  1. Good morning. Am I on? Oh, I am on. How's everybody

  2. doing today? Good to see you too. It's good to

  3. see some new faces this morning. I hope that

  4. after church we get some time to say hello like

  5. Greg said and I'm so honored to be with you guys

  6. today. My name is Marissa Cantu. I'll be bringing

  7. you the message. We've been in the series of

  8. the blueprint and this blueprint today is talking

  9. about abiding in prayer, abiding in Christ and

  10. I wanted to open up with a bestie story, right?

  11. So one of the questions was what's a favorite

  12. memory with your best friend, right? And so the

  13. reason I said that is because One of my best

  14. friends is here. Her name is Beverly. And we

  15. have this long -distance relationship where we

  16. don't have to talk every day, but she's always

  17. in my heart. I always think about her. But I

  18. had to do something to create that long -distance

  19. relationship. We have a lot of memories together,

  20. but I don't think that it would have worked if

  21. I would have met Beverly in Florida and said

  22. hello and then just moved. to Illinois and then

  23. we would have this just natural amazing connection,

  24. right? Like something had to happen in the middle.

  25. Like something had to happen to create and establish

  26. that relationship and that connection and that

  27. endurance. And so we met at the park. playing

  28. tennis with her sister, and the story is that

  29. she stole me from her sister because I knew her

  30. sister first. But we became fast friends. We

  31. found out that we lived about five blocks away

  32. from each other. We ended up having the keys

  33. to each other's house. We found out that we had

  34. a lot of things in common. We loved the same

  35. style of clothes. We wore the same size, the

  36. same size shoes. She's a foodie. I like to cook,

  37. so I would leave my leftovers on the counter.

  38. She would come and eat them. any time of the

  39. day and so when something was missing in my closet

  40. I would call her hey do you have my belt yeah

  41. I came by earlier and so we just had that kind

  42. of relationship right and then it came time to

  43. for me to move back home and it was a sad time

  44. right it's a sad time when you break away from

  45. relationships of any kind. And so I moved back

  46. home, and we find our way to each other at least

  47. four or five times a year. She's been here almost

  48. every month since June or July. I'll be down

  49. there in December. And so we find our way back

  50. to each other often. And we have this relationship

  51. that is steadfast. There's not a time where there's...

  52. these ebb and flows of ups and downs. There's

  53. things that we go through in life, but there's

  54. never judgment. It's like that one game. We listen

  55. and we don't judge, right? And so there's this

  56. connection that has been established. There's

  57. a consistency between our relationship that created

  58. this deeper sense of friendship, right? And so

  59. the scripture that I'm going to talk about today

  60. is the journey of Jesus. talking to his disciples,

  61. like right before he's going to depart. And before

  62. I get into that, let's just pray. Let's pray

  63. about the word. I pray that we're not thinking

  64. about the Chicago Bears versus Green Bay game

  65. at noon. Don't think about the wings or the chili

  66. on the stove or whatever you left cooking. Let's

  67. take some time to just bring it all in and ask

  68. that we could focus on what God has for our hearts

  69. today. Amen. Father God, we just come before

  70. you and we thank you for this opportunity that

  71. we get to come and we get to gather. And we're

  72. together this morning. We don't have to be. We

  73. could have been at home. We could have been doing

  74. other things. But this morning we chose to take

  75. some time aside and to just focus on you. And

  76. we're thankful for this time that we're together

  77. in fellowship. If you're watching from home,

  78. I'm thankful that you're just... taking this

  79. moment to listen to the word, to be in worship,

  80. to refuel for the week. In Jesus' name we pray.

  81. Amen. And so let's look at this passage of abiding

  82. in prayer, abiding in me. I am the vine, you

  83. are the branches. It's out of John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  84. We're going to be reading out of verses 3 to

  85. 5, if you'd like to stand while we read the scripture.

  86. It might look a little bit different. I'll be

  87. reading a different version this morning. It's

  88. the NRSVUE. I don't even remember what the U

  89. and the E stand for. Updated edition of the scripture.

  90. So John chapter 15, verses 3 to 5, it says, You

    John 15:3–5

  91. have already been cleansed by the word that I

  92. have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in

  93. you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by

  94. itself, unless it abides in the vine. Neither

  95. can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine,

  96. you are the branches. Those who abide in me,

  97. and I in them, bear much fruit. Because apart

  98. from me, you can do nothing. Amen? Let's have

  99. a seat. So just like I mentioned that a relationship

  100. takes time, it takes consistency, there's a deeper

  101. relationship that is a result of that. Abiding

  102. in Jesus Christ takes time, and it takes consistency

  103. so that you could see results. And eventually,

  104. this scripture talks about the results being

  105. the fruits of the Spirit, right? And so we see

  106. prayer in our lives as very different. And I

  107. was going to do this at the end, but I kind of

  108. want to do it now so that we could kind of get

  109. an idea of where prayer lies in our lives. I

  110. asked a couple people this week. how often do

  111. you pray? Some said, not often. Some said, at

  112. meals. Some said, usually when I need something.

  113. Some said, always. And when I asked, how do you

  114. pray? Other people said, with their eyes closed.

  115. Some people said, I'm just thinking it all the

  116. time. Others said that they kneel. on their bed

  117. that's how we learned to pray with my mom we

  118. kneeled on our bed we crossed our hands and we

  119. said our prayers at night but the the word of

  120. God says to pray without ceasing right and so

  121. it's not about how we're praying it's that it's

  122. a part of our lives that we're doing this thing

  123. to have a constant relationship that we're doing

  124. this thing that is causing us to grow right And

  125. so we see in Psalms, there's so many different

  126. examples of prayers in the Psalms. One of my

  127. favorites, and I'm going to get to this activity

  128. that I want to do with you guys, is Psalms 139.

  129. You could open any Psalms and it's a prayer,

  130. right? You have searched me, Lord, and you know

  131. me. You know when I sit and when I rise, you

  132. perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my

  133. going out and my going in, my lying down, my

  134. standing up. You're familiar with all of my ways.

  135. Where can I go from your spirit? Where can I

  136. flee from you, your presence? For you created

  137. my inmost being. You know me. You knit me together

  138. in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am

  139. fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are

  140. wonderful, and I know that fully well. Doesn't

  141. this sound like a prayer that's super connected?

  142. It sounds pretty intimate, right? Man, you know

  143. who I am. You formed me in my mother's womb.

  144. You know how many hairs are on my head. That's

  145. such an intimate prayer. It's at the end of Psalms,

  146. and I don't know if I've ever looked at Psalms

  147. and said, you know, Psalms is a little, it's

  148. a little like in this. Verse 1, it starts, like,

  149. building. It's Psalms 139, so I just wonder if

  150. this relationship gradually grew and grew and

  151. grew. Just like maybe our prayers might be formal

  152. in the beginning, but then sometimes the prayers

  153. are so messy, and they're so, like, tears are

  154. coming out of our eyes, we're on our knees, we're

  155. sobbing. And guess what that means? That there's

  156. intimacy. That there's been a relationship that

  157. has been established. That you know that God

  158. knows your heart. That you know that God knows

  159. what you're going through in that moment, right?

  160. So there's this sense of relationship. And there's

  161. this sense of he knows who I am. He knows what

  162. I'm going through. It's okay if it's an ugly

  163. cry prayer, you know? It's okay. So I want you

  164. guys to close your eyes real quick. And Pastor

  165. Greg and I have talked about, and I know... Jen,

  166. you've talked about many ways to pray, like examples

  167. of prayer, praying with the finger process, how

  168. you pray for others, praying inwardly, outwardly.

  169. And this is just a tiny practice of a prayer.

  170. So I want everybody to close your eyes. And this

  171. is prayer of the four points of the cross and

  172. the center. And so with our eyes closed, we're

  173. going to think of a moment where we would need

  174. to kneel. at the bottom of the cross, where we

  175. might be praying for a need. It could be a physical

  176. need. It could be a financial need. It could

  177. be a need for God to fill voids. It could be

  178. a need to fill emptiness. Whatever need that

  179. you might have, you're at the foot of the cross.

  180. You're kneeling down before him, heart open,

  181. maybe hands down, maybe postured all the way

  182. down. You're at the foot of the cross. And there's

  183. this prayer for need. And you're just asking

  184. in this moment, maybe do a little something for

  185. me, Lord. Hear my cry. Answer this prayer. And

  186. then another way that we approach God is moving

  187. up to the center of the cross, to God's heart,

  188. in which we give gratitude. We give thanks. There's

  189. different parts of the Bible that says give thanks

  190. in everything, and so we're in this middle process

  191. of the heart of God, and we're in gratitude.

  192. We're giving praise. We're giving thanks, even

  193. in the midst of difficulty. There's a sense of

  194. gratitude right into the center, into the heart

  195. of God, until we know that maybe things aren't

  196. going great, but you know what? Praise him anyway.

  197. Those moments that it's like there's something

  198. about the name of Jesus. And maybe Jesus is all

  199. you need to say, and that's a prayer, Jesus.

  200. And then we focus outwardly. And with your hands

  201. closed, if you have space, just open your arms

  202. from right to left. And this prayer goes outward.

  203. It goes towards others. It goes towards community.

  204. It goes for family, friends, leaders. This prayer

  205. is outward. It's for others, for God to fill

  206. them, for God to help them to grow. For God to

  207. do something for them, to bless them. Because

  208. prayers and blessing others is such a beautiful

  209. thing. And then we focus on moving upward to

  210. the head of the cross. And in this moment is

  211. a moment where you're focusing on always thinking

  212. about God. Where your mind and your thoughts

  213. are aligned. Your prayers are abiding in him.

  214. Your prayers are... consistently with him your

  215. prayers are always your thoughts are always in

  216. the name of Jesus and it's not this radical time

  217. that you're taking apart it's those inward thoughts

  218. it's those prayers it's those moments in your

  219. office while you're driving when you're trying

  220. to stay sane when you're trying to remember that

  221. Christ is in you and you don't want to cause

  222. harm or maybe you're a little bit holy a little

  223. bit hood but there's something inside of you

  224. and your thoughts that say Center me, Father

  225. God, right? In this very moment, it's a thought.

  226. It's those prayers that are thoughts. And maybe

  227. we practice this on a regular basis. Maybe we

  228. do different points of the cross at different

  229. times. But you can open your eyes now. And that's

  230. just one example of how you can pray because

  231. there's so many, right? There's so many. But

  232. when we're praying the cross, our focus and our

  233. center is in Jesus Christ. Amen? So as we move

  234. a little bit further into this scripture, where

  235. we see him saying that I am the vine and you

  236. are the branches, I talked a little bit about

  237. the context of the scripture being Jesus was

  238. about to leave the disciples. There are some

  239. moments in scripture that said Judas was already

  240. out the door when this scripture, when Jesus

  241. was talking to the disciples. The cross, the

  242. story of the cross, it was right around the corner.

  243. He was about to be deceived. He was about to

  244. go to the cross. And he's sitting down with his

  245. disciples. And he's saying, I'm about to leave

  246. you. I've already shown you. You know, verse

  247. 3 says, I've already told you that I'm the light.

  248. I've already cleansed you by the word that I

  249. have spoken to you. But now I want to show you

  250. and tell you that I'm about to leave you. But

  251. I need you to know that you still have to abide

  252. in me. You still have to stay connected to me.

  253. You still have to find ways to see me without

  254. seeing me. Can you imagine being a disciple in

  255. that table in that moment? All we get is the

  256. stories, right? I was sharing last week that

  257. I went to Greece and I got to see where the Apostle

  258. Paul stood after... 50 years of service after

  259. his conversion, four to six years. My brother

  260. and I were thinking the conversion came about

  261. four to six years after Jesus Christ had died.

  262. 50 years later, he's still traveling and talking

  263. about Jesus. The disciples were there and what

  264. we get are stories. And so don't you think we

  265. have to dive in a little bit more to abide in

  266. Jesus when we didn't even get to see him? Thank

  267. God for people. that are Jesus in the flesh for

  268. us sometimes, the people that come with their

  269. torches and their lights in the midst of our

  270. darkness, Jesus in the flesh are those people

  271. that come before us in those moments of critical

  272. care. And thank God for those moments, right?

  273. But the context is that he's sitting there with

  274. the disciples, and he's about to be crucified,

  275. and he's telling them, remember me, stay connected

  276. to me, abide in me. The vine is the source of

  277. life. He's the vine. We're the branches. The

  278. branches is a sense of dependency on the vine.

  279. And the result of a beautiful vine that's connected,

  280. a beautiful branch that's connected to the vine

  281. is fruit. So what does it mean to abide? Abide

  282. comes from the Greek word meno, M -E -N -O. It

  283. means to remain, to stay. to dwell. And doesn't

  284. all of that sound like a relationship? You're

  285. staying, you're dwelling, you're abiding. So

  286. this relationship gets stronger in staying connected

  287. to the source. The vine is the source, the branches

  288. is our dependency, the fruit is the result. So

  289. when we remain and we stay and we dwell, there's

  290. this complete reliance to the vine. It's not

  291. a self -effort. Abiding, can you come up real

  292. quick? Abiding literally means to like stand

  293. next to, to stay, right? Am I less standing next

  294. to you if I do more, if I'm going all over the

  295. Quad Cities or all over wherever I decide to

  296. go and do ministry? Does that make me less standing

  297. next to you if I'm doing more? Is it a trick

  298. question? It's less together if I go and I do

  299. more. We're less together, right? You can have

  300. a seat. Abiding in Jesus doesn't mean that we

  301. have to go all the way around the world and do

  302. more, even though we might have a calling for

  303. that. The Word of God tells us that abiding in

  304. him is just being near him. It's being next to

  305. him. It's dwelling. It's staying. It's staying

  306. connected to him. Do you feel like a branch gets

  307. disconnected from the tree and it grows more?

  308. Does it grow more when it gets disconnected?

  309. Santos, you trim trees all the time. When you

  310. cut off a branch from the tree and you lay it

  311. there, what do you wait for it to do sometimes

  312. before you pick it up and you take it out? You

  313. wait for it to what? You wait for it to die and

  314. dry. Because it's lighter that way, right? Does

  315. the branch have life after you cut it off? It

  316. dries out. One time I pulled out my huge sunflower

  317. plant because my neighbor had been asking for

  318. one. They just took over my yard one time, so

  319. I pulled it out, and he said, I'm going to dig

  320. a hole, I'm going to put it in there, and I'm

  321. going to water it. And so I laid three big sunflower

  322. plants on his yard. He didn't dig the hole. He

  323. didn't plant them. And he didn't water them.

  324. And what do you think they did? They just died.

  325. They withered away. And they died. And nothing

  326. happened. And I picked them up and threw them

  327. with the rest of the weeds in the bushes. And

  328. I told him, you asked for these, but I had plenty

  329. more to give to him, so I wasn't too worried

  330. about it. But nothing happened, right? It withered

  331. away, and it died. So abiding in Jesus doesn't

  332. mean that you have to disconnect from him to

  333. go do the things and go and stay busy. It means

  334. that you stay connected in prayer. When I say

  335. abiding today, let's think of me saying abiding

  336. in prayer, right? And so I know we always say

  337. take out your phones, but let's take our phones

  338. out real quick if you have one. What's your battery

  339. life at? Everybody check their battery life.

  340. Yell it out. Who forgot to charge their phone

  341. last night? What's yours at? 49. Ani, what's

  342. yours at? Not bad. Who charged their phones and

  343. they've only been on it a couple of seconds or

  344. minutes this morning? Mine's at 99, miraculously.

  345. It's never at 99. If we take our phone and we

  346. charge it, what is it doing? Obviously, it's

  347. what? It's charging, right? If we take our spiritual

  348. connection, our branch, and we connect it to

  349. the vine, what happens? We charge. We gain strength.

  350. We gain this sense of confidence in our steps

  351. in Jesus Christ, right? And maybe that leads

  352. to sharing Jesus with others. Maybe it leads

  353. to bringing others to Christ. Maybe it leads

  354. to planting a seed somewhere. Maybe it leads

  355. to us not yelling at somebody when we really

  356. wanted to or not having road rage. Just for that

  357. moment when we're connected to the source, your

  358. phone is charging. It's gaining strength, right?

  359. Because we use it all day long. Once we disconnect

  360. it, what happens? The battery life starts going

  361. down. Depending on what you use your phone for,

  362. you might have to recharge it by noon. Some of

  363. us by 10. Some of us don't even have to recharge

  364. it. I know you. Yours is probably disconnected

  365. at 6 and it's back in by 7. But whatever we're

  366. using our phones for, however long that battery

  367. life is, it's good for that, right? And then

  368. it depends on how many apps you have on it, what

  369. you're using it for, how many photos you have,

  370. what your data is. So imagine the phone and the

  371. apps and the data being all of the things that

  372. we do in our day. All of the busy things. Are

  373. we still connected when we're doing all of the

  374. busy things? Do we still have the battery and

  375. the energy and the source? Yeah. It's charged.

  376. So it might get depleted, and like I said, whenever

  377. it gets depleted, what do we do? We plug it back

  378. in. And when we plug it back in, what happens?

  379. It recharges. So if we're trying to go through

  380. our day without being connected to the source

  381. and recharging, and we get to the end and we're

  382. drained, and we don't plug back in, what happens?

  383. We're going to be drained. The phone's not going

  384. to come on. The branches are going to die. So

  385. when we're connected to the source, we're connected

  386. in ways that are consistently always thinking

  387. upwardly. We're in prayer. Our thoughts are in

  388. prayer. So why should we be connected? Why do

  389. we need to recharge? Well, we want to bear fruit.

  390. What are the fruits of the Spirit? Ani, some

  391. of them? I would always talk to them. Christina?

  392. Love, joy, patience, kindness. Any more fruits?

  393. Self -control is in there. We abide in Jesus

  394. Christ. We stay connected to the source because

  395. we want to bear fruit. We want to have the fruits

  396. of the Spirit. And so we stay connected. I think

  397. that one of the biggest flexes that we can have

  398. in life is spiritual growth. Spiritual growth

  399. needs to natural maturity. You start acting differently.

  400. You start responding differently. You start letting

  401. things that used to bother you not bother you

  402. so much. So one of the biggest flexes in life

  403. is spiritual growth. And how do you get to spiritual

  404. growth? Relationship building, prayer, abiding,

  405. your thoughts always in Jesus Christ, right?

  406. So why do we abide to have these fruits? Because

  407. we're being obedient. Because in bearing fruit,

  408. we're bearing witness to Jesus Christ. This verse

  409. goes on to say that apart from him, we're nothing.

  410. I'm going to read it one more time. This part

  411. on the bottom, verse 5, it says, Those who abide

  412. in me and I in him bear much fruit, because apart

  413. from me, you can do nothing. For me, I'm going

  414. to go into a little step deeper. When I read

  415. this scripture, I think about how there's people

  416. that do good because of morals and values, and

  417. they're doing. They're doing all of the things,

  418. all of the good things. But this scripture says,

  419. without me. You can do nothing, so all of those

  420. things have to be connected to a source. They

  421. have to be connected to a spiritual source in

  422. Jesus Christ to be doing all of the things because

  423. of him and in him. So when we're doing the good

  424. works, when we're doing the things that Jesus

  425. has called us to do, to love our neighbor, as

  426. simple as that, it doesn't take money. It doesn't

  427. take action, per se. It doesn't take a lot of

  428. thought to love your neighbor. But does it cost

  429. a little bit of sacrifice? Does it cost a little

  430. bit of maybe selflessness? Yeah. Because we're

  431. doing the things that bear witness to Jesus Christ

  432. and seeing those fruits of the Spirit. So when

  433. we're disconnected, when that branch is cut off

  434. and it withers away, when your phone doesn't

  435. have battery life, Man, I know some of us are

  436. like, where can I connect my phone? Some people

  437. go and buy a charger because they forgot their

  438. charger, right? How many of you have stopped

  439. at the gas station, Walgreens, to buy another

  440. connector, another device, because you need that

  441. phone? So let me ask you something. I know I've

  442. related a lot to the phone and disconnect and

  443. charging, but what happens when our spirit is

  444. in critical condition? What happens when our

  445. spirit is in critical condition? Have you ever

  446. gone to the hospital to visit someone in critical

  447. condition? It's sad. You're praying for them,

  448. right? But what are they connected to? Anybody?

  449. Machines? What else? Life support? Anything else?

  450. IVs? Fluids? There's maybe two, three different

  451. IVs. Heart rates? They're checking, they're monitoring

  452. everything, right? They're in critical condition,

  453. but they're still connected. When our spirit

  454. is in critical condition and we ignore that,

  455. we don't get IV fluids. We're just in this sense

  456. of apathy, in this sense of stillness, this plateau.

  457. There's no growth. We're drained. We're in critical

  458. condition. We need to connect to the source.

  459. And in those moments, the easiest thing that

  460. you could do sometimes is just say, Jesus, I

  461. need you. So when we're disconnected and that

  462. branch withers away, there's spiritual dryness.

  463. There's purposelessness. Like, did I say that?

  464. Purposelessness. We feel purposeless. There's

  465. loss of passion. Maybe we feel anxiety. Maybe

  466. we're feeling distant. We feel doubt. Our calling

  467. and what we're doing for others, like all these

  468. doubts fill in. We're busy. We fill our life

  469. with busy work. We're doing the things, but we

  470. don't feel connected. We could even be coming

  471. to church. We could be doing spiritual work,

  472. and we could still be disconnected. I went to

  473. a church one time, and I saw that a family came

  474. in. The mom was on one side. The son and the

  475. daughter walked in, and the son was trying to

  476. have them go sit by the mom, but the daughter

  477. -in -law wanted to go sit on another side of

  478. the church. And I watched as she went to the

  479. other side of the church, and she knelt and she

  480. prayed. I don't know what was going on with the

  481. family, you know, mother and daughter -in -law

  482. issues, right? According to scripture, if there's

  483. something going on with your... brother or your

  484. sister, God isn't hearing your prayers. If there's

  485. a spiritual disconnect where you can't have forgiveness

  486. and you can't go with, and I'm going to tell

  487. you, forgiveness doesn't mean that you have to

  488. go to the person. Forgiveness means that in your

  489. heart of hearts, you've let go, right? But I'm

  490. saying sometimes what looks good when we're doing

  491. all of the things doesn't necessarily mean that

  492. we're connected. Maybe there's some things that

  493. need to happen in between. So how do we abide

  494. in closing? We stay in constant prayer. Practice

  495. praying the cross, the four points of the cross,

  496. the center, whatever you need to practice in

  497. prayer. Say in his word, the word of God says,

  498. your word is a lamp unto my feet. And just stay

  499. connected. Refuel. Re -energize. Hang out with

  500. other Christians alike. Amen? All right, let's

  501. pray. Father God, we just thank you so much that

  502. you are the source that we connect to, that you

  503. can refill us every single day, every single

  504. hour, every single minute. I pray that you continue

  505. to allow us to bear fruits, that the fruits of

  506. the Spirit continue to come out of us, that we

  507. live outwardly towards you, Lord, so that others

  508. can see your light in us. In Jesus' name we pray.

  509. Amen.
