Hello and thank you for joining us on the Sierra Bible Church Sermon of the Week.
-
We hope you enjoy this message by Pastor Nate Levering.
-
You have your Bibles.
-
We are going to be in Revelation chapter six and seven.
-
Quick question as we get started.
-
How many of you guys have ever misdiagnosed yourself?
-
Yeah, you got some funny stories to say.
-
Hey, doc, can you fix X, Y, and Z's?
-
Like, hey, pal, that's probably not what you actually want me to fix because that's not what's going on.
-
I had one of those experiences this summer, end up in the ER multiple times.
-
Finally, after talking to multiple doctors, of which are friends, I just went in and said, Hey, this is what I have.
-
Can you fix that?
-
Doctors love that.
-
There was a season in our life, some of you guys have heard the story, and it's pertinent to where John invites us to go with him this morning, I think.
-
Uh, because six months, first six months of marriage, you know, it's all those challenges of figuring life out.
-
But there were some odd physical stuff happening in my life as well.
-
One thing is that I would wake up in the middle of the night soaked through the sheets and the blankets.
-
I was like so hot.
-
We would tell people this, and they're like, yeah, it's probably just because you're used to, you know, you're used to sleeping with someone else in the bed.
-
I um got these like just no, like just in large, now I know what they are, but they were just on my neck and I would share, and people would say, I think you just have a cold.
-
Like, like I do have this cough because I would I would just be talking and I would just kind of cough and I would just kind of cough, and people around me would say, like, just cough, like, get it up.
-
Multiple kinds of symptoms.
-
And I eventually ended up in the doctor here, got a chest scan, ended up at Stanford.
-
A couple days after that, I was getting a PET scan, which is now kind of just ordinary.
-
Some of you guys have had those.
-
And this day, you had to go to the basement of the VA where they would do this kind of gnarly, fill you with radiation so that your body would glow.
-
Mine glowed.
-
It looked like Griswold's house and Christmas vacation.
-
There was like cancer happening all over my body.
-
I just kind of lit it up.
-
What we saw when we looked below the surface of the symptoms was that there was a lot more going on than we could see.
-
Wasn't that I needed a good night's rest because I was exhausted, or I needed lighter sheets on our bed, or a cough drop because I had this cough.
-
There were other issues going on.
-
The story was way bigger than what most of us just by kind of bouncing through my story thought at the time.
-
Because in many ways, we'd made peace with my little cough or my little whatever.
-
But once you get the chance to see, and this is kind of where we find ourselves in the book of Revelation this morning.
-
In fact, that we we've often said that one of the worst best moments in our lives was when the doctors looked at us and they have a team down there, which is fantastic, and said, You're dying of cancer, but there's a cure.
-
And in many ways, this is the message of chapter six and seven in the book of Revelation.
-
If you haven't been with us, uh in chapters four and five, there's this guy by the name of John.
-
He's on an island, he's invited up by God Himself to have a vision of life that he can't see.
-
It's like he gets an X-ray view of things he can't see, things happening in the spiritual realm, things happening in the physical realm, of which we'll look at today.
-
And then he, through these images, and some of them are bizarre, like he's going to invite us into today, wants to help us learn how to orient our own real lives in the midst of the story we find ourselves in.
-
Last week, John is pulled up in the spirit into the throne room.
-
In the throne room, here there's a throne.
-
Ha, throne room, right?
-
So there's a throne.
-
God the Father's on it.
-
He's got a scroll in his hand.
-
No one can open the scroll.
-
On this scroll, it's a little bit like this image that we created for our series.
-
There's one seal on that envelope.
-
On this scroll, there would have been seven seals as John sees it and he begins to help us get our minds around what's actually happening here.
-
What's God trying to tell us?
-
And so it can't be open.
-
John, as we looked at last year, he's like crying like a baby.
-
No one can sort of unfold this scroll.
-
The scroll is the story of God's redemptive hope for the world.
-
It's what God's going to do in the midst of the brokenness we find ourselves.
-
No one can open it.
-
Eventually, he says, you know, I heard someone say, you know, the lion of Judah can do this.
-
And so he looks and he sees, uh, do you remember from last week?
-
He sees a lamb looking like it was slain.
-
This lamb represents for us, this is the we participate together.
-
Okay, we're gonna say together because maybe you missed it.
-
The lamb looking slain is Jesus in the picture.
-
So Jesus comes out, Jesus takes the scroll, and now he's going to break in the in the picture we get in chapter six, these seven seals.
-
Really, we're just gonna look at the sixth.
-
The seventh is kind of interesting, and we'll jump into that next week.
-
The six are interesting too, if you're not familiar with this particular passage.
-
He's going to invite us into viewing the breaking of seals as a picture to begin to understand what it looks like to live in a world where the sort of disease or the evil that comes from our sin has its way and particular sway.
-
So evil is happening.
-
What we're gonna see in these six seals is what evil looks like individually and socially in our world.
-
And we're invited in.
-
We're all living in this world now.
-
But he says, here's how I want you to sort of tune you in.
-
The first four seals, when he breaks those open, he's gonna see colored horses.
-
Now, if you're not familiar with the Bible, like that's just weird, okay?
-
Let's start by saying that.
-
But that's where he's going.
-
Then the next two be a little bit different.
-
The reason these are horses, most every commentator will say that this this is meant to be kind of war language.
-
That is that we don't we don't live or find ourselves in a kind of static world.
-
Evil, some of you know this and feel this, is actually right now waging war against good and vice versa.
-
Listen to what Eugene Peterson has to say as he invites us into this.
-
He says the basic nature of history is warfare.
-
Persons who live by faith live in conflict.
-
History is a long sequence of battles, the forces of good and evil in pitched conflict.
-
Sensitive persons know this, they feel it.
-
Artists, because they picture it, know this.
-
Students of history bear the documentary sources, people of prayer are in the middle of it, even when the guns are silent.
-
The battle rages within the soul.
-
It is fought out in family circles, it is contested between nations.
-
War is the human condition.
-
To be human is to be at war.
-
And what John sees as these seals are broken is the way by which this war is brought into our social context, but also into our lives.
-
And so these are an invitation for us to see what's actually going on.
-
And for me to see that, I'm gonna have to put my glasses on.
-
Here we go.
-
Okay, so chapter six.
-
Let's look at these four horses and then see all five and six together.
-
We'll try and make some sense of this.
-
If it seems bad, that's because it is.
-
Here we go.
-
So, verse one and two.
-
He says this, John, he's seeing this being unraveled in front of him.
-
He says this, I watched as the Lamb, that is, Jesus, open the first of the seven seals.
-
Then I heard one of the four living creatures, also in the throne room, say in a loud voice, like thunder, Come, I looked.
-
Remember, we're invited to see this with him.
-
And there before me was a white horse.
-
Its rider held a bat above, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest together.
-
Who is the white horse and its rider meant to represent?
-
What?
-
Okay, it's not Jesus.
-
So trick question, though.
-
The one who is close to Jesus, the one who looks a lot like Jesus, the one who says to you, I can save you, I can give you hope, I can give you peace, I can give you a future.
-
Yeah, there's a lot of different names.
-
One of the things we learned the first week, it can't mean to us when it didn't mean to them.
-
This is a letter to seven churches.
-
Somebody grabbed me afterwards and says, I know that horse is Islam.
-
And here's what I wanted to say, but I didn't.
-
But I'll say it to you.
-
Islam wasn't around when this letter was sent to these seven churches.
-
Now, it could be represented by Islam in our day, but up until 660 years after there wasn't Islam.
-
Okay.
-
So for us, we have these things.
-
All of us has a white horse with a rider, someone that looks a lot like Jesus with the promise to save, but not the power to follow through, that rides into our lives.
-
A sort of anti, a sort of almost savior.
-
And in the midst of our world, evil will masquerade as one that just might, if you trust it enough, if you give it enough, if you lean in enough, save the white horse.
-
Different than the white horse we'll read about in chapter 19.
-
Different crown, lots in there.
-
Let's keep going.
-
Second horse.
-
Revelation 6, verse 3 and 4.
-
When the lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, Come.
-
Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.
-
Its rider was given, listen to the nuance here, was given power to take peace from the earth.
-
And when peace was gone, they were allowed to make people kill each other.
-
To him was given a large sword.
-
What does this red horse represent in our world, in our lives?
-
Anyone that can come and steal what?
-
Peace.
-
Peace biblically is wholeness.
-
You think of like a vase or something that's together.
-
Sin, Genesis chapter 3, breaks what was what God created as good and whole.
Genesis 3 chapter mention
-
Jesus comes to restore that.
-
Anything that steals our peace is the red horse.
-
And as I was thinking about this, and I was thinking, you know, what are the things that you feel like you're just like, I mean, some of you got to be with me in this.
-
You feel like you're just like walking with the Lord, things are good.
-
Like, man, it doesn't matter if it's 110 degrees out and it's whatever, or it's like freezing, you're just like life is good.
-
God has made me whole, He saved me, He showed me like for whatever reason, and then all of a sudden, sometimes that fast, that peace can turn to anxiety, it can turn to anger, it can turn to fear.
-
Anything that causes that turn that is given permission on earth to steal peace is the red horse.
-
And we all have these things.
-
I was thinking about how quickly that can happen in my own life, and I was like almost embarrassed to say how quickly life can feel whole and then fall off into chaos, alienation from others, discord.
-
These are what the red horse sows.
-
The third horse is the black horse.
-
We're told uh that this is the horse uh that that brings to us and society this idea of scarcity and want.
-
The black horse says to us at our deepest places, you're not enough.
-
You would be happy if.
-
And it just kind of creates that discomfort.
-
It's it's like what the serpent said in Genesis chapter 3 when he came, said, Did God really say you couldn't do that?
Genesis 3 chapter mention
-
Like maybe you should reframe because he's keeping something from you.
-
There's more.
-
This is the black horse.
-
Look at the the text, it's kind of interesting how this is um in the scriptures.
-
He says, I look, therefore, before me was a black horse.
-
Its rider was holding, picture this, a scale in each hand.
-
What he goes on to say is that the black horse is allowed in our world to upcharge the things we need, but to sale price the things we don't.
-
He says, you know, it costs you a whole day's wage to buy wheat and barley, the stuff you need.
-
But you want a bottle of wine, it's on tap in the welcome center.
-
Go get as much as you want.
-
And there's this idea, isn't there, in our world that the that we're it's camouflage is this idea that the very thing you need we can begin to think is impossible to actually get.
-
So let's just drink ourselves, let's game ourselves, let's vacation ourselves as if these are the things that is the black horse.
-
The fourth horse, the most beautiful horse, is the pale green horse.
-
Also known as the horse that looks like snot.
-
Or if snot's too gross for you on a Sunday morning, it's kind of like guacamole.
-
Okay, you know, you got I like the taste of avocados and guacamole, but I just look at it and I think, I think that just like came out of the Kleenex of the guy next.
-
Like it just doesn't look like, but but the pale green horse, this is actually the color, it's the color of death.
-
And we're told in the scriptures that it's its rider's name is death.
-
They were given power over a fourth of the earth, the pale green horse, to kill by sword, famine, plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.
-
And I would probably be surprised if we couldn't go person to person to person in this entire room.
-
And as we began to share our stories with each other, we would begin to say that was the pale horse.
-
That was the power of evil stirred into our lives.
-
You know, I'll never forget the day when we were at Stanford and I was getting treatment and we had some time, and so we wandered down the hallway to where children are getting chemo.
-
If you've ever lost a child before it was born, it's the pale horse.
-
Evil given rain in such a way where death comes where it shouldn't.
-
This is the pale horse.
-
The sixth, or the excuse me, the fifth and the sixth seal are a little bit different.
-
They don't come by white horse, red horse, black horse, pale horse.
-
They they come by way of these pictures specifically of things that are allowed to happen to God's people, like that almost like uniquely happen to them, and they happen in different kinds of ways.
-
The the sixth, the fifth seal uh is this idea that that bad things happen to God's people.
-
And maybe you've thought this before in your own life.
-
Like, I've been trusting God, I've been like giving and serving and reading my Bible, and why did I, what happened to me?
-
That God, shouldn't you protect your people?
-
And yet, evil in this season is given is given its sway.
-
This for them was a place of intense persecution.
-
And the picture here is he's drawn up and he doesn't see a horse coming at him.
-
He actually sees an altar and he sees the people of God around the altar, and they're crying out to God, like, because it doesn't make sense to them.
-
It's like, man, if you're victorious, why this?
-
And so they ask this question in the scriptures.
-
They say, How long, sovereign Lord, holy and true, like we know you can do this until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood.
-
Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer.
-
And it's in the midst you get this sense of God saying, I have a cure, and I'm working my plan.
-
You're gonna have to wait.
-
There will be this thing, you've got to just learn to wait.
-
The sixth seal, the last in our line, comes by this kind of fascinating language.
-
And this language you can actually trace through some of Jesus' language, but also the Old Testament.
-
And it always always starts with this there was a great earthquake.
-
When commentators read this, most of them, there's a lot of confusion over some of this, would say that this isn't like a physical earthquake when it's followed by this kind of language.
-
This is the kind of thing where you say, you know, I always thought life was this way, but it got flipped upside down.
-
It's those things that happen in culture in our world that we think, I'll never view things the same after that.
-
The earth, the foundation, we we can look back in our day and say, you know, that this seal, this evil is something like a COVID or a 9-11, or, you know, we can look back into the world wars and think that, you know, in some ways the world has shaken and things will never be the same.
-
At times, that is evil having its way.
-
Now, we are meant to see these six things not as like historical by way of a timeline, but actually as threads which run through human history, that for whatever reason Jesus allows to have sway, whereby he eventually will purpose to bring evil to an end.
-
That is the story.
-
And what we'll see in a few minutes is that we are written in.
-
What I shared with first service that I'm gonna leave out this morning, is that all of this, in fact, these six threads are walked through in the book of Matthew, chapter 24.
Matthew 24 chapter mention
-
If you have time, I'd invite you to look at Matthew 24.
-
Matthew 24 is the place where the disciples, like they're like, Jesus, tell us about the end times.
-
Tell us about when your kingdom's gonna come on earth in full, tell us about when you're gonna reign supreme as the victorious one.
-
He's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
-
You're gonna enter into a time.
-
And then what Jesus does is he says, Hey, imitations of me are coming.
-
Be on your guard.
-
And then he walks through each of these four horses and he says, These are the beginning of birth pains.
-
This is what life will be like as you are invited into it.
-
Let's look together at Revelation chapter 6, verse 15.
-
All six of these are meant for us to feel a particular way, to resonate from a particular perspective.
-
That brings us to chapter six, verse 15.
-
Then, see if you can find yourself in this list, the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else.
-
He starts with this list of people that sort of have been able to view themselves or their decisions as their own savior, both slave and free, all together did what?
-
They hid in caves and among the rocks and the mountains.
-
They called to the mountains and the rocks, fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb.
-
For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?
-
That last line is where these six seals are meant to eventually place our hearts.
-
Jesus will say it this way in that section in chapter.
-
24.
-
He says, it is to the one who stands firm to the end that will be saved.
-
The question then, and maybe your uh version is a little bit different than mine, and I actually like that a little bit more, but at the end of that section of chapter six, it says this who can stand?
-
If indeed evil is given its run, if indeed these horses with riders, you know, or can can distract us, can pull the affections of our heart, can can promise us without the power to see who can stand?
-
Chapter seven is the answer.
-
Chapter seven is God's answer.
-
So there's this big buildup, and then in chapter seven, and chapter seven starts in a super interesting way, it finishes in an also interesting way, but let's try and walk through this together because it's a bit of a challenge.
-
But chapter seven, in trying to answer this question, who can stand, says this.
-
And I want us to can kind of point us down to verses three and four.
-
This one within the throne room says these words on behalf of God do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.
-
Then John says, I heard the number of those who were sealed.
-
It's 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel.
-
Now, is this an exact number?
-
Like they're actually 144,000 that are sealed, not 144,000 in one or 130,000.
-
I always thought like if it was a different number, it'd be weird to.
-
This is a number, like many of the numbers that we've been working with already in the past chapters, that talks about the wholeness of God's people.
-
It talks about every human being that's found salvation in Jesus alone.
-
This is all of God's people.
-
And so we then see this played out that God puts a hedge around a particular group of people.
-
There are some that will stand.
-
He says, push back, evil will not have its way with these.
-
I will protect them.
-
Now let's skip down to verses nine and ten.
-
And I actually pulled it on our screens off of the message because I love how Eugene Peterson picks up chapter six's question: Who can stand?
-
We see it a bit in the NIV.
-
He's a little stronger in the message.
-
He says, This, I looked again and I saw.
-
Now, this is already something that maybe we're familiar with.
-
Even last week, John heard that the lion of Judah was here.
-
When he saw, what did he see?
-
The lamb that looked like he was slain.
-
Here he hears, right?
-
That was what we just looked at.
-
He hears.
-
There's 144,000, God's sealing a particular group of people.
-
Here he says, I looked again.
-
Now he's not hearing, he sees.
-
What does he see?
-
Now the language here is like a massive crowd, too huge.
-
It's like a it's like a great multitude, right?
-
So if you say, I saw a multitude, that's a lot of people.
-
If you say, I saw a great multitude, that's like a lot of a lot of people.
-
And that's what he sees, more than you can count.
-
He says, Everyone was there, all nations, all tribes, all races, and languages.
-
And they were what?
-
Okay, we're gonna do this part together.
-
And they were standing.
-
He says, There's hope.
-
There are some that will stand.
-
Even in the midst of all of this, even when the horses ride and they're gonna ride, even when persecution comes and persecution is gonna come, even when life is taken, some will stand.
-
Verse 10.
-
He says this about those that stand, they're dressed in white robes and waving palm branches.
-
This idea of waving a palm branch is kind of an interesting thing.
-
How many of you guys have waved a palm branch in the last week?
-
Oh, you did?
-
Yeah, good.
-
Yeah, some of us do that.
-
Well, what are they saying?
-
These are people who said it's Jesus is king, Jesus is victor.
-
This lamb is the one that I'm putting the in the hope of my salvation.
-
It's his victory into which I find victory.
-
This was common for them because they would have picked up a anybody with a palm branch is saying, That's my king.
-
If the Caesar walks through, you grab a palm branch.
-
This is what you're saying.
-
He is my savior, he is my Lord.
-
When the lamb comes through, there will be some, those that stand through all of the evil life can throw at them, standing before the throne, waving palm branches and the lamb and heartily singing.
-
This is another one of those weird word combinations, because they're like almost screaming, but it's also singing, which is probably what Brian says when he hears me sing, because it doesn't always sound like singing, but they're just all caught up in it.
-
What are they singing?
-
Heartily, crying at the top of their lungs, if you look in the NIV.
-
Salvation to our God on his throne.
-
They're pointed, as we looked at last week, at the throne, salvation to the Lamb.
-
It is in him.
-
He is the one that allows those that put their faith in him to stand in the midst of all of that evil.
-
Listen to what Eugene Peterson says.
-
I love this.
-
Eugene Peterson says this.
-
He says, These people are not only secure, they are exuberant.
-
This is a curious but wholly biblical phenomenon.
-
Listen to what he says.
-
The most frightening representations of evil, chapter six, are set alongside extravagant praise.
-
Chapter seven.
-
Christians sing, they sing in the desert, they sing in the night, they sing in prison, they sing in the storm.
-
Any evil, no matter how fearsome, is exposed as weak and pedantic before such songs.
-
This is the picture of Revelation chapter 7.
Revelation 7 chapter mention
-
This is the invitation for us to stand, not on our own, but to stand with the king.
-
What is he saying?
-
Let's wrap this up in some um fill-ins here.
-
He says this the church will stand secure in Christ's victory.
-
This isn't just for individuals, this is a church.
-
He says, the church is actually going to stand.
-
You remember when Jesus sort of began talking about the church?
-
He called his ecclesia, his gathering of those in his name.
-
He says, I'm going to build my ecclesia, my gathering, and the what?
-
The gates of Hades, which will come against it, will not overcome it.
-
My church will stand, not because they're super smart, not because they're really like moralistic, but because they put their faith in Jesus alone.
-
The church won't just stand.
-
Some of you will love this next one.
-
The church will sing.
-
Some of you are like, I ain't singing.
-
Guess what?
-
If you stand, you will one day sing.
-
It may not be here and fine.
-
But there will be a day we're seeing over and over when you're gonna find your singer and you're gonna let it rip.
-
Because you're gonna be face to face with the one who pulled you out of all that evil.
-
Because of the work that he did on the cross.
-
And we see these pictures in the New Testament church, and I hope this is true of us in different ways, right?
-
And when I was reading that verse about singing in the sick and singing in prison and singing, I thought of so many of your own faces in life that we've been through.
-
When we've whether it be funerals or struggles or job loss, or we've said, you know what, but in all of that that's coming against us, we'll we'll figure out how to sing.
-
Because this is what we do.
-
We lean in to the hope that is here and is for us, celebrating Christ's victory for us.
-
And then lastly, and we see this as we play out, if you're to read the rest of chapter seven, which we won't do together, the church will serve.
-
The church will serve, declaring Christ's victory.
-
Maybe you, like me, read through chapter six and you're kind of like, what's the point?
-
Why does Jesus feel like it's valuable for us to have in descriptive form an analysis of the evil in our world?
-
Like I kind of get it.
-
In fact, I get some of it on me.
-
In fact, I see some of it in me.
-
Let me try and just in the next couple of moments hope you see a why.
-
And it's around this idea that the church will serve.
-
Think about the white horse.
-
What does it look like for us to serve our king in light of the white horse?
-
It means that we at Sierra Bible Church and other gospel-centered churches in our community and world must preach Jesus Christ alone.
-
That's why we've said we have a mission.
-
You know it?
-
It's to know Jesus and to make him known.
-
It's to know him, to know the authentic version of who he is.
-
Not just so that one day when we see him, he says, Oh, yeah, I knew you too.
-
But because in this world, a church is supposed to be a light.
-
And in order for us to be a light, we stand on the promise that salvation is in what?
-
Jesus alone.
-
And we try not to get distracted in a thousand different ways, and we try and lift up the person of Jesus.
-
This is what we say.
-
Salvation is in him.
-
Think of that red horse.
-
What do we do in light of the red horse?
-
Jesus says this.
-
He says, I've said these things so that you said these things to you, that in me you will have what?
-
Peace.
-
What's the red horse come to take?
-
Your peace.
-
Listen to how Jesus plays this out.
-
In this world, you will have tribulation.
-
So same word we read in Matthew chapter 24 and Revelation 7.
Matthew 24 chapter mention
-
Tribulation, it's the trials, it's the challenges of these seals.
-
He says, But take heart, I've overcome the world.
-
And so we learn practices of forgiveness.
-
We we, whenever it's in our Paul says, whenever it's in our scope, we do what?
-
We make peace.
-
It matters.
-
And so, in as much as we can, we become people of peace.
-
What about that third horse?
-
The, do you remember his color?
-
Her color?
-
Black.
-
The black horse.
-
The black horse who comes and says, Hey, there's not enough for everybody, so you better get yours.
-
What do we do?
-
The gospel invitation is to be generous in the face of scarcity.
-
It's to be hospitable when you think there's not enough.
-
It's share.
-
It's loving the way Jesus invites us to love in a way that is generous and hospitable.
-
And so, what does it look like for us as the church to serve Him in a world that's gone sideways to be light and salt?
-
It looks like generosity toward those around us.
-
It looks like hospitality to those on the outside.
-
Lastly, the pale horse.
-
What do we do?
-
This is real life, isn't it?
-
Some of you guys are facing some of this right now.
-
Maybe you even have a text message of someone who's reached out to you because someone's health is failing.
-
Because death has come.
-
Friends, what do we do when the pale horse rides in?
-
We pray like crazy, unapologetically, that the Jesus can heal all things, and that's his desire.
-
So we pray for healing around here.
-
We invite you, if you're walking through this like, man, the pale horse is like running me over.
-
Come and talk to our leadership.
-
We would love to surround you.
-
We would love to put oil on you.
-
We'd love to pray for you.
-
And then we do what the gospel invites us to do.
-
We let God do what he's gonna do.
-
And sometimes it doesn't make sense to us, but we are unashamed and unshaken on the foundation of the goodness of God, even in the midst of these times where it feels like, man, evil one another one.
-
Why?
-
Because chapter 7 says there's hope.
-
Some will stand.
-
And eventually we're moving right towards chapters 20 and 20, or 21 and 22, when Jesus heals all things and we live for that hope.
-
As I was thinking about this message, specifically the picture of those that picked up a palm branch, saw the lamb of God, and waved it.
-
I thought, I wonder if there's anyone here that if you're honest, you've never said before God and others, I want Jesus to save my life.
-
I want to be one that stands when the Lamb appears with a palm branch that says, My victory is because of his victory.
-
And I just want to invite you that maybe today was the first, and it's kind of strange, right?
-
All these horses and seals and visions, but maybe this morning evil made sense, and you see it more than just something that's out there, but you see it as a reflection of what's in here.
-
And that you would respond to the invitation to put your faith in Jesus and to let Him sing over you, forgiven, beloved.
-
So I just want to invite you.
-
Is there anybody in here that would just raise their hand that said, I've never put my faith in Jesus?
-
I wouldn't be counted upon those with the palm branches.
-
I've kept him at bay, but this morning's my morning.
-
Would you raise your hand?
-
Is there anybody in you who's like, I've never done that before, but I want to put my faith in Jesus.
-
In light of evil, I want to stand with him.
-
Join those in first service?
-
Anybody?
-
It was awesome.
-
Not that some of us have done that.
-
We've taken that step.
-
If you've never done that, and maybe you're still wrestling with who God is and what it would look like for you to declare victory over the sin in your own life because of what Jesus did on the cross.
-
I just encourage you that we have, again, these silly connection cards, but it's a way for us to connect with you.
-
There's a welcome saying we would love to help you see more clearly that salvation is in Jesus alone.
-
All of us need Him.
-
Let's pray.
-
God, thank you.
-
Thank you that you declare over us peace, forgiveness, hope, goodness, love.
-
Thanks that that even in this world where all kinds of evil, all the sort of symptoms of sin are given rain.
-
God, that you, because of what you've done, because your blood covers our sin, allow us to sing as saved children of the king.
-
That we can respond as those that know you.
-
We can stand in the midst of this world, inviting others to put their faith in you.
-
God, may you find us a community serving together in all of these places where evil has its way.
-
May we be your light and your hope.
-
God, we love you and we thank you and we pray these things, and you're amazing.
-
Thanks so much for joining us, church.
-
We hope that you enjoyed this message.
