  1. Yesterday, as I was about an hour before the first

  2. service on Saturday, I was finishing up my message and

  3. I'd spent about 18 hours on it and my computer

  4. froze up and I lost all my teaching notes. Now,

  5. there was about a 30 minute period of panic where

  6. I wondered, am I gonna have anything to say, or

  7. are we just gonna sing some extra verses of songs tomorrow? Fortunately,

  8. RJ Hughes, the wonder kind workaround artist on our staff,

  9. once again saved the day. He was able to recover

  10. about a third, not the whole thing, about a third

  11. of the message and I could reformat at least a

  12. third of it, I immediately gave him a raise of

  13. $ 1 million on a staff. Now, my computer had been

  14. sluggish for some period of time. And it finally just

  15. stopped working because too many programs were clogging up the

  16. system and the screen froze and then all of a

  17. sudden you start getting all these error messages going, you know, error, error,

  18. and they start piling up and finally it just freezes.

  19. Now you've had this happen with your computer and there's

  20. only one thing to do. Hit the reset button. Okay, reboot.

  21. When in doubt, reboot. My computer needed a clean memory.

  22. It needed a fresh start. It needed a reset. Now

  23. people are like that. Because we all live complicated lives.

  24. You have a complicated life, I have a complicated life.

  25. And there are a lot of different programs running in

  26. your life, running in your brain, running in your body.

  27. And after a while, those programs can be so overloading

  28. and conflicting that you quickly find yourself on overload. You

  29. know what I'm talking about? In your life, and you

  30. just feel like you're on overload because you start getting

  31. error messages in your brain. And when that happens, what

  32. you need is a life reboot. You need a fresh

  33. reset of your life, a fresh start. You need a

  34. clean slate. And actually, you're gonna need resets in your

  35. life many, many times, not just one time in your life.

  36. And you're gonna need resets in different areas of your life,

  37. your career, your marriage, your education, your finances. You need

  38. a fresh start, a clean slate. That's what Jesus Christ

  39. came to do. is to offer you a fresh start.

  40. If you were to ask me to sum up what

  41. Saddleback Church is all about and has been about now

  42. for decades, the goal of Saddleback Church, I could summarize

  43. the goal of this church in two words. We are

  44. about changed lives. That's it. Everything we do in this

  45. church is about changed lives. We are in the changed

  46. life business. The transformation of lives. Helping people become what

  47. God always intended them to be. The transformation of life.

  48. And Saddleback is not about buildings. It's not about our size.

  49. It's not about music. It's not about the messages. It's

  50. about changed lives. People wanna go where their lives get changed.

  51. And when we want our church to be known for

  52. or not, oh, they got great music or they got

  53. a beautiful facility or whatever. We want them to be,

  54. that's where you go if you want your life changed. Now,

  55. this transformation has many, many different kinds of names. It's

  56. called salvation, when you first step across the line to

  57. open your life to the love of God. It's called sanctification,

  58. which are the steps you go in growth and maturity

  59. as you become the woman God wants you to be

  60. or the man God wants you to be. That's called Sanctification.

  61. It's called conversion, a fresh start. It's called starting over.

  62. It's called being born again. It's called getting a new life,

  63. having a life reset, a fresh start. And in the

  64. history of our church family, Saddleback, hundreds of thousands of

  65. people have had a spiritual reset in their lives over

  66. the last four plus decades. Most of you could tell

  67. your own story of transformation. My life changed, God changed

  68. my life, Christ changed my life through Saddleback Church in

  69. this way or that way or this way or that way.

  70. This last week, I receive a lot of letters all

  71. the time, but always after Easter, I receive letters from

  72. many of the 38,000 people who attended an Easter service

  73. last weekend at one of our Saddleback campuses. And I

  74. wanna read you just one typical letter because it sets

  75. up where I want us to go in this new

  76. series called Resetting Your Life. Here's the letter. First time

  77. attender last week. Dear Pastor Rick, I've known about Saddleback

  78. Church for about 15 years. And I was always curious

  79. about why it attracted so many people. But I had

  80. never attended a service until a friend invited me to

  81. last week's Easter service. So I went out of curiosity. Honestly,

  82. I was not prepared for what I experienced. Everybody was smiling.

  83. Everybody was smiling. They were so happy and joyful and welcoming.

  84. And the love on their faces immediately put me at ease,

  85. even though I'd never been in church. But when the

  86. people started singing with all their hearts, tears instantly started

  87. flowing down my face. Do you realize that when you

  88. sing like you just did, Jesus Christ, my living hope,

  89. just a second ago, with all your heart, you are preaching,

  90. you are proclaiming the love of God. When you sing

  91. in church, you are witnessing to the people around you.

  92. They may not hear your voice, but they can see

  93. your face and they can see the intensity of how

  94. you mean thank you God for all you've done in

  95. my life. You are a witness every time you sing

  96. with gratitude. Said, when the people began started singing with

  97. all their hearts, tears instantly started flowing down my face.

  98. I didn't know any of the songs, but the way

  99. that the people sang them stunned me. I could feel God.

  100. for the first time in my life. I didn't understand it,

  101. but I instantly realized that I had been missing out

  102. on something I desperately needed. Then Pastor Rick, you spoke

  103. about God's love and God's purpose and how God wants

  104. everybody in his family. I took it all in with

  105. great wonder. And at the close of the service, When

  106. you led everybody in a prayer, I prayed it too.

  107. And while I was saying those simple words, the tears

  108. returned and I felt overwhelmed by God's love for me.

  109. Pastor Rick, I don't know what my next step should be,

  110. but I do know this. that the direction of my

  111. life was reset in that moment. Please help me now

  112. to know what to do next. Now what caught my

  113. attention with that letter, and that's just one of many,

  114. what caught my attention was how this person used the

  115. word reset. In a single moment, the direction of my

  116. life was reset. I was going this way, hopelessness, doubt, fear, despair.

  117. This way, now I'm going to hope, purpose, meaning, significance.

  118. The direction went from guilt to forgiveness. I went from

  119. anger to peace. These kind of directional changes happen all

  120. the time. They are a spiritual reset in people's lives,

  121. and it's happened literally hundreds of thousands of times in

  122. our church family. That caught my attention, that word reset.

  123. Because I told you that I've been going up to

  124. a clinic near Stanford University up in the Silicon Valley

  125. where a team of doctors has been studying why I

  126. had constant pain in my body literally for months. And

  127. they're trying to figure out the cure for it. And

  128. evidently it's something rare, I don't even know. But at

  129. the first meeting with all those doctors at that clinic,

  130. I asked the lead doctor, so doc, what exactly are

  131. you trying to accomplish here? And he looked at me

  132. and he said, Pastor Rick, we intend to reset your health.

  133. He said, we're gonna reset your health. And we're gonna

  134. use a number of different biological tools that we didn't

  135. even have 10 years ago to reset your health. And

  136. I heard that word reset again. And I thought, hey,

  137. that's great. I'm all in for a biological reset and

  138. while you're at it, can you make me 30 years

  139. younger and give me breath Pitt's face? I mean, let's

  140. just do a total makeover. That's the new Ricky Warren. Now,

  141. a year ago, some of you may remember that when

  142. COVID started, The restrictions ended and we were able to

  143. start meeting outside, down the hill. And at the very

  144. beginning of that, I did a single message on this theme, reset.

  145. I wanna come back to it and actually do a

  146. whole series on it now. But I did a series,

  147. a message, and I said, we've had this timeout during

  148. COVID and God doesn't want you to simply resume your

  149. old way of living now that COVID is winding down.

  150. He doesn't want you to resume your old way of living.

  151. Instead of resuming the old, God wants to reset our

  152. lives in a new and a higher dimension. So, starting

  153. this weekend, our preaching team, Pastor Tom, Pastor Buddy, and

  154. I are gonna begin a series called Restarting My Life.

  155. And if you look at your notes, the notes that

  156. are inside your program, the definition of reset is to

  157. make a fresh start, the opportunity to make a fresh start,

  158. or to begin again. Now that's something Jesus Christ specializes in.

  159. He gives people fresh starts, start over, begin again all

  160. the time. The S in our name, you know, S-A-D-D-L-E-B-A-C-K,

  161. every one of those letters represent a value of this church.

  162. And the first value, S, is second chance place of grace.

  163. If you've messed up, this is the place to start over.

  164. This is a place for imperfect people who want a

  165. fresh start, a reset, a rebooting of their life. Now

  166. there's tons and tons of verses in the Bible about

  167. God wanting to give you a restart, a reboot, a refresh,

  168. and a new beginning in any area of your life.

  169. And you'll need these many times in your life. We're

  170. gonna look at all of those verses in the weeks ahead,

  171. but let me just give you one of them Right here,

  172. at the top of your outline, Ephesians chapter four says this.

  173. You've learned the truth that is in Jesus. Jesus said,

  174. I'm the way, the truth, and the life. You've learned

  175. the truth and you've stepped across the line. Now, so,

  176. in regards to your former way of life, that means

  177. before you had Jesus in your heart, before you knew

  178. the Lord, your former life, before you were a believer,

  179. He said, in regard to your former way of life,

  180. put off your old self and be made new in

  181. the attitudes of your mind and put on your new self,

  182. created to be like God, truly good and holy. Now,

  183. this is, God's saying here that once you've invited Jesus

  184. into your life and you've put your trust in him,

  185. then there's a process of growth and change and growing

  186. and becoming and resetting every area of your life. And

  187. he says it's kinda like changing your clothes, where you

  188. take off some stuff and you put on some stuff.

  189. You take off all the old clothes that are smelly

  190. and sweaty and dirty, take off the old clothes and

  191. you get rid of those, and you put on some

  192. new clothes which are fresh and smell good and make

  193. you feel good too. He said there's some things you

  194. should take off, there's some things you should put on.

  195. deal with this now for several weeks. How do I

  196. do a life reset? Whether you're in retirement or whether

  197. you're at midlife or whether you're just starting out and

  198. you're in your 20s or your teens, there are different

  199. times in your life you're gonna need to do a reset.

  200. Now today, what I'm gonna just do, we're not gonna

  201. go over the steps of how to reset your life.

  202. That'll take us weeks to do that. But in this point,

  203. I want us to look at the four preparation steps.

  204. In other words, these are preliminary things you need to

  205. do to get ready for a major reset in your life.

  206. Number one, start asking God to do something new in me.

  207. I start asking God to do something new in me.

  208. And you don't just ask him once. You show that

  209. you mean business by asking him more than once, by

  210. repeatedly bringing your request to God. You know, any parent

  211. knows that when at Christmas time a child says, I

  212. want this for Christmas, if they only mention it one time,

  213. they don't really want it. They have to say it

  214. three or four times, then you go, now this is

  215. the difference between a whim and a genuine want. Okay,

  216. and God says, are you serious about changing your life?

  217. Are you serious about being a different guy, a different gal,

  218. a man of God, a woman of God? Are you

  219. serious about breaking some of those bad habits in your life?

  220. I need you to tell me. Now, you might wonder,

  221. is it okay for me to ask God to do

  222. something new in my life? God, I want you to

  223. do something new, something fresh, something different, something unique in

  224. my life. Can you do that? Yes, in fact, it's

  225. in the job description of Jesus Christ. First verse there

  226. under that point, Revelation 21, Jesus says, I am making

  227. everything old. No, that's not what he says, is it?

  228. I'm making everything boring. I'm making everything the same. No,

  229. he said, I'm making everything what?

  230. New.

  231. This is what he does. Jesus transforms life. So, if

  232. you're tired of your old way of living, this is

  233. the guy you come to. I make everything new. Now,

  234. a good prayer that you could pray is the one

  235. that David prayed in Psalm 51. And in Psalm 51,

  236. he asked God to create a new heart in him,

  237. create a clean spirit, do some new work in him.

  238. And in Psalm 51, verse 10, I love this verse,

    Psalms 51:10

  239. particularly in the message paraphrase where David says this. God,

  240. make a fresh start in me. I like that. Shape

  241. a Genesis week from the chaos in my life. You

  242. need this verse. Make a fresh start in me. Shape

  243. a new creation from the chaos of my life. You

  244. might wanna write that on a little card and put

  245. it on your refrigerator and memorize that verse this week. Now,

  246. it's not only a good prayer to be the start

  247. of asking God to do something new in your life,

  248. but it's also significant even more when you realize that

  249. David wrote this after stealing another man's wife and having

  250. the man, the husband, murdered. We got a little bit

  251. different context now. David has created two of the top

  252. sins up there, adultery and murder. And he's saying, God,

  253. I need you to make a fresh start in me,

  254. shape a Genesis, weaken the chaos of my life. What

  255. that implies is really quite good news. What it implies

  256. is that you are never too far gone for God's grace,

  257. for God's forgiveness. You can't do a bad enough thing

  258. that God's gonna say, time out, you don't get any

  259. more chances. This is a message of grace. God, do

  260. something new in me. I have so messed it up,

  261. so screwed up my life, so made a fiasco of everything.

  262. and I've done this sin and this one and this

  263. one and this one and this one, but I need

  264. a fresh start. I don't care what you've done. I

  265. don't care who you've done it with and I don't

  266. care how long you've done it. You can get a

  267. fresh start and a life reset starting today if you'll

  268. come to God and the first preliminary is to just say, God,

  269. I need a fresh start. I'm carrying too much baggage,

  270. I'm carrying too much sin, I'm carrying too much guilt,

  271. I'm carrying too many regrets. Listen, your past is past.

  272. It's over. Did you do some dumb things? Yes, but

  273. you can't change that. You are a product of your past,

  274. but you are not a prisoner of your past. You

  275. might write that one down. In fact, you might tweet

  276. that one. Rick says, You're a product of your past.

  277. You have been shaped by the good and the bad

  278. and the ugly things in your life. But you're not

  279. a prisoner of it. You can change. That's the gospel.

  280. That's the good news. That's what Christianity's all about. There

  281. can be pushing the reset button. And I get a

  282. second chance. I get a new life. I get born again.

  283. I get new freedom. And I can get a second

  284. chance and a third chance and on and on. Now

  285. here's what God says about your past. Are you listening?

  286. Isaiah 43, verse 18 and 19. Here's what God says

    Isaiah 43:18

  287. about your past. Forget the former things and do not

  288. dwell on the past, whether it's good or bad. Instead,

  289. God says, look at the new things I'm going to do.

  290. They're already starting to happen. Can you see what I've

  291. begun to do? God says, I don't want you constantly

  292. looking in the rearview mirror. If you're always looking in

  293. the rearview mirror, you're going to crack up while you're driving.

  294. The only way you can drive effectively is look to

  295. the future. Not look at what's behind you, but look

  296. to the future. All of the rest of your life

  297. is in the future, not in the past. As I said,

  298. your past is past. So don't dwell on it. Start

  299. asking God to do something new in me. Do you

  300. know why nothing's happening new in your life right now?

  301. Because you're not asking. Look at the next verse. James

  302. chapter four, verse two. You do not have what you

  303. want because you don't what? Ask God for it. Circle

  304. that start. You don't have it because you don't ask

  305. for it. Have you ever asked God for a reset

  306. in your life? God, I need a fresh start. I've

  307. blown it. I've made a big mistake. Mistakes, plural. And

  308. I need a fresh start. I need a new start.

  309. I need a revamping. I need to reboot my life.

  310. This is the first preparation step. You're gonna have to

  311. start asking God, God, I want you to do something

  312. new in my life. And I pray that in the

  313. weeks ahead during this series, you're gonna be praying this

  314. prayer every day. And I want you to pray it

  315. every day this week. I want you to, when you

  316. think about it, go, God, would you do something new

  317. in my life? Would you do something fresh in my life?

  318. Would you give me a fresh start? Would you give

  319. me a renewed energy, renewed spirit, renewed hope and heart?

  320. The first step in preparation is to ask God for

  321. a reset. Here's the second thing in preparation. These are preliminaries.

  322. Pinpoint specifically what I want changed in me. That's the

  323. second thing you do. If you wanna get a brand

  324. new start in life, pinpoint specifically what I want changed

  325. in me. Nothing becomes transforming until it becomes specific. You

  326. don't just say, God, I want you to change me.

  327. And God's gonna say, specifically, what do you have in mind?

  328. Change what? What do you want changed, okay? You can't

  329. change a generality. So don't just say, God, change me.

  330. Don't say change, you have to clarify, you have to identify,

  331. you have to decide where you wanna be different, as

  332. a man or as a woman. Where do I wanna

  333. be different? You see, you cannot solve any problem, obviously,

  334. till first you identify it as a problem. Do you

  335. know the problems in your life? Or are you just

  336. still in denial about them all? You gotta identify the

  337. problems in your life. You gotta clarify the problems in

  338. your life. You gotta admit that they are problems in

  339. your life. Oh no, I'm not really in debt. Oh no,

  340. I'm not really habitually procrastinating. Whatever. No, I don't need

  341. help in an area. Well then you'll be helpless. Now

  342. the more specific you are about what you want God

  343. to change in your life, the easier it's gonna be

  344. for God to do it and to help you and

  345. to do it faster. Now what I've done on your

  346. message notes is I've created a little checklist to jog

  347. your memory. Where do I need help? What would I

  348. like to change in my life? What are the things

  349. in my life, relationships or whatever, that I'm dissatisfied with?

  350. I just not cook them on all burners. I'm not

  351. on all the cylinders. So I wanna do, this is

  352. worth it for us to take some time right now

  353. in this service. This may be one of the most

  354. important things you do this week is to take this

  355. personal inventory right now. The Bible says, In 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  356. chapter 13, verse five, look closely at yourself. That means

  357. do a little self-examination. Test yourselves to see if you're

  358. really living in the faith, okay? So here are a

  359. dozen or so areas. Let's look at these. Where do

  360. I need a reset? What would I like God to

  361. change in my life, to give me a fresh start?

  362. How about in my connection to God? So how do

  363. I know if I need a reset there? Has there

  364. ever been a time in your life when you felt

  365. closer to God than you do right now? If the

  366. answer is yes, you need a reset. You need a reboot.

  367. You need a reconnection. So you need to check that box, yes.

  368. If you say I've never been closer to God than

  369. I am right now, you don't need to check that one. Copacetic,

  370. you're a-okay. How about, do I need a reset in

  371. my health and body? Like the doctors are trying to

  372. do with me right now. Do you need help in

  373. your metabolism, in some area of your chronic illness or something?

  374. You mean I could ask God about that? Of course

  375. you can. Do I need a reset in my priorities?

  376. Are your priorities out of whack? And things that really

  377. aren't important, all of a sudden you're spending all your

  378. time doing those and the things that are really important,

  379. you're not doing those, that's your, I need a reset

  380. in my priorities. Okay, check that one. How about a relationship?

  381. Do you have a relationship, boyfriend, girlfriend, friend, or whatever,

  382. and you're going, it's stagnating, or it may be deteriorating.

  383. Do I need a reset in that relationship? How about

  384. in your energy level? He said, I'm finding it going

  385. lower and lower. Do I need to restart there? How

  386. about in your career? In my career or in my job?

  387. If you're out of work right now, you need to restart.

  388. If you just got laid off or fired, you're out

  389. of work, you need to restart there. How about in

  390. my thought life? I'm having thoughts that I don't like.

  391. I can't control them. They scare me. They're the wrong

  392. kind of thoughts. I shouldn't have these kind of thoughts.

  393. And they bother me, check that. Do I need a

  394. reset in my marriage? No marriage ever stands still. At

  395. every point in your marriage, you're either growing closer together

  396. or you're drifting further apart. No marriage just stands still.

  397. So if you're not growing closer together, you're drifting apart.

  398. And maybe you need a reset in your marriage. I

  399. need to re-fall in love. I've had to re-fall in

  400. love with my wife many, many times. in almost 47

  401. years of marriage. You just have to re-up and recommit.

  402. How about in your routines? Are your routines out of whack?

  403. The routine I'm in right now, it started during COVID,

  404. it's not helping me. And I need to change my routine,

  405. I need to reset there. Maybe you need to check

  406. that one. Or how about habits? Do I need to

  407. replace some bad habits with some good habits? How about

  408. in my parenting? Some of you need to reset in

  409. your parenting. And right now, you need to reset a

  410. relationship with one of your kids. They may be an

  411. adult child, but you're out of whack with them. And

  412. you need to reset in that relationship. You check that one.

  413. How about in my time and my schedule? Have you

  414. figured out that it's easier to fill your schedule than

  415. to fulfill your schedule? Have you discovered that it's easier

  416. to get in to something rather than to get out

  417. of it? It's easier to commit than to actually fulfill.

  418. And you say, my time's out of control, my schedule's

  419. out of control, I'm always pressured, I'm always late, whatever.

  420. You check that one, I need to reset there. How

  421. about in your self-confidence? You say, why would I need

  422. to reset my self-confidence? Well, if you've just experienced a

  423. major rejection, you probably do. If you've been rejected at work,

  424. or you've been rejected by a friend, or a parent,

  425. or a lover, you've been rejected by your spouse or somebody,

  426. anytime you have rejection, your self-confidence takes a hit. And

  427. you say, I need to reset that, Lord, in my life.

  428. How about finances? Am I in denial about all the

  429. debt that I'm in? I'm just pretending it's not really there?

  430. Or do I need to reset in my dream? Now

  431. what we're gonna do, I told you, this week is

  432. just an introduction. In the weeks ahead, we are going

  433. to cover many of these areas in detail. So I

  434. don't want you to miss any of the messages in

  435. this series on resetting my life, because this is news

  436. you can use. Now, before we move on, I need

  437. to say a word to a special group of you.

  438. And that is the few of you who just now,

  439. as I went through that list, did not check a

  440. single box. Really? You're that perfect? You're in such denial

  441. you couldn't even find a single box to check? Hello?

  442. You gotta touch with, you must be Jesus, you're so perfect.

  443. Why don't you come up here and just take over

  444. and you start teaching, because I would certainly like to

  445. learn from somebody who's perfect. You can't find a single

  446. thing that you said, yeah, I need help in that area.

  447. If not, it's a desperate time for you. The most

  448. desperate thing is when you're out of touch with the

  449. reality in your life. And the Bible says the heart's deceitful,

  450. which means you lie to yourself more than you lie

  451. to anybody else. And for those of you who didn't

  452. check a single box, this is what God says to you,

  453. next verse. Romans 12, three. Do not think you are

  454. better than your really are. Decide what you really are

  455. by the amount of faith that God has given you.

  456. So I wanna highly recommend, even if you use false humility,

  457. go back and check a few things. Because trust me,

  458. you're not perfect. Trust me, there's things on that list

  459. that need a reset in your life. And if you

  460. don't understand that, you really are out of touch with

  461. your own self. Because nobody's perfect, we're all flawed. We

  462. know that, God knows that, and actually you know it,

  463. but you're just trying to tell yourself something different. You rationalize.

  464. You know what rationalize means? You tell yourself rational lies.

  465. You tell yourself in your mind, what your heart is

  466. telling you is wrong and your mind's like, it's okay,

  467. it's not. Now, in this brief intro to the series

  468. we're gonna go into, I wanted you to hear a

  469. real life example of somebody who had their life reset

  470. and where we're going. So I want you to hear

  471. the story of Alice Park. Would you give her a

  472. warm welcome?

  473. Welcome, Alice.

  474. Hi, my name is Alice.

  475. Pastor Rick asked me to share my story of how

  476. God helped me reset my life when I put all

  477. my life into his hands. It happened when I got

  478. serious about learning and applying the principles of change and

  479. recovery found in God's word. I can honestly tell you

  480. that my reset and recovery has brought positive changes in

  481. my life that I never imagined could happen to me

  482. and in me. Born in Los Angeles, I grew up

  483. in a loving Korean-American Christian home. But as the third

  484. of four children, I often felt out of place, like

  485. the ugly duckling. I wasn't as pretty as my smart

  486. older sister who became a successful doctor. And I wasn't

  487. the youngest, like my baby brother, who seemed to me

  488. to get so much more favor and attention. And lastly,

  489. I was outranked by my older brother, who was, dramatic pause,

  490. the firstborn son. In Korean culture, that is the premier

  491. position with high expectations. My siblings were taller than me,

  492. they were more attractive, they seemed more attractive to me.

  493. And to top it off, The real stinger was that

  494. they all had bigger eyes.

  495. Now that may not.

  496. Seem like a big deal to you, but I envy

  497. is real for many of us Asians. I yearned for

  498. my parents' undivided attention and resented that they gave more

  499. attention to our family's dry cleaning business. They were always busy.

  500. In reality, they were just trying to make ends meet,

  501. but growing up, I compartmentalized my pain, resentment, and fears,

  502. even repressing a family secret of my own sexual abuse

  503. as a child. And that secret really blurred my boundaries.

  504. By college, I had become a pro at ignoring my feelings,

  505. struggling with poor boundaries and codependency.

  506. Low self-worth was the.

  507. Core of my life. So I became a professional people pleaser.

  508. I tried to please people, but I didn't actually trust

  509. them at all because of all the ways that I'd

  510. been hurt. And I didn't trust God either because I

  511. doubted that God thought much of me seeing all of

  512. my bad choices. All my suppressed pain led to a

  513. lot of bad decisions, including getting stuck in a destructive, codependent,

  514. and verbally abusive relationship, which resulted in an unplanned pregnancy

  515. and unwanted abortion. But God had not forgotten me. During

  516. my low point, God led me to discover Saddleback Church.

  517. And it was large enough for me to hide in

  518. the back, but I also felt deeply loved here in

  519. this church family. Pastor Rick told us that every week. Still,

  520. I was numbing myself with promiscuity, bad relationships, and spending

  521. myself into deep debt.

  522. I managed to get two.

  523. More graduate degrees, but then when I got pregnant again

  524. with the same person, believing this time would be different,

  525. that relationship quickly unraveled and deteriorated into physical abuse. That

  526. abuse just piled on more shame and self-loathing. I desperately

  527. needed a reset in my life. Then, in September 2007,

  528. I gave birth to my beautiful daughter, who God used

  529. to change the trajectory of my life.

  530. I knew I.

  531. Needed change, but I didn't know how. And I didn't

  532. have the power to do it. Of course, being part

  533. of this Saddleback Church family, I had heard of Celebrate Recovery,

  534. which was created by John Baker and Pastor Rick. But

  535. I had never considered that the CR family could help

  536. me reset my life. I held the common misconception that

  537. CR was only for people struggling with addictions, certainly not me. Also,

  538. I had not yet specifically identified what.

  539. I wanted to change in me.

  540. But one day, I heard someone share how they had

  541. experienced a recovery from both a hurtful relationship and from

  542. financial debt at Celebrate Recovery. And that spoke to my

  543. needs and it changed my perception of what CR could do.

  544. I had just come out of another failed relationship, was

  545. struggling at work, feeling anxious, stressed, and overwhelmed all the time.

  546. I couldn't fathom a way out of my financial mess.

  547. I was stuck in repeating cycles of pain that continued

  548. year after year. I was desperate for change and ready

  549. to try.

  550. Anything.

  551. So I humbly asked God to do something different in

  552. my life. And I started attending a Celebrate Recovery step

  553. study group. At that time, I was uncertain of what

  554. I was saying yes to. But that small step became

  555. the most transformative decision of my life. It began the

  556. healing journey of resetting my life. God replaced my hurt

  557. with healing. And then he replaced my pressure with peace.

  558. And finally, he reset my resentment with restoration.

  559. Through studying and.

  560. Applying God's word to my life in the fellowship of CR,

  561. I gained the power to face the chaos and destruction

  562. that my poor choices kept creating in my life. My emotions, finances,

  563. and even physical health began improving when I started practicing

  564. God's principles. my old habits of people pleasing, always trying

  565. to control and fix everything, and staying in an abusive

  566. relationship out of fear. These powerful patterns began to break

  567. and change. With God's help, I faced the bucket of

  568. wounds of my past. I identified my emotional triggers and

  569. I learned.

  570. How to say no.

  571. Not only did I become more healthy, so did my

  572. relationship with my daughter. I wasn't parenting her with an

  573. empty heart and I was so grateful to God that

  574. He loved me at my worst and led me to

  575. our Saddleback family and Celebrate Recovery. I am now doing

  576. life together with my dearest friends. I'm also enjoying an

  577. intimate relationship with Jesus. I can now feel His love

  578. and I'm learning to base my identity and self-worth, how

  579. my heavenly Father sees me instead of who the world

  580. says I am or what I do. And this is

  581. also a pressure reliever. God's principles in CR helped me

  582. out of my denial of my deep financial debt. I

  583. surrendered my finances to God and asked him to do

  584. a reset in that area too. Doing it God's way,

  585. I put him first in my finances. I started tithing

  586. and budgeting consistently. And now I'm closer to being debt-free

  587. than I've ever been. In closing, Let me say that

  588. I don't know the struggle that you are going through

  589. right now, but I have learned that you are not

  590. going to get better on your own.

  591. We need each other.

  592. One of Saddleback's slogans is we are better together, and

  593. that is 100% true. Staying connected to our church family

  594. and to my CR family has proven to be a

  595. lifeline for me through job losses, my breast cancer diagnosis

  596. in 2018, the COVID pandemic, and many other rough spots.

  597. I'm never going back to that old way of living.

  598. So if you're looking for a safe place that offers

  599. non-judgmental love as you let God do a reset in you,

  600. I can testify that Saddleback and CR are places of

  601. true healing and hope. We want you and we want

  602. you to join us in the journey to healing and wholeness,

  603. regardless of what problems you bring with you. And we

  604. meet right here on Friday nights at 7 p.m. That's

  605. my plug. The love and grace and power of Jesus

  606. Christ has reset my life and recovered my joy. And

  607. it's available to you too. So come and join us

  608. and God will bless you too.

  609. Thank you.

  610. Wow, that was great. Fantastic. Fantastic. All right, so this

  611. weekend we're just identifying the four preliminary steps for a

  612. total reset of your life, okay? Number one, start asking God,

  613. I want you every day this week, pray this prayer. God,

  614. do something new and fresh in my life. Just start

  615. praying that every day. God, I want you to do

  616. something new, something fresh, something unique in my life. Step two,

  617. I want you to spend some time pinpointing specifically what

  618. you want changed in your life. Now the last two

  619. steps real quick. Third step, preparation. Find some people to

  620. support my reset. You wanna find some people to support

  621. my reset. You can't do this by yourself. Something as

  622. big as a total life change, a reboot, a reset,

  623. you're not gonna do it on your own. If you could,

  624. you would, but you can't, so you won't. You haven't

  625. done it because you've tried in the past by yourself.

  626. You need other people in your life. God has wired

  627. us so that we don't get better, we don't get healthy,

  628. we don't get whole and healed until we get other

  629. people involved in our lives, why? that requires humility. It

  630. means you need other people. As long as you think

  631. you can do it on your own, have it your way.

  632. It's not gonna work. It hasn't worked so far, it's

  633. not gonna work in the future. You need other people

  634. in your life. That's why we talk about small groups

  635. all the time at Saddleback. This church is built on

  636. small groups. It's more important than the weekend. We have

  637. over 7,000 small groups right now meeting in homes and

  638. offices and places In 193, 196 cities in Southern California

  639. from Malibu to San Diego, every city in Southern California

  640. has Saddleback Small Groups in it. And so, don't tell

  641. me I can't find one. I'll find one for you.

  642. If you wanna start your own group, Get some friends, great.

  643. So I don't have any friends. I will buy you

  644. some friends. I've told you this many times. I have influence.

  645. I can buy you some friends. Now why is it

  646. important to find some people to support my reset? Couple

  647. of verses, look at this verse. The Bible says in

  648. Ecclesiastes chapter four, a person can stand alone, standing alone

  649. can be attacked and defeated. But two can stand back

  650. to back and conquer And three are even better, for

  651. a triple braided cord is not easily broken. Two people

  652. working together, you're not gonna be defeated. Three people, that's

  653. even better. Four people's even better than that. A small

  654. group is what we're talking about. Look at the next verse.

  655. If one person falls, another can reach out and help.

  656. But people who are alone when they fall are in

  657. real trouble. You will fall in your reset. You will

  658. make mistakes. You're not perfect, none of us are. and

  659. in your desire to be a different kind of man,

  660. the man that God wants, to be a different kind

  661. of woman, the godly woman that God created you to be,

  662. you're gonna fall. You're gonna make mistakes. You need other

  663. people in your life who are just gonna love you

  664. through that, carry you through it, help you through it.

  665. You need a small group. Write this down. Community is

  666. God's antidote to discouragement and defeat and failure. If you're discouraged,

  667. I know why. You're not in community. You're not in

  668. a small group all the time. If you feel defeated,

  669. if you feel like a failure, it's because you don't

  670. have people around you who are giving you a true perspective.

  671. I'm not a really good judge of myself. You aren't

  672. a really good judge of you. You need people in

  673. your life who can see what you can't see. You're

  674. a terrible judge of yourself. Now, the Bible says this

  675. is particularly true for those of us who are Christians,

  676. Romans 12 five, since we're all in one body in Christ,

  677. we belong to each other and each of us needs

  678. each other. Do you realize that in the body of Christ,

  679. in the family of God, you belong to me and

  680. I belong to you. And the other people on your

  681. row who belong to the family of God are your

  682. brothers and your sisters and that relationship is actually longer

  683. lasting than your family relationship. Your physical family, it's not

  684. gonna last. People grow up, they get married, they form

  685. their own families, they divorce, they separate, they die. Physical

  686. families don't last, but your spiritual family is gonna last

  687. for eternity, which means that your connection and your commitment

  688. to other believers in God's family should be stronger than

  689. any other commitment. political commitment, a financial commitment, a business commitment,

  690. your commitment to the body of Christ is more important

  691. because it's the only relationship that's gonna last forever. I'm

  692. a six foot two tall white American male, overweight. Now,

  693. You would think that I would have most in common

  694. with other six-foot-tall to male white Americans who vote like

  695. I do. But actually, God says, I have more in

  696. common with Alice, who is short Asian female. And my

  697. commitment to her is actually greater than the people who

  698. look like me, come from my background, and vote like me.

  699. Does that make sense? And as a brother to my

  700. sister in Christ, I am, if you mess with her,

  701. you hurt her, then you're gonna mess with me, because

  702. I'm her brother. And if you put her down, I'm

  703. not gonna let you put her down. because we're in

  704. the family of God. And that's a different kind of

  705. loyalty that you may have never thought of before, but

  706. God says, if you're my child, I expect you to

  707. be more loyal to your brothers and sisters than to

  708. people who think like you, look like you, act like you,

  709. or have the same background as you do. That makes sense,

  710. but it's a new way of thinking. So Hebrews 10,

    Hebrews 10:25

  711. verse 25, let us not give up the habit, circle

  712. the word habit, Let us not give up the habit

  713. of meeting together. Instead, let us encourage one another. Why

  714. do we meet together in small groups? To encourage each other. Now,

  715. let's be honest. COVID was a small group killer. It

  716. was a church attendance killer. We didn't even meet for

  717. a year and a half. And a lot of those

  718. people got out of the habit of coming to church

  719. or being in a group. Some of you have been

  720. in small groups in the past, but you're not in

  721. an active one right now. Now's the time to get

  722. back involved. Let us not give up the habit of

  723. being together in a group. Why? That's where you get

  724. the encouragement. Now you heard one testimony, but I wanted

  725. you to hear just a few more. And this is

  726. part of a video clip of Celebrate Recovery. Watch this

  727. on the screen.

  728. I thought CR would be a great way to combine

  729. my recovery with my Christianity. I quickly discovered that there

  730. were issues that I was not aware of that were

  731. making my life unmanageable.

  732. Inside, I was unraveling.

  733. Resentments and fears were building, and the solutions I had

  734. used in the past no longer worked. Everything I tried

  735. was to.

  736. No avail, and I was hopeless.

  737. That hopelessness brought me out of denial and into willingness.

  738. a willingness to try God and the steps and principles

  739. of recovery.

  740. You know, I was struggling, and a lot of times

  741. I never wanted to show up, but I showed up,

  742. I suited up, and I booted up, and I spilled.

  743. When those times are you feel like you didn't want

  744. to go, you'll find you have a lot to say.

  745. God helped me, not when things got better in my

  746. life or when I cleaned up or got religious, but

  747. it was when I was at my worst and lowest

  748. point that God helped me.

  749. As we say in Celebrate Recovery, God never wastes a hurt.

  750. God has taken my pain and brought good out of it.

  751. He can do that for you too, no matter what

  752. your issue is. I don't fully understand how Celebrate Recovery works.

  753. I just know that it does. And there are thousands

  754. of people whose lives have been changed through Celebrate Recovery.

  755. God wants to do a miracle in each of you.

  756. Don't stop before.

  757. Your miracle happens.

  758. It was in Celebrate Recovery that God began healing me

  759. from some of the worst parts of myself that led

  760. to my addictions and convictions. If I had to wait

  761. for recovery and healing until after I got my life

  762. cleaned up, the true healing would never have happened.

  763. You know, I'm just a normal guy who had a

  764. lot of luggage, who had a lot of pain. And ultimately,

  765. I was able to release all that pain with the

  766. step work that I've done. I found that with time,

  767. I became a better father, better husband, just a better.

  768. Leader in my community.

  769. Even though attending Saddleback Church for the past 10 years,

  770. I didn't realize how Christ worked in my life until

  771. I entered CR. I could talk to others about my secrets, shame.

  772. Most importantly, I was not alone in this anymore.

  773. When I heard the shares of the other women, I

  774. couldn't believe how similar our stories were, mainly the struggles.

  775. different backgrounds, similar struggles, and one common solution, that our

  776. hope is in Jesus Christ. Now that is a beautiful thing.

  777. It led me to people who knew and understood the

  778. pain I was in and the way through to freedom.

  779. Sometimes they led. Sometimes they pushed. This recovery journey is simple,

  780. yet not easy. And I'm grateful I don't have to

  781. do it alone.

  782. I considered quitting many times.

  783. As a single mom, I didn't feel like I had

  784. the time to make it to meetings week after week.

  785. And it could be emotionally draining doing the deep work.

  786. But my first sponsor encouraged me to keep going and reminded.

  787. Me that I can't afford to quit.

  788. If I want to break the cycle and be better

  789. for my daughter.

  790. This kept me coming back then and keeps me coming

  791. back today.

  792. Celebrate Recovery is much more than a way to combine

  793. my faith and my recovery. For me, it's real church.

  794. It's the way God intended it to be, where it's

  795. okay if I'm not okay, and I'm free to let

  796. God work on the messy parts of my life. It's

  797. also a safe place to let other people know the

  798. real me without judgment.

  799. Okay. All right, so.

  800. If you're serious about having a total life reset, I

  801. mean getting a fresh start, okay, you're gonna need to

  802. get in a group. Get in a small group, a

  803. celebrate recovery group, some kind of group here at Saddleback

  804. will help you do that in a day's head. You

  805. can't do this on your own. Here's the fourth preliminary.

  806. Eliminate anything unhelpful or unhealthy. Eliminate anything unhelpful or unhealthy.

  807. This is another preliminary before you actually start on the

  808. reset process. Hebrews 12 one, we should remove anything from

  809. our lives that would get in the way and the

  810. sin that holds us back. Now, if you've ever gone

  811. on a diet, you know what I'm talking about here.

  812. Before you do anything else on a new diet, you

  813. go into your refrigerator and you take out all the

  814. junk food and throw it away. And you go into

  815. the kitchen cabinets and you throw away all the stuff

  816. that would be a temptation to you. You wanna eliminate

  817. the junk food so you can get on the straight

  818. and narrow way. We worry about junk food and what

  819. it does for us, but what about mental junk food?

  820. If you wanna change your life, maybe you need to

  821. unplug or cancel your cable subscription for a few months.

  822. If you wanna really change your mind, stop the junk

  823. that's coming in over the internet and the stuff of

  824. social media. I read an article yesterday that depression is

  825. at the highest level it's ever been in teenagers and

  826. young adults in their 20s. Highest it's ever been, why?

  827. Because they're the highest consumers of social media. and they're

  828. looking at everybody's so-called perfect life, and they're comparing themselves,

  829. and they're feeling left out, and they feel like I'm

  830. never gonna measure up, and they're always comparing, and they're depressed.

  831. Hebrews 12, one and two, the CEV version says this.

  832. We must get rid of everything that slows us down,

  833. or slows down our progress, because we wanna make progress

  834. in our lives, especially those sins that just won't let go.

  835. That's those habitual things that hold onto us. We'll talk

  836. about those. We must be determined to run the race

  837. that is ahead of us and we must keep our

  838. eyes on Jesus who leads us. So here's the question,

  839. write this. This fourth question, write this down. What do

  840. I need to get rid of or let go of?

  841. What do I need to get rid of or let

  842. go of? It might be a relationship that's pulling you down.

  843. A friend that's not really being a friend. They're dragging

  844. you in the wrong direction. If I stand up here

  845. and you're down there and I'm trying to lift you

  846. up and you're trying to pull me down, who's gonna win?

  847. There's no question. It's easier to pull somebody down. So

  848. while I'm trying to help them, pray for them, love them,

  849. invite them to church, but you should have as your

  850. closest friends those people who are actually making you a

  851. better woman, a better man, not taking you the wrong direction.

  852. So what do I need to let go of? Maybe

  853. there's some stuff, some reading material in my house. I

  854. need to get it out of the house. I need

  855. to clear out. Only you will know what cleaning out,

  856. what eliminating anything unhelpful and healthy will mean to you.

  857. Now one of the things in the days ahead we're

  858. gonna have to work on are attitudes. because there are

  859. some attitudes that need to be cleaned out of our lives,

  860. and there's some new ones that need to be replaced.

  861. We need to put on good attitudes and throw out

  862. bad attitudes. That's easier said than done, but we'll talk

  863. about how you do that. How do you replace an

  864. attitude that you've had for 20 years? How do you

  865. uproot it in your life? Colossians, the Bible says this,

  866. chapter three, verse seven to 10, you used to live

  867. It's talking about before you became a Christian. You used

  868. to live according to selfish desires. In other words, before

  869. I knew Christ, I just did what was best for me.

  870. Didn't matter if it hurt anybody else, I just did

  871. what was best for me. You used to live according

  872. to selfish desires when your life was dominated by them. Me, me, me, me, myself,

  873. and me, okay? But now, you must get rid of

  874. all these things. And he just gives a few examples

  875. of bad attitudes. Anger. hot temper, hating others who believe

  876. or vote differently than you, no insults, so that rules

  877. out a lot of the social media, no insults or

  878. filthy talk must ever come from your lips, and stop

  879. lying to each other, for you have put off your

  880. old self with its habits, and you have put on

  881. your new self. That's a reset, that's what we're gonna

  882. do in the weeks ahead. Since we're gonna do this,

  883. let me wrap this up. Since we're gonna do this

  884. series on resetting your life, different areas, and you always

  885. will need resets at different parts of your life, I

  886. went and looked up the word reset in scripture and

  887. found that it's only used one time in the Bible,

  888. the word reset. In the Hebrew language, the word reset

  889. in Hebrew is only used in the book of Isaiah.

  890. Now here's the background, because this means a lot. The

  891. nation of Israel had been beaten in war by the

  892. empire of Babylon. And when they won the war, they

  893. took the entire nation as prisoners of war back to Babylon,

  894. which is Iraq. So an entire nation was transported from

  895. living in Israel. They moved them all to Iraq where

  896. they were prisoners of war for 70 years. They're pretty discouraged.

  897. They're pretty displaced. They're like the Ukrainians in Poland right now,

  898. displaced because of a war. Only that was escaping. This

  899. was taking them hostage. And it said that they destroyed

  900. the capital of Jerusalem, the holy city. So God's people

  901. are pretty discouraged. And in the midst of all this,

  902. God did not want them to realize, did not want

  903. them to think that he'd forgotten them. He still loved them,

  904. and he was going to rebuild and reset their lives.

  905. And here's what he says in Isaiah 54. This is

  906. God talking. The mountains may shake and the hills may crumble.

  907. In other words, everything may be falling apart in your life,

  908. but my unfailing love for you will never be shaken.

  909. Everything else could be shaken in your life, but nothing

  910. could shake me in loving you. It's never gonna stop.

  911. And my promise of peace will never change, says the Lord,

  912. who has compassion on you. And then he turns to

  913. this city of Jerusalem as a symbol of hope for Israel.

  914. And he says this, oh Jerusalem, you suffering, storm ravaged

  915. city needing comfort. Maybe you feel like that. You feel

  916. like you're suffering, you've been ravaged by trials and storms,

  917. and you need comfort. He says, I will rebuild you

  918. with priceless jewels. and I will reset, there's the word,

  919. I will reset your foundation with sapphires. What's he talking about?

  920. It's a metaphor saying I'm gonna rebuild you, I've not

  921. forgotten you, I've never stopped loving you, We're gonna rebuild you,

  922. your life, and your city. But this time, we're not

  923. gonna build it on the shaky sand that can You

  924. can lose your foundation. I'm not gonna build your foundation

  925. of your life on clay. I'm not even gonna build

  926. your foundation on cement. I'm gonna build it on precious jewels, sapphires.

  927. In the next verse he says, and rubies for your walls.

  928. Sapphires and rubies. Why would God build a foundation on

  929. precious jewels? Because they are unchangeable. Everything else can rust

  930. or rot or decay, but sapphires and rubies don't decay

  931. and rot. They last, they're eternal. That's why they're so expensive. Sapphires,

  932. incredibly expensive. Rubies, incredibly expensive. The top of the line

  933. ruby can cost $ 1. 1 million a carat for a really

  934. good ruby. There was recently a ruby sold, 30 carat

  935. ruby for nearly $ 35 million. 35 karat ruby for $ 35 million.

  936. He says, I'm gonna build your foundation not on stone,

  937. but on the most precious things on earth. More precious

  938. than gold. Actually, even more precious than diamonds. Diamonds are

  939. much more available than either rubies or sapphires. He said,

  940. I'm gonna build your life on a precious foundation and

  941. it's going to last. So, what I recommend as we

  942. start this series on resetting your life, that you listen

  943. to what God told Job to do and you follow that.

  944. Look on the screen. Job chapter 11 says this. Job

    Job 11 chapter mention

  945. gone through a lot of hard time. He said, put

  946. your heart right, Job. Reach out to God and get

  947. rid of all the evil and wrong from your home.

  948. All that junk that's in your home, you need to

  949. clean it out, eliminate it. Then face the world again

  950. Firm and courageous. And he says, if you do that,

  951. here's the promise, then all your troubles will fade from

  952. your memory like floods that have passed and remembered no more.

  953. He said, you know all that hurt from your past?

  954. It would be like water under the bridge. It's just gone.

  955. How long do you remember water under the bridge? It's gone,

  956. you forget it. And he said, your life will be

  957. brighter than the sunshine at noon and you will live

  958. a secure, you'll live secure and full of hope. Now, guys, friends,

  959. as somebody who loves you, this is my prayer for you.

  960. That in this series, there will be a life reset

  961. where you go to a new level of living And

  962. all that junk in your past, it'll be like water

  963. under the bridge. It's gone, you don't have to deal

  964. with it anymore. It's forgiven, it's forgotten, it's over. And

  965. then your life starts shining bright as sunshine at noon.

  966. You live securely, you live full of hope. That's my

  967. prayer for you in this series. Now most of you

  968. are already believers. You've stepped across the line. You're in

  969. the family of God. But we still have to have

  970. resets at different point in our life. Some of you

  971. have not yet stepped across the line. And so the

  972. last verse is a verse for you. And the Bible

  973. says this, 2 Corinthians 5, 17. When someone becomes a Christian,

  974. you invite the Lord into your life, he becomes a

  975. brand new person inside He is not the same anymore.

  976. A new life has begun. That's what you call a

  977. real fresh start. That's called salvation. So whether I've already

  978. done the first step or I need to do the

  979. first step, all of us can take the next step

  980. in a reset of our lives. It's gonna be cool.

  981. Let's bow our heads. So as I pray, just follow

  982. me in this prayer. God, I want you to do

  983. something new in me starting this week. I'm asking you

  984. to do something new in me. You make everything new. God,

  985. make a fresh start in me. Shape a Genesis week

  986. from the chaos in my life. You told me to

  987. forget the former things and to focus on the new

  988. things you're gonna do in me. I wanna do that.

  989. And then say, Lord, help me to spend some time

  990. this week pinpointing specifically what I want changed in me.

  991. To look closely at myself, to test myself, and find

  992. out what you want to change in me. And then Lord,

  993. I'm asking you to help me to find some people

  994. who will support my reset. I know that standing alone,

  995. it's not gonna work, that I need group support. And

  996. I commit to getting in some kind of a group

  997. as we work on this life reset in my life.

  998. Help me to remember that when I get discouraged, when

  999. I feel defeated, when I feel like a failure, it's

1000. because I'm not in community at that moment. And Lord,

1001. during COVID, it was easy to give up the habit

1002. of meeting together. But I commit to being in church

1003. every week and being in a small group because I

1004. know that's where I'm gonna get the encouragement I need. Finally, Lord,

1005. help me to eliminate anything that's unhelpful or unhealthy in

1006. my life. And this week, help me to think through

1007. what I need to get rid of and what I

1008. need to let go of as you prepare me for

1009. the new me, the new improved me. I want you

1010. to do a reset in my life. You've never invited

1011. Jesus into your life. Say, Jesus Christ, come into my life.

1012. Make yourself real to me. I'm opening my heart to you.

1013. And as much as I know how, I'm asking you

1014. to come in and save me. And I humbly ask

1015. this in your name, amen.
