  1. Great. Okay. Well, welcome back, friends, to our class on the Holy Spirit.

  2. So, where have we been? For the past three weeks, if you've been with us, we've been considering

  3. ! The person of the Holy Spirit, who He is. We looked at the Old Testament, then we looked

  4. at the New Testament, and what we saw in Scripture is that the Holy Spirit is a distinct, divine

  5. person alongside God the Father and God the Son. And then last week, we considered the development

  6. of this biblical teaching, this doctrine in church history. And we saw how the church summed up what

  7. the Bible teaches about the Holy Spirit, the person of the Holy Spirit, in the words of the Nicene

  8. Constantinopolitan Creed of 381, which says this, we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver

  9. of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and

  10. glorified. Then, the Creed adds this, that the Holy Spirit has spoken through the prophets.

  11. And with that phrase, we turn to the second big theme of our course, which is the work of the Holy

  12. Spirit. We've seen who the Holy Spirit is. Now, we're going to be considering what the Holy Spirit

  13. does. What is his particular work among the persons of the Trinity? Now, a few weeks ago,

  14. when we considered the person of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, we also touched on his work

  15. in the Old Testament. So, we won't spend a lot of time in the remainder of our class specifically

  16. looking at the work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. Rather, we're going to be considering

  17. especially the work of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament, under the New Covenant. Now that Christ

  18. has come in fulfillment of the Old Testament promises, what now is the Holy Spirit's work

  19. among us? So, that's what we're going to be considering over the next number of weeks,

  20. for as long as this class goes, till probably a little bit before Thanksgiving.

  21. Now, the first thing, then, we have to consider when looking at the Holy Spirit's work in the New

  22. Testament is the Holy Spirit's work in the life of Jesus himself. You know, we often kind of skip over

  23. this. You know, we often skip over a lot about the Holy Spirit. We just want to get, like, tell me

  24. about them spiritual gifts, right? And we're going to get to that. But we have to start here.

  25. It is unmistakable that the life of Jesus during his earthly ministry was a life completely saturated

  26. with the Spirit at every moment. From conception to resurrection, Jesus was the man of the Holy Spirit.

  27. And remember, this is what the Old Testament promised. Consider Isaiah 11, 1 through 2.

  28. In Isaiah 11, verse 1, it says,

    Isaiah 11:1

  29. There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

  30. Now, the stump of Jesse was, of course, the house of David. So, Isaiah here is talking about the Messiah

  31. who's going to come from David's lineage. And what will the Messiah be like?

  32. Verse 2 says,

  33. What's that, Elizabeth?

  34. The seven spirits.

  35. Yes, yes! Yes, that's exactly right. Christ will be the one who has the Spirit in full measure.

  36. In Isaiah, as Elizabeth said, in Isaiah 11, 2, speaks of the Spirit in a sevenfold manner, right?

  37. It's the Spirit of the Lord, of wisdom, of understanding, of counsel, of might, of knowledge, of the fear of the Lord.

  38. Seven is the Hebrew number of what? Completion, perfection, totality.

  39. The Christ who will come will possess the Spirit in fullness and perfection,

  40. and that's exactly what the New Testament tells us about Jesus.

  41. His conception, life, death, and resurrection are all done in the fullness of God the Holy Spirit.

  42. So, let's look at a couple passages where we see that.

  43. Now, we'll just go through these pretty quickly.

  44. First, consider Jesus' conception, right?

  45. This is Matthew 1, 18 through 21.

  46. Now, the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  47. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together,

  48. she was found to be with a child from the Holy Spirit.

  49. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame,

  50. resolved to divorce her quietly.

  51. But as he considered these things, behold,

  52. an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,

  53. Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife,

  54. for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

  55. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus,

  56. for he will save his people from their sins.

  57. Then, of course, Luke 1, 34 and 35 affirms the same thing,

  58. jumping right into the middle of the narrative of the Annunciation.

  59. And Mary said to the angel,

  60. How will this be, since I am a virgin?

  61. And the angel answered her,

  62. The Holy Spirit will come upon you.

  63. And the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

  64. Therefore, the child to be born will be called Holy, the Son of God.

  65. So, Jesus' conception.

  66. What about Jesus' life?

  67. Well, what about most of the Gospels,

  68. all the Gospels contain a narrative about Jesus' baptism

  69. when his public ministry begins, right?

  70. We'll take some passages from Luke.

  71. Luke 3, 21 through 22.

  72. Now, when all the people were baptized by John the Baptist,

  73. and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying,

  74. the heavens were opened,

  75. and the Holy Spirit descended on him

  76. in bodily form like a dove,

  77. and a voice came from heaven,

  78. You are my beloved Son.

  79. With you I am well pleased.

  80. So, Jesus' public ministry starts,

  81. is kind of inaugurated with the Holy Spirit coming on him in power.

  82. Listen to Luke 4, 14 through 15.

  83. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee

  84. after the Spirit had led him into the wilderness

  85. for the period of testing, right?

  86. Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee,

  87. and a report about him went through all the surrounding country,

  88. and he taught in their synagogues,

  89. being glorified by all.

  90. And he came to Nazareth, where he'd been brought up.

  91. And as was his custom,

  92. he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day,

  93. and he stood up to read.

  94. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him.

  95. And he unrolled the scroll

  96. and found the place where it was written,

  97. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

  98. because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

  99. He sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives,

  100. and recovering of sight to the blind,

  101. to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

  102. to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

  103. So our Lord's life was a life full of the Holy Spirit.

  104. What about his death?

  105. Well, listen to what the author of Hebrews has to say.

  106. In Hebrews 9, 13 through 14,

  107. it says,

  108. If the blood of goats and bulls

  109. and the sprinkling of defiled persons

  110. with the ashes of a heifer sanctify

  111. for the purification of the flesh,

  112. how much more will the blood of Christ,

  113. who through the eternal Spirit

  114. offered himself without blemish to God,

  115. purify our conscience from dead works

  116. to serve the living God?

  117. You see, even Christ's journey to his passion,

  118. to the cross,

  119. was something done in the fullness of the Spirit.

  120. It is through the eternal Spirit

  121. that he offers himself up

  122. without blemish to God.

  123. And, of course, his resurrection.

  124. Here's how Paul starts his letter to the Romans.

  125. He says,

  126. Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus,

  127. called to be an apostle,

  128. set apart for the gospel of God,

  129. which God promised beforehand

  130. through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures,

  131. concerning his Son,

  132. who was descended from David according to the flesh,

  133. and was declared to be the Son of God in power,

  134. according to the Spirit of holiness,

  135. that is the Holy Spirit,

  136. by his resurrection from the dead,

  137. Jesus Christ our Lord.

  138. So Christ not only laid down his life

  139. through the power and working of the Holy Spirit,

  140. but was raised through the power

  141. and working of the Holy Spirit.

  142. Okay.

  143. So the entire earthly ministry of Jesus

  144. was done in and through the power of the Spirit.

  145. When God the Son took on flesh for us

  146. and for our salvation,

  147. the Holy Spirit was with him every step of the way.

  148. The work of the incarnate Lord,

  149. that the work that he accomplished for us

  150. in his human nature,

  151. was accomplished in and through the Holy Spirit.

  152. Now that tells us something

  153. very central

  154. about the work of the Holy Spirit.

  155. The Holy Spirit's new covenant ministry

  156. is what we might say is Christocentric.

  157. It is centered around Jesus.

  158. Jesus is always the focus of the Holy Spirit's work.

  159. So we can never separate

  160. the work of the Spirit

  161. from the work of the Son.

  162. In other words, we might put it this way.

  163. What the Son accomplished

  164. by the power of the Spirit,

  165. the Spirit now applies

  166. to the glory of the Son.

  167. What the Son accomplished

  168. by the power of the Spirit,

  169. the Spirit now applies

  170. to the glory of the Son.

  171. And this is what Jesus himself said about the Spirit

  172. in John 16, 14.

  173. He says quite bluntly,

  174. He will glorify who?

  175. Me.

  176. The Spirit will glorify me

  177. for he will take what is mine

  178. and declare it to you.

  179. Okay.

  180. Now,

  181. when we think about

  182. how the Holy Spirit then

  183. applies the work of the Son to us,

  184. the first question we might ask is,

  185. well, how do we come to know

  186. about Jesus at all?

  187. How do we come to know

  188. and understand

  189. who Jesus is

  190. and what he's done?

  191. How do we know?

  192. After all,

  193. how can we believe in Christ

  194. and be saved

  195. if Christ has not been made known to us?

  196. How can we grow

  197. in our relationship with Christ

  198. if we simply don't know anything about him?

  199. Right?

  200. And that is the question.

  201. That is the question of revelation.

  202. Not the book

  203. at the end of the Bible,

  204. but revelation in the sense of

  205. God making himself known.

  206. Right?

  207. Now,

  208. the next question we might ask is,

  209. once I hear and understand

  210. who Jesus is

  211. and what he's done,

  212. how do I come to truly repent

  213. and believe?

  214. How does someone move

  215. from merely hearing about Jesus

  216. to putting their trust in him,

  217. to being united by faith in him?

  218. Right?

  219. And this is the question

  220. of what we might call regeneration.

  221. And that leads to another question,

  222. doesn't it?

  223. Once someone comes to understand

  224. and trust in Christ,

  225. how do they grow in Christ's likeness?

  226. How do they become

  227. more and more like him?

  228. And that is the question

  229. of sanctification.

  230. And the answer

  231. that the New Testament gives

  232. to each of these

  233. essential,

  234. critical questions,

  235. the answer that

  236. the New Testament gives is

  237. by the working

  238. of the Holy Spirit.

  239. It is the work of God,

  240. the Holy Spirit,

  241. to make Christ known,

  242. to bring us to saving

  243. faith in him,

  244. and to make us

  245. grow more and more

  246. in Christ's likeness.

  247. And this is what

  248. we're going to cover

  249. over the next three weeks

  250. of our class.

  251. I want to spend

  252. the rest of the time today

  253. considering the Holy Spirit's

  254. work of revealing Christ

  255. to us.

  256. And next week,

  257. we'll talk about

  258. regeneration and saving faith.

  259. And then the following week,

  260. John Hinkson,

  261. one of our elders here

  262. at Trinity,

  263. will teach about

  264. the Holy Spirit's

  265. work of sanctification

  266. because he's much more

  267. sanctified than I am

  268. and he'll do a better job

  269. of it.

  270. Then after that,

  271. we won't be done

  272. after that.

  273. After that,

  274. we'll take a few weeks

  275. and we'll discuss

  276. the work of the Holy Spirit

  277. in the church.

  278. Because what we see

  279. in and through all of this

  280. is that the Holy Spirit

  281. works not just personally

  282. but corporately.

  283. The Holy Spirit

  284. applies the work of Christ

  285. not just to individuals

  286. but to a people.

  287. So this is where

  288. we're going in the course.

  289. Okay,

  290. so let's spend

  291. the rest of our time

  292. this morning

  293. considering the Holy Spirit's

  294. work in making Christ known,

  295. in revealing the things

  296. of Christ to us.

  297. And I have five headings

  298. for us this morning

  299. that we see,

  300. I think,

  301. pretty distinctly

  302. and clearly

  303. in the New Testament.

  304. when we think

  305. of the Holy Spirit's

  306. work in making Christ known.

  307. The first thing

  308. I think we want to consider

  309. is Jesus' promise.

  310. Jesus' promise.

  311. That's an O.

  312. Jesus promised,

  313. Jesus himself promised

  314. that the Holy Spirit

  315. would be the one

  316. to make him known.

  317. Now,

  318. in John 14 through 16,

  319. Jesus is preparing,

  320. you'll remember,

  321. his disciples

  322. for his departure.

  323. He will soon be

  324. crucified and raised.

  325. They will see him again

  326. after his resurrection,

  327. but Jesus will soon

  328. ascend to the Father

  329. after his resurrection

  330. to complete

  331. the work of redemption,

  332. to sit at the Father's

  333. right hand.

  334. And how then,

  335. at that point,

  336. how would the world

  337. come to know him

  338. after he completes

  339. redemption

  340. and returns to the Father?

  341. Well,

  342. in John 15,

  343. 26,

  344. Jesus says,

  345. when the helper comes,

  346. whom I will send to you

  347. from the Father,

  348. the Spirit of truth

  349. who proceeds from the Father,

  350. he will bear witness

  351. about me.

  352. The Spirit will be the one

  353. who bears witness

  354. to Jesus.

  355. Now, friends,

  356. consider how beautiful

  357. this is.

  358. What we're seeing here

  359. is that the triune God

  360. will not leave unfinished

  361. the great work

  362. of making himself known

  363. to his fallen creation.

  364. What the Father planned

  365. from eternity

  366. and the Son accomplished

  367. in history,

  368. that is not going

  369. to fall short

  370. of completion.

  371. No, God himself,

  372. God the Holy Spirit,

  373. will ensure

  374. that the Son,

  375. who alone makes

  376. the Father known,

  377. will himself be known.

  378. Just as the Father

  379. can only be known

  380. through the Son,

  381. remember John 1, 18,

  382. no one has ever seen God,

  383. but the one and only God

  384. who is at the Father's side

  385. has made him known,

  386. or Matthew 11, 27,

  387. where Jesus says,

  388. no one knows the Father

  389. except the Son,

  390. no one knows the Son

  391. except the Father, right?

  392. No one knows the Father

  393. except he to whom Jesus,

  394. the Son,

  395. will reveal him, right?

  396. Just as the Father

  397. can only be known

  398. through the Son,

  399. so the Son

  400. can only be known

  401. through the Spirit.

  402. So Jesus promises

  403. that the Holy Spirit

  404. will make him known.

  405. But that leads

  406. to a question,

  407. doesn't it?

  408. How?

  409. How?

  410. By what means

  411. will God the Holy Spirit

  412. make Christ known?

  413. What means will he use?

  414. Right?

  415. Will it be clouds

  416. in the sky, right?

  417. No.

  418. This brings us

  419. to our second point.

  420. Two.

  421. The apostles witness

  422. listen to what Jesus

  423. says to the apostles

  424. in that same section

  425. of John's gospel.

  426. This is John 14,

  427. 25 through 26.

  428. Jesus says,

  429. these things

  430. I have spoken to you

  431. while I am still with you.

  432. But the helper

  433. of the Holy Spirit

  434. whom the Father

  435. will send in my name,

  436. he will teach you

  437. all things

  438. and bring to your

  439. remembrance

  440. all I have said to you.

  441. So,

  442. first,

  443. the Holy Spirit

  444. will ensure

  445. that the apostles

  446. learn and remember

  447. all that Jesus

  448. taught them.

  449. through the work

  450. of the Holy Spirit,

  451. the apostles

  452. become faithful

  453. in their remembrance

  454. of Jesus.

  455. Okay,

  456. but now listen

  457. to what Jesus says

  458. just a little later

  459. in John 15,

  460. 26 through 27.

  461. He says again,

  462. oh,

  463. we read the first verse

  464. but now listen

  465. to the second verse.

  466. First verse goes like this,

  467. remember?

  468. When the helper comes

  469. who I'll send you

  470. from the Father,

  471. the Spirit of truth

  472. who proceeds

  473. from the Father,

  474. he will bear witness

  475. about me.

  476. Next verse.

  477. And you also

  478. will bear witness.

  479. because you have been

  480. with me from the beginning.

  481. So,

  482. who's Jesus talking to here?

  483. He's talking to the apostles,

  484. those who have been

  485. with Jesus

  486. from the beginning

  487. of his ministry.

  488. They will bear witness.

  489. Through the work

  490. of the Holy Spirit,

  491. they will not just remember

  492. but they will proclaim

  493. the things of Jesus

  494. faithfully

  495. for all to hear.

  496. And Jesus himself

  497. promised this earlier

  498. in his ministry

  499. and he promised

  500. that this would happen

  501. even in moments

  502. of great pressure.

  503. Luke 12,

  504. 11 through 12 says,

  505. Jesus is speaking

  506. to his apostles,

  507. he says,

  508. when they bring you

  509. before the synagogues

  510. and the rulers

  511. and the authorities,

  512. in other words,

  513. bring you to trial,

  514. don't be anxious

  515. about how you should

  516. defend yourself

  517. or what you should say

  518. for the Holy Spirit

  519. will teach you

  520. in that very hour

  521. what you ought to say.

  522. Remember what Jesus says

  523. when he's sending out

  524. the apostles

  525. and the disciples

  526. on their sort of

  527. preliminary missions?

  528. Whoever listens to you

  529. listens to me.

  530. Right?

  531. On the basis

  532. of what Jesus himself

  533. taught them then,

  534. when we come

  535. to the writings

  536. of the apostles,

  537. we see that they

  538. understood themselves

  539. that their witness

  540. was the work

  541. of the Holy Spirit.

  542. So this isn't

  543. what Jesus taught

  544. but the apostles

  545. themselves understood

  546. their ministry

  547. to be happening,

  548. their proclamation

  549. to be happening

  550. under the power

  551. of the Spirit.

  552. In 1 Peter 1,

    1 Peter 1:12

  553. verse 12,

  554. Peter says,

  555. those who preached,

  556. he's speaking to the church,

  557. he's saying,

  558. those who preached

  559. the good news to you

  560. by the Holy Spirit

  561. sent from heaven

  562. have announced to you

  563. things into which

  564. even angels long to look.

  565. Right?

  566. So those apostolic witnesses

  567. !

  568. to the good news

  569. about Jesus,

  570. they were doing it how?

  571. By the Holy Spirit.

  572. Or listen to how Paul

  573. puts it in 1 Thessalonians

  574. 1, 4-5.

  575. He says,

  576. we know,

  577. writing to the Thessalonian church,

  578. we know,

  579. brothers loved by God,

  580. that He has chosen you

  581. because our gospel,

  582. our proclamation

  583. of good news

  584. came to you

  585. not only in word

  586. but also in power

  587. and in the Holy Spirit

  588. and with full conviction.

  589. So Paul understood

  590. that his preaching

  591. as an apostle

  592. was done

  593. through the work

  594. of the Holy Spirit.

  595. So,

  596. the Holy Spirit

  597. makes Christ known

  598. through the witness

  599. and proclamation

  600. of the apostles.

  601. According to Jesus,

  602. the Holy Spirit

  603. ensured that they

  604. would remember

  605. all that Jesus

  606. had taught them

  607. about Himself,

  608. about His ministry,

  609. about the meaning

  610. of His death

  611. and resurrection,

  612. about the life

  613. that He now calls us

  614. to live under

  615. His Lordship

  616. as His church.

  617. And according to Jesus,

  618. the Holy Spirit

  619. would empower them

  620. to testify

  621. and proclaim

  622. these things faithfully

  623. so that He might

  624. be known.

  625. But,

  626. doesn't that raise

  627. another question?

  628. In Matthew 28,

  629. Jesus told the disciples

  630. to make disciples

  631. of all nations.

  632. But,

  633. all the nations

  634. wouldn't be evangelized

  635. in the lifetime

  636. of the apostles.

  637. So,

  638. how would the Holy Spirit

  639. ensure

  640. that His testimony

  641. to Jesus

  642. through the apostles

  643. would reach all people?

  644. How would the Holy Spirit

  645. bring it about

  646. that His word

  647. through the apostles

  648. would not be bound

  649. by their limitations

  650. in either place

  651. or in time?

  652. And that brings us

  653. to the third point.

  654. Scripture's inspiration.

  655. I'm going to do

  656. something funny here.

  657. I'm going to put in

  658. in parentheses.

  659. In-spir-

  660. Oh, hold on.

  661. It's writing a different word.

  662. Scripture's inspiration.

  663. The witness of the apostles

  664. didn't remain

  665. a spoken word only.

  666. It soon became

  667. a written word as well.

  668. And through the written word,

  669. the Holy Spirit's work

  670. of making Christ known

  671. through the apostolic testimony

  672. would be extended

  673. and advanced

  674. to the ends of the earth

  675. and to the end of the age.

  676. Okay.

  677. Now,

  678. when it came

  679. to the written word

  680. of Scripture,

  681. Jesus Himself believed

  682. that every word

  683. of the Hebrew Bible,

  684. the Old Testament,

  685. He believed every word

  686. to be the very words of God.

  687. We won't go into detail

  688. about that this morning,

  689. but read the Gospels

  690. and consider for yourself

  691. how Jesus treats

  692. the Old Testament.

  693. He quotes it.

  694. He lives it.

  695. He says it can't be broken.

  696. He makes arguments

  697. against His critics

  698. on the basis

  699. of single words.

  700. For Jesus,

  701. the Bible

  702. is the authoritative

  703. word of God.

  704. And the apostles

  705. believed the same thing,

  706. that the words of Scripture

  707. were the words of God.

  708. Listen to how

  709. the apostle Peter

  710. puts it

  711. in 2 Peter 1,

    2 Peter 1:16–21

  712. verses 16-21.

  713. I'm going to read

  714. this whole paragraph

  715. because I think

  716. the whole thing

  717. is important.

  718. Peter writes this.

  719. He says,

  720. He says,

  721. We did not follow

  722. cleverly devised myths

  723. when we made known to you

  724. the power and coming

  725. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  726. but we were eyewitnesses

  727. of His majesty.

  728. For,

  729. when Jesus received honor

  730. and glory

  731. from God the Father,

  732. the voice was born

  733. to Him

  734. by the majestic glory,

  735. This is my beloved Son

  736. with whom I am well pleased.

  737. We ourselves heard

  738. this very voice

  739. born from heaven

  740. and we were with Him

  741. on the holy mountain.

  742. And,

  743. we have

  744. the prophetic word

  745. more fully confirmed

  746. to which you will do well

  747. to pay attention

  748. as to a lamp

  749. shining in a dark place

  750. until the day dawns

  751. and the morning star

  752. rises in your hearts.

  753. Knowing this,

  754. first of all,

  755. that no prophecy

  756. of Scripture

  757. comes from

  758. someone's own

  759. interpretation?

  760. For no prophecy

  761. was ever produced

  762. by the will of man,

  763. but men

  764. spoke from God

  765. as they were

  766. carried along

  767. by the Holy Spirit.

  768. Okay,

  769. what is Peter saying here?

  770. First,

  771. he's saying

  772. that he,

  773. as an apostle,

  774. was an eyewitness

  775. of Jesus' majesty,

  776. right?

  777. He recalls

  778. the transfiguration

  779. and says,

  780. we were there,

  781. we saw everything,

  782. we heard everything,

  783. and we made it known to you.

  784. Then,

  785. Peter says in verse 19,

  786. that not just

  787. was Jesus' work

  788. a fulfillment

  789. of the Old Testament prophecy,

  790. but that we ought

  791. to pay close attention

  792. to the Old Testament Scriptures

  793. as if it were

  794. a light in the darkness.

  795. Why?

  796. Because the words

  797. of Scripture

  798. aren't merely

  799. human words.

  800. What are the words

  801. of Scripture?

  802. Well,

  803. Peter says in verse 21,

  804. men spoke from God

  805. as they were carried

  806. along by the Holy Spirit.

  807. Now,

  808. notice two things here.

  809. Notice that the words

  810. of Scripture

  811. are human words,

  812. right?

  813. Men spoke

  814. from God.

  815. What you read,

  816. when you read

  817. the Bible,

  818. right,

  819. you are reading

  820. human words.

  821. Each writer has

  822. their own personality,

  823. their own historical

  824. and cultural context,

  825. their own themes,

  826. their own vocabulary

  827. and style,

  828. but they are not

  829. merely human words.

  830. Peter says they were

  831. carried along

  832. by the Holy Spirit.

  833. The Holy Spirit

  834. guided and worked

  835. in and through

  836. their words

  837. to speak the words

  838. He wanted to say.

  839. Without overriding

  840. their reason,

  841. without overriding

  842. their personality,

  843. the Holy Spirit

  844. spoke

  845. and made it such

  846. that what they wrote

  847. was what God

  848. wanted to say.

  849. Now,

  850. Paul also affirms

  851. this view of Scripture

  852. in 2 Timothy 3,

  853. 16-17.

  854. He writes,

  855. All Scripture

  856. is breathed out

  857. by God

  858. and profitable

  859. for teaching,

  860. for reproof,

  861. for correction,

  862. for training in righteousness

  863. that the man of God

  864. may be complete,

  865. equipped for every good work.

  866. All Scripture,

  867. Paul says,

  868. is breathed out

  869. by God.

  870. Now,

  871. given the passage

  872. we just read

  873. from Peter,

  874. right,

  875. I think it seems

  876. reasonable to conclude

  877. that the breathing

  878. out of Scripture

  879. is the particular work

  880. of God the Holy Spirit,

  881. right?

  882. Men spoke from God

  883. as they were carried

  884. along by the Spirit.

  885. Now,

  886. we often say

  887. on the basis

  888. of this text

  889. that Scripture

  890. is inspired,

  891. right?

  892. Inspired.

  893. We talk about

  894. the inspiration

  895. of Scripture.

  896. But the word

  897. Paul uses here

  898. is actually

  899. kind of a unique word,

  900. maybe even a word

  901. that Paul himself

  902. coined,

  903. that in Greek

  904. is theopneustos.

  905. Theo,

  906. God,

  907. pneustos.

  908. It's a great

  909. onomatopoeia there.

  910. Breathed out,

  911. right?

  912. That it's literally

  913. God breathed.

  914. The ESV does a good job

  915. of translating that.

  916. All Scripture

  917. is breathed out

  918. by God.

  919. So,

  920. the Holy Spirit

  921. isn't,

  922. as it were,

  923. breathing into Scripture,

  924. right?

  925. It's not technically

  926. correct,

  927. maybe,

  928. to say that

  929. Scripture is inspired.

  930. Maybe it's a little

  931. more accurate

  932. to say

  933. that Scripture

  934. is expired.

  935. But then it sounds

  936. like it's out of date.

  937. So,

  938. we don't,

  939. we don't,

  940. outspired.

  941. There we go,

  942. that's better.

  943. The expiration

  944. of Scripture.

  945. But,

  946. you know,

  947. in English,

  948. like we said,

  949. that doesn't sound

  950. quite right.

  951. So,

  952. we still talk

  953. about the inspiration.

  954. But,

  955. the Holy,

  956. the words

  957. of Scripture

  958. are the words

  959. of the Spirit

  960. of God

  961. breathed out

  962. in human words.

  963. Right?

  964. This is why

  965. the writer of Hebrews

  966. will say that

  967. the word of God,

  968. referring to Scripture,

  969. is living.

  970. It's active.

  971. Now,

  972. one might say,

  973. wait a minute.

  974. 2 Peter,

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  975. chapter 1,

  976. 2 Timothy,

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  977. chapter 3,

  978. they're talking

  979. about the Old Testament,

  980. right?

  981. Yeah.

  982. Right?

  983. Right?

  984. Did the apostles

  985. think

  986. that their own

  987. writings

  988. were Scripture

  989. in,

  990. outspired

  991. Scripture

  992. in the same

  993. way

  994. as the Old Testament?

  995. Well,

  996. it actually

  997. seems that

  998. they did.

  999. Now,

1000. where do we see that?

  1001. We're going

  1002. again to Peter.

  1003. Consider what Peter

  1004. says a little later

  1005. in that same book,

  1006. in 2 Peter,

    2 Peter 3:15–18

  1007. chapter 3,

  1008. verse 15

  1009. through 18.

  1010. He says,

  1011. and I love

  1012. this passage,

  1013. actually.

  1014. You're going to

  1015. appreciate this one.

  1016. Our beloved

  1017. brother Paul

  1018. also wrote

  1019. to you

  1020. according to

  1021. the wisdom

  1022. given to him,

  1023. as he does

  1024. in all his letters

  1025. when he speaks

  1026. of them

  1027. in these matters.

  1028. There are

  1029. some things

  1030. in them

  1031. that are

  1032. hard to

  1033. understand.

  1034. Kind of a nice,

  1035. feel a little

  1036. affirmed in that,

  1037. don't we?

  1038. Oh,

  1039. okay.

  1040. Okay.

  1041. Some things

  1042. in them

  1043. are hard

  1044. to understand,

  1045. which the ignorant

  1046. and unstable

  1047. twist to their

  1048. own destruction

  1049. as they do

  1050. the other

  1051. scriptures.

  1052. You,

  1053. therefore,

  1054. beloved,

  1055. knowing this

  1056. beforehand,

  1057. take care

  1058. that you're

  1059. not carried

  1060. away by the

  1061. error of

  1062. lawless people

  1063. and lose

  1064. your own

  1065. stability,

  1066. but grow

  1067. in the grace

  1068. and knowledge

  1069. of our Lord

  1070. and Savior

  1071. Jesus Christ.

  1072. To him

  1073. be the glory

  1074. both now

  1075. and to the

  1076. day of

  1077. eternity.

  1078. Amen.

  1079. Amen.

  1080. Question.

  1081. How does

  1082. Peter categorize

  1083. Paul's letters?

  1084. What does

  1085. he say?

  1086. Scripture.

  1087. Now,

  1088. okay,

  1089. Scripture.

  1090. The word

  1091. literally just

  1092. means writings,

  1093. right?

  1094. But,

  1095. of course,

  1096. in the context

  1097. of Peter's

  1098. letter,

  1099. as we saw

  1100. earlier,

  1101. when Peter's

  1102. talking about

  1103. scripture,

  1104. he clearly

  1105. seems to

  1106. mean divine

  1107. scripture.

  1108. So,

  1109. here is one

  1110. apostle looking

  1111. at another

  1112. apostles of

  1113. writings and

  1114. saying,

  1115. it's

  1116. scripture.

  1117. Heed it.

  1118. Don't get

  1119. carried away.

  1120. Heed it

  1121. and grow in

  1122. the grace

  1123. and knowledge

  1124. of our Lord

  1125. Jesus Christ.

  1126. Consider also

  1127. Paul's

  1128. kind of

  1129. own

  1130. self-

  1131. understanding.

  1132. And I think

  1133. this is

  1134. exemplary of

  1135. the apostles.

  1136. Consider his

  1137. self-

  1138. understanding

  1139. in 1 Corinthians

  1140. 14,

  1141. 36-38.

  1142. In the midst

  1143. of correcting

  1144. the Corinthian

  1145. church,

  1146. he writes,

  1147. was it from

  1148. you that the

  1149. word of God

  1150. came?

  1151. Or are you

  1152. the only

  1153. ones it

  1154. has reached?

  1155. If anyone

  1156. thinks he

  1157. is a prophet

  1158. or spiritual,

  1159. he should

  1160. acknowledge that

  1161. the things I

  1162. am writing to

  1163. you are a

  1164. command of

  1165. the Lord.

  1166. If anyone

  1167. does not

  1168. recognize this,

  1169. he is not

  1170. recognized.

  1171. Ooh,

  1172. spicy words

  1173. from Paul,

  1174. right?

  1175. Come on,

  1176. Paul.

  1177. Ah,

  1178. but clear

  1179. words,

  1180. are they not?

  1181. Paul understood

  1182. that he was

  1183. writing a command,

  1184. not of himself,

  1185. but of the Lord.

  1186. He understood

  1187. that as an

  1188. apostle,

  1189. he wrote with

  1190. the Lord's

  1191. own authority,

  1192. just as Jesus

  1193. promised the

  1194. apostles that

  1195. they would

  1196. understand all

  1197. that Jesus said

  1198. and they would

  1199. bear witness

  1200. faithfully so

  1201. he sees that

  1202. in his writing,

  1203. he's exercising

  1204. that same work,

  1205. right?

  1206. But what

  1207. about those

  1208. books in the

  1209. New Testament

  1210. that were

  1211. not written by

  1212. the apostles

  1213. themselves,

  1214. but were written

  1215. by the apostles

  1216. sort of close

  1217. associates?

  1218. What books

  1219. are those?

  1220. Well,

  1221. think about

  1222. Mark,

  1223. right?

  1224. Traditionally,

  1225. Mark was a

  1226. close associate

  1227. of Peter,

  1228. but not himself

  1229. an apostle.

  1230. Or Luke,

  1231. right?

  1232. Luke was a

  1233. close associate

  1234. of Paul,

  1235. but not himself

  1236. an apostle.

  1237. Or the unknown

  1238. author of Hebrews,

  1239. right?

  1240. Who?

  1241. I mean,

  1242. if he wasn't

  1243. an apostle

  1244. himself,

  1245. which it'll

  1246. be fun to

  1247. get to heaven

  1248. one day

  1249. and figure

  1250. out who

  1251. wrote the

  1252. book of

  1253. Hebrews.

  1254. But clearly,

  1255. if the author

  1256. of Hebrews

  1257. wasn't an

  1258. apostle himself,

  1259. he was clearly

  1260. one of the

  1261. close associates

  1262. of the

  1263. apostles.

  1264. He mentions

  1265. some of the

  1266. other kind

  1267. of associates

  1268. of the

  1269. apostles at the

  1270. end of his

  1271. letter.

  1272. How should

  1273. we view

  1274. those writings?

  1275. Well,

  1276. it's very

  1277. interesting

  1278. that in

  1279. 1 Timothy 5,

  1280. 17 through

  1281. 18,

  1282. the apostle

  1283. Paul writes

  1284. this.

  1285. He says,

  1286. let the

  1287. elders who

  1288. rule well

  1289. be considered

  1290. worthy of

  1291. double honor,

  1292. especially those

  1293. who labor in

  1294. preaching and

  1295. teaching.

  1296. For the

  1297. scripture says,

  1298. you shall not

  1299. muzzle an ox

  1300. when it treads

  1301. out the grain,

  1302. and the laborer

  1303. deserves his

  1304. wages.

  1305. Sidebar,

  1306. isn't it great

  1307. when Paul talks

  1308. about leadership

  1309. in the church?

  1310. He says,

  1311. hey,

  1312. respect them,

  1313. because an ox

  1314. deserves his wages,

  1315. right?

  1316. Exalts and

  1317. jumbles at the

  1318. same time.

  1319. Here we are,

  1320. just faithful

  1321. oxen treading

  1322. out the grain,

  1323. right?

  1324. Ah,

  1325. Paul in

  1326. this passage

  1327. says,

  1328. the scripture

  1329. says,

  1330. the scripture

  1331. says.

  1332. Now,

  1333. the first

  1334. quote,

  1335. you shall not

  1336. muzzle an ox

  1337. when it treads

  1338. out the grain,

  1339. that's from

  1340. Deuteronomy 25,

    Deuteronomy 25:4

  1341. verse 4.

  1342. You can look

  1343. that up.

  1344. What about

  1345. the second

  1346. quote?

  1347. The laborer

  1348. deserves his

  1349. wages.

  1350. Where does

  1351. scripture say

  1352. that?

  1353. Well,

  1354. in Luke

    Luke 10:1–7

  1355. chapter 10,

  1356. verse 1

  1357. through 7,

  1358. Luke records

  1359. Jesus'

  1360. instructions to

  1361. the 72,

  1362. whom he sends

  1363. out during

  1364. his earthly

  1365. ministry.

  1366. And when we

  1367. pick up that

  1368. passage in

  1369. verse 4,

  1370. Jesus says,

  1371. carry no

  1372. money bag,

  1373. no knapsack,

  1374. no sandals,

  1375. greet no one

  1376. on the road.

  1377. Whatever house

  1378. you enter,

  1379. first say,

  1380. peace be to

  1381. this house.

  1382. And if a

  1383. son of peace

  1384. is there,

  1385. your peace

  1386. will rest

  1387. upon him.

  1388. But if not,

  1389. it will return

  1390. to you and

  1391. remain in

  1392. the same

  1393. house,

  1394. eating and

  1395. drinking what

  1396. they provide.

  1397. For the

  1398. laborer

  1399. deserves his

  1400. wages.

  1401. It seems,

  1402. it seems that

  1403. Paul in 1

  1404. Timothy 5.17

  1405. is quoting

  1406. the Gospel

  1407. of Luke.

  1408. And into

  1409. what category

  1410. does Paul put

  1411. that writing?

  1412. Scripture.

  1413. Right alongside

  1414. Deuteronomy,

  1415. no less,

  1416. the Torah.

  1417. It's as if I

  1418. were to say,

  1419. as the

  1420. great writers

  1421. once wrote,

  1422. to be or

  1423. not to be,

  1424. and with

  1425. great power

  1426. comes great

  1427. responsibility.

  1428. Now what

  1429. am I doing

  1430. when I say

  1431. something like

  1432. that?

  1433. Who am I

  1434. putting into

  1435. the same

  1436. category?

  1437. Shakespeare,

  1438. right?

  1439. Who wrote

  1440. with a great

  1441. power comes

  1442. great responsibility?

  1443. Stan Lee.

  1444. Yes,

  1445. Ivor,

  1446. Stan Lee,

  1447. the great

  1448. poet of our

  1449. time,

  1450. right?

  1451. Right?

  1452. Right?

  1453. So Paul,

  1454. in an almost

  1455. mind-boggling

  1456. way,

  1457. seems to put

  1458. Luke's Gospel

  1459. and Deuteronomy

  1460. in the same

  1461. category,

  1462. calling them

  1463. both

  1464. scriptures.

  1465. Okay,

  1466. so what are

  1467. we to make

  1468. of all this?

  1469. It stands to

  1470. reason,

  1471. friends,

  1472. that the

  1473. writings,

  1474. not just of

  1475. the Old

  1476. Testament,

  1477. but of the

  1478. New Testament

  1479. as well,

  1480. are the work

  1481. of the Holy

  1482. Spirit.

  1483. In the New

  1484. Testament,

  1485. we have the

  1486. Holy Spirit's

  1487. inscripturating

  1488. work.

  1489. here too,

  1490. not just in

  1491. the Old

  1492. Testament,

  1493. but in the

  1494. New Testament,

  1495. the Holy Spirit

  1496. is breathing

  1497. out through

  1498. the written

  1499. testimony of

  1500. the apostles,

  1501. his own

  1502. word,

  1503. his own

  1504. witness to

  1505. the risen

  1506. Christ,

  1507. just as

  1508. Jesus promised

  1509. he would.

  1510. So consider

  1511. then the

  1512. great gift

  1513. that scripture

  1514. is to us.

  1515. Because the

  1516. Holy Spirit

  1517. has inscripturated

  1518. his word,

  1519. we can now

  1520. read it

  1521. and declare

  1522. it and publish

  1523. it and meditate

  1524. on it and

  1525. proclaim it to

  1526. the ends of

  1527. the earth,

  1528. to the end

  1529. of the age.

  1530. There will

  1531. never be a

  1532. time when the

  1533. church does

  1534. not have the

  1535. Holy Spirit's

  1536. apostolic witness

  1537. to Jesus.

  1538. His word will

  1539. never leave us.

  1540. We will always

  1541. have this light

  1542. shining, as

  1543. Peter says.

  1544. We will always

  1545. have this light

  1546. shining, no matter

  1547. how dark it

  1548. gets.

  1549. right?

  1550. And we can

  1551. read these

  1552. words.

  1553. And again, as

  1554. Peter says, we

  1555. can read these

  1556. words until the

  1557. day dawns and

  1558. the morning star

  1559. rises in your

  1560. hearts.

  1561. Through the

  1562. Holy Spirit's

  1563. work, the

  1564. light shines

  1565. into our hearts

  1566. through his

  1567. work of

  1568. scripture, through

  1569. the breathing out

  1570. of scripture, the

  1571. light of God

  1572. shines into our

  1573. hearts and we

  1574. behold Christ,

  1575. the morning

  1576. star.

  1577. God.

  1578. Now, that

  1579. brings us

  1580. straight away to

  1581. our fourth

  1582. point, which

  1583. is the

  1584. believer's

  1585. illumination.

  1586. The

  1587. believer's

  1588. illumination.

  1589. The Spirit has

  1590. breathed out

  1591. scripture.

  1592. It is truly

  1593. God's word in

  1594. human words.

  1595. But how do

  1596. we come to

  1597. understand it?

  1598. The truth is,

  1599. friends, scripture

  1600. would remain a

  1601. puzzle and a

  1602. labyrinth to us

  1603. without the work

  1604. of the Holy

  1605. Spirit.

  1606. The Holy Spirit

  1607. not only does the

  1608. speaking, but he

  1609. does the work in

  1610. us so that we

  1611. might understand

  1612. what we read.

  1613. And this is what

  1614. traditionally has

  1615. been called the

  1616. Holy Spirit's work

  1617. of illumination.

  1618. And a classic

  1619. statement of this

  1620. is found in 1

  1621. Corinthians 2,

  1622. 11 through 16.

  1623. Now, we had

  1624. recourse to this

  1625. passage when we

  1626. were talking about

  1627. the person of

  1628. the Spirit.

  1629. Now, look at it

  1630. again when we

  1631. consider the work

  1632. of the Spirit.

  1633. Let me read

  1634. this for us.

  1635. Paul writes,

  1636. For who knows

  1637. a person's

  1638. thoughts except

  1639. the spirit of

  1640. that person

  1641. which is in

  1642. him?

  1643. Makes sense,

  1644. right?

  1645. So also, no

  1646. one comprehends

  1647. the thoughts of

  1648. God except the

  1649. Spirit of God.

  1650. Only the Spirit

  1651. of God totally

  1652. knows God,

  1653. right?

  1654. Now, we have

  1655. received not the

  1656. Spirit of the

  1657. world, but the

  1658. Spirit who is

  1659. from God, that

  1660. we might

  1661. understand the

  1662. things freely

  1663. given us by

  1664. God.

  1665. And then Paul

  1666. says, we impart

  1667. this in words,

  1668. not taught by

  1669. human wisdom,

  1670. but taught by

  1671. the Spirit.

  1672. Again, affirming

  1673. his own self-

  1674. understanding as

  1675. an apostle of

  1676. speaking Spirit

  1677. inspired words,

  1678. interpreting

  1679. spiritual truths

  1680. to those who

  1681. are spiritual,

  1682. right?

  1683. Words of the

  1684. Spirit to those

  1685. indwelt by the

  1686. Spirit.

  1687. The natural

  1688. person, Paul

  1689. says, does not

  1690. accept the

  1691. things of the

  1692. Spirit, for

  1693. they're folly

  1694. to him.

  1695. And he's not

  1696. able to

  1697. understand them

  1698. because they're

  1699. spiritually discerned,

  1700. that is, discerned

  1701. through the work

  1702. of the Spirit.

  1703. The spiritual

  1704. person judges

  1705. all things,

  1706. that is, discerns

  1707. all things,

  1708. understands,

  1709. because the

  1710. Spirit's work

  1711. in them, but

  1712. is himself judged

  1713. by no one,

  1714. right?

  1715. For who has

  1716. understood the

  1717. mind of the

  1718. Lord so as to

  1719. instruct him,

  1720. but we have

  1721. the mind of

  1722. Christ.

  1723. So what does

  1724. this mean?

  1725. It means that

  1726. when we, friends,

  1727. when we take the

  1728. Scriptures into

  1729. our hands,

  1730. it's not

  1731. something that

  1732. we control.

  1733. It is God's

  1734. Word.

  1735. And that means

  1736. God must be the

  1737. one who brings

  1738. us to understand

  1739. it.

  1740. Too often,

  1741. those of us who

  1742. believe in

  1743. Scripture's

  1744. authority and

  1745. inspiration think

  1746. that we now can

  1747. sit over Scripture,

  1748. but we always sit

  1749. under it,

  1750. right?

  1751. our understanding

  1752. of it is

  1753. completely dependent

  1754. on the Spirit.

  1755. The God,

  1756. the Spirit,

  1757. who breathed out

  1758. the Scriptures

  1759. is God,

  1760. the Spirit,

  1761. who causes us

  1762. to understand

  1763. them.

  1764. So we have to

  1765. approach the

  1766. Scriptures with

  1767. humility and a

  1768. right dependence on

  1769. Him for any

  1770. understanding that

  1771. we receive.

  1772. But consider what

  1773. good news this is.

  1774. It's good news that

  1775. the Spirit not only

  1776. speaks through the

  1777. Apostle's witness,

  1778. He not only breathes

  1779. out that witness

  1780. into the pages of

  1781. Scripture,

  1782. but His wind

  1783. keeps moving into

  1784. the minds and

  1785. hearts of those

  1786. who read the

  1787. written Word with

  1788. prayerful dependence

  1789. on Him and

  1790. humility before Him.

  1791. The Spirit does

  1792. bring understanding

  1793. and clarity and

  1794. assurance.

  1795. He does indeed

  1796. cause the morning

  1797. star to rise in

  1798. our hearts so that

  1799. we might see Christ

  1800. in His Word.

  1801. Isn't that good

  1802. news?

  1803. Right?

  1804. Okay, that brings

  1805. us to our last

  1806. point.

  1807. We're moving a

  1808. little quickly here

  1809. because of time.

  1810. Five, the church's

  1811. proclamation.

  1812. As the church

  1813. prayerfully reads,

  1814. studies, meditates

  1815. upon, and obeys the

  1816. Holy Spirit's and

  1817. scripturated words,

  1818. as the Holy Spirit

  1819. does His work of

  1820. illumination so that

  1821. we might understand

  1822. these words and

  1823. understand the things

  1824. of Christ and come

  1825. to know Him, then

1826. we too are swept up

  1827. in this work of

  1828. making Christ known.

1829. On the basis of the

  1830. Holy Spirit's witness

  1831. in the written word,

  1832. the church proclaims

  1833. Christ.

1834. We don't do so in

  1835. pride because we've

  1836. somehow solved the

1837. riddle of God and of

  1838. Christ for ourselves,

1839. but we do it in

  1840. joyful humility and

  1841. without any pretension

  1842. because God in His

  1843. mercy and kindness

  1844. has made these things

  1845. known to us.

  1846. We who were in

  1847. darkness have seen a

  1848. great light.

  1849. God who said,

1850. let light shine out of

  1851. darkness, has shown in

1852. our hearts to give the

  1853. light of the knowledge

1854. of the glory of God in

  1855. the face of Jesus

  1856. Christ.

1857. And so the church too

  1858. proclaims Christ.

  1859. And through the church's

  1860. biblical proclamation,

  1861. the Spirit makes Christ

  1862. known.

  1863. Consider Romans, right?

  1864. 10, 9 through 17.

  1865. Paul writes, if you

  1866. confess with your mouth

1867. that Jesus is Lord and

  1868. believe in your heart

  1869. that God raised Him

1870. from the dead, you will

  1871. be saved.

1872. For with the heart one

  1873. believes and is

  1874. justified, and with the

  1875. mouth one confesses and

  1876. is saved.

  1877. For the scripture says

  1878. everyone who believes in

1879. Him will not be put to

  1880. shame.

  1881. But there's no distinction

  1882. between Jew and Greek,

1883. for the same Lord is

  1884. Lord of all, bestowing

1885. His riches on all who

  1886. call on Him.

  1887. For everyone who calls

1888. on the name of the Lord

  1889. will be saved.

  1890. Then Paul says this,

  1891. how then will they

1892. call on Him in whom

  1893. they have not believed?

  1894. How are they to

1895. believe in Him of whom

  1896. they've never heard?

1897. And how are they to

  1898. hear without someone

  1899. preaching?

1900. And how are they to

  1901. preach unless they are

  1902. sent?

  1903. As it is written,

  1904. how beautiful are the

  1905. feet of those who

  1906. preach the good news.

  1907. That's a quote of

  1908. Isaiah.

1909. But they have not all

  1910. obeyed the gospel,

  1911. for Isaiah says,

  1912. Lord who has believed

  1913. what he had heard

  1914. from us.

1915. And Paul sums up and

  1916. says, so faith comes

  1917. from hearing and hearing

  1918. through the word of

  1919. Christ.

1920. You see what Paul is

  1921. saying here?

  1922. He's saying that the

1923. church is part of this

  1924. preaching of the word,

  1925. right?

  1926. This isn't something,

  1927. I don't think Paul is

  1928. just describing here

  1929. simply the apostolic

  1930. work, but the ongoing

  1931. work of the church.

  1932. The reformers used to

1933. say that the word of

  1934. God preached is the

  1935. word of God.

  1936. Luther used to call

  1937. church, like when we

  1938. gather for church,

  1939. God's mouth house.

  1940. Isn't that great?

  1941. What if we started

  1942. talking about that on

  1943. Sunday?

1944. We could post it on

  1945. Instagram.

  1946. Come to God's mouth

  1947. house this Sunday

  1948. morning.

1949. What do they mean by

  1950. all that?

  1951. They meant that when

  1952. we preach the biblical

  1953. gospel,

  1954. when we preach the

  1955. Christ of scripture,

  1956. when we prayerfully

  1957. bind ourselves to the

  1958. written word of God

  1959. that is living and

  1960. active, when we do

  1961. that, the same spirit

  1962. who bore witness

  1963. through the apostles

  1964. and who breathed out

  1965. the written word

  1966. continues to make

  1967. Christ known through

  1968. our scripture-saturated

  1969. words.

  1970. Now, of course,

  1971. there's a big

  1972. distinction between

  1973. this and this,

  1974. right?

  1975. Our words,

  1976. our proclamation

  1977. carries no authority

  1978. in itself.

  1979. The preaching of the

  1980. church is only

  1981. authoritative insofar as

  1982. it says,

  1983. scripture says.

  1984. But when we declare

  1985. what scripture says,

  1986. the spirit advances his

  1987. work of making Christ

  1988. known.

  1989. As a sidebar,

  1990. this is why,

  1991. by the way,

  1992. we preach expositionally

  1993. at Trinity,

  1994. because we believe that

1995. the Holy Spirit is the

1996. Lord, the giver of life,

  1997. not us.

1998. And we want his words

1999. to be the fountain of

  2000. all of our words.

2001. The sword of the spirit,

  2002. Paul writes,

2003. is the word of God.

2004. That's why if you go to

  2005. a small group,

  2006. you're going to be

  2007. studying the Bible.

2008. That's why if you come

  2009. to Tyler's theology group

  2010. every other Friday,

2011. they're not just going to

  2012. be reading Grudem.

  2013. Forget about Grudem.

  2014. They're going to be

  2015. looking at the word,

  2016. right?

  2017. Grudem's a good help.

  2018. He's a good teacher,

  2019. right?

  2020. When we speak and

  2021. declare and proclaim

  2022. what scripture says,

  2023. the spirit is honored

  2024. and glorified,

  2025. and he advances his

  2026. work of glorifying Christ

  2027. and making him known.

  2028. Okay, friends,

  2029. so this is how,

  2030. according to the New

  2031. Testament anyway,

2032. this is how the Holy

  2033. Spirit makes Christ

  2034. known.

  2035. By illuminating the

  2036. apostolic scriptures

  2037. in the hearts of

  2038. believers and in the

  2039. proclamation of the

  2040. church.

  2041. There you go.

  2042. There's the summary

  2043. sentence.

  2044. He gives us an

  2045. objective word and

  2046. witness to Christ,

  2047. right?

  2048. First in the eyewitness

  2049. testimony of the

  2050. apostles,

  2051. then preserved and

  2052. breathed out in the

  2053. written scriptures.

  2054. He gives us that

  2055. objective word and

  2056. witness,

  2057. but along with that,

  2058. he comes and brings

  2059. internal subjective

  2060. illumination so that we

  2061. might receive it and

  2062. understand it,

  2063. which means that the

  2064. work is the spirits

  2065. from first to last,

2066. from the giving of the

  2067. word to the receiving

  2068. of the word.

  2069. It's his work,

  2070. not ours.

  2071. But friends,

  2072. isn't this a comfort?

  2073. Isn't this a comfort to

  2074. us?

2075. Do you want to draw near

  2076. to Christ?

2077. Do you want to know the

  2078. mighty wind of the

  2079. Spirit blowing through

  2080. your life?

2081. Do you want to hear

  2082. God's word about

  2083. himself, to himself,

  2084. to us?

2085. Do you want to know

  2086. the Spirit?

2087. Do you want to be in

  2088. step with the Spirit?

2089. Do you want to be awash

  2090. in the Spirit?

  2091. Where do you go?

  2092. What do you do?

2093. Well, friends, you go to

  2094. where he speaks.

2095. You go to where he's

  2096. breathing out his

  2097. life-giving power.

2098. In other words, you go

  2099. to the Scriptures.

2100. And you go to where

  2101. the Scriptures are being

  2102. faithfully lived and

  2103. taught.

  2104. That's where you'll find

2105. the power of the Spirit

  2106. at work.

2107. In the living word of

  2108. the Bible.

  2109. The Spirit's book.

  2110. Okay.

2111. We have 30 seconds for

  2112. questions.

  2113. Because I'm service

  2114. leaving this morning.

2115. No, we have a couple

  2116. minutes.

  2117. Yeah, I need it.

  2118. I have a question about

  2119. the category of

  2120. revelation.

  2121. Yeah.

  2122. Yeah.

  2123. Oh, yeah.

  2124. Mm-hmm.

  2125. Yes.

  2126. Yeah.

  2127. So I understand

2128. that you drop in with

  2129. Jesus, but for that,

  2130. there's some wonder

  2131. in awe.

  2132. Absolutely.

  2133. Yeah.

  2134. Yeah.

  2135. Yeah, that's right.

  2136. Yeah, it would be

2137. wonderful to do a whole

  2138. class on this because

  2139. there's so much rich

  2140. stuff there.

  2141. Yeah.

  2142. So Anita's referencing

  2143. general revelation,

  2144. which is the revelation

2145. that God makes to all

  2146. people at all times

  2147. and all places, right?

  2148. Through creation,

  2149. through our conscience,

  2150. through things like

  2151. that.

  2152. And what Scripture

  2153. teaches us about that

  2154. is that there are

  2155. certain things that

  2156. can be known about

  2157. God through generation,

  2158. but because we live

  2159. under the condition

  2160. of the fall,

  2161. Scripture is insufficient

2162. for us to really be

  2163. reconciled to God.

  2164. Yeah, Beth,

2165. you want to jump in on

  2166. this?

  2167. Oh, gosh, yes.

  2168. Thank you, Beth.

  2169. Creation is insufficient.

  2170. General revelation is

  2171. insufficient to bring us

2172. to a saving knowledge of

  2173. God because, because of

2174. the fall, our hearts turn

2175. away from those things to

  2176. idols.

2177. That's what Paul says in

  2178. Romans 1.

  2179. Yeah.

2180. But, but what that means

  2181. with the doctrine of

  2182. general revelation is also

2183. a comfort to us because it

2184. means that, that people do

2185. have a sense of God, right?

2186. They may be pushing it

2187. down, they may be pushing

2188. it out to other ways,

  2189. right?

2190. But God is, in a general

  2191. way, speaking about his

  2192. divine nature and his

2193. power at all times and

  2194. all ways.

  2195. We're obviously avoiding

  2196. that and deflecting that

  2197. as sinners, right?

2198. And we need, we need

  2199. what's called particular

  2200. revelation or special

  2201. revelation to break

  2202. through that.

  2203. But in our evangelism,

  2204. things like that, it's a

2205. great comfort to know that,

  2206. that we're not totally

2207. coming out of the blue,

  2208. as it were, right?

2209. Paul will say that, you

  2210. know, God has ordained

2211. things so that people will

  2212. feel after God, right?

  2213. They feel insufficiently.

2214. They feel in all the

2215. wrong ways, but still, we

2216. are still created in his

  2217. image, right?

  2218. Longing for him, reaching

2219. for him, though we know

2220. not, though we know it

  2221. not, right?

  2222. Yeah, good.

  2223. Yeah, Jeff?

  2224. I think there's a good

2225. summary of a lot of this

2226. is the opening three or

  2227. four verses in John,

  2228. where he says, you

2229. know, the word is with

2230. God and the word was

  2231. God.

  2232. Yeah, that's great.

2233. Those are to say that in

2234. him was light, and the

2235. light was the light of

2236. men, and the light shines

2237. in the darkness, but the

  2238. darkness did not

  2239. overpower it.

  2240. Right.

  2241. So it's really the

  2242. imagination of Jesus that

2243. the Spirit of God is

  2244. bringing to us.

  2245. It's union with Jesus.

2246. It's not just union with

  2247. the Spirit.

  2248. It's the Spirit

  2249. emanates Jesus.

  2250. That's right.

  2251. Thank you for that

  2252. clarification, Jeff.

2253. Did you hear what Jeff

  2254. said?

2255. Like, who is the Spirit

2256. witnessing to in all of

  2257. this?

  2258. To Christ, right?

2259. We could do a whole

  2260. other class about how

  2261. Scripture and the

  2262. Apostles'

  2263. proclamation, it's all

  2264. Christ-centered, right?

  2265. That's a bit of why I spent

2266. so much time at the beginning

2267. of the class talking about

2268. the Spirit's ministry in the

2269. life of Jesus, to then say,

2270. Jesus is saying, now the

  2271. Spirit will come and

  2272. testify about me, right?

  2273. Yeah?

2274. One of the things that

  2275. marks out the apostolic

2276. witness, right, is the way

  2277. they now understand the

  2278. Old Testament Scriptures

2279. and their own writings in

  2280. such a Christocentric

  2281. way.

  2282. Yeah.

  2283. That's really good.

  2284. Yep.

  2285. Yes, Julia, and then

  2286. we'll come up to

  2287. George.

  2288. We always see everything

  2289. behind the Jesus

  2290. formation, God.

  2291. Everything behind all the

  2292. time, God working.

  2293. Yeah.

  2294. With everything.

  2295. That's right.

  2296. Everything was a work

  2297. as it was behind

  2298. everything with God.

  2299. Yeah.

  2300. Yep.

  2301. God is at work.

  2302. Yep.

  2303. Yeah.

2304. Then they say, I give

2305. this love time in a

  2306. reader.

  2307. God doesn't do anything

  2308. today.

  2309. It's finished.

  2310. You know?

  2311. Ah, yeah.

  2312. Yeah.

  2313. God is everywhere.

2314. You know that, the book

  2315. spoken, the God, you

  2316. know, I have a book

  2317. called God.

  2318. Yeah.

  2319. It's very important.

  2320. Yeah.

  2321. Yeah.

  2322. Yeah.

  2323. Thank you, Julia.

  2324. Yeah.

  2325. George.

2326. Yeah, the Spirit is still

  2327. at work today.

  2328. Yes.

2329. So why can't there be

  2330. additional scriptures

  2331. added to the Bible?

  2332. Yeah.

  2333. Because the Spirit

  2334. inspired them.

  2335. Yeah.

  2336. Yeah.

  2337. What would they be

  2338. testifying to?

  2339. Same thing the other

  2340. scriptures testified to?

  2341. Right.

  2342. Glory and Christ?

  2343. Sure.

  2344. Did they, were they

  2345. eyewitnesses of Jesus

2346. the way the apostles were?

  2347. Was Paul?

  2348. Yes.

  2349. Well.

2350. Jesus met him on the

  2351. road to Emmaus.

  2352. Through a vision.

  2353. Yeah.

  2354. Yeah.

  2355. Yeah.

  2356. Yeah.

  2357. I have visions too.

  2358. Ah.

  2359. Paul, what Paul

  2360. experienced was unique

  2361. and he himself

  2362. understands it as unique.

  2363. Right?

  2364. He calls himself like

  2365. one untimely born.

  2366. Right?

2367. And actually, he distinguishes what he experienced from what other people experienced, right?

2368. We can talk more about that at another time.

2369. But Paul's experience of the risen Christ was unique amongst the other apostles,

2370. but was also unique from everyone else.

2371. This is what distinguishes, say, Paul's experience from, like, Joseph Smith's purported experience

2372. of whatever he reported, right, in the, what, 1800s, right?

  2373. Yeah.

2374. The other thing I'll say, George, is that Jesus didn't promise that there would be, you know,

2375. hundreds of years people would keep being inspired to give more and more revelation about me, right?

2376. He spoke those words to the apostles, right?

2377. And then they did that, yeah.

2378. So I don't think we should expect more apostolic witness because there's no more apostles, right?

2379. So can people understand the apostolic word?

2380. Can God bring a fresh understanding of that and, you know, really weigh it on us powerfully

2381. and help us unfold what the apostles taught and what is in Scripture reports?

  2382. Sure.

  2383. Yeah.

2384. You know, our work of understanding Scripture is never done, right?

2385. But adding new revelation to it, actually, we shouldn't even expect that because Christ has accomplished the work.

2386. He has given himself the authoritative witness.

2387. So there's, in fact, there's no more need for it because Scripture is sufficient, if that makes sense, right?

2388. So part of this, part of the answer to your question is the sufficiency of Scripture, that it's enough for us.

  2389. It's complete for us.

  2390. Yeah.

  2391. Yeah, Jeff.

2392. I think you brought up early in the verse where Jesus says the Spirit will bring to your members all that I have been.

2393. He was speaking to that specific people.

  2394. Right.

2395. He wasn't speaking in the future.

  2396. Right.

  2397. That's right.

2398. He was speaking to specific people.

  2399. To the apostles, yeah.

2400. And, of course, the apostles and people are written towards the latter part of their lives.

  2401. That's correct.

2402. He wouldn't be forgotten what he had been.

  2403. That's right.

  2404. That's right.

  2405. You read.

  2406. So I think that's another distinction.

  2407. That's right.

2408. He didn't bring to your remembrance what I had taught you, what I said to you.

  2409. Yeah.

2410. And he's not himself here in that way.

  2411. Right.

  2412. Right.

  2413. Yeah, that's good.

  2414. Yeah, that's good.

  2415. Yeah.

2416. Is it true that the Holy Spirit brings to our mind the things in Scripture?

  2417. Absolutely.

2418. But that verse from John's Gospel is not talking about us.

2419. That's talking about his authorized witnesses, his apostles whom he sent.

  2420. Yeah, that's right.

2421. Okay, friends, we have to close.

2422. I'm so sorry because we have to go next door for church for God's mouth house.

  2423. So, amen.

  2424. Amen.

2425. Go in peace and we'll see you next week.

  2426. Not mouth house.

  2427. Mouth house.

  2428. Mouth.
