jeremiah

  361. constantly said, surrender to the

  362. Babylonians. So no doubt there was a

  363. significant amount of Jews that listened

  364. to Jeremiah and left Jerusalem. And that

  365. was the complaint. Jeremiah is a

  366. traitor. He's undermining us. Is it

  367. discouraging the soldiers that people

  368. are listening and leaving? Well, that's

  369. what we're talking about here. There

  370. were some people that listened. Most did

  371. not. Some did. Now all that makes

  372. Jeremiah look like a traitor

  373. because

  374. the doctrine of the princes was our

  375. country right or wrong.

  376. That was their doctrine.

  377. In other words, just because it's our

  378. country, whatever we do, whatever we

  379. say, you got to be on our side.

  380. No, you don't.

  381. You don't have to be right or wrong.

  382. Yes, there's a loyalty to our countries,

  383. but that doesn't mean we can't stand up

  384. to it when it's wrong.

  385. And uh

  386. you I hope you don't say that about your

  387. family. My family right or wrong. Yeah.

  388. Well, you still love them, but that

  389. doesn't mean you follow them if they

  390. they're doing something evil.

  391. So anyway, some of these people were

  392. listening

  393. and Nebuchadnezzar, they kept up, why

  394. are you coming to us? Well, Jeremiah the

  395. prophet said we had to leave if we

  396. wanted to save our life. And that's what

  397. he's been prophesying, and that's why

  398. we're here.

  399. So, the Babylonians actually are going

  400. to treat Jeremiah better than his own

  401. countrymen.

  402. They're making special effort to take

  403. care of him while his own country made

  404. his life miserable and many wanted to

  405. kill him.

  406. Interesting, isn't it?

  407. And so

  408. verse 13. So Nebu Zaredan, the captain

  409. of the guard sent Nab Mush Oban and

  410. Robsarus and Ngal Razizar and Rob they

  411. had easier names and Rob Mag and all the

  412. king of the Babylonian princes. Even

  413. they sent and took Jeremiah out of the

  414. court of prison.

  415. Now, that was in Jeremiah's favor that

  416. he was in prison.

  417. Isn't Providence interesting?

  418. The fact that he was in prison meant

  419. that he wasn't in favor with the king

  420. that was rebelling against Jer Babylon.

  421. It just confirmed everything everybody

  422. else said.

  423. And so, the Babylonians are looking on

  424. Jeremiah as someone that wasn't

  425. rebelling against them and was actually

  426. telling the other people to surrender.

  427. And this all confirmed it. And when they

  428. find him, he's in prison. Now, this is

  429. this is an amazing stuff.

  430. He was in two different at least two

  431. different prisons, really three, but he

  432. was in prison, then he got thrown in the

  433. um sistern and then he got out of the

  434. sister and put back in another prison.

  435. So, he was uh getting well acquainted

  436. with uh being imprisoned.

  437. And so they finally find him

  438. and they take him and they took Jeremiah

  439. out of the court of the prison and

  440. committed him to Galiah the son of Ahai

  441. the son of Shaan that he should carry

  442. him home. So he dwelt among his people.

  443. Now carry him home meant he went to live

  444. with Galias in Galile's house. Galiah is

  445. going to be the governor of that area

  446. under the Babylonians.

  447. and Jeremiah went to live with him.

  448. And Galileiah was also someone who was

  449. friendly to Jeremiah. And unfortunately,

  450. we'll see Galileiah is going to be

  451. assassinated.

  452. Uh we'll see that later in a couple of

  453. chapters. But for a while, Jeremiah is

  454. changed been exchanged uh for being a

  455. prisoner to living in the Babylonian

  456. governor's choice. uh Babylonian uh uh

  457. Babylonians choice for governor. He's

  458. living with him.

  459. Verse 15. Now the word of the Lord came

  460. to Jeremiah while he was shut up in the

  461. court of the prison, saying, "Go and

  462. speak to Ebed Melik,

  463. the Ethiopian."

  464. Remember him?

  465. Who's Ebed Melik?

  466. >> He went to the king. He went to the king

  467. and wanted the king to get Jeremiah out

  468. of the sister. And then he put rags

  469. under Jeremiah's armpits and got him up.

  470. He stuck his neck out for Jeremiah,

  471. didn't he? He called He told all those

  472. princes here, the guy's a servant. He's

  473. not even a Jew. He He's a He's He's an

  474. African guy. He's E he's the first

  475. Ethiopian unic. Not we we usually think

  476. of the Ethiopian unic. We think of the

  477. one in Acts. Well, this guy was an

  478. Ethiopian uni. He he didn't have any

  479. status,

  480. but he made it his business to go to the

  481. king and criticize the people who had

  482. arrested Jeremiah and put him in the

  483. system to die. Said he's got no food and

  484. the king listened to him.

  485. King Zedekiah was the kind of person

  486. that whatever the last person told

  487. talked to him about that he was on their

  488. side. He was one marshmallow. I'm

  489. telling you, it was every you all

  490. everybody had his ear. He couldn't say

  491. no to anybody except Nebuchadnezzar.

  492. And so, but anyway, Ebed Melik was the

  493. guy that was a real hero here in God's

  494. mind.

  495. And this is kind of important. Ebmed

  496. Melik was a you might say a nobody. not

  497. exactly a nobody because he was a unic

  498. in the house of the of the king to he

  499. had access to the king probably over

  500. some of the king's wives. Uh I wouldn't

  501. want his job if you had to be a unic to

  502. do it. I don't think that would be fun.

  503. But anyway, that's what he was. So he

  504. had his hardships. But verse 16, go and

  505. speak to Abedmel the Ethiopian saying

  506. thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of

  507. Israel. Behold, I will bring my words

  508. upon this city for evil, and not for

  509. good, and they shall be accomplished in

  510. that day before thee, but I'll deliver

  511. thee in that day, says the Lord, and

  512. thou shalt be given in you shall not be

  513. given into the hand of the man of whom

  514. you're afraid, for I'll surely deliver

  515. thee, and thou shalt not fall by the

  516. sword, but thy life shall be for a prize

  517. unto thee, because you put your trust in

  518. me."

  519. That was

  520. that was said to Ebed Melik

  521. and by God himself.

  522. I I love that man. Ebed Melik. He stood

  523. up against the king. He stood up against

  524. the princes. He stood for Jeremiah. He

  525. was a next to a nobody.

  526. And yet he stuck his neck out.

  527. And he did it because of faith.

  528. He had to trust God to go in there and

  529. do that.

  530. Cuz in those days, you didn't just lose

  531. your job, you might lose your head.

  532. So he stuck his neck out a lot, didn't

  533. he? And Jeremiah benefited from that. So

  534. uh and I love that last phrase, you put

  535. your trust in me. This was faith that

  536. was working in through love.

  537. This was saving faith displayed by his

  538. actions.

  539. Now the events of this chapter are some

  540. of the most horrific in Jewish history.

  541. The fall of Jerusalem, the collapse of

  542. the Old Testament theocratic kingdom.

  543. Uh

  544. that kingdom will not return to the

  545. earth till Jesus does.

  546. The Babylon Babylon is the head of gold.

  547. And here's one of the most dramatic

  548. judgments in all the Bible.

  549. You know, the Bible's got some pretty

  550. serious judgments.

  551. Adam and Eve getting kicked out of the

  552. garden. I'd say that was that was a big

  553. one, the fall of Adam.

  554. Another big one was um

  555. another big one was the flood.

  556. That's a big one. Another big one was

  557. the Tower of Babel.

  558. So you get the fall of Adam and the

  559. cursing of the world, the flood, the

  560. destruction of the world, and the

  561. scattering of people into different

  562. languages at the Tower of Babel. Those

  563. were worldwide events.

  564. This

  565. deals with Israel and the capital of the

  566. theocracy.

  567. But now we're in, we've crossed the

  568. line. We are in the times of the

  569. Gentiles.

  570. Gentile rule has now been established.

  571. The temple is gone. The city is burned.

  572. The Jewish theocracy, the mediatorial

  573. kingdom of the Old Testament

  574. has been suspended.

  575. We are still in the times of the

  576. Gentiles

  577. and what happened here has not yet been

  578. undone. It's an amazing moment in

  579. history.

  580. The Jewish rabbis said it was the worst

  581. time in the whole of history. I disagree

  582. with that. I think the fall of man was

  583. that

  584. and the flood was that and the Tower of

  585. Babel was that. I think that exceeded

  586. this just because of the number of

  587. people involved. But this was certainly

  588. a big one.

  589. certainly a big one.

  590. So that mediatorial kingdom

  591. have been going on for 900

  592. years

  593. and it's over

  594. over till Jesus comes.

  595. That kingdom had stood for over nearly

  596. 900 years. So this was very close to

  597. being a worldshattering event or at

  598. least for the Jews

  599. a world shattering event.

  600. You know the collapse of an empire

  601. that's been standing a long time is a

  602. major moment isn't it in history. This

  603. is a collapse of God's kingdom and the

  604. judgment. Turn with me to Jeremiah 52.

  605. Jeremiah 52.

  606. The last chapters of Jeremiah are

  607. prophecies against Babylon.

  608. And you'll see there's quite a few pages

  609. brought to bear on that. But the last

  610. chapter of the book is chapter 52.

    Isaiah 52 chapter mention

  611. Zedekiah was 1 and 20 years old when he

  612. began to reign and he reigned 11 years

  613. in Jerusalem. So he was 21 and he

  614. reigned 11 years. So that means he was

  615. 32

  616. when the nation was taken. Everybody

  617. with me?

  618. >> Little.

  619. >> His sons were little. His mother's name

  620. was Hamuttowal, the daughter of

  621. Jeremiah. That's not the Jeremiah in the

  622. Bible. It's another Jeremiah of Libna.

  623. And he did that which was evil in the

  624. eyes of the Lord according to all that

  625. Jehoakim had done. For through the anger

  626. of the Lord, it came to pass in

  627. Jerusalem and in Judah till he cast them

  628. out from his presence. He cast them out

  629. from his presence. His presence was that

  630. presence in the temple in Jerusalem.

  631. That Zedekiah rebelled against the king

  632. of Babylon.

  633. He didn't want it that way. He wanted to

  634. be independent.

  635. It came to pass in the ninth year of his

  636. reign in the 10th month and the 10th day

  637. of the month that Nebuchadzzer, king of

  638. Babylon, came he and all his armies

  639. against Jerusalem and encamped against

  640. it, built forts against it roundabout.

  641. The city was besieged the 11th year of

  642. Zedekiah. And in the fourth month, in

  643. the ninth day of the month, the famine

  644. was great in the city, so that there was

  645. no bread for the people to eat. And if

  646. you read other accounts, you're shocked

  647. at what they were eating.

  648. Then the city was broken up, and all the

  649. men of war fled, and went forth out of

  650. the city by night, by the way of the

  651. gate between two two walls, which was by

  652. the king's garden. Now the Calaldanss

  653. were by the city roundabout, and they

  654. went by way of the Arabah. But the army,

  655. the Calaldanss pursued after the king,

  656. and overtook Zedek in the plains of

  657. Jericho, and all his army was scattered

  658. from him. Why would you be? You're going

  659. to die for a king like that?

  660. every man for himself.

  661. Then they took the king and carried him

  662. up unto the king of Babylon at Riblah in

  663. the land of Hamoth where he gave

  664. judgment upon him. And the king of

  665. Babylon slew the sons of J Zedekiah

  666. before his eyes. He also slew all the

  667. princes of Judah in Ribblah. Then he put

  668. out the eyes of Zedekiah, the king of

  669. Babylon, bound him in chains, carried

  670. him to Babylon, put him in prison till

  671. the day of his death. So he got a trip

  672. to Babylon as a blind man staying

  673. chained up. Can you imagine that walk?

  674. And he did get to Babylon as God said he

  675. would. Uh but he was in prison for the

  676. rest of his life. A rather ignominous

  677. end.

  678. So verse 12.

  679. But bear with me.

  680. Now in the fifth month, in the 10th day

  681. of the month, which was the 19th year of

  682. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came

  683. Nebu Zaredan, captain of the guard, who

  684. served the king of Babylon,

  685. into Jerusalem, and burned the house of

  686. the Lord.

  687. And the king's house, there goes the

  688. temple, there goes the palace, and all

  689. the houses of Jerusalem. There goes all

  690. the rest of it. And all the houses of

  691. the great men burned with fire.

  692. And all the army of the calaldanss that

  693. were with the captain of the guard broke

  694. down all the walls of Jerusalem

  695. roundabout. Then Nebu Zaredan the

  696. captain of the guard carried away

  697. captive certain of the poor people and

  698. the residue of the people who remained

  699. in the city and those who fell away who

  700. fell to the king of Babylon and the rest

  701. of the multitude. But Nebu Zaran the

  702. captain of the guard left certain poor

  703. of the land for vine dressers and

  704. farmers. Now, we've read that already,

  705. but here we're getting again.

  706. Also, the Now, here this part we haven't

  707. read. What' they do with the temple

  708. stuff? All the temple treasures.

  709. It went all they all went to Babylon.

  710. [clears throat]

  711. Also, the pillars of bronze that were in

  712. the house of the Lord and the bases in

  713. the bronze sea [clears throat] and it

  714. was in the house of the Lord. Calaldians

  715. and broke and carried all the bronze of

  716. the to Babylon, the cauldrons also, and

  717. the shovels and the snuffers and the

  718. bowls and the spoons and all the vessels

  719. of bronze with which they ministered

  720. took they away. Why' they do that?

  721. Because in ancient warfare, it was your

  722. god against my god and my god against

  723. your god. Now my god's got your god

  724. stuff.

  725. That's the way it worked.

  726. that they because they definitely

  727. believe the gods were fighting each

  728. other and uh that if your if you if your

  729. army wins it's because your god win and

  730. if your army loses your god lost. They

  731. didn't understand a holy god that will

  732. not only judge other people but will

  733. deal with his own people in correction.

  734. So they misinterpreted what was going

  735. on.

  736. Now let's think through this whole

  737. business just a little bit.

  738. First, let's look at back in 39. Those

  739. who refused to trust the Lord but

  740. trusted their own wisdom. And

  741. what an example. That's what Zedekiah

  742. did. That's what the princes did. And

  743. they are a good example of people who

  744. will refuse to take God at his word

  745. about the judgment coming. instead trust

  746. in themselves and trust in others.

  747. Very sad.

  748. By the way, it was a horrible ending. I

  749. mean, the people were eating garbage.

  750. They were involved in cannibalism that

  751. they were wasted away as skeletons in

  752. that 18 months siege. I won't even talk

  753. about the rest of it.

  754. How important it is to just trust God.

  755. When he says something, we're to believe

  756. it.

  757. And

  758. not to believe it is to be in big

  759. trouble.

  760. If we look in Jeremiah uh or excuse me,

  761. not Jeremiah, John 3:36, if you'll turn

    John 3:36

  762. in the New Testament, let's just put

  763. this up against what happened. Now,

  764. Ebedmelik believed. He trusted in the

  765. Lord. Uh Baroo believed, Jeremiah

  766. believed, even Galiah uh believed. But I

  767. I in some fashion but cuz his family was

  768. very sympathetic although he did get

  769. assassinated [snorts] but uh that's

  770. completely different than what happened

  771. here in John 3:36.

    John 3:36

  772. What does it say? He that believes on

  773. the Son hath everlasting life and he

  774. that believes not the Son shall not see

  775. life but the wrath of God abides on him.

  776. But think about the wrath of God at the

  777. destruction of Jerusalem. And you don't

  778. want that wrath abiding on you.

  779. But by faith in Christ, that's all gone.

  780. Very solemn. Zedekiah had his

  781. opportunity,

  782. but he didn't take it. He deserted the

  783. people that he doomed.

  784. That to me is really horrible.

  785. They suffered because of his bad

  786. decision. But he wasn't going down with

  787. the ship. He He wasn't a captain that

  788. says, "I'm going to go down with the

  789. ship." That city was destroyed because

  790. of his cowardness, because of his

  791. disobedience, because of his Mr. Facing

  792. both ways. He couldn't make the right

  793. decision. He should have stayed with

  794. them to the end. In my opinion,

  795. he was willing that others suffer for

  796. his decisions, but not him family and

  797. not himself.

  798. J. Thompson said Zedekiah's fate was

  799. nothing short of horrific.

  800. He didn't help himself by fleeing, did

  801. he?

  802. Um,

  803. what a warning. What a serious warning.

  804. Now, Ezekiel 12, if you'll go there,

  805. gives us some details that we don't see

  806. elsewhere. And Ezekiel, remember, was a

  807. prophet in Babylon.

  808. And notice what Ezekiel says.

  809. Ezekiel 12.

  810. And the prince that's among them shall

  811. bear on his shoulder in the twilight

  812. shall go forth, and they'll dig through

  813. the wall to carry out through it, and

  814. he'll cover his face, that he see not

  815. the ground with his eyes. My net also

  816. will I spread upon him. He'll be taken

  817. in my snare and I'll bring him to

  818. Babylon. God says, "I'm behind it." God

  819. was behind these events. It wasn't just

  820. Nebuchadnezzar. I God says, "I'm going

  821. to bring him to Babylon in the land of

  822. the Calaldanss. Yet shall he not see it,

  823. though he die there. He's going there,

  824. but he won't see it." Well, isn't that

  825. what Nebuchadnezzar did? Blind him and

  826. then take him. So, he made it there.

  827. But I'll leave a few men of them from

  828. the sword, from the famine, from the

  829. pestilence, that they may declare all

  830. their abominations among the nations to

  831. which they come, and they'll know that

  832. I'm the Lord. So God was very clear to

  833. Ezekiel who was ministering over there.

  834. He's very clear clear through Jeremiah.

  835. That all happened just like God said.

  836. So we have the fate of those who refuse

  837. to trust the Lord.

  838. But that brings us to the second thing,

  839. the fate of those who did trust.

  840. How about Baroo?

  841. How about Ebid Melik?

  842. How about Jeremiah?

  843. We've already looked at uh Ebedmelik.

  844. Uh he he said, "You trusted in me." God

  845. saw that and will find a baroo. So you

  846. seek great things for yourself, seek

  847. them not, but I'm going to take care of

  848. you. He says that in Jeremiah 45.

  849. So don't be afraid. He says, "I'm going

  850. to take care of you." Well, turn to

  851. Jeremiah 45. I want you to see that one.

  852. It's you might as well see it. So he

  853. took care of Baroo. He took care of

  854. Ebedmelik. And he took care of Jeremiah.

  855. In the the most horrific situation, they

  856. all made it.

  857. Jeremiah survived the battle. He was in

  858. prison. God was protecting him. He had

  859. him underground [laughter]

  860. and and Melik was protected

  861. and Baroo was as well. It's a

  862. fascinating business here. I'm in

  863. Ezekiel. I'm sorry.

  864. need I mean the wrong book

  865. right address number wrong street

  866. Jeremiah 45

  867. the word we'll see this later the word

  868. that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baroo

  869. the son of Niah remember that's

  870. Jeremiah's secretary

  871. who had to endure the burning of

  872. Jeremiah's book in front of him when

  873. he'd written these words in a book of

  874. the mouth of Jeremiah in the fourth year

  875. of Jehookim the son of Josiah king of

  876. Judah saying thus says the Lord Lord

  877. God, Israel to thee, oh Baroo, thou did

  878. say, woe is me now. For the Lord hath

  879. added grief to my sorrow, and I fainted

  880. in my sighing, and find no rest. Thus

  881. says him to him. The Lord said, Thus,

  882. behold, that which I built will I break

  883. down, and that which I planted, I will

  884. pluck up, even this whole land, and

  885. seekest thou great things for thyself.

  886. Seek him not.

  887. For behold, I'll bring evil on all

  888. flesh, says the Lord. But thy life will

  889. I give to thee for a prize in all places

  890. to which you go.

  891. You endured a king burning the book of

  892. Jeremiah right in front of you. You

  893. stood up to him. You rewrote. You did

  894. all that work. You stood up and you

  895. stood with Jeremiah. I know who's on my

  896. side. I know who's making the right

  897. stands. I know who's doing the wrong

  898. things. In your life, I'll give to you

  899. for a prize in all places to which you

  900. go. You can go wherever you want. God

  901. will protect you.

  902. Interesting, isn't it? Now, so we find

  903. interesting things here. Uh God God took

  904. care of Ebedmelik. He took care of

  905. Baroo. He took care of Jeremiah.

  906. Jeremiah was better treated by the

  907. Babylonians than by the Jews.

  908. In fact, he was mistreated by the Jews

  909. his whole life.

  910. And what a shock. The Babylonians

  911. actually

  912. treated him favorably.

  913. Turn to Psalm 91 and we'll close Psalm

  914. 91.

  915. Psalm 91.

  916. >> [clears throat]

  917. >> Now, these were terrible times. The king

  918. didn't know what to do. He didn't have

  919. grace. He didn't have salvation. He was

  920. on his own. And you kind of pity

  921. Zedekiah, right? He was kind of a

  922. pitiful person.

  923. Uh, one writer on Jeremiah and he's

  924. quoted, Philip Reichen quotes him. I

  925. don't know who he is. His name is John

  926. Guest or something. He said, "There's

  927. three kinds of people. those that make

  928. things happen, those who let things

  929. happen, and those who say, "What

  930. happened?"

  931. I think that's funny. And you know, a

  932. lot of people were saying, "What

  933. happened? What happened?" And uh uh but

  934. there were some people that understood

  935. what was going on. They made a stand.

  936. May God help us to be those kind of

  937. people. We've got a God who can take

  938. care of his own. We've got a God that is

  939. worthy of our service and our sacrifice.

  940. And Psalm 91 says, "He who dwells in the

  941. secret place of the most high shall

  942. abide in the shadow

  943. of the Almighty.

  944. Thou will say of the Lord, he's my

  945. refuge and my fortress, my God in whom

  946. I'll trust. Surely he'll deliver thee

  947. from the snare of the fowler, from the

  948. noise and pestilence. He'll cover thee

  949. with his feathers, and under his wings

  950. shall you trust. His truth shall be your

  951. shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be

  952. afraid for terror by night, nor for the

  953. arrow that flies by day, nor for the

  954. pestilence that walks in darkness, nor

  955. for the destruction that waste at

  956. noonday. A thousand will fall by thy

  957. side, 10,000 at thy right hand, but it

  958. will not come near thee. Only with thine

  959. eyes shall you behold and see the reward

  960. of the wicked. Because you've made the

  961. Lord, who is my refuge, even the most

  962. high your habitation.

  963. There shall no evil befall thee. Neither

  964. shall any plague come near thy dwelling.

  965. For he shall give his angels charge over

  966. thee to keep thee in all thy ways.

  967. They'll bear thee in their hands, lest

  968. you dash your foot against the stone. Of

  969. course, ultimately that refers to Jesus.

  970. But even though others in a lesser

  971. sense, they'll tread on the lion and the

  972. adder, the young lion and the serpent

  973. shall be trampled under feet. That's all

  974. poetry. Be because you set his love upon

  975. me. Therefore, I'll deliver him and I'll

  976. set him on high because he knows my

  977. name. He'll call on me and I'll answer

  978. him and I'll be with him in trouble. I

  979. will deliver him and honor him. With

  980. long life will I satisfy him and show

  981. him my salvation. God knows how to keep

  982. us in hard times.

  983. You know, I think a lot of people think

  984. everything's going to be great just a

  985. little bit. We're going to win the war

  986. with Iran and every Maybe.

  987. Maybe.

  988. Maybe not.

  989. Do we know?

  990. Are we sure?

  991. You say, "Well, we we beat the pants off

  992. those people. How could we ever get in

  993. trouble after all our army is done and

  994. our navy is done?"

  995. You never know.

  996. You don't know, do you? And as wicked as

  997. our country has been, who knows what's

  998. what the future's going to bring. But

  999. no, how bad it gets. Even missiles start

1000. flying around and God takes care of his

  1001. own.

1002. And he will take care of us.

1003. And uh he took care of Eban Melik. He

1004. took care of Jeremiah. That doesn't mean

1005. we're automatic to survive an atomic war

1006. or something, but it does mean we will

1007. be taken care of because God is in

  1008. control. He's in control.

  1009. Um,

1010. one writer, his name is Joan, said,

1011. "There must have been something very

1012. special about the quality of obedience

1013. and fidelity exemplified by Ebid Melik

  1014. and Barack

1015. Aruk which singled them out for the

1016. oracles of salvation." And there was. Is

1017. there something singular about you and

1018. me? Are we different than other people?

1019. is our faith in the Lord or no matter

1020. what we try to do the right thing and

1021. stick our neck out for the Lord.

1022. Both of these men stood with Jeremiah

1023. who stood up against everyone and stood

  1024. for the Lord.

1025. You know, in the book of Revelation, the

1026. 144,000 are going to stand up for the

1027. Lord and God protects them. If he didn't

1028. protect them, they wouldn't last.

1029. And the two witnesses are going to stand

1030. up and they're going to be killed. but

  1031. resurrected.

1032. And the apostle Paul persecuted but then

1033. changed sides. And God took care of him

1034. till his work was done. He took care of

1035. John till his work was done. And Peter

1036. till his work was done. We are

1037. invincible till our work is done. We get

1038. over occupied with the trouble in life.

1039. And the greatest thing is these people

1040. were vindicated as well as protected.

1041. They weren't just protected. their

  1042. vindicator.

1043. God vindicated them as he will vindicate

1044. his own when the trumpet sounds. Father,

1045. we thank you for this study in the book

  1046. of Jeremiah. It's a somber passage. It's

1047. just a somber, sad business when the

1048. capital city of the theocracy

1049. is overrun, destroyed, and burned and

  1050. desecrated.

1051. We know the whole world's going to burn

  1052. up someday.

1053. this earth, even this heaven. And the

1054. big question will be who will be who

1055. will be after all that destruction. And

1056. we know what the Bible's answer is. And

1057. we thank thee for so great a salvation.

1058. That is a greater thing than we can even

  1059. imagine.

1060. So may we trust in the Lord with all our

1061. heart. May we lean not to our own

1062. understanding. May in all our ways

1063. acknowledge him and he'll direct our

1064. paths. May that be for our church, for

  1065. our families, for ourselves.

  1066. 174. If you'll stand with us. 1741

  1067. [clears throat]

  1068. >> 174.

1069. under his wings. [singing] I am Lord as

1070. we go from this place. [music]

  1071. [singing]

1072. Loving you more, trusting you more.

1073. May the power of your love [singing]

1074. and the light of your word [music] shine

1075. to sin [singing] darken world as we go

  1076. [music] from this
