  1. I want to thank you first of all though for what you do to support what we do at North Greenville University.

  2. I hope you're aware that North Greenville University is one of your three South Carolina Baptist Convention Universities along with Anderson University, Charleston Southern University and North Greenville University.

  3. I just want to thank you for what you do to pray for us, for your giving through the cooperative program which helps support our work on the campus there in Tigerville, South Carolina as we seek to minister to these emerging generations and raise up transformational leaders for church and society.

  4. I cannot thank you enough for that.

  5. By the way, my wife and I and our family were also recipients of your prayer and your giving as we served as your International Mission Board missionaries in the country of Ecuador.

  6. So we thank you for that.

  7. You helped educate our kids while we were there.

  8. You provided a house for us, a car for us, a salary for us and you will never know what that means.

  9. So we are indebted to you both as former missionaries and now teaching on the campus of North Greenville University.

  10. Keep on praying for us.

  11. If you have your Bibles with you this morning, I want us to turn to a text.

  12. It's a bit of a lengthy one, but I do want to read it.

  13. It's found in Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  14. So if you have your copy of God's Word with you this morning, I'm going to begin reading with verse 16 in Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  15. You follow along in your copy of God's Word as I read.

  16. Verse 16 of Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  17. Now, while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols.

  18. So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and devout persons and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.

  19. Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him.

  20. And some said, what does this babbler wish to say?

  21. Others said, he seems to be a preacher of foreign gods because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.

  22. And they took him and they brought him to the Areopagus saying,

  23. may we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting, for you are bringing some strange things to our ears.

  24. We wish to know, therefore, what these things mean.

  25. Now, all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling and hearing something new.

  26. So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus said,

  27. Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious.

  28. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription,

  29. To the unknown God.

  30. What, therefore, you worship as unknown, this I now proclaim to you.

  31. The God who made the world and everything in it, being the Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man,

  32. nor is he served by human hands as though he needed anything,

  33. since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.

  34. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth,

  35. having determined their allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place,

  36. that they should seek God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him,

  37. yet he is not far from each one of us.

  38. For in him we live and move and have our being,

  39. as even some of your own poets have said,

  40. For we are indeed his offspring.

  41. Being then God's offspring,

  42. we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone,

  43. an image formed by the art and imagination of man.

  44. The times of ignorance got overlooked,

  45. but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,

  46. because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness

  47. by a man whom he has appointed,

  48. and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.

  49. Would you pray with me?

  50. Heavenly Father, we are grateful this morning for your word.

  51. We pray now that that which we have read,

  52. written in pen and ink,

  53. might become in these moments truly a living word for us

  54. as your Holy Spirit becomes our teacher.

  55. Father, we commit this time to you,

  56. and we ask you to speak your truth into our hearts,

  57. and we ask this in Jesus' name.

  58. Amen.

  59. Okay, this morning I want to ask you to think about something.

  60. I want to ask you a question.

  61. What do you see?

  62. What do you see when you look around you?

  63. What do you see when you drive through the town of Pickens?

  64. What do you see when you go to Easley?

  65. What do you see when you head toward Anderson or Clemson?

  66. What do you see when you travel down toward Greenville?

  67. What do you see when you look at the communities and the neighborhoods

  68. that are scattered across this part of upstate South Carolina?

  69. Do you see homes?

  70. Do you see businesses?

  71. Do you see schools?

  72. Do you see churches?

  73. Do you see traffic?

  74. Oh boy, don't get me started on that.

  75. Do you see people going to work?

  76. Raising their families?

  77. Going about their daily lives?

  78. What do you see, really?

  79. I want to say to you this morning that one of the most important things that can happen

  80. in the life of a church is for us to begin seeing our community the way that God sees it.

  81. Because if we only see neighborhoods, you know what?

  82. We'll just live in our neighborhoods.

  83. If we only see businesses, we'll just simply work in our businesses.

  84. If we only see schools, we'll just simply send our children to school.

  85. But if we can begin to look at the people around us as a mission field, then church, everything changes.

  86. So this morning, I want you to see and understand that God has not just placed Pickens First Baptist Church and you in the town of Pickens.

  87. God has placed Pickens First Baptist Church and you right squarely in the middle of a mission field.

  88. I want you to see this morning as we especially focus on one group of people who are becoming increasingly visible in the upstate of South Carolina.

  89. And they are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, more popularly known as the Mormons.

  90. Now, by the way, if you encounter some of them, don't ask if they're a Mormon.

  91. That term has gone out of vogue.

  92. They don't like it anymore.

  93. They need to be referred to as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  94. These people are not part of a statistical table.

  95. They are not part of a religious system.

  96. Church members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are people.

  97. They are people who live here.

  98. They are people who work here.

  99. They are people whose children attend school here.

  100. They are people you may encounter in the grocery store or at work or in your neighborhood or maybe even at your door.

  101. As Latter-day Saint missionaries come to your house.

  102. These are people who need to hear the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  103. So we're going to look at Acts chapter 17 today because the Apostle Paul shows us exactly what it looks like when we begin to see our communities the way God sees them.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  104. I have five things I want to share with you this morning very rapidly, very quickly, but I want you to follow along and perhaps even jot these things down in your Bible.

  105. Here's the first thing I want you to see.

  106. We must, as a church, as evangelical Christians, we must begin to see our context, our neighborhoods as a mission field.

  107. Look at Acts chapter 17 again, verse 16.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  108. It says,

  109. Now while Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was provoked within him because he saw that the city was full of idols.

  110. He saw something.

  111. Do you see that?

  112. He saw something.

  113. Now let me tell you something about Athens, and I've been blessed to go there on a couple of different occasions.

  114. Even today, it is a remarkable city.

  115. In Paul's day, it was intellectually sophisticated.

  116. It was culturally influential.

  117. It was filled with history, philosophy, art, religion, learning.

  118. Paul saw all that, but he saw something underneath all of that.

  119. He saw a city full of idols.

  120. He saw people following a false religion.

  121. And I want you to notice something else that's very important.

  122. Paul did not look at Athens and say, oh my goodness, what a terrible place.

  123. He did not say, oh my goodness, these people are beyond hope.

  124. He didn't withdraw from the city.

  125. He didn't simply complain about the culture.

  126. He saw a mission field.

  127. And this is what we must learn to do when we look at our own cities and towns and communities.

  128. When you look at the upstate, do you see a mission field?

  129. I want to tell you, we are blessed to live where we live in this part of the country, right?

  130. It is a beautiful part of the country.

  131. We have strong families here.

  132. We have good churches here.

  133. We have communities that still have a strong Christian influence here.

  134. But we must never, ever confuse the presence of the church with the presence of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the hearts of people.

  135. And we must never assume that just because people seem to be religious that they know Jesus.

  136. That is why Acts chapter 17 is so critically important.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  137. Athens was not an irreligious city.

  138. It was a very religious city.

  139. Deeply religious.

  140. The problem wasn't that people believed nothing about God.

  141. The problem was they believed many things about God.

  142. But they did not know the true God of Scripture.

  143. That ought to make us think carefully, church, about our own mission field.

  144. Because I can promise you, there are people all around you today who are religious.

  145. There are people all around you who talk about God, who talk about Jesus.

  146. There are people who pray.

  147. There are people who read religious books.

  148. There are people who sincerely want to please God.

  149. And yet sincerity is not the same thing as knowing Christ.

  150. And that is why we're focusing this morning particularly on our Latter-day Saint friends and neighbors.

  151. Because they do all of those things.

  152. All of them.

  153. And they are growing.

  154. And this is not something that's happening far away.

  155. It's happening right here.

  156. In fact, according to the Latter-day Saint Church's own current statistics,

  157. there are almost 50,000 Latter-day Saints living in South Carolina,

  158. meeting in more than 90 congregations.

  159. Did you know that in the 50 United States over the last 10 years,

  160. the LDS Church has grown in 49 of those 50 states?

  161. The only exception being the state of California.

  162. And their missionary presence.

  163. Do you know how many Latter-day Saint missionaries there are around the world today?

  164. Anybody want to take a wild guess?

  165. This past month,

  166. the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officially published that they have more than,

  167. listen, 90,000 full-time missionaries.

  168. Do you know how many we have a Southern Baptist?

  169. About 3,500 international and about that number North American.

  170. They have 90,000.

  171. It is the largest missionary force in the world.

  172. Now, there are no definite statistics.

  173. The Church doesn't publish actual numbers of the number of Latter-day Saint missionaries here in South Carolina,

  174. but it is estimated to be somewhere between 300 and 400 of them right here in South Carolina.

  175. That should mean something to us.

  176. Not because we should be afraid.

  177. Not because we should become angry.

  178. Not because we need to start some kind of religious battle.

  179. But because there are Latter-day Saints who are actively seeking to share their understanding of the gospel

  180. with the people in our communities.

  181. And Church, we need to ask ourselves,

  182. Are we going to be willing to share the New Testament gospel,

  183. the biblical gospel,

  184. with them

  185. when they come our way?

  186. You may be aware

  187. that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

  188. is in the process of building

  189. a temple

  190. in Greenville.

  191. The temple is the locus.

  192. It is the center

  193. of Latter-day Saint belief and practice.

  194. This will be the second temple built

  195. in South Carolina.

  196. The other one is in Columbia.

  197. It's going to be built

  198. right in one of the strategic areas of Greenville,

  199. right around Interstate 385

  200. and Roper Mountain Road.

  201. I've seen the artist's rendering of the temple.

  202. It is going to tower over that landscape.

  203. Now,

  204. I understand Pickens

  205. is not Greenville,

  206. but this isn't about Greenville.

  207. This is about the upstate.

  208. Greenville is just the very visible

  209. reminder

  210. that something is happening

  211. in our region.

  212. So when you drive through Greenville

  213. in a year and a half or so

  214. and you see that temple,

  215. please don't just see a building.

  216. See

  217. people.

  218. people who live in the upstate,

  219. people who have families,

  220. people who have hopes and fears

  221. just like you do,

  222. people who want to know God,

  223. people who need the gospel.

  224. So when you see that temple,

  225. I want you to think,

  226. God,

  227. you have put a mission field

  228. right in my

  229. backyard.

  230. That's the first thing

  231. we must understand.

  232. We must begin to see our context

  233. as a mission field.

  234. The second thing,

  235. we have to let

  236. what we see

  237. burden us.

  238. We have to let

  239. what we see

  240. affect us.

  241. Verse 16

  242. of Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  243. when Paul walked through Athens,

  244. it says,

  245. His spirit was

  246. provoked

  247. within him

  248. as he saw

  249. that the city was full of idols,

  250. full of false worship.

  251. What Paul saw

  252. affected him.

  253. His spirit was provoked.

  254. He was troubled.

  255. He was

  256. burdened.

  257. He did not just

  258. simply walk through Athens,

  259. see the false religion,

  260. shake his head,

  261. say how bad it was,

  262. and then go on

  263. with his life.

  264. What he saw

  265. got inside

  266. of him.

  267. That is where

  268. missionary vision

  269. begins.

  270. Not with anger.

  271. Not with a sense

  272. of superiority.

  273. Not with a desire

  274. to win an argument.

  275. But with a burden

  276. for people.

  277. You know,

  278. I can't help

  279. wonder sometimes

  280. if one of the reasons

  281. we don't engage

  282. more of the people

  283. around us

  284. with the gospel

  285. is because

  286. we've never stopped

  287. long enough

  288. to see them

  289. as God

  290. sees them.

  291. What do you see

  292. when you see that

  293. Latter-day Saint missionary

  294. riding his bicycle

  295. through the neighborhood?

  296. What do you see

  297. when you see

  298. that sister missionary

  299. walking through

  300. your neighborhood?

  301. What do you see

  302. when you see

  303. that temple

  304. being built?

  305. Oh, we can see

  306. the signs,

  307. but do we see

  308. the person?

  309. Do we feel

  310. the burden?

  311. Do we wonder

  312. what he believes?

  313. what she believes?

  314. Do we wonder

  315. what they believe

  316. Jesus has done

  317. for them?

  318. Do we wonder

  319. whether they really

  320. understand the gospel

  321. of grace?

  322. Do we wonder

  323. what would happen

  324. to them

  325. if they died tonight?

  326. See, Paul's heart

  327. was troubled

  328. because he knew

  329. that behind

  330. all of those idols

  331. there were people

  332. who were desperately

  333. searching after God,

  334. but they did not

  335. know him.

  336. Do you imagine?

  337. Do you think

  338. maybe that's what

  339. God's wanting to do

  340. in our hearts today?

  341. To give us that burden?

  342. To give us that

  343. feeling of being

  344. provoked in our spirit?

  345. Perhaps God

  346. wants to take something

  347. that we have simply

  348. noticed

  349. and turn it into

  350. something

  351. we really care about.

  352. We're really

  353. burdened about.

  354. You see,

  355. there's a huge

  356. difference between

  357. just saying,

  358. you know what,

  359. there are more

  360. Latter-day Saints

  361. around here than

  362. I've ever seen before.

  363. There's a difference

  364. between saying that

  365. and saying,

  366. you know,

  367. there's a whole lot

  368. more people around

  369. here today

  370. who need Jesus

  371. than I've ever

  372. seen before.

  373. One is merely

  374. an observation.

  375. The other is a burden.

  376. The first produces

  377. mindfulness.

  378. The second produces

  379. mission.

  380. So,

  381. we have to let

  382. what we see

  383. burden us.

  384. Number one,

  385. we have to see

  386. our context

  387. as a mission field.

  388. Number two,

  389. we have to let

  390. what we see

  391. burden us.

  392. Number three,

  393. we then have to

  394. move toward

  395. people.

  396. Notice what

  397. Paul does

  398. with his burden.

  399. It doesn't just

  400. stay within him.

  401. Verse 17 says,

  402. so he reasoned

  403. in the synagogue

  404. with the Jews

  405. and the devout

  406. persons

  407. and in the

  408. marketplace

  409. every day

  410. with those

  411. who happened

  412. to be there.

  413. Paul took

  414. his burden

  415. and he moved

  416. toward people.

  417. He went

  418. where the people

  419. were.

  420. He talked

  421. with people.

  422. He listened

  423. to people.

  424. He engaged

  425. people.

  426. And I want you

  427. to notice

  428. those two little

  429. words,

  430. every day.

  431. Every day.

  432. You see,

  433. Paul did not

  434. treat evangelism

  435. as an occasional

  436. event.

  437. He treated

  438. ordinary,

  439. everyday life,

  440. wherever he

  441. was,

  442. as an opportunity

  443. to have a

  444. gospel conversation

  445. with somebody.

  446. The marketplace

  447. became a mission

  448. field.

  449. The synagogue

  450. became a mission

  451. field.

  452. The streets

  453. became mission

  454. fields.

  455. the places

  456. where people

  457. lived their

  458. ordinary lives

  459. became places

  460. where Paul

  461. talked about

  462. Jesus.

  463. Church,

  464. mission

  465. is not

  466. something we

  467. do somewhere

  468. else.

  469. Mission is

  470. something we

  471. do right

  472. here.

  473. You don't

  474. have to get

  475. on an airplane.

  476. You don't

  477. have to learn

  478. another language.

  479. You do

  480. not have

  481. to go

  482. to another

  483. country.

  484. You may

  485. simply need

  486. to talk

  487. to your

  488. neighbor,

  489. your

  490. co-worker.

  491. Maybe

  492. there's a

  493. Latter-day

  494. saint family

  495. living near

  496. you.

  497. Maybe you

  498. work with

  499. someone who's

  500. a Latter-day

  501. saint.

  502. Maybe your

  503. child has

  504. a classmate

  505. whose family

  506. is Latter-day

  507. saint.

  508. Maybe you

  509. meet a

  510. Latter-day

  511. saint

  512. missionary.

  513. Maybe

  514. the first

  515. step you

  516. need to

  517. take is

  518. not to

  519. give them

  520. an evangelistic

  521. tract.

  522. Maybe it's

  523. not to ask

  524. them if

  525. they're saved.

  526. Maybe it

  527. is simply

  528. to become

  529. their

  530. friend.

  531. Maybe the

  532. first step

  533. is to ask

  534. them questions

  535. questions and

  536. then just

  537. listen to

  538. them.

  539. Hey, would

  540. you tell me

  541. about your

  542. faith?

  543. Would you

  544. tell me what

  545. Jesus means

  546. to you?

  547. I wonder,

  548. what do you

  549. believe happens

  550. when somebody

  551. dies?

  552. How do you

  553. know that you're

  554. right with

  555. God?

  556. What do you

  557. believe Jesus

  558. actually accomplished

  559. on the cross?

  560. those are not

  561. hostile questions,

  562. church.

  563. Those are

  564. loving

  565. questions.

  566. I'm going to

  567. let you in on a

  568. secret this

  569. morning, okay?

  570. It's just

  571. between you and

  572. me so don't

  573. tell anybody.

  574. All right?

  575. Our secret

  576. this morning.

  577. You ready?

  578. Sometimes the

  579. best evangelistic

  580. conversation you

  581. can have with a

  582. Latter-day saint is

  583. for that Latter-day

  584. saint to realize,

  585. oh my goodness,

  586. you know what?

  587. This person I'm

  588. talking to actually

  589. wants to understand

  590. what I believe.

  591. Talk to them.

  592. Move toward them.

  593. Be friends with

  594. them.

  595. Love them.

  596. That's the third

  597. thing.

  598. Number one, I

  599. must see my

  600. context as a

  601. mission field.

  602. Number two, I

  603. must let what I

  604. see burden me.

  605. Number three, I

  606. must move toward

  607. people.

  608. Number four, I

  609. must begin to

  610. understand the

  611. people I'm

  612. trying to reach.

  613. I've got to

  614. understand the

  615. people I'm

  616. trying to reach.

  617. See, Paul didn't

  618. just walk into

  619. Athens and start

  620. shouting.

  621. He didn't just

  622. walk into Athens

  623. and start telling

  624. people how wrong

  625. they were.

  626. No.

  627. He paid attention.

  628. He observed

  629. their culture.

  630. The text says he

  631. had listened to

  632. their philosophers.

  633. He had understood

  634. some of their

  635. poets.

  636. He understood the

  637. people he was

  638. trying to reach

  639. and once he

  640. understood them,

  641. then he was able

  642. to find a point of

  643. connection for the

  644. gospel.

  645. Look at verse 22.

  646. Men of Athens,

  647. I perceive in

  648. every way that you

  649. are very religious.

  650. I need to tell you

  651. something about

  652. Latter-day Saints.

  653. they are some of

  654. the most sincerely

  655. religious people

  656. you will ever meet.

  657. And they are some

  658. of the nicest people

  659. you will ever meet.

  660. They want to please

  661. God.

  662. They want to follow

  663. Jesus.

  664. I can promise you

  665. they are not

  666. knowingly following

  667. a false religion.

  668. religion.

  669. They regard the

  670. Bible along with

  671. the Book of Mormon

  672. and a couple of

  673. other texts as the

  674. Word of God.

  675. They use a lot of

  676. the same vocabulary

  677. we use.

  678. They talk openly

  679. and sincerely about

  680. God, Jesus,

  681. salvation, the

  682. atonement, repentance,

  683. grace, faith, the

  684. gospel, and eternal

  685. life.

  686. Now those words

  687. mean something

  688. radically different

  689. than what we

  690. understand them to

  691. be in that LDS

  692. context.

  693. But they use that

  694. vocabulary.

  695. They want to

  696. please God.

  697. They want to know

  698. God.

  699. They are just

  700. following a false

  701. religion.

  702. That is why we

  703. need to ask

  704. Latter-day Saints

  705. questions.

  706. And then we need

  707. to listen to them.

  708. Not argue with

  709. them.

  710. Not debate

  711. with them.

  712. them.

  713. Just start by

  714. listening to them

  715. so that you can

  716. understand.

  717. I'm going to make

  718. you a promise this

  719. morning.

  720. This is true whether

  721. you're dealing with

  722. a Latter-day Saint or

  723. anybody else.

  724. You will never

  725. effectively be able

  726. to share the gospel

  727. with people that you

  728. have already decided

  729. you know and

  730. understand without

  731. ever having listened

  732. to them.

  733. That's a promise.

  734. I'm going to say

  735. it again.

  736. You will never

  737. effectively share

  738. the gospel with

  739. people that you

  740. have already decided

  741. you understand and

  742. know without ever

  743. having listened to

  744. them.

  745. Paul was effective

  746. because he understood

  747. the people he was

  748. trying to reach.

  749. He took what he

  750. learned as he

  751. listened to them

  752. and then he was

  753. able to use it as

  754. a bridge to share

  755. the gospel.

  756. That's why I could

  757. say in verse 23

  758. and this is my

  759. favorite verse in

  760. this text.

  761. Verse 23 Paul says

  762. as I observed the

  763. objects of your

  764. worship I found an

  765. altar with the

  766. inscription to the

  767. unknown God.

  768. But what you

  769. worship as unknown

  770. I can now proclaim

  771. to you.

  772. Do you understand

  773. church?

  774. This is what we get

  775. to do.

  776. As we understand the

  777. people we're trying to

  778. reach we can begin to

  779. say to them we

  780. understand what you're

  781. looking for.

  782. We understand what

  783. you're searching for

  784. we can now tell you

  785. exactly what that is.

  786. It is the Lord Jesus

  787. Christ.

  788. Paul took what he'd

  789. learned about the

  790. Athenians worldview and

  791. he used it to build a

  792. bridge to the gospel and

  793. that is essential if we're

  794. going to reach Latter-day

  795. Saints.

  796. We should never approach

  797. them with caricatures.

  798. We should know what they

  799. actually believe.

  800. We should ask them

  801. questions and we should

  802. listen carefully.

  803. Now we don't compromise

  804. the truth of what we

  805. believe but we need to

  806. understand the people

  807. we're trying to reach

  808. with the gospel.

  809. I want to tell you you

  810. do not have to be afraid

  811. of a conversation with a

  812. Latter-day Saint.

  813. You don't need to be

  814. afraid of questions.

  815. You don't need to be

  816. afraid of their religious

  817. background.

  818. All you've got to do is

  819. listen to them carefully,

  820. love them genuinely and

  821. then open this book and

  822. tell them about the

  823. Jesus and the difference

  824. he's made in your life.

  825. Okay, number one, we have

  826. to see our context as a

  827. mission field.

  828. Number two, we have to let

  829. what we see burden us.

  830. Number three, we have to

  831. move toward people.

  832. Number four, we have to

  833. understand the people we're

  834. moving toward and wanting

  835. to reach.

  836. And number five, we must

  837. proclaim Christ.

  838. This is where Paul ultimately

  839. takes the conversation.

  840. He doesn't simply tell the

  841. Athenians to become better

  842. people.

  843. He doesn't tell them to

  844. become more religious or to

  845. add Jesus to everything else

  846. they were doing.

  847. He opens the scriptures and

  848. he tells them about God,

  849. creation, humanity, repentance,

  850. the resurrection.

  851. His goal was not to tear down

  852. their false religion.

  853. His goal was to introduce them

  854. to Jesus.

  855. And that must be our goal too

  856. because if we're going to reach

  857. our LDS neighbors, coworkers,

  858. our goal is not to defeat them

  859. in an argument.

  860. It is not to try to embarrass

  861. them about their beliefs.

  862. Our goal is not to collect some

  863. kind of theological victory.

  864. Our goal is to help them see

  865. Jesus as he is revealed in the

  866. scriptures.

  867. That means we need to talk about

  868. the Jesus of the Bible.

  869. A Jesus who is not merely a

  870. spirit child who became exalted,

  871. but the Jesus who is the

  872. eternal Son of God.

  873. The Jesus who is truly God and

  874. truly man.

  875. The Jesus who came into this

  876. world to save sinners

  877. completely.

  878. The Jesus who offered himself

  879. once for all.

  880. The Jesus who doesn't need

  881. another priest to mediate his

  882. sacrifice.

  883. The Jesus who doesn't need

  884. another temple sacrifice added

  885. to his finished work.

  886. The Jesus who is our great

  887. high priest who is the

  888. one mediator between God and

  889. man.

  890. The Jesus who died.

  891. The Jesus who rose again.

  892. The Jesus who was resurrected.

  893. Who reigns and who will come

  894. again.

  895. That is what we must proclaim.

  896. That salvation is found in

  897. Christ alone.

  898. Through grace alone.

  899. By faith alone.

  900. That is the Jesus we proclaim.

  901. Paul never once said to the

  902. Athenians, listen to me,

  903. you are wrong.

  904. He never said that.

  905. He said, let me tell you who

  906. God really is.

  907. I understand what you're

  908. searching for.

  909. I've got the answer.

  910. What you worship is unknown.

  911. I can now proclaim to you.

  912. You see church, pick in South Carolina

  913. is not merely where you live.

  914. It is the mission field God has

  915. placed before you.

  916. So when you see that LDS missionary

  917. walking down the street, don't

  918. think, oh my goodness, I hope she

  919. doesn't come to my house.

  920. I hope he doesn't knock on my door.

  921. Instead, start thinking, God, maybe

  922. you're going to answer my prayer

  923. and give me an opportunity to be a

  924. missionary in my own backyard.

  925. See, the question is not whether God

  926. has given you a mission field.

  927. He has.

  928. The question is whether you're going

  929. to see it.

  930. Open your eyes.

  931. See the people.

  932. Let God give you his heart, his

  933. burden for them.

  934. Move toward them.

  935. Love them.

  936. Listen to them.

  937. Simply tell them about Jesus.

  938. Because the mission field church is

  939. not somewhere else.

  940. It is right here in your own

  941. backyard.

  942. This past Wednesday, I was seated at

  943. my desk in my office on North

  944. Greenville University campus.

  945. And a couple of students came to

  946. my door.

  947. They were out of breath.

  948. They said, Dr. McQuite, there are

  949. two Latter-day Saint missionaries

  950. out in front of this building.

  951. Now, do you know what I was doing

  952. when they came and told me that I

  953. was working on this message?

  954. I was working on this message.

  955. I thought, well, I can't sit here

  956. and keep working on this message.

  957. I've got to do what this message

  958. says, right?

  959. So I went out, engaged with them,

  960. had a wonderful conversation with

  961. them.

  962. So proud of some of my students who

  963. came alongside of them.

  964. In fact, my wife Ruth this past

  965. Friday saw three of my students

  966. and these two missionaries that

  967. they had met on our campus and

  968. they had taken them out to lunch.

  969. Building relationships with them.

  970. Loving on them.

  971. I invited Friday, I invited, I

  972. mean Wednesday, I invited these two

  973. sister missionaries, they're

  974. female, somewhere between 19 and 20

  975. years of age, see if they would come

  976. to my house for dinner.

  977. They're coming tonight.

  978. So you can be praying about that.

  979. I won't tell you their names just

  980. because I'll keep that, I don't want to

  981. get that out in the open.

  982. But pray for them.

  983. They're going to be at my house

  984. tonight along with several other of

  985. my students.

  986. For a time, we're just going to, we're

  987. not going to try to debate with them,

  988. we're not going to try to argue with

  989. them, we're not going to try to win

  990. some theological argument with them.

  991. We're going to love them.

  992. We're going to listen to them.

  993. And we're going to let them see

  994. Jesus in us.

  995. You can do the same thing.

  996. Because the mission field is not

  997. somewhere else.

  998. It is right here in your own

  999. backyard.

1000. Heavenly Father, thank you for your

  1001. word.

1002. Thank you for how it encourages us

  1003. at times.

1004. Thank you for how it challenges us

  1005. at times.

1006. Thank you for how it convicts us

  1007. at times.

1008. And Lord, what we've said this morning

1009. about Latter-day Saints would apply

1010. to anybody in our community who does

  1011. not know you.

1012. Help us to see, Father, that the

1013. mission field is right here in our

  1014. own backyard.

1015. And as we come to this time of

1016. invitation and commitment, Lord, if

1017. there are decisions that need to be

1018. made of any sort, I pray that your

1019. people would bow their hearts and

1020. their knees before you and say, Lord,

  1021. I'll be that missionary.

1022. I'll make a difference here in my

  1023. community.

1024. I'll see it as a mission field.

1025. I'll be burdened by what I see.

  1026. I'll move toward people.

1027. I'll try to understand them and I

1028. will share Jesus with them.

1029. God, may this be the prayer of each

1030. of our hearts, we pray in Jesus' name.

  1031. Amen.
