  1. Well, all right. Hey, if you have a

  2. Bible or an app, open it up. We're going

  3. to be back in Acts chapter 17 this

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  4. morning. Acts 17,

  5. >> verses 10-15. We have continued our

  6. series over the book of Acts. And we've

  7. been looking at the story, really the

  8. birth of the New Testament church. And

  9. the reason we are taking so long to walk

  10. through this book is because I believe

  11. it's essential. It's vital. It's

  12. necessary. And plus, it is so important

  13. for us to understand who we are as God's

  14. children. Who has he called us to be?

  15. What has he called us to do? What are

  16. the expectations that God has for us as

  17. his sons, as his daughters, as his

  18. people, as a church planted right here

  19. in the orange grove community who has

  20. been called to minister not just here,

  21. but to the surrounding areas. What does

  22. that look like for us? And I believe

  23. when we look at the story of the birth

  24. of the New Testament church, the story

  25. of God's people being saved and filled

  26. with the indwelling power of the Holy

  27. Spirit being put on mission, being

  28. equipped, and regardless of oppression,

  29. persecution,

  30. this desire from the enemy to silence

  31. the truth of the gospel, we see that it

  32. continues to go forward. And I know that

  33. I've said this countless times

  34. throughout this series. You cannot

  35. silence the truth of who God is and what

  36. his word declares. And one thing that

  37. we've learned particularly in the

  38. passages that we've looked at over the

  39. past couple of weeks is that there has

  40. been this attempt to silence the truth

  41. of God's word. And that's not an attempt

  42. that was or is exclusive to the Bible.

  43. That is something that continues today.

  44. There is a desire

  45. to silence the gospel because the gospel

  46. is set on glorifying who God is and

  47. resurrecting people, resurrecting you

  48. out of death and sin to life

  49. everlasting.

  50. The devil and his demons hate that.

  51. They know what their end is. They know

  52. that they are fighting a losing battle.

  53. And so they are going to attempt to

  54. steal, kill, and destroy anyone and

  55. everyone who will give them an ear, who

  56. will lean into even the partial truths

  57. [snorts]

  58. that they'll attempt to claim, all with

  59. a hope of pulling you away from Jesus.

  60. Do you know how we combat that?

  61. By knowing the truth of God's word.

  62. We've said this time and time again. If

  63. you've been uh part of the Grove here

  64. for the last couple of years, this is uh

  65. this doesn't fall uh on you as a

  66. mystery. The world has an agenda.

  67. Evil has an agenda. The world has a

  68. truth. Quotations, a truth, which is

  69. really not the truth at all, which is a

  70. lie that is meant for nothing more than

  71. to pull you away from God's plan,

  72. purpose, and will for your life. And if

  73. we don't know the scriptures, if we

  74. don't know the truth of God's word, then

  75. we'll believe anything so long as it's

  76. palatable.

  77. And we've also been challenged with

  78. this.

  79. The bestselling book of all time is

  80. right here.

  81. >> The bestselling book of all time. But do

  82. you know what is so concerning today?

  83. Not just statistically around the world,

  84. but within the church,

  85. biblical illiteracy rates have

  86. skyrocketed.

  87. What does that mean? That means people

  88. who claim church membership, people who

  89. have claimed to place their hope, faith,

  90. and trust in Jesus Christ, don't know

  91. the scriptures.

  92. They don't know the Ten Commandments.

  93. They don't know Psalm 23. They don't

  94. know the story of Elijah. They don't

  95. know the story of Daniel. They don't

  96. know the story of Shadrach, Meshack, and

  97. Abedneo. They don't know the creation

  98. accounts.

  99. And this is not just new Christians.

  100. That would be expected. baby Christians,

  101. but these are people who have been in

  102. church pews their whole life, who have

  103. spent decades going from Bible study to

  104. Bible study, Sunday school, Sunday

  105. school, sitting under the teaching of

  106. faithful ministers and preachers

  107. and at the end of the and at the end of

  108. the day don't know their Bible.

  109. And if we don't know our Bible, then how

  110. can we ever combat and call out the lies

  111. of the enemy against the truth of God's

  112. word? I believe this is where our

  113. passage speaks this morning. In Acts

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  114. chapter 17, we'll look at verses 10

  115. through 15. Fall Paul finds himself in

  116. Berea.

  117. I heard a brother tell me this morning

  118. he probably went to go have the tacos.

  119. Some of y'all are getting it. Some of

  120. y'all will get it later.

  121. And it was his custom as he went to city

  122. to city, town to town to enter into the

  123. synagogues to sit and to teach. And we

  124. find that when Paul preaches the gospel,

  125. people respond in faith. Praise the

  126. Lord. We'll find again that people

  127. respond in anger and bitterness and

  128. oppression. And yet another attempt to

  129. silence the gospel. And here's a pattern

  130. that I really want us to recognize

  131. before we dive into the text. Paul from

  132. town to town, he's gone from Philippi

  133. to Thessalonica

  134. and now he's in Berea. And remember, at

  135. one point in the beginning of Acts

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  136. chapter 16, he had a desire to continue

  137. into the Middle East, to continue in the

  138. region surrounding Jerusalem and and

  139. Galilee. And you remember every time he

  140. tried to walk through a door, the Holy

  141. Spirit put the brakes on him until he

  142. had what we call the Macedonian call,

  143. the Macedonian vision. And he saw an

  144. outpouring of the spirit there. And so

  145. the Holy Spirit opens this door for Paul

  146. to now go into Europe. And so the gospel

  147. is progressing. The gospel is moving

  148. forward. We're seeing the ripples of

  149. that seed of the life, death, and

  150. ministry of Jesus begin to expand

  151. outward. What we're seeing is the great

  152. commission being accomplished. Acts

  153. chapter 1:8 being fulfilled. And it's

  154. all done through the power of the Holy

  155. Spirit. Now, let me just bring some

  156. clarity to us in case we're missing it.

  157. Those ripples are still extending today.

  158. We don't look at the gospel story. We

  159. don't look at the great commission. We

  160. don't look at the great call and think

  161. that was for them.

  162. We don't look at how the gospel has been

  163. spread around the world through

  164. missionaries

  165. and churches that take time to invest in

  166. gospel proclamation and kingdom

  167. expansion and think, "Well, that's good

  168. for them."

  169. Don't remove yourself from the mission

  170. God has called the church to accomplish.

  171. Because if you claim to be his daughter,

  172. if you claim to be his son, guess what?

  173. That's your mission.

  174. It's not just the mission for

  175. missionaries. It's not just the mission

  176. for paid staff. It's not just the

  177. mission for team volunteers. It's your

  178. mission. teachers, as you teach in the

  179. classroom, salesmen, as you're on the

  180. sales call, as you're sitting at the

  181. restaurant, engaging with the server, as

  182. you're buying groceries and greeting the

  183. the the individual running the register.

  184. This is your mission. This is our

  185. mission to proclaim the gospel. And so

  186. Paul goes into Europe. And is it easy

  187. for Paul? Not at all. He's beaten. He's

  188. wounded. He's thrown in prison. He's

  189. taken before the court and he's told to

  190. stop doing what he's doing. And yet he

  191. continues.

  192. Why do you think Paul continues?

  193. Because he believes the truth of God's

  194. word. He's experienced the truth of

  195. God's word. He's had an encounter with

  196. the risen Christ. And did you know that

  197. if you call yourself a Christian here

  198. today, it's because you had an encounter

  199. with the risen Christ.

  200. He's called you out of slavery and sin.

  201. And he has set you free into eternal

  202. life. And he's done it out of his great

  203. and grand love for you, through his

  204. grace, through his mercy. Not because of

  205. anything that we've gained or merited,

  206. but only because of who he is. So here's

  207. a question I want to challenge us with

  208. before we dive into the text.

  209. What does it look like to be shaped by

  210. God's word? Now, we'll look at this

  211. particular instance with Paul and Berea,

  212. but I want you to think about men. What

  213. does it look like for your marriage to

  214. be shaped by God's word? What does it

  215. look like for your fathering to be

  216. shaped by God's word? What does it look

  217. like for you to serve this church to be

  218. shaped by God's word? What does that

  219. look like for you? The the same question

  220. applies to the women in the room. What

  221. does it look like to be shaped by God's

  222. word? Now, attack that question

  223. individually. And then what we want to

  224. do is look at it corporately.

  225. What does it look like for the grove to

  226. be shaped by God's word? We get some

  227. great insight here

  228. in Acts 17, beginning in verse 10.

  229. Here's what Luke writes.

  230. As soon as it was night, the brothers

  231. and sisters sent Paul and Silas away to

  232. Berea.

  233. Now, why send them at night? Well,

  234. remember Paul and Silas were still

  235. suffering oppression and persecution

  236. because they refused to quit preaching

  237. the gospel.

  238. And so, they're sent away to Berea. And

  239. here's what's interesting. Side note for

  240. uh biblical nerds in the room, what you

  241. see happening, and this reminds me of

  242. what Joseph tells us at the end of

  243. Genesis. If you're unfamiliar with the

  244. story of Joseph, let me give you a quick

  245. cliffnotes version. Treated badly by his

  246. brothers, sold into slavery, ends up in

  247. Egypt, things don't go his way for a

  248. long time. But even through oppression,

  249. even through darkness, even through

  250. trial, hardships, and tribulation,

  251. Joseph has the hand of God on him, and

  252. he finds himself in Egypt, second in

  253. command to Pharaoh. There is a famine

  254. that breaks out throughout the land. His

  255. family, his kinsmen are starving.

  256. They're risking death. They find

  257. themselves back in Egypt. Joseph is

  258. there. They realize Joseph is there.

  259. They're scared that Joseph is going to

  260. kill them because, hey, they were mean

  261. to Joseph. They sold him into slavery

  262. back when he was younger. And Joseph

  263. said, "What you meant for evil, God

  264. meant for what?

  265. >> God meant for good." And then Paul will

  266. reiterate this in his letter to the

  267. Romans. He'll say, "God works all things

  268. for the good of those who love him, who

  269. will live their life according to his

  270. good, pleasing, and perfect will." Now,

  271. here's what's really cool. Here's the

  272. connection. Paul and Silas are facing

  273. persecution.

  274. And because they're facing persecution,

  275. they they go from town to town to town.

  276. And from going from town to town to

  277. town, because they're running from the

  278. persecution, what's the result when they

  279. go from town to town?

  280. the gospel's being proclaimed.

  281. [snorts] And so what the world means for

  282. evil, God means for good. It's an

  283. incredible, incredible story that we see

  284. here.

  285. Upon arrival, verse 10, they went into

  286. the synagogue of the Jews. The people

  287. here were of more noble character. Now,

  288. that's a key phrase there because Luke

  289. doesn't say that about the people in

  290. Philippi, nor does he say that about the

  291. people in Thessalonica, but he says that

  292. about the people in Berea.

  293. Why does Paul make that distinction?

  294. It's not that they had more worth and

  295. value than the people of Thessalonica or

  296. the people of Philippi there. But yet,

  297. there is something distinct that Luke is

  298. drawing our attention to so that we

  299. would gain a greater understanding of

  300. what's happening here. And he tells us

  301. here in the following verse, they were

  302. of more noble character than those in

  303. Thessalonica since

  304. they received the word with eagerness

  305. and examined the scriptures daily to see

  306. these things were. So

  307. notice that noble character is tied to

  308. what?

  309. Receiving the word with eagerness and

  310. examining the scriptures daily.

  311. My hope and my prayer as your pastor as

  312. we go from Sunday to Sunday, week to

  313. week, my hope and my prayer is always

  314. the same. Is that you would be a people

  315. who come in here with an eagerness to

  316. hear God's word.

  317. That you come in here with a desire to

  318. examine God's word. We're going to dive

  319. into this here in just a moment. This is

  320. this is the core of the passage. What I

  321. don't ever want is that you come in here

  322. and you listen to a great worship set

  323. and you listen to a great sermon, but

  324. when you go out there, you never open up

  325. the scriptures for yourself.

  326. Cuz the way that you grow spiritually,

  327. the way that you become the son and

  328. daughter, the way that you become the

  329. man and the woman of God, the person

  330. he's called you to be, is by engaging in

  331. the scriptures. And we live in a world

  332. today sadly where so many people are

  333. Christian by proxy. Roland, what do you

  334. mean by that? The extent of their

  335. Christianity is sitting under the

  336. teaching of someone else. Nothing wrong

  337. with great teaching. Nothing wrong with

  338. an amazing worship set. Praise God for

  339. the growth. Can I just brag on this

  340. church for just a moment?

  341. You are blessed to attend the church

  342. that you attend

  343. because we have leadership. We have

  344. volunteers. We have people that give of

  345. their time, talent, and treasures to

  346. ensure one thing and one thing alone,

  347. that the name of Christ is praised.

  348. >> And when the name of Christ is praised,

  349. guess what? That overflows into

  350. everything that we do and everything

  351. that we are.

  352. And yet so many people in our world

  353. today will sit in church their entire

  354. life

  355. under the teaching of someone else

  356. without ever examining the scriptures to

  357. see if those teachings are true. Which

  358. is why we have so many distortions of

  359. the gospel today.

  360. And that creates a doorway for the enemy

  361. to sneak in, to creep into your

  362. spiritual life and stir beliefs,

  363. ideologies,

  364. and things that you hold fast to that

  365. when compared to scripture have no

  366. bearing on the foundation of what the

  367. gospel is. Continue verse 12.

  368. Consequently, in other words, as a

  369. result, many of them believed, including

  370. the number of prominent women as well as

  371. men. Here's another side note for

  372. biblical nerds in the room. What have we

  373. seen consistently in the story of

  374. Philippi, in the story of Thessalonica,

  375. and in the story of Berea?

  376. We have seen Luke specifically mention

  377. women being saved and women serving in

  378. the church in a culture

  379. when women oftent times were viewed as

  380. less than. I think it's incredible how

  381. it is just another

  382. nugget that the Bible shows us that the

  383. gospel is here to turn the culture

  384. upside down. That's what they were

  385. accused of back earlier in Acts chapter

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  386. 17. That they are turning the world

  387. upside down. Verse 13.

  388. But when the Jews from Thessalonica

  389. found out that the word of God had been

  390. proclaimed by Paul at Berea, they came

  391. there too, agitating and upsetting the

  392. crowds. Then the brothers and sisters

  393. immediately sent Paul away to go to the

  394. coast, but Silas and Timothy stayed on

  395. there. Those who escorted Paul brought

  396. him as far as Athens. And after

  397. receiving instruction for Silas and

  398. Timothy to come to him as quickly as

  399. possible, they departed. And all God's

  400. people said,

  401. >> "Amen."

  402. >> Lord, would you bless your word? Holy

  403. Spirit, would you stir our hearts today?

  404. What does it look like to become people

  405. shaped by the word? Because we can be

  406. people who hear a lot about the Bible

  407. without ever actually knowing our

  408. Bibles.

  409. You know, in our technologically

  410. advanced society,

  411. we can be swiping through the algorithm.

  412. We can be listening to podcasts. We can

  413. be hearing YouTube videos and watching

  414. sermons all day long and following

  415. Christian influencers and having a whole

  416. bunch of Bible devotions, Bible apps,

  417. and Bible commentaries. We have a lot at

  418. our disposal that tells us a lot about

  419. the Bible. But have you ever really

  420. taken the time to search the Bible for

  421. yourself? And and maybe you fall into

  422. this category. I know often times when

  423. I'm not careful, I do as well. I'll hear

  424. something really good. I'll hear

  425. something that even elicits an amen.

  426. And I'll take it as truth and I'll take

  427. it as fact.

  428. And it might indeed be truth. IN FACT,

  429. PRAISE GOD FOR THAT. PRAISE God for

  430. faithful preachers who preach the truth.

  431. BUT WHAT THIS PASSAGE CALLS US TO DO,

  432. WHO the Bible calls us to be, is a

  433. people who believe it, not because

  434. somebody said it, but because God

  435. declares it. Do you see the difference,

  436. understanding what truth is and who the

  437. truth is. So, so here's what I want to

  438. do. As always, let's go back through our

  439. passage. Let's draw out some scenes here

  440. that that I believe we could apply to

  441. our life. Things that'll help us grow

  442. when it comes to being shaped by God's

  443. word. We can learn a thing or two from

  444. this instance here in Berea. Because

  445. what we see is this pattern, this rhythm

  446. of what it looks like to be a people

  447. shaped by God's word. And my hope and my

  448. prayer is that if this is you at the end

  449. of the day, praise God. This has served

  450. as God's way to affirm that you are on

  451. the right path in growing in his word.

  452. Remember that's one of the values here

  453. at the grove. Growing in God's word

  454. together. And growing in God's word

  455. assumes, and maybe I need to clarify

  456. this because maybe we don't know,

  457. assumes that you're growing personally

  458. in God's word. that you're taking the

  459. time to search the scriptures for

  460. yourself. So, if you're taking notes,

  461. here's the first thing that we see.

  462. When we're shaped by God's word, we

  463. receive the word with eagerness.

  464. Now, again, let me just clarify. When we

  465. talk about the word, we're talking about

  466. the word of God.

  467. Genesis to Revelation and everything in

  468. between. Even the things that challenge

  469. us, even the things that leave us

  470. scratching our head. Have you ever read

  471. a Bible story, a Bible passage,

  472. particularly in the Old Testament, and

  473. thought, "What in the world is going

  474. on?"

  475. That's why examining the scriptures are

  476. so important because part of examining

  477. the scriptures is examining the cultural

  478. context, the audience it was written to

  479. and the time period in which these

  480. things, these letters, these truths were

  481. written. [clears throat]

  482. Can you imagine, or let me phrase it

  483. this way, one of the main things that

  484. they do for missionaries

  485. in regards to training when they're

  486. going across the globe on the other side

  487. of the world to preach the gospel, the

  488. first thing they teach them is the

  489. culture they're going into.

  490. Because once they understand the

  491. culture, then they can see the best

  492. avenue forward, the best pathway to

  493. connect the gospel to the reality of

  494. whoever they're going to read. The same

  495. is true when we're examining the

  496. scriptures.

  497. We have to study the context, the

  498. culture, the history in which it was

  499. written. And I'm not saying you have to

  500. go to a seminary class, that you have to

  501. earn a PhD in biblical doctrine or

  502. theology. Praise God.

  503. that we live in such a advanced,

  504. technically advanced society that we

  505. have the world's library at our

  506. fingertips.

  507. And it won't take long when you're doing

  508. diligent study to examine all those

  509. things that we're called to examine when

  510. it comes to studying the word of God.

  511. And so notice in verses 10- 11, this is

  512. the first thing Luke tells us about the

  513. Bereans.

  514. As soon as it was night, the brothers

  515. and sisters sent Paul and Silas away to

  516. Berea. Upon arrival, they went into the

  517. synagogue of the Jews. The people here

  518. were of more noble character than those

  519. in Thessalonica

  520. since they received the word with

  521. eagerness.

  522. I think there's something incredible

  523. that we can learn from that posture.

  524. This demonstrates not just a posture of

  525. leaning in. And I want you guys to

  526. picture that. They sat in their chairs

  527. and they heard Paul teach and they they

  528. leaned in. They leaned in with their

  529. mind, their ears, their heart, and their

  530. soul. There was a genuine eagerness, an

  531. excitement,

  532. a underscoring passion to know the truth

  533. of God's word. And you say, "Well,

  534. Roland, what does that feel like?" THINK

  535. ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE FOOTBALL TEAM.

  536. And you're going to watch them UT fans

  537. in the house. I'm sorry.

  538. But think about what you enjoy the most.

  539. And you're eager to lean in. You're

  540. eager to learn. You're eager to grow.

  541. Men, think about when you first saw your

  542. boo.

  543. How eager you were to lean in. Men,

  544. think about when hunting season rolls

  545. around.

  546. how eager you are to lean in. This is

  547. the posture we're to have for the word

  548. of God. This is the picture that's being

  549. painted here. They're not hostile.

  550. They're not indifferent. They aren't

  551. sitting waiting to criticize. They're

  552. willing to listen. their minds, their

  553. heart, their soul is open to the

  554. possibility THAT GOD MAY SHOW THEM

  555. something that they didn't previously

  556. know.

  557. They're eager to hear the word of God.

  558. Now, now here's here's why this is

  559. incredible. Again, let's look at the

  560. context here. What did Paul just preach

  561. in Thessalonica?

  562. Paul preached that the Messiah had to

  563. suffer and die. And not just that the

  564. Messiah had to suffer and die. Paul is

  565. preaching Jesus is that Messiah. So the

  566. message, the gospel that Paul's

  567. preaching is challenging

  568. all their religious and spiritual

  569. categories,

  570. which is tough for a Jewish individual

  571. in this particular time, which is why

  572. the Pharisees hated Jesus because he was

  573. challenging what they thought. He was

  574. challenging what they believed. But the

  575. Bereans don't respond with hostility.

  576. They don't respond, "Well, let's hear

  577. what this guy has to say." No, they're

  578. eager to learn. They're eager to lean

  579. in. They listened not with the intent to

  580. respond, but with the intent to

  581. understand.

  582. That's not just a truth that is good for

  583. this. That's a truth that is good for

  584. all forms of communication

  585. that we lean in to truly understand.

  586. This is why later in his letter to

  587. Timothy because remember Timothy sticks

  588. around here in Berea

  589. he writes to Timothy and he says the

  590. word of God is inspired.

  591. This right here is inspired. That word

  592. in the Greek inspired means it's God

  593. breathed.

  594. These are the words of God. You want to

  595. know the God of creation. You want to

  596. know the father of heaven. You want to

  597. get to know the one whose words

  598. spoke creation into existence.

  599. The galaxies, the moon, the stars, the

  600. planets, the ever expanding galaxy that

  601. we live in. You want to get to know him?

  602. He spoke to us right here. And Paul says

  603. his word is inspired. And it's not just

  604. inspired. It's meant for something. It's

  605. meant to correct you, to rebuke you, to

  606. train you up to become all that he has

  607. called you to be and all that he has

  608. created you to be. And to receive that,

  609. it begins with a spirit of humility.

  610. So when we come in here with an eager

  611. spirit, it's because we come in here

  612. with a desire to listen because there

  613. may be something in my life that needs

  614. correction. And I want to be open and

  615. willing to the correction from my father

  616. who is in heaven to guide me in the

  617. right path to steer me in the right

  618. direction.

  619. To call out the sin

  620. that I so pridefully cling to and refuse

  621. to let go because it feels good.

  622. But when we come and hear the word with

  623. eagerness,

  624. life changes. Here's a prayer I want us

  625. to have. I wrote it down cuz I wanted to

  626. get it right. I'll send this out in in

  627. my email this week. Here's the prayer

  628. that we should all have

  629. when we go into a service, when we just

  630. go into a moment with the Lord that we

  631. would pray, "Lord, if there is something

  632. I need to see, show it to me.

  633. And if there is something I need to

  634. change, then change me.

  635. How often, how eager are we to go before

  636. the Lord with those prayers? The Bereans

  637. show us what that eagerness looks like.

  638. God speaks [snorts] and I want to hear

  639. what he has to say. Here's the second

  640. thing that we see. To be shaped by the

  641. word, we're called to examine the word

  642. with discernment. which we've already

  643. touched up on that

  644. to examine the word with the sermon. I

  645. think this is where Luke, he really hits

  646. the pause button. He steps on the

  647. brakes. He slows down because not only

  648. do we see the Bereans

  649. eagerly receiving the word of God. They

  650. wanted to be taught. They wanted to hear

  651. what Paul had to say. There was a

  652. genuine desire to understand the gospel.

  653. But it didn't stop there. What does the

  654. scripture tell us here? Look at verse

  655. 11.

  656. It says, "They examined

  657. the scriptures daily

  658. to see if these things were so."

  659. They didn't believe it because a man

  660. said it.

  661. They believed it because God said it.

  662. And do you know the role of any

  663. preacher, the role of of anyone called

  664. by God to proclaim the gospel is not to

  665. speak their own words. Now, everybody

  666. has a particular method, a particular

  667. style, a particular characteristics and

  668. tone that they're gifted with that they

  669. use in service to the kingdom of God.

  670. But sermons should never be man's words.

  671. They should always be filled with the

  672. truth of God's word. And this is what

  673. the Bereans were examining.

  674. Likely they had known of the reputation

  675. of Paul.

  676. Elsewhere in the scripture, we read that

  677. that Paul enters into cities. He enters

  678. into synagogues and people are fearful

  679. because they know of Paul's past. They

  680. know of the man he used to be.

  681. And the Bereans likely knew that as

  682. well. But they still leaned in to hear

  683. the word. And upon hearing the word,

  684. they examined

  685. the scriptures. That word examining it

  686. carries this idea of careful

  687. investigation.

  688. I really want to get underneath the

  689. surface. I want to understand what he is

  690. saying. And with any sermon that you

  691. hear, any Bible that you sit in on, any

  692. service that you are a part of, you have

  693. the truth at your fingertips,

  694. to be able to open it up and to say,

  695. "Oh, yeah, that is true." Or to open up

  696. and to say, "Preacher, you're way off

  697. base cuz that's not what the Bible says.

  698. That's not what God's truth is

  699. declaring."

  700. And that can't be known unless you are

  701. examining the scriptures for yourself.

  702. And let me just say this, we've

  703. mentioned this before. If you're ever in

  704. a church service and the preacher never

  705. opens up his Bible, he never says,

  706. "Let's read the text. Let's preach the

  707. text. Let's live the text."

  708. Then you need to not be under that

  709. preacher's teaching

  710. because it must be the truth of God's

  711. word. So there must be careful

  712. examination. That's what we see the

  713. Bereans doing. They weren't casually

  714. glancing through scripture. They weren't

  715. taking the time to study. And often the

  716. rebuttal against something like this is,

  717. "Well, they likely had time, Roland."

  718. Yes, they likely had more time than we

  719. have, but only because we're distracted

  720. by so many things.

  721. John Piper,

  722. he is uh one of the uh more famous

  723. theologians of our time. He'll go down

  724. in history, I think, as being listed

  725. among uh the people like the Wesley

  726. brothers or or Charles Spurgeon. He

  727. said, "One of the things social media

  728. will prove in these last days is that

  729. prayerlessness

  730. was not due to a lack of time."

  731. What does he mean? What he means is we

  732. have the time. We just choose to spend

  733. it on things that compared to eternity

  734. have no value.

  735. If I haven't been clear already, you

  736. have the time to study the scripture.

  737. Everyone in here has the time to study

  738. the scripture. Whether it's for 10

  739. minutes a day, whether it's for three

  740. hours out of the day, you have the time

  741. to study the scriptures. We're called to

  742. be a people that examine it. And so Luke

  743. praises them for it. And as they're

  744. studying the scriptures, one thing I

  745. also want us to notice, the Bereans are

  746. asking a question. Did you pick up on

  747. that?

  748. They examine the scriptures daily to see

  749. what

  750. if these things were true.

  751. There is purpose in examining the

  752. scriptures. Now, I'm all for opening up

  753. the scriptures to be encouraged. I'm all

  754. for opening up the scriptures to be

  755. filled with God's word. But what should

  756. always take precedent and what should

  757. always be central is not let me hear

  758. God's word so that I would feel good is

  759. let me hear God's word so that I would

  760. know what's true.

  761. Because an examination, a deep

  762. examination of God's word at some point

  763. in our spiritual walk is not going to

  764. feel good because it's going to bring

  765. accountability to our life.

  766. It's going to sting. It's going to hurt.

  767. And there's going to be moments, okay,

  768. Holy Spirit, I got it. That's where I

  769. need to change. That's where I need to

  770. repent. That's where I need to do

  771. better. This is what examining the word

  772. does with discernment.

  773. And so may this may be one of the most

  774. important, if not the most important

  775. habits that we can develop as

  776. Christians.

  777. We are called to be a people who open

  778. our Bibles. Now whether you do that

  779. through an app or whether you do that

  780. through a printed copy, the point is

  781. that you would take time to examine the

  782. scriptures. Don't just listen.

  783. Examine,

  784. search the scriptures. And don't just

  785. ask, "Will this encourage me?" Ask, "Is

  786. this true?" And here's the last thing

  787. that we see. We've seen it over the last

  788. couple of chapters that we've been to. A

  789. people shaped by the word are a people

  790. who respond to the word in faith.

  791. Now, now let me bring some clarity to

  792. that.

  793. There is power in the word of God.

  794. There's there's no doubt about that.

  795. Every Christian can point to the power

  796. of God's word, the power of the truth to

  797. bring transformation and change to our

  798. life. But a reading of the Bible doesn't

  799. guarantee change and transformation.

  800. Roland, what do you mean? The only

  801. person who can change your life is

  802. Jesus.

  803. Knowing the Bible doesn't necessarily

  804. transform your life. How do I know that?

  805. The Pharisees knew the Bible.

  806. THE DEVIL AND his demons know the Bible,

  807. but their life is far from the Lord. So,

  808. I don't want you to leave here thinking,

  809. "Oh, the preacher just wants me to know

  810. my Bible better." I do, but I want you

  811. to know its author better.

  812. Because when you know him better, then

  813. your life is transformed and your life

  814. is changed. And what the word does, the

  815. written word pointed to the living word.

  816. And so often people will only focus on

  817. the written word without ever paying

  818. attention to the living word. And if you

  819. don't know who the living word is,

  820. John's gospel chapter 1 shows us that

  821. the living word is Jesus Christ. Go with

  822. me to verse 12. We'll close on this.

  823. Consequently, this means as a result

  824. because of well, as a result of what?

  825. Because of what? Because of receiving

  826. the word with eagerness and examining

  827. the scriptures daily to see if the

  828. things were true. The result is many

  829. people believed.

  830. They realized Jesus is the Messiah.

  831. That all the law, all the prophets

  832. weren't there to terminate on

  833. themselves. And it wasn't exclusive to

  834. the time period of the Old Testament,

  835. but it was this arrow pointing forward,

  836. pointing to Christ, the Messiah, the

  837. lamb of God, who's come to take away the

  838. sins of the world. And yes, he had to

  839. suffer. Yes, he had to die. And yet, he

  840. didn't stay dead. He rose from the

  841. grave. And they respond in

  842. faith.

  843. Their examination of the scriptures, it

  844. didn't lead them away from Jesus. It

  845. brought them closer to Jesus.

  846. This is why in Romans chap 10:1 17,

  847. here's what Paul will write.

  848. Faith comes from what is heard.

  849. And what is heard comes through the

  850. message about Christ.

  851. The Bereans didn't receive salvation

  852. because they became excellent Bible

  853. students.

  854. They searched the scriptures. They

  855. encountered the truth about Jesus and

  856. they responded in faith. And that's the

  857. goal.

  858. The goal of the scripture is not just

  859. more Bible information. The goal of the

  860. scripture is Jesus Christ himself

  861. to walk with him to grow with him to

  862. live a life that is always being

  863. transformed by his truths. You and I

  864. will always be a work in progress. This

  865. side of heaven, we are a work in

  866. progress. From the youngest of us to the

  867. oldest of us, from the most immature of

  868. Christian to the most mature of

  869. Christian, we are a work in progress. We

  870. are always being held accountable for

  871. areas in our life where we need to

  872. repent and where we need to get

  873. sharpened. And the word of God exposes

  874. that to us. Which is why to be a people

  875. shaped by the word,

  876. let us hear. Let us receive the word

  877. with eagerness.

  878. Let us examine the scriptures

  879. diligently.

  880. And at the end of the day, a response

  881. needs to happen. We say this so often.

  882. When the gospel is proclaimed, a

  883. response is required. There is no middle

  884. ground when it comes to responding to

  885. the gospel. You either are in or you are

  886. out. We like to play this game where

  887. we're halfway in, halfway out. We'll be

  888. in when we're around one crowd. We'll be

  889. in on a Sunday morning back in the

  890. office. We'll be out around a certain

  891. group of people. We'll be out. You're

  892. out. You're not in. You're either all in

  893. or you're all out. There's no middle

  894. ground. And I think one of the biggest

  895. deceptions in our world today is the

  896. devil making people believe that they're

  897. in when they're not. That they can be

  898. one way around one group of people and

  899. another way around another group of

  900. people. And as long as they check church

  901. off the box, as long as they can

  902. memorize John 3:16, and they might even

    John 3:16

  903. know the process of grace and mercy in

  904. regards to the gospel, but their hearts

  905. are still far from the Lord. Maybe

  906. that's you today.

  907. If that's you, today is the day of your

  908. salvation.

  909. The day that you call upon the Lord in

  910. faith, that you repent of your sins, and

  911. that you walk in a changed and

  912. transformed life.

  913. You can leave here this morning knowing

  914. where you will spend eternity because of

  915. the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  916. Romans 10:9 says that if you confess

    Romans 10:9

  917. with your mouth that Jesus Christ is

  918. Lord and believe in your heart that God

  919. raised him from the dead, you shall be

  920. saved. Let's pray.

  921. Lord, thank you for your word. Thank you

  922. for your truth.

  923. Thank you for the transforming power

  924. of the gospel.

  925. Lord, we pray that you would continue to

  926. stir hearts and lives, bring change and

  927. transformation,

  928. and perhaps today for some is a day of

  929. their salvation. Jesus, we ask these

  930. things in your holy name. All God's

  931. people said, "Amen." Hey, let's stand

  932. together. Let's sing together. Let this

  933. be our prayer, our declaration of who

  934. our savior is. Our altar is going to be

  935. open. We're going to enter now into a

  936. time of response.

  937. But even beyond the stage, even beyond

  938. the conclusion of this service, your

  939. response to what you just heard today

  940. continues into your Monday. [music]

  941. And so if you'd like to pray about that,

  942. our altar is open. You can bring your

  943. family. You can pray together. Pastor

  944. Eric and myself will be available to

  945. pray with you. If you have a need, you

  946. have an appointment coming up, you'd

  947. like to pray on behalf of someone, you'd

  948. like to celebrate a victory, [music]

  949. or maybe you prayed that prayer that

  950. Paul wrote uh and wrote in Romans 10:9,

    Romans 10:9

  951. and today you are confessing with your

  952. mouth that Jesus is Lord, and you're

  953. believing that he rose from the dead,

  954. and you're experiencing salvation. We'd

  955. love to celebrate that with you. Come

  956. and tell Pastor Eric or myself. I love

  957. you, church.

  958. >> [snorts]
