And then this evening I want to preach on chapter 6 verse 1 here where the Bible says children obey your parents and the Lord for this is right, honor thy father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise that it may be well with thee and now may us live long on the earth.

Now this morning we learned the 10 commandments and one of those 10 commandments is being reiterated here in this chapter specifically honoring your father and mother.

And so the title of my sermon this evening is this obey mom and dad, your life depends on it.

Obey mom and dad, your life depends on it.

Now I have a challenge, I only have one of these left alright, but if there's a teen or younger that feels like they can give me all of the 10 commandments with the motions I taught them this morning, you can come on down and do it.

But you have to get them all right, is anybody willing to take the challenge?

Anytime I say mom, mother,

anything like mom, mommy, mother,

you have to say yes, ma'am, okay?

So if I say it at some point and y'all just forget,

well, then you all die

and you have to go back sit down, okay?

If, if you do it, you know, a few times in a row,

you don't know, we don't know how many times

because we don't know how long we're going to live.

But if you do them to my satisfaction,

then you all get a prize and candy too, all right?

No one's wanted fun-sized candy more.

Never.

And this is, this is genuine, awesome,

Snickers name brand, okay?

So we're going to just do a test.

So if I said father, y'all got to go,

So I'm going to be reading verses.

So if I say it, you got to say yes sir or yes ma'am

whenever I say that word, okay?

You don't have to stay up here too long,

but you got to, you got to stay alive, all right?

So we're going to look back at verse number two.

The Bible says honor thy father and mother.

Good job.

Which is the first commandment with promise.

So according to the Bible, if you obey your parents,

then he's going to grant you longer life.

It's that simple.

You know why obey your mom and dad?

All right, good job.

Because God will grant you longer life.

It's that simple.

And I want to go to Deuteronomy chapter five now,

if you would go to Deuteronomy chapter five.

This is a quote of the Old Testament, of course.

We have Exodus 20, which is where the 10 commandments were given.

And in Deuteronomy chapter number five,

we also have this instruction.

Now I want to look at verse number 16.

So Deuteronomy chapter five, verse number 16.

The Bible reads honor thy father and thy mother

as the Lord thy God have commanded thee

that thy days may be prolonged

and that it may go well with thee

in the land with the Lord thy God giveeth thee.

So notice God give this instruction to obey our parents.

And when we do so, we get a longer life.

Now I want to pay attention to a word though.

Notice it says may be prolonged.

Okay, so obviously there's always going to be exceptions.

Obviously not everyone has some kind of guarantee.

We don't even know what that number is.

We don't know if that number is you lived to be 70 or 80,

130, there's no number necessarily

that's for sure bet in the Bible.

But the Bible is telling us that it'll be prolonged,

meaning that God's going to give you

the most amount of time on this earth when you obey mom

and dad, both mom and dad.

All right, y'all guys, this is so good.

As good as God the father.

Proverbs chapter one, look at verse number eight.

The Bible says,

My son, hear the instruction of thy father

and forsake not the law of thy mother.

For they shall be an ornament of grace into thy head

and chains about thy neck.

What's interesting is how the Bible says

that it's going to actually save your neck.

You know what's going to save your neck is obeying mom

and dad.

Good job.

Now, I want to look at Proverbs 6 as well, because it also brings up saving your neck.

Proverbs 6, and look at verse 20.

The Bible says, my son, keep thy fathers.

Good job.

Father's commandment and forsake not the law of thy mother.

And the Bible says here, bind them continually upon thine heart and tie them about thy

neck.

So here, again, it's the same thing that we should obey our parents, because it's going

to save our neck.

And tying something around your neck, what I was thinking about in Proverbs 1 is it's

funny, it has chains.

And this is like a decoration.

People put chains on their body as some kind of a decoration to look cool or to act

like they're tough.

Flavor Flaves got a big clock.

I don't even know why he has a clock.

Is he just bad at telling time?

He's just got to have like a big clock around his neck or something like that.

But obviously, the Bible isn't necessarily saying chains about thy neck is a bad thing.

It's kind of in a good reference, right?

It's saying that this is going to preserve you.

It's like a nice decoration.

And really, people like being around people that obey their mom.

Some of y'all are dead.

I'm just telling you, okay?

Y'all just go ahead and get a prize, and y'all just died too quickly on this one.

Now go to Proverbs 10.

So number one, we obey mom and dad because our life depends on it.

Number two, we obey mom and dad because it'll save your neck.

Number three, we obey mom and dad because it makes them happy.

It makes them happy.

Proverbs chapter 10 verse one, the Proverbs of Solomon,

Proverbs 10 · chapter mention

a wise son, make of the glad father.

But a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

So according to the Bible, if you want your parents to be pleased with you,

you obey them.

You do what they say.

Now we should just have a good attitude towards their parents

that when they ask us something, we say,

yes sir, yes ma'am, that we're having a positive attitude,

that we want to obey them, that we want to do what's right

and you know when God looks at that, he's pleased with you,

he's happy with you and he wants you to have a long life.

But when you're disobeying your parents,

he does not want you to live long.

He does not like it.

He does not like being around it.

And others do not like it when you are disobeying your dad.

Look at Proverbs 15 verse 20.

Proverbs 15:20

Proverbs 15 verse 20, the Bible says,

Proverbs 15:20

a wise son maketh a glad father.

But a foolish man despises his mother.

Look at verse 26.

The Bible says this.

He that wasted his father

and chase of the way his mother

is a son that causes shame

and bring it through approach.

to spend your whole life being taught,

raised, paid for, provided for

by your dad.

Y'all all died.

Think about this verse because

it's saying someone that's

chasing away

his mother.

Like that's active energy.

Not only you not obeying them,

you're actually spending effort

and energy to get your mom

away from you.

Why in the world

would you want to get mom

away from you

when you spent your whole life

crying when mom would leave you?

I mean, let's just be honest

about little kids.

I mean,

as soon as mom

starts walking away,

they lose their mind.

I walk away

and they don't care at all.

Okay.

And you know, mom,

you know,

I need some energy.

Okay.

Mom deserves more energy than this.

Okay.

She does so much work.

She works tirelessly

and she cares so much

and she wants to check in.

You know, sometimes dad,

he's just kind of like,

they're alive.

You know what I mean?

But mom,

she cares if you're breathing.

Like how many times has it been

at night

that my wife is just like,

you know, what was that?

Or do you think the kids are breathing?

And it's just like,

what am I going to do if they're not?

You know, it's just like,

no.

I handed back our baby.

I think it was yesterday

or two days ago.

I don't know.

I handed the baby back

and I guess she just fell asleep.

And then my wife's just like,

what were you doing to her?

I'm just thinking like holding the baby.

She's like, well,

she just went right to sleep.

She was worried that maybe

she was injured in some microscopic way

that no one could ever tell but a mother.

You know?

And it's like,

why would you want to chase away your mom?

I think I snuck a mother in there

and you guys didn't get it.

And here's what I want you to pay attention to

is it's the son

that caused the shame.

Read the verse with me.

It's a son that causes shame.

It's not a mother that causes shame.

It's not a dad that causes shame.

It's not the father's fault.

It's the son's fault.

The son is the one causing shame.

And you know, it's embarrassing.

It's embarrassing that a son would act like that

because you know what?

The parents would never want them to be like this.

Dad never taught you to be like that.

Mom never said for you to do something like that.

It was the son that's causing the shame.

And so who should the blame go to?

Not the dad, but the son.

It says, and bring it reproach.

Of course, what does this do?

It causes the word of God or Christianity to look back.

And that's a sad reality.

It's a sad reality.

And you know what?

We want kids that love God and obey their parents

because then it makes our heavenly father look good.

That was a close call.

You know what?

God the father is someone that deserves respect.

And you know what?

We respect God the father

through obeying mom and dad.

Yes, sir.

I want to look at Proverbs 20 verse 20.

Proverbs 20:20

The Bible says this,

whoso curseth his father or his mother,

his lamp shall be put out in obscured darkness.

So, you know, this is not a positive verse

for those who disobey mom and dad.

Yes, ma'am.

You want to obey mom and dad and your father

and your mom and your dad.

Because if you curse your father or your mother

your lamp shall be put into obscure darkness.

We don't want that.

Think about the lamp.

You know, we sang the song tonight.

We had somebody even quote the verse or the Ethan

that thy word is a lamp under my feet.

You know, what is the point of the lamp

in the illustration of the Bible?

It's so you can see where you're going.

And if you don't have a lamp

so you can see where you're going

what could possibly happen?

Well, you could step on something

that could harm you.

You could step on something that could break your foot.

You could step into a trap.

You could step into a hole

and you could get trapped by falling into a pit.

You know, the Bible brings up the idea of falling into a pit.

So of course we obey our mom and dad

because they could help us to stop from falling into pits.

If you think about just animals.

You look at a goose, like a mother goose.

She's usually leading her young.

And if they follow her,

they're not going to fall into a hole

because the mom's not going to fall into a hole.

Okay.

And so if you're falling right behind,

but you know that duck that wanders off

and is not next to mommy.

Hey, he might just fall right into the pit.

He might fall into the grate.

He might fall into some hole

or he might get led astray.

Obviously you could get lost.

And so it's important to follow your mother

and your father

because they're going to lead you in good paths,

generally speaking.

And of course our heavenly father

leads us into those good paths.

You should even obey grandma.

That was a trick I was just seeing.

You should still say it, all right?

So grandma, yeah, that's right.

And great grandma should still be obeyed too, huh?

Because if you don't have a lamp in your feet,

you're just going to perish.

You're going to die young.

You're going to die early.

You're going to fall into all kinds of traps.

Hey, you know, it's hard for you kids to realize this,

but your parents, you know, they know quite a bit.

They've survived.

They've, they've survived a while.

Some of us have survived a real long time, okay?

That means they've missed a lot of holes along the way.

They, you know, they know how to drive

because boy, if you've gone this many years driving,

you survived.

I mean, think about all the,

think about all the close calls in your life.

You know, I can think of lots of times in my life

where I'm like, wow, that was kind of a close call,

especially on the highway,

especially just in life.

People that have served in the military,

you probably have some close calls.

People that have served in a dangerous job,

you know, sometimes maybe even dad driving.

That could have been scary.

Or maybe mom driving.

That could have been scary.

Okay?

Or grandma.

You know, you never know.

And you want to make sure that, hey, you recognize,

hey, if your parents have been around this long,

dad might be right occasionally.

He might know some things.

You need to listen to what kind of instruction he has.

Oh, well, things are different when you were a kid.

You know, you had, you know,

my dad would say you'd have to walk uphill 20 miles.

And then uphill back home.

I don't even know how that works.

But you know what?

I bet there was a lot of traps along the way.

I want you to go to Proverbs 23 verse 22.

Proverbs 23:22

The reason why we're obeying our mom and dad

is so that we don't get destroyed.

So point one of the sermon was,

we obey our mom and dad

because our life will be dependent upon it.

We obey mom and dad

because they'll save your neck.

We obey our parents because it makes them happy.

And we obey mom and dad

so we don't get destroyed.

Look what it says in Proverbs 28 verse 24.

Proverbs 28:24

Whoso rabid his father

or his mother

and say it is no transgression,

the same as the companion of a destroyer.

Notice again, someone that would take away

from their parents, from their mom or dad

and say, hey, that's not a big deal.

It's my parents.

Is a companion of a destroyer.

You know, we shouldn't even take from our own mom and dad.

All right, you guys did good.

So when I say mom, you say, good job.

When I say dad, you say, when I say father, you say,

when I say grandma, you say, when I say alligator,

say crocodile.

That's what you say, right?

Proverbs chapter 30, look at verse 11.

Proverbs 30 · chapter mention

The Bible says, there's a generation that cursed their father

and have not blessed their mother.

That's a shame.

You notice that in this verse that sometimes you see a big group acting in the same way.

And I think that's pretty common.

You also have the prophet, Elisha, when he is coming back from Elisha

and his encounter, he's mocked by several children.

And they're like, go up bald head, go up bald head.

But it's like a pack of a bunch of children.

And you kind of wonder like, where was their mom with all these children?

You know, it's, and I don't know exactly how many kids,

but we know that 42 were torn up of, of bears.

Two she bears come out and they tear 40 in two children.

You know, how many was the total group?

I don't know.

Was that the total group?

Was it 42?

Was it even more?

But we, we see a pattern.

It seems like in a group setting,

sometimes kids are disrespectful to their mom and disrespectful to their dad

because other kids are being that way.

And so, you know, it's important for you at church to, to, to obey your mom and dad.

So that way other kids will obey mom and dad.

Because if you start disobeying your parents,

well then other kids might start doing the same thing.

They might start acting up.

And we don't want to be a generation that curses their father

and does not bless their mother.

Proverbs 30 verse 17,

Proverbs 30:17

the eye that mocketh that his father and despise it to obey his mother,

the ravens of the valley shall pick it out

and the young eagle shall eat it.

That's crazy.

Have you ever heard a bird eat your eye before?

Man, that would be crazy.

He's, he's, he's, no, I'm not messing with that, you know.

Just an eagle come out of nowhere and just pick your eye out of your socket.

I mean, that's got to be pretty rough.

Just for not, just for mocking your dad.

And notice it didn't say mock your dad.

It says the eye that mocks your dad.

So just your eye mocking your father.

What would that look like?

I wonder if there's any teenagers in here

that know what an eye that mocketh his father looks like.

Maybe, maybe that, right?

Maybe just rolling the eyes.

I mean, God is not saying that you even said anything necessarily.

Obviously an attitude like that.

You probably did say something to dad.

Some of you all almost died there.

I don't want you guys to die young, all right?

But obviously we shouldn't mock our father with our mouth.

We should, we should respect dad.

But just rolling the eyes is enough for God to say,

hey, why don't I just pluck that thing out of there?

That's some serious words here.

You know, the eye that mocketh at his father.

And we have in this verse that despises to obey his mother.

It means he doesn't want to do what mom says.

He doesn't like what mom says.

He wants to just, eh, mom said to clean my room.

Why would mom do that?

Mom.

Mommy.

Mother.

All right, you guys get a prize.

Hopefully there's enough.

I don't know how many just left.

I mean, these are some serious commandments.

You know, we don't want to have children's eyes plucked out.

You know, you guys, you take them to the eye doctor,

but you know, it's more important that the eye doctor

is teaching them not to roll their eyes

so that the young eagles don't pluck it out.

You don't want to lose your eyes.

Go to Proverbs 31.

And Proverbs 31 is some instructions from Lemuel's mother.

Now, just because we stopped playing the game doesn't mean

that when you kids leave, you don't stop playing the game.

All right?

You can still, when your dad says something,

what are you going to say?

When your mom says something, what are you going to say?

Are you going to go like this?

You want to keep those eyes.

You know what I mean?

Are you going to be like,

Mom, are you going to act like that?

No.

Mom says, clean your room.

You say, Dad says, obey your mom.

Mom and Dad say, read your Bible.

Right.

What if your grandma says to read your Bible?

Yeah, exactly.

What if grandpa says it?

Yes, sir.

Good job.

I like this.

So when you leave here,

you're going to remember the 10 commandments.

You're going to say yes, sir and yes, ma'am.

All right?

Now, I like to give tribute to my mom for Proverbs 31

because these are two things that she taught me.

All right?

And you know what?

We need some grandma Shelley to teach us this evening.

All right?

From Proverbs 31 verse 1, the Bible says,

Proverbs 31:1

the words of King Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him,

what my son and what the son of my womb

and what the son of my vows give not thy strength unto women,

nor thy ways that that which destroyeth kings.

It is not for kings, O Lemuel.

It is not for kings to drink wine

nor for princes to drink strong drinks.

So we have two things mentioned here

that the mom is giving a warning about.

Now, verse 3 brings up women.

There's nothing wrong with women.

It's not saying that women are bad.

But what she's really saying here to her son

is she's saying you need to not hang around the horse.

That's what she's really saying, okay?

No horse.

And then she's saying no wine.

All right?

So you're going to say that with me, okay?

All right?

Especially you boys, all right?

You boys.

You ready?

We're going to say, grandma said,

no horse.

No wine.

Yeah, this is going to save your life.

Just think about it.

If our children, if our sons

had no horse and no wine,

they'd do really good.

You know what screws up most men?

One of those.

Any of those, okay?

And then fortunately they both lead to the same direction

in many cases.

And of course with wine, you know,

expanded into beer, drugs,

all kinds of things like that.

You want to stay sober.

You don't want to go down this road

and you need to listen to your mom.

You need to listen to your grandma.

You know, this is what my mother would tell you.

This is what my mom told me.

This is what grandma Shelly would tell you, my children.

No horse and no wine.

And she would say it just like that.

She doesn't tell you to get a belt,

but that's a different lesson, all right?

Look at this.

Verse three, give not thy strength unto women,

nor thy ways that that was destroyed at kings.

Hordom will destroy you.

That's why you want to stay away from it.

That's why you want to have a good woman.

Now in this chapter,

he doesn't say to...

The mother doesn't say to stay away from women.

It's to stay away from the hoarish woman.

Look at what it says in verse 10,

who can find a virtuous woman

for her price is far above rubies.

So you know what, you young men,

you need to be looking for a virtuous woman.

A woman who loves God,

who goes to church,

who's kept herself pure

and that wants to marry a godly man.

That's the type of woman that you want.

And you know what, if you do that,

you're going to have a really good life.

If you go after the whores and you go after wine,

boy, it's going to destroy you.

Boy, you're going to have a really bad life

and we're supposed to listen to our mother here.

And you know what, we need the mothers

to teach their sons these lessons

and to warn about the hoarish woman

and to warn about the wine.

Notice it says in verse number 4,

it is not for kings, O Lemuel,

it is not for kings to drink wine,

nor for princes strong drink,

lest they drink and forget the law

and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish

and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

Let him drink and forget his poverty

and remember his misery no more.

You know what, we shouldn't be drinking alcohol.

We shouldn't be drinking wine.

We shouldn't be drinking beer.

It's going to cause you to forget who you are.

It's going to cause you to forget

that you're a child of God.

It's going to forget that you're a child of your parents.

You're going to forget the laws of God.

You're going to forget the rules of God.

You're going to forget the Ten Commandments.

You're just going to go down a bad path.

You should just stay away from it.

And you know what, some things

that, you know, in this world seem pretty tempting.

Let me give you a little secret, kids, okay?

Alcohol tastes bad.

It's not even good.

It's poison.

It burns.

It doesn't taste good.

It smells bad.

It makes you smell bad.

And it makes you act like a toddler.

It makes you act really silly

and really stupid.

And there's no point in doing such a thing.

If you want to drink something, drink some juice.

That's the good kind of wine, right?

Drink some lemonade.

Drink some grape juice.

That sounds good.

Drink some apple juice.

You know what?

Alcohol is just going to ruin your life.

It's going to ruin your mind.

It's going to ruin every part of your body.

Alcohol destroys every part of your body.

And why do most people drink it then?

Because they're around the wrong crowd.

You guys stay around this crowd

that's obeying their mom and dad.

You do what mom and dad say.

And you know what?

Hey, you're going to live a long, prosperous life.

You don't obey mom and dad.

And you hang around the wrong crowd

and you drink a lot of alcohol.

Well, it's going to destroy your life.

Most people are not going to go try alcohol by themselves.

So here's the thing.

Some kid in your life,

some adult in your life

may try to get you to drink alcohol.

And what do you guys need to say?

No.

No wine.

Some guy's going to want to take you somewhere

or some people might want to take you somewhere

where there's whorish women.

And what are you going to say?

No whores.

So no wine and no whores.

You got to say no to those things.

You got to obey mom and dad.

Now here's the best thing.

If someone offers you this,

you know what you need to do?

You need to make sure to tell your parents right away.

If anybody ever offers you

any kind of wine

or any kind of alcohol

or any kind of beer

or any kind of drugs,

you just tell mom and dad.

And let me tell you something.

Mom and dad are not going to be mad at you

for telling them.

They want you to tell them.

You know?

And it's okay to say no.

It's okay to get out of that situation

and we should all do so.

What does the Bible say in verse 8?

Open thy mouth for the dumb

and the cause of all such

as are pointed to destruction.

Open thy mouth, judge righteously

and plead the cause of the poor needy

who can find a virtuous woman

for her price is far above rubies.

You know what you ladies?

You need to also never drink wine

and never be a whore.

It won't help you.

It will not bless you.

And you know what?

If you keep yourself pure from these things,

you know what?

You'll have a godly man

that wants to marry you someday.

And what does the Bible say?

Your price is far above.

It's priceless.

It's priceless today.

And you know what?

That's never been more true

than in 2026 America.

But you know what?

It takes a lot of work to be here.

It's not easy.

It's really easy

to just disobey mom and dad.

It's really easy

to just do whatever you want.

It's really easy to be around bad friends

and just give in to temptation.

It's really hard to say no.

But if you say no,

it's going to be something that's worthwhile.

Something that you can't buy with money.

It's something that you can't go back on.

I want to go to one more place.

Go to Matthew 15.

If you would go to Matthew 15.

What we've learned this evening

is we need to obey mom and dad

because your life depends upon it.

You're going to have a longer life

when you obey mom and dad.

Number two, it's going to save your neck.

Number three, it's going to make them happy and glad.

Number four, it's not going to destroy you.

And number five,

you're not going to lose your eyes.

I don't want that.

Here's the sixth one.

Jesus said it.

How about that?

Matthew 15, look at verse four through six.

And I want to make sure to quote this whole verse.

I'm going to turn there with you.

But Matthew chapter 15,

Matthew 15 · chapter mention

look at verse number four through six.

For God commanded saying,

honor thy father and mother

and he that curseth father and mother,

let him die the death.

That's Jesus' own words about this.

But ye say,

whosoever shall say to his father and his mother

is a gift by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me

and are there not as father as mother,

he shall be free.

Thus ye have made the commandment of God

of none effect by your tradition.

There's a lot of people that don't obey mom and dad.

They don't care about what mom and dad said.

They think that they know better than mom and dad.

They think that they're going to have a better life,

not doing what their parents said.

But look, your mom,

she changed your diapers.

She was pregnant with you.

She birthed you.

She fed you.

She clothed you.

She cried for you.

She was there for all these moments.

Why do you think she'd give you advice

that wasn't there to preserve your life?

She's invested so much in you.

She's invested more than anybody.

Why would she not want to give you advice?

You need to take that very seriously.

Your dad's been paying for this for a long time

and you've only been costing him money.

This is not the kind of investment

that gives you back financially.

He cares about you.

In fact, many times parents care about their kids

more than the kids care about themselves.

You don't even realize it.

So we need to obey our mom and dad

because at the end of the day,

our lives depend on it.

Literally, metaphorically, in every way.

I hope you guys have learned a lot this week.

Remember those 10 commandments.

Remember what your parents say.

When they say something, you say,

Yes, sir.

And yes.

All right, let's go to some prayer.

Thank you, Heavenly Father, so much for these children.

Thank you so much for parents.

I pray that we would take their commandments

and instructions seriously.

I pray that you would encourage the families this week

to keep everyone safe as they go home.

I pray that you would help children

to stay in the right crowd,

to read their Bible,

to realize it's important to obey mom and dad.

And I pray that we would continue to serve you

for the rest of our lives.
