  1. All right, we're going to read together from Paul's letter to the Colossians, and we're in chapter 2, verses 8 to 15.

  2. !

  3. And this is the word of the Lord.

  4. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the

  5. elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in Him, who is the head of all rule and authority.

  6. In Him also you are circumcised with a circumcision made without hands by putting off the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with Him in baptism,

  7. in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

  8. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,

  9. by canceling the record of death that stood against us with its legal demands.

  10. This He set aside, nailing it to the cross.

  11. He disarmed the rulers and authorities, and He put them to open shame by triumphing over them in Him.

  12. This is God's holy word.

  13. So we've been working for a few weeks now through the book of Colossians on Sunday evenings,

  14. and one of the themes that we've seen coming through in this book over and over again is the supremacy and the sufficiency, the complete sufficiency of Jesus Christ.

  15. Paul's writing to a church that are being tempted by teachings that are promising things not in line with the gospel.

  16. It's not necessarily that these people are teaching that Jesus should be abandoned or that Jesus is not worthy of praise.

  17. It seems to be more subtle teaching that these people are receiving.

  18. It feels as though the false teachers are teaching that you do need Jesus, but you need something else as well.

  19. Jesus on His own is not quite enough.

  20. You need Jesus and something else, some additional spiritual knowledge, some extra religious practices.

  21. If you really want to experience the fullness of what it means to have life with God.

  22. So maybe we read about these Colossian Christians and we shake our head and we go, guys, come on, don't think about it.

  23. But I think the truth is that this is the oldest temptation that there is, that fullness lies somewhere else outside of what God's given to us.

  24. Even today in Edinburgh in 2026, it hasn't disappeared.

  25. We live in a world that's full of promises, things that are going to help make us whole,

  26. things that are going to help us move beyond the basic understanding that we have and achieve something else.

  27. So maybe we think that these messages are for people who are easily dissuaded.

  28. But actually, when we think about it, we're bombarded with these messages all the time.

  29. The right relationship is going to make you be able to deliver a better life.

  30. The right financial security is going to put you in a place where you can serve the church better.

  31. The most fulfilling experiences that you can have are going to make you a whole person.

  32. The true version of yourself, the person inside that you know that you really are,

  33. that's who you have to be in order to live the life that you're meant to live.

  34. And that's how you're going to be able to be fulfilled.

  35. That's how you're able to be the best version of yourself.

  36. And the thing is that it's not just out there in the world that these things crop up.

  37. Because even inside churches, very often we're tempted to think that, yes, we know Jesus,

  38. but there must be something more that we can have.

  39. There must be a spiritual experience that we're waiting to enjoy.

  40. There must be something that we can add, maybe through our performance,

  41. that's going to make us feel like full-up Christians, completed.

  42. Well, Paul shows us that we do need something.

  43. He uses something truly wonderful.

  44. Well, everything that we need for our salvation and life with God is found in Jesus Christ.

  45. It's not Jesus and something else.

  46. It's not Jesus and human wisdom.

  47. It's not Jesus and particular patterns of behavior.

  48. It's not good religious traditions.

  49. It's Jesus.

  50. Now, Paul says the solution to our mentality of and Jesus,

  51. something and Jesus is to remember the reality of in Jesus.

  52. We can combat and Christ by remembering we're in Christ.

  53. In verses 9 and 10, as Paul puts it, he says,

  54. for in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,

  55. and you've been filled in him who's the head of all rule and authority.

  56. So if you were here a couple of weeks ago,

  57. we read when we preached through chapter 1,

  58. we arrived at verses 15 to 20.

  59. We call that sometimes the Christ hymn.

  60. And the language here is really similar.

  61. It says almost the same thing.

  62. Verse 19 of chapter 1 says,

  63. in him the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.

  64. So it's almost like Paul's circling back in his argument

  65. and getting back to the same idea of Christ's fullness.

  66. But as we're going to see when we look at the passage together tonight,

  67. he actually adds something else to his comment there.

  68. Something incredible.

  69. It's something that I think is really important for us to grasp.

  70. So let's first of all look at the verses 8 to 10

  71. and see that Paul tells us,

  72. don't let emptiness capture your fullness.

  73. So verse 8 begins, and this is a warning.

  74. He says, see to it,

  75. that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit

  76. according to human tradition,

  77. according to the elemental spirits of the world,

  78. and not according to Christ.

  79. So Paul says, see to it.

  80. That means be on your guard, beware, pay attention.

  81. Don't assume that because you're a Christian,

  82. you're immune to deception.

  83. And notice that the language he uses,

  84. he says, takes you captive.

  85. This isn't a picture of someone offering you an alternative truth.

  86. That word is about being stolen away,

  87. or it's got roots tied to being plundered.

  88. This is ideas that can kidnap you from the life that you're living in Christ,

  89. snatched away from the freedom that you have in Jesus.

  90. Imagine a pirate ship pulling up beside a merchant vessel

  91. and overpowering the crew and carrying away its cargo.

  92. That's the kind of idea, I think, that comes across in the language here.

  93. And that's what Paul's saying that these false teachers are doing,

  94. not with ships, not with cutlasses,

  95. but with empty philosophy.

  96. He says that they're promising treasure,

  97. but they're robbing us,

  98. robbing these Colossian Christians of what's truly valuable.

  99. He calls it empty deception.

  100. He uses the word philosophy.

  101. It's not condemning philosophy in general.

  102. This is not that Christians should not think big thoughts about the world

  103. and ask difficult questions.

  104. It's not what he's saying here, I don't think.

  105. He's saying that the problem is the philosophy

  106. that Paul's talking about here, the ideas that Paul's addressing,

  107. are according to human tradition.

  108. So maybe that's a reference to Jewish Christians

  109. putting Old Testament emphasis on new Christians coming in.

  110. We'll maybe see a hint of that in a little while.

  111. And he says this philosophy is according to the elemental spirits of the world.

  112. So that phrase has taken up a lot of ink in a lot of books

  113. of people trying to work out exactly what they're saying here.

  114. But Paul's chief concern is not about the philosophy itself,

  115. rather the one that it's not.

  116. Because he says it's not according to Christ.

  117. Whatever the precise combination of ideas and thoughts

  118. and alternative arguments, the cultural influences maybe

  119. that lay behind what these Colossian Christians are being taught

  120. by false teachers,

  121. its source and its standard are not Jesus.

  122. They're pirate copies of the real truth.

  123. And counterfeits are dangerous

  124. because counterfeits resemble the real thing.

  125. Nobody tries to pass off a piece of paper

  126. with like 10 pounds and a squiggle on it as real money.

  127. You have to make it look like the real thing.

  128. And I think this is what we're getting here.

  129. People are saying things that are convincing

  130. because they look as though they could be truth.

  131. Fundamentally, they're worthless.

  132. Why is it that these Colossian Christians were tempted

  133. by ideas that were eventually and ultimately empty?

  134. Why is it that human beings are tempted at all by emptiness?

  135. Well, is it because we find it hard to believe?

  136. For us even tonight, do we find it hard to believe

  137. that God has already given us everything

  138. that we need as Christians in Jesus?

  139. Because this is the oldest temptation that there is.

  140. This is the oldest temptation that we can read about in the Bible.

  141. You think back to the garden,

  142. the serpent came in and he said to Adam and Eve,

  143. he didn't say God doesn't exist.

  144. He didn't say something completely different

  145. to what they already knew was true.

  146. But he said, is that really what God said?

  147. And he said, you'll be like God's.

  148. He presented an argument that seemed to be in line with the truth.

  149. And even although ultimately it was a lie,

  150. the temptation that there was something more,

  151. something beyond what God had already given to them.

  152. And we've been listening,

  153. human beings have been listening to that same lie ever since.

  154. So we can see it all through the Old Testament

  155. where the Israelites would follow God,

  156. they would obey God, be obedient to him,

  157. worship him in the way that was right,

  158. and things would go well,

  159. and then they would fall away

  160. and they'd be culturally influenced

  161. by the people around about them.

  162. So we're not, I'm not trying to say that we are,

  163. today in Edinburgh, we're going to melt our gold

  164. and we're going to make a golden calf.

  165. But we have to be careful that we're not tempted

  166. to stray away from the truth of the gospel

  167. that's presented to us.

  168. We can be convinced that the things that we need in our lives,

  169. that accompany, that are blessings from God,

  170. are things that we need in our lives

  171. in order to have a full life, to be a full Christian.

  172. What do I mean by that?

  173. Well, I mean that it's easy for us to convince ourselves

  174. that what we need to do is work really hard

  175. in order to build financial stability

  176. so that then we'll be able to live our life for Jesus.

  177. Or what we need to do is seek really hard,

  178. to find the perfect partner

  179. so that we can then feel settled

  180. and then we can live our lives

  181. and devote ourselves to the church.

  182. We can tell ourselves that we're really ready to commit

  183. in generosity, in relationship, in service,

  184. once we're settled and once everything has been put in place.

  185. Of course our works matters.

  186. Of course our work's really important.

  187. But there's a world of difference

  188. between receiving these things as precious gifts from God

  189. and thinking about these things as the missing ingredient

  190. that's stopping us live our life for Christ.

  191. And we can do the same thing with our spirituality as well.

  192. So we're often tempted to think we need to,

  193. we come to church and we don't feel on fire in our hearts.

  194. When we sing, sometimes we come in

  195. and those words are not speaking to us

  196. like they have in the past

  197. and we think there's something missing,

  198. I've lacked something.

  199. God's not with me today.

  200. That's not the case.

  201. When you're in Christ, you have everything you could need.

  202. God is always present,

  203. even when our hearts don't feel warm towards him.

  204. So what's the answer?

  205. Well, the answer for Paul is to look to Jesus

  206. because in verse nine he says,

  207. for in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.

  208. So this is the same thing,

  209. very similar words that Paul uses in chapter one.

  210. The whole fullness of God dwells bodily in Christ.

  211. The eternal son of God truly became man

  212. and he became man in the incarnate Jesus.

  213. There's no other mediator who can bring us to God.

  214. There's no spiritual fullness to be found beyond him.

  215. But then, so we've heard that before in chapter one,

  216. verse 19, but then this is the thing that Paul adds

  217. and it's something astonishing, I think.

  218. He says, the whole fullness of God is in Jesus

  219. and then he adds, and you have been filled in him.

  220. So that fullness, the fullness that dwells in Christ

  221. is the fullness in which we live.

  222. So what's Paul not saying?

  223. Paul's not saying that because the full deity of God

  224. dwells in Jesus, that we will become gods.

  225. That's not what he's saying at all.

  226. He's saying that in Jesus, in Christ,

  227. we lack nothing that we need for our salvation

  228. and for our reconciliation with God the Father.

  229. We've been brought into the richest of relationships with God

  230. through the one in whom all the fullness of God dwells.

  231. And notice too that this is past tense,

  232. something that's already happened.

  233. If you're a believer, you have been filled in him.

  234. So it's not a prize that you might attain

  235. if you work really hard.

  236. If you become a sufficiently proficient Christian,

  237. even although you feel tonight incredibly weak spiritually,

  238. you might struggle with doubt.

  239. You might look around the room

  240. and see all the better Christians than you are.

  241. You might see, you might be walked in with doubts,

  242. even in your mind as you're walking in the door

  243. about Christ, about who God is,

  244. about what he wants for your life.

  245. But you can rest assured

  246. that your ability to feel spiritually full

  247. is different from God's assurance

  248. that you are spiritually full through Jesus.

  249. Because it rests on the fullness of Christ

  250. and being united with him.

  251. So Paul's not saying that because we dwell in Christ,

  252. we have fullness and therefore we have no worries.

  253. That's not what he's saying.

  254. And he's also not saying that

  255. because we have got fullness in Christ,

  256. there's no room for growth for us as Christians.

  257. But he's saying that we don't need anything else

  258. in order to complete what Christ has already begun inside us.

  259. The answer to any feelings of spiritual inadequacy

  260. that you might have tonight,

  261. it's not to find something to add to Jesus.

  262. It's to see more clearly the Jesus that you already have.

  263. And then as if Paul's anticipating the question

  264. from the Colossian Christians asking him,

  265. how can you say that we've been filled in Christ?

  266. This is our second point.

  267. Paul tells them they've been cut off and raised up.

  268. So we look at verse 11 together.

  269. Paul says,

  270. So maybe when Corey was reading through that,

  271. we got to this bit about circumcision

  272. and you felt like it came completely out of the blue.

  273. But I think the central idea is actually pretty amazing.

  274. So Paul takes the Old Testament sign of circumcision

  275. and he shows us that even although that for centuries,

  276. this was the covenant marker of God's people,

  277. the sign of God's people,

  278. it was always pointing to something greater than itself.

  279. The Old Testament teaches us that.

  280. God commanded all the males of the children of Israel to be,

  281. he told Abraham they were to be circumcised in their flesh.

  282. But God in the Old Testament,

  283. even in the Old Testament,

  284. even although this was the sign,

  285. he called his people to be circumcised in their hearts,

  286. to turn from sin and to love the Lord their God.

  287. Deuteronomy chapter 30 verse 6,

    Deuteronomy 30:6

  288. it promises that the Lord himself

  289. will circumcise the hearts of his people

  290. so that they will love him and live.

  291. So this physical sign pointed beyond itself

  292. to something deeper,

  293. to a deeper work of God.

  294. The minor surgery was always a sign of a coming heart surgery.

  295. And now Paul says,

  296. that promised reality has arrived in Christ.

  297. How?

  298. Well, because Christ was cut off for us.

  299. Jesus was circumcised on the eighth day,

  300. like all Jewish boys would have been.

  301. But I don't think it's referring to that here.

  302. I think this is about his death.

  303. Because at the cross,

  304. on the cross,

  305. Jesus was cut off.

  306. His body was given over to suffering

  307. and to death for his people.

  308. But his death,

  309. it wasn't an example of love.

  310. It wasn't an unfortunate circumstance

  311. of human events.

  312. He died as our substitute.

  313. He died in our place.

  314. He bore the judgment that our sin deserved.

  315. He entered into death

  316. so that those who belonged to him

  317. might be delivered from sin

  318. and brought into new life.

  319. The physical sign of the old covenant

  320. had pointed forward to this great work of God

  321. by which his people would be cleansed

  322. and set apart for him.

  323. And now,

  324. in the death and resurrection of Jesus,

  325. the promised saviour has arrived.

  326. We don't need to add

  327. the old covenant sign

  328. of circumcision in the flesh

  329. to the circumcision of the heart,

  330. which is made real in Christ.

  331. The reality to which that is always pointed

  332. has come true.

  333. And Paul makes something else clear.

  334. This circumcision is made without hands.

  335. So being brought into new life

  336. is not something that we can accomplish

  337. for ourselves.

  338. This is a hands-free operation.

  339. It's God at work.

  340. You need God to do for you

  341. what you cannot do for yourself.

  342. And then Paul continues in verse 12.

  343. He says,

  344. having been buried with him in baptism,

  345. in which you were also raised with him

  346. through faith in the powerful working of God

  347. who raised him from the dead.

  348. And notice the repeated words.

  349. He says,

  350. with him,

  351. buried with him,

  352. raised with him.

  353. Paul is describing our union with Christ,

  354. our union with Jesus,

  355. directing attention to the powerful work

  356. that God's done

  357. and that we receive through faith.

  358. And when you think about it,

  359. what a contrast he has here

  360. in the context of his letter

  361. to these false teachers

  362. who are giving empty messages

  363. to the people of the church in Colossae.

  364. The false teachers are saying

  365. there's something more that you need to achieve

  366. or something more that can be achieved.

  367. But Paul's telling the Colossians

  368. that their salvation rests

  369. on something that God's already done.

  370. And there's incredible reassurance for us

  371. in that because our salvation rests

  372. on God's promises

  373. and not on the changing temperature

  374. of our feelings.

  375. Some days when you feel strong in your faith,

  376. other days you feel distracted,

  377. discouraged,

  378. weak.

  379. Some days your sins come right up before you

  380. and you can see them so clearly

  381. and you feel the weight of guilt.

  382. But you see,

  383. your feelings matter,

  384. but they're not the foundation of your faith.

  385. The foundation of your faith

  386. is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ

  387. and God's promise

  388. that those who trust in him

  389. are united to him.

  390. We've been cut off from the old life

  391. in Christ's death,

  392. raised up to new life

  393. through his resurrection.

  394. And then Paul's got something else

  395. extraordinary to tell us.

  396. So thirdly,

  397. Paul tells us the debt is paid

  398. and the enemy is disarmed.

  399. So in verses 13 to 15,

  400. Paul gives us three pictures.

  401. He talks about dead people being made alive,

  402. debts being cancelled

  403. and enemies disarmed.

  404. Verse 13 says,

  405. and you who were dead in your trespasses

  406. and the uncircumcision of your flesh,

  407. God made alive together with him,

  408. having forgiven us all our trespasses.

  409. So Paul reminds the Colossians

  410. of what they were before they knew Christ.

  411. Spiritually, they were dead.

  412. Dead people don't need

  413. a better philosophy for life.

  414. Dead people need resurrection.

  415. And that's what God has done.

  416. God made alive together with him.

  417. The end of,

  418. in the middle of verse 13 says,

  419. God who raised Jesus

  420. has made you alive in Christ

  421. when you put your faith in him.

  422. He's brought you from death to life.

  423. He's forgiven your sins.

  424. He's reconciled you to himself.

  425. And notice that Paul says,

  426. God's forgiven us all our trespasses,

  427. not just the respectable ones,

  428. not just the ones

  429. that were willing to admit

  430. to each other in church.

  431. Not all except the one

  432. that still haunts you,

  433. the thing that you did a long time ago

  434. when you can't sleep.

  435. All of them,

  436. everything,

  437. every wrongdoing,

  438. forgiven in Christ.

  439. And then in verse 14,

  440. Paul helps us see the reality

  441. of what this means.

  442. And it says,

  443. by cancelling the record of debt

  444. that stood against us

  445. with its legal demands,

  446. he set this aside,

  447. nailing it to the cross.

  448. Paul's using the language

  449. of financial debt here,

  450. a huge bill

  451. that you can't possibly pay.

  452. The creditor's got every right

  453. to demand payment from you,

  454. and you've got no way

  455. of meeting that demand.

  456. There's a picture

  457. of our guilt before God.

  458. We failed to love God

  459. with all our heart,

  460. with all our soul,

  461. mind,

  462. and strength.

  463. We don't love our neighbours

  464. in the way that we should.

  465. We sinned in the things

  466. that we've done,

  467. in the things that we've said,

  468. in the things that we thought.

  469. Even our desires

  470. go after wrong things.

  471. We're guilty.

  472. We can't simply erase it

  473. by promising to do better.

  474. Sometimes we might feel

  475. that we can work through it,

  476. through our performance.

  477. But,

  478. as if we could go to God

  479. and say,

  480. look, God,

  481. I'm really sorry,

  482. I'm going to try really hard

  483. not to do this anymore.

  484. And then we might think

  485. that God would say,

  486. okay,

  487. because you've worked so hard,

  488. I'll let it slide.

  489. Maybe we would find

  490. that attractive for ourselves.

  491. We would hate that

  492. if we saw it in other people

  493. because that's not justice,

  494. that's injustice.

  495. And we want a God of justice

  496. to rule over us.

  497. But listen to the words

  498. that Paul uses.

  499. He says,

  500. God has cancelled it

  501. by nailing it to the cross.

  502. I think there's

  503. a couple of different images here.

  504. A written bill of debt,

  505. so like the written bill

  506. that you have to pay.

  507. A written bill of debt,

  508. a written bill of debt,

  509. and then a titulus.

  510. You're allowed one Latin phrase

  511. per sermon.

  512. That is just a Latin word

  513. for a placard

  514. that would be,

  515. that would carry

  516. a guilty person's name

  517. and the crimes

  518. that they'd committed.

  519. They would carry,

  520. a prisoner would carry it,

  521. so if they were being crucified

  522. like Jesus was,

  523. the prisoner would carry it

  524. with their name,

  525. the thing that they did,

  526. and they would carry it

  527. to the cross.

  528. And then it would be

  529. hung above them

  530. as they died.

  531. This is who they are

  532. and this is what they've done.

  533. He's saying that

  534. when Jesus went to the cross,

  535. he carried the titulus

  536. with your sins with him.

  537. Do you remember

  538. that they hammered,

  539. they hammered a placard

  540. over Jesus

  541. and it said,

  542. King of the Jews.

  543. And the,

  544. your sins,

  545. your crimes

  546. were fixed

  547. to that cross too.

  548. only,

  549. your crimes

  550. weren't nailed

  551. to a cross,

  552. they were hammered

  553. into a man.

  554. On the cross,

  555. Jesus,

  556. the God man,

  557. he dealt decisively

  558. with the debt

  559. that you owed

  560. but could never repay.

  561. And he did it

  562. by bearing

  563. the punishment

  564. for your sins

  565. in his own body.

  566. Look,

  567. if you're here tonight

  568. and you're looking

  569. for something

  570. to deal with

  571. the deepest problems

  572. between you

  573. and God,

  574. you need to get this.

  575. We're all guilty sinners.

  576. We can't pay off

  577. the debt of our sin

  578. through our behaviour.

  579. We can't do it

  580. through years

  581. of perfect church attendance,

  582. by serving more faithfully,

  583. by giving the church

  584. more of our money.

  585. We can't do it

  586. by trying to become

  587. a better person.

  588. Those might be good things,

  589. those are good things,

  590. but they can't atone

  591. for sin,

  592. only Jesus can do that.

  593. And what Paul's saying

  594. in these verses

  595. is that only Jesus

  596. can do it

  597. and Jesus has done it.

  598. And just think about

  599. what that means

  600. for our conscience.

  601. The guilt

  602. that you're carrying

  603. about your past sins,

  604. the sin that you keep

  605. turning over and over

  606. in your head,

  607. the one that you keep

  608. returning to

  609. and you think to yourself,

  610. God can never

  611. possibly forgive me

  612. for this

  613. because I come to him

  614. and I know I'm forgiven

  615. and then I just do it again.

  616. How could God

  617. possibly continue

  618. to forgive me?

  619. Well, the answer

  620. is not to deny your sin.

  621. The answer is not

  622. to excuse your sin

  623. or to make peace with it

  624. and accept it

  625. as part of who you are.

  626. But the answer

  627. is to confess it honestly

  628. and then bring it to God.

  629. Look to Jesus

  630. and come to him

  631. because when you're

  632. in Christ,

  633. all your sins

  634. have been dealt with

  635. at the cross.

  636. You've got to repent

  637. of your sin,

  638. of course,

  639. but you're not called

  640. to pay for what Jesus

  641. has already paid.

  642. In Romans 8,

  643. Paul writes,

  644. there's now no condemnation

  645. for those

  646. who are in Christ Jesus.

  647. Not less condemnation,

  648. not postponed condemnation,

  649. no condemnation at all.

  650. And the last thing,

  651. in verse 15,

  652. Paul gives us

  653. one more picture,

  654. another surprising image.

  655. He's disarmed the rulers

  656. and the authorities

  657. and put them to open shame.

  658. This is Jesus

  659. by triumphing

  660. over them in him.

  661. So in the ancient world,

  662. victorious Roman generals

  663. would march back

  664. back into their cities

  665. celebrating the conquest,

  666. but they would bring with them

  667. the enemies

  668. that they defeated

  669. and they would parade them

  670. before the watching crowds

  671. and they would say,

  672. look,

  673. their power's broken.

  674. They've got no hold

  675. over anybody anymore.

  676. Everyone can see

  677. that this is not a threat.

  678. Jesus didn't ride

  679. to victory

  680. in a chariot

  681. with a weapon,

  682. but on a wooden cross.

  683. At Calvary,

  684. just when it looked

  685. like the forces of darkness

  686. had won,

  687. when Jesus was betrayed

  688. and arrested

  689. and mocked

  690. and stripped,

  691. condemned

  692. and ultimately crucified,

  693. it seemed like

  694. his enemies

  695. had silenced him.

  696. But behind the visible events

  697. that were visible to us,

  698. God was accomplishing

  699. something

  700. that no one

  701. could have imagined.

  702. And through the death

  703. of Christ,

  704. God was defeating

  705. the very powers

  706. that held his people

  707. in bondage.

  708. The cross wasn't

  709. an interruption

  710. to God's plan.

  711. It was the decisive means

  712. by which God accomplished

  713. his ultimate victory.

  714. The powers

  715. that held sway

  716. over your life

  717. have been disarmed.

  718. Their claim

  719. to rule over God's people

  720. has come to an end.

  721. It's been broken.

  722. Christ triumphed

  723. over them.

  724. We know,

  725. don't we,

  726. we know that this doesn't mean

  727. that evil has disappeared

  728. from the world.

  729. Satan's no longer active

  730. or that Christians

  731. now live

  732. without temptation,

  733. without suffering.

  734. Of course,

  735. we know that's not true,

  736. but we live in the age

  737. between Christ's

  738. first and second coming.

  739. And so we continue

  740. to wrestle against sin.

  741. We face temptation,

  742. we endure suffering,

  743. we battle spiritual opposition.

  744. But even when we do,

  745. and we do,

  746. we remember

  747. that victory is secured

  748. in Jesus.

  749. There's no spiritual power

  750. that can reinstate

  751. that debt

  752. that Jesus has paid

  753. on the cross.

  754. The one who rules

  755. over every authority,

  756. the one who died for us

  757. and rose again,

  758. he gives us freedom.

  759. Freedom so that we don't live

  760. in fear of any powers.

  761. We've no place

  762. in our lives

  763. for ritual,

  764. for secret knowledge

  765. outside of the Bible.

  766. And we don't live

  767. as prisoners

  768. to our past sins either.

  769. The Christian's life's

  770. not about pretending

  771. that sin isn't real

  772. or that sin isn't important.

  773. It's a life of facing them

  774. with the confidence

  775. that in Christ,

  776. he's already overcome

  777. them all.

  778. Let's pray.

  779. Lord God,

  780. we thank you

  781. for this letter

  782. which paints for us

  783. such an incredible picture

  784. of the work

  785. that Jesus has done.

  786. That on the cross

  787. he bore our sins,

  788. he suffered and died

  789. and rose again.

  790. And Lord,

  791. we praise you

  792. that beyond

  793. our understanding,

  794. we are united

  795. to Christ

  796. in his work

  797. when we put our faith

  798. in him.

  799. We thank you,

  800. Lord,

  801. for that faith,

  802. even that faith

  803. that's a gift from you.

  804. And so,

  805. Lord,

  806. we ask you to help us

  807. to live every day

  808. by that faith

  809. knowing that Jesus

  810. has won the victory

  811. and that we are in Christ.

  812. And we pray this

  813. in Jesus' name.

  814. Amen.
