  1. Well, good morning. My name's Gareth. I'm going to do the Bible reading this morning. So, if you'd like to turn in your Bibles, look up in your app, Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  2. And we're going to read from verses 9 to the end of the chapter, verse 21.

  3. Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil. Hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.

  4. Do not be slothful in zeal. Be fervent in spirit. Serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope. Be patient in tribulation. Be constant in prayer.

  5. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

  6. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil.

  7. But give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

  8. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God. For it is written, vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.

  9. To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink.

  10. For by so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

  11. Good morning, everyone.

  12. Let's ask for God's help as we come to consider his word. Let's pray.

  13. Heavenly Father, we thank you that we can gather here this morning.

  14. Thank you that we are free to meet, to sing your praises, to encourage one another.

  15. As we turn our minds to your word now, we ask that you would help us to focus on it.

  16. Please enable me to speak clearly and truly.

  17. And we pray that you would encourage and challenge each one of us.

  18. We thank you for your love and we pray that it would resonate in our hearts and in our lives.

  19. In Jesus' name, amen.

  20. If you were to sum up Christian ethics in one word,

  21. you know, just a single word that captures all of how God wants us to be and what God wants of us,

  22. one word that best sums up the example Jesus gives us,

  23. one word for Christian ethics,

  24. I'd hazard a guess that the majority of us would come up with the same word

  25. and that word is, of course, love.

  26. The Christian gospel is the story of God's love for us.

  27. A sacrificial love.

  28. Romans 5 verse 8,

    Romans 5:8

  29. God shows his love for us in this,

  30. in that while we were still sinners,

  31. Christ died for us.

  32. An unbreakable love.

  33. Romans 8 verse 39,

    Romans 8:39

  34. nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God,

  35. which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  36. The gospel is the old, old story of Jesus and his love.

  37. If the gospel is the old, old story of God's love for us,

  38. Christian ethics is the ongoing story of God's love in us.

  39. See the difference?

  40. The gospel, the story of God's love for us.

  41. Christian ethics,

  42. as Sarah so wonderfully illustrated in the kids' talk,

  43. the story of God's love in us.

  44. Romans 5 verse 5,

    Romans 5:5

  45. God's love has been poured into our hearts

  46. through the Holy Spirit he's given us.

  47. Christian ethics is about God transforming us

  48. so that we learn to love as he loved us.

  49. And so when we come to the book of Romans,

  50. Romans chapters 1 to 11 are about the love God has for us,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  51. and Romans chapters 12 to 15 are about the love that God works in us.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  52. But in the words of the 1984 Howard Jones rock ballad,

  53. what is love anyway?

  54. Or maybe that should be,

  55. what is la-a-a-a-a-a-of anyway?

  56. Okay, two people laughed.

  57. What is love?

  58. Now that's too big a question to be answered by a single passage of Scripture.

  59. And so we've got lots of texts in the Bible

  60. that help us see what love is in different ways.

  61. If someone were to ask you,

  62. you know, what is love?

  63. Show me in the Bible what love is.

  64. You might take them to 1 Corinthians chapter 13.

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  65. That beautiful poem about love.

  66. Love is patient.

  67. Love is kind.

  68. It does not envy.

  69. It does not boast.

  70. You might take them to 1 John chapter 4.

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  71. God is love.

  72. And in this is love.

  73. Not that we loved God,

  74. but that he loved us

  75. and gave his son,

  76. sent his son as a propitiation for our sins.

  77. You might even take them to Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  78. Husbands, love your wives

  79. as Christ loved the church

  80. and gave himself up for her.

  81. Now those are the kinds of passages we think of

  82. when it comes to love.

  83. What is love?

  84. And they're the kind of passages I get asked to preach on

  85. when I'm asked to preach at weddings.

  86. I've spoken on each of those passages

  87. multiple times at weddings.

  88. No engaged couple, though,

  89. has ever asked me to preach on Romans 12 verses 9 to 21.

    Romans 12:9–21

  90. Yet it has as its heading,

  91. let love be genuine.

  92. Do you see that at the start of verse 9?

  93. Let love be genuine.

  94. Actually, the word let isn't there in Greek.

  95. If we were to translate it literally,

  96. it's just genuine love.

  97. Kind of like a heading.

  98. I mean, I think let is implied,

  99. but as written, literally,

  100. genuine love.

  101. Or maybe even more literally,

  102. unhypocritical love.

  103. In other words, true love.

  104. And that heading of genuine, unhypocritical, true love,

  105. that hangs over all of the rest that follows.

  106. Like as a banner.

  107. So let's think about this in some context.

  108. In context, Paul has already introduced

  109. the latter chapters of Romans.

  110. In chapter 12 verse 1,

  111. in this way,

  112. I appeal to you, brothers,

  113. by the mercies of God,

  114. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  115. holy and acceptable to God,

  116. which is your spiritual worship.

  117. Paul has introduced this part of his letter

  118. as a response to the mercy of God,

  119. given all that Paul had shown

  120. about God's love and his mercy

  121. in his first 11 chapters.

  122. How do we respond?

  123. And in verse 1 of chapter 12,

  124. he says,

  125. well, we respond by giving,

  126. by offering God everything.

  127. Our bodies as living sacrifices,

  128. everything we are belongs to God.

  129. It's all his.

  130. That's our spiritual worship.

  131. We hold nothing back.

  132. Okay, but what does that look like?

  133. Well, that's what Paul unpacks

  134. in the rest of chapters 12 to 15.

  135. And what it looks like,

  136. Paul says in chapter 12 verse 9,

  137. is love, genuine love.

  138. And that's another thread

  139. that ties together these chapters.

  140. It's there in that heading of sorts

  141. I just mentioned in verse 9.

  142. Paul returns to it in chapter 13 verses 8 to 10,

  143. where he, as Jesus did,

  144. he says,

  145. all the commandments of God

  146. are summed up in the command

  147. to love our neighbour.

  148. And it underlies an exhortation

  149. or a theme Paul's going to develop

  150. in chapters 14 and 15.

  151. In chapters 14 and 15,

  152. Paul draws the Roman believers' attention

  153. to a specific issue among them,

  154. a failure of love that he wants to address.

  155. But the passage before us this morning,

  156. chapter 12 verses 9 to 21,

  157. it's kind of less focused

  158. than, say, chapters 14 and 15,

  159. or even chapters...

  160. It's less focused than those later parts.

  161. What we've got here

  162. is this rapid-fire sequence

  163. of exhortations

  164. where Paul, it seems,

  165. jumps abruptly from one idea to another.

  166. The flow of thought's often unclear.

  167. One commentator called it,

  168. I was reading, spoke of it,

  169. an apparently haphazard arrangement.

  170. Now, how do all these ideas connect together?

  171. Well, on the one hand,

  172. I don't want to sort of over-systematise

  173. what I'm saying here.

  174. We do have a collection of ideas here

  175. and we need to sort of let each one stand

  176. with its own integrity.

  177. Nevertheless, Paul does hang over it

  178. this heading,

  179. let love be genuine.

  180. So, in some sense,

  181. Paul is still articulating

  182. what it means

  183. to be a person of true love,

  184. who loves unhypocritically.

  185. So, let's think about each part.

  186. I'm going to see how I go for time.

  187. We might not get through the whole passage,

  188. but we'll get through as much as we can

  189. with the time available.

  190. So, first, let's think about the heading itself,

  191. let love be genuine.

  192. Why did Paul even need to say this?

  193. Like, why does Paul need to say to them,

  194. let love be genuine?

  195. He needs to say it

  196. because once you have a society

  197. where love is prized as the chief virtue

  198. and where love is sort of elevated

  199. as the heart of ethics,

  200. it's inevitable that counterfeits to love will emerge.

  201. If love isn't highly valued,

  202. and love wasn't the centre of ethics

  203. in the wider Graco-Roman world,

  204. but if love isn't highly valued,

  205. then no one will bother feigning it.

  206. You don't have to pretend to love

  207. if people don't really care about love.

  208. But once love is the centre,

  209. as it was as soon as the church sprang into existence,

  210. that love was at the heart of Christian ethics

  211. from the very beginning,

  212. once love is the centre,

  213. once it's the highest virtue,

  214. then there's a risk of pretense.

  215. And that was so for the church

  216. from its early beginnings.

  217. It's the same, I would say,

  218. is actually true today

  219. for our wider society as well,

  220. because such has been the profound impact

  221. of Christianity on Western culture

  222. that love is still seen as the centre of ethics,

  223. not just in the church now,

  224. but in all of our society,

  225. of ethics,

  226. of any form, I should say.

  227. So just about,

  228. what that means is just about everyone today,

  229. both in the church and in Australia

  230. and in Western countries in general,

  231. just about everyone today

  232. will claim that

  233. whatever they're doing,

  234. they're doing because of love.

  235. I mean, think about that, right?

  236. You hear people say,

  237. now, yes, I know sometimes people say things like,

  238. you know, speak of hate and so on,

  239. but generally people will

  240. justify whatever they're doing,

  241. whatever it happens to be,

  242. as being loving.

  243. And that can be,

  244. you know, whatever the issue,

  245. whatever stance they take on the issue,

  246. whatever side of politics they're on,

  247. whatever their behaviour,

  248. whatever their methods,

  249. they'll claim to have love on their side.

  250. Love is so highly prized in our society

  251. that self-deception

  252. has become a significant risk.

  253. We can think we're loving

  254. when we're not actually loving.

  255. We've become skilled at convincing ourselves

  256. that that is so.

  257. So what was a potential problem

  258. in the first century,

  259. what was a potential problem

  260. in the early church,

  261. just the problem of counterfeit love,

  262. is now a problem everywhere

  263. in our whole society.

  264. But Paul exhorts believers,

  265. don't be those who fake love

  266. or who kid yourselves

  267. that you are loving

  268. when you're not really loving.

  269. Let love be genuine.

  270. And the first thing you need

  271. for love to be genuine

  272. is what Paul says next.

  273. In the second part of verse 9,

  274. he says,

  275. Abhor what is evil,

  276. hold fast to what is good.

  277. Genuine love, Paul says,

  278. is grounded.

  279. It possesses,

  280. it's grounded in reality.

  281. It possesses moral discernment

  282. and moral conviction.

  283. You can't love other people

  284. if you don't know what is good

  285. because love is seeking

  286. what's good for others.

  287. If you don't know what's good,

  288. how can you seek it?

  289. I have a friend

  290. whose mother,

  291. when he was,

  292. I don't know,

  293. 12 or 13 years old or something,

  294. his mother introduced him to marijuana

  295. and encouraged him to use it.

  296. And that started for him

  297. an addiction

  298. that enslaved him for years

  299. until finally Jesus freed him from it.

  300. Now perhaps that mother

  301. thought she was loving her son,

  302. but in reality

  303. she was doing him great harm.

  304. In order to love people,

  305. you need to know

  306. what is good for people.

  307. And here we find ourselves

  308. in a really strange place

  309. in the 21st century.

  310. Because on the one hand,

  311. Western culture

  312. is indebted to Christianity

  313. for elevating love

  314. as the chief virtue.

  315. But on the other hand,

  316. Western civilisation

  317. is in conflict with Christianity

  318. because it has untethered love

  319. from its grounding.

  320. See, in Christian thought,

  321. what is good

  322. good is objective?

  323. It's grounded in reality.

  324. In philosophical terms,

  325. good has an ontological basis

  326. in reality.

  327. Now,

  328. if you think about it,

  329. there are two parts,

  330. there are two main parts

  331. to reality.

  332. There's God

  333. and there's creation.

  334. Everything that exists

  335. is either God or creation.

  336. There are two parts of reality.

  337. reality.

  338. And reality determines

  339. what's good.

  340. So,

  341. good is defined,

  342. on the one hand,

  343. by God himself,

  344. by his character,

  345. and on the other hand,

  346. by the kind of creation

  347. he's made,

  348. the moral order

  349. of the universe,

  350. the nature

  351. and the purpose

  352. of things

  353. as God has created them.

  354. And if good

  355. is grounded

  356. in reality,

  357. then evil,

  358. by corollary,

  359. is just defined

  360. as anything

  361. that's contrary

  362. to reality,

  363. that contradicts,

  364. it's against the character

  365. of God

  366. or it's against

  367. the good moral order

  368. of creation.

  369. But,

  370. you see,

  371. while our society

  372. is held on to love

  373. as the key concept

  374. when it comes

  375. to ethics,

  376. it's untethered

  377. love from reality.

  378. It's untethered

  379. love from the existence

  380. and character

  381. of God.

  382. It's untethered

  383. love from the nature

  384. of creation

  385. as creation.

  386. And so,

  387. from any

  388. true basis

  389. for good and evil.

  390. And so,

  391. now many

  392. in our society

  393. are saying

  394. good and evil

  395. are subjective.

  396. You know,

  397. they're subjective

  398. to the individual.

  399. There's no basis

  400. for really working

  401. out what's good

  402. except for individual

  403. feelings

  404. and preferences.

  405. So,

  406. even in 1984,

  407. in that song

  408. I referenced earlier,

  409. Howard Jones

  410. sang,

  411. maybe love

  412. is letting people

  413. be just what

  414. they want to be.

  415. Now,

  416. if that's what

  417. someone was singing

  418. in 1984,

  419. then here in 2026,

  420. you know,

  421. we're 40 years later

  422. down that path.

  423. Maybe love

  424. is just

  425. letting

  426. people be

  427. just what

  428. they want to be.

  429. There's,

  430. there's no longer

  431. a reference point

  432. for what is good

  433. in external reality.

  434. The only reference point

  435. is our own desires

  436. and preferences.

  437. whatever we want.

  438. Now,

  439. we know the end

  440. point of that,

  441. don't we?

  442. You know,

  443. we know where

  444. that's brought us

  445. as a society.

  446. It's brought us

  447. to the point

  448. where,

  449. you know,

  450. if someone

  451. says,

  452. I wish I was

  453. born in a

  454. different body,

  455. we'll give them

  456. drugs with

  457. permanent

  458. harmful

  459. consequences

  460. and mutilate

  461. their bodies

  462. and do it

  463. all in the

  464. name of

  465. love.

  466. Moral

  467. confusion

  468. reigns.

  469. But if you

  470. want to be

  471. someone who

  472. truly loves,

  473. someone of

  474. genuine love,

  475. you need

  476. moral discernment.

  477. You need to

  478. learn what's

  479. good and

  480. learn what's

  481. evil.

  482. And that

  483. means you

  484. need to

  485. get to know

  486. God and

  487. his character.

  488. and you

  489. need to

  490. learn from

  491. him what

  492. his creation

  493. is, how

  494. it's ordered,

  495. what he

  496. designed it

  497. for, who

  498. you are, what

  499. it means to

  500. be a human

  501. being, what

  502. you're made

  503. for.

  504. And to

  505. learn these

  506. things, you

  507. need to

  508. meditate on

  509. his word.

  510. You need

  511. moral discernment.

  512. But actually,

  513. moral discernment

  514. on its own is

  515. not enough.

  516. You also need

  517. moral conviction.

  518. Verse 9

  519. doesn't say,

  520. know what is

  521. evil and know

  522. what is

  523. good.

  524. It says,

  525. abhor what

  526. is evil and

  527. hold fast to

  528. what is good.

  529. They're strong

  530. words.

  531. We need a

  532. passionate

  533. attachment to

  534. what is good

  535. and we need

  536. an abhorrence

  537. and horror

  538. concerning evil.

  539. In a famous

  540. poem written

  541. in the aftermath

  542. of the First

  543. World War,

  544. William Butler

  545. Yates described

  546. the moral confusion

  547. of his day

  548. with these

  549. words,

  550. the best

  551. lack all

  552. conviction,

  553. the worst

  554. are filled

  555. with passionate

  556. intensity.

  557. It's no

  558. use if we

  559. know what's

  560. evil but

  561. don't abhor it.

  562. It's no use

  563. if we know

  564. what's good

  565. but don't

  566. cling to it.

  567. We can't love

  568. if we're

  569. casual about

  570. good and

  571. evil.

  572. without moral

  573. conviction

  574. we won't

  575. be stirred

  576. to act.

  577. We need

  578. conviction

  579. to rouse us

  580. from our

  581. slumber

  582. so that we'll

  583. step in love

  584. towards others.

  585. May God

  586. teach us

  587. to abhor

  588. what is

  589. evil

  590. and to

  591. hold fast

  592. to what

  593. is good.

  594. Okay,

  595. I've spent

  596. a lot of

  597. time on

  598. verse 9.

  599. The

  600. remainder of

  601. the passage

  602. I think we

  603. can divide

  604. up into

  605. three

  606. sections.

  607. Verses

  608. 10 to

  609. 13

  610. loves

  611. dimensions,

  612. verses

  613. 14 to

  614. 16

  615. loves

  616. adaptations

  617. and

  618. verses

  619. 17 to

  620. 21

  621. loves

  622. victory.

  623. So

  624. loves

  625. dimensions

  626. verses

  627. 10 to

  628. 13.

  629. Verses

  630. 10 to

  631. 13 are

  632. grouped

  633. together

  634. by a

  635. distinctive

  636. and repeated

  637. kind of

  638. arrangement

  639. of words.

  640. It's kind

  641. of hard

  642. to see

  643. in English

  644. translation

  645. but these

  646. verses

  647. they all

  648. lack

  649. finite

  650. verbs,

  651. that is

  652. the normal

  653. kind of

  654. verbs

  655. you'd

  656. find in

  657. sentences.

  658. In

  659. Greek

  660. they all

  661. begin

  662. the same

  663. way

  664. with

  665. definite

  666. articles

  667. and

  668. they're

  669. all

  670. these

  671. short

  672. punchy

  673. lines

  674. that sort

  675. of roll

  676. from one

  677. line to

  678. another

  679. with this

  680. poetic

  681. rhythm.

  682. Let me

  683. try and

  684. demonstrate

  685. it as

  686. closely as

  687. I can

  688. with an

  689. alternative

  690. translation.

  691. This will

  692. come up on

  693. the screen

  694. and I'll

  695. read it

  696. out.

  697. So you

  698. can get

  699. a feel

  700. for a

  701. little bit

  702. of what

  703. this feels

  704. like,

  705. this section

  706. and how

  707. it holds

  708. together.

  709. Can we

  710. grab that

  711. up?

  712. Okay,

  713. here we

  714. go.

  715. So this

  716. is a bit

  717. what it

  718. feels like

  719. reading it

  720. in

  721. Greek.

  722. In

  723. brotherly

  724. love

  725. devoted

  726. to one

  727. another,

  728. in honour

  729. going

  730. before one

  731. another,

  732. in zeal

  733. not lacking,

  734. in the

  735. spirit

  736. fervent,

  737. the Lord

  738. serving,

  739. in hope

  740. rejoicing,

  741. in affliction

  742. enduring,

  743. in prayer

  744. persisting,

  745. for the

  746. needs of

  747. the saints

  748. sharing,

  749. hospitality

  750. pursuing.

  751. I think

  752. Bible

  753. translators

  754. would even

  755. be justified

  756. in laying

  757. out these

  758. verses as a

  759. poem as I

  760. have there,

  761. but you can

  762. see they're

  763. grouped together

  764. in pairs

  765. and triplets.

  766. We've got

  767. two pairs,

  768. pairs in

  769. verse 10

  770. and 13,

  771. triplets in

  772. verse 11

  773. and 12

  774. in the middle.

  775. And the

  776. reason I've

  777. called this

  778. section

  779. love's

  780. dimensions

  781. is because

  782. the pairs

  783. on the

  784. frame,

  785. they're about

  786. love on the

  787. horizontal

  788. plane,

  789. but those

  790. two triplets

  791. in the

  792. middle,

  793. they introduce

  794. a vertical

  795. dimension in

  796. our relationship

  797. with God.

  798. So let's

  799. think about

  800. each of these

  801. four verses.

  802. I'm going

  803. to go back

  804. to the ESV

  805. translation

  806. so we can

  807. take that

  808. down,

  809. Luke,

  810. but we'll

  811. go with

  812. the ESV

  813. translation.

  814. Let's

  815. think about

  816. each of

  817. these four

  818. verses.

  819. Firstly,

  820. brotherly

  821. love in

  822. verse 10.

  823. Love one

  824. another with

  825. brotherly

  826. affection.

  827. Outdo one

  828. another in

  829. showing honour.

  830. Now in the

  831. ancient

  832. Greco-Roman

  833. world,

  834. it was an

  835. honour-shame

  836. culture.

  837. Honour

  838. was a core

  839. value.

  840. It's honour

  841. that was sort

  842. of elevated

  843. above everything

  844. else.

  845. Honour

  846. was a core

  847. value and

  848. honour was

  849. perceived as

  850. a limited

  851. good.

  852. So there

  853. was a limited

  854. supply of

  855. honour.

  856. That means

  857. if someone

  858. else got

  859. more honour,

  860. you kind

  861. of went

  862. down in

  863. honour.

  864. One

  865. scholar

  866. describes it

  867. this way,

  868. nearly every

  869. interaction

  870. with non-family

  871. members has

  872. undertones of

  873. a challenge

  874. to honour.

  875. Essentially,

  876. especially if

  877. you're a man,

  878. relationships

  879. between most

  880. men in the

  881. ancient world

  882. were competitive.

  883. relationships

  884. between

  885. friends were

  886. at best

  887. mercantile.

  888. There was

  889. this sort

  890. of,

  891. there had

  892. to be a

  893. balance of

  894. give and

  895. take.

  896. But

  897. relationships

  898. between

  899. brothers were

  900. different.

  901. That was the

  902. one place

  903. where there

  904. was kind

  905. of no,

  906. well at

  907. least in

  908. ideal,

  909. there was

  910. no competing,

  911. there was

  912. no rivalry.

  913. Of course,

  914. in practice

  915. it may have

  916. differed,

  917. there may

  918. frequently have

  919. been rivalry,

  920. but that was

  921. the ideal.

  922. So here's

  923. how one

  924. moralist

  925. and essayist

  926. philosopher

  927. named Plutarch

  928. writes about it

  929. in an essay

  930. called On

  931. Brotherly

  932. Love.

  933. He says,

  934. a brother

  935. should not

  936. like the

  937. pan of a

  938. balance,

  939. incline the

  940. opposite way

  941. and be

  942. lowered when

  943. his brother

  944. is raised.

  945. You know,

  946. it's like

  947. scales.

  948. He's saying

  949. with brothers

  950. it doesn't

  951. work that

  952. way.

  953. So normally

  954. in relationships

  955. it does,

  956. like honour

  957. goes up

  958. and down,

  959. but not

  960. with brothers.

  961. Not with

  962. brothers.

  963. Instead,

  964. Plutarch says

  965. brothers are

  966. like two

  967. numbers

  968. multiplied

  969. together.

  970. Like two

  971. numbers

  972. multiplied.

  973. If you

  974. increase

  975. either of

  976. the numbers,

  977. the total

  978. increases.

  979. So in

  980. the ancient

  981. world,

  982. in the

  983. ancient

  984. Greco-Roman

  985. world,

  986. for a man

  987. to have

  988. a brother,

  989. that was

  990. probably the

  991. closest relationship

  992. you'd have

  993. in life.

  994. It was a

  995. kind of

  996. oasis,

  997. this one

  998. purely

  999. non-competitive

  1000. relationship

  1001. in the midst

  1002. of a sea

  1003. of rivalry

  1004. and competing

  1005. for honour.

  1006. The one

  1007. relationship

  1008. where you

  1009. wouldn't be

  1010. diminished

  1011. by the

  1012. other person

  1013. being elevated,

  1014. where you

  1015. need not

  1016. concern yourself

  1017. with trying

  1018. to win

  1019. honour from

  1020. them,

  1021. but you

  1022. could rather

  1023. seek to

  1024. bestow

  1025. honour upon

  1026. them.

  1027. And it

  1028. was the

  1029. rarity

  1030. of that

  1031. relationship

  1032. that made

  1033. it so

  1034. special.

  1035. If you

  1036. were fortunate

  1037. you might

  1038. have one

  1039. or maybe

  1040. two

  1041. brothers.

  1042. But the

  1043. Christian

  1044. church did

  1045. something

  1046. radical.

  1047. Jesus said

  1048. to his

  1049. followers,

  1050. you are

  1051. all

  1052. brothers,

  1053. you're

  1054. all

  1055. brothers.

  1056. With

  1057. those words

  1058. he subverted

  1059. and inverted

  1060. the society

  1061. of his

  1062. day.

  1063. In

  1064. church

  1065. relationships

  1066. where you

  1067. bestow

  1068. honour

  1069. rather than

  1070. compete

  1071. for honour

  1072. became not

  1073. the rare

  1074. exception

  1075. but the

  1076. norm,

  1077. the rule.

  1078. You're

  1079. all

  1080. brothers.

  1081. The second

  1082. line in

  1083. verse 10

  1084. captures that

  1085. inversion

  1086. of society.

  1087. Outdo

  1088. one another

  1089. in showing

  1090. honour.

  1091. If

  1092. there's to

  1093. be any

  1094. competition

  1095. it's not

  1096. to get

  1097. honour

  1098. but to

  1099. give it.

  1100. Now as

  1101. we've moved

  1102. away from

  1103. Christianity

  1104. in our

  1105. world our

  1106. culture is

  1107. becoming

  1108. more and

  1109. more

  1110. competitive

  1111. and more

  1112. and more

  1113. vicious

  1114. when it

  1115. comes to

  1116. honour

  1117. and shame.

  1118. And a

  1119. lot of

  1120. it's bound

  1121. up with

  1122. identity

  1123. politics and

  1124. so we

  1125. see the

  1126. kind of

  1127. dynamics we

  1128. see in

  1129. our

  1130. society

  1131. is

  1132. that

  1133. people

  1134. they

  1135. identify

  1136. with a

  1137. particular

  1138. subset

  1139. of

  1140. society

  1141. and

  1142. they

  1143. want

  1144. to

  1145. see

  1146. their

  1147. identity

  1148. honoured

  1149. in the

  1150. cultural

  1151. marketplace

  1152. honoured

  1153. in sports

  1154. and in

  1155. media

  1156. and on

  1157. the

  1158. screen

  1159. and in

  1160. the

  1161. arts

  1162. and in

  1163. politics

  1164. and

  1165. alongside

  1166. that

  1167. wanting

  1168. to see

  1169. their

  1170. identity

  1171. honoured

  1172. there's

  1173. this

  1174. vicious

  1175. side

  1176. that

  1177. we

  1178. see

  1179. operating

  1180. in

  1181. our

  1182. society

  1183. where

  1184. whatever

  1185. identities

  1186. we feel

  1187. to be

  1188. in

  1189. competition

  1190. with

  1191. our

  1192. identity

  1193. we want

  1194. to see

  1195. them

  1196. shamed

  1197. and so

  1198. there's

  1199. this

  1200. nasty

  1201. delight

  1202. we see

  1203. when

  1204. people

  1205. fall

  1206. and

  1207. others

  1208. pile on

  1209. and shame

  1210. them

  1211. and cancel

  1212. them

  1213. and

  1214. with this

  1215. ugly

  1216. and

  1217. self-righteous

  1218. glee

  1219. we've

  1220. become

  1221. that

  1222. well

  1223. we're

  1224. becoming

  1225. that

  1226. honour

  1227. shame

  1228. culture

  1229. again

  1230. competing

  1231. but

  1232. it's

  1233. not to

  1234. be that

  1235. way

  1236. among

  1237. us

  1238. for

  1239. we're

  1240. all

  1241. brothers

  1242. and

  1243. sisters

  1244. in

  1245. Christ

  1246. if we

  1247. are to

  1248. compete

  1249. let it

  1250. be in

  1251. showing

  1252. honour

  1253. in

  1254. lifting

  1255. up

  1256. one

  1257. another

  1258. in

  1259. celebrating

  1260. others

  1261. in

  1262. serving

  1263. others

  1264. Lord

  1265. God

  1266. by

  1267. your

  1268. grace

  1269. make

  1270. this

  1271. church

  1272. an

  1273. oasis

  1274. of

  1275. brotherhood

  1276. in

  1277. the

  1278. midst

  1279. of

  1280. a

  1281. vicious

  1282. world

  1283. but

  1284. what's

  1285. going

  1286. to

  1287. sustain

  1288. this

  1289. brotherly

  1290. love

  1291. for

  1292. one

  1293. another

  1294. well

  1295. verse

  1296. 11

  1297. Paul

  1298. says

  1299. what

  1300. sustains

  1301. brotherly

  1302. love

  1303. is

  1304. zeal

  1305. verse

  1306. 11

  1307. do

  1308. not

  1309. be

  1310. slothful

  1311. in

  1312. zeal

  1313. be

  1314. fervent

  1315. in

  1316. spirit

  1317. serve

  1318. the

  1319. Lord

  1320. we

  1321. need

  1322. the

  1323. vertical

  1324. dimension

  1325. to

  1326. fuel

  1327. the

  1328. horizontal

  1329. dimension

  1330. now

  1331. more

  1332. often

  1333. than

  1334. not

  1335. when

  1336. I

  1337. when

  1338. I

  1339. personally

  1340. when

  1341. I

  1342. fail

  1343. to

  1344. love

  1345. when

  1346. I

  1347. am

  1348. being

  1349. unloving

  1350. often

  1351. it's

  1352. for no

  1353. other

  1354. reason

  1355. that

  1356. I'm

  1357. feeling

  1358. weary

  1359. and

  1360. jaded

  1361. and sick

  1362. of the

  1363. effort

  1364. required

  1365. when

  1366. zeal

  1367. falters

  1368. love

  1369. fails

  1370. when

  1371. I

  1372. was

  1373. a

  1374. kid

  1375. some

  1376. of

  1377. you

  1378. will

  1379. remember

  1380. this

  1381. some

  1382. of

  1383. you

  1384. won't

  1385. but

  1386. when

  1387. I

  1388. was

  1389. a

  1390. kid

  1391. there

  1392. was

  1393. an

  1394. ad

  1395. on

  1396. TV

  1397. for

  1398. Duracell

  1399. batteries

  1400. and

  1401. they

  1402. had

  1403. a

  1404. bunch

  1405. of

  1406. pink

  1407. bunnies

  1408. playing

  1409. the

  1410. drums

  1411. does

  1412. anyone

  1413. remember

  1414. that

  1415. ad

  1416. yeah

  1417. a few

  1418. do

  1419. great

  1420. and

  1421. you

  1422. know

  1423. the

  1424. pink

  1425. bunnies

  1426. with

  1427. ordinary

  1428. batteries

  1429. they

  1430. all

  1431. just

  1432. sort

  1433. of

  1434. petered

  1435. out

  1436. and

  1437. stopped

  1438. playing

  1439. drumming

  1440. they

  1441. ran

  1442. out

  1443. of

  1444. juice

  1445. but

  1446. the

  1447. battery

  1448. the

  1449. bunny

  1450. that

  1451. had

  1452. a

  1453. Duracell

  1454. battery

  1455. well

  1456. it

  1457. kept

  1458. on

  1459. going

  1460. our

  1461. relationship

  1462. with

  1463. God

  1464. is

  1465. the

  1466. battery

  1467. we

  1468. need

  1469. for

  1470. love

  1471. we

  1472. need

  1473. to

  1474. draw

  1475. close

  1476. to

  1477. God

  1478. if

  1479. we

  1480. are

  1481. to

  1482. keep

  1483. drawing

  1484. close

  1485. to

  1486. one

  1487. another

  1488. I

  1489. think

  1490. spirit

  1491. in

  1492. be

  1493. fervent

  1494. in

  1495. the

  1496. spirit

  1497. it's

  1498. sort

  1499. of

  1500. in

  1501. parallel

  1502. to

  1503. Lord

  1504. the

  1505. Lord

  1506. Jesus

  1507. in

  1508. the

  1509. third

  1510. line

  1511. there

  1512. of

  1513. verse

  1514. 11

  1515. be

  1516. fervent

  1517. in

  1518. the

  1519. spirit

  1520. serve

  1521. the

  1522. Lord

  1523. so

  1524. the

  1525. second

  1526. line

  1527. saying

  1528. let

  1529. your

  1530. heart

  1531. be

  1532. set

  1533. on

  1534. fire

  1535. by

  1536. God's

  1537. spirit

  1538. that's

  1539. what's

  1540. going

  1541. to

  1542. sustain

  1543. our

  1544. zeal

  1545. let

  1546. your

  1547. heart

  1548. be

  1549. set

  1550. on

  1551. fire

  1552. by

  1553. God's

  1554. spirit

  1555. and

  1556. if

  1557. that

  1558. sounds

  1559. a

  1560. little

  1561. abstract

  1562. how do

  1563. I

  1564. even

  1565. do

  1566. that

  1567. how

  1568. do

  1569. I

  1570. let

  1571. my

  1572. heart

  1573. be

  1574. set

  1575. on

  1576. fire

  1577. by

  1578. God's

  1579. spirit

  1580. well the

  1581. third

  1582. line

  1583. makes

  1584. it

  1585. more

  1586. concrete

  1587. serve

  1588. the

  1589. Lord

  1590. focus

  1591. on

  1592. Jesus

  1593. the

  1594. Lord

  1595. Jesus

  1596. his

  1597. example

  1598. his

  1599. teaching

  1600. what

  1601. he

  1602. wants

  1603. what

  1604. he

  1605. commands

  1606. Jesus

  1607. said

  1608. in

  1609. John

  1610. 14

  1611. if

  1612. you

  1613. love

  1614. me

  1615. you'll

  1616. keep

  1617. my

  1618. commandments

  1619. and

  1620. he

  1621. said

  1622. in

  1623. John

  1624. 15

  1625. this

  1626. is

  1627. my

  1628. commandment

  1629. that

  1630. you

  1631. love

  1632. one

  1633. another

  1634. if

  1635. we

  1636. want

  1637. zeal

  1638. that

  1639. does

  1640. not

  1641. falter

  1642. and

  1643. hearts

  1644. set

  1645. on

  1646. fire

  1647. by

  1648. God's

  1649. spirit

  1650. we

  1651. need

  1652. to

  1653. keep

  1654. looking

  1655. to

  1656. Christ

  1657. and

  1658. being

  1659. renewed

  1660. in

  1661. our

  1662. love

  1663. for

  1664. him

  1665. we

  1666. need

  1667. zeal

  1668. for

  1669. love

  1670. well

  1671. if

  1672. verse

  1673. 11

  1674. addresses

  1675. one

  1676. reason

  1677. our

  1678. love

  1679. can

  1680. fail

  1681. which

  1682. is

  1683. when

  1684. we're

  1685. spiritually

  1686. running

  1687. on

  1688. empty

  1689. it

  1690. seems

  1691. to

  1692. me

  1693. that

  1694. verse

  1695. 12

  1696. might

  1697. address

  1698. another

  1699. reason

  1700. why

  1701. love

  1702. can

  1703. falter

  1704. and

  1705. that's

  1706. because

  1707. of

  1708. suffering

  1709. verse

  1710. 12

  1711. rejoice

  1712. in

  1713. hope

  1714. be

  1715. patient

  1716. in

  1717. tribulation

  1718. be

  1719. constant

  1720. in

  1721. prayer

  1722. now

  1723. when

  1724. the

  1725. storms

  1726. swirl

  1727. around

  1728. us

  1729. it's

  1730. hard

  1731. to

  1732. see

  1733. beyond

  1734. our

  1735. own

  1736. trouble

  1737. when

  1738. we're

  1739. stooped

  1740. over

  1741. with a

  1742. heavy

  1743. burden

  1744. we have

  1745. little

  1746. strength

  1747. left

  1748. to help

  1749. our

  1750. neighbour

  1751. with

  1752. his

  1753. but

  1754. in

  1755. verse

  1756. 12

  1757. Paul

  1758. gives

  1759. us

  1760. three

  1761. things

  1762. we

  1763. can

  1764. do

  1765. when

  1766. we're

  1767. suffering

  1768. the

  1769. first

  1770. thing

  1771. we can

  1772. do

  1773. is

  1774. we

  1775. can

  1776. rejoice

  1777. in

  1778. hope

  1779. we can

  1780. rejoice

  1781. in

  1782. hope

  1783. when

  1784. you're

  1785. suffering

  1786. rejoice

  1787. in

  1788. hope

  1789. every

  1790. awful

  1791. thing

  1792. you're

  1793. facing

  1794. whatever

  1795. it

  1796. is

  1797. every

  1798. awful

  1799. thing

  1800. you're

  1801. facing

  1802. whether

  1803. it's

  1804. sickness

  1805. or

  1806. poverty

  1807. or

  1808. loneliness

  1809. or

  1810. grief

  1811. or

  1812. malice

  1813. or

  1814. slander

  1815. whatever

  1816. awful

  1817. thing

  1818. you're

  1819. facing

  1820. you can

  1821. look at

  1822. it

  1823. straight

  1824. on

  1825. and

  1826. say

  1827. to

  1828. it

  1829. you

  1830. are

  1831. temporary

  1832. you're

  1833. with me

  1834. only a

  1835. little

  1836. while

  1837. soon

  1838. you'll

  1839. pass

  1840. whatever

  1841. it

  1842. is

  1843. for

  1844. our

  1845. hope

  1846. is

  1847. certain

  1848. we

  1849. have

  1850. the

  1851. promises

  1852. of

  1853. God's

  1854. word

  1855. we

  1856. have

  1857. the

  1858. first

  1859. fruits

  1860. of

  1861. the

  1862. resurrection

  1863. of the

  1864. Son

  1865. of

  1866. God

  1867. from

  1868. the

  1869. dead

  1870. we

  1871. have

  1872. the

  1873. deposit

  1874. of

  1875. God's

  1876. spirit

  1877. guaranteeing

  1878. the

  1879. inheritance

  1880. that is

  1881. to

  1882. come

  1883. the

  1884. night

  1885. of

  1886. tears

  1887. is

  1888. brief

  1889. the

  1890. day

  1891. which

  1892. is

  1893. dawning

  1894. is

  1895. everlasting

  1896. even

  1897. in

  1898. suffering

  1899. we

  1900. can

  1901. rejoice

  1902. for

  1903. we

  1904. have

  1905. hope

  1906. no

  1907. even

  1908. more

  1909. than

  1910. that

  1911. in

  1912. suffering

  1913. we

  1914. learn

  1915. to

  1916. rejoice

  1917. in

  1918. hope

  1919. for

  1920. suffering

  1921. teaches

  1922. us

  1923. to

  1924. hold

  1925. more

  1926. lightly

  1927. to

  1928. what's

  1929. temporary

  1930. and

  1931. to

  1932. look

  1933. to

  1934. what's

  1935. eternal

  1936. it's

  1937. the

  1938. first

  1939. thing

  1940. we

  1941. can

  1942. do

  1943. we

  1944. can

  1945. rejoice

  1946. in

  1947. hope

  1948. second

  1949. thing

  1950. we

  1951. can

  1952. do

  1953. we

  1954. can

  1955. be

  1956. patient

  1957. in

  1958. tribulation

  1959. we

  1960. can

  1961. endure

  1962. when

  1963. we're

  1964. afflicted

  1965. God

  1966. is

  1967. simply

  1968. calling

  1969. us

  1970. to

  1971. wait

  1972. to

  1973. wait

  1974. for

  1975. what

  1976. is

  1977. good

  1978. well

  1979. then

  1980. let

  1981. us

  1982. wait

  1983. and

  1984. keep

  1985. our

  1986. eyes

  1987. on

  1988. the

  1989. horizon

  1990. the

  1991. sun

  1992. will

  1993. rise

  1994. !

  1995. they

  1996. also

  1997. serve

  1998. who

  1999. only

  2000. stand

  2001. and

  2002. wait

  2003. if

  2004. that's

  2005. all

  2006. you

  2007. can

  2008. do

  2009. if

  2010. all

  2011. you

  2012. can

  2013. do

  2014. is

  2015. be

  2016. patient

  2017. in

  2018. tribulation

  2019. well

  2020. they

  2021. also

  2022. serve

  2023. who

  2024. only

  2025. stand

  2026. and

  2027. wait

  2028. but

  2029. even

  2030. so

  2031. there

  2032. is a

  2033. third

  2034. thing

  2035. we

  2036. can

  2037. do

  2038. we

  2039. can

  2040. be

  2041. constant

  2042. in

  2043. prayer

  2044. suffering

  2045. can

  2046. be

  2047. for

  2048. us

  2049. a

  2050. school

  2051. of

  2052. prayer

  2053. when

  2054. we

  2055. have

  2056. no

  2057. strength

  2058. of

  2059. our

  2060. own

  2061. we

  2062. turn

  2063. to

  2064. the

  2065. one

  2066. who

  2067. is

  2068. mighty

  2069. who

  2070. is

  2071. with

  2072. us

  2073. who

  2074. is

  2075. good

  2076. who

  2077. is

  2078. faithful

  2079. our

  2080. desperation

  2081. teaches

  2082. !

  2083. us to

  2084. pray

  2085. and

  2086. so

  2087. suffering

  2088. may

  2089. even

  2090. open

  2091. up

  2092. for

  2093. us

  2094. a

  2095. ministry

  2096. of

  2097. prayer

  2098. for

  2099. others

  2100. too

  2101. our

  2102. own

  2103. need

  2104. drives

  2105. us

  2106. to

  2107. pray

  2108. but

  2109. our

  2110. prayers

  2111. range

  2112. far

  2113. beyond

  2114. our

  2115. own

  2116. need

  2117. if

  2118. you're

  2119. in

  2120. the

  2121. midst

  2122. of

  2123. a

  2124. season

  2125. of

  2126. suffering

  2127. perhaps

  2128. this

  2129. verse

  2130. is

  2131. a

  2132. verse

  2133. for

  2134. you

  2135. to

  2136. take

  2137. to

  2138. heart

  2139. today

  2140. rejoice

  2141. in

  2142. hope

  2143. be

  2144. patient

  2145. in

  2146. tribulation

  2147. be

  2148. constant

  2149. in

  2150. prayer

  2151. when

  2152. verse

  2153. 13

  2154. Paul

  2155. returns

  2156. to

  2157. the

  2158. horizontal

  2159. dimension

  2160. with

  2161. which

  2162. he

  2163. began

  2164. a

  2165. practical

  2166. example

  2167. and

  2168. gives

  2169. practical

  2170. examples

  2171. of the

  2172. brotherly

  2173. love

  2174. that

  2175. he

  2176. calls

  2177. us

  2178. to

  2179. in

  2180. verse

  2181. 10

  2182. so

  2183. verse

  2184. 13

  2185. contribute

  2186. to the

  2187. needs

  2188. of

  2189. the

  2190. saints

  2191. and

  2192. seek

  2193. to

  2194. show

  2195. hospitality

  2196. I've

  2197. spoken

  2198. about

  2199. some

  2200. of

  2201. these

  2202. ideas

  2203. recently

  2204. in

  2205. my

  2206. series

  2207. of

  2208. talks

  2209. on

  2210. God's

  2211. mercy

  2212. so

  2213. I

  2214. won't

  2215. labour

  2216. the

  2217. point

  2218. again

  2219. now

  2220. but

  2221. let

  2222. me

  2223. simply

  2224. observe

  2225. that

  2226. genuine

  2227. love

  2228. meets

  2229. needs

  2230. it

  2231. meets

  2232. the

  2233. needs

  2234. of

  2235. others

  2236. that's

  2237. what

  2238. love

  2239. does

  2240. including

  2241. the need

  2242. for

  2243. hospitality

  2244. now

  2245. in

  2246. the

  2247. original

  2248. sense

  2249. mean

  2250. having

  2251. people

  2252. over

  2253. for

  2254. dinner

  2255. hospitality

  2256. here

  2257. meant

  2258. providing

  2259. a

  2260. place

  2261. for

  2262. strangers

  2263. and

  2264. travellers

  2265. to

  2266. stay

  2267. welcoming

  2268. people

  2269. into

  2270. your

  2271. home

  2272. who

  2273. had

  2274. nowhere

  2275. else

  2276. to

  2277. go

  2278. it

  2279. might

  2280. be

  2281. that

  2282. in

  2283. the

  2284. current

  2285. economic

  2286. climate

  2287. where

  2288. people

  2289. are

  2290. experiencing

  2291. housing

  2292. pressure

  2293. we

  2294. need

  2295. to

  2296. keep

  2297. this

  2298. kind

  2299. of

  2300. hospitality

  2301. on

  2302. the

  2303. radar

  2304. it

  2305. may

  2306. at

  2307. times

  2308. be

  2309. needed

  2310. let

  2311. me

  2312. give

  2313. you

  2314. two

  2315. examples

  2316. of

  2317. generosity

  2318. I

  2319. can

  2320. think

  2321. of

  2322. from

  2323. just

  2324. recent

  2325. weeks

  2326. amongst

  2327. !

  2328. us

  2329. to

  2330. encourage

  2331. you

  2332. one

  2333. is

  2334. on

  2335. the

  2336. Monday

  2337. just

  2338. past

  2339. the

  2340. public

  2341. holiday

  2342. a

  2343. team

  2344. of

  2345. volunteers

  2346. went

  2347. to

  2348. Rob

  2349. and

  2350. Marg's

  2351. place

  2352. to

  2353. weed

  2354. the

  2355. garden

  2356. and

  2357. tidy

  2358. up

  2359. the

  2360. yard

  2361. it's

  2362. something

  2363. that I

  2364. know

  2365. had

  2366. been

  2367. causing

  2368. Rob

  2369. some

  2370. anxiety

  2371. and

  2372. frustration

  2373. because

  2374. there

  2375. was a

  2376. lot

  2377. of

  2378. work

  2379. to

  2380. do

  2381. and

  2382. he

  2383. was

  2384. finding

  2385. that

  2386. physically

  2387. he

  2388. just

  2389. couldn't

  2390. do

  2391. any

  2392. more

  2393. the

  2394. work

  2395. in the

  2396. yard

  2397. that he

  2398. used

  2399. to be

  2400. able

  2401. to do

  2402. well how

  2403. good it

  2404. is that

  2405. Rob and

  2406. Marg

  2407. were willing

  2408. to ask

  2409. for help

  2410. and how

  2411. good it

  2412. was so

  2413. quickly

  2414. given

  2415. what a

  2416. blessing

  2417. both to

  2418. those who

  2419. received

  2420. and to

  2421. those who

  2422. gave

  2423. so can

  2424. I just

  2425. encourage you

  2426. brothers and

  2427. sisters if

  2428. you have

  2429. practical

  2430. needs

  2431. that might

  2432. be met

  2433. by

  2434. church

  2435. here

  2436. please let

  2437. them be

  2438. known

  2439. now we

  2440. won't always

  2441. get it

  2442. right

  2443. there'll be

  2444. times that

  2445. we let

  2446. one another

  2447. down

  2448. we're

  2449. finite

  2450. we're

  2451. flawed

  2452. but

  2453. let if

  2454. you have

  2455. needs

  2456. let them

  2457. be known

  2458. the presence

  2459. of needs

  2460. in the

  2461. family of

  2462. God

  2463. is not

  2464. a bug

  2465. in the

  2466. system

  2467. it's a

  2468. feature

  2469. God

  2470. allows

  2471. so that

  2472. deeds of

  2473. love

  2474. may flow

  2475. here's

  2476. another

  2477. example

  2478. on the

  2479. Thursday

  2480. a couple

  2481. of weeks

  2482. ago when

  2483. Alyssa was

  2484. rushed to

  2485. hospital

  2486. a few

  2487. days before

  2488. her early

  2489. delivery of

  2490. Dotty

  2491. well Alyssa's

  2492. a florist

  2493. and that

  2494. Saturday

  2495. she had a

  2496. wedding

  2497. that she was

  2498. preparing the

  2499. flowers for

  2500. and all the

  2501. flowers had

  2502. been delivered

  2503. but they

  2504. hadn't been

  2505. arranged into

  2506. bouquets and

  2507. table settings

  2508. and whatever

  2509. decoration

  2510. whatever else

  2511. was needed

  2512. for the

  2513. wedding

  2514. a couple

  2515. of sisters

  2516. amongst us

  2517. went to

  2518. Alyssa's

  2519. house on

  2520. that Thursday

  2521. night

  2522. first to

  2523. trim all

  2524. the flowers

  2525. but these

  2526. sisters aren't

  2527. florists

  2528. so they

  2529. got in

  2530. touch with

  2531. other

  2532. believers

  2533. who go to

  2534. other churches

  2535. who are

  2536. florists

  2537. and two

  2538. other women

  2539. went and

  2540. joined them

  2541. the next

  2542. day on

  2543. the Friday

  2544. now with

  2545. all the

  2546. trim flowers

  2547. to arrange

  2548. them into

  2549. all the

  2550. decorations

  2551. and bouquets

  2552. love

  2553. what a

  2554. beautiful

  2555. act of

  2556. love

  2557. meeting a

  2558. need that

  2559. arose amongst

  2560. us

  2561. contribute to

  2562. the needs of

  2563. the saints

  2564. and seek to

  2565. show hospitality

  2566. love's

  2567. dimensions

  2568. horizontal

  2569. vertical

  2570. love's

  2571. adaptations

  2572. I've

  2573. called

  2574. verses 14

  2575. to 16

  2576. love's

  2577. adaptations

  2578. this section

  2579. is a bit

  2580. more loosely

  2581. linked than

  2582. what came

  2583. before

  2584. the section

  2585. before is

  2586. linked

  2587. stylistically

  2588. as I

  2589. tried to

  2590. show you

  2591. the section

  2592. that follows

  2593. is linked

  2594. thematically

  2595. verse 14

  2596. to 16

  2597. are a bit

  2598. more loosely

  2599. linked

  2600. but I think

  2601. what they

  2602. have in

  2603. common

  2604. is that

  2605. each of the

  2606. verses

  2607. verse 14

  2608. to 16

  2609. describes a

  2610. way in

  2611. which love

  2612. manifests itself

  2613. according to

  2614. the needs

  2615. of the

  2616. person before

  2617. it

  2618. so

  2619. encountering

  2620. different

  2621. kinds of

  2622. people

  2623. and so

  2624. expressing

  2625. itself in

  2626. different

  2627. ways

  2628. genuine

  2629. love

  2630. adapts

  2631. because

  2632. genuine

  2633. love is

  2634. other person

  2635. centred

  2636. it's

  2637. concerned

  2638. chiefly

  2639. with the

  2640. needs

  2641. of the

  2642. other

  2643. person

  2644. and in

  2645. each of

  2646. these three

  2647. cases here

  2648. the sinful

  2649. tendencies of

  2650. our heart

  2651. might lead

  2652. us in a

  2653. different

  2654. direction

  2655. so let's

  2656. look at

  2657. each of

  2658. them

  2659. first

  2660. to the

  2661. persecutor

  2662. love

  2663. shows

  2664. grace

  2665. verse 14

  2666. bless

  2667. those who

  2668. persecute

  2669. you

  2670. bless

  2671. and do

  2672. not

  2673. curse

  2674. them

  2675. here

  2676. Jesus

  2677. words

  2678. stand

  2679. behind

  2680. Paul's

  2681. words

  2682. Paul

  2683. is

  2684. I think

  2685. self-consciously

  2686. echoing

  2687. the teaching

  2688. of Jesus

  2689. it was probably

  2690. recognized

  2691. by the

  2692. Roman

  2693. believers

  2694. Jesus

  2695. had said

  2696. in Luke

  2697. 7

  2698. I say

  2699. to you

  2700. who

  2701. hear

  2702. love

  2703. your

  2704. enemies

  2705. do

  2706. good

  2707. to those

  2708. who

  2709. hate

  2710. you

  2711. bless

  2712. those

  2713. who

  2714. curse

  2715. you

  2716. pray

  2717. for

  2718. those

  2719. who

  2720. abuse

  2721. you

  2722. now this

  2723. is a familiar

  2724. Christian teaching

  2725. but in

  2726. practice

  2727. it is

  2728. wild

  2729. how can we

  2730. bless those

  2731. who persecute

  2732. us

  2733. us

  2734. that would

  2735. mean

  2736. we

  2737. refrain

  2738. from

  2739. hating

  2740. them

  2741. even

  2742. when

  2743. they

  2744. hate

  2745. us

  2746. it

  2747. would

  2748. mean

  2749. we

  2750. want

  2751. good

  2752. for

  2753. them

  2754. even

  2755. when

  2756. they

  2757. want

  2758. evil

  2759. for

  2760. us

  2761. it

  2762. would

  2763. mean

  2764. that

  2765. in

  2766. the

  2767. midst

  2768. of

  2769. being

  2770. persecuted

  2771. by

  2772. them

  2773. we're

  2774. more

  2775. concerned

  2776. about

  2777. what

  2778. their

  2779. act

  2780. of

  2781. persecution

  2782. is

  2783. doing

  2784. to

  2785. them

  2786. than

  2787. what

  2788. it's

  2789. doing

  2790. to

  2791. us

  2792. we're

  2793. more

  2794. concerned

  2795. about

  2796. how

  2797. their

  2798. evil

  2799. dehumanizes

  2800. them

  2801. than

  2802. how

  2803. their

  2804. evil

  2805. dehumanizes

  2806. us

  2807. I

  2808. remember

  2809. reading the

  2810. Bible

  2811. with some

  2812. non-Christian

  2813. college

  2814. students

  2815. at uni

  2816. who were

  2817. considering

  2818. Jesus

  2819. they were

  2820. thinking about

  2821. Jesus

  2822. and we

  2823. got to

  2824. this

  2825. point

  2826. about

  2827. love

  2828. for

  2829. enemies

  2830. and one

  2831. of them

  2832. just

  2833. flat

  2834. out

  2835. rejected

  2836. it

  2837. no

  2838. one

  2839. could

  2840. love

  2841. their

  2842. enemies

  2843. now

  2844. this

  2845. is

  2846. where

  2847. love

  2848. meets

  2849. its

  2850. greatest

  2851. test

  2852. now

  2853. I

  2854. haven't

  2855. had

  2856. many

  2857. enemies

  2858. in

  2859. my

  2860. life

  2861. but

  2862. I've

  2863. had

  2864. a

  2865. few

  2866. a

  2867. few

  2868. people

  2869. who

  2870. have

  2871. it

  2872. seems

  2873. actively

  2874. sought

  2875. to

  2876. belittle

  2877. me

  2878. diminish

  2879. me

  2880. and

  2881. undermine

  2882. the

  2883. work

  2884. I

  2885. do

  2886. when

  2887. I

  2888. think

  2889. of

  2890. a

  2891. couple

  2892. of

  2893. them

  2894. I

  2895. actually

  2896. can

  2897. still

  2898. feel

  2899. my

  2900. body

  2901. tense

  2902. up

  2903. but

  2904. to

  2905. bless

  2906. those

  2907. who

  2908. persecute

  2909. us

  2910. is not

  2911. gritting

  2912. our teeth

  2913. and putting

  2914. up

  2915. with it

  2916. because

  2917. I

  2918. gleefully

  2919. know

  2920. God

  2921. will

  2922. get

  2923. them

  2924. in

  2925. the

  2926. end

  2927. that's

  2928. not

  2929. blessing

  2930. them

  2931. blessing

  2932. goes

  2933. beyond

  2934. what

  2935. Paul

  2936. will

  2937. go on

  2938. to

  2939. say

  2940. in

  2941. verse

  2942. 19

  2943. about

  2944. refraining

  2945. from

  2946. vengeance

  2947. when

  2948. you

  2949. bless

  2950. someone

  2951. you're

  2952. praying

  2953. father

  2954. forgive

  2955. them

  2956. you're

  2957. praying

  2958. the

  2959. Lord

  2960. bless

  2961. you

  2962. and

  2963. keep

  2964. you

  2965. and

  2966. make

  2967. his

  2968. face

  2969. shine

  2970. upon

  2971. you

  2972. and

  2973. be

  2974. gracious

  2975. to

  2976. you

  2977. and

  2978. the

  2979. Lord

  2980. lift

  2981. up

  2982. his

  2983. countenance

  2984. upon

  2985. you

  2986. and

  2987. give

  2988. you

  2989. peace

  2990. that's

  2991. what

  2992. your

  2993. persecutor

  2994. needs

  2995. that's

  2996. what

  2997. your

  2998. enemy

  2999. needs

  3000. and

  3001. that's

  3002. what

  3003. genuine

  3004. love

  3005. would

  3006. have

  3007. you

  3008. wish

  3009. for

  3010. and

  3011. pray

  3012. for

  3013. for

  3014. them

  3015. there

  3016. are

  3017. at

  3018. present

  3019. a few

  3020. prominent

  3021. voices

  3022. in the

  3023. public

  3024. square

  3025. who are

  3026. representing

  3027. things

  3028. Christians

  3029. care

  3030. about

  3031. but who

  3032. are

  3033. I think

  3034. poor

  3035. examples

  3036. when it

  3037. comes to

  3038. precisely

  3039. this

  3040. point

  3041. not

  3042. surprisingly

  3043. when they

  3044. stand up

  3045. for

  3046. something

  3047. good

  3048. in

  3049. the

  3050. public

  3051. square

  3052. they

  3053. come

  3054. under

  3055. attack

  3056. they're

  3057. hated

  3058. and

  3059. despised

  3060. and

  3061. lies

  3062. are

  3063. written

  3064. about

  3065. them

  3066. and so

  3067. on

  3068. and yet

  3069. sometimes

  3070. I think

  3071. we're

  3072. seeing

  3073. people

  3074. respond

  3075. to

  3076. such

  3077. slander

  3078. with

  3079. bitter

  3080. counter

  3081. attack

  3082. with

  3083. mocking

  3084. and

  3085. belittling

  3086. those

  3087. who have

  3088. persecuted

  3089. them

  3090. I think

  3091. that's

  3092. understandable

  3093. but it's

  3094. regrettable

  3095. let that

  3096. not be

  3097. our way

  3098. and

  3099. pray for

  3100. those

  3101. who are

  3102. you know

  3103. at the

  3104. front lines

  3105. in the

  3106. public

  3107. square

  3108. standing up

  3109. for things

  3110. that are

  3111. good

  3112. pray that

  3113. they would

  3114. learn to

  3115. bless

  3116. those

  3117. who

  3118. persecute

  3119. them

  3120. well the

  3121. second

  3122. adaptation

  3123. of love

  3124. is

  3125. in verse

  3126. 15

  3127. empathy

  3128. rejoice

  3129. with

  3130. those

  3131. who

  3132. rejoice

  3133. weep

  3134. with

  3135. those

  3136. who

  3137. weep

  3138. genuine

  3139. love

  3140. shows

  3141. empathy

  3142. it

  3143. enters

  3144. into

  3145. and

  3146. shares

  3147. the

  3148. experience

  3149. of

  3150. others

  3151. rejoicing

  3152. and

  3153. weeping

  3154. are

  3155. opposite

  3156. extremes

  3157. but

  3158. they're

  3159. both

  3160. fitting

  3161. in

  3162. their

  3163. time

  3164. ecclesiastes

  3165. 3

  3166. there's

  3167. a

  3168. time

  3169. to

  3170. weep

  3171. and

  3172. there's

  3173. a

  3174. time

  3175. to

  3176. laugh

  3177. both

  3178. are

  3179. fitting

  3180. because

  3181. our

  3182. experience

  3183. of life

  3184. in this

  3185. world

  3186. is

  3187. mixed

  3188. both

  3189. goodness

  3190. and

  3191. brokenness

  3192. are

  3193. features

  3194. of this

  3195. world

  3196. and so

  3197. both

  3198. goodness

  3199. and

  3200. brokenness

  3201. are

  3202. experiences

  3203. in our

  3204. life

  3205. sometimes

  3206. we delight

  3207. in the

  3208. goodness

  3209. of creation

  3210. sometimes

  3211. we despair

  3212. at the

  3213. effects

  3214. of sin

  3215. love

  3216. is so

  3217. other person

  3218. centered

  3219. that it

  3220. prompts

  3221. us to

  3222. feel

  3223. what

  3224. others

  3225. feel

  3226. may

  3227. may

  3228. may

  3229. may

3230. with others. True love will

3231. multiply their joy by sharing it with them on the one hand

3232. or will provide comfort in Greece by sitting

3233. alongside them in the ash heap.

3234. And as I think about my life, some of the most touching and memorable

3235. experiences of love I have had have been when someone

3236. has done one of those two things for me.

  3237. The third adaptation

3238. of love in verse 16 is humility. Live in harmony with one another.

3239. Do not be haughty but associate with the lowly.

3240. Never be wise in your own sight.

3241. In Greek, each of the three lines in this verse uses a particular word

3242. for thinking, for our thinking.

3243. Love adopts a mindset of humility.

3244. Love fits in with others rather than demanding its own way.

  3245. Love rejects pride.

3246. Love never pulls rank or flaunts worldly status.

  3247. Love never boasts.

3248. Love never imagines itself superior to others.

3249. Love respects the worth and value of others, whoever they are,

3250. and draws near to those whom the world might despise.

3251. Now as I think about love's adaptations here,

  3252. grace, empathy, humility,

3253. as I think about these adaptations of love,

3254. or as we think about them,

  3255. I wonder if you've noticed

3256. how perfectly each of these three verses describes the Lord Jesus.

3257. Each verse describes an adaptation or an accommodation

3258. that God's love has made for us.

  3259. grace,

  3260. grace,

3261. because God has blessed enemies.

  3262. He's forgiven

  3263. those who persecuted him.

  3264. More than that,

  3265. in Christ,

3266. the Son of God has

  3267. died

  3268. for enemies.

  3269. Grace,

  3270. empathy,

  3271. well,

3272. God has entered into our suffering

3273. in the person of Jesus Christ,

  3274. sharing in our suffering,

  3275. taking on himself

3276. actually the suffering that was ours,

3277. the burden of our sin and shame.

  3278. And humility,

  3279. well how beautifully

  3280. embodied in Jesus,

3281. eating with tax collectors and sinners,

  3282. associating with lepers,

  3283. with the poor,

  3284. with the despised.

  3285. More than that,

3286. the whole experience of Jesus coming,

  3287. the incarnation,

  3288. God the Son,

  3289. lowering himself,

  3290. becoming a man,

  3291. becoming a servant.

  3292. Grace,

  3293. empathy,

  3294. humility,

3295. the love God calls us to,

  3296. mirrors the love

3297. he has already shown us.

3298. and this kind of love,

  3299. genuine love,

  3300. will ultimately win

  3301. the victory

  3302. over evil.

  3303. We're out of time,

3304. but just look at verse 21.

  3305. Paul says,

  3306. this follows

  3307. further elaboration

  3308. of the teaching

  3309. about not taking vengeance

3310. and about love for enemies.

3311. Paul says in verse 21,

  3312. do not be overcome

  3313. by evil,

  3314. but overcome evil

  3315. with good.

  3316. One of the dangers

  3317. of evil,

  3318. one of the dangers

  3319. of suffering evil,

  3320. is that we ourselves

3321. will be twisted by it.

  3322. That,

  3323. that,

  3324. that evil

  3325. will make us evil.

  3326. As if we,

3327. we need any additional help

  3328. in that department.

  3329. But Paul says,

  3330. don't be overcome

  3331. by evil,

  3332. but overcome evil

  3333. with good.

  3334. I've recently been

  3335. reading a biography

  3336. of Martin Luther King,

  3337. the,

  3338. the mid-20th century

  3339. African-American

  3340. Baptist preacher

  3341. and civil rights leader.

  3342. Now,

  3343. in,

  3344. in Martin Luther King's

  3345. personal life,

  3346. he had some major

  3347. personal failings

  3348. that I,

  3349. I think it's kind of

  3350. hard to look past.

  3351. But one thing

  3352. he absolutely understood

  3353. from the Bible

  3354. and from the example

  3355. of Jesus

  3356. is that you cannot

  3357. overcome hatred

  3358. with hatred.

  3359. And you cannot

  3360. overcome evil

  3361. with evil.

  3362. You only overcome

  3363. love.

  3364. You only,

  3365. only overcome

  3366. hate with love.

  3367. And only,

  3368. good can overcome

  3369. evil.

  3370. And,

  3371. King lived that out

  3372. personally.

  3373. So,

  3374. one convention

  3375. he was speaking

  3376. at in Birmingham

  3377. and Alabama

  3378. in,

  3379. in 1962,

  3380. a,

  3381. you know,

  3382. he's just speaking

  3383. and a man,

  3384. a,

  3385. a,

  3386. a tall,

  3387. powerfully built

  3388. white man

  3389. who was sitting

  3390. in the sixth row

  3391. hopped up,

  3392. jumped onto the stage

  3393. and just punched him

  3394. twice in the face.

  3395. And instead of resisting

  3396. Martin Luther King,

  3397. just,

  3398. he dropped his arms

3399. and as people grappled him

  3400. and,

  3401. and took him away,

  3402. he said,

  3403. don't touch him.

3404. We need to pray for him.

3405. And he called on African

  3406. Americans to,

  3407. to do the same.

  3408. The demonstrations

  3409. and marches

  3410. that he organised

  3411. were non-violent

  3412. demonstrations.

  3413. He taught people

  3414. to accept insults

  3415. and hatred

  3416. and violence

  3417. and imprisonment

  3418. as he himself did

  3419. multiple times.

  3420. To respond to hate

  3421. with love.

  3422. And eventually

  3423. it worked.

  3424. The ugliness

  3425. and evil

  3426. of racism

  3427. was exposed

  3428. for what it was.

  3429. Civil rights legislation

  3430. was passed

  3431. in the United States

  3432. and segregation

  3433. that had remained

  3434. in place

  3435. for almost a century

  3436. since emancipation

3437. began to be broken down.

  3438. Well,

  3439. God himself

  3440. won us

  3441. the same way.

  3442. God won us

  3443. not with hate

  3444. but with love.

  3445. God overcame

  3446. our evil

  3447. with his good

  3448. and our hatred

  3449. with his love.

  3450. So,

  3451. brothers and sisters,

  3452. as those

  3453. who have been

  3454. saved by God's love,

  3455. let us learn

  3456. to love

  3457. as he loved us.

  3458. let love

  3459. be genuine.

  3460. Let's pray.

  3461. Heavenly Father,

  3462. we thank you

  3463. for the lengths

  3464. your love went to

  3465. to reach us

  3466. in the sending,

  3467. the giving

  3468. of your Son

  3469. for our sins.

  3470. And so,

  3471. Father,

  3472. teach us

  3473. to love

  3474. in all the ways

  3475. described

  3476. in this passage

  3477. and many more.

  3478. that our love

  3479. might be a mirror

  3480. that reflects

  3481. your love.

  3482. In Jesus' name.

  3483. Amen.

  3484. Amen.
