  1. A few weeks ago, we considered one of those great existential questions.

  2. ! Why is there something rather than nothing?

  3. ! And of course, we discovered that the Bible's answer for that the eternal, triune, covenant creator God has made all that exist.

  4. And then He steps back in His perfection and He evaluates what He's made by the power of His word.

  5. And He declares that every piece of it is very good.

  6. And through that, in these first two chapters of the Bible, we've contemplated the wonder of the created world.

  7. We have discovered the glory of humanity made in God's image as His special creation.

  8. We have looked at the beauty of human life and marriage in God's garden.

  9. Genesis 1 and 2 really is an incredible utopian picture of God's goodness and glory.

  10. And we read that and we're in wonder over it and then we immediately become discouraged about it.

  11. Because what we read in Genesis 1 and 2 is not matching up with our experience now.

  12. Our experience here, now, in this place is not the same as what we're reading was true at the beginning.

  13. Every human being can sense that things are not as they ought to be or even as they were meant to be.

  14. Which forces us to ask another of those great questions.

  15. After discovering the Bible's answer for why is there something rather than nothing, we must then ask, what happened?

  16. Where did it all go wrong?

  17. And that's what our text begins to answer for us today.

  18. Genesis 3, verses 1 to 7.

    Genesis 3:1–7

  19. Let's read it together.

  20. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

  21. He said to the woman,

  22. Did God actually say, you shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  23. And the woman said to the serpent,

  24. We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden.

  25. But God said, you shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden.

  26. Neither shall you touch it, lest you die.

  27. But the serpent said to the woman,

  28. You will not surely die.

  29. For God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened,

  30. and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

  31. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food,

  32. that it was a delight to the eyes,

  33. and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,

  34. she took of its fruit and ate.

  35. And she also gave some to her husband, who was with her,

  36. and he ate.

  37. Then the eyes of both were opened,

  38. and they knew that they were naked,

  39. and they sewed fig leaves together,

  40. and made themselves loincloths.

  41. Amen.

  42. Two statements bracket this section and give us the aim of the text.

  43. The first one is the last verse of chapter 2.

  44. If you just want to set your eyes on it again,

  45. we concluded our time of study last week with this phrase,

  46. The man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

  47. That's bracket number one.

  48. And then we immediately get into what we just read.

  49. We come to the end of it in verse 7.

  50. What is it that we read again?

  51. It's the closing in of that section, another bracket.

  52. What does it say?

  53. Well, the man and the woman, their eyes were opened,

  54. and they were aware now of their nakedness in such a way that they were ashamed.

  55. The text then is about humanity's descent.

  56. It's humanity's descent from purity and innocence into guilt and shame.

  57. It's the record of the original sin,

  58. a catastrophic moment in human history

  59. that affects each and every one of us still today.

  60. And it does so much for us.

  61. Of course, it doesn't do everything.

  62. We go on in the Scriptures to discover more and more about what this means,

  63. but it does so much for us.

  64. Remember, Genesis is a book of foundations.

  65. It's a book of origins.

  66. It's laying a foundation for us to understand something of our sin

  67. and what it is, how we're drawn into it,

  68. the pattern of human sin that is established here

  69. in the very beginning with the first man and woman.

  70. But then even here,

  71. we have a finger pointing forward

  72. to the uniqueness of Jesus Christ

  73. as our true and sufficient Lord and Savior.

  74. I just want to walk through the narrative with you

  75. and explain a few things that we find here

  76. and then see how we can get to anything good in this text

  77. or from this text.

  78. Notice first, we have a diabolical devil.

  79. We're going to have a lot of Ds today, right?

  80. A diabolical devil.

  81. Look at verse 1 again.

  82. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field

  83. that the Lord God had made.

  84. A new character is suddenly introduced into the narrative

  85. and this character will play a significant role

  86. in the original sin.

  87. It's a subtle serpent

  88. that enters into dialogue with the first woman, Eve,

  89. which is a rather bizarre twist to the story

  90. as we've been reading it.

  91. It's unexpected,

  92. not only that this creature would be there,

  93. but that it would have a voice

  94. and that it would enter into dialogue

  95. and some kind of reasoning and rationality.

  96. It's a bit bizarre.

  97. Before we jump into explanations

  98. of the purpose of this serpent

  99. and the identity of the serpent,

  100. let's just think first about the three descriptors

  101. that are given to us right here in the verse.

  102. What does the verse itself say about this creature?

  103. Well, first, we find that the serpent

  104. is part of the Lord God's very good creation.

  105. This is a created being.

  106. This is a created creature

  107. that after having been created,

  108. God steps back, the Lord God,

  109. and says, with this creature,

  110. everything is very good,

  111. meaning that the animal itself

  112. is not intrinsically evil.

  113. That's just not what we're finding here in this text.

  114. It's not a tale of some ongoing conflict

  115. between humans and snakes,

  116. though that conflict is great in the Blankenship house.

  117. That's not what this text is about.

  118. There's a second thing that we find here.

  119. It's a categorization for the serpent.

  120. It's categorized as a beast of the field.

  121. If you'll think back to chapter two in several places,

  122. even back to chapter one,

  123. when we see the creation of the land animals,

  124. God divides them into three different categories.

  125. We see this particular creature

  126. is categorized as a beast of the field,

  127. which may indicate

  128. that its presence in the garden sanctuary

  129. is atypical, perhaps,

  130. maybe suspicious.

  131. Moses, perhaps, is laying the groundwork here

  132. for the possibility that the serpent

  133. is an imposter and an intruder.

  134. And then we get to a third thing.

  135. Finally, we note that the serpent

  136. is noted especially for his shrewdness

  137. and his cunning.

  138. Certainly something that characterizes the animal

  139. and is used throughout the scriptures

  140. for both positive and negative explanations.

  141. Jesus in Matthew chapter 10

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  142. tells his disciples

  143. that as they go into the world on mission,

  144. that they are to be wise as serpents,

  145. crafty as serpents,

  146. shrewd as serpents,

  147. innocent as doves.

  148. It's positive.

  149. We go just a few chapters later

  150. in Matthew 23

  151. and we find that Jesus is confronting

  152. the Pharisees of his days

  153. and he calls them a brood of vipers

  154. with venom on their lips.

  155. They are destructive.

  156. They are using cunning then for evil.

  157. And what we find here in this text

  158. is that as an animal,

  159. the serpent's craftiness,

  160. its shrewdness and cunning

  161. is part of its God-given nature

  162. and is good.

  163. And yet Moses is also signaling

  164. how this creature will,

  165. with great cunning,

  166. attempt to deceive the woman in the garden.

  167. And we put all of that together.

  168. What becomes clear to us in this text

  169. is that it is not intending to convey

  170. that a mere animal

  171. is the source of temptation.

  172. That's not the takeaway from this text.

  173. An unnamed moral being is at work here.

  174. At this point,

  175. we don't know who this being is.

  176. We don't know where he has come from.

  177. We don't know what is motivating his actions.

  178. All we know is that he represents

  179. a clear and present deadly threat

  180. to life in the garden.

  181. And either he has taken possession

  182. of a real serpent,

  183. beast of the field,

  184. in order to use that beast for his purpose

  185. or else perhaps Moses

  186. is just stylistically presenting

  187. the tempter to us

  188. with the imagery of a cunning serpent.

  189. Either way,

  190. this is not about a snake.

  191. It is about a sinister adversary

  192. of God and of his people.

  193. And of course,

  194. as we read our Bibles,

  195. we find that this adversary

  196. goes by other names.

  197. We find him as Satan

  198. or the devil,

  199. that great adversary of God

  200. and of his people.

  201. All of these names

  202. kind of come together in one place

  203. in Revelation chapter 12

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  204. at the end of the Bible

  205. when it's showing Christ

  206. as victorious over evil.

  207. It says that the great dragon

  208. was thrown down.

  209. That ancient serpent

  210. who is called the devil

  211. and Satan,

  212. the deceiver

  213. of the whole world,

  214. he was thrown down to earth

  215. and his angels

  216. were thrown down

  217. with him.

  218. He is the tempter

  219. who seeks to destroy

  220. God's people

  221. through his rebellion.

  222. His tactics are cunning

  223. and they are effective.

  224. And one goal

  225. of this text,

  226. I think,

  227. is to demonstrate

  228. that the way

  229. he deceived Eve

  230. and influenced Adam

  231. is precisely

  232. how he works

  233. to devour

  234. you and me.

  235. It's all here.

  236. Jesus said

  237. he's the father

  238. of all lies,

  239. that he was a murderer

  240. from the very beginning.

  241. He seeks your death

  242. by enticing you

  243. to disbelieve God

  244. and to rebel

  245. against his word.

  246. Loved ones,

  247. if there's anything

  248. we need to take

  249. from verse number one

  250. and moving forward,

  251. it is this.

  252. It is that you have

  253. a real sinister

  254. and powerful enemy

  255. that is seeking

  256. to destroy you

  257. and you must be careful

  258. and vigilant,

  259. watchful of his tactics.

  260. And this passage

  261. helps us see

  262. what to watch for.

  263. 1 Peter 5,

  264. you probably know

  265. the verse well.

  266. Peter says,

  267. be sober-minded,

  268. be watchful.

  269. Your adversary,

  270. the devil,

  271. prowls around

  272. like a roaring lion

  273. seeking someone

  274. to devour.

  275. Resist him,

  276. Peter says.

  277. How, Peter?

  278. Firm in the faith.

  279. Both resisting

  280. the temptations

  281. that he presents

  282. in effectiveness

  283. here in this passage.

  284. Well, that's the

  285. diabolical devil,

  286. but then we immediately

  287. move into

  288. another portion

  289. of the text.

  290. We see a deceptive dialogue.

  291. Deceptive dialogue.

  292. Look again

  293. at the end of verse one.

  294. The serpent speaks

  295. and he says

  296. to the woman,

  297. did God actually say

  298. you shall not eat

  299. of any tree

  300. in the garden?

  301. And the woman

  302. said to the serpent,

  303. we may eat

  304. of the fruit

  305. of the trees

  306. in the garden,

  307. but God said

  308. you shall not eat

  309. of the fruit

  310. of the tree

  311. that is in the midst

  312. of the garden.

  313. Neither shall you

  314. touch it,

  315. lest you die.

  316. But the serpent

  317. said to the woman,

  318. you will not surely die.

  319. God knows

  320. that when you eat

  321. of it,

  322. your eyes will be opened.

  323. You'll be like God,

  324. knowing good and evil.

  325. This might be

  326. the most famous

  327. conversation

  328. in all the Bible.

  329. Serpent enters

  330. into dialogue

  331. with the woman

  332. and his goal

  333. is to deceive her

  334. into eating

  335. the fruit

  336. of the only tree

  337. in the garden

  338. that God

  339. has actually prohibited.

  340. Except he doesn't

  341. present it that way,

  342. does he?

  343. It's in this dialogue

  344. that we can discern

  345. a kind of definition

  346. for sin

  347. and of course

  348. the tactics

  349. that Satan uses

  350. to deceive us.

  351. And here it is.

  352. Sin is fundamentally

  353. an act of rebellion

  354. that results

  355. from distrusting God,

  356. disbelieving God,

  357. distorting God's word,

  358. and denying God's judgment.

  359. Three features there.

  360. Did you catch them?

  361. Distrusting God,

  362. distorting God's word,

  363. denying God's judgment.

  364. These are the three

  365. main elements

  366. of temptation

  367. that are presented

  368. to us here.

  369. Let's just walk

  370. through them.

  371. First we see

  372. the diminishment

  373. of God's benevolence.

  374. The diminishment

  375. of God's benevolence.

  376. Again,

  377. verse one,

  378. he said to the woman,

  379. did God actually say

  380. you shall not eat

  381. of any tree

  382. in the garden?

  383. And she responds,

  384. something of a lack

  385. of God's benevolence

  386. still yet.

  387. God said,

  388. you can eat

  389. of the trees

  390. of the garden.

  391. That's not exactly

  392. what he said.

  393. But she's a little bit

  394. closer than the serpent

  395. at least.

  396. You just can't eat

  397. of the fruit

  398. of the tree

  399. that's in the midst

  400. of the garden.

  401. sin.

  402. Sin is the inevitable

  403. result of believing

  404. that God is not good

  405. and generous.

  406. That he is restricting

  407. you from something

  408. that is beneficial

  409. for you,

  410. that will be satisfying

  411. for you

  412. and helpful

  413. to you.

  414. And in his cunning,

  415. the serpent

  416. intentionally misquotes

  417. God's command.

  418. He insinuates here

  419. a lack of benevolence

  420. on God's part

  421. and even when

  422. the woman

  423. corrects him,

  424. she somewhat

  425. softens the abundance

  426. of God's blessing

  427. that he had freely

  428. given them

  429. in the garden.

  430. The serpent

  431. insinuates

  432. that God

  433. had kept them

  434. from every tree.

  435. The woman

  436. implies

  437. that God

  438. had kept them

  439. from some

  440. of the trees.

  441. In reality,

  442. God had given

  443. them every tree.

  444. Every tree.

  445. Save one.

  446. Do you see

  447. the deception

  448. that's here?

  449. The cunning

  450. that's at play here.

  451. Notice what God

  452. actually said.

  453. Just look back

  454. at chapter 2

  455. and verse 16.

  456. And the Lord

  457. God commanded

  458. the man saying,

  459. you may surely

  460. eat of every tree.

  461. Surely,

  462. certainly,

  463. definitely,

  464. every.

  465. That's all of them.

  466. Save one.

  467. That's what God

  468. actually says.

  469. There's an infinite

  470. emphasis on

  471. God's benevolence

  472. and his kindness

  473. and his free gift

  474. of blessing

  475. that's overflowing

  476. in the garden

  477. for Adam

  478. and Eve

  479. and yet

  480. far from

  481. indicating

  482. anything of

  483. benevolence in God,

  484. the serpent comes

  485. in and actually

  486. questions,

  487. did God say

  488. you couldn't eat

  489. of any of the trees?

  490. And then she even

  491. softens it up somewhat

  492. and says,

  493. well,

  494. she doesn't say

  495. that he said

  496. we could surely

  497. eat of every tree.

  498. She says,

  499. well,

  500. we can eat

  501. of the trees.

  502. We shouldn't

  503. eat of one.

  504. Isn't this the tactic

  505. that Satan

  506. often uses

  507. with us?

  508. The serpent

  509. plants the seed

  510. of distrust

  511. by suggesting

  512. a stinginess

  513. in God's nature

  514. and so he does

  515. with us.

  516. Second,

  517. we see a distortion

  518. of God's word.

  519. We, of course,

  520. see it with the serpent

  521. in verse 2.

  522. Did God

  523. actually say

  524. cunning,

  525. crafty?

  526. Kent Hughes

  527. says the serpent

  528. here introduces

  529. the assumption

  530. that God's word

  531. is subject

  532. to our judgment.

  533. He questions

  534. what God says.

  535. Eventually,

  536. he's going to outright

  537. deny it.

  538. He hasn't done that yet,

  539. but he's questioning it.

  540. He's luring

  541. the woman

  542. into this idea

  543. and then we see

  544. in verse 3

  545. that she herself

  546. distorts a bit

  547. of what God

  548. had actually said.

  549. Look at what she says.

  550. Verse 3,

  551. God said,

  552. you shall not eat

  553. of the fruit

  554. of the tree

  555. that's in the midst

  556. of the garden

  557. and here's the distortion.

  558. Neither shall you touch it

  559. lest you die.

  560. She adds something,

  561. doesn't she?

  562. That's not what God said.

  563. Look back at chapter 2,

  564. again,

  565. verse 16.

  566. You may surely eat

  567. of every tree

  568. in the garden.

  569. That's benevolence,

  570. that's goodness,

  571. that's blessing,

  572. but of the tree

  573. of the knowledge

  574. of good and evil

  575. you shall not eat

  576. for in the day

  577. that you eat of it

  578. you shall surely die.

  579. There's no prohibition

  580. against touching here.

  581. She adds something here

  582. and her motivations

  583. for that

  584. are not immediately clear.

  585. It could be that

  586. she was just motivated

  587. by caution,

  588. just not wanting

  589. to get even close

  590. to what God

  591. had forbidden them

  592. and of course,

  593. we could sympathize

  594. with that.

  595. Those of you

  596. who are not

  597. avid endorsement

  598. like the Blinken ships

  599. maybe go on hikes

  600. from time to time

  601. and perhaps you take

  602. your kids on those hikes

  603. and there's maybe

  604. a cliffside

  605. and mom says,

  606. you know,

  607. if you go over the cliff

  608. you're going to get hurt

  609. so why don't we just

  610. stay about 10 feet

  611. back from it,

  612. right?

  613. The danger is over the cliff.

  614. You can really go

  615. probably another few feet over

  616. but with great caution

  617. we say,

  618. you know,

  619. let's not get

  620. any closer

  621. than what we already are

  622. unless something happens.

  623. Of course,

  624. if that's what Eve's

  625. got going on

  626. we can sympathize

  627. with that in some way,

  628. can't we?

  629. Of course,

  630. there's another explanation.

  631. Perhaps it wasn't caution

  632. that motivated her.

  633. Perhaps she's already

  634. begun to believe

  635. some of the deception

  636. of the serpent.

  637. It could be a blatant

  638. mischaracterization

  639. of God

  640. making his prohibition

  641. seem more extreme

  642. than what it actually is.

  643. We are certainly familiar

  644. with that too,

  645. aren't we?

  646. We have a rule

  647. we don't like

  648. or we get in trouble.

  649. We see this with our kids

  650. all the time

  651. and suddenly

  652. what actually happens

  653. gets embellished

  654. to make the person

  655. who has done the thing

  656. seem worse

  657. than what they actually are

  658. or more extreme

  659. than what they actually are.

  660. Perhaps there's

  661. something of that here

  662. in what the woman

  663. is doing.

  664. I don't know.

  665. Either way,

  666. she puts words

  667. in God's mouth

  668. that were not his.

  669. That's a problem.

  670. It's a problem

  671. to take away

  672. from God's word

  673. as the serpent does.

  674. that immediately leads us

  675. into liberalism

  676. which is going to result

  677. in sinfulness.

  678. It's just as much

  679. a problem

  680. to add

  681. to what God has said.

  682. That's going to lead us

  683. to legalism

  684. which is also

  685. going to take us

  686. into sinfulness.

  687. It's part of the temptation.

  688. But there's a third element here.

  689. It's the denial

  690. of God's judgment.

  691. Verse 4.

  692. Now the serpent

  693. puts all his cards

  694. on the table.

  695. He outright denies

  696. what God said.

  697. You will not surely die.

  698. You won't die.

  699. God just doesn't

  700. want you to be like him.

  701. If you eat it,

  702. your eyes will be opened

  703. in a way

  704. that you have never

  705. experienced before.

  706. You'll know good and evil

  707. in a way that only God

  708. can know it.

  709. And you won't need him anymore.

  710. That's the gist.

  711. It's a denial

  712. of God's judgment.

  713. It's the climactic moment

  714. of this dialogue.

  715. The serpent

  716. outright denying

  717. God's word

  718. as he has lured

  719. the woman

  720. into this conversation.

  721. He accuses God

  722. of withholding

  723. a superior good

  724. from her.

  725. But even she

  726. downplays

  727. the reality

  728. of God's judgment.

  729. Doesn't she?

  730. The end of verse 3.

  731. The gist

  732. of what she says here,

  733. you shall not touch

  734. the tree

  735. that's in the midst

  736. of the garden

  737. lest you die.

  738. The gist of that

  739. is perhaps

  740. we might die

  741. if we do.

  742. It's downplaying,

  743. isn't it?

  744. God had told Adam

  745. that if he ate

  746. of the tree,

  747. he would

  748. surely

  749. die.

  750. Chapter 2.

  751. Eve downplays

  752. that thread

  753. of judgment

  754. to say that

  755. perhaps

  756. they would die.

  757. and then Satan

  758. rightly quotes God

  759. but just says

  760. it's all a lie.

  761. And such is the lie

  762. that entices

  763. every one of us

  764. into our sin

  765. against God.

  766. Temptation says

  767. that God

  768. is a liar,

  769. that he selfishly

  770. wants to keep you

  771. from something

  772. good,

  773. that his judgment

  774. is an empty threat

  775. to control you.

  776. and in our

  777. sinfulness

  778. we downplay

  779. the reality

  780. of what sin is

  781. and how God

  782. intends to judge it.

  783. We think it's just

  784. not that big

  785. of a deal

  786. and we do so

  787. to our own demise.

  788. Elements of temptation

  789. are here.

  790. They're present

  791. in our own temptations.

  792. There's a third part

  793. to the narrative,

  794. isn't there?

  795. We've seen

  796. a diabolical devil

  797. and a deceitful dialogue.

  798. Now we get

  799. to deliberate

  800. disobedience.

  801. Disobedience.

  802. Emphasis being

  803. on the deliberation

  804. that is here

  805. in verse 6.

  806. Deliberate disobedience.

  807. So when the woman

  808. saw that the tree

  809. was good for food,

  810. that it was a delight

  811. to the eyes,

  812. and that the tree

  813. was to be desired

  814. to make one wise,

  815. she took of its fruit

  816. and ate.

  817. The trap

  818. was laid for her

  819. by the serpent,

  820. but now the serpent's gone.

  821. It's not going to show up again

  822. until God curses him.

  823. He's out of the picture now.

  824. It's just Eve

  825. at the tree.

  826. And I want you to sense

  827. how deliberate

  828. she is

  829. in this act.

  830. This was not

  831. an uncontrolled impulse.

  832. She took time

  833. to examine the fruit

  834. to consider

  835. its would-be benefits.

  836. A warning

  837. for those of us

  838. who allow our minds

  839. to deeply contemplate

  840. and fantasize

  841. about the pleasures

  842. of sin.

  843. Thinking,

  844. we'll never go that far.

  845. I just want to

  846. think about it.

  847. What would it be like

  848. or what could come

  849. from this?

  850. Notice what she does.

  851. First,

  852. she concludes

  853. that the fruit

  854. was safe.

  855. When she saw

  856. that it was

  857. good for food,

  858. it's safe,

  859. doesn't seem poisonous,

  860. it's not rotten.

  861. Looks like the fruit

  862. of all the other trees.

  863. Then she determined

  864. that the fruit

  865. would bring satisfaction

  866. and happiness

  867. and pleasure

  868. to her life.

  869. It was a delight

  870. to the eyes.

  871. And I want you

  872. to just think about

  873. those two

  874. before we move

  875. to the third.

  876. consider all the way

  877. back again

  878. in chapter 2

  879. and verse 9.

  880. Look at what it says.

  881. Out of the ground

  882. the Lord God

  883. made to spring up

  884. every tree.

  885. That is what?

  886. Pleasant

  887. to the sight

  888. and good for food.

  889. Now just think

  890. about that.

  891. Every single tree

  892. in the garden

  893. was satisfying

  894. and delightful

  895. and safe

  896. and good

  897. and blessed

  898. and she had access

  899. to all of them.

  900. What then is it

  901. that causes her

  902. to fixate

  903. on the one tree

  904. in all of God's creation

  905. that God said

  906. don't eat of it?

  907. Well her third

  908. evaluation

  909. is what gives us

  910. the answer.

  911. Finally she concludes

  912. that the fruit

  913. would provide

  914. knowledge and power

  915. reserved for God

  916. alone.

  917. It was

  918. desired

  919. to make

  920. one

  921. wise.

  922. The allure

  923. of the tree

  924. in her eyes

  925. was that she

  926. would have

  927. a God-like

  928. ability

  929. to possess

  930. wisdom

  931. apart from God.

  932. We talked about

  933. this a couple

  934. of weeks ago

  935. the significance

  936. of this tree

  937. and why God

  938. gives it

  939. the name

  940. that he gives it.

  941. It's not

  942. that in taking

  943. the fruit

  944. there was

  945. some inerrant

  946. power

  947. that was

  948. conferred

  949. onto the people

  950. that would

  951. actually make

  952. them like God.

  953. That's not it.

  954. It's representative

  955. of God's wisdom

  956. of moral autonomy.

  957. They were

  958. to hear

  959. from God

  960. and trust

  961. in his word

  962. to know

  963. what is good

  964. and what is

  965. evil.

  966. Eve sees the

  967. tree

  968. and the

  969. allure

  970. of the

  971. idea

  972. that I

  973. could

  974. possibly

  975. have

  976. this

  977. on my

  978. own.

  979. That's

  980. the

  981. allure

  982. of the

  983. tree.

  984. She

  985. carefully

  986. examines

  987. the fruit

  988. but she

  989. ignored

  990. everything

  991. God said.

  992. She just

  993. ignores it.

  994. sin

  995. always

  996. appears

  997. safe

  998. and

  999. satisfying

  1000. and it's

  1001. certainly

  1002. seductive

  1003. as long

  1004. as we're

  1005. ignoring

  1006. what God

  1007. says about

  1008. it.

  1009. As long

  1010. as we're

  1011. diminishing

  1012. the truth

  1013. of his

  1014. infinite

  1015. benevolence

  1016. to us.

  1017. But what's

  1018. missing from

  1019. the scene?

  1020. a preacher.

  1021. Eve

  1022. needed a

  1023. prophet

  1024. to correct

  1025. the errors

  1026. and to

  1027. proclaim

  1028. and emphasize

  1029. the truth

  1030. of what

  1031. God

  1032. actually

  1033. said

  1034. and who

  1035. God

  1036. actually

  1037. truly

  1038. was

  1039. in his

  1040. nature.

  1041. Eve

  1042. needed a

  1043. priest

  1044. to crush

  1045. the head

  1046. of the

  1047. serpent

  1048. and to

  1049. bring her

  1050. back to

  1051. God.

  1052. in his

  1053. garden.

  1054. She needed

  1055. a king

  1056. to step

  1057. forward

  1058. and to

  1059. rule over

  1060. the garden

  1061. in righteousness

  1062. leading her

  1063. in faithfulness.

  1064. She needed

  1065. Adam.

  1066. But where's

  1067. Adam?

  1068. As it turns

  1069. out

  1070. he was right

  1071. there

  1072. watching

  1073. listening

  1074. and eventually

  1075. eating

  1076. himself.

  1077. Commas are

  1078. important.

  1079. He wasn't

  1080. eating himself.

  1081. He was

  1082. eating

  1083. himself.

  1084. Verse 6

  1085. right at the

  1086. end.

  1087. Suddenly

  1088. Adam's back

  1089. sin.

  1090. And she

  1091. also gave

  1092. some to

  1093. her husband

  1094. who was

  1095. with her

  1096. and he

  1097. ate.

  1098. And this

  1099. is such

  1100. a tragedy

  1101. for us.

  1102. I don't

  1103. know if

  1104. we always

  1105. recognize

  1106. how much

  1107. a tragedy

  1108. that phrase

  1109. is.

  1110. She gave

  1111. to Adam

  1112. and he

  1113. ate.

  1114. Adam's

  1115. sin was

  1116. not like

  1117. Eve's.

  1118. It was

  1119. different.

  1120. The

  1121. mechanics

  1122. of it

  1123. were the

  1124. same.

  1125. He

  1126. took the

  1127. fruit that

  1128. he wasn't

  1129. supposed to

  1130. eat and

  1131. he took

  1132. a bite of

  1133. it.

  1134. All of

  1135. that is

  1136. the same.

  1137. But this

  1138. is more

  1139. than that.

  1140. What led

  1141. to this

  1142. act was

  1143. different

  1144. for Adam

  1145. than it

  1146. was for

  1147. Eve.

  1148. Eve was

  1149. deceived by

  1150. the serpent.

  1151. Adam was

  1152. not deceived

  1153. by the

  1154. serpent.

  1155. Paul

  1156. insists on

  1157. that in

  1158. 1 Timothy

  1159. 2.14.

  1160. Eve was

  1161. deceived.

  1162. Adam was

  1163. not deceived.

  1164. He knew

  1165. the truth

  1166. of what

  1167. God had

  1168. said because

  1169. it was

  1170. to Adam

  1171. specifically

  1172. that God

  1173. said it.

  1174. He was

  1175. well aware

  1176. of the

  1177. truth of

  1178. God's

  1179. benevolence

  1180. and what

  1181. God actually

  1182. said in

  1183. his command

  1184. and his

  1185. prohibition.

  1186. He wasn't

  1187. tricked into

  1188. eating.

  1189. Rather,

  1190. he sat

  1191. by passively

  1192. to see what

  1193. would happen.

  1194. He watched.

  1195. He watched.

  1196. And when

  1197. his wife

  1198. survived

  1199. the bite,

  1200. he listened

  1201. to her

  1202. in this

  1203. sense,

  1204. that it

  1205. didn't result

  1206. in what

  1207. God said

  1208. it would

  1209. result in.

  1210. And so

  1211. he takes

  1212. it.

  1213. After

  1214. much

  1215. deliberation

  1216. and no

  1217. deceit

  1218. and he

  1219. eats.

  1220. He takes

  1221. a bite

  1222. for himself

  1223. not because

  1224. he was

  1225. deceived but

  1226. because he

  1227. wanted for

  1228. himself all

  1229. that he

  1230. believed the

  1231. tree offered.

  1232. And we

  1233. have this

  1234. habit of

  1235. reducing

  1236. original sin

  1237. to merely

  1238. eating a

  1239. piece of

  1240. forbidden

  1241. fruit.

  1242. And no

  1243. wonder we

  1244. get so

  1245. confused

  1246. wondering why

  1247. God makes

  1248. such a big

  1249. deal about

  1250. this.

  1251. It's just

  1252. a piece

  1253. of fruit.

  1254. That's

  1255. not what

  1256. this is.

  1257. This is

  1258. so much

  1259. more than

  1260. that.

  1261. This was

  1262. an act

  1263. of defiance

  1264. against God

  1265. that sought

  1266. to achieve

  1267. life and

  1268. blessing and

  1269. wisdom apart

  1270. from the

  1271. good and

  1272. generous

  1273. creator.

  1274. By eating

  1275. the fruit

  1276. Adam

  1277. effectively

  1278. spat in

  1279. the face

  1280. of God

  1281. wanting to

  1282. be a God

  1283. unto himself.

  1284. This isn't

  1285. about fruit.

  1286. This is

  1287. about rebellion.

  1288. God

  1289. defiance

  1290. against God.

  1291. Sin

  1292. always

  1293. involves

  1294. deception

  1295. to some

  1296. extent

  1297. even if

  1298. it's

  1299. self

  1300. deception.

  1301. Adam's

  1302. sin

  1303. shows us

  1304. though

  1305. that it

  1306. doesn't

  1307. always

  1308. involve

  1309. a tempter.

  1310. In fact

  1311. James wrote

  1312. that sin

  1313. is the

  1314. child

  1315. of desire

  1316. that comes

  1317. from within

  1318. us not

  1319. just from

  1320. a tempter

  1321. that is

  1322. external

  1323. to us.

  1324. James

    James 1:14

  1325. chapter 1

  1326. verse 14

  1327. each person

  1328. is tempted

  1329. when he

  1330. is lured

  1331. and enticed

  1332. by his

  1333. own

  1334. desire

  1335. and desire

  1336. when it

  1337. has conceived

  1338. gives birth

  1339. to sin

  1340. and sin

  1341. when it

  1342. is fully

  1343. grown

  1344. brings

  1345. forth

  1346. death.

  1347. What does

  1348. that mean

  1349. for us?

  1350. It means

  1351. that no

  1352. one makes

  1353. us sin

  1354. and we

  1355. must stop

  1356. reducing

  1357. temptation

  1358. to a

  1359. kind of

  1360. victimization

  1361. that is

  1362. beyond our

  1363. control.

  1364. That's not

  1365. what it

  1366. is.

  1367. We sin

  1368. because we

  1369. want what

  1370. it offers.

  1371. We sin

  1372. because we

  1373. don't believe

  1374. God is

  1375. benevolent

  1376. enough to

  1377. satisfy the

  1378. deepest longing

  1379. of our

  1380. souls.

  1381. we sin

  1382. because we

  1383. don't know

  1384. and trust

  1385. his word

  1386. or believe

  1387. his threats

  1388. of judgment.

  1389. Every time

  1390. we sin

  1391. it's because

  1392. we want

  1393. what we

  1394. want

  1395. apart from

  1396. the good

  1397. and generous

  1398. creator.

  1399. The pattern

  1400. that we

  1401. experience

  1402. every day

  1403. of our

  1404. lives

  1405. is right

  1406. here at

  1407. the very

  1408. beginning

  1409. in the

  1410. original

  1411. sin.

  1412. It's

  1413. deliberate

  1414. disobedience

  1415. and then we

  1416. get to the

  1417. fourth part

  1418. of the

  1419. story

  1420. and we

  1421. find a

  1422. deadly

  1423. descent

  1424. descent.

  1425. Look at

  1426. verse 7.

  1427. Then the

  1428. eyes of

  1429. both were

  1430. opened

  1431. and they

  1432. knew that

  1433. they were

  1434. naked

  1435. and they

  1436. sewed fig

  1437. leaves

  1438. together

  1439. and made

  1440. themselves

  1441. loincloths.

  1442. So after

  1443. eating

  1444. Adam and

  1445. Eve's eyes

  1446. were indeed

  1447. opened.

  1448. That's what

  1449. the serpent

  1450. said would

  1451. happen.

  1452. It's not

  1453. that you

  1454. will surely

  1455. die.

  1456. It's that

  1457. your eyes

  1458. will be

  1459. opened.

  1460. God

  1461. knows

  1462. that.

  1463. He

  1464. doesn't

  1465. want

  1466. that.

  1467. And here

  1468. we find

  1469. their eyes

  1470. were

  1471. open.

  1472. Just not

  1473. in the

  1474. way that

  1475. they had

  1476. hoped.

  1477. It was

  1478. a half

  1479. truth.

  1480. They

  1481. didn't

  1482. immediately

  1483. die in

  1484. the sense

  1485. of being

  1486. extinguished.

  1487. But that's

  1488. only part

  1489. of the

  1490. story.

  1491. Suddenly

  1492. their

  1493. nakedness

  1494. was viewed

  1495. with guilt

  1496. and shame.

  1497. That's what's

  1498. happening here

  1499. with the

  1500. nakedness.

  1501. purity

  1502. to guilt.

  1503. It's

  1504. innocence

  1505. to shame.

  1506. They

  1507. felt dirty

  1508. and exposed

  1509. rather than

  1510. fulfilled

  1511. and enlightened.

  1512. Isn't that

  1513. what sin

  1514. always does?

  1515. It looks

  1516. so good

  1517. and delightful

  1518. and desirable

  1519. and when

  1520. it's finished

  1521. it doesn't

  1522. feel so good

  1523. anymore

  1524. does it?

  1525. everything

  1526. was different

  1527. now.

  1528. Their

  1529. innocence

  1530. was lost

  1531. now.

  1532. Death

  1533. had begun

  1534. to reign

  1535. in them

  1536. in a way

  1537. that they

  1538. had not

  1539. before

  1540. comprehended.

  1541. Ian

  1542. Dugget

  1543. says in

  1544. the Bible

  1545. death

  1546. is the

  1547. reversal

  1548. of life

  1549. not the

  1550. reversal

  1551. of existence.

  1552. Adam

  1553. and Eve's

  1554. experience

  1555. of life

  1556. in its

  1557. fullness

  1558. immediately

  1559. diminished

  1560. as their

  1561. sin exposed

  1562. them to

  1563. shame

  1564. and fear.

  1565. The

  1566. serpent

  1567. had claimed

  1568. that if

  1569. they disobeyed

  1570. God

  1571. they would

  1572. experience

  1573. freedom

  1574. power.

  1575. in

  1576. actuality

  1577. their

  1578. sin

  1579. brought

  1580. bondage

  1581. hopelessness

  1582. and

  1583. unsurprisingly

  1584. our

  1585. first

  1586. parents

  1587. immediately

  1588. try to

  1589. cover up

  1590. that guilt

  1591. because that's

  1592. what we

  1593. try to

  1594. do.

  1595. That's

  1596. the impulse

  1597. right?

  1598. I'm

  1599. dirty.

  1600. I want

  1601. to be

  1602. clean.

  1603. Something's

  1604. wrong.

  1605. I want

  1606. it to be

  1607. right

  1608. again.

  1609. they try

  1610. to cover

  1611. their shame

  1612. by sewing

  1613. together a

  1614. few fig

  1615. leaves for

  1616. clothing.

  1617. What is

  1618. this?

  1619. It's a

  1620. symbol of

  1621. our attempts

  1622. to mask

  1623. guilt which

  1624. are always

  1625. insufficient.

  1626. They never

  1627. actually get the

  1628. job done all

  1629. the way,

  1630. do they?

  1631. Self

  1632. justification

  1633. may for a

  1634. season ease

  1635. our consciences.

  1636. God sees

  1637. right through

  1638. all of that.

  1639. our only

  1640. hope,

  1641. Adam and

  1642. Eve's only

  1643. hope,

  1644. was that

  1645. with God's

  1646. justice,

  1647. there might

  1648. would be

  1649. found

  1650. something of

  1651. God's

  1652. mercy

  1653. that somehow

  1654. he will be

  1655. able to

  1656. truly and

  1657. sufficiently

  1658. cover their

  1659. guilt.

  1660. And that's

  1661. where it

  1662. ends.

  1663. It's

  1664. depressing.

  1665. Let's think

  1666. about it a

  1667. little further

  1668. though.

  1669. for Eve

  1670. to sin

  1671. is terrible.

  1672. But I'm

  1673. going to say

  1674. something I

  1675. think is

  1676. important to

  1677. our

  1678. understanding

  1679. of the

  1680. Bible and

  1681. our

  1682. understanding

  1683. of the

  1684. gospel.

  1685. Her sin

  1686. is terrible.

  1687. Adam's

  1688. sin is

  1689. catastrophic.

  1690. It's

  1691. catastrophic.

  1692. Adam was

  1693. our covenant

  1694. head.

  1695. his failure

  1696. to meet

  1697. God's

  1698. demand for

  1699. covenant

  1700. obedience,

  1701. a demand

  1702. given directly

  1703. to Adam

  1704. before Eve

  1705. was ever

  1706. created.

  1707. Significant

  1708. to him.

  1709. It plunged

  1710. the whole

  1711. human race

  1712. into sin.

  1713. We all

  1714. sin in

  1715. Adam and

  1716. we all

  1717. sin in the

  1718. same way

  1719. as Adam.

  1720. and just

  1721. as death

  1722. began to

  1723. reign in

  1724. him at

  1725. this moment

  1726. so does

  1727. death

  1728. reign in

  1729. each of

  1730. us.

  1731. How do we

  1732. know that?

  1733. The scriptures

  1734. tell us Paul

  1735. helps us so

  1736. much with

  1737. this in

  1738. Romans 5.

  1739. He says

  1740. just as sin

  1741. came into

  1742. the world

  1743. through one

  1744. man that

  1745. is Adam.

  1746. He doesn't

  1747. mention Eve.

  1748. He mentions

  1749. Adam.

  1750. Why?

  1751. Because

  1752. Adam's sin

  1753. is significant

  1754. here.

  1755. death

  1756. came through

  1757. that sin

  1758. and so

  1759. death

  1760. spreads

  1761. to all

  1762. men

  1763. because

  1764. we've

  1765. all

  1766. sinned.

  1767. Our

  1768. only hope

  1769. is that

  1770. God will

  1771. provide

  1772. a greater

  1773. Adam

  1774. who can

  1775. truly meet

  1776. the demands

  1777. of covenant

  1778. obedience

  1779. on our

  1780. behalf

  1781. because none

  1782. of us are

  1783. doing it.

  1784. We're

  1785. guilty.

  1786. He must

  1787. be a man

  1788. like Adam

  1789. but he

  1790. must be

  1791. more than

  1792. a man

  1793. because he

  1794. can't be

  1795. in Adam

  1796. in the same

  1797. way that

  1798. we are

  1799. in Adam

  1800. and that

  1801. leaves only

  1802. one being

  1803. to possibly

  1804. do this

  1805. work and

  1806. it's God

  1807. himself.

  1808. Only God

  1809. can meet

  1810. those demands

  1811. and save

  1812. us from

  1813. sin and

  1814. death.

  1815. And that's

  1816. exactly who

  1817. Jesus is.

  1818. He is

  1819. truly God

  1820. who's

  1821. perfect and

  1822. without sin

  1823. and yet

  1824. he's truly

  1825. a man

  1826. who lived

  1827. as a man

  1828. and suffered

  1829. as a man

  1830. and was

  1831. tempted as

  1832. a man yet

  1833. without

  1834. sin.

  1835. man.

  1836. Matthew

  1837. 4 and

  1838. Luke 4

  1839. both tell

  1840. us about

  1841. Jesus'

  1842. time or

  1843. at least

  1844. part of

  1845. his time

  1846. of temptation

  1847. with that

  1848. old serpent

  1849. the devil.

  1850. He tempts

  1851. Jesus for

  1852. 40 days

  1853. as he

  1854. fasted in

  1855. the wilderness

  1856. and three

  1857. of those

  1858. temptations

  1859. are recorded

  1860. for us

  1861. there.

  1862. each one

  1863. matches the

  1864. tactics that

  1865. we see

  1866. here in

  1867. Genesis 3.

  1868. Satan

  1869. distorts

  1870. God's

  1871. word.

  1872. He

  1873. misquotes

  1874. it

  1875. intentionally.

  1876. He

  1877. questions

  1878. God's

  1879. benevolence

  1880. and he

  1881. offers Jesus

  1882. a power

  1883. that belongs

  1884. only to

  1885. God.

  1886. All three

  1887. presented in

  1888. those temptations.

  1889. each time

  1890. Jesus did

  1891. what Adam

  1892. failed to

  1893. do.

  1894. He

  1895. rebukes

  1896. the serpent

  1897. he trusted

  1898. the will

  1899. of the

  1900. father

  1901. and he

  1902. confronted

  1903. each

  1904. temptation

  1905. with the

  1906. declaration

  1907. of the

  1908. truth of

  1909. God's

  1910. word from

  1911. Deuteronomy

  1912. 6 and

  1913. Deuteronomy

  1914. 8.

  1915. So that

  1916. in the

  1917. wilderness

  1918. temptations

  1919. and then

  1920. in his

  1921. life and

  1922. in his

  1923. ministry

  1924. ultimately

  1925. in the

  1926. garden of

  1927. Gethsemane

  1928. Jesus

  1929. overcame

  1930. temptation

  1931. he trusted

  1932. God

  1933. he perfectly

  1934. obeyed

  1935. and that's

  1936. why the

  1937. apostles argued

  1938. that Jesus

  1939. alone is

  1940. our true

  1941. prophet

  1942. priest

  1943. and king.

  1944. Hebrews 4

  1945. we do not

  1946. have a high

  1947. priest who

  1948. is unable

  1949. to sympathize

  1950. with our

  1951. weaknesses

  1952. but one

  1953. who in

  1954. every respect

  1955. has been

  1956. tempted as

  1957. we are

  1958. yet without

  1959. sin

  1960. and because

  1961. of him

  1962. because he's

  1963. our high

  1964. priest

  1965. let us

  1966. then with

  1967. confidence

  1968. draw near

  1969. to God's

  1970. throne of

  1971. grace

  1972. that we

  1973. may receive

  1974. mercy

  1975. and help

  1976. in time

  1977. of need

  1978. that's who

  1979. Jesus is

  1980. that's what

  1981. he provides

  1982. as a new

  1983. covenantal

  1984. head

  1985. Jesus

  1986. secures

  1987. for his

  1988. people

  1989. all that

  1990. Adam lost

  1991. in the

  1992. garden

  1993. he

  1994. perfectly

  1995. fulfilled

  1996. God's

  1997. covenantal

  1998. demands

  1999. and then

  2000. he took

  2001. our sins

  2002. on himself

  2003. on the

  2004. cross

  2005. thereby

  2006. completely

  2007. satisfying

  2008. God's

  2009. wrath

  2010. against

  2011. sinners

  2012. a perfect

  2013. and sufficient

  2014. propitiation

  2015. as we read

  2016. the terms

  2017. in the

  2018. New Testament

  2019. and how

  2020. do we know

  2021. it was

  2022. sufficient

  2023. because God

  2024. raised him

  2025. from the

  2026. dead

  2027. showing that

  2028. Christ's

  2029. death

  2030. was sufficient

  2031. to pay for

  2032. our

  2033. death

  2034. and to

  2035. forgive

  2036. our sins

  2037. and to offer

  2038. us life

  2039. and that's

  2040. the great

  2041. part of it

  2042. is that he

  2043. then does

  2044. indeed offer

  2045. us life

  2046. he invites

  2047. us

  2048. to receive

  2049. his life

  2050. in abundance

  2051. by faith

  2052. faith

  2053. in Christ

  2054. and here

  2055. we see

  2056. the great

  2057. reversal

  2058. of what

  2059. happened

  2060. in the

  2061. garden

  2062. Eve

  2063. and Adam

  2064. and the

  2065. serpent

  2066. diminish

  2067. God's

  2068. word

  2069. they question

  2070. his benevolence

  2071. they deny

  2072. his judgment

  2073. Christ

  2074. proves

  2075. the judgment

  2076. of God's

  2077. wrath

  2078. as he takes

  2079. it on

  2080. himself

  2081. he proves

  2082. the

  2083. truthfulness

  2084. of God's

  2085. word

  2086. as he's

  2087. raised

  2088. from the

  2089. dead

  2090. he proves

  2091. to us

  2092. the great

  2093. benevolence

  2094. of God

  2095. as he

  2096. gives

  2097. himself

  2098. for us

  2099. that is

  2100. not a

  2101. stingy

  2102. God

  2103. that is

  2104. the God

  2105. we all

  2106. need

  2107. and fortunately

  2108. it's the

  2109. God

  2110. we all

  2111. can have

  2112. by faith

  2113. says Paul

  2114. again in

  2115. Romans 5

  2116. for if

  2117. because of

  2118. one man's

  2119. trespass

  2120. that's

  2121. Adam

  2122. death

  2123. reigned

  2124. through

  2125. that one

  2126. man

  2127. much

  2128. more

  2129. will those

  2130. who receive

  2131. the abundance

  2132. of grace

  2133. and the

  2134. free gift

  2135. of righteousness

  2136. reign in

  2137. life

  2138. through the

  2139. one man

  2140. Jesus

  2141. Christ

  2142. therefore

  2143. as one

  2144. trespass

  2145. led to

  2146. condemnation

  2147. for all

  2148. men

  2149. so one

  2150. act of

  2151. righteousness

  2152. leads to

  2153. justification

  2154. and life

  2155. for all

  2156. men

  2157. for as

  2158. by one

  2159. man's

  2160. disobedience

  2161. many were

  2162. made

  2163. sinners

  2164. so by

  2165. the one

  2166. man's

  2167. obedience

  2168. the many

  2169. will be

  2170. made

  2171. righteous

  2172. the scene

  2173. in Genesis

  2174. 3 of

  2175. course

  2176. points us

  2177. to the

  2178. uniqueness

  2179. of Jesus

  2180. as our

  2181. Lord and

  2182. Savior

  2183. that's the

  2184. good news

  2185. of the

  2186. gospel

  2187. that we

  2188. get to

  2189. from

  2190. Genesis

  2191. 3

  2192. there's

  2193. practical

  2194. matters

  2195. here as

  2196. well

  2197. the text

  2198. shows us

  2199. this basic

  2200. pattern of

  2201. sin and

  2202. how we're

  2203. drawn into

  2204. it

  2205. it tells

  2206. us that

  2207. we need

  2208. to be

  2209. vigilant

  2210. and watchful

  2211. of a

  2212. real adversary

  2213. of his

  2214. tactics

  2215. and even

  2216. of

  2217. indwelling

  2218. sin

  2219. that doesn't

  2220. need a

  2221. tempter

  2222. finally we

  2223. need to

  2224. learn here

  2225. to

  2226. continually

  2227. cast

  2228. ourselves

  2229. on the

  2230. great

  2231. mercy

  2232. of God

  2233. not

  2234. trying to

  2235. self

  2236. justify

  2237. our own

  2238. version of

  2239. sowing fig

  2240. leaves

  2241. together

  2242. but by

  2243. trusting

  2244. entirely

  2245. in the

  2246. righteousness

  2247. of

  2248. Jesus

  2249. just

  2250. as

  2251. Adam's

  2252. sin

  2253. is

  2254. imputed

  2255. unto

  2256. all

  2257. men

  2258. so

  2259. is

  2260. Christ

  2261. perfect

  2262. righteousness

  2263. imputed

  2264. unto

  2265. those

  2266. who

  2267. will

  2268. believe

  2269. that's

  2270. good news

  2271. for us

  2272. friends

  2273. that if

  2274. you will

  2275. just

  2276. trust

  2277. him

  2278. you

  2279. will

  2280. be

  2281. forgiven

  2282. and

  2283. stand

  2284. before

  2285. God

  2286. righteous

  2287. whole

  2288. forgiven

  2289. and

  2290. those

  2291. of you

  2292. who are

  2293. Christians

  2294. need to

  2295. carry that

  2296. with you

  2297. every

  2298. day

  2299. because

  2300. chances

  2301. are

  2302. today

  2303. will be

  2304. another

  2305. day

  2306. of eating

  2307. of the

  2308. fruit

  2309. that you

  2310. shouldn't

  2311. eat

  2312. what's

  2313. our

  2314. hope

  2315. when

  2316. that

  2317. happens

  2318. that

  2319. Christ

  2320. is

  2321. our

  2322. righteousness

  2323. yet

  2324. not I

  2325. but

  2326. through

  2327. Christ

  2328. in

  2329. me

  2330. we

  2331. sing

  2332. isn't

  2333. that

  2334. what

  2335. it

  2336. is

  2337. and

  2338. so

  2339. every

  2340. day

  2341. we

  2342. confess

  2343. our

  2344. sins

  2345. to

  2346. the

  2347. Lord

  2348. as

  2349. is

  2350. necessary

  2351. trusting

  2352. that

  2353. he

  2354. is

  2355. benevolent

  2356. that

  2357. he's

  2358. merciful

  2359. and

  2360. that

  2361. it's

  2362. all

  2363. proven

  2364. in

  2365. the

  2366. Lord

  2367. Jesus

  2368. Christ

  2369. let's

  2370. pray

  2371. together

  2372. may

  2373. !
