  3. Allen: There's a hurricane that's coming. Yeah. The last hurricane that came pretty much wiped out our church. Right? Yeah. Okay. Well, there's a couple after that, but they'll they weren't as bad. Yeah. Broadly speaking, wiped out the church. then we had a new building built. This is before my time. It's beautiful. We have a great building. We have great offices. Yeah, it's like a new building. Yeah, it's a new building. Okay. And we have a lot of things in the office, lots of books, lots of like the normal things you'd expect, printers, copiers, things like that. Yes. In the in the in the

  5. Allen: church building like you'd expect. That's right. but there's some random things as well. Yes. Yeah. And so your office is the big, you sit in the corner and you have a big office and there's lots of things in there and books and all that. But like what is the most random thing that's in your office? There's gotta be something weird. Like something with the wash up from the hurricane or I don't really have any most of the hurricane damage has been repaired in there. I'll tell you what's random and weird is when I came back from

  6. Jeramie: church building like you'd expect. That's right. but there's some random things as well. Yes. Yeah. 7. Allen: Some vacay, people took all those little have you ever seen those? They look like little erasers, but they're Jesus. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they're like an inch high. And someone put like like thirty of those all over my office. So everywhere I went, I kept finding these little Jesuses. So I don't know who it was. Someone on staff punked me. Yeah. But it's so random. Like, what's the deal with those? Why are those such a I mean, they're everywhere now? They're everywhere.

  8. Jeramie: Some vacay, people took all those little have you ever seen those? They look like little erasers, but they're Jesus. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they're like an inch high. And someone put like like thirty of those all over my office. So everywhere I went, I kept finding these little Jesuses. So I don't know who it was. Someone on staff punked me. Yeah. But it's so random. Like, what's the deal with those? Why are those such a I mean, they're everywhere now? They're everywhere.

  9. Allen: People put them places. I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. They're literally everywhere. So much so this is how I know they're everywhere. I went to go get an MRI, which by the way, I'm deathly afraid of MRIs, although I've overcome my fears most recently with the power of the Lord. Of course. But what that means is I'm in this MRI and the technician, she's like, Hey, like, do you want this little Jesus to hold on to? And it you know, it was that little Jesus. It's one of those little eraser Jesus. Or whatever they are. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Eraser Jesus. And I'm like

  10. Jeramie: People put them places.

  11. Allen: No, I was like, I got a big Jesus. Don't hand me my little one inch eraser Jesus because this one inch Jesus ain't gonna get me through this MRI. Yeah, I don't know. For some reason I just imagine like China mass produ like this atheist communist nation's like we don't believe in this, but they'll buy this. That's right, that's right. It's like if we get them to believe they have a one inch eraser Jesus, then w we'll just flatten all the Christians. I know, I know. I mean it's just it gets so close to idolatry. It's it's

  12. Jeramie: No, I was like, I got a big Jesus. It's it's

  13. Allen: It's Because you know, because people like attribute like once you have a little thing like that and you start attributing special meaning and significance to it, like you're I'm not sure how that's too much different than idolatry. I know. I agree. Like if I had accepted that, held that in my hand, and I came out and gave a testimony to this technician, look, this one inch baby Jesus got me through. Yeah. Look at one inch baby Jesus, then read Revelation one, nine to twenty, the real Jesus. That's right. And you'll see a gap.

  14. Jeramie: It's Because you know, because people like attribute like once you have a little thing like that and you start attributing special meaning and significance to it, like you're I'm not sure how that's too much different than idolatry. I know.

  15. Allen: Yeah, something about sword dipped in blood or something like that. That's later on. But glory, power. Yeah, yeah. Anyway, speaking of Jesus, we're gonna comment on Jesus. We're hopping back into the end of month nine. This is days twenty to twenty-five. And so we're gonna comment here. the end of Isaiah, which is fifty-one through sixty-six, and the beginning of that section, specifically fifty-one, fifty-two, fifty-three, we mentioned last time.

  16. Jeramie: Yeah, something about sword dipped in blood or something like that.

  17. Allen: Is this fourth servant song and it highlights the suffering servant? And it's just it's just magnificent. It's glorious. It's a go-to passage, you know, whenever you're like, man, who is our Jesus? Speaking of, who is our Jesus? wanna p comment on who is our Jesus as he's portrayed here as a suffering servant? Yes. Isaiah 53, if you're listening, is a chapter you need to know.

  18. Jeramie: Is this fourth servant song and it highlights the suffering servant? And it's just it's just magnificent. It's glorious. It's a go-to passage, you know, whenever you're like, man, who is our Jesus? Speaking of, who is our Jesus? wanna p comment on who is our Jesus as he's portrayed here as a suffering servant? Yes. Isaiah 53, if you're listening, is a chapter you need to know.

  19. Allen: As a Christian, you need to have that in your mental file, because it's it's one of the most clear, thorough, powerful prophecies about the suffering, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus and the salvation he brings to to all people. It's quoted in the New Testament.

  20. Jeramie: As a Christian, you need to have that in your mental file, because it's it's one of the most clear, thorough, powerful prophecies about the suffering, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus and the salvation he brings to to all people. It's quoted in the New Testament.

  21. Allen: As a reference for Christ. And I think what's also important about it is it explains not only it only prophesies that Jesus would die and and be buried, but it explains why. And that's the key. And it and it is that he is bearing our sin. You know, verse five He was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities. The punishment for our peace was on him.

  22. Jeramie: As a reference for Christ.

  23. Allen: the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. And so it makes it really clear that the death of Jesus for us is a a sin bearing death. Mm-hmm. where he bore the punishment of that for us. And so, you know, he's a guilt offering. And then at the end you have his resurrection, that after you know, after he's died, then

  24. Jeramie: the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. And so it makes it really clear that the death of Jesus for us is a a sin bearing death. Mm-hmm. where he bore the punishment of that for us. And so, you know, he's a guilt offering. And then at the end you have his resurrection, that after you know, after he's died, then

  25. Allen: He'll see the light of life. And, you know, by his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many and carry their iniquities. So the way we're justified are right before God is because Jesus carried our iniquities. So it it really chapter 53, you know, maybe you like didn't get through that section in your reading. It's a lot in Isaiah, but like it it really is worth just going through slowly with like pen and highlighter and just meditating on that on that section.

  26. Jeramie: he'll see the light of life. And, you know, by his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many and carry their iniquities. So the way we're justified are right before God is because Jesus carried our iniquities. So it it really chapter fifty three, you know, maybe you like didn't get through that section in your reading. It's a lot in Isaiah, but like it it really is worth just going through slowly with like pen and highlighter and just meditating on that on that section.

  27. Allen: Yeah, that's good. I think especially an encouragement, if you're feeling the weight and guilt of your sin. Yeah. And you're like, I need some comfort. Go here. And especially, I mean, verse seven is one in in A's some of my favorite. He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth, like a lamb that is led to the slaughter led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that it before its shears is silent. So he opened not his mouth, right? He is the lamb. He is he is the final.

  28. Jeramie: Yeah, that's good.

  29. Allen: Passover lamb who would bear our iniquities. And it was in verse 10, it was the will of the Lord to crush him. He has put him to grief when his soul makes an offering for guilt. He shall see his offspring, he shall prolong his days. So yeah, it's just this idea that he took on my sacrifice. He did not open his mouth, but he went to the cross. The New Testament tells us, for the joy set before him bears our iniquities.

  30. Jeramie: Passover lamb who would bear our iniquities.

  31. Allen: And we now have been made clean because Christ has resurrected. It's just such a beautiful passage. Yeah. It's a good text to read in tandem with Hebrews nine and ten, which we talked about in the last podcast, which is all about the the meaning of Christ's death and sacrifice. But the you know, the the thing about the end of Isaiah is like that's such a glorious chapter, but it just keeps being like epic and ultimate and wonderful, you know.

  32. Jeramie: And we now have been made clean because Christ has resurrected.

  33. Allen: you have just God's grace poured out then in in fifty four to the end of the book, you know, chapter fifty five, verse one come everyone who is thirsty, come to the water. And you without silver, come buy and eat, come buy wine and milk without silver without cost. why do you spend silver on what's not food and your wages on what does not satisfy? You know, he's it's like come to the to the free gift of salvation that only Christ gives. Yeah. you know.

  34. Jeramie: you have just God's grace poured out then in in fifty four to the end of the book, you know, chapter fifty five, verse one come everyone who is thirsty, come to the water. And you without silver, come buy and eat, come buy wine and milk without silver without cost. why do you spend silver on what's not food and your wages on what does not satisfy? You know, he's it's like come to the to the free gift of salvation that only Christ gives. Yeah. you know.

  35. Allen: The the prophecy of the the house of prayer, chapter fifty six, chapter fifty eight, true fasting, which is, you know, it's not about ultimately the religious observers, but it's observances, but it's about caring for those in need in the community. Yeah. another favorite few chapters later, Isaiah sixty one is the year of the Lord's favor. Yeah. And this is one of my favorite texts in the New Testament. I believe it it's Mark Four.

  36. Jeramie: The the prophecy of the the house of prayer, chapter fifty six, chapter fifty eight, true fasting, which is, you know, it's not about ultimately the religious observers, but it's observances, but it's about caring for those in need in the community. Yeah. another favorite few chapters later, Isaiah sixty one is the year of the Lord's favor. Yeah. And this is one of my favorite texts in the New Testament. I believe it it's Mark Four.

  37. Allen: When Jesus opens up the scroll and he starts reading it. Yeah, and it that. Yeah. Or sorry, Luke Four. Yep. and he says, This is the he's read this is the passage that he's reading, and he says, I'm him. The year of the Lord's favor is now here. So you read this, you're like, the spirit of the God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. And then Jesus comes and says, I've come, I'm him, and I'm bringing good news to the poor. It's such a triumphant, victorious promise. And that's the goal of the end of this is you know, God promised to redeem

  38. Jeramie: When Jesus opens up the scroll and he starts reading it. Yeah, and it that. Yeah. Or sorry, Luke Four. Yep. and he says, This is the he's read this is the passage that he's reading, and he says, I'm him. The year of the Lord's favor is now here. And that's the goal of the end of this is you know, God promised to redeem

  39. Allen: Israel, and this is the promise of restoration in a suffering servant in the Messiah who would then come. You know, of course, we'd prophesy about s you know, six hundred years later from you know, approximately from this time forth. But God is good on his promises and sent him in the the year of the Lord's favor is now upon us in this new age, under the new covenant in Christ, where his spirit is poured out upon us. Then at the end of Isaiah, you get prophecies about the new creation.

  40. Jeramie: Israel, and this is the promise of restoration in a suffering servant in the Messiah who would then come.

  41. Allen: New heavens and new earth, which gets picked up in Revelation twenty one. so so you know, Isaiah is brimming with it's just brimming with imagery and promises that that find their fulfillment in Christ, in the new covenant, like you were saying, the new age in Christ, and then ultimately in Christ's return. So the you know, it just it's a book that that reaches a kind of mountaintop height at the end, and it's it's very glorious.

  42. Jeramie: New heavens and new earth, which gets picked up in Revelation twenty one. so so you know, Isaiah is brimming with it's just brimming with imagery and promises that that find their fulfillment in Christ, in the new covenant, like you were saying, the new age in Christ, and then ultimately in Christ's return. So the you know, it just it's a book that that reaches a kind of mountaintop height at the end, and it's it's very glorious.

  43. Allen: Yeah. Yeah. It is glorious. we finished Proverbs. We finished Isaiah. We finished Proverbs. Yes. Which you know, just another great book full of full of wisdom. I you know, that's that's one you can just keep reading and rereading because there's so much packed into it. Yeah. I wish I had read when I was like a new Christian. Yeah. I wish I had heeded the advice to go read the Proverbs once a month. Or you know, because it's you know, thirty one days, one proverb.

  44. Jeramie: Yeah.

  45. Allen: 'Cause it's just like you want to learn how to follow Christ, live a godly life and get wisdom. It's the Proverbs. But Yeah, so practical. Yeah. So yeah, if you're hey, if you're discipling a new believer or something, you know, and they're they're understanding Christ, under under coming to understand the gospel, they're like, How do kinda live my life, get wisdom, get counsel? 'Cause it really happens when you come to know Christ, it's a complete mindset shift, right? You're like, I now live according to God's standard. The proverbs is so helpful for that. So that might be something that if you're discipling someone, sit down with somebody and say, Hey, will you read through a proverb and let's talk about it? But

  46. Jeramie: 'Cause it's just like you want to learn how to follow Christ, live a godly life and get wisdom. But

  47. Allen: And in our reading, yeah, I agree with all that. we we at the end very end of Proverbs chapter thirty-one, you have the words of King Lemuel, which ends with the the wife of noble character. And and really she you know, it ends with this because in some ways the book of Proverbs is framed as the advice of a a king to his son. That's right. To seek wisdom and to seek a wise wife.

  48. Jeramie: And in our reading, yeah, I agree with all that. we we at the end very end of Proverbs chapter thirty-one, you have the words of King Lemuel, which ends with the the wife of noble character. And and really she you know, it ends with this because in some ways the book of Proverbs is framed as the advice of a a king to his son. That's right. To seek wisdom and to seek a wise wife.

  49. Allen: And a godly wife who will embody wisdom. Yeah. So just as wisdom is portrayed as a woman and folly is portrayed as a woman, and folly's incarnation, if you want to put it that way, is the the wayward wife who's an adulteress. So the incarnation, if you want to put it that way, of the wise of whis wis lady wisdom is the Proverbs 31 wife. Yeah. So this is what it looks like in action, and she is.

  50. Jeramie: And a godly wife who will embody wisdom.

  51. Allen: Hardworking, she is industrious, she loves her family. She her family gains honor because of her. and you know, many women have done noble deeds, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised. So good. And so, you know, just a call for women and men, young women, young men, to be godly, be wise.

  52. Jeramie: Hardworking, she is industrious, she loves her family. She her family gains honor because of her. and you know, many women have done noble deeds, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised. So good. And so, you know, just a call for women and men, young women, young men, to be godly, be wise.

  53. Allen: You know, because youth it fades quickly. It does. You know, people like people always talk about this is something you'll experience too, I bet. But like as you get older, like your mental age versus your body age. So like, you know, like in my head, I'm I'm solidly in like my early forties or late thirties. Yeah, that's right. But like in my body, my body's like, No, you ain't and it reminds you that you're not

  54. Jeramie: You know, because youth it fades quickly.

  55. Allen: Yeah. Yeah, beauty fades, strength fades, your body fades, but godliness, you know, endures. And it's it's kind of cool to think that like like our bodies may be failing us, but godliness can get stronger. Yeah. Even as our body is aging. Yeah. And you know, the the the true, you know, new life in Christ can actually, you know, wax stronger the older you get, even when everything else seems to be not waxing stronger. So

  56. Jeramie: Yeah. So

  57. Allen: Yeah, that's an interesting thought. You know, we said like we can get stronger in godliness even though the body isn't. Yeah. And we're gonna we're gonna cover Ecclesiastes next episode, but it kinda kinda speaking on that to a little bit, right? It's the vanity, striving after the wind. It's like all of this is vanity, but godliness is not vanity. Yeah. Yeah. And that's what this Proverbs thirty one woman is. Yes. gospel of Luke, New Testament. We finished Luke. We did finish Luke. Another gospel down. This was a week of of finishes. Yeah. Yep.

  58. Jeramie: Yeah, that's an interesting thought. Yeah. Yep.

  59. Allen: we finished Luke, the third of the the four gospels. this is resurrection accounts of Jesus and a a couple of unique stories. You know, the the road to Emmaus is one of the unique stories where Jesus recounts and teaches them from all the scriptures about himself. So they're confused, they've heard all these mixed reports, and Jesus says

  60. Jeramie: we finished Luke, the third of the the four gospels. this is resurrection accounts of Jesus and a a couple of unique stories. You know, the the road to Emmaus is one of the unique stories where Jesus recounts and teaches them from all the scriptures about himself. So they're confused, they've heard all these mixed reports, and Jesus says

  61. Allen: you know, verse 27, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the scriptures. So he he basically started pointing out how the old testament predicted his death, burial, and resurrection. Wonder if he pointed out Isaiah 53. Yeah. Wonder if he quoted that. That's a good question. You know, like what did he? So and sometimes people wonder, like, I wish I would have been there. And so we don't know what he said on the road to Emmaus.

  62. Jeramie: you know, verse 27, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the scriptures.

  63. Allen: But we do know this. We know that he spent about forty days after his resurrection before his ascension at Pentecost. I suspect that a lot of what he was doing was doing this teaching about how the Old Testament fulfilled himself. So that when you look at the New Testament writers and the way they quote the Old Testament pointing to Jesus, they probably learned that from Jesus. You know, so like like you know, you'll find in the New Testament, New Testament writers will reference Isaiah fifty three. Yeah.

  64. Jeramie: But we do know this. 65. Allen: you know, it's possible that during this 40 day period, he's like just walking them through the scriptures. Yeah. interestingly, at the end of Isaiah 24, You mean Luke 24? Yeah, Luke 24, I'm still in Isaiah. he said, you know, he said, These are my words. So after the road to Amaeus, he's now hanging out with the disciples as a group. In verse 44, he says, These are my words I spoke to you while I still with you, that everything written about me in the law of the Moses.

  66. Jeramie: you know, it's possible that during this 40 day period, he's like just walking them through the scriptures. Yeah. interestingly, at the end of Isaiah 24, You mean Luke 24? 67. Allen: of Moses, the prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled. And that's another way of just saying the whole Old Testament. The whole testament. Yeah, that's the three part the classic Jewish three part division of the Old Testament. And then and then it says verse forty five, he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. So it seems that a a major component of Jesus's post-resurrection ministry, pre-ascension. So in that 40

  69. Allen: Day period was opening the minds of the disciples about the Old Testament. Yeah. To help. So he was so the the way they interpret the Old Testament is really Jesus' way of interpreting the Old Testament. The apostolic interpretation is Jesus' interpretation. Yeah. And then he said, This is what is written, the Messiah would rise from the dead in the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all nations. So you have all the Old Testament pointing to Christ, and then you have the New Testament, which tracks the

So you have all the Old Testament pointing to Christ, and then you have the New Testament, which tracks the

  71. Allen: The outward proclamation of the gospel as the fulfillment. So really in these verses, you kind of have the Old Testament and the New Testament fulfilled in Christ. Yeah. and it's all it's all right there in a condensed form. It's a pretty remarkable passage. Yeah. That's pretty cool. just to think about that, the kind of the mastery of God. And it I think it just one of the cool things I'll always talk think about is how the Bible's always telling one story and you just see the masterfold plan of God coming in. One of the most helpful things I'm just trying to think about like, well.

  73. Allen: implications for readers on that where they're like, Well, I don't understand the Old Testament that way. I don't understand the apostles. One of the it's an image, it's actually from Simeon Simeon Trust, where it's like you have kind of like two lines coming in, think of like a a greater than sign coming in. You have the cross right at the end of the sign and then like a less than sign on the other side. So it's like everything in the old testament is pointing towards Christ and the cross and then it's kind of interpreted through that lens.

  75. Allen: Back out into the New Testament. And that's what we have. It's like this climactic point in history when Christ now says, Hey, everything should be interpreted in light of who I am. And that's what the Old Testament's looking forward to. Now the New Testament is expanding upon that. And so if you're yeah, if you're reading the Bible, in a way, there is a sense in which you should always read the Old Testament with Jesus in mind. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. And and and it's like, well, you know, why or whatever? It's well, because that's how Jesus read it.

  76. Jeramie: Back out into the New Testament. And that's what we have. It's like this climactic point in history when Christ now says, Hey, everything should be interpreted in light of who I am. 77. Allen: Yeah. That's what Jesus taught his apostles to read it. Yep. That's right. So it's it it's something so here here's the here's the theology nerd language. You want to read the Old Testament Christocentrically. Yes. In other words, with Christ at the center. not not that not that you go crazy and and try to like find a pull out Christ in every single verse. Yeah. Or like, you know, like people kind of go nuts with symbolism sometimes in typology. Yeah. So you you don't want to like, you know, torture it. I mean it you know, the the old testament meant what it meant

  79. Allen: at the time and to the original readers. It has an original audience. But because like you said, God is writing one story. That's right. that means that that the things that are happening in the old testament are connected and ultimately bring us to Jesus. So like we're reading for we're studying First Samuel right now in our Sunday morning sermon series. And and you can just see the echoes pointing to Christ that you know, that maybe Hannah wasn't aware of at the time. But we look back and and see through the lens of Christ. Yeah. Yeah. Amen. We have a good

  81. Allen: Good God, masterful. Yeah. I mean, it's like the greatest story ever told. It's a great story ever told. You know, it starts in Genesis and the whole thing just it it hangs together. And I I think it's one of the compelling things about the Bible is you have all these different authors over all this period, and yet there is one storyline, one through line. That's right. And and it's really remarkable. Yeah. And it's funny why, like, you know, best I can't think of any off the top of my head, but like

  83. Allen: What are the stories that people love to watch, you know, movies, fiction, fantasy. It's one where there's a Messiah figure who comes to save the day and be the ruler of the people and redeem them and restore good. Like everyone just riffs on that, you know, whether they acknowledge Christ or not, because it's the best story that could ever be written. Yeah. So you know, it's it's like, I forget it's Lewis or Tolkien, but you they referring to the Bible as like the true myth. Mm. You know, myth in not myth in the sense of not true, but true, right? But myth in the sense of like,

But myth in the sense of like,

  85. Allen: That epic story that explains everything. Right. And and so in a sense the Bible, that story of the Bible is the true myth. It's the one that explains and all the other myths are kind of echoes. He you know, Lewis would argue echoes are kind of pointers or derivatives of that. Yeah. It's good. All right, Hebrews. Yeah, and we finished Hebrews. We did finish Hebrews eleven and through thirteen here. This is the quadfecta. Quadfecta. Finished four.

  86. Jeramie: That epic story that explains everything. Right. And and so in a sense the Bible, that story of the Bible is the true myth. Yeah, and we finished Hebrews. We did finish Hebrews eleven and through thirteen here. This is the quadfecta. Quadfecta. Finished four.

  87. Allen: Four bucks. That's pretty good. And Hebrews is another theological Mount Everest. It's just so great. Yeah. Yeah. We finished the Hall of Faith. We did finish the Hall of Faith. We said we would talk about it last episode. And so we're going to deliver on our promise and talk about the Hall of Faith. Okay. Why is it called the Hall of Faith? I mean, besides the fact that it says by faith, I don't know how many times, through his faith, by faith, so many times. Then it has all these examples of case studies. But what is the Hall of Faith and why are these people mentioned?

  88. Jeramie: Four bucks. That's pretty good. And Hebrews is another theological Mount Everest. It's just so great. Yeah. Yeah. We finished the Hall of Faith. We did finish the Hall of Faith. 89. Allen: It's it's the writer of Hebrews going back through the Old Testament to show us that that that those who follow God walk by faith. That it's by it's by trusting in his promises. Mm-hmm. And and it means that and we need faith because the things we're waiting for haven't been delivered yet. Mm-hmm. And so and so he wants to show that the Old Testament saints

  91. Allen: trusted God even though they didn't have what they were looking for yet as a way of encouraging us as Christians when we believe in all these things about Jesus and how great he is, but we still we still have to go through trials and suffering. And it's like, well, why isn't God fixing this? And why is this a problem? And it's like, it's by faith. Yeah. You know, they We walk by faith, not by sight. Yeah. You know, we're like Abraham looking for forward to a city.

  92. Jeramie: trusted God even though they didn't have what they were looking for yet as a way of encouraging us as Christians when we believe in all these things about Jesus and how great he is, but we still we still have to go through trials and suffering. You know, we're like Abraham looking for forward to a city.

  93. Allen: That has foundations and whose architect is God. It's it's not a city we build here, but it's a city that God is gonna bring then. Yeah. what what's what's some of the so you know, we have some of heroes that we would typically think about, you know, when we think about people of great faith in the old testament, we would think of Abraham, we would think of Moses, David, yeah, Noah, yeah, Joseph. But we also have some surprising figures on here.

  94. Jeramie: That has foundations and whose architect is God.

  95. Allen: and I think, you know, for example, Sarah, who we know didn't actually believe God at first and took things upon herself, but she's mentioned here. Yep. And then also, I believe we have th yeah, verse thirty one by faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient because she had given a friendly welcome to the spy. So we have this this non-Jew prostitute woman say, get commended for her faith.

  96. Jeramie: and I think, you know, for example, Sarah, who we know didn't actually believe God at first and took things upon herself, but she's mentioned here. Yep. So we have this this non-Jew prostitute woman say, get commended for her faith.

  97. Allen: In trusting in the God of Israel, and she's redeemed. I just think that speaks to the mercy and grace of God, where God will literally can redeem anyone and anyone can have this faith in God because of his saving mercy and grace and the redemptive power of God. I just think that's on full display with some of the people that we have mentioned here that we wouldn't expect. And then, of course, the the the surprise twist at the end, you know, so you're kind of hearing the story, you're like, wow, listen to all those people. you know.

  98. Jeramie: In trusting in the God of Israel, and she's redeemed. 99. Allen: Verse 39, it wraps up with all these were approved through their faith, but they did not receive what was promised. But then he says, Since God has provided something better for us, that they would not be made perfect without us, and then he comes to us. Yeah. Therefore, since we have such a loud, large crowd of witnesses surrounding us. So now it's the idea of we're in this stadium running the Christian race, and all those people he described are like in the stands cheering for us. he says, Let us lay aside every hindrance.

  100. Jeramie: Verse 39, it wraps up with all these were approved through their faith, but they did not receive what was promised. But then he says, Since God has provided something better for us, that they would not be made perfect without us, and then he comes to us. Yeah. So now it's the idea of we're in this stadium running the Christian race, and all those people he described are like in the stands cheering for us. he says, Let us lay aside every hindrance.

  101. Allen: And the sin that so easily ensnares us and let us run with endurance, the race marked out for us, keeping our eyes on Jesus. So, so he like, you know, he takes you down this all this old testament stuff, and you're like, wow, wow, wow, that's cool. How interesting. And then he's like, and now it's your turn. Yeah. Run the race of faith. Yeah. Hey guys, run the you're in the same race of faith as Abraham, Noah, David, Baba. Mm-hmm. so run. Yeah. It it's really cool. So that's so rich.

  102. Jeramie: And the sin that so easily ensnares us and let us run with endurance, the race marked out for us, keeping our eyes on Jesus.

  103. Allen: You're in the same race. You're in the same race. You're in the same race. Same faith. But in the way we have I don't know what I say stronger faith, but I would say a more full more complete faith because we see the author and perfecter of our faith. That's right. We see They were all looking forward. They were looking forward. But we you know, we live post Luke twenty-four. That's right. We look back and we see how Jesus fulfilled all of that.

  104. Jeramie: You're in the same race. You're in the same race. You're in the same race. Same faith. But in the way we have I don't know what I say stronger faith, but I would say a more full more complete faith because we see the author and perfecter of our faith. That's right. 105. Allen: Sometimes one of the questions people ask is, how how were the Old Testament saints saved? Yeah, that's a big question I I get all the time. Yeah. Because Jesus hadn't come yet. Yeah, that's right. So like how was David saved? How was Abraham? Like I'm pretty sure we'll see Abraham and David and Samuel in heaven. That's right. But Jesus hadn't come, you know, d were they saved a different way. Yeah. And sometimes people think, they were saved by just being good law keepers in the Old Testament. But

  106. Jeramie: Sometimes one of the questions people ask is, how how were the Old Testament saints saved? Yeah, that's a big question I I get all the time. Yeah. Because Jesus hadn't come yet. But Jesus hadn't come, you know, d were they saved a different way. Yeah. And sometimes people think, they were saved by just being good law keepers in the Old Testament. But

  107. Allen: That's not it. They were saved by faith in the promises of God. Yeah, that's right. it's not like the old testament had different way of being saved. We're saved by faith. It's just that they had they had the gospel promised. We have the gospel fulfilled. That's right. And that's it. I think I said this on a previous episode, but it but it's worth repeating that under the old covenant, they were saved on credit and now we're saved on debit. Yeah. Yeah. That's it. Yeah. Credit and debit. And and Jesus came to, you know, make good on the credit. Yeah.

  108. Jeramie: That's not it. They were saved by faith in the promises of God. Yeah, that's right. it's not like the old testament had different way of being saved. We're saved by faith. Credit and debit. And and Jesus came to, you know, make good on the credit. Yeah.

  109. Allen: So you get it on the credit and we have faith. Yeah, that's by faith. It's by faith. Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. that this passage, many probably, you know, know it. You know, you guys read it, but you might even have it understood where there's this sense in which the author of Hebrews is exhorting them to not grow weary. And he says that you know, he's he's quoting Proverbs three here. He says, My son, do not regard

  111. Allen: Lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him, for the Lord disciplines the one he loves and chastises every son whom he receives. It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons, for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? Now, this is something that that has perplexed me for years. Yeah. And as I think I've been walking with the Lord, I've started to come into a an understanding and picture of that. But you've been walking with the Lord over thirty years, you've been pastoring people, you've seen God's faithfulness.

  112. Jeramie: Lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him, for the Lord disciplines the one he loves and chastises every son whom he receives. 113. Allen: What does it mean in life practically to get disciplined by the Lord? And yeah. Yeah. well what it doesn't mean necessarily, and he's talking about suffering. Right. So hard times, you know, you you're like you're potentially facing surgery. you know, there is a big hurricane, things don't work out. There's a big tragedy, you get a bad diagnosis. I mean, all the varieties of suffering we go through.

  114. Jeramie: What does it mean in life practically to get disciplined by the Lord? And yeah. Yeah. well what it doesn't mean necessarily, and he's talking about suffering. Right. I mean, all the varieties of suffering we go through.

  115. Allen: And and of course one of the questions is what does it mean? Like why am I going through this? Yeah. That's what we ask. And so we and and one of the things is, well, God must be mad at me and He's punishing me. And and that's not the right answer if you're a Christian. That's right. If you're a Christian, though, it can be discipline. And now we hear discipline and we kind of think like, well, you know, you stole a cookie, you get a spank. Yeah, that's right. Or get your hand slapped or something, or get time out. Like you're you did something wrong, therefore some so it's not discipline in in

  117. Allen: in that kind of sense. Yeah. But discipline in the sense of training and and character formation, kind of like constructive discipline. Yeah. So that one of the great ways that God like w works in our lives is through suffering. I mean, yeah and I I think the longer you're a Christian, the more examples you have where you're like, yeah, I didn't like that, but you know what? My faith grew. Yeah. I mean even this last week, so we had we had the

  119. Allen: Associate pastor candidate Mark, yeah, who we have called and what a great guy and family. But their their family came over to our house and and while they're over at our house for dinner, yeah, their little daughter just like totally threw up. It's like we cleaned it up and whatever. And then and like sure enough, like two days later, like, dude, I was in bad shape. Yeah. Like it was like I got that that

  120. Jeramie: Associate pastor candidate Mark, yeah, who we have called and what a great guy and family. And then and like sure enough, like two days later, like, dude, I was in bad shape. Yeah. Like it was like I got that that

  121. Allen: Sickness hit hard and it went fast, but it hit hard. I was like rocked for about two days hard. And so you know, suddenly, like, you know, Mr. Tough Guy is like in bed whimpering. Yeah. And like the Lord is disciplined. And he was just reminding me of how I need to slow down and focus on him. And you know, hold hold like be like a little child and hold the hand of my savior. That's right.

  122. Jeramie: Sickness hit hard and it went fast, but it hit hard.

  123. Allen: And you know, I just need to be reminded of that. That I like like I could get taken out by a tiny little microscopic bug. Like God's like, Jeremy, like you like you're you're here because I'm your God, not because you're anything special. That's right. And like so that's good for my soul. Yeah. And so, you know, if you're going through suffering, yeah, it does help to be like God is disciplining me, he is teaching me.

  124. Jeramie: And you know, I just need to be reminded of that.

  125. Allen: He's refining my character. don't always know, you know, we want to know why, what's he teaching me? But it's like just submit. Yeah. Humble yourself. Yeah. Yeah. a cliche then a theological point. diamonds are formed under pressure. Okay. That's the cliche. Yeah. True. True. Yeah. True. theological point. What is God's goal and plan for your life that you look like the image of his son, Jesus Christ? Yes. And what gets that done? That's right. Suffer.

  127. Allen: Or if you want to put it another way, same I I agree with that a hundred percent, is this God's goal for your life is He wants you to be happy. But the way to be happy is to know Him and reflect His Son and be transformed into His image. That's good. So God's like like I'm trying to get you to the happy place. Yeah. Which is to be in fellowship with me and your whole life surrendered to me. And that's the sweetest happiness there is. Yeah. So Yeah.

  129. Allen: And maybe a final thought there is there's a there's a level of distaste that we get in our mouths when we feel suffering here. Yeah. And I think that's supposed to be there. You know, the C. S. Lewis quote that says, like, if I find in me nothing in this world that can satisfy me, it must be me it must mean that I was made for another world. Yeah. And so in a sense, it makes us long. It makes us it makes you long. You're like, I wanna I wanna go be with this in this new world. And it's funny.

  131. Allen: because we have a sense of like this feeling of the new world and knowing it's gonna be better. And we've never even seen it. Yeah, I know. Isn't that isn't that crazy? And you know who you know who really helps me in this and who I who I learn from in this is is like the our most elderly saints in the church who are like the most like icky painy phase of life more than anyone. And and they'll just like they'll just straight up tell you, they'll be like, I'm so ready to go see Jesus. Yeah. It's like

  132. Jeramie: because we have a sense of like this feeling of the new world and knowing it's gonna be better. And we've never even seen it. Yeah, I know. Isn't that isn't that crazy? 133. Allen: And I'm like, wow, like they have a heart's desire to see Jesus more than I do. Yeah. And I think the Lord's brought them there through through all these things. So like I yeah, I want to have that attitude. Like I hope I have that attitude, but then you there's a part of me that's like, but I actually wanna get to the beach one more time. A few more shells to bring to God. That's right. I got a few more trips. I got my bucket God, my bucket list isn't finished, you know. That's right. That's right. But but the old saints are like

  135. Allen: Like yeah, like I don't even know where my bucket is. Like I'm ready to go to heaven. And it's like I need to be more like that. That's right. That's right. In due time. In due time. But the Lord gets us there. He does. Through suffering. Yeah, that's good. That's good. Cool. Well, suffer well, saints. you know, endure suffering as discipline. That's right. Next episode we'll talk about it. But count it all joy, my brothers, when you say when you face sufferings of various kinds. Yes. Count it joy.
