  1. Welcome to the Guidable Grace Chapel podcast, where we value the expository preaching and teaching of the Word of God for the purpose of life transformation.

  2. So if you have your Bible, just look, it is Micah chapter 2, verses 12 through 13.

    Micah 2:12–13

  3. I read it from the English Standard Version.

  4. I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob.

  5. I will gather the remnant of Israel.

  6. I will set them together like sheep in a fold, like a flock in its pasture, a noisy multitude of men.

  7. He who opens the breach goes up before them.

  8. They break through and pass the gate, going out by it.

  9. Their king passes on before them, the Lord at their head.

  10. Now, just an interesting note here: the ESV, I believe the NASB and others translate verse 13.

  11. He who opens the breach goes up before them.

  12. But if you look at the King James, the New King James and others, it will say the breaker.

  13. And typically that word breaker is capitalized.

  14. And many scholars believe that is one of the messianic titles of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  15. Regardless, both passages, the way they interpret it, would be accurate.

  16. This the shepherd, this king, breaks through and he leads his people into victory.

  17. Now, as I've told you before, Micah is the author of the book that bears his name.

  18. And the book is organized into a series of three oracles.

  19. And these oracles come in three cycles.

  20. Cycle one is chapters one and two.

  21. Cycle two is chapters three, four, and five, and cycle three would be chapters six and seven.

  22. And each cycle opens with the pronouncement of judgment, but it concludes with a promise of hope.

  23. The text that we just read this morning in Micah chapter 2, verses 12 and 13 concludes the first cycle of oracles given by the prophet Micah.

    Micah 2:12

  24. And it contains a promise of hope.

  25. Now, here's what's interesting.

  26. The first promise of hope contains three fulfillments.

  27. So the first fulfillment of the first promise of hope is found in the defeat of the Assyrian king.

  28. Now, look at our text again, just to make sure that everyone's on the same page.

  29. In Micah chapter 2, verses 12 and 13.

    Micah 2:12

  30. I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob.

  31. I will gather the remnant of Israel.

  32. I will set them together like sheep in a fold, like a flock in its pasture, a noisy multitude of men.

  33. He who opens the breach goes up before them.

  34. They break through and pass the gate, going out by it.

  35. Their king passes on before them, the Lord at their head.

  36. And so the first fulfillment of the first promise of hope is found in the defeat of the Assyrian king.

  37. If you go back and look at biblical history, and you go back and look at world history, you discover that Judah and Israel, the northern kingdom of Israel, the southern kingdom known as Judah, had become very rebellious against God.

  38. They had broken the covenant with the Lord, they had entered into gross idolatry.

  39. The leadership was corrupt and wicked, and that goes for the political leadership as well as the religious leadership of the nations.

  40. And because of that, the Lord raised up a foreign enemy known as Assyria.

  41. And over time, Assyria came into the promised land and took the northern kingdom captive, and then they also went south into Judah, into Jerusalem, and they took all of the fenced-in cities, all of the cities surrounding Jerusalem.

  42. So, in other words, the king of Assyria, his name was Zenakar.

  43. He had conquered the northern kingdom and deported them, sent them away.

  44. And then he goes down to the southern kingdom and surrounds the capital, which was Jerusalem, where the temple was located.

  45. And so all the people were in essence in a pen.

  46. It's like sheep coming into a pen at night.

  47. That's what happened to the people of Judah.

  48. They were fenced in, they were hemmed in.

  49. They were like in a pen in the city of Jerusalem.

  50. And Zennachib and his soldiers had surrounded the city of Jerusalem.

  51. And they were getting ready to attack.

  52. They were getting ready to conquer Jerusalem.

  53. Zednacherib, this is all of this is according to 1 Kings chapter 19.

    1 Kings 19 chapter mention

  54. Zednacherib wrote a letter to uh King Hezekiah of the king of Judah.

  55. He wrote a letter to him, a threatening letter, telling him what it what was about to happen.

  56. Hezekiah got that letter, and after he read it, he knew to go before the Lord.

  57. So he goes before the Lord and he lays out that letter and he begins to pray and he asked God to move on his behalf.

  58. And of course, God did.

  59. God honored his prayer.

  60. God honored the repentance of the people.

  61. God honored the prayer.

  62. And that night, when the Assyrian soldiers went to bed, the Lord sent an angel through the land, and 185,000 Assyrian soldiers woke up dead.

  63. And when that happened, Sennacherib turned and pulled away.

  64. And even in the historical documents, um, it just says King of Sennacherib hemmed in Hezekiah like a bird in a cage, and that's all it says.

  65. Because kings didn't write their defeat, they didn't want to record their defeat in the annals and just said, hey, we surrounded him, but then nothing happened.

  66. We know what happened.

  67. We have the biblical record, and the Lord defended his people.

  68. And when that happened, it was as if the Lord broke through the gate, and he led his sheep, he led his people into victory.

  69. And they passed on before him.

  70. And everyone in the surrounding region knew that it was the Lord who intervened on behalf of his people.

  71. And so we see that the first fulfillment of the first promise of hope was found in the defeat of the Assyrian king.

  72. The second fulfillment of the first promise of hope is found in the decree of the Persian king.

  73. Now, we've already read Micah chapter 2, verses 12 through 13 a couple of times.

    Micah 2:12–13

  74. There's no need to reference that again.

  75. But now we know how else this happened.

  76. And this is not unusual.

  77. By the way, when the prophets prophesied, when the Holy Spirit moved upon the prophets and inspired them to speak, whenever they prophesied, a lot of times what they prophesied came to pass in multiple ways.

  78. Oftentimes it would have an immediate fulfillment that was dealing with some immediate situation in the life of the prophet.

  79. And then it would come to pass in a future sense, typically the person of Christ.

  80. Well, this one happens to have three fulfillments.

  81. The first one was in the defeat of the Assyrian king.

  82. The second fulfillment came at the decree of the Persian king.

  83. Now, as I just described to you, Assyria was defeated by the Lord.

  84. He sent an angel to the camp, and 185,000 soldiers were killed by the Lord.

  85. And so the army pulled back and spared Jerusalem or Judah or the southern kingdom.

  86. However, their repentance was short-lived.

  87. Over time, they went right back into idolatry.

  88. They go right back into sin and rebellion against God.

  89. And because of that, the Lord raised up a nation known as Babylon.

  90. And Babylon came in and finished what Assyria started.

  91. They came in in three waves, and they ended up conquering Jerusalem, and they deported all of the people, sent them away, and the land was left desolate.

  92. Over time, Babylon fell to the Medo-Persian Empire.

  93. And in about 538 BC, the king of Persia, his name was Cyrus, issued a decree that the people of Jerusalem could return back to Jerusalem and rebuild.

  94. And not only did he issue the decree that the people could return back and rebuild, he financed the project.

  95. Okay, you don't get excited about that, but I do.

  96. Listen to this.

  97. Go to Ezra.

  98. Go to the book of Ezra in the Old Testament.

  99. Chapter 1, verses 1 through 11.

  100. I just want to read the account because this is fascinating.

  101. In Ezra chapter 1, verses 1 through 11, we read.

    Ezra 1 chapter mention

  102. In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled.

  103. The Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing.

  104. Thus says Cyrus, king of Persia, the Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

  105. Whoever is among you of all his people, may his God be with him.

  106. And let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and rebuild the house of the Lord, the God of Israel.

  107. He is the God who is in Jerusalem.

  108. And let each survivor in whatever place he sojourns be assisted by the men of his place with silver and gold, with goods and with beasts, besides free-willed offerings for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.

  109. Then rose up the hands of the fathers' houses of Judah and Benjamin and the priests and the Levites, everyone whose spirit God had stirred to go up to rebuild the house of the Lord that is in Jerusalem.

  110. And all who were about them aided them with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, with beasts, and with costly wares, besides all that was freely offered.

  111. Cyrus, the king, also brought out the vessels of the house of the Lord that Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and placed in the house of his gods, which was about verse 8.

  112. Cyrus, king of Persia, brought these out in the charge of Mithridath, the treasurer, who counted them to Sheshbazar, the prince of Judah.

  113. And this was the number of them: 30 basins of gold, 1,000 basins of silver, 29 censors, 30 bowls of gold, 410 bowls of silver, and 1,000 other vessels.

  114. All the vessels of gold and silver were 5,400.

  115. All these did Sheshbazar bring up when the exiles were brought up from Babylonia to Jerusalem.

  116. Now, that's a long passage of scriptures in historical documents, historical record, but basically has pointed out Cyrus, a pagan king.

  117. Did God even call his anointed?

  118. Was stirred by the Holy Spirit of God to let Jerusalem or let the people of Judah return to Jerusalem and to rebuild.

  119. And not only did he allow them to return to the land, meaning the exile was over, they were going back to the land, he financed the building project.

  120. He told everybody in his realm, hey, when these guys go back, I don't know who they're going to be.

  121. The Lord's going to put it in people's heart to go.

  122. And when they go back, help them, give them gold, give them silver, and all of that.

  123. And by the way, he had his people go get the treasuries that were in the house of the Lord, in the temple that were taken by Babylon, and put in the house of his gods.

  124. Cyrus goes and gets all of that stuff out and gives it back to Jerusalem, gives it back to the people of Judah so that they can put it in the temple.

  125. Look, here's something we need to learn about this.

  126. And the previous two fulfillments.

  127. Number one, when the king of Assyria was defeated, it was because Hezekiah went before the Lord and he prayed.

  128. He spread out the report before the Lord and he prayed and God moved on his behalf.

  129. And what that encourages us to do is that whenever we uh come up against impossible odds and circumstances and situations, or maybe you receive a negative report from the doctor or something like that.

  130. The first thing to do is don't panic.

  131. Instead, lay it before the Lord and begin to pray and begin to seek the face of God and ask the God of heaven to move on your behalf.

  132. And then what we see when the king of Persia was in power, and the Lord stirred up his heart to let the people go back into finance and building project.

  133. Here's what we can learn from this.

  134. The proverb is true.

  135. The heart of a king is in the hand of the Lord, and he can turn it just like water, however, he wishes.

  136. The Lord can move on the behalf of his people.

  137. And when the Lord gets ready to do something in the midst of his people, it will be done.

  138. A lack of people does not stop it.

  139. In fact, when you go back and look at the historical record, I want to say it was around 50,000 people who returned to Jerusalem to build.

  140. That pells in comparison to the amount of people who actually were put into exile.

  141. Only about 50,000 returned.

  142. But when they came back, they came back with the authority of the Lord upon their lives, and God supplied everything that they needed to rebuild.

  143. So here's what we need to know.

  144. When God moves on your behalf and he gives you orders and he tells you to do something, he will empower you by his spirit to do it.

  145. And the God of heaven who owns the earth, who owns the earth and the fullness thereof, and the cattle of a thousand heels, he will make sure that you have all the resources that you need in order to accomplish the purpose that God has for you.

  146. And once again, just as the Lord broke through the pin, so to speak, broke through the gate and set his people free and led his sheep into victory.

  147. By defeating the king of Assyria, he did the same thing by breaking through the gate and changing the heart of Cyrus, the Persian king, to allow the people to rebuild.

  148. And again, everyone in the region knew that that was God who did it.

  149. Even the pagan king put it in writing.

  150. The God of heaven, he's in Jerusalem.

  151. I mean, he recognized this is the hand of the Lord.

  152. And so we see that the second fulfillment of the first promise of hope is found in the decree of the Persian King.

  153. But now we come to the third and final fulfillment of the first promise of hope.

  154. It is found in the shepherd key.

  155. Listen to this.

  156. Micah chapter 2, verses 12 through 13.

    Micah 2:12–13

  157. I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob.

  158. I will gather the remnant of Israel.

  159. I will set them together like sheep in a fold, like a flock in its pasture.

  160. A noisy multitude of men.

  161. So in the scripture, the prophetic writings, when the prophets used the name Jacob, they generally meant all of God's people.

  162. And even though he said, I'm going to bring back a remnant, that remnant is going to be a great number of people.

  163. It's going to be like a noisy multitude of men.

  164. And then he said in verse 13, He who opens the breach goes up before them.

  165. They break through and pass the gate, going out by it.

  166. Their king passes on before them, the Lord, at their head.

  167. And so this passage finds his third and final fulfillment in this shepherd king, this one who would gather the remnant of his people, this one who would put men together and a fold like sheep, like a flock.

  168. And it would be a multitude of men.

  169. It's not a small number, it's a big number.

  170. It's a multitude of people.

  171. And then this shepherd is going to break through the gate.

  172. And the people are going to follow him through that gate.

  173. And they're going to be led to victory as a king leads his people.

  174. When we come to the New Testament, the New Testament picks up on this idea of a shepherd king coming to free his people and to lead them into victory.

  175. Mark chapter 1 and verse number 14 and 15 read.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  176. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God and saying, The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand.

  177. Repent and believe in the gospel.

  178. The time is at hand.

  179. The time is at hand.

  180. What was he getting at?

  181. Exile is over.

  182. You see, the New Testament picks up on the exile motif.

  183. Men, women, we have been in exile away from God in a sinful, rebellious state.

  184. Every person who is born of a man and woman, Romans chapter 5, is born with this sin nature.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  185. We are inclined to sin.

  186. We are going to sin.

  187. If you don't believe that, please sign up to work in the nursery and preschool departments.

  188. It's interesting, right?

  189. You do not have to teach your children how to lie.

  190. You have to teach them to tell the truth.

  191. You don't have to teach them how to covet.

  192. Right?

  193. Put three kids together on the floor, put one toy in the middle, and back up and see what happens.

  194. Right?

  195. Mine.

  196. Mine.

  197. Covetousness.

  198. Selfishness.

  199. Instead, you have to teach your child to share.

  200. Why?

  201. Because we're born with a sin nature and we are inclined to sin.

  202. That's what we do.

  203. And so every person who was born is born in sin and we are in exile.

  204. We are away from God.

  205. But a shepherd came.

  206. A king came.

  207. His name was Jesus.

  208. And he said, The time is at hand.

  209. Now, the time is at hand.

  210. Right now.

  211. Repent and believe in the gospel.

  212. And the New Testament paints a picture of the shepherd king who is gathering his people out of exile.

  213. And they are set free.

  214. And they are empowered by the Holy Spirit to rebuild their lives under the kingship of Jesus.

  215. So he is indeed a king.

  216. But this king also is a shepherd.

  217. He's a shepherd king.

  218. In fact, John chapter 10, Jesus says of himself that he's a shepherd.

    John 10 chapter mention

  219. And not only is he a shepherd, he's the good shepherd.

  220. And as the good shepherd, he knows his sheep.

  221. He knows everything about his sheep.

  222. He knows everything about the flock.

  223. And he prepares to lead them into victory.

  224. For example, Jesus, our shepherd king, knows the number of the flock.

  225. In John chapter 10, verses 27 and 30, we read My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

    John 10:27

  226. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.

  227. And no one will snatch them out of my hand.

  228. My father who has given them to me is greater than all.

  229. And no one is Able to snatch them out of my father's hand.

  230. I and the father are one.

  231. Now notice this shepherd king said that the sheep hear his voice, he knows them, the sheep follow him, he'll give them eternal life, and they will never perish.

  232. That means he knows exactly how many that there are.

  233. Then none of them would perish, and no one can snatch them out of his hand.

  234. Now we're told in Revelation chapter 17 and verse 8.

    Revelation 17 chapter mention

  235. The beast that you saw was and is not, and is about to rise from the bottomless pit and go to destruction.

  236. And the dwellers on earth, whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will marvel to see the beast because it was and is not and is to come.

  237. The number is set, and it is given to Jesus, our King's Shepherd, and He is not going to lose any of his people.

  238. And in time, if you are sheep in the Lord's pasture, you will hear the voice of your shepherd, you will come out of your sin, and you will come to faith in Jesus Christ, and you will walk in freedom through the power of the Holy Spirit, because that's what our shepherd king does.

  239. He knows the number, not one is going to be lost.

  240. And what this does is this emboldens our preaching and our witness for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  241. Because when we know we go around just sowing the seed of the gospel, man, it's like we just reach into a pouch and we pick up a bunch of seed and we sow it.

  242. The Puritan preachers call it sowing the word promiscuously.

  243. I mentioned this on a Wednesday night one time.

  244. We associate the word promiscuous with she ain't good.

  245. Right?

  246. But when the Puritans used that word when it came to preaching the gospel, sowing the seed promiscuously, they mean it as I'm gonna give it to everybody.

  247. That's exactly right.

  248. It is not my responsibility nor yours.

  249. Of how someone responds to the gospel.

  250. It is your responsibility.

  251. So we so the seed we give it to everybody.

  252. Because we want everybody to repent and come to faith in Jesus Christ.

  253. The Lord knows everybody they will become faith.

  254. Because he knows the number God has given it to him.

  255. Here's something else that's interesting.

  256. Not only does he know the number of the flock, he knows the names.

  257. So you're not just one of many, even though you're one of many.

  258. This is also very personal.

  259. We have a personal Savior who knows you by name.

  260. He knows everything about you and still loves you.

  261. John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  262. Verse number three.

  263. To him, the gatekeeper opens, the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  264. Yes.

  265. When Jesus went to the grave of Lazarus, he called him by name.

  266. Lazarus! Come forth.

  267. Life came back to Lazarus.

  268. He came out of that grave.

  269. And that's a very real picture of our spiritual salvation.

  270. Jesus came to you personally through the preaching of the Word of God, through the person of the Holy Spirit.

  271. And he told you, Come out.

  272. Come out of exile.

  273. Come out of your sin and rebellion from God and come into the fold.

  274. It's very personal.

  275. So, on one hand, we hold to the truth that God knows every person who's going to come to faith from now to whoever the last person is.

  276. And so we preach the gospel to the masses.

  277. Because out of that, there's going to be a certain group of people that come to faith in Christ.

  278. But it's not a nebulous group.

  279. It's a personal group.

  280. Christ knows you.

  281. He knows everything about you.

  282. He comes in your circumstance, in your deepest, darkest, and the grossest.

  283. It says, Come out.

  284. Spiritual life comes to you.

  285. And you come walking out of that great new creation.

  286. Jesus Christ.

  287. He knows the number of the flock.

  288. He knows the names.

  289. He knows every circumstance or characteristic.

  290. He knows every characteristic about you.

  291. Listen to this.

  292. In Psalm 139, we're going to read verses 1 through 4 and then 13 through 60.

  293. Psalm 139, verses 1 through 4.

    Psalms 139:1–4

  294. O Lord, you have searched me and known me.

  295. You know when I sit down and when I rise up.

  296. You discern my thoughts from afar.

  297. You search out my path and my light down and are acquainted with all my ways.

  298. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

  299. That's fascinating.

  300. Before you ever say the thing, the Lord already knows.

  301. So before you ever utter up a prayer, he's already heard it.

  302. But he still calls you to pray anyway.

  303. Because again, he's a personal God, and that's how you enter into a personal relationship with Christ.

  304. Go down to verse 13.

  305. For you formed my inward parts, you knitted me together in my mother's womb.

  306. I praise you, for I'm fearfully and wonderfully made.

  307. Wonderful are your works, my soul knows it very well.

  308. My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.

  309. Your eyes saw my unformed substance.

  310. In your book were written every one of them.

  311. The days that were formed for me, when yet there was none of them.

  312. God knows everything about you.

  313. Our shepherd king knows everything about you.

  314. All of your characteristics, your idiosyncrasies.

  315. And he loves you.

  316. That's the thing.

  317. He is faithful.

  318. He's a faithful God who loves you.

  319. Now, he loves you enough not to keep you there.

  320. Right?

  321. Don't misunderstand what I'm saying for easy grace, and you can live however you want to live, because you know, God made me that way.

  322. And, you know, he knows.

  323. No, no, no.

  324. He loves you in spite of you.

  325. And he brings you along to where he wants you to be because you are being conformed to the image of Christ.

  326. He knows your characteristics, he knows every circumstance that you're about to go through, that you have been through, that you're in right now.

  327. And as our great shepherd, he's already made provisions for you.

  328. Psalm 23, verses 1 through 6.

    Psalms 23 chapter mention

  329. Most of you memorized Psalm 23 in kindergarten, but I will read it anyway.

  330. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

  331. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside still waters, he restores my soul, he leads me to paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

  332. Even though I walked in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.

  333. For you are with me, your robot and your staff.

  334. They comfort me.

  335. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

  336. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows.

  337. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

  338. The Lord knows everything about you, and he knows every circumstance that you're in, that you've been through, and that you're about to go through.

  339. And he's already made provision.

  340. When David wrote, The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, we would say it this way: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

  341. In other words, you you would not want for anything that you need to accomplish the will of God for your life.

  342. I'm not promising you you're gonna be a millionaire, I'm not promising you that you're always gonna walk in health and prosperity.

  343. What I'm promising is that you will always have enough to do the will of God because that's what the Bible teaches.

  344. He will provide for you, He will lead you.

  345. We do not have a shepherd king who sits on the throne and is not moved with compassion on behalf of his people.

  346. Just like in our opening illustration, the shepherd, the king, took off his kingly robe and put on the robe of a shepherd, and he went down to free the sheep.

  347. So it is with our shepherd king.

  348. He is moved with compassion for us, and he leads us as a shepherd does his sheep.

  349. A shepherd does not drive the sheep from the rear, he leads from the front.

  350. And he clears the path.

  351. That's why he has that long crook.

  352. He clears the path before them and he leads them.

  353. He also protects them.

  354. The reason why he has the rod is so he can beat the enemy away if he needs to.

  355. And he can also throw it in the direction of a sheep that's wandering off.

  356. It's getting off the path, getting close to the cliff, getting close to danger.

  357. Or maybe it's about to eat poisonous food.

  358. And so he will throw the rod at the direction of the sheep.

  359. He doesn't want to hit the sheep, but he throws it in that direction to get the sheep's attention so it veers back on the right path.

  360. The Lord does that for us.

  361. And he preserves us.

  362. Just like the shepherd would tend to the sheep, and he would, he, and you know, before he put them in the fold, he would go over each sheep.

  363. By the way, he would call them by name.

  364. He knew them.

  365. And he would go over their body, he would fill them, pour oil all over their head so that it would like cover their ears and their eyes and their nose and everything.

  366. It kept certain insects from boring and producing lava in those areas that would cause damage.

  367. It was a shepherd's way of preserving them.

  368. And that's what our God does for us.

  369. He preserves us.

  370. We have a good shepherd, a kingly shepherd.

  371. And here's the thing, guys.

  372. He is leading us to victory.

  373. Just as in Micah chapter 2, verses 12 and 13, it says, He breaks through, and then everybody follows him, and they go by the gate too, and they go into victory.

    Micah 2:12

  374. Yes, because our shepherd king has already won.

  375. He's already conquered.

  376. We too are more than conquerors through him, through Jesus Christ.

  377. It's not because of how good you are or how much faith you have, how much Bible knowledge you have.

  378. The only reason why we are victorious is because we are in Jesus Christ.

  379. He's the one that leads us to victory.

  380. The Bible tells us in Acts chapter 2, verses 32 through 35.

    Acts 2:32–35

  381. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we are all witnesses.

  382. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.

  383. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.

  384. Obviously, Peter was talking about Pentecost.

  385. He said, Hey, what are you guys hearing and seeing?

  386. This has been prophesied about all along.

  387. We are filled with the Holy Spirit of God, and we are being empowered by the Spirit of God to be witnesses for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  388. And part of being empowered by the Holy Spirit of God is that he is using us to advance the kingdom on this earth until all of his enemies become his footstool.

  389. 1 Corinthians chapter 15, verse 25.

    1 Corinthians 15:25

  390. The context is the resurrection and how that plays out, leading into what we would call eternity or eternal perfect state or heaven.

  391. But listen to this little tucked in there is this text in 1 Corinthians chapter 15, verse 25.

    1 Corinthians 15:25

  392. For he must reign until he puts all his enemies under his feet.

  393. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

  394. For he must reign until all of his enemies have been put under his feet.

  395. Listen, guys, we serve a shepherd king who has broken through the gates.

  396. His sheep hear his voice.

  397. He protects us, he provides for us, he empowers us by his spirit, and he is leading us into victory until all of his enemies are put under his feet, and the very last enemy to be destroyed will be death.

  398. Yes, that will happen when the Lord Jesus Christ returns, and the dead in Christ shall rise.

  399. And then, of course, all of us who are live in Romane should be caught up with the clouds.

  400. That's when death is destroyed.

  401. Yes.

  402. By the way, Acts chapter 2, 1 Corinthians 15, Hebrews, I go on and on.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  403. They're all referencing Psalm 110, verses 1 and 2.

    Psalms 110:1

  404. By the way, that is the most referenced Psalm, Old Testament text in the New Testament.

  405. So the apostles and the apostolic communicate something to us.

  406. No, we march in victory until Jesus comes back.

  407. Now, does that mean we have setbacks?

  408. Oh, we have setbacks.

  409. Absolutely.

  410. It goes in cycles.

  411. We have setbacks, we have ups and downs.

  412. In case you haven't noticed, we're kind of in a downtime right now.

  413. But the problem is, we only want to look at history in a relatively narrow slice.

  414. If you zoom out and see the big picture, you see just how victorious the kingdom of God has been since the first century.

  415. Proof in point, you're sitting here today in an air-conditioned building with lights, sound, comfortable chairs, screens, audio, visual.

  416. And guess what?

  417. None of us are scared that the police are going to come in here and arrest us.

  418. Now, that's not true for everywhere around the world.

  419. But it is for a large portion of the world.

  420. And as time goes on, that's got to be the case around the world.

  421. Because the Lord must reign until all of his enemies are his footstool.

  422. So what you do right now for the kingdom of God matters.

  423. Even if you don't see it, future generations will benefit from it.

  424. So it's important that we follow our shepherd king.

  425. Because he is leading to victory.

  426. Matthew 16, 18.

  427. It's a great passage, you know, where Peter proclaims that Jesus is the Son of God, and Jesus says, I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

  428. The church is being led to victory.

  429. Because our shepherd king is leading us into victory.

  430. That's what he does.

  431. That's who he is.

  432. And if you're one of his sheep, you too are going to victory.

  433. The third fulfillment of the first promise of hope is found in the shepherd king.

  434. And if you do not know the shepherd king, his name is Jesus.

  435. He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

  436. But he's also the great shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep.

  437. And he did so with you if you're a child of God on his heart and mind.

  438. Because he knows you by name.

  439. He knows your circumstances, and he'll lead you through it.

  440. So that he gets the glory and the church marches in victory.

  441. Amen.
