  1. Well, please turn back with me to 2 Chronicles chapter 32.

    2 Chronicles 32 chapter mention

  2. ! And particularly this evening, our text is from verse 6 down to verse 8.

  3. ! Towards the beginning of that little section we read of King Hezekiah,

  4. ! that he gathered the people together to him in the square at the gate of the city

  5. and spoke encouragingly to them, saying, Be strong and courageous.

  6. You know, one of the greatest needs of the church today is encouragement.

  7. Encouragement from the Lord, encouragement from the Word of God,

  8. encouragement that's, you know, rooted in the Word of God itself,

  9. encouragement that we see in every part, every section of God's Word.

  10. We need to drink that in and be nourished by the very encouragement that the Word gives the church

  11. to give the church courage, to give the church that strength to, well, yes, to face the enemies of our soul,

  12. to face all that is there that seeks to undermine and destroy our confidence in the Lord.

  13. The church needs encouragement.

  14. You need encouragement.

  15. Encouragement as a congregation.

  16. You need encouragement as individuals.

  17. I need encouragement.

  18. We all need encouragement from the very Word of God.

  19. And whether it's in this congregation or elsewhere,

  20. the church as a whole needs to be absorbed in the encouragement that the Word of God gives.

  21. And, of course, we need that encouragement for our daily walk with the Lord,

  22. for the strength that God's Word gives us to fight that good fight of faith,

  23. to fight even the sins within our own hearts.

  24. We need encouragement to be strong, to be courageous,

  25. to trust in the Lord, to have faith in all that God has promised to give to His people.

  26. So we need encouragement because there is that war, that spiritual warfare against the world,

  27. against the flesh, against the devil.

  28. And, you know, these times when we lose encouragement from the Word of God,

  29. when we maybe even seek courage in ourselves,

  30. when we fail to see the Word that God gives us by His infallible Word,

  31. we lose heart.

  32. We lose that strength.

  33. And we're so prone to discouragement.

  34. We can even discourage one another when we turn away from the Word of God

  35. that enlightens us, that directs our hearts.

  36. And we can easily lose that zeal for the Lord

  37. when we're not absorbed in the Word of God constantly.

  38. We lose that courage to face the enemies of our souls.

  39. You know, we're to be foot soldiers in the Lord's army.

  40. But so often when we fail to be encouraged by the Word of God,

  41. we can actually be deserters.

  42. We can shy away from the conflict that the Lord gives to us as soldiers,

  43. soldiers in the Lord Jesus.

  44. We can be deserters when we should be in the front line.

  45. So seek encouragement from the Word of God.

  46. Even seek encouragement this evening as we turn to this particular passage.

  47. Because we all need, as we said, we all need encouragement.

  48. You know, even when you look through Scripture,

  49. you see time and time again the Lord's people needing that encouragement from the Lord,

  50. needing to be strengthened.

  51. When their hearts were low, when they had so much doubt,

  52. even within their own selves,

  53. the Lord's people needing to come before God

  54. and God addressing them with that promise

  55. that He's with them always.

  56. We'll come back to that promise in a moment.

  57. But you know, even when you think of the Lord Jesus,

  58. think of Jesus in His earthly ministry.

  59. He needed encouragement.

  60. The Son of God, the sinless Son of God,

  61. needed encouragement.

  62. He needed the encouragement of His Father.

  63. He needed the encouragement of the Holy Spirit.

  64. And yes, even on those moments before going to the cross,

  65. even there in Gethsemane,

  66. He needed the encouragement of His closest disciples.

  67. If that's the case with the Lord Jesus,

  68. how much more ourselves when we need the encouragement of God's Word.

  69. And you know, there are many, many, as I said,

  70. many examples in Scripture of the Lord's people

  71. needing encouragement, the Word of God entering their hearts.

  72. But I want to turn to this particular section

  73. that perhaps maybe immediately doesn't resonate

  74. with this theme of encouragement for the Lord's people.

  75. But the more we look at it,

  76. I actually will see that this passage

  77. actually speaks volumes to help you,

  78. to help each one of us to be strengthened in the Lord.

  79. It's a great passage.

  80. It's a passage that helps you in whatever circumstances

  81. you might find yourselves in.

  82. And it's a clear message

  83. that, you know, in so many circumstances of life

  84. that the Word of God comes to us

  85. and gives that courage.

  86. It may be that your faith is struggling.

  87. It may be that your faith is even the size

  88. of a tiny grain of mustard seed.

  89. But you need that encouragement from the Lord

  90. to deal with that issue of faith.

  91. It might be the besetting sins of your heart.

  92. You need that courage to come before the Lord

  93. and seek His mercy and seek His forgiveness.

  94. It may be the, well, we might say,

  95. the aggravation of the world

  96. that seeks so often to disrupt and destroy

  97. the witness of the church.

  98. We need that encouragement to stand strong,

  99. to be courageous in that battle,

  100. in that spiritual warfare.

  101. And yes, this is the Old Testament.

  102. This is a passage from the Old Testament.

  103. But let's be reminded that Old Testament examples

  104. are New Testament instructions.

  105. Because what we find even here

  106. in this Old Testament passage,

  107. well, it's fulfillment's found in the New Testament.

  108. You see it in the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus.

  109. And again, we'll come back to that in a moment.

  110. But for this evening,

  111. we seek to look at this passage

  112. for our own encouragement.

  113. We're going to see three things

  114. that the Lord's people there in Judea,

  115. there in the capital, Jerusalem,

  116. three things that we find.

  117. We see in verse 6, the speech,

  118. the speech of encouragement.

  119. And then verse 7 to the first part of verse 8,

  120. the strength of encouragement.

  121. And then verse 8, the second part of verse 8,

  122. the significance of encouragement,

  123. the speech, the strength,

  124. the significance of encouragement.

  125. Let's look at verse 6 again.

  126. And he said,

  127. this is King Hezekiah said,

  128. Come back, commanders, over the people

  129. and gather them together,

  130. tomb in the square at the gate of the city

  131. and spoke encouragingly to them.

  132. Now, let's get the context.

  133. Let's get the background to this.

  134. Jerusalem, the capital city

  135. of the southern kingdom of Judea,

  136. Jerusalem's facing a mighty warrior.

  137. It's facing this king of Assyria,

  138. this man, Sennacherib.

  139. And this king's a fierce king.

  140. He's a fierce king of a worrying nation,

  141. a nation that likes to express its power

  142. by war.

  143. And the king of Assyria,

  144. he's in an expansion.

  145. He intends to conquer the whole of Judah.

  146. He intends to capture Judah's capital.

  147. He intends to capture Jerusalem.

  148. He intends to extend his power.

  149. He's one of these kings

  150. that we find in the Old Testament

  151. and find even leaders up to this present day.

  152. Kings who have no love for the Lord,

  153. no obedience to the one true God.

  154. And against him is King Hezekiah.

  155. In fact, you know, of all the kings of Judah,

  156. he's one of the more faithful kings,

  157. kings of that southern kingdom.

  158. Anyway, what do we find?

  159. We find King Hezekiah exercising wisdom.

  160. He knows that the king of Assyria is out

  161. to take his capital.

  162. So what do we find?

  163. We see that he reorganizes the defenses of Jerusalem.

  164. We see that at the beginning of chapter 32,

  165. as we read there.

  166. He cuts off the water supply

  167. that doesn't want the king of Assyria

  168. and his army to be, you know,

  169. refreshed by the water outside the city.

  170. And he strengthens the defenses of the city,

  171. ensures that more weapons are going to be made

  172. in the event of warfare, battle.

  173. And this is, of course, wisdom.

  174. This is sound human responsibility.

  175. There's a real enemy out there.

  176. There's got to be that preparation for battle.

  177. But together with all these practical aspects

  178. of the preparation, what does he do?

  179. He uses words.

  180. He knows that all these practical preparations,

  181. the strengthening of the Milo,

  182. the strengthening of the city defenses,

  183. all the weapons that are going to be made.

  184. He knows that that's not going to be enough.

  185. Because he's got to strengthen

  186. the hearts of the people.

  187. There's a real enemy out there.

  188. The people are afraid.

  189. And the people need to be strengthened in their hearts.

  190. And that's what we see in verse 6.

  191. He does something that has such a profound effect,

  192. a strengthening effect on the people of Jerusalem.

  193. As we read there,

  194. he speaks words of encouragement.

  195. And he speaks directly to the people.

  196. I mean, this is leadership.

  197. This is leadership that, you know,

  198. is showing so much wisdom, so much power.

  199. This is wisdom in a leader of a people.

  200. I mean, the people themselves,

  201. they would have known about this king,

  202. King Assyria,

  203. this King Assyria of Assyria,

  204. this King Sennacherib.

  205. He's already shown his power.

  206. He's already shown his power in the kingdom of Judah.

  207. He's already captured a number of cities.

  208. In fact, we're told elsewhere

  209. that he'd taken 46 of Judah's fortified cities.

  210. He's already captured 200,000 inhabitants.

  211. But Hezekiah is not going to let the people,

  212. you know,

  213. suffer in fear.

  214. He's going to encourage them.

  215. But, you know,

  216. before we see exactly what the king,

  217. what King Hezekiah says to the people,

  218. let's just pause.

  219. Let's just pause here

  220. and just assess what's happening.

  221. You see,

  222. the Hebrew word for encourage,

  223. it's a word that speaks of the mind.

  224. It speaks of you're engaging your mind.

  225. Because in the mind,

  226. there's strength.

  227. Strength and courage.

  228. All the weapons in Jerusalem,

  229. all the fortified structures

  230. in that great city,

  231. well,

  232. wouldn't win the battle

  233. unless the people themselves,

  234. unless their minds were strong in the Lord,

  235. unless their hearts were so strong

  236. in trusting in the one true God.

  237. That's what we see,

  238. we're going to see.

  239. We're going to see that

  240. their minds strengthened

  241. in the knowledge

  242. that the Lord was with them.

  243. And, you know,

  244. we can say this surely,

  245. say this certainly

  246. for our own encouragement.

  247. There's that spiritual warfare

  248. that exists every single day of your life.

  249. If you're a Christian,

  250. you're engaged in spiritual warfare.

  251. I mean,

  252. King Hezekiah,

  253. He spoke words of encouragement.

  254. He encouraged them.

  255. He spoke words to them.

  256. He did so to strengthen their minds

  257. so that they had that resolve

  258. and commitment to trust,

  259. trust in the one true God.

  260. So there's the king

  261. speaking to the people directly.

  262. And of course,

  263. we have another king.

  264. We have another king

  265. who speaks words directly to us,

  266. words of encouragement,

  267. words that strengthen your mind

  268. in every situation of life.

  269. When you hear the words of Jesus say to you,

  270. come unto me,

  271. all you who labor,

  272. come unto me,

  273. all you who are heavy laden,

  274. and I'll give you rest.

  275. You know,

  276. the words of Jesus

  277. are such words of encouragement

  278. because it's the voice of grace,

  279. it's the voice of love,

  280. it's the voice of mercy,

  281. it's the voice of power,

  282. it's the voice we trust.

  283. It's no artificial intelligence.

  284. This is the supreme intelligence

  285. of the one true God,

  286. the one true Savior speaking,

  287. and speaking

  288. through the power of the Holy Spirit

  289. that heals a broken heart

  290. by the word of God.

  291. It's the word that soothes

  292. a troubled mind

  293. when your minds are troubled

  294. by this and by that.

  295. It's that word of encouragement

  296. that strengthens you

  297. for the battles ahead.

  298. It's that word,

  299. as we say,

  300. that's spoken to you in love

  301. by a loving Savior.

  302. Well, listen to these words.

  303. I'm going to read some of the words

  304. that Jesus uttered,

  305. words of encouragement,

  306. and I pray that

  307. as these words are spoken,

  308. that you'll engage your minds

  309. to absorb them,

  310. not just absorb them,

  311. but apply them

  312. in your own situation.

  313. Because,

  314. think of the words of encouragement

  315. that Jesus spoke to his disciples.

  316. You know,

  317. if you're suffering,

  318. maybe you're suffering

  319. for being a Christian,

  320. maybe you're getting assaults

  321. for following the Lord Jesus.

  322. Will you listen to the voice of Jesus

  323. speak to you,

  324. encouraging you

  325. for your stand for the truth?

  326. Listen to the words

  327. that Jesus spoke

  328. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  329. Matthew 5.

  330. Blessed are those

  331. who are persecuted

  332. for righteousness,

  333. for righteousness' sake,

  334. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  335. Maybe you're anxious

  336. about something in the future.

  337. Maybe you're anxious

  338. about will God provide for you.

  339. Will you listen to the voice

  340. of Jesus encouraging you?

  341. Matthew 6,

  342. again,

  343. Sermon on the Mount.

  344. If God so clothes the grass

  345. of the field

  346. at which today is alive

  347. and tomorrow is thrown

  348. into the oven,

  349. will he not much more

  350. clothe you,

  351. O you of little faith?

  352. when you come before God

  353. in prayer,

  354. when you make your petitions

  355. before him,

  356. you hear the voice of Jesus

  357. speak encouragingly to you.

  358. Again,

  359. Sermon on the Mount,

  360. ask and it will be given to you.

  361. Seek and you will find.

  362. Knock and it will be opened to you

  363. for everyone who asks,

  364. receives.

  365. And the one who seeks,

  366. finds.

  367. And to the one who knocks,

  368. it will be opened.

  369. You see,

  370. when we absorb

  371. the truth of Jesus' words

  372. and apply that truth,

  373. the word of God,

  374. the word of the Savior,

  375. it does calm fears.

  376. It allays doubts.

  377. It speaks to heart and mind

  378. that receives the word

  379. with gladness,

  380. that receives the word

  381. by faith

  382. and puts that word

  383. into practice

  384. so that you are encouraged

  385. that you are strengthened.

  386. So you're given that courage

  387. to face

  388. what the Lord

  389. and his providence

  390. has given you.

  391. And you know that

  392. he's with you.

  393. With you to strengthen you.

  394. With you to give you

  395. that courage.

  396. And it's that strength

  397. that, you know,

  398. really we want to look at

  399. in relation to King Hezekiah

  400. and the people

  401. that we turn to.

  402. These great words,

  403. these great words of strength,

  404. the strength of encouragement

  405. that we see in verse 7

  406. to the first part of verse 8.

  407. Again, let's read these words.

  408. Be strong and courageous.

  409. Do not be afraid

  410. or dismayed

  411. before the king of Assyria

  412. and all the horde

  413. that is with him.

  414. For there are more with us

  415. than with him.

  416. With him

  417. is an arm of flesh,

  418. but with us

  419. is the Lord our God

  420. to help us

  421. and to fight our battles.

  422. I've read these words already.

  423. I've read these words twice.

  424. Because these are words of power.

  425. Because these words,

  426. if we listen to them,

  427. if we apply them,

  428. you'll know that these words

  429. speak to your very heart.

  430. They speak to your heart.

  431. They speak to your mind.

  432. Now, of course,

  433. these aren't the first time,

  434. this isn't the first time

  435. that these particular words

  436. are read in Scripture,

  437. heard in Scripture.

  438. You know the time

  439. when Joshua was about

  440. to succeed Moses

  441. to take the people,

  442. the people of Israel

  443. into the promised land.

  444. Remember,

  445. Moses was dying.

  446. He knew that he himself

  447. wouldn't enter

  448. the promised land,

  449. but his successor,

  450. Joshua,

  451. would.

  452. Joshua,

  453. being a relatively young man,

  454. afraid of leading

  455. that large number

  456. of Israelites.

  457. And what does

  458. Moses say to Joshua?

  459. He says to Joshua,

  460. as we read in

  461. the Deuteronomy,

  462. beginning of Joshua,

  463. Joshua,

  464. be strong and courageous.

  465. Be strong and courageous.

  466. But it wasn't simply

  467. that command

  468. to be strong and courageous.

  469. It wasn't just

  470. be strong and courageous

  471. full stop.

  472. It was be strong

  473. in the Lord.

  474. Be strong in the Lord

  475. and in the power

  476. of his might.

  477. Because any time

  478. we're called

  479. to be strong and courageous,

  480. it's always,

  481. always

  482. in connection

  483. with the one true God.

  484. Always

  485. before the one

  486. who promises

  487. to be with you always.

  488. And you know,

  489. when Hezekiah

  490. gives that command

  491. to the people,

  492. to the,

  493. well certainly

  494. in the first instance

  495. to the leaders,

  496. he tells them

  497. to be strong

  498. and courageous.

  499. And again,

  500. as we said,

  501. it's always

  502. an association

  503. with the one true God.

  504. Because we're told

  505. of,

  506. well,

  507. the king of,

  508. king Hezekiah,

  509. with him,

  510. with Sennacherib

  511. is an arm of flesh.

  512. But with us

  513. is the Lord our God

  514. to help us

  515. and to fight

  516. our battles.

  517. Now you might say,

  518. why do the people

  519. need to hear these words,

  520. these particular words?

  521. What did Hezekiah say

  522. that actually

  523. calmed the people?

  524. And

  525. what can we learn

  526. for ourselves

  527. when we have

  528. so many fears,

  529. so many issues

  530. in our own lives?

  531. What do these words

  532. speak to us?

  533. Or how do these words

  534. speak to us

  535. this evening?

  536. Well,

  537. let's look at the people

  538. first of all.

  539. These people,

  540. they had real fears.

  541. I mean,

  542. as we said,

  543. the king of Assyria,

  544. the Assyrian nation,

  545. they were known,

  546. they had a reputation.

  547. They had a reputation

  548. for just sheer destruction,

  549. throwing no mercy

  550. to their enemies.

  551. And,

  552. you know,

  553. they'd already

  554. exercised that ruthlessness

  555. in so many previous battles.

  556. They'd already

  557. conquered the northern

  558. kingdom of Israel.

  559. That happened

  560. some 20 years before.

  561. 20 years,

  562. not a long time.

  563. The people of

  564. Judah,

  565. they'd still know

  566. of what happened

  567. to their northern neighbors.

  568. The people of Israel

  569. were carried off

  570. to the land of Assyria.

  571. As we know now,

  572. it's the northern

  573. Iraq,

  574. southern Turkey,

  575. I suppose,

  576. we could say.

  577. Well,

  578. that army was fierce.

  579. King Hezekiah

  580. had a knowledge

  581. of that people.

  582. The people themselves

  583. of Judah

  584. had that knowledge

  585. of this ruthless army.

  586. in fact,

  587. go to the start

  588. of Isaiah chapter 36.

    Isaiah 36 chapter mention

  589. And we read there

  590. of what we mentioned earlier,

  591. the king of Assyria.

  592. He'd taken

  593. so many fortified

  594. cities of Judah

  595. and now he's

  596. at the walls

  597. of Jerusalem.

  598. The people there,

  599. they're in Jerusalem.

  600. They can look over

  601. the walls.

  602. They can see

  603. that mighty army

  604. in front of them.

  605. They could see

  606. it's a mighty force.

  607. Tens of thousands

  608. of highly equipped

  609. soldiers

  610. and they're just

  611. about to attack.

  612. And there was

  613. obviously real fear

  614. in the city.

  615. The city that's

  616. been besieged.

  617. Real fear.

  618. Are they going

  619. to suffer the same

  620. way that their

  621. fellow Judeans

  622. suffered?

  623. Are they going

  624. to be taken

  625. to Assyria

  626. like their northern

  627. neighbors in Israel?

  628. Are they ever going

  629. to see their

  630. beloved Jerusalem

  631. again if they're

  632. taken away

  633. as captors?

  634. The enemy's real.

  635. The danger's real.

  636. And their fears,

  637. they were real.

  638. And we know

  639. of course ourselves,

  640. the enemy of our

  641. souls, that enemy's

  642. real.

  643. Satan's real.

  644. The demons are real.

  645. The danger of

  646. satanic attack

  647. every day of our

  648. lives, that's real.

  649. The danger of

  650. leading, being led

  651. to places of

  652. we might say

  653. satanic reality,

  654. that's real.

  655. you face a real

  656. foe, you face a

  657. real enemy.

  658. And therefore, we

  659. need to hear the

  660. words of encouragement

  661. that God gives us

  662. in his word to be

  663. strong in the Lord

  664. and the power of

  665. his might.

  666. We need to be

  667. given the word of

  668. God into our

  669. hearts so that we

  670. are strong in the

  671. Lord, so that we

  672. are courageous.

  673. Remember the words

  674. that Paul spoke to

  675. the Philippians,

  676. Philippians chapter

  677. four.

  678. The people in that

  679. church, they were

  680. anxious.

  681. But Paul wrote to

  682. the church there when

  683. he said, the Lord is

  684. at hand.

  685. And I pray that you'll

  686. know that this evening,

  687. even for yourselves

  688. individually or as a

  689. family or as couples

  690. or as a congregation.

  691. The Lord is at hand.

  692. The Lord is near.

  693. You know, the people

  694. all these many years

  695. ago, they had real

  696. fears.

  697. But they also had a

  698. real God.

  699. The real God is we

  700. have a real God, the

  701. one true God whose

  702. power is real.

  703. Whose power is greater

  704. than all our enemies.

  705. And that's what

  706. Hezekiah knows.

  707. That's what he assures

  708. the people with.

  709. For there are more

  710. with us than with

  711. him.

  712. You know, the people

  713. there, as I said,

  714. they're looking out to

  715. this vast army outside

  716. Jerusalem.

  717. It's certainly greater

  718. than size and the

  719. population in that

  720. city itself.

  721. Certainly greater than

  722. the armed men of

  723. Jerusalem.

  724. But Hezekiah knows

  725. his God.

  726. The more who are

  727. with us.

  728. The more who are

  729. with the people of

  730. Jerusalem.

  731. And when Hezekiah

  732. tells that the more

  733. who are with us,

  734. he's telling of

  735. Almighty God.

  736. He's telling of the

  737. Lord of hosts,

  738. the Lord of armies.

  739. He's telling of the

  740. God whose greatness

  741. is greater than any

  742. human might,

  743. any human power.

  744. And of course,

  745. we know that

  746. ourselves.

  747. I hope we know that

  748. ourselves.

  749. Old Testament

  750. examples, as we

  751. said, New Testament

  752. instructions.

  753. Remember what John

  754. wrote to his readers,

  755. John the Apostle,

  756. when those in the

  757. church were facing

  758. the enemy of their

  759. souls.

  760. 1 John 4, verse 4,

    1 John 4:4

  761. more.

  762. He who is in you

  763. is greater than he

  764. who is in the

  765. world.

  766. You're not alone.

  767. You're not alone.

  768. There are more with

  769. us than with Him.

  770. More.

  771. More in terms of

  772. power.

  773. More in terms of

  774. might.

  775. More in terms of

  776. greatness.

  777. More in terms of the

  778. one who's already won

  779. that victory over sin,

  780. over Satan, over

  781. death itself.

  782. And if you know the

  783. Lord, you're God.

  784. You have that

  785. assurance.

  786. You have that

  787. promise that the

  788. Lord gives you when

  789. He says, I am with

  790. you.

  791. Because you have

  792. with you the

  793. Lord of glory.

  794. Jesus.

  795. Jesus has conquered

  796. sin.

  797. He's conquered

  798. Satan.

  799. He did that on the

  800. cross of Calvary.

  801. He's conquered death

  802. itself when He rose

  803. from the grave.

  804. And so you have

  805. that assurance that

  806. you're not alone in

  807. that good fight of

  808. faith.

  809. As has been said

  810. before, one plus

  811. God is a majority.

  812. You feel alone when

  813. you feel as if maybe

  814. there's no one else

  815. to help.

  816. You remember, one

  817. plus God is a

  818. majority.

  819. You've got that

  820. victory in your

  821. heart.

  822. You've got that

  823. assurance of, well,

  824. of victory in the

  825. Lord Jesus.

  826. He's already faced

  827. the enemy of your

  828. soul.

  829. He's won that

  830. victory.

  831. So listen to the

  832. words of encouragement

  833. that the Lord Jesus

  834. gives you.

  835. There are more

  836. with us than

  837. with him.

  838. More with us than

  839. with the enemy of

  840. our souls.

  841. Well, you act upon

  842. these words.

  843. You act upon the

  844. words that Hezekiah

  845. gave to the people

  846. to encourage them.

  847. Because these

  848. words, of course,

  849. were ultimately

  850. given to Hezekiah

  851. by the word of

  852. truth, by the

  853. very Lord our

  854. Savior.

  855. Because whatever

  856. language you read

  857. these words in,

  858. if you read them

  859. in English,

  860. Gaelic, Hebrew,

  861. all the same,

  862. they tell of the

  863. greatness of God

  864. in contrast to the

  865. weakness of the

  866. enemy of our

  867. souls.

  868. With Him is an

  869. arm of flesh,

  870. but with us is the

  871. Lord our God to

  872. help us and to

  873. fight our

  874. battles.

  875. You see the

  876. contrast?

  877. On the one

  878. hand, there's

  879. the king of

  880. Assyria.

  881. There's the

  882. vast horde of

  883. army that he's

  884. got before him.

  885. They look

  886. powerful, but

  887. they're of minimal

  888. power, minimal

  889. force.

  890. As Hezekiah calls

  891. them, he calls

  892. them a single

  893. arm of flesh.

  894. Just a single

  895. arm, a weak

  896. human individual's

  897. arm.

  898. But opposed to

  899. that human

  900. weakness is

  901. Almighty God.

  902. Almighty God,

  903. the Lord God

  904. of Israel, the

  905. Lord God of

  906. His people, the

  907. Lord God of

  908. His church.

  909. You know, think

  910. of an arm of

  911. flesh.

  912. It tells of

  913. weakness.

  914. I mean, no

  915. power, the most

  916. powerful human

  917. being in the

  918. world still has

  919. that arm of

  920. flesh.

  921. That arm of

  922. flesh in

  923. relation to the

  924. God of all

  925. power.

  926. I mean, the

  927. contrast couldn't

  928. be greater.

  929. Assyria there,

  930. yes, it's a

  931. great nation,

  932. it's a powerful

  933. nation, but it's

  934. been compared

  935. to that arm

  936. of flesh.

  937. And the

  938. people of

  939. Jerusalem, they

  940. have the

  941. Lord, their

  942. God.

  943. Don't ever

  944. forget that.

  945. Don't ever

  946. forget that

  947. truth.

  948. The Lord

  949. God is

  950. with you.

  951. It's that

  952. little preposition,

  953. that little

  954. word with.

  955. It's a little

  956. word in any

  957. language.

  958. You can, if

  959. you've got

  960. Gaelic Bibles,

  961. a little word

  962. there, English

  963. Bibles, whatever.

  964. But notice it's

  965. mentioned twice,

  966. even twice in

  967. verse 8.

  968. It's that little

  969. word with, it's

  970. actually a bit

  971. like a stick of

  972. dynamite.

  973. It's a little

  974. thing that's got

  975. so much power.

  976. Well, that's

  977. what this word

  978. with is in

  979. relation to

  980. God and

  981. ourselves.

  982. The promise

  983. that God

  984. gives to be

  985. with his

  986. people.

  987. The promise

  988. that our

  989. faithful God

  990. gives.

  991. You know, in

  992. so many

  993. examples, this

  994. morning in the

  995. High Free,

  996. Hugh Ferrier,

  997. the minister

  998. was preaching

  999. on the

  1000. encounter that

  1001. Moses had

  1002. with God

  1003. and God

  1004. assuring Moses

  1005. when Moses was

  1006. about to lead

  1007. the children

  1008. of Israel

  1009. towards the

  1010. promised land,

  1011. God saying

  1012. to a very

  1013. reluctant

  1014. Moses,

  1015. God saying

  1016. to him,

  1017. I am with

  1018. you.

  1019. And you know,

  1020. the more we

  1021. see this

  1022. expression, I

  1023. am with

  1024. you, or the

  1025. Lord with

  1026. us, we see

  1027. the greatness

  1028. of that

  1029. little

  1030. preposition

  1031. that connects

  1032. God with

  1033. us.

  1034. Even before

  1035. Jesus was

  1036. born, we

  1037. read in

  1038. Matthew's

  1039. Gospel that

  1040. they shall

  1041. call his

  1042. name Emmanuel,

  1043. which means

  1044. God with

  1045. us.

  1046. And it's

  1047. that abiding

  1048. presence of

  1049. our Lord and

  1050. Saviour when

  1051. Jesus was

  1052. with his

  1053. disciples, when

  1054. Jesus, you

  1055. know, declared

  1056. to them,

  1057. behold, I am

  1058. with you

  1059. always, even

  1060. to the end

  1061. of the age.

  1062. God's

  1063. love.

  1064. And it's

  1065. that promise

  1066. of God's

  1067. abiding

  1068. presence with

  1069. you, the

  1070. promise of

  1071. the abiding

  1072. presence of

  1073. the Holy

  1074. Spirit within

  1075. the heart of

  1076. every believer

  1077. in the Lord

  1078. Jesus.

  1079. Remember what

  1080. Jesus said to

  1081. his disciples

  1082. as he says

  1083. to us,

  1084. John 14,

  1085. I will ask

  1086. the Father

  1087. and he will

  1088. give you

  1089. another helper

  1090. to be with

  1091. you forever,

  1092. even the

  1093. Spirit of

  1094. Truth, whom

  1095. the world

  1096. cannot receive

  1097. because it

  1098. neither sees

  1099. him nor

  1100. knows him,

  1101. you know

  1102. him for

  1103. he dwells

  1104. with you

  1105. and will

  1106. be in

  1107. you.

  1108. The Lord

  1109. with you.

  1110. I mean,

  1111. that's the

  1112. greatest of

  1113. intimacy.

  1114. That's the

  1115. greatest

  1116. closeness that

  1117. we can ever

  1118. have in our

  1119. lives experience.

  1120. The Lord

  1121. with you.

  1122. And when

  1123. you take

  1124. that to

  1125. heart, when

  1126. you absorb

  1127. that in

  1128. your mind,

  1129. you're

  1130. given that

  1131. strength for

  1132. the battle,

  1133. you're given

  1134. that encouragement

  1135. of faith to

  1136. trust in God

  1137. in every

  1138. single aspect

  1139. of your

  1140. lives.

  1141. You'll be

  1142. able to

  1143. stand strong

  1144. in the face

  1145. of all that

  1146. opposition that

  1147. seeks to

  1148. distance you

  1149. from your

  1150. Lord and

  1151. Saviour.

  1152. And that

  1153. knowledge that

  1154. the Lord is

  1155. with you

  1156. enables you to

  1157. have that

  1158. strength,

  1159. to face

  1160. the present,

  1161. to face

  1162. the future

  1163. knowing that

  1164. he'll never

  1165. leave you

  1166. because he's

  1167. with you

  1168. always.

  1169. Yes, we're

  1170. weak in

  1171. ourselves.

  1172. We need that

  1173. strengthening.

  1174. I'm weak.

  1175. We're all

  1176. weak.

  1177. But know

  1178. that you're

  1179. given that

  1180. strength.

  1181. His word,

  1182. his strength

  1183. is made

  1184. perfect in

  1185. our weakness.

  1186. The strength

  1187. of his word,

  1188. the strength

  1189. of his

  1190. encouragement.

  1191. And that

  1192. gives you

  1193. that confidence.

  1194. That confidence

  1195. to know that

  1196. you're not

  1197. on your own.

  1198. And that's

  1199. the confidence

  1200. that the

  1201. people were

  1202. given.

  1203. They were

  1204. given to

  1205. know that

  1206. they weren't

  1207. on their

  1208. own,

  1209. that the

  1210. Lord was

  1211. with them.

  1212. And that's

  1213. what we see

  1214. finally in the

  1215. significance of

  1216. encouragement that

  1217. we read there in

  1218. the second part of

  1219. verse 8.

  1220. And the people

  1221. took confidence

  1222. from the words

  1223. of Hezekiah,

  1224. king of Judah.

  1225. The people

  1226. took confidence

  1227. from the words

  1228. of Hezekiah,

  1229. king of Judah.

  1230. You know,

  1231. this expression

  1232. took confidence.

  1233. The word in the

  1234. original language

  1235. just sort of

  1236. speaks of

  1237. support.

  1238. The people

  1239. were supported

  1240. in their hearts,

  1241. they were supported

  1242. in their minds,

  1243. they were

  1244. strengthened.

  1245. So the words

  1246. that Hezekiah

  1247. gave to the

  1248. people,

  1249. that was

  1250. sufficient.

  1251. That transformed

  1252. the real fear

  1253. that the people

  1254. had to real

  1255. faith,

  1256. that they could

  1257. trust in the

  1258. Lord despite

  1259. the outward

  1260. evidence of

  1261. the greater

  1262. power of

  1263. opposition.

  1264. That was the

  1265. outer evidence.

  1266. but the

  1267. reality was

  1268. so different.

  1269. And,

  1270. well,

  1271. what did we

  1272. read there?

  1273. The knock-on

  1274. effect of

  1275. these words

  1276. of Hezekiah.

  1277. The people

  1278. didn't lose

  1279. heart.

  1280. Their confidence

  1281. wasn't placed

  1282. even in the

  1283. weapons that

  1284. had been

  1285. formed,

  1286. but the

  1287. very word

  1288. of God.

  1289. You know,

  1290. in Hezekiah's

  1291. case,

  1292. only a man

  1293. of faith

  1294. could have

  1295. pronounced

  1296. these words.

  1297. Only a man

  1298. of true faith

  1299. could have

  1300. that confidence

  1301. that what

  1302. the Lord

  1303. had said

  1304. to him

  1305. was true

  1306. would be

  1307. applied.

  1308. And in the

  1309. confidence of

  1310. the Lord,

  1311. what do we

  1312. find?

  1313. The people,

  1314. they've got

  1315. confidence in

  1316. the Lord.

  1317. They're not

  1318. going to be

  1319. overcome when

  1320. the enemy's

  1321. at the gate.

  1322. And you read

  1323. on, if you

  1324. were to have

  1325. read on in

  1326. the passage

  1327. in chapter

  1328. 32,

  1329. we see there

  1330. the confidence

  1331. of the people

  1332. is rewarded.

  1333. King Hezekiah

  1334. didn't prevail

  1335. even though

  1336. he sought

  1337. to overcome

  1338. Jerusalem.

  1339. Yes, he was

  1340. terrifying the

  1341. people at one

  1342. stage, but the

  1343. people would

  1344. not be overcome.

  1345. The king

  1346. had taunted

  1347. the people.

  1348. King Sinacharab

  1349. said to the

  1350. people,

  1351. you know,

  1352. your God's

  1353. just another

  1354. one of the

  1355. many gods.

  1356. But God

  1357. had the last

  1358. word, the one

  1359. true God

  1360. had the last

  1361. word and not

  1362. King Sinacharab.

  1363. God had the

  1364. victory over

  1365. the arm of

  1366. flesh.

  1367. And you

  1368. know, as you

  1369. dwell in that

  1370. truth, dwell in

  1371. the confidence

  1372. that the people

  1373. had at that

  1374. time, the

  1375. people that

  1376. had in the

  1377. one true

  1378. God.

  1379. Let's be

  1380. clear about

  1381. that word

  1382. confidence,

  1383. that word

  1384. support.

  1385. It wasn't

  1386. self-confidence.

  1387. I mean, the

  1388. king of Assyria,

  1389. he had self-confidence.

  1390. And it wasn't

  1391. even confidence in

  1392. their own

  1393. abilities and

  1394. their own

  1395. equipment.

  1396. It wasn't

  1397. that that

  1398. enabled them to

  1399. stand against

  1400. the enemy.

  1401. It was

  1402. confidence in

  1403. God the

  1404. Lord.

  1405. It was

  1406. their absolute

  1407. assurance that

  1408. these words that

  1409. Hezekiah had

  1410. spoken were

  1411. true.

  1412. The confidence

  1413. that God would

  1414. not abandon

  1415. his people.

  1416. He was with

  1417. them to

  1418. deliver them

  1419. from that

  1420. powerful enemy.

  1421. And I hope

  1422. and I trust

  1423. and I pray that

  1424. that's an

  1425. encouragement for

  1426. you this

  1427. evening.

  1428. That you can

  1429. and must depend

  1430. on God in

  1431. all your

  1432. ways in

  1433. every aspect

  1434. of your

  1435. life.

  1436. To have

  1437. that trust,

  1438. that full

  1439. trust that

  1440. He'll never

  1441. leave you,

  1442. never desert

  1443. you.

  1444. Even in the

  1445. most hostile

  1446. and difficult

  1447. of situations

  1448. that we all

  1449. face in our

  1450. lives, whether

  1451. individually as I

  1452. said or even

  1453. as congregations,

  1454. God is with

  1455. you always.

  1456. You might have

  1457. at times in

  1458. your life the

  1459. dark night of

  1460. your soul.

  1461. The psalmist of

  1462. Psalm 88 had

  1463. that experience.

  1464. And yet we

  1465. know even

  1466. from that

  1467. psalm that

  1468. he had not

  1469. lost all

  1470. hope.

  1471. God was

  1472. still his

  1473. Lord.

  1474. And maybe

  1475. you have

  1476. trials for

  1477. a season but

  1478. they're only

  1479. for a season.

  1480. The Lord's

  1481. with you.

  1482. Even when you

  1483. have to face

  1484. particular decisions

  1485. even this week,

  1486. important decisions,

  1487. know that the

  1488. Lord is with

  1489. you to lead

  1490. you and guide

  1491. you to give

  1492. you that wisdom

  1493. from above.

  1494. And yes,

  1495. even as we

  1496. had even for

  1497. so many in

  1498. the latter

  1499. years of our

  1500. lives, have

  1501. that confidence

  1502. to know that

  1503. the Lord is

  1504. with you.

  1505. He's with you

  1506. that his rod

  1507. and staff

  1508. comfort you.

  1509. So be

  1510. encouraged then

  1511. in the word

  1512. that the Lord

  1513. has given us

  1514. this evening.

  1515. Be encouraged

  1516. even as you

  1517. leave this

  1518. building, as

  1519. you go back

  1520. to your homes,

  1521. knowing that

  1522. as you have

  1523. met with the

  1524. Lord and his

  1525. word, you've

  1526. been given

  1527. that encouragement

  1528. to fight

  1529. that good

  1530. fight of

  1531. faith.

  1532. There's all

  1533. that contrast

  1534. in the world

  1535. between the

  1536. believer who

  1537. trusts in the

  1538. Lord and

  1539. even the

  1540. believer who

  1541. at times

  1542. lacks faith.

  1543. But of course

  1544. the greatest

  1545. contrast of

  1546. all is the

  1547. one who has

  1548. even that

  1549. faith the

  1550. size of a

  1551. mustard seed

  1552. to the one

  1553. who has no

  1554. faith at all.

  1555. If there's

  1556. anyone here

  1557. this evening

  1558. and you

  1559. don't have

  1560. that faith

  1561. in the one

  1562. true God

  1563. will remember

  1564. this.

  1565. Are you

  1566. trusting in

  1567. the arm of

  1568. flesh?

  1569. Are you

  1570. trusting in

  1571. the one who

  1572. will never

  1573. leave you,

  1574. never forsake

  1575. you?

  1576. The one who

  1577. promises to

  1578. be with you

  1579. always, even

  1580. to the very

  1581. end of the

  1582. age?

  1583. Will you

  1584. trust in the

  1585. God who

  1586. supports or

  1587. the gods

  1588. who disappoint?

  1589. May you have

  1590. your faith

  1591. not in the

  1592. arm of

  1593. flesh,

  1594. the God,

  1595. the one

  1596. true God

  1597. who knows

  1598. you, who

  1599. sees you,

  1600. and who

  1601. loves you.

  1602. May God

  1603. bless to us

  1604. his word.

  1605. Let's join

  1606. together now

  1607. in prayer.

  1608. Let us

  1609. pray.

  1610. Our

  1611. Lord, our

  1612. God, our

  1613. Heavenly

  1614. Father, you

  1615. who are the

  1616. God of

  1617. power and

  1618. might, and

  1619. you who

  1620. have already

  1621. shown your

  1622. power and

  1623. might in

  1624. the defeat

  1625. of Satan

  1626. and the

  1627. cross, in

  1628. the triumph

  1629. of Jesus

  1630. over death,

  1631. faith.

  1632. And may

  1633. we all

  1634. know that

  1635. triumph in

  1636. our own

  1637. lives.

  1638. May we

  1639. go forward

  1640. in faith,

  1641. beholding

  1642. our God,

  1643. not trusting

  1644. in the

  1645. arm of

  1646. flesh that

  1647. so often

  1648. we lean

  1649. on, but

  1650. trusting in

  1651. the one

  1652. true Lord

  1653. and Savior

  1654. who gives

  1655. us that

  1656. support, who

  1657. will never

  1658. disown us,

  1659. never leave

  1660. those who

  1661. are his.

  1662. So hear

  1663. us, Lord,

  1664. as we commit

  1665. to you,

  1666. even the rest

  1667. of the service.

  1668. Help us to

  1669. sing words of

  1670. praise and

  1671. thanksgiving,

  1672. as we seek

  1673. to honour

  1674. you, even

  1675. towards the

  1676. end of this

  1677. service.

  1678. Hear us,

  1679. Lord, as we

  1680. commit these

  1681. things to

  1682. you now,

  1683. as we pray

  1684. your blessing

  1685. upon us,

  1686. in Jesus'

  1687. name.

  1688. Amen.

  1689. Well, let's

  1690. close in

  1691. Psalm 31.

  1692. Sing

  1693. Psalms,

  1694. page 37.

  1695. Psalm 31,

  1696. singing from

  1697. verse 19

  1698. down to

  1699. verse 24.

  1700. Five

  1701. stanzas.

  1702. Page 37,

  1703. verse 19,

  1704. Your goodness,

  1705. Lord, is very

  1706. great, prepared

  1707. for those who

  1708. fear your name.

  1709. You show your

  1710. goodness openly

  1711. to all who

  1712. your protection

  1713. claim.

  1714. 19 to 24,

  1715. to God's

  1716. praise.

  1717. Amen.

  1718. Amen.

  1719. Your goodness,

  1720. Lord, is very

  1721. great, prepared

  1722. for those who

  1723. fear your name.

  1724. you show your

  1725. goodness openly

  1726. to all who

  1727. your protection

  1728. claim.

  1729. Your presence

  1730. hides and

  1731. shelters them

  1732. from those

  1733. who plot

  1734. to take

  1735. their life.

  1736. And in

  1737. your tent

  1738. you keep

  1739. them safe

  1740. from evil

  1741. tongues

  1742. that stir

  1743. up

  1744. strife.

  1745. The Lord

  1746. be praised

  1747. because

  1748. he showed

  1749. the wonder

  1750. of

  1751. his love

  1752. to me

  1753. when

  1754. in

  1755. a

  1756. city

  1757. I

  1758. was

  1759. trapped

  1760. surrounded

  1761. by

  1762. the

  1763. enemy

  1764. in

  1765. my

  1766. alarm

  1767. I

  1768. rashly

  1769. said

  1770. that

  1771. I

  1772. was

  1773. hidden

  1774. from

  1775. your

  1776. eyes

  1777. but

  1778. when

  1779. I

  1780. to

  1781. you

  1782. for

  1783. help

  1784. grace

  1785. you

  1786. listen

  1787. to

  1788. my

  1789. cries

  1790. O

  1791. love

  1792. the

  1793. Lord

  1794. all

  1795. his

  1796. saints

  1797. the

  1798. faithful

  1799. will

  1800. be

  1801. kept

  1802. by

  1803. God

  1804. !

  1805. But

  1806. he

  1807. will

  1808. give

  1809. the

  1810. proud

  1811. their

  1812. due

  1813. be

  1814. strong

  1815. take

  1816. heart

  1817. open

  1818. the

  1819. Lord

  1820. and

  1821. now

  1822. may

  1823. grace

  1824. mercy

  1825. and

  1826. from

  1827. Father

  1828. Son

  1829. Spirit

  1830. Father

  1831. and

  1832. Holy Spirit

  1833. rest

  1834. upon

  1835. and

  1836. forever

  1837. Amen

  1838. Amen
