-
Do you ever fall into the trap of compartmentalizing your faith from your everyday life?
-
It's easy to focus on Jesus on Sundays while the rest of the week feels completely separate.
-
Perhaps a different version of yourself comes out when you get caught up in gossip, anger, or harsh language that tears people down.
-
You might think you have control over this, but James 1.26 offers a strong warning.
-
Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
-
Worthless.
-
That is the descriptive word James uses to describe our outward faith if we claim to love Jesus while tearing others down with our words.
-
James uses a clear image here: a rein, the strap used to steer and control a powerful horse.
-
His point is simple.
-
Our words carry real power.
-
You can memorize scripture and know all of the right answers, but if you don't control what comes out of your mouth, your faith is hollow.
-
Our words directly reflect what is inside our hearts.
-
Every conversation either shows the love of Christ or misrepresents him.
-
Let's ask God to help us pull back on the reins of our speech today.
-
We praise you for showing us what it looks like to speak with grace, and we thank you for teaching us to glorify you in our everyday conversations.
-
Take a moment to praise Him for the example he set.
-
Think about your day or week ahead.
-
Where are you most tempted to lose control of your speech?
-
At work, online, at home, with family or friends.
-
Hand those specific spaces over to him right now.
-
Is there a friend or family member dealing with the painful aftermath of hurtful words spoken against them?
-
Take a moment to pray that the Holy Spirit comforts them, shields them from discouragement, and brings healing.
-
Ask God to give them a real sense of His reassurance and peace when human words have let them down.
-
Forgive us for the times we have let our words run wild, hurting others and misrepresenting your heart.
-
We hand the reins of our tongues over to you today.
-
May the words of our mouths be pleasing to you.
-
Amen.
