  1. You're listening to a message to go from X Church.

  2. We hope this message will light up your day.

  3. I'm going to start off with a story. Alright, you

  4. can put up the picture. Thanks, Wes. Some of you

  5. may already know. Some of you old enough may know

  6. what this is. I'm going to share a little story

  7. that some of you may not have heard of. On

  8. April 14, 1912. This is April 14, 1912. there's a

  9. ship called SS Californian, all right? SS Californian was sailing

  10. and it went into ice. So they basically stopped, right?

  11. Went into ice, just miles from other ships that were around.

  12. They were the first to come across this piece of

  13. ice and they were stuck, right? So at 11 p.m.

  14. on April 14, 1912, There's a wireless operator. So they're

  15. the ones that are manning, basically, communications, right? They're manning communications.

  16. And the wireless operator on the Californian sent a warning

  17. out to basically everywhere. They were sending out and saying,

  18. we are stopped and surrounded by ice. Basically telling every

  19. other ship that is in proximity, careful, or rather, you

  20. may not want to come here yet. Or maybe you

  21. need to divert your course. So Jack Phillips, there's this

  22. guy called Jack Phillips. He's the senior radio operator on

  23. this ship, which is not the California. What is this ship?

  24. The Titanic. So there's this radio operator, Jack Phillips, who

  25. was just only managed to fix up their radio. It

  26. broke down, right? He managed to fix up the radio.

  27. And what happened was there was a backlog of messages

  28. from the passengers. One thing, a lot of different things, right?

  29. And he was stressed out and overwhelmed. Oh my gosh,

  30. I need to answer to every of this message by

  31. the passengers on the ship, right? So there was a

  32. backlog of Telegram, not the app, right? In case you

  33. guys wonder where the telegram comes from, it's not from

  34. the app, okay? The app is named after a prehistoric device.

  35. Back then, they used telegrams to communicate. That was their radio, right?

  36. So he was exhausted. He was buried under all this

  37. backlog of telegrams to be sent or sent by wealthy passengers.

  38. And then suddenly, the radio came through because this ship

  39. Titanic was nearer to SS Californian than it is to

  40. another radio station on shore. So I won't go into

  41. detail the technicalities of how the radio works. Basically, when

  42. the message came to Jack Phillips, it was loud. It

  43. covered all the other messages, right? It was loud. It

  44. came in and he heard it loud and clear, all right?

  45. And this is basically the message from SS Californian, but

  46. he was so overwhelmed that he snapped back at the

  47. radio operator of the Californian and say, DDD. DDD means, basically,

  48. don't talk anymore. Okay, don't talk. It's a very quick message.

  49. It says, stop talking. DDD, keep out, shut up. I'm

  50. working Cape Race. Okay, Cape Race is actually a place

  51. where the station, the radio station is on shore. It's

  52. getting all the telegrams. All right. So, shortly after, The

  53. California operator, I think at that time he was also

  54. changing shift. He didn't hear that message from Jack Phillips.

  55. He went to sleep. Went to sleep. That was 11pm.

  56. At 11.40pm, the Titanic struck the iceberg. And you know

  57. the rest of the story. Jack Phillips, poor guy, he's

  58. now known for this. So overwhelmed by messages from passengers

  59. that he did not hear the most important message. They

  60. would have saved the ship. They would have saved a

  61. lot of passengers from drowning. And probably would not have

  62. given our director Cameron a movie to make. For those

  63. who know your movies. How many of us are so,

  64. sometimes so caught up with the noise of life that

  65. we forget to actually, that we forget that we have

  66. a message, a very important message that we need to

  67. send out to people or we need to receive. And

  68. today I'm going to talk about sharing the gospel. Just

  69. a very quick show of hands. How many of you

  70. here think it's important to share the gospel? How many

  71. of you here? I think it's important. Majority, I'll take

  72. it some of you are shy, not raising your hands.

  73. We know, right? It's important, right? Why is it important?

  74. Have you thought about it? Just throw out your reasons

  75. for you personally. Why is it important? Take some time

  76. to think about it. Anyone? It's the good news, okay? Anymore?

  77. It's Jesus' last commandment. Actually, by the mere fact that

  78. it's Jesus' commandment should be full stop already, right? Oh,

  79. Jesus says so, right? Anymore? Yeah. Yeah. Only Jesus can save, right? Yeah. Yeah. Amen. Yeah.

  80. Only Jesus can save. How many of you are thinking

  81. about people you know that have yet to receive Jesus.

  82. And there may come a day if they don't receive Jesus. Actually,

  83. it's not there may. It will come a day if

  84. they don't receive Jesus that they will never have eternity

  85. with Christ on the other side of life. I don't

  86. know how many of you recognize or think about that often.

  87. I don't think about it enough, I admit.

  88. Right?

  89. Right. But it's important because there are many people out

  90. there who have yet to receive salvation, who have yet

  91. to receive the abundant life that Jesus has for them,

  92. even here on earth. And here we are enjoying it, right?

  93. And I hope that we'll be able to recognize the

  94. importance of sharing the gospel, not just from the point

  95. of Jesus said so, I think that's important, but recognize

  96. your stake in it. Because there are people in your

  97. lives who are not experiencing the freedom you're experiencing. There

  98. are people in your life that cannot surrender their burdens

  99. as we can. When we're overwhelmed, we can just say, God,

  100. you take it. Then we can go to sleep. People

  101. who don't have Jesus can't do that. They carry their burdens,

  102. they carry their heartaches, they carry their guilt, their shame.

  103. all themselves, and to them it's like, I need to

  104. sort this out myself. Right? But if only they knew

  105. or they know that there is Jesus that can help

  106. carry all those things for them and they can be

  107. set free and live a life of freedom. Yeah? So,

  108. I'm going to change up the mood. I know it's

  109. a little bit solemn now, but I'm going to change

  110. it up a bit. My goal by the end of

  111. this message is to help you see that evangelism is

  112. not rocket science. And that it is possible for you. Extrovert,

  113. introvert aside, whether you can speak a language well aside,

  114. I just want to, I hope by the end of this,

  115. you'll be able to see that it is possible. The

  116. title of my message, for those of you taking notes,

  117. is 7.6 Encounters. It's not 6-7, it's 7.6. And You

  118. may be wondering why this title. It will make sense,

  119. so you can just write that down and let that

  120. be at the back of your head. Okay? 7.6 encounters.

  121. So I want to share about how we can share

  122. the gospel. All right? And this is based on my experience, okay?

  123. There may be better ways. You may have a better

  124. way of sharing the gospel. Share it with me, please. Okay?

  125. But what I'm going to share is things that has

  126. worked for me, all right, in helping me share the

  127. good news with those around me. Okay? So there are

  128. four levels. You guys ready for this? Okay, level one.

  129. Be a decent person. Easy, right? So, my first question

  130. to just rephrase this, to let it hit harder is,

  131. do people like you or not? Hello? People like you

  132. or not? Okay, you see, it's not about trying to

  133. get people to like us. That's not what I'm saying.

  134. But the Bible teaches us in Matthew 22, 39, Jesus, again,

  135. one of the commandments of Jesus is to love your

  136. neighbor as yourself. To love your neighbor as yourself. So

  137. do people like us or not? Are we pleasant to

  138. be around with? Do people have a chance to see

  139. the love of God in your life or not? Alright?

  140. I know it's a bit strong, but it's common sense.

  141. People will only sort of listen to you if they

  142. like If they don't like you, at least they respect you.

  143. Correct or not? But do they? Do they like you?

  144. Do they respect you? Right? And I do have to

  145. also put, I have to clarify one thing. Loving doesn't

  146. mean conforming. Okay, there's a line. Loving doesn't mean accepting

  147. everything that everyone else does and following along. You can

  148. agree to disagree. Okay? yet still love. Because we as Christians,

  149. there are things that we ought to do, there are

  150. things that we shouldn't do. We know what is right,

  151. what is wrong. The Holy Spirit helps us to discern.

  152. There's the Word of God, the Bible that teaches us

  153. what we ought to do, what we shouldn't do, that

  154. will break or not break God's heart. And we follow, right?

  155. But that does not mean we cannot love those who

  156. are different from us, who stand in a different position

  157. from us. In fact, Jesus has always loved those that

  158. stand in different positions from him. If you read the scripture,

  159. he's always spending time with people that are in sort

  160. of like opposite values. You realize? So much so that

  161. the religious leaders had to say, how can Jesus spend

  162. time with these people? But Jesus recognized, hey, I gotta

  163. love them. But did Jesus conform to their way of life? Never.

  164. In fact, they conformed to Jesus after they saw that

  165. Jesus' way of life is the way of life. Right? So,

  166. do people like us? That's a very good question to ask.

  167. Especially in today's society where there's a lot of self-preservation

  168. in mind. Just mind our own business. Don't go and

  169. gacha people. I just walk in my lane. But do

  170. we care enough to love those around us? Do we

  171. care enough to be pleasant to those around us? Throughout

  172. this whole message, I'm going to be sharing a lot

  173. of stories. Some of it, you guys will have heard before,

  174. those of us who are here in XBU long enough.

  175. But do bear with me, all right? Do bear with me.

  176. When I was in uni, university, one of the ways,

  177. I was the only Christian in my group of seven people.

  178. I was the first batch in the course that I

  179. was taking my degree in. in film production. There's seven

  180. of us. So we do everything together. In between classes,

  181. we go for snacks together. In between, during lunchtime, we

  182. go for lunch together. It's always together. So I studied

  183. in Sunway University. We would go to Rock Cafe very often.

  184. Rock Cafe is not a cafe. It is like a

  185. hawker center of sorts. We would go there. And then

  186. one thing I would do, and this value I learned

  187. from X Church. X Church is, I learned about generosity. generosity,

  188. even when we don't have a lot, just bless. And

  189. I was a recipient of that. People bless me a lot.

  190. I'm like, wow, this really showed God's generosity. So I

  191. tried to do the same. I'm like, okay, how do

  192. I love my classmates? Okay, one thing I can do,

  193. I can't buy all of them meals, no money. I

  194. can buy them Chinese tea. So I did that, you know.

  195. And then there are some days, some will order coffee

  196. and I'm like, oh, A bit more expensive. Some, I

  197. still remember, would order watermelon juice. Large size. RM7. But

  198. there are some days that I just told myself, you

  199. know what? I'm just going to do it. So lunchtime,

  200. I would pay for the drinks. Right? I remember my

  201. best friend from uni. Some of you may have met

  202. him at my wedding shop. He's one of the groomsmen.

  203. He just looked at me, brother. I pull her. you're

  204. also poor. Come on. We pay for our own. Why

  205. do you pay for us? He really said that. Yeah,

  206. I'm poor. You're also poor. We're all poor. It's okay.

  207. We pay for our own drink. I just say this.

  208. This is what I can do. I bless. A meal,

  209. maybe not yet, but drinks can. That's how I could.

  210. One of the ways I could express my love for

  211. my classmates. Are they open to the gospel? Not really.

  212. Not really. So I can't just outright preach Jesus to them.

  213. But I could love them. I could love them in ways.

  214. Was it costly at times? Yes, it was. It was

  215. costly at times. But again, freely I've received, freely I give.

  216. It's mentioned in Scripture. So that's one thing I would do.

  217. And I hope when I share these stories, I hope

  218. that you will also start thinking, what can you do?

  219. So I'm sharing examples of what you can do. What

  220. I did and maybe what you can do also. All right?

  221. Maybe buying a meal is too much. Buy a drink.

  222. All right? Whether it's your colleagues or whatnot. One day just,

  223. you know, show up with coffee and say, hey, this

  224. is for you. Just thought of getting it. And the

  225. person may go like, why suddenly? But trust me, the

  226. person will be really blessed. Okay? All right? So, yeah. Just...

  227. Take notice also whether the person is lactose intolerant or not.

  228. Just a quick tip before you get iced latte, right?

  229. But yeah, anyways, love. Love in ways that you can.

  230. Think about it. It doesn't have to be rocket science.

  231. You don't have to get expensive stuff. You don't have

  232. to do big things. What are some small ways that

  233. you can show love? And it is through showing love

  234. that people will open up. People will open up and

  235. ask questions like, bro, you're equally poor as me. What

  236. are you doing? Then you can say like, you know,

  237. I've been blessed. God bless you too. Right? And we're

  238. not doing it for performance. I also want to say this.

  239. Don't do it out of performance. Do it really as

  240. a way of wanting to bless and to love. And

  241. I really believe when you do that, God's love will

  242. shine through. It will eventually. It will shine through, right?

  243. Some of you have heard this story before. I was

  244. convicted in my heart throughout my uni years. Remember seven

  245. of us in class, right? That means group assignments are fun.

  246. You don't get to choose who you get to group with.

  247. usually we do all our shoots because film production, right?

  248. We do our assignments all together, seven of us, right?

  249. At most, we break into two groups. How to run

  250. from your classmate? Cannot run. And have you guys had

  251. classmates or colleagues that you go like, I'll never want

  252. to do a project with this person? Wow, a lot

  253. of nods, very fast. Very fast, very fast, right? We

  254. all have that. Even in your current workplace, maybe there's

  255. someone like that. No, no, no. Never, never. Never want

  256. to be in the same project. Never want to be

  257. in the same meeting with this person. I don't want.

  258. And you may have a legitimate reason for that. Maybe

  259. the person is a freeloader. Maybe the person claims credit

  260. that is not his or hers to claim. And you

  261. did the hard work. Right? Maybe the person just don't work. Right?

  262. And you have to pick up the slack. My class

  263. had people like that. In fact, we had someone... that

  264. will shadowbox in the middle of class. You know what's shadowboxing?

  265. Just in thin air. Just like, oh, do that. Okay.

  266. In that person's defense, he is a Muay Thai champion.

  267. I have to say, if six of us gang up

  268. on him, we will die. He will beat us up.

  269. All right? I do have to say it. He is

  270. a Muay Thai champion. But we also recognize he does

  271. have special, he is special needs. Okay. Okay. So he

  272. is in the spectrum. But nobody wants him in the

  273. group assignments. Why? Imagine you do a shoot halfway emotional scene.

  274. He comes up and shadowbox. Actress trying to cry. Real story,

  275. by the way. My assignment. It happened. But I remember this.

  276. I'm on scholarship, so there's a certain result I need

  277. to maintain. So I'm like, better not have him in

  278. my group lah. Better not. Better. Then the Holy Spirit

  279. spoke to me. Steven, you can choose not to be

  280. Christian in class, is it? God. My results, how? Did

  281. I tell you that you can choose who not to love?

  282. I was convicted. You know why I did? Okay lah.

  283. Include him into my assignments lah. Did he magically became

  284. very tame and quiet? No, man. He was still equally chaotic.

  285. But I did that. But let me tell you what

  286. happened after that. That same friend, my best friend, who

  287. told me, Stephen, you are equally poor as me. He

  288. also said, bro, I respect you, bro. Or you put

  289. him in your group. I cannot. Cannot. I cannot. So

  290. he was taking on another group. I was taking on

  291. one group. Yeah, he... I took on this classmate who

  292. nobody wants to work with him. But let me tell

  293. you what happened after that. there was one time he

  294. posted a very nasty remark on facebook this this student

  295. that shadow boxes i was very not at peace with

  296. that statement i could have ignored it i could have

  297. not but i cannot i just cannot i lovingly actually

  298. messaged him and say brother what you posted is not

  299. right and then he went all freedom of speech on

  300. me lah I've got freedom of speech. I can say

  301. whatever I want. People want to respond whatever way is

  302. their problem. I say, bro, it's quite irresponsible that people

  303. get hurt because of what you say, even though you

  304. have freedom of speech. Right? I still think you should

  305. take this down. It's insensitive. And then he said this

  306. to me. I still don't get what you're saying. I

  307. don't understand. Now, honestly, if anybody else were to tell me,

  308. I wouldn't have cared. But because you told me, I

  309. would take it down. He said that. It may not

  310. mean much, but I think he sees that I care

  311. for him. And actually, throughout the three years of degree,

  312. I was the only person he would listen to. And

  313. even the lecturers recognized it. And to get through to him,

  314. they would get me to talk to him. Was it easy? No.

  315. Was it a lot of trouble? Yes. But hey, I

  316. get to love on him. He knows I'm a Christian

  317. at that time. He was a Christian, but came from

  318. a very broken background. Cannot reconcile faith and the brokenness

  319. he was going through. But I really believe and I

  320. hope that I've sown some seeds into his life. And

  321. nobody showed him love. There was at least this one

  322. guy that also bought him sweet tea. Someone who cared enough.

  323. And let me tell you this, the people around can

  324. see you. I never thought about it, but after that,

  325. lecturers came up to me, Steven, you're like a, almost

  326. like a father to this guy. And this lecturer, Muslim.

  327. I can see how you cared for him and you

  328. didn't have to. You did it. Did I do it

  329. intentionally just to get that praise? No. Didn't expect it,

  330. wasn't looking for it. But I really believe God's light

  331. shone through in those moments. And also as an encouragement,

  332. maybe this is something we may want to do a

  333. little bit more, is that when we have pre-believing friends,

  334. and I hope we have, that our circle is not

  335. just Christians. If our circles are only Christian, I think

  336. good to ask questions of like, okay, who can I reach?

  337. Because God has never meant for us to just stay

  338. within the Christian circle. And this is one thing I

  339. start practicing when people ask me, Stephen, how are you doing?

  340. Last time, I would always ask a Christian, right? Things

  341. are great. God is good. Because how can a Christian

  342. go through hard times? Cannot, people have to see that

  343. God is real and God can move. You already hear

  344. how funny this statement is, right? Just earlier, I just said,

  345. life does not get any easier. So I've learned when

  346. people ask me how I'm doing and if I'm really

  347. not doing quite well or if I'm really having a

  348. hard time, I would actually say, wow bro, actually, Not great, huh?

  349. That best friend of mine that I told you about,

  350. when we meet up, he'll ask me, how are you

  351. being a pastor? Nice, right? Bro, I tell you, bro,

  352. being a pastor, not easy, bro. I will share. Not easy,

  353. not easy. Really, there are challenges and all that. But

  354. you know the crazy thing? When a testimony happens, he

  355. gets to see it. Hey, bro, remember last time I

  356. told you I was going through this? Guess what happened?

  357. If our life is all perfect, to other people, where

  358. you got space for testimony? Can be honest. Be real lah.

  359. Be real and just say, but I pray that you

  360. in those moments still see that God is real and

  361. you get to actually share that, hey, I'm going through this,

  362. but it's okay lah. I've been through something like this before.

  363. God has, God came through for me. This time round,

  364. He will come through for me lah. Right? This same brother, uh,

  365. he took Sharon and I's pre-wedding photos. I still remember

  366. at that time, it was this best friend of mine. He,

  367. at that time, the weather was dark. The clouds were

  368. coming in. And the crazy part, I just told him, brother,

  369. you just watch. Last time you seen it, seen it before, right?

  370. I prayed. You guys remember that testimony? I prayed for

  371. the weather during a shoot. I was the only Christian,

  372. remember this, only Christian in class. I prayed, the weather changed.

  373. They mind blown. Until today, they're still talking about that.

  374. Every time we got shoot, I get Stephen to come.

  375. I'm like, dude, I'm not a bomo. But same thing,

  376. because of that, he saw that journey, I had a follow-up,

  377. get to have a follow-up with him because during our

  378. pre-wedding photo shoot, he was a photographer. Close to that,

  379. I said, bro, I pray. Just now you prayed with

  380. us some more. I purposely, we purposely had an opening

  381. prayer before the shoot. He was a photographer. Opening prayer,

  382. we prayed. I said, bro, I pray. You just watch.

  383. We will watch. The weather will change. And then you

  384. know what he said? I'm sure, bro. I'm sure weather

  385. will change. And you know what happened? Weather changed. Only after,

  386. as we were taking the final one or two shots

  387. of our pre-wedding photo shoot, the clouds came in and

  388. it started drizzling. That was, what, five hours later? He

  389. was there to see it. He lived through the testimony.

  390. Can you see that? Allow people to have an opportunity

  391. to live through our testimony. Right? So it's okay to

  392. share when sometimes you're going through a hard time. I

  393. think sometimes we are, maybe Asian culture or being Christian,

  394. we have this thing where, let me share, let me share.

  395. But there is power in sharing and letting people into

  396. your life. I pray that we will do that. Have

  397. more opportunities of that in your conversations as you hang

  398. out with your friends, family, share. If not, they always

  399. think that this guy is always okay. Always okay. But

  400. you know for a fact that it's not true. It's

  401. okay to be vulnerable, right? So number one, be a

  402. decent person. And I really believe when you start being vulnerable,

  403. people will also open up to you. People will not

  404. open up to you because they think you don't understand.

  405. Your life is all perfect. Share, share. Be a decent person.

  406. I pray that people will like you and like me.

  407. To the hotel staffs. Thankfully, no mic now. I cannot hear.

  408. Hotel staffs like you or not? Yeah, not friend. But humans.

  409. People God has asked us to love. When they see you,

  410. do they enthusiastically say hello? Or do they go like,

  411. they just don't? Or do they just say hello out

  412. of obligation? Reflect a bit. These are the nearest to us,

  413. you know, literally at our doorstep every Sunday. It's the

  414. same people, you know. Have you said hello to them?

  415. Do they know you or not in the past few years?

  416. If they don't know you, that's actually quite telling. Sorry, ah.

  417. Can be honest, right? Do they know you or not?

  418. If you were to come in on a weekday, not

  419. on a Sunday, will they recognize you? Same hotel. Good

  420. questions to ask. Good questions to ask. All right? Just

  421. helping us open our mind to how we can love people.

  422. Level one, be a decent person. Level two, be self-aware.

  423. All right? That's number two. Are you giving God a

  424. chance to shine His light through you or are you

  425. just wanting to mind your own business? I touched a

  426. little bit about that. Matthew 5, 14-16 says this, You

  427. are the light of the world. A city that is

  428. set on a hill cannot be hidden, nor do they

  429. light a lamp and put it under a basket, but

  430. on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who

  431. are in the house. Let your light so shine before

  432. men that they may see your good works and glorify

  433. your Father in heaven. We've got to be aware that

  434. there's a light within us. And I've shared a message

  435. on this before. Keep your shop open, if you guys

  436. remember that message. About that time, how I was at

  437. the gym, I really didn't want to care about other people.

  438. I just want to put on my earphones. I was discouraged.

  439. I just want to do my workout and not care

  440. and finish and just go. But God said, you can

  441. choose when to close shop, man, is it? And then

  442. I'm like, no, cannot, cannot. Yeah, this is the gym

  443. I used to go to. And I'm like, okay, God,

  444. you say so. Okay, very quick. I'm just going to

  445. share this testimony really quick. So what happened was, I said, God,

  446. okay lor. And then I saw a guy. I'm like, okay,

  447. that guy, maybe that guy I'll talk to after I

  448. finish my workout. Crazy thing, the guy came to me. Right,

  449. he came to me. It's a long story. I'm going

  450. to cut it short. There are funny parts to it.

  451. I won't share. All right, some of you remember. He's

  452. the one that told me, first thing he says, can

  453. I correct your form? Imagine wanting to love on a guy.

  454. First thing he said, can I correct your form? Okay, anyways.

  455. But anyways, yeah, this is the guy. You may have

  456. seen him before. Some of you, he came to church. Okay. Once, okay?

  457. But basically, what happened was, one, he came, correct my form,

  458. we didn't talk much about that. The following time, two

  459. weeks later, saw each other again, he came, and then

  460. we talked, and then he said this to me, Steven,

  461. can I be honest with you? Actually, the real reason

  462. why I came up to you is this. I don't

  463. know why, I saw you came in, normal, like everyone else,

  464. but suddenly I saw a light coming out of you. Weird.

  465. I saw a light, and I just can't stop, but

  466. come to you and to talk. And right after that,

  467. we were at this mamat downstairs and he was pouring.

  468. his life out to me and I got to pray

  469. for him. And today he's attending church. Not our church,

  470. he got to visit. He wanted to visit just, you know,

  471. to say hi to me. But he has been attending church.

  472. Been going to church. I just want to share this

  473. truth to you that we need to be aware that

  474. there's this light within us that in a Christian setting,

  475. This is like bright lah. That's why we can't tell

  476. the difference. We're used to the light. But people who

  477. don't have the light will recognize light when they see it.

  478. I can't explain this. I've never experienced it because I

  479. grew up in a Christian household. But from what people

  480. tell me, it seems to be real, you know. And

  481. I really believe if I go by timeline, by the

  482. timing of when he saw the light, it was when

  483. I said, okay lah, God, okay lah, I'll keep myself open.

  484. I didn't even do anything, you know. All I did

  485. was keep myself open to the possibility of loving others.

  486. And the light just came through. And from this scripture

  487. that we just read, it seems like we can keep

  488. the light under a basket if we choose to. That

  489. means the light is there, but we can choose to

  490. hide the light. And as Christians, we are very good

  491. at this. So we need to be aware of that.

  492. And just keep your light there. Keep it open, alright?

  493. For people to see. And let me tell you this.

  494. God knows where you're at. That day I was discouraged.

  495. He knew that it's going to take a lot out

  496. of me to go and approach that person. You know

  497. what he did? He brought the person to me. You

  498. see that? God works and all we have to do

  499. is be available. Be aware, self-aware. There is this light

  500. within us that others who don't know Jesus, they don't have.

  501. Can we do that? Just be aware, self-aware that we

  502. have a light within us. And again, disclaimer, being self-aware

  503. doesn't mean being self-conscious. Self-aware, knowing you have a light,

  504. but don't be so self-conscious. Aiyo, but I introvert lah.

  505. I tired lah. Don't let that become a reason someone

  506. doesn't get touched by God's love. I think it's very

  507. sad lah. Yes, is it real, the challenges we have?

  508. Finding it hard to talk? Yes. But let, you wait

  509. out and see which one more important. Then you'll have

  510. to answer already. Okay? Are we okay so far? Yeah.

  511. And yeah, just be open. Yesterday, we were at a

  512. plant shop, Sharon and I, to buy a plant, right?

  513. We went to a plant shop, buy a plant. We

  514. spoke to the owners there. And then after we finished buying,

  515. Sharon just told me, oh, I just spoke and I

  516. shared that actually we are part of a church and

  517. all that. And we'll share, you know, in terms of

  518. your business, if people want to get plants and all that.

  519. And Sharon just made known to the owner that we

  520. are Christian and we're part of church. And I was

  521. also taken aback because I wasn't even thinking about that.

  522. I just come to get blunt. My children are sensitive

  523. enough to share that. Maybe to her, it's just a normal. Maybe, yeah,

  524. I didn't learn from her. But for me, I'm like, wow,

  525. I didn't even think about that and she shared that.

  526. And I pray, I hope, because they know we are

  527. Christian and because point number one, level one, we are

  528. decent people. Maybe, hopefully, a little bit nicer than other people.

  529. They will make some connections. Wow, Christians, huh? Quite nice. Actually,

  530. they're quite pleasant. Can we be open to that? Be self-aware. Right?

  531. Be self-aware. Okay? When God gives us an opportunity, don't

  532. waste it. Be there to shine your light. Are we

  533. doing okay so far? Okay. All right. Okay, I have

  534. to say this. I'm seeing your faces slowly changing as

  535. I share. Don't judge yourself, okay? It's okay. It's okay. Again,

  536. my goal at the end of the day is to

  537. tell you that it's possible. to convince you that can what?

  538. Can be done. Okay? Can be done. All right? So

  539. don't worry. Don't worry. You'll end well. You'll end well.

  540. So level one, be a decent person. Level two, be self-aware.

  541. Level three is this. Be Holy Spirit aware. Be sensitive

  542. and obedient to the Holy Spirit. Now this story, again,

  543. I've shared before, but I want to share again in

  544. the next picture. These are my relatives. My mom's side.

  545. The lady is my mom's older sister. All right? Not

  546. a believer. The whole family, on her side, my mom's side,

  547. not believers, except there's one cousin of mine that came

  548. to know the Lord after my mom prayed for close

  549. to 20 years. That cousin of mine came to know

  550. the Lord. But the rest of her family, not Christian.

  551. So I still remember this. This family is the hardest

  552. towards the gospel. They don't want to, they say, don't

  553. you talk to me about Jesus. And my parents don't dare.

  554. That's how scary it is, huh? My parents can really

  555. share gospel one, but they don't there. This is a

  556. bit hard, they'll say. Right? Can be hostile one, potentially. Right?

  557. But then God put into my heart one day, Stephen,

  558. next week you're going back to Penang, right? Go and

  559. share the gospel. I'm like, my ma, like me? Send

  560. my mum lah. Me? God said, you ah, go ah.

  561. So I was speaking at a camp. So I just

  562. excused myself during one of the afternoons where I'm not

  563. taking a session. And I went. Went to their house

  564. and shared the gospel, shared testimony, all that in Hokkien.

  565. Oh my word. Never done it before. Shared the gospel

  566. in Hokkien. Shared. And what happened was, this cousin of mine,

  567. his sister, not in the picture because she's immobile. She's

  568. physically and a little bit, she had some mental challenges

  569. at that time. Um, As I was sharing, so she

  570. was in a daze. She was taking all medication. So,

  571. not there. Physically there, but head not there. Not there. Suddenly,

  572. when I was sharing halfway, she just became like sober

  573. and looked me straight in the eye. She was sitting

  574. beside me and said, Let me translate that for you.

  575. How do I solve this situation of mine? In that

  576. moment of soberness, she looked me in the eye and

  577. asked that question. And I had the opportunity, that window,

  578. to just share to her and say, every time I pray,

  579. Jesus hears my prayer. When you pray, Jesus will hear

  580. your prayer as well. I had that window because after that,

  581. she went back in the days already. That short little window.

  582. After that, we went out for a meal. Just my

  583. aunt and my cousin. And guess what? In public, busy.

  584. For those from Penang, this is a gelato market. Rocking food,

  585. by the way. Anyways, besides the point. We were eating. Busy, yeah?

  586. And I just asked this question. What is that? Can

  587. I pray for you? Guess what? They said yes. First

  588. time in their life receiving prayer. Eyes closed, head spout.

  589. And I got to pray. Two months later, I received

  590. a call. that my cousin's sister, the one that was

  591. sober for that period to hear about Jesus, died suddenly. Suddenly.

  592. Not expected. She was going through surgery for something else,

  593. something minor. But complications, she died. Last one. But I

  594. thank God for the opportunity. And I really believe it's

  595. God's timing. I really, I don't know if she received

  596. Jesus in the end. I will never know until I

  597. go to heaven. But I know that it was in

  598. God's control. Because the fact that God sent me two

  599. months earlier. And I hope, I can only hope that

  600. because God had a plan for her, that in her

  601. final breath, she shouted Jesus. I hope. I can only hope.

  602. And pray for the best. But man, can you imagine

  603. if I didn't obey God? God, send my mom. Of

  604. all the siblings, you choose this family for me to

  605. share too? The others are milder, milder a bit. But

  606. God knew the timing. I was a fluent in Hokkien.

  607. Did it anyway. And you know the crazy thing? My aunt,

  608. she's not smiling here, but trust me, she was happy.

  609. She actually said this, please come back again. After sharing

  610. the gospel to them, you know, When I shared this

  611. with my mom, she shocked. She was shocked. I did

  612. tell them, pray for me. I'm going to go share

  613. the gospel to your sister. Pray for me. Oh, you're

  614. going to do it? Yeah, pray for me. Okay, we

  615. pray for you. I went back to them. Oh, by

  616. the way, I got to pray for them. You got

  617. to pray for them? Will you be aware of the

  618. Holy Spirit and where He's leading you? And I pray

  619. you won't be resistant It's going to be difficult, yes.

  620. But I pray you won't be resistant. And be open.

  621. Just be open. And know this, when you do it,

  622. it's not by your own strength. You think it's you.

  623. But it's the Holy Spirit within you that's doing the

  624. most work. I just want to tell you this. You

  625. are but a vessel. So you can just relax and

  626. leave the outcome to God. You just go on it.

  627. Go on it. Are you going to be the most

  628. fluent speaker? No. You won't be. But hey, the Holy

  629. Spirit works in ways that We cannot imagine. How would

  630. I have known my cousin sister will pass on two

  631. months later? How would I have known I had a

  632. short window, one sentence I can put in and that's

  633. all she hears? I wouldn't have. All I did was

  634. go lah, obey lah. Right? Let the Holy Spirit do

  635. the rest of the work. Because in Acts chapter 1, 8,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  636. it says this, but you shall receive power when the

  637. Holy Spirit has come upon you. and you shall be

  638. witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea, Samaria, and

  639. to the end of the earth. Do you realize the sequence?

  640. The power of the Holy Spirit shall come upon you,

  641. and you shall be my witnesses. That means it is

  642. by the Spirit's power that we go, not our own strength.

  643. So if you think you can't speak well, good news.

  644. Doesn't matter. Introvert? Good news. Doesn't matter. Scared? Good news

  645. doesn't matter. It's all the Holy Spirit. All you got

  646. to do is go. Obey. Next picture, you will recognize

  647. this person. Who is this? It's Kaven. Right there. I

  648. want to share a very real story that happened. I'm sorry, Kaven,

  649. I didn't ask your permission. This happened maybe a month

  650. plus ago or two months. I lost track of time.

  651. where he came out for prayer for the very first time.

  652. How long ago was that? Two months? Two months ago?

  653. So very recent. For the first time, he came out

  654. in prayer. Wow, very brave. Very brave, right? And at

  655. that time, not a believer, right? Haven't received Jesus. He

  656. came out of prayer, okay? And he said, Pastor Steven,

  657. pray for my job. The boss said they will get

  658. back to me in two, three days. It's been a week.

  659. I have no no response from the boss. I prayed.

  660. And in that moment, the Holy Spirit dropped something in

  661. my heart to prophesy. I was scared. Sorry, Kaven, I'm

  662. telling you this for the first time. But, Holy Spirit

  663. told me, tell Kaven that the boss will respond to

  664. him this week. I'm like, God, more one year, all

  665. these kind of things. People's job, what if? Funny, right?

  666. We will ask God, what if it won't happen when

  667. God says it will happen? Me of little faith. So

  668. I just very boldly, I just tell, Kevin, you will

  669. hear from your boss, this company, within this week. And

  670. when it happens, I remember very clearly what I said.

  671. When it happens, I want you to recognize it's not

  672. a coincidence that it is Jesus. Well, guess what happened?

  673. Sunday night. Sunday night, right? Boss replied. Sunday night, guys.

  674. Not working. For some reason, the boss replied on Sunday night.

  675. He got the job. Recently, yeah, praise God. Recently, there

  676. was a transition as well. Same thing, right? Prayed. Next day, right?

  677. Got a response. And you know, I really believe because

  678. I obeyed. In fear and trembling, guys, it's not easy

  679. to say stuff like that. If it doesn't happen, God.

  680. But when we operate by faith and trust in the

  681. Lord and just be obedient to the Holy Spirit, there

  682. will be power and there will be signs and wonders.

  683. Miracles will take place. It will because it's the Holy Spirit.

  684. And that's, I praise God, I think that sowed a

  685. seed in his heart, probably just confirming a little bit

  686. more that God is real, that He doesn't play-play on

  687. these kind of things. He does what He says. And today,

  688. he has received Jesus. Now he's part of the family.

  689. And of course, there were others that also sowed into

  690. his life that led to his salvation. But are we

  691. sensitive to where the Holy Spirit is leading us? Because

  692. when the Holy Spirit asks us to do something, actually

  693. 99% of the time, we won't be ready for it.

  694. We will be a bit scared. It's like that. But

  695. will you do it? And what's the worst that can happen?

  696. If that didn't happen, Kevin will be like, Pastor, you

  697. told me. Then maybe I can go, yeah, let's continue praying.

  698. Correct or not? That's the worst that can happen, right?

  699. But I'm also saying don't simply throw out prophecies if

  700. you want. Please, ah. Don't simply go to someone, eh,

  701. you're bound to marry this person. Please, ah. Please don't

  702. do things like that. If you catch prophecies like that,

  703. please check with me first. In BU, okay? Please check

  704. with me first. But when the Holy Spirit moves, can

  705. we move with Him? Because He's very eager to move.

  706. We are the ones that are usually hesitant. Okay, level one.

  707. was be a decent person, level two, was be self-aware.

  708. Level three is to be Holy Spirit aware. Level four,

  709. and I'm going to close this soon, is do work.

  710. You realize the first three is be, the fourth is do,

  711. because we got to be first. We got to be

  712. a child of God. We got to learn to be

  713. before we do. All right? So number four, now that

  714. you know, you learn how to be, The doing should follow.

  715. James 2, verse 14-18. I'm going to read this very

    James 2:14–18

  716. quickly to follow along. What does it profit, my brethren,

  717. if someone says he has faith but does not have works?

  718. Can faith save him? Catch that? I'm going to read

  719. that again. What does it profit, my brethren, if someone

  720. says he has faith but does not have works? Can

  721. faith save him? Huh? Faith is not enough to save

  722. a person? Eh, not I say one. Our brother James

  723. say one in Bible. But I want you to catch

  724. the context, okay? Okay? If a brother or sister, verse 15,

  725. if a brother or sister is naked and destitute of

  726. daily food, basically poor, okay? And one of you says

  727. to them, depart in peace. Be warmed and filled. I've

  728. prayed for you. I add my own words there. But

  729. you do not give them the things which are needed

  730. for the body. What does it profit? Thus, also faith

  731. by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

  732. Verse 18. But someone will say, you have faith and

  733. I have works. Show me your faith. This is what

  734. James said. Show me your faith without your works. I

  735. will show you my faith by my works. Here, James

  736. is suggesting, proposing, and may I say this, teaching, that

  737. if you say you have faith, you must have works. Must.

  738. It is a product of faith. You cannot say, I

  739. trust in Jesus, I have faith in Jesus, and not

  740. love people. You cannot say, I love God with all

  741. my heart, mind, soul, and strength, but not love your neighbor.

  742. Does not work that way. If one of it, there

  743. is a disconnect, that means the other is not right really.

  744. So if you are saying you have faith, but there's

  745. no work to show it, that means you actually may

  746. not actually have faith. You catch that? So we need

  747. to have a heart check. I know it's a tough message.

  748. but a hard check whether our faith is producing work. Now,

  749. work will not earn you salvation because the Bible says

  750. also that we are saved by grace through our faith for?

  751. For good works. That is the scripture.

  752. Right?

  753. So friends, it is only natural that we will want

  754. to bless others and love on others and share the

  755. good news. If it doesn't, we have to backtrack a bit.

  756. Where is our faith at? Is it right before God?

  757. Or are we a little bit too confident that we

  758. have faith, but actually we don't have the works as

  759. a fruit? Don't get the order wrong. It's not working

  760. for your salvation or working for your faith. It's that

  761. faith produces work. You see that? You got to get

  762. the order right. Okay? Okay? So I just want to

  763. end by saying this. If you're saying, ah, Pastor Siva,

  764. I've not done it. I've not opened myself to share

  765. the gospel. What do I do? Create opportunities. Create opportunities.

  766. And not just invite. Okay, I've got to say this.

  767. I used to think like that. Hey, I'm going to

  768. invite my friends to church. And my job is done. No.

  769. What we are doing is we are seconding the sharing

  770. of the gospel to the preacher. and hope the preacher

  771. does a good job. If my friend comes to church

  772. and didn't pray the salvation prayer, preacher's fault. Pastor's fault.

  773. Hey friends, we are all called to share the gospel.

  774. Not just the pastor, not just the leaders. Alright? So

  775. it's not just about inviting church. Right? We are running

  776. Alpha now. Alpha is an opportunity, right? Gather friends to

  777. pray for people. Can you do that in your offices?

  778. Are there Christians with you? One lah, maybe one lah.

  779. Pray for one. God revealed to me that one Christian

  780. colleague that maybe lunchtime, we take 10 minutes. Can we

  781. pray for our company? Can we pray for our boss?

  782. I hate my boss lah. But pray lah. Bible says,

  783. pray for your enemies. Right or not? Pray. Are there

  784. needs that your colleagues have? Maybe they're going through a

  785. hard time in their marriage. Can you pray for them?

  786. You can. Low hanging fruit. Low hanging fruit. If no

  787. one in your company is a Christian, then you pray lah.

  788. And let me tell you, that's an opportunity if you

  789. fast and pray. Usually you go lunch with them, right?

  790. Fast and pray lah. They say, huh? kenapa tak makan

  791. puasa you pun puasa our the majority faith colleagues will

  792. have that question lah you can share lah yeah saya

  793. pun ada puasa I also fast why I'm praying for

  794. this friend of ours wow don't you think that's powerful

  795. And you know what? When a miracle happens, wow. Isn't

  796. that powerful? Create space for dialogue and honest talk. Think

  797. of friends that you can ask out and just have

  798. an honest conversation. And let your being of a Christian

  799. do the talking. Don't need to force things on. Just

  800. speak of your life lah. Alright? Two short stories and

  801. we'll close. Next picture. The middle girl here, you may

  802. have seen her before, Si Xian. She goes to Ex Nilai.

  803. She's a teacher. When she was a student in IBG,

  804. there were a group of people, a group of students

  805. that prayed for her. She wasn't a believer then because

  806. she had very bad scoliosis, in constant pain. They just

  807. gathered to pray for her. She wasn't even there, but

  808. they just prayed for her and said, Lord, heal her,

  809. heal her. Pray for her. Every time. Pray, pray, pray.

  810. Guess what? She got healed miraculously of her scoliosis. After that,

  811. she cannot deny God really. And hey, she became a Christian,

  812. accepted Jesus. Today, she's running this small group with the

  813. teachers in her school that she's teaching in to pray

  814. for the students. It all started with just praying for her.

  815. Praying for her. Next one, next picture. This is the

  816. Monash post-grad small group. Again, you may recognize the girl

  817. in the middle, Carissa. This just happened not too long ago.

  818. This guy is Ruben. For the past six months, so

  819. Carissa and the girl next to her, Janice, they both

  820. attend Subang Giant 1330. They started a small group for

  821. the post-grad students just for a space to do devotion

  822. and have dialogue. The rest is not Christian, actually. A

  823. lot of, actually, this picture is not even a full picture.

  824. There have been others that are not Christians coming. And

  825. all she did was just, let me tell you, she's

  826. also scary, want to talk about faith or what. I

  827. don't have all the answers, but she did it. Carissa

  828. did it. What happened? These people came, started becoming quite hungry. Actually,

  829. what's this whole faith thing about? Actually, what's life about?

  830. What's the point of life? And then they started having, wow,

  831. very deep theological stuff. Maybe I also would be scared lah.

  832. They start to ask, how can there be evil in

  833. the world? How can there be so much suffering? Those questions,

  834. popular questions, came out because it was a safe space

  835. for them to express. Three weeks ago, one month already ago,

  836. Reuben accepted Jesus. Praise God. I think God deserves a clap.

  837. From joining this small group to attending homes, to coming

  838. to church, to coming for prayer service, because suddenly he

  839. realized he has this hunger. who want to know this God,

  840. or rather, hunger for truth. And you know, when you

  841. go searching for truth, you will find the truth. He found.

  842. He received Jesus on his own. Said his own salvation

  843. prayer and called Pastor Dr. Daniel Kong. Can I meet

  844. up with you? I just received Jesus. Just happened a

  845. month ago. I share this to say again that it's possible, friends.

  846. Create opportunities. Seek the Lord. What can you do with

  847. what you have, your resources? What can you do? Can

  848. be done. It can be done. Now you must be wondering,

  849. what is the 7.6 encounters? What does that mean? There's

  850. a survey that states that it takes a person an

  851. average of 7.6 encounters. This is the most recent one.

  852. Last time I remember, I said 21, right? Based on

  853. the Billy Graham ministries. Wow, praise God, it's shorter now.

  854. This is a recent one. On average, a person has

  855. to hear the gospel 7.6 times before they receive Jesus.

  856. 7.6.

  857. Last time was 21. Now 7.6. Hallelujah. Right? So if

  858. someone rejects you the first time, don't worry. It still counts.

  859. In the 7.6, you're one out of 7.6. Maybe you

  860. are the 5.6. You're the 6.6. And if you're fortunate enough,

  861. you're the 7.6. They reap the benefit. Maybe you share 7.6.

  862. I don't know how you can quantify statistics. You share

  863. 8 times. Haven't received Jesus. You say this statistic is wrong. No.

  864. Some people that accept Jesus the first time they hear.

  865. So you have to balance out. Correct? So sorry. You

  866. have to share 10 times. It's okay. But every time counts. Alright?

  867. So my encouragement to you is don't be discouraged if

  868. you are rejected. Be one of the 7.6 encounters. Be

  869. part of the statistic of someone coming to know the Lord.

  870. Be that person and one day you go to heaven,

  871. they look at you. They go like, hey, you. And

  872. then you probably go, who are you? Ah, that colleague.

  873. You remember that colleague? You shared to me about Jesus once.

  874. 40 years ago. Whoa. I did it. Yeah, and today

  875. I'm saved. Wouldn't that be amazing? Final story and we close.

  876. Short one. See if you can recognize me or not.

  877. The middle. This one is me. Doesn't look like me, right? Yay.

  878. I look better now, right? Yes. Yeah. This was National Service, BLKN.

  879. I was part of it for three months. You know

  880. something that God asked me to do, which I think

  881. was quite crazy back then? God asked me to do

  882. daily devotions with the Christians there. Daily, ah? No Bible plan.

  883. Just come out with it. God put that in my heart.

  884. I think God was crazy at that time. I didn't

  885. think it was crazy, so maybe I was crazy too.

  886. So I did it. And I led worship. No projector,

  887. no laptop. So how, lyrics how? Write ah. I will

  888. write in four or five pieces of paper per song

  889. to hand out every day. I think quite crazy lah.

  890. Now I think back, you ask me to do now,

  891. I think I'll die ah. I don't know how I

  892. did it. I did it for every day. Every day

  893. I did it. And I was still going through a

  894. difficult time. I was actually quite persecuted during that time.

  895. Religious and racial reasons. You know already. You fill in

  896. the blanks. Really persecuted. Even by one time, a Christian

  897. brother brought a group of people who wanted to beat

  898. me up. Not made up. True story. And then God intervened.

  899. The pelate pelate heard about it. The adults, they came

  900. in the right time before I got beaten up. Because

  901. out of a care for a brother, the brother said

  902. he's insulted. Okay? That happened. Awesome. For the longest time,

  903. I tell you, I came out of National Service thinking, God,

  904. why in the world you send me to this place

  905. to go through all of that? No fruits to show.

  906. I did devotion every day. But guess what? I want

  907. to tell you a little story.

  908. This girl, some of you may recognize her. Girl, girl, girl.

  909. Carmen. You may recognize her from XPJ. Same NS. Let

  910. me tell you this. She was a Buddhist. I came

  911. to X Church 2016. Saw her. I'm like, what are

  912. you doing here? And she looked at me. What are

  913. you doing here? I said, I'm Christian. That's why I'm here.

  914. What are you doing here? Oh, I'm Christian also already.

  915. She joined some of the devotions that I did. I

  916. could be one of the 7.6. Who would have thought

  917. years later I would see her in church saved? This guy...

  918. devout Buddhists. Good friend lah, we're a group of friends.

  919. I didn't go out to share the gospel to these

  920. people because I already very tired ministering to the Christians

  921. at that time. Every day do devotion. So I didn't

  922. even think about sharing the gospel, you know. But they

  923. would tell me, because at night is the, they will

  924. have their class agama. So everyone would go lah, the

  925. Buddhists would go. Some of them don't want to go

  926. to the Buddhists. They say, Stephen, you also look quite fun,

  927. I'm going to sing a song. Can you come or not?

  928. Come ah! Come! Come! Come. So they joined. They come

  929. here and there. I didn't even take count. I didn't

  930. even care. It wasn't even my focus to talk to them.

  931. I was just ministering to the Christian. When I studied

  932. in Sunway, he suddenly dropped me a text. Stephen, I

  933. just want to tell you this. I accepted Jesus. Accepted Jesus.

  934. I didn't even care about him during that time. He

  935. just joined. And I was just being a friend. That's all.

  936. That's all I could do at that time. That was

  937. my capacity. Took him to the Lord. This guy here,

  938. his name, not a Christian yet, but living for his salvation.

  939. Just a few months ago, I shared this with Sharon.

  940. I received a text from him. He congratulated me for

  941. the wedding. He sent a text to me, Stephen, I

  942. always wanted to share with you this, I never got

  943. to share with you. There was one time in National Service,

  944. back then, when you came back from church, at that

  945. time I was being bullied. In that season, you came

  946. back from church on Sunday and told me that you

  947. and the other believers prayed for me. And I remember

  948. until today, I'm still deeply touched by it. This was what,

  949. 13 years ago? 13 years ago. I really believe I've

  950. sown a seed. And you know what? I took my opportunity.

  951. You say this, I say, hey, you should go to

  952. church more. Then you get to experience peace more. And

  953. I just say that. We have that kind of friendship

  954. that can be direct really. I end with this by saying,

  955. you could very well be the one encounterer one of

  956. the 7.6 encounters. You never know. You may go through something.

  957. You're like, why in the world did I have to

  958. go through that? Why in the world did I have

  959. to go through three months of persecution? Because of this, oh?

  960. Worth it or not? Worth it. I'm glad. I'm glad.

  961. Be one of the 7.6 encounters to those around you. Amen.

  962. We hope you've been blessed by this message. For more

  963. information on our church, please visit axechurch.org. We are also

  965. is going to be a good week ahead for you.

  966. God bless.
