  11. afternoon at 230 p .m. We meet again on Wednesdays

  12. at 7 p .m. Right now, let's open our Bibles together

  13. and dive into today's sermon. I had to work in

  14. Lubbock this last week and so I was in the hotel

  15. room on Tuesday night. I walked into the hotel

  16. room and I clicked on the TV and a commercial

  17. came on the TV. And it was somebody talking about

  18. the Lord. This is good. It's good advertisement.

  19. It's good to see people on TV talking about the

  20. Lord, but at the end of the commercial He said

  21. if you're out there listening to me right now

  22. I want you to close your eyes and say this prayer

  23. and he began to Recite this prayer right here

  24. dear Lord Jesus. I know that I'm a sinner and

  25. I ask for your forgiveness I believe that you

  26. died for my sins and rose from the dead I turn

  27. for my sins invite you to come into my life I

  28. want to trust you and follow you as my Lord and

  29. Savior. I pray in Jesus name. Amen It's beautiful

  30. prayer. I think there's points of this prayer

  31. and we'll talk about it as we go through there

  32. that has basis in scripture you want to say this

  33. prayer i'm not going to sit there and tell you

  34. don't say this prayer the problem was what he

  35. said after that he said if you just said this

  36. prayer then you're saved from your sins you have

  37. salvation the blood of jesus is covering your

  38. sins and you have nothing to worry about and

  39. he said now i want you to call this number and

  40. somebody will be on the other end of the line

  41. and they'll counsel you and they'll help you,

  42. but God's gonna come into your life and change

  43. your life now at this point in time. You know,

  44. that's not the way I understand the scriptures.

  45. So I've got to ask myself, what do the scriptures

  46. say about this? We've just went through a series

  47. of sermons on the history of the church. And

  48. we've seen time and time again when some type

  49. of doctrine would come into the church and would

  50. become commonplace years down the line, but it

  51. was nothing more than a tradition of men. And

  52. so I have a responsibility to stand up here before

  53. you and tell you what the truth is. I've got

  54. a responsibility. learn what the truth is for

  55. myself and I may get passionate about some of

  56. the things we talk about and study about today

  57. I want you to know that if you've said this prayer

  58. and you felt like Jesus came into your heart

  59. and you've received salvation I'm not mad about

  60. that I'm not angry about that and I want you

  61. to know that I have a responsibility to speak

  62. the truth in love I don't believe this prayer

  63. saves you from your sins and I want to go through

  64. the scriptures and teach about that and show

  65. you about that but I'm not mad if you think that

  66. happened I don't want you to get the impression

  67. that I'm mad I want to speak the truth and love

  68. but part of speaking the truth and love is absolutely

  69. speaking the truth it's being honest with the

  70. scriptures it's examining the scriptures in the

  71. way that we talked about through the course of

  72. this last series that we just studied so I want

  73. to take an examination of this so -called sinners

  74. prayer this morning because I want you to know

  75. There are thousands and thousands of people that

  76. see that commercial and I don't know how many

  77. respond to it. But I know that throughout the

  78. course of the last 80 years, there have been

  79. thousands and thousands of people that have said

  80. that prayer and honestly and truthfully believe

  81. that Jesus came into the heart and cleansed them

  82. from their sins. And so I wanna examine, is that

  83. what is happening? Or what does the Bible teach

  84. us in regard to that? In 1 John chapter 4 and

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  85. verse number 1, we're admonished, beloved. Do

  86. not believe every spirit, but try the spirits,

  87. whether they are of God because many false prophets

  88. are come or gone out into the world, many false

  89. prophets. The Bible warns or Paul warns elders

  90. in the church he says that you need to take heed

  91. to yourselves in the flock because they're going

  92. to be grievous wolves that come out from among

  93. you not spraying the flock they're going to be

  94. false teachers and he said your job as members

  95. of the body of Christ is to try the spirits don't

  96. believe everything that you hear I remember Talking

  97. to kids about, don't believe everything you read

  98. on the internet. Don't believe that. Well, don't

  99. believe everything you hear from people. Don't

  100. believe everything you see on TV. Don't believe

  101. everything that you read or see in a book. Try

  102. those spirits and what are we trying them against?

  103. We're trying them against the Word of God. We're

  104. seeing if they measure up to the truth of the

  105. Word of God. What does the Bible say? And let's,

  106. again, like we talked about all through that

  107. series, let's just go back and do what the Bible

  108. says. Let's not make up something new. Let's

  109. not try to do something different. Let's just

  110. do what the Bible says to do. And if the Bible

  111. says that a prayer saves your sins, then that's

  112. what's true. And if the Bible says there's something

  113. else that saves you from your sins, then that's

  114. what's true. It doesn't matter what anybody else,

  115. what I myself have said, believed, or taught,

  116. or what you've said, believed, or taught, it

  117. does not matter. What matters is what the scriptures

  118. say. So your job and my job this morning is to

  119. try this spirit. The spirit has been teaching

  120. or the spirit of praying and receiving Jesus

  121. into your heart is what's being taught. Let's

  122. try that. Let's examine that this morning. First

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  123. Thessalonians chapter 5 and verse 19. It says,

  124. do not quench the spirit, do not despise prophecies,

  125. test all things, hold fast what is good, abstain

  126. from every form of evil. That's a pretty simple

  127. prescription for how to approach things that

  128. we need to understand, things that pertain to

  129. our salvation. Don't quench the Spirit. Don't

  130. go against what the Spirit has said. What did

  131. we learn through this last series? The Spirit

  132. revealed things to the apostles. The apostles

  133. wrote those things down. Jesus promised that

  134. Spirit was going to come. He said, the Spirit

  135. of life is going to put you in remembrance of

  136. all these things. The Spirit of life came and

  137. the apostles remembered. They were put in perfect

  138. remembrance and they wrote things down so that

  139. thousands of years later, you and I can read

  140. those things and understand those things. If

  141. something goes against those things that are

  142. written, if something is contrary to what's written

  143. in the scriptures, it is quenching the Spirit.

  144. It's quenching the spirit. If something was prophesied

  145. and then misapplied and people misapply a prophecy

  146. today, they're despising prophecies. That's not

  147. right. We're told not to do that. Don't quench

  148. the spirit. Don't despise prophecies. Now let's

  149. test all things. And so that's what we're going

  150. to do for a little bit. I believe there's biblical

  151. precedents for looking at these doctrines and

  152. testing them and seeing if they hold up. Finally

  153. in Ephesians chapter 4 and verse number 14, that

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  154. we should no longer be children, tossed to and

  155. fro and carried with every wind of doctrine by

  156. the trickery of men and the cunning craftiness

  157. of deceitful plotting, but speaking the truth

  158. in love may grow up in all things into him who

  159. is the head, Christ. So we want to do our very

  160. best to speak the truth in love this morning

  161. about this doctrine. And we don't want to get

  162. tossed to and fro. We want to be steadfast, unmovable,

  163. always abounding in the work of the Lord. That's

  164. our goal. The only way to do that is to look

  165. to the scriptures. The scriptures are unchangeable.

  166. They keep us steadfast. They keep us true. They

  167. keep us holy. And let's not be tossed to and

  168. fro. So with that being said, let's begin to

  169. look at another verse here and set the stage

  170. for how we examine all... all different kinds

  171. of doctrines. There's really two things that

  172. set forth. And we talked about this again over

  173. the course of this series. It's probably why

  174. all these things are on my mind. But in Matthew

    Matthew 21 chapter mention

  175. chapter 21 and verse 23, they begin to question

  176. Jesus. Jesus has given them these teachings and

  177. they come to him in the second part of verse

  178. number 23 there and they say, by what authority?

  179. Are you doing these things and who gave you this

  180. authority? But Jesus answered and said to them

  181. I also will ask you one thing which if you tell

  182. me I likewise will tell you by what authority

  183. I do these things. The baptism of John where

  184. was it from? From heaven or from men? You know

  185. the story goes on and they don't have a good

  186. answer and they choose not to answer. But really

  187. the meat of the matter here in this verse is

  188. that Jesus has given you and I the blueprint.

  189. He's given them the blueprint. Who gave Jesus

  190. the authority? Jesus was given the authority

  191. from heaven. Who gave them the authority for

  192. what they were teaching and speaking out against

  193. it was the traditions of men He's making a point

  194. to them that the authority of heaven the words

  195. of God the words of Christ have weight and When

  196. we are speaking and operating under the premise

  197. of those things We have the authority to speak

  198. the truth in love every one of you in here have

  199. the authority to speak the truth in love Long

  200. as you're abiding by the scriptures, but when

  201. you make a decision to go beyond what is written

  202. and you make a decision to make up your own doctrine

  203. or follow your own tradition that is contrary

  204. to the scriptures, then you're operating under

  205. the authority of men. And men have no authority.

  206. Men have no authority to introduce new doctrines

  207. into the church. And so what is this prayer?

  208. Is it the authority of men or is it the authority

  209. of God? Is it of heaven? or is it of men? That's

  210. what we want to look at for the remainder of

  211. our time together this morning. So my first question

  212. is can we find this prayer in scripture? I'll

  213. put it back up on the board there. We have a

  214. beautiful amount of technology today that allows

  215. us to search the scriptures. More easily than

  216. any any time before and and it's a wonderful

  217. thing, you know You can pull up eSword on your

  218. phone You can type in a few words and and you

  219. can see where they appear in in the Bible You

  220. don't have to get out that old Strong's and go

  221. through it page by page anymore. Now. That's

  222. good exercise I encourage you to do that sometimes

  223. but the wonderful thing is I can type these words

  224. into that search Engine and I can see if they

  225. appear in the Bible and I want you to know I've

  226. done that in every different version. Let me

  227. see how many versions I had to write it down

  228. here. 64 versions, English versions of Bible

  229. are on Bible Gateway. I use that resource a lot.

  230. 64 English versions of the Bible are on Bible

  231. Gateway, and that's not in a single one of them.

  232. Typed out like that. Now this man stood on his

  233. TV and he said, if you will say this, you will

  234. be saved. That's not in there. That's just the

  235. truth. I'm trying to speak the truth in love.

  236. I'm not trying to be mean. It's not there. You

  237. can't find it. There's nowhere it says this prayer

  238. will save you. You can find the Lord's Prayer.

  239. You can type the words of the Lord's Prayer.

  240. Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. You

  241. can find that. That prayer is there. That prayer

  242. is a good resource to teach us how to pray. The

  243. apostle said we need to know how to pray. Teach

  244. us how to pray. He didn't teach them that prayer.

  245. He taught him a different prayer. And the words

  246. of that prayer we can find in scriptures. This

  247. prayer we cannot find in scriptures. However,

  248. as I mentioned, there are biblical principles

  249. scattered all through this prayer. Biblical things

  250. pulled out, and let's just be honest with how

  251. we deal with it. Because if I'm gonna stand up

  252. here and preach you the plan of salvation as

  253. I understand it, I'm gonna say you need to hear,

  254. believe, repent. Confess and be baptized how

  255. many times have you heard that I? Can't turn

  256. to one scripture in in the Bible and and show

  257. you all those things get really close on a couple

  258. But I can't turn to one scripture where we're

  259. piecing that together and so maybe it is that

  260. these individuals have Believed that they've

  261. pieced this together through throughout the scriptures

  262. and so where where have they done that you know

  263. in Luke chapter 18 of verse number 13 We'll read

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  264. all these verses in just a minute, but we can

  265. see this concept of somebody standing before

  266. God and saying they're a sinner and that they

  267. need mercy, that they need forgiveness. We can

  268. see that concept. We can see someone making this

  269. statement or we know that this is a very true

  270. statement, that Jesus died for our sins and rose

  271. from the grave. Our whole faith is built on that,

  272. brothers and sisters. Our whole foundation of

  273. faith is built on that principle. And so you

  274. can find that in the scriptures. You can see

  275. where we're commanded to turn from our sins.

  276. That's a very appropriate thing that has to happen

  277. in order for salvation to occur. To say that

  278. in a prayer, to ask God to help you for that,

  279. there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Invite

  280. Jesus into our heart. The Bible talks about Jesus

  281. coming in and dwelling with us, the Spirit dwelling

  282. with us. We invite those things. We want those

  283. things to occur, that we trust and follow Jesus

  284. and obey Him as our Lord and Savior. that is

  285. a very biblical concept. If you're not following

  286. and trusting in the Lord, what are you trying

  287. to do in your Christianity and your Christian

  288. faith? And then praying in the name of Jesus

  289. is obviously a biblical thing as well. So all

  290. these things are based on biblical principles

  291. and you could almost just go through those things

  292. just like you and I would go through the list

  293. of the plan of salvation. And so what if somebody

  294. does that with you and you encounter that and

  295. they're going to scriptures? Does that make this

  296. true? Does that make this right? You know, we've

  297. got a responsibility to look at a concept and

  298. apply good basis of how we interpret and how

  299. we look at scriptures. And I want you to know,

  300. and we've talked about this many times, context

  301. is the king of all those things when we're trying

  302. to figure out what a scripture's talking about.

  303. Where does it apply? The context matters. Who's

  304. speaking matters. Who they're speaking to matters.

  305. Those things are important when we're trying

  306. to interpret the scriptures. So I want to take

  307. each one of these verses and I want to look at

  308. them for just a second because these are verses

  309. that I have encountered when speaking with people

  310. about this prayer and I want to treat them honestly

  311. and I want to say what do they mean? How do they

  312. apply? Can we apply them to a prayer? Can we

  313. put these concepts together in a prayer? Say

  314. that prayer and be saved? Or these just good

  315. biblical principles that we need to understand

  316. and we need to pray about but that prayer doesn't

  317. necessarily save our soul. First one, Luke chapter

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  318. 18 and verse number 13. Speaking of this tax

  319. collector, it says the tax collector standing

  320. afar off would not so much as raise his eyes

  321. to heaven, but beat upon his breast saying, God

  322. be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you this man

  323. went down to his house justified rather than

  324. the other for everyone who exalts himself will

  325. be humbled and he who humbles himself will be

  326. exalted. This is a pretty Good scripture to support

  327. this concept, isn't it? Here we have a man that

  328. was obviously a sinner. You know what the tax

  329. collectors did? They stole money from people.

  330. Basically, they went around stealing money. They

  331. skimmed off the top. And so when somebody would

  332. pay their taxes, they would skim a little bit.

  333. They would keep a little money for themselves.

  334. That's immoral. That's sin. We've got a sinner.

  335. So this tax collector here is a sinner. He's

  336. standing there with a publican, a man who was,

  337. he's standing there with the Pharisee who was

  338. a man of the law, a man who understood the law,

  339. a man who followed God supposedly. Now he was

  340. following his traditions more than he was following

  341. God, but this Pharisee was a very prideful man.

  342. And he said, you know, I'm glad I'm not like

  343. this publican or this tax collector. I'm glad

  344. I'm not a sinner like him. I'm fasting, I'm praying,

  345. I'm giving to the poor. I'm doing all these wonderful

  346. things. And so what's the concept being taught

  347. here? The concept is that of pride and humility.

  348. It's not about a prayer saving your soul. It's

  349. about a situation where one man was prideful

  350. and another was humble. And we're being taught

  351. about humility. Now it says this man went down

  352. to his house justified rather than the other.

  353. This man was justified. Here's what we don't

  354. know. We don't know. what happened in the background

  355. of these men's lives. And furthermore, what we

  356. do know is that this instance occurred under

  357. a different covenant than the New Testament covenant.

  358. So here we're having two men seeing this situation

  359. play out in the Old Testament covenant or under

  360. the law of Moses. There's no command for them

  361. to be baptized under the law of Moses. There's

  362. no command for them to say a prayer for salvation

  363. under the law of Moses. How were they saved under

  364. the law of Moses? Well, number one, you belong

  365. to the household of Israel. And number two, year

  366. after year, you perform those sacrifices that

  367. would roll your sins back time after time after

  368. time. This has nothing to do with salvation.

  369. This scenario, the way this plays out has nothing

  370. to do with salvation. It doesn't teach a New

  371. Testament concept of salvation in the form of

  372. prayer. What it does teach is the principle of

  373. you should be humble. Don't be prideful. Don't

  374. be built up with pride. You're not going to be

  375. justified in the eyes of God. The only way you

  376. can be justified in the eyes of God is to humble

  377. yourself, realize you've got a ton of sin in

  378. your life, and obey and follow God. That's the

  379. concept and principle that's being taught. here.

  380. So while the line is very appropriate in a prayer

  381. that you love the Lord and you're a sinner and

  382. you know you're a sinner and you want to ask

  383. for forgiveness, while that's very appropriate

  384. for the Christian, we're not shown anywhere that

  385. that saves somebody that hasn't come to Christ.

  386. Let's look at our next verse in first Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  387. chapter 15 and verse number three for I delivered

  388. to you first of all that which I also received

  389. that Christ died for our sins according to the

  390. scriptures and That he was buried and that he

  391. rose again the third day According to the scriptures

  392. first Corinthians chapter 15 if we back up a

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  393. couple verses Paul's going to say Brethren, I

  394. want to declare unto you the gospel And he's

  395. declaring unto them the death, the burial, and

  396. the resurrection of Jesus. And we know the gospel

  397. is what saves us. And to incorporate that into

  398. a prayer is a wonderful and marvelous thing.

  399. But there's nowhere in this passage, in the context

  400. of this passage, that says if we say these words,

  401. that we're going to automatically be saved from

  402. our sins. In fact, he paints the picture that

  403. we are saved by this gospel. We are saved by

  404. the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

  405. That's the principle that he's teaching us there.

  406. That if this didn't happen, if Jesus didn't die,

  407. if Jesus wasn't buried, if Jesus didn't rise

  408. from the grave, we would not have salvation.

  409. And so that's what he's teaching and showing

  410. us. And if you want to pray that in your prayers,

  411. it's a wonderful thing to pray, God be thanked.

  412. That is a wonderful thing to be thankful for

  413. and to pray about. But just saying the word simply,

  414. we get no indication from this scripture that

  415. that saves us in any way, shape or form. Acts

  416. chapter three in verse 19, repent therefore and

  417. be converted that your sins may be blotted out

  418. so that the time of refreshing may come from

  419. the presence. of the Lord. Once again, we are

  420. shown it is very clear that we must turn from

  421. our sins. In part of that prayer, I turn from

  422. my sins. So important. You must turn from your

  423. sins. You cannot, the Bible says, can we continue

  424. in sin that grace may abound? God forbid. Certainly

  425. not. We cannot continue in our sins. We have

  426. to commit that we're going to change, that we're

  427. going to turn from our sins. And for you to do

  428. that, before salvation is so important. It's

  429. so important. But just the concept of saying

  430. those words, we're not shown here that that saves

  431. us. We're not shown that that allows us to obtain

  432. salvation. Invite you to come into my life. That's

  433. part of that prayer that's spoken. We invite

  434. Jesus to come into our life. Certainly we want

  435. Jesus in our life. Revelation chapter three and

  436. verse 20, Jesus himself says, behold, I stand

  437. at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice

  438. and opens the door, I will come into him and

  439. dine with him and he with me." Beautiful scripture.

  440. Beautiful scripture of Jesus telling people that

  441. if you'll just let me in. We sing songs about

  442. that, don't we? Just let me into your life. That's

  443. all we need from Jesus. We want him to come in

  444. to our life. And so we read that verse and...

  445. And I'll be honest, that verse right there is

  446. pretty convincing when you just read it there

  447. by itself. What's going on in the book of Revelation

  448. here? Who's this being written to? And that's

  449. where context begins to play a major and important

  450. role when we're treating the scriptures fairly.

  451. We have to use that context and understand that

  452. context. Jesus is writing to a church, a church.

  453. He's not writing to just people out in the world

  454. and saying hey anybody if you'll just open the

  455. door I'll come in He's he's writing to the church

  456. and he's begging and pleading with the church

  457. to let him in that the church needs to let him

  458. in and let him have his way. He's begging for

  459. them to obey him and accept his way and his path

  460. and not try to vary that at all. And so when

  461. we understand that, we understand a very different

  462. concept. And prayer is very different for the

  463. Christian than it is for the non -Christian.

  464. As we move along in Acts chapter 2 and verse

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  465. number 36, therefore let all the house of Israel

  466. know assuredly that God has made this same Jesus

  467. whom you crucified both Lord and Christ. The

  468. next line in that prayer, I want to trust and

  469. follow you as my Lord and Savior. Amen. Again,

  470. a wonderful thing to pray, a wonderful thing

  471. to say. But just saying the words doesn't mean

  472. that he washes us and cleans us from our sins.

  473. And then in John chapter 16 and verse 23, they

    John 16 chapter mention

  474. pray in the name of Jesus. Obviously, I'm a big...

  475. proponent of that I think we ought to always

  476. pray in the name of Jesus and John 16 23 shows

  477. that and in the day in that day you ask me nothing

  478. most assuredly I say to you whatever you ask

  479. the father in my name he will give you I believe

  480. that our prayers should be directed to the Heavenly

  481. Father in the name of Jesus and I think that's

  482. appropriate I don't think that prayers closed

  483. in an appropriate fashion so they're obviously

  484. asking in the name of Jesus I have no problem

  485. with that I have no no issue with that at all

  486. Matthew chapter 6 and 9 shows us as the people

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  487. said teach as the Apostle said teach us to pray

  488. show us how to pray Jesus said after this manner

  489. you should pray our father in heaven Hallowed

  490. be thy name and so he teaches us to pray in the

  491. name of the father To and then this verse teaches

  492. us to pray in his name I want to wrap this out

  493. with with this verse because I encountered this

  494. one quite often when visiting with someone about

  495. the sinner's prayer James chapter 5 and verse

    James 5 chapter mention

  496. 15 and the prayer of faith will save the sick

  497. and the Lord will raise him up and if he has

  498. committed sins he will be forgiven. You know

  499. that's probably the most compelling verse if

  500. we just pull it out of the context there and

  501. look at it because you can say all right I've

  502. said all these things in this prayer and they're

  503. biblical things. They're things I need to ask

  504. for. I know I'm a sinner. I know I need to be

  505. forgiven. I know I need Jesus in my life. I know

  506. he needs to come into my life for me to live

  507. and operate as I should. I've prayed that in

  508. the name of Jesus and James chapter 5 and verse

    James 5 chapter mention

  509. 15 says the prayer of faith will save the sick

  510. and if he's committed sins he'll be forgiven

  511. and that is extremely compelling until you look

  512. at who's the book of James written to? James

  513. writes in James chapter 1 and verse 1, to the

    James 1 chapter mention

  514. 12 tribes scattered abroad. And so he's writing

  515. to the 12 tribes and you scratch your head and

  516. you say, is this the 12 tribes of Israel? Who's

  517. he writing to? Well, the concept is in Romans

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  518. chapter 11 that we would all be grafted in to

  519. the nation of Israel. He said they're not all

  520. Israel who are of Israel, but then he talks about

  521. the concept of being grafted in. And the concept

  522. of being grafted, you know a lot of people that

  523. work in orchards perform this concept of grafting

  524. and The example used in Romans is that you've

  525. got this wild olive tree over here, and you've

  526. got this good olive tree, this cultivated olive

  527. tree. And he said, we take the branch off this

  528. wild olive tree, and we cut off the branch, and

  529. we bring it over here to this cultivated olive

  530. tree that's good, and that's pure, and that's

  531. right, and we graft it in. So we notch out a

  532. little bit out of this olive tree here that's

  533. good, and we put this wild olive tree into that

  534. branch. It becomes part of That tree it becomes

  535. part of that nation It becomes part of the saved

  536. and so James in his writing in James chapter

    James 1 chapter mention

  537. 1 and verse 1 is saying I'm writing this to the

  538. saved I'm writing this to the 12 tribes scattered

  539. abroad those that are saved those that are already

  540. have already attained salvation This is his advice

  541. to them there when you're down and when you need

  542. help and when you're sick pray You need to pray

  543. and when you are when you have salvation when

  544. you're part of the saved he says that prayer

  545. will Forgive your sins then and so we've got

  546. this difference between someone who is an alien

  547. sinner never known Jesus Setting in front of

  548. the TV in their hotel room in Lubbock, Texas

  549. And and here's that prayer and they've never

  550. known Jesus and they hear that and they say that

  551. prayer will that prayer save them and the answer

  552. is no but you've got somebody that's obeyed the

  553. gospel that's let Jesus save them in his way

  554. through the death, burial, the resurrection of

  555. Jesus through obedience to that form of doctrine.

  556. And they're sitting in front of the same TV and

  557. they say, Lord, I've sinned tonight and I need

  558. you to forgive me. The Lord is faithful and just

  559. to forgive those sins in that scenario. That's

  560. the power of prayer for the Christian versus

  561. the non -Christian. And so we need to understand

  562. that difference and that's shown very clearly

  563. through here in the book of James that he is

  564. teaching this concept to those that are already

  565. saved. The next thing that we want to examine

  566. is the concept of calling on the name of the

  567. Lord. Because that's referenced many times and

  568. in fact, I didn't put it on there, but right

  569. above that graphic on this website. it had that

  570. verse that whoever calls on the name of the Lord

  571. will be saved and so that's the concept that

  572. they believe they're following and I believe

  573. for the most part people with honest hearts are

  574. following that so let's talk about calling on

  575. the name of the Lord for just a moment. Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  576. chapter 2 in verse number 21 it shall come to

  577. pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord

  578. shall be saved. This is a quotation from the

  579. book of Joel. Joel had prophesied that there

  580. would come a day when whoever called on the name

  581. of the Lord would be saved. The scriptures repeat

  582. in Romans chapter 10 and verse number 13, for

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  583. whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be

  584. saved. And so the question becomes, how do we

  585. call on the name of the Lord? Well, in my insufficient

  586. logical mind, it seems reasonable to me that

  587. we would call the name of the Lord in prayer.

  588. Doesn't it seem reasonable to you that we would

  589. call to the name of the Lord in prayer? You know,

  590. I can see how people believe that. I can see

  591. how people understand that. But that's my flawed,

  592. logical mind. And if I'm honest with the scriptures

  593. and I begin to dig into scriptures and say, how

  594. do I call on the name of the Lord? I begin to

  595. see a different picture. The Bible actually tells

  596. us quite clearly. how we call on the name of

  597. the Lord. We don't have to wonder about that.

  598. We don't have to make it up in our mind. It doesn't

  599. have to be some some man -made definition of

  600. calling on the name of the Lord. The Bible is

  601. going to paint the picture and it's going to

  602. show us how to do that. And in order to do that

  603. and in order to walk through these other concepts

  604. that we've talked about already this morning,

  605. I want to turn to the book of Acts chapter 9

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  606. and I want to go through a story, a retelling

  607. of the conversion of Saul of Tarsus and so we're

  608. gonna be in Acts chapter 9 and Acts chapter 22

Acts 9 chapter mention Acts 22 chapter mention

  609. and we're gonna look at this conversion and we're

  610. gonna see a picture of maybe a man that thought

  611. this prayer concept would work. and how he's

  612. told how to call on the name of the Lord and

  613. how to obtain salvation. Because at the end of

  614. the day that's all we want to know. I want you

  615. to be saved and go to heaven. I want to be saved

  616. and go to heaven. I want everybody in this town

  617. to be saved and go to heaven and understand the

  618. right process to follow so that they can be saved

  619. and go to heaven. And the Bible paints the picture

  620. for us. I'm not making this stuff up. The Bible

  621. is painting the picture for us and so I'm going

  622. to let it do that for us. Acts chapter 9 beginning

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  623. in verse number 3. This is speaking of Saul.

  624. It says as he journeyed he came near Damascus

  625. and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven.

  626. Then he fell to the ground and heard a voice

  627. saying to him, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting

  628. me? And he said, who are you, Lord? Then the

  629. Lord said, I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.

  630. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.

  631. So he, trembling and astonished, said, Lord,

  632. what would or what do you want me to do? Then

  633. the Lord said to him, arise and go into the city.

  634. and you will be told what you must do. And the

  635. men who journeyed with him stood speechless,

  636. hearing a voice but seeing no one. Then Saul

  637. arose from the ground, and when his eyes were

  638. opened, he saw no one, but they led him by the

  639. hand and brought him into Damascus. And he was

  640. three days without sight, and neither ate nor

  641. drank. Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus

  642. named Ananias. And to him the Lord said in a

  643. vision, Ananias, and he said, here I am Lord.

  644. So the Lord said to him, arise and go to the

  645. street called Strait and inquire at the house

  646. of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus. For behold,

  647. he is praying. And in a vision, he has seen a

  648. man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand

  649. on him. So here we have the story of Saul, and

  650. he encounters Jesus on the road to Damascus.

  651. He's struck blind. He wants to know what the

  652. Lord wants him to do. He's confessing the name

  653. of the Lord. And he said, go to the city, and

  654. it'll be told there what you must do. So he goes

  655. to the city he's blind it says for three days

  656. He did not eat or drink And it also says that

  657. during that period of time he was praying So

  658. here's a man that's that's doing these things

  659. as logically one might do God wants Ananias to

  660. go to him to preach to him to heal him so that

  661. he can receive his sight again I want to go now

  662. to Acts chapter 22 This is the same account,

    Acts 22 chapter mention

  663. but it's Paul telling it from his perspective

  664. And so he's recounting it to a different group

  665. of people about what what was happening in that

  666. situation So now Paul is speaking, he says, then

  667. a certain Ananias, a devout man, according to

  668. the law, having a good testimony with all the

  669. Jews who dwelt there, came to me and he stood

  670. and said to me, Brother Saul, receive your sight.

  671. And at that same hour, I looked up at him. So

  672. I want to recount what's happened to Paul or

  673. Saul in this story thus far. Number one, he has

  674. heard the voice of Jesus. He's heard the voice

  675. of Jesus. Acts chapter nine and verse number

  676. four tells us that, that he heard Jesus say words

  677. to him. He has believed. called Jesus Lord. In

  678. Acts chapter 9 verses 5 and 6 he refers to him

    Acts 9:5

  679. as Lord. First he says who are you Lord? Then

  680. Jesus answered him and says I'm Jesus whom you

  681. persecuted and then he says Lord what would you

  682. have me to do? And so he knows whatever's happening

  683. here must be from the power of the Lord on high.

  684. Jesus reveals himself to him and now he says

  685. what do you want me to do? I believe that you

  686. tell me what I need to do and I'll go and do

  687. it. He asked, what do I need to do? Acts chapter

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  688. 9 and verse 6 again. I honestly want to know,

  689. Saul says, I honestly want to know what do I

  690. need to do? And he's told to go into the city.

  691. So he obeys a command. He's not just told what

  692. to do, but he's listening now. I will do what

  693. you want me to do I'll obey whatever command

  694. you give me and and I have no doubt if Jesus

  695. would have told Saul to go clear across the country

  696. to some way foreign land He would have done just

  697. that he would have made sure and I have no doubt

  698. if Jesus would have told Paul There's a pool

  699. of water right there. You need to be baptized

  700. right now He would have done that right then

  701. and if he would have told Saul that hey go into

  702. the city and say this prayer That's what he would

  703. have done. He would have obeyed whatever. But

  704. the command at that point was you need to go

  705. to the city. He said, okay, I'll go. Three days

  706. he fasts once he gets there. Three whole days

  707. he fasts. He does not eat. He does not drink

  708. for three days. He is focused on knowing I'm

  709. a sinner, knowing I've done something wrong,

  710. knowing I need to change, worried about what

  711. to do and how many more days he would have went,

  712. I don't know. But luckily, God goes ahead and

  713. sends Ananias to him. During that period of time,

  714. he's praying. I've heard people say he prayed

  715. continually. I don't know if he prayed continually

  716. during that time or not, but I know he's praying.

  717. And here's another caveat in the whole story.

  718. God knows he's praying. I'll be honest, I've

  719. stood up and taught against this sinner's prayer

  720. before and said, God does not ever hear a sinner

  721. pray a word. I don't believe that's true. The

  722. scriptures say when a man was healed and received

  723. his sight one time, when people ask him who was

  724. Jesus and how did Jesus do that, he said, you

  725. know, we know that God doesn't hear sinners,

  726. but if a man is a follower of his, him he heareth.

  727. So we know that Jesus couldn't have performed

  728. this miracle if he was a sinner. And so I've

  729. used that scripture and I've said, we know God

  730. never hears a word that a sinner says. I don't

  731. think that's true because God knew Paul was praying

  732. or Saul was praying. Now, was he answering everything

  733. Saul was putting down? No, it doesn't look like

  734. it, but he knew he was praying. He knew he wanted

  735. help, and so sometimes a sinner can cry out for

  736. help and God may put help in their path. Sometimes

  737. a sinner can cry out that they need somebody

  738. in their life and God may put somebody in their

  739. path, but Paul's here praying, very intently

  740. praying and fasting, and he's still... evidently

  741. has sin in his life. And then at the end of this,

  742. where we just laughed off, he's gonna receive

  743. a miraculous healing, not of his sin, but of

  744. his eyesight. So he's struck blind and now Ananias

  745. comes in and says, brother Saul, receive your

  746. sight. And immediately his eyes are open and

  747. he can see again. And so I want you to think

  748. about this man and what he's been through and

  749. what the process is. And again, my week, Logic

  750. of my mind, if we stopped right there, I might

  751. look at that story and I might say, that's gotta

  752. be a saved individual. He's got to be saved.

  753. He's heard the voice of Jesus. He believes Jesus

  754. is Lord. He has asked and inquired what he needed

  755. to do, been told what he needed to do, obeyed

  756. what he had been told to do up until that point.

  757. He's fasted, he's prayed, and he's received a

  758. miraculous healing of his body and of his physical

  759. elements. He must be saved. And yet we read in

  760. Acts 22 and 16, and now why are you waiting?

  761. arise and be baptized and wash away your sins

  762. now listen calling on the name of the Lord how

  763. was he supposed to call on the name of the Lord

  764. well he was supposed to call on the name of the

  765. Lord when he was baptized that's how he called

  766. on the name of the Lord not through a prayer

  767. now again my weak and logical mind I have a trouble

  768. connecting the dots. I have trouble saying, well

  769. this looks like calling on the name of the Lord

  770. and this doesn't. I don't have to rely on my

  771. weak and logical mind. I can rely on what the

  772. scripture says and it says that this man who

  773. believed, who fasted, who prayed, who obeyed,

  774. who had a miracle worked on him, the Bible says

  775. he still had his sins and the thing that he needed

  776. to do was arise and be baptized and wash those

  777. sins away. because that was the act of calling

  778. on the name of the Lord. You see, we don't have

  779. to wonder, and we don't have to doubt, and we

  780. don't have to piece all those things together.

  781. We just have to read what the scriptures tell

  782. us, accept what the scriptures tell us, and believe

  783. that I can be saved just like He was saved. He

  784. was not saved by prayer. He was not saved by

  785. fasting. He was not saved by a miracle. He was

  786. saved when He went down into a watery grave of

  787. baptism. Had his sins washed away and was risen

  788. to walk in newness of life. That's what happened

  789. to Saul of Tarsus That's the process. That's

  790. the model. That's what the scriptures show us

  791. The second thing that I want to look at this

  792. briefly as we wrap this up is the other part

  793. of that equation. So number one, we've seen this

  794. sinner's prayer is not from heaven. We can't

  795. find it in the scriptures. We can't find it in

  796. the apostle's doctrine. We can find segments

  797. of it, but they're taken out of context. We're

  798. never told that a prayer saves a sinner. We're

  799. told that prayer can forgive sins of a Christian,

  800. but we're never told that a prayer washes away

  801. sins in the same form that baptism washes away

  802. sins. So the second question is, was this developed

  803. by men then? If it didn't come from heaven, was

  804. it developed by men? Is it a tradition of men?

  805. Can we see in the history of time this developed

  806. after the conclusion of the New Testament was

  807. written? And the answer to that question is yes.

  808. We see people begin to preach and talk about

  809. this inward renewal in the 1700s and emphasize

  810. an inward renewal. And I believe an inward renewal

  811. is very important. I believe that we need to

  812. change our hearts. and change our ways. I don't

  813. believe that if you're baptized and never repent

  814. and never change that salvation occurs. I don't

  815. believe baptism is that powerful. I believe a

  816. change has to happen, a commitment to change

  817. and inward renewal and wanting to know what Jesus

  818. says, letting Jesus dwell in you through the

  819. word, obeying the word and having a desire for

  820. that. I think all that's important. But this

  821. overemphasis on this led to this concept of the

  822. mourner's bench in 1801 and there was a specific

  823. revival that was held and this mourner's bench

  824. was held and they invited the crowd to come up

  825. and just kneel down on this mourner's bench and

  826. start praying. And originally they had to pray

  827. for a long, long time. They had to pray and really

  828. sweat and really get into that prayer and beg

  829. and beg and beg and maybe after a while of intense

  830. and powerful prayer and all this time, maybe

  831. then Jesus will forgive you. And that was that

  832. initial concept. That's where this whole idea

  833. got started. Later... evolved into just a general

  834. altar call that if you want to be saved come

  835. up here to the front and people will pray for

  836. you and be saved and we I'll be honest have some

  837. of that tradition in the church in that we have

  838. the invitation song we'll sing a little bit that's

  839. a tradition of men we we can have that we don't

  840. have to have that that's not something that's

  841. necessarily prescribed we give people an opportunity

  842. to respond don't think there's anything wrong

  843. with giving people an opportunity to respond

  844. But their idea was you come, you get down on

  845. your knees, and you start praying again, and

  846. you pray hard, and you pray long, and you pray,

  847. and you pray, and you pray, and hopefully, at

  848. the end of that prayer, he's gonna forgive you.

  849. And then we see in the late 1940s and 1950s,

  850. as there was this rise of... Crusades not not

  851. crusades in the sense of war but but evangelistic

  852. Crusades going on and we get to see this on the

  853. TV and now we really need something That people

  854. can see on the TV and say and be saved. We really

  855. need something like that And so what happened

  856. you start to see this scripted sinners prayer

  857. that prayer that I put up there that really short

  858. really precise really You know Click and cover

  859. some things and make sure that you receive Jesus

  860. into your heart and are saved. None of that's

  861. in the Bible. None of that's in the Bible. And

  862. again, I want to speak the truth in love to you.

  863. You may have done that. You may have said that

  864. prayer. You may have felt saved for years because

  865. of that prayer. Because you know what happens?

  866. When somebody says that prayer, when they're

  867. feeling the weight of sin, and they're feeling

  868. the burden of sin, and they get out on their

  869. knees and they say that prayer, They're going

  870. to feel something different. They're going to

  871. feel a burden lifted. You're going to feel saved.

  872. But feeling saved doesn't make you saved. And

  873. so I want to close with just a couple scriptures

  874. where people said, what do we do? And the Bible

  875. specifically told them what to do. That's all

  876. I know to believe, brothers and sisters. That's

  877. all I know to do. We can break down scripture

  878. after scripture, verse after verse, but at the

  879. end of the day, when somebody said, what do I

  880. need to do? An apostle told them what they needed

  881. to be do. That's what I want to do. That's what

  882. I want to do I just want to follow the pattern

  883. acts chapter 2 and verse number 37 now when they

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  884. heard this they were cut to the heart and Said

  885. to Peter and the rest of the Apostles men and

  886. brethren. What shall we do? Perfect time for

  887. him to say recite this prayer What you have to

  888. do recite this prayer and you'll be saved. There's

  889. a perfect opportunity Peter has all knowledge.

  890. He's been endowed by the Holy Spirit with a perfect

  891. remembrance of everything Jesus has said and

  892. done. Perfect opportunity, but that's not what

  893. he does. He says instead, repent, let every one

  894. of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ

  895. for the remission of your sins and you'll receive

  896. the gift of the Holy Ghost. Don't quench the

  897. Spirit. Don't quench the Spirit by saying you

  898. receive the Spirit through a prayer. You don't

  899. receive the Spirit through a prayer. You receive

  900. the Spirit when you repent and are baptized.

  901. That's when you receive the Spirit. Don't quench

  902. it. Don't quench the spirit. The second verse

  903. I want to read is Acts 16 and verse 30. He brought

  904. him out and said, "'Sirs, what must I do to be

  905. saved?' A very clear question. I want to be saved.

  906. I need to know what to do. This man was in a

  907. little bit different situation than those in

  908. Acts 2. In Acts 2, Peter had already preached

  909. to him. In Acts 2, Peter had already told him

  910. who Jesus was. In Acts 2, Peter had already convicted

  911. him of their sins. This man didn't know Jesus,

  912. never heard of Jesus, didn't know anything about

  913. Jesus. And so he said, what must I do to be saved?"

  914. And they said, you need to believe on the name

  915. of the Lord Jesus and you'll be saved. So what

  916. did they do? They took him and spoke the word

  917. of the Lord to him and to all that were in his

  918. house. He needed a base knowledge of who Jesus

  919. was and that Jesus could take away his sins.

  920. So he needed to believe first. He didn't know

  921. how to believe. They taught him how to believe.

  922. And when he believed, what happened? What was

  923. the result? Immediately, it says, he and his

  924. family were baptized. What do I need to do? You

  925. need to know who Jesus is you need to believe

  926. in Jesus and So we're gonna teach you and speak

  927. to you the word of the Lord and when he knew

  928. when he heard the word of the Lord The word of

  929. the Lord convicted him that he need to be baptized

  930. He didn't say a prayer Perfect opportunity for

  931. that to show us in the scriptures that he needed

  932. to say that prayer But he didn't say that prayer

  933. he and his family were baptized I want to circle

  934. back to what we read at the first. Don't quench

  935. the Spirit. We just talked about that. You receive

  936. the Spirit when you obey the gospel, when you're

  937. buried with Him in baptism. Don't quench the

  938. Spirit. Don't despise prophecies. The prophecy

  939. of Joel was that the day will come when anybody

  940. that calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

  941. What does that mean? Well, we read in Acts 22

  942. what that means. It means to be baptized. It

  943. doesn't mean cry out, Lord, Lord. Matthew 7 says,

  944. not everyone that says to me, Lord, Lord, will...

  945. be saved not everybody that says to me lord lord

  946. is going to inherit eternal life that's not the

  947. way it works that's not calling on the name of

  948. the lord maybe i think that's calling on the

  949. name lord maybe you think that's calling on the

  950. name of the lord but we're despising a prophecy

  951. if we take that prophecy and say what it is without

  952. applying the biblical interpretation so i believe

  953. today we've tested this and we're going to hold

  954. fast what's good we're going to continue to teach

  955. the gospel plan of salvation. And if you're here

  956. today and you need salvation, there's one way

  957. to obtain that salvation. And that's to be buried

  958. with Him in baptism. That's to confess the name

  959. of Jesus, repent of your sins, and then be baptized.

  960. I know that you believe. I know that you've heard

  961. what Jesus can do for you and that you believe

  962. in that. And so... Today, hold fast to what is

  963. good. Don't try to find a man -made solution

  964. to an eternal problem that only Jesus can help

  965. with. Thank you for listening to today's sermon
