  1. And welcome to those people who are joining us from

  2. whatever Latin name, whatever Spanish-speaking country you're from. We blog

  3. now in 13... We were fasting this week. Who enjoyed

  4. fasting this week? Over half the church prayed and fasted

  5. this week. I was blown away by the number of

  6. people who were on the call on Tuesday night and

  7. Thursday night as we fasted. Thank you for fasting. But

  8. I want you to know it's not finished. I don't

  9. mean the fasting. I mean the impact of the fasting.

  10. It's not, okay, we finished fasting, but God hasn't finished

  11. his work. He hasn't stopped. We've prayed. It's like dropping

  12. a stone into a steel pond. The stone has been dropped,

  13. but the ripples are still running. God is still at work.

  14. And I sense in my spirit there's somebody who's got

  15. a blinding headache today. If that's you, would you stand?

  16. And other people who are doing legal things today, this week.

  17. There's one or two people in the room who've got

  18. legal things that need to be signed. I just want

  19. to pray for you. I'm not going to call you out,

  20. but I sense there's some people who are going to

  21. sign some legal paperwork this week. There's people with blinding headaches.

  22. If that's you at home, please stand because I want

  23. to pray because I believe God wants to heal people today.

  24. God is a healing God. God is able to do

  25. immeasurably more than we ask or imagine. Father, I pray,

  26. Lord God, right now for those people who are standing. Lord,

  27. if it's a headache, Lord, would you put your finger

  28. right on where the pain is coming? Lord, would you

  29. take away the blockage Would you take away the pressure point,

  30. Lord God? Father, would you loosen and free everything that

  31. needs to flow in Jesus' name, we pray. Amen. And

  32. Father God, I pray for those who are signing paperwork,

  33. Lord God, signing legal paperwork this week. Father, I pray that, Lord,

  34. it would be a joy rather than the pain. It

  35. would be a privilege and a pleasure rather than something

  36. to worry about. Father, I pray that those people who

  37. are signing paperwork would step into freedom and a new

  38. season in Jesus' mighty name. Amen. Amen. So, thank you. So,

  39. you've picked a nation. Thank you for praying. Thank you

  40. for fasting. Also, this week, we started blogging in another

  41. couple of languages. Because we are a multinational church, multilingual church,

  42. we started blogging in Greek this week, and soon to

  43. be followed by Portuguese. Thank you. So, and I'm going

  44. to do something now. I'm going to really test my

  45. memory now. Morning True. Number one Pekingese belong guard is here.

  46. You're probably wondering what on earth I said. But we

  47. are blogging in Pidgin English. It's a language I used

  48. to speak 30 plus years ago. I was a math teacher.

  49. I don't know whether you recognize a teacher in me,

  50. but I was a math teacher and one of the

  51. schools I taught in, in Papua New Guinea, I had

  52. 38 different languages in the class. So I got each

  53. of them to teach me how to say good morning

  54. in a different way. And every week I do it

  55. in a different language. I've forgotten most of them now.

  56. But anyway, so children, you're staying in, but I've got

  57. some activities for you too. Today I want to speak

  58. about living a holy life every day. Now, I want

  59. you to think about your worst day this week or

  60. your worst moment this week. When you did something or

  61. you said something and you thought, I hope nobody else

  62. sees this. Children, I'm just asking you to look at

  63. your parents now and just remind them about something maybe

  64. they did or something they said. Imagine dropping a plate

  65. of something that you prepared all over the floor. You

  66. probably said something. I was driving somewhere this week and

  67. somebody pulled out in front of me unexpectedly without me

  68. waving them in. I had to brake quite hard. Anybody

  69. else feel like that? Yes, thank you for being honest.

  70. You know, the people do it. Thank you, Rob. Rob's

  71. being honest there. Living a holy life every day. So

  72. I was in a queue in a... I'm not proposing

  73. or advertising one brand over another, but I was in

  74. a queue in Waitrose. And we went downstairs to pay

  75. for the car park, and there was a queue to

  76. pay for the car park. And there I was thinking,

  77. I'm in a hurry. Come on, come on. And then

  78. I realized the lady at the front was struggling to

  79. pay for the bill. In the end, she gave up

  80. and stepped away and joined the back of the queue.

  81. She was standing behind me. Now, here's the lady who

  82. was causing the blockage for me, and now she's standing

  83. behind me. And I felt humbled. I thought, okay, I was,

  84. what are you doing? Hurry up, come on. I'm sure

  85. nobody else does that, do you? Am I the only

  86. one here? You have a hurry sickness? You get in,

  87. you know? Yeah, Juliet always does. Anyway, I felt in

  88. my spirit, Okay. Turned and had a conversation with her.

  89. She said, I'm trying to put some money in the machine,

  90. but I can't see anywhere to put mine. I said,

  91. this machine doesn't take money, madam. You need a barcode.

  92. And I had some extra barcodes. So I turned and

  93. I said to her, here you are. You can use

  94. the same machine and you can use that to pay.

  95. I had an opportunity to bless her. And it turned

  96. from to blessing. Just a simple blessing. She said, why

  97. would you do that? Let me give you the money.

  98. I said, no, no. Just be blessed. Living a holy

  99. life every day. 1 Peter 1, 15 and 16. Just

  100. as he who called you is holy, so be holy

  101. in all that you do. For it is written, be

  102. holy because I am holy. Now, what is holiness? Holiness,

  103. you ought to be able to notice. It ought to

  104. be different. If we are a holy people, it ought

  105. to show. It ought to show in our attitudes, in

  106. our language, in what we do. And if it doesn't,

  107. we need to pay attention. I'm not going to go

  108. on the guilt trip here. It's not about me saying,

  109. you're not good enough. That's not where I'm going. I'm

  110. just saying, okay, we can be changed from within because

  111. he is holy. Notice, number one, it's in all that

  112. you do. If your house, if your spiritual home has

  113. rooms in it, maybe when you invite people round to

  114. your house at home, you have to tidy things up.

  115. And there's a space, maybe it's under the stairs, maybe

  116. it's a cupboard that you just kind of shove everything

  117. in before they come round, just so the place looks tidy. No,

  118. you don't do that? Yeah? But I'm talking about your

  119. spiritual home now, not the house. And children are smiling

  120. here because they're looking at their mums and dads saying,

  121. we know you do that, mum. We know you do that, dad.

  122. We've seen you do it. And sometimes we've even been

  123. part of it when mum said, come on, clear the table,

  124. put the stuff in, just put it anywhere. But I

  125. want to talk about your spiritual home. So if your

  126. body is different rooms, what is the room that you

  127. wouldn't take someone to? What is the room under the

  128. stairs where you shove everything in that you don't want

  129. to talk about? Now people are looking around now. It's

  130. a bit ouchy. Peter said, be holy. Be holy. In

  131. all that you do. Not just on Sundays, but on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays,

  132. and Saturdays. In your life group. Worship is good. Be holy,

  133. not just when you lift hands up and feel good,

  134. but be holy at one o'clock in the afternoon when

  135. you're feeling stressed at work. Maybe when something's happened on

  136. the commute to work. You know, some of us treat holiness...

  137. as something that's for the special people. It's for all.

  138. It's for you and me. It doesn't matter how good

  139. we are, because we will never justify being saved and

  140. being redeemed by God. Not us. We will not justify it.

  141. Christ justifies it. He is the perfect sacrifice. And so

  142. I want to give you a very clear picture, children

  143. as well, that holiness is not a ladder you climb.

  144. It's not points that you score. It's the life of

  145. God flowing through you, saying yes to God every day.

  146. So holiness begins with who is God. It doesn't begin

  147. with who we are. It begins with who is God.

  148. Isaiah saw the Lord high and lifted up, and the

  149. seraphim cried, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty, says

  150. that in Isaiah 6.3. His first response was not a program,

  151. was not self-improvement. He said, woe is me. This is

  152. where Simon ended last week. Woe is me. I am ruined.

  153. Then the live coal touched his lips and his guilt

  154. was taken away. Holiness means we're set apart. It means

  155. that there ought to be some of the goodness of

  156. God and the character and nature of God that shines

  157. in us and through us. A.W. Tozer, I love him,

  158. I've got a number of books by him on my shelf,

  159. said that what comes into our minds when we think

  160. about God is the most important thing about us. A

  161. small view of God produces a casual view of sin.

  162. A great view of God produces a glad and reverent

  163. and holy life. Romans 12 verse 1, offer your bodies

    Romans 12:1

  164. as a living sacrifice. holy, and pleasing to God. I

  165. don't know whether you're the kind of person who looks

  166. in the mirror every morning and goes, there's another wrinkle,

  167. there's another gray hair, or there's a spot. God loves us.

  168. All of those things. Some of us don't like them ourselves.

  169. We want things removed and we want to colour our

  170. hair I'm not saying that's right or wrong I'm just

  171. saying that's sometimes the way we look at ourselves we

  172. look at ourselves as being imperfect and we want to

  173. sort some of that out you know that's why the

  174. beauty much money but God looks at us and says

  175. you're wonderful you're wonderfully made you are precious and special

  176. and unique there is no one like you. And maybe

  177. one or two of the children went, yes, that's true.

  178. There's no one like my mum. There's no one like

  179. my dad. Romans 12, 1. Offer your bodies as a

  180. living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your

  181. true and proper worship. Holiness is a daily surrender. Not

  182. just once in a while, not just when we feel

  183. like it, And it starts here. It starts with the

  184. renewing of our minds. It goes on to say in

  185. Romans 12 too, how we do not conform to the

  186. pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing

  187. of your minds. If we've got it wrong, if we've

  188. said something wrong, if we've done something wrong, quick response.

  189. Just say sorry. Just turn to God in a moment.

  190. Just find a space. Just go into a corner and say,

  191. sorry God, I shouldn't have said that. Keep short account

  192. with God. He is faithful to forgive us, and he's

  193. merciful to us. His compassions are new every morning. We're

  194. reminded of that in Lamentations 3. Holiness is not something

  195. we achieve perfectly overnight. It's a work in progress. It's

  196. a direction for our journey. It's a direction for our lifestyles.

  197. So holiness is something we can see in the ordinary.

  198. We read, if you like the book of Daniel, I

  199. love the book of Daniel. Anybody else like the book

  200. of Daniel? Yeah, great. I love the fact that it

  201. makes it the real world. Daniel operated at work. Daniel

  202. took his faith, he took his faith to places where

  203. you and I probably wouldn't. I don't really want to

  204. end up in the fiery furnace because I've done something

  205. at work, but it happens. You know, holiness is not

  206. tested in the prayer meeting. Holiness is tested in our

  207. everyday living, in the places when no one else is watching,

  208. or maybe some people are watching, maybe some of your children,

  209. and I want to include the children in this because

  210. you do see what goes on at home. One of

  211. the things, I have the privilege of travelling from time

  212. to time and staying with people, and sometimes people say,

  213. I'll put you up in a hotel. I say, no, no, no,

  214. please don't put me up in a hotel. I'd rather

  215. stay with you if that's okay. And it's not just

  216. about saving money. It's also I want to spend some

  217. time with them. And you start to see the way

  218. people live their lives. So my first challenge, I've got

  219. two challenges today, is how is your holiness? What's it

  220. like at work? What's it like at home? What about online?

  221. What about our wallets? What about our expense claims? What

  222. about our appraisals if we have to give appraisals to people?

  223. What about standing at the coffee machine and having a chat?

  224. Do we jump into gossip and start to criticize people?

  225. Whatever we do, work at it with all of our

  226. hearts just as unto the Lord. Colossians chapter 3 verse 23.

    Colossians 3:23

  227. Are we patient with one another? I wasn't patient in

  228. that queue trying to pay for pay for the parking.

  229. I wasn't patient at all. And sometimes we're not patient

  230. because we're in too much of a hurry. Sometimes we

  231. need to give ourselves a little bit more time to

  232. do things. And we'll do them better, and we'll notice things.

  233. I think I've told you this story before, but it's

  234. relevant here. I did a course, and part of the course,

  235. there was some homework between the different modules. And one

  236. of the pieces of homework And I had a choice

  237. of things, but one of them was to sit and

  238. look at a tree for 15 minutes and just enjoy

  239. the tree. If at any point you started thinking about

  240. your to-do list or started thinking about something else or

  241. work or something that was going on, you started the

  242. clock again. You had to focus on the tree. Do

  243. you know what? I tried for two weeks. I couldn't

  244. do it. I couldn't do it. So I'm in too

  245. much of a hurry. It's a great hurriness test. So

  246. what's the state of your relationships at work? What about

  247. at home? Is there some things that go unsaid? Who

  248. said it? Was it Elton John? Sorry seems to be

  249. the hardest word. How many people like saying sorry? One

  250. or two people. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah? Yeah? I

  251. don't want to say sorry, but you know what? Sorry

  252. is a good word. Sorry, I didn't mean that. Sorry,

  253. I didn't mean to say that. Sorry, I didn't mean

  254. to punch you in the face. Don't know whether it's

  255. ever happened. I've certainly elbowed somebody in the face. I

  256. just turned around and, you know, it just caught somebody

  257. on the tube on Monday this week. So this is

  258. a real fresh story, you know. It was a person

  259. who was about this tall, so I wasn't kind of

  260. doing this. I just turned around. I had bags in

  261. my hand and didn't see them. At least I didn't

  262. break a nose or cause a nosebleed, thank goodness. Holiness

  263. is spirit empowerment, not self-empowerment. We live in a world

  264. where there's a lot of self, self, self. This is

  265. how you do it, self-improvement schemes. I want to encourage you,

  266. if you're focused on self-improvement, Yes, and we can be improved.

  267. Don't do it on your own. Do it with God's

  268. help because he will shape you and mold you and

  269. me in ways that we cannot even ask or imagine.

  270. Here's the good news. God never asks us to manufacture

  271. holiness in our own strength. Walk by the Spirit. Do

  272. not gratify the desires of your flesh. It says that

  273. in Galatians 5.16. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience.

  274. I'm pausing here because I want you to take it in. Kindness.

  275. Some people know this off by heart. That's great. You

  276. know the word goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Fantastic. Any

  277. one of those fruits will influence just a little bit

  278. of holiness, give people a little glimpse of God. If

  279. you've brought fruit at this time of year, my There's

  280. often raspberries in our fridge. Keris will tell you this.

  281. They're often moldy. Because we start eating them and they

  282. end up in the back. There's something fresh about holiness.

  283. In the Old Testament, we hear about how manna was

  284. provided on a daily basis. Bread was provided. Food was

  285. provided on a daily basis. It did not keep. It

  286. went bad very quickly. Why? You know, I believe the

  287. same with holiness. I think actually the more holy we are,

  288. the more we can pour out. And actually it's holy

  289. living that people will notice and they will see. 1

    1 Thessalonians 5:23

  290. Thessalonians 5 verses 23 and 24. May God himself, the

  291. God of peace, sanctify through and through. The one who

  292. calls you is faithful and he will do it. I

  293. want you to notice here, who does the hard work here?

  294. It's God. It's God. Our part is to stay close

  295. to him, catch what he's trying to say, be surrendered

  296. to him. Now, do you know what? When somebody tells

  297. you this is the way you should do it and

  298. you think you should do it differently, there's a fight. No, no,

  299. I don't know whether the parents and children will go there.

  300. Don't do it that way. Don't eat your dinner like that.

  301. Don't hold your fork like this. But I like eating

  302. like this, mummy. I like eating. I like balancing peas

  303. on the end of my knife. I like sticking my

  304. knife in. I'm not recommending this, children. I'm not even

  305. going to complete the sentence. Do you know what? Sometimes

  306. we have to submit. Sometimes we have to yield for

  307. the greater good.

  308. Now, for

  309. the greater good means we make less of ourself and

  310. more of others. So, I'm going to ask you just

  311. to consider this challenge. as I bring what I'm going

  312. to share to a close. And it's this. You want

  313. to bring the challenge up? What would change on a

  314. Monday morning... if I treated my workplace... or school... or university...

  315. or college... or wherever you spend a large part of

  316. your week? What would change in my Monday morning... if

  317. I treated that place... as holy ground. A place to

  318. be holy. Now I'll be honest, I'm going to go there.

  319. Some of you and some of us don't like our bosses.

  320. Some of us don't like our teachers. Some of us

  321. definitely don't like the bus driver who drives us to

  322. college or to work once in a while. He's always Mr. Grumpy.

  323. Do you know what? What would change if we treated

  324. those moments as holy and we were willing to be

  325. a lightning rod with God and say, Lord, whatever you

  326. want to release in this moment, at this time, whether

  327. it's just a kind word, whether it's just an open door,

  328. whether it's doing and saying something that you or I

  329. wouldn't normally do or say, that's my reflection moment for you.

  330. But I'm going to start with where we're at. If

  331. you want to work out where you need to go,

  332. the first thing you need to do is to work

  333. out where you are. If you don't know where you are,

  334. you don't know how you're going to get to where

  335. you go. And so I'm just going to ask some questions.

  336. I'm going to ask us to close our eyes. And

  337. this is for people at home, people listening later, people

  338. listening anywhere in the world. And I'd like us to

  339. close our eyes. And that includes the children too now.

  340. And I'm just going to ask a few questions. And

  341. if that's you, would you stand? I'm not going to

  342. call anybody out. I'm not going to say anything else.

  343. But I just sense that God wants to cause us

  344. to step into a holy place. If in the last

  345. week you have said something that has hurt someone and

  346. you haven't sorted it out, would you stand? I'm really

  347. starting with some big ouches. If you said something that

  348. hurt somebody and you haven't resolved it, you haven't sorted

  349. it out, you know it's a loose end, maybe you've

  350. got to, would you stand? Please, eyes are closed. I've

  351. got my eyes closed too. I'm really not that interested.

  352. I just want to pray. But if that's you, would

  353. you stand? If you said something, if you did something

  354. that was not glorifying to God, if we played it

  355. on the video screen right now, you'd be hiding behind

  356. your hands. and you haven't resolved it, unholy living, would

  357. you stand? If in the week ahead you already have

  358. planned something that you would not want to be on

  359. the front page of the local newspaper, because it's not God,

  360. it's you, would you stand? Would you stand? And this

  361. is not a guilt trip, guys. I'm not going there

  362. at all. One final thing. If there's something that's been

  363. on your to-do list for months, if not years, and

  364. you've never got around to it, but you know someone

  365. has been hurt because of it, would you stand? I

  366. thank you for the honesty of the people who are standing. Father,

  367. I want to pray Father, we've messed up. We got

  368. it wrong. Lord, we want to say we're sorry right

  369. now as we stand. But as we stand, Lord, in

  370. saying we're sorry, we say, help, Lord. Help me. Help

  371. me now. Let your holiness flow through me. Let me

  372. make better choices in my talk, in my thinking, in

  373. my payments, in my calendar choices. And fill me, Lord.

  374. with the power of your presence. In Jesus' name. Amen. Now,

  375. I thank you for those who stood. Thank you. It

  376. wasn't easy. It's not an easy thing to do. Julia

  377. said later on, that there was, said earlier on, that

  378. if you need prayer, then please, you know, if the

  379. song that we sung earlier on touched you. We've got

  380. a ministry space just behind the glass doors, so when

  381. we come to the end of the service, if you

  382. need prayer, there'll always be a couple of people out

  383. there ready to pray for you. We're just trying to

  384. make space for God to move. God can move into service,

  385. that's fine. But sometimes people say, yes, but I just

  386. need prayer about this. That's exactly why you've got a

  387. sign behind me on the glass doors that just says

  388. ministry space. So I'm done.
