  1. I I saw a connection that I wanted to

  2. use. 1 Corinthians chapter 11. If you

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  3. turn there,

  4. the city of Corinth is a rough place. It

  5. was a military town. It was a sailor

  6. town and all that went with that. uh and

  7. Paul started a wonderful church there

  8. and he's writing to these Corinthians.

  9. This is a very early letter. This letter

  10. is actually earlier in writing as you've

  11. heard from me than the four gospels.

  12. Four gospels were actually put to paper

  13. after this. Very interesting. You don't

  14. normally think about that. So this is a

  15. very early letter and it teach it was

  16. later in history. Of course, this was in

  17. the 50s here, but uh uh the the gospel

  18. events took place uh 20 years or so

  19. earlier, but the gospel accounts were

  20. written after this. But anyway, in Luke

  21. in 1 Corinthians 11,

  22. Paul's writing the church. He spent 18

  23. months there in that city. Remember, God

  24. said, "Don't be afraid. I got many

  25. people in this city." And he did. and a

  26. wonderful church began.

  27. And in 1 Corinthians 11, Paul finds out

  28. there's a problem. He's he's he's

  29. dealing with problems. That's part of

  30. life. It's part of ministry. It's part

  31. of being a parent. It's part of being a

  32. husband. It's part of being a wife. It's

  33. part of being uh and whatever you do, a

  34. teacher, whatever you're doing, you're

  35. going to deal with problems, right? Uh

  36. and so there was a problem in the

  37. church. There was actually some

  38. disorderly conduct

  39. in the communion service. So there is a

  40. way to conduct ourselves in the Lord's

  41. supper and they were not doing it

  42. properly.

  43. Uh there was a lot of disrespect going

  44. on for each other. Uh and we'll explain

  45. that today.

  46. But in 1 Corinthians 11, Paul writes

  47. starts dealing with this problem. And I

  48. remind you, and I'm going to be talking

  49. about this, in the early church, for the

  50. first couple hundred years, they had a

  51. love feast and then they had the Lord's

  52. supper right afterwards.

  53. So, a lot of the problems were happening

  54. in the love feast.

  55. They weren't being very loving.

  56. They were doing just the exa opposite.

  57. And so, the love feast came first and

  58. we'll we'll see that. And then they were

  59. going to the communion with the problems

  60. they were causing in the love feast

  61. unresolved.

  62. So part of the Lord's supper is to

  63. confess those sins, repent of those sins

  64. that have built up that we haven't yet

  65. repented of and uh believed or and dealt

  66. with before the Lord. And but anyway,

  67. they weren't doing that. They were

  68. rushing right into the Lord's supper.

  69. So 1 Corinthians 11 is the standard

  70. passage to deal with the Lord's supper

  71. from the Apostle Paul. And we're going

  72. to begin in verse 17.

  73. Now in this I declare unto you, I praise

  74. you not that you come together not for

  75. the better but for the worse. Now that's

  76. horrible. When we come to church, we

  77. want to be better. We want to be the

  78. better for it rather than worse. We

  79. don't want to come to church and sin and

  80. be worse for it than we're better. Our

  81. whole point is to walk out of here this

  82. morning. Better, not worse.

  83. So they took all the trouble to get

  84. together, but they were worse when they

  85. left than when they came. And he says in

  86. verse 18, "For first of all, when you

  87. come together in church, I hear there

  88. are divisions among you, and I partly

  89. believe it." The word divisions is the

  90. word we we have for schism.

  91. A schism is an unjustified separation.

  92. The Bible teaches separation.

  93. There's a separation Christians should

  94. be practicing.

  95. But this is an unjustified separation,

  96. an unjustified division.

  97. So he says,"I hear there are heresies

  98. among you or schisms among you uh or

  99. divisions among you and I partly believe

  100. it. For there must be heresies among you

  101. that they who are approved may be made

  102. manifest among you. When you come

  103. together therefore in one place this is

  104. not to eat the Lord's supper.

  105. For in eating everyone takes before the

  106. other his own supper, and one's hungry

  107. and another's drunk." How about that for

  108. conduct in church?

  109. Somebody's grabbing all the food. Other

  110. people are over drinking and get drunk.

  111. That's how you worship God. Not a good

  112. thing.

  113. What have you not houses to eat and

  114. drink in or despise you the church of

  115. God and shame those that have not?

  116. In other words, the wealthy people were

  117. bringing a lot of food and eating it all

  118. themselves in front of the poor people

  119. that didn't have enough. The wealthy

  120. weren't sharing.

  121. What shall I say to you? Shall I praise

  122. you in this? I praise you not.

  123. Now, the problem here is the problem was

  124. arising in the love field. It wasn't

  125. very loving and then the problem was not

  126. resolved when they started to take

  127. communion after the love piece. They

  128. went right into it. So the point of this

  129. section is when we we when we've blown

  130. it when we've sinned the sin of omission

  131. or commission and we all have them we

  132. should be confessing them before we come

  133. to the Lord's supper. You say wait a

  134. minute I didn't confess this morning.

  135. Well you've got you got about another 45

  136. minutes.

  137. So whatever you haven't dealt with,

  138. dealt with. I shouldn't have said that.

  139. I shouldn't have done that. That's part

  140. of Christian life.

  141. And if we confess our sins, he's

  142. faithful and just to forgive us our sins

  143. and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  144. And confession is a normal part of the

  145. Christian life.

  146. So anyway, but they weren't doing that.

  147. And so and then verse 23, we get into

  148. the Lord's supper itself. But for I

  149. received of the Lord which that which

  150. also I delivered to you that the Lord

  151. Jesus the same night in which he was

  152. betrayed took bread. Now this is now

  153. Paul's going back to the upper room and

  154. when Jesus instituted the Lord's supper

  155. right after the Passover meal

  156. took Passover bread and Passover wine

  157. and and did and changed the whole thing.

  158. They were reme the Jews were remembering

  159. coming out of Egypt and the redemption

  160. out of Egypt that Jesus took Passover

  161. bread, Passover wine and said, "Now

  162. you're going to start remembering me

  163. what I'm going to do."

  164. And when he given drink thanks, he broke

  165. it and said, "Take, eat. This is my body

  166. which is broken for you. This do in

  167. remembrance of me. You're going to have

  168. something greater to remember than two

  169. million of you being rescued from

  170. Egyptian slavery."

  171. And after the same manner also he took

  172. the cup when he sucked, saying, "This

  173. cup is the new testament in my blood.

  174. This do as often as you drink it in

  175. remembrance of me." Did you see that

  176. twice? In remembrance of me. In

  177. remembrance of me.

  178. Or as often as you eat this bread and

  179. drink this cup, you do show the Lord's

  180. death till he come. And that word show

  181. is literally preach.

  182. So everybody here that takes the bread

  183. and takes the cup and we do it together.

  184. We do it silently, but we do it together

  185. is preaching

  186. by eating the bread and by drinking the

  187. cup. You're we're saying to everybody

  188. else, my only hope in this life or the

  189. next is that Jesus died for me and rose

  190. again. He shed his blood. He suffered in

  191. his body and I'm remembering him. It's

  192. an act of worship.

  193. And so he says in verse 27, "Wherefore

  194. whosoever shall eat this bread and drink

  195. this cup of the Lord unworthily."

  196. Now that's an adverb, not an adjective.

  197. All of us are unworthy.

  198. Are you worthy of heaven?

  199. Are you worthy of being saved? I hope

  200. you say no.

  201. None of us are worthy. If this was an

  202. adjective, nobody could take communion.

  203. This is an adverb.

  204. It's describing how we do it. Okay?

  205. We're to do it in a worthy way. Honoring

  206. the Lord, remembering the Lord,

  207. rejoicing in the Lord.

  208. But they weren't doing it in a worthy

  209. way.

  210. And so, he's very clear in verse 27,

  211. "Whosoever shall eat this bread and

  212. drink this cup of the Lord unworthily

  213. shall be guilty of the body and blood of

  214. the Lord." God takes the remembrance of

  215. his son on the cross very seriously.

  216. It's not a time to to uh do to enter

  217. into lightly or irreverently.

  218. But let a man examine himself. Not

  219. examine everybody else.

  220. Examine himself.

  221. We're pretty good at examining other

  222. people.

  223. He said, "Examine yourself. Focus on

  224. yourself."

  225. You say, 'Yeah, but I know this

  226. Christian and they're here and I know

  227. what they said and I know what they did

  228. and examine yourself.

  229. Let God deal with them. Let them deal

  230. with God.

  231. And so uh it says

  232. uh very clearly in verse 28, let a man

  233. examine himself and so let him eat of

  234. that bread and drink of that cup. For he

  235. that eateth and drinkketh unworthily

  236. eateth and drinkkeeth judgment. King

  237. James says damnation means judgment.

  238. You're you're eating you're you're going

  239. to have some chastisement from the Lord.

  240. You're going to get a pretty good spank

  241. to himself not discerning the Lord's

  242. body. For this cause many are weak and

  243. sickly among you. In other words, God

  244. made them sick. He's God's got ways to

  245. deal with it. You know, your mom your

  246. mom and my mom or my dad sent us to our

  247. room or got the paddle out and you know,

  248. but God's got his ways. You know now not

  249. all sickness is because of a specific

  250. sin but God knows how to get our

  251. attention. For this cause many are weak

  252. and sickly among you and many sleep.

  253. Some people actually lost their physical

  254. lives because of their irreverence

  255. and their uh taking the Lord's supper in

  256. an irreverent way. That's pretty

  257. serious.

  258. They didn't go to hell. They went to

  259. heaven. They just went to heaven earlier

  260. than if they hadn't done it. It was a

  261. discipline. You understand what I'm

  262. saying? to discipline.

  263. If we would judge ourselves, we should

  264. not be judged. But when we're judged,

  265. we're chasened of the Lord that we

  266. should not be condemned with the world.

  267. So the whole point of the making you

  268. sick or breaking your health or even

  269. taking your life was that you God would

  270. get your attention enough to to repent

  271. of that.

  272. Wherefore, my brethren, when you come

  273. together to eat, tar for one another.

  274. Try for one another. And if any man

  275. hunger, let him eat at home. And you

  276. that you come not together to judgment,

  277. and the rest I'll all set in order when

  278. I come. So the whole point, this church

  279. was taking the trouble to gather

  280. together and meet together and did all

  281. the work that you had to do in those

  282. days to get together.

  283. that they were worse off than if they

  284. stayed home.

  285. So that's no good. So every time we come

  286. together, we want to come together for

  287. the better, right? Not for the worse.

  288. That's the point. And so we need to be

  289. God focused and Jesus focused and uh let

  290. the Lord do whatever he needs to do with

  291. us uh when we do. Now the text talks

  292. about examining yourself,

  293. right? Let a man examine himself.

  294. That's very important in this particular

  295. text of scripture. It's part of the

  296. Lord's supper is that self-examination.

  297. Not looking to who the other person is.

  298. Looking looking just it's verse 28. Let

  299. a man examine himself and so let him eat

  300. of that bread and drink of that cup. So

  301. they weren't examining themselves. If

  302. they were, they would have thought, I

  303. shouldn't have said that at the love

  304. feast. I shouldn't have done that at the

  305. love feast. I shouldn't have brought

  306. extra for other people. whatever they

  307. did.

  308. Now, that's part of our text. And now

  309. I'm putting another text with it that

  310. I've never put together. I I don't think

  311. I ever put these two texts together. Go

  312. with me to Matthew. Hold your place

  313. here. Mark this section because we'll

  314. come back to it.

  315. Matthew chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  316. This is in the sermon on the mount.

  317. Matthew chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  318. The sermon on the mount is contained in

  319. Matthew's gospel and it is chapter 5, 6,

    Isaiah 5 chapter mention

  320. and 7. There's three chapters that are

  321. recording one sermon,

  322. the sermon on the mount.

  323. And my purpose this morning is to is to

  324. deal with some verses right in chapter 7

  325. and especially

  326. verses three and four. But I'm going to

  327. read 1 2 3 and four.

  328. Judge not, Jesus said that you be not

  329. judged.

  330. Judge not that you be not judged.

  331. That's a favorite verse of unbelievers.

  332. Don't judge me.

  333. Don't make any judgments. That people

  334. misquote that verse all the time. Misuse

  335. that verse all the time. We all make

  336. judgments. But we sometimes we make

  337. unjust judgments. And that's what he's

  338. talking about. Judge not that you be not

  339. judged. For with what judgment you

  340. judge, you'll be judged. And with what

  341. manner you measure be measured to you

  342. again. And why beholdest thou the moat

  343. in thy that's in your brother's eye? But

  344. consider not the beam that's in your own

  345. eye.

  346. So your brother's got a stick in his eye

  347. and you got a log in yours

  348. and you're judging him.

  349. That's what's that's the picture.

  350. Or how will you say to your brother,

  351. "Let me pull the moat out of your eye,

  352. and behold, a beam is in your own eye."

  353. What's that mean? It's easier to see sin

  354. in somebody else than in yourself.

  355. We're pretty good at seeing sin in other

  356. people.

  357. We're pretty bad at seeing sin in

  358. ourselves,

  359. right? I mean, seriously, we're all that

  360. way.

  361. And he said, "Thou hypocrite,

  362. first cast the beam out of your own eye,

  363. and then you'll see clearly to cast the

  364. moat out of your brother's eye.

  365. Okay,

  366. that's as far as we're going to get. But

  367. he does also go in verse six, which has

  368. some bearing. Give not what is holy to

  369. the dogs, neither cast your pearls

  370. before swine, lest they trample them

  371. under feet and turn again and lacerate

  372. you. But I'm primarily interested in

  373. verses two to five. Okay, that's our

  374. purpose this morning. Let's get going

  375. with it and see how these things fit

  376. together. And my purpose is not to give

  377. a full explanation of the text here in

  378. the sermon on the mount. Uh that takes a

  379. long time. I've actually preached one

  380. verse at a time through the sermon on

  381. the mount. It takes several months. I'm

  382. telling you, a lot of verses to go

  383. through. And I love teaching it that

  384. way, but we're not doing that today. My

  385. purpose this morning is not to give a

  386. full exposition of our text of of this

  387. famous section, but it's it's to examine

  388. this and the Lord's supper thing

  389. together.

  390. And in the sermon on the mount here,

  391. Jesus is saying, don't just be looking

  392. at other people, look at yourself.

  393. Right? Very clear. Deal with yourself,

  394. not just others. And so, it's dealing

  395. with the importance of dealing with

  396. ourselves.

  397. It's also important to deal with others

  398. as well.

  399. And so there is that other part that

  400. we're to to remind oursel of. I can't

  401. misdeal with myself or misdeal with

  402. other people. And at the Lord's supper,

  403. we kind of need to look at both.

  404. Now, for those of you that are new to

  405. the Bible, if you're here today and

  406. you're fairly new to the Bible, the

  407. sermon on the mount is one of the

  408. greatest sermons ever preached. I think

  409. it is all kinds of aspects to it

  410. and what Jesus said what Jesus said here

  411. is marvelous

  412. and the Lord but here's I want you to

  413. just while we're here I'm going to give

  414. you a lesson on the sermon on the mount

  415. over chapter five where it starts

  416. Jesus had two kinds of people in front

  417. of him

  418. he had the crowds

  419. and he had his disciples

  420. He had people who were unsaved and he

  421. had people that were saved.

  422. But I want you to watch this. This will

  423. really be helpful to you. He says, "And

  424. seeing the multitudes, he," that's

  425. Jesus, "us went up into a mountain, and

  426. when he was seated, his disciples came

  427. to him." Now on the sermon of mount on

  428. the where the sermon on mount was given

  429. uh there's some flat areas right up

  430. there where hundreds of people could be

  431. Catholics have even built a church up

  432. close to where this is but it is high up

  433. it's in a mountain but there's plenty of

  434. places to for Jesus to sit plenty of p

  435. places for crowds to be in a flat area

  436. up there

  437. but

  438. Jesus is doing something very important

  439. The crowds are there and they're

  440. listening.

  441. But Jesus is preaching to his own. He's

  442. preaching to the disciples,

  443. his followers,

  444. those who were saved, but the unsaved

  445. are listening too.

  446. Okay? So the primary audience is saved

  447. people.

  448. The uh the other people are listening.

  449. So there's both saved and unsaved that

  450. heard what was said on the sermon on the

  451. mount.

  452. And that's very clear. Seeing the

  453. multitudes, those are the unsaved.

  454. Might have been some saved among them,

  455. but a lot of them weren't. He went to a

  456. mountain and when he was seated,

  457. his disciples came to him. You see the

  458. difference? There's the disciples and

  459. there's the crowd.

  460. and he opened his mouth and taught them.

  461. Now the nearest anticedant for them is

  462. his disciples.

  463. So Jesus is teaching his disciples

  464. but the crowds are listening in

  465. and no doubt the crowds benefit from

  466. this and Jesus knew they were

  467. benefiting.

  468. my roommate in seminary who's now with

  469. the Lord. He later became a college

  470. professor in California, had a doctor in

  471. Christian counseling. He was unsaved. He

  472. was in a bar

  473. and he listened to what someone else was

  474. saying, witnessing to somebody else. He

  475. wasn't witnessing to Tim. He was

  476. witnessing to this other person.

  477. and he was overhearing what this fellow

  478. was saying to somebody else in a booth

  479. not too far from him and he was an

  480. evolutionist. He was his O major at OU.

  481. He had no use for God and he heard the

  482. gospel and he had Christian parents that

  483. prayed for him but he mocked them for

  484. their belief in God.

  485. Him heard what this fellow was saying to

  486. another person. He overheard is the way

  487. I don't even think that other person

  488. even knew he was in the room.

  489. He went home and got saved.

  490. And so Jesus is talking to the

  491. disciples. He's they they're he's

  492. addressing them. But both they and Jesus

  493. know other people are listening to them.

  494. But what he's saying is applied

  495. primarily to them, but the unsaved are

  496. hearing it, too. So there's both saved

  497. and unsaved. And that's that's good.

  498. That's the way it ought to be. Bible

  499. classes, church, there's saved and

  500. unsaved people in it and you uh that's

  501. what you do. So when Jesus says you're

  502. the salt of the earth, he's talking to

  503. the disciples, right? He's not talking

  504. to the crowds. When he says you're the

  505. light of the world, he's talking to the

  506. disciples. He's not talking to the

  507. crowds.

  508. And so

  509. that's what he's doing. So Jesus is

  510. expounding God's law. He's dealing with

  511. murder, adultery, divorce, oaths,

  512. turning the other cheek, loving your

  513. enemy, giving to the needy. He's doing

  514. all kinds of stuff,

  515. knowing that there's a circle of

  516. believers there and followers that are

  517. saved and are going to be leaders in the

  518. ministry, but knowing the others are

  519. listening.

  520. So, never you never know how God's going

  521. to work with a sermon, right?

  522. You never know.

  523. And so the application at the end,

  524. building on the rock and building on the

  525. sand, that's where Jesus is doing

  526. evangelism.

  527. Build on the sand, your house is going

  528. to fall. Build on the rock, it's going

  529. to stand when the troubles come. So he

  530. he gives the invitation so to speak at

  531. the end, the application at the end of

  532. the wise and foolish elders.

  533. So this is the picture

  534. and uh in in the sermon on the mount

  535. he's he's primarily dealing with

  536. edification and exhortation to the

  537. saved. That's his 12 apostles but the

  538. others are listening as well. That's it.

  539. Now so what's he talking about here that

  540. irrelevant to us? He's talking to save

  541. people

  542. that have a beam in their eye

  543. and they're they think that they

  544. have a right to criticize somebody else,

  545. some other believer with a speck in

  546. their own eye.

  547. He's talking to save people about that.

  548. He's saying, "Get the log out of your

  549. eye. And then you'll see clearly to get

  550. the the smoke the the speck out of your

  551. the stick out of your

  552. friend's eye. Interesting thing.

  553. Now all this has connection. What how's

  554. this connect with first Corinthians?

  555. How's this connect with first

  556. Corinthians? Uh first Corinthians had a

  557. love feast and they misused it.

  558. So in here uh there is a connection. you

  559. are not properly connecting with each

  560. other

  561. and you're going to be chasing for it.

  562. God cares how church people treat other

  563. church people. God cares how Christians

  564. treat other Christians. We're pretty

  565. good at stepping on each other's feet.

  566. We're pretty good at hurting each other.

  567. Anyone that's been in the ministry knows

  568. that that happens. And we're pretty

  569. awkward. We're like we we we we don't

  570. always mean to do it, but we do it.

  571. So there has to be a horizontal

  572. dimension where we realize I got to be

  573. careful how I treat other brothers and

  574. sisters in Christ.

  575. I I I see something bad in their life

  576. and I'm going to rip and stem to stern

  577. and I'm missing but I got something

  578. worse in my life. How's that going to

  579. help them?

  580. That's not going to be helpful.

  581. So there's a horizontal thing that Jesus

  582. is working on here. And but in and

  583. there's also a vertical thing. Our

  584. relationship with God. If our

  585. relationship with each other is not

  586. right, our relationship with God's not

  587. going to be right.

  588. And so in the Lord's supper, when they

  589. go in there with the love feast and

  590. they're not treating each other right,

  591. they weren't being able to

  592. fellowship properly with the bread and

  593. with the Lord. Everybody following that?

  594. think that that's helpful.

  595. So in fact he said you come together in

  596. Corinthians not for the better but for

  597. the worse. That's that verse has always

  598. struck me. Why go to all the trouble to

  599. travel to church, sit down, spend time

  600. and you're worse off than when you came.

  601. We should always come together for the

  602. better. And not just for our better, but

  603. for everybody's better.

  604. You say, "I didn't get much out of the

  605. sermon today." Well, maybe somebody else

  606. did. It's not just all about you.

  607. Maybe God will hit you next time.

  608. We should come together for the better.

  609. Every service has a goal.

  610. A goal is upward to be right with God

  611. and to be pleasing him and giving him

  612. pleasure. But every service should

  613. always be how can I be a blessing to

  614. other people around me. Now, some days

  615. we're so busted up, we just want to

  616. sneak in the back and sneak out the back

  617. door. We're having a rough time. God

  618. understands that. Uh but uh there's

  619. something about being God's with God's

  620. people that can really be a blessing.

  621. Now, with those two things in mind, the

  622. vertical and the horizontal, I need to

  623. be right with the Lord. I need to be

  624. right with each other. If I'm not right

  625. with each other, I can't be right with

  626. the Lord. That's

  627. very, very important.

  628. So now let's go back to 1 Corinthians 11

  629. in our minds and think about the love

  630. feast that preceded the Lord's supper.

  631. You see, I've never heard of the love

  632. feast. I didn't even know there was such

  633. a thing in Christianity. I'm not

  634. surprised.

  635. If you know church history, you know

  636. that they stopped it

  637. because all the problems it was causing.

  638. It actually caused so many problems.

  639. Christians couldn't love each other

  640. properly. They just thought we're better

  641. off not doing this.

  642. It's a very interesting story.

  643. And it uh the the uh the Bible

  644. dictionary I had describes the love

  645. feast, a meal shared by early Christians

  646. when they met together for fellowship

  647. and the Lord's supper. Uh and it says

  648. because of such abuses those described

  649. in the New Testament 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 11:7–34

  650. 11:7-34

  651. and 2 Peter 2:13

    2 Peter 2:13

  652. and probably for reasons of convenience

  653. the meal and the eukarist became

  654. separated in uh in the second century.

  655. They just gave up on doing it. We can't

  656. do it right. We just won't do it. still

  657. remember the Lord's death, but you just

  658. have trouble with the love feast being

  659. loving. That's terrible.

  660. But the early church met, they met in

  661. the beginning when they had a fresh view

  662. of Jesus and a fresh view of his

  663. resurrection and a fresh view of

  664. themselves. Turn to Acts chapter 2 and

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  665. verse 46.

  666. This is the day of Pentecost. And

  667. afterwards, Acts 2 46.

  668. I'm going to go back to 44.

  669. All that believed were together and had

  670. all things common. Had all things

  671. common.

  672. And sold their possessions and goods and

  673. parted them among all men as every man

  674. had dee. a lot of persecution going on.

  675. So the wealthy people would help out the

  676. people that were not so wealthy and

  677. needed help. And and it says they sold

  678. their possessions and goods and parted

  679. them to all men even as he had need. And

  680. they continued daily in one accord in

  681. the temple, breaking bread from house to

  682. house. Did eat their food with gladness

  683. and singleness of heart, praising God,

  684. and having favor with all the people.

  685. And the Lord added to the church daily

  686. such as should be saved. So they they

  687. Jerusalem was a city of about 50,000 in

  688. the first century and it grew when they

  689. had a holy day but that was the regular

  690. population. So they would meet with each

  691. other and they would eat with each other

  692. and they the love feast was a regular

  693. thing.

  694. But then problems started coming in just

  695. like Paul's talking about in 1

  696. Corinthians 11.

  697. People got to where they were just not

  698. sharing their food.

  699. and eating they were they were eating

  700. steak and the other guys got a hamburger

  701. you know and so it wasn't too good right

  702. so they they weren't sharing they

  703. weren't uh uh being aware of others need

  704. the early in in the early church in

  705. Jerusalem there's a lot of persecution

  706. people lost their jobs they lost their

  707. family

  708. you become a Christian

  709. goodbye

  710. and so there there was a lot of needs

  711. And so this dictionary article says

  712. because of such abuses, those described

  713. in the New Testament and probably for

  714. reasons of convenience, the meal and the

  715. Eucharist became separated in uh around

  716. the second century.

  717. That doesn't mean that some people still

  718. didn't do it, but a lot of people just

  719. basically stopped. And uh and now by the

  720. way um

  721. there's other signs that some people

  722. kept it up. The dash is not an inspired

  723. scripture was written in 100 AD but they

  724. were still there were still people

  725. celebrating the love feast then. And u

  726. you see the same thing in Ignatius in

  727. 110 AD and Justin Martyr 150 and

  728. Tertullian in 200 there were still

  729. people celebrating the Lord's supper. If

  730. you read the early church fathers,

  731. Justin Martyr and others.

  732. So

  733. what does it mean in first Corinthians

  734. to not come to the Lord's supper and

  735. what was the problems? Carelessness,

  736. thoughtlessness, frivolous, selfishness,

  737. everything but love.

  738. Everything but love. Remember early in

  739. Corinthians one said I'm a Paul, one of

  740. Apollos, one of Cphus. There was

  741. divisions

  742. following men rather than following the

  743. Bible.

  744. I hope everybody here reads the Bible

  745. more than any other book.

  746. I have thousands of book in my library.

  747. I'm a book guy and I try to read from

  748. people in different denominations and

  749. stuff their comments on this book and

  750. that this subject and that. I believe in

  751. being edified by the whole church. But

  752. if you love any book more than you love

  753. that Bible, you love that other book too

  754. much. This is God's word and you need to

  755. read this. You need to be focused here

  756. more than anything else.

  757. And so may God help us. This church had

  758. its problems. It was a pretty big

  759. problem. God didn't appreciate it. So

  760. what happened was they had the love

  761. feast and then just jumped right into

  762. the Lord's supper and they they weren't

  763. confessing any sins they did in the love

  764. feast.

  765. So part of the Lord's supper is Lord, I

  766. shouldn't have said that. I shouldn't

  767. have done that. That's part of it.

  768. This doesn't mean you have to say it out

  769. loud to us. You just have to say it

  770. quietly to God. But that's an important

  771. thing.

  772. Now, that's where this section uh if you

  773. want to get the beam out of your get the

  774. beam out of your eye so you can get the

  775. mode out of your brother's eye. Don't be

  776. focused on others.

  777. Focus on yourself. If you really hate

  778. sin, you hate it in yourself, not just

  779. in other people. Right?

  780. If you hate sin in other people, but you

  781. don't hate it in yourself, you don't

  782. really hate sin.

  783. That's not a good deal.

  784. JC Riyle is one of my favorite writers

  785. in the Bible. He's an Anglican bishop of

  786. Liverpool. My favorite thing of

  787. Liverpool was not the Beatles. It's JC

  788. Roy.

  789. He was there a long time before the

  790. Beatles.

  791. He has a book called The Practic

  792. Practical Religion.

  793. He wrote it in 1878.

  794. I got it in my library 100 years 101

  795. years later

  796. in 1978

  797. or 79.

  798. And in that he has a chapter going to

  799. table

  800. talking about how do you take the Lord's

  801. supper

  802. and he focuses on all these things

  803. and he says the very ordinances was

  804. which was meant for peace and profit

  805. became a cause of discord and sin.

  806. He said when scripture speaks plainly

  807. why cannot men be content with it. Why

  808. should we mystify and confuse a subject

  809. which in the New Testament is so simple?

  810. You know what's happened with the Lord's

  811. table? Churches argue over it. What does

  812. it mean? This is my body and my blood.

  813. And the Catholics and the Lutherans and

  814. the Reformed, they all argue. They got

  815. their own thing. I'm not saying we

  816. shouldn't study that or have our own

  817. view. I'm just saying, is that all you

  818. can do with the Lord supper is argue

  819. about it?

  820. So, God help us. Right? And that's what

  821. he was an Anglican. That's what he's

  822. talking about. And so he has four things

  823. that he's talking about in this article.

  824. Why was the Lord's supper ordained? Two,

  825. who ought to go to table and be

  826. communicates?

  827. Those two. Why was the Lord's supper

  828. ordained? It was to remember the death

  829. of Jesus, right? That's the whole point.

  830. Focus on Jesus. Focus on who he is.

  831. Focus on what he did. That's why as

  832. often as you drink, eat this bread and

  833. drink this cup, you do proclaim, that's

  834. the word. You preach a non-verbal

  835. sermon, the Lord's death till he comes.

  836. That's what it's all about.

  837. And so very that's the place of the

  838. Lord's supper, but we it is his supper,

  839. but it's a supper we are to take with

  840. other people. So this other's this other

  841. side

  842. and we admitting we're a sinner when we

  843. take the Lord's supper, right? I need

  844. the body and blood of Jesus. We're

  845. confessing that non we're confessing

  846. that.

  847. Now, if we're not a Christian yet, we

  848. shouldn't take the Lord's supper because

  849. we haven't put our faith in Christ. You

  850. just kind of sit there quiet and just

  851. let the bread and cup go by. I did that

  852. in my early life. I wasn't saved. I knew

  853. it wasn't saved. I didn't I just let let

  854. it go by. Let it and so did other

  855. people. That's the proper thing for a

  856. non-Christian in in in a service.

  857. Nobody's going to examine you. The Bible

  858. says, "Let a man examine himself and and

  859. then let him eat of that bread and drink

  860. of that cup."

  861. So that's all kinds of important

  862. and but JC Ralph said it's nonsense to

  863. profess we desire to remember Christ's

  864. death while we cling to the oursed thing

  865. which made it needful.

  866. That's a second thing. If I'm

  867. if I've got if I've got sin in my life

  868. I'm just no not even interested in

  869. fighting it or giving it up.

  870. I'm not ready to take the Lord's supper.

  871. Right.

  872. I mean, we all got sin. We all got sin

  873. we don't even know about.

  874. We all do. And we all hide our own sins

  875. from ourselves.

  876. But the point of the Lord's supper is,

  877. Lord, I shouldn't have done this. I'm a

  878. Christian. I need your grace to not do

  879. this again. And I thank you for the

  880. blood of Jesus. But if we're not a

  881. Christian, just let it pass by. That's

  882. much better than taking it at that time.

  883. The best thing is to get saved and then

  884. take it. You can do that right where you

  885. are. And I was reminded as a young

  886. person in church, every time I let the

  887. Lord's supper bread and I I I'm not

  888. saying spoke to me, preach louder than a

  889. preacher sermon.

  890. So, but the other thing is we need to

  891. have the vertical of my relationship

  892. with the Lord, me and the Lord, and not

  893. just the horizontal.

  894. We have to have both. Am I am I am I uh

  895. did I treat somebody or did I mistreat

  896. somebody? I confess to them and confess

  897. to the Lord.

  898. So we must if a man doesn't want to do

  899. that, he's not ready. And then he comes

  900. with the last thing. Self-righteous

  901. people who think they are to be saved by

  902. their own works have no business to come

  903. to the Lord's supper.

  904. If you don't need Jesus cross, why would

  905. you take the Lord's supper? The Lord's

  906. supper is saying, "I need the cross.

  907. Can't save myself."

  908. Strange as it may sound at first, these

  909. persons are the least qualified of all

  910. to receive the sacrament. The least

  911. qualified. They're more they're they're

  912. le they are they are qualified less than

  913. the drunkard or the adulterer or anybody

  914. else or the thief

  915. because they think they're good. They

  916. think they're better than other people.

  917. And so that's what he says. They're the

  918. least qualified. Strange as it may sound

  919. at first, these persons are least

  920. qualified to receive the sacrament. They

  921. may be outwardly correct, moral, and

  922. respectable in their lives, but so long

  923. as they trust in their own goodness for

  924. salvation, they're entirely entirely in

  925. the wrong place at the Lord's Supper.

  926. For what do we declare at the Lord's

  927. Supper? We publicly profess

  928. that we have no goodness, righteousness,

  929. or worthiness of our own, and all our

  930. hope is in Christ. That's what we're

  931. doing when we take the bread and the

  932. cup.

  933. So,

  934. let's go back in our minds to Matthew 7.

  935. In Matthew 7, we're dealing with the

  936. what? The horizontal.

  937. I got to be careful how I'm treating

  938. other people and thinking about other

  939. people in relation to myself. In in uh

  940. 1 Corinthians 11, we're thinking of the

  941. horizontal and the vertical.

  942. If I don't treat people properly,

  943. then I'm not ready for the Lord's supp.

  944. It's very easy for us to be misfocused.

  945. We imagine ourselves often better than

  946. we are. And that can actually be a

  947. problem after you've gone to church for

  948. a while.

  949. When I was a kid in the 1950s, that's

  950. how old I am. Talking about the 1950s,

  951. World War II was just over. My dad was a

  952. veteran.

  953. And we kids, the the little boys, not

  954. the girls, they didn't care about it,

  955. but we always wanted to play war.

  956. And so the kids in the neighborhood,

  957. they all played at our house. My mom

  958. said, "I'd rather grow grass than kids.

  959. I'd rather go kid than grass." Excuse

  960. me, I misquer. So the neighborhood

  961. played in our yard

  962. and she always knew what we were doing.

  963. And most of the time it went pretty

  964. good. But we would divide up and some

  965. guys got to be the Americans and others

  966. got to be the Germans or the Japanese.

  967. That's that was the way we did it in the

  968. 50s. I'm not saying that was right. I'm

  969. just saying nobody wanted to be the

  970. Germans or the Japanese. They all wanted

  971. to be the Americans.

  972. Why? They all wanted to be the good

  973. guys. They all wanted to be the guys

  974. that won. Nobody wanted to be the the

  975. guys that lost.

  976. We had that view.

  977. And the Russians were the bad guys as a

  978. little later. And I actually had a

  979. perverted view of Russian people because

  980. of the Russian government till I went to

  981. Russia and met a couple of Russian

  982. people that were really really good

  983. people and nice people and that blew

  984. that that blew that away.

  985. But anyway,

  986. we all want to think we're on the right

  987. side,

  988. but the fact is sins put us on the wrong

  989. side. We were born on the wrong side.

  990. We were born fallen

  991. according to Romans chapter 5. And the

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  992. Bible says, "All have sinned and are

  993. coming short of the glory of God." All.

  994. No exceptions. There's no good guys.

  995. We're just all We've all failed. We've

  996. all blown it. That's the whole book of

  997. Romans. It's not just the atheists or

  998. the Muslims or the communists or the

  999. liberal churches or they're bad and

1000. we're good. No, we're all have sinned.

1001. And the are coming short. Present tense.

1002. That means we still come short even

  1003. after we're saved.

1004. None of us match up to what we should

  1005. be.

1006. And uh we just have to accept that.

1007. We're all broken. We're all broken in

1008. different ways, but we're all broken.

1009. God doesn't have any unbroken people.

1010. His toolbox just has a bunch of broken

  1011. tools.

1012. And that's what we are. So don't be

1013. surprised if Pastor Hixon messes up or

1014. you mess up. We're just all broken.

1015. So what are we to do? Examine ourselves

1016. and then eat. That's what it says in

  1017. Corinthians.

  1018. We're not examining others. We're

1019. examining ourselves and we exalt the

  1020. Lord, not ourselves.

1021. We're not trying to call other people

1022. out when it comes to their sins at the

  1023. Lord's supper. We're to call ourselves

  1024. out.

1025. James says the word of God's a mirror.

1026. You ever thank God for mirrors?

1027. You know, you would never know what your

1028. ears look like if it wasn't for a

  1029. mirror.

1030. You can't see your ears.

1031. You can't see your teeth.

1032. I can barely see my nose. I got a pretty

1033. big nose. But there lot there's things

1034. about you you can't see without a

1035. mirror. So, thank God for mirrors.

1036. Mirror shows you can't see your eyes

  1037. without a mirror.

1038. So you can only know yourself from a

  1039. mirror if it's a good mirror.

1040. And the word of God is that mirror that

1041. shows us to ourselves things about

1042. ourselves that we need to know. And one

1043. of them is I'm broken.

  1044. Broken.

1045. So we have to examine ourselves. It

1046. says, "And so let him eat of that bread

1047. and drink of that cup."

1048. Uh, I hope this has been helpful to you.

1049. Hope this has been challenging to you.

1050. It's challenging for me to preach on

  1051. this.

  1052. And uh,

1053. we don't want to be overoccupied with

1054. other people's sins. We want to be

  1055. occupied with our own.

1056. And neither do we want to be so occupied

1057. with our own we can't get occupied with

  1058. Jesus.

1059. The whole point is confess and then get

1060. to Jesus and enjoy him.

1061. And so God help us to do that.

1062. Uh and when we fellowship with God's

1063. people, the one others ought to be

1064. engaged. And we are going to have

1065. fellowship today. By the way, we have a

1066. meal after the service and we we're

1067. going we pray uh we have a prayer

1068. meeting every second week. We eat and

1069. then we pray and uh but then some the

1070. other times in the week we meet eat and

1071. meet for everybody where we're don't ne

1072. necessarily have to pray. It's good for

1073. God's people to be together. We need to

1074. be together and uh it's a challenging

  1075. thing.

1076. Here's some questions as we come to the

  1077. Lord's supper.

1078. Have I loved my fellow Christians

  1079. biblically?

1080. Have I loved them the way God wants me

  1081. to love them?

1082. Do I see them and their problems, but I

1083. don't see myself in my problems?

1084. Part of being a church and being a

1085. collective group is we have to deal with

  1086. our own problems.

1087. It's part of it so other people don't

1088. have to live with it.

1089. And the other part is there is that

1090. horizontal but there's the vertical.

  1091. Am I totally enraptured

  1092. with Jesus Christ?

1093. I love celebrating him who he is and

  1094. what he's done.

1095. The greatest privilege of my life is to

  1096. celebrate him publicly

1097. and talk to others about him who he is

1098. and what he's done. Now, our practice

1099. here is to pass the bread, wait for one

1100. another, partake together. We all eat at

1101. the same time. Then we pass the cup, uh,

1102. partake together. And as we do, we're

  1103. looking at Jesus.

1104. But but before you ever get the bread or

1105. the cup, uh there's a sin to confess.

1106. This is the time to do it.

1107. You don't have to be at the Lord's

1108. supper to confess sins, but Lord, I

  1109. shouldn't have said that. I shouldn't

1110. have done that. That's part of what this

  1111. is all about.

1112. And uh so we will proceed with that.

1113. Father, we thank you for what we've

1114. looked at in your word. Forgive us,

1115. Father, when we've been harder on others

1116. than we are on ourselves.

1117. Help us, Father, to come humble

1118. how much we fail you every day, every

1119. week of our life, but humbled that the

1120. creator of the universe would love us

1121. and pay for our sins, take our hell on

  1122. himself.

1123. An infinite person paying an infinite

1124. penalty we could never pay.

1125. We thank you for visitors here this

1126. morning. They're welcome to join us if

1127. they know the Lord as their savior. It's

1128. his table, not our table.

1129. But they're also welcome to just let it

1130. pass. Anyone here that wants to do that,

1131. that's okay, too. We're not going to

1132. look at them or judge them or ask them

  1133. anything about it. We're just That's

1134. between them and the Lord. Sometimes we

1135. just haven't had sufficient time to

1136. confess things that maybe we said

  1137. something or did something

1138. But may this moment be used for that.

1139. And it's all between folks and the Lord.

1140. If there's anyone that's not yet saved,

1141. we pray they come to know the Lord even

  1142. today.

1143. They'd realize the God of heaven.

  1144. Took my hell

1145. could have his heaven. Took my sins so I

  1146. could have his holiness.

1147. Be with him forever. A new heaven and

  1148. new earth.

1149. Oh father speak to our hearts today in

  1150. Jesus precious name. Amen.

1151. Lord as we go from this place

  1152. loving you more

  1153. trusting you more.

1154. May the power of your love and the light

  1155. of your word shine

1156. to a sin darkened world as we go from

  1157. this place.
